By Staff Reporter Unions representing medical workers have denounced the health department and the Torrevieja hospital for failing to provide adequate cover during one of the busiest times of the year, Easter week. In a combined statement, the CC.OO, UGT, Usae and Cemsatse unions say that they warned the department before Easter of a pending state of collapse in the service, but no action was taken to increase front-line or administrative staff, resulting in some patients waiting up to 48 hours for admission.

Moreover, the hospital were dealing with eleven patients who had to be cared for in isolation, although six of them were only protected by curtains, and two of those were showing signs and symptoms of flu, thus risking transmission to other patients. The unions are demanding the reopening of recently closed intensive care units and the provision of the staff necessary to cover these areas and the hospital in general, as all roles in the hospital are working over capacity, including doctors, nurses, support and administration staff and even in the local store rooms where the logistic division responsible for the provision of supplies is unable to cope with demand.

Paul was the eldest of four brothers. He was the boss. He was married to Lynda for very nearly 40 years and the father of two children, Mark and Emma, of whom he was very proud. As his career developed he became a director of a shipping company and this enabled him and Lynda to purchase the property in Cabo Roig. Lynda decided to retire which Paul was pleased about although he didn’t realise is that she was retiring to live in Spain and wouldn’t be making his tea…… But they loved it. He would fly out every weekend and his holidays were always in Spain Every Christmas Paul would tell us that he was retiring in 5 years – it was a rolling 5 years but it eventually arrived and a it was well deserved one. Of course when he arrived in Spain on a permanent basis he was then able to follow his hobbies of jet skiing, sailing and flying and of course latterly he became an entrepreneur of Openbox Television systems which he fitted into many private properties as well as a lot of local bars and restaurants. And as all the recipients knew .... nobody could fault his customer service as he would literally interrupt whatever he was doing, often whilst out eating a meal, to rush off and fix someone’s box. Paul enjoyed immensely the last 5 years of his life being very much part of the local community as the odd job man, the pool attendant and the TV and Internet technician. He made some very special friends here and this is where he would have loved to spend the rest of life. It’s such a shame it was cut so short.

Elderly British Woman injured after Cala Mosca Fall

First on the scene were the Policia Local n elderly woman, believed to be of British origin and in her late seventies, was rescued by the emergency services having fallen down the embankment at Cala Mosca on the Orihuela Costa on Wednesday.

A

The grossly overstretched and hugely under resourced local police were once again first on the scene but due to the complexity of the location and the injuries suffered they called on the fire service and emergency medics to assist. The fire service attended shortly afterwards, but in a situation that has almost become the unacceptable norm, it took the ambulance around half an hour to attend. There is no doubt that if the long-awaited Emergency Coordination Centre was complete then the response to this incident would have been faster and better resourced, the victim this time lucky enough to escape with her life.

Cala Mosca is a rough, cliff-lined area with mostly inaccessible beaches which are therefore not classified as suitable for bathing. Despite this, the area is very popular with many visitors and residents looking for secluded areas, despite the treacherous access and egress routes. The security of the upper land has been further compromised in recent years by motorists ignoring the now parking and no entry or access restrictions, many of who had even removed boulders which had been placed to prevent vehicular access. The land adjacent to the site has also been under dispute for some years as it is environmentally protected, but permission was granted to build a residential complex on the land, a plan which was halted by petitions over the delicate environment which houses endangered species.

PARISH DAY FEAST IN ORIHUELA COSTA Easter Monday, the 28th March, saw the Parish of the Risen Christ in Orihuela Costa celebrating a very important event – their Parish Day Feast. The Resurrection of the Lord is the most important event in religious live of every Christian but in this community the day is especially significant because of the name of the Parish. But this year it was actually a triple celebration due to the fourth anniversary of the Ecumenical Centre – the main Chapel of the parish, located in Diamante Street nº7. During the celebration of Holy Mass, directed by the Parish Priest, Father Joaquin Carlos, he dedicated a part of his sermon to explain the meaning of the modern Altar mural (Retablo), the work of church architect and artist Mr. Angel Gambin. The Retablo has been recently blessed by the Bishop of Dioceses Orihuela Alicante, Msr. Jesús Murgui Soriano during his Pastoral Visit at the end of February; his first Pastoral visit in this young parish. The special guests participating in the liturgy were the professional musicians from the music school Conservatorio de Maestro Casanova and Unión Musical Torrevejense: Mr. José A. García – Baritone Saxophone, Mr. Francisco J. Garres – Clarinet, Mrs. Nataliya Khomyak - Piano and the Quartet of voices “Cantus Colorus”: Ms. Uliana, Mr. Taras, Mr. Orest Khomyak and Mrs. Viktoryia Svyshch. They played and sang the following pieces: Aria - Bach, Gloria, Ave María - Caccini, Panis Angelicus, Serenata - Schubert, Agnus Dei, Ave Verum, Ave María - Gounod. Father Joaquin Carlos said he was also very pleased to welcome a representative of the Orihuela Costa Town Hall, Fermín González Rodríguez.

After the Mass there was a reception consisting of a brotherhood meal with barbeque and delicious homemade desserts. The celebration was concluded with a raffle and bingo. On behalf of the Parish of the Risen Christ we would like to thank everyone who helped to make our day so memorable and enjoyable.

The Bowen Technique - Treatment with Body Harmony The Bowen Technique was pioneered by Thomas Bowen, born in Geelong, Australia. After working in miscellaneous labouring jobs as a young man, he developed a great interest in massage and body work and spent time observing football trainers and others involved with sports. By the time he was in his early 40´s, this gifted man had established a full time practice in remedial therapy using the technique he developed. It is amazing at the effectiveness of this simple and gentle “hands-on” therapy. The Bowen Technique is suitable for everyone, from the tiniest of babies, to athletes and frailest of adults. It looks at restoring balance to the body by a series of very gentle rolling type moves made with the therapist´s fingers and thumbs over precise areas of the body. A unique feature of the Bowen Treatment is that after a series of set moves, the therapist leaves the room for a couple of minutes. This prompts the body to reset, repair and rebalance itself. The Bowen Technique does not rely on hard pressure, it is a very light touch therapy and there is no twisting, bending or awkward repositioning of the client during the treatment. It can be performed through light clothing. A key element of the Bowen Technique so that we work holistically and do not treat a specific condition but look at the person as a whole. WHAT CAN BOWEN SAFELY TREAT. Common presenting problems include back and neck pain, knee problems, sports injuries, RSI, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow and respiratory problems. Conditions such as chronic fatigue, hayfever, headache, kidney problems and problems requiring lymphatic

not receiving other physical therapies whilst being treated with the Bowen Technique. If tou feel that the BOWEN TECHNIQUE is actually what you need right now and would like further info or to book an approintment, then please contact Christine Quinlan at BODY HARMONY. The telephone number is 966 795 103. Email address is...bodyharmony@tinyworld.co.uk..and website is..bodyharmonytherapies.co.uk. BODY HARMONY IS BASED IN LA MARINA drainage have responded favourably to Bowen Technique. Some people use the Bowen Technique as a means of stress management and health maintenance, seeing their therapists regularly 2-4 times a year. The Bowen Technique also addresses many other conditions and it is regarded as safe and effective for people of all ages. THE ACTUAL BOWEN TREATMENT With Bowen Technique, I am happy to work either directly onto skin or through light clothing. The first session will consist of a consultation during which I take notes about you, your lifestyle, conduct any assessments required and then carry out the Bowen Therapy. Treatments are normally about an hour. Every person is unique and therefore treatments and times are tailored to the individual. An initial course of three treatments is recommended to see how the client responds to treatment, usually at weekly intervals. Some clients will experience instant pain relief, whereas with others the body may respond over the next few days, but normally even chronic conditions will see relief with an initial set of three treatments. It is recommended that clients are

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

THE BOOZE CRUISE Over the last two years there has been a worrying increase in the number of passengers, using various airlines, creating a major disturbance on planes flying to the Canary Islands, as well as on other routes to Spain’s sunshine holiday destinations. The most common issue is excessive consumption of alcohol before and during the flight, leading to a number of major incidents. In some cases, offending passengers have had to be restrained during the flight, whilst others have forced pilots to seek a premature landing at another airport, involving delays, inconvenience, distress and increased expenses for the airline and other passengers. Neither is this an entirely British condition, since I am also aware of several Scandinavian airlines that have had similar problems in recent months. There are now pleasing signs that some airlines are toughening up on their policy towards offending passengers, yet the issue seems to be getting worse. In most cases, these passengers are arrested, fined and often banned from flying on commercial airlines for a number of years. This is to be welcomed, but the penalties are currently clearly not high enough, and I remain unconvinced that the problem is being dealt with effectively and aggressively at source. Flying is not a pleasurable experience for most people, and many holidaymakers like to have an alcoholic drink to help them relax before they take to the skies. Flights can also be incredibly boring, unless engrossed in a good book, watching a thrilling film on a personal tablet, or able to sleep for a few hours. On-board snacks and drinks do help to relieve some of the boredom. The problem appears to be that

some of the cheaper carriers are so desperate to promote their sales of booze and food on board to increase their profit margins, but forget that this actually affects passengers in a way that could create devastating circumstances for the entire flight. I recall a flight that I took from the UK to Gran Canaria some months ago with a low cost airline; it was an experience that I will never forget, and for all the wrong reasons. The troubles began as soon as a group of wildly excited young men boarded the flight, clearly intoxicated and in the party mood at ten o’clock in the morning. Whether they were intoxicated with booze or drugs, I cannot be certain, but it did not take an expert to recognise that these passengers should never have been allowed to board the plane. The problems were compounded by the airline’s trolley service, which continually plied its trade up and down the aisles every 30 minutes or so on the four-hour flight. The group of young men were sold beers and spirits in abundance leading to even more riotous, noisy and foul mouthed behaviour. Instead of refusing them more alcohol, they were encouraged to drink more, and I lost count of the number of fifty-pound notes that changed hands on the flight. This group of young men were clearly good customers and would no doubt considerably boost the airline’s profit and the cabin crew’s commissions. Meanwhile, myself and other passengers were suffering from the actions of this group of thoughtless partygoers. As well as noisy, foul mouthed, riotous behaviour, we were sprayed and showered with the remaining dregs inside cans of beers, gins and tonics, although the cabin crew were kind enough to offer us moist tissues to mop ourselves with.

By Bar rie Mahoney Finally, one member of the group vomited, partly into a paper bag, with the remainder hitting a passenger seated in the next aisle. We all had to endue the foul stench for the remainder of the journey. As well as passengers taking greater responsibility for themselves and their own behaviour, airlines and airports clearly need to monitor those attempting to board aircraft in an intoxicated state. As well as enhanced security measures, airlines and airports should adopt a more responsible approach to sales of alcohol on flights. I also question whether it is really necessary to serve alcohol in airports and on aircraft anyway, other than to boost profits? I guess that is my answer; without selling alcohol, ticket prices would rise. After my experience, this is certainly my preferred option. HOW TO NEGOTIATE ROUNDABOUTS If you are unsure about the correct way to negotiate roundabouts, here are some simple rules to help you enter and exit roundabouts safely and in the right lane.

APPROACHING ROUNDABOUTS It’s important to remember to give way to traffic already on the roundabout. If the roundabout is outside urban areas of towns or cities, keep right. If the roundabout is in a built-up area inside a town or city and the lanes are clearly marked, you should use the lane that best corresponds to the exit you need to take.

LEAVING ROUNDABOUTS This causes the most confusion amongst drivers. Which lane to choose? Why do I get beeped at if I’m in the right lane? Drivers must exit roundabouts from the right hand lane, because the only way to leave the roundabout is by turning right. This does-

n’t mean we always have to enter the roundabout from the right hand lane. It depends on the exit we need to take. However this simple rule, in practice, can be more complex. Let us see some examples. 1st EXIT RIGHT Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate and exit roundabout. CONTINUING STRAIGHT ON (e.g. 2nd EXIT STRAIGHT AHEAD) Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate prior to exit and leave roundabout. TURNING LEFT OR CHANGING DIRECTION (e.g. 3rd OR FINAL EXIT) Enter roundabout keeping to left hand side lane. Stay in lane until you have passed the exit before your turn off, then change lane by indicating right and giving other road users sufficient time to anticipate your manoeuvre. Don’t forget that drivers circulating in the outside lanes have priority, so use your mirrors to ensure you are not blocking them as you change lanes.

We hope the information provided in this article is of interest to you.

Sincere thanks as usual, must go to all those who kindly marked games, above and beyond the call of duty, without which this competition would not run quite so smoothly. Personal thanks to Jackie Tomkinson for her help during the evening too, along with more thanks to Tracey Simpson and Elaine Willis for their work keeping account of the Hot Darts for the evening. Once again, keep up the good work everyone, and enjoy your darts. Pam Horton. 96 571 0066. Ladies Darts Coordinator. Email: Dartess501@gmail.com

The men's final saw Andy of the Jackals against Merv of Massey's.

I would like to thank all the contestants who participated in the competition's and for a very enjoyable night last Thursday I would like to thank the Tavern for their hospitality and the use of the venue. There was one other rearranged match played on Thursday night, it was the team KO quarter-final between Breakaways v Hens Teeth, this was a very close match although the score of 7-0 to the Breakaways is a very misleading impression. Despite some very close games I think the Breakaways must have been practising on their doubles as they just could not miss them, the win taking them into the semi-final in which they will be playing the Hub Hyenas.

Monday 4th April - Sunday 10th April, 2016

Another good week for San Luis teams, finally winning the big prize. We did it!! After all the effort and team work through the season, Wednesday's result has secured SL Orcas as Winter League winners with 2 matches to go and we've also won the Berleen League. Winter League Wednesday 30th March, SL Orcas home v Bonalba, had some unexpected results, including a fortuitous hot shot along the way, winning on all rinks; shots 120-64, 12pts-0. Winners: Neil Morrison, Jo Pering, June Jones, Keith Jones 31-9, Shirley Verity, Lynne Morris, Giuseppe Galelli, Tom Hill, 18-8, Ann Holland, Keith Phillips, Colin Lindgren, Sabrina Marks 24-15, Sheila Cammack, Angie Goodfellow, Julian Pering, Russell Marks 21-17, Kath Reid, Keith Roberts, Peter McEneany, Noel Verity 26-15. This puts us at the top of the league with 219 points, Quesada on 193, Javea Green on 193 (having played 1 extra match), BBC on 192, so we can't be beaten. Although there was no Berleen match this week, our team, on 24 points, has done enough already with 1 match to go. San Miguel and Quesada both have 2 matches to play but on 18 points they can only achieve a maximum of 22 points. SL Belugas were away v close rivals Greenlands (with just 1 point separating them) and this week beat 2 good teams + a draw for a well deserved 5pts-7, 72shots-92. Winners: Jean Parkes, John Moss, Ray Clarke, Paul Parkes 16-14, Chris Brooks, Bill Webb, Les Bedford, Dave Blackie 16-16, Irene Everett, Audrey Ford, Derrick Cooper, Barry Edwards 22-13. This leaves Belugas on 105 & Greenlands 106, so still points to play for with 2 matches to go. VC League, Friday 1st April. Unfortunately the joke was on us; SL Kestrels, on a beautiful bright sunny, blue day with very strong, gusty winds, where else would we want to be but El Rancho! The company was very pleasant and there were some close matches and some good bowling. Steve Simmons, after fighting all the way back, only just lost his singles match 1921, our rinks team; Scott Malden, Neil Morrison, Roy Cordell & Brian Pocock just lost by 2 shots, 14-16. But after all the hard work, unfortunately the points were 0-12, shots 73-98. Hopefully next time will be better.

Introduction to the MOBO Group

Have you ever looked at the sea on a lovely day and thought wouldn’t it be great to have a boat? Then you thought about the cost of purchase and the running costs and the maintenance involved and you rejected the idea. Well, MOBO group may have the answer for you. MOBO group is one of the boat share groups within the Sailing Association Mar Menor. SAMM is based at the Santa Cristina centre in Los Narejos on the Mar Menor and has several groups covering a range of boating activities. MOBO group owns ‘FEFI’ a 22ft Spanish built fishing boat (Artaban) which is moored on Santa Cristina’s secure pier. She has an inboard diesel engine, 2 forward cabins, and can carry up to 6 people.

The owner members share the running costs, the maintenance and, most importantly, the sailing. Generally we sail on the delightful Mar Menor, but sometimes venture through the La Manga canal to the Mediterranean. Entry and running cost are very reasonable and there are vacancies at present. If interested, you could ‘phone Mike at 678 145 674 to find out more and make a date to come down for a trial run. If you can’t get down sooner, SAMM has an open day on 11th May – put it in the diary now! See us on the SAMM website at www.sailingmarmenor.com To contact Mike by e-mail michael_phillips1@msn.com

Easter Tennis at Campoamor (golf)

By Steve Durie

The Easter tournament was organized for better standard players. Perfect weather greeted the 16 players when they arrived for the 3 hour tournament. All the players completed 40 games with different partners and opponents in a mixture of mixed and same sex matches. Many of the matches were very close, reflecting the higher club standard of all the players. On Friday 25 March, 24 members and 2 guests played the monthly Stableford game at our home course, La Marquesa. With ideal weather conditions and continuous improvements to the course, it was a perfect recipe for a good day’s golfing. Thus reflected in the scores that came in. The best guest was Matt Holland with 36 points. N.T.P’s went to: 5th Marilyn Eckersall, 11th Bev Fairhurst, 15th John Barraclough, 17th Malcolm Foskett. Best front with 20 pts John Barraclough

and best back nine Malcolm Foskett 19 pts. Three players tied with 35 points but after applying the count back rules Bob Shorley was third and in second place Jan Shorley. However, the outright winner with a resounding 40 points was John Hill. Presentations and refreshments were held at our home venue, the Olde 9th in Quesada. Our next game is scheduled for Friday 29 April, once again, at La Marquesa Golf Course.

VISUALISATION You may have heard of visualization and mental rehearsal and wonder just what it is but it’s simple to understand and will improve your game when you learn how to apply it. When you take any shot, be it a drive or a putt, you have to ask yourself to play a ‘particular’ shot but if you fail in the thought preparation before you play it is not difficult to see that the body cannot respond with the required shot. How often have you stood in a bunker and instead of thinking how to play the ball onto the green you only consider leaving the ball in the bunker? You then attempt to play the short with your automatic self having been instructed to fail, and failure is what you get. Mental rehearsal is the pre-shot preparation, which simply explains to your reliable automatic just what you expect of it and is also a way of filling your mind with positive thought. Perhaps we find the most important time for correct mental rehearsal in the short game where you spend far too much time reminding yourself of the many physical movements required to make the shot and fail to rehearse “what” you are trying to do. It is not so much “how” but “what” you are about to do and we have all been guilty of this sort of inadequate preparation Working out how to play any golf shot has one other requirement often over looked by the golfer because shot preparation must be governed by the knowledge of your personal capabilities and do not attempt to play shots outside of your ability because this type of negative rehearsal can only result in failure.

Another bad day at the office for Torry Mid table Torry visited 2nd to bottom Beniganim, still hungover from the previous weeks mauling, and it took them until late in the 1st half before they were able to shake it out of their system. But unfortunately, they were never able to recovery from 2 first half goals, even though they had the lions share of the second period. The hosts top scorer is none other than ex Torry front man Koeman, and a certain relief must have been felt when his name did not appear on the team sheet. Pedreno elected to make a number of changes, in an attempt to get his Torry side back to winning ways: Torry line up: Miguel, Quintero, Javi Selvas, Jorge, Vicente, Burguillos, Higon, Sanchez (Chupe), Carrasco (Suarez), Rafa (Prieto), Lewis

3 minutes of play.

UD Beniganim .............2 CD Torrevieja ...............0 Torry bossed the 2nd period from the off, having a purple patch early on. A trade mark cross shot from Vicente was followed by a shot by Lewis being saved, then Quintero suffered the same result, all within

On the hour mark, Lewis shot over the bar, only for Torry team mate Higon to force a brilliant save by Valero. Pedreno made a triple substitution on 65 mins, bringing on Chupe, Suarez and Prieto. Beniganim got back into the game when first Vano then Alfonso tested Miguel. Higon fed sub Prieto on 80 mins, but Valero saved with his legs. On 84 mins, a cross by Quintero was headed onto the bar by Lewis, then in stoppage time Burguillos shot wide. Next Sun 10 Apr, ko 5pm, Torry entertain lowly Bunol at Vicente Garcia Stadium, in an attempt to get back to winning ways.

Fageca severely tested Torry's recalled keeper Miguel in the 12th min, who was forced to make an important double save. Five mins later, a through ball by Palaci found Fageca, but with just Miguel to beat he shot tamely at Torry's custodian. Beniganim's first goal arrived on 23 mins, involving a well worked move by Fageca, Palaci, then Abrahams whose cross shot was too good for Miguel. Their 2nd goal also involved the dangerous Fageca, this time his assist found Alex Torrella who blasted home. Late in the half, a long ball to Lewis was cut out by keeper Valero, then Rafa missed a good opportunity, as Torry finished the half brightly.

The obvious way to success is to ‘ask’ for it, play the shot you wish to play, within your mind, and then without hesitation step up to the ball and play it.
