ORIHU ELA MAYOR BACK IN CHARGE

The Mayor of Orihuela Monserrate Guillén of the Los Verdes green party, has returned to lead the municipality this week after months off sick following serious heart surgery. In his first public address on Wednesday, he thanked the acting mayor, Antonio Zaplana of the PSOE, who has now been relieved of his duty as “accidental mayor” to return to his normal role within government. He also thanked everybody who had sent best wishes and the

“numerous expressions of affection” he had received. Guillén then explained how he had attempted to return to work on a number of occasions, but decided to heed the advice of his doctors and wait until they approved his return to the theatre of politics in Orihuela. Now rested and clearly keen to make the most of his remaining time in office, Guillén has already said that he will not be contesting the next elections, he highlighted some of the problems that are still waiting resolution, which he hopes to conclude before leaving office. Amongst those important matters are the ongoing subject of waste disposal, the connected and infamous Brugal case and the illegal waste dumps, including at La Murada, where “We have three months to get these residues removed, thus ensuring the health of the citizens”. Guillén also made it clear that when he “took the rod of command”, apart from solving the problem of the waste service, he had said that he would “clean Orihuela after it had become a corrupt local institution” and added “not without some satisfaction” that the expulsion of “almost all of the corrupt members of the PP” is a satisfactory conclusion to that end, as it was “one of my dreams, to see a decent and clean Orihuela”, and that although “I think a lot remains to be done, there have been important first steps”, and for that he is “calm and satisfied”. Guillén went on to apologise to the people who put their trust in the “first progressive government in 25 years” and who may have been defrauded. He has attributed these failures to an “even more shabby” situation that they imagined before

Monday, 9th March, 2015 reaching the government, highlighting a debt of 65 million euro, which “has been reduced to 43 million in three years”, and has led to a recognition of fiscal stability and payments to suppliers “that we had to accommodate to save the difficult economic situation of the City that was left by the government of Mónica Lorente, who “forced the council to divert economic efforts we wanted to make” for the city infrastructure, but especially for the districts and the coast. Concluding to criticise the Partido Popular for having dedicated their time to “disrupt the honest and honorable work of the government I lead”, in a situation that is also marred by the CLR, “a broken party that has failed to accept that we won them the game”. Finally, Guillén took to Facebook to thank everybody on social networks for their support, saying, “Today I returned to work in the town hall”, and assuring his followers that “During these three months left until the end of the mandate, I hope to be able to conclude some of the issues that are still pending, and, as such, leaving my position as mayor with some satisfaction”.

PEDRO MANCEBO WILL NOT STAND AS CLR CANDIDATE The spokesperson for the liberal CLr party of Orihuela, Pedro Mancebo, has announced this week that he will not be on the list of candidates to contest the elections in May, and will not be standing as a candidate to govern in the next political term. The announcement was a surprise to many people, including residents of the Orihuela Costa,

who believed that Mancebo would be fighting the elections with the intention or hoping to get the position of Mayor. However, the politician who briefly held the position of Councillor for the Orihuela Costa has now said that the reason for not standing is a “personal decision”, but also said that it is time to “renew the lists”, and add “fresh faces” and “ideas”, thus making way for a new wave of politicians from all political groups set to lead Orihuela in the next term. In a press conference this week, Mancebo said that “I think you can still contribute a lot and try to recover and straighten the damage that these two years of socialist and green government solidarity has caused”. “We have to see how many people are willing and able to lead an electoral list, considering that politics is an exercise in risk, with the possibility of injury from demagoguery and lies”, he concluded, adding that whoever does stand as a candidate “must be very brave”.

NEW START AS PODEMOS MOVE UP A GEAR Podemos (‘We can’) was founded just over a year ago with pretensions of breaking the two-party domination in Spanish politics. In Orihuela the Party’s arrival has been a little more recent with local Secretary General, Vicente Mateo, only taking up office a little over 6 weeks ago. But now, with only a matter of weeks to the Local Elections, he is moving forward and beginning the urgent process of recruiting a pool of canvassers and voters in order to contest the May ballot under the name “Queremos Orihuela” (We Orihuela). To create a pool of voters the party is required to submit a list of 1500 names of Orihuela citizens who are registered on the municipal electoral roll, which must be authenticated by a notary or by the Secretary of the Municipal Corporation. Mateo said that "this initiative is necessary and will enable the party to build the tools to put back the institutions which will serve the people in the common good, participation, transparency, regeneration and change" If you want to participate in this joint project,

Podemos Orihuela has prepared a document that can be accessed via the web by going to: docs.google.com/forms/d/1FMYuf97hwe4irYZz GrrvnOskbMwJmPiieDoaPBz0/viewform. Those interested can submit their data and in so doing contribute to a new start for the City and region of Orihuela. There will also be part members canvassing over the coming days and weekends on the streets of Orihuela and the Orihuela Costa, as well as at the Party headquarters With the union of people - Podemos Orihuela

ORIHUELA POPULAR PARTY STILL FRAGMENTED Pepa Ferrando is just one of six members expelled by the Partido Popular in February

The provincial Partido Popular group in Alicante are working to ensure the expulsion of the six members of the local PP in Orihuela who refused to vote in an anti corruption motion. The provincial secretary of the PP, José Juan Zaplana, has confirmed that the party has been in contact with the city clerk in Orihuela to confirm the documentation required to ensure that the six are no longer representing the PP in the opposition of Orihuela, and is currently processing the required certificates to confirm their lack of status within the PP. The six members, Pepa Ferrando, David Costa, Victor Bernabéu, Encarna Ortuño, José Antonio Aniorte and Araceli Vilella, were expelled by the PP in February, but they remained representing the group in the last plenary meeting. Meanwhile, in a press release, Ferrando has criticized the provincial body, and claimed how they

are making hundreds of people of Orihuela “casualties” of a “war” against the executive whereas they refuse to allow them to represent the party, after these members have “stayed true” to the party and the people of Orihuela for the last four years. Ferrando also states how the PP continues “skipping their own statutes, because with the expulsion of the legitimate president, the next step was to implement a management and popular assembly convened within six months”. But in Orihuela, they bypassed the internal democracy of their own party, “looking after neither for the rights of the members, nor the will of supporters and activists”. With hundreds of signatures supporting Ferrando and the renegade group, it is becoming increasingly likely that a new spin-off political party will be created and will stand in the elections in May against the PP and other political groups.

TRAFFIC SLOWS UP CHILD DEVELOPMENT Children who attend schools in heavily trafficked areas show a lower cognitive development according to a new study led by researchers from CREAL.

FEED NOT FINES In an agreement as part of the campaign to control the numbers of stray cats near the harbour of Torrevieja, official campaign members who feed the cats will no longer be fined by the police, if they can show that they are licensed to feed them as part of the campaign. Anybody interested in becoming an officially licensed feeder can register by email at proyectocestorrevieja @gmail.com, or via the Facebook page, coloniagatos Torrevieja.

WORK TIME After increasing by 172 people in January, unemployment across the Vega Baja fell by 65 people in February, with 35,102 people now registered as unemployed. The figures were helped by Orihuela and Almoradí, where 61 and 31 people respectively found work. On the other side of the scale, 36 people in Pilar de la Horadada are now out of work, along with an unemployment increase of 14 people in Torrevieja and 11 in Callosa de Segura.

Many schools are located in close to busy streets, with traffic air pollution which peaks while children are at school. The research, part of the BREATHE project, was to evaluate the relationship between longterm exposure to traffic-related air pollutants at school and cognitive development measurements in primary school children. "We have found that children attending highly contaminated schools had lower growth in cognitive development than children in schools less polluted. In this sense, children who attend schools with high levels of pollution, both in the classroom and on the playground experienced less growth of cognitive functions essential for learning, the 7% against 11%. These results were confirmed using direct measurements of traffic related pollutants at schools. This can have consequences on school performance and behavior”, explains Jordi Sunyer, principal investigator of the study. The researchers from CREAL, an ISGlobal alliance research centre, developed a prospective study, from January 2012 to March 2013, of 2,897 children, aged seven to ten years, from 39 schools in Barcelona and Sant Cugat exposed to high and low traffic-related air pollution.

UNEMPLOYMENT NOW THE MAJOR CONCERN IN SPAIN The barómetro del CIS, a National Opinion Poll conducted by the Madrid Centre for Social Studies, shows that unemployment remains the problem for 78.6% of Spaniards, a slight decrease from 79.4% in January 2015 However the concern of Spaniards regarding corruption in the country seems to have dropped back, falling by 15 points in the February poll released last week. Corruption, though, remains the second most concern for 48.5% of citizens, just behind unemployment, but the figures are vastly reduced from those polled last November and December, when they reached 63.8% and 60% respectively. Unemployment now remains the foremost worry for 78.6% of Spaniards, a slight decrease from 79.4% in January 2015. In third and

fourth place are the economy (24.9%) and politicians and the government (22.9). Both of these concerns have also decreased, having previously ranged between 30-35% in the last year. Health is another major concern for 12.1% of Spaniards, with a monthly rise in February of two points, whilst education worries, at 9.5%, show an increase of nearly 2.5 points.

ORIHUELA JOINS EARTH HOUR Orihuela city will be joining in with the global phenomenon known as Earth Hour this year, making a gesture towards highlighting the need to raise awareness of the fragility of the planet and combat global warming.

FAR, FAR AWAY The Museo DidĂĄctico e Interactivo de Ciencias de la Vega Baja (Mudic) will install four telescopes in Orihuela institutes for students and teachers to watch the solar eclipse that will occur on the 20th of March. The details of the eclipse cannot be seen with the naked eye, hence the reason for installing the equipment. In addition, the IES THADER will open to the general public so that citizens can also come to watch the eclipse.

ALL WHITE Whilst the finishing touches are being put on the summer events list for Orihuela, the councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer, has confirmed that a market will be taking place in July on the coast, similar to the Roman, Medieval and Fisherman´s markets of the past, but the theme this year will revolve around everybody dressing in white.

Earth Hour began in 2007, in an initiative that saw the lights go out on the 28th of March; the event which is organised through the WWF has continued to grow ever since. At 8:30 pm local time, wherever you are in the world, the idea is to switch off your lights, and in fact any electrical items that you can, leaving them off for the full hour. As the wave of darkness sweeps across the globe, it highlights how over consumption of energy is leading to irreversible damage. With key buildings around the world being plunged into darkness, for many businesses in city skyscrapers or for many government buildings, the lights are turned off at the end of the business day the Friday before Earth Hour. So Earth Hour is more of a fade-out in some ways than a black out. This year, in Orihuela, the government has pledged to turn off the lights on the outside of the town hall, and the iglesia de las Santas Justa y Rufina. As part of the global WWF initiative, you too can get involved, simply by switching off your lights for an hour on the 28th of March at 8:30pm, or by getting more actively involved through one of the many events and schemes around the world. For more details, visit www.earthhour.org.

COMMITTED TO THE CONSERVATION OF SEA TURTLES All boat owners in Torrevieja should now be in receipt of Publicity material telling them of the protocols they should follow if they come across distressed Sea turtles in the region. This is the result of an initiative currently being implemented by Torrevieja Marinas and the Yacht Club in conjunction with the Ministry of the Environment. The Torrevieja authorities currently manage over 2,000 berths for boats and recreational sports in the area, which tends to increase during the spring and summer, the months which also the highest concentration of sea turtles off the coast. While the incidences of capturing sea turtles by recreational fishermen is extremely rare, it is common for casual sailors to find loggerheads with problems when prompt action can mean the difference between life and death for these endangered animals. It is always the case that Sea turtles encountering difficulties at sea or those accidentally caught in

nets, should always be handed over to the authorities said a spokesman since they may be suffering from some kind of illness or disease which may not be visible to the naked eye (intestinal obstruction, infection, gas emboli) that could well require veterinary care or assessment. As such those coming into contact are always advised to dial 112. Of the 10 loggerhead turtles recovered alive in Torrevieja since 2006, seven were rescued and passed onto the authorities.

SAN ISIDRO MURALS TO BE SHOWCASED The Murals of San Isidro will be showcased for the fourth time in an event which will take place between the 20th and 22nd of March. The Councillor of Culture, Rosa Martínez, announced the event this week, explaining how an additional 38 murals will be added to the 135 already exhibited in the previous shows at the open-air museum in a neighbourhood now well known for the “paintings, colour and poetry of Miguel Hernández”. Martínez recalled that the task has meant much more than just the recovery of the murals, but through the Tribute to the Pueblos de España de 1976, when San Isidro was converted into the artistic, cul-

tural and social melting pot that is already part of rich history and touristic attractions of the city, which has significantly increased the number of visits of people from all over Spain and parts of Europe. Despite a reference to the life and work of the poet already having been done, there is still a lot of work needed to ensure that this cultural symbolism is maintained for future generations to enjoy. Artists now have until the 9th of March 9 to present their sketches and choose three facades which could be transformed. Subsequently the format presented will be needed to calculate the colours and the amount of paint needed.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

Wine and Sex in The Canary Islands It may seem an unlikely story, but the relatively recent popularity of wines from the Canary Islands came about as a result of 'Wine and Sex' parties organised by a local entrepreneur, who seemed to have an obsession, or fascination, with Tuppersex parties, which are based upon the highly successful concept of Tupperware parties. Instead of those delightful, sealable, plastic boxes, it was sex toys that were on offer. This operation seemed ideal for the introduction of a heady mix of sex toys and Canarian wines to titivate those with money and nothing better to do, which many experts say was the start of the boom in wines from the Canary Islands. At first sight, the Canary Islands seem an unlikely source for some of the excellent wines produced today, since it is the most tropical of wine regions in Europe. Those who doubt the success of these wines should remember that back in the 15th century, sweet wines from the Canary Islands were hugely popular, both in the UK and Germany. Indeed, Shakespeare had a thing or two to say about this sweet wine, then called Malmsey, in his plays; for example, in ‘Twelfth Night’ and ‘The Merry Wives of Windsor’. For five hundred years, the archipelago has cultivated grape vines that are unique, thanks to a rootstock that is ungrafted. Since the islands are relatively isolated, a ravenous aphid called phylloxera that destroyed most grapevines in Europe in the 19th Century, has never taken hold. Most European vines are now grown onto American rootstocks to provide immunity, whilst vines in the Canary Islands are from ungrafted rootstock, which makes all the difference to the flavour of the wine. Nowadays, most of the islands' wine is drunk by its vast numbers of tourists, as well as the locals. However, some wine continues to be exported, particularly to the USA, where it is regarded very much as a wine for the connoisseur. Most of the islands' wine production comes from Lanzarote and Tenerife, but with an increasing output from the islands of Gran Canaria, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Palma. It is true that some of the islands are too hot and humid for the growing of grapes, but each of the islands have their own micro climates and individual typology that makes the growing of wine not only possible, but successful. Vineyards based within a lunar like terrain, such as on the island of Lanzarote, or small stone terraced vineyards at high altitudes, together with volcanic soil adds to the flavour of the islands' aromatic wines.

A farmer at work in the volcanic vineyard at La Geria Not all attempts at producing wines have been successful. One enterprising vineyard, for instance, began to produce a sparkling wine in response to local demand. It was a banana-based wine, and a logical step since many bananas are grown on the islands. Sadly, this imaginative project came to an abrupt end, because many bottles started to explode as a result of on-going fermentation. I visit each of the Canary Islands in turn each year and make a point of trying at least one of the local wines; I have yet to be disappointed. So, if on holiday in the Canary Islands, do add a little uniqueness to your holiday. Instead of ordering that usual bottle of Rioja, do be a little more adventurous and try a bottle of wine produced in the Canary Islands; you won't regret it, but don't feel obliged to join in with the sex parties, unless you really want to! NOTORIOUS JUNCTION CLAIMS TWO MORE VICTIMS Officers from the Guardia Civil attended a crash at a notorious junction on the CV903 between Daya Vieja and Formentera on Thursday, after yet another collision resulted in serious injuries. Two vehicles collided at the junction, with one being forced along the road. The driver of that vehicle was taken to hospital suffering serious injuries. Neighbours living near the junction have been calling for a roundabout to be installed for some time, owing to the historic risk that the junction has posed. In fact, the risk has clearly been recognised by the

road planners on account of them adding extra signs that indicate the junction is one classed as being of a dangerous nature. The sign is clearly insufficient in reducing the risk to road users, as was clearly the case once again this week. The junction is in the heart of a mixed industrial and residential zone, and sees two minor roads cross a major and faster straight road. The layout is clearly suitable for a roundabout, especially as it is already constructed on one side of the road, and yet drivers still have to risk emerging onto the open and fast flowing road in order to cross or deviate.

EUROPE'S “CAR OF THE YEAR 2015” The winner of the international “Car of the Year 2015” is the new Volkswagen Passat. The award was announced last week at the Geneva International Motor Show. One of the oldest awards in Europe, “Car of the Year” has been honouring the best new releases in the car industry every year since 1964. The jury, consisting of 58 European motoring journalists from 22 countries, had nominated seven candidates ahead of the final. In the preceding months, the candidates had undergone detailed testing, comparisons and evaluations based on criteria such as economy, comfort, safety, driving characteristics, functionality, design and technical progress. In the 52nd edition of the traditional competition, the new Passat triumphed over its six rivals with a total score of 340 points. The new Passat, in all its versions, is one of the most successful midclass cars in the world and with 1.1 million units (in 2014) one of the highest-volume series of the Volkswagen Group worldwide. Now in its eighth generation, the bestseller is regarded as one of the most innovative cars in its class. Thanks to advanced engineering methods, it was possible to introduce a significantly more dynamic design (including lower body, longer wheelbase, larger wheels). Despite the unaltered length in the interior dimensions, the new Passat has still expanded considerably. At the same time the latest technologies have been added: they include sys-

tems such as Active Info Display (a completely digital instrument cluster), extendable head-up display, and also systems such as an appbased Rear Seat Entertainment for tablets, Front Assist with City

Emergency Braking and Pedestrian Monitoring as well as three further global firsts: Emergency Assist (vehicle stops in emergency), Trailer Assist (assisted manoeuvring with a trailer) and Traffic Jam Assist. The new Passat is available with ten direct injection turbocharged petrol and diesel engines and will arrive at dealerships beginning in late summer of this year.

REGISTERING YOUR VEHICLE IN SPAIN SPANISH LICENSE PLATES & REGISTRATION DOCUMENT

Registering a non-Spanish vehicle in Spain is a complex and potentially costly procedure. However, you maybe exempt from Spanish registration tax by getting Spanish number plates within one month of entering the country. But to do this, you need to become a resident. Linea Directa has been insuring expat drivers in Spain for over a decade and understands all the steps involved. Below we outline this process. STEP 1: OBTAINING A CERTIFICATE OF CONFORMITY This is a statement by the car’s manufacturer that it conforms to EU regulations. You will need the car’s chassis number to complete this straightforward process which you can do online at www.eurococ.eu/en/certificate_of_conformity. The charges for this service will vary according to type of vehicle, make and country of 1st registration. STEP 2: CURRENT LOG BOOK The vehicle’s original log book showing your name as the owner, the vehicles age and a valid UK address. You will also need the bill of sale for the car. STEP 3: RESIDENCY IN SPAIN The Spanish residency certificate (Certificado de Empadronamiento) is your official proof of residency in Spain. Your local town hall can provide you with this document. You will need to take your passport and proof of Spanish address (rental contract, contract to purchase or property deeds). STEP 4: OBTAINING A SPANISH MOT CERTIFICATE All vehicles over 4 years old must be roadworthy and clearly display a valid ITV sticker. The ITV (Vehicle Technical Inspection) must be tested at an authorised centre, just as for an MOT test. You can find out the location of your nearest ITV centre on DGT website (equivalent to the DVLA). You can also call your local centre to make a booking. If the centre is busy, especially pre-summer, this can save a lot of time. The cost can vary but generally is around 40€ for petrol-engine cars and 56€ for diesel-engine cars. STEP 5: OBTAINING THE SPANISH EQUIVALENT OF A TAX DISC The Spanish Tax Agency can provide your vehicle with a valid “tax disc” for Spain, which must be carried in the car when in use. You will need to complete the relevant form online and pay the amount according to your car’s tax band. You can carry out all these procedures yourself or you can seek the assistance of an accountant to do this for you. We hope the information provided in this article is of interest. Hay Fever Season and Driving Problems Suffering from allergies and being a driver are a combination of factors that poses a potential risk on the roads.

In a new campaign by the DGT, it is revealed how a sneezing fit of just 5 seconds, means that a car travelling at 90 kilometres per hour covers a distance of 125 metres, the distance greater than a football field, when the driver´s attention is distracted as a result. The sneezing fit can often last longer than 5 seconds though, perhaps 8, 10 or more, with the vehicle continuing to travel without the driver´s full attention. On a normal, dry road, the overall stopping distance for a car travelling at 90 kilometres per hour is calculated at 65.7 metres, just half of the distance covered during our 5 second sneezing fit. During the reaction time alone, the vehicle would have travelled 25 metres. In other words, in the event of an incident ahead, there would not be enough time to react and stop.

Sneezing is only one symptom of an allergic reaction, most commonly Hay Fever at this time of year, severe itching of the eyes, irritation, congestion or a runny nose, light sensitivity and many more combinations of symptoms, all make driving particularly problematic for sufferers. Drugs to combat the physical symptoms can help ease the dreaded onset of Hay Fever, but some of these drugs also cause problems with driving, sometimes causing drowsiness, or other problems, and can interact with prescribed medication. Sufferers of Hay Fever might have already realised that the pollen season has started early once again in Spain, but it can vary depending on the geographical location. Within the car, keeping the vehicle clean, inside and out, can remove much of the residual pollen, as can the installation of filters in the air distribution system. Keeping windows closed, wearing sunglasses and avoiding key problematic times such as dawn and dusk can all ease the symptoms. All antihistamines sold in Spain should carry a pictogram on their packaging, depicting a car within a danger warning signal, which is designed to alert drivers of the possible effects on the ability to drive safely. However, it may not be present on imported medication. But, if you see this sign you need to be aware that your driving ability is likely to be affected. If you are taking any medication, make sure you read the instruction leaflet, or check with your doctor or pharmacist about interactions with other medication and driving. The website from the Sociedad Española de Aerobiología, www.polenes.com, can offer information within Spain, and allows you to select the different regions to see the current status of pollen and help you plan your driving activities.

SAN JAVIER RECO GNISED AS THE BEST SMALL AIRPOR T IN EURO PE By Jorge Mascot The Airports Council International awarded San Javier airport a prize as the best European airport with fewer than 2 million passengers per year. The information was published in LaVerdad, where they interviewed the Murcia-San Javier airport director, Mr. Pedro Vicente Gallut. This distinction has been received just as Aena, the Government of Spain and the local Government are in talks for the closure of San Javier to open Corvera. It is surprising that San Javier continues to lose passengers and airlines despite the excellence of their services. Also, it is difficult to understand why Alicante keeps gaining travelers in the same area in spite of the fact that the prices in San Javier are cheaper. Mr. Gallut stuck to his capacities and referred back to Aena’s version: “the airlines decide where they want to fly to, despite the marketing team“. Apart from the financial crisis, there isn’t any other official explanation for the fact that San Javier lost nearly half of the users they used to have. However, the airport director thinks that this decrease has slowed Airport Director Pedro Vicente Gallut,

down. The prize shows the good work of the people here. It is an honour for everybody here, for Aena, and for the Autonomous Community of Murcia. This will boost tourism in Murcia said Mr. Gallut, who has been in charge of the airport since May 2013. The transfer to Corvera It is taboo to talk about the San Javier closure or about Corvera. The works council is mobilised to impede the closure and they refuse moving into Corvera. In the meantime, another piece in LaVerdad informs that Murcia’s Government and Aena expect to sign an agreement within a month. This agreement would mean the end of commercial flights in San Javier to give way to Corvera. Aena is determined to go ahead and are even interested in bidding for Corvera. The plan is that the employees who are willing to move into the new airport keep the same working conditions. They will give them the possibility of working in Corvera and want this clause to be included in the tender. However, a date has not been fixed for this tender yet. According to this article, the president of Murcia, Alberto Garre said that Aeromur – the company owned by Sacyr which had the license to manage Corvera – is causing problems regarding providing Corvera’s inventory in order to define the terms and conditions of the tender. Two requirements have been sent for this purpose, but nothing has been received so far. In the opinion of Murcia’s Government, it will not be possible to open Corvera this year because of these problems and they are considering going to courts. Six companies interested in management of Corvera Despite the difficulties Sacyr is causing, sources of the local Government say that there are six companies interested in the contract for the management. LaOpinionDeMurcia informs that there are six companies which have shown interest for the airport. Among them are Aena, Ferrovial and Lavalin. The autonomous community and the Ministry of Development are considering a period of between two and six months for the closure of San Javier. This period of time will start counting when Corvera is operational, but the problem is that there is no date for such purpose so far. With thanks to www.flightconsulting.com

ENVIRONMENTAL ART IN PILAR Some of the urban walkways of Pilar de la Horadada have been given a temporary facelift this week, thanks to an exhibition that combines art, nature and architecture through a new project being conducted by the Department of Culture.

Having spent just 896 euro on the display, the areas have been transformed through the installation of artistic collaborations that highlight the beauty of the area, whilst enhancing the immediate surroundings of parks and flower gardens, combining with street art and sculptures to offer a unique experience to those with a keen eye for something a little different. The artist Dante Márquez is responsible for the work, with symbolic imagery of the sunrise, seaside and coastal landscapes that make the town of Pilar de la Horadada an already attractive location to live, work and stay. Spread over a 2 kilometre route, visitors will be able to see impressions of some of the local wildlife such as gulls, rabbits and even the endangered white-headed duck, so that “citizens travelling along the boulevard can discover important parts of the environment”, whilst also serving as a tourist attraction, said the mayor, José Fidel Ros, upon launching the exhibition.

ANOTHER RECORD YEAR FOR LINEA DIRECTA Linea Direct announced that they have closed 2014 with a net profit of 94 million euros, an increase of 3.3% on 2013. CEO Miguel Angel Merino said that this is the fourth consecutive year of profitability, with profit before tax of 133.9 million euros, 4.25% more than the previous year. In the period, premiums totalled 650.6 million euros, up 1.3%, breaking the negative trend of recent years due to the success of advertising campaigns and discounts for good drivers. The total portfolio of insurance policies had exceeded 2.22 million customers (+ 6.3%), after adding 130,000 new policies. "2014 has been a good year all round," stated the CEO. Home insurance now caters for 332,000 policies (+ 19.2%) and 56 million euro turnover (+ 21.9%) reaching number 16 in the industry’s

national ranking Merino also said that the company now has put behind it "the worst years of the crisis" having achieved very strong results, with more customers and a better cost structure, developing the "necessary financial muscle" to face a new stage of growth. The CEO has ruled that the company grow in the future through mergers or acquisitions since its intention is to focus its organic growth, as it has done so far. So he explained to acquire a company is a waste of resources and pointed out that, today, there is no entity with a similar profile Hotline. He predicted that 2015 will be an "exciting and challenging" year In which Linea Direct expects to show further growth in turnover, customer base and profitability.

Vendors in Eurozone Feel the Sting of a Strengthening Pound British people selling a home in the Eurozone are seeing sharp falls in the sterling value of their sale with the weakening euro, reported SmartCurrencyExchange.com in March, adding that many expats relocating back to the UK in 2015 may have to reevaluate their financial situation as a result. “This year’s ongoing exchange rate movement isn’t good news for everyone, in particular British expats and holiday homeowners who are selling a property in euros,” said Charles Purdy of SmartCurrencyExchange.com. “Typically, many British vendors will have a target amount of sterling they would like to achieve from the proceeds of their house in, for example, popCharles Purdy ular expat locations such as Spain, France or Portugal. A weaker euro makes achieving that target more difficult, especially when Eurozone property markets are generally static at the moment, so prices are barely rising, if at all. “Expats coming back to the UK who are relying on the sale of their overseas home for resettling may need to adjust their plans and should take into account the effects of currency rates on how much sterling they repatriate. Since the start of 2015 alone, the euro has weakened by around eight per cent against sterling, but over the past year this figure has risen to 14 per cent. The best way to keep in touch with the currency markets and maximise the amount of sterling you get from repatriating funds is to use a currency transfer specialist, who can keep you updated on the latest rates and developments and recommend currency buying strategies to suit your particular circumstances. If you're committed to an overseas property sale, but concerned about future exchange rate fluctuations, you could consider securing a guaranteed exchange rate for a future repatriation transfer by using a forward contract.”

TRAFFIC SOPT IN ALICANTE

Drivers travelling through Alicante’s polígono industrial de Ibi couldn’t believe their eyes as they came across a new roadsign on Tuesday. Blamed on Council staff, the road junction had been repainted ‘SOPT’ when it should actually have said ‘STOP?. The mistake lasted only a few hours however by which time the council workmen had returned to correct their error.

THREE WAYS TO MAXIMIZE THE BENEFITS OF WAITING 1. ADJUST YOUR POSTURE This is a simple one but easy to forget. For the average person, this will mean rolling the shoulders back while allowing for a slight raise of the chin and letting the head slide back an inch or so, putting the ears in alignment with the middle of the shoulder, then relaxing the muscles of the neck and jaw. This takes a great deal of stress off the neck and opens up the thorat more for fuller breathing, thus effecting greater oxygen intake and release of carbon dioxide. 2. SLOW DEEP ABDOMINAL BREATHING Research has suggested for some time now that the beneficial effects of slow deep abdominal breathing are significant. In activating the parasympathetic nervous system and reducing sympathetic activity, we see a reduction in blood pressure, heart rate and anxiety. As well studies suggest that a reduction of oxidative stress occurs via a reduced hyperglycemic state after eating. Typically acute hyperglycemia after eating produces free-radicals, which is normal; however with the increased degree of oxidative stress the body has to deal with in modern day living, any reduction of this stress is always a helpful measure. Slow deep abdominal breathing has even been shown to reverse baroreflex sensitivity in diabetics which is thought to be an underlying dysfunction in diabetic cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy.

3. THINK THOUGHTS OF GRATITUDE AND OPTIMISM An immense amount of research exists on the physiological effects of positive thinking and leaving plenty of room for much more to be done. If psychosocial well-being is not enough, the health benefits of positive thinking appear to reach even further, from reducing cortisol to cardiovascular benefits to reducing inflammatory markers, it even shows association with improved sleeping patterns. These areas of associations are also some of the prime players in many chronic disease processes, which become important when thinking about our increased susceptibilities to chronic diseases as we age. These minor physical and mental adjustments are 3 easy ways to practice good preventative medicine and self-care. They are completely free, no tools or supplies are necessary, are not at all inconvenient and actually transform a potentially inconvenient and aggravating situation into valuable time saved and put to excellent use.

SABA ENTERPRISE DIVISION: Poor start to the week for Sycamores and Chestnuts(SABA Voyager Div.) both failing to field a full team due to illness & injury and taking the penalties accordingly. EL RANCHO BOWLS CLUB

Saturday was the start of our club championships finals, with both singles being played in the morning. Both matches were splendid and close run matches, particularly the men’s with David Whitworth taking the match by 21-19 from Merv Armstrong. In the ladies Margaret Odell pulled off a win over Shirley Edwards, after a long battle. On Sunday the men’s pairs final proved to be an excellent battle, between the strong pairings of Merv Armstrong and Stew Hamill against Jim Gracie and Eddie Thomson. In the early stages Merv and Stew drew away, but gradually Jim and Eddie pulled back and took the lead in the later ends, going into the last end with a 6 shot advantage and thence taking the match, despite losing the final end. A splendid match for the spectators and I’m sure for most part the players, perhaps more so for Jim and Eddie. Monday found The Broncos entertaining The Pathfinders from La Marina, played in glorious weather. Both teams played well and took 3 rinks each, with The Pathfinders taking the overall shots by a small margin, a splendid match all round. On Friday The Mustangs travelled to San Luis to play The Tigers, but despite good play we came away with just the 2 points. Maxine Wright, Gary Newson and Rod Wright 11-19. Barbara Jones, Jim Gracie and Geoff Jones 13-16. Sheila Cooper, Malc Sykes and Carolyn Harris 12-25. June Whitworth, Keith Cunningham and Stew Hamill 12-28. Brian Taylor, John Skipper and Eddie Thomson 10-25. Jane Hamill, Irene Thomson and David Whitworth 21-18. The annual England versus Wales Bowls match was played on Sunday 1st March at Monte Mar Bowls club and England demonstrated how to lose despite winning more rinks than they lost. With 3 wins and a draw out of the 6 rinks played they still managed to lose the overall shots total which was the agreed deciding factor by 99 shots to 105 and this allowed Wales to retain the trophy for yet another year. All 6 rinks were very tight so much so that England’s best winning rink was Denise Ashbury, Charlie Watkins, Frank Close and Val Hignett who won 17 – 14 to take the prize of an England Mug each. England’s other two winning rinks were Sue Kemp, John Moss, Dee Lane and Chris Collier who won 18 – 16 and Mary Lockley, Margaret Sadler, Tony Finan and Norman Vickers winners by 17 – 15. Sandie Thompson, Carol Bloomfield, Arthur Brown and Alan Ashberry had an honourable draw 17 shots all with the Welsh team of Linda Richards, Alan Edwards, Bobby Vanner and Mary Cummings, while the two Welsh teams who did all the damage were Sheila Chorley, Dudley Davies, Pat Rafferty and Barry Evans who won 23 – 18 while proud winners of the engraved Welsh bowls towels were Joy Gardiner, Cliff Plaisted, Ann Allen and Brian Harman with a 20 – 12 win. Both teams will be looking to produce their best form in the upcoming 4 Nations tournament were they will be joined by teams from Scotland and Ireland. May the best team win (Provided it’s England).

Country Bowls Report 6 March By StJohn Broadhurst Two home games and one away game to report on this week. It was a home game in the SABA Discovery league on Monday, 2 March for the Flamingos who entertained the Pioneers from La Siesta in the Valle. It was another fine performance by the Flamingos, which saw them win on three rinks as well as the long game. Unfortunately the Pioneers could not field a full team so the Flamingos were able to claim an extra win and 10 shots. Winning the three games were Sandra McIlroy, Ray Emmett and Peter Dix 27-8. Ben Noke, Dennis Birkett and Peter Whitehall 29-9. Doreen Statham, Pat Emmett and Trish Dix 26-14. Overall shots Flamingos 118 (10 pts) Pioneers 75 (4 pts). The Flamingos have only lost one of their last eight games and with two home games left are pushing hard for a top three finish. The Clarets had the away game and on Thursday, 5 March travelled to Greenlands to play the Bulls in a Federated Fours match. On a lovely sunny afternoon it was the Bulls who took the honours, but well done to our one winning rink of Del Gunning, Joel Fernandez, John Palmer and StJohn Broadhurst 1817. Overall shots Clarets 37 (2 pts) Bulls 54 (6 pts). Final game of the week on Friday, 6 March and the Ramblers welcomed the San Luis Lions to the Valle in a CBBA Southern league match. It was a tough game for the Ramblers against a strong Lions team but the Ramblers gave a good account of themselves to win two rinks and draw one. Well done to Del Gunning, Bryan Kirk and Karen Kirk 23-11. Pat Patton, Billy Price and Brian Patton 15-14. Carole Donnellan, Ben Noke and Dennis Birkett 16-16. Four qualifiers to compete in semi-finals on 30th April Four pairs now remain after this week´s qualifiers and not a bad four at that. Biggest surprise is no Pat Abrams and Lee Maiden who went out in a bit of a whimper to the eventual qualifier at Evolution Mike Smith and Del Lister. Another fancied duo Mark Filer and Ray Harvey also crashed out first round to Simon Williams and Shaun Smith. The fancied team of Nick Spicer and John Eyre qualified dropping just the one leg in three matches and barring broken bones will be favourites at the semis. I mentioned Smith and Lister last week as a pair to watch out for and sure enough they qualified. My prediction of the in-form Smith doing all the work, was totally wrong as Lister took five of the six doubles in a nice display of arrow throwing. I am not surprised Paul Dowington and Peter O´Rourke will be competing in the semis, both can play a bit, they are a team the other three will be hoping to avoid. The Breakaways venue was the most difficult to predict, but victors Brett Badlove and Stuart Clark will give a good account of themselves come semis time. Clark can raise his game when necessary, but more importantly his game has been very consistent this term. Badlove needs to support his partner with steady scoring and the odd double. They will be the outsiders on the night, but don’t dismiss them. Down at the Hub venue all three Hyenas pairs entries were coincidentally drawn at home. It definitely gives a side the best opportunity of a representative in the semis. In fact two of the three played each other in the final, more of that later. The fancied team of Mark Filer and Ray Harvey (Busters) faced Simon Williams and Shaun Smith in the first, Filer taking first blood on D2 and opening with a 140 in the next. Williams levelled on D12 to set up the decider, which also went Hyenas way, Smith D4 obliging with the honours. Nick Spicer and John Eyre made short work of Alan Strong and Sarah Simpson, Eyre scoring 2x100, 81 and the first double, D4, Spicer 100 and the winning D16. Jaguars Wendy Hayward and Pat Schofield gave a good account of themselves in the first round winning two of three playing Keith King and Mike Jones. Hayward 127, 116 and 3 additional 80+ as well as D4 doing the damage, Schofield taking the first double. King nailed the middle leg on D19 but to no avail the Jaguars taking the winning leg. Williams and Smith couldn’t find their earlier rhythm Qualifiers Brett Badlove and Stuart Clark

LEADER By Paul Durrant

when taking on fellow Hyenas Joe Miller and Joe Qualifiers Del Lister and Hawkins. Even though Smith found a maximum and a Mike Smith ton in the second leg, Miller 2x100 and Hawkins D8 made it 2 zip for further progress. More Hyenas followed in the portly shapes of Spicer and Eyre, this time facing the Jaguar girls of Schofield and Hayward. Three tons from the striped ones, including a 140 from Eyre plus D20, left the girls a little shell shocked, but they picked themselves up in the second with some good scoring but not enough as Eyre made it 2-0 on D10 and with it the pleasure of playing Hawkins and Miller in the final. Hawkins 100 and Miller 100 made a steady start with the throw, but Spicer 2x140, 100 and D8 broke their opponents throw and look likely to make it 2-0 with Spicer hitting 2 more tons. Miller came to the rescue with some heavy scoring, partner Hawkins taking out 72 for all square. Miller continued bombarding the T20, but Eyre 121, 100 and Spicer 121 and a bull finish ended the game with a 2-1 score line. At Evolution, both Meerkats pairs were despatched with relative ease, to accompany the other two Kats teams failing to proceed to the semis. Pat Abrams and Lee Maiden, many observers´ favourites, looked far from that as they succumbed to a pretty good show from Mike Smith and Del Lister. The latter nailed the first on D16 after 121s from each player, Maiden also securing a 121. Abrams recorded his only ton in the second leg, Smith 85, 100, Lister 120 and D7 for a 2-0 score line. Another pair of Kats followed in the shape of Alex Nikolov and Paul Durrant, the former taking the first on D20 after a ton. Opponents Peter Ayres 140 and Brian Nash D12 making it all square. A mundane match livened up in the third, Durrant 85, 122 and Ayres 85 and a tasty 138 to leave 40 gave the match a real edge. Nikolov left 36 which Durrant missed leaving Nash to use one dart for D20 and victory. Newcomers to the league Matt Jackson and Debbie Metcalfe (Porter House) acquitted themselves well, the former 81 and 118, Metcalfe a nice 140 against the Breakaways duo of Ivan Jones and Mike Snow. Whilst doubles eluded the Porters pair, that wasn’t the case for Jones 100,D10 and Snow 140 and D8 for the game. Smith and Lister figured next to take on Alan Preston and Chris Miles. Lister´s 103 out (S5,T19,D20) made it 1-0, followed by a ton from Smith and then a 121 from Lister plus D2 for the match. Ayres and Nash seemed to have the better of Jones and Snow in the next game, Nash taking out D20 after 3x80+ scores. An 81 and 125 from Ayres looked good enough to win, but Jones recorded an 85 and 105 to give Snow the opportunity of taking out D15 to level. A ton from Ayres and a 140 from Nash gave the Porters a massive lead which they failed to convert into a double. Snow took his advantage to hit D8 for 1-2. The winners now played the Breakaways pair for a finals night place. Jones won the bull, the pair kicking off with 4 80+ scores, Smith replying with a 98 and a tasty 129 to leave partner Lister the simple task of taking out S5,D20 for the lead. Snowy bust 114 in the second leg allowing Smith to finish D5 for 2-0. Meerkat captain and league vice chairman Del Kingsbury partnered Graham Todd this term easing their way through two rounds before facing the Busters duo of Paul Dowington and Peter O´Rourke. A comfortable 2-0 victory over Kay and Brian Hobbis was followed by overhauling Gilly and Terry Kirby 2-1. Gilly did all the work in the first leg, not only hitting the scores but D16 as well. Kingsbury livened up with 95,100,100 plus D8 and D10 for a place in the Porter House final. Dowington and O´Rourke suffered some double trouble but came from behind to take out Jon Peters and Jak Doggatt, the latter taking the first on D2 and then opening with 136 in the second. Dowington´s

response was emphatic 80,81,95,92 for O´Rourke to level on D4. Peters opened up his shoulders in the decider with 81,121, however Dowington was his equal to set up O´Rourke to complete the match on D2. Their next opponents, Alan Ostrowski and Danas Bobinas played better than the 0-2 score line suggests both hitting numerous 80+ scores. However all players suffered with double trouble, culminating in the Busters team finding D1 twice for victory. Kingsbury and Todd failed to capitalise with the throw in the first of the final, Dowington 100 taking out D18. A 95,140 and D4 from Kingsbury levelled the match, the Kats captain now in his stride recording 95,81,95 in the decider. O´Rourke´s 81 and ton just enough to gain first poke at the double, resulting in D9 for 2-1. Brett Badlove and Stuart Clark came through the Breakaways venue without dropping a leg, both players sharing scoring and double responsibilities. Their first opponents Sonya Cooper and Leah Chesworth put up a good fight, Chesworth recording 81, 140, Cooper 95,100, but the Que Pasa licensee Badlove took the first and opened with 125 in the second for Clark to finish the game on D8. The victors faced Sid Cross and Yvonne Rouffignac in the semi who had earlier despatched George and Taylor Caine 2-0, the Porters sharing the doubles, Cross managing 81,81,81,100. Cross however had trouble in maintaining his form, Rouffignac doing a little better, but not enough as the Eagles converted some great scoring into winning doubles. Meanwhile Tracey Simpson and Simone de Lacy had disposed of Karl Mallinson and Tony Woods 2-1, de Lacy finding both doubles. Woods taking the middle leg on D16. Their next opponents proved tougher Karl Cooper and John Ashworth. The former finished D16 to go 1 up, de Lacy 138, 85, 82 and D3 for D19 then D16 to level plus D5 for the match. The Jaguars couldn’t repeat their semi final efforts and went down 2-0, Clark taking out both doubles D16, D8 plus a ton and 3x80+ scores. Triples KO this week at Que Pasa, Busters, Ale House and Sporting Life, no predictions this week but four great teams will certainly triumph. FINISHING SCHOOL Question: How do you finish 103 Answer: I always tell players to go for their regular T20 on a ton plus out as they are more likely to hit T20 than for example T17. However in this case a miss into S1 leaving 102 means you cannot finish in two darts. Therefore T19 is recommended first dart as a miss means you can still finish in two. Question: Should you ever consider a two double finish with two darts in your hand?

SAN JAVIER GOLF SOCIETY AT LA SERENA GS

(Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. Around and about the Golf Courses – Font Del Llop Nestling in a high sided valley close to the town of Aspe is a wonderful golf course called Font del Llop, which literally translated from ‘old’ Spanish means Wolf’s watering hole. The clubhouse is a wonderfully restored building which used to belong to the land owner and his family and incorporates the proshop, locker rooms, conference rooms, restaurant and a crèche. The complex has good practise facilities with a driving range, chipping green and putting green. This course was designed by Blake Stirling and Marco Martin includes five par 5’s and five par 3’s and measures 5,814 metres (6,395 yards) off the yellow tees and 4,800 metres (5,280 yards) from the ladies red tees. The course blends naturally into the local scenery and the main feature of the course is a small river (formerly used in beer production) which runs through the course and which inter-links five ponds positioned to catch any errant shots. Although not overly long by modern standards this course has to be handled and managed well by all standards of golfer. The back nine holes the course finishes rather uniquely with a sequence of par 5, par 3, par 3 and finally par 5 with the final hole somewhat summarising all that you have seen over the previous 17 holes and i would strongly advise that whether you are a tourist or a resident you simply must add this course to your playing schedule. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. Also on the day we had a 2 ball better ball prize to go along with this

and the winning pair where Christine Flanagan and Paul Hamlin who came out on top with a score of 46pts with Lyn Gallard and Frank Murphy coming second on 44pts. everyone have a great day out and well played to you all some good scoring o the day The next Society's game will be on Wednesday, 18th MARCH 2015 at Hacienda RIQUELME. LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY By Mike Chapman It was the second round of our 5 Card Eclectic Joker Stableford competition on Monday which was played in glorious conditions and this was reflected in the scores being returned at the end of the round with the top 3 all achieving 40 pts or more. The winners on the day were as follows: 1st Terry Field 41 pts 2nd Ulrike Barth 40 pts (c/b) 3rd Alan Douglas 40 pts The scores have now been compared against those on individual holes in the first round and the best entered into the individuals 'Master Card' to arrive at their total so far for the competition. Leading the way is last years winner Rod Doel on 50 pts with Mike Chapman in second on 49 pts and Terry Field third on 48 pts. It was an eerie start to our Pairs Trophy competition on Wednesday with foggy conditions making early visibility difficult but it soon cleared and bright sunny conditions were the order of the day. It was the Lady/Gent combinations that faired best taking the top three places with the winners (pictured above) being Lindsay Forbes and Maria Oldenziel scoring an excellent 44 pts. In second place were Barry Holtham and Ulrike Barth on 43 pts with third place going to Donna Campbell and Terry Field with 41 pts. Terry had a particularly good day as he and Brian Townend shared the 2's Club rollover pot. On Friday several of our members were representing us in the Vega Baja League the result of which will be included in next weeks report. The remainder played a Dusty Bin (3-2-1) at Las Ramblas which was won with a very good score of 84 pts by the team of Lindsay Forbes, Barry Holtham, Alan Douglas and 'Albert'.

TMGS AT CAMPOAMOR GOLF COURSE With a midday tee time we missed the “fog” of the early morning and enjoyed a bright and for once a windless afternoon. The format of the day was the penultimate round of the “Medal Trophy” competition for our Gold Category Players, and a normal Stableford for the Silver and visitors Categories. The course is in good condition and with the greens being recently treated (made them play a little slower) one might have expected the scores to be high, in fact of the 30 plus competitors only 2 managed to break par although 2 members did manage to share the “2’s” pot. Kjell Aasebo and Hermis Woerdemann made 2’s on the 4th and 15th respectively sharing the €60 being rolled over from last week. The NTP’S went to: Hole 4 Gold, Kjell Aasebo, Hole 10: any player J. Rorison, Hole 15: Hermis Woerdemann, Hole 17: Ove In the visitors category, Ove took second place with 30 points while Gun Handeland (Mrs.) secured 1st place for the 2nd week running, Silver category winners were: 4th Alex Goslan 31 pts., 3rd Jim Hagan 32 pts. 2nd John Hillier 34 pts. And 1st was Colin Marsden with 35 points. Gold category results: 4th place. Gunnel Thunstrom net 74, Norbert Spaniol net 74, and Joe Dean 74 all being decided by lowest handicap. The winner with a very respectable net 69 was Kjell Aasebo. Photo: Gold category winners
