The councillor says that the service has only recently becaome available thanks to a collaboration with the Elche Acoge Foundation. Ortiz added that it was previously lacking but now "I am proud of the efforts that we have made within the council and from the consistory to reach this stage where everything has now been agreed in a very satisfactory manner. The idea is to offer comprehensive, diverse and complete care in both the Community Social Center (C / Espoz and Mina, 55) and in the Municipal offices in Gran Alacant. Dimas Vega, who is a social worker with Elche Acoge, said that there are two specific areas to the new agreement. The first is with regard to social and health care, problems in not being able to access health cards, education for children and so on while the second area will concentrate on integration within the community in Santa Pola and Gran Alacant. According to the latest report

conducted by the Bureau of Statistics at the Santa Pola Council, there are almost 7,000 immigrants living in the town from a total population of 34,000. They comprise of 90 different nationalities including the United Kingdom, Norway, Colombia and China. The councillor emphasised, however, that is unofficial data that is yet to be verified by the National Statistics Institute (INE). So the immigrant population accounts for more than 20% of the total number of residents living in the municipality. That is why various arrangements are being made and and events are being organised to help them better integrate. Dimas Vega has announced that in May he wants to make a photographic exhibition and in July the fair of equality, with the idea of ??transmitting the different nationalities of Santa Pola. Also, on December 18, the immigrant fair will be held coinciding with the International Migrants Day, where several activities will be done. Of course the main problem faced by a migrant is the language barrier. Dimas Vega says that this complicates everyday tasks such as looking for

employment or talking to a doctor. In addition, there are vast differences amongst the immigrants with regard to their economic situations. The majority of those who live in Gran Alacant are educated and reasonably well off whilst in many settlements in Santa Pola the immigrants are living in much more precarious conditions. Samuel Ortiz said that as a councillor he deplores many of the bureaucratic obstacles that exist in Spain. This new service, he added, will help overcome those many of those barriers that immigrants have to encounter. "These people are also citizens of Santa Pola and they should feel as such. This will be the purpose of this new public service. " With this new service it is wanted to provide additional and much needed facilities to all the immigrants who live in Santa Pola information of which can be obtained by telephone as follows: 966 69 6208 (Oficina AMICS ), 966 69 4200 (Civic Center) and 966 69 6050 (Gran Alacant). CELEBRATIONS ON THE ORIHUELA COSTA Whilst FAOC were critical of the unfair distribution of the Festivities budget they were largely complimentary toward the state of the Costa’s beaches, as they welcomed Easter visitors - Photo FAOC

T

he Board of Directors of the FAOC (The Federación de Asociaciones de Orihuela Costa) has written another strongly worded document to the Orihuela Mayor Emilio Bascuñana in which they state that residents of the coast are being largely ignored when the Ayuntamiento plans leisure activities and festivals. Whilst they applaud the celebrations enjoyed last week by the city of Orihuela with their commemoration of Easter, which they say truly observes the important historical and cultural heritage of the municipality, they also state that the lack of such commemorations on the Orihuela Costa seriously reflects the discriminatory treatment that coastal residents receive. In supporting their complaint the FAOC note that from the budget allocated to Festivals and Festivities of 1,222,985.53 euros, over 900,000 euros has been spent in the city on the Medieval Market, Carnival, Holy Week, Moors and Christians Reconquista, Migo Christmas application, Three Kings Cavalcade and Christmas, leaving little more than 200,000 euros for the Orihuela Costa and the Pedenias. The FAOC denounced this situation to the City Council, as this distribution of expenditure, between the city, districts and the coast, yields a ratio per inhabitant which is very unfavourable for the more than 30,000 residents of the coast, who believe that they too have a right to enjoy their own festivities and events. The Association were a little more complimentary, however, about the efforts put in by Councillor Luisa Bone and her team with regard to the clean-up and repair of the beaches in readiness for the arrival of Easter holiday visitors.

On Saturday evening the FAOC issued an internal memorandum to their members in which they stated that representatives had visited 7 of the 11 Orihuela Costa beaches at which they assessed up to 6,000 holidaymakers enjoying the temperatures and the fine holiday weather. They said that the state of the beaches on the Orihuela Costa is satisfactory, as a result of the recent cleaning, the correct operation of the footbaths, the collection of waste, the newly opened access to La Glea and the collection of algae, except of the small beach at Aguamarina. The memorandum said “We believe that the Department of Beaches has done a good job of recovering the state of the beaches, after repeated severe weather in recent past months, and we expect that, in the next two months, the council maintains its level of service to complete the remaining work necessary to improve the Beach furniture, the repair of walls, improvement and access to some beaches as well as other necessary works.” Meanwhile, if you have a grievance about the state of things on the Orihuela Costa, why not follow the example of the FAOC and go direct to the mayor himself. Perhaps then, when he sees the weight of complaints emanating from those residents who actually live on the coast, he might start considering our situation a little more seriously. Email the mayor direct at: alcaldia@orihuela.es

Torrevieja PP demand greater police presence Torrevieja’s PP Councillor Agustina Esteve (PP) said last week that there has been a deterioration both in general security and the management of traffic in the city since José Manuel Dolón assumed leadership of the council two years ago." She said that the local government had a duty to provide a quality of service that best fits the needs of the municipality, which includes a police presence that is adequate for the protection of Torrevieja’s residents. “Unfortunately, in my opinion, we have seen how these services have gradually deteriorated from our streets, our beaches, and even schools," she stated. She reminded the gathered press of last year’s

complaints from businesses, traders and residents and of the motion that was presented for an "adoption of measures to increase security in those areas where there was a large footfall of people, such as in commercial and trading centres as well as many town centre streets, markets and of course the beaches. The councillor said that according to her information, last year, on some days during the months of July and August "there were only three local police officers on duty at night, which in an area as important as safety and traffic, was completely unacceptable in a city the size of Torrevieja,”

Booksellers resist online sales The popular Torrevieja bookfair is once again attracting visitors along the Paseo Vista Alegre seafront and will continue to do so until next Monday 24 April. The current fair is the 21st such occasion with stalls opening at 11am each day and closing at 11pm at night. They will, however, close for siesta during that period from 2-6pm. With many of the stallholders speaking English, and with the books available in a number of languages, visitors are usually assured of finding the book of their choice. As well as bookstalls occupied by local traders there are also kiosks from as far afield as Lorca in the south and Altea in the north. One trader from Torrevieja said that the great advantage of buying from a bookstall or a bookshop, and not over the internet, is that you receive a personal service, there is contact between the seller and the buyer and the customer is more likely to get exactly what he wants. On the first weekend of opening the best-selling books were, "The Little Prince", "The Diary of Anne Frank" and "Fifty shades of Grey."

LA FLORIDA ASSOCIATION JOINS WITH FAOC The Association of LA FLORIDA Residents became the latest neighbourhood group to add to the weight of FAOC, the Federación de Asociaciones de Orihuela Costa, when it completed its constitutional process last week, establishing it as a statutory association. The new La Florida assembly will strengthen the associative fabric of the Orihuela Costa and will now be eligible to join in with the organisation of the new District Boards. Its organisers, Ana Suárez and José Manuel González, have wide experience in the management of neighbourhood groups through their membership of the organisation ANPAS. Their integration into FAOC moves the Association a step closer to their goal of establishing a nucleus of 10 associations, as it continues to fight for a ‘fair deal’ for the residents of the Orihuela Costa in terms of the coastal infrastructure, its facilities and its necessary services which have long been ignored by the local government.

Babilonia residents bale out government

Ministry of Environment, claimed that it lacked the budget to undertake the work and urged the residents to carry it out themselves.

The owners of the 108 remaining homes confirmed last week that they will pay the 800,000 euros that it will cost to rebuild the footpath and breakwater and that they will then attempt to reclaim the money from the Ministry.

"We are not rich people here, some will find it easy to pay, but for others it will be very difficult."

he residents of Babilonia beach in Guardamar del Segura have said that they will assume the cost of repairs to the damaged walkway separating their homes from the beach that was destroyed during the heavy storms in December.

Although a court ordered the Coastal Territorial Service of Alicante to "immediately take the necessary measures to consolidate the walkway and existing houses" last February, the Directorate General for Sustainability of the Coast, under the

Each of the 108 families will now have to pay a sum of between 6,000 and 7,000 euros, which Babylonian Association Secretary, Manuel López, says will force some neighbors to seek a loan.

The project commissioned by the owners includes improvements that didn’t previous exist such as disabled access to the beach. What will be reinstated is the 2 metre wide footpath which will also reinforce the breakwater so that the force of the sea does not bring it down again. The work includes an aesthetic improvement of steel. "We plan to start the works as soon as possible but first we have to inform the court of our decision and ask for the appropriate permits,” said López.

Pastor Keith reaches out to Zimpeto Church Mission Donations on the money tree amounted to 2350 euro

K

eith Brown, the pastor of La Siesta Evangelical Church celebrated his 70th birthday last Wednesday afternoon amongst very nearly 100 family and friends at the Sunrise Restaurant in La Mosca, Playa Flamenca.

Tracey has spent over 15 years at the Zimpeto Mission

to widespread drought in recent months.

In treating his guests to a wonderful lunch with wine, Keith asked that, rather than bring along a present, each invitee make a donation to the Church Mission in Zimpeto, Mozambique, which is sponsored by the church and where Tracey Williams is one of the leading lights. He explained that Tracey is responsible for approximately 50 toddlers and babies at the centre, which caters for about 300 children, who are either orphans or whose parent's can no longer care for them. Tracey very generously helps to fund her work from her own pocket, and has been doing so for over 15 years. Unfortunately her funds have rather dried up in recent weeks, in much the same way as the local borehole, and she is at a loss as to how she can continue in the immediate future. Keith Brown spoke about the hardships faced by Tracey in Mozambique on a daily basis

Tracey's work is also made more difficult by the uncertain political situation in Mozambique and the vagaries of the weather which has led

Quite how much the gesture would provide was an unknown quantity but when Keith and wife Cathy dismantled the money tree and tallied up the donations they found that they had raised the amazing sum of 2,350.00 euros. This money, which will help to alleviate the centre’s immediate needs, will now be despatched to Tracey at the Zimpeto home, allowing her a little additional security in the coming weeks. La Siesta Evangelical Church continues to support Tracey with prayers as well as financially. Please do keep her, the children and her colleagues, at the centre in your prayers. Should you wish to donate to this extremely worthwhile cause please email Keith for more information at: pastorlasiesta@gmail.com And of course a very happy birthday to Pastor Keith who’s gesture will no doubt soon be putting a very broad smile on the faces of a lot of very young Mozambicans.

Creatures of Habit! By Jonathan Gilchrist Costa Blanca's Top Hypnotherapist

I

t's often said that human beings are creatures of habit. Even if we know that a habit is bad for us, such as smoking, and against all the good advice we are given, we still continue to do it anyway. Most people know that by quitting smoking they will save thousands of pounds over the year as well as adding years to their life. So, why do people continue to smoke even after all the warnings from their doctors and advertising campaigns ? Cigarettes find their way into everyday life,

becoming a part of so many activities. Habits are formed, creating associations to things like food and alcohol, or even driving a car - it seems to become a part of them. Perhaps more importantly cigarettes become, for most people part of a coping mechanism to try to deal with emotional pressures like stress or boredom. When a smoker becomes upset, he or she reaches for the cigarette to try and feel better. Cigarette smoking is a habit and there may be specific occasions with which people associate smoking. Some wake up in the morning and the first thing they do is reach for a cigarette. while others use smoking to reduce stress - they say it relaxes them. The truth is cigarettes are a false friend that can and will eventually kill them ! Within my experience in dealing with people's

smoking issues I have found the answer to be the same in all kinds of addictions and unwanted habits...FEAR. Fear that they will have to give up their crutch or pleasure Fear that they won't be able to enjoy life or deal with stress. Fear that they will put on weight when giving up. Fear that they will never be completely free of the craving All of these fears are just examples of one overriding fear that when the smoker tries to stop using other methods, they suffer misery and depression caused by the feeling that they are being deprived of a pleasure or a crutch. The beauty of Fast Track Hypnosis and Laser Therapy put together in this unique combination removes this feeling of deprivation. It removes the need, and the urge to smoke. By combining these together it helps to increase the already high success rate using hypnosis on it's own, and all this is achieved in less than 30 minutes. There is no need for useless aids, gimmicks, or substitutes, No nicotine gum or patches, No inhalers or nasal sprays. It doesn't get much easier than that! "Hypnosis is the most effective way of giving up smoking, according to the largest ever scientific comparison of ways of breaking the habit. Willpower, it turns out, counts for very little". (New Scientist, Vol 136 issue 1845 31Oct 92, pg 6).Results included 48 studies of hypnosis covering 6000 smokers, were published in the Journal of Applied Psychology which clearly showed that hypnosis was three times more effective than nicotine replacement therapy By using the unique method of Fast Track Hypnosis & Laser Therapy the already high success rate can be increased even more to quit permanently, and this is completed in a simple 30 minute session - WITH GUARANTEE! The Fast Track Hypnosis session targets the unconscious part of the mind that drives certain unwanted behaviours and urges. This in turn helps you to overcome everything that gets in the way to accomplishing your goal of finally quitting smoking. Imagine how you would feel when you have finally quit smoking. Imagine hearing all of the compliments from people around you because you have stopped smoking and you look healthy – plus your breath smells better and your wallet or purse has more money in it.

Pity Mark Twain did not know about Fast Track Hypnosis ! You can make this a reality in ONE simple 30 minute session.! You may have tried stopping by yourself for weeks or even months, but then something stressful came up and you started to smoke again. You may have tried the gum then started smoking again. You may have tried the patch, took it off, had a cigarette, then put it back on again ! So the question is‌ARE YOU READY TO FINALLY STOP SMOKING? It the answer is YES then what are you waiting for? Put down that cigarette and call NOW "Giving up smoking is the easiest thing in the world. I know because I've done it thousands of times." - Mark Twain

Following a car accident Sandra needed to undergo a course of rehabilitation. To help her with this she took up cycling. Liking it so much she has now decided to cycle from Vietnam to Cambodia to raise funds for a Kidney Association. The actual journey will involve riding her bike for 500 km over a period of 7 days and riding 7 hours a day!! Will this be along a Motorway I naively asked her. Not on your life. She will be travelling along rice fields, big towns and little villages, sometimes riding on dirt tracks and staying in local accommodation such as Hostels etc. She has already done a couple of trips from San Miguel to Cartagena in preparation, but her biggest challenge will be the Asian humidity. The trip is being organised from the UK and several other bikers will be with her raising funds for various organisations. Sandra has a target of £3000 to raise on her selffunded trip. ‘Letters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

Even More Ashamed to be British

A

pril Fool’s week has been an interesting one for dedicated expats living in Europe. Firstly, we had all the fun, games and drama surrounding THAT letter written by the Prime Minister, delivered by a grinning, bearded Cheshire Cat of a diplomat clutching a smart, new briefcase, to poor Mr Tusk representing the European Commission. Am I the only one wondering why Teresa May didn't simply send an email, or that all time Spanish favourite, the Blessed Fax instead? No, we had to have quill and ink and probably a seal, possibly written on vellum. I know the Brits are into tradition in a big way, but this was all really rather silly, wasn't it? All these festivities were accompanied by the banshee calls of Brexiters shrilly proclaiming their usual cries of jubilation, “We won, get over it!” No, I think not. We then had all that Gibraltar nonsense and the threat made by an elderly ex-leader of the Tory Party, suggesting the possibility of war with Spain. Really? Now that makes huge sense considering that both the UK and Spain are joint, loyal members of NATO, and usually the best of friends. Still, the fact that he was rather quickly demoted to ‘ex-leader of the Tory Party' should tell us all rather a lot about his dubious diplomatic skills, as well as his mental stability. May I kindly suggest that he would be far better off sucking wine gums in a home for the elderly rather than trotting around TV studios spreading his message of hate about our friends and neighbours? Maybe the House of Lords, which is the UK's most expensive

retirement home, is the more appropriate place for him after all? I mustn't forget the mind-blowing revelation of the British plan to blow up the Channel Tunnel with a nuclear bomb, if the neighbours don't play nicely, which also popped up in the UK press this week. Nice one guys, but maybe it could cause a bit of a problem for the good people living in Dover who, I suspect, would not be too keen on the idea, since it could blow a significant part of the south coast to pieces. After all, nuclear bombs do tend to create a bit of a mess, which could be awkward since the UK relies on the French for quite a lot of electricity nowadays. The fact that it was ever even considered as a disruption tactic many years ago should tell us a great deal about the British anti-European psyche. Fortunately, both the Spanish and French have a good sense of humour and none of this abuse appears to have been taken too seriously. “Calm down, dears”, was the predictable response from the Spanish - sensible people. The crowning glory in the British press this week was that brain numbing headline in the Sun proudly proclaiming "Up Yours Senors!" (which should really be Señors, but maybe I am being a tad pedantic) that encapsulated the Sun's thoughtful message to Spain and the European Union, together with the less well-considered sub heading of "Our Message to the Meddling Leaders of Spain and the

By Bar rie Mahoney EU". Unfortunately, the message was rather lost alongside advertisements for holidays in the sun, (let’s all have holidays in Blackpool and not Benidorm nowadays, folks) but the thought was there, however inarticulately expressed. On a more serious note, I am more or less old enough to remember the protestation of France's then President Charles de Gaulle who was horrified about the possibility of the United Kingdom joining the European project. "Non, non, non" was his entirely reasonable response to Britain's applications to join. Of course, he was right; he knew only too well then, which many thinking expats have known for many years, that Britain was never suited to joining the EU in the first place. The British island mentality, with its mistaken nostalgia for a past, and not particularly glorious, Empire still haunts the British psyche today. "Be careful what you wish for" is an expression that I have been continually reminded of since the referendum, and which seemed even more relevant this week. I don't think I have ever been quite so ashamed to be British as I have been this week, and I look longingly at those who are blessed to have Irish, Spanish, German or Swedish passports. Looking back, many of the issues that are currently surfacing have been simmering for many years. On a more positive note, despite the dire warnings of fervent Brexiters who are willing the EU to collapse, I firmly believe that the EU will become even more united and stronger without the UK in the years ahead; I certainly hope so. Meanwhile, I have been tempted to join a number of organisations on Facebook this week. Although I agree with one called 'Campaign for a Fair Deal', I am forced to admit that this view remains beyond my understanding, or my willingness to submit to. Personally, I am still grieving and not yet ready for any kind of deal outside Europe, let alone a fair one. Still, I'll keep taking the pills and maybe one day I'll get over it. Meanwhile, if there any good Europeans out there, who would like to adopt quite a few disillusioned Brits, please let me know. The Hub Hyenas 7 v The Junction Jackals 5 With only two matches of the regular season remaining this meeting of first against second was going to be crucial – not only for the teams involved but also for the chances of anyone else challenging for the title. As it turned out The Hyenas secured a fine win, two points and with it the title of League winners. The match itself was a fantastic advert for local darts with some superb scoring and equally adept, quick finishing. The second treble was a very good example – the Hub in the shape of John Eyre, Joe Miller and Nick Spicer started the game with a couple of paltry 60’s and an 85 – then Nick hit 180 followed in quick succession by 140’s from John and Joe. Double 10 from Nick and the leg was over with the away side still needing over 300. The evening continued in very much the same vein with Alex Nikolov, Andy Rutter and Lee Maiden playing some heavyweight darts to give The Jackals a 2 – 1 lead after the trebles. All the legs were going with the throw and Shaun Smith made a fine contribution for the Hub in the doubles with 100, 81 and 140 in consecutives turns. This left the score at 3 each at the interval – all to play for.

By Simone de Lacy Massey’s and they will be playing it at Las Rosas. In the Auxiliary Cup KO, Porter House Bees are drawn to play the Porters so we chose the Porter House at is the home venue for both teams so no advantage. The 2nd match is between The Ale House and Las Rosas will be played at the Junction.

Alex scored heavily as well but Lee got home with double 8. Game over? - well not quite – The Jackals put up some stiff resistance - Lee maiden had a super win over captain Simon Williams with 3 tons and a double 6 finish and Andy Rutter beat Joe miller to leave the score at 6 – 5 to the Hyenas. However, John Eyre had the final word with a comfortable win to give the Hub Hyenas the last leg and their first league title. It was a match worthy of ‘the final’ with 27 scores of 100 or more, 7 140’s and a 180 for good measure. Congratulations to all at the Hub and well done to Captain Simon Williams –thanks for a great evening of darts played in the true spirit of the game and a drink on the house at the end- Cheers! San Luis Bowls Club - Winter League Champions

By Rod Edgerton

Wednesday 12th Winter League, home against Greenlands and the final chance to win points to reach the top of the league: and WE DID IT – CHAMPIONS for 2nd year running!!!! Greenlands team put up a very spirited fight, keeping some games very close but gradually we moved ahead and just held on for a total win 12-0, points 97-68. This meant we finished on 220 points, with Quesada 2nd on 217 points and Vistabella 3rd on 216 points. No Berleen match this week but overall our team finished mid-table; a creditable 5th, after a hard fought season. Well done to everyone who has contributed to San Luis’ success throughout the season, whether Berleen, main team, or both; it could only happen by people working together. Many thanks as well to all the supporters who’ve stuck with us through rain, snow, cold, wind, and sun. Today’s winners: Lynne Morris, Jo Pering, June & Keith Jones 22-13, Shirley Verity, Barry Edwards, Jules Pering, Russell Marks 18-11, Irene Everett, Steve Simmons, Roy Cordell, Tom Hill 18-17, Ann Holland, Keith Phillips, Sabrina Marks, Mal Hughes 23-13, Kath Reid, Sheila Cammack, Neil Morrison, Scott Malden 16-14. Spitfire Division: SL Wellingtons Thursday 13th away v LS Wasps; a good result, shots 122-68, 10pts-4. Winners: Carol Lowry, Les Bedford, Keith Lowry 24-8, Judy Carroll, Bill Webb, Mal Hughes 27-7, Kath Reid, June & Keith Jones 26-7, Colin Jackson, Keith Roberts, Phil Morrachan 14-10. Harrier Division: SL Hercules, home v ER Buckskins a tough match; 4-10, 80shots 123. Winners: Dennis Jackson, Tom Fromson, Sue Ross 23-12, Doug Beattie, Chris Jackson, Fay Beattie 22-19. The photo shows the majority of the winning team with the trophy. Champion of Champions Tournament runs Unfortunately some team members who have played during the league camfrom 17th – 22nd. First 2 days at San Luis paign are missing, or back in UK - but well done to all. & Greenlands, semis and finals at We are a very competitive but friendly club and Casa Ventura itself Greenlands, details on website. Good Luck to everyone involved. Obviously San Luis players have achieved some excellent results is a hub for the local area, offering a wide range of non-bowling and we wish to continue this. We are currently looking for new activities. members to join us for the 2017/18 winter season. Captain: 691 903 773.

A convincing win for the Hornets by 122-90 shots gaining a 10-4 victory saw the Hornets triumphing at Country Bowls and taking them to the top of the table at this early stage of the season. This shows encouraging signs for the squad in the remainder of the season in the Harrier Division. The winning rinks for the Hornets were achieved by Jean James, Alan Ralph and Johnnie Ryder by 30-11, Hilary Clarke, Trish Reilly and Vic Mahomet 26-8 whilst Joe Kocsis, Sue Mahomet and Rab Logan won 26-11.Finally, Ken Stringfellow, Tom Heaslewood and Jack Burrell completed the winning rinks with a 21-15 victory. Not such a good day for the Wasps in the Spitfire Division who found their visiting opponents San Luis Wellingtons on good form which lead to a 10-4 defeat for La Siesta. The overall shots score being 68 to 122. Wins for the Wasps were gained by Dave Davies with Florence and Mike Edwards by 16 shots to 13 whilst Dawn and John Taylor with Harold Charleton won by 20 shot to 18.

El Rancho Bowls Club Our one league match, for the Buckskins, was played on Thursday at San Luis against the Hercules and what a splendid day it was. Starting with a heavy due caused the mat to be running fast, but as the mat dried it became slower, with the width changing from time to time, it proved tricky finding line and length. But we had a good morning’s bowls and we were in great company, far more important than the result. As it happens the result was also splendid for an away game against good opposition. Winter League. Well it just wasn't to be, we fought hard, we had some fantastic results, we even sat at the top of the league a couple of times, we experienced highs and lows but at the end of the day we have had to settle for third place behind San Luis and Quesada. The final game was at San Miguel where the team played a very close game but ended with a disappointing result, we needed ten points to win the league but only got four! Well done to Beryl Regan, Charlie Watkins, Carol Thorpe & Bill Pain 16-12 and Sandra Burrows, Barbara Brown, Mike Regan & Gary Thorpe 16-12. VB 75(4) - 77(8) SM. SM won the Berleen. Another chance next year...bring it on! Spitfire League. The Fairways were at home v Quesada Blenheims, three wins apiece with one being decided on an exciting last end. The long game was very tight but went to the home team. Jenny Bowman, Charlie Watkins & Mike Regan 22-12. Lin Watkins, Sandra Burrows & Maggie Furness 18-12 and Tony French, Dane Howard & Eric Bishop 22-18. Shots, VB 97(8) - 75(6) Q. The Greeners had a bye. Last weekend we welcomed a touring team from Antrim, a very enjoyable friendly morning's bowling with a good result in Vistabella's favour, those playing and winning the trophy were...P Ray, K Savage, B Brown & D Jenkins 28-11; P Rafferty, B Regan, C Thorpe & J Harwood 28-7; R Savage, M Irwin, M Regan & G Thorpe 17-11 and D Harwood, B Ray, A Brown & P Rafferty 20-14. Good luck to all of our representatives in the Champion of Champions this coming week, go along and show your support. SOUTH ALICANTE SUMMER TRIPLES RESULTS AND TABLES / WEEK 2 - 13 APRIL SPITFIRE DIVISION

Monte eye Racing San Miguel as they close in on promotion Los Montesinos football team CD Montesinos are focussed on promotion as the Alicante based club's long awaited celebrations are within touching distance - leading the 2nd Regional Grupo 16 of the Valencian League - with the mouthwatering fixtures against Racing San Miguel CF beckoning once again next season. Away from the Premier League and La Liga millionaire 21st century circus, football at grass roots level will hopefully be coming home, for the plethora of CD Montesinos die-hard fans, with the 'Full Monte' Supporters Club members. Over 500 fans packed into The Campo Municipal Stadium ahead of the Easter break, when CD Montesinos defeated CFP Orihuela 5-0, to remain top of the 2nd Regional Grupo 16. Carlos Perez, who took over as coach, just two games into the 2016-17 season, has seen his team defeated just once since he was appointed at the helm in October. Proud Carlos was in the dug-out in front of CD Montesinos's biggest ever crowd of 554 spectators on April 9, watching the 5-0 win against Grupo Caliche. And praise was aimed at the faithful CD Montesinos fans following their overwhelming support this season: "It has been fantastic what the fans have done for us. The fans mean so much to the players and club," said Carlos. CD Montesinos have two games remaining, to clinch the Championship title, with an away fixture against Dep. Orihuela CF 'A' on April 23 - and a home fixture against Grupo Caliche on April 30. CD Montesinos' fate is in their own hands. Victories against Dep. Orihuela CF 'A' and Grupo Caliche will see the Vega Baja club

Spicing up Plaza’s day out at Vistabella What a great day at Vistabella with some sizzling scores and some rather freezing scores coming in. With 3 nearest the pins, hole 4 was won by Spicer, hole 8 Kevin Rose, Hole 15 Gary Gates, hole 11 we had

nearest in 2 and Spicer won. All collecting a 10€ bar tab for the Alehouse. The 2’s pot was one by Spicer winning the 52€ pot. Our guest category was won by Steve Young and 2nd was Paul Malin, collecting

wine and balls. Our best lady was Linda Ottway with 25 points and our lowest place was Rick Cooper with 14 points both receiving a bottle of wine. Our members saw some fantastic scores with Neil Cheesecake coming in 3rd with an impressive 33 points, Steve Higgins with a magnificent 36 points claiming 2nd and with Spicer finally finding his form and scoring a sizzling 42 points claimed top spot. Thanks for all attending. With our next game being at Mar Menor and also the last game of our year the order of merit is hotting up. With 1st and 2nd place already sorted places 3 to 8 are open to anyone. So you all need to bring your best game!!! Wolfpack Captain takes John Woodey Trophy Members and guests of The Wolfpack Golf Society descended upon Campoamor on April 11th to play for the annual John Woodey Trophy. The defending champion, Gary Edwards, was not present due to his continued recovery from shoulder surgery - so many were looking to put a new name on the cup. It was good to see some familiar faces on the first tee - especially Ted Harris back again after his knee replacement operation. Ron Colclough was making his Society Day debut. Scores on the front nine were generally high with returns of 17, two 18s a 19 and a fabulous 21 by Ricky Gibson to take the front nine prize. As often happens to many of us, Ricky’s lucked faded, or his skill waned and his back nine was not quite so impressive. Dave Pope had two four pointers in his front nine score and was going well. The nearest the pin prize on the 6th went to “new knee Ted” clearly the surgery was a success ! The back nine always seems slightly harder at Campoamor, not helped by some tricky pin positions, but still there were some impressive scores. Graham Moore took the back nine prize but was pipped to first place by Captain Steve Lugger with his score of 18, aggregating 33 for the day. Graham took second place with Peter Palmer finishing in third place, also with 18 on the back nine. Nearest the pin on the tricky 17th was Graham Moore. All in all a good days golf in lovely weather with a few beers back at The Royal Oak afterwards - this is what Society Days are all about. If you are interested in joining the Wolfpack, please contact either Steve on 604 11 27 29 or Dave on 677 147 848.

MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF (Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Svcs). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. ‘Natural Instincts’ Have you ever thought why you act the way that you do both in life and on the golf course? The answer is simple; it is your natural instincts, similar to pigeons being able to ‘home’ without being taught and sea turtles returning to the beach on which they ‘hatched’ despite the absence of the parents. Psychologists will tell you that we were all programmed to act via our genes following the actions and behaviour of our forefathers millions of years ago. These actions are today referred to as ‘fight or flight’ by the experts. Imagine the following situation from millions of years ago: You are a caveman hunter in the jungle and you hear the sound of rustling in the undergrowth. What do you do? If you remain still and prepared to ‘fight’ and the noise is a deer or a warthog, you and your family could eat very well that night. However, if the noise is a lion or tiger then you could become the hunted and the meal for the night. If on the other hand you decide to run (flight) you may well go hungry tonight but you will still be alive to hunt for food tomorrow. In all aspects of our lives today we will all make the’ fight or flight’ decisions when faced with difficult situations. How does this apply to golf I hear you say? Consider the following example of a golfing scenario: Playing a par 5 of less than 500 yards you have hit a good drive and have a 200 yard second shot to the green over water. What do you do? Those of you with the basic instinct to ‘fight’ will think that fortune favours the brave, take out a fairway wood and have lash at the green. However if you have the ‘flight’ mentality you will lay up short of the water hazard and try to get your birdie the conventional way whilst almost certainly ensuring that the par is safe. Why way of thinking is correct? The answer is both are correct providing that you have the confidence to play the shot that you have chosen and that you are playing within your abilities and capabilities. The only time that there is a ‘mental conflict’ is when an attack minded golfer plays the percentages or when a defensive golfer tries to attack the golf course. Remember that in pressure situations you should trust ‘your’ natural instincts because they have taken millions of years to develop. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. Off Salts Torry have it all to do but ref Lopez Larrosa thought otherwise, controversially waving play on. Calzado did his best to present the visitors the opening goal on 48 mins, giving away the ball to Nico, but once again the gods showed him mercy as the visitors striker shot wide with just keeper Jose Carlos to beat. The inevitable arrived on 54 mins, Fandos striking a superb 20 yard drive which looped over the head of Jose Carlos

M

ystery surrounded the absenteeism of Torry manager Pedreno, for this vital relegation battle at Nelson Mandela Stadium on Maundy Thursday. Having served a 2 match suspension, we all expected to see him back in the dugout, barking out instructions to his troops, but surprisingly he was nowhere in sight. His team were already bereft of skipper Javi Meca (a rock in defence who was sorely missed), and long serving full back Vicente, so to lose their highly inspirational manager was a blow they could have done without. Martin took over the captains armband and led by example, but alas javi and Vicente´s replacements weren´t up to the task. Time and time again this season, lack of discipline has cost Torry dearly, but will they ever learn - I don't think so!! Teams directly below them had mixed results, with Almoradi losing, Muro drawing, but Bunol won, meaning Torry are now 3 points from safety. It now boils down to whether they can earn enough points to secure survival from the 4 remaining games (2 away & 2 home), starting with a visit to Recambios Colon (who are only 5 points better off) next weekend.

As they don´t have strength in depth, this will surely depend on whether they can remain free of suspensions and injury to key players. It was the hosts who started with more urgency, as in the first 10 mins, Lewis twice had efforts which were way off target. Almazora showed they weren't here just for a point, as they looked a well organised unit, both up front and in defence, overlapping well during counter attacks. Fondos should have opened the scoring for them on 12 mins, his close range shot was screwed horribly wide, then midway through the half, Nico´s rasping drive from edge of the box slammed against the post. Torry´s defence were at sixes and sevens, none more so than when Calzado´s soft headed clearance fell to Ricardo, but luckily with the goal at his mercy, he blazed both high and wide. Pastor embarked on a threatening run on 38 mins, appearing to be brought down inside the penalty area,

and into the net. Twas nothing less than Almazora deserved, then from a corner 13 mins later, their captain Cifu headed wide at the near post from a corner. Nico was on fire, forcing Jose Carlos to make a good save, as Torry´s foul count rose dramatically, which saw Calzado join Pastor in the refs book. Sub Luis Carlos squandered a rare Torry attack, a glorious opportunity but his tame shot was easily saved by Ruben. Shortly afterwards, a Kana long range free kick just missed the target, as Torry were at last showing some urgency. On 84 min Lewis was guilty of missing another chance, then straight up the other end, a deep Ricardo free kick eluded the Torry defence, only for Nico to fire home at the far post. With time ticking away, Luis Carlos crossed from the right, but alas Lewis summed up Torry´s performance when he headed over from close range.

El Plantio 2 Golf Society An ideal entry of 16 members competed in 8 pairings for the re-scheduled 'Gruesome' competition on Tuesday 11th April. Much trepidation was apparent from some competitors as each pairing is at the mercy of the opposition as they can choose the worst situated drive i.e. a hole-in-one can count for nothing as the other pairing will ask for the second ball to be played. The competition turned out to be hugely enjoyable as much friendly banter passed between the pairings over which drive should be selected. Nearest the pins : Hole 2, Ian Craig - Hole 9, Lawrence Wanty. 3rd Place - Ian Craig, Penny Goujon - Average Handicap 12.68 - 66.32 shots. 2nd Place Ray Housley, George Stanhope Average Handicap 12.24 - 64.76 shots. 1st Place - David Swann, Michel Goujon, Average Handicap 10.80 - 62.20 shots.
