By Staff Reporter The real estate development company TM Grupo is to invest 100 million euro in developments on the Orihuela Costa over the next couple of years, creating 2,000 direct and 3,000 indirect jobs, all helping to boost one of the most up and coming areas on the southern Costa Blanca, and generating billions in additional revenue. The developer is set to construct between 600 and 700 new homes in the calle Pablo Picasso area of Playa Flamenca, between 2017 and 2019, creating what they are describing as the “Golden Mile” for mixed residential and tourist real estate, based on similar successful devel-

opments in the Marbella area, pitching the Costa Blanca as the number one location for investment in Spain, and specifically in the Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa areas, where property sales numbers still make the area the fourth most popular after Madrid, Barcelona and Costa Del Sol, but unquestionably number one for foreign investors with its internationally diverse population. The company, which was founded in Orihuela in 1969, is based in neighbouring Torrevieja and has developments in 16 countries around the globe. In Spain, they have major projects in Murcia, Almería and Mallorca, as well as Torrevieja and the surrounding area, and have also just secured the contract for developing two 25-floor tower blocks in Benidorm. However, despite this huge investment from the private sector, many feel that Orihuela Costa is still lacking in attention from local, regional and national governments. The emergency coordination centre is still nothing more than a skeleton, children are still being schooled in inferior conditions, local businesses are still seemingly ignored in favour of larger retailers, and a lot of the infrastructure is in urgent need of serious investment in order to repair roads, drainage and other key elements needed in such a blooming area. Although the investment in new property is crucial to the area, the additional strain that these 1,500 plus residents, many with vehicles and most with needs such as work, education and health, cannot be ignored as it is only a matter of time before the current failings are amplified by this added burden. too, but will also no doubt be of the opinion that the added tax investment that these homes will bring must be directly invested in the coast, as opposed to the current situation where the balance of taxable income is currently upset as the coast and where a third of the population brings in a half of all tax but receives little of the investment in return, in favour of the city of Orihuela and, in some cases, the smaller villages within the municipality. Paul Piccio Hernandez, head of the C.L.A.R.O. group said, “This is the proof that Orihuela Costa is indeed the economic motor for the whole of Orihuela but unfortunately the economic gains are only felt and redistributed in the city centre and some pedanias where the current politicians can get the "sure" votes, but in the meantime the coast will continue to suffer. This awful situation is being maintained just because many residents in the coast do not exercise their right to vote.

Alvarez seeks tourist grants after meeting with Generalitit

Following a conference organised by the Valencian Tourist Agency, and attended by the tourist authorities of many regional councils, including the city of Elche, the Orihuela Councillor for Tourism, Sofia Alvarez, announced that she has submitted a number of bids, for tourist projects along the Orihuela Costa and in Orihuela city.

ty ends on March 22 with the results expected to be released to successful municipalities before the summer.

The councillor submitted her proposals to the head of the Territorial Service Alicante, Juan Fabbri, and the Chairman of ??Tourism Competitiveness, José Luis Wagner at the meeting held on Thursday at the Maria Moliner library in Orihuela city.

In order to "further improve the standing of Orihuela on the tourist map, the capital of region", the city will also host regular meetings of the Valencian Agency of Tourism in the area with representatives of the 27 municipalities of the region of Vega Baja.

Alvarez said that she has applied for grants to improve the coastal promenade as well as the lighting of historic monuments in the city. She also requested better and improved signage in a number of different languages and a tactile information point as many of the tourists visiting Orihuela and the coast are foreigners. She said that the projects will "significantly improve and exploit tourist our resources" as well as ultimately attracting many more visitors to the area. ‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Bar rie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

The Language Key The past often beckons us to ask more searching questions and to apply more challenging thinking to unresolved questions. Advances in archaeological techniques, as well as scientific methods, continually surprise and encourage us to investigate further. One recent discovery in the Canary Islands has provided us with yet another opportunity to reconnect with our past. It has long been agreed that the first inhabitants of the Canary Islands came from North Africa, the Berbers. Language fragments, as well as genetic research, support this view, yet many mysteries remain. One such mystery is that although the main Canary Islands were inhabited at the time of the European conquest, the islanders had no knowledge of navigation. Historians continue to ask whether the original inhabitants of the Canary Islands, the Guanches, were brought to the islands by force, or whether they arrived from choice. ‘Guanches’ is the term generally used to refer to the original inhabitants of all the Canary Islands, although the term originally referred to only the natives of Tenerife. The name ‘Majo’ is the correct word to use when referring to the aboriginal inhabitants of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. These people lived in a ‘stone age’ state before the European conquest, with no knowledge of metals, although they made pottery, cultivated barley and kept goats, sheep and pigs. The ‘Majo’ fished and collected wild fruit and vegetables that they could find. They lived in caves or basic stone dwellings. Interestingly, the society was polygamous, with women often having three husbands, which was the consequence of killing female babies to limit the population

on an island with very limited resources. Recently, archaeologists have been investigating inscriptions on a cave wall on the slopes of Tindaya mountain in Fuerteventura, and these could help to translate the written language used by the Majo before the Spanish came to colonise during the 14th and 15th Centuries. Two alphabets have been identified by archaeologists that seem to represent members of a family as a tree, where one alphabet used is of Berber origin and the other has a Latin origin. A phrase is used in these inscriptions that identifies ‘son of Makuran’ and this appears to be the language of the inhabitants of the eastern islands of the Canaries where aboriginal Majo lived, and this language has been defined as a lost language of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. These early inhabitants tended to live in isolation from each other geographically in the eastern islands, and archaeologists believe that their language originated from 1st Century Libya and Rome. Inscriptions similar to those found recently have been found at Gholaia in Libya and in other sites in Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, but never before have the two alphabets been discovered and used in parallel. These archaeologists report that the panel discovered at the Cuchillete de Buenavista site has the wording ‘Timamasi Timamasir Avmakuran’ that is translated as ‘son of Makuran and Timamasi, daughter of Timamasi’ in the Latin Libyan version, but as ‘W-MKRN’ and translated as ‘aw makuran or son of Makuran’ in Berber Libyan. This panel may well be the Canarian equivalent of the ‘Rosetta Stone’, which could unlock many secrets of the ancient language of the eastern Canary Islands that disappeared many years ago. It is a valuable discovery that could assist in much the same way as the Rosetta Stone

helped to decipher ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics for the first time when it was discovered in 1799. MURA meet with San Fulgencio Mayor The chairman (Gilberto Diaz) and the secretary (George Scammell) of Marina Urbanisations Residents Association (MURA) met the Mayor (Carlos Ramirez) and Paulin Herrero of San Fulgencio council on the 26th February. It was the first meeting between the two (PP and MURA). MURA produced the statutes from Valencia to prove the legality of MURA. It indicated the reasons for the existence of the organisation, from there a range of topics, mainly drawn from the Open Meeting just 2 day's previously which was attended by residents of the urbanisation and recently reported in The Leader Concerns raised from that meeting were put to the Mayor and a brief summary of responses gained from the Mayor are detailed below. There were concerns that the council had failed to properly but more importantly spray in time to prevent the proliferation of mosquitoes and assurances were sought that this would be remedied in the future. This could not be given but MURA were told that the responsibility is with individual residents who experience problems with mosquitoes to phone the council offices on 966 794 201. The council will act upon the request. A plain clothes police officer will be patrolling the urbanisation empowered to issue fines for any irresponsible dog owner who allow their dog to foul foot paths and public area's and not clean up after their animal. Dog owners be warned! Street lighting was discussed and the Mayor stated there is no systematic "switching off" of street lights, despite the unpaid electricity bills, on the urbanisation. Should residents have street lights not working they should contact the council to get

the matter rectified. The problem of the bill boards/advertising boards was discussed and the Mayor conceded there was a problem and that he will introduce a bye law to regulate the number and permissions granted. Any infringement of this and the boards will be removed. Public Transport was discussed and it was promised a new 24 seater bus will run from the town of San Fulgencio and will make various drop off's/pick up's around the urbanisation before travelling onto La Marina Village for other connecting services. The route yet to be agreed. The bus will run from 08.00 to 14.00. The cost of the service is 5k euro's per month which the council (through the collected SUMA from the urbanisation) will provide a 50% subsidy. It is thought the journey price will be in the order of 1 euro per passenger. More will be announced on this later. This will be provided on a 3 month trial basis, if not used then it is likely it will be withdrawn. The community centre has been offered for activities for the children of the urbanisation. On a more contentious subject and possibly an even more curious response from the council was on the issue of pedestrian safety. The unsafe condition of the pavements was raised and the Mayor pointed out they have a Public Liability policy so should anyone sustain an injury as a result of the condition of the walk ways they should obtain a doctors report and submit it to the council! Security on the urbanisation is due to be discussed at a later date with the Chief of Police and MURA. Topics to discuss include the use of illegal vehicles, unsafe common area's, "over exuberunce" in

the evenings around the commercial area's. The Rock Concert will be held by Mercadona this year. The Mayor was asked to justify the 20% increase on the urbanisations SUMA bills for last year, the explanation seemed somewhat different to his previous statement, now claiming it had to do with "Revizion Catastro". The contractor working on the roads in Marina Oasis have been told some of the work is unsatisfactory and they have to remedy this at no extra cost. The Mayor stated it is his preference to rotate the location where the annual fiesta is held, the chosen sites are Consum Square, Plaza Sierra Castilla and Calle Amsterdam. If the local bar owners do not want the fiesta in their area then it will revert to Consum Square. A children's skate park is being designed and will be sited at the play area at the lower bar area opposite Consum Square. Concerns were raised about an unsafe and collapsing wall close to the childrens play area, the council will investigate and repair. The meeting lasted approx two hours and the Mayor concluded he is willing to work with MURA for the benefit of the residents of the urbanisation. He indicated the budget for San Fulgencio was, income 7,836,650.56 with outgoings of 8,337,650.00 A further meeting was proposed to follow up on other concerns/issues raised on the 24th February.

Residents of the urbanisation are encouraged to support MURA by joining the association. The membership cost is 5 euro's and is obtainable at the MURA offices at 107 Calle Madrid, La Marina. The office is open between 10.00 and 14.00 each Tuesday and Thursday. MURA can also be found on Face Book and soon will have their web site fully up and running (www.mura.org.es) A fund raising event is to be held on the 22nd March at 20.30 at the Sports Complex, La Marina.

Semana Santa in Orihuela Campoverde to celebrate This spectacular event involves many hundreds of local people and possesses a rich artistic heritage thanks to the figures created by sculptors of the statue of Salzillo. Once again. this is Easter week in Orihuela, the origins of which date back to the 16th century. Among the numerous events that take place there will be many highlights including the procession of "El Silencio", which takes place on Good Friday and will involve over 10,000 people. The procession passes through the old town, where the only sounds that can be heard are those of the penitents' footsteps, and where the dark night is illuminated by the lanterns of the participants. A chant dating from the 18th century –the "Canto de la Pasión"– dispels the stillness as Christ passes by. The procession on the morning of Easter Saturday, known as the "Caballero Cubierto" serves as a complete contrast, and is unique due to the papal bull that declares that only one person can wear a hat inside the church. This is an old tradition that still lives on to this day in Orihuela. Easter week is one of Spain's most heartfelt and deeply-rooted religious festivals. Its history and tradition go back many centuries, and commemorate the passion and death of Jesus Christ. The streets of many of Spain's cities, towns and villages are transformed into scenes of religious fervour and devotion, where grief and meditation are combined as Christ's death is relived. Music, art and colour come together in these magical processions –solemn parades in which throngs of people accompany the religious images on their route through the streets and they are an absolute ‘MUST’ to attend. Free transport will be provided to each of the major processions from the Orihuela Costa detail of which can be obtained from the Tourist Info Office or by emailing residentes@orihuela.es Do make sure that you reserve your seat in advance. A program of events in Spanish can be found at www.semanasantaorihuela.com

Easter with historic parade

The residents of Campoverde are set to celebrate a historic first this Easter when all the local Cofradias (Semana Santa brotherhoods) parade their standards through the village accompanied by the Cofradia de la Convocatoria carrying their Paso. The expat Paso is traditionally carried by members mainly from the village of Campoverde. This first for the village was achieved after Campoverde Church wrote to Mari Carmen the head of the Junta Mayor De Cofradias asking whether it would be possible to arrange for the Paso to be paraded through the village to the Church. Maggie Dew from Campoverde Church said, “We were delighted and excited when Mari Carmen not only said yes, but also offered to bring all of the local Cofradia standards, a full band and an accompanying police escort”. Ray Marsh the local expat leader of the Cofradia in Campoverde said, “We are always proud that as expats we are allowed to take part in this most Spanish of ceremonies, but now we are pleased to have the opportunity to parade through our home village for the first time”. The parade will take place on Monday 21st March and will leave Plaza Florida in the centre of the village at 6.30pm, before processing along the Main Street, Ave del Pino, to Campoverde Church. The parade will be met in the Church garden by Father Robert Donkin who will bless the Paso and all the members of the Cofradias. Afterwards refreshments will be served in the garden for everyone. Porterhouse v Ale House 7-5 It was a slow start for this match with some very low scores from both sides (even the scorer had to write very small to get all of the scores on the board)! Warren Harris took the first game with a well deserved D4 finish. In the next game, Brian Nash scored 140 and 97 but it didn't help because even though both sides were on their doubles, Alan Havelock put in a great finish needing 48 and scoring T16/D4. More unlucky darts, Brian Nash scoring 100 and 98 and Ray Sanderson 97 but still the Ale House won the game with Alan Havelock finishing on D4 again - that was 3 D4's finishes in 3 games for the Ale House. There were some great scores from the Ale House particularly Karl (140/100), Andre (2 x 100), Andrew (100) and Bernie (100). Even though Porters secured the next 2 games with Sid finishing on D8 and Ray Hayes scoring 100/125 and finishing on D15 the Porters were 4-2 down at half time and were getting despondent. However, then came the well renowned Porterhouse sausages and revitalised the team especially Peter Ayres and Graham Todd who said it was hard to play when they hadn't had their sausages and the singles games were a different story. Yvonne was first in the firing line and was on her double and nearly got it but the dart fell to the floor and Ian came in quickly and took the match with D9. The rest of the singles all went to the Porters with some high scores. Graham scoring 3 x 95 in his game and finishing on D4 and Peter finishing on 59 (19/D20). Ray Hayes and Sid all performed to their usual high standard both scoring 100 with Brian scoring 146 and finishing on D4. This was certainly a game of two halves - and all thanks to the sausages! Report – Sue Sanderson. The Hub Hellraisers – The Tavern 2-10 Having travelled miles to play us (next door but one) The Tavern lads arrived at the Hub ready for a loud and fun filled night and they got one ! T3 kicked off with the warm up act for the Hellraisers Val, Sarah and Liz v Ian, Stuart and Bob for the Tavern, good darts. The game taken by Ian of the Tavern on D7. T2 Had Hellraisers “Super Sue”, “Ali-Pally” and “Joy to the World” v Paul, John and Rich from the Tavern, some nice scores with Super Sues first 3 darts scoring a 92, shortly followed by a nice 95. To be topped by the Hellraisers highest scorer for the night Alison with an impressive 103, nice darts Ali. Paul took the game for the Tavern with D1. T3 Saw El Capitan

Cheryl, Lesley and Clare for the Hellraisers v Zach, Ian and Bob for the Tavern. Our Cheryl was on top form with tidy scores of 93 and 80 with the game being taken by Ian for the Tavern on a nifty D14. Doubles matches saw Hellraisers Amanda and Alison v Zach and Kaye, with Kaye taking the game with an impressive D17. Now to the shock of the season, Hellriasers “One Dart Val” and our “Queenie”, Elizabeth v Bob and Ian of the Tavern. Good darts from all with Val actually getting all three darts on the board for the majority of the match, shocking enough but ... the real shock of the night and the season was “One Dart Val” throwing the winning dart! and taking the game on D6. The roof came off of course, it only takes one dart, Val ! Final Double was taken by Stuart of the Tavern after throwing a nice 100 and winning on D12. Grub was served, thank you Cheryl, outstanding yet again. Singles matches saw lots of high scores from Hellraisers Cheryl , Clare, Super Sue with the prize of the night going to Rich of the Taven with a cracking 126. S1 saw Ian take the game for the Tavern on D10, next game was taken by Zach of the Tavern on a D1, Third singles game was won by Hellraiser Clare on a tidy D4, nice darts chica. S5 was a close game to be taken by Rich of the Tavern on D7, final game of the night again was taken by the Tavern with John on D4. Another great fun filled night at The Hub, thanks to Simon and Cam for their hospitality and venue. Thanks to The Tavern boys for travelling so far to play us. Hats off to El Capitan Cheryl for the amazing food and a shout out to our biggest fan Dave, we said we would mention you! Report – Sarah the Hellraiser Evolution v Tradewinds Pirates 3-9 A short trip to Evolution with the Tradewinds Pirates looking to maintain their lead at the top of league 2. The triples started well, Harvey, 94 and Michelle Lane, 100 with Eddie Hirst 96 & 98 before Harvey finished on 56 (14, 10, D16). Next match John Lane, Gilly Kirby and Mike Snow faced a team including Mike Smith who hit 2 x100 but the Pirates won after a close game with Mike Snow D5. The final triples pitched the first game Tradewinds team Michelle, Harvey and Eddie against a team including Mike Smith who hit the top score of the night, 140 but couldn't stop the Pirates going 3-0 up with Harvey again finishing on 40 (20, 10, D5). The doubles turned in Evolution's favour with the first going to Jak 100 and D16 and Steph against Gilly,87 and Harvey 92. Next Mike and John 100 D6 beat John Lane and Mike despite John's equalling top score of 140, 3-2 and a tight game developing. The final doubles saw Eddie and Michelle 91 win against Dan 80 and Nikki 82, Eddie finishing on D1. After an excellent curry, the singles started with John Lane, 82, 81, 101 against Jon 85, 95. Good scoring from both ensured an exciting match with John taking the Pirates to 5-2 on D1. Next Snowy against Steph with the Pirate finishing on 32, 16, D8. Harvey against Jak next up with Harvey 95 looking for the win to ensure the 2 points for the Pirates. Despite having a clear lead it came down to both D1 and after 10 attempts Harvey hit it. Next Eddie against John with Eddie finishing well on 42 (18,6,D9). Michelle against Mike Smith in the penultimate match saw Mike win Evolution's only match in the singles, finishing on D1. Captain Gilly finished the match against Dan and after 87 won on 47 (17, D15), final score 9-3. Man of the match for the Pirates Harvey with his 3 finishes although Mum Michelle not far behind after her consistent scoring all evening. Report – Terry Kirby Breakaways v Pint Depot Kings 10-2 In the first of the triples K Hickman hit a ton and the response from G Cahill was a 104 & 132 but P Waller checked out on 83 3-DTop – D top in the second M Cummins hit 100 the reply from I Jones was 135 and R Chadwick checking out on D8.No high scores in the third but K Hickman checking out on 52 20 - D16. K Hickman was at it again with another 100 and checking out on 32 16 - 8 - D4. Onto the second double PD Kings won this J Crooks checking out on D7. A tit for tat game with no high scores but M Hastings taking it with 26 finish D8 - D5. J Crooks with a 123 and a D10 finish won the first of the singles, P Waller 100 and a D4 checkout ensuring that Breakaways would share the points. I Jones with a D6 finish sealed

By Gilly Kirby

the points. M Douglas with a 74 checkout 14 - 20 - DTop sealed his singles win. The last two singles did not produce any high scores Breakaways taking both games with a D2 M Hastings and D2 R Chadwick. A good night with the guys from PD Kings. Report - Breakaways Steve Junction Jaguars v Hen’s Teeth 8-4 Well the ladies were in fine form against the ‘Chicken’s Choppers’, who were on equal points to us in the league. Patty Poo (98), Wendy Woo and Hildy-Do-Da (60) took the first triple from Hobbs, Hassal and a high-scoring Chisholm (140) when Wendy clinched it with a D7 finish. Captain McKay, Levi Lynn (89) and Stoker simply couldn’t match the incredible scoring of Juicy Jevons 140, 138, 108, Todd and dastardly de Lacy (117, D1) in the 2nd Triple and then Jevons was at it again in the 3 triple with a 125 and Simpson getting the finish with an 89 and D1 over Hen’s Winnie, Ruth and Evie. Perky Poo (87, 65) and winsome Woo (73, 77, D5) brought home the first pairs game against a high scoring Winnie 81, 84, 100 and partner Evie. Wey Heh, the Jaguars were on fire with a 4:0 score line but then Hen’s started to peck back. Chisholm and McKay (85, 60, 61, D5) saw off the efforts of Ivill (74) and Wilkinson and then Hassal (84) and Stoker (116, D1) got the second point from de Lacy and Jevons who was still scoring like a gooden’ (66, 81, 92). After Landlady Lisa’s lovely Chicken in Mustard sauce (touch on cannibalism for our opponents??) the plucky poultry went on to take the first singles when Chisholm (60, 81,60, 61, D16) beat Wendy (90) and then Stoker (60, 120, D5) eventually got his finish before Todd (65, 70, 62, 84) could find hers. With the score at 4 apiece it was all to play for when Winnie met Poo! Despite Winnie’s fine scoring (76, 70) she succumbed to Poo’s (81, 81, 107, D16) masterful command of the board which put the Jaguars in the lead again. Captain de Lacy (60, 85, D2) nailed it against Captain McKay to bring us to 6 points and at least a draw. Saucy Simpson’s D1 got us the win and then star player of the night, Cnythia Jevons, put the icing on the cake with 85, 60, S11-D20 despite Mr Hassal scoring a not so poultry 118. So that really put the cats amongst the chickens! Well done ladies and commiseration to our feathered friends. Report - Simone de Lacy Pint Depot Queens v Sporting Life Misfits 4-8 The Queens took the first two triples with Maria Cummins first on 10 x10. Rachele Broadhead following on 121 ably assisted by team Queens Lorraine Cox 84, Broadhead 84, Debbie Wright 98 & 73. Misfits rose to the challenge thanks to Hunt and Cooper D2. Sonia and Leah followed suit with Lead levelling the score. After half time Sporting Life took the first 3 singles thanks to Leah , Dick and Ron. Queen Rachele stepped up to the mark to get the last with for the ladies 5x5. Then a close finish for Karl Cooper as he faced the dark horse Lynn Fozzard who’s known for her surprise high scores, Cooper wasn’t rattled as he scored a 140 and the Misfits last leg of the night. El Capitan v Hub Hyenas 7-5 The two top teams of the league met at El Capitan to battle out the top place as the league draws to a close in the coming weeks. Hubs Eyre, Spicer and Hawkins took the first triple with Spicer x20 and some top scores from Eyre and Spicer 140, Hawkins 100, 125. Capitan’s Aroldas and Rotella both threw 100. With Monday’s fixture between our own Pintos and Broncos having been played earlier in the year, for ethical reasons, we have had an easy week prior to The Mustangs travelling to Country Bowls to play our final game of the league against their Geckos on Friday. It proved to be a very friendly affair as expected and even the cold wind weakened allowing the sun to give a warm finish. The Geckos proved too strong, with the home advantage, but both teams played well and there were some excellent matches in great company. We came away with just the one rink, but play was closer than the score line might indicate and we certainly enjoyed the occasion. Sheila Cooper, Malc Sykes and Carolyn Harris 6-22. Irene Thomson, Jim Gracie and Eddie Thomson 16-15. Malc Elmore, Dave Haynes and Richard Lee 14-27. Barbara Jones, Keith Cunningham and Geoff Jones 5-40. All teams were presented with a trophy to mark the occasion with the KEITH WIGHTMAN Memorial Trophy going to the winners.

We all gathered on the Tuesday morning for the first ever Oldies v Youngsters competition, or should i unkindly say oldies v not quite has old. After a wonderful breakfast we set off for La Torre on what promised to be a wonderful day for golf. On arrival we were met with sunshine but a very cold northerly wind which meant having to wear jackets etc, but it stayed dry which is the most important. The draw was made the previous evening so the members knew whom they were playing and for which side, which gave cause for great banter on whom was classed has an oldie or a youngster. The cut off point being about 67 years young. The match was played as a two ball pairs matchplay Ryder cup style challenge match with full handicap. In the end the challenge was tied 3 matches each, thus the inaugural oldies v youngsters challenge match was unwon and awaits the first winner next year. The results were has follows: Fred Noakes (O) lost 2&1 to Stuart Robertson (Y), Andy Shuttle (O) lost 4 & 3 to Mike Bastow (Y), Frank (O) lost 5&4 to Jim Cooper (O), Pete Curly (O) won 6&5 over Trevor Rollison (Y), Peter Whitaker (O) won 3&1 over Simon Sharples (Y) and Ron Young (O) won 2&1 over Nigel Cawthra (Y). NTP,s went to Peter Whitaker on the 3rd and 5th, Nigel Cawthra on the 9th and Jim Cooper on the 11th. Unfortantely the report from the last society day was unpublished but the full report can be read on the golf society web page within the website. www.orangetree-caboroig.com The next society event is on Tuesday 22nd March at Hacienda de Riquelme. Members and guests are most welcome and your name can be either placed on the start sheet within the restaurant or by emailing us on orangetree@hotmail.es. We meet the evening prior (Monday 21st) between 5pm and 6pm to pay green fees, know the competition and do the draw.

This was discussed at the AGM and in addition, the information was given at the Captains Meeting prior to the commencement of the League. If we have record entries like we did with the Pairs, then no one wants to be playing the Final at 02.00a.m. in the morning! Therefore, Buscavidas in Los Montesinos have agreed to sponsor the Trophies for this event, because their venue is being used. They do not have a Ladies team in our League, but they do have plenty of room, and four Dartboards, added to the fact that we will be providing two Stand-alone dartboards for next year’s event, allowing plenty of room for the growth of our League. So, the Ladies Singles will be held on Tuesday 29th March; at Buscavidas in Los Montesinos. Registration is at 19.45 hours with a start time of 20.00 hours. The Raffle is being organized by El Balcon Chicas and the Primadonnas. An Entry Form is being distributed (included on facebook too), and you are kindly asked to return your entries by Wednesday 23rd March 2016. One late entry per team will be allowed on the night itself. Once again, well done to everyone, keep up the good work, and enjoy your darts. Torry welcomed 3rd place Elche Ilicitano to the Vicente Garcia stadium, knowing full well that, if they were to stop the rot, a vast improvement was required from the last 2 totally inadequate performances. Manager Pedreño could not call upon injured Martin and suspended Matej, but was hopeful of club captain Jorge making a much awaited return from injury, as well as the added incentive for Lewis who was playing against his former club. Torry currently lie in 12th place, some 14 points behind their visitors, needing to win virtually every remaining match if a play of slot is to be achieved. Elche meanwhile, were looking to cement a quick return to div 2b, and under manager Vicente Parra, they are proving extremely hard to beat. Nuha is top scorer on 18 goals, whilst within their ranks are ex Torry players Ruben, Juanra and more recently Brani. In the game itself Torry put on a gilt-edged first half display and were in front as early as the 6th minute when Quintero’s crisp shot put them 1-0 following a Rafa free kick. And they really should have added to their tally with regular opportunities falling throughout the opening 45. Lewis was eager to impress but his control let him down, either pushing the ball a

time team talk by Vicente Parra, there is only one reason why they sit in such a lofty divisional position, because they are better than most of the rest.

CD Torrevieja ...............4 Elche Illicitano..............2 touch too far or simply letting it run away and into the welcoming arms of Juanma, when he was through on goal. After a period just a few short weeks ago when the young striker could do no wrong he now seems to have been abandoned by the ‘goal gods’ as he is now beginning to suffer from a lack of goals. But despite the barren run Lewis refuses to let it get him down. Elche has just the one effort in the opening 45, a shot that came back off the crossbar from Maxi and with both Lewis Carlos and Higon also going close early on it took an alert Juanjo in the Elche goal to ensure that as the Torrevejense left the field at the interval they were only a single goal to the good. With the visitors down to ten men following a double yellow by Kana, Torry supporters could have been forgiven for thinking that the points were in the bag, but as the visitors were to prove after a rather vocal half

And with two goals in 4 second half minutes, from Nuha and substitute Rubio they very quickly turned the game on its head. Torry were shellshocked and many lesser teams would have capitulated having suffered such a setback but manager Pedreño was leading from the dugout as he made sure that his charges worked hard as they began to chase the game. And with just 10 minutes remaining it was a beauty from Rafa Gomez that got the blue and whites back on level terms as he ran with a loose ball before unleashing a screamer to lift the Torry heads, ironically during Elche’s best spell of the game. After that there was no stopping the home side with Suarez knocking in from close range and then Prieto bending a free kick around the Elche wall in the last few seconds of the game. By far the best game we have seen at the stadium this season and one that we hope Torry can now build on as they travel to Castellon, another difficult game, next weekend.
