Orihuela to be split into eleven districts

Despite the wishes of people living on the Coast the politicians in Orihuela are about to divide the municipality into eleven neighbourhood districts with the final plans put to the monthly plenary last Thursday. Mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, said that "although the proposals are not agreed by 100% of the people they do have a high consensus of accord.” The vote was actually approved by the majority in plenary with the Partido Popular and Ciudadanos voting in favor and the PSOE and Foro Demócrata abstaining whilst Cambiemos voted against. As explained by the Cllr for

Citizens, Juan Ignacio LopezBas, the organisations will better channel citizens problems and proposals through their own district and municipal management body. Each Board will meet three times a year, but may decide to increase the frequency. They will consist of eleven members who will be elected "democratically" every four years in each district. The presidency of each body, however, will be a member of the municipal council who will be appointed by the mayor. Districts 1 to 4 will be firmed from within Orihuela city and it’s immediate surrounds. District five will be the rural villages of La Murada, Barbarroja and La Matanza while six be formed by La Aparecida, el Raiguero de Bonanza, de Levante and de Poniente Continued on Page 6

Ambassador urges Brits to have their say in EU referendum

More than 1000 expats per day in Spain are going online to the UK government webpage where Brits can register to vote in the EU referendum. The British Ambassador Simon Manley on Friday described the strong interest among British expats in voting in the referendum as ‘very encouraging’. Speaking in Malaga to partners of the British Consulate and local authority foreigners’ departments, who are helping to spread the voter registration message, Mr Manley said: “The Foreign Office is supporting the Electoral Commission’s campaign to encourage Brits overseas to register to vote, and I’m pleased that so many are already preparing to exercise their democratic right. “Whether your view is that the UK should remain in or leave the EU, I urge all eligible expats to register to vote in this historic referendum. It is for the British people to decide whether we’re stronger, safer and better off as part of the European Union, or on our own.” Clicks on the www.gov.uk/register-to-vote from computer users with Spanish IP addresses have averaged more than 1000 daily since the overseas voter registration campaign began on 4 February. Since the beginning of the year, a total of over 80,000 people in Spain have visited

www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. More than a quarter of a million Brits live in Spain and the large majority are thought to be eligible to vote. You must have been on the UK electoral roll within the last 15 years, or if you were under 18 when you left then at least one of your parents must have been on the electoral list. The deadline to register for an overseas postal vote is 16 May, in order for ballot papers to be sent out from 23 May in time for them to arrive and for you to send them back. Simply visit www.gov.uk/register-to-vote with your passport, National Insurance number and last UK postcode. The process takes just 5 minutes. If you do miss the deadline, you can still apply for a proxy vote. Even if you registered as an overseas voter for the General Election last year, you do need to do it again. That’s because - just as in the UK - you must register every year in order to vote in UK elections and referendums. You can find out more about voting at www.aboutmyvote.co.uk/frequently-asked-questions/overseasvoters. Expats who left the UK more than 15 years ago are unfortunately ineligible to vote, because legislation intended to remove the time limit cannot be passed before the referendum date.

Torrevieja May Fair THIS WEEK Having just played host to a legion of Roman´s during last week´s event on the Vista Alegre, this week sees Torrevieja taken over by a more

traditional, albeit southern influenced fiesta, the Feria de Mayo, or May Fair.

the port area, all celebrating the Sevillana fiesta through music, dance, food and drink.

There will be almost thirty venues housed in the marquees in

Wednesday evening sees the inauguration of the fiesta, with traditional music and song on the stage, a dance spectacular, an appearance by the Ritmo del Sur group, and a large fireworks display. The entertainment continues on Thursday and Friday with more music and dance in the evening, and on Saturday the very popular parade of horses and carriages takes to the fair ground, as music and song continues throughout the day. The horses continue to parade on Sunday, with more music and dance, before the event closes at midnight. The centre of Torrevieja is likely to be busy for this event, although there are a number of car parks available within walking distance. The busiest times tend to be early afternoon and then into the evening, and so for a quieter experience, the traditional siesta time is always a favourite.

BEACH FOR DOGS BY SUMMER The local government of Torrevieja has modified bylaws to enable dogs on the beaches of the town. The government spokesperson, Fanny Serrano, reported that in a meeting on Friday that as part of their commitment to continue to “order and update” local legislation, they had approved the draft amendment of the beach laws so that an area where dogs are permitted can be created. Serrano explained all of the points from the meeting including the unanimous vote update the beach laws, described as the “first step” in creating a dog-friendly area where animals can enjoy the beach so long as they are accompanied by their owners and kept under control. It is hoped that following the agreement, the steps can now continue to allow for the creation of the

dog zone by meeting all of the legal requirement before this summer season.

Surgery waiting times to be reduced new regional government who took over following the elections last year.

The health department has published March figures relating to hospital waiting lists across the region of Valencia this week, revealing that the average waiting time for patients needing surgery is 115 days. Although the delay is still in the region of three months wait, this is the first that waiting times have actually been cut, as the last figures, recorded in January, showed an average wait of 120 days. The reduction is part of the commitment by the

The new Regional Health Minister, Carmen Montón of the socialist PSOE, has said that the government want to be transparent about hospital figures, and although they could have issued data which would suggest that waiting lists were half of the reality, it is their aim to eliminate “data manipulation” that had previously seen thousands of patients left off official lists. In terms of individual departmental procedures, the average waiting time is 91 days for cataracts for example, 97 for inguinal hernias, 109 for hip replacements, 124 for knee prosthesis, 108 for arthroscopy, 222 for varicose veins, and 75 for carpal tunnel syndrome, among others.

Continued From Page One El Camino de Beniel, Desamparados and Las Norias will make up area number seven and Hurchillo, Arneva and Torremendo district eight. District nine Will be formed by the pedanías of La Campaneta, Correntías and San Bartolomé while ten and eleven will be based on the Orihuela Costa. Lopez-Bas said that he hopes to have the eleven new District bodies fully operating by the end of the year He assured people that this will be one of the most comprehensive and direct methods of involvement by local residents that exist in Spain. Critics, however, say that the concept is one of a strategy that breaks up existing power structures in order to decrease the power that they are able to exert and that will certainly be the case on the Orihuela Costa where residents are already being denied their rights as we regularly see with the prolific expenditure in Orihuela City, so subdividing the authority into much smaller areas will make it far easier for the city based politicians to deny the coast what is rightfully theirs. In a recent cost cutting measure the post office stopped home postal deliveries to Campoamor, Cabo Roig, La Regia and La Zenia I and II. They said that they were not a single integrated urban entity with the required population to maintain a full postal service. With the further division of the Costa by the Partido Popular and minority Ciudadanos what hopes there were of re establishing that authority will now be even further diminished.

Alvarez promises better services Improvement to Coastal Services Councillor for Tourism, Sofia Alvarez said last week that she is to introduce a number of new projects on the coast which she hopes will improve the situation for many local residents. She said that she intends to address the problems that are regularly being encountered, particularly local cleanliness and security. One particular aspect is stagnant rainwater, particularly around La Zenia, Cabo Roig and Campoamor, for which she has asked Hidraqua to find a solution. In Los Pinos, municipal staff are being

employed on the removal of weeds, repairs to the fence and the refurbishment of street furniture. Additional works will also be carried out in a number of other green areas including pruning and improvements to the playgrounds in Aguamarina and La Regia and, following repair of the irrigation system, 13 palm trees will be replaced along the promenade of La Zenia and Cala Capitan. Alvarez said that she has also asked for an additional budget for the cleaning of the Aguamarina and La Caleta beaches.

Bascuñana asks for AVE stop in Orihuela

The mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, met Ana Pastor last week, the acting Minister of Development in the temporary National Government when she briefly stopped off at Orihuela’s Miguel Hernandez train station during her visit to the section of high speed rail works between Orihuela and Beniel. During their short meeting the mayor said that the city were extremely keen that, once the

high speed link is established between Murcia and Madrid, the Miguel Hernandez station in Orihuela be added to the list of stops. He said that this would be an extremely important advancement for the city which would lead to increased visitor numbers and tourism in the area. The link would reduce the travelling time between Orihuela and Madrid to just 2 hours.

Toxic Emissions made safe in Las Ramblas

View of waste tip covered by tons of earth and sand to seal of escape of toxic gases with Las Ramblas houses in background

T

Spokesperson for the Orihuela PSOE, Carolina Gracia, said last week that the Valencia Regional Government is once again about to release tender documents to potential constructors for completion of the outstanding works on the La Zenia Emergency Centre, situated adjacent to Consum supermarket.

o the great relief of residents of Las Ramblas, action has been take to seal of the emission of burning waste fumes which have constituted a serious health and environmental danger for many years. Action to cover the gas escape with tons of earth has been carried out by the new environment friendly government in Valencia. They were spurred to deal with the health hazard following complaints by local residents, spearheaded by the Las Ramblas Altamira Community and the Guardia Civil’s environmental protection arm (SEPRONA) after the Environment Protection Prosecutor put the matter before the Orihuela courts. In recent years the local residents were assisted by C.L.A.R.O. who enlisted the support of the influential action group VERTIVEGA who specialise in denouncing illegal waste tips. C.L.A.R.O initiated a number of Media campaigns, including coverage on a national Spanish television current affairs programme, which ensured that the authorities were obliged to take up the issue. Sealing the escape of toxic gases is the first step in a lengthy and costly process which will include removing the leakage of contaminated liquids penetrating the ground and endangering the water table and finally addressing the removal of the contents of the tip and restoring the area to its natural state.

WORK ON EMERGENCY CENTRE TO BE REVIVED

She said that she had been given the information at her recent meeting with Jose Maria Angel, the chief of the Valencia Emergency Planning department.

A Forum, initiated by C.L.A.R.O and the Las Ramblas Altamira Community, is now planned for the 17 June in the Las Ramblas golf club from 12 – 2 p.m. at which representatives from the regional government and VERTIVEGA will be in attendance; an invitation is also being sent to the owners of the land who are responsible for restoring the waste tip to legality and we hope they will also be able to attend.

It is anticipated that the tender documentation, to the value of almost 3 million euro, will be released prior to the coming summer with a centre completion date scheduled for the end of next year. When completed the centre will house the Guardia Civil, Policia Local, Civil Protection as well as Fire and Ambulance Services.

HOW TO NEGOTIATE ROUNDABOUTS If you are unsure about the correct way to negotiate roundabouts, here are some simple rules to help you enter and exit roundabouts safely and in the right lane.

APPROACHING ROUNDABOUTS It’s important to remember to give way to traffic already on the roundabout. If the roundabout is outside urban areas of towns or cities, keep right. If the roundabout is in a built-up area inside a town or city and the lanes are clearly marked, you should use the lane that best corresponds to the exit you need to take.

LEAVING ROUNDABOUTS This causes the most confusion amongst drivers. Which lane to choose? Why do I get beeped at if I’m in the right lane? Drivers must exit roundabouts from the right hand lane, because the only way to leave the roundabout is by turning right. This does-

n’t mean we always have to enter the roundabout from the right hand lane. It depends on the exit we need to take. However this simple rule, in practice, can be more complex. Let us see some examples. 1st EXIT RIGHT Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate and exit roundabout. CONTINUING STRAIGHT ON (e.g. 2nd EXIT STRAIGHT AHEAD) Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate prior to exit and leave roundabout. TURNING LEFT OR CHANGING DIRECTION (e.g. 3rd OR FINAL EXIT) Enter roundabout keeping to left hand side lane. Stay in lane until you have passed the exit before your turn off, then change lane by indicating right and giving other road users sufficient time to anticipate your manoeuvre. Don’t forget that drivers circulating in the outside lanes have priority, so use your mirrors to ensure you are not blocking them as you change lanes.

We hope the information provided in this article is of interest to you.

Another exciting race day for SAAM

With the closure of the jetty at CTD by the Spanish Costas, a change in the race management was forced upon SAMM. Their new Whaly support boat had to be used as a Committee Boat with a rib loaned by the Shoestring Group in the support role. Despite this, on Sunday April 24th, there were two exciting races in near perfect conditions. In the first 6 lap race the three Balaton Group boats ‘Conny’, a Balaton 18, ‘Mistral’ and ‘Sirocco’, both Sailfish 18’s were neck and neck over the line and fighting it out all the way. The Hartley ran a steady course, as did ‘Shoestring Cuatro’, a Gamba. Just before the finish ‘Conny’ was baulked by ‘Sirocco’ who got into irons right in front of her whilst trying to round the mark. The necessary

avoiding action cost both boats time, pushing them back in the final placings. Brian in ‘Shoestring Dos’, a Laser 2000, decided to be an early star by doing an extra lap, much to the amusement of everybody. It was decided to run a second race of four laps. With the wind springing up it was over in twenty eight minutes with ‘Conny’ showing what she can do with the right crew. A good day, with very tight racing between the seven boats, evidenced by some of the time differences between each place of being just 2, 9, 13 and 15 seconds. The next race day is 8th May. For more info on SAMM have a look at their web site at www.sailingmarmenor.com

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

‘All Inclusive’ Poverty In a world where politicians continually remind us of the need for austerity in a bid to finally overcome the worldwide recession, we are becoming a society that is content to witness a growing demand for food banks, child poverty and the homeless on our streets. These issues are not confined to inner city London, San Francisco or Madrid, but are also an issue in the relatively wealthy Canary Islands, a holidaymaker’s paradise - for some anyway. Last week, my local supermarket once again generously participated in a drive to restock local food banks with much needed provisions. Shoppers were encouraged to give what dried and tinned food they could, which the supermarket matched in terms of additional stock. This is a welcome initiative and mostly very well supported by local people. It is ironic that these collections and food banks operate just a short distance away from the hotels that are serving enormous buffet breakfasts, lunches and dinners to their pampered guests. The food banks give a whole new meaning to the term ‘all inclusive’. ‘All inclusive' poverty is all around us and most of us see it every day. Each week, after I have filled my trolley in the local supermarket, I meet several men and women begging for cash. Usually, they want to take the empty trolley from me so that they can collect the one-euro deposit when it is returned. In recent months, I have noticed more people begging for money outside the doors of supermarkets on the island. Some are certainly chancers, whilst others appear to be gen-

uinely in trouble. Many clearly have a serious problem with alcohol or drugs, whilst others appear to have made a career out of begging, with regular faces appearing each week. Most are friendly enough and accept refusals from shoppers, whilst I have seen others hurl verbal abuse at those who refuse to donate, and in one case I have seen anger spill into physical assault. We are often told that we should not give cash to beggars on the streets, but to give regularly to specified charities instead. People tend to make one of three decisions when asked for their spare change. Some will look away; others will smile apologetically and say that they have no spare change, whilst others may give a coin or two. We are warned not to give to give to fraudulent people, as it encourages even more drunken behaviour and drug abuse, and some are not needy at all. This is a problem that I have wrestled with for years. I am happy to give to someone in need, but how do I know that I am not making the matter worse? I remember once being stopped by an elderly woman who asked for some cash. I felt sorry for her, but refused to give her cash, since I suspected that she was an alcoholic. Instead, I told her that I would buy her a coffee and sandwich instead. She followed me a short way to the cafe bar, and then suddenly kicked me on the shins, picked up her skirts and fled as fast as her legs would carry her. She had clearly got the wrong message, and probably thought that I was trying to pick her up. I have often thought that local charities for the homeless should set up a kind of ‘Luncheon Voucher’ scheme, whereby givers could buy books of vouchers from newsagents and local shops, and the vouchers could then be given to the

By Bar rie Mahoney needy on the streets, instead of cash. The vouchers could then be used in exchange only for hot drinks or food from participating shops and cafes. To my mind it would certainly make the difficult question of giving, and to whom we should give, much easier. All-inclusive poverty must not become a norm that we are conditioned to accept. Not everyone who begs is a drug addict, alcoholic or a fraudster, and even if they are we must be careful not to lose sight of our common humanity. An exciting finale to the league saw a close match between El Capitan and Porterhouse but the League A winners were in an unassailable position and further extended their lead by 2 more points. The Hub Hyenas didn’t have an easy win against the Junction Jackals but two more points took them 8 points clear from the teams in 3rd, 4th and 5th spot who all ended the league on 30 match points. The Jackals secured 3rd place in League A tough with 48 legs points, Breakaways in 4th with 40 leg points and a much needed 2 match points to take them above Massey’s. Porterhouse and Ale House had some great games this season and the 25 and 23 match points doesn’t reflect the excellent performances they put in. The Pint Depot Kings always took a couple of games off the other teams but unfortunately not enough to win a match. League B saw three teams in possible contention for the top spot and it was all down to this last match. The Tavern hosted Trade Wind’s Pirates and secured an 8:4 victory to bring them up to 20 match points and 43 legs. Meanwhile, two doors down, the ladies of the Junction Jaguars would have required an 11:1 win over the

As the League draws to a close, it is very nice to see how well we have progressed over the years, and that we have so many Hot Shots. Hellraisers to equalise on match points but pip the Tavern on leg points. Unfortunately for the feisty felines, the Hellraisers played their best games of the season and all the Jags could do was a very hard fought 7:5 win to see them finishing in 2nd place in League B. The Hen’s Teeth then reversed places with the Sporting Life Misfits with another close 7:5 clincher. A great season with new teams and new winners. Looking forward to the presentation night on 12th May when the blind Team Knockout competition will see us breaking down the team boundaries! Simone de Lacy, Secretary, Euronics Darts League JUNCTION JACKALS v HUB HYENAS 5:7 The Hyenas had little to play for except pride in this last fixture of the season. Safe in second position they were three points adrift from top spot. The Jackals on the other hand needed a win or other results to go their way to take third. When the Hyenas arrived with only 5 players the home side thought they might be in with a chance and the early play went their way, taking the first two trebles. However the Hub came roaring back led by captain Simon Williams (116,140) & John Eyre (140) to take the next three legs. We then enjoyed the spectacle of Joe Hawkins playing doubles on his own. Despite the fact Nigel & Mick tried to give him a glimmer of hope he was finally shut out after the home team eventually hit double 1. Barry Schofield and Andy Rutter (100,140) won the first two singles for the Jackals to give them hope of 2 points but sadly it was not to be as the Hyenas took the last 4 legs. It was not as straight forward as it might seem, however, as Simon Williams took forever to hit double 1 whilst Nigel Elvery couldn’t complete a 9 finish. It got a bit tedious but quite amusing all the same. Report : Phil de Lacy HUB HELLRAISERS v THE JUNCTION JAGUARS 5 : 7 Typical, last game of the season and the Hellraisers come into their own. T1 saw Hellraisers Amanda, Cele and Lesley take on Jaguars Pat, Hilda and Wendy with immediate high scores of 105 from Amanda and 100 from Pat. Cele from the Hellraisers took the game on D3. T2 had Hellraisers Sue, Cheryl and Claire v Simone, Cynthia and Tracy, with El Capitan Cheryl taking the game on D5. T3 and the pressure was on for Hellriasers Joy, Ali as they played Lisa, Hilda and Gail. With Joy taking the game for the Hellraisers on D3. At that point we do not know who was more shocked with the trebles results the Hellraisers or Jaguars. D1 had Hellraisers Lesley and Joy play Pat and Tracey with Tracey taking the first Doubles game with a D1. Next up was Cele and Claire against Wendy and Lisa for the Junction. Wendy winning the game with a D2. Final Doubles saw Hellraisers Alison and Cheryl v Jaguars Cynthia and Gail. With Alison coming up trumps for the Hellraisers and getting us back in the game with a D1. Grub up and it was party buffet time ! Nice Cup cakes Cheryl! Start of the singles and the Hub girls have it all to play for never have we took the lead from the start ! S1 and S2 was taken by Cynthia D2 and Hilda D20 for the Junction Ladies. C3 had Hellraiser Captain claw a win back with a nice D9. S4, S5 and S6

were then claimed by the Junction Jaguars Wendy D20, Lisa D1 and Pat D9. This was our highest scoring match of the season so only crediting throws of 90 and over ! oooh...Amanda 105, Pat 100, Hilda 92 and 95 , Tracey 100, Alison 90, Lisa 110 and 90, Lesley 110 and 98, Sue 117 and the highest scorer of the night going to Pat in the last singles game 128, nice one Pat, extra Cookie for you. Yet another great night was had by all that played and watched in the Hub, what a shame it was the last game of the season, but we will be back next year! Be warned ... Big thank you to Cheryl our Team Captain and all of the time she puts in to make our team happen, also big thanks to Simon and Cam of the Hub for their continued support and amazing hospitality. See you all at the Presentation night. Report : Sarah Oldham PORTERHOUSE v EL CAPITAN 5:7 A great result for the Porters who were really pleased to have achieved 5 points against El Capitan. The night was very enjoyable with great camaraderie. Mark Filer was at his usual standard with some brilliant scores in all of his games (135, 140) in his first triples and 140, 125, 111 in his singles. Peter Ayres (our favourite tufty) was back to his usual peak performance scoring 133 and 95 in his singles and finishing on D20. Siddy was also on form scoring 85, 85 and 100 in his singles and finishing on D10. Edmunde played well in his singles against Ray Sanderson scoring 80, 85 and 140 but Ray was also running on gas and scored 100 and 80 and in the last game of the season and finished on D1. There was more than one man of the match but the ones to watch were Mark Filer, Edmunde and Den for El Capitan and Siddy, Toddy and Tufty for the Porters. The end of season plate was awarded to Tufty (one of the sandwich plates with his name on) which was pinned to the dart board for everyone to throw darts at. A sporting night enjoyed by all. Report Sue Sanderson THE TAVERN V TRADEWINDS PIRATES 8:4 Tradewinds had been at the top of the B league following the split in January this year. We had fought hard to keep our top spot and were confident that we would stay there as we wanted to beat our runners up position last year when we were the Que Pasa Kestrels. Unfortunately for us a few weeks ago Evolution team pulled out of the league and as per the rules, points were deducted from the team’s that beat them, leaving Tradewinds 2 points deducted as we were the only team to beat Evolution. We had everything to play for and with 2 poorly team members awaiting knee surgery and several members absent, pulled out all the stops to get a team together for the night. Sadly for us it didn’t happen. The Tavern played very well on the night and were vociferous in their celebrations even before the match had reached its conclusion knowing that they had won the B league. I would like to thank my team for their brilliant efforts throughout the season and for pulling together each week for the practice. No results available as score sheet not received. Both singles games were very close, Pat McEwan winning the ladies singles 21-19, and John Raby winning the mens also 21-19. In the pairs Nancy and Alan Campbell lost 7-24: the trips had a good result Jan Allen, Paul Thomas, Dave McEwan winning 197: Rinks had a very close game right up until the last end winning 16-15. With only the rinks still playing, there was one shot difference in the overall shots, , both skips had one wood left, San Miguel were holding two, Emerald Isle skip took one away with his last wood, leaving the overall shots level. After much discussion it was decided that Dave should not play his last wood, any movement on the jack and we could have gone three down. The shots ended up 84 across. Well done all. April 25th saw the Victors travel to play Quesada Blenheims. As usual it was a hard fought game with the home side coming out winners 10=4 and a shot difference of 118=89. EI had 2 winning trips; Y Mallaburn M Veale and F Close by 27=14, C Ayling G Odell and skip J Mulloy 20=19, made more remarkable by EI coming back from being 19=4 down to win April 25th brought Quesada Lancasters to the Emerald Isle. Finals on 23rd when Russell Marks won the men's singles and June Jones, Les Bedford, Colin Lindgren & Keith Jones won the mixed rinks, it has been a gentle return to “business as usual” for the league matches this week. SABA leagues will be on Mondays, although there was a bye for both SL Wellingtons & SL Hercules, and Fridays - because of the interruption by the Spanish Championships in mid May. The Federated VC league drops back into the Wednesday slot left vacant by the winter league (but there are some exceptions so check the fixture lists). VC League, Wednesday 27th April. SL Falcons at home to Quesada Lions had a good result 8 pts-4, 97 shots-

singles - Colin Lindgren 21-15, triples – Pam Lockett, Sabrina Marks, Noel Verity 25-15. SL Kestrels were away at Horadada and worked hard for 6pts-6, taking the shots 76-70. Winners: ladies' singles – Ros Holmes 21-9, triples – Jean Parkes, Keith Roberts, Paul Parkes 28-11 but unfortunately with a player short, due to a mix up, we gave away 2pts & 10 shots + an additional penalty of 2 points. We'll just have to keep trying but thankfully the weather looks as though it will be playing “ball” as well next week. It was a relatively quiet week for bowls, with just the one league match, that being a VCL match for our federated players against San Miguel Deputier. Always tough opponents, with three of the rinks very close; we came away with the two singles matches and lost the pairs and trips by a very small margin. A good effort all round, with the overall shots being 87-95. Jane Hamill 21-04. Richard Lee 21-18. Dave Haynes and David Whitworth 18-21. Jim Gracie, Jan Bright and Stew Hamill 20-21. Marion Haynes, June Whitworth, Malc Elmore and Shirley Edwards 7-31. It did mean that with no league fixtures for me this week I was able to take part in both the club chest on Tuesday and the chicken run on Thursday. There was a great deal of fun and I had the chance to watch some younger bowlers, in bowls terms, who played some great shots. As always on these days of fun, concentration can lapse, particularly my own, but the main aim is sociability and they certainly achieved that. Monday 2nd May - Sunday 8th May, 2016

The Linda Rennie Trophy San Miguel Golf Society at La Serena Forty-one members, accompanied by 6 guests, gathered at La Serena golf course to compete for the Linda Rennie Trophy, presented to the Society by her husband in memory of Linda and recognition of the support given by SMGS through its donations to the cancer charity fund established in her name. A little over a month since SMGS last visited the course, when a strong wind made scoring difficult. No such excuse this time around, but only 9 of the members competing managed to score 30 points or above. Whilst some faces familiar from the previous visit again made it in to the winners circle, such as President Phil Birtwistle, Richard Wale and Chris Hamblett, it was Glen Rapley who came out on top to take home the silver salver presented in Linda’s honour. So well done to Glen, who holds on to the trophy until it is again competed for this time next year. One further game in this year’s SMGS singles match play competition was completed, with Steve Fleet just overcoming Captain Barry Roehrig, but doing it in style with a birdy at the first play off hole, with Barry having only managed a mere par. The day’s competition results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 5th Keith Wraithmell (26), 4th Bo Leidstrom (28), 3rd Mick Roscoe (29), 2nd

Chris Hamblett (32) and 1st Norman Padmore with 33 points. Silver Category: 5th Mike Fearnehough (27 on CB), 4th Richard Cleary (28), 3rd Ken Flaherty (29), 2nd Phil Birtwistle (35), pipped by Glen Rapley, who posted the day’s best score of 36 points. Gold Category: 5th Paul Wainwright (30), 4th Steve Fleet (31 on CB), 3rd Richard McCann (31 on CB), 2nd Richard Wale (33 on CB), and 1st, once again extending his Order of Merit lead, John Osborne, winning on count back with 33 points. The Abacus, a fine bottle of red, was won, due to the true winner not hanging around for prize giving, by Mike Stone. Nearest the pins on the par 3’s (open to all) went to Ivor Turkington (3), Richard Wale (9), Tony Smale (15) and Theo Boelhouwer (17). The best guest prize went to Peter Devlin (31), the runner-up prize to Mick “the Grip” Reeves (30) Our thanks go to the staff at La Serena golf course for their contribution to the day. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Barry Roehrig a call on 966 731 033 to find out more about the society and its weekly golf get-togethers. Next week we will be at Villamartin.

There was a record breaking score in our first game of the week on Monday when we played a Best 2 of 4 with all scores counting on the Par 5's. The team of Yvonne Phipps, Brian Townend, John Drakesmith and Allen McClusky scored an incredible 117 pts beating the previous Club record score for this format by 14 pts. In second place with a score of 100 pts that would normally be enough to win were Lindsay Forbes, Ellen Drakesmith, Brian Dent and Mike Chapman. On Wednesday we played the penultimate round of our Joker Eclectic Stableford competition where the winner is the player with the most points taking their best score on each hole over 5 rounds. On each round one hole on the front and back nine is selected as the Joker to score double points.

By Mike Chapman Following Wednesday's round Lindsay Forbes remains the leader on 71 pts four points clear of the chasing pack. The unpredictable Brian Dent was top scorer on the day with a superb 44 pts. The top three in each Category were as follows: Cat 1. 1st Ken Robertson 43 pts 2nd Brian Townend 42 pts 3rd Ron Phipps 42 pts Cat 2. 1st Brian Dent 44 pts 2nd Allen McClusky 40 pts 3rd Marleen Billen 38 pts 2's Club: Ron Phipps, Liz Robertson, Dave Pulling, Skye Neale, Lindsay Forbes and Terry Field Unfortunately we only managed to get about half way round on Friday before the heavens opened causing play to be abandoned so the Quarter finals of our singles match play competition will have to be rescheduled.

‘MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF (Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services).

Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. ‘GOLF AND ADRENALINE’ Over the past few years we have been advised on the effects of adrenaline and how it provides the so-called “pumped-up” feeling. It may seem to some golfers that they should promote and use this as it offers some sort of an advantage but this is not so because the two main reasons for adrenaline flow are anger and fear and these are the two main feelings in golf, you must avoid as much as possible. It is also produced when you are too excited or at times when you find the pressure much too difficult to handle and if you add to this the lack of control provided by the fear of ’getting it wrong’, then you are really in trouble and often allow yourself to become a quivering jelly which just can’t cope. One thing you must remember to do on these occasions is to take one club less because you will almost certainly hit the ball further than you normally would, and obviously on those days when lethargy is more prominent than excitement, one club more. You have all seen players hit the ball too far, particularly in the professional game, and in the Open at Troon many years ago you saw Greg Norman drive the ball a tremendous distance on the 18th hole but into a bunker considered ‘out of reach’ and this was the direct result of adrenaline, which limits the ability to control our actions. Obviously, there are times in life when you do need this extra energy to cope with an emergency and this is the reason why the human body can supply such energy, however playing golf should not be one of these times because it is a game which demands peace of mind, and all the feelings which are associated with contentment. You must strike the ball with peaceful authority, then you will hit the ball the correct distance and have a much better chance of it going in the right direction and at all times you must avoid being too excited, try not to become angry and not allow the fear aspect of golf to reduce you to an also ran. Peaceful authority is POSITIVE power. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. Shot shy Torry pay the price When you consider that it took fully 76 mins before Torry had a worthwhile shot on target, then it is no surprise that they left Estadio Vilaplana Mariel empty handed. But, if consideration is also given to the fact that this team had not trained for over 3 weeks as a protest at lack of wages this year, then it is hardly surprising that match sharpness, or inclination, was also sadly lacking. Club captain Jorge had joined preferente club Callosa Deportivo a few days beforehand, but the remainder of the squad showed solidarity in their desire to see the season through, which now has only 2 more games to run. Hopefully help is on it's way come June, when a promised council grant should be forthcoming. Rayo were promoted via the play offs last season, giving Torry a first chance to visit this quaint little ground, which shares it's surroundings with a thriving local petanca club. Torry coach Pedreno elected to ring the changes from last weeks 3-1 victory over Recambios Colon, recalling Carrasco and Chupe to the starting line up, in place of Higon and Prieto. Twas the hosts who started the brightest, in fact the ball didn't leave Torry's half of the field for a good 5 mins. An extremely noisy partisan band, complete with the obligatory bass drum, were in fine voice as a goodly crowd of almost 700 got behind their team. And they had plenty to cheer, for Rayo appeared to be shooting at will on sight of goal. On 9 mins, Beibel rifled a shot from the edge of the box just over, then midway through the

Rayo Ibense .................1 CD Torrevieja ...............0 half, Ramonet followed suit. The same player forced Miguel to make a fine low save shortly afterwards, then on 35 mins, Torry's agile keeper repeated his heroics. Ibense were completely dominating play, perfectly illustrated when 2 minutes later, Gomis headed over, then with the half nearing its conclusion, Javi Naverro shot over the bar from distance. It took only 3 second half minutes for the hosts to take the lead. There can be no complaints at the penalty awarded for blatant hand ball by Javi Selvas, which was hammered home by top scorer Javi Naverro, his 10th of the season. Pedreno made a double substitution on 54 mins, bringing on Prieto and Higon,

then another on the hour mark as Sanchez entered the fray. Once again Torry's man of the match Miguel was called into action with a top drawer save, before Torry earned their first corner on 66 mins, which the hard working Lewis headed wide of the far post. Lewis was unlucky on 71 mins when his angled cross cum shot skimmed the top of the bar, before bouncing to safety. Prieto's shot was saved by the outstretched leg of Marcos, then fellow Torry sub Sanchez forced a worldly save from the Rayo keeper, as Torry found that this late burst of action proved just too little too late!! Next Sun 8 May, ko 6pm, Torry host relegation threatened Jove Espanol at Vicente Garcia stadium, in what promises to be an entertaining fixture. Torry fans are urged to vote for their player of the season trophy, which will be presented straight after the match by the Torry Army.
