Torrevieja saltworks doubles output for UK Much of the salt currently being despatched from Torrevieja is bound for the UK
A
ccording to the State Meteorological Agency, an area of 41,000 square kilometres of northern Spain, around 8% of the country, was covered by a white blanket of snow during recent storms Many areas were quickly covered by snow and ice, especially the province of Ávila and Segovia, a good part of Guadalajara, Soria and north of Madrid. Areas of Cuenca and Teruel were also affected, as were all of the country’s mountain systems. Whilst not good news for the areas affected the sudden downfalls were a boost to the local, especially, Torrevieja, economies because of the urgent need for salt, a lot of it. Local experts can be found at the Torrevieja saltworks where, this week, according to Operations Director Joseph Pérez, five thousand tons of special salt will be moved by road, to municipalities in northern Spain. And next week there will be another five thousand tons transported north. That means the arrival and despatch of almost fifty large trucks, twice the usual number, every day. The Torrevieja saltworks main customers, all belonging to Salinas España, are subcontracted companies which are engaged in the maintenance of public highways and toll roads through private concessionaires.
But the product is also exported throughout Europe, often by sea, where the capacity for it’s movement by boat much higher. In the case of the Torrevieja saltworks, the company guarantees only a short stay in the port, something that is possible thanks to the special salt transport system across a conveyor belt system, of almost two kilometres, that connects the port facilities with the salt yards, This solution lowers costs and, more importantly, allows movement and loading of the goods at their destination in far less time. This week 60,000 tons of salt is currently being loaded from the Torrevieja salt port, all destined for the same use and destination, the thawing of roads across northern Europe, but in particular, roads in the the British Isles. Those agencies purchasing salt for the thaw already have a stockpile of salt which they maintain annually. The salt works distribute between three and four thousand tons of salt by road transport almost every week of the year, from August to July. Only in situations like the rcent freeze is there a need to increase those stockpiles. The company has only been able to meet the demand because it has managed to recover from the disastrous impact that it suffered during the torrential rains of late 2016 and early 2017 and it now expects to end the year with a production total of over 450,000 tons.

Money - The root of discrimination against the Orihuela Costa
Discrimination against Orihuela Costa leaves us with an inferior quality of life
I
n the December plenary meeting, the Popular Party-Ciudadanos coalition government defeated a motion presented by the opposition, with the support of C.L.A.R.O., which would have allocated 40% of investment funds available in 2017 to Orihuela Costa, respecting a commitment by all parties in the context of the 2012 budget drafted by Juan Ignacio Lopez Bas, leader of today’s Ciudadanos Party. The motion specifically mentioned, among other projects, the construction of a much needed Cultural and social Centre in Orihuela Costa. After the plenary meeting, the Ciudadanos party issued a statement which totally misleadingly claims that the coast did obtain 40% of the funds for investment resulting from the sale of municipal land in Orihuela Costa. In fact, the statement boasts, the coast received 47% of these funds.
According to an informed newspaper report, in the latest 2017 census the number of registered coastal residents is 28,000, equal to 38% of the total registered municipal population of 76-78,000. The census figures show the coastal population is increasingly and for the first time a majority of registered residents in Orihuela Costa are Spanish. On a registered population basis, Orihuela Costa should therefore receive 38% of investments. The notion that 40% of investment would compensate for a historic deficit is fast becoming outdated by population changes. 40% will soon be the percentage which corresponds to the registered population level of Orihuela Costa. At 28,000 the population of Orihuela Costa is in fact seriously understated. Taking the level of water consumption, the Town Hall calculates that the municipal population should be 8-10,000 more than the registered population of 76-78,000.
This argument is only defensible on the premise that the commitment that the coast would benefit from 40% of the sale of municipal land applies uniquely to land sold in the period 2012-2014 and that the commitment does not apply to the sale of other land or other investment funds included in the budget of the municipality.
There is no doubt that the great majority of this 8-10,000 extra population lives on the coast and consists of those who have purchased property, who pay property taxes, who contribute to the income of the Town Hall and to the municipal economy and employment by their local expenditure.
This is a totally deceptive argument, the only purpose of which is to continue discriminating in favour of Orihuela city and surrounding villages, where these parties get their voters support and against Orihuela Costa where too few people vote.
These non-residents may not be on the municipal register (padron) but they have certain rights to services and facilities. AND the right not to be discriminated against. If these non-residents were included and their rights were recognised, the share of the coast in investments should be closer to 50%
The principle of 40% of investments for the coast was, at the time, understood to be a broad and general commitment which would compensate for the historic deficit in investments in Orihuela Costa with its resulting deficiencies in terms of civic facilities, such as the Emergency Services centre, 24 hour police station, civic and social centre, library, proper parks and gardens and decent streets and pavements. 40% of the sale of land worth €3.7 million in 2012-2014 could not possibly compensate for such a huge historical deficit. In fact, in 2017 the total of investment funds available amounted to €12.8 million derived from various sources including sale of land prior to 2012-2014, as well as 2012-14, and investments made possible by the greatly increased municipal budget of over €90 million compared to €65 million in 2012. €12.8 million is nearly four times greater than the sale of land in 2012-14. What Ciudadanos fail to explain in their statement is that out of the total investments in 2017, Orihuela Costa will receive only a little over €2 million, the equivalent of less than 20%. A less than 20% share of investments for Orihuela Costa is shameful. It mocks the idea of compensating for a historical deficit in investments and leaves Orihuela Costa poorer compared to the rest of the municipality in civic facilities (not to mention inferior services such as street cleaning and rubbish removal) – despite the fact that Orihuela Costa contributes to some 60% of municipal income.
Money matters. Discrimination against Orihuela Costa matters and leaves us with an inferior quality of life, compared to the rest of the municipality, especially when the coast provides some 60% of the income of Orihuela. It should be stopped. Another test is coming. The Town Hall has sold more land, mainly of course in Orihuela Costa. The government estimates that the proceeds amount to €14.5 million. If the Popular Party-Ciudadanos government does not allocate Orihuela Costa at least 40% of this amount, enabling a substantial investment in much needed civic facilities, there will be a serious reaction to this continued, unjust discrimination against nearly 40% of the official population of Orihuela.

“Made in Elche” rocket bound for space in 2019
Agricultural Visitor Centre for Orihuela How does a seed germinate? How does traditional irrigation work? These are some of the mysteries that surround us in a region such as Vega Baja, where agriculture has prospered for more than ten centuries with an undeniable heritage value. Last week, the Councilor for Tourism, Sofía Álvarez, announced that the Provincial Council of Alicante has allocated 150,000 euros from within the Sustainable Development Plan for the creation of an Interpretation Centre of the Huerta de la Vega Baja that will be located on a plot located on the Camino de En medio, a few kilometres from Orihuela city. The centre will see the establishment of a museum and a visitable garden that it hopes will attract thousands of tourists into the municipality each year.
The centre will by funded by a Provincial Grant
It is intended that the new visitor centre will open its doors by the end of the year, with workshops and an experimental garden that will help to raise awareness about nature and our rural environment. Land for the project was gifted to the city by the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura (CHS). The project will include the creation of a site museum, an exhibition room, a vistable garden of 4,300 square metres, an experimental garden, as well as a tourist information point and a car park.
E
lche Company PLD Space say that they have raised the money needed that will enable them to continue with the development of their Arion 1 reusable suborbital launch vehicle. The funding will be provided by the European Union and will advance the implementation of its space project next year, however the Elche firm is still looking for 8 million euros in private investment. "The news confirms that we are in the Champions League of emerging projects and with more possibilities in the markets of the future," said business director, Raul Verdú. CEO, Raúl Torres added, "We are much closer to developing a rocket system that allows Spain to have its own scientific and commercial launching capacity into space. This is a capability that has been achieved by only ten countries around the world," he said. Arion 1 is a kerosene-fuelled, single-stage rocket, designed to use a combination of parachute and propulsion to land after lofting its 200-kilogram payload into a 250-kilometer suborbital trajectory. PLD is positioning the Arion 1 as both a commercial suborbital launcher and technology demonstrator for Arion 2, a three-stage smallsat launcher designed to carry up to 150 kilograms to low Earth orbits between 400 and 1,200-kilometers. The first launch of Arion 1 is planned for 2019
with Arion 2 to follow in 2020. “This year the workload will be very high, with the aim of completing the construction of the prototypes and their propulsion testing at Teruel airport. ”That's where we see the fruits of our labours because at the Elche Business Park we cannot test our engines for safety reasons. The airport in Teruel, which is about 3 hours from Elche, is the ideal location, "said Verdú. Now that the EU has given the green light to the programme, the company will become the first commercial launcher of reusable aircraft. Its challenge is to drastically reduce the cost of scientific and commercial access to become the "FedEx" of space. Apart from the economic aid, the Elche company has also received the support of important people from within the space industry, such as Franco Malerba, the first astronaut in the history of Italy who flew on the NASA space shuttle in the STS46 mission. During the last year, Malerba has contributed his knowledge and experience to the company. Last June the company satisfactorily concluded the first phase of testing of the Arion 1 engine. Since then, the prototypes have continued to be tested thanks to the strong economic injection of the EU, confirming the future of PLD Space. PLD Space plans to relocate this year from the Universidad Miguel Hernández’s Science Park to a new plant in Elche. They also plan to set up new engine testbeds at Teruel Airport.

Spain the global leader in organ donation and transplants “Spain continues to break records and is once again the global leader in organ donation and transplantation", says Dolors Montserrat, the Spanish Minister for Health The country has maintained its global leadership for 26 straight years after it broke its own record by reaching 46.9 donors per million population in 2017, a total of 2,183 donors. This led to 5,259 organ transplants, surpassing the figure of 5,000 for the first time in 2017. The pace of new donors has reached an average of 220 new donors joining the system every day. If this can be continued, Spain will reach its targets for the second stage of the Bone Marrow Plan (400,000 donors by mid-2018) two and a half years ahead of schedule. At 1 January 2018, a total of 357,492 (up 26.7%) bone marrow donors were registered in Spain. This compares with a figure of 281,748 registered at the same time in the previous year.

Tragedy of decomposing Man detained for setting bodies found in San Javier fire to waste containers
Local Police from San Pedro del Pinatar arrested on Wednesday the alleged perpetrator of two acts of arson in Calle Campoamor de Lo Pagรกn which resulted in the destruction of a waste container.
T
he bodies of 43-year old Joaquin and his 52-year old sister were found dead on Tuesday, in their family home in the La Paz neighbourhood of San Javier, after a neighbour, alerted by the prolonged absence of the pair, and by the foul smelling odours coming from the house, notified the Local Police.
Security councillor, Angela Gaona, said that the police and the fire service responded at 05.30 in the morning, after receiving a call via the emergency services. At around 06.15 a second alert occurred, notifying the authorities of another container fire in the same street. Unmarked police vehicles were then despatched in an effort to find the perpetrator which they eventually did at 6.40 am, already in the act of setting another fire in Calle San Lorenzo, 400 metres from the previous incident.
The sister, who suffered from downs syndrome, was dependent on her brother who very rarely left the house, so it was not unusual for the pair to remain indoors for days at a time. Indeed Joaquin worked on his computer from home so he only occasionally left the house for food.
The suspect is a 32 year old Colombian who was arrested after a chase on foot. Among his belongings the police found several lighters and flammable materials which he is thought to have used to commit the earlier crimes.
However, the unusual smell gave an indication that something was badly wrong so the neighbour, a retired civil guard officer, decided to call the Local Police, who immediately attended the property gaining access through the courtyard at the rear of the building. On entering the accommodation they found two bodies, both said to be in an advanced state of decomposition. The pair are thought to have been dead for over a month. The woman was sitting curled up on a sofa and her brother was lying on his bed. Joaquin had been caring for his sister since the death of their mother last summer. Neither body showed any signs of violence but there was an inordinate amount of waste scattered about the house with one source suggesting that the man had been suffering from depression. The neighbours are now mourning the tragic end of the siblings after their long run of problems, the illness of their mother, who
He is now facing charges of arson, resulting in the destruction of 11 waste containers as well as a number of adjacent palm trees. The councillor emphasised the enormous damage that this type of vandalism costs for the municipality as well as the risk that it has for members of the public. was suffering from dementia, and her subsequent death, as well as Joaquin's separation from his wife who left him without even a note. They remember Joaquin as being in a state of depression, but say he was always busy looking after his sister, whom neighbours say he bathed, dressed and fed like a daughter. One theory is that the pair might well have been poisoned by carbon monoxide although until the results of the autopsies are known, the Judicial Police will not speculate on the causes of death, whether it was simply a tragic accident or whether their lives were ended by some other more sinister means.

Topsy-turvy pound This week has seen the pound seesaw, rising against the US dollar to over 1.36 and dip against the euro to 1.12. Put them in a blender and the euro is up strongly against the dollar to 1.214, its highest level for 3 years. The pound’s slide against the euro was a combination of UK and Euro influences: London Mayor Sadiq Khan released a Brexit impact report which made gloomy reading for the UK economy suggesting a ‘no-deal’ would cost the UK £50 billion and generate a ‘lost decade’. Over in europe there were good figures out of Germany and the European Central Bank released minutes from its last meeting which were positive for the eurozone. Meanwhile the Trump show won’t roll into town next month as Washington signals that the president’s proposed UK visit has been cancelled. The official reason is cited as his disapproval of the new US Embassy in Vauxhall but we all know that he wants to avoid the planned protests. Around the world the pound was up against the Hong Kong Dollar 10.66 and steady against the Australian dollar at 1.73 having taken a dip down to 1.71 on Thursday. In other news, UKIP flag bearer Nigel Farage has unexpectedly lent his support to a second Brexit referendum to “silence the Remoaners once and for all’. I’m not sure which pubs he frequents to sound out public opinion but the Government’s shaky handling of Brexit negotiations so far might give Mr Farage a nasty shock! As always, shop around for the best exchange rate and don’t take unnecessary risks; you will never catch the top of the market! Written by www.thecurrencyexchange.co.uk
TM Group to build 1,200 properties in Benidorm The Orihuela developer, based in Torrevieja, has contracted to the largest investment in its 50 years of operation. The promoter has purchased a plot of 165,000 square meters in Benidorm on the second line of the Poniente beach and is destined mostly to the construction of houses for both national and overseas clients. 90% of the properties will have views of the Mediterranean Sea and, according to the group's forecasts, will be available for sale in the summer of 2019, although their completion will be one year later. According to Pablo Serna, General Manager of TM Real Estate Group, "this development positions us as real estate leaders in the tourist capital of Europe, being the promoter with the most land in the municipality of Benidorm." Puig promises improvements to Vega Baja Hospital Ximo Puig with the mayor of Orihuela at the Vega Baja Hospital
T
he Vega Baja Hospital, which serves half of the region’s population, was visited by the President of the Valencia Consell, Ximo Puig, on Tuesday, who announced that the Ministry of Health is currently talking with the centre’s management as they assess the requirements of the local population. The study will also show how the hospital can best meet those needs together with any necessary expansion that might be necessary to ensure that suitable resources are in place.
Both the users and public representatives have been demanding an extension to the hospital for some years which the Generalitat Valenciana has now recognised. Puig said that the objective is to provide better care to patients, however, it is not yet known what investment might needed or when it will become available. “The extension is necessary to improve and expand the portfolio of available medical services. They form a large part of our budget, currently 6,500 million euros, which is
40% of our actual expenditure, "said Puig. The president was accompanied by the Minister of Health, Carmen Montón, who said that with this extension we want to improve three areas, which are "specialised care, outpatient consultations and also have greater surgical capacity in the future." Montón said that the aim of the Valencian government is to expand the building and provide it, not only with better services, but also with the necessary staff to run the additional facilities. The Generalitat recently undertook an expansion of the Emergency Department in the Vega Baja Hospital where more than one million euros was invested and the space increased by an additional 269 meters. The improvements aalso brought with them an increase in the number of medical staff and, according to Montón, a plan is now being finalised to increase the number of staff in the Children's Mental Health Unit. The councillor also noted that the bidding process for a CT scanner and a mammographer is under way, under the supervision of the Amancio Ortega foundation. The Foundation provides the support programme that is currently modernising the cancer detection and radiotherapy treatment units in all public hospitals. "It will be something that improves the ability of staff to offer the best diagnoses and treatments in this area," added Montón.

Compensation for supermarket cashiers despite being found guilty of thefts
A
Barcelona supermarket, which sacked five female cashiers who were secretly filmed by hidden cameras stealing products from the store, has been ordered to pay them compensation by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in Strasbourg. Following the disappearance of stock in 2009 the owners told their staff that cameras were to be installed. They were informed of the locations of many of the cameras but not those of a small number of cameras that were hidden. All five women were shown films of them stealing. They each confessed they were involved with the thefts and were fired on disciplinary grounds. The Spanish courts ruled that the dismissals were fair, including on appeal to the High Court but the then took their case to the ECHR. The European court ruled that while the women received a fair trial and were dismissed on fair grounds, an employer cannot secretly film their employees in the workplace. The Spanish women claimed compensation for lost wages, €6,500 each for “considerable moral damage” and another €2,906.80 to cover legal costs. The ECHR refused wage compensation and reduced the non-pecuniary damage to €4,000. The first applicant López Ribalda received €500 for legal costs and expenses and rest received €568.86.

Entertainment was provided by Jerry, who got the dancers dancing and singers singing to songs from the 60’s and 70’s which created a fun atmosphere. A raffle of a huge hamper of Christmas goodies, generously supplied by the Age Concern Charity shop in Torrevieja, was won by Margaret Dumbleton, a very lucky lady.

O
verweight ‘Bridegrooms of Death’
I guess that many of us may have over indulged during the Christmas and New Year festivities, and I assume that many are now in the period where reluctant gym memberships are booming, as well as desperate subscriptions to Weight Watchers. Sadly, all those temptations do have a price to pay when we see that we can no longer squeeze into our favourite clothes. One of the many fat inducing temptations readily available in Spain and the Canary Islands are ‘Churros con Chocolate’, which is basically deep fried pastry strips, rolled in sugar and dipped into hot chocolate as they are eaten. This ‘snack’ is hugely popular in Spain, Portugal and the Canary Islands, as well as the United States, France and Mexico. Depending upon the time of day, and the state of your appetite, they can be both delicious and disgusting at the same time. Indeed, it is not unusual to see locals polishing off a huge quantity of churros in cafe bars for their breakfast. Needless to say, it is an excellent way to pile on the pounds, as well as keeping the health service busy with the coronaries that are the result of this over indulgence. My advice is to avoid them at all costs.

Speaking of being overweight and diets, you really should take a look at Spain’s ‘Bridegrooms of Death’, which is the cheerful nickname given to Spain’s elite infantry regiment, ‘La Legión’. The regiment is loosely based upon the French Foreign Legion, as a prestige combat unit with its best known member being General Franco during the Spanish Civil War. Usually admired for their handsome physical appearance, these fine men are usually well known for their tasselled caps, to keep the flies off, and open necked shirts, to keep the ladies interested. Their uniform traditionally does not have a top button, which aids their reputation as “the top totty killers of Europe”. Sadly, this much-coveted reputation is rapidly disappearing, since it was found that a significant percentage of the 3000 troops were found to be obese, based upon their body mass index (BMI) of over 30. This elite force is now having a few problems in the obesity department and the troops are now being given dietary advice, nutrition tips, as well as additional exercise to overcome their rapidly expanding waistlines with a target loss of between 500g and 1kg a week. Although ‘La Legión makes the valid point that significant weight gain may be as a result of cultural, pathological and psychological factors, I firmly believe that churros and hot chocolate are to blame. So, there we have it. As we humbly trot off to the gym at the beginning of this New Year, and preferably to one that does not include a bar and restaurant, let us think long and hard about these fine Spanish men who are undertaking one of the biggest battles of their lives - that of losing weight without the comfort of a plateful of

The Blues visited Quesada in the Southern League B Division to play the Swifts and although the overall shots was 91-98 there was a win on only won rink achieved by Joy and Brian Gardiner with Jean Cooper winning 22-10.So just 2 points for the Blues and 12 to the Swifts. The Golds entertained the leaders in the C Division La Manga Crusaders and needed a big win to avenge their defeat in the away whitewash at the beginning of the season. This was nearly achieved with a 13points to 1 victory. The shots margin being 144 to 68 which will enable us to move above them towards the top of the table. With 5 of the 6 rinks winning there are too many names to mention, but Captain Ron Sheldon wishes to congratulate the whole squad including those reserves that turned up to support today’s team. Keep up the good work for the remainder of the season.

La Marina Bowls Club by Barry Latham Here we go again. Another year so have a good one with Health and Happiness to all. Certainly the Explorers had the happiness as they beat La Siesta Apollos at home by 10-4. A good start to 2018. Dave Hadaway, Margaret McLaughlin and Maureen Kidd won 17-12. Mike Stone (must have been the coaching) won 22-13 with the help of Jim freeman (80 yrs old) and Steve Douglas. Don Fowkes, Mike Smith and Jean Fowkes tidily beat their opponents by 2 shots whereas Shirley Hadaway outdid husband Dave by winning 32-5 with great help from Phil Pape and Hilary Cronk. Lovely to see Fred Norris coming along to say hello to everyone. Not so happy were the Pathfinders as they lost away to San Luis Trekkers 11-3. Terry Perchard, Garth Slater and Jean Perchard managed a draw and our only winning rink came from Dave Taylor, Arthur(Notice spelling, Steve) Cronk and Paul Tregoing 20-14. What a battle we had at home in the Winter League against San Luis. It all went down to the last end. John Rae, Steve Hindle, Mike Smith and Anne Stone had a great game to beat their opponents 22-11 while Shirley Hadaway struggled to start with (Skip had a wrong bias on the second end!!!!) but battled back to have an exciting 23-17 win. The match all hung on the last game, guess who was finishing last. Not my fault this time, that Russell Marks doesn’t half talk a lot. Four down I picked the jack up to make us five up then Russ had an absolutely wonderful bowl to get the shot and I narrowly missed with my last wood. They beat us, that was Peter Parsons, Wendy Latham and Dave O’Sullivan 13-12. Great game, great company, great finish. Mind you when all the scores were added up, La Marina had won by one shot, so overall it was six all. Great result. Not so good according the Ospreys’ Captain was the result over at El Rancho with the Ospreys who lost 122. Peter Parsons, Mike Stone and Andy Bartlett played very well to win by one shot 20-19.
On Thursday we played our first Federated 4’s match away ay Country bowls. The points finished even on 4 apiece with us winning on one rink by a big enough score to win overall by 60 shots to 49.Well done to our rink of Linda Hier,Les Davis,Wayne Osguthorpe and Jeff Hier 31 – 11. Friday saw us restart the Southern league with a home game against Greenland Oaks.We managed to chop them down to size with a 113 shots to 89 win, winning 10 points. Our winning rinks were: Jack linehan,Jeff Hier and Barry Evans 25 – 8, Carol Linehan,Terry Hucknall and Wayne Osguthorpe 20 – 14, Pat Patton,Alan Miller and Brian Patton 22 – 10, Yvonne Hurlock,Mick Kirby and John Hurlock 22 – 13 Special mention must be made of Wayne Osguthorpe as this was his first skipping role. All in all not a bad week so keep it up Horadada.

Mike ProBert talks golf
(in assN with Costa Blanca Green Fee svcs)
Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. Winter Condition of Golf cOurses Here in Spain we are blessed with a host of excellent golf courses which are generally in good condition all year around with exception for the periods of hollow tining work which are a necessity. They do all however have one feature which shows itself in the winter months, namely they wear a yellow/brown winter overcoat which give the appearance of the courses being dry and in need of watering but this is far from the truth. In climates such as our here in Spain we have long summer months with extremly high temperatures and limited rain fall and the grass used for fairways and rough need to handle these conditions which is why Bermuda grass is used. The grass used on the greens is different and needs constant watering as it can't handle these extreme weather conditions. Bermauda grass does however turn a yellow/brown colour when the average night time temperatures fall below 7 degrees which is what golfers see in the winter months. I once had a group of Danish golfers at Lo Romero in winter months who complained that I had taken them to a course that was dead and dry so I had to explain the above to them. One week later I stood in the same spot with a different group from Denmark and the course was perfetcly green and we had no rain but temperatures had increased. I hope that the above will help you understand your winter golf experience here in Spain and perhaps give the green keeper a break from ill informed complaints.
We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. A short journey for our first home game of the year on a full 18 hole course, with the new 7 holes now coming into play. The course was in very good condition but very dry due to lack of rain, in fact when the first players teed off, the fairway was covered in frost. We had a very good turn out with it being our first game of the year, and some decent scoring considering the course has not been measured for the slope. Paddy’s Point Golf Society Our first outing of the year was to La Serena. The weather was great and the course was playing tricky as usual. We again must thank a Paddy’s Point for an excellent evening meal and even though Rory And Hazel are cruising the Caribbean their staff looked after us well. NTP hole 3 Dave Beale, hole 9 David (Flash) Gaffney, hole 15 Chris Carey, hole 17 Gene Duffy. Long Drives - Chris Carey and Myra Coull. 2’s pot winners - Dave Beale, Gene Duffy and Terry Fitzgerald. By David Swann A delay of 45 minutes, on Tuesday, 9th January, due to frost on the greens left 19 members of El Plantio 2 Golf Society kicking their heels in frustration. However, when the all clear sounded 5 teams of 3 players(who were given a 6 point advantage) over the sole team of 4, commenced a 'Waltz' team game. Nearest the Pins, Hole 1 - Alan Janes, Hole 6 - Dave Boswell. 3rd Place, Lawrence Wanty, Brian Edwards, Chris Linathan - 73 points. 2nd Place, Alan Janes, Dave Boswell, Gary Needham, Mike Davies 79 points. 1st Place, Dave Swann, Alan Robinson, Brian Coupe - 84 points. If anyone would like to join our Society, we play at El Plantio Golf Club every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. We use both courses - the Par 3 nine hole course and the main 18 hole course, so we cater for all abilities. The membership rates are very competitive, so call for more details. Anyone who wishes to play in the Society as a guest or join as a new member, contact Ian Henderson on 966 716 616 or 636 116 230
Great turnout for The Plaza GS Today the TPGS played at our favourite course, Villamartin. We had 44 playing with 2 reserves! A great turnout again. The greens where fast and tricky, and the tee boxes where virtually all on the white blocks. This resulted in some very average scoring! A big shout out to Cam McHardy who secured the last place and a bottle of wine with a woeful 8pts and 4 of them were on 1 hole ! ??. Best Lady Liz Sully. As usual we had a 2’s pot which was shared by Kev Rose, Kev Harmiston and Tom Malcolm. The nearest the pins were sponsored by the TPGS and the winners were, Christian Attwood, Kev Rose, Wazza Harris, Linda Ottway and big bad Phil de Jaceup. Best guest was James Freeman off his plus 3 hcap with 34 pts. In the silver division David Ottway came 3rd with Bill Gillies 2nd with 32 and Ian Parkinson winning with a whopping 34. In the gold division Declan Crowley came 3rd, Ronnie Temple came 2nd on countback with 34 but the leader on the day was big Phil de Laceup. Well done all! For our next outing we return to La Finca, there are only a couple of spaces left so get your name down quick! Book online at www.theplazagolfsociety.com or slip into our clubhouse The Alehouse at Villamartin Plaza. A warm and friendly pub with steak bakes worth leaving home for.
Las Ramblas Social Club GS On a cold dark Monday morning we played a Texas Scramble starting earlier than usual with our new early T Time schedual the winners with a score of 61.6 were Olga Douglas, Alan Douglas, guests Mike and Liz. San Miguel Golf Society at La Marquesa
36 members eventually turned up to play at the well hidden La Marquesa Golf, of which the society had not played at for many a year due to the fact that there were never enough buggies for hire. That has now been addressed by the owners. Although the course was not in its best condition it was good to see that they were trying to improve the course with plenty of new trees being planted and a new tee being built on the 8th. Scoring was low meaning only three players bettered their handicaps, all winners in their respective categories. Play was a bit slow due to the fact that we were following another society who were playing a medal round. Having a two tee start meant that members did not have to hang around too long for the presentation. The day’s stableford competition results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 4th Ken Flaherty (33), 3rd Keith Stevenson (34), 2nd Norman Padmore (35),
and 1st Chris Hamblett with 38 points. Silver Category: 4th Theo Boelhouwer (33), 3rd Phil de Lacy (34), 2nd Mike Kaylor (34 c/b), and 1st Russell Bailey with 39 points Gold Category: 4th Darren Hancock (32), 3rd Norman Cahill (34), 2nd Roger Cain (35), and 1st Tony Sims with 37 points. Nearest the pins on the par 3’s (open to all) went to Phil de Lacy (hole 5), Ivan Hanak (hole 11), Roger Cain (hole 15 ) and Brian Mulligan (hole17). The Abacus was won by Kyree Skarsmoen. Our thanks go to the staff at La Marquesa golf course for their contribution to an enjoyable day. T.M.G.S. back at old favourite For the first time in 18 months we visited one of our old favourites, Villamartin. We played this course for many years until the green fee was increased so much that it is just not affordable! You may have noticed the up-turn in popularity of the courses on the Costa Blanca this is due mainly to northern Europeans not wanting to risk their lives in Turkey for a round of golf and I don’t blame them for that, however if it wasn’t for the residents of the Costa Blanca there wouldn’t be any courses to play on, why? Because during those dark days of the economic crisis it was the residents that kept the local courses going, now there are more players than tee times available and market forces prevail and the prices rise. What will happen when this subsides? The courses will be chasing the Societies again and in my 22 years of living here this is the 3rd time that I have seen this happen in the meantime those of us who have played on a weekly basis now find ourselves only being able to afford to play maybe two or three times a month! Well back to our visit, we did however receive a warm welcome from the caddie masters Jose and Oliver just as if we hadn’t been away. The course it’s self was in good condition especially the greens and as always true, but now Photo: extremely fast. Playing Gold category it’s full length high winners. scores were not expected
and it proved to be so with no player breaking par, in fact the best score of the day went to the winner of the Gold category, Jim Imrie who returned an impressive 35 points playing from handicap 4. Competition Results: N.T.P.’s Hole 6 J. Imrie, Hole 9 J. Hillier, Hole 13 P. Skarnes, Hole 17 T. Sormul. H. Woerdemann and L. Williamson share the €36 from the 2’s pot. The teams wear similar coloured tops and one could be forgiven for thinking it was a bar full of Scotsmen! The Jackals were the victors on the night with some fine scoring: Mark Todd 180 (first score in an 18-darter singles win), 140, 5 x100, S16-D16 (MOTM); Andy Rutter 140, 3 x 100, D4, D2; Lee Maiden 100 x 2, D1, bull; Paul Miller 105. The Porters only managed 5 x 100+ scores: Jeff Ward 2 x 100, D2, D5; Ray Sanderson 100, Mike Newbury 125 and Yvonne Roofrack’s 100 and fine win with Gnasher against Maiden and Galloway secured her as MOTM for the Porters.
P-P match: Porter House Bees v Pint Depot Queens 6-6 (9 Jan) With only 5 players, The Porterhouse Bees played their rescheduled match against the PD Queens at the Pint Depot this Tuesday following the cancellation of their last home game of 2017. The girls, as always, gave the Bees a warm welcome to their venue and the evening trebles kicked off with the Queens' Lorraine (D2), Debbie & Pamela taking the first against Bees Gilly, Terry & Helen. Into the second with Eddie (134) & Mel v Alison, Rachel and victorious Vi unsurprisingly taking the 2nd (Alison D2) what with the Bees being short of a player. The Bees buzzed into action with trio Eddie, Gilly & Terry (D2 finish) smashing the third treble v Cheryl, Lynn & Lorraine. Onto the doubles Terry & Gilly v Alison & Vi with some good scoring from Vi 119 & 140, but not enough to quash the Kirby's (Terry D2). Bees Mel & Helen beat Debbie & Lynn to go ahead by one leg but sadly a lone Eddie lost out to Pamela & Rachel (D2). After a very tasty chicken dish to warm us up Terry was on fire in the singles taking his third game (D11) against Debbie. Rachel (D12) v Mel, Eddie (D2) v Pam, Helen (D1) v Cheryl, Vi (D1) v Gilly and finally Lorraine (D10) v Eddie took the match to a 6 all draw. Lady of the match for the Queens Vi Turner, man of match for the Bees, Terry Kirby. Thank you to the Pint Depot for hosting this match. Report by Gilly Kirby Las Rosas Bullies v Amigos Misfits 11-1 A great night and a very good win for the home team who took all the triples and doubles in succession and all but one of the singles. Billy Naylor won MOTM for the misfits for his win against Jem Gledhill but Sonya Cooper also put in a good performance. Adrian Buitekaht secured MOTM for the bullies. High scorers for the Bullies: Alan Preston 100, 118; Carlos Montes 2 x 100, 98; John Spencer 100, Cris Montes 120. Top darts for the Misfits: Ronnie Farrell 104, Sonya Cooper 98. Junction Jaguars v Angels 2-10 Once again the score line doesn’t do justice to the Jaguars performance. The chaps went ahead in the first triples courtesy of a first dart out at D4 for Ron Chadwick. The Jaguars then took the next triple with a 3-dart out on 100 by captain de Lacy S20-T20-D10- earning her MOTM. Patty Poo Schofield won her singles against Paul Gripwell to give us our 2nd point. High scores for the boys: Martin Hastings 117, 133; Ron Chadwick 133. Ron finished all 4 legs he played in and was awarded MOTM. High scores for the Jags: Simone de Lacy 100, 121, 140, 95, 92, 80; Patty Poo Schofield 96, 85 x 2, 84; Lisa Ivill 117; Liz Cowan 81, 89; Lesley Eagles 85; Sharon Marshall 85. Angels’ captain Steve Glennon had a nice cake and a very happy birthday!

Hen’s Teeth v Porter House 5 -7 A good result for the toothy cluckers this week, who although didn’t win, came pretty close against a very strong team who had Peter ‘Tufty’ Ayres back in the fold this week. Peter had a cracking two-darter (72) T12-D18 and some high scores 100 x2, 140 but it was captain Brian ‘Gnasher’ Nash that scooped MOTM 125, S3-D20. Rays Sanderson and Hayes scored 100 apiece and Mike Newbury popped in a 125. No Roofrack this week as she is enjoying a week on the slopes I suspect. The Hen’s Teeth also threw a few gooden’s:- Dave Shepherd 125, Henni Oortwijn 102, Mike Tierney 129 and MOTM Joe Cuyt 100, 105. Pint Depot Queens v Wee Rockers 4-8 Well the queens got off to a flying start with Marie (75) Deb and Vi beating Ruth (92, 60) Winnie and Molly. All girls together and Marie got D20 to take the first game. However, Rachel, Ali and Pam faced the boys Allan (85, 100) Jim (79) and Graham (83) and Jim got D4 to make it 1-1. Third treble Lorraine (76) Lyn (72) Maggie against James, Allan (85, 85, 67) Wee Rocker Jim got D16 so they went 21 up. On to the doubles Marie and Maggie (62) against Graham (100) and Ruth. Marie got D4 to level it 2-2. Looked set for a great close night. 3rd double Lyn (67) And Vi (63) couldn't beat Winnie and an in form Allan (85, 100) and D8 by Allan. 4th double Deb (90) and Lorraine (65, 76) v Jim and Molly. Jim was looking for a hat trick which he obliged by getting D1 to take the Wee Rockers into a 4-2 lead. So on to the singles. Pam put up a good fight (76,64) v Allan (100, 83, 60) but Allan wasn't going to be outshone and bang D4 to take the lead to 5-2. Unfortunately, Lorraine (89,87) v Graham (d7) and Rachel (62,71) v James (93,80 d9) couldn't stop them going 7-2 up. So although we knew we had lost we were playing for pride in the last three games. Deb (79) v Ruth and Deb got D1, Vi (61) v Jim (100) and Jim got D13 and Marie (80,79 d1) v Winnie (84). Marie was on a hat trick and didn't disappoint her Queens. It was inevitable that Marie was made "man of the match" and Jim for the Wee Rockers as he got four of their doubles. Report by Cheryl Sleath Singles Competitions: Please don’t forget to submit your entries for the Men’s and Ladies’ Singles Competitions. Round 1 Thursday 1st Feb, Round 2 Thursday 5th April. In an explosive start to procedings, Beltran struck a fierce 30 yard free kick which brought off a tremendous save from home keeper Manzanares, inside the opening minute. Nine minutes later, Saul was put through on goal, but with only keeper Buyo to beat, he horribly screwed his shot well wide of the Torry goal. On 16 mins, a close range header was blocked on the line by Borja, then on 35 mins from a corner, Benja headed just over at the far post from close range. Almoradi totally dominated first half proceedings, as Torry were relieved to enter half time with their goal still in tact. No sooner had I returned from the club cafe with a much needed beer, than Torry surprisingly opened the the scoring. A delightful Juanpe assist found top scorer Marwane, who from the edge of the box blasted home, much to the delight of players and fans alike. Soon after, Vicente provided an inch perfect cross for Borja to force a good save This was a more encouraging performance from Torry

Deep into stoppage time, Marwane stupidly got involved in an off the ball skirmish, resulting in a red card for presumably striking an opponent. With virtually the last kick of the match, Almoradi sub Polo should have won it for them, but with an open goal at his mercy, he shot miles (well, at least 3 yard) wide. This result means that Torry remain in 6th place, with the honour of not only having conceded the least number of goals, but also having scored the least. They are now 8 points behind leaders Jove Espanol, and go into next weekends match at Villena without main striker Marwane, who will now serve a ban of at least 3 matches. For the 2nd week on the trot they pressed the self destruct button, leaving manager Pedreno with an almighty headache as to where future goals will come from!
