Just 70 jobs secure on San Javier - Corvera transfer
A
lthough the physical transfer has not yet begun, the plan is now being put into place, with Aena taking the first steps to end airport activity at the San Javier facilities and move them across to Corvera, where the new regional airport is located. The new airport has been virtually ready to go for five years
but it is only now that the management company has been appointed, with Mariano Menor MuĂąoz, until recently the director of the Valencia airport, being put in charge of the move. Continued on Page 2

The new title given to Menor is that of Operative Transition Director of Corvera. Having qualified as an aeronautical engineer at the Polytechnic University of Madrid Menor has been Director of Valencia airport and has extensive experience in the airport environment. He started with Aena in 1991 and has managed the airports of Elche (Alicante), Malaga, Gran Canaria, Palma de Mallorca and Valencia, all of them a major part of the tourist environment. Menor has also been Director of Airport Technical Exploitation responsible for drafting, implementing and updating Self-protection and emergency plans; Airport manuals; Security programmes; Technical procedures and instructions for the different airport areas, as well as the manager of Aena Internacional, so he is seen as being the ideal candidate to take on the challenge of directing the transition, and the transfer of the airport activity from San Javier to Corvera. As such Aena has announced that it is now entering "a transition stage that will be closely coordinated with all of the agencies involved in order to coordinate the transfer of equipment, personnel and operations with the least possible impact," exactly 50 years after San Javier airport was first opened, on August 21, 1967.
San Javier is among the most profitable within the Aena group and it has received several International awards in recent years, for it’s efficiency and it’s management. At the same time the President and CEO of Aena, Jaime García-Legaz, confirmed that the current AENA employees at San Javier airport will be transferred to a new position at Corvera, should they wish to move. All those with over 3 years employment will also have their seniority guaranteed. "The fact that we are going to transfer union members to the new airport should provide peace of mind for the future of all Aena workers," GarciaLegaz said. But whilst the guarantee will secure the future of the 70 Aena staff what is still not known is exactly what will happen to the 450 other workers of the auxiliary companies. Although ‘the Platform for the Airport of San Javier’ represents all employees they were not invited to the meeting that GarcíaLegaz had with the Aena employees just prior to the end of the year. The spokesman of the Platform, Santiago Pina, expressed his concern "because we do not have any information, neither from Aena nor from our own companies". With the transfer, the question arises at to what Aena will do with the contracts that it currently has in force with many companies which provide services in San Javier, some of which still have several years outstanding.
Aena have announced the closure of their operaFront page image:www.noticieromarmenor.com tions at San Javier in the year in which the Mar Menor Airport has The experienced surpassed one million passengers, Mariano Menor with an increase of almost 9% over Muñoz will be those that it handled in 2016. managing the According to Aena’s calculations, move to Corvera an airport of medium size only starts to be profitable when it reaches half a million users a year, a level that would have been difficult to achieve in Corvera if San Javier had remained open. As a result of the impending closure of the airport, many politicians and residents say that it is now almost certain that the Mar Menor will face major tourist and economic problems.
National Police and Guardia demand wage parity with Policia Local Did you know that Local Police receive in the region of 700 euro per month more than their Guardia and National Police collegues despite being said to have far less public value? As such, representatives of the National Police and Guardia Civil, members of la Asociación Justicia Salarial de Policías y Guardias Civiles (JUSAPOL), held a number of rally’s in Orihuela city over the holiday period, where they appealed for public support in their demands for parity in the salary structures of their two organisations with the Local Police. They were collecting signatures at the Glorieta 'Gabriel Miró' in Orihuela to demand that their salaries be brought in line, especially with the autonomous and local police. Currently, local police, especially in the larger cities, earn an average of 2,100 euros per month, whilst the national police officers are paid rather less, at approximately 1,400 euros per month. But it is not only the wages, but all the add ons, extra payments, overtime and suchlike. As one demonstrator, José Vicente explained, "being relat-
President of Orihuela PP, Damaso Aparicio, signing the petition last week ed to basic salary, the retirement pay of a national guard officer is about 1,000 euros, whilst that of a local agent is almost double". "It is not fair that there are first, second and third division policemen, and that the police with the most responsibilities, and those most valued by the public, are those that are considered the least important when it comes to remuneration.” This is just one initiative in the Union’s drive for parity as it sets out in a bid to collect half a million signatures in it’s demand for an equal wage and salary structure between all three security agencies.

Son drives 80 year old mother 75km to beg on Murcia streets
D
espite being in possession of a pension, owning land, a house and two cars, a man from Orihuela has been driving his 80 year old mother into Murcia City, on a daily basis, where she has been earning money by begging on the city streets. He would regularly drop her off at the Avenida de la Libertad in the city centre where she would sit in filth, for hours at a time, begging from passers-by, but unbeknown to them both, the woman, who also suffers from Osteoarthritis, was being watched by members of the social services. However, it was not until Christmas Eve that they approached her with offers of assistance and when they did so the woman refused to collaborate and would not identify either herself of her son. She was subsequently approached by the Local Police but refused to cooperate with them also, at which point the National Police were called in. Thankfully they were eventually able to identify her through her fingerprints when they found that she was a resident of Orihuela. José Morales, head of the Murcia City Social Care Service (SEMAS) said that they had been watching the woman for some time as she was picked up by a car when the shops closed at the end of each working day. He said that she walked across and got into the car without any problem. The car was driven by her son, a man in his forties. It would seem that they then drove back to their home in Orihuela. When finally interviewed, the son, who was asked about the begging activities of his mother, said that he does not work because he is handicapped. He added that because the percentage of handicap is very low he does not receive any financial benefits. The situation is such, said Morales, that this lady is receiving a pension, because of her age, in addition to which she owns a house, two vehicles and land. Murcia Social Services thanked the police for their help in intervening in the case, however, neither the mother nor the son were arrested.
Neither the son nor his 80 year old mother have been charged with any offence Murcia SEMAS contacted the Orihuela Social Services, directed by Sabina Goretti-Galindo, for their help. The councillor confirmed that they have now opened an investigation into the case. “Orihuela Social Services have been told of the case by their counterparts in the city of Murcia. The corresponding protocol has now been initiated and enquiries are being made prior to the preparation of a report and the decision as to appropriate measures," said the council.
Rajoy signs agreement to increase national minimum wage
S
igned over the holiday period by Mariano Rajoy, the Minister for Employment and Social Security, Fátima Báñez, the presidents of CEOE, Juan Rosel, and CEPYME, Antonio Garamendi, and the general secretaries of UGT, Josep María Álvarez, and CCOO, Unai Sordo, the agreement seeks to help "the positive effects of the economic recovery reach everyone", said Mariano Rajoy. "We don't want anyone to be left behind and that's why we're going to improve wages, starting with the lowest", he said. According to estimates, 530,000 people will benefit from this 4% increase to the national minimum wage in 2018, explained the President of the Government, for whom this agreement successfully combines "generosity and responsibility". Rajoy explained that the agreement represents "another step"
towards fulfilling the pact reached between the Government of Spain and the Socialist Party to raise the national minimum wage by 8%. The target is to reach 850 euros, almost 12,000 euros a year in 14 payments, by 2020. This goal, said the President of the Government, is "reasonable and sustainable" because the national minimum wage increase will be maintained provided that economic growth stands at no less than 2.5% and at least 450,000 jobs are created per year. Mariano Rajoy believes that these conditions are "very prudent, because they are below what we are achieving already". In this regard, he recalled that, since 2014, "we have posted growth in excess of 3% and have created over half a million jobs per year".

Individual attention provides extra comfort for cancer patients
Removing the loose stones along the embankment at Aguamarina beach
Orihuela spends 240,000 euro on repairing coastal embankments
O
rihuela council is spending 240,000 euros on work that will repair many of the embankments running along the coastal walkways from which there are frequent landslides causing problems to many of the paths and beaches. The most recent work got underway last week along the slopes at Aguamarina beach, following authorisation from the General Directorate of Coasts, who will be footing the bill. The works consist of cleaning the slope, building a masonry wall to avoid continuous erosion by rainwater, and installing a triple-twisted bollard mesh on both sides of the wall to contain any possible
detachment of stones rolling onto the beach. The works at Aguamarina have a budget of 52,713 euros and will be ready in two weeks. These works complete those already carried out on the cliffs along Cabo Roig, costing 187,000 euros, that had necessitated the closure of the promenade along Cala CapitĂĄn for more than 3 years. The councillor for the beaches, Luisa BonĂŠ, said that "as the technical services became aware of the existence of new landslides, a contract was raised to repair the stretch of the slope that had eroded and that posed a risk, both to those who walked along the promenade and to those who releaxed on the beach."
Arrested for stealing from 9 cars The Guardia Civil has arrested a 41-year-old Spanish man in Guardamar del Segura following thefts of goods from nine vehicles. The thefts were all carried out around mid-day with a similar "modus operandi" which consisted of smashing one of the quarter lights in order to gain access to the interior and steal anything of value that was left inside the vehicle. From one of the vehicles, the suspect stole documentation which allowed him to open a telephone contract, using the data gathered from the victim, with which he managed to obtain a mobile terminal worth about 800 euros. One of the vehicle owners surprised him while he was committing one of the robberies and, although he managed to flee the scene, the description provided to the agents, enabled his subsequent identification and arrest. Once located by the agents, he was arrested and a warrant was obtained to search his home, during which the Guardia found various stolen objects as well as the tools that he used to break into the vehicles. After being placed at the disposal of the judicial authority, a local magistrate refused bail so he was committed to prison awaiting trial.
When a patient hears the word cancer there are many immediate problems including a whole host of questions, anxiety, expectations and fears!
is the one who is there during their most difficult and intimate moments in life, the one at their bedside, providing education, support and encouragement.
As such, in realising the especial support needed by many patients, in March 2017, the management at Torrevieja Hospital appointed a dedicated Care Manager in their oncology department, since which time Ana Navarro has personally dealt with 538 cases that have benefitted from her individual attention.
They are also the ones who act behind the scenes, communicating with doctors, coordinating care and keeping their patients safe and informed.
The field of oncology nursing, in particular, is probably one of the most challenging and rewarding in nursing. For those with cancer, an oncology nurse
"I help to resolve doubts about recommended treatments, disease management and lifestyles. I help patients in consultations, then I follow them to try to anticipate any problem that may arise, "explains Ana Navarro. She is also there to provide compassion for her patients,
and to keep them calm in the midst of a difficult situation. She often forms relationships with her patients and is available to provide continuous care, both in person and by telephone. The hospital management say the introduction of the post has proved to be a great success, serving as the first line of communication, and helping to coordinate the many aspects of a patient’s care throughout their cancer treatment. Also, in having an efficient, immediate and easily accessible telephone service, it also considerably reduces the anxiety of patients and the number of visits to the emergency room.

olice in Pilar de la Horadada say that in recent days they have found the possible poisoning of stray animals in a number of different locations in the town. All seem to have suffered symptoms that are appropriate to dying by the ingestion of poison. As such the Councilor for Animal Health, José Francisco Albaladejo, warned last week of his suspicions, saying that it is "a very serious attack on public health." In describing it as extremely serious, he said that these types of act are punishable by fines of up to 18,000 euros, also announcing that the council is working "to change the ordinance and toughen the sanctions even further." On behalf of the Department of Health and Animal Protection, Albaladejo appealed to residents who are concerned about the welfare of street animals not to take such drastic measures, but please notify
his department, which will then take appropriate measures to resolve the situations. He also asked anyone who might be aware of poisons being placed in public areas to please inform the Local Police and the City Council, because they constitute a serious danger to both animals and to children.

Ever wondered who the Lady is on the bench? One of the most pleasant strolls along the Torrevieja coastline can be had on the Paseo Maritimo Juan Aparicio de Torrevieja which links the Paseo Dique de Levante, the wooden walkway that takes walkers out above the sea, the Paseo de la Libertad and the Playa del Cura beach. Refurbished in 1999 it enjoys a number of delightful beachfront restaurants and bars as well as being used extensively for recreational and cultural events. A few yards to the north of the dique is situated one of the most famous sculptures in the whole of the region, the Monumento a la Mujer del Pescador, a lonely lady looking wistfully out to sea, and quietly overlooking the rocky setting of Cala del Moro. The monument has been in place for a little over 40 years where it pays homage to local mariners and the fishing traditions of the municipality. It is the statue of Bella Lola, the beautiful Lola, whose husband Antonio sailed out from Torrevieja aboard the fishing vessel "La Gaviota". Antonio, along with his nine shipmates were never seen again. The boat was lost at sea and despite a widespread search it was finally given up as on 12 May 1919. But Bella Lola refused to accept his loss, sitting on the rocky outcrop day after day, looking out to sea and patiently awaiting his return. She remains there today as a symbol of those many thousands of
women who have watched their husbands head out to sea, never to return. Now she has become one of the most popular tourist attractions, and photographed sculptures, on the coast, bringing many holidaymakers into the area as they seek to add her to their holiday snaps. During the twinning of Torrevieja with Oviedo 9 years ago a replica of La Bella was presented to the Asturian city. La Bella Lola (Beautiful Lola) is also, for many, the Hymn of the Sailor. The lyrics describe the beauty of a woman and the surrounding sea. The author is unknown and it is said that it is nothing more than a folk song.

Learning how to reverse properly dominates list of 2018 new year’s resolutions for drivers
C
hecking the car, phone usage, road rage, speeding and conquering fear all make the top 10 resolutions for UK motorists, according to research from Young Driver When it comes to the UK’s motorists setting their New Year’s Resolutions, learning how to reverse properly claims three of the top 10 spots, according to new research. After committing to checking tyres and oil levels more regularly, which is a resolution for one in four drivers, learning how to parallel park properly is second on the list, with 17 per cent of drivers wanting to perfect the skill. To “get better at reversing” was something one in seven felt they needed to do in 2018, whilst reversing into a parking bay was a worry for one in eight. However, a confident one in five (18 per cent) felt they were such a perfect driver, there was nothing they’d need to work on or change next year. The research was conducted by Young Drver, the UK’s largest pre-17 driving school, to see what seasoned drivers felt they hadn’t ever got to grips with properly since they took to the roads – or what bad habits they’d picked up. Worryingly, using a phone behind the wheel still emerges as a major concern, with 13 per cent of drivers saying their resolution is to switch it off when they’re behind the wheel. One in 10 (11 per cent) admit to checking messages whilst at traffic lights, and eight per cent say they need to stop using their handset whilst driving. Fear is also a common barrier for drivers, which they’d like to combat in 2018 – conquering nervousness about driving on motorways is a challenge for one in six drivers (16 per cent), whereas rural roads are the worry for one in 10 (10 per cent). The Top Motoring New Year’s Resolutions for 2018 To check tyre pressure and oil levels regularly (24 per cent) To learn how to parallel park properly (17 per cent) To conquer fear of driving on motorways (16 per cent) To get better at reversing (15 per cent) To not get road rage (14 per cent)
To perfect reversing into a parking bay (13 per cent) To switch off phone when driving (13 per cent) To speed less (11 per cent) To stop checking messages when at traffic lights (11 per cent) To conquer fear of driving on country roads (10 per cent) To be more courteous to other road users, including cyclists and pedestrians (9 per cent) To stop using a phone behind the wheel (8 per cent) To always use indicators when turning (9 per cent) To use mirrors more (8 per cent) To not drive so close to the car in front (5 per cent) Other resolutions mentioned included keeping the car clean and tidy, being more confident behind the wheel, and driving more frequently. Laura White, head of marketing for Young Driver, which provides lessons for 5-17 year olds at more than 50 venues across the UK, said: “At Young Driver our instructors obviously spend a lot of time teaching youngsters the right and wrong way to drive – but of course children are watching and learning from their parents all the time. If you’re showing them it’s ok to take a call behind the wheel, or to get mad when another driver cuts in, they expect that’s how everyone drives. “One in five newly qualified drivers will have an accident within six months of passing their test, and research shows that starting them learning from a younger age can half that risk – but it’s also vital that they have good role models to learn from outside of their lessons. Plus, it seems that demonstrating how to reverse or parallel park well might be an issue for quite a lot of people! Many drivers end up avoiding doing things, because they’re nervous, and then they lose the knack – so we’ve created some ‘how to’ videos so everyone can brush up on their basic manoeuvres, learners and experienced drivers alike!” Young Driver’s how to videos can be found on its website at www.youngdriver.com and include parallel and bay parking, doing a turn in the road and reversing round a corner.

Those living in Edinburgh were least likely to have any concerns, with only 2 per cent including it. The euro and the pound in 2018
A
s everyone knows it is impossible to predict the currency markets. But we can have a look at some top City analysts’ predictions.
For GBP/EUR the majority anticipate a range of 1.10-1.15 in 6 months time and 1.15-1.20 in 12 months. For GBP/USD a range of 1.35-1.40 in 6 months but down slightly to 1.25-1.30 in 12 months. The top 3 factors cited to affect global exchange rates in 2018 are US interest rate rises, the reduction of European Central bank stimulus policies and changes in US economic policies arising from the Trump administration. Closer to home, Brexit progress will of course have a big impact on the pound. During 2017 the pound gained most against the Turkish lira (+20%) and the New Zealand dollar (+11%) and US dollar (+9.6%). The pound fared worst against the Czech koruna (-7.6%), Polish zloty (-7%) and the euro (-2.4%). In terms of actually buying currency your new year resolution should be to shop around. At The Currency Exchange we are often intrigued that some clients don’t regard a few hundred pounds as a ‘decent’ saving. On a recent transaction of £58,000 our exchange rate saved the client over £200 compared to a leading currency broker and our rate was over £1000 better than a leading high street bank. If we advertised ‘free money’ I’m sure they would view it differently! Exchange rates at time of writing (Midday Friday 5th Jan) GBP/EUR 1.123 GBP/USD 1.354 EUR/USD 1.205...........written by www.thecurrencyexchange.co.uk

Popular Choral Society and their ‘Double Delight’. The annual musical extravaganzas mounted by leading local popular chorus Melody Makers International continue on Saturday 27th January at the Orihuela Costa Resort Hotel at La Zenia. This year, however, audiences are in for a ‘DoubleDelight’ for as well as Melody Makers International there will be the 30 strong Orihuela Costa Male Voice Choir sharing the stage ... with a total of nearly 80 singers entertaining during the two shows (at 2pm and at 8pm). The shows are entitled ‘A Choral Spectacular’ and that is exactly what is promised by conductor Nigel Hopkins. As well as each choir performing individually, they will come together on four occasions bringing their vocal power to such numbers as the Battle Hymn of the Republic, and the Easter Hymn from Cavelleria Rusticana, amongst other surprises. Considering the programme will include such popular numbers as Bohemian Rhapsody, Fix
You, We Will Rock You and more ... plus the men performing rousing numbers culminating in Nessun Dorma ... the programme can most definitely be described as both diverse and spectacular. Soloists include the impressive Verity Hall; also the fabulous talent of Rebecca Holt - surely the most popular all-round entertainer on the Costas. Graham Cooke and Bill Nicholson will hold up the male end of the talented soloists - and a great time is promised to our audiences. Our comedy duet team will be well represented as ever. The concerts will this year be supporting the most worthwhile children’s charity, DEBRA - the Butterfly Children, and tickets are available from La Ponderosa Gift Shop at La Zenia, also from the CardPlace shops at both Punta Prima and Benimar. The charity shops of Debra at Urb. La Marina, San Fulgencio and Pueblo Bravo, Rojales also have tickets.
My car was filled several times and I was beginning to feel like Mrs Clause as we went around distributing the gifts and food items. It was all very humbling. We would like to offer particular thanks to those businesses and their customers that offered to act as drop off points for the appeal including: Hamiltons Bake House (Benijofar), Witherspoons (Villa Martin), Wella Hair by Samantha (Chicas Bonitas, Algorfa), Casaverde (Rojales/Guardamar/Almoradi), Fonefix (San Luis) and Roger Taylor Garage (Montesinos).
Rojales Panto Group present ‘Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves’
Do go along to this excellent show; take a child-preferably one you know! Or just be a child yourself for the evening and let the Rojales Pantomime Group transport you to the world of the Arabian Nights to meet Ali Baba and a host of magical characters, including a dancing camel and Yousless from YMCA. Ali Baba is a traditional pantomime for children of all ages with lots of fun for the family. When our Hero Ali Baba and his faithful friend Margarina discover a cave full of treasure they think they are going to be rich. Unfortunately the treasure belongs to the notorious and evil Desert Fox and his forty thieves. There are lots of goodies in the show, the cast throw sweets ‘a good selling point that predates health and safety regulations,’ they sing songs and crack jokes. There are even some real children in the cast from Essence Dance and fitness who do a confident job with their dance numbers. Ali Baba would not be complete without magic and the Genie will be characterised by Norman Love with the Dame played by Dave Allen. Cheer the Hero’s, boo the bad guys, chuckle at the jokes and sing along with the songs at the Escela de Musica Los Montesinos January 11th, 12th, evening performance with matinee 2.30pm Saturday 13th. Money raised goes to local charities.

Well, it is panto season again, so I have to use a panto title that broadly fits into the spirit of the season, don’t I? If you feel like shouting “Oh yes he did", or “Oh no he didn’t”, please feel free. I really won’t be offended. Do you ever feel that you have stepped into an alternative universe, or into an Alice in Wonderland situation? I certainly do, and I have been aware of it more in 2017 than any other year that I can remember. Post Truth, Fake News, Trump, ‘Little Rocket Man’ and Brexit have all added to a period of uncertainty and confusion that makes many of us ask if reality, as we know it, is finally spinning out of control? Currently, it seems that change, accompanied by chaos and confusion, is the order of the day and we had better get used to it. It is within this theme that I am going to suggest an idea that will add a little more chaos and confusion. How about visiting a Spanish town where they talk backwards for your holiday this year? A flight to the lovely Canary island of Tenerife and a trip to the town of La Laguna could be just the place to visit in our new ‘Alice in Wonderland’ world. Here visitors will witness, and maybe experience, first-hand the Verres language, which is the only place in the world where they speak back to front. I guess it could be compared to rhyming slang used in English, or a version of Pig Latin. Verres is

not to be treated as a joke or taken too lightly, since enthusiasts in La Laguna are currently asking UNESCO to consider making it an ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage’. Verres started life in a barber’s shop in La Laguna in the 1930s. The barber, Francisco Fariña, started using the language mainly to entertain and joke with customers whilst he cut their hair. In the 1930s, La Laguna was a sleepy town with very little going on, and people went to the barber’s shop to read the paper, gossip and put the world to rights. Being quite a wag, Francisco invented a new way of taking scrambled letters and syllables of words to confuse customers, particularly from the rural areas, whom he liked to tease. Francisco’s language became so popular in his day that even students from the University of La Laguna began to ‘study’ the language with him in his barber shop ‘academy’. Verres is currently spoken by around 60 residents of the town and is regarded as an amusing way of talking to friends. It is currently becoming more popular with its cultural heritage being taught and discussed in schools. Although dismissed as little more than a linguistic game by some, others point out that it has its own rules, whilst others use the language in their singing. Currently, the European Union has 24 official languages and claims to be in favour of linguistic diversity across all of its member states. Maybe one day, Verres will also be included as one of its working languages. Well, I did say that we are stepping into an alternative universe, so why not? History teaches us that chaos and confusion happen from time to time in all civilisations. Although I am not too keen on the chaos
Talking backwards, the particularity of the inhabitants of La Laguna part of stepping into an alternative universe, I always like a new challenge. I know that many embrace change and long for a correction to an imperfect world order as they see it. As individuals, I guess that there is little that we can do about it, other than to embrace change and see the positive side of what it has to offer and to keep an open mind. I wonder what Alice would have to say about it all? Happy New Year, or I should say, Yppah Wen Raey! Dear Mr Bascuñana: We have received countless letters from children who live on the Orihuela Costa, from where they send us their requests and wishes, which we are delighted to support. The children believe that we can solve all the problems of the world, but you already know that, because of the number of requests that we have, this will be completely impossible. But as we cannot fail our children we thought that by giving you three of their main requests that you, as mayor, could make many of their wishes and their requests come true. FIRST. A box full of understanding and solidarity, so that you can put yourself in the place of the children who go to their schools every day along an impassable road, one that is full of potholes, with the consequent dangers for them as cars swerve to avoid them by veering from side to side. Neither do they have a cultural centre with a library in which they can study, go to the theatre, dance, parties, workshops, music and other cultural activities; they tell us that, while it is being built, you could authorise the old

reading point, to introduce a programme that will help to meet their needs. SECOND. A box full of wisdom so that, if you cannot resolve everything in one go, you can prioritise the most important requests that you have from us, such as playgrounds that do not frighten our parents every time that we use them, due to their poor condition; and a large park, where children from the coast can get together, get to enjoy each other’s company and practice sports together. And finally: THIRD. A box full of hope and determination so that you are not satisfied until you make the dreams of the children in your municipality come true, and until you can realise those of their parents, who they say are sometimes worried about the amount of waste and pruning that there is lying about in the streets; and because when they finish secondary school, the children cannot continue locally with their studies so they have to move away. We hope, Mr. Orihuela Mayor that, with these three gifts you will be able to realise the dreams of all the children of the Orihuela Costa.
Three Kings Parades outshine Santa over holiday period B
ecause Spain has a strong religious history, Christmas is a more holy festival, a time to spend with the family. Although some gifts may be given Santa Claus is not that important. In fact in some places children are told that if they are bad Santa Claus will come and take them away. The day that most gifts are given is on Three Kings Day (el día de Reyes). This is keeping with the tradition that this was the day that the Three Kings (Los Tres Reyes Magos) arrived bearing gifts for Jesus. Indeed, in a 2015 survey, Spanish children overwhelmingly chose the Three Kings as their favourite gift giver (67%) over Santa Claus (27%). On the evening before Three Kings Day every sizeable village and town holds a parade, a ‘cabalgata’ at which the Three Kings are paraded through the streets of the town, accompanied by musicians, dancers, performers and bands. The parades are extremely popular and can often draw large crowds, particularly in such places as Torrevieja and Orihuela. The tradition of showering the spectators with sweets makes them particularly popular with the children. Whilst the larger towns often boast much bigger parades, those in local villages and pedanias are usually much more intimate affairs, with the three kings usually ending up in the local village hall, theatre or casa de Cultura, where children receive their first presents of the festival. In Torrevieja the Thee Kings got the day underway with the mayor, José Manuel Dolón, and the councillor of Fiestas, Domingo Pérez, when they visited the Residence of the Third Age, the Holy Hospital of the Immaculate Conception and the Paediatric Unit of the Torrevieja University Hospital At the residence of the Third Age Melchor called for peace in the New Year after which all of the residents received a small gift. The party moved to the University Hospital where they handed out gifts to the children who are hospitalised in the Paediatric Unit. After arriving in Orihuela the Magi also visited the children in the Vega Baja Hospital, together with the mayor, Emilio Bascuñana and the councillor of Festivities, Mariola Rocamora, where they delivered toys to children in the hospital. Bascuñana thanked the kings, who he hoped would bring health to the patients and encouragement to the medical staff, where, throughout the year, they carry out commendable work.

In total, there were 42 events, which included two charity days and a raffle for an electric bike, during what proved to be a fantastically busy two-month period. The amount raised by the golf societies, organisations and their many friends was €12,169, and they should be congratulated for the amount of effort that went in to achieving this truly outstanding amount. The two main stalwarts who were out in all weathers, representing the Royal British Legion at the events were Mick ‘the grip’ Reeves and Mick Gossage. TORREVIEJA DARTS LADIES ORGANISATION Ladies Blind Triples In Memory of Irene Russell & Eileen Evette
The Ladies of the League gathered at the New Tavern, in San Miguel, for our Ladies Blind Triples event. Again, the Ladies League Memorial Shield, which is Dedicated to the Memory of those Departed will be presented to the winners. Unfortunately, we lost two of our Ladies durng 2017, namely Irene Russell & Eileen Evette. Thank you everyone, because this time we had the highest number of players attending the event. I am delighted with this, as attendance for this event has been poor in previous years and as we cannot fit the Pentathlon into the schedule; this is the only event we can mix everyone together as League. Due to being well supported, we had a preliminary round, and during the evening we had a Christmas Fancy Dress competition. Surpise, surprise, everyone in Fancy Dress decided on an impromptu sing song serenading us with Rudolf the Rednose Reindeer and good fun was had by all. Kim Fickling won the best fancy dress – well done Kim.
Then came the exciting Semi-Finals between Gail Murray, Ellen Attwood & Heather McCormack and Pam Horton, Marylyn Jackson & Beatty Powell. Then the second Semi-Final between Ann Wharton, Margaret Morris, & Mitch Halliday and Ann McGivern, Lillian Thomson & Simone de Lacy. The Final between Gail Murray, Ellen Attwood & Heather McCormack and Ann McGivern, Lillian Thomson & Simone de Lacy was won by Gail Murray’s Triple which became Champions of the night. Well done everyone who took part. I Have to say a warm hearted thank you to Ian Dowerick for hosting the evening at the New Tavern, and for providing us all with an excellent supper, including a very tasty vegetarian lasagna which was appreciated by everyone. Thanks also go to the Bar Staff Isabel and Paula for all their hard work, including Stan the Man and the other Ladies who kindly did the marking throughout the evening. This was our best Triples event to date . In the meantime, a Prosperous and Healthy New Year for 2018, and enjoy your darts. Pam Horton, 96 571 0066, Email:dartess501@gmail.com

Pinatar Arena to host over 100 international teams in 2018
DURING HIS FIRST trip to Japan, Donald Trump played a round of golf with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Hideki Matsuyama at the Kasumigaseki Country Club, proposed site of the 2020 Olympic golf tournament. A local television station captured Prime Minister Abe’s shot from a fairway bunker. Trump and Matsuyama were walking off as Abe charged up the side of the bunker after them — even getting one foot on the top before losing his balance, tumbling backwards in a half-somersault and landing flat on his back at the bottom of the bunker. It’s not often Donald is upstaged at getting a laugh. TOMMY FLEETWOOD, who won the Race to Dubai, is back with his old coach Alan Thompson. He says: “In 2015 I decided I wanted to hit like Henrik Stenson, so I switched coaches and asked Pete Cowen to help me, but I couldn’t get my body to swing the way we wanted, and lost my rhythm. Pete taught me a lot anyway, but I hadn’t realised how difficult and dangerous it would be to try and change my swing.” If it aint broke etc., THE CUSTOM-MADE sunglasses worn by Henrik Stenson were designed by his very own company, named, amazingly: “Henrik Stenson Eyewear.” The company produces everyday glasses as well. If they don’t help you hit a ball like Henrik at least they can help you see where it’s gone.
RG GOLF TIP FOR BUNKER SHOTS: If you just open the club face up, you’re not adding more loft, just pointing it further right. To hit this shot you need to drop the butt end all the way down to actually create some loft. Merely opening the club face won’t do it. Take a wider stance with the butt end low and club flat, that will help you to hit a shallower shot which actually gives more elevation. RORY MCILROY intends to begin his PGA TOUR season with the AT&T Pebble Beach ProAm on Feb. 8-11, followed by the Genesis Open on Feb. 15-18 and The Honda Classic on Feb. 2225. Rory, who will be making his Pebble Beach debut, is scheduled to play alongside his father, Gerry. Hope he can remember which end of his club to hold, or Pop may upstage him. WHILE ON HOLIDAY, Frank went into a golf shop, and selected some new clubs. He walked to the checkout, pulling out his wallet. The pretty blonde cashier said: “Strip down, facing me.” Not quite sure what was going on Frank did as she asked. When the hysterical shrieks of laughter finally subsided he asked, “What’s so funny?” “I was telling you how to hold your credit card,” the cashier responded. A very Happy New Year to all, and Happy Golfing in 2018. Contact Mick for your regripping and repairs. 638 859 475.
Pinatar Arena has once again hosted over a hundred teams through its Football Centre in 2017 and will again host more than 100 friendly football matches in the coming year. In addition, from this current term, Pinatar Arena will manage 11 football fields, all natural grass with the opening of a new Football Centre in La Torre Golf Resort, confirming its position as the complex that manages most fields in the Region of Murcia. Following the arrival on last week of Olympique de Lyon, Werder Bremen, Saint Etienne and Lille, Pinatar Arena kicked off its sixth football season. The greats of French football have chosen the pinatarense resort for their winter camp, not only with their men's team, but also with the current Women's European champions. The historic German club Werder Bremen are also at the Pinatar Arena, which, for the first two and a half months of the year has confirmed more than 60 teams with close to 80 friendly matches in January and February, most of them absolutely free to attend. The Football Centre will again welcome numerous Belgian teams including Beveren, Charleroi, Oostende and Antwerp, German clubs such as Darmstadt, Aue and Heidenheim, Twente Enshcede from Holland, Austrian clubs Lask Linz and Ried, Odense of Denmark, IFK Goteborg and Orebro from Sweden, Swiss team Neuchatel, Dudelange of Luxembourg and Vaduz of Liechtenstein. Again, Asian football will see four clubs from China and a fifth from South Korea. And women's football will also play an important role with concentrations and friendly matches involving the national teams of Spain, Holland, Russia and Slovakia.

SMGS at Villamartin. January 3rd, 2018. The first outing of 2018 saw 32 members and 4 guests start an hour later than expected due to an administrative mix-up. At least the weather was warm (though breezy) by the time the first game had teed off. As usual, the greens were very pacey and the tees positioned well back. Adding in the wind factor meant scores were below par for everyone. Best score of the day was 34 points, set by Brian Mulligan and Dave Blackburn. Similar to the greens, the fairways were slick, dry and sparse in places giving plenty of run (mostly into the wrong places!). A strong crosswind caused havoc at the dreaded 17th which recorded just five pars. Nearly a third of the field returned no score mostly due to long putts not making the top tier. All-in-all a tough but sunny day at the office. Nearest the pins – Ivan Hanak (Hole 6) Ralph Tilbrook (Holes 9 & 17) and Darren Hancock (Hole 13)
A new year, a new trophy and a new winner. We met on a gloriously sunny at Bonalba to compete for the above trophy. Overall scoring however, reflected the gale-force wind that we encountered. Winner on countback of the silver division with a creditable 30 points was Tim Ruse but the winner of the gold division and the trophy, again on countback and by virtue of his recent handicap increase, was vice-captain Bill Stobo with 31 points. Nearest the pin winners were Gerrard McCabe,

Glorious weather for the Plaza Golf Society’s last game of 2017
On this beautifully warm winters day, TPGS ventured down to Roda where 32 players commenced battle! As usual there was a mixed bag of results. By far the best though was Darren Hancock who won the Gold Division with 40 pts off his 4 hcap, not a bad knock although there were rumours of sandbagging as he bogeyed 16, 17 and 18 ?. 2nd place was Phil de Lacy with 35pts and Warren Harris clinching 3rd with 33pts. Silver division was won by Russell Bailey 34pts, 2nd was Bill Gillies 30 pts and 3rd came Captain in waiting Dickie McAllen with 29pts.

Campoamor Welcomes T.M.G.S. into 2018 Almost 50 members and guests turned up for our usual early start only to be greeted with strong winds very similar to last week’s visit to Alenda which had to be abandoned for that very reason. However Campoamor being closer to the coast the golf course was playable. Members found that the course was playing almost its full length and that at long last the 6th green was now back in play. The course was in good condition and what your saw as green was actually grass and not paint! The greens were extremely fast causing a few putting problems for some but all-in-all provided a good challenge. Note; we had one complaint, a certain member complained that he could not reach the greens on the long par 3’s it was pointed out to him that this is the reason that he receives 2 strokes on his handicap, not that he needs to be on in two (which he can) but three + 2 putts =5 nett 3, some people are hard to please. The 2’s pot has been rolled and now contained €175 this was a belated Christmas present to our German member Hermes Woerdemann it was his first competition with us since last spring and he was the only player to make a 2, well done Hermes! Today’s results: N.T.P.’s Hole 4 C. Kinnerfeldt, hole 6 T. Norris, Hole 10 J. Dean, hole 15 NADA, hole 17 B. Gillies. Best Visitors; 2nd P. Lars 28 pts. 1st Mrs. C. Kinnerfeldt 30 pts. Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. Around and About the Courses – Vistabella Part II In the last article we informed you that as from 2nd January 2018 the Vistabella course designed by Manuel Pinero and originally opened to the public on 26th September 2009 as an 11 hole courses finally opened the additional 7 holes. We promised a full review of the new holes but as of the date of writing this article the new scorecard with the par, slope and hole lengths is still unavailable but we will give you a brief review of each hole to give you the flavour of the changes to the course and how it will play. Hole 1 (par 3) Played from a slightly elevated tee to a well bunkered undulating green most players will need a mid iron and some of the pin positions could proved troublesome. Hole 2 (par 4) Again played slightly down hill this very slight left to right hole is of medium length but all the trouble starts at the green which is almost an island green surrounded by water with only a small run on area to the right of the green. Hole 3 (par 4) Slightly down hill with a slight dog leg to the right the landing area on the fairway is small and narrow and players must select a club to stay short of a large water hazard without leaving too much club to carry the water with the second shot played slightly up hill to an elevated well bunkered green with opportunities for some tricky pin positions. Hole 4 (Par 5) This hole is a very long par 5 hole played all up hill with a fairway turning right to left to a slightly elevated well bunkered green and will be a monster into any head wind. Hole 5 (Par 4) Played down hill with a fairway turning left to right this will require a mid iron second shot for most players and distance control on the second shot will be the key to good scoring on this whole which again can be made difficult with certain pin positions Hole 6 (Par 3) Most unusually this par 3 played down hill from an elevated tee doesn't have any bunkers but there are water hazards right and left for the
really errant tee shot. Hole 7 (Par 4) This shortish par 4 finishing hole turns left to right and uphill for the second shot to an elevated, small well bunkered green with numerous difficult pin positions and no chance to see the bottom of the flag and this applies also to many of the other new holes. The slope is still to be calculated and for those golfers with hand held distance measurement gadgets these are still to be updated so you will have to rely on the good old distance markers on the side of the fairways. Without doubt this will prove a difficult test of golf for all standards of golfer and will become one of the best courses on the area and will be busy but we can offer a price of €86 for 2 players and buggy until 28/02/18 so get your booking in early by calling 661345931. Torry in disarray as 2018 gets off to poor start at Thader in 2 matches. There were 4 changes from the home defeat just before Xmas, with Vidal replacing Buyo in goal for his 1st start in goal, Borja and Verdu coming into the defence, with Beltran restored to the front line. orry manager Pedreño must be tearing his hair out at the way his team are Thader showed their intention as early as 5 sinking faster than the Titanic. mins, Vidal pulling off a top drawer save from Although they are still 6th in the Preferente a Lloyd free kick. Verdu became the game’s division, their Sunday late morning local derby first booking on 25 mins, before Torry old boy at Rojales was yet another in a line of diabolical performances. Dani Lucas saw his sweet long range daisy cutter rattle the post before bouncing to safety. Pedreño must be at a loss of what he can do next, for he has now exhausted all possible permutations, from what was once a solid Frustration was showing for Torry both on and off the field, when looking squad of players. first Walid was booked for an off the ball incident, then Pedreño suffered the same fate for comments made to the officials. There were Scoring goals has always been a problem, but now this has been strong appeals by Thader for a penalty on the stroke of half time, but compounded by a fragile looking defence, which has leaked 6 goals thankfully the ref considered Verdu's Members of the Torry Army looking forward to handball to be unintentional (either that the first game of 2018 at local rivals Thader or he missed it!). The card count was evened early on in the 2nd half, as Thader showed their over physical side to their game, but although Torry started to show more endeavour, disaster was about to strike. A needless foul on 53 mins by the normally sensible Walid, earned him another amarillo tarjeta then the dreaded roja. To make matters worse, Lloyd struck a venomous 30 yard free kick onto the underside of the bar, then became mobbed by his colleagues as the ball bounced over the line to open the scoring. Although Pedreño elected to bring on the maximum 4 substitutes, none of them could muster a shot to trouble Jovi in the Thader goal throughout the

whole match. With 10 mins remaining, a cross from the right found substitute Nino, who from close range missed the target, but from the next attack he made amends. Picking up a long ball out of defence, he was allowed space and time to drill home an acute angled shot which gave Vidal no chance, doubling his sides goal tally. Thader were hungry for a 3rd, and they got it on 88 mins courtesy of an assist by Javi, whose inch perfect cross to the far post was headed home by Piti. Honours go to Eintracht Frankfurt in Pinatar’s German duel
Eintracht Frankfurt won the first match to be staged at Pinatar Arena on 2018 when, on Saturday, in front of over 700 spectators, the German Bundesliga club beat Division 1 outfit FC Erzgebirge Aue by 3-1 with goals from Haller, Hrgota and Gacinovic. The Aue goal came from Maria late in the game. Meanwhile on Sunday afternoon Werder Bremen notched up a comfortable 4-0 victory against Twente Enschede in the in the 700th match to be played at the Pinatar Arena The German team was far superior to their Dutch opponents and a brace from German international Max Kruse had the game won by half time. Kainz and Johannes Eggestein got the 3rd and 4th for Bremen against their lacklustre opponents.
Weather very good, sunshine with a cool breeze which calmed down after the first hour. The course must have brought the best out of them as the scoring was very good. Up first was the second placed La Manga RGA against EuroToffs, which was won by La Manga RGA 3-1. And by a slight margin of 4 points 278 to 282. RGA also took the 2 Bonus points. Up next was the table topping Club 25 Golf, who took on third placed La Manga North in an even closer match, with the match ending in a draw 4 points each, with each team taking a bonus point each, Overall score was La Manga North 276 points to 277 points by Club 25 Golf which gave them a Bonus point each. Congratulations to all players who played majestically, and to the Staff at Lo Romero, for all their help, and preparing an immaculate course. Busters Golf Society January 2018
For the first game of 2018 twenty of us travelled to Roda. The dreaded Flu bug had reduced our numbers but hopefully our sick members are now on their way to recovery . We were well received as usual by the staff where the course was in excellent condition, however this did not reflect in our scores, but the sun was shining and the company excellent. We had four new members and they all seemed to enjoy the camaraderie. We played our usual stableford but added on an extra game, a hidden pairs of high and low handicaps combined scores, just to give a touch of variety. This was won by Graham Ball paired with Paul Satterthwaite who had a combined score of 64. Both received a bottle of wine After the game everyone returned to the Mini Golf bar at Quesada’s arches where we were treated to sausage and chips. This month our NTPs were won by Rob Ashman, Paul Satterthwaite, Preston Ives and Phil Pettican, each received a sleeve of golf balls. Graham
by Barry Grinsell
Ball took third place with 29 points, Phil Pettican came second with 32 points and our winner, Paul Satterthwaite, received a bottle of Smirnoff Vodka. Our twos competition had two winners, Ineke Stevenson and Peter List shared the cash pot, our soccer card winner, who selected Norwich, was Brian Jones. Our final presentation was to Phil Pettican who won our Player of the year competition.
