O NE POLICEMAN FOR 30,000 RESIDENTS A
s CompromĂs calls for more Local Police in Orihuela the Leader Newspaper can reveal that last Sunday, on the whole of the Orihuela Costa, the security of its 30,000 residents was in the hands of just one officer from the Policia Local. And now CompromĂs Orihuela has said that they have had enough as it demanded that the municipal government increase the number of Police operating in the municipality. They have asked that the 2017 budgets include sufficient funding which is especially earmarked for this purpose. "The city council must be able to guarantee the security of its residents, across the entire urban area, the districts and the coast," said spokesman
Martin Borislavov. He also confirmed that recently, in all of the Orihuela Costa there was just one policeman on duty, which is completely unacceptable." Continued on Page 2

From Page 1 Orihuela Costa Policing Borislavov said that "the strength of the municipal police is insufficient to cover all the territory of Orihuela. This ensures that the agents operate with extra stress because they cannot provide all the coverage and support that they want, which endangers everybody living within the municipality. Policing in the Orihuela Municipality is in a “potentially perilous state” as poor leadership, resulting in government inaction and lethargy, lead to investigations being shelved, vulnerable victims being let down and dozens of dangerous suspects remaining at large. In the case of the Oriolano coast the secretary of Compromis said that "during the year there are usually two police patrols, and
the logical thing would be that in summer the number of agents is increased to cater for the influx of tourists into the area. But the opposite happens, because the officers know that it is going to be a much busier period they actually book their leave and go away on holiday so that when there is a greater population on the coast we have fewer policemen." Is it any surprise, therefore, that whilst the numbers of illegal traders and even drug sellers on the Orihuela Costa is increasing, with an overnight strength of just two officers supporting its 30,000 residents, the police are unable to cope. In addition, Borislavov has assured that "the problem also extends to the districts. Residents of San Bartolomé have told us their concern, since
they tell us that they only occasionally see policemen in the hamlet, and on the occasions that they are called to attend an incident they take an absolute age to arrive. Compromís has said that the government must do more to ensure the security of its residents, particularly at this especially busy time. They need to ensure that the Local Police are sufficiently strengthened “to be able to adequately cover all the territory of Oriol." The mayor and his government team still have more work to do to ensure they are providing the level of service that this community expects and deserves, and indeed that this community pays for. At the moment it is just one of too many areas where the general public are being let down.

Why not try a beer to quench your summer thirst Carolina Perez, a nutritionist at Quirónsalud Hospital Torrevieja, says that beer lowers the risk of developing cardiovascular disease
W
hen the heat increases so does the amount of liquid that we consume and no longer do we drink just water to quench our thirst. There are a variety of beverages to which we turn to hydrate and enjoy throughout the day, in our leisure time with family and friends. But many of us don’t know how the most popular summer drinks can contribute and benefit our health. Beer, one of the most widely consumed beverages in Spain, lowers the risk of developing cardiovascular disease by increasing good cholesterol (HDL) and polyphenols. It protects against neurodegenerative diseases and improves bone health because it contains silicon. It also has an anti-inflammatory and antibiotic characteristics thanks to hops, one of its essential components. It is also highly recommended for athletes, according to Carolina Perez, nutritionist at Quirónsalud Hospital Torrevieja. "Consumption of a moderate amount of beer after intense activity helps to ensure rapid rehydration and helps to prevent muscle aches. Beer for its taste, aroma and being carbonated, especially served cold, is recognised as being better than water in situations where thirst is not a factor, as it is 2% of dehydration that helps with sports performance, but it is not significant enough to combat thirst." Slush, one of the most popular summer drinks, a cold drink served while still crystallized. Sorbet, however, is halfway between slush and ice cream, it contains less fat than ice cream, but more sugar. The main component of slush is water, whose presence represents about 85-90% of its composition. Therefore, its calorific content is not very high, around 60-70 calories per 100 millilitres. In its preparation no fats are used (unlike ice creams), so there is no added fat or cholesterol. However, its consumption should not abused because, although there is no fat, they do have significant amounts of sugar. The absence of fat and cholesterol in such drinks can be a positive for people with high blood cholesterol levels who want to indulge occasionally. However, it is important that the consumption of these products occurs only occasionally so as to avoid excess sugar in the diet. Another irresistible drink is horchata, consumed in two versions, liquid and slush. The basic ingredients are water, tiger nuts and sugar. Horchata is a rich sugary, energy drink with healthy fats, highly recommended for all ages but especially for patients with cardiovascular disease who do not suffer from being overweight. It also has a significant calcium content, much needed during periods of breastfeeding, pregnancy and growth in children. It is low in sodium and high in potassium which makes it very
suitable for hypertensive patients. It aids in the recovery of diarrheal diseases as a result of its astringent properties and having no cholesterol, gluten or lactose, it is suitable for those with intolerances. However, horchata is not advisable for diabetic patients because of its high sugar content. Gazpacho, another of the kings of summer, retains all the nutritional benefits of each and every one of its ingredients without suffering any degradation by heat that is caused by cooking "Vitamin C in peppers and tomato, vitamin E in the Tomato’s and extra virgin olive oil, antioxidants such as lycopene from tomatoes, vitamins for summer sun and also takes care of our skin," says nutritionist Carolina Perez. It is full of fibre, which promotes intestinal transit and promotes cleansing of our body. Also it contains minerals such as phosphorus, iron, calcium, magnesium, zinc, copper, potassium and sodium. That is why gazpacho is regarded as an isotonic drink, because of its water content and mineral salts. Gazpacho also helps reduce blood pressure. "Consumption of the main natural ingredients of gazpacho is linked to a reduction in blood pressure. Hypertension is a condition that affects 25% of the adult population and is the main risk factor for heart attacks and strokes. Finally, other soft drinks that are experiencing a boom, especially among athletes, are sports drinks, which promote athletic performance and quickly help replenish losses caused by intense exercise. Their water content prevents dehydration, the concentration of carbohydrates (6-8%) is effective to maintain fluid balance, provide energy, maintain blood glucose levels and accelerate the absorption of water. Electrolytes help maintain fluid balance, nerve function and muscle contraction. However, many experts agree that if exercise lasts less than an hour, even in an intense and warm atmosphere, it is sufficient to hydrate by drinking water before, during and after exercise. Horchata is a rich sugary, energy drink with healthy fats

Save the Cabo de Palos Lighthouse
L
ast Sunday, the first meeting of the newly formed "Platform Salvemos Cabo de Palos lighthouse" took place at the foot of the Cabo de Palos lighthouse, where the participants declared "a resounding denunciation” of the PP's proposal to turn the lighthouse over to private management. The meeting was attended by representatives of the Neighborhood Association of Cabo de Palos, La Manga del Mar Menor, the Federation of Neighbors of Cartagena and Comarca (Favcav), CCOO representing the Port Authority, members of Círculo Podemos La Manga and Cartagena, Yes You can and a number of lighthouse residents and their families. They unanimously agreed that they were not prepared to see this historic building be passed into private management. The lighthouse is currently inhabited by the four families of the staff employed to operate the lighthouse who between them guide over 50,000 ships around the rocky headland of Cabo de Palos every year. The new Platform has been created as a "public entity, and it is not associated with any political
party. The members have set themselves the goal of "involving the majority of the population, the many neighborhood associations and other groups interested in joining the platform to obtain maximum support in defence of their local heritage." The lighthouse is one of the most interesting neoclassical buildings in the Region sitting on the last hill of the coastal mountain range of Cartagena at a point where the land land submerges under the Mediterranean waters before reemerging in the islands of Islas Hormigas. Originally created to house the school of "Escuela de Torreros", the lighthouse faces East on the highest point of the cape, an area where there was an artillery emplacement or watch tower back in the day. The idea of building a watch tower on the headland of Cabo de Palos as part of defense system covering the entire Murcia Region coast, is attributed to king Felipe II in 1570. The original tower was destroyed in 1861 with the idea of building what is now the Cabo de Palos Lighthouse, project coordinated by the engineer Leonardo de Tejada. The construction certificate of acceptance was dated December 18, 1864 and the lighthouse first emitted light on January 31, 1865.

Local Police chiefs close ranks around Santa Pola Commander Alicante’s Association of Local Police Chiefs (AJPLA), of which the Santa Pola Commander, José Miguel Zaragoza, is a member, have said that they consider the measures taken in relation to his public detention, together with 3 other members of his staff, was totally disproportionate and unjustified. The group of officers, numbering over 60 Chiefs of Police, from all the main municipalities across the region, say that the actions by the Economic and Fiscal Crime Unit (UDEF), during the arrest of José Miguel Zaragoza, has caused him untold personal and professional damage which will be impossible to repair, when there were other types of less harmful measures that could have been employed without undermining the police investigation. Zaragoza, along with 3 other policemen and a number of local businessmen from the company Redován Almacenes Riera, was arrested last week and interviewed in Alicante about alleged embezzlement and fraud, in respect of the supply of uniforms and clothing for both the Policia Local and the Protección Civil.
Zaragoza, left, with his lawyer
His solicitor said that his client testified whilst under caution, but the facts have not been published or made clear. Neither has there been any accusation and he still doesn’t know the crimes that Zaragoza is alleged to have committed. The association emphasised that Zaragoza's professional career "has been unimpeachable to date, as shown by the numerous police surveys it received over the years, as well as by his reputation as a teacher in The Valencian Institute of Public Safety and Emergencies, for which he has always been completely transparent and honest, as will be credited during the investigation.

My Spanish Heaven - La Naviera O
n its way to becoming the city’s culinary A-lister, Bar Restaurante La Naviera delivers its diners the many flavours of the Mediterranean as it invites you to sample a menu that offers one of the very best varieties and food selections in the area. With two great salons and a spacious outdoor terrace the restaurant, nevertheless, has a very cosy and familiar atmosphere. The staff are friendly and attentive and with over a hundred freshly prepared dishes to choose from you are likely to spend far more time salivating over the menu than you are actually eating. Soggy menu aside, breakfast is available all morning, from 9am, followed by a Menu del Dia and a Menu del Noche, both of which, at 10.90€ and 14.90€ respectively, providing starter, main, desert, bread, drink and coffee, deliver quality dining, which is absolutely excellent value for money.
Owned and operated by the expanding Magani Group, this is one restaurant where the food really does do the talking. If you are a fish person you will find nothing fresher, with all of the produce purchased daily from local Torrevieja fishermen, and the fish platter combination and octopus really do come highly recommended. For carnivores however, if you want a really special treat, why not go for cochinillo asado, or roast suckling pig, part of a tradition of farm-to-table eating that's appeared in literature, from Cervantes to Hemingway, for centuries. This is an entire piglet roasted whole, on an oak wood fire, a delicious delicacy that takes you to food nirvana. Now how could that not be to your liking? Bar Restaurante La Naviera is located on the outskirts of Torrevieja, a few hundred yards along from the Iceland Supermarket, heading toward the city centre. Perhaps the best landmark to use would be the large BP Garage situated directly across the road. It is open from 9am to midnight, Sunday to Thursday, 9am to 1am on Friday and Saturday. The restaurant has already achieved 5* Ratings on TripAdvisor. La Naviera is such a breath of fresh air in what is now a flooded dining scene. There are so many restaurants in the area and trying to find the good ones, while avoiding those that are not so good, is getting harder, and it will continue to be so. Apart from the delicious and exciting menu here, the staff are also a big part of this restaurants personality and for that I’ll most certainly be back. So, if you’re looking for quality, mod-
ern Spanish food with attitude – La Naviera has it all. As the restaurant gathers more and more recommendations and word starts to get around it is sure to start filling up. So make your reservation now on 965 033 746 or find us on Facebook at LaNaviera. The restaurant also caters for group bookings.

‘Letters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
El Hierro, Sailors and the Virgin
I
will shortly be making another visit to one of my favourite Canary Islands, the Island of El Hierro. Despite being the smallest of the islands in physical size, it is an island crammed with natural wonders, such as sea cliffs, lush forests and volcanic features to admire. Each of the Canary Islands is different, and El Hierro has become particularly special, and famous in environmental circles, due to its imaginative efforts in making the island self-sufficient from oil, relying upon water and wind power, of which it has plenty, to generate the electricity that the island needs. Electric cars, complete with charging points, and free Wi-Fi across the island are both modern technological factors that add to the special appeal of this island, which is in sharp contrast to the ruggedness and remoteness of an island that appears almost untouched by tourism. Occasional volcanic eruptions can be a slight disincentive for some tourists, although I suspect that this will change rapidly following the introduction of a 75 per cent travel discount for all residents of the Canary Islands. Inter-island travel is usually quite expensive, and discounted travel is a wise initiative from the Canary Islands Government, which should assist both communication and tourism.

The Descent of the Virgin of the Kings (Bajada de la Virgen de Los Reyes) is celebrated on the first Saturday of July every four years. The procession carries the statue of the Virgin from its hermitage to the island’s capital, Valverde, a journey of around 29 kilometres. La Bajada is an extraordinary procession, accompanied by dancers dressed in traditional white and red dresses, wearing multi coloured hats, and accompanied by the sounds of many castanets and drums. The whole island joins in the celebrations, which begins at the Hermitage of the Kings, at the west of the island, followed by lunch at ‘The Cross of the Kings’, arriving in Valverde during the evening. Celebrations take place during the entire month of July, with the statue of the Virgin visiting the most important towns and centres on the island, until the first Saturday of August, when it is returned to the hermitage. La Bajada is based upon a fascinating story that has become the focal point of the fiesta. In 1546, a ship passed along the coast of El Hierro destined for the Americas. However, the ship could not leave the Sea of Calm due to a lack of wind, so the ship was forced to sail in a circle for several days. Finally, on January 6 the food on board had run out and the sailors were forced to ask the islanders of El Hierro for food. Shepherds willingly gave the sailors the supplies for the harsh journey ahead, and without accepting payment. In return and in thanksgiving, the sailors gave the shepherds the only item of value that they kept on the ship, which was an image of the Virgin Mary. From this moment onwards, a gentle breeze began to blow in the Sea of Calm and the ship could recommence its journey. The shepherds carefully guarded the Virgin in honour of the day that the sailors arrived on the island. The carving was placed in a cave where she was venerated and offered gifts. The Virgin became the protector and patroness of the whole island. It has occurred to me that having a celebration of this kind every four years is a rather good idea, and wonder if a similar pattern should be implemented for many other fiestas that seem to come
around rather too quickly for me to catch up? Imagine Christmas, Easter, Halloween and the entire collection of fiestas taking place every four years; it would give us all much more time to catch our breath, as well as to save up for the big event. However, I guess that the Church and commercial interests, such as shops and manufacturers and children, would not be too keen. Maybe it is not such a good idea after all. La Marina Report by Barry Latham Our first floodlit game of the year so many thanks to Dave Hadaway who organised the very pleasant evening free from mosquitos. Some close old games followed with Tricia Elliot, Reg Jackson and Mo Kidd winning 15-14 followed by Irene Jones, Roger Stacey and Terry Perchard scraping through on the last end 15-13 and by the same amount Margaret Sadler, Carol Smith and Alex Whyte won 1917. Then came Hilary Cronk, Kathy Manning and Bill Jones winning 15-10. Second were Hazel Towers, Mick Lowe and Barry Sadler who won 26-12. And the Winners were quite easily Janet Parsons, Jean Perchard and Cliff Rawlinson winning 31-5. Haven’t a clue what they won but the main thing was that everyone enjoyed the evening. On Monday came the last but one Men’s Pairs League with our four playing Greenlands DW. Peter Parsons and Tom Spencer played away (Don’t tell their wives) and won 22-6 while Dave Taylor and Dave Hadaway were at home winning 23-8. Well done to both pairs on picking up five points. Can all members please read the Club Notice at the bottom the first lot of steps and then go to the Clubhouse, read the other notices and then fill the form in correctly, don’t do it for other people.

A very quiet week, with the final match played last week in the VCLeague, SL Falcons, after a wobbly season, ended up 4th in the A division, not brilliant but safe and we’ll just have to work harder next year! Friday 7th, South Alicante Spitfire Division: SL Wellingtons BYE. Currently we’re in 3rd place with our last match next week against Quesada Blenheims, who are currently in 2nd place, 1 point ahead of us. San Luis Open Summer Rinks, is running on Tuesday evenings 6:00/6:30 from 20th June- 1st August. After the first 3 weeks the top 3 teams on 4 points are: “Dribs & Drabs” (+20 shots), “San Luis Blues” (+18 shots), “The Laties” (+7 shots). We are also participating in the “egg cup challenge” - 4 matches of 6 trips home & away v our close neighbours La Siesta, The 1st match ended 3-3, and this week’s match on Monday 3rd also ended 3-3 - that’s 2 down and 2 to go!! SAN LUIS WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS: Whereas some clubs may be considering reducing their entries for the coming winter season, San Luis Bowls Club is going back to 4 for the South Alicante league on a Monday and 4 for the Southern league on a Friday. Being a competitive club does not mean that there is not room for everyone in ALL divisions to get at least one game a week. We will have 1 in Div A, 1 in Div B and 2 in Div C and it is as much the latter where we welcome players - either those who have played in the leagues and want to continue, or those who are now ready to test the water and get involved and above all enjoy the game. Your commitment to joining San Luis BC would be needed BY 1st August with membership from 1st September. However by joining in July there would be no charge for August when bowling at San Luis. For further information please contact the Club Captain - June Jones 966 188 920 or 691 903 773. You can also check out our web: www.sanluisbowls.byethost7.com I’m sorry to report that one of our long standing members Ciro Carannante, sadly passed away on Friday morning in UK. Carp-R-Us match report. Round eight of the Summer Series was moved to the El Bosquet complex as we still can’t access the match stretch in Murcia. Unusually for early July we started setting up in light rain, but this soon passed. Using the less favoured pegs 17 – 30 we knew it might be a bit of a struggle, and so it proved with Alan Smith winning with only 9.02 kg. Second was Steve Collins with 8.14 kg, third was Mark Foden with 7.02 kg and fourth was Keven Mortimer with 6.76 kg. Further information about the club can be found on its website www.carp-r-us.weebly.com or on our Facebook page Carp-R-Us Fishing Costa Blanca.
San Miguel Golf Society at La Finca. July 5th. Its been a while since the society has been to La Finca and 35 members and 4 guests made it this time around. A perfect day weather wise found the course in good condition apart from the greens, a rather major part of events, which had been sanded and fertilised with quite a bit still remaining after brushing. This meant they were slow and not very responsive to the break. The relatively long set-up of the course once again favoured lower handicappers, scoring in that category outdoing the vast majority of members in the other two. Tony Sims, Steve Higgins and Brian Mulligan all broke par, with the latter pair both scoring very good 39’s. The day’s stableford competition results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 4th Kyree Skarsmoen (26 on CB), 3rd Norman Padmore (28), 2nd Neil Sheldon (31), and 1st Chris Hamblett with 33 points. Silver Category: 4th Dave Blackburn (31), 3rd Linda Cain (32), 2nd Frank Stanhope (35), and 1st Brian Mulligan with 39 points Gold Category: 4th Jamie Rorison (36 on CB), 3rd Norman Cahill (36 on CB), 2nd Tony Sims (37), and 1st, Steve Higgins with 39 points. Nearest the pins on the par 3’s (open to all) went to Jamie Rorison (hole 3), Gary Hill (6), John Sorenson (13) and Noel Bannon (16). The Abacus was won by Wenche Westburg. The Best Guest prize went to Gary Hill (28)
In the VCL League La Siesta entertained Montemar Lords and it was the visitors who won the day by a close 104 shots to 99 with the points going to the visitors by 11 points to 3.Highlights for La Siesta were the Triples team of Barbara Cooper, Trish Reilly and Dave Laverick who managed a 14-14 draw whilst our Rinks team of Joy and Brian Gardiner with Pat Moore and skip Jean Cooper had a convincing 23-8 win. Recently in the Spitfire Divisions the Wasps were shot down on their visit to Vistabella the solitary point came from the Triple of Joy Gardiner with Bill and Sue Jordan who managed a 16-16 scoreline by picking up 4 shots on the final end.The overall match shots being 68 to La Siesta and 145 to Vistabella. However this Friday the Wasps bounced back to form at home to San Miguel Christians winning by 109 shots to 102 picking up 8 points to their opponents 6. Dave Davies with Florence and MikeEdwards lead the way with a superb win 21 - 12 win leading from start to finish. Dawn Taylor, Norman Adcroft and John Taylor had another great result winning 25 - 17, the ends being level pegging at halfway but by winning the the next 5 ends picking up two 4s along the way the pulled away to victory. Joy Gardiner wth, Bill and Sue Joranwere were 10 shots down on the 9th, and then picked up 14 shots on the last 8 ends to win 17 15.Sheila Chorley, Patrick Reilly and John Ball and Ramsay Sinclair, Irene Mangan and Alex Mrrice both only lost by a couple of shots. The Hornets travelled to top of the Table Horadada Hawks in the Harrier Divisionand finished up their league campaign with an 11-3 defeat by 101 shots to 86. The winning rink being Joe Kocsis,Sue Mahomet and Rab Logan by 22 shots to 12 whilst Sheila Millward,Tony Campbell and Pat Reilly secured a 15-15 draw. This campaign has been an encouraging sign of improvement with the Hornets still having a chance of winning the League until this final fixture an d eventually narrowly missing out as runners up. Well done to John Clarke and his fellow team members for doing so well, and gives optimism for results when the winter season begins.
Our thanks go to the staff at La Finca golf course for their contribution to an enjoyable day. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Captain Theo Boelhouwer a call on 694494824 to find out more about the society and its weekly golf get-togethers. Debbie thanks her supporters at Eurogolf
I would like to start by saying after being a member of Eurogolf for over 20 years its been truly an honour to be your captain this season. I would also like to thank the committee for all their hard work and great support during my captaincy including Clive Horne who stepped up to the plate to be match secretary when we were left at the last minute with a vacancy. Its been a great season for Eurogolf with lots of new members and its my pleasure to welcome them into our society and wish them all well. I know most of them are enjoying the social side of Eurogolf as well as the golf. As captain Ive had a good year with not too many problems. The Captains Ball, captains day and the presentation evening were all well supported and I thank all who attended for that. A few games didn't go quite according to plan but
hopefully lessons have been learned and the same mistakes wont be made again. The Captains bunker was a great success and most members took it in the spirit it was meant to be, a bit of fun whilst raising money for charity. It was very amusing how members liked to snitch on their playing partners. The total raised was €553 from the bunker fund and overall €2401 which was handed over to the counsellor for social services Rojales who said she was going to use the money to help the elderly people of Rojales with wheelchairs and motability scooters. Last year when I was looking for a Vice Captain it proved very difficult to get someone to accept the position, as Fred now knows himself. Im not talking out of turn, as Fred knows this but with just a few weeks to go to the end of last season I was fortunately drawn to play with Fred and he agreed to be my vice captain. I was over the moon even though I hardly knew him. But 12 months on and having played with him every week I've got to know him really well and with his many years of golf experience I've no doubt he will be a super Captain. I wish him and his new committee every success for next season and I look forward to being the President. Before I finish I would like to pay tribute to a committee member who has for many years worked really hard for Eurogolf. A lot of members I'm sure don't realise how much work goes on behind the scenes so it gives me great pleasure to present Sue Gillett with a bouquet of flowers from the members as a show of appreciation for everything she has done for Eurogolf.

La Marina Golf Society SUMMER CUP The first of 4 rounds to decide the winner of the summer cup took place at Vistabella golf on Thursday. In quite oppressive weather conditions, most people achieved good scores although round of the day went to modest " i've got no chance" Pete Wootton on the day of his wedding anniversary, with a score of 42 points, eclipsing even the 39 points of consistent high scorer Gerry McCabe. Gold division winner was john Brastock with a comparatively measly 34 points, beating Alan Craig on countback, something that Alan has had to suffer a few times recently. Winners of nearest the pins were Barry Thorogood twice and Garry Garbett. Our next meeting is at Roda golf on July 20th , 0928 start at a cost of 40 euros. List is on the board as usual or contact Alan Craig on a100ac@yahoo.co.uk or 634 347 788.
T.M.G.S @ Campoamor Golf - 5 July 40 members and guests teed it up at what has become a firm favourite of our members and when you read the results you’ll see why. The scores were un believable. The course was presented in immaculate condition and continues to improve. The lower handicappers seemed to have more success. In the bronze category it needed 36 points from Alex Goslan to take 3rd place, Andy Skinner took 2nd with 39 points and a massive 43 points from Irishman Robbie Ray secured 1st place. Again in the Silver category the scores were exceptional, John Hettrick secured 3rd place with 37 points Lars Jernberg must have thought that he had done enough to win but his 43 points could only take 2nd place with Yorkshireman Mick Kennedy topping this category with 44 points. Gold category saw a little more civilised scoring with 4 players on 33
points, 3rd went to Carstan Landaas on handicap, 2nd was taken by Kenny Winton again only lower handicap but 1st place went to Captain John Eyre with 38 points. Best guest was B. Albin with 37 points. The €29 contained in the 2’s pot was taken by Joe Dean on hole 17. N.T.P.’s hole 4 J. Masson, hole 6 R. Nilsen, hole 10 M. Kennedy, hole 15 NADA, hole 17 J. Dean. Photo: Gold category winners. Our Anniversary Competition will be held at La Marquesa this year on the 9/8/17 where after the competition the committee invite the members to a full 3 course lunch in the clubhouse, which should make it a full house! ‘The only way is up’ as Pedreño remains at Torry
P
opular former local bank manager, Antonio By Steve Pedreño, will be continu- Hibberd ing in his role as Torry team manager for season 2017/18. He has pledged to do his upmost in securing a quick return to the Tercera division, following a disappointing relegation last season. It will be the first time since 2005 that the Salinas boys will be plying their trade in Preferente division, Group IV, which will be composed of the following 18 teams: CD Torrevieja, Almoradi (both recently relegated), Jove Espanol, Villajoyosa, Callosa, Elda Industrial, Hercules A, Petrelense, Villena, Redovan, Universidad Alicante, Thader Rojales, Benferri, UD Ilicitana, Albertera (unless they disband), Calpe (switching groups), Monteforte and Pinoso (both promoted from the 1st Regional division). President Vicente Boix has announced that he fully expects Torry to return to the Vicente Garcia Stadium for the start of next season, and has been working hard to get some new constructions in place.
He has also been talking to a mystery consortium, although details have yet to be revealed, so watch this space! This news comes on the back of a recent fire to the main grandstand, which although local fireman dealt with efficiently, resulted in damage to the press area and the back of the main stand.
