uthorities say that a fire at Cabo Roig’s Bushwacka music bar caused heavy smoke damage on Friday morning when 2 fire crews from Torrevieja were called to the scene after heavy smoke was seen billowing out of the front of the Aguamarina Aparthotel. The fire was reported at 07.25, seemingly by a passerby, with the Policia Local quickly cordoning off the scene prior to the arrival of the bomberas at about 7.40hrs. The source of the fire is thought to be electrical, emanating from the kitchen area, with speculation mainly surrounding the delivery of new refrigerators during the previous day. Ger O’Shea, proprietor of the

popular Bog Road pub, just half a dozen doors along from the Bushwacka, was asleep in his flat directly above the fire when he heard lots of banging outside. Continued on Page 2

“Initially I thought it was kids messing around in the street below,” he said, “but when I caught a smell of the smoke I realised there was a problem and in view of recent occurrences in London, it didn’t take me too long to get out of my apartment.” Fortunately the fire seems to have been contained to just one side of the building, directly below Block B of the Aguamarina Aparthotel, in which there are approximately 15 flats, of which only a handful were occupied at the time. It is thought that the Bushwacka’s triple layered roof may well have helped to contain the flames and stop them spreading into the flats above. A spokesman for the Bomberas said that everyone was evacuated safely and there were no injuries to any of the occupants. Firefighters remained on the scene for over four hours as having extinguished the flame, whilst they continued to work to ventilate the smoke that had

leaked into the building and into the adjoining bank and Property Company, the fire reignited and had to be put out on a second occasion. They said that there was extensive smoke damage both to the BMN bank and to Frontline Properties either side of the bar although O’Riordans and the bars and buildings beyond that all seem to have been spared. Similarly, many of the apartments above the Bushwacka had also been damaged by the spread of the thick black smoke. When staff arrived at the BMN just after 8am the bank was also full of the fumes with the Bomberas having to deploy powerful fans to dissipate the stench. There was a similar situation at Frontline Properties with the owner doubting that that he would be able to open up his business during the course of the day. “The smell is awful. My staff cannot sit in the office and until all the fumes and the smoke have gone I won’t know if there are any problems with the office or the equipment,” he said.

Paul Bush, the proprietor of the Bushwacka, was eventually notified through Facebook by Ger O’Shea and a member of staff who had only finished her shift a couple of hours earlier. He was quickly on hand and escorted into the building by a fireman where he surveyed the damage. With any investigation still ongoing the cause of the fire is currently undetermined but with the kitchen absolutely gutted and extensive smoke damage throughout the bar area it looks as though the Bushwacka could be closed for some time to come. Speaking to Paul later in the day he remained utterly dejected as water continued to pour into his unit from damaged pipes and with Hidraqua seemingly unable to cut off the supply. Neither had there been any response from his insurers, although he was still hopeful that matters could be quickly resolved. Clients who wish further information will be able to find news on the Bushwacka Facebook page where Paul has promised to provide regular updates.

Salinas campaign to ring 200 rare gulls O ver 30 volunteers spent the day on Friday attempting to ring almost 200 newborn chicks born this year on the Torrevieja

Salinas. The event was organised by Councillor Fanny Serrano on the occasion of the International Day of the Environment with the intention of ringing all Audouin's gull chicks. Also providing their help and assistance were the Department of Agriculture, Environment, Climate Change and Rural Development. In the late 1960s, this was one of the world's rarest gulls, with a population of only 1,000 pairs. It has established new colonies, but still remains quite rare with a population of about 10,000 pairs. In little more than an hour in the salinas, however, a total of 200 Audouin gull chicks were sighted and identified and with a pair of PVC rings. The councilor said that they try to carry out the process in the shortest possible time "to reduce the impact and the stress on the colony of this threatened seagull". Municipal biologist, Juan Antonio Pujol, explained that this banding will be very useful in allowing ornithologists to obtain more data about the biology of this species and its migratory habits and thus contribute to its

recovery. Blood samples have been taken to study possible diseases (an operation carried out by the veterinary team from the Sata Faz Recovery Centre in Alicante) who were also able to analyse the possible concentration of heavy metals in the diet of these birds. The colony has increased by 200 breeding pairs in the last year

TWO NEW GRADUATES FOR POLICIA LOCAL

Pujol has said that there has been an encouraging increase in the size of the colony which has settled in the facilities of the Salinera Company, which is also involved in the protection of these birds, from more than 1,700 breeding pairs in 2016 to over 1,900 today.

Torrevieja’s Policia Local welcomed two new fully trained police dogs last week following their graduation at the Valencian Institute of Public Safety and Emergencies (IVASPE) which they have been attending during the last few weeks. Along with their handlers José Antonio Del Peral Cantisano and José Ángel Martínez Pérez, the dogs, Athos and Eko, have recently undergone a training course of 150 hours, of which 40 hours have been classroom and theory work for the two officers as well as a further 110 hours working and training with their dogs. Following their graduation they are now fully trained and specialised in the prevention of drug consumption and trafficking. In addition to the Local Police from Torrevieja, a total of 37 Local Police and dogs from the whole Valencian Community were on hand to collect their diplomas. The officers and their dogs will now be assigned to the Grupo Refuerzo Operativo (GRO).According to the mayor, who congratulated the two officers on their achievement, it is expected that the creation of the Canine Unit in the Local Police of Torrevieja will soon be approved. For this reason the City is prioritising the training of agents in this specific task.

Hospital Unions denounce ER collapse in Torrevieja

Trade Unions at Torrevieja Hospital are demanding the reopening of rooms that were closed by the management in May as a measure to save costs. They say that the lack of facilities caused unacceptable queues in the Accident and Emergency Department over the recent weekend with, at one point, 28 patients waiting for admission. The Unions denounced the situation which they say is a regular occurrence since the closure in May of about 40 patient rooms located in a second floor wing, next to paediatrics. According to one source, the closure has once again caused "a collapse of such magnitude that the Emergency Room doctors were unable to provide an adequate service, because there was no physical space to locate to the patients". The works council considers it "incoherent" that the facility is "working to obtain a Joint

Commission accreditation, which is an international recognition of quality and safety", and yet "at the weekend" the emergency room was unable to deal with the 28 Patients”. They say that they have "brought the severity of the current situation to the attention of the hospital management on many occasions” adding that it will be further aggravated during the summer period by the large influx of tourists. However a spokesman for the management said that “On Sunday, as a result of the good weather, the influx of patients was greater than on the other days of the week, but it was nothing out of the ordinary. The attention that staff were able to provide was correct and perfectly acceptable. This morning at 12:30 the situation was absolutely normal, with no patients pending and everything operating as usual.”

BLUE FLAG AWARDS FOR Paramount ORIHUELA AND TORREVIEJA theme park Luisa Boné and Javier Manzanares, the councillors for the beaches in laid to rest Orihuela and Torrevieja respectively, were both on hand at the Nautical Club of Altea on Monday morning where they received the blue flag awards for their region’s beaches. The presentations were made by the Minister of Agriculture, Environment, Climate Change and Rural Development, Elena Cebrián who gave her "most sincere congratulations for the continuous work that has been carried out by the two respective councils with the refurbishment and improvements during their periods of government. Orihuela beaches in receipt of the awards were: Punta Prima, Cala Mosca, Cala Estaca, Cala Bosque, Cala Capitán, La Caleta, Cala de Aguamarina, La Glea and Barranco Rubio in addition to the two marinas at Cabo Roig and Dehesa de Campoamor. The Torrevieja recipients were: Torrelamata Sur, Los Locos, el Cura, Los Náufragos and Cala Pitera. Javier Manzanares, said he was delighted "mainly because these awards come after all of the localities beaches have suffered three major storms during which the beaches of our coast were badly damaged". Luisa Boné, meanwhile, extended her congratulations to the municipal staff who all work so hard throughout the year to make this recognition possible. She described their job as "brilliant" saying that she was "proud of the entire team who work so well."

The Regional Court of Justice (TSJ) has finally laid to rest any remote possibility of the establishment of the Paramount Theme Park in the area after it confirmed that over 20% of the emblematic project for which the foundation stone was laid by the Murcia President in 2012, occupies the Carrascoy-El Valle Regional Park. The organization Ecologistas en Acción, who submitted the appeal, expressed their satisfaction with the court’s decision stating that the decision by the municipality of Alhama de Murcia to situate it across a protected area in the first place was absolutely ridiculous. Although the court decision would appear to be the final nail in the project’s coffin, in reality the development was actually abandoned some years ago because of a lack of investors. Would you want to cope with organising a funeral in Spain W

hen a close friend or a family member dies, the last thing you need is the worry of complex regulations and the red-tape of a Spanish funeral. At such a difficult time could you or your family cope with organising a funeral in Spain? If not you need look no further than PF Samper, a third generation independent family funeral director, based in Pilar de la Horadada. We know that the death of a loved one is a difficult experience, one that all of us are likely to experience during our lifetime, and when mourning the loss of a friend or a family member, the very last thing you want to think about is the planning of a funeral, a fact that is considerately recognised by Francisca, a long time supporter of The Royal British Legion, who has been helping the expat community from her family run business in Pilar for over 20 years. “At PF Samper”, she says, “we aim to provide only the highest level of personal attention as we ease this process for you and your family. We will take expert care and provide due consideration to ensure that your loved one gets an appropriate and caring farewell, whilst making the funeral planning process is as painless as possible”. “We will arrange a dedicated funeral service that will provide you and your family with full value, without compromise, a service that is designed to show respect, whilst still maintaining the dignity,

the values and traditions so cherished by those who we serve”.

Francisca has been providing a dignified service to the expat community for over 20 years

“We will also ensure that every life tribute is distinctive, personal and affordable, in honouring to the full a life that has been lived”. In providing a 24 hour service, throughout the entire province of Alicante and North Western Murcia, PF Samper can be providing you with that care and support within an extremely short space of time. Francisca will immediately respond to your call and while you are able to grieve with dignity she will quickly take charge of all the initial arrangements. “If you have a previously organised funeral plan we will closely liaise with your provider but if you are without such an agreement we will make all the initial arrangements for you, and unlike many similar companies here in Spain we will not demand any payment in advance”. The deceased will be prepared to lie in repose in our own private chapel, as detailed arrangements, with either you or your family, can then be left to a more appropriate time. One aspect that Francisca does warn of are the varying conditions applied by different funeral directors and Tanatorias. “Whichever company you use you must always make sure that you are completely satisfied with the costs and the arrangements, and if in any doubt do not sign any papers”.

“T

his is particularly important” she says “when the deceased has passed away in hospital, many of which have their own preferred agents.” Ultimately, of course, it’s all about trust and peace of mind, something of which you can be assured when dealing with Francisca or her assistant Eric Nicholls. The company has its own private chapel of rest, mortuary and crematorium in Pilar de la Horadada although the service can be organised by PF Samper at any church that the family wishes across the entire province of Alicante and North Western Murcia. Ministers, flowers and transport can also be organised by PF Samper who will also take care of all necessary documentation and certificates. Likewise the arrangements can be made regardless

of faith and they can also be made to suit the time frame of the family concerned, allowing mourners to fly in from abroad if that is what is required. Whether the service takes place the following day or a week later, unlike many other funeral directors, there is no extra charge. Following cremation the urn will be delivered when required, and in the proper traditions of a genuinely family run business, details regarding payment can be made at a later date. Francisca says, “Our job consists of making sure that the families remember the day of the funeral as a very special occasion and that the loved one who has passed away is provided with the esteem and the respect that every person deserves. Though the life is ended we want to make sure that the memory lingers on”.

Much needed facelift for Campoamor

Tower Blocks for Torrevieja Seafront As many architects and planners curb their enthusiasm for towers in the sky following the Kensington fire a Spanish builder is determined to construct three such structures along the Torrevieja seafront. Last week Metrovacesa published their environmental impact study as they seek permission to build three tower blocks, two 29-story apartment complexes and a third building of 23 storeys which will be a hotel.

The proposed site is in front of the International Marina with the publication being the first step in the company’s efforts to gain planning permission for the three structures. The blocks will all be situated on Avda Gregorio Marañón alongside two further towers which the real estate company, Baraka, are hoping to build. In terms of their height, all will far outstrip any of the other apartment blocks in the area although the builders state that they will be constructed on a part of the coastline that faces south-south-east which will ensure that there are no shadows cast on the adjacent beach between 10am and 7pm. (Image Metrovacesa)

Anyone driving around the Campoamor area cant but fail to notice the maintenance and refurbishment that has been going on around Campoamor and Playa de la Glea, where a stretch of the seafront road, Avda de las Adelfas, has been resurfaced and yellow lined as well as the area a little further along, around the Restaurante Montepiedra. Residents say that the improvements are long overdue and the fact that they have been carried out only a matter of months after the appointment of councillor Luisa Boné is no coincidence. Since her arrival as Councillor for Beaches she has worked tirelessly to ensure that promises have been kept. Boné was also on hand last week to explain the work that is being carried out to the pedestrian walkway located to the north of La Glea brach.

She said that due to the severe weather suffered in the municipality in December and January, and the damage suffered as a result of torrential rains and strong waves, a report was carried out assessing the damage to the walkway as a result of which a file was processed to repair the foundation of thefootbridge. The work consists of overhauling the foundations and the reconstruction of the protection barrier that had collapsed in Playa de la Glea. She said that the council has only recently received the approval of the Provincial Coastal service to carry out the work but that it is now well in hand at a cost of 35,991.74 euros and that it is expected to be completed in a couple of weeks.

‘Letters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

This Cruel Sea

It

is true that less tourists return home alive than have set off for their holiday in the Canary Islands. This disturbing fact is not one that the tourist industry will thank me for highlighting this week, but it is time that the stark facts are raised once again and that holidaymakers are alerted to the potential risks of a holiday in the Canary Islands, and other popular tourist destinations. The Canary Islands are a wonderful place for a holiday, but it is best not to return home in a coffin. We have the best climate in the world; each of the seven inhabited islands are unique and offer a range of activities and experiences that will enrich the spirit of even the most hardened and cynical traveller. The problem for tourists is not the islands, but the Atlantic Ocean. Ours is a cold and cruel sea. It is deceptive in its appeal, but it is no Mediterranean Sea. Many tourists forget this and quickly succumb to the delights of this turbulent water. Its many charms lull the unsuspecting tourist into a false sense of security with its frothy and inviting appeal to swimmers, surf boarders, wind surfers, but those with a true knowledge of the Atlantic Ocean will be only too well aware of its rapidly changing moods and boiling anger that erupts from time to time. As I write this, statistics from Real Federación Española de Salvamento y Socorrismo are worrying. There have already been 35 drownings in the first half of 2017, which is more than the same

period in 2016, which places the Canary Islands at the top of a very disturbing league table, with most of these casualties being tourists. Statistics published in 2015 indicate that one tourist drowns every six days in the Canary Islands, a record that is one of the worst in Spain. The shock of very cold water, swimming after a heavy meal, after drinking alcohol or taking drugs are some of the reasons for these individual tragedies. Cardiac arrest in the sea is not unusual, since it is the result of the shock of cold water, even in temperatures of around 25 degrees. The water around these islands rarely exceeds 24 degrees, even in the hottest periods of the year; it is not just freezing water that is a danger to swimmers. Despite the temptations to cool off after a day in the sun, swimmers can get into difficulties in as short a time as five minutes. Many tourists forget that high winds, rough seas and treacherous currents are the main reasons for many drownings that take place each year. A strong undertow and unpredictable rip currents are also a grave danger to swimmers. They are unseen and unpredictable, catch swimmers without warning and carry them a considerable distance out to sea. Rough seas around our beautiful coastline can also be a danger for unsuspecting walkers, which may occur even in what appears to be good and settled weather. It depends what mood the Atlantic is in, and freak waves have sometimes swept walkers out to sea. Some of these issues were brought home to me last weekend when I visited one of our popular, local beaches. It was a beautiful, yet stormy morning and the red warning flags were flying. Despite this, there were many swimmers in the sea, together with several surf-

By Bar rie Mahoney Many swimmers continue to ignore lifeguards

boarders. I spotted two lifeguards urging swimmers to come to the shore for safety, which most obeyed. These swimmers were then directed to a safer part of the beach. However, several swimmers, including the surfboarders, continued to ignore the lifeguards. It is this attitude of bravado and ignorance that is behind many swimming tragedies, and it is hard to legislate against foolishness. Sadly, it is also these attitudes that place the safety of lifeguards and other members of the emergency services at risk. Despite the best efforts of the islands’ government, the municipalities and the emergency services, swimming tragedies continue to occur far too frequently. As there has been so much speculation and discussion about SAN LUIS BOWLS GREEN hopefully this will explain the current situation: “When Vic announced that we were to have the base done, a new underlay and a new carpet, as discussed and quoted for by the Greengauge representative, we all had high expectations of a great playing surface to be the “flagship” for them, of what they could provide. Unfortunately, this has not been the case as the base has shown to be “not suitable for purpose”. The Company, commissioned by the Greengauge representative, after much discussion via Julian Pering agreed to try and rectify the matter f.o.c. In order to do so the carpet and underlay had to be unstitched and lifted and then when the base was done relaid, and restitched - AT A COST - through no fault of Vic’s. Greengauge were not prepared to give in anyway at all saying the base was not within their remit, although their representative had been involved with “providing” the company. Vic has decided NOT to have any more work done on the green FOR THE TIME BEING. We have a good carpet and underlay but unfortunately the expectations of a great playing surface has not been met. BUT it is still perfectly playable and no worse than certain rinks at other clubs. So, let’s just get on with bowling and enjoying our matches and each other’s company and show what a great club we are.” For more information: www.sanluisbowls.byethost7.com or contact June Jones, Club Captain: 691 903 773.

La Marina Report by Barry Latham Last week we beat the VCL League Leaders and this week we upset the number two by beating San Miguel at our place 10-4. The togetherness continued for the Parsons, both Janet and Peter played the Singles and won 21-17 each. Isn’t it lovely? Captain Colin Armitage, Martin Butler and Lynne Armitage had a tight game but came out the winners 14-12. Last (Well, off the green.) but not least the rink of Barry Latham, Wendy Latham, Mike Smith and Barbara Forshaw had a good win by 18 to 13. The overall shot difference was very close, we got it by one. We might still be last in the league but we are at the moment upsetting the leaders. May it continue!!!! When I arrived to watch the Pilots I was told as we walked to the ground we were down on very rink bar one. Obviously it must have been our cheering and ribald comments that spurred the Pilots to eventually chop down the Greenland Gladiators. Good to see a lot of our friends from our old club but even better to beat them 10-4. Close all the way though but gradually La Marina took over. Mike Smith, Peter Bailey and Jean Tregoing plus Terry and Jean Perchard and Reg Jackson both pulled off creditable draws. Dave Taylor, Tom Spencer and Mo Taylor had a good win by four shots. And the Hadaways are back ……. to form both winning. Dave, Arthur Cronk and Dave O’Sullivan won 20-15 and Shirley, Steve Hindle and Carol Smith won 25-15. Two cracking results this week so well done Captains and Selectors who get a lot of stick at times. If you want to join our happy little Club you can phone our Captain Steve Hindle on 966184360. Don’t worry if you have never played before we can lend you all the kit you need plus some coaching.

El Rancho Bowls Club. Our Wednesday VCL match was at Quesada, against the Tigers and all in all it was a close match, with both teams taking 3 rinks and the Tigers taking the overall shots by a small margin. A good away result for El Rancho. Ladies singles: Carolyn Harris 21-9. Gents singles: David Whitworth 6-21. Pairs: Jane Hamill and Stew Hamill 21-16. Triples: June Whitworth, John Skipper and Jim Gracie 21-9. Rinks: Pam Harris, Barry Bright, Brian Taylor and Shirley Edwards 12-16. Rinks: Bob Easthope, Brian Harris, Jan Bright and Richard Lee 8-23. Friday found the Buckskins playing host to Horadada Hawks, yet another close match, both teams taking 3 rinks and the Hawks taking the overall shots by another small margin, a good effort though. Pam Harris, Malc Elmore and Brian Harris 16-10. Jan Bright, Brian Yates and Shirley Edwards 13-16. Barry Bright, Diane Yates and Richard Lee 23-11. Dave Haynes, Bob Easthope and Jim Gracie 18-14. Marion Haynes, Jane Hamill and Stew Hamill 12-29. Graham Day, Rob Clark and John Skipper 10-20. ‘Pooling Together’ at Moore’s Bar

The Paul Cunningham Nurses were the benefactors of a 24 hour Pool Marathon held by Moores Bar recently which raised €2235 for the charity, all of which will contribute toward the cost of providing palliative care for the terminally ill. A total of 13 players took part in the event with a hardy 8 remaining on site for the full 24 hour period. The players themselves raised almost €1500 in sponsorship whilst the balance was donated from monies collected by a raffle and at the bar’s St George’s Day function held in April, at which local entertainer Andy Maloney also contributed his fee. Food for the players was provided by the adjoining Marinasol restaurant and La Taberna Bar while Alison Jane supplied the entertainment.

Organiser Phill Sutton was particularly complimentary of proprietors Paula and Martin for their help in making the event possible. In accepting the cheque from Phill, Assistant Coordinator Val Cheng said that she was absolutely delighted at the large amount that had been raised by Moores Bar and it’s players. She explained that the Paul Cunningham Nurses Charity, which is based in La Marina but which operates across the Costa Blanca South, will use the contribution wisely as it continues to provide high quality care to terminal prognosis patients in their own home, free of charge. Read more about the charity on its website at www.paulcunninghamnurses.com or contact the staff by phone on 966 790 363 or by email at info@paulcunninghamnurses.com

Carp R Us Round 5 of the Summer Series was fished on the Eden stretch of the River Segura. This necessitated a lot of hard work before the match could start to make sufficient fishable pegs, well done to everyone who helped. The match was won by Roy Buttress with 7.50kg caught using corn. Second was Steve Collins using pole feeder for 5.50kg. Tom Marshall was third with 5.30kg using corn and Jackie Breslin was fourth with 3.88kg. Considering this stretch is not used much now, the weights were quite good. Further info about the club can be found on its website www.carprus.weebly.com or on our Facebook page CarpR-Us Fishing Costa Blanca.

MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. ‘The Eyes have it’ So you are facing a difficult shot or you are coming to the end of your round and you have a particularly good score. How do you feel? If you are normal then your palms will be sweaty, your heart will feel like it is going to burst through your chest, your hands will be shaking, your arms feeling as heavy as lead and your mind will be full of so many thoughts at the same time, mainly negative. So what do you do about it? In previous articles I have explained how visualisation and simple deep breathing can and will help in such situations. This I will be covering again in forthcoming articles. However the first thing to understand is why you feel this way. Experts such as Craig Farnsworth believe that it is simply that your internal ENERGY SYSTEM is running out of control resulting in doubt, anxiety and loss of motor control. There is another mind clearing technique that you can use to control these feelings called the ‘laser eye shift’, which was pioneered in the 1970’s in the USA by Doctors Lee and Harrison. Whenever you experience the feelings of anxiety detailed above you should simply choose two objects a few feet apart, one in your left field of vision and the other in the right field of vision. While keeping your head still, shift your eyes between the two objects that you have chosen as fast as you can for five to ten seconds. Technically this is known as a ‘saccadic’ – rapid eye shift. On the golf course select vision targets that are easy to identify such as the ball markers on the tee or perhaps the ball and the hole on the putting green. How does this process work? Physiologically when conducting this act the mind has difficulty in conducting other tasks because your visual sensory system will lock you into the present and prevents you from processing thoughts in the past or the future. You can actually try this at home to see the technique in action. While sitting comfortably and in a relaxed position think about or

Monday 19th - Sunday 25th June, 2017 (Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Svcs). visualise in your mind some event that caused you anxiety recently. You should be able to feel those gut wrenching feelings deep inside of you. Now follow the laser eye shift technique as described above and then try again to regain and repeat those anxious feelings. You should find that they disappear altogether or exist at a much lower level of intensity. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. Another early shotgun start didn’t curtail scoring. Now used to the phenomenon the 42 members and 5 guests playing registered some fantastic returns. It was expected that the recent hollow tining of greens would have a negative effect, but this clearly wasn’t the case, members having to score at least 35 points to make 5th in each of the categories played. Only 10 made less than 30. Special mention should go to Robin Eastman and Darren Hancock who both hit 40 points, with the latter playing off a mere 6. The best score of the day, though, was posted by Brian Mulligan, a magnificent 41 points. Bronze Category: 5th Keith Stevenson (35), 4th Phil Birtwistle (36), 3rd Grattan Forber (38 on CB), 2nd Brian Butler (38 on CB), and 1st, Brian Mulligan with a fantastic score of 41 points. Silver Category: 5th Theo Boelhouwer (35), 4th Mike Fearnehough (36 on CB), 3rd Norman Cahill (36 on CB), 2nd Steve Davis (37) and 1st, Steve Belshaw with 38 points Gold Category: 5th Bjorn Pettersson (35), 4th Ivan Hanak (36 on CB), 3rd Barry Roehrig (36 on CB), 2nd Robin Eastman (40 on CB), and 1st, pipping Robin on count back, Darren Hancock, also with 40 points. The Abacus was won by Les Wilton. Nearest the pins on the par 3’s (open to all) went to Ivan Hanak (5), Billy Lane (7), Mike Maskell (12) and Darren Hancock (15). Best guest went to Geoff Jobson with an excellent score of 39, followed closely by runner-up Billy Lane (38) Our thanks go to the staff at Lo Romero golf course for their contribution to an enjoyable day. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Theo Boelhouwer a call on 694 494 824. Next week we will be at Las Colinas.

On Tuesday 13th June, 17 members competed in a 'Hidden Partners game. The ideal is for an even number of players in this game as in the event of an odd number, some adjustment is needed to be made at the end, with one player having two chances at winning. However, fortunately or unfortunately for one player, Lyn had to retire with a bad back, leaving an optimum number of 16. Get well soon. Over the past few weeks, there has been a glut of Holes-in-One with 4 in the previous 3 weeks. However, regular visitor from the U.K., Henry Mellor had not registered an 'Ace' prior to last week, when he achieved one in the Elche 'Away Day'. His stated ambition was to get one on his home course and he duly obliged on the 90 metre Hole 9. Talk about waiting for a bus and two coming at once. At the end of the competition, score cards were drawn to ascertain the winning pairing. Undoubted star was Kenton Wanty - excused from his school duties - who scored a superb 40 points, which, combined with Mike Williams' 31 points, scooped 1st prize. Nearest the Pin, Hole 1 - John Wilby, Hole 8 - Ray Housley. 3rd Place, David Swann, Martin Rickman 61 points on C/B. 2nd Place, John Wilby, Laurence Wanty 67 points. 1st Place, Kenton Wanty, Mike Williams 71 points. Picture Shows L. to R. David Swann, John Wilby, Laurence Wanty, Henry Mellor, Kenton Wanty, Mike Williams, Martin Rickman, Ray Housley. If anyone would like to join our Society, we play at El Plantio Golf Club on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. We use both courses - the Par 3 nine hole course and the main 18 hole course, so we cater for all abilities. The membership rates are very competitive, so call for more details. Anyone who wishes to play in the Society as a guest or join as a new member, contact Ian Henderson on 966 716 616 or 636 116 230. David Swann

‘TEAM TED’ take Wolfpack prize On Tuesday June 13th, it was time for our monthly Society Day, on this occasion playing for the annual “Captain vs Vice Captain” trophy. Two teams, “carefully" selected by the committee played a Texas Scramble at our home course, Campoamor. The weather was very hot and the greens a little sandy and slow following the recent hollow tining. Putting conditions therefore a little different from those we are used to. Sixteen players set out eager to enjoy the change of competition and to play a different format where everyone, irrespective of how they play on the day, is involved to the end. Play was swift and the competition was close - with the fourball comprising of Nigel Cotton, Bob Eno, Ray Phillips and Dave Margetson, playing for the Vice Captain, having by far the best day with a net score of 62.9 (three under par gross). In second place, challenging on behalf of the Captain, were Bryan Hirst, Ron Colclough, Bjorn Magnusson and Steve Lugger with a net score of 65.3. The race for the presti-

The weather forecast was for a very hot day and in the valley of La Marquesa it’s usually hotter but even these temperatures couldn’t match the high score of a certain Viking known as Sverre Sonesen. This particular Viking couldn’t stand the poor weather up there in Norway so embarked on a raid to La Marquesa where he not only secured a N.T.P. but also returned the highest score of the day to win the Gold category. On the downside his 43 pts. has lowered his handicap before his next game with us at Roda next week, there we will see what stamina he has. The course was in excellent condition following the greens maintenance and apart from the excessive heat, playing conditions were perfect. This course gets better every time we play it. gious trophy hinged on the remaining fourballs and after rechecking scorecards several times, the final result was victory for Ted Harris, Vice Captain, with a score of 129.1 points to the Captain’s 132.8. The second fourball on the winning side was made up of Ted, Geoff Hollingsworth, Joe Booth and John Clutton. Thanks to Peter Palmer, Dennis Fox, Alistair Kaye and Denis Warren for their noble efforts on behalf of the Captain. Ted continues the run of Vice Captain victories and gets the pleasure of polishing the trophy for the next 12 months. Thanks to all who took part, it was a very enjoyable day definitely enhanced by a change from the usual Stableford scoring.
