Trophies shared around at LĂnea Directa Championships

The 2017 Linea Directa Valencian Championships came to a close on Tuesday afternoon. We had been treated to some high class finals, played this year under the enthusistic eye of two Orihuela councillors, and whilst not always close there was superb bowling.

The first finals to take place were the Mixed Fours & the Mixed Triples. These were able to take place together as no player was in both finals. In the all Vistabella Fours final the team of Lynne Bishop, Charlie Watkins, Les Barber & Eric Bishop started well & kept up the pressure against their clubmates Maureen Foulcer, Tony French, Martin Foulcer & Ian Kenyon with the final score 17-6 in favour of Erics team. T

he annual solidarity calendar, produced by Andy Ormiston, is once again being given free to over 30 groups and associations who can sell them on for their own charities funds, thus spreading a little light and happiness. It is free thanks to the generosity of the six companies who are paying for the graphics and printing of the calendar – ArocaSeiquer Abogados, Alamo Costa Blanca, Cambridge Currency, MAPFRE Brithol Insurance, Atlas Seguros brokers and Currencies Direct. The presentation was held in the lovely gardens of the main offices of ArocaSeiquer Abogados in Rojajuna. In his presentation Andy paid tribute to the volunteers representing so many other people who freely give of their time and experience for the benefit of others. The calendar is meant as a dedication to all the volunteers and professionals who help make the Costa Blanca a better place in which to live. The calendar is a tool by which they can reach out to others and perhaps involve them in the different tasks of so many associations. He stressed how their voluntary work is paramount as it fills a void in public services, reaching out to the most vulnerable in our society, whether healthy or homeless, the sick and dying, the lonely and so often forgotten victims of our society. Every year the solidarity calendar has a theme and this 13th edition is dedicated to the Costa Blanca with information about the place in which we live. Once again Andy said that he was indebted to the generosity of photographers who have donated their skills and photos – Phil Fryer, Antonio Garcia, Joaquin Carrion, Nicholas Garcia and John

Rook. Present was Eduardo Dolon Vice-President of the Alicante Diputacion and responsible for tourism on the Costa Blanca, who at the end commended Andy on providing such a lovely piece of propaganda for the Costa Blanca tourism. Without tourism the Costa Blanca would not be such a prosperous area. The cover photo is of Calpe and its famous rock of Penyal d’Ilfac, followed by two information pages containing a short report outlining some of the advantages of being here. The calender is well printed, colourful A3, 16-page calendar and as always there is a date box with notes of special fiestas, bank holidays in Spain, UK and Ireland, as well as the full moon and other astronomical information, not forgetting main public holidays in Spain, U.K. and Ireland. There is space for writing appointments and notes. Then underneath in each month, notes of some of the fiestas that may be of interest. This is rather limited as every town has fiestas of some sort or other. Andy apologies to anyone who feels missed out. As in previous years Miguel Angel Aroca, in conjunction with Currency Direct and Cambridge Exchange, used commissions obtained from transfers by clients, had cheques made out for charities and this year 20,600 euros was shared between five organisations of the Vega Baja. So each one received a cheque of 4,120 euros that went to ALPE the comarca training school for the disabled; 22q which is an association that supports those with rare diseases especially children; The Stroke Support association based in Benijofar; the San Jose orphanage in Orihuela and the Help Vega Baja association.

Project Hombre opens drug addiction centre People with problems of drug addiction now have a drug information and advice centre in San Javier run by the organisation Proyecto Hombre Murcia. The service operates from the Youth Centre, located on la avenida de la Aviación Española. The collaboration agreement with the City of San Javier will provide a municipal subsidy of 10,000 euros per year. The mayor, José Miguel Luengo, and the president of Proyecto Hombre Murcia, Tomás Zamora, signed the agreement last Thursday. Those interested in this service, which is offered free of charge, should call the Telephone number 968 28 00 34 and request an appointment in San Javier where they will be attended by the centre’s trained staff.

Update by British Consul – Orihuela Costa There will be a public meeting at the Orihuela Costa Ayuntamiento on Wednesday 11th October at 11am where the British Consul will provide an update on the situation re BREXIT. The councillor for overseas residents, Sofia Alvarez, will also take the opportunity to provide information on the Padron and the need for residents to ensure they are correctly registered. The meeting will provide a good opportunity to raise your concerns.

Banco Sabadell to move headquarters to Alicante due to uncertainty in Catalonia Independence could prove to be a major problem for banks headquartered in Catalonia

C

atalonia’s second biggest bank, Banco Sabadell is to move its registered office to Alicante. The board of directors has confirmed the move today, Thursday, in order to reverse the losses that it was suffering in the markets. During the course of the week the share price `plummeted by almost 10% although it began to recover on Thursday afternoon following the decision to relocate. The decision on Thursday by Banco de Sabadell to move its headquarters to Alicante came at the same time that CaixaBank, the biggest bank in the region and the country’s third largest, also considered domiciling outside Catalonia. The move will also ensure that whatever happens in Catalonia, the bank will remain under the protection of the ECB and the Bank of Spain. In this way it seeks to reassure not only its investors, but also depositors, who had grown increasingly concerned about the safety of their savings. Although the bank had also considered the possibility of moving its headquarters to Madrid, Alicante was finally chosen to prevent the

movement from being interpreted politically in Catalonia - although some formations such as the CUP have already called for a boycott of the bank. The change of registered address will not mean any transfer of staff to Alicante since the operational headquarters of the Sabadell will remain in Sant Cugat and Barcelona. Of course, the change will mean that the bank will in future pay its taxes in the Valencian Community. In addition, it will be an important impetus for the financial image of the province, which will return to the Spanish financial map, from which had disappeared after the collapse of the CAM bank. The president of Sabadell, Josep Oliu, made clear that the bank would do whatever was necessary to protect the interests of its shareholders, depositors and employees in view of the situation created in Catalonia. Thus, since the bank had always said that it would only take 24 hours or less is to move its headquarters outside Catalonia if necessary should independence be proclaimed. However, the bank has decided not to wait for this situation to occur due to the heavy punishment it was receiving on the stock exchanges and the uneasiness that had been generated among its clients. Banco Sabadell explains that the change aims to protect its customers and ensure legal certainty provided by the regulatory framework of the European Central Bank - CaixaBank has also announced that it will also leave Catalonia based on "the interests" of its clientele. The move will also ensure that the banks remain within the Eurozone and under the supervision of the European Central Bank, even if Catalonia does break away from Spain. Telecommunications company Euronics and Dental specialists Proclinic Expert have also announced they will be moving their operations out of Catalonia.

Organised by Casey Shaddock and Stevie Spit, local entertainers once again turned out in force to support 23 year old Tasha and the ZWAN Family Charity.

I know that both of the day’s hosts, Casey and Stevie, would like to thank all of the performers for their support as well as the event sponsors and everyone who went around with raffle tickets and the businesses and bars that donated raffle prizes.Well done to you all.

he AAN Charity based in La Marina have been very busy this week. One of the ladies, Chris Smith has recently been given the all clear for Breast Cancer. She said that to celebrate, she would like to have a pink ribbon tattooed somewhere upon on her person. Another friend Ann, announced that she too would support Chris and have a pink ribbon tattoo. The very brave ladies approached Steve Denning the tattoo artist in La Marina for his help. As this was a fund raising event he very kindly did both tattoos for free therefore ensuring that every cent could be donated to

the Oncology Unit at the hospital. Chris and Ann would like thank family and friends for their very generous donations. On Wednesday 20th September the ladies handed over 552 euros which was received by Dr. Salinas Carrasco, Medical Director, Dr. Toral Peña, Oncology Head of Service and Dra. Gonzalez Rival, Medical Oncologist. Monday the 18th September we held our

Prison for abuser who threw knives at wife and children es were part of their daily life although he too had also denounced his wife. In 2014 he reported her to the police after she stabbed him in the throat with a knife, which required medical attention at a local hospital, as he tried to strangle her. The judge dismissed the charge saying that he considered the action as legitimate defence. As well as the occasion that he threw a knife at the mother and daughter there were times when he punched the table, protesting because he did not like the food, and he even smashed a door. He also punched his wife in the stomach, threw himself on top of her and began to strangle her which was when she withdrew the knife from under her pillow and stabbed him in the neck. Cartagena's Criminal Court has sentenced a Torre Pacheco's resident to a year and nine months in jail, having found him guilty of the continued mistreatment of his wife and children over a period of several years. The couple had been married for 14 years, although their daughter was the result of an earlier relationship by the woman who said that she lived in a state of permanent terror, to the point that both she and her daughter slept with an axe and a knife under their pillows. She added that his violence, continuous threats and punch-

Following the stabbing he was admitted to hospital where he required surgery to close the wound. However the judge considered that she acted in self-defence and acquitted her of any responsibility. The Court said that they had allowed the accused to reduce his sentence in exchange for a full confession of the offenses, so that he has now been given one year and nine months imprisonment for habitual mistreatment of his wife and three years of ill-treatment s the two minor children. A fixed fine of 3,000 euros will be also be replaced by five months of community work and a course on gender equality. The accused has also been made to move at least half a kilometre away from his ex-wife and the children.

Orihuela offers to host waste transfer plant The mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, said on Wednesday that he is "ready to collaborate" with the Consorcio de Residuos de la Vega Baja in order to provide a long overdue solution to the ineffective waste management system that operates in the region. The solution, at least provisionally, involves the establishment of two waste transfer plants and the Oriolano mayor has said that Orihuela can be one of the municipalities to host one of the plants. "We have put forward various solutions, we have talked about sites and plans that are possible and that can be put into effect very quickly”, said the mayor who went on to criticise the dithering by The service has become expensive and inefficient

The Archaeological and History Museum (MAHE) of Elche (Alicante) will be converted into an Iberian Art Museum with the ultimate goal of hosting a permanent exhibition of the Lady of Elche. REIKI . . The wonderful energy of our universe INTRODUCTION There are as many paths to enlightenment as there are people. Reiki is one of those paths and each person who practices it will walk the path in their own way. No one person owns it – it has been given to all of us as part of the essence of our human being. Reiki is primarily perceived as a practice for healing the body, but it is also a method for healing the mind and spirit. Ultimately, Reiki has the power to reunite the trinity of Mind-Body-Spirit in their optimal state of harmony. All of us need to start the process of returning to that state of harmony. Reiki, with its power and simplicity and its methods for healing both the self and others, offers the way to start taking what I call the “the journey home” THE MEANING OF REIKI Reiki is one of the most ancient healing methods known to mankind. It originated in Tibet and was rediscovered in the early 1900’s by a Japanese priest named Dr Mikao Usui. The tradition of Reiki is referred to 2500-year-old writings in Sanskrit, the ancient Indian language. The Usui system of Natural Healing, named after Dr Usui, has been passed down by Reiki Masters since that time and is today practiced worldwide. As humans we have Universal Life Energy all around us and within us. The Japanese word Reiki consists of two syllables: “Rei” which describes the cosmic, universal aspect of this energy and “ki”, which means the fundamental life force flowing and pulsating in all living things. This life force energy is given to us at birth. We bring with us a certain amount of “ki” to life, and we use it up in the business of ordinary daily life. We then have to create a daily supply of new energy. When we are unable to make up for the energy consumption for a prolonged period, we may become physically or emotionally ill. If our supply of life force energy is very low and depleted, we suffer from physical, emotional and mental exhaustion, and tend to be much more irritable, bad-tempered and depressed than usual. WHAT IS REIKI? Reiki is a natural and simple healing method which allows you to absorb more life force energy. The Reiki method vitalizes your life force and balances the energies in your body. This natural healing energy flows in a powerful and concentrated form through the hands of the Reiki healer. The laying on of the hands directs the healing energy into the body of the receiver. The Reiki healer is used as a channel to conduct the Universal Life Energy. As a result, no personal energy is drawn or drained from the healer, who is simultaneously charged and strengthened. (The Reiki healer does not remove energy to give them theirs. Reiki energy balances and harmonizes – when there is an imbalance, there is a potential for illness) WHAT DOES REIKI DO? Reiki usually helps healing of all kinds and relieves pains and acute symptoms very quickly. Reiki makes it way to areas of imbalance during a treatment. It also has a positive influence on spiritual growth as it works on many levels, Physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being are all enhanced with Reiki energy. After a treatment, you may feel mentally much clearer about things and experience deep insights into particular questions or problems you are facing. Reiki then can help you to make the right changes and decisions in your life, if that is what you need or want to achieve. Reiki affects each person differently, but it always acts wherever the receiver needs it most. However, there are common effects that everyone experiences. Energy used up in everyday life is replaced, so that when you feel exhausted or drained, the imbalance, which may adversely affect you physically, emotionally and mentally, can be put right. If you suffer from stress, you may react with physical symptoms, such as headaches, stomach aches, frequent colds, kidney pains and general disorders. These symptoms are the expression of excessive negative stress, accompanied by an imbalance of the energy system. To relieve these symptoms your energy needs to restored. For example, a lowered immune system or a weak organ that is not functioning properly and needs recharging with extra energy. Reiki can balance the energies in the body, helping you to let go and relax, so reducing stress. At the same time, it promotes the development of positive reactions to

See full article at www.theleader.info

stressful situations. In other words, not only the symptoms but also the causes can be healed. Reiki strengthens and harmonizes the immune system. We continually use up life force energy without replacing it. Reiki helps us to replenish and add to our energy and, in this way, helps to create a healthy body

Reiki is a simple technique anyone can learn. Most people experience a huge leap in personal growth after receiving the attunements. This feeling of such loving healing energy is a truly uplifting and empowering experience. I WAS TOLD THAT REIKI WOULD CHANGE MY LIFE. IT DID. IT WILL CERTAINLY CHANGE YOURS

IS REIKI ALWAYS SAFE? The purpose of Reiki is to supply the body with additional energy which it can use for healing itself. Reiki can be used safely regardless of whatever illness the receiver is suffering from. Reiki makes no diagnoses and is intended to be used as a complementary healing method. In the case of acute disorders such as imflammations, influenza, colds, digestive disorders, gall or kidney stones, backaches and headaches, Reiki often acts very quickly and directly by easing the pain and accelerating healing. Reiki can also be applied as first aid as it stops bleeding in open wounds and has a very calming influence on the nervous system, particularly when people are in shock after an accident. With Reiki, you can also provide relief from allergies, arthritis and other chronic disorders. As Reiki supports and complements other medical and natural healing techniques, you can combine it with other treatments, for example with allopathic or homeopathic treatments, body therapies, counselling and speech-therapy and other psychological treatments. A Reiki healer is charged with energy and becomes a channel for Universal Life Energy. Reiki is a gift of the universe, and is available to us all.

A REIKI BREATHING EXERCISE If you want to experience a “taster” of Reiki before committing yourself to Reiki attunement or just to allow yourself to get an idea of what Reiki may feel like, try this exercise. The exercise will have the same relaxing effects as Reiki but without the added power and impact provided by the Universal Life Energy through attunement. Make yourself comfortable, either sitting down or lying on your back and close your eyes. Pay attention to your breath and follow its rhythm. Notice how it flows in and out. Now take three deep breaths Now put your hands on your body wherever you feel drawn to or where you feel tension. Use your intuition to locate the spot in your body that needs relaxation the most. Now direct your breath consciously and repeatedly to this place. Imagine that your breath is the Universal Life Energy which flows through you. Let it collect and expand under your hands. Notice how a feeling of relaxation and peace gradually spreads from that place beneath your hands throughout your entire body After a short while (about five minutes) place your hands on another part of your body. Once again breathe into your hands during the whole exercise. You may find that your breath changes in some positions as the body stores memories and experiences which may now be awakened. It is not necessary to consciously probe feelings or initiate stronger breathing. Just allow yourself to let go and plunge into this feeling of flowing. Move on to two further places on your body and charge them with energy Slowly open your eyes, stretch yourself, and return to your normal daytime consciousness. You will feel more relaxed, calmer and more centred. If you would like to experience the wonderful energy of Reiki as a treatment, please contact CHRISTINE QUINLAN ON 966 795 103 or email me on bodyharmony44@gmail.com

THE EFFECTS OF REIKI In summary, Reiki is all-embracing in its effect. It involves your mind, body and soul and then attempts to set all these aspects of your being into a harmonious balance. Your personal energy, as a giver, is not transmitted to the receiver during a treatment, you are merely a channel. If (without having attuned to Reiki) you try laying your hands on someone else, energy is still passed on, but at a much lower intensity than if you are attuned to Reiki. This is because Reiki is a highly powerful vibrating force, or light energy. While the Universe Life Energy flows through you, as the giver, during the treatment, it is also fortifying and harmonizing you at the same time. You may also experience Reiki as a force which brings you more closely into contact with yourself, opening you up and allowing you to be more loving with yourself and with others. It is a unifying force which brings you closer to a condition of oneness and connection with the “whole” So let me summarise the many benefits: Balances the organs and glands and their bodily functions Releases blocks and suppressed feelings Promotes natural self-healing Adapts to the natural needs of the receiver Balances the energies in the body Enhances personal awareness and helps meditative states Relaxes and reduces stress Promotes creativity Strengthens life force energy Treats symptoms and causes of illness Heals holistically Strengthens the immune system Relieves pain Clears toxin

Cycling the Costa’s for charity T

he 24th of October will see two riders leaving Gibraltar and attempting to ride the 800km along the coast to their homes near Alicante on the Costa Blanca. Father and son, Dave and Mitch Bull will be camping at night and hope to complete the journey in less than two weeks meaning they need to cycle about 75km on average per day, and along the southern coast of Spain that means a good few hills to climb! The pair are no strangers to adventure having kayaked 52km down the Rio Segura in November 2015 and last year saw them riding motorbikes around the perimeter of Spain for their chosen charities; the Samaritans in Spain and Spanish cancer research (AECC). Why those charities? Well Dave is the patron of the Samaritans here in Spain and Mitch has seen a close family member lose their life recently to cancer of which he says, "I ink dance has touched most families at some point and I wanted to try and help sufferers and their families in some way." The two of them will call into the charities offices in Playa Flamenca (Pink Ladies) and Punta Prima (Samaritans) when they finally arrive in the area at the start if November. Again they are being well supported by local businesses both on the Costa Blanca and the Costa del Sol who include; Cooking for Languages, Gran Alacant Services, Coys rents a car, Hamiltons Bakehouse, Club Cars and Studio Nemo. Dave also added that he'd like to thank the support of local press, especially The Leader, for their annual contribution to the cause by helping to publicise and therefore raise funds for the two charities. The route From Gibraltar the two riders will hug the coast passing through Estepona, Marbella and Fuengirola and then on to

Malaga. From their they'll pass through Nerja, Motril, Almeria and San Jose where they will turn a sharp left and start heading north via Mojacar, Mazarron, Cartagena and Torrevieja. It’s from Torrevieja they'll leave for the last leg of the trip to Alicante and the guys welcome anyone who wants to join them for all or part of the ride. They are also welcoming Michael from Marbella when they pass through and he will ride with them for the morning after seeing their story and asking if he could go with them part of the way. Dave added that if anyone else wants to join them for a part of the ride (it could be as little as an hour or as long as a morning or afternoon) then they would be very welcome. The bikes they'll be riding are hybrid models with 29" wheels (for the cyclists among you) and they'll be lakes with around 25kg each of equipment including tents, sleeping bags, cooking equipment, medical kit, devices such as phones, cameras and battery chargers. They hope to have a little room left for some clothes too! You can follow them on their journey with regular update in The Leader and on their Facebook page, 'The Long Ride Home' where you'll find links to the charities for donations. Dave also added that a good number of bars and businesses in Gran Alacant also have sponsor forms and collection fine for those wishing to donate that way, again check the Facebook page for a list of which ones are supporting them. We’ll have more on their story before they go and updates while they are on the road. They'll also, as they did last year, add some video blogs to their Facebook page so keep an eye out for those at the end of each day as they summarise their adventure.

DAVE AND MITCH BULL WILL SET OFF ON 24 OCTOBER Their chosen charities are the Samaritans in Spain and the Pink Ladies Spanish Cancer Research (AECC)

‘Letters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

Animals need our help too

I

t has been a distressing week in Gran Canaria. A major fire broke out in the heavily forested centre of the island, which is in an area that we often visit. It is a region that few tourists can be bothered to visit, for which residents are grateful, since not only is it an area of spectacular natural beauty, but an area of peace and tranquillity. It is well away from the pressures of the modern world, the sun beds, fast food restaurants and bars in the busy tourist area in the south of the island. Not only the Gran Canaria fire, but many other news stories have been particularly distressing over the last few weeks. Tragedies, such as the Grenfell Tower fire, flooding in Bangladesh, horrendous hurricanes in the Caribbean, volcanic eruptions in Italy and the horrors of ‘ethnic cleansing’ in Myanmar, have made an impact upon all but the most cold and detached personalities. As we watch these horrors unfold in faraway places in the comfort of our own living rooms, it is often difficult to identify with the pain and suffering that ordinary people experience when faced with such disasters. Although, I understand that the suffering and welfare of people come first, I know that I am not the only one to be distressed about animals caught up in such disasters. There is rarely any mention of animals caught up in flooding, fire and other tragedies that appear on

our television screens, and little is ever reported. It seems that animals suddenly become invisible during times of crisis, yet as all animal lovers will know, they have become part of our lives and highly important. Dogs, cats, horses, donkeys, birds and reptiles, as well as farm animals often perish in horrendous circumstances during these periods of exceptional tragedy, and it seems that they are forgotten and left behind during the pressure of rescue efforts. This point was brought home to me this week whilst reporting on the forest fire, which quickly got out of control on the island where I live. The fire spread quickly and destroyed many hectares of land, involving five municipalities. A number of villages and many people were evacuated. Thanks to the brave and selfless efforts of the emergency services, it appears that only one life was lost. The woman who died was an expat, originally from Sweden, who had made her life on our beautiful island. She refused to leave her home, preferring to stay and look after her animals. Her charred body was later discovered outside her home. One can only imagine her terror, as she was consumed by the flames. It is often difficult to identify with the hundreds and thousands of people in distress that appear on our television screens, but it is the distress of small groups and individuals that help us to understand their pain and suffering. For me, it was the dying moments of this terrified woman that has stayed in my mind. I did not know her, but the fact that she bothered to stay behind to care for her animals tells me a lot about her compassion and humanity, and I suspect that she is someone who I would have liked. Spain and the Canary Islands are often rightly criticised for attitudes to animals, which can often appear casual, uncaring and exploitative. Over the years that I have lived in Spain and the Canary Islands, there have been many times when I have wished that we had the equivalent of the UK’s RSPCA, PDSA and many other dedicated animal charities helping to protect animals in Spain. Sadly, this is not the case, and much is left to hard-stretched police, as well as dedicat-

ed individuals, to help to relieve the plight of animals suffering in this country. There is some good news to help to soothe the rawness of this latest tragedy on the island for animals that need veterinary help. The Veterinary Department of the University of Las Palmas is currently helping animals that have suffered, but escaped from the fire at a centre in the town of San Mateo. Volunteers from the College of Vets at the University of Las Palmas are offering a 24-hour service to help these animals. Dogs and cats can be taken directly to a central animal point for care and attention. It is often said that a society can be judged by its attitude towards animals. I have always believed this to be true, and in these polarised and often selfish times, it is heart-warming that the needs of animals are also being considered following a tragedy that has affected all precious life. t may only be October but rehearsals are well under way for STUDIO32’s winter show. This talented company will be performing a wonderful stage adaptation of that Christmas film favourite, Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas”. The show contains some all-time classic songs including “Blue Skies”, “Sisters”, and of course the Bing Crosby title number “White Christmas”. Bev McEwan (pictured) plays the role of Martha Watson, an ex-professional singer/entertainer who is the concierge – and much more - at General Waverly’s hotel in Vermont. But what Martha really wants to do is perform again, and as her solo song title says – “Let me sing and I’m happy!”.

The character of Martha is quite over-thetop, but Bev has excellent comic timing and is rising to the challenge and complexities of this role. Bev has been with Studio32 for a number of years, playing lead roles such as Ado Annie in their production of “Oklahoma!”, Mrs Fezziwig in “A Christmas Carol”, and more recently the lead role of Mabel Normand in “Mack and Mabel”. Studio32 are once again supporting the San Fulgencio Alzheimer’s Association with this production, as well as other local charities. So why not help them raise money for worthy causes whilst enjoying a terrific night’s entertainment.

Show dates are Wednesday November 29th to Saturday December 2nd at the Cardenal Belluga Theatre in San Fulgencio. All performances start at 7.30pm, and doors open at 7pm. Reserved seating tickets are now on sale, priced at 10 euros each. You can book your tickets by emailing tickets@studiothirtytwo.org, calling their ticket line on 602 47 47 93, or from the following outlets: Cards & More, La Marina 966 79 09 54 The Card Place, Benijofar 966 71 32 66 Tickets are sure to sell fast so be sure to get in early and book your seat!

Junction Jackals v El Capitan 6 -6 [last season 8-4] Based on recent meetings between these two teams, this was always going to be a close result - and so it turned out to be. The trebles went the way of the visitors with John Walker leading the way - his 140 and 125 in the second leg and a fine 128 (T18, T14, D16) finish in the third set up an early 2 - 1 lead. The Jackals then came roaring back and took 5 straight legs – all the doubles and the first two singles. Even John Walker’s 180 in the third double was not enough to stem the tide. The first singles match deserves some mention Ed Klimonis hit 60 in his first 6 throws but lost to Andy Rutter who took out 70 in the nick of time. All seemed set for a home win – after all only one leg was needed – but it was not to be. Up stepped that man John Walker to see off Lee Maiden and the rest of the Jackals succumbed in a very nervy final few frames. Everyone had a chance to win but David Rotella, Vycka Bobinas and Aroldis Klimonis saw El Capitan home for a well-earned draw. There was nothing to split these two teams last season and the story remains the same this year. Men of the match were Andy Rutter for the Jackals

and inevitably John Walker for the away side. Phil de Lacy

Pint Depot Queens get ‘2-2-2!’ this week (legs, not match points sadly)

Porter House Bees v Witherspooners 3-9 [last season 5-7] We were only 4 players with Terry and Mel in UK and young Harvey working. Witherspooners had a full team and full of good spirit. Although only 4 we managed to hold our own mostly getting down to doubles. Witherspooners played really well with quick finishes. I think they were relieved by the absence of Graham and Tim. Gilly Kirby Hub Hellraisers v Amigo’s Misfits 6-6 [last season 7-5] The first home game of the season for the Hub Hellraisers always promised to be a loud and messy affair and with the help of the Misfits we didn’t disappoint. The Hellraisers romped through the treble and double matches taking all 6. With Lesley Dolling taking the first game on D6, Super Sue Spiers notching up the 2nd win with an impressive D17. Ali Scammell then stepped up with a third double, finishing on D2. On to the Doubles games with a shock D3 from Sarah Arnold to win the first game. Our Captain Cheryl McGlynn took the next on D1 and Lesley stepped up with a D1 to take the final Doubles game. The Hellraisers were on a roll or so it seemed, maybe it was one too many sausage rolls, chicken wings or Chocolate Eclairs at the half time mega buffet, but the wheels came off for The Hellraisers! The Amigos Misfits took all six singles games with Pat Kilcourse breaking the Hellraisers winning streak with a D2. Next Sonya Cooper stepped up with a D1, Peter Lowe taking the 3rd Singles game with D7, Dickie Hunt took the next for the Amigos Misfits with a D1. Ronnie Farrel stole the next on D2 and. Our Brave captain Cheryl stepped up to play the make or break match for the HellRaisers, “No Pressure our Chez” but lost to a very good darter, Billy Naylor finishing on a fantastic D19. Oh well as the Hellraisers say “You cannot win them all, but one win would be nice” a great night was had by all with the match ending on a 6-6 draw. We thank The Hub for providing the best venue and look forward to playing the rest of the season. Sarah Arnold Pint Depot Queens v Porter House 2-10 [last season same result] Well, the PDQ were back as loud and jolly as ever- the porterhouse are a great team and a good night was had by all. Two very exciting things occurred: 1: Yvonne hit a 180 - unfortunately this was during practice & could not be counted BUT should be recognised .... it can be done! 2: Little Pete needed 126 .... T19, T3 and then his team mate shouted ‘BULL!’, so he hit it ... everyone clapped until they realised he needed 60 not 50, Oops! But team mate Jeff to the rescue who got D x 5 Marie was named (wo)man of the match for PDQ - getting S19- D20 in the third treble match of the night and then in the last single

Marie got D4 playing against Yvonne - We Got 2 , 2 , 2 could be heard as far as Torrevieja ! Sid was man of the match for Porter House, playing some steady darts and for checking out on D20-D20 Some other high scores from Ray -135 and Marie 121. Debbie Wright Las Rosas Bullies v Junction Jaguars 10-2 [last season 11-1] The Jags got off to a flying start, taking the first treble courtesy of Super Hilda with S1-D1. Simone’s first throw in the 2nd trebles was 133 which further rattled the Bullies but they managed to pull themselves together for the next 6 games on the trot despite the ladies getting down to the double too. Luscious Lisa Ivill won her single with D16 to give us our 2nd point and was awarded MOTM for the Jags, Cris Montes was awarded it for Las Rosas. High scores worth a mention: Adrian Buitkaht 2 x 100; John Spencer 121, 100, Lesley EAGLES! 119, 135. Simone de Lacy. Match cancellations: There have been 3 match cancellations with requests to reschedule so far and we are only in week 2! The committee take a dim view of this and met on 6th October to discuss the individual circumstances. We would advise all captains that games must be played if you have a minimum of 4 players available. If a team cannot fulfil their fixture then they should notify the oppositions captain AND the committee in plenty of time (days, not hours), giving full details for why they cannot play. Captains, please plan for your future fixtures and organise your team accordingly. Sign on new players if you think you are going to be short, play with only 4 players if necessary or forfeit the game to the opposition 7-0. Non-cancelling teams, if the opposition has given you fare notice for a VERY good reason to reschedule, then you must give two dates within the following fortnight which you can play (Rule 7,L )iii). Refusing to reschedule to any other day than a Thursday will unfortunately see you lose your points too as new rules were brought in to protect the non-cancelling team if they cannot raise a full team on any other day of the week for a rescheduled match......Euronics Darts League Committee.

The Vistabella team led at the halfway stage 8 shots to 4 but only scored on 1 more end with the Emerald Isle trio winning 22-11. The following day we started with Mens & Ladies Pairs Finals. In the Mens Pairs the San Luis air of Roy Cordell & Russell Marks dominated the match against Peter Whitehall & Eric Bishop of Vistabella. Both Roy & Russell were on top form and with one end to spare took the title by 21 shots to 11. In the Ladies Pairs it was 2017 National Pairs Champions Gail Willshire & Lynn Greenland were looking to make it a double and after 3 ends they led 6-0. But the Emerald Isle pair of Mary Whitelock & Ann Marie Stevenson got into their stride and at the halfway stage led 8-7. With 3 ends to play they were leading 17-8 and despite losing the remaining ends took the title 17-12. In the afternoon the premier events of the Mens & Ladies Singles Finals took place. In the Ladies final Peta Rhodes of Quesada played first class bowls against her opponent Mary Dyer of San Miguel. Even when Mary held a count Peta would slot the crucial bowl in to take shot. In the Mens Singles Colin Lindgren of Emerald Isle played 2016 National Singles Champion Martin Foulcer of Vistabella. For the first 12 ends the players traded shots and the score stood at 12-12. San Luis Bowls Club Valencian Championships by Sheila Cammack Well done to all this year’s champions, but especially to our San Luis Bowls Club members; CONGRATULATIONS to Roy Cordell and Russell Marks on WINNING the MEN’S PAIRS in a very emphatic style. In their semi-final on Saturday 30th at Emerald Isle v John Pooley & Dennis Birkett (EI), Roy and Russ had a great game both drawing beautifully to take the lead and not relinquish it. The final on Tuesday 3rd was an even more impressive performance of controlled, consistent bowling and some days everything just goes right for you. Their opponents; Peter Whitehall & Eric Bishop (VB) played well but just couldn’t stop the tide. It was a wonderful game to watch, no fuss just a great display of bowls from both of them. After all the excitement we can now get ourselves up and running for next week and the start of the winter season. For further information contact the Club Captain - June Jones 966 188 920 or 691 903 773. Checkout the club website at: www.sanluisbowls.byethost7.com

Fourteen members and four guests made for an even number of competitors for the annual Captain v Vice-Captain trophy last Tuesday, played in a Ryder Cup Matchplay format. The result was a resounding success for the Captain's team, who almost swept the board with eight victories - with the ninth being an honorable tie between the Captain and Vice-Captain. Any suggestion of bias towards the Captain's choices was swiftly discounted(by the Captain). Nearest the Pins, Hole 5 - John Wilby, Hole 9 - John O'Brien Picture shows members of the Captain's winning team. If anyone would like to join our Society, we play at El Plantio Golf Club on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. We use both courses - the Par 3 nine hole course and the main 18 hole course, so we cater for all abilities. The membership rates are very competitive, so call for more details. Anyone who wishes to play in the Society as a guest or join as a new member, contact Ian Henderson on 966 716 616 or 636 116 230.

Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. Around and about the Golf Courses Vistabella Since the original opening the Vistabella golf course ,which was designed by Ryder Cup player Manuel Pinero, has been an 11 hole layour caused by planning application problems and the financial crisis in 2009. We are delighted to announce that as from 2nd January 2018 the course will open the other 7 holes making it a full 18 hole layout and the management will price the green fees competitively and I am sure that the course will be one of the best and most popular in the area. Alicante Through 2016 and partly in 2017 the course staff have struggled with the condition of the greens on the excellent Alicante course. As a result they are considering changing the grass on the greens in June and July 2018 which will result in the course only being a 9 hole course in these months, priced for the inconvienience and a final decision will be taken about these plans by 31st October 2017. La Peraleja The La Peraleja course was opened as an exclusive venue many years ago and as many local golfers are aware the course fell into a poor condition with severe problems with the fairways due to salt contamination in the soil which ultimately resulted in the course closure in 2016. We can now report that the course, clubhouse and various plots of land have now been sold and we await further information regarding the future of the golf course and any re-opening plans but there will surely be a lengthy period of time to recover the course condition but will try to keep you informed of any progress.

We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. They actually live a couple of doors from each other! Two of these Ladies were badly injured at the time and had their handbags stolen. It is an opportune time to warn everyone that in various areas in Torrevieja, Playa Flamenca and surrounding districts, that recently the same thing is happening again. Muggers are hiding in bushes, waiting for a convenient opportunity to attack, grab handbags and so on. I am asking everyone to ensure that no-one walks home on their own because we are so vulnerable to this kind of thing. Please take care. Pam Horton 96 571 0066. Email: Dartess501@gmail.com

EL RASO GOLF SOCIETY 24 members travelled to Font del Llop to play our monthly Stableford competition. The conditions were good and the greens were smooth and fast. The scores recorded were very close and winning positions were decided on count back. The nearest the pins went to: hole 3 Steve Sayers, holes 8 and 16 Monique Reeve, holes 12 and 17 Dave Nicholls. The best front nine was Paul Manning, while the back nine was won by Jan Shorley. In third place was Lauraine Walker, second place went to Fred Reeve also with 31 and winner of the day with a creditable 32 points was Morag Turner. Our next game is on Friday 27 October at our home course La Marquesa.
