British Media join funding battle for Spanish Bowls

A storm erupted around Spain Bowling last week with the publication of an article in the Times Newspaper about the lack of funding for the National Bowls Team. When the newspaper contacted the Federacion de Bolos in Madrid to enquire about financial support for their representative team, which is made up entirely of British expatriates who are resident in Spain, a spokesman for the Spanish sports ministry said: “Lawn bowls does not receive any public money because there are not many players in Spain and those that do play are not Spanish citizens.”

But what he failed to say is that each of those players, and over 3000 more who are playing at bowls clubs across the country, contribute to the Federacion every year with an annual subscription. The article, written by Madrid correspondent Graham Keeley, appeared in the Times on Tuesday. It was quickly picked up by the BBC, the result of which was the appearance of Bob Donnelly, the National Director and Lawn Bowls delegado to the Federacion de Bolos, on Radio 5 ‘Live Daily’ with Adrian Chiles. On Wednesday afternoon Bob also appeared live on the ‘Hawksbee and Jacobs’ sports programme on talkSPORT Continued on Page 2

Bob, who has lived on the Costa Blanca for 28 years told both programmes that when the Spanish National Sports Council cut off the team’s funding three years ago it was said that they would not get a euro more “because they were not Spanish”. He said: “We are not Spanish nationals but we proudly represent the country. We would like to be able to go to the world championships in New Zealand in November but we cannot afford it. As EU citizens I don’t see why we don’t qualify for funding.” He cited recent examples of costs that National Team players have to meet in order to represent Spain at International Tournaments overseas. At the European championships in Israel in which they finished ninth, the Spain competitors were each required to find €1,200 for the week, a sum that would have been much higher if the hosts, Israel, had not paid their hotel bills. They even had to stump up the cost of their own track suit and team strip.

Bowls will be further discussed, “so the media interest that the sport has enjoyed in recent days can only help our cause.” “What the Federacion is also failing to acknowledge with their lack of financial support is the success that the team and it’s squad members regularly bring to the country, examples of which in recent years include a gold medal and a third place finish in the Europeans just a couple of years ago. This year the Spanish Lawn Bowls Internationals are committed to attending the Holland Open, the Chinese Tiger Open and, most importantly, 10 players are to go to New Zealand to the World Championships for which Spain qualified in the 8 individual disciplines last year. “As one of the respected countries in World Bowls it is essential that we attend all of these events if we are to maintain our Rankings and status,” he said.

But Bob confirmed that the battle for funding will go on and as a member of the National Federacion de Bolos it is a subject that he raised at the two Board Meetings that took place just a couple of days ago in Madrid.

The lack of funding inevitably means that Spain cannot always send it’s strongest teams as many players simply can't afford the cost. It also means that some very good players are being deprived of the opportunity to represent Spain which, with affordability as one of the criteria for selection, goes against the whole principle of Sport.

Bob told The Leader that he will also be attending a two day conference in Glasgow at the end of April where the development of European

Bob has accepted that it is probably too late to get extra funding in the short term, but he is hopeful that one or more local companies might come

along and help the National cause with support and sponsorship. “We are not looking for thousands” he said “but assistance with the National Championships which gets underway locally in May, or help with general expenses for the National Squad as the team fights to get its funding reinstated by the Spanish sporting authorities, would be more than satisfactory at this time.” Of course you don’t have to be a historian to recall the enmity between England and Spain when it comes to Lawn Bowls, as Sir Francis Drake insisted on finishing his game of bowls at Plymouth Hoe before climbing aboard HMS Revenge and chasing away the Spanish Armada. It would seem that some 400 years later the sport is once again the subject of a conflict between Spain and England although as the Times Newspaper reported last Tuesday “it is not anticipated that the result on this occasion will be a full-scale naval battle.” Any enquiries regarding sponsorship of the sport here in Spain can be made through the Leader which will pass them on to Bob Donnelly. Demolition ordered of illegal Pilar home Despite the Ayuntamiento refusing to act the Supreme Court has ordered the demolition of an illegal home in la Cañada de Práez, fifteen years after local neighbours made their first complaint. In a judgement made in Valencia last Thursday the Court (TSJCV) said that the complaints are fully justified and that the 130 sq mtr property in the Pilar de la Horadada hamlet was unlicensed and should not have been built on rural land.

It would seem that the demolition order, which the Pilar council was instructed to carry out, was issued four years after the bungalow was first built in 2001, after a local resident complained to the authorities about its structure. The complainant took the matter to the Pilar de la Horadada Planning Committee but a lack of action saw the record expire after six months. He then alerted SEPRONA, the branch of the Guardia Civil who are responsible for the protection of the local environment. Following a visit by Guardia officers the file was passed to the Pilar who then made a record of the violation prior to issuing a demolition order in September 2005. Since that time the matter has been fought through local, regional and now provincial courts with the final outcome being decided on Thursday.

Rio Segura receives European Environmental Award

The environmental recovery of the Río Segura river has been recognised in Europe, having received an environmental award the European Riverprize 2016 in a ceremony in Vienna. The international judging panel have recognised the restoration project which has been based on the “integrated management of all resources and water demands of the Segura basin”, beating another Spanish finalist, the Aragón en Navarra river, and the River Trent in England. The Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura, an operative agency which works on behalf of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment, received the award, although it is a combined multidisciplinary effort by several administrations, from the regional government of Murcia and the national Governments, and the various municipalities in which the river flows. The river starts its journey in the Jaén town of Santiago Pontones, passing through Calasparra, Cieza, Murcia, Beniaján, Orihuela and Rojales, ending in the Mediterranean Sea near Guardamar del Segura which bears its name. The restoration and recovery project is a compre-

hensive program which deals with the treatment and reuse of water, which allows the river water to be reused for agricultural, thus saving a precious resource which can often be scarce in this particular area of the country. For a period spanning over a decade, the project has managed to convert a flow of water that was both hazardous and odorous at the end of the last century, into a clean flowing river which has not only improved the water itself, but also the ecosystems which live off the system, and the subsequent flora and fauna which has been nurtured through the restoration of the meandering pathway. One noticeable improvement has been the return of otters and eels to the river, both at severe risk of being eradicated on account of the pollution in the river. The project will now be used as a benchmark for other European areas keen to improve their water quality, which will then hopefully lead to environmental improvements that benefit not only the agricultural sector, but the local population and the environment which is in severe risk through neglect, but in which we all must live.

WORLD CHAMPION QUARTETS TO APPEAR ON COSTA BLANCA

“LoveNotes” from the USA and “Musical Island Boys” from New Zealand, both world champion quartets, are being flown in for A CAPPELLA MAGIC, a concert being held

at on March 31st at Casa de Cultura, Calpe. A CAPPELLA MAGIC is being organised by the Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers who are visiting Calpe for their

Annual Convention March 31st to April 3rd. Almost six hundred singers and fans of Barbershop will be in Calpe including visitors from Russia, Sweden, Holland, Ireland, the UK – and of course, the best in the world from the USA and New Zealand. Current President of SABS, Lyn Baines, commented “Barbershop in 2016 is very different to what it was when it started to grow away from its African-American roots between the 1st and 2nd World War, when only men took part. Today, the barbershop style of singing is enjoyed by male and female quartets and choruses throughout the world.” Lyn added “In the 1950/60’s singers like Andy Williams, Dick Van Dyke and even the Osmonds made the style popular. Today’s champions sing traditional and very modern songs.” Marcia’s Dance Centre and Stage School will also be performing at the event. Everyone who enjoys a musical evening with some comedy thrown in, are welcome at Casa de Cultura, Calpe on March 31st. For tickets call 693 017 617 or you can email: tickets@sabs.es.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney By Barrie Mahoney

Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

The European Expat Cards on the table, I am pro European, and have always been committed to the European project, and would vote to remain in the EU with or without a deal. Frankly, I have found the UK Prime Minister’s recent tour of Europe to squeeze a better deal for the UK to be embarrassing, petulant, tinkering, and one that is hard to explain intelligently to European friends and neighbours. The European club is far from perfect, but reform by working together within the club of nations is far more effective than stomping off the pitch and shouting insults at the remaining players. The EU debate is now one of those areas of life where the passions and debate from both sides of the argument are coming to the fore, and sadly, already creating some unpleasantness. I will not rehearse the already familiar arguments from both sides relating to security, immigration and the economy, since there are many more people who have much greater knowledge and experience of such matters, but will restrict my comments to several issues that would be likely to have an impact upon expats living in Spain. Currently, expats enjoy the freedom of being able to live and work in any country of their choosing within the EU. Today, I live in the Canary Islands, but tomorrow I could pack my bags and choose to live and work in the Netherlands, Italy, or any of the 28 member states of the EU. Spanish and European law gives foreign residents permanent right to reside once they have been legally resident for five years. Currently, all European expats have this right regardless of the whim of any individual government who, for political reasons, may decide to change the rules. I contrast this to the time before the EU treaty, when work permits had to be applied for and regularly renewed; residency, together with the right to purchase a home in some pre EU countries was severely restricted or near impossible to achieve.

Speaking to older expats who lived through this process, reminds me of visa restrictions that are currently in place for expats living in Thailand and other popular expat destinations; it can be done, but it is not easy. For me, this right of residency has been one of the greatest advantages of being a member of the European Union. Others will say that expats from Switzerland and Norway, who are not within the EU, live quite happily as expats in Spain. This is partly true, but their right to remain in the country is one of individual agreement between governments, subject to political whim and political pressure, and not one of right, which UK expats currently enjoy within the EU. The reciprocity of health benefits is an area that concerns many expats living in Spain. The current arrangement for health cover being funded by the UK government would cease once the UK left the European Union. Expats would then be responsible for negotiating their own health insurance, or hope that some form of replacement agreement between the Spanish and UK governments would eventually be put into place. Currently, there is a safety net arrangement in place in Spain for those who became legal residents before April 2012, but again, this depends upon the attitude, generosity and financial pressures faced by a future Spanish government; it is not guaranteed. One has only to add the thorny issue of Gibraltar into the equation and the friendly relations that are currently enjoyed by both countries could quickly be soured. I suspect that healthcare would be a major issue of continuing concern for most expats living in Spain. Many expats rely upon a salary or pension from the UK. As we are already seeing, the value of the pound is falling rapidly and experts warn that this period of instability will continue until the referendum. This uncertainty and instability is already an example of what could happen if the UK left the EU, although eventually the pound could become stronger than the euro once again, but it may remain volatile. Credit rating agencies are already nervous about the UK leaving the EU and forecast a reduction in the UK’s credit standing. The credit rating agencies are already warning of both short-term disruptions, as well as long-term implications for the UK’s global financial standing. The UK Government will pay pensions wherever pensioners request, but there are no pension increases for pensioners living outside the EU. UK pensioners would find themselves in a similar position to expats living in Canada or Australia, whereby pensions are frozen at the same

rate as when they left the UK. Experts suggest that pensions would be frozen at the rate applicable at the date of the referendum should there be a vote to leave. Whatever the decision, what is in no doubt is the bumpy ride that we will all have to endure until June 23rd. As with all organisations, the European Union needs to recognise its imperfections and adapt to current conditions and the demands of citizens. Hopefully, this can be achieved though listening, discussion and mature negotiation. From the expat point of view, given the many financial, political and humanitarian issues that the World is currently facing, now is not the time to take a leap off the cliff. The wonder of unicorns One of the greatest gifts you have in this life is to connect with your magnificent Unicorn

ABOUT UNICORNS Unicorns are fully of the angelic realms and live in the seventh dimension, the seventh heaven, and they are aspect of the divine, the same way that angels are. They are white horses which have ascended into the higher dimensions and just like humans, horse reincarnate until they become perfected beings. In their case, they return to Earth again and again to learn their lessons, until they become white horses and can ascend in a blaze of light..then they will work with us in their spiritual bodies as unicorns. While angels work through the heart, unicorns work with the soul Angels help and guide their human charges in all sorts of ways. They smooth our paths and respond to requests as long as they are for the highest good. They guard and protect those in their care and whisper higher choices to them. Their wings unfold, comfort and surround their charges. The great ascended horses on the other hand look for those who radiate a light and have a vision beyond theirselves. They seek people who aspire to help others and to change the world for the better, even of it is just their small corner of it. The light of the unicorn is so powerful that it enters people gradually, in waves, only as ever as much as an individual can cope with at any time. They help you to hold your vision and give your courage and faith to continue in the face of challenges and opposition. They strengthen and steady you so that you have the dignity and charisma to fight for what you believe is right. Unicorns grant wishes. Angels do this too for they grant wishes of the heart, those things that make you feel happier and lighter. Uncorns grant soul wishes, those things that satisfy you deeply and help you fulfil your pre-life contract Unicorns encourage you to hold on to your aspirations and visions,

to stand up for those ambitions that are for the highest good of all. They have the long term growth of your soul, your community and the world in mind. Clairvoyants see unicorns as shining white horses with a spiralling horn of light from their brow chakra, the chakra of enlightenment. Their horn can be likened to a magic wand, pouring out divine energy. Wherever they direct this light, healing takes place. This is not just physical and emotional healing but also soul healing. They dissolve and heal the deepest, most profound wounds of the soul which have plagued you for many lifetimes. If you are ready, the unicorns can help you clear all that karma, whether these are personal, family or country lessons. You can call on them for help. Unicorns reconnect people to their spirit. When you think about a unicorn it wakens an energy within you that aligns to the higher realms. And if you meet a unicorn in dreams or meditations, your soul in connecting to the unicorn energy and great changes take place. Behind the scenes they are inspiring you. The unicorns carry qualities of love, peace, calm, gentleness, hope, majesty, caring, magic, and mystery. They will come to you when you are ready, helping you too to develop your unicorn qualities. Of course, they work in co-operation with animals as well as angels and elementals. While they are perfectly balanced in their male and female qualities, they are considered to carry feminine energy. This is because wisdom, compassion and love are more powerful that masculine qualities. One of the greatest gifts you can have in this life is to connect with your magnificent unicorn DO YOU WANT TO MEET YOUR UNICORN...unicorns is a being of pure white light. Whatever happened to democracy? God forbid we ever have to live in a community where there is only one opinion which counts, as suggested by one group of writers in last weeks' letters' page! Since moving to Spain thirteen years' ago I've been appalled to learn of the level of corruption which exists in Spanish politics, at both National and Local levels, though I don't for one moment believe that the PP have exclusivity on that score; let's just say that, in recent times, allegations of corruption appear to be more rife, or perhaps they're just becoming more difficult to

HELP Friendship centre for La Marina HELP Vega Baja opened the doors of its second Friendship Centre recently at the Posh Club, La Marina. Following the success of the Centre at La Zenia which has been in existence for 12 years, two of the La Marina volunteers approached the President, Michele Masson, and suggested that a new Centre should be set up in la Marina as there were so many people living alone on the urbanisation who were in need of company and friendship. “We thought this would be a great idea and suggested that they went away to visit the La Zenia Friendship Centre to see how it was run and presumed that it would possibly be some time before we would hear back from them, but how wrong were we! We had not taken into consideration the deter-

mination of the volunteers had to replicate the idea in their own area” After canvassing the views of residents, organising a venue, volunteers and publicity, the Friendship Centre opening day finally arrived. Co-ordinator Alan Burnside said “We were absolutely delighted to see the number of people that attended on the first day and are confident that as word gets around the area, even more will join in. Many guests said how wonderful it was to have somewhere to go to get together with others which is exactly what we were aiming to achieve”. camouflage. I am no apologist for the PP but I am a fervent believer in democracy and it surely cannot be beyond the wit of those who criticize my stance to remember that we had a local election barely a year ago, the result of which delivered the present council so, contrary to what has been suggested, there must be rather a lot of people 'as blind as me' around – perhaps they're just not as vocal! I wonder, can anyone name a Council anywhere which satisfies all of its local tax payers all of the time? Everyone, everywhere can find something to complain about when it comes to their Council. Councils, like every other choice we have to make in life, are good or bad by comparison and in my experience since moving to La Marina, I've known a good deal worse. Constantly portraying Urb. La Marina as a run-down shantytown in the media does the place we live in a great disservice and is hardly the best advert for those poor souls who are struggling to sell their houses - and to think, people have the gall to say it's not political – please pull the other one! IT’S A ‘LOCAL’ VENUE FOR CLARO CLARO held another ‘Meet and Greet’ last Friday evening with an encouraging number of people attending. The venue for their 3rd such event was The LOCAL in La Florida with bar owner Derek Bertam laying on an excellent selection of tapas for those who attended the meeting. Party leader Paul Piccio said he was delighted to see a healthy number of ‘first timers’ at the gathering which included young local businessmen as well as expat retirees. He said that such events were helping the Party to build on it’s firm Orihuela Costa base and with this growing support he was very much looking forward to the challenges ahead. Details of the next ‘Meet and Greet’ function, which are held on a monthly basis by CLARO, will be announced shortly.

Policia Local praised for fire rescue Officers from Orihuela local police are being praised by their colleagues for showing the utmost bravery in entering a burning building to rescue the occupants.

A woman had passed out inside her El Escorratel home, suffering the effects of smoke inhalation and seeking refuge on the top floor. Her attempts to escape the fire made the rescue all the

more difficult, but the officers managed to rescue the victim, tending to her until the ambulance arrived to take over the medical care.

HOW TO NEGOTIATE ROUNDABOUTS If you are unsure about the correct way to negotiate roundabouts, here are some simple rules to help you enter and exit roundabouts safely and in the right lane.

APPROACHING ROUNDABOUTS It’s important to remember to give way to traffic already on the roundabout. If the roundabout is outside urban areas of towns or cities, keep right. If the roundabout is in a built-up area inside a town or city and the lanes are clearly marked, you should use the lane that best corresponds to the exit you need to take.

can be more complex. Let us see some examples. 1st EXIT RIGHT Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate and exit roundabout. CONTINUING STRAIGHT ON (e.g. 2nd EXIT STRAIGHT AHEAD) Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate prior to exit and leave roundabout.

LEAVING ROUNDABOUTS

TURNING LEFT OR CHANGING DIRECTION (e.g. 3rd OR FINAL EXIT)

This causes the most confusion amongst drivers. Which lane to choose? Why do I get beeped at if I’m in the right lane? Drivers must exit roundabouts from the right hand lane, because the only way to leave the roundabout is by turning right. This doesn’t mean we always have to enter the roundabout from the right hand lane. It depends on the exit we need to take. However this simple rule, in practice,

Enter roundabout keeping to left hand side lane. Stay in lane until you have passed the exit before your turn off, then change lane by indicating right and giving other road users sufficient time to anticipate your manoeuvre. Don’t forget that drivers circulating in the outside lanes have priority, so use your mirrors to ensure you are not blocking them as you change lanes.

We hope the information provided in this article is of interest to you.

El Rancho Bowls Club

SAN LUIS BOWLS CLUB

The weekend proved a little interesting for the club championship finals mainly caused by a strong cold wind, just a reminder of why we are all here, bringing about a couple of deferred matches until next Saturday. Of course playing finals in February will always be a risk; at what point do you defer a match, particularly when some might be scheduled for two in the day. Certainly on Sunday the wind was not as cold, but it certainly caused some consternation, as bowls went in an unplanned direction at an unforeseen speed, or could it be that our failing bodies do not behave as our equally questionable brains direct, certainly mine does not. But that is part of the game, sometimes the result is not as anticipated, but it’s always on the day and perhaps it is just a question of who can outguess a changing wind. Monday found The Pintos with a bye and the afternoon took the Broncos to Emerald Isle to play The Moonrakers, just another episode in a long learning curve. But good fun anyway, whatever the result, but we should be always aware that the home team will normally win. The broncos came away with one rink and I am sure some experience and at least one laugh. On Friday The Mustangs played host to the very strong Blues from La Siesta, on a beautiful day with a wind that was swirling and growing in strength as the match went on. The Blues played very well and half way through the match were ahead on most rinks, looking bleak for The Mustangs. But character showed through and with resolve points were fought for and won, The Mustangs pulled back to 3 rinks each by the end of play, with The Mustangs taking the overall shots by a small margin. A good show by both teams, The Blues did very well to take 3 rinks away from home, but it was a good result for The Mustangs against a strong team, playing well. Henry Ryder, Dave Haynes and Richard Lee 15-12. Ron Edwards, Jim Gracie and Jane Hamill 24-11. Carolyn Harris, John Skipper and Shirley Edwards 21-12. Maxine Wright, Malc Sykes and Rod Wright 9-17. June Whitworth, Don Darby and Stew Hamill 14-19. Barbara Jones, Keith Cunningham and Geoff Jones 17-18. By Lubbertus Who said it couldn’t get worse? Well me actually last week, but I was wrong. Of the ten names on the scorecard this week only one had appeared before the last match two weeks ago. The newbie’s really do seem to be taking over in earnest. On a crisp morning, again, but this time with a stiff breeze the society headed for the Saurines de la Torre Golf to play a 2,3,4 Stableford tournament. Saurines really is a golfer’s golf course with lots of tricky traps for the unwary so the members set off with high hopes. Maybe it was the cold wind, maybe it was the traps on the course, maybe it was just St David’s Day, and maybe the old timers cut the newbie’s just a little too much slack. All the old timers had their own reasons for not appearing on the score sheet – again! But the scores were none the less impressive. First place went to newcomer John Macleod with Mike Newton who first appeared on the score sheet last week on 40 points. 2nd place went to another newcomer, Amin Kiam with the only old-timer on the sheet this week, Robin Hanna on 39 points. Third place went to Patricia Hanna with Kevin McHale , both of whom first appeared last week on 38 points. Extra kudos needs to go to Kevin McHale who also won Hole 6. He only appeared first last week and this week he is on the sheet twice. Although kudos also needs to go to all the other hole winners this week as it is their first time on the card. Hole 10 was won by Mike Downton, Hole 14 by Tony G and Hole 18 perhaps one of the most difficult par three holes around with its tiered green went to John Macloed. All in all it was a very thoughtful retreat to the “19th hole” at the Marinasol Restaurant in Cabo Roig that evening. The Happy Days Golf Society’s next competition is on 15th March at the La Serena Golf course. New members are always welcome, especially new comers, so if you would like to join or just want to know more, then ask Steve Dixon, or any of the staff at the Marinasol Restaurant in Cabo Roig and they would be more than willing to help.

Venue The Junction Semi Finalists: John Eyre & Nick Spicer, The HUB We had a somewhat depleted pairs turn out at the Junction but some big names were amongst the 5 duos. John Eyre and Nick Spicer from the Hub were pulled out of the hat first to play a preliminary against local lads Jimmy Gray and Barry ‘Here we go’ Schofield of the Junction Jackals. The hub guys were in fine form and chipped away at the 601 with Eyres scoring 2 x 81 and Spicer getting a tasty 100, 97 and 137. It was Eyre who finished both games though, with T18, D2 for the first and S18, D9 for the second. Barry with a 77, 85 and Jimmy with a 100 were a little late to find any scoring that could match the victors.Next up was the Formidable Mark Filer and Ed Klimonis from El Capitan who were drawn to play Massey’s Steph Simpson and Merv Harley. Steph got a 95 and Merv an 81 in the first leg but Klimonis scored 140 and 100 and partner Filer scored 85 and checked out on D8. The Men from Massey’s got a 100 apiece in leg two plus an 83 but the Capitans also kept up with their scoring and Filers D10 checkout put an end to their progress. So it was up to Mrs Simpson and team mate de Lacy to see if they could do something miraculous against the hunks from the Hub …yeah well that wasn’t going to happen was it? The lads saw off the lasses not only with great scoring including Spicer’s 140, but also with their unmatchable finishing: - Spicer this time with T15, S20, D10 for the first leg and T8, D20 for the 2nd. De Lacy did get on the scoreboard with a modest 85 though. So the quarter final was between league leaders El Capitan and the Hub who are currently in 2nd place. Filer managed a 140 but little Eyrsy put out an 82 and 100 and Spicer clocked up 81, 83 x 2, 85 and a 100 and checked out D10 in the first leg and a showboat bull finish in the second. Johnny and Nick played consistently good games to see themselves through the semi-finals. With a big thank you to Nigel Elvery for doing the chalking, it was all done and dusted by 9:30pm! Report Simone de Lacy Venue The Porterhouse Semi finalists Jim Scott : Phill Waller, Breakaways We had 7 pairs last night and this was a great turnout at The Porterhouse, Rioja Centre, Los Dolses. There had to be a bye because of the 7 pairs and as the names were drawn André Wing and Alan Havelock took the first bye which moved them into round 2. In Round 2 ALE HOUSE duo Karl Mallinson and Bernie Whipday took on Breakaways Jim Scott and Phill Waller. Bernie swiftly whipped up D20 to take the first leg and the duo also notched up scores in the 80’s and 100. Scott and Waller were soon on the case and pulled back the 2nd leg also with some great darts, Scott finished on D20. The Breakaway duo smashed their first round when Waller got D4. In the next pairs El Capitans Mel Bettell and David

Rotella v Jaguars Pat Schofield and Hilda Wilkinson saw the Capitans duo take the first leg thanks to D14 finish. Pat levelled this game with D2 taking the 3rd leg to a nail biting finish awaiting the double. The ladies tried so hard with plenty of scores in the 80’s & 90’s from Pat also a 128, but Mel just wouldn’t let them win! Number 7 in the 1st round saw my colleagues John Lane & Eddie Hirst v Andy Rutter & Hugh Gallaway. The Pirates duo were slow to find their form in the first leg as the Junction pair steamed ahead, however just as it was nearly at an end Hirst hit 115, Rutter missed his double and Lanes arrows went in T14, D16! The Junction duo fought back with high scores 4 x 100, 90’s and a 120 to level and then win this round with an impressive 61 out from Gallaway. In round 2 Ale House pair Wing & Havelock faced Scott & Waller but, although well rested from their wait to play, failed to find their form. Havelock threw 2 x 100 and Waller the monkey man got a 140. Bettell & Rotella couldn’t keep up with Rutter and Gallaway with some pretty impressive arrows from Rutter to take them to round 3 v Scott & Waller. Rutter was fearless as he chucked 80’s & 90’s aplenty and a 3 darter 24/17/D2 for the 1st leg. Although they couldn’t hit the high scores Scott n Waller took the 2nd leg. In the final leg Waller was monkeying about, told him to zip it, but he’s more like Bungle than Zippy. There was a nail biting finish as both needed doubles but Scotty boy finished off the night with D20, leaving Rutter and Gallaway beamed up by Scotty. Venue The Hub Semi finalists Joe Miller: Joe Mcaulley The Hub This evening unfortunately one pair had to withdraw from the KO due to a bereavement leaving 6 pairs to contest the evening. The draw was done with 2 pairs drawing byes: Sonya Cooper & Leah Chesworth and John Ashworth & George Cain. And so the evening began with the first game between Jim Waddell & Den Hall v Joe Miller & Del Mcaulley. Some steady scoring in the first leg with Jim hitting a 81 & 95. Del replied with a 120 before finishing on x10. The second leg was a much better leg with both teams scoring well, Joe scoring a 100 & 135 Jim & Den replying with Jim 125, Del with 100, 92, 85 finishing on x16. The deciding leg had some good scoring with Jim hitting 85,100. In reply Joe & Den scored 81, 100, 81,85 and a fishing shot of 20, 10, x5.The second game saw the 2 pairs from the P.D. Queens drawn against each other. Lorraine & Debbie vs Vi & Rachel. In this first leg Lorraine and Debbie scored well with scores of 107, 61, 76, 64. Vi and Rachel replied with 78, 64, 72, 78. Both teams had shots at x1 to win with Debbie the first to find it. The second leg was not so good with both teams evenly matched, both having chances to win when Vi found the x4 to even the match. The decider saw a better game with Lorraine hitting a 78 & 93. Rachel hitting a 80 both teams reaching x1 and Debbie clocking out to give herself and Lorraine the win. The third game of the evening saw Sonya Cooper & Leah Chesworth v Joe &Del. There was some good scores from both pairs with the girls hitting a 60’s & 81 & the guys scoring a 100 and straight out on a x20 tops finish. The second leg saw the girls scoring well with 73, and at one time were 200 in front of Joe & Del, they did reply with a 100. and scored steadily to catch up and finally finish on a x4 giving them a 2-0 win. The fourth game saw John Ashworth & George Cain v Queens Lorraine & Debbie. The first leg was fairly even with some good scores John & George scoring 76, 80, Lorraine & Debbie hitting 60’s before George hit a winning x2. The second leg saw the girls take control with scores of 70, 71, 81, with little in reply the girls clocked out on a x5. The decider was a more even game with scores from John & George scoring 101, 75 in reply Lorraine and Debbie hit 53,60, 76. before both teams got to the dreaded x1 which was hit by George. The final game of the night saw Joe & Del versus John & George. The first leg saw Joe & Del go off like an express train with scores of 125, 140, 85, 121, WOW down to 130 in 12 darts. With no high scores in reply the tempo slowed for them to finish on x4. The second leg was a good leg also with Joe & Del hitting 81, 95, 139 this was 60, 54, and a shot at the Bull for a 164 finish missing the Bull by a wire in the 25. John & George had a better leg scoring 76, 87. before a x8 saw Joe & Del go through to

the finals night winning 2-0. They were the pair of the night, well done. Venue Sporting Life Semi finalists Simon Williams : Sean Smith The Hub Seven teams turned up for what proved to be an entertaining and competitive qualifying round. The evening started with a close match between the two Pete’s , Cliff & Smith, from Massey’s just losing out to Ron Chadwick and Martin Hastings (Breakaways) who came from 1 nil down to nail a good win. The next leg saw Kenny Wilkinson & Phil de Lacy (junction Jackals) beat Des field & Craig Miller (Massey’s) 2 – 0 but the game was much closer than the score suggests. An unusual but skilful 36 finish (D4, 14, D7) by Kenny sealed the win. Next up were Wendy Haywood and Lisa Ivill from The Junction Jaguars against Si Williams and Sean Smith from the Hub. Despite a 140 from Wendy this went the way of the fellas in fairly quick time with Si scoring 2 x 100 and 140. On to round two and landlord Karl Cooper entered the fray with Dick Hunt. Having waited patiently for their turn following a bye in round 1 their evening ended 2 – 0 against Ron and Martin. The other semi-final saw Phil and Kenny lose to Si and Sean 2 - 0. The men from the Junction seemed to have their Hub opponents on the ropes in the second leg reaching a double with a 200 plus lead. However a combination of poor finishing and some good end game scoring saw Sean hit the winning double. That left the decider between Ron and Martin and Si and Sean. All seemed to be going to plan for the lads from the Hub as they quickly took a 1 – 0 lead. But the Breakaway boys wouldn’t lie down and levelled the match. The last leg was close but laurels and the place in the semi – finals went to Si and Sean. Report Alan Nash Rescheduled game from 25th Feb Tradewinds v Hub Hellraisers 9-3 The first triples saw Gilly &Terry Kirby & Michelle Lane take a 1-0 lead with Terry finishing on D5, this after some good scoring from Michelle. 70, 74 and 81. The next triples went to Hellraisers, the Pirates having to play with 2 players, Claire Hughes finishing on D19 after some good scores from Lily Oldham, 83,87. Gilly joined Michelle and John Lane for the final triples & Gilly took the game on D2. The doubles all went to the Pirates with Terry & Eddie, Terry hit 102 and finished on D1, next John & Michelle saw John finish D2 after his 100 and Michelle's highest score of the night, 124. Harvey & Gilly finished the doubles, Harvey 3, D2 for a 5-1 half time score. The singles started with Michelle against Claire Hughes, Claire winning after 81 and D2. Eddie was next up against Joy and won with D10. Terry then was up against Cheryl and with 81 & D8 finish ensured a win for the Pirates. Cheryl however played well scoring 93 & 71. Harvey was then up against Lesley and really found his form, hitting 2 x 100, 85 and a D2 finish. Gilly v Ali with Ali finishing on 7, D2. The last match had John against Sue with John showboating with a 93 finish, T19, D18. Final score 9-3 to the Pirates. Man of the match for the Pirates was Terry Kirby with his 3 finishes. Well done to the Hellraisers for some good scoring and supporting one another in all the game. Report Terry Kirby Rescheduled game from 4th February Pint Depot Kings Porterhouse 3-9 Peter Ayres made a welcome return to the Porters team especially as Mike Newberry has now returned to the UK. Peter said that he hadn't played darts for months but if that’s true (not sure it is) it certainly didn't show. Pete was involved in 4 winning games and in his first game started off with 140, in the second 133 and he was well in front in his singles finishing quickly on D1. The first game went to PDK - it was a very long game with both teams on their doubles. The same was true of the last game with Graham Todd and Frankie which lasted ages with neither of them being able to get D1. Graham snatched it eventually.....There were some high scores and best finish of the night went to Frankie with a 63 finish (20,19, D12). Report Sue Sanderson

‘MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF (Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. SEASONAL GOLF PRICING Well it hardly seems 5 minutes since I was writing the last golf article on the subject of seasonal golf pricing introducing the winter offers. The bad news is that the good times are over because as from 1st March we have the return of the high season price strategy operated by our Spanish golf courses hosts. Love it or hate it but this strategy will continue to be used while tourist golfers continue to pay the higher prices and believe me they are because trying to get a tee time at courses such as Las Colinas and La Finca in March and April is a difficult task. Northern European golfers in particular flood to the region in the spring and return north in the summer months. Last year due to an improved exchange rate we saw the return in force of the British golfing tourist and despite a reduction on the exchange rate due to concerns over the UK exit from the European Community the long and wet winter has seen the same British tourist golfers heading for the sun to get any golf that they can as their courses have been closed for long periods. Unfortunately the resident British golfer has to endure higher prices for their golf during this period on an already stretched pension in many cases and having lost their heating allowance BUT there will be few courses where you can play for less than €50,including a buggy and these will only be available through agents such as Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. Torry season grinds to a halt at Los Arcos once again hit a tame shot straight down the keeper’s throat.

After losing their impressive 12 match unbeaten run, following a 3-0 mauling at Crevillente, Torry faced another difficult local derby on Sunday at Los Arcos Stadium, Orihuela. However, spirits were still high in the Torry camp as manager Pedreño had almost a full squad to choose from, Jorge being the only member still out injured. Back in October, they recorded a deserved 2-0 home victory over their near neighbours, but last season's 5-0 humiliation at Los Arcos is still very much in the supporters memory and one that they would very much like to put to bed with a victory this season. Orihuela meanwhile, have recently sacked manager Gabri Correa, replacing him with Francisco Pereda, and currently sit 8th in the table, 1 point and 1 place ahead of Torry. They have ex Torry players Ernesto and Alexis within their ranks, who would like nothing better than to put one over their old team mates. And with less than two minutes on the clock they were very much on the way to achieving that as a costly blunder by Rafa Gomez saw the 32 year old slip in attempting what seemed a straightforward clearance. His error allowed the ball to run through to Raul who made no mistake from close range to put the home side in front. This was the worst possible start for the visitors but as they grew into the game they

Orihuela CF ..................3 CD Torrevieja ...............0 began to create chances of their own. On 10 mins a Ruben shot went close following good wing play by the Torry forward. But with their own confidence high Orihuela were also pushing forward and a break midway through the half needed Luis Carlos to clear off the Torry line to stop the home side doubling their lead. Emilio turned a Ruben shot onto the post on the half hour before coming to Orihuela’s rescue with further saves moments later, the best of which, from Lewis, he parried to the feet of Sanchez, but only for the former Yeclano man to shoot high. A Luis Carlos effort was well saved by Emilio just prior to the internal but as the Torrevejense trooped off for their cuppa they could have had no complaints about being a goal behind at half time. The visitors could have been back on level terms almost from the restart but after a wonderful assist Lewis seems to have lost his shooting boots in recent week as he

It was a miss that Torry were to regret as they went a further goal behind moments later. Sub Chema had only been on the field for 2 minutes and with his very first touch of the game he connected at close range with Juanjo’s cross to stretch the Orihuela lead. A great through ball from Prieto saw Lewis shoot over the bar moments later and then the goal that really did put the game beyond the visitors. A free kick on the edge of the box which Theo bent around the Torry wall with Miguel rooted to his line. At 3-0 to Orihuela there really was no way back. Once again thoughts of last season’s humiliation sprang to mind. There were further opportunities for Suarez and Salvas of Torry before the normally ruthless Raul could have made it four with the miss of the match but no consolation for the visitors as two comprehensive defeats in successive weeks have seen the wheels come off any play off hopes that the blue and whites might previously have harboured. But with little more than pride to play for as they see the season out it doesn’t get any easier with next Sunday’s visit of third placed Elche Illicitano. The game kicks off at 5pm at the Vicente Garcia.

Carp - R - Us Club News This week the Clubs Anglers took the long trip up to the Pantano de Beniarres up past the town of Alcoy. This is a journey of 128km and is our first trip up there this year. The water level is at 26% which is identical to the level this time last year, although it is well down on previous years. Although it was a sunny day, it was very breezy with a bitterly cold wind, which made pole fishing quite difficult. The results of the match are as follows: In first place Steve Fell with 3.92kg, second Mark Foden with 2.62kg, third Pete Kerr with 1.50kg and in fourth place Jackie Breslin with 1.68kg.
