ust as we thought there was some progress being made with the opening of Corvera Airport, the Management Company Aena, which operates the large majority of airports in Spain, had muddied the waters rather by lodging an appeal with TARC, the tribunal responsible for
overseeing government contracts, in which it objects to many of the conditions set out in the tender. Continued on Page 2

CORVERA AIRPORT SAGA Continued from Page 1 It states that they are discriminatory, far too generous to the potential bidders and that companies require a much lower level of management expertise and financial stability than has previously been the case. Following Aena’s objections the tender process has now been suspended. Aena have also clearly refused to guarantee that they will close San Javier airport, which they also currently manage. This recent move and the subsequent statement from Aena could now deter many of the potential bidders from entering the process to secure the airport management contract. There is also an ongoing legal battle to consider between the Murcia Government and Sacyr, the first company to win the management contract back in 2007, to consider, which is now about to enter the high court. Things had been looking to move ahead when, 3 weeks ago, the Murcia government took steps to boost the fortunes of the region’s tourist industry by putting the management contract of the International Corvera Airport out to tender. But despite the appeal the opening processes are still going on with those companies still wishing to pursue the tender have just another week to register their interest. By that date they will have to show their financial ability to sustain such an operation after
Monday 24th - Sunday 30th April, 2017 which companies will then have a further two months to file their detailed economic and management plans. So where are we now with this cripplingly expensive aviation saga. Is it finally about to take off or will the recent objections made by Aena muddy the waters even further?? Following their investment of 270 million euro, statements emanating from the Murcia Government, say that building work is largely completed. But in recent years the project has been dogged by controversy not least of which was the government’s decision toward the end of 2015 to cancel the management contract with Sacyr first awarded in 2007. At the time they said that the multinational infrastructures and services company had exceeded the time allowed in the contract document to put the airport into operation, an airport of course that they also largely built. Despite the failure of many other similar ventures in Spain, where Castellón and Ciudad Real, Huesca, Lérida, Salamanca, León, La Rioja, Burgos and Albacete all suffered either crippling losses or closure, the Corvera International Airport is the first regional airport to be put out to management tender. Murcia’s Department of Development and Infrastructure say that the new airport will welcome an additional 800,000 foreign tourists in the first four years which will increase the
total passenger traffic arriving by air in the region to 3.5 million a year. They also say that the additional number of people arriving in the area will create a further 20,000 jobs in the tourist industry and increase the regional GDP by 3.5% Also last week, a small step forward with the relaunch of the airport website. Although there is information for potential passengers and customers in English much of the content provided is for the benefit of potential management companies. The opening paragraph states “The Murcia International Airport was born to become the gateway to one of the Spanish tourist destinations with the highest growth potential. The Spanish Southeast opens a new window to the world through its Airport. A comfortable, practical and efficient airport, both for passengers and for the companies that operate in it.” But take a look yourself at: www.aeropuertointernacionalmurcia.com However, the proof will be in the pudding of course especially since San Javier Airport has shown yet another spectacular increase in its passenger traffic during the Winter season, and with AENA refusing to close San Javier Airport down and Pedro Rivera, Murcia’s Minister for Development and Infrastructure, still unwilling to speculate on when Corvera will see its first activity, it might still be a while yet before the public are convinced that it can actually operate as a going concern.
In Harmony with the Centro Ecumenico
M
any will remember the highly successful performance of Vivaldi's Gloria in May of last year, featuring In Harmony Chamber Choir and the Mediterranean Symphony Orchestra. This year's concert, to be held on Friday 5th May at the Centro Ecumenico - Cristo Resucitado at La Zenia, will be equally exciting. The choir and orchestral soloists will perform the John Rutter Requiem with a supporting programme of liturgical 'potboilers', such as the Cantique de Jean Racine, Jesu. Joy of Man's Desiring, Psalm 23 from TV's Vicar of Dibley, and many more. In Harmony, a choir of 35 selected singers, have
established themselves as the leading chamber choir on the Costas and, under the tutelage of conductor Nigel Hopkins, continue to attract large audiences wherever they perform. The Rutter Requiem has been hailed by many famous musicians as one of the most beautiful ever written and tops the list of most-performed Requiems in Europe year after year. Soprano Verity Hall will be the soloist in the Requiem, and will be joined by the ever popular Mary Beer for some beautiful duets in the programme. Tickets, priced at 12€ - with a large donation to church funds - are available from La Ponderosa Gift Shop on La Zenia island. Book soon ... these concerts can sell out quickly.

fter a successful visit from BBC news last year to speak to and listen to the Band, word has spread about our little Band of Ex-pats, last month saw the Band welcome ITV and the Tonight Programme to one of their concerts.
T
he Rescue centre now has 13 geese following the birth last of 9 goslings last month. Mona had to take 2 home as 1 wasn't accepted by the parents and 1 couldn't eat very well, but after 10 days love and care they were both returned to their parents, who are now taking good care. After a message from another centre, 3 lovely dogs came to the Finca, Lines, India and Savana. They had to leave their previous home because there were too many dogs, the alternative being their destruction. The 3 dogs arrived on the 24th of March. India was adopted by Kirsten and Wolfgang the very next day, Renate and her husband fell in love with Savana, providing her with a forever home after 10 days at the Finca leaving just poor Lines who remained on his own without his 2 girlfriends.......but great news, Lines has now found his forever home in Hamburg, Germany, and is leaving the Finca in 2 weeks’ time. All volunteers wish all three of you GOOD LUCK!
The volunteers would also like to wish Tracey Hawkins, who fostered Nelly, Nala, Dina and Snow, a speedy recovery after a nasty fall. After the Open Day last month the vet had to come down to the Finca where our horse Centella was very ill. It didn't look good at all, but after a couple of days of special care she was back to her normal self again, well done Centella! The next Open Day will be this coming Saturday 29 April from 1-6pm. There will be food, drinks, cakes, music and a raffle, with all the money going toward providing food for the animals as well as hay, water, vet bills, blacksmith, repairs and rent. The new water pump took all the funding that the centre had in reserve, so if you can help , please do. If you like to join the volunteers for a pleasant and relaxing afternoon with the animals please do come along on Saturday. You can bring carrots, apples, tomatoes, lettuce, dog and catfood or a make a small donation, as every euro counts! You can also become a food sponsor from 5.00/ 10.00 euros a month. The General Directorate of culture and heritage has therefore given the go-ahead for the transfer of the cross to ‘a more appropriate place’. He justified the move by saying that there are a number of technical points that have a negative impact on it remaining in its present location.

The Generalitat states that the cross would in future be better situated in the town cemetery.

Boost for life Making a positive expectancy on the coast difference to others
E
xpectations of longevity in the coastal towns of the Vega Baja and Marina Alta are the highest in the province with the climate and accessibility to socio-health services being the decisive factors. In a survey released by the statistics portal of the Catalonian Government the coastal areas are generally shown to have a higher life expectancy than towns in interior areas. Indeed longevity also increases the further south you travel, with men in the Vega Baja now expecting to reach the grand age of 85.71, outliving women just ever so slightly at 85.44. The contrast between coast and interior is exclusive to the Vega Baja as within the other two provinces in the Community the pattern is completely the opposite with the interior regions in the Camp de Túria and Alto Palancia in València and in Castellón both having higher expectations of
longevity that on the coast. It may also seem slightly confusing that the regions in the province with the lowest family incomes, the Vega Baja and the Marina Alta, both have the highest life expectancy for women and for men. However, as pointed out by the Professor of Human Geography at the University of Alicante (UA) Antonio Martínez Puche, the key is more "the mildness of the climate and the greater number of social health services available where, in the coastal areas, there is a "concentration" of resources of this type, both public and private.
Empathy Empathy is a word often used to define a trait that Samaritans’ Volunteer Listeners are required to demonstrate in their day to day work. Empathy is defined (Shorter Oxford English Dictionary) as ‘... the power of mentally identifying oneself with (and so fully comprehending) a person or object of contemplation.’ Empathy is contrasted with the word ‘sympathy’, defined (op. cit.) as ‘... a favourable attitude with feelings of pity and sorrow for the suffering or grief of another; an expression of compassion or condolence’. The ability to understand and feel what others are feeling by placing oneself in the other persons ‘shoes’, (as it were), is more intimate and immediate than feeling or expressing sympathy from a somewhat detached perspective. Compassion is a broader term than empathy encompassing a wider form of care and concern for others’ well-being. Compassion, care and empathy are said to be the cornerstone of health and social care in any society. Volunteers join Samaritans because they want to make a positive difference to the lives of others in need of help. Psychologists who examined the lives of care workers concluded that those most effective, developed in themselves traits of compassion, hope, optimism, self-efficacy, and resilience, along with a continued commitment to their profession. Whatever the Samaritans of Spain undertake to do in the public sphere are grounded on empathet-
ic listening and based on a solid moral and ethical foundation. By Migel Jayasinghe

MUSIC WINS ALL THE WAY T
he Orihuela Costa and District Branch of the Royal British Legion met last Thursday evening at the Olympia Restaurant in Mil Palmeras where members were entertained by the music of Graham Rhodes and Sandie Coates. Branch Welfare representative Sandie had previously arranged for Pedro Dominguez, the recently hired European residents’ coordinator for the Spanish Red Cross, to speak at the meeting, but illness had forced Pedro to call off earlier in the day. Without any form of after meeting activity, accordionist Sandie immediately convinced partner Graham that they should fill the breach, the result being a thoroughly enjoyable evening of music and song, with Graham accompanying on guitar. The Branch also enjoyed the company of it’s two senior members from the Royal Hospital Chelsea, Wayne Campbell and Skippy Teasdale, who had travelled to Spain to join with the Branch in their upcoming St George’s Day celebrations at the Emerald Isle in La Florida.

Tricked by the Insurance Company
The couple bought an apartment in the Costa Blanca about ten years ago, with the help of a mortgage from a Spanish bank. At the time of the purchase, the bank also insisted that they take out the bank’s property and contents insurance, which the couple did not think unreasonable at the time. Over the years, the couple paid their annual premium, but were irritated that the premium was always drawn from their bank account before they received their renewal notice.
Content in the knowledge that their home was now insured with a company that they could trust, Debbie and John went back to the UK for a few weeks. On their return, they were surprised to see a letter from the previous company confirming renewal of the old policy. John telephoned the company and after several attempts managed to speak to someone who told them that they couldn't cancel the policy, as they had not received a cancellation letter within the one month period prior to expiry; they were expected to pay the premium for another full year.
On two occasions over the years, the couple had to make small claims for damage to their home, and had become annoyed and disillusioned with the insurance company for their lack of courtesy and efficiency in dealing with their problems. Their many phone calls to the company were usually neither answered nor returned, which led

The final straw came in November 2016, when Debbie called the company to ask what their likely premiums would be from January 2017, since the premiums had increased substantially the previous year. The poor response from the company was enough to convince Debbie that they should change insurance companies at the end of the year. The couple decided to insure their property with the same company that insured their car; not only would they receive a substantial discount on premiums, but they trusted the company having had a claim several years earlier, which had been well handled. As a bonus, the company had English speaking staff and the insurance policies were provided both in English and Spanish.

Again, this issue seems to be a regular pattern with insurance and utility companies in Spain, and is a blatant attempt to prevent customers from switching to another company at the time of renewal.

the couple to wonder what would happen if they had a really serious problem that required their assistance.
John went to the bank and cancelled the direct debit to the insurance company. He also wrote a letter to the company, explaining that they were dissatisfied and would not be renewing their policy in January. In addition, he sent a copy of the letter by fax to the head office of the company, knowing how much Spanish companies still value the humble fax machine.
occasionally receive emails from expats who have fallen foul of insurance companies in their adopted countries. The problem is usually a lack of understanding of the cultural differences in terms and conditions, as well as language issues. Two readers, Debbie and John, raised an issue with me this week about property insurance.
ADVERTISING HOTLINE
Over the next few weeks, there was a heated exchange of letters and phone calls between the couple and the insurance company demanding the premium. Despite having sent both a letter and fax, John had no receipts to prove that these had been sent. The situation turned into one of blame with the company denying receipt of the letter of cancellation, whilst John and Debbie argued that they had complied fully with the company’s terms and conditions. Speaking to several banking and insurance contacts on Debbie and John’s behalf, it seems that their experience is not unusual and appears to be usual practice in Spain, with expats being particularly vulnerable to coercion. Once a policy is cancelled, many insurance companies will continue to demand unpaid premiums, make threats by telephone and letter as well as threatening court action for a period of time. In some cases, they take the premium from the bank without the customer’s permission. The advice is clear: Ensure that you give at least 30 days’ notice of cancellation to the insurance company, in Spanish. Send the letter ‘certificado’, ensuring that you retain the Correos receipt and track safe receipt of the letter, if possible. Send a copy of the letter by fax, and retain the ‘send and receipt’ slip provided by the machine. If the company denies receiving correct cancellation of the policy, send them copies of the receipts (again, send signed for), and ignore further communications from them. In most cases, the threats will cease after a few weeks, and in only rare cases is it worth the insurance company’s trouble and expense in taking legal action against the policyholder. If the insurance company takes the money from a bank account without permission, insist upon a refund of the premium from the bank within 45 days of the transaction taking place.
Sadly, the ombudsman and complaints systems for banking and insurance are not as well advanced as in the UK, which is also a problem for those expats who have little understanding of the language. The insurance companies know this and many are only too willing to take advantage to boost profits. Expat property owners with mortgages from Spanish banks should be aware that they are not obliged to accept a policy suggested by the bank, who also provides the mortgage. Customers are at liberty to shop around and find the best deal with a company with a proven track record of good claims support and customer service. The bank may insist upon a copy of the new policy, together with an entry in the policy document confirming that the bank has an interest in the property, together with the mortgage account number, which is a reasonable request. Despite this issue, there are some good insurance companies in Spain, who provide a high-level of customer service and support when it is most needed. Some companies also offer excellent support in English too, which is helpful at times of crisis. It is a question of shopping around, but not only for price. It is also important to speak to other expats who have had experience of claiming from a company; after all it is help when you need it urgently that is most important. I intend to include a list of insurance companies that readers have found helpful on the Expat Survival website, as well as those that have failed to meet expectations. If you have had a particularly good or poor experience of an insurance company in Spain, please let me know. he Valencian Generalitat Director General of Tourism, Raquel Huete, visited the submarine Delfín, moored in Torrevieja marina, in order to assess the possibility of including the vessel in a Torrevieja tourist route for people with disabilities. She was accompanied by the Torrevieja Councillor for Tourism, Fanny Serrano. Serrano explained that " we are working closely with COCEMFE (the Spanish Confederation of Persons with Physical and Organic Disabilities) to establish an tourist route which will deal with elements that are closely related to Torrevieja’ s coastal roots such as
the floating museums, salinas, the Museum of the Sea And Salt, Eras de la Sal and a number of other elements that are also connected. She said that Raquel Huete "has gone away with a very good impression of the state of conservation of the submarine and has agreed that it could be a very good option for people with reduced mobility who should have the opportunity to visit a submersible like this, the only permanent such vessel in Spain". The councillor added that she will be meeting with Technical Engineers to assess the modifications that would be necessary to make the submarine accessible.

EURONICS THURSDAY DART LEAGUE “THE ELECTRICAL SHOP” - BLUE LAGOON Euronics Darts Results Thursday 20 April TEAM KO CUP Semi Finals: Junction Jackals v Masseys 7-4 Phil’s playing golf, again, I think the result sheet is still in his car! El Capitan v Hen’s Teeth Coqs 7-5 No results sheet sent in The Finals of the TEAM KO Cup will be Junction Jackals V El Capitan to be held at The Tavern on Thursday 4th May. Committee members Simone and Debbie will be officiating. Auxiliary TEAM KO CUP Semi-Finals (1st Round losers cup) Porters v Porter House Bees 6-7 What a close game it was at the Porter House. Jeff Ward’s trio took the first trebles but the Bees Tim Goodacre, Gilly Kirby and John Lane’s bull finish evened it up. So the Porters tried again with Jeff, Tufty and Ray Hayes who checked out on D2. But the bees kept a’comin’ and Michelle Lane and Graham Parker’s (D9) took the first doubles. The Porters took the next two: Hayes (S20-D20) and Tufty (D10) to see them 4-2 at half time. Fortified no doubt by those signature little sausages, the Bees came back in the singles with dastardly drones Goodacre (S14-D20) and Parker (D2) to level it up again. Porter Tufty then hit D8 but Dad and son Lane (D15 and D16) put the Bees in the lead at the 11th Leg. Porter Todd temporarily saved the day bringing it to 6 -6 which then required the 13th golden leg decider of 6 player teams chipping away at 1001. Well it was Graham Parker of the Bees- this year’s men’s singles champion- who stole the 7th leg and sees the Bees through to the finals of the Auxiliary Team KO cup on 4th May. And who said that bees are dying out…although Harvey may now be a ‘zom’bee! Las Rosas v Ale House 4-7 Photo of results sheet sent in but too blurry to read, sorry. The finals of the Auxiliary TEAM KO cup between Porter House Bees and Ale House will be held at The Hen’s Teeth on Thursday 4th May, Chairman Alan Nash will be officiating.

League Match Game: Tavern Oldies v Junction Jaguars 5-7 The Tavern Oldies and the Jaguars played their last league game of the season a week early as a lot of the jags are away next week. T’was a great night and an important match for the two teams who were both vying to finish as runners up of Division B (Evolution were too far ahead to catch). It was a close game with some cracking scores from both teams – MOTM Graham Solomon (140), MOTM Sharon Marshall (140) but in the end it was the Jaguars that fought just that little bit harder and, probably against the odds, got the win. The rest of the league will play their final games next Thursday but this will not affect the 2nd place position. Well done to the Jaguars, an all-ladies team that can give the men a run for their money! A special thanks too to Captain Patty Poo Schofield who led her team to victory despite some fractious times over the season, you can rest now Poo, your work here is done! Final League game next week: Runners Up of Division A still to be decided. Will it be last year’s winners El Capitan or Team KO cup finalists and current 2nd place holders, the Jackals?! Watch this space… Presentation Night: Thursday 11th May The presentation night will be held at Las Ramblas Golf Club on Thursday 11th May, 7pm for 7:30pm. There will be a Spanish style hot buffet followed by presentations and then entertainment until 1am There will be a raffle and we will also try and rig up two darts boards on stands for the Blind Team KO competition, but can’t promise. Looks like we will have around 150 at the party this year, WooHoo!

La Marina Bowls
With Barry Latham
Sorry I forgot to do this report last week. My apology especially as it was such a good win. Now into the summer leagues and La Marina Pilots play in the South Alicante Hurricane Division and last week we were at home to Monte Mar Torro. We had a 12pts to 2pts win which is certainly a great start so well done to everyone even the trip that lost as they only did by one. Margaret Finlayson, Rob Finlayson and Martin Butler 19-9. Len Daniels, Tom Spencer and Gina Hindle 19-11. Terry Perchard, Jean Perchard and Janet Parsons 13-11. Dave Taylor Steve Hindle and Mo Taylor 18-9. Last but not least were Colin Armitage, Jim Freeman and Lynne Armitage 23-8. I bet they knew the rink!! This week is the Champions of Champions and we have representations in most of the disciplines. I managed to see every game bar one to support our players and saw some good games and some brilliant shots. Bill Jones and Len Daniels made it to the Quarter Final of the Men’s Pairs before losing on the last end by one. Peter Parsons went one better and reached the Semi Final of the Men’s Singles and played Russell Marks. Some game but alas it went to Russell who played some wonderful bowls. Thanks to all who represented our Club.

Carp R Us The club had to move the weeks match, round nine of the Spring Series, from Murcia town centre to the Embalse de Pedrera due to the poor state of the access and pegs in Murcia. Despite the very windy conditions, gusts were up to 40 mph, weights were fairly good and almost everyone caught. First was Alan Smith with 15.10 kg caught on feeder and corn, his first victory in a club match. Second was Roy Buttress with 6.72 kg, third was Jackie Breslin with 3.56 kg fishing his first match of the year and fourth was Graham Leadley with 2.70kg, all fishing feeder and corn. San Luis Bowls Club - Avalon Mixed Triples Each game was played over 10 ends or 90 minutes. Following the group stage, the semi finals were winners of group A: Carole Donnellan, John Pooley & Dennis Birkett (EI) who lost against group B winners: June & Keith Jones & Mal Hughes (SL). Group C winners: Bob Nesbitt, Carl & Ann Eagle (SM) beat group D winners: Carol Broomfield, Jason Prokopowycz, Derek Sale (Q). After this good mix of clubs, Mal’s team played through strongly to win against Jason’s team. A very enjoyable event all round; thanks to Sue Cooper for organising everything, players for their participation in a good spirit, the spectators who helped build the atmosphere and Avalon for their support. Champion of Champions Tournament started on Monday 17th at San Luis & Greenlands, with some excellent bowling to watch and some close fought matches; unfortunately both our men’s & ladies’ pairs had been knocked out of the competition by Tuesday afternoon, by Mazarron & Javea Green respectively. However by then Russell had reached the semi final of the men’s singles & today, after a beautiful display of bowling, he won through to the final on Saturday afternoon. With Sabrina & Keith Jones they won their first mixed triples match but then went out to El Cid. On Wednesday it was the start of the mixed pairs campaign which went very well for Tom Hill & Sabrina Marks and they are now through to the final on Saturday afternoon. Our rinks team of Steve Simmons, Sabrina Marks, Keith Jones & Rusell Marks are into the semi final on Saturday morning. Good luck to everyone; hopefully there will be good news to report next week. Obviously San Luis players have achieved some excellent results and we wish to continue this. We are currently looking for new members to join us for the 2017/18 winter season. We welcome all bowlers, from the most experienced to those who want to step up from purely “social” bowling to the league challenge. We are a very competitive but friendly club and Casa Ventura itself is a hub for the local area, offering a wide range of non-bowling activities. For more information please check: www.sanluisbowls.byethost7.com or contact June Jones, Club Captain: 691903773.

Torregolf raise 300 euros for Seve Ballesteros Foundation BY ANDREW ATKINSON The Leader EXCLUSIVE Font Del Llop Golf Resort at Monforte Del Cid, Valencia, staged the V Challenge Seve Ballesteros Foundation event on Saturday April 15, played under the Greensome stroke play modality. Played under licence, issued by The Royal Spanish Golf Federation, players had the opportunity to qualify for the National Final at Pedrena Royal Golf Club and an invitation to play the Pro-Am Eurasia in Malaysia in 2018. Seve, former World No. 1, won more than 90 international tournaments during an illustrious career, including five major championships during 1979-88. Winner of The Open three times and The Masters twice, a captain of The Ryder Cup Team, Seve won the World Match Play Championship a record-tying five times. Regarded as Spain’s and Continental Europe’s best golfer of all time, Seve won a record 50 European Tour titles. In 2008 Seve was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour, and died of brain cancer on May 7, 2011, aged 54. Seve Ballesteros was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for the second time at the BBC Sports Personality Awards 2009. Following Seve’s death the Seve Ballesteros Foundation was set up in partnership with Cancer Research with money raised dedicated to brain cancer research. “When Seve died with brain cancer his fam-
Torregolf donated 300 euros to the V Challenge Seve Ballesteros Foundation played at Font Del Llop golf resort. ily set up the Seve Ballesteros Foundation to raise money and golf courses throughout Spain have a Foundation Day,” David Winder from Torregolf, Exclusively told The Leader. “This year they staged the V Challenge Seve Ballesteros Foundation at Font del Llop, near Elche,” said David. “Torregolf have been collecting a €1 charity fee from every member when they play. And Torregolf are delighted to donate €300 to the Seve Ballesteros Foundation,” said David. David from Rojales, added: “A big thank
you goes to all members of Torregolf who contributed to this great cause. “May the Foundation continue to do the great work they do on behalf of Seve in their research against brain cancer. It is a worthy cause for a great golfer in Seve - who lives on in the form of his Foundation.” A spokesperson from Font del Llop said: “Thanks go to David Winder and Torregolf with the donation of 300 €, and to Maria Sanchez Garcia for donating 230 €, in the bid for the putt of Scotty Cameron.”
Honours even as Cannock RFC and Elche share the spoils The Cannock Rugby Club tour of Elche ended with honours even on Saturday when the games between the Lionesses, the Veterans and Elche Club Rugby Football ended with a win apiece. On a balmy day at the Estadio Jose Antonio Amorós Palao in the city centre the Lionesses were first in action in a late am start. However, despite a positive start, activities from the previous evening gradually caught up with the visitors and even though they ran in 3 tries of their own they couldn’t contain the speedy Elche winners, eventually going down by 29-15. In the Vets game the visitors also suffered, but more from the referee’s interpretation of the laws than Fridays’s festivities. But it was the Cannock experience in the end that proved too much for their hosts winning by the healthy margin of 15-5. But rather than the match results it was the sport and the camaraderie that won the day with Elche laying on a magnificent paella during the remainder of the afternoon. For many of the touring party it was their first taste of Spain but one that they certainly won’t forget. One tourist told me that the hospitality was second to none and the club are already making arrangements to return with a stronger squad in two years’ time following an invitation to help celebrate Elche Rugby Club’s 25 year anniversary.
The Easter tennis tournament took place last Saturday, at the Campoamor golf club. This time the tournament was for better standard players. The weather was perfect for tennis with no wind and pleasant temperatures. After 5 rounds of doubles matches of 8 games, with players swapping partners and opponents, the top scores were. MEN WOMEN 1st Steve Durie 28 pts 1st Jan McLaughlin 28 pts 2nd= Rafa deLeo 24 pts 2nd Geraldine Petit 21 pts 2nd= Dennis Kehoe 24 pts Everybody enjoyed the good standard of competition, played. Congratulations to the winners- club coach Steve Durie and regular winner Jan McLaughlin. More tournaments are planned throughout the year, If anybody is interested in joining in the tennis activities at venues on the Costa Blanca, or if you are interested in weekly club tennis sessions and adult training groups, or indeed, individual or shared tennis sessions. MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF (Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Svcs). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. ‘Autogenics’ In previous articles I have discussed relaxation techniques and these include the old faithful, have a good deep breath and exhale slowly. Just how does doing this help you in times of stress? The act of taking deep long breaths from the stomach causes a physical change in your body because the heart rate drops. In addition the breathing process depresses the subconscious control. This act is used in many sports just prior or during a given action to aid concentration before focusing on a target. In effect the breathing process aids visualisation while giving the sense of cleansing or detoxifying the body making it pure and ready for action. A number of years ago in Bulgaria a controlled breathing technique called ‘autogenics’ was developed as a mind calming process. Essentially the technique involves a four-count process for counting your breathing in a one second per count. Confused yet? Basically the inhale stage involves you taking in equal amounts of air, each of four counts with the last breath fully filling the lungs. The exhale stage involves you holding your breath for the four counts (approx 4 seconds) then releasing the air for fours counts and again the last exhale empties the lungs completely. Does the process work? This technique has been proven to work on all major golf tours BUT appears least effective if the player’s energy levels are totally out of control. Therefore you should use this technique as you walk to the tee or the green not wait until you are over the tee shot or a critical putt. The best time to use the autogenics technique is just prior to visualisation of the shot to be undertaken. This technique can also be used in conjunction with proper tension control. If you are to use your muscles effectively using proper energy levels is vital. For example when putting you should grip the as firmly as possible in the address position for a few seconds and then lighten the pressure to that that you require. This helps to reduce the tension directly in the muscles of action and should be incorporated with the deep breathing process. Torry live to fight another day CF Recambios Colon ... 3 CD Torrevieja ................ 0
Torry manager Pedreno made 4 changes to the side which lost at home the previous week, in this hugely important div 3 relegation encounter last Saturday at Sedavi Stadium. Back came free from suspension pair Vicente and captain Javi Meca, keeper Buba and striker Beltran, all knowing full well that points just had to be gained. But alas it didn't work out that way!!! As hard as they tried, they were always second best, against an outfit that also weren't entirely out of the mire. But some help was on its way 24 hours later, when results from fellow relegation threatened teams went their way.
Bunol, the team to be caught, didn't extend their 3 points advantage, going down 2-1 at Borriol, Muro are now only 2 points adrift following their 2 all draw at Paterna, whilst Almoradi now looked to be doomed after a 4 nil home thrashing by Castellon. So although it´s status quo, there´s now only 3 games left to play but 2 or maybe 3 victories must somehow be ground out, if relegation to the preferente div is to be avoided. The game itself was not a classic, with Torry having it all to do after conceding 2 early goals. Rafa Rivera gave Buba no chance from the penalty spot on 20 min, then 7 mins later, Adalfo added his name to the score sheet. When Sergio Cuesta headed home Adalfo´s left wing cross on 50 mins, the game was as good as over, leaving Pedreno to once again ponder on ways to discover a magic winning formula. Javi Meca, Vicente and Duran picked up unwanted bookings, whilst the club physio was dismissed from the bench for comments made to ref Canovas following his controversial penalty award. Torry line up: Buba, Vicente, Kana (Luis Carlos 55), Javi Meca, Jorge, Martin, Molina (Joel 74), Duran, Borja (Damian 55), Lewis, Beltran On Sunday 30 April, ko 6pm, Torry host local rivals mid table Crevillente at Nelson Mandela Stadium, in another must win fixture.
Lewis still feels that Torry can avoid the drop
