The Most Reverend JesĂşs Murgui, Bishop of the Diocese of OrihuelaAlicante paid a Pastoral visit to the Orihuela Costa Parish, Cristo Resucitado (The Resurrection of Christ) last week, his first since the parish was established over six years ago. He spent two days with Parish Priest Don Joaquin Carlos Carlos as he toured the diocese, acquainting himself with many of the community groups and activities. The reasons for the visit were numerous. On Wednesday his first undertaking of the day was a meeting with the other religions that are residents of
the centre, the German Evangelist Church, the Church of England, the Norwegian Evangelist Church as well as the pastor and representatives of the Romanian Orthodox Church. He said how pleased he was that so many Christian churches were able to worship under one roof. He then went on to meet representatives of the Cristo Resucitado Catholic Church, members of an extended parish committee, including the parish administrators, lay preachers, altar boys and girls, the church choir, the tutors preparing the children of the Orihuela Costa for their first holy communion and for confirmation, and local charity workers of course, predominantly from Caritas. The Bishop said how important it was that ordinary parishioners were fully aware of the workings of these groups, how and when they could get in touch, particularly those requiring pastoral or charitable assistance. He said that the groups themselves should make their own especial efforts to reach out to such people, providing support and encouragement where it was necessary. Bishop Murgui returned to the parish on Sunday, but on this occasion the purpose was much more informal. He was there to meet his parishioners, and to bless the magnificent Retablo that now adorns the wall behind the altar. Painted and presented by Angel GambĂn, the original architect of the Cristo Resucitado temple, who also produced the Stations of the Cross, the Retablo is a devotional painting that now occupies the entire back wall of the church, and it certainly makes a difference. What was once just a concrete shell has been completely transformed by the painting, bringing some much needed

Following mass, Bishop Murgui conducted a question and answer session with parishioners in the church which lasted about 30 minutes. He concluded his presentation by saying how delighted he was to have been able to meet so many parishioners. He said that in a community consisting of 97 different nationalities and 5 churches Questions and answers after the role of parish priest was perhaps mass

Bench presented in memory of Keith
Members of The Playa Flamenca Walking Football team recently presented a bench to BABS WIGHTMAN in memory of the life of her husband KEITH, a valued member of the Walking Wanderers, Walking football team. The presentation was made by the President of the club Mr Robert Gorril, at the CDM Sports Centre in Playa Flamenca. It was at the Sports Centre that the unfortunate death of Keith occurred, just one of many recent incidents that have highlighted the appalling state of the Orihuela Costa Ambulance Service. It beggars belief to even think about what would happen if there were a major incident at La Zenia Boulevard just a kilometre away.
Taking place on Friday 4th March, also a commemoration of the life of KEITH WIGHTMAN, the Playa Flamena Walking Football Club have organised an International Walking Football Competition. The event will get underway at the C.D.M. Sports Centre Playa, Flamenca on Friday 4th March with the first game kicking off at 10 a. This will be an all-day event to which entry is absolutely free. There will be 8 participating teams and refreshments will also be available. Please come along and watch. Socialists criticise lack of Orihuela interest in Coast The PSOE in Orihuela have been raising concerns over seemingly forgotten areas of the municipality, namely those outside the centre perimeter, with a predominantly foreign community. María García raised a notion on Thursday to try to resolve one of the most dangerous areas of the coastal zone, the lack of pavements in certain key areas along main roads. In particular, concerns were raised over the La Zenia to Villamartin road, in the vicinity of the AP-7 motorway bridge, which still lacks any kind of pedestrian pathway on the Villamartin side, despite the opening of a pedestrian footbridge over the motorway during the last administration. The motion called for the 2016 budget to provide funds to resolve this matter of public safety, and to coordinate with the police for better signs and signals to improve road safety.
The road from the La Zenia motorway bridge through to Eagles Nest is absolutely littered with pot holes
García also pointed out that this is not the only area of the Orihuela Costa in need of urgent attention, and urges the coastal councillor to work with the infrastructure department to prepare a technical study of all municipal roads in the coastal area to design an emergency plan to remedy the shortcomings progressively. Meanwhile, García has also criticised the coastal councillor, Sofía Álvarez, who also holds the competencies for urban transport in the municipality, for her lack of resolution in providing a bus service for the residents of Entrenaranjos. Early this week, Álvarez explained that “we are waiting for response from the Ministry on the operation of the line”, as it is beyond the capabilities of the local team to make the decisions, and that the only reason that the service has not been put into operation is that the local government are waiting for ministerial approval. However, in response to the reason for the delay, García has pointed out that “until Friday, that authorisation had not even been requested so the Ministry cannot approve something that has not been requested”, an unacceptable state considering it was in September that the route was first promised, some 5 months ago.

New elections in June After weeks of political deadlock since the inconclusive polls in December, Spain's acting Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, said that Spain would "most likely" hold new elections on 26 June. A conversation between him and British Prime Minister David Cameron at an EU summit in Brussels was overheard in which he is alleged to have mentioned the date. "We have an investiture ceremony in March and I believe it will not work out," Rajoy was heard telling Cameron, apparently unaware that he could be heard on camera. He made the comments as Spain's Socialist chief Pedro Sanchez is struggling to form a minority government.
Winter crop damage The lack of rain and fluctuating temperatures have had a devastating effect on fruit and vegetable crops in the Bajo Segura, particularly with broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, as well as beans and artichokes. The damage has been blamed on the arrival of a band of Arctic polar air which has been with us since last Sunday, providing a week of near winter weather in the Vega Baja. Thousands of tons of vegetables will now be condemned and used food for cattle, due to its poor quality. This will result in a significant loss to many farmers.

CIUDADANOS WANT DOGS ON ORIHUELA BEACHES Ciudadanos say that they will ask for a beach to which dogs can be admitted at the next Plenary meeting of the Orihuela Council. They say that the initiative will help the tourism market, although quite how they fail to amplify. Councillors Juan Ignacio Lopez-Bas and Luisa Bone state that the 17 km Orihuela coastline should certainly be able to provide at least one beach that provides access to dogs and although they aren’t specific with any particular recommendation they give Cala Mosca as one example. They say that in order to win additional visitors into the area, beaches must be made accessible to people who enjoy the accompaniment of their pets, However they also insisted that the project should only go ahead if all health and hygiene guarantees are fulfilled. However Snr Lopez-Bas and Snra Bone, perhaps before you propose your initiative to the plenary you ought to first take a look at the dog fouling that is already so prevalent on the coast, particularly in public areas and parks where many young children play and where the disposal facilities you propose for the beaches are yet to be installed. I am absolutely fed up of asking dog owners to pick up the mess that they regularly leave deposited on our streets. Dog fouling is not just unsightly, it can also prove hazardous to people's health, so until you are first able to resolve that little difficulty in our streets and in our parks I wouldn’t want to see the problem moved onto our wonderful local beaches. Meanwhile CLARO also issued a press release of their own following the announcement by Ciudadanos questioning the priorities of Lopez-Bas and Bone when the Orihuela Costa lacks, not only emergency services but social services, clean streets, a cultural centre and

Juan Ignacio Lopez-Bas and Luisa Bone proper parks and gardens? They say that Orihuela politicians and political parties will be insulting the intelligence of those living in Orihuela Costa, some 50,000 tax and rate paying citizens, if they think a beach for dogs is a priority deserving the attention of a full Council meeting and how could we possibly entrust the Town Council with the cleanliness of a beach for dogs when they cannot ensure the cleanliness of the streets of Orihuela Costa or the Cala Mosca itself?
Spanish and Asian choirs to unite at Youth Habaneras
The twenty-second edition of Torrevieja’s Youth Habaneras will take place on 8 and 9 April in the city’s International Auditorium. Details of the programme were announced last week by the mayor

and chairman of the board of Habaneras, José Manuel Dolon and the Vice President of the Generalitat Valenciana, Domingo Soler. The event will see performances from over 450 choristers comprising of nine choirs, seven from within Spain and two international choirs from Indonesia and South Korea. The mayor said that "youth is a guarantee of continuity and the Youth Habaneras gives us confidence that the International Habaneras and Polyphony is in good health and has a great future." He said that "the competition, which was created in 1995 to complement the International Habaneras Event, has become a reference for youth both within and from outside our borders and it has become a showcase for many young choirs.” The technical committee made their selection from twenty nine applications. Those chosen include three from Valencia, three from the Autonomous Community of Madrid and one from the Castilla y Leon plus the two international choirs from Indonesia and South Korea.
Socialist leader Maria Garcia, met with a group of residents from the Entre Naranjos urbanization recently to demand the introduction of a twice daily bus service connecting them with the hospital and the coast that was announced by Costal Councillor Sofia Alvarez last September. After the existing weekly bus was scrapped in preparation for the more regular service, the launch date was scheduled for December. However Alvarez explained that the service is not yet operating because she is still waiting for approval from the Regional Ministry of Transport. She said that all necessary steps have been taken by the Orihuela council and the claims made by Garcia that the director-general, Carlos Domingo is unaware of the service, are untrue. She said that she expects to hear from the Ministry shortly.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. basic questions, such as “What did you do yesterday?” or even “What did you do last month?” The engineer, who was suffering from depression, was stuck for words.
The Long, Lazy Lunch
In his defence, the engineer claimed that he might not have kept business hours, since he was the victim of workplace bullying; he had a family to support and felt that he would not get another job. In their defence, the council thought the engineer was the responsibility of the water board, whilst the water board thought that he was the responsibility of the municipality. It was rather a grey area.
Once upon a time there was a Spanish civil servant, an engineer, who was asked to collect an award after 20 years of loyal service to the Spanish state. On further investigation by his superiors, it turned out that he had not appeared for work for the last six years, although this could possibly be as many as fourteen years, no one is quite sure. Someone seemed to remember him popping out for lunch one day, but then all recollections of him after his siesta appear rather hazy. The 69-year-old engineer ‘worked’ for a Spanish municipality, but was later seconded to the local water board where he was asked to supervise a waste water treatment plant - quite an important job given that the good people of the municipality rather appreciate having clean water. Fast forward to 2012 when the engineer was due to collect a long service award. This was when the deputy mayor, who had recruited him in 1990, wondered where he was. He hadn't seen the engineer for some time, yet he was on the payroll. Maybe he had died? No, the engineer had not died, but was living quite happily and continuing to draw his annual salary of around 27,000 euros. The engineer was eventually found and challenged, but could not answer a few
This week, a court fined the engineer the equivalent of one year of his annual salary, since it seems that he had not occupied his office for at least six years, although it could be as many as fourteen years. No one had noticed or, it seemed, cared.
Meanwhile, I am wondering who was the engineer’s line manager, and whether they skipped work as well? Of greater concern to the good people of the municipality, I imagine, is whatever happened to supervising the waste water treatment plant? Maybe the water quality in that area has been a little suspect for the last fourteen years? Anyway, readers will be pleased to know that the engineer put his spare time to very good use. He spent it by studying philosophy and is now an expert on the works of Spinoza, the Dutch philosopher to whom we give thanks for laying the foundations of the Enlightenment. That’s all right then. I always did like a happy ending, although I really cannot say whether the engineer received the long service award, and yes, this is a true story. SAN FULGENCIO TRANSPORT GRANT Dear Editor, Your brief snippet regarding school transport in San Fulgencio in this week’s paper carries what I regard as a ‘misinterpretation’ of the facts. I suspect that this is not the fault of your newspaper; but rather is due to the ‘spin’ applied to the story by the PP administration. The increase for school transport is not because of ‘savings’ elsewhere in the budget. The council requested that an amount of 450,000€ be included in the Provincial Plan for the resurfacing and repair of roads on the Urbanizations. A contribution from municipal funds was approved for this year’s budget on the understanding that inclusion in the Plan was a ‘done deal’. However, through accident and/or incompetence or lack of funds, the application was denied.
The administration then proposed annulling their contribution and reallocating the money to other expenditure; hence the announced increase for school transport. By the way, this necessary and useful expenditure had been ‘overlooked’ during the original budget process! All opposition councillors voted against the reallocation on the grounds that, once again, the residents of the Urbanizations lose out. The contribution from San Fulgencio amounted to slightly over 20% of the total project for repair to our roads – a not insignificant figure. Surely, it would have been better to spend that money on improving the infrastructure on the Urbanizations? Surely, an alternative source could have been found? Let’s see… - what about cancelling a Heavy Metal concert that, as far as I can make out, only a handful of people actually want? Yours faithfully, Joe Pilkington (PSOE councillor)
A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. Dear Editor Today I took a walk along Avenida San Fulgencio in La Marina and to my surprise I found that the council have at last cleaned the roads, weeded the kerbs and cut back all the shrubs and trees and swept the shingle off the pavements! I can now now push my daughters buggy along the pavement in safety and not have to use the roads! Do I thank the council for doing their job for the first time in 12 months or Len Allen for his campaign? I guess most will know why the council after such a long period of in activity have sprung into action, thanks Len Allen/MURA! May I turn my attention to the "cobblers" written by Ken Turner (again), his continued support of the council is baffling, there can't be many on the
urbanisation as blind as him, does he not read the papers (Spanish and English) or watch Spanish TV where not a week goes by without some more damning pieces of information coming to light about the PP party? t's all about corruption and dodgy deals and Mr Turner supports this. He claims to write to present the other side of the argument, does he not realise sometimes there is "no other side". I bet he believes Oscar Pistorius is innocent! It does appear Mr Turners weapon of choice is the key board as I did not notice he was at the recent MURA meeting to voice his opinion and defend the council.Mr Turner and the council need to duck, there's a canon in front of you now! Ellen Scammell's letter last week summed up nicely the general response one gets when visiting our town hall. Lets hope we get a continuation of the clean up work on the urbanisation, who knows perhaps even the council and our absent mayor may even start see the benefits and difference it makes. Faithfully Anna Slade, Gill Waterhouse, Cory McNair and Dave Temple.

MISSING THE POINT Yes Ms Virginia Pilkington you are right let's not "Miss the Point". Lots have been said about my letter, we are in a free speech country anyone can say whatever. But let's focus and stay away from politicians and politics. It is not true as one said "all is politics after all". Some might think the squares and gardens in the urbanization are The Versailles (maybe they come from a depressed neighbourhood). Some might think it is Heaven on Earth now that they can sign a petition right here at the urbanization and "in English" (maybe that they have skills to learn a second langua-

They have free cars, free petrol, free trips, jobs for friends and family members, free contract for their friends business, and more. And after their term they are still entiltled for an employed aid for 2 full years. I just want a decent place to live. MURAOpen Meeting A meeting was held at The Sports Complex in La Marina of the Marina Urbanisations Residents Association (MURA) on the 24th February. The attendance figure proved the need for the association. The degree of questioning and the content from the floor was justification for the meeting and a good barometer of the strength of frustration and anger of most of the residents of the Urbanisation of La Marina feel. The consensus was the urb has been sorely and wilfully neglected by successive administrations over the years but none more so that the current PP council of San Fulgencio. The secretary of MURA (George Scammell) outlined the aims of the organisation and stressed yet again it is not nor will be a political party but will use whatever influence it has to get the urbanisation the services that have either been withdrawn or neglected. During a PLENO meeting attended by MURA it was stated the council is 6m euro's in debt with unpaid bills and when challenged over where the SUMA money gets spent the Mayor refused to say. It was noted how the mayor appeared to display an apathetic approach to the meeting. It is common practice for urbanisations with 5k inhabitants to have representation via a residents association and it appears La Marina is only one of five in Spain that thus far has not had
one. One purpose of the association is to represent through it's strength in numbers the issues that concern it's members and the residents of the urbanisation. Some concerns and issues that were highlighted from the committee and the floor included: Completion of the Church Provision of a Lottery outlet Prompt and timely spraying of mosquitoes and cockroaches Proper road markings and crossings Repairs to footpaths and walkways Control and where necessary removal of billboards/advertising boards (there are something like 42 from the police station to the garage on Avda San Fulgencio!) Inadequate policing levels Better facilities for the children, youth and the more “mature” in age A remedy to the unfinished complex next to the market place Provision of an adequate bus service (re instate the train?) Clean up the waste ground opposite Domti that had originally been designated “for educational purposes” The plight and injustice to the residents of Marina Oasis over their roads and unfair tax bills The illegal dumping of waste outside the council tip None of this is expected to happen over night but simply highlights the problems that residents have expected the council to deal with over many years but have been woefully neglected. It is anticipated the legal paper work for MURA (the statutes) will be finalised and presented within the coming days. This will be followed up by a dedicated web site for MURA (www.mura.org.es). As the meeting closed more residents joined MURA, a small subscription of 5 euro's per head to cover all running costs (statutes, legal expenses etc) is required, a full set of audited accounts will be available for scrutiny at the MURA offices at no 107 C/Madrid where people can also register (please come armed with your NIE). The phone number for MURA is 634 357 979.
There will be a fund raising night on the 22nd March at The Sports Complex, tickets are available at 5 euro's from the club. It is important that as many residents of the urbanisation register with MURA, it is the best and most likely way that the urbanisation will get it's fair share of funding that it sorely has missed over recent years. At the conclusion of the meeting thanks was expressed from the floor for the hard work put in by the 12 committee members, the treasurer, secretary and chairman Gilberto Diaz who translated for the Spanish members of the audience. On leav-

ing there was a palpable feeling of solidarity and willingness to tackle the issues. Individuals still should take their grievance to the council should they so wish. The message was clear from the floor to the council “enough is enough, we will not tolerate such shoddy treatment and bad service any more”. M.L

HOW TO NEGOTIATE ROUNDABOUTS If you are unsure about the correct way to negotiate roundabouts, here are some simple rules to help you enter and exit roundabouts safely and in the right lane.
APPROACHING ROUNDABOUTS It’s important to remember to give way to traffic already on the roundabout. If the roundabout is outside urban areas of towns or cities, keep right. If the roundabout is in a built-up area inside a town or city and the lanes are clearly marked, you should use the lane that best corresponds to the exit you need to take.
LEAVING ROUNDABOUTS This causes the most confusion amongst drivers. Which lane to choose? Why do I get beeped at if I’m in the right lane? Drivers must exit roundabouts from the right hand lane, because the only way to leave the roundabout is by turning right. This doesn’t mean we always have to enter the roundabout from the right hand lane. It depends on the exit we need to take. However this simple rule, in practice, can be more complex. Let us see some examples. 1st EXIT RIGHT Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate and exit roundabout. CONTINUING STRAIGHT ON (e.g. 2nd EXIT STRAIGHT AHEAD) Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate prior to exit and leave roundabout. TURNING LEFT OR CHANGING DIRECTION (e.g. 3rd OR FINAL EXIT) Enter roundabout keeping to left hand side lane. Stay in lane until you have passed the exit before your turn off, then change lane by indicating right and giving other road users sufficient time to anticipate your manoeuvre. Don’t forget that drivers circulating in the outside lanes have priority, so use your mirrors to ensure you are not blocking them as you change lanes.

Surge in expats applying to register to vote as EU Referendum date is set The announcement of the date for the Referendum on the UK’s membership of the European Union has triggered a surge in the numbers of British expats wanting to register to vote. Latest figures show thousands of British nationals who live overseas are now going to www.gov.uk/register-to-vote in order to be able to have their say on 23 June. The average daily rate of online registrations by Britons abroad has quadrupled from an average of just over 600 per day before the announcement of the referendum date last weekend, to more than 2600 per day since then. The Electoral Commission has launched a global campaign to encourage an estimated five million Britons living overseas to check their eligibility to vote ahead of the referendum on EU membership. The Foreign Office
is supporting the campaign overseas, including in Spain. The British Ambassador Simon Manley, visiting Malaga on Tuesday (23 February), said: “Whether you think the UK should remain in or leave the EU, the 23rd of June will be your chance to have your say. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for the British people to decide. “You might be asking yourself, why bother to vote? Although you may now live in Spain, most expats still have strong ties with the UK – financial, family, friends. You may also decide to return one day. So you very probably do have a stake in the outcome and how it may affect your life. I strongly encourage you to register to vote – just go online and follow the simple process.” If you have been on the UK electoral roll
CLARO clean up of Cala Mosca To draw attention to the lack of attention by the Town Council to the cleanliness of Cala Mosca, C.L.A.R.O. volunteers spent several hours last weekend collecting litter and rubbish in the area. It was hardly a surprise that several days later, the neatly arranged piles of rubbish had still not been removed by the Orihuela Costa rubbish collection service. In a statement to the local media the party also raised the matter of a burning rubbish container in Calle Salzillo, not far from the La Zenia roundabout, which was not attended by the fire brigade for fully 40 minutes, despite concerns that the fire could spread to local properties. This, they claim, is a perfect example of the need for Orihuela Costa to have a proper Emergency Services Centre with ambulances, fire engines and local and national police. In December last year, C.L.A.R.O. organised a demonstration in front of the skeleton of the Emergency Services Centre whose foundation stone was laid 10 years ago demanding that the Centre should be completed. This demonstration was called after several recent cases of ambulances arriving late, sometimes also after 40 minutes. On occasions, those for whom they had been called subsequently died.
within the last 15 years, you are eligible to vote. Former residents of England, Scotland and Wales can quickly register at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. If you last lived in Northern Ireland then you need to download an overseas voter application form from the Electoral Office for Northern Ireland, at www.eoni.org.uk. Torrevieja flagship store closed down
Torrevieja town hall sent the Local Police into an outlet store selling for a national chain this week, closing them down for safety and licencing reasons. The officers entered the El Corte Inglés Outlet store on Calle Apolo on Tuesday, asking shoppers to vacate the premises and issuing the closure notice. The planning department sent the police into the 1,700 square metre store which apparently did not possess a licence for the purpose it was operating and lacked a number of fire safety requirements such as hydrants. The store management argued that the premises was fitted with a sprinkler system, but this was not enough to satisfy the minimum safety requirements. The store opened in 2008 and had been operating as a retail space, changing in 2012 to its current form as an outlet store. It would appear that this is the first time safety concerns have been raised in the 8 years of operation, although the closure is expected to be temporary, once the premises has been made safe and legal. According to the town hall the company were advised of their failings in October but the company requested two months to remedy the situation. They presented plans to the town hall which would satisfy the safety requirements and commenced the remedial work. However, during an inspection earlier this month it was found that equipment and evacuation routes still failed to comply and were contrary to the submitted plans. These latest failings have now been resolved and the Vice President of the company has apologised to Torrevieja town hall for their failings and for the bad image that this may give the firm, whilst pointing out that nobody had questioned their licencing previously.

Last weekend The Porterhouse hosted a surprise 70th party for their darts team player Mike Newberry (featured in photo, the one with the banner). Mike’s wife and friends treated Mike to a Quesada fish and chip supper and Mike was happy with his lot and was completely gob smacked when they arrived at the Porterhouse to a rendition of Happy birthday from his friends and fellow darts players. Many thanks to Con and Yvonne roof rack for the music and cheesecake, Sue Sanderson and friends for the lovely Spread and of course Tommy and Josie at The Porterhouse. Sporting Life Misfits v Junction Jaguars Sonya and team gave an extremely warm welcome to the jovial jaguars at the Sporting Life Sauna! Poor George was still all of a fluster from an earlier encounter with a lady of maturity doing her

ironing in the nude but he somehow managed to hold it together for the darts only slightly hampered by a few flashbacks and the occasional reminder from the opposition. He teamed up with the lovely Leah and Sonya and they took the first triple with George hitting a 98 and Sonya scoring 81, 73 and finishing on D12. The defeated Poo, Woo and Hildy-Doo had overheated during the pre-game practice and had to retire to the cooler climes of the terrace before they could be deployed again in the pairs and singles. In the second triples, de Lacy (nickname to be decided), Psycho Simpson and Cnythia Jevons sweated it out against an on form John, Karl (100 x 2) and Dickie 77, 81, D2 to find themselves 2:0 down. We managed to pull the 3rd one back though despite some good scoring from Sonya 77, Dick 75 and Karl 60, 100 who were well matched by Sneezey Green, Cnyth’s 67 and Princess Poo’s 100, D2. The decidedly dodgy duo of de Lacy and D’Simpson evened up the score line by taking the first pairs over Nanny Cooper and the lady wit’ baby, when de Lacy switched to the lower end of the board and scooped a 108 and then a D4 finish. Dickie and expectant father Cooper 65, 83, D4 took the misfits ahead once more, despite our wilting Woo charging in with 55, 52, 70, 81 and back-up of Jevon’s 60, 85 – the finish however eluding them in a heat shimmering haze. By half time, John and George had gotten the Misfits to a 4:2 advantage and the Jaguars headed downstairs on mass to cool down, scratch a few posts and enjoy some lovely chicken curry. Princess Patty Poo 73, 81, 51 sadly lost her singles to the evercheery Chesworth but then Cnythia’s 66 x2, 77 and her infallible D1 checkout halted the feline decline and gave us a glimmer of hope. This was soon dashed when John’s 66, 82, D4 overcame the heatexhausted Woo’s efforts meaning that the very best we could do would be a draw. This started to look possible when de Burpy found form with 57, 57, 74, 83, 51 and D8 leaving her opponent still in the 200’s. Buy how could it be that Hilda’s 74, 122 and 50 didn’t place her to the finish first before George nailed it with D16? Sonya put the final nail in our coffin with a 71, D14 conclusion over old adversary Simpson who scored 53, 69 and 72 but then made scoring < 20 ‘s and ‘darts out the board’ somewhat of an art-form! I see the League B shield slipping away ladies… Report by Simone de Lacy who’s cat Pepper has been missing since Sunday 22nd Feb should anyone spot her -one of several that have worryingly disappeared in the last week apparently. tel 600 980 744 Ale House v Breakaways 5:7 Many thanks to Karl for diligently messaging me the results and the high scores but without a score sheet I’m unable to tell the real story.

The home side got away to a good start with Andy Rutter hitting 140 with his first 3 darts and Barry Schoffield adding a D20 finish. The teams then took it in turn to win legs making it 3 – 3 at the half way stage. Porterhouse then broke the pattern of play with Brian Nash (121 & D1) beating Nigel Elvery in the first singles leg. Again the teams very politely allowed each other to win leaving it at 6 – 5 and one leg to play. Up stepped Barry ‘ere we go’ Schoffield to hold his nerve and beat Mike Newberry to secure the draw. Special mention for two players – Andy Rutter from The Jackals who had 8 scores of 100 plus and a superb 2 dart 84 finish (T8 & D16) and Sid Cross from Porterhouse 6 scores of 100 plus and a 2 dart 88 finish (T60 & D14). It was that close. Report by Phil de Lacy

El Rancho Bowls Club What a splendid start to the week this morning was, a cool start brought out the sweaters, but we were soon down to shirt sleeve order. The Pintos were playing against The Diamonds at Quesada and as always provided great company and a tough match, in the end we came away with 2 rinks and a small overall shots deficit, a good result away to the Diamonds, a lovely morning all round Mean while The Broncos played host to La siesta Pioneers and put in a great effort to take 4 rinks with another drawn and the overall shots by a reasonable margin, what more can you ask than good bowls in good company and glorious sun. Friday found The Mustangs playing host to La Marina Dolphins, always good fun and plenty of laughs. However the bowls is of course competitive and odd newcomers to bowling on a fast mat can feel a little at a loss, where accuracy in line
and length are crucial and ignore the wind at your peril, particularly when it changes direction. The Dolphins put in a fierce performance, but in the end The Mustangs took 4 rinks with the other 2 being very close and the overall shots by an appreciable margin. In the bunker with Mick the Grip PHIL MICKELSON misses the 5’ putt that would have forced a playoff at Pebble Beach. Never mind Phil, there’s always the Masters. Vaughn Taylor hadn’t won a PGA Tour event since 2005. With no status on the Tour, he was only invited due to being a past champion. On the Sunday he stormed round in 65 strokes finishing at 17-under par to take the trophy. He said afterwards: “It’s been so long, I didn't even have my tour card. Now I'm invited to everything for two years, and I’m playing in the Masters. I can’t believe it.” Neither could Phil. THE PHOENIX OPEN wasn’t always a big draw. In 1971 Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer, golf’s brightest stars, had to be persuaded to attend the tournament, held at the Phoenix Country Club. The West Coast Swing included the Crosby Clambake at Pebble Beach, Torrey Pines, and Bob Hope’s Palm Springs, but a small group of players liked coming to Phoenix because it had a great atmosphere and all the proceeds went to charity. Not everyone was happy when the tournament moved to the Stadium Course in a downtown area of Phoenix in 1987, but in face of the competition it had to adapt or risk becoming obsolete. So “The People’s Major” at TPC Scottsdale became a party, the “Greatest Show On Grass.” Phil Mickelson, an ex graduate from
Arizona State University, could bring in the crowds, but after the magical hole-inone on the 16th by 21 year old Tiger Woods in 1997, the tournament reached a new level. That Saturday the anticipation and the buzz crackled across the grounds. Woods didn't disappoint. Now ‘Skyboxes’ have replaced the old corporate tents, and tickets for the luxury Bay Club on the 17th fetch over $50,000. In contrast, there is free entry on the Tuesday and $30 and $40 tickets after that. This year attendance reached 600,000 over the week, and to date local charities have received $100 million. The ‘Waste Management’ Phoenix Open has definitely survived. GARY McCORD, golf commentator for CBS, took his new robot named "Eldrick" (Tiger’s first name in case you didn’t know) out to the rowdy 16th hole on the Wednesday. Eldrick took a few wild swings and got a hole in one, to tumultuous applause. DANNY WILLETT’S 15’ putt in the Dubai Desert classic gave him his 4th European Tour title and lifted him to 12th in the WGR. Andy Sullivan, who came second, was equally jubilant, but if he needs a wild card for the Ryder Cup he’d better not upset the boss. Captain Darren Clarke got a bit fed up with Sully’s loud mickey-taking at the celebration dinner, and told him to pipe down. Nothing
worse than spoilt kids. REVEREND JOHN DURKIN, , asked if he was responsible for the perfect weather at a tournament: “No that’s Management, I’m in Sales.” A TIP FOR more distance: Address the ball as normal, draw right foot back 3 or 4 inches and then align hips and shoulders with feet. This will have the effect of creating more launch angle to give you that extra distance. AT THE JACK NICKLAUS Museum in Columbus Ohio: MacGregor Tommy Armour 3-wood. Nicklaus won all 18 of his majors and both U.S. Amateurs with this. “White Fang” Putter. Nicklaus made eight birdies in the finalround with this to win his second U.S. Open (1967.) MacGregor VIP 1-iron. Nicklaus won seven majors with this and hit one of his most memorable shots - the tee shot at the 71st hole at Pebble Beach in 1972. (My putter should be on the wall of my old club – most putts ever missed in one round.) UNWRITTEN LAWS: If you ever par the first three holes you’ll have a 20 minute wait on the next tee. Until next time: Happy Golfing. Contact Mick for your regripping and repairs. 638 859 475.
SPORTSMAN GS (The Galleon Bar), QUESADA @ Font Del Llop What's going on it is February and some players wore shorts and sleeveless shirts, it was a glorious day though, 25 degrees…..now that's the real reason we moved to play our golf on the Costa Blanca. Well only 18 players turned out for our outing at Font Del Llop. The course was in great condition with the greens running fast and the 1st cut had been cut back a little more, albeit it still managed to grab (and keep) a few players golf balls. With ideal weather conditions, sun shining and no wind it was destined to produce some good scores... We were not disappointed. After the outing we returned
to our new clubhouse The Galleon Bar, Plaza Blanca, Quesada where Tracey served up a scrummy spaghetti bolognaise, thoroughly enjoyed by all looking at the amount of players who returned for a second helping. A big thanks to Tracey for donating the Vino for the NTP's we covered 4 of the par 3's NTP, we run a 2's sweep which was not claimed so will run over to next month. ‘MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF (Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services).
Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. YOUR AUTOMATIC SWING The golf swing is directed by the golfer in two different ways, one set of instructions is provided by the way you think, both before and during the swing and the other way is through what is best described as your ‘automatic self’. You are all familiar with the way you think during your swing, even if at times you think of far too much and become confused but your ‘automatic’ is not so readily recognised, but it can be quite easily explained. Most body movements are guided below the level of conscious awareness by your automatic self and these movements which you will have ‘put in place’ by either teaching yourselves to play or by following the advice of the local pro is your swing, the one which natural talent and practise time has given to you. Your automatic swing is very personal and it is the one you use when golf stress refuses to allow your thinking mind to work in the logical order of your swing requirements and it is at these times you find out if your practise sessions and your pleasure golf days, were times when you programmed your automatic swing with a good procedure or bad procedure. Your ‘automatic’ is not only programmed with your personal physical movements, it is also the “store” of your practised emotions. If you practise being an angry golfer you can’t expect to be anything other than an angry golfer and if you are always afraid of competition and behave like this every time you have a card in your hand, then afraid is what you will be on competition day- ‘Practise is permanent’. Remember to practise good attitude and good movements as directed by your professional because this will help you groove a reliable automatic swing, which is the swing you use when the pressure is on.
We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. Blistering start brings three cheers for Crevillente Fresh from their superb victory over Novelda, Torry travelled to near neighbours Crevillente to do battle at the Enrique Mirales Stadium. Manager Jose Mas has recruited wisely in the transfer window, recent additions include ex Torry keeper Oscar, and striker Cesar. His side have not conceded a goal in their last 5 matches, currently lying 7th in div 3, some 4 places and 2 points ahead of their opponents. Pedreño, however, had selection problems, but for all the right reasons, as the Torry manager welcomed back Javi Selvas, Chupe and Rendondo from the injury list. A physical midweek friendly against Austrian side WSG Wattens more than tested the fitness of the trio, who all appeared to come through the encounter unscathed. As the game got underway Torry were quicker out of the blocks when Rafa Gomez created a golden opportunity in the opening minutes. With only Oscar in the Crevillente goal to beat, he hit the ball straight at the former Torry keeper to waste a brilliant chance of putting the visitors in front. It was a miss that the visitors were quickly to rue. Indeed it soon became clear that if Torry were to get anything out of this game they needed to do to Crevillente what no other team had been able to in over 450 minutes of football, that is to score, because with just 6 minutes on the clock Abraham had volleyed the home side into an early lead. Finding himself unmarked on the edge of the box the Crevillente number nine did well as the heavens opened, unfortunately in more ways than one for Torry.
post. But it didn’t take too long before we cheered the appearance of leading scorer Lewis, who joined the fray at the expense of Javi Salvas on 55 mins.
Crevillente Deportivo...3 CD Torrevieja ...............0 As the winds then began to pick up Ruben Suarez brought another good save out of Oscar on the quarter hour but a mistake by the normally reliable centre back Quintero then let in Jaime Jornet. Finding himself in a similar position to the opener, he extended Crevillente’s lead with a swirling shot that looped over the head of Torrevieja’s keeper Miguel to nestle in the bottom corner. The visitors continued to push forward in search of a goal and Oscar was again well placed to turn a shot from Vicente just over the bar. It could then have got much worse for Pedreño’s men as Jesus steered the ball past Miguel only to be pulled back for offside. Three would have seen the game over but while it remained at 0-2 the men in yellow still lived in hope.
After an early Lewis effort was smothered by Oscar the striker was still settling into his game when he then saw his side go further behind through Jesus Planelles following a fine assist from Jaime. More Torry changes saw Carrasco and Chupe replace Prieto and Hijo on 68 mins but the new arrivals made little impact on the game. There was another Lewis effort that hit the bar in the final minutes but on a day when the hosts were dominant Pedreño will know that there is still a lot of work to do if his side are to make any real impact in this division. The win sees Crevillente move up to 6th in Tercera but still 4 points away from 4th and the final play off place occupied by Villarreal C.
That was demonstrated twice more in the final minutes of the half as Vicente and Ruben Suarez both brought good saves out of Oscar.
For Torry however next weekend brings a chance to redeem themselves, once again on the road at near neighbours Orihuela, although with only 11 games of the season remaining the 9 point gap to the play offs might be just a little too much to expect. But a derby win next Sunday, ko 4.30pm, will allow us to live in hope.
Surprisingly there were no changes for the visitors as they got the second period underway, the first real action of which saw a shot from Rafa Gomez strike the Crevillente
I understand that the Torry Army will be laying on a coach, info on which is available fom either Pat Stewart or at the office in La Siesta.
Prieto shines for Torry in pulsating International friendly CD TORREVIEJA - 3 WSG WATTENS - 3 BY STEVE HIBBERD For the 2nd week running, manager Pedreno arranged an international friendly against good quality opposition at the superb facilities of Campoamor sports complex. Last Wednesday, WSG Wattens from Austria were the opponents, and gave Torry a valuable work out which must have pleased Pedreno for a number of reasons. Wattens are currently top of their country's 3rd division, which resumes mid March following a mid winter break, and tested

their opponents to the full. Returning from injury were Javi Selvas, Redondo and Chupe, all of which passed the test with flying colours. Also encouraging was striker Prieto's apparent return to form, having drawn a blank from his first 3 starts since joining his new club. After going down to a penalty conceded by Vicente, Torry led 3-1 after only 25 mins, courtesy of a Prieto hat trick of the finest order. Wassen reduced arrears before half time, then soon after the resumption scored a deserved equaliser, which is how the match finished.
