L ET THE B ATTLE C OMMENCE ! lthough he had the support of Ciudadanos on Thursday, for the second time in just three days, Orihuela mayor Emilio Bascuñana was forced to conduct a Council Plenary without members of his government team. Whilst that meeting was notable only for an outburst by the Deputy Mayor Rafael Almagro who lost his temper with Cambiemos Councillor Marta Guillén shouting "Leave me alone. I’ll do what I want!" it was Tuesday’s Emergency Council Meeting that was rather more significant, as five of the eleven PP councillors failed to attend, despite it being especially called.

From Page 1 Partido Popular in Crisis Miguel Angel Fernandez, meanwhile, who was appointed as the Councillor for Planning less than two weeks ago, informed the mayor that he would not be attending due to his vested interest in the subject to be discussed. It just so happens that his wife is the lawyer for Urbanizadora Villamartín SL, one of the largest developers on the coast. So what was the subject causing all the fuss? If I said that it all revolved around ‘property’ and ‘finance’ I’m sure there would be no surprise. When initially obtaining the agreement to build 2600 homes in PAU 7, close to Campoamor Golf on the Orihuela Costa, it was agreed that the developer, Urbanizadora Villamartín SL, (where have I heard that name before), would construct 650 houses that would be categorised as Official and Protected (VPO). The cost of their construction would be met by central government and on completion they would be handed over to the Orihuela Council, via the Generalitat, to be disposed of as Social Housing. As a result of the agreement the price of the building licence was significantly reduced.

Mayor Emilio Bascuñana argued, however, that social housing was not needed on the Orihuela Costa and he called last Tuesday’s Emergency Plenary, on the very final day that the agreement could be modified, in order to approve the motion that their usage be changed back to the original purpose, their sale on the open market at full price, thereby benefitting the builder who, as a result, would realise far larger profits. It is understood that all of the absent councillors, with the exception of Fernandez, whose wife we have mentioned earlier, objected to the motion, insisting that if it were adopted there should be some manner of compensatory agreement with the taxpayers of the Orihuela Costa, perhaps the building of a library, a theatre or whatever. But as a result, the councillors Damaso Aparicio, Sofía Álvarez and Noelia Grao, all failed to attend the meeting while Begoña Cuartero went off on her upcountry trip. So with the three Ciudadanos councillors stating that they would abstain, and with the PSOE intending to vote against the motion, the Session was eventually declared void. Juan Ignacio Lopez-Bas, the spokesman for Ciudadanos, was extremely angry saying that the

internal struggle within the PP is damaging the running of the city while Carolina Gracia, the PSOE spokesperson, claimed that the four missing councillors no longer trust the mayor. She also questioned the wisdom of the mayor in his recent appointment of Miguel Angel Fernandez as Councillor responsible for Planning, whilst his wife represented one of the largest developers in the area. No conflict there then, Mr Bascuñana! So with the Presidency of the party due to be decided today (Monday), many say that the divisions within the Partido Popular are much wider and the engine is suddenly beginning to splutter. It is well documented that the likely winner of today’s vote, Damaso Aparicio, is not a favourite son of Emilio Bascuñana, thus, if Aparicio is successful in his Presidency bid, it will be interesting to see on which side of the fence the struggle for power eventually comes down, especially with increasing sounds of discord in the ranks over the mayor’s failure to deal effectively with his councillors. The crisis of Mayor Bascuñana’s credibility within the PP seems, once again, to be coming to a head.

Immerse yourself in Orihuela’s History and Colour

N

ext weekend the historic town of Orihuela comes alive with the yearly Moors and Christians celebrations with yet more colourful parades through the streets as thousands of people from far and wide converge on the city to celebrate this most important fiesta. Orihuela is the perfect setting for this traditional Spanish Fiesta as the streets of the historic quarter are saturated in colour and noise as the parades and events take place. After the official presentation you'll see the size and splendour of the various processions climaxing in the Grand Parade of the Moors and then the Christians. The first celebration took place in 1974 and over the intervening years the ceremonies and the acts have become more elaborate and far more audacious. The Fiesta de la Reconquista commemorates the battles for control of the land between the Moors

and Christians as solemn parades, a number of mock battles featuring a great deal of noise and explosions and many other events take place in the city streets. The symbol of Orihuela, the black eagle like bird, known as the 'La Gloriosa Ensena del Oriol' features highly in the programme, and even has its own parade! Everything gets underway on Sunday 9th July at 19:30 with the Parade of the Abanderadas & Flower Offering in honour of the patron saints (Justa and Rufina) starting at la Glorieta Gabriel Miró and finishing at the Cathedral before moving to the Plaza del Ayuntamiento where the dignitaries will be presented on the town hall balcony. You will be able to see a full programme of all the parades and details for transport to the city from the Orihuela Costa in next week’s Leader Newspaper. See ad on opposite page.

Housing construction continues to accelerate on the Coast One of the largest developments on the coast in Lomas de Cabo Roig

T

he construction sector has maintained its steady recovery in the province of Alicante and is now growing at an even faster rate. Constructor’s applications to launch new projects have increased in recent months, especially in coastal municipalities, such as Guardamar, Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa and Pilar de la Horadada. The towns of Torrevieja and Orihuela continue to lead the way with new housing construction, not only in 2017, but also during the last three years. What the data indicates is that the recovery has now been consolidated and is beginning to accelerate. According to experts, 2017 has so far been very productive in the real estate sector. Some of them say that they are likely to achieve the same figures that they did back in 2004.

The most recent study by the company TINSA, on the situation here on the coast, published on 14 June, shows that in our region, the sector is "in a clear recovery", despite a slow-down with the rate of home purchases by Britons following Brexit which is being offset in part by the increase in purchases by Swedes, Norwegians, Belgians and Russians who are now buying houses in the area in increasing numbers. The company also states in their report that in the Orihuela Costa "about 120 homes have been reactivated, with new product being built mainly for the holiday market According to the TINSA report, based on data provided by the Ministry of Public Works, new construction applications in Orihuela Costa in 2015 were 448, while in 2016 they rose to 1,038, an increase of 132%, a Growth much higher than that of Guardamar, with 66%, Torrevieja, with 27%, and Pilar de la Horadada, with an 8% increase in the number of applications for new work. Faced with this data on the Oriol coast, the there is little new construction activity in Orihuela city and the districts, not only during 2017 but also in recent years. In fact, the licenses granted by the Department of Urbanism are practically all for promotions on the Orihuela Costa, according to the councillor, with new licenses in the city only given and are for minor works, "generally reforms.

Mexican Company to redevelop Beach shower unit for people Benidorm’s Avda Mediterráneo with reduced mobility

T

Esteyco-Guía Consultores TPP are the only company to have submitted a tender for the redevelopment of Benidorm’s main thoroughfare, the Avenida Mediterráneo, as a result of which, on Wednesday, they were invited to present their detailed proposals as they enter into formal negotiations with the City Council.

It is expected that the project will not be awarded immediately, thereby allowing the city planners time to study the detailed plans. Once the planners are satisfied that they fully understand the proposal the documentation will then be passed to the finance committee which will then consider the economic offer. If the tender complies with the council’s specifications the company will then be awarded the contract for the first phase of the work to be carried out adjacent to the Plaza de la Hispanidad and Avenida de Europa. Esteyco has 45 years of experience in the sector and has carried out major projects in 11 countries. Including Chile’s largest wind farm, the tunnels of the Plaça de Les Glories in Barcelona as well as the urban renewal of the island of La Manga. They have also worked on major undertakings in Colombia, Holland, Belgium, Qatar and Paraguay. Once they obtain the award, the company will then have a further period of six months to plan the full project along the Avenida del Mediterráneo, of which two months will be allowed for the draft of the basic scheme followed by up to two months of construction time. The intention of the government is to begin work before the end of the year.

Guardamar to offer guided visits to Rábita Califal Guardamar’s Department of Culture have said that they will open the historic Rábita Califal Islamic settlement on two days a week for summer visitors. The announcement was made by Pilar Gay, the Guardamar Councillor for Culture, at a press briefing on Saturday morning. She said that the town is keen to promote the tenth century site as a tourist attraction, which will be greatly enhanced with the addition of the new Visitors Centre, which should itself be ready by the middle of 2018. This will be the first time that the municipality will open the site on a regular basis although as the councillor explained visits can currently be taken on the Tourist Train excursion “The Path of History.” The revised objective, however, is to offer a more complete excursion. The councillor also announced that the department will also be offering an activity called “the Night of astrology,” at which astronomers will explain to visitors just why the Rábita Califal site was chosen to

The activity will include various activities for children and for seniors and will take place during the month of August, although the specifics are still to be determined. According to the municipal tourist website Guardamar’s historic Phoenician city, La Fonteta, dating from the 8th to the 6th centuries BC, cannot be opened for the time being as there are outstanding consolidation works that are still to be carried. Consequently, some of the structures are still in danger of collapse and must be

shored up before visitors can be allowed into the grounds. In order to guarantee its protection, the Ministry of Culture has asked the Generalitat for 866,125 euros, which will allow the conservation work to be carried out, as well as a further 309.860 euros for the construction of the Visitors Centre. According to the director general of Culture and Heritage, Carmen Amoraga, the dune recovery project will start later this year with the work on the Visitors Centre, which will last three months, scheduled for the first quarter of 2018.

Santa Pola Police Chief Arrested The Economic and Fiscal Crime Unit (UDEF) arresed Santa Pola’s local police chief, José Miguel Zaragoza, on Wednesday along with two serving police officers and five businessmen from the company Redován Almacenes Riera for alleged embezzlement and fraud. The complaint originated from the Santa Pola council itself after staff had detected irregularities with the supply of uniforms and clothing for both the Policia Local and the Protección Civil. This follows the arrest of the former councillor for security Antonio Pérez Huertas, who was transferred into the jurisdiction of Alicante. It is understood that one of the policemen detained is Roque Alemañ, president of the Santa

Pola Athletics Club. The arrests took place on Wednesday morning after which Zaragoza also moved to Alicante Police Station whilst the businessmen from Almacenes Riera were taken to the police station in Orihuela. A further police officer was arrested on Friday. Zaragoza, the chief of police, is brother of the former Santa Pola mayor and the PP Provincial deputy Miguel Zaragoza. It is understood that after making statements all of the individuals were charges with various counts of fraud after which they were released on bail. Investigating agents are said to be looking at delivery notes and documentation related to the contracting of clothing and equipment for the Local Police and the Civil Protección between 2012 and 2017.

Coordinated security for coastal towns The Councillors for Security and the Chiefs of Police from several coastal towns held a meeting in Horadada on Thursday morning in which they discussed a coordinated response to security and surveillance along the southern Costa Blanca and Costa Calida. Representatives from Pilar de la Horadada, Orihuela, San Pedro del Pinatar, and Torrevieja atended the discussions which Pilar’s Councillor for Citizen Security, José Tomás Saura, said was necessary to "maintain contact between all police forces and increase security on the beaches." Saura said the main objective was to "unite our forces to ensure that all tourists and visitors can enjoy and relax our beaches and other facilities in complete safety during their summer holidays." He emphasised the need for all of the forces represented to "maintain contact between all police forces which could only have a positive effect on security.” The Chiefs of the municipal police forces and of the Civil Guard confirmed their intention to coordinate and transfer information between the services to deter all types of criminal activities. They will also work together to carry out preventive work with daily police presence on all of the beaches. They will also provide a simple handout and information which will be distributed extensively to the entire populace so that everyone is aware of the action they should take and the numbers to call in the case of an emergency.

HELP at Home for those who need it most! The latest organisation that has been generous enough to make a sizeable donation to the HELP at Home CB Community bus appeal was the Campoverde Theatre Group last week, which presented a cheque for 600 euros to the local charity, proceeds from their musical theatre supper show ‘The Good Old Days’ which they performed at The Fiesta Plaza in early May. One of the longest running theatre and drama groups in the area, the popular players are certainly not sitting back and relaxing in the summer sun as they are already preparing for their next supper show, ‘A Magical Murder Mystery Tour’ which will take place at the same venue, 27-29 September, more details of which we will have in due course. Meanwhile with the ‘Bus Appeal’ now topping 22,000 euro, Help at Home CB are not too far away from achieving their total. Executive member Eileen Randall said “there is an urgent requirement for such a vehicle in the area, one that can provide much needed transport to those with mobility problems, transporting them to or from medical or hospital appointments or even shopping, perhaps with the occasional day out. We are close to achieving our target and in the not too distant future we are determined to have such a vehicle on the road.” Whilst similar vehicles do exist on the Costa Blanca the major advantage of the HELP at Home CB vehicle is that it will be available, not just to their own members, which is very much the case with other groups and organisations, but it will also be at the disposal of any member of the public with mobility problems that requires its use. “We are now on the final lap,” she continued “we are talking to car dealerships, as well as discussing the specifics of exactly what it needs to have fitted. We are also now looking out for suitable drivers, so that we can establish an

appropriately trained team of individuals, who will be able to provide this important service in our name.” Of course while the appeal continues so do the day to day activities of this much relied on charity, with their shop in Playa Flamenca, a branch in Quesada, their very worthwhile and productive house clearances, work within the local community, carers and befrienders, as well as their recent involvement with Caritas, to whom they now make regular donations of foodstuffs, toiletries and consumables. Indeed, as well as the donations for the shop, the board tell me they are now actively seeking donations of dry goods, tinned goods, baby

goods, toiletries and the like, for the Caritas charity, which they will be delighted to store at the Playa Flamenca shop and to pass on to caritas, which, on the Orihuela Costa alone, is still supporting in excess of a hundred families on a daily basis. One additional, but very current, project that the charity has now undertaken, is the provision of support to the Orihuela Orphanage, Amigos de San Jose Obrero. This children’s home cares for 67 youngsters between the ages of 6 and 18, and has at least one local patron, the popular ocal entertainer and dedicated fundraiser Stevie Spit. HELP at Home CB recently delivered a van load of furniture and other goods to the home which, with little help from the state, relies almost entirely on charitable donations. They are currently seeking help with books, clothing and shoes for the children, which will help enormously on their return to school in September, so if you are a local company looking to support a ‘child related charity’ speak to the ladies at the Playa Flamenca shop and they will be delighted to advise how you might best become involved. As it continues to expand the charity is also looking for suitable office accommodation close to it’s Playa Flamenca shop, which can be used as a ‘drop in’ or an ‘information’ centre. It will ideally have a little additional space that can provide a little storage. And in terms of it’s most appreciated asset….personnel! Volunteers are urgently required to work in the office or the shop, to work as drivers, befrienders or fundraisers. So if you can spare a morning a week, or even just the occasional couple of hours, especially during the summer months, please get in touch with the centre by calling: 965 328 794, by email: charitycentre.helpathomecb@gmail.com or by simply dropping in during any weekday morning.

Orihuela Parking contractor seeks additional spaces The Orihuela Parking concessionaire Setex Aparki, who won the contract to operate the service in the blue zone, city centre, 18 months ago has said that the 600 allocated parking spaces are not enough for it to maximise its profitability. Although not specifying the number, the company have asked the Orihuela council to increase the number of parking spaces in which it can install additional meters. The request was revealed last week by the spokesman for Cambiemos Orihuela, Karlos Bernabe, who has asked the Councillor for Infrastructure to provide the exact detail of the Setex Aparki demand. However the City Council say that they are waiting for reports from a number of different municipal departments areas such as the Policía Local as they gather information which will enable them to deal with the request. The company argue their case, saying that their ability to collect parking fees has been disrupted by the activity of the Saturday market, the encroachment of restaurant terraces and the placement of rubbish bins, all of which means that they are not achieving the expected economic profitability. Bernabe though, states that last year Setex Aparki invoiced the council for 508,000 euros. This figure, he recalled, is 38,000 euros more than the amount provided for by the study of economic impact which was submitted with the tender documentation when the company applied for the original contract. This study anticipated an annual revenue for the company of 470,000 euros which they have well exceeded. For this reason Cambiemos consider that an increase in the number of blue zone parking places would not be justified. The Cambiemos Orihuela spokesman also told the government (PP and C's) that they should be taking steps to improve mobility and parking in the municipality, such as the promotion of cycling and the provision of additional parking for bicycles as well as the improvement of the bus service from outlying villages and districts so that the public have the alternative to use public rather than their own private transport.

This article is one of a monthly series about digital photography, written for The Leader by David Stokes.

CHOOSING A CAMERA These days there is a huge selection of digital cameras for us to choose from, and in this article I hope to shed some light on how to go about deciding the one that is right for you. In addition to your phone or tablet, there are essentially three kinds of digital camera – Compact, Bridge and DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex). Each has their different benefits and drawbacks. Compact Cameras The big advantage of these cameras is their convenience and price. They fit in a pocket or handbag, and are very light, and at the lower end are the cheapest cameras on the market. Quality of image has improved greatly over recent years, but they do have tiny sensors (the digital equivalent of film), which means that whilst they take a good picture in good conditions, they are often poor performers in difficult light. However, they tend to be very good at close-ups. The biggest disadvantage to my mind is the lack of a viewfinder, which means you are relying on the LCD screen on the back to see what you are pointing at. This can make it very difficult to use in bright sunlight. Bridge Cameras Bridge cameras are so called because they are a halfway house between compact cameras and the larger DSLR’s. They will fit in a largish handbag, but not a pocket. Because they are bigger they have a larger sensor, and hence should produce a better quality image than the smaller sensors in a compact camera. Cost-wise, they are usually a little bit more expensive than the compacts, but cheaper than most DSLR’s. They often have a viewfinder. DSLR Cameras These are the most expensive of the three kinds of camera, starting at around €400 . They have larger sensors than compact or bridge cameras, and therefore produce the highest quality images. Due to the ability to change lenses to suit different situations, they are the most flexible type of camera and hence can be set to take great photos in almost any circumstance. The disadvantage of them is their size and weight compared to compacts and bridge cameras, which is the price you have to pay for the ability to take the best photos. There are a few DSLR’s about that are relatively light, for example the Panasonic Lumix G range, and these produce good results. However, if you buy a DSLR you will want to add lenses and other kit later on, and of all the DSLR makes, Canon and Nikon have the widest range of lenses and other peripherals such as flash. Also, third party manufacturers such as Tamron and Sigma always make their products to fit Canon and Nikon cameras.

I have so far described the general choices before you. Your budget and quality desired will obviously determine which type of camera you should look at. But how do you go about choosing the particular camera to buy? Only you can decide which camera you are most comfortable with, but I can give you a few useful pointers: Compact Cameras Pixel count is not everything. If you see a camera with 15 million pixels for €100, and next to it one with 18 million pixels for €110, you could be forgiven for thinking you should get the latter because for only €10 extra you get 3 million more pixels. In truth, the size and quality of the sensor is the key issue on quality, not how many pixels. Indeed, due to electrical interference too many pixels packed on a small sensor can result in poorer quality. My DSLR has only 12 million pixels, and takes far better pictures than any compact.

there is very little difference between models as to how much zooming is done optically. However, there can be a wider difference with bridge cameras. Optical zoom means it is all done by the lens, which means the more the lens extends the greater the optical zoom (rather like a telescope). To enable you to zoom in further, the camera crops the image, so you are only looking at the centre of the picture the lens actually sees (similar to when you use the zoom slider looking at a photo on the computer). Hence, with digital zoom you only record the pixels, in the centre and spread them over the whole, meaning a reduction in resolution. Therefore, all other things being This article by David Stokes might help to explain which is the right kind of camera for you

Buttons and wheels are easier than menus. A camera with no buttons may look sleeker, but having to use endless levels of menus is time consuming, and annoying, when people are waiting while you get your camera set. In particular, try to buy a camera with a mode wheel for selecting the shooting mode (portrait, landscape, sport etc., as well as the manual and semi-manual modes). See the picture. Manual and semi-manual modes If you feel that you would like to learn more about photography than just using the auto and scene modes, get one with manual, aperture and shutter modes (M, A and S in the picture). Check customer reviews before deciding Unless you go to a specialist camera shop you cannot rely on getting a truly informed opinion from a salesperson. Photography magazines do reviews on the latest cameras, but they are often far too technical and nitpicky for most people. It is worth taking a note of the models you are considering in the shop and searching on the Internet on sites like Amazon where there is usually a selection of reviews by ordinary users. Slow focusing Some cameras are slow to focus (Fuji and Nikon Coolpix, amongst others, have been guilty of this). Look for comments about this when looking at reviews, because it often prevents you from getting the perfect picture in a moving situation, and the delay in firing can cause blur due to camera shake.

equal, a camera with 4x optical and 14x digital zoom, would produce better zoomed in photos, than one with 3x optical and 15x digital. Slow focusing The comments for compact cameras can also apply to some bridge cameras. DSLR Cameras You are spending more money, so looking for good advice via websites and camera magazines is that much more important. Canon and Nikon are the biggest sellers these days, but in the case of both, some models are slated and others get highly rated. Consider the buttons and wheels as for compacts and bridge cameras, and go for the one that feels the most comfortable to handle. Is there a good selection of extras available? You are bound to want to add lenses, flashes etc. later on. Often third party items are just as good or better, and maybe cheaper, than the manufacturer’s own products. Check the prices and availability from makers such as Tamron and Sigma for items for the camera you are looking at. They all, however, will make versions of all their items for Nikon and Canon cameras. Where can you buy your camera locally? The only specialist camera shop that I know of in this area is Imagen in Torreveija, situated in Calle Ramon Gallud, on a corner opposite Bargain Books. You can see a wider variety of models in Carrefour or Media Markt and Saturn. You can also buy on line from Amazon and Pixmania.es.

Bridge Cameras Buttons and wheels Bridge cameras, being bigger than compacts, generally will have a mode button on the top, but the same consideration applies as for compacts – the more changes that can be made without recourse to menus the better. Optical Zoom is better than digital Due to the slimness of compacts,

‘Letters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

he recent decision of the Canary Islands’ Government to impose a tax on sugar-based food and drinks purchased in the Canary Islands is a response to serious concerns about the very high obesity levels on the islands, which is the third highest region in the world. Some have claimed that Canarian obesity levels may be linked to genetic factors and not over consumption of sugary foods and drinks. Recent research evidence adds another interesting dimension to this discussion. Aboriginal Berber people called Guanches were the first settlers of the Canary Islands, migrating to these islands around 1000 BC. Following the Spanish conquest of these islands, those Guanches that survived starvation during a period that many historians now perceive as genocide were quickly absorbed by their Spanish conquerors. As many visitors to these islands will become aware once they leave the beaches and tourist centres, elements of the rich Guanche culture still survive. Canarian traditions and customs, such as the whistled language of Silbo, practiced on the island of La Gomera, is one example of this rich and varied heritage. Many secrets of the Guanche past remain hidden and we can only speculate about the life and times of this ancient people. However, one recent discovery tells us much more about their culture, burial practice, health, physique and dental health. In 2016, one Guanche mummy and three Egyptian mummies were

removed from Spain’s National Archaeological Museum in Madrid and taken for a detailed scan that would hopefully yield much more information than previously known. Although the mummified body of the Guanche showed many similarities with its Egyptian counterparts, the main difference was that the Egyptians removed the brains and internal organs, whilst the Guanches left the organs of their dead intact at the time of mummification. Remembering that these bodies were preserved more than 2000 years ago, the results are fascinating. Two of the Egyptian mummies were found to be women, one of whom was The Guanche bones "tell" the sex, age and stature of the Guanches, an average of 1.71 pregnant. La Marina Report by Barry Latham Didn’t start the week off too well as La Marina TS lost to Quesada DS five nil. Dave Hadaway and Dave Taylor lost to Derek Sale and Terry Morgan and also losing were Peter Parsons and Tom Spencer. Still another two games to play. The last VCL game promised to be a cracker …and it was. La Marina needed ten points to stay up and Vistabella Saxons wanted five points. It was close throughout with the Singles finishing first as usual. This week it was Jan Parsons being the Star winning 21- 7 while Pete lost by a similar score. The Pairs was a close fought game all the way through with Margaret Finlayson and Tom Spencer winning all the way until the 17th end when they dropped a four only to pick up a three on the last end to get a draw. The Triples was a little easier but a good game to play in as our opponents clawed their way back picking up six shots on the last six ends. Thankfully, Barry and Wendy Latham and Carol Smith held on to win by three. The two Rinks each had great games. Barry Sadler, Dave Taylor, Roger Stacey and Dave O’Sullivan also dropped a four on the 17th end but got the necessary two on the last to secure a win by one shot. Our other rink again went very close everything coming down to the last wood on the last end. Unfortunately on this occasion it went to the Visitors. Counting it all up La Marina 90 shots and Vistabella 88 making the overall score 9 points to 5 in favour of La Marina. Can’t ask for any more than that. Well done to all who played in a great game for the last game of the season in the VCL.

Monte Mar Bowls & Social Club Sponsored by The Belfry, The Pub, Bowling Abroad and Avalon VCL League - Lords v La Siesta. A good result at La Siesta winning on four rinks and drawing on one. And the drawing rink Sheila Roberts, Mike Farrelly and skip Dave Melville. Shots 104-99 La Siesta. Pts 11-3 La Siesta. Hurricane Division - Torros v Greenlands Gladiators. The Torros were up against Greenlands Gladiators away. We managed to win on three rinks but lost on shots. Well done to the three winning rinks. Shots 95-104 Greenlands Gladiators. Pts 6 – 8 Greenlands VCL League - Monte Mar Lords v San Miguel. Last match away to San Miguel only managed a win on one rink and a draw on one rink. Well done to the winning rink of Rowena Good, John Caiger, Harry Dobson and skip Val Hignett, and the drawing rink of Denise Ashberry and Bill Young. Shots 98 – 115 San Miguel. Pts 3 – 11. San Miguel Golf Society at La Manga. June 28th, 2017

Thirty-five members were joined by 4 guests for SMGS’s annual visit to La Manga to play a stableford competition. In excellent condition (the exception being some of the bunkers), as one would expect of a venue with La Manga’s history and continued reputation, the South Course proved testing for many. The two main reasons for this were probably the course’s length and some difficult approaches, not helped by an ever strengthening wind which by round’s end wasn’t far removed from being a gale. As during our previous visit, scores got better as one went up through the categories, lower handicappers generally dealing much better with the course and conditions. As if to highlight the point the day’s best rounds of 37 points

MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. ‘TROUBLE SHOTS’ No matter how hard you practise you will be confronted on the golf course by interesting circumstances caused by outside influences or just plain bad luck. How do you react? Do you moan and curse your bad luck, give up and wish that you were not on the golf course at all or do you make the best of the challenge facing you and try to get the best result that you can? If you are armed with adequate information on how the ball will react in these circumstances you will be better prepared from a mental perspective to play the shot with more confidence. Let us consider just a few of these interesting scenarios: Ball in a sanded divot on the fairway You will be left scratching your head when a perfect drive finishes in a divot but you must have a positive outlook on a negative situation. The sanded divot is just a mini bunker on the fairway and the shot should be executed as a bunker shot. Take one extra club, swing smoothly, play the ball slightly further back in the stance, swing slightly steeper on the backswing and concentrate on keeping the lower half of your body quiet through the shot. Mud on the ball Even if you have played the game of golf for a long time you should not question the fairness of this situation. However the key to handling this event is to understand how the mud affects ball flight. As a rule of thumb, the ball will go in the opposite direction to the mud. If the mud is on the left of the ball it will tend to go to the right and visa versa The added complication is that the harder you hit the ball the more it spins and will veer even further off line. The answer is to allow for the change in flight with your alignment, take one extra club, swing smoothly and do not quit on the shot. Partially submerged ball in a water hazard If your ball is in a hazard and under water take your medicine, the penalty shot and get on with the game. However when the ball is only partly submerged, you will have an

Our thanks go to the staff at La Manga golf course for their contribution to an enjoyable day. (Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Svcs). urge to play it from the hazard but this usually end with you soaking wet and the ball still in the water. It is not the most difficult shot if you apply the correct technique. Take off your shoes and socks, put on the waterproof suit and play the shot like an explosion bunker shot. Open the stance and club face, position the ball forward in the stance, hinge the wrists early on the backswing, focus on a spot one inch behind the ball and swing 50% harder than normal and do not quit on the shot. If you follow these simple instructions the shots will not appear quite as daunting and can even appear fun at times. T.M.G.S. @ El Plantío 28/6/17 32 members travelled along the N332 towards the blistering heat of El Plantio. We couldn’t have been more wrong, yes the temps were in the mid to high 30’s but the green fee including the buggy was certainly lower at a very attractive price of just €30 per player including the buggy, it must be the cheapest golf on the Costas! OK so the fairways weren’t exactly US Open standard but we have seen them in worse condition and paid more, the greens were a little on the slow side but more than acceptable. Thank you El Plantio you gave us a nice surprise, usually it’s a nasty one from the local courses. Although the course played well, the scoring suffered a little from the extremely high winds so any player who managed 30 pts. should not have been disappointed with his game. Results: N.T.P.’s hole 7 A. Rickers, hole 9 Nada, hole 14 G. Sorby, hole 18 Nada. The 2’s pot was rolled over from last week and contained a very nice €60 this was shared between Alan Rickers, Alan Rixson and G. Hagan. Unusually we didn’t have any visitors with us this week. Bronze category; 3rd G. Hagan 30 pts. 2nd M. Myhrvold 33 pts. 1st R. Nilsen 34 pts. Silver category, 3rd L. Jorung 30 pts. 2nd J. Hettrick 32 pts. 1st A. Rixson 32 pts. on L/H. Gold category, 3rd J. Carp R Us Fishing News Carp-R-Us travelled to Blanca for round seven of the Summer Series. This is one of the most beautiful places we fish but unfortunately the carp and barbel seem to have disappeared or, at least, have become virtually impossible to catch. Of the eight members fishing only three had any fish, all small bleak caught close-in on maggot. First was Steve Fell with 1.66kg, second was Steve Collins with 1.30kg and third was Tom Marshall with 1.28kg. To give an idea of the size of fish, the winner caught over 200 fish. The venue has never been particularly prolific although it could be counted on to produce some larger fish but this is two matches in a row there that only bleak have been caught. Further information about the club can be found on its website www.carprus.weebly.com or on our Facebook page Carp-R-Us Fishing Costa Blanca.

Spain thrash Belgium 7-0 at Pinatar Arena Barcelona’s Marta Torrejón set a new national record at the Pinatar Arena achieving her 73rd national cap.

Fire damages Vicente Garcia Stadium Firefighters were called to a blaze at the Vicente Garcia municipal football stadium on Thursday after an outbreak was reported in the main stand. The fire occurred just before 5.30 pm with a tender from Torrevieja arriving on the scene within about ten minutes. Located in the main stand it seems that most of the damage was confined to the area normally occupied by the press, although with the stadium cur-

rently closed because of structural problems in the same area it is thought that the damage suffered won’t add too much to the problems that already exist. Recent reports suggest that CD Torrevieja are hoping to return to the stadium for the coming season, after an enforced 18 month absence at the Nelson Mandela facility, however that now looks to be increasingly unlikely.

In their final warm-up game on Thursday prior to Euro 2017, and in front of over 1500 spectators, the Spanish women's team has beaten Belgium 7-0 as they prepare to travel to the Netherlands. The national team dominated from the outset in an especially emotional match for the captain Marta Torrejón. The Barcelona player set a new national record at the Pinatar Arena achieving her 73rd national cap.

Spain’s goal scorers were Alexia Putellas (2) 2-0, Vicky Losada, Mariona, Amanda, Olga García and Mari Paz. Spain will be based at Doetinchem where they will feature in Group D against England, Scotland and Portugal. They kick off their tournament on Wednesday 19 July against Portugal at the Stadion De Vijverberg home of Dutch first division club De Graafschap

Torrevieja team take National Football Gold Well done to the Torrevieja team of “Electricidad Perseo” who last Sunday in Oviedo were proclaimed the Champions of Spain at Mini-Football. Held at La Castañera sports complex in the city of Oviedo a total of 32 teams, involving over 500 players from all over Spain, took part in the event. The torrevejense team "Electricidad Perseo", coached by Enrique Sánchez and that trains at the Gabriel Samper, beat BCP Malaga in the final by a convinving 3-1 scoreline. The salineros will now travel to Slovenia in September to play in the Champions League alongside 31 of Europe’s very best teams. Qualification from that tournament could see them playing in the world-wide finals later in the year in Tunisia.

ROCKETS GOLF AT ALTORREAL Long trip down to Mercia for our June away day, but looking at the course when we arrived it was a picture. Very depleted this week. Do not know if it was the travel or the 38 degrees that put them off. They missed a beautiful course with exceptionally fast greens, getting back to the condition we knew this course was in years ago. The Gold Category was won by Dom Downey with Larry Lambe taking second place. He said he was Speechless!! Rodney Smith finished in 3rd place.
