Deputy Mayor orders replacement of murdered girl’s memorial hose of us who were living on the Orihuela Costa at the time will remember it well; a murder that shocked the entire neighbourhood.
T
April 2, 2004, we were all in disbelief following the tragic death of 13-year-old Shila Bigdely, a young Norwegian girl who was resident in Playa Flamenca. She was raped and murdered by Tobias, a high
school classmate, as she ran to catch her school bus on Calle Nicolas de Bussi. A friend of Shila's family found the body in the ravine that runs along the back of market street 24hrs after she was first reported missing and the police caught the killer in a matter of days. There was strong DNA evidence and he was duly convicted. Continued on Page 2

Continued From Page One Memorial to Shila However a state of horror continued to hang over the community as the sentence was eventually passed. Tobias was sentenced to just four years in a detention centre. He is now said to be living a pleasant life on Majorca: driving, drinking in the local bars, dancing in the local discos, sharing meals with his girlfriend. We went to memorial services and protest marches over the short sentence given to Tobias. There were lots of them and they went on for some considerable time. For those of us at the Leader Newspaper the memories are particularly significant because the murder also occurred in the week that we launched and Edition One carried the story in graphic detail. Just a month after the tragic event the town hall built a park at the corner of the ravine and named it after Shila. It is still in use today, although newcomers are mostly unaware today of its tragic origins. Until just last week the only reminder was a large memorial cross that was erected in the young girl’s remembrance.
Some residents of Playa Flamenca have criticised the removal of the memory through a Facebook group. "They have taken away a bit of our history. Without consulting us. It is a lack of respect to us all but particularly to women and to the residents of Orihuela Costa,“ said one of the Facebook messages. Another post called the councillor’s decision shameful saying “It was a gender violence murder for which our councillors regularly hold a minute’s. Every time a woman is murdered by her partner they all spill out onto the steps of the Ayuntamiento condemning violence to women, so why now have they taken the decision to dismantle the memorial that was erected in Shila’s memory”? López-Bas said that he tried unsuccessfully to contact the family to explain to them what was being done. Some residents ask how hard, or if he even tried at all! He said that he wanted to make it clear that the park will retain Shila’s name and a memorial to the young girl will continue to feature prominently in the park. “It will simply be something a little more appropriate” the councillor continued, “an olive tree with a simple plaque dedicated to her memory. That way we will continue to show the respect that Shila and her family deserve.”
The memorial, a metre and a half tall, bore a photograph of the murdered girl and following complaints from local resident, at least according to the deputy mayor and councillor for infrastructure, Juan Ignacio López-Bas, has ordered it to be removed. The councillor said that residents have been calling for the removal of the memorial for years as they consider that such a construction, described as being similar to a tombstone, is not appropriate for a children’s play area. “Mothers and fathers of children who regularly play in the park have requested the removal of the symbol because it feels as though they are playing in a cemetery," he said. But the decision does not bear well with everyone.
Meanwhile as we approach the 14th anniversary of the young girl’s murder, although an Olive Tree is now in place there is nothing to indicate that it has been planted in memory of Shila. Front page image: Shila’s father Farhad shortly after the memorial was installed.
Double donation by Flower Club
Torrevieja’s Councilor for NGOs and Volunteers Carmen Morate, was on hand at the double donation made last week by the largely British Torrevieja Flower Club where a total of 3000 euros was presented to two local charities, Stroke Support and Animalistas Torrevieja, with each of the organisations receiving 1500 euros. Morate presented both cheques on behalf of the Torrevieja Flower Club explaining that the money would be used to continue with the great work that they both carry out for the benefit of the communi-
ty on a daily basis. Stroke Support, active since 2007 and located in La Siesta, provides support an rehabilitation to many elderly foreign residents with health and mobility problems while Animalistas Torrevieja, founded in 2012 carries out animal welfare work in the municipal kennels. The Torrevieja Flower Club, which organizes floral competitions in, is known for the generous donations it regularly makes in the local community.

Should the Orihuela Costa be twinned with Apathy?

Two days of pile-ups sees six drivers injured
A
I
f there was a town called apathy, maybe we could twin it with the Orihuela Costa, although if recent indications are anything to go by I doubt that anybody would attend the ceremony.
I have lived on the Costa now for a little over 15 years and in that time I have grown accustomed to the whinging expats who like to moan about anything and everything; the state of the roads, the waste collection services, schooling and education, and whilst many of their complaints are fully justified, when they do have the opportunity to have their voices heard by the local authorities, they do absolutely nothing about it! For the last four weeks the Orihuela Government has been running a campaign asking residents to vote on how a part of the Municipal budget should be spent. I do agree that it could have been better publicised but the information was out there and it did receive a considerable amount of attention, especially on social media platforms such as Facebook. With many dozens of schemes under consideration, lots of them on the Orihuela Costa, you might have thought that the 30,000 good
people of the coast would have used the opportunity to have their say, especially as those of us eligible to do so were each authorised to cast our votes on three different projects. So would it come as any surprise to learn that the number of votes cast by the 30,000 residents of the Orihuela Costa amounted to a miserable total of just 60 votes? Now where has the phrase ‘You get what you deserve’ ever been more appropriate! Despite the numerous improvements that the area desperately needs and the insistence of neighbourhood associations that they be urgently carried out, between the two Orihuela Costa Districts X and XI, only 60 people voted in the poll. In District X the proposal to purchase a high-pressure cleaner for the Coast received 17 votes, repair and replacement of waste containers recorded 16 votes and outdoor fitness circuits got 12 votes, while in District XI the project receiving the most votes was the monthly cleaning and disinfection of waste containers with 8 votes, followed by the replanting of damaged palm trees, with 6 votes. It will be interesting to see the council response!
35-year-old man has been injured in a traffic accident involving three vehicles on the CV-941 in San Miguel de Salinas on Wednesday. The accident took place after one of the cars turned in front of an approaching vehicle. A third car was also caught up in the crash. The accident required the attendance of firefighters from Torrevieja who took almost an hour to release one of the drivers, a 35 year old man, from his vehicle. He was treated by paramedics at the scene but was subsequently transferred to the University Hospital of Torrevieja. On Monday a woman was injured in an accident between Hurchillo and Torremendo after she is thought to have lost control of her vehicle. Although the vehicle rolled across the carriageway the driver escaped unharmed. The third accident occurred on Tuesday with a full frontal crash between two cars on the CV-940 close to Los Montesinos involving a British woman and a Dutch man. . Firefighters from Almoradí released the Dutch driver who was transferred to the Vega Baja Hospital while the woman received attention at the scene.

RYANAIR to axe Glasgow Airport Hub On the same day that Ryanair announced the addition of 11 new routes to its Edinburgh schedule it also revealed that it will be closing its Glasgow Airport hub which could result in the loss of 300 jobs and throughput of approximately 500,000 passengers. A spokesman for the budget airline blamed the Scottish Government for the closure stating that it had failed to reduce Air Passenger Duty (APD) tax after ministers had promised that it would be halved. In addition to closing the base at Glasgow the move will also see a reduction in the number of routes it operates from 23 to 3, one of which will be to Alicante. Glasgow Airport said it was "bitterly disappointed" by Ryanair's decision. Ryanair’s chief commercial officer, David O’Brien, said that the announcement should be no shock to the Scottish Government after they had been told many times that their continued operation in Glasgow depended on the reduction in APD. “There are other markets in the UK and Europe which offer a more compelling proposition."

Cinderella comes to Hondón de los Frailes
T
he Frailes Players’ big night had arrived, Cinderella came to the stage (Oh no she didn’t. Oh yes she did) and the spotlight shone on this first endeavour by a group of people showcasing their talent in the best traditions of a spectacular pantomime. Playing to a sell-out audience over two nights, the theatre in Hondón de los Frailes rang with the traditional chorus of cheers for the goodies, boos for the baddies and the ever popular ‘He’s behind you’, Oh no I didn’t’ and ‘Oh yes you did’ in a brilliant show of audience participation. Who knew that so much hidden talent was to be found, the scenery, costumes, make-up, sound, lighting plus importantly, the music, were of a very high standard and it was apparent that everyone involved were thoroughly enjoying themselves. In praise of the acting talent on show, let us not forget the backroom ladies and gents who worked such miracles. We laughed at
the ‘Shifty Shifters’ who broke the mould by sometimes working their magic in full view of the audience. Buttons, played by Janni Menday, had a wonderful young sidekick, Bows played by Scottie. This young lad has a great future in acting! Fully supported by a wonderful cast of Fairies, Woodland Creatures and Stars, all young children from the local school were the stars of the night who must share their platform with all the other members of the cast. Denise Watson as Cinderella charmed her audience as well as her Prince Charming played by Kim Vance. The Prince was ably assisted by his valet, Dandini, played by Barbara Colclough and to round up the Palace crew was the Herald played by George Rushton. Now for the baddies, one had to feel sorry for Baron Hardup (Paul Menday), his was a tough row to hoe, short of cash and with a terrible taste in women, he married the proverbial Stepmother, (Tim Kay) who
decided that her Really Ugly Daughters, Benidormia (Jim Gallamore and Magaloofia (Len Simm) were going to rule the roost in future and the only place for poor Cinderella was as a down-trodden slavey. True to the best Panto tradition, in steps the Fairy Godmother, (Carol Rowland) to save the day and with the help of her Fairies, gets Cinders to the ball after a miraculous change of dress and the transformation of a giant pumpkin and mice into a coach and horses. The story then followed through, the slipper was lost, found, tried on the Ugly Sisters (boy were they ugly!) and at last, Cinderella emerges triumphant to marry her Prince. A wonderful evening all round with grateful thanks to the Director, Martyn Rissen, the Producer, Carol Rowland and all the wonderful cast, both front of stage and those behind the scenes. But of course none of this would have been possible without the wonderful cooperation of the Hondon de los Frailes Ayuntamiento and our friend, Victor.
Five habits to lose weight without dieting Know how and what you should eat to satisfy your appetite so that you don’t feel hungry Winter is the perfect time to renew those dieting promises. If you take care of your diet and lose weight once and for all those pounds that you have been adding over the last few months will stay off, but you must know these five methods of losing weight without dieting, that will help you become aware of the food you consume. Eat slowly, chewing you food well Never swallow food. Take your time to taste the food and enjoy every bite. It should take about 15 - 20 minutes to eat your meal so that the brain has the sensation that it has been satisfied. Drink two litres of water outside of meals
Eat whole foods
Water helps our body eliminate toxins. Drinking during meals can slow down digestion so nutrition experts recommend splitting it into eight glasses throughout the day. Taking water 30 minutes before breakfast, lunch or dinner helps us also to protect the walls of the stomach and fill us up so we will avoid overeating.
Try to avoid foods that contain refined flours. Make sure the bread, pasta or rice you eat are whole grain. The germ and bran they have will give you all the necessary nutrients, fibre, vitamins, minerals, etc. In addition, these are much more filling products which will help to improve intestinal transit.
Using spices in food
Avoid salt
Many spices help to reduce your appetite and burn more calories so do not hesitate to introduce them to your menu. The spices that help the body the most are red pepper, cayenne, mustard, cumin, ginger, turmeric, saffron and cinnamon.
Get used to cooking without salt or reduce it to a minimum by replacing it with spices, vinegar or lemon. Forget also about processed foods and prepared foods as they contain large amounts of salt.

Council puts kids health at risk Parents at Los Dolses school say that they are absolutely disgusted by the council’s failure to repair the children’s toilets that have been broken for over 5 months. They say that the maintenance of the school is "the responsibility of the City of Orihuela Costa, but they seem to be in no hurry to solve the problem.” T “School administrators informed the City Council’s maintenance department 5 months ago, but they have done absolutely nothing," said School Board member Isabel Llombart. Dirty water from the school drains flows into the toilet and spills out onto the floor. This causes a danger to public health, as well as a danger to the children because of the slippery floors. The toilet has been closed which means that more and 200 students are now having to use the same ablutions causing long queues during break periods and lunchtimes. The problem was discovered by one of the parents, a plumber by profession, after children, teachers and cleaners reported that the floor was always wet, As a result, the service was closed by the Centre Director, Isaac Bonafé, who said “the leakage presented a risk to public health that could create an outbreak of infectious diseases in school,

Rough sleepers see the light thanks to ICA
Fourteen Georgian citizens, all in possession of false documents, have been arrested at San Javier Airport since the beginning of the year, along with a Latvian man who is accused of being their trafficker. The Georgians have been accused of the falsification of documents while the Latvian has been charged with trafficking human beings. A spokesman for the National Police, who made the arrests, said that an investigation has been carried out into a criminal organization dedicated to introducing Georgian citizens into Spain, normally using Barajas and El Prat airports, by using original and authentic documentation. Once in Spain, the passengers were then transferred to different locations in the country, staying in hotels until they can be provided with false documents, identity cards and passports from Eastern European countries. This then enables them to travel to other EU countries where immigration agreements are in place with Spain. With the false documents in its possession, the organization moves travellers to different airports in the country with the aim of moving them to Ireland and the United Kingdom, using Spain not only as a country for their transit but also where they can be provided with false identity documentation. The operation has been carried out by the National Police located in the San Javier airport border post, together with members of the Provincial Immigration Brigade belonging to the Police Headquarters of Murcia, in cooperation with the different airlines that operate at the airport.

magine living without electricity, running water, sanitation – all the conveniences of modern living. People living rough on waste land in Orihuela Costa face just that. But now they have a petrol-driven generator, provided by a local church and a charity, and at least can charge batteries to have electric lighting and can use low-powered electric appliances. It’s all thanks to the contributions from the congregation of the International Christian Assembly in Torrevieja and Help at Home Costa Blanca, who jointly bought the 200 euro generator. It was presented to those living rough by Carmen Perez, president of the charity and church pastor Rafael Restrepo. In addition, the church and charity have given the homeless in the area food parcels, blankets, bedding, clothing, cooking utensils and personal hygiene items. It was the idea of Eileen Mayes, past president of the charity and a member of the
church who realised there was a group of people living from hand to mouth beyond the reach of social services’ facilities. “There are a multitude of reasons why people end up homeless or living rough – mental problems, marriage break-ups, things going terribly wrong in their lives which they cannot cope with. There is no excuse for any country in the developed world to allow people to slip through the net and turn their back on them,” said Eileen. Pastor Raphel agreed. “It is wrong for people here in Spain to have to live this way and there should be somewhere people can go where they have a permanent roof over their heads and have the basic needs for modern living.” Carmen added: “There is some accommodation, but this is in Orihuela town, miles away from the coast and there is no provision here. Sadly the council in Orihuela think most people on the coast are all financially secure second home owners who come here for holidays. “The truth is far from that. Sadly there are
THE MOUNTAIN BETWEEN US: too many ex-pats living on the coast who don’t register on the Padron, don’t vote and don’t figure on council statistics, and as the Padron is used to allocate funds per area, much money which should go on providing facilities on the coast instead goes to Orihuela town and the surrounding villages.” Eileen added: “We need to get people on the coast organised to get this dreadful state of affairs sorted. People forced to live rough because of a lack of social services care, are out of sight and out of mind. But a lack of council funding for Orihuela Costa is there for everyone to see every day of the week. It’s staring you in the face with roads full of unrepaired potholes, of pavements not maintained, and if you need an ambulance or fire service be prepared to wait ages because they have to come from quite a distance. Lives are at risk and it needs to be sorted.” She added: “These homeless need to have a secure home in which to live. Not be living under the constant threat of eviction on top of all the other hardships they are facing.”

LEADER Pilar council likely to end the financial year with Zero Debt

Pilar de la Horadada’ s government coalition has now approved a Budget for 2018. The accounts agreed by the PSOE and Vecinos por el Pilar amount to 26,843,825.31 euros and will now ensure that a number of previously opposed projects can go ahead.
Improvement in Government Borrowing last month Snow and ice bring the UK to a halt just like Brexit is paralyzing politics; the Brexit soap opera also affects the value of the pound and the euro. It would be so much easier if all the negotiations were done in a secret bunker and politicians emerged in a year’s time with a simple conclusion, without all the nonsense we have at the moment. But of course 24-hour news channels want to know every detail.
The Councilor for Finance, José Tomás Saura, explained that with the approval of the new budget the council will be able to "regularise municipal accounts and regain control of investments. For the last three years we have worked with the budgets that were agreed in 2015 but we have still been able to deliver normal services. Now that we have an updated budget we can begin to fulfil our additional promises," he said.
This week the commentators questioned the UK’s ability to actually reach a deal with the EU. So of course the pound fell on fears that business will struggle to deal with a ‘cliff-edge’ Brexit. The pound could face further volatility today (Friday) as a key speech from Theresa May is expected to outline five ‘tests’ for Brexit; the pound could slip if markets feel her aims are unachievable. The good news is that government borrowing improved last month and the current account may actually be in surplus. Its two years late but no doubt George Osborne will still be pleased that his harsh austerity policy bore fruit. Meanwhile there are important European elections as the Italians go to the polls on Sunday after their parliament was dissolved 9 weeks ago. The other soap opera continued to deliver with Trump announcing huge tariffs on imported steel and aluminium into the US. Share prices slid but the US dollar gained slightly, probably due to other data.
The situation in Pilar has changed since José Francisco Albaladejo defected to the government from Vecinos por el Pilar last year. His move ensured a government majority of one seat, 11 councillors to the opposition’s 10, as a result of which he was rewarded with the offices of Infrastructure, Services, Housing, Animal Welfare and Citizen Participation.
Among the investments that will can now make will be the new medical facilities in Pinar de Campoverde at a cost of 1,700,000 euros, the repair of the Mil Palmeras footbridge, street paving, the improvement of green areas, the Rio Seco natural route, refurbishment of sports tracks and much more. Remember: Shop around as you could save between 1-4% depending on who you use (4% of £50,000 is EUR 2,240). Don’t be greedy, you will never buy at the optimum time. Use a currency broker who offer a personal service where you are allocated one contact who gets to know your situation. The scores this week: GBP/EUR 1.12 (down from last week) GBP/USD 1.38 (down from last week) EUR/USD 1.23 (very similar to last week) Data correct at noon on Friday 2nd March www.thecurrencyexchange.co.uk
The one main project that has not been included in the budget is the completion of the controversial cultural centre «La Paloma». Albaladejo explained, that has been postponed because, as agreed with the PSOE, any solution can only be considered on completion of a public consultation. The works on the centre were halted almost 12 years ago when the initial budget rose from 2.4 million to 12 million. A council representative said that with a regular surplus in the closing balance of the town’s accounts in many of the recent years and another surplus forecast at the end of the current financial year it now very much looks as though they will end the year with zero debt.

Last month was no exception and Robin Hargrave, who Co-ordinates the distribution of all the poppies in our area, was on hand to give the good news. The amount raised in 2017 was a tremendous 169,622.40€. This was an increase of almost 3% on the previous year. Robin explained that not only was this money raised by our hard working Branches, but also smaller Church groups, supermarkets (near Barcelona), those flying in and out of our airports and individuals of all nationalities who supported the Charity. He paid tribute to them and thanked everyone for the continuing support for those in the Armed Forces community when in need. On the Orihuela Costa the branch raised an amazing 45,000, equating to 383.88 euro per branch member, and 27% of the District total, which apparently now also puts the branch in line for the Noel Rogers Trophy which is awarded to the Overseas Branch raising the greatest sum per member worldwide. The Royal British Legion provides lifelong support for the Armed Forces Community and we are often asked – How is the money spent in Spain? The answer is, there are a great variety ways, but the following are just a few examples Stair lifts
Mechanical wheelchairs and scooters Refurbishing homes so beneficiaries have a better standard of life, ie changes to a bathroom or bedroom Wood, oil and solar panels have been pur chased for isolated properties Spectacles and dentures. So we would like to thank everyone who continue to support a Charity which is almost 100 years of age. You don’t need an Armed Forces background to attend a Branch event. It is a great opportunity to make new friends. So to find a local Branch, please visit our website: www.britishlegion.org.uk/counties/spain-north. The former mayor said “If the charges are kept secret, how can I possibly defend myself.” Miguel Zaragoza, the former mayor of Santa Pola, has exercised his right not to declare as the Court of Instruction number 2 in Elche has opened an investigation against both him and his sister Pilar, a provincial deputy of the Popular Party Miguel Zaragoza and the former councillor of Personal, Jorge Perelló. Having testified at the Alicante Provincial Police Headquarters all have now been released with charges which, according to judicial sources, include embezzlement, bribery and fraud. Zaragoza said that he has not been offered any information about the facts that form the accusation and as such he has decided to
in order to obtain details of the accusations against me," Zaragoza said, " but I was never given any explanation." “If the charges are secret, how can I possibly defend myself, how can I show that the management of the clinic was completely transparent at all times?", he added.
Bribery investigation surrounds Former Santa Pola mayor. exercise his right not to declare, “as would any other person whose rights have been violated". To date little has been made public about the case other than the accusations revolve around the management of the Clinic of Gran Alacant, during the management of Zaragoza as mayor. "Once I was made aware that a case against me had been opened, I requested information from the government team led by Mrs. Seva,
Zaragoza said that when he has knowledge of the facts and the charges being prepared against him, he will hold a press conference, but in the meantime "I would like to insist on the transparency of my management at all times and confirm that there have been no irregularities in my performance ".
Fostering or dog walking at AOSKA Animal Protection Centre With Nick Moore
ASOKA is an Orihuela council funded animal rescue centre situated in the village of San Bartolome, close to Callosa and Redovan. Although partially funded by the Municipality, utilities and some staffing, a large proportion of the work carried out at the centre can only be done so through donations, volunteers and the generosity of the public. The medical bills for one injured dog alone recently cost in excess of 2000 euros. The centre usually has about 160 dogs and 100 cats in their care. They also have a mare, a pony, two goats and pigs and as they can only re-home the farm animals with someone who holds a REGA licence they have had these animals in their care for many months. ASOKA get all types of dogs and cats. With dogs there are many German Shepherds, Mastins and lots of puppies. Sadly people do not spay their
females so they end up with many litters of unwanted puppies. One downside is for every puppy they get it makes it harder for them to home the older dogs. Another big problem is that people are not prepared to pay to have their dog chipped. This is very cheap and guarantees that you will receive a phone call once that chip is read. The centre will soon be starting a campaign to encourage chipping. ASOKA work with groups across Europe to rehome their dogs sending them to Germany, Norway, Finland, Belgium and many to the UK. They publish photos and videos through which adopters can see a dog they like. The centre then homechecks the adopter and if they are suitable the dogs are send over on transports. Volunteering is possible on many levels. Hands on dog walking and caring for the animals in the animal refuge in San Bartolome is very straightforward and much needed, especially weekdays! ASOKA has volunteers who speak many languages so language is not a problem. It could actually help with your Spanish. Also being a foster home is vital to their work. There are many animals waiting for transport dates and getting the animals out of the refuge (which can be a very scary place) into loving temporary homes is wonderful for the animal, but it's also a very positive experience for the fosterer.
Nick Moore who works at the centre is very happy for people to call him regarding volunteering and fostering on 692 747 685 (mornings only). However, please do not call Nick if you have found an abandoned dog. You must call the local police on 092 AOSKA has Open Days twice a year and they also attend many events throughout the year with their fundraising items such as tshirts, badges etc. Next up is Merca de Arte in Orihuela 18th March. Why not go along and say hello. If you can help in other ways, however, donations
are absolute life-savers in many ways, and it’s not only money that can make a difference. Donations of old blankets and bedding can keep the animals warm in the winter while dog food and toys keep them cared for all year round. Of course financial donations, from as little as 3 euro, a month can also make a big difference. Bank: Cajamar / Caja Rural – Cuenta: 3058 2501 00 / 2720903876 Website: www. Protectoraoriolana.org. ‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper.
He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
U
p the Amazon
Have you noticed how social media and the UK press love to take a swipe at Amazon whenever they can? Of course, this is just one of the least attractive parts of the human psyche; pure delight in building up and praising a sportsman, singer, film star or company, and then taking considerable pleasure in destroying them. Personally, I have few quarrels with Amazon, since as a Brit living in Spain and the Canary Islands, I have benefited greatly from some of their services. As an author, many people buy my books from Amazon and it would be foolish to bite the hand that feeds me. In my opinion, their Kindle service is second to none, and I doubt I would enjoy life quite so much without it. I can enjoy newly published books at a fair price whenever I wish without the delays and costs involved in ordering a physical book from the UK. No, I do not crave or wax lyrical over “the smell and feel” of a physical book; just give me my Kindle. I am also well aware of the supposed poor working conditions in Amazon warehouses, but I suspect that conditions there are little worse than conditions faced by most unskilled workers involved in warehouse activities each day of their working lives. Indeed, I have the benefit of knowing several people who work in an Amazon warehouse who tell me a very different story to that portrayed in the press, TV and social media, so I am prepared to keep an open mind on these issues, whilst also recognising that working conditions in

warehouses generally need to be improved. I have received a few messages recently from expats complaining about some aspects of service received from Amazon in Spain. Readers may or may not know that expats living in Spain and the Canary Islands can use Amazon in a number of countries for their purchases, including Amazon UK, Amazon Germany and, one would think logically, Amazon Spain. Unlike the operations in the UK and Germany, Amazon Spain appears to be in a state of perpetual confusion and suffering from particularly poor management when it comes to customer service in the Canary Islands, and the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla, where services and choices offered by companies such as Amazon are of great help. For myself, living in the Canary Islands, Amazon Spain is often a huge problem. Although I buy into Amazon Prime in Spain, which in theory, means no postage costs for most items, I invariably find that most items that I wish to order cannot be delivered to the Canary Islands anyway and, if they are, they are subject to a ‘handling charge’ from Correos, UPS and others acting for the Aduana (the tax authority). I rarely have any problems with Amazon UK or Amazon Germany. Of course, it is the tax differentials between Spain and the Canary Islands that are the basis of this problem, but I am a firm believer in ‘Where there’s a will, there’s a way’. Some time ago, anything ordered from the Spanish Peninsular would attract IGIC (the equivalent of VAT/IVA in the Canary Islands). Even though this tax is 7 per cent, there would invariably be a ‘service charge’ added by the courier - UPS, DHL or Correos, which would often exceed the value of the goods being delivered. The Canarian Government rightly intervened some time ago and it was then deemed that tax would only apply to items over the value of 150 euros imported into the Canary Islands. Problem solved? Not a bit of it. Now residents of the islands find that whilst low value items do not attract tax, they still attract a ‘handling charge’ (DUA), which often exceeds the value of the item ordered. Whist this may be worthwhile for higher value items under 150 euros, it still means that residents of the Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla are not regarded as part of Spain and discriminated
against. I understand that this contravenes various articles agreed by the European Union, so it rightly remains a matter of concern for many islanders. If you do order from Amazon Spain, and find that the tax or handling charge imposed is unreasonable, my advice is that you simply refuse delivery and ask for it to be returned to the sender and purchase costs refunded. In addition, do send a complaint to Amazon so that they are fully aware of a continuing problem, although I suspect that the usual bland, ‘comment bank’ response will be generated. I now do this as a matter of course. Indeed, the postman arrived a few minutes ago with a delivery of washing pods, which Amazon Spain keep urging me to try at a very special price. I paid 9,94 euros for these, but the postman has just requested 14,96 euros before he would hand them over. I refused delivery and will now buy locally. I am hoping that, in time, someone at Amazon will finally get the message and begin to treat the Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla as intrinsic parts of Spain. Available in paperback from Amazon, Waterstones and all good bookshops, as well as on Amazon Kindle. Join me on Facebook: @barrie.mahoney

Our winning rink was John Jukes, Dennis Wade and Wayne Osguthorpe 16 – 15 There are only 1 game left in each of the Monday and Friday leagues and 2 games in the Fed league. Lets try and finish the season on a high.
La Marina Club Finals The weather was lovely for our Club Finals Weekend and some of the bowling was outstanding. So well done to all the participants from start to finish and best of luck to all those going on to the Champion of Champions.

El Rancho Bowls Club On Monday the Raiders were away to Horadada Falcons, where there is never an easy game. The Raiders however came away with just the one rink, but with a little more in experience and several close matches. Meanwhile the Pintos had a Bye. On Friday the Mustangs, played host to Vistabella Picadors and played well to take 4 rinks and the overall shots. Sometimes a match can change with a shot or shots sliding through a tight gap or an excellent wood making a shot up from 5 down, it just gives you a good feeling. But I saw good bowls on all rinks and thoroughly enjoyed the match. Geoff Jones, Jane Hamill and Stew Hamill 13-15. Barbara Jones, Sheila Cooper and Carolyn Harris 22-12. Ann Taylor, Shirley Edwards and Jim Taylor 25-13. Irene Thomson, Jim Gracie, Eddie Thomson 21-28. Judy Foley, Keith Cunningham, David Whitfield 21-12. June Whitworth, Henry Ryder, Richard Lee 22-10. Meanwhile the Broncos played away to Montemar Toreadors and struggled a little against a strong team on their home mat. Although they came away without a point they have produced some good results recently and it is only a game, to be enjoyed. Janet Parsons showed how it should be done. Not a win so far this week, what can Friday bring? The Merlins entertained the E.I. Claymores in the morning and managed to lose this one as well 10-4. Perhaps it was the drizzly rain that affected us. Bill Jones, George Furzer and Reg Jackson won 24-21 and the only other victors were Barry and Wendy Latham and Jean Tregoing 18-14. Disaster week with all losing. In other words the other E.I. team of the Cavaliers came over to us and won 10-4. The only two rinks to win were Don and Jean Fowkes and Tom Spencer 19-17 and Dave Hadaway, Mike and Anne Stone.

Mike ProBert talks golf
(in assN with Costa Blanca Green Fee svcs)
Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. Golf Course Review – La Serena The La Serena Beach and Golf Resort is located close to Los Alcazares and within a short 10 minute drive from San Javier airport. The main feature of the course is the 500 year old Torre del Rame, which I am informed was originally built as a watch tower for pirates from North Africa. The course designer was Manuel Pinero the former Ryder Cup star from the winning 1985 team who has created an excellent test of golf with water hazards on sixteen of the eighteen holes positioned to catch shots which are short in length and with a left to right ball flight. To find the golf course travelling on the AP7 motorway from the North leave the motorway at exit 790 and follow signs for Los Alcazares (centro). After immediately passing under the AP7 motorway, take the first exit signposted ‘camino’ and La Serena golf and follow this narrow road for approx 1km passing the course on your left and with the motorway parallel and to your right. At the junction at the end of the road turn left passing over a small roundabout and the clubhouse is on your left after approx 150 metres. Travelling from the south also leave the motorway at exit 790 but then turn immediately right and you will be on the narrow road to the course as described above. The clubhouse is modern and large in size with excellent restaurant, shower, toilet, locker and changing facilities suitable for one hundred players and a well stocked professional shop. In my opinion this is what I call a ‘Marmite’ golf course because you will either love it or hate it. The designer has included water hazards on sixteen of the eighteen holes and additionally has strategically positioned bunkers in the ‘bail out’ areas on the opposite side of the fairway to the water hazards.Whilst this appears at first to be a golfer’s nightmare, in truth any player of average playing ability should be able to position the ball away from the trouble on the course. If however you hit the golf ball short and ‘crooked’ to the right with a big slice you will find this course testing on the patience and costly on the pocket given the price of new golf balls. The course opens with a difficult long 494 metre or 544 yard (yellow tees) par 5 hole, which is flanked for the whole length by water on one side and out of bounds on the other and you, will be more than happy to start your round with a par on this hole. The front nine holes
do present the better golfer with some good birdie opportunities but if you get too aggressive and take liberties with the course it will jump up and bite you.The back nine is the tougher of the two ‘halves’ and there are some ‘interesting’ holes and in particular the 292 metre or 321 yard (yellow tees) 10th and the 275 metre or 303 yard (yellow tees) 13th holes with water in front of the greens are ‘make your mind up’ holes where you can either play the ‘percentages’ or hope that ‘fortune favours the brave’ and take on the course designer and be more positive with your shot selection. The course is usually in good condition and well maintained and is one that you should seriously consider playing when arranging your golfing trip, if you like Marmite of course! Gold category winners 40 members and guests competed in a Stableford competition on a very short course! Most of the tee boxes were under repair so the male members found themselves playing their 2nd shots from some very different places, in some cases they were too close to the green! High scores were expected and because of this we were not disappointed. The best score of the day came from Scotsman Jim Imrie, scoring 41 points playing of 5 handicap. Apart from the tee boxes the course was in good condition but the greens for most of us proved to be a little tricky, that is unless your name happens to be Bill Wylie who managed to drop his tee shot 3 ft. from the pin on his N.T.P. Rockets Golf Society at St James Gate On a wet Tuesday morning we left to go up the AP 7 for our away game at Font de LLop. Hopefully we were hoping it would cease but we were wrong. We had one of our best turnout ever of 28 players and I must congratulate them for all turning up on such a wet day. We were playing for the Inaugural Trophy and the format was Medal and some decent scores were returned considering the weather. Inaugural Trophy winners
Alfies Golf Society - 1st Rd Eclectic Cup & Keys Bar Trophy St Andrews 29 members and guests from Alfie's GS travelled to Vistabella GC for the second meeting of the year on February 22nd. It was the first round of the Eclectic Cup and the golfers played for The Keys Bar Trophy St. Andrews which was the first time this cup was played for. We had a later than normal start time at 12:20 but despite the delays all members of the society managed to make it back to the bar before it got dark. The course was ok but the fairways could do with some water but the new 7 holes make the course a full 18 hole golf course. The presentation was held back at Alfies’s bar where a buffet was enjoyed by all the players, kindly donated by Alfie’s bar. We continued with the 2 categories “GOLD” & “SILVER” but the performance of the day was made by Gulli Kristjansson who played off a handicap of 5. Winner of the day in the silver division was Rita Potters with 37 stableford pts alas Rita had to leave before the presentations were made. Second went to Luke Branch with 36 stableford another solid performance from Luke to compliment his performance at Villamartin.. The Winner of the gold division was Gulli Kristjansson who had a magnificent score of 40 points playing off a handicap of 5. Second place went to Ove Collin who also had 40 points playing off 19 but was pipped by Gulli on countback. Best Guest went to Mac McClean with 32 stableford points. Many had second thoughts as most of us met up in El Raso before heading down to el Valle. On the way down on the motorway it started to rain but full of hope we all carried on. On teeing off, the starter stated that at 11.am the rain would come. He was wrong as it started to rain at 11.05, only lightly for a few minutes. By 11.45 it was pouring down but most of us plodded on. It soon eased off and after that we only had intermittent rain but it was getting a bit chilly. The course was in a lovely condition and was enjoyed by all Results for this outing: Gold division and overall winner was Alan Gifford with 32 points, Gold division runner up, Jeff Ellis Silver division winner was Phil Harris with 25 points on count back, Silver division runner up, Buck Taylor Nearest the pins on par 3 Martin Morgan, Andy Trefry, Jeff Ellis & Phil Harris, Nearest the pin in 2 on par 4 was Jeff Ellis, Nearest the pin in 3 on par 5 was Ray Muttocks 2`s pot was not won and will be carried on to next outing, Football card winners: Eric Owens & Phil Harris
thirty nine members and three guests at Vistabella. In terms of playing the newlyadded 7 holes, most were Vistabella virgins. Most of the participants were impressed by the lay-out. However, the rock-hard fairways meant even duffed shots ran like balls on buggy paths. As always at this course, the undulating greens sorted out men from the boys. Sadly, again, slow play was an issue with some groups taking more than 5 hours to complete the round. The knock-on effect led to early flights waiting in the clubhouse for more than 2 hours for the presentation. Ready golf, gents! Surprisingly, given the new holes and tricky greens, the scoring in all categories was worthy of praise. Top score of the day belonged to Brian Butler (winning on countback from Mike Inns) with a magnificent 39 points. This week’s Abacus prize was sponsored by Adrian Rudge, golf professional at Vistabella. Instead of the usual bottle of red wine, the bottom scorer – John Osborne received a voucher for an obviously much-needed golf lesson from Adrian. The day’s results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 4th Norman Padmore (35), 3rd Norman McBride (38), 2nd Mike Inns (39) and 1st Brian Butler (39 points on CB)
Silver Category: 4th Theo Boelhower (32 on CB), 3rd Brian Mulligan (33), 2nd Roger Webb (34), and 1st Phil De Lacy (36 points)
Helena and Paolo Trophy We were greeted with mixed weather at Font del Llop where we competed for the above trophy sponsored by the proprietors of the La Marina Sports Centre. Some impressive scores resulted and will mean several handicap reductions. A special mention for Steve Jones, who must have been disappointed not to take home the trophy with his score of 42 points. However, Lynn Leigh with a magnificent total of 43 points took the trophy and Steve had to settle for two nearest the pins. The gold award went to Steve Warner with 34 points, who also collected a ntp prize. The other ntp went to Jimmy Scott. Only one 2 which was won by Jeff Wisniewski. Our next meeting is a return to Alicante golf on 15th March, first tee 1010 at a cost of 45 euros. Contact Alan Craig 634347788 as soon as possible as the list of players is almost complete, and Alan will be trying to get extra tee times. Our next social function is a quiz night on 13th march. Please contact Iain Lyall on 634 326 451 if you wish to attend.
Best guest was Roy Foster with 36 points, with Joan Balkwill in runner-up position. Our thanks to the staff at Vistabella for their contribution to the day. El Capitan v Las Rosas 9-3 Well what a match that must have been with some cracking scored from both teams. John Walker clocked up 180 no.3 along with 3 x 140, 132 and 121. El Capo’s, please remember to rotate the dart board occasionally as Johnny is wearing out treble 20! Las Rosas put up a good fight and two of their chaps, Alan Preston and John Spencer also hit the max. Other than that, the result sheet was bereft of the actual finishes so presumably there weren’t spectacular 3-darters?

Carp R Us Carp R Us Fishing Club The second round of the Spring Series was fished on the Eden stretch of the Segura. After recent work by Carp-R-Us and The Lime Bar (thank you for your efforts) most pegs are now usable and there are now four easy access pegs. The stretch may not provide hectic sport but generally most people catch, as was the case in todays match. First was Tom Marshall with 4.44kg caught on pole and feeder using bread. Second was Steve Collins with 3.22kg caught on pole with maggot. Third was Jeremy Fardoe with 3.18kg and fourth Steve Fell with 2.52kg. The club is always keen to get new members. rescheduled match against the Angels. We knew it wouldn't affect the stats on the table win, lose or draw and the Queens did lose 10-2, but it was good to play nevertheless. Phil Waller was in great form scoring 180 and 3 140's. Doubles came for Paul (3) Steve (2), Phil (2) Dave (2) and Martin (1). Queens Pam and Rachel played well in their singles ensuring it wasn't a whitewash. Man of the match: Phil for the Angels and shared between Pam and Rachel for the Queens. Next game on the regular Thursday was against Porter House Bees. The Queens had some respectable scores in the first half and so did the Bees but they just edged it by getting their doubles a little quicker so it looked like the Queens were heading for a 6-0 deficit at half time but Queen Maggie (helped by Ali) stopped the rot and we took one game. Other doubles for the Bees came from Ivan, Eddie, Edward (2) and Gilly and so it was 5-1 at half time. On to the singles. Great games between all players and Mike, Ivan and Eddie took the first 3 singles. Queens Pam and Maggie then took the next 2 and Edward the last one so it finished 9-3 to the Bees. Man of the Match: Edward for the Bees and Maggie for the Queens. Reports by Cheryl Sleath- (now retired of Eduardo’s Vet Surgery) Fire Station v Amigos Misfits Well Green Watch from the Fire Station hit the ground running in their first shout this week. Amigos Sonya (117), Paul Lock (84, 85) and Dickie 89, 70, D10 may have rattled them but not for long. The trio of Viv Perryman, Roger Phipps and Ralph Christie’s D7 evened things up despite a couple of 90+ scores by Amigo Lowe. Captain Cooper then took the 3rd triple for her trio with D2. In the Pairs, it was much the same, tit for tat, with ladies Tracey and Sue (D17) getting the first. Ralph and Roger were no match for Lowe (03) and Lovely Leah’s 95, 115, D5 though but Viv and Terry Bridger doused the Misfits flames with Terry scoring 92, 76 and D1 to bring the half time score to 3-3. In the singles, Firemen Roy Walters 117, 81, D10 rather chompled Ronnie Farrell’s baubles, but Sonya rallied again for her team with 92, D2 against Ralph to level it up again. Paul Lock then took the Misfits ahead with D2 out. Firelady Sue 84, D20 (MOTM) faced down Leah (MOTM) and then Phipps and Captain Les Adams did the final damage to see the The Fire Station gain their 2 match points and 7 legs on the League Table.

Shoddy Torry disappoint in rain soaked defeat
O
h dear, oh dear, 2 steps forward and 1 step back, I fear!! After 2 spirited displays, Torry have slipped back to bad old ways, that of not taking chances and gifting opposition silly goals. When will they learn - if ever! Having said that, it doesn't help that they have yet to field the same team in consecutive weeks since the beginning of the season (for whatever reason).
Take this latest debacle for example. Out went Borja and Tenza from last weeks victory at Benferri, replaced by youth product Mani and new signing Silver. Silvestre Lopete Wiliamsola (aka Silver) hails from Guinea Ecuatorial, is a striker, his previous club was Alcasser of preferente division group 2, and he was signed during the week.

close range, allowing Torry keeper Vidal to make a routine save.
Pinoso CF ............................2
Torry got their act together, making a number of raids on Pinoso's goal, but alas they all came to nothing.
It appears that the potential new owners have been to a number of different locations in Africa recently, talent spotting, and could be taking over the club as early as next Thursday, when a meeting with club directors has been scheduled.
(if ever) the Vicente Garcia grandstand is to be reopened, for the sight of a few hundred fans getting soaked in the second half was not the best PR advertisement. Thank god that my memory is still reasonably good, for it was virtually impossible writing notes whilst holding an umbrella, as my clothes and equipment became wetter and wetter surely the press should be afforded some sort of protection from the elements?
In my (and many other Torry fans) opinion, their number one priority should be determining when
Jose Maria should have put the visitors ahead after only 2 mins, but he badly mishit his shot from
Against the run of play on 8 mins, a delightful through ball split a half asleep Torry defence, allowing Victor the simple task of sliding the ball home from 10 yards. Back came Torry, equalizing some 7 minutes later through a wonder goal New boy Silver crossed from the right to the far post, where Samu was lurking with intent. His overhead kick looped over keeper Omar, slotting just inside the far post, making it 2 in 2 starts for this very impressive front man. On 25 mins, a long range effort by Perea was tipped around the post by Vidal, then 10 mins later up the other end, Samu forced a similar reaction save from Omar. Juampe was almost left with egg on his face on 38 mins, his sloppy pass was intercepted by Perea, whose first time effort eased just wide of the far post. With seconds remaining of the first half, Ramon seized on a loose ball whilst Torry defenders watched on, allowing him space to drill home what turned out to be the winning goal.

responsibility this time. Samu or Silver would have been obvious choices, but no, it was midfielder Pablo Coria who slammed the spot kick against the post, before being scrambled away to safety. Apart from a halfhearted appeal for handball inside the box, Torry never really looked like getting that elusive equaliser. As it transpired, they needed to thank their lucky stars that they didn't concede another, for late in the game, Sergio missed an absolute sitter when put through with just Vidal to beat. Next weekend, Torry visit Callosa who are just above them in the league. Table below at time of going to press
Pedreno's half time talk must have been good, for only 2 minutes into the new half, following a goalmouth scramble, Silver shot wide of the post, although he really should have buried it. Beltran (somebody tell him that a no 9 is meant to score goals!) hit a decent long range effort which was well saved, before Walid was brought down in the area for a penalty. The last (and only other) time Torry have had a pen this season was at Hercules, and that was missed by Beltran (who else?), so it was a relief that he was not given the
Win for Scotland Women at Pinatar Arena A
comprehensive 2-0 win for Scotland against New Zealand was played out at Pinatar Arena on Saturday afternoon in the first of a double header between the two teams in 72 hrs. Man City striker Jane Ross opened the scoring for Scotland late in the first half with Arsenal winger Lisa Evans making sure of the win with just 10 mins of the game remaining. While Scotland dominated for long periods of the game they had to withstand a period of New Zealand pressure, particularly in the 2nd half. However, Sophie Howard and Jen Beattie formed a solid partnership at the heart of the Scotland defence and the pair looked
