Back to school with a hundred pairs of shoes T he Celtic Isle in Playa Flamenca was the venue of yet another massive benefit on Wednesday afternoon for the youngsters of the two children’s homes in Orihuela and Elche as, once again, fundraiser extraordinaire, Stevie Spit, put his energies into raising much needed
funding for these two very worthwhile local charities. The venue has been hosting a weekly market during the summer months, another of Stevie’s initiatives, with monies raised being donated toward the daily running costs of the two homes, but on Wednesday Stevie used the occasion to invite along
Vincente, the Director of the San Jose Obrero Orphanage in Orihuela, where he was asked to accept the fruits from a
number of Stevie’s other
recent fundraising labours. Continued on Page 2

First up were two full sized table tennis tables donated by Susan Phillips of the Entre Naranjos Fiesta Committee. As Sue explained, the committee has recently folded, so as well as sharing out the finances amongst the urbanisations in the village, the two tables and equipment were donated to the homes, one to each, where it is hoped that they will provide another leisure activity for the children. The same reasoning was also applied by local entertainer Johnny Lea who provided two Nintendo Wii’s, again one to each home, for the benefit of the children who live there. His only concern was that they might cause minor arguments as the youngsters stand in the queue to play the games. There was also a cheque for 2,500 euros which was donated jointly through the efforts of Stevie and Help at Home Costa Blanca who, between them, raise the monies through Stevie’s Summer Shoe Appeal. An idea formed between the Help at Home CB Committee and Stevie, the appeal was launched by the Leader Newspaper at the start of the summer, the intention being to raise enough funding to purchase one new pair of shoes for each of the 100 children that reside in the two homes.
Jenny and Roger have been running the Celtic Isle market for the two homes throughout the summer months Through the unbelievable generosity of the local public the target of 2500 euro was reached at the end of August, since which time Stevie has been in contact with a local manufacturer who has agreed to provide all of the shoes at cost price. The shoes will all be purchased during this coming week, ensuring a brand new pair for each of the youngsters in the homes just in time for their return to school. An eventful day at the Celtic Isle most certainly, but more importantly, a day that has helped to provide just a little bit of cheer to many of the children in both Orihuela and Elche, and a day also that could not have been achieved without the tireless help and support of so many volunteers who work so hard behind the scenes.
As well as Stevie of course, thanks must also be given to Kylie Burgazzi, Heather Thorley, Ruth O'Toole, Fred Rudall, Christine and Jack, Dave and Lindsay Mannion, Eamonn Lynch, Julie and Stuart, Adrian, Chrissy and Gary, Carmen, Eileen, Sylvia, Esther, Susan Phillips and Johnny Lee. If you still have the flexibility to do so I think you should all pat yourselves on the back, but if you can’t, I can recommend a very good physiotherapist! Well done. It would seem that the shoe appeal has now reached well beyond the Orihuela Costa, as shoe factory owners in both Canada and Norway have been in touch with Stevie with a view to making further large donations to the appeal. We await further info with bated breath.
Seven brits arrested for hotel food scams The Civil Guard has broken up an organisation that was dedicated to making claims for food poisoning in the hospitality sector, where they preyed on holidaymakers who were staying in local hotels. After months of investigation the officers raided six homes and two commercial properties in the Balearic towns of Calviá and Palma following which they made seven arrests, all of which were UK Nationals, on suspicion of leading a ring specializing in fraudulent food poisoning claims. The network controlled a team of “negotiators” who were sent out to local hotels in search of tourists, offering to help them process the claim and explaining what documents they needed to produce. Although the group is said to have mainly operated on the island of Mallorca, where the hotel industry estimates that it has been scammed out of some €50 million, their activities also extended to other popular destinations, where the sector was cheated of a further €10 million. The operation began at the end of May, when the Civil Guard received several complaints from managers and directors of hotels in the tourist area of ??Alcudia in which they claimed that British tourists were fraudulently claiming compensation for alleged poisoning during their holidays from hotels where they were staying on an all-inclusive basis. These tourists were encouraged to make the false claims by a group of people who convinced them it was ‘easy money’, and who offered to process the claims once the holidaymakers had returned to
their country or origin, usually the United Kingdom. This practice is said to have been in place for a number of years with 160 food poisoning claims filed by British travellers to Mallorca in 2015, for a combined compensation of £3 million (€3.3m). The following year, there were nearly 400 similar claims worth a total £8 million (€8.7m). In 2018 a spokesman said the claims have spiralled out of control with the scam now worth approximately £60 million. Following complaints from hoteliers the Civil Guard began to monitor a number of regular claimants resulting in the arrest of the 7 Britons. ON searching the premises the Guardia seized corroborating documentation, together with financial details of the operation, as well as a number of computers that were removed for analysis.

Another long haul for charity O
nce again Dave and Mitch Bull are off on another adventure raising awareness and funds for charity.
Last year the father and son team headed off on a mammoth 6500km journey around the perimeter of Spain and in 2015 they rowed two kayaks 52km down the River Segura from Murcia to Guardamar on the coast. Why do they do it? Well, in 2014 a close family member was diagnosed with terminal cancer and wanting to do something to help the lads came up with the idea of the first challenge; the kayaking. Last year saw them visit 23 cities while travelling around Spain and raising the profiles of their chosen charities. They strongly support the Samaritans in Spain and Dave is also the patron for them. This time the pair will cycle from Gibraltar to their homes in Gran Alacant, some 800km in 10 or 11 days! Camping at night and again living on a 5 euro per day budget for feeding themselves they will also meet up with friends and supporters as they head home along Spain's southern and south eastern coasts. They will leave Gibraltar on the 24th of October, having travelled down overnight on a bus, and head along the coast for their first night's rest on the road somewhere near to Fuengirola and then push on up the
coast via Marbella and on to Nerja, Motril, Aguadulce and Almería. From there they will hug the coast up to Mazarron then head up to Cartagena before going to the end of the Mar Menor and then Torrevieja for the last leg home. It's a huge distance and covering 80km each day will not be easy but Dave and Mitch tell us they're ready for it, so good luck to them and we'll bring you more information as the time to begin this challenge gets closer. Any donations to the causes can be done via their own websites (with the lack of a Just Giving type of site available in Spain) - see the links below - and Mitch and Dave ask that you let them know when you have done it to keep a record of the amounts raised. Repairs to Pascual Flores to cost up to a million euros Torrevieja has asked the Nao Victoria Foundation to fund the costs of necessary repairs and maintenance to the Pascual Flores, which could reach a staggering 1 million euros. Based in Seville, the Nao Victoria Foundation is a non-profit marketing and educational platform that promotes historical events, which are supported by the construction of historical ships (the Nao Victoria and El Galeón) that are sailed throughout the world’s ports, and if agreement can be reached it ishoped that the foundation will take over the management of the Pascual Flores in exchange for its return for Torrevieja for approximately 2 months every year. The city has already spent more than 4.5 million euros of public money on this imposing and historic 3-masted schooner, a onetime star of the TV series ‘The Onedin Line. She was the last sailing ship built on the Arenal beach in Torrevieja in the second decade of the twentieth century. The boat served for many years as a freighter. After her trading career finished she was
British owned and based first at Dartmouth and then in Bristol. The ship was rescued in Milford Haven and sold to Torrevieja council for 160,000 euros. She was brought back to her home port of Torrevieja on a heavy lift ship where, in 2008, where she was restored at a cost, in the region, of 4 million euros. Nine years later, during which time it has only once set sail, it is riddled with problems. Just last week areas of the wooden mast were found to be rotten and according to the mayor, Jose Manuel Dolon, the repairs that it urgently needs will cost the public purse between 600,000 and 1 million euros. As such the council has now made contact with the Nao Victoria Foundation who, it is hoped, will relieve the city of the schooner and cover the costs of its necessary restoration. They will than make use of the vessel, sailing it to historical events around the world, where it will promote the foundation and the city of Torrevieja.
Rail strike called for 29 September Coincidentally the discovery was made by the same man who had found an earlier skeleton in January. According to police sources there appears to be no link between Saturday afternoon’s find and the skeleton from 8 months ago, although at this stage there is no indication of either the age of the skeleton, the cause of death or its identity. Coincidentally the discovery was made by the same man who made the earlier find. He said that he was out walking his dog at about 2.30pm on Saturday when he noticed what appeared to be skeletal remains protruding from the ground. After his previous experience he didn’t hesitate to call the National Police. The National Police quickly verified what seemed to be a corpse buried in a rocky area, about 30 metres from the shore. They advised the Judicial Police and the forensic authorities. It was also necessary to obtain the help of firefighters who helped to out the remains which were buried under some very large rocks. What the police recovered was a practically complete skeleton, although it was said to be in an advanced state of deterioration, which was approximately a metre and a half in length, leading the authorities to theorise that it could well be a child. The remains were transferred to the Institute of Forensic Medicine who will try to determine the cause of death and the identity of the remains, as well as any other data that may shed light on the find. According to the preliminary analysis the remains are thought to be about 20 years old. The National Police have dismissed any relationship with the January discovery which has failed to identify the remains, now thought to over 100 years old, and without any traces of any DNA. A strike in July resulted in the cancellation of 274 trains
The CC.OO. union, Spain's largest trade union, is calling for a national strike on 29 September from 00:00 to 23:00 across the Spanish rail network in its effort to improve working conditions and offer better pay for its members. The national rail strike, which could coincide with airport strikes on the same day, may affect the local, regional, and high-speed AVE networks. The CC.OO. represents workers from infrastructure company Adif and the train operators Renfe. Recently it has denounced both companies because of a shortage of staff which, according to the union, is having an adverse effect on serv-
ice and safety. Furthermore, the lack of investment is causing a deterioration in the infrastructure and inadequate maintenance to rolling stock. According to Manuel Nicolás Taguas, general secretary of the CC.OO., railway sector, the union has no other option as talks with the Ministry of Public Works have hit a deadlock. "Almost 6,000 jobs have been lost that will have to be recovered if the rail quality standards in Spain are to be maintained", according to the union. In July, a strike called by the CGT union resulted in the cancellation of 274 AVE and medium and long Distance trains.

Birthday celebrations at The Abbey Tavern he Abbey Tavern recently celebrated their 16th
Tbirthday and they certainly did it in style, with
the garden/stage area packed to capacity. They had ´The Liverpool Band´to entertain everyone, complete with Liverpool accents, so as the evening progressed we were all rather surprised to find out they were all Spanish. Juan was on lead guitar, Chema was Lennon and playing a variety of instruments including a Rickenbacker guitar. Jorge played bass and finally Ivan was Ringo on the drums. Their onstage appearance was very authentic, even playing similar instruments to those used by the Beatles. The band were given rapturous applause after every song and so life-like to listen to, singing along with the melodies was almost compulsory! The Abbey was festooned with balloons and bunting with a surprise appearance of Mickey Mouse who mingled with the crowd for photographs. Some mythical figure was strutting about on stilts with a gold beaked face mask dressed in a
long black cloak, both scaring the children and delighting them at the same time. The Abbey staff worked very hard that night and are to be congratulated on a good night had by all. By Janet ´Scoop´Carter

Progress on deal to avert National airport strikes
T
rade union organisations and the ministry of Public Works will return today, Tuesday, as they to continue with negotiations aimed at averting airport strikes across the country starting next Friday, 15 September. The majority unions of Aena and Enaire, UGT, CC.OO. and USO, agreed on Thursday to postpone the call for strike action at Spanish airports on Friday, but they have set a deadline until the end of the month to reach an agreement. So today, everyone will gather around the negotiating table once again as all those involved work toward making a deal that will avoid a national strike, although at the time of writing the timetable and location were still to be determined. The three trade union representatives present at the
negotiating table said that that they feel that progress has been made and that they can "see very favourable prospects" as a result of which they are confident that an agreement can be reached, in the future meetings, that will put an end to the conflict with Aena and Enaire, the government body responsible for the management of Air Traffic Control. However Francisco Javier Casado, of Comisiones Obreras (CCOO), has said that the unions will have no alternative other than to call a strike by the end of October in all Spanish airports, if the September talks fail to reach any agreement. Other trade union bosses added that they now feel that the Ministry of Public Works "is moving in the right direction" stating that that "they are beginning to see some progress" as they work to reach an
agreement. As a result, the call for 25 days of strike action, starting on Friday September 15 has been postponed for the time being. The unions are asking for pay rises that they say will enable their employees to recover the purchasing power that their members have lost in recent years, an estimate of around 8%. They have said that they also expect to recover many of the workforce lost through retirement and early retirement: 250 positions in Enaire and 450 in Aena. The union representatives add that the time has come for them to also benefit from the efficient operation of the company, which has reduced airport tariffs and seen a significant increase in the stock market revaluation of Aena in recent years.
Absence of lighting and footpath is accident waiting to happen There has been a builders deposit available and earmarked for this project for many years, so why no headway?
As residents of the Orihuela Costa we are all delighted, of course to have been able to contribute toward the cost of the improved lighting at the city’s new intelligent pedestrian crossing in Los Andenes. Anything that improves the safety of pedestrians, particularly after nightfall, is to be applauded. I’m sure that mayor Emilio Bascuñana would agree. So why, Mr Mayor, are the residents of Lomas de Cabo Roig still being required to take their lives in their hands every time they take the short, but extremely dangerous walk, from their homes, along Calle Cabo Creus from Lomas de Cabo Roig and the Fuente Commercial Centre, over the bridge at the AP7 motorway, to the Cabo Roig Medical centre, or the beaches and facilities just beyond. During summer season more than 1000 vehicles a day pass over the bridge, putting the lives of pedestrians and cyclists in danger every time they make the journey.
It is now over four years since the bridge and cycle path were first promised by the Partido Popular on which there has been absolutely no movement on the project, and for which no new budgetary funds are needed since there has been a builders deposit available and earmarked for this project for many years. Without a pedestrian crossing, the increasing population of Lomas de Cabo Roig risk their lives every time they use the road bridge over the motorway to access the medical centre, shops and beaches of Campoamor. Quite how there haven’t been more deaths amongst the many pedestrians that regularly use this roadway, either en route to or from the beach, and the bars and restaurants, or to the Medical Centre, particularly at night, is an absolute miracle.

CLARO slams Municipal budget as it seeks major increases for residents of Orihuela Costa
I
n the consultation procedure for approving the much delayed Orihuela municipal budget for 2017, C.L.A.R.O. has submitted proposals which make major criticisms of the proposed budget and call for major increases for Orihuela Costa. The main criticism is that the budget proposals fail to provide sufficient financial resources for the services and investments needed in Orihuela Costa. The proposed budget is discriminatory and continues the long history of using the income raised principally from taxpayers on the coast to provide greatly superior services and investments for Orihuela city. The proposed budget of €83 million is based on an increase in revenue of €8.8 m compared to 2016, €5 million of which is raised directly from Orihuela Costa. The major sources of this increased income are a rise in the local property tax (IBI) of 7.5% and sale of municipal land valued at €1.6 million for investments. The coast is responsible for some 60% of the municipal income and gets in return only a few percentages points of expenditure. The sale of municipal land essentially located on the coast and sold for new house building is a long standing practice of the Orihuela local governments which systematically fail to use the funds for investments on the coast. The stock of municipal land on the coast is being steadily depleted and leaves insufficient land for necessary investments in, for example, a new medical centre, facilities for the elderly and the young and a much needed library and cultural centre – Orihuela city has three libraries and two cultural venues to which a third will be added with the revamping of the ruined bullfighting arena. The Popular Party/Citizens governing coalition claims that Orihuela Costa will get an extra €1.8 million for external contracts for maintenance of parks and gardens, street and pavement repairs and beaches compared to the 2016 budget. This is equal to an increase of 19% of the extra €9.5 million in running costs planned for 2017, nothing like the 30% of the ever increasing population of
the coast in the total population of the municipality. To add insult to injury, the budget for street cleaning and rubbish removal costs has been reduced by €1 million compared to 2016. This is a completely cynical blow to the coast which has notorious problems of street cleaning and rubbish removal, in particular garden waste which can lie rotting on the pavements and streets for long periods of time. Equally cynical is the failure to respect the principle, to which all parties agreed in 2012 when C.L.A.R.O. had an elected councillor, that 40% of investments would be directed to Orihuela Costa in recognition of the historical deficiency of investments in the coast and in recognition of the budgetary contribution of coastal residents and taxpayers. The author of the 2012 budget was none other than Juan Ignacio Lopez Bas the present deputy Mayor and leader of the Citizens Party to which they switched just before the elections in 2015. The combined total of investments in 2017 including those in the proposed budget and those previously announced is almost €13 million. The share of Orihuela Costa will be no more than 20%, half of the previously agreed principle that 40% of investments should go to the coast. Since most of this investment income comes from the sale of municipal land on the coast for increased house building, implying an ever increasing population with a zero increase in the services provided, coastal residents are being subject to multiple discriminations. In C.L.A.R.O’s proposals for modifications in the proposed 2017 budget we seek extra expenditure for social services, including a day centre in the Savia care home for retired residents, extra personnel for the Playa Flamenca Town Hall to improve the efficiency of services to citizens, a reduction in the charges of the privately managed municipal sports centre, extra expenditure on essential services like street cleaning and rubbish removal, measures to reduce traffic congestion in the area of the La Zenia roundabout and Avenida Villamartin leading to La Zenia Boulevard and completion of the so-called “via parallela” the almost completed
system of linked roads running parallel to the N332 which would also relieve congestion caused by the new commercial centre. We also insist on pedestrian bridges over the N332 at Alameda del Mar for access to Cala Mosca and over the AP-7 between Campoamor and Lomas de Cabo Roig. Finally the C.L.A.R.O. proposals ridicule the amount of €50,000 included in the budget for the study of a cultural/social centre with library. At this rate the completion of a social/cultural centre will drag on as long as the still incomplete Emergency Services Centre, the foundation stone for which was laid 10 years ago! The truth is that a social/cultural centre should already have been built on the municipally owned land now serving as part of the car park for La Zenia Boulevard. It would in part redress the imbalance which exists between city and coast where the city, with a similar size population, has its three libraries and two, soon to be three, cultu-
ral venues. Will the governing Popular Party and Citizens coalition pay any notice to these fair and reasonable proposals for the 2017 budget, shared by numerous other associations on the coast, to reduce some of the discriminations imposed on Orihuela Costa? We have no illusions. The Orihuela government has no sense of duty towards the coast which it continues to milk for its political benefit in Orihuela city. This is why the major demonstrations of anger on the coast which we have seen in the Town Hall meeting of 4 August and, embarrassingly for the government, at the starting line in Campoamor of the Costa Blanca stage of La Vuelta round Spain cycle race on 27 August will no doubt continue until justice is finally delivered to the long suffering residents of Orihuela Costa. The original tower situated on La Mata’s promenade that was constructed in the 14th century is set to see repairs completed this month. Work got underway at the south La Mata area to repair the historical tower on the promenade after storms lashed the coast, causing severe damage, in March. Huge repairs costs – both to buildings and the golden sandy beaches – have taken place this year after the Spanish Government were alerted to storms damage concerns. A meeting in Madrid lead to over 1m euros worth of funding being earmarked for repairs. Damage at La Mata’s old salt dock and at the La Mata promenade historic towers have been overseen by Domingo Soler, Torrevieja’s Councillor for Works and Services. Skips and fencing have been in situ at the La Mata promenade
site this summer, denying thousands of tourists a closer look at the tower, originally constructed in the 14th century, in defence of the town coming under Berber attack. Works were given the go-ahead on the Torre del Embarcadero watch tower - a protected monument – after cracks appeared in the walls that lead to fears of collapse into the sea. Authorisation was granted by the General Directorate of Heritage and the Generalitat of the Costas before work commenced.

The Stinky Tr ee
I
t is often fascinating to discover some of the remedies and answers to problems that can be found by looking at the past. If we look carefully, we often find answers to many present day problems, and how our ancestors dealt with the inconveniences of life. I discovered this recently when looking at a tree on the small island of El Hierro. A visit to the enchanting island of El Hierro is not complete without a visit to see the Stinkwood or Smelly tree (Ocotea foetus), which is native to the island. The tree is evergreen, a member of the laurel family, and is threatened due to the loss of habitat in the areas where it thrives and, I suspect, its pungent aroma. Yes, it can be smelly, hence the name, because the tree is rich in essentials oils. These oils give off an unpleasant odour to the wood when cut, but don’t let this part of the story put you off. After all, stinky or not, this tree does have an interesting story to tell… The Stinkwood tree was sacred to the ancient inhabitants of the small Canary Island of El Hierro, the Bimbaches, who called it the Garoe. Legend states that the Garoe assured the life of the Bimbaches, because it provided them with sufficient water to ensure their survival. Remember, this was not a time when the locals could pop into the local shop and buy a large bottle. The Canary Islands are visited by the trade winds and, since water was so scarce, the little water that
was available to these ancient islanders were from the clouds that condensed on the branches of the tree. It is said that water that dripped from this tree was led to a hole from which the Bimbaches took their water supply.

A visit to the enchanting island of El Hierro is not complete without a visit to see the Stinkwood or Smelly tree.
The original Garoe tree was destroyed by a storm on the island, but in 1957 a replacement tree was planted in the same location as the original tree. Legend or not, the same principles as deployed by these ancient people are still just as relevant to fulfilling islanders need for water today. Let us now move to another Canary Island, Fuerteventura, where similar principles for catching water are still used. The Fuerteventura Government has been collecting mist for the last year or two, and this new technology has already collected over 33,000 litres of water. Mist collectors use humidity from the trade winds that blow across Fuerteventura, and extract water from mist and fog to create a sustainable water supply. Meters fitted to the mist collectors show around 6,500 litres of water are collected each month during the trade winds season. So, how is this done in Fuerteventura without the assistance of the Garoe tree? This simple technology uses mesh placed on vertical structures in high mountain areas that intercept mist and humidity that blows across them, and water droplets fall into storage tanks. These mist collectors use water from sea mist or clouds to support the reforestation of endemic or specific species of plants and trees, which will help plant habitats to recover by providing moisture for
the soil and improve the quality of the environment and landscape. It is both a humbling and fascinating thought that technology and processes used by the ancient people in the Canary Islands are being brought back into use today in an effort to rectify damage caused to the environment over many centuries.

Enabling blind dogs to “See,” The first in Spain
T
his is Liam Neeson, “Some mornings I wake up and think, gee I look handsome today,” he is a Spanish Mastin. Spain has not always been kind to Liam, ‘Save a Mastin’ rescued him from the Valladolid Perrera, he had been abandoned, he was ill and had problems with his eyes. Liam had ehrlichiosis, a tick borne infection. Liam was treated for the ehrlichiosis and is now free of the disease, but, sadly for Liam, his sight could not be saved. Liam is now totally blind and had lost all confidence; even going for a walk was a major event. Liam went into foster care in Malaga, but is now in foster in Hacienda Del Alamo, Murcia. We, Liam’s new fosterers, did some research into blind dogs and decided that an echolocation unit would be the best solution for Liam. Save a Mastin and Brigitte Jaquillard, did not hesitate and a BlindSight S2 was purchased from Jordy Candy Inc. in America. This, as far as we are aware, is the first echolocation unit to be fitted to a dog in Spain. It is a wonderfully enabling device, what is better than enabling the blind to “see?” Liam’s confidence has grown immeasurably since he has been fitted with the BlindSight. He is able navigate partially open doors! It is still early days and if he gets excited and moves too quickly he may still bang his head. We are, however, delighted with Liam’s progress with the BlindSight. There must be many blind dogs in Spain who could benefit from a BlindSight device. Let Hacienda Del Alamo, Fuente Alamo, Murcia and Save a Mastin lead the way in enabling the blind dogs of Spain. People and dogs may have disabilities but it is society that disables them. It is people who park cars on the pavement, leave water meter doors open and allow their hedges to overgrow the pavement that disables blind dogs, blind people, wheelchair users and mothers with pushchairs. Save a Mastin and Liam want to raise awareness and
funds so that many blind dogs may be helped. “The eyes those silent tongues of love.” Miguel de Cervantes The BlindSight units are 3D imaging SONAR emitters. SONAR works by the principal known as echolocation. Echolocation is the use of sound waves and echoes to determine where objects are in space. Bats use echolocation to navigate and find food in the dark. To echolocate, bats send out sound waves from their mouth or nose. When the sound waves hit an object they produce echoes. Other attributes of an object may also be determined, such as size and even surface texture The use of “echolocation” can benefit an animal by providing relative location, distance and other information. This information is not affected by lack of sight. More information from Paul Hosking at p33hos@iclud.com

Catalonia pushes Spain toward crisis Aena make further investment in The battle for Independence by the wealthy Spanish state of Catalonia hit crisis point on Friday as the country’s Constitutional Court, Spain’s highest legal authority, suspended the vote planned for 1 October. The central government called the move an attack against Spain's and Catalonia's institutional order. Although the decision was widely expected, Carles Puigdemont, the regional president, said that neither central Spanish authorities nor the courts could halt their plans and the referendum would still go ahead as planned, adding that many of his supporters are prepared to go to jail over the issue. "It is worrying that the state is seeking to scare people and make threats, faced with the desire for a vote," Lluis Corominas, vice president of the Catalan parliament, told national radio. With its own language and customs, Catalonia accounts for about one-fifth of Spain's economic output, and already has significant powers over matters such as education and healthcare. But in a survey by the Catalan Centre of Opinion Studies in June, 41.1 per cent backed independence while 49.9 per cent

rejected it. Some 70 per cent wanted a referendum, however, to settle the question once and for all. And as the battle lines continue to be drawn between the independence hardliners and the Spanish government, however, and as the hostility continues to be ramped up, yesterday (Monday) saw hundreds of thousands of Catalans attend a rally in the streets of Barcelona, in what campaigners said was a show of support for independence following Madrid’s move to block the planned referendum. The 'Diada' day of September 11, which commemorates the fall of Barcelona to Spain in 1714, is often used by activists to voice their demands for an independent state. Coach-loads of demonstrators travelled into the city from villages across the whole region. Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont was one of the 'independentistas' to take to the streets
The La Manga El Estacio Bridge reopened last Tuesday evening after eight days during which it was closed whilst undergoing repair. At the end of August the bridge’s electronic communication system failed which forced the authorities to close the bridge as a preventive measure for the second time this year.
San Javier airport Airport management company Aena continue to invest in San Javier Airport with their replacement of traditional lighting equipment with new LED-type lamps that will reduce CO2 emissions, energy consumption and their maintenance costs. The new lights (more than 800 of them) have been fitted throughout the terminal building where they illuminate an area of ??more than 11,000 square meters. They are all equipped with LED technology (Light Emitting Diode), which is far more efficient, provides longer life and which generate more unpolluted light (no mercury).
as Spain's state prosecutor enters into criminal proceedings against Puigdemont and 13 members of his cabinet on charges of misuse of public money, disobedience and abuse of office. At the height of pro-independence fervour in 2012, during a deep economic recession in Spain, around one million people took to the streets waving the Catalan flag and singing the Catalan anthem. Polls now show support for independence to be waning, and those wanting a separate state are now in a minority. However, a majority of Catalans still want to hold a referendum.
After spare parts were procured and fitted by the German manufacturers, council technicians carried out technical tests last week to confirm serviceability, enabling the bridge to reopen so that the sailboats and yachts of more than seven meters can once again sail again between Mar Menor and the Mediterranean.
The annual energy saving is expected to be over 126,000 kilowatthours, and it will reduce emission by more than 20 tons of CO2 per year.
Torre Pacheco plaza celebrates 150th anniversary Purchased by auction in 1867 the Torre Pacheco Plaza is celebrating 150 years of history starting with a number of events commemorating the occasion on Municipality Day, this coming Sunday, September 17th. Sobering thought in wake of clampdown of alcohol sales at sports venues With the 2017-18 amateur football season set to kickoff this month clubs across Spain have been notified of an alcoholic ban at sports venues. “Spanish laws leave no doubt that this season alcohol will not be sold at the ground,” said CD Montesinos spokesperson Eddie Cagagio. Champagne corks were flying at the end of last season at the Los Montesinos, Alicante based club after achieving promotion to the 1st Regional, making club history. But this season supporters will have to drink alcohol elsewhere - before, during and after fixtures - as the authorities have informed sports venues that heavy fines will be imposed to those breaking the law. “It is an offence to sell alcohol inside every sports facility in Spain - that's a Government rule throughout the country,” said Eddie. And it is understood that the Guardia Civil will be making ‘spot checks’ at sports grounds this season. It was mooted that during the summer the Guardia Civil inspected a Youth tournament in San Miguel and fined a club 3,000 for selling alcohol at the ground. “We have received a letter - via the Council - asking
us to submit our fixture list for the 2017-18 season,” said Eddie. “We have also been advised about the law – and informed that ‘spot checks’ will be made this season,” said Eddie. Football clubs within the Regional football leagues, along with all sports clubs, will see a fall in much needed revenue following the imposed alcohol ban. An alcohol ban was initially imposed at the Spanish Grand Prix in 2015 and it was reported at the time that punters were paying €11 for non-alcoholic beer. The alcohol ban remained at the 2017 Spanish Grand Prix in May. A spokesperson said: “A full alcohol ban was introduced at the circuit in 2015 and remains in force. “People were told not to bring any beer or alcohol into the circuit. Only non-alcoholic beer is on sale inside the circuit.” There are different policies in place regarding the purchase of alcohol during sports events at Wembley Stadium. The sale and consumption of alcohol is permitted at Rugby League events - and other sporting events such as American Football. There are strict rules regarding the sale and consump-
San Miguel Golf Society at La Finca. 6th September 31 members and 3 guests who made it to La Finca to play the last round of the Presidents Trophy found themselves baking under a somewhat oppressive heat. Greens were slow recent hollow tining and sanding and many putts were left short and also most of the holes were of the back tee,s. However, even given these difficulties the scores were, across the board, were very good with 9 players making par or better. The day’s stableford competition results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 4th Paul Fisher (30), 3rd Chris Hamblett (32), 2nd Ron Stenhouse (34), and 1st Norman Padmore with 36 points. Silver Category: 4th Alan Macdonald (34), 3rd Brian Mulligan (35), 2nd Norman Cahill (37), and
first with 39 points Nick Spicer. Gold Category 4th Jamie Rorison (36 on CB), 3rd Kenny Reddington (38), 2nd Gerald Harwood (39 on CB), and 1st John Osborne with 39 points. Nearest the pins on the par 3’s (open to all) went to Brian Mulligan (3), Brian Mulligan (6), Phil deLacy (13) and Dave Watson (16). The Abacus was won by Norman Mcbride. Our thanks go to the staff at La Finca golf course for their contribution to an enjoyable day. tion of alcohol at football events at Wembley Stadium. It is permitted on the concourses - in restaurants and private hospitality areas - at England international friendly games, the FA Cup and Football League games. At UEFA and FIFA fixtures alcohol is only allowed to be sold and consumed within the restaurants and private hospitality areas - not on the public concourses. Alcohol must not be consumed inside the main Wembley Stadium bowl or within view of the pitch, during the FA Cup Final, Semi-finals and other Cup Finals. CD Montesinos stage their first 2017-18 1st Regional home fixture at The Municipal Stadium, Los Montesinos, against Santa Pola CF on September 24. Added to the non sale of alcohol in sports stadia supporters are also prohibited to take alcohol into grounds for their own consumption: “That too is prohibited,” said Eddie. “And, should the Guardia Civil inspect, and any individual is found to be consuming alcohol, they are personally responsible - not the club,” said Eddie.

Busters Golf Society - Lee Barber Memorial After the heavy rains during the past few days , we were relieved to see the sun shining for our monthly game.
Our winner received a litre bottle of Smirnoff along with a smaller copy of the shield that had been donated by Brian Jones.
This month we returned to Alenda golf course. I have to say that the course was as usual in excellent condition.
Our soccer card this month was won by Brian Jones who had selected Barcelona. No one had a two this month so our two’s pot has been rolled over.
The format for this competition was a stableford game to compete for the Lee Barber Memorial shield for the second time. After the game we returned to the Mini Golf bar close to Quesadas arches for our presentation a few sensibly priced beers along with sausage chips with bread and butter that were kindly prepared by the bars staff . Onto our results our N T P s were won by: the third hole Helen Beddows, the fifth was taken by John Rush. Ally Farquarson won the thirteenth and the sixteenth was won by Peter ( Jay ) Unsworth. all received a sleeve of three golf balls. Our runner up for the Memorial Shield, with thirty four points, was the ever consistent Phil Pettican who received Rioja wine. The winner this time, and holding the shield for the next year, was Barry Grinsell, narrowly beating Phil by a point scoring thirty five points.
Busters Golf Society is a small friendly group of like minded people who play on the first Friday of the month. Depending on the time of the year we generally have between sixteen and twenty four players. Over the four years since we first formed the society some of our original members have moved on, either returned to their country of origin or have ventured to pastures new, so we are looking for a few more members to swell our ranks. If you are interested in joining our society ( its free) then please email me Barry Grinsell at bustersgolfsociety@hotmail.com with your phone number and current handicap and I will get back to you within a couple of days

Lo Romero welcomes TMGS What a pleasant surprise it was N.T.P. Winners to be greeted with a warm welcome by very efficient staff, maybe things are changing for the better at Lo Romero! Very helpful Marshal whizzed through the local rules and then proceeded to start us off on time. The course was in great condition and this probably contributed to some members returning very good scores. After several months of coming close, Pat O’Dowd finally came in with the best score of his short golfing life to date, his 43 pts. Was by far enough to take 1st place in the Bronze category. Pat was followed in by Sandra Twentyman 37 pts. In 2nd place and Treasurer Alex Goslan secured 3rd place with 33 pts. Derek “I’ve lost my pitching wedge again” Sullivan managed to take 3rd place in the Silver category with just 26 pts. 2nd place went to the Viking Roger Nilsen with 33 pts. Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. How to GET STRONG This article is very much for the serious and competitive golfers amongst you because it involves a significant amount or work and effort on your behalf. To allow you to hit shots with effortless power while possessing the ability to play little finesse shots you will have to develop a fitness and diet regime that allows you to work on all parts of your body. In previous articles we have discussed the dietary requirements and this article concentrates and the elements required for fitness and strength. Any fitness routine that you have should include stretching, aerobics and weight training to increase not only strength but your stamina and endurance also. Firstly, allowing for your busy work or home schedule, you should try to run three to five miles a few times a week and if this not possible use an exercise bike. Both of these physical exercises will strengthen your legs, which provide the power in the golf swing. Secondly, remember that as you get older you swing shorter because the muscles in the upper back lose their elasticity so before any workout or practise session ensure that you limber up all key muscles and joints such as the lower back, hips, chest, shoulders, hamstrings, hands and fingers. Not many golfers realise the importance of hand flexibility and all you need to do is shake your hands like a swimmer does before competition. This will allow you to develop ‘soft’ hands for those touch shots around the green. Thirdly, consider weight training to keep your upper body fine-tuned, as it is the swings ‘engine’. Before you start remember not to overdue things and always use a ‘spotter’ when lifting heavy weights. Detailed below are just a few weight training exercises that you can do to stabilize muscles in specific areas of your body: Pull downs (for the upper back). Overhead Press (for shoulders). Horizontal bench press (for chest). Pushdowns or Dips (for triceps). Horizontal or Vertical wrist curls (for forearms).
Stomach crunch (for abdominal muscles). Remember to start out cautiously and do not take on more than you can handle. Building up your muscle strength when you are young will help you to maintain it when you are older. Just why should you develop such a fitness routine? Remember what your granny used to say to you “strong in body, strong in mind”. She was correct you know because with increased body strength and stamina you will not become weary and tired in the latter stages of your round and your thinking will also remain clear and focused. You therefore need to make your body compliment your mind to make the most of whatever golfing ability that you have. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. Torry celebrate return to home with a narrow win CD Torrevieja ................ 1
Walid was the first to congratulate Juanpe as Beltran and Booker join in the celebrations
Villena CF ....................... 0 It's been a year since Torry last set foot inside their spiritual home of Vicente Garcia stadium, and boy oh boy they certainly did it in style! Ok, so the pitch has numerous bare patches and appears to produce an uneven bounce, plus the grandstand will remain closed for the foreseeable future, but their diehard fans have desperately missed the intimate comfort it offers.
Keeper Buyo kept Torry in the game with a number of fine saves late on.
Their temporary home of Nelson Mandela stadium somehow lacks atmosphere, and even though the pitch and state of the art grandstand (minus health and safety considerations of course!) are of top quality, the fans have got their wish. This preferente division encounter was originally scheduled as an away fixture, but Villena requested a switch due to pitch improvements being incomplete. Manager Pedreno elected to retain the starting XI which had earned a useful start to the season the previous week. Following a slow start, Torry's Booker brought the game to life, when on 15 mins his fearsome drive from the edge of the box flew harmlessly over the top. Beltran went even closer on the half hour, but his shot from a similar distance eased the wrong side of the far post, as the hosts dominated proceedings. Moments later, Booker again found himself in space, but before he could pull the trigger, a well timed blocked tackle defused the danger. In the first half's closing stages, Beltran struck a glorious 25 yard free kick inches wide with keeper Leo beaten all ends up. Different half, same story, for on 55 mins full back Vicente blasted a drive, from which Leo acrobatically tipped aside for a corner. From the very next attack, Juanpe received the ball just inside his opponents half, went on a surging run before unleashing a drive which Leo made a complete
hash of, before watching in horror as what should have been a routine save, ended up with the ball trickling over the line. On the hour mark the visitors came close to equalizing, but Buyo performed heroics saving point blank from Chema, then from the rebound, Wilson forced another stunning block from Torry's keeper. Zaragoza came up from defence to try his luck on 68 mins, but his hard hit low drive was again dealt with efficiently. Villena made Torry work hard, counter attacking on the break, although a below par performance by ref Lopez Herrero and his 2 sadly lacking assistants, at times helped their cause! How the hell he saw fit to book Vicente and Verdu from the hosts,
Games for Grenfell Towers and Bradley Lowrey Time is not for wasting, even if you happen to be José Mourhino
T
here were two very special games of football taking place in England during the first weekend of September. On Saturday 1st the survivors of the Grenfell Tower block tragedy joined celebrities and firefighters at Queens Park Rangers' Loftus Road stadium, just a mile from the block in North Kensington. The game was organised by QPR chairman Tony Fernandes, director of football Les Ferdinand and Ferdy Unger- Hamilton of Columbia Records, the trio hoped the game would "inspire hope for those affected". On the following day, 215 miles north of Loftus Road, Katie Price led The Lowery Legends to victory against Bradley’s Blues in emotional clash at Goodison Park that celebrated the life of Bradley Lowery, the six year old boy who died in July after capturing the hearts of millions, when he was a mascot for Everton, Sunderland and England last year. Both of the matches had very real significance for everyone involved including the referee at both matches, having travelled over from Cabo Roig, Mark Halsey, who was representing the media platform www.you-are-the-ref.com In 2009, the former Premier League referee underwent chemotherapy to treat a cancerous tumour in his throat. He returned to refereeing in the top-flight in 2010, finally retiring from the league's list of Select Group Referees at the end of the 2012–13 season. Mark described the experience as overwhelming, applauding everyone who was involved in the two games. He especially picked out ‘The Special One’, José Mourinho, who came on as a second half substitute during the Game 4 Grenfell, saying that many people just don’t appreciate the compassionate side of the man. He said that refereeing the two games ‘was a genuine honour and

something that will stand out amongst the highlights of my refereeing career.’ Little compassion for José on the day however, as Mark booked the Manchester United manager for time wasting. Mark now moves on to the next project in his busy schedule as he looks forward with ‘You Are The Ref’ to refereeing the highest game of football ever played at the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro next month. This will be a WORLD RECORD and put the Steve Prescott Cancer Foundation, which it supports, into the record books. www.steveprescottfoundation.co.uk If you would like to donate toward the foundation follow the link to Mark at: www.justgiving.com/companyteams/SPFKili2017" Together we can all help to FIGHT CANCER !
whilst ignoring many cautionable incidents by the visitors, only he will know! Torry sub Flores was set up well by the hard working Manu Amores late on, but from close range, Leo snuffed out the danger. In stoppage time, Sergio sent over a delightful free kick, leaving Benja with a free header which he somehow contrived to head well over, as Pedreno's men hung on for a thoroughly deserved 3 points. This result sees Torry as one of 6 teams on maximum points after 2 games. For the 3rd week running they are at home, so make a note of Sun 17 Sep, ko 6pm, again at Vicente Garcia stadium, when Torry look to make it 3 wins on the bounce.
