PSOE boss Carolina Gracia, who has the support of the three Cambiemos councillors. There are a further two seats that were won by Vox, although it is the five held by Ciudadanos (Cs),

that hold the balance of power. As such Bascuñana enters the current session in Orihuela as the leader of a minority government. Continued on Page 2

In his inaugural address, the mayor said that, after four years, in which he and his councillors have gained an awful lot of experience, they face this new challenge together with "renewed enthusiasm and with the commitment to continue governing with transparency". He has asked the remaining parties and their councillors, "with humility, to help and support me in order to live up to what Orihuela needs with dignity, loyalty and trust, all through honest work." Bascuñana told the party leaders that “the interests of Orihuela should be their priority."

Another of the disputed municipalities is Benejúzar where Rosa García (Cs) and Miguel López (PSOE) seem about to agree a pact where each will be mayor for two years while in Daya Nueva, Teresa Martinez, of Ciudadanos, has reached an agreement with the PSOE which will give her an absolute majority. The PSOE in San Fulgencio took to Facebook to officially announce that a formal agreement had been reached with the Ciudadanos to govern San Fulgencio and La Marina for the next four years, and where expats Samantha Hull and Darren Parmenter will both serve in the new government. It’s been 16 years since the PSOE were last in power in San Miguel de Salinas, with new mayor Juan de Dios Fresneda, saying his councillors must hit the ground running. In other medium-sized towns, the picture is much clearer. The PSOE retains their majority in Rojales Torrevieja

In the Torrevieja Municipal Chamber it was standing room only as Eduardo Dolón (PP) was re-elected to the office of mayor after an absence of 4 years. With a vastly increased majority, and the rather unexpected support of the leader of Ciudadanos, Pilar Gómez Magán, Dolón took possession of the symbolic staff of office from the leader of the opposition, Andres Navarro, promising that his government team will work tirelessly to resolve the problems of the town and of the residents," and not the other way around." “We will not disappoint you,” he promised. And under control of the PSOE with absolute majorities are the towns of Rafal, Dolores, Jacarilla, Benferri, Algorfa and Los Montesinos where José M. Butrón Sánchez has been the mayor since 1990.

Can a successful businessman become a good ma y or? In Pilar de la Horadada, José María Pérez says that failure is not an option!

ble decision of assuming council responsibilities for agriculture and water.

While disappointing election results see Torrevieja’s former mayor José Manuel Dolón leaving politics after 28 years, the outcome in the municipality of Pilar de la Horadada marks the arrival onto the political scene of one man who simply can’t wait to get going, José María Pérez, who led the Partido Popular in Pilar de la Horadada to a far more comfortable victory than many people expected, increasing their share of the votes from 7 to 11 councillors from a chamber of 21.

But what for the future, what are the new mayor’s immediate aims? Perez says “ the first thing I will do is to say thank you to all my friends and my supporters, to introduce myself to all of the council employees and to establish myself in my new office, then I intend to get up and running. I do not take up my new post as the boss, I come, along with my fellow councillors, to work for the people who elected me as mayor.”

According to the new mayor “We expected to edge to victory but the margin of our win was much better than anticipated and now, with a clear mandate from the people, we can pick up the reins that we inherit from Ignacio Ramos and take the municipality forward to a much better future.

“I will never criticise those who came before. Yes there are many things with which I don’t agree and which I will hope to change but Ramos has run the council in the best way he believed and his general management has been good, but there are many deficiencies and the electorate have now put me in a position to effect those changes which I intend to start working towards straight away.”

Prior to his move into politics Perez was a successful local businessman and the President of a number of local groups, including UD Horadada Football Club, but with his new responsibilities, although he will maintain an active interest in them all, any ‘hands on’ involvement will have to go. It will be a similar case with his successful farming and flower businesses, which will all be handed over to his children and his brother, however, as an expert in the field, he has already made the very sensi-

“For example, La Paloma. Residents are tired of seeing it in such a sorry state. For many years there has been no solution. I'm going to work to resolve it. Another priority is to solve the flooding problem in Los Villenas, Los Campillos and across the whole area in heavy rains.” “I also want to see us deal with the growing demand for our own hotel supply network, where currently, every time we send people to find accommodation in neighbouring municipalities, our own tourism sector suffers the loss.” “We should be able to accommodate them locally and thereby build on an even more successful industry than we currently have.” “But for me the biggest responsibility is not to fail. I do not like to fail or to be wrong so residents have my absolute promise that I will work to build a better future for them and for the municipality as a whole.”

Torrevieja canine beach put on hold by new council Eduardo Dolón (PP), the new mayor of Torrevieja, has announced that despite being promised in the electoral manifesto the new government team will first have to assess the proposed sites, Cala del Moro - Mal Paso and Punta Margalla. "We do not know the details of any agreement or the conditions that need to be met," he told the local press on Wednesday. Dolón was prudent, reminding the gathering of the controversy that has recently been generated about the proposal, and its rejection by many local residents. “But at the same time there is a lot of demand for bathers to be allowed to swim and relax on the beach with their animals.”

According the new new mayor "We need to know the details of any agreement and the conditions that have to be met,"

Just last February, in the case of Cala del Moro, there was a judicial resolution delivered by the Contentious Court in Elche, which gave permission for the beach to be used by animals, although it alluded to the fact that it was a provisional decision and that the final ruling must be reached through a popular consultation. At the time, both the residents of Punta Margalla and Cala del Moro, who protested against the implementation of the court decision, (which only affected part of the rocky beaches) had the support of the PP, who were in opposition at the time. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that the decision has now been delayed once again.

The current acting mayor, José Manuel Dolòn, and councillor Domingo Pérez Domingo Soler, welcomed the commander of the Mistral, Jorge Garrido Maestre, and the crew to the town hall, where gifts were exchanged before visiting the submarine which is located in the harbour. For some of the crew it was more of a welcome home, as they had previously served on the Delfin before it was decommissioned and donated to Torrevieja to be part of the Sea and Salt museum.

Councillor for Tourism, Sofía Álvarez, was joined by Víctor González, representative of Cycling Friendly, in revealing a new map showing the routes. The routes also have a QR code that provides even greater information and can be downloaded onto a mobile phone. "This is a commitment to cyclotourism and the improvement of Orihuela as a tourist destination," said Álvarez. It is a unique map, where each route is very different, but nevertheleass planned with safety in mind.

They include many that go through mountain passes, with information on their length, gradient average and location on the map, in addition to the main tourist attractions along each route. The routes will also be added to the website of Orihuela Turística, where a section of bicycle routes now appears and from which users will be able to download them to their GPS devices, also showing accommodation and cyclist services that are available in the municipality.

An agent of Orihuela’s Local Police carried out a dangerous maritime rescue on Thursday morning when he pulled an unconscious man from the sea who was being dragged out to sea by strong currents. The officers received a call from the Emergency Coordination Centre 112, saying that a man was unconscious on the water, that the waves were hitting him against the rocks and that he was in danger of being dragged out to sea by the strong currents. With no way of reaching the man by foot the officers drove to the Stella Maris Jet Ski rental office in Cabo Roig Marina and requested assistance. The company quickly made 2 jet skis available together with life jackets and their own rescue equipment and two staff members ferried one of the officers to the scene of the incident. Having fought against a dangerous swell the two craft managed to get close to the 21 year old man who was still in an unconscious state, also suffering from multiple traumas and a number of blood-

ied wounds. They managed to get him out of the water, loaded him onto one of the watercraft, and quickly transported him back to the marina in the port of Cabo Roig, where he was treated by a SAMU ambulance and moved to the Torrevieja Hospital. The young man’s father, who was accompanying his son at the time, said that they were trying to get down into the rocky beachfront area along the Cabo Roig cliff when strong waves hit them and dragged them both into the sea. The father was able to climb onto the rocks, but the son was knocked unconscious, after which he was buffeted against the rocks several times and dragged by the current. The father said he was absolutely helpless and could do nothing other than call the emergency services.

Orihuela buys Los Saladares Bronze Age site for 54,000 euros The Orihuela City Council has bought an area of Los Saladares, in the neighbourhood of Desamparados, where there is evidence of important archaeological remains, from the 9th century to the 4th centuries BC. The objective of the purchase is to once again open the area and resume the excavations. The plot, which was purchased at a cost of 54,490 euros, is located on the archaeological site of Los Saladares, the most important Bronze Age town that was previously occupied by Phoenicians, Greeks, Iberians and people of Argaric culture. It sits in a protected area and is classified as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC), a historical-artistic and archaeological site of national character, but despite its importance, and having strict protection in the Orihuela Urban Ordination Plan, it has been the object of multiple unauthorised breaches. The plot acquired by the City Council, of more than 10,000 square metres, was previously owned by a resident of Desamparados. The formal contract of sale will be carried out in a couple of weeks and, thereafter, the City Council as the new owner, will begin to condition the area. It is currently full of weeds and vegetation as well as lemon and orange trees, and once the clean-up has been

carried out visitors will be able to visit the archaeological site, formerly an important part of the city history. Councillor Rafael Almagro, spoke of his “satisfaction and pride that, finally, the old site of Los Saladares is municipal property, more than 40 years after it was first discovered.” The site was found by accident in 1968 by children who were playing football in the area. It was first excavated in the late 60s and early 70s of the last century by Oswaldo Arteaga and María Rosa Serna. The excavations found several houses as well as numerous objects, such as vessels, pottery, jars and glasses, which are now preserved in a number of different museums, including the Archaeological Museum of Orihuela (Marquo). Since then no excavation work has been carried out in the area, during which time it has become overgrown

and abandoned. Los Saladares is located on top of a hill from where you can see much of the Vega Baja, the fertile plain of Murcia and the city of Orihuela. The good visibility was the main reason why, for over 500 years, settlers continually occupied these lands. Being located near to the Segura river they are also very prosperous for the growing of crops and agriculture, in addition to which, it has a great biodiversity that made the area, at the foot of the Sierra de Hurchillo, even more attractive to settlers.

Cycle Tour on Pre Vuelta Tour Champion cyclists are working their way around the country at the moment, stopping off far and wide for photo calls, all as part of a promotional campaign to make sure everybody knows the importance of this year´s cycling tour of Spain, La Vuelta. This year, the race is even more important for the local area of Torrevieja, as the event starts from the Salinas de Torrevieja on 24 August, before meandering through over three-thousand kilometres of terrain to finish in Madrid on 15 September. "Cycling is a sport that stands and falls by its closeness", says Javier Guillén, CEO of La Vuelta. "That is why we seek to immerse our partners in the best experience they can have. Our intention is to retain our customers by conveying the emotion and passion we feel whilst doing the Vuelta," he adds.

Campoverde’s Mother Earth Festival Mother Earth Festival raises more than 3,700 euros The second edition of the Mother Earth Festival 'Breathe, reborn and reconnect' has raised 3,786'76 euros that will go to the charity ‘Aztívate and Siente Gambia’.

More than 1,200 attended the two day festival that was held in the Natural Area of Rio Seco in Pinar de Campoverde where activities included workshops of dance, music, meditation, yoga, taichi and many more. In addition, participants could spend time walking through the hippy market or regaining their strength in the area of food trucks. The children could also enjoy a wide range of games and activities with supervisors. The main objective of the festival was to promote the values of respect towards Mother Earth, to teach the benefits of a healthy diet, to reconnect with oneself and to become aware of the ‘here and now’. The total sum raised during the two day event was 3,786'76 euros which will be used entirely for projects that will be carried out in Turkana and The Gambia by the charities Aztivate Valencian Community and Feel Gambia. Both organisations say that they are most appreciative of the assistance and cooperation of Pilar de la Horadada and the Department of Tourism that allows this venture to carry out projects for creating employment opportunities, agricultural development, and improvements in education and in health.

Stargazing From the Heart of Nature On Saturday, 22 June, the first Astronomical Encounter Experience will be held at the Lagunas de La Mata and Torrevieja. A full day of activities has been organised, coinciding with the Summer Solstice, with the whole family welcome to take part. Starting at 10:00 in the morning, workshops will be held at the visitor´s centre at the park, and then at 5:00 p.m. there will be a conference about asteroids, artificial satellites and solar storms. Finally, starting at 7:30 p.m. and running through the night, telescopes will be available in the car park near to the cemetery so that visitors can observe the various planets, stars and astronomical activities. As always at the events held in the natural park, you are invited to bring along a picnic to enjoy during the break. You are also advised to wear appropriate clothing and be conscious that mosquitoes will be active, and so a repellent might be an important choice on the day.

San Javier Council wrongly charge over 7,000 euros in airport fines

Up to 20 students were suspended for between 3 and 5 days

Between January 2017 and June 2018, Local Police in San Javier issued 126 traffic fines, at the old San Javier airport, amounting to 7,035 euros. But they did so after the ordinance authorising them to raise the penalty notices had expired. Now, the City Council's legal services are looking into how they can return the fines to the drivers. The agreement that authorised the police to denounce drivers who had ‘illegally parked’ at the Aena facility ended in 2017 and as the Council failed to notify the Local Police they simply continued issuing the fines, said to number 130 drivers between 2017 and the first half of 2018,

gled to death Isabel Ruiz a retired market trader from San Pedro del Pinatar. The murder took place after he and two colleagues had broken into her home and were disturbed while stealing her money, jewellery and other valuables, which they intended to use in order to to maintain their drinking and cocaine habits. This is the case of the latest viral challenge, called "the floating desk challenge", which is spreading through the classrooms across the province. It consists of suspending a chair from a wall hanger and then putting a desk on top. Of course students who take part in this high-risk activity usually end up on the floor, with many of them requiring medical assistance. Students then record the activity on their mobile phones and spread it on social networks. But many local authorities are now taking a dim view of the student’s endeavours with the latest episode resulting in the suspension of several students from the Antonio Serna de Albatera institute only last week. According to sources, the centre has suspended between 15 and 20 high school students for a period of between 3 and 5 days.

Passengers unloading their cars at Sn javier Airport The original agreement, required Aena "to collaborate with the City of San Javier and its Local Police in providing support to the agents, through its surveillance and security cameras dotted around the airport itself,” and it was from the evidence garnered by this footage that most of the sanctions were issued. A spokesman for the mayor's office said that "from a legal point of view, we are studying how we can return the fines that were imposed during that period of time".

Students suspended in Albatera after Facebook video goes viral The benefits of social networks are unquestionable if they are used properly, but they can also become a problem when they are used to spread dangerous activities that, especially the younger generation, tends to imitate.

He then seized a handful of jewellery after which all three went to the neighbourhood of La Charca in San Pedro del Pinatar, where they exchanged them for money and cocaine. Lawyers for the defence asked to judge to take into consideration the mitigating circumstance of mild intoxication due to the consumption of narcotic substances prior to breaking into the house. Nostalgia is like a favourite uncle. The older we get, the more we tend to indulge in a bit of nostalgia. You may not know this, but the fact is that nostalgia is good for you. It is like a favourite uncle – there to sooth, comfort and support us when needs be. ‘Uncle Nostalgia’ tells me that every summer’s day of my youth was balmy and warm. He tells me to forget the days when I got caught on the road without a coat, a flat wheel on my bike and the rain ‘bucketing down.’ No, Uncle Nostalgia reminds me only of happy memories, great people I knew and feelings of social togetherness. Those warm sunny days I am reminded of make me feel warm all over again. Music, old TV newsreels, smells, photos and sports clips are all tools that ‘the uncle’ uses to invoke happy memories. When we lose a loved one, those horrible final days are etched in our mind and we fear that will be our lasting memory, but not so; thanks to Uncle Nostalgia, the happier times take precedence over the sad ones. When I trawl back to my primary school days, I forget about the ‘belt’ of a ruler or the bully in the playground. Uncle Nostalgia tells me about the day I received a shilling from the schools inspector for spelling ‘PNEUMONIA’, and the day the Primary Cert exam results were announced and I got the highest marks in the school. I would have wanted to be a good hurler. My ‘favourite uncle’ drops from my memory the matches where I was hauled off in disgrace for playing badly; or as I once wrote in a magazine article, the time “I took a career break from my hurling to concentrate on my drinking career!” Instead, nostalgia reminds me of a glorious July evening when I scored 3-2 to help my under-age team win a county championship final in Cusack Park. There is no denying that Uncle Nostalgia can also cause sadness with his planting of thoughts; but his primary purpose is to fill our minds with warm, affectionate memories. It is good to embrace those pleasant thoughts. My five year mining stint was filled with stress, danger and unbelievably hard work, but thanks to good old nostalgia, my abiding memories are of the bonds – where our lives literally depended on

each other; and my warm memories are of comradery and friendships – and only the big bonus cheques! When I farmed full-time in the 1970’s, it was a constant struggle compounded by high bank interest on borrowings. But now, Uncle Nostalgia has insured that all I remember is the sense of satisfaction from high milk yields and a sense of being close to nature. ‘Rooted to the ground’, the uncle would say.

NOSTALGIA IS: I took this photo (standing on Consum site) the day I purchased the unit (5th window from rhs) named it 'Paddy's Point', and set about turning it into Spain’s best known pub

For a decade I owned and managed a very successful Squash, Sports & Leisure Centre. It was six businesses all in one – with six times the headaches! The headaches are long gone and what remains are the memories of the brilliant squash tournaments, the banter, and the accompanying social life – and the friends I still have from that era. In 2009 I allowed my name to go forward as a candidate in the local elections. My campaign ended in failure, but good old comforting nostalgia reminds me that the 889 people who gave me a first preference vote believe I was the best man for the job

I trust that Mrs Youcantbeserious also has an Uncle Nostalgia. This is great! There will never be any mention of a contrary or unreasonable husband. Nostalgia will transform me to come across as witty, fun-loving, smart – and even ‘a good dancer in his day!’

Another decade of my life – and probably the happiest of all, was from the day I opened and ran our flagship pub in La Zenia. Uncle Nostalgia doesn’t have to scratch too deep to start an avalanche of beautiful memories from Paddy’s Point. I have more genuine friends from that chapter of my life than from any other. I am especially close to the friends we made in those early years; the ‘charter members’ I call them. As well as Uncle Nostalgia, all those wonderful people were there and they remember how we started, where we came from, and where we went. Future Masterchefs from Torrevieja Torrevieja town hall is to give two scholarships to students to study the Master of Rice and Mediterranean Cuisine at the University of Alicante, to develop works based on the culture of salt and fishing and use of blue fish, products which feature in traditional Torrevieja gastronomy. The councillor for Tourism, Fanny Serrano, announced the initiative, accompanied by the coordinator of the headquarters of the University of Alicante in Torrevieja, José Norberto, and the director of Gasterra, Josep Bernabéu, explaining that, "gastronomy is a fundamental part of tourism promotion, which is why we consider it very important to value the two star products of our gastronomy by rewarding work related to salt and blue fish from Torrevieja". The main objective of the awards is to promote academic excellence and the talent of the students, as well as to generate knowledge about issues that are deeply rooted in the gastronomic culture of the territory and generate interest for the municipality of Torrevieja. Eligible students will have to have developed their Master's Thesis at the University of Alicante and meet the requirement of being enrolled in the Master of Rice Mediterranean cuisine of the University of Alicante. This master's degree, which soon opens its registration period for

Monday 17th - Sunday 23rd June, 2019 next year, has been supported by prestigious professionals related to the world of gastronomy, oenology, gastronomy journalism and nutrition. Likewise, the students have made training visits to areas related to the Mediterranean food culture and have carried out their practices in restaurants that have Michelin stars in the province of Alicante. Thanks to the agreement between the University of Alicante and the City of Torrevieja which has seen the establishment of the university offices in Torrevieja, several promotional activities are being carried out in the field of tourism together with the town hall, which promote the gastronomic, historical, patrimonial and cultural resources of the municipality. The coordinator of the university headquarters in Torrevieja, José Norberto, has expressed his "gratitude" to the municipality of Torrevieja for having carried out the initiative. He also said that "this type of event show that collaborative work between different administrations always ends up paying off". For his part, the director of Gasterra, Josep Bernábeu, said that "the future of gastronomy is training, so we would like to continue counting on Torrevieja and give continuity to this collaborative project in the future". This is one of several promotional activities that are being carried out in the field of tourism

Cleaning Up in the Coast Garden waste, rubbish, seaweed, will soon be a distant memory to the residents and visitors of the Orihuela Costa, at least that´s the promise of the councillor, who until last Friday was responsible for urban waste, Dámaso Aparicio, as he announced that the cleaning team will be strengthened from this weekend. There will be a total of 25 workers dedicated to keeping the coast clean, supported by a new “octopus” truck for clearing garden waste, along with two smaller vans. The official summer season began at the weekend and so the announcement coincided with that, in preparation for the arrival of the largest group of tourists of the year. The new team will be divided into 3 groups, the first responsible for emptying bins and keeping the beaches spick and span in the morning, the second team will look after the surrounding area, and a smaller group will keep an eye on the area in the afternoons. The work is being carried out by a private company who have been contracted by the town hall, Actúa Servicios y Medio Ambiente SL, and adds to the team already employed throughout the municipality on a regular basis. Meanwhile, a new contract has been awarded for clearing p seaweed from the beaches, with the company Agrhimasa Mediterránea SL looking after the problem until 2020, although there is the opportunity for an extension.

It's a '10 from Len' as Strictly Come Dancing stars visit Cartagena

It's a '10 from Len' to be amongst the glitter of the stars of BBC television show Strictly Come Dancing, who berthed at Cartagena port during the show's tour on the cruiseliner Ventura.

"Dr Ranj is a very caring person - lovely - who told us he comes from a farming background, his parents being farmers. And that he had no indication of medicine as a child," said Brenda.

"I really love cruises, as you are able to get face to face with the public, and hear what they think of Strictly Come Dancing," said Slovenian born star dancer Aljaz. Aljaz and his wife, dancing star Janette Manrara, tv personality Dr Ranj Singh, professional Latin American and Ballroom dancer Oti Mabuse, and married Strictly duo Katya and Neil Jones, were amongst celebrities from the show in Spain this month.

Brenda, who also mixed with Strictly Come Dancing stars, dancer Anton De Bek and judge Craig Revel Horwood, on board the cruiseliner Brittania last year, said: "Anton De Bek was with his wife and their twins and gave questions and answers sessions with Craig.

Brenda also mixed with Strictly Come Dancing stars, including judge Craig Revel Horwood

Former head judge Len Goodman's phrase: "It's a 10 from Len" - in scoring the dancers on Strictly Come Dancing - was echoed by passengers Brenda and Paul Pennicott, on board the Cruiseliner.

"The Strictly Come Dancing stars are great, and you could see that they are relaxing, away from the bright lights of TV."

Brenda told me: "It's nice to see different parts of the world. To be in Spain with members of Strictly Come Dancing is fantastic - and we really like Cartagena.

Brenda, from Chichester, said: "To get up close to the dancers is very good - brilliant - seeing them practise dancing too, before the shows."

"Craig Revel Horwood is just the same, as on the Strictly Come Dancing show. He quipped: 'Now darlings, if you see me walking around - and want to buy me a drink - I only drink champagne!' ". Aljaz said: "Strictly Come Dancing has 11 million viewers - but obviously we don't meet them all! It's good to see and meet the people who watch the show." *COMING SOON - only in The Costa Blanca and Costa Calida Leader - "Peaky Blinders" Exclusive. Another tragedy "Things were good for a while and I met someone new. "Then when I was 21 I discovered I was pregnant.

Quesada Bowls Club by Dee Stephenson It was Quesada Blenheims turn for a day off this with week with a bye. They’re in good shape though as they are currently in 3rd place in the league with a game in hand and only 3 points behind the leaders San Miguel Moors. The Lancasters had an interesting match against Vistabella Fairways with both fielding only 4 teams and suffering deductions of 2 points each. Vistabella were the winners of the match 9-3 points and 87-48 shots. This means that unfortunately the Lancasters are labouring at the bottom of the Spitfire Division. Meanwhile in the VCL league Division A, Quesada Lions are playing really well - they won their match against Vistabella Vikings 7-5 with the shots 95-86. The Lions are in second place in the league only 4 points behind the leaders San Luis Falcons. But in Division B of the VCL League it was a dif-

This is the lift we all needed and it places us 4th in the table just 1 point behind La Siesta. Very well played to all of our team, and hopefully we will keep the standard up for the remaining matches. On Wednesday in the VCL League, we were once again playing away, this time to San Miguel Deputies. The only thing I can say about this match is that we were well beaten by a better team. The best we could manage is thanks to our rinks team who gave us our one and only point with a draw. Well done Guys, you saved us from yet another big zero. Our winning rinks team was: Jenny Davis, Peter Davis, Fred Trigwell and Bryan Eatough 18 – 18 The final result was 52 shots for to 110 against, pts 1-11 against. Win or lose, it is a pleasure to be part of the Horadada Bowls Team/Club. Horadada offers a warm welcome to new or experienced bowlers, and provides the necessary equipment. PHEW! A very close call. With high winds forecast from about 1pm the SAMM Race Officer on June 9th again decided to try to get two races run back to back. With numbers down slightly than of late as competitors started to leave Spain for the summer months 7 boats, with 12 crew members, came to the start promptly at 11.05am for the 1 hour race. Uno crossed right on the gun with the other close behind and Ginetta bring up the rear 11 seconds later. Although only 5 to 7 knots the wind was very fluky, swinging from W to S and back constantly. This caught the Topaz out and she capsized at the first mark but was soon up and racing again. It also soon had the boats spread out all round the course as some competitors read the wind shifts better than others. The last boat finished at 12.06 and the secNATHAN BROOME, Stoke City under 18 and England under 17 International goalkeeper, caught this fine carp at the El Paraiso Fishing venue when visiting his Gran and Grandad recently. This was one that Nathan didn't mind lifting out of the net for a photograph.

ond race started at 12.20, in a 7-8 knot SSW wind, again with Uno fractionally in front and all over inside 10 seconds except the Radial which had returned to shore to adjust the rig and followed 1 minute later, by which time the wind had become S 9 – 12 knots. This was a much better race with some close battles, especially between the Laser Standard and Uno just ahead of the Radial and Cuatro, that saw the Laser Standard and the Radial both pull ahead of their rival by a minute at the end of lap 5. At the finish the wind had reached 12 – 13 knots and soon built to over 15 but, by then. Everybody was safe on shore but it was still A VERY CLOSE CALL by the Race Officer. The popular winner of both races on corrected time was Uno, sailed by Vernon O’Byrne and Paulo Johnston. Great performance gentlemen.

CD Almoradi head coach Roberto to discuss future with club President CD Almoradi first team head coach Roberto Cases is to meet the Preferente IV club President to discuss his future. "I will be sitting down with the President of the club to talk about my future - but I want to stay," Roberto exclusively told me. Former Orihuela, CD Montesinos, and UD Horadada coach Cases arrived at CD Almoradi in February 2018. "For now I will rest and then we will see if the club and I reach an agreement - we all believe that it is best to continue," said Roberto. Cases left CD Montesinos ahead of the 2016-17 season, when replaced by coach Camacho – at the time the third coach in three seasons - at the Los Montesinos, Alicante based club. Cases left CD Montesinos in a move to UD Horadada, in what was deemed as a shock exit, having replaced long serving coach Juanpe, who was not given a new contract, after seven years at the club.

"I am very sorry about the decline of CD Montesinos. "I have a relationship with CD Montesinos players and some managers. I hope that they will soon return to the 1st Regional," added Roberto.

the five year old having been cut from 8-1 to 4-1. The O'Brien-Moore duo have Le Brivido, Arizona and Magna Grecia entered on day one. And the bookies are quavering. O'Brien saddles duo Ten Sovereigns in the Commonwealth Cup and Hermosa in the Coronation Stakes on Friday June 21.

BOOKIES RUNNING SCARED! Bookies are running scared as the 2019 Royal Ascot Classic meeting looms - with Ballydoyle ace trainer Aidan O’Brien holding a pack of aces during the five day meeting. O’Brien, odds on 4-7 favourite to be the leading trainer at Royal Ascot that commences on June 18, aces include Hermosa, Gold Cup favourite Stradivarius, Commonwealth Cup favourite Ten Sovereigns, and Arizona, backed into 5-1 in the Coventry Stakes. O'Brien, who saddles 10 favourites of the twenty

two races this year, had nine winners at Royal Ascot in 2015, and saddled seven winners in 2016. Hermosa, as short as 5-4 from 11-8 - is deemed the Ballydoyle 'banker' - along with strongly fancied Ten Sovereigns 7-4 in the Commonwealth Cup. O'Brien and jockey Ryan Moore, who linked up in 2016, have had 14 winners at Royal Ascot to date. O'Brien could strike with Le Brivido on the opening race of the meeting, in the Queen Anne Stakes,

Frankie Dettori Ladies Day Gold Cup fancy on Stradivarius By Andrew Atkinson FRANKIE Dettori will love Ladies Day at Royal Ascot 2019 in showcasing his ride Stradivarius in the Gold Cup on June 20 (4.25pm) (5.25pm Spain). Favourite to repeat last year's success at the Royal Ascot meeting Stradivarius will take all the beating in the 2 miles 4 furlongs race - one of the longest races of the Flat season. The Group 1 race for four year olds and above has a prizefund of £375,000: "Stradivarius is the best stayer I've ever trained - and he's a street fighter", said trainer John Gosden. The Ascot Gold Cup on Ladies Day is deemed as

the highlight of the five day meeting that gets underway on June 18. "Stradivarius is in great order and has had good preparation. The Ascot Gold Cup will be a real 'ding dong'," said Gosden. Stradivarius won the Yorkshire Cup in May - a victory that saw the odds of winning the Gold Cup slashed from 5-2 to 7-4. "Stradivarius was a bit rusty - but there was only going to be one winner. He's a fighter," said Italian ace jockey Dettori. The 2019 Royal Ascot Gold Cup odds: Stradivarius 7-4, Cross Counter 5-1, Kew Gardens 7-1, Dee Ex Bee 6-1, Southern France 12-1, Flag of Honour 14-1, Capri 20-1, Magic

Gold Cup favourite Stradivarius (June 20) alone has the bookies deeply worried, and if Hermosa and Ten Sovereigns oblige, their satchels will be emptied. O'Brien's leading Royal Ascot fancies include: Le Brivido in the Queen Anne Stakes (4-1); Arizona in the Coventry Stakes (5-1); Magna Grecia in the St James's Palace Stakes (6-1); Constantinople and Western Australia in The Queen's Vase (5-1); Magical in The Prince of Wales's Stakes (3-1); I Can Fly in The Duke of Cambridge Stakes (6-1); Monarch Of Egypt in The Norfolk Stakes (6-1); Pink Dogwood in The Ribblesdale Stakes (5-1); Etoile in The Albany Stakes (6-1); Japan and Sir Dragonet in The King Edward Stakes (5-1); Ten Sovereigns in The Commonwealth Cup (7-4);

Los Nietos Golf Society them a little slower than usual and somewhat unpredictable, but certainly did not detract from our enjoyment. The format for the day was an individual Stableford with a number of prizes on offer. The winner for nearest the pin hole 5 was John Stevens. The winner for nearest the pin hole …..was not won! The winner for the group was Ken Higgins with an admiral effort of 38 points. In the 1-24 handicap category the winner for nearest the pin hole 7 was our Captain Tim B. The winner for nearest the pin hole…….. No one reached it!! The longest drive on hole 11 was won by Albert Thrupp with an absolutely massive drive!

Los Nietos Golf Society travelled to Hacienda de Riquelme, near Sucina for our June game. The day was sponsored by Graeme Wilson from AVALON, the funeral plan people. At this time of year, it’s a fair bet that that the only weather conditions that we are going to have to endure is sunshine! And so it was for our day, but add in a cheeky little cross wind as the round progressed. The staff were, as always, welcoming and professional and the course was generally of a high standard but we had been pre-warned that the greens were still recovering from some essential hollow tine work some week or so before . This made

And the winner for this category and still very much in form and playing off 11 at the start of the day was Albert, pictured left, with an equally impressive achievement as his longest drive, scoring a massive 44 points .Vic, our handicap secretary has seen fit to reduce that 11 to 7 for his next game with us! Congratulations to all winners ; it’s always refreshing to see new names in the winning boxes and a sincere thank you , once again to Darrell and Laura , Clive and Christine for their much appreciated efforts towards our barbeque, which was held at Lismos in the village . Also , our thanks to Avalon for their interest and support and look forward to our final game of this half of the year which will be held at La Roda in early July .

Seven members only played an individual Medalford competition with serial winners Ray Housley and Alistair Douglas competing for the winners slot. Ray triumphed by virtue of a superior final Stableford total of 18 points to Alistair's 15 points. Alistair had some compensation by claiming the nearest the pin prize on Hole 5, with, unusually, no-one managing to find the green in 14 attempts at Hole 6. Los Crispin Golf Society Thirty four members, including four playing for handicap, teed it up at Lo Romero to compete for our second 'Major' of the year. Apart from a cold strong breeze, playing conditions were good. Despite the fact that there was a 'mix up' with our booking, which meant that we finally teed off nearly an hour and a half later than we were expecting, most members seemed to enjoy the day! Although a little later than we anticipated, in view of the above we, as usual returned to Lo Crispin Tavern, where we were supplied with welcome tapas and the the day's prizes were distributed. N.T.P. on Par 3s. Hole 5 - Ronnie Spiers, Hole 7 Keith Davison, Hole 12 - Harry Wilcock Hole 15 - Nobody managed to reach or stay on the green. As we were playing today for the Spring Cup, there were no separate prizes for either the gold or silver divisions. 1st Place - Gordon Cobb 30 pts. off 18 (Winner of the Spring Cup) 2nd. Place - Harry Wilcock 29 pts. off 15 (on count back) 3rd. Place - Bill Croft 29 pts. off 19 4th. Place - Steve Harrington 28 pts. off 24 Keith Davison returned the best score of those members playing for handicap, with 33 pts. (on count back). Harry (just one more) Wilcock's day turned out to be a good one, as he was also the sole winner of the 2s pot.

Finally, the Free game Draw Raffle was won by Geolff Dowsett. Our next game is an inter - society game against Quesda Golf Society at La Finca on 19th. June. Las Ramblas Golf Society Results for w/c 10.6.19 by Peter Reffell With a terrific score of 91 points (just 3 short of our all-time record), Reg Akehurst, Marleen Billen, Harry Howard and Friedel Knebel took 1st place in Monday’s 6x6x6. On the 7th hole, where it was the best two scores to count, they managed to get nine! Wednesday’s Stableford was all a question of club selection as each player was only allowed 5 clubs and a putter. Given his equipment restriction Terry Cullen did very well to take the top slot with 38 points. Hot on his heels was Joyce McClusky with 37 and Andy McDonald managed third (on countback) with 36 points. Two ‘2’s today going to Dave Pulling and Andy McDonald. Beating Joyce McClusky 6&5 it was Ellen Drakesmith who was crowned this year’s winner of our Singles Match play Knockout Competition (husband John took the title last year!) In a ‘friendly’ Yellow Peril it was Reg Akehurst, Mike Mahony, Graham Murray and Andy McDonald who shared the spoils of victory. After deciphering their score card they had amassed an amazing 170 points (which was nearly 60 more than my team!) and came up just one point short of our all-time record. Also well worth a mention is Annemarie Weisheit. She managed to putt out on six holes all of which were over 25 foot! And remember ‘Golf is a game of misses. The deals shown in the table are some of the best available to you until 31 August. World Handicap System In the last article I introduced our readers to the introduction of a new handicapping system to be applied globally and today I have more information on this revolutionary system. What is the World Handicap System (WHS)? The World Handicap System (WHS) aims to bring six different handicap systems together into a single set of Rules for Handicapping, enabling golfers of different abilities to play and compete on a fair and equal basis, no matter how or where they play. While the six existing handicap systems have generally worked very well locally, on a global basis, their different characteristics have sometimes resulted in inconsistency, with players of the same ability ending up with slightly different handicaps. This has sometimes resulted in unnecessary difficulties and challenges for golfers competing in handicap events or for tournament administrators. A single WHS will pave the way to consistency and portability. What does this mean for the sport? The WHS initiative has provided an opportunity for all existing handicapping authorities to collaborate; to consider the best features within each of the current systems and create a system which is modern and relevant for both the way the sport is played today around the world and how it may be developed in the future. The WHS is designed to be inclusive, easy to understand and implement, without sacrificing accuracy or integrity. Ultimately, this should help provide a solid foundation to the sport, for everyone from beginners to the experienced, from the recreational to the competitive, thereby supporting the development of the sport through increased participation. The administration and oversight of handicapping will continue to be the responsibility of each handicapping authority and National Association, thus helping to ensure the credibility of the system at the local level. These organisations will also have the discretion to tailor the system to fit their own golfing culture. For example, the WHS will offer a broad range of formats that are acceptable for handicap purposes, with some form of corroboration, and handicapping authorities and National Associations will have discretion to select from that range to both support their local golfing culture as well as encouraging golfers

LaMangaTorre CC fall to 9 wicket defeat to Levante 1st

By Andrew Atkinson LaMangaTorre CC suffered a nine wicket defeat to Levante 1st in the fourth league fixture of the 2019 season - with weather conditions very overcast and strong winds whirling around the ground. Having won the toss, Levante 1st choose to bowl. LaMangaTorre CC skipper Kieren Wood opened the batting, with opening partner, J. Kinsella. Runs came reasonably easy, with 26 being scored off the first five overs. The sixth over saw the first wicket fall, as a short ball saw a half-hearted shot clip the glove of K. Wood, and carry nicely to the keeper. C. Gara came in at no.3 for his League debut. With the wind still strong and causing problems, for both batsmen and bowlers, the 10th over saw C. Gara end with a good Yorker from Tariq, clean bowling him. 41/2. R. Maini, in at 4, only stayed in for three overs, before a bowling change, bringing on Sandeep, who started his bowling spell - clean bowling

R.Maini. 53/3. C. Rumi went in at 5 and saw it through at the 15 over mark. Score: 65/3. J. Kinsella was still standing strong and taking the fight to the bowlers. C. Rumi fell, bowled by Azhar. G. Neve, in at 6, was out the next over, when Sandeep struck again, as the ball slipped between bat and pad. P. Harvey went in and tried to steady the boat, with Sandeep bowling remarkably well, but could only watch in horror as J. Kinsella - after his hard work, in notching up his first 50 for LaMangaTorre CC - was cut short of celebrations, following good work behind the stumps, seeing him stumped and claiming Sandeep's third wicket. 80/6 off 19 overs. T. Knowles went in at no.8, with the building up of dot balls, facing Sandeep and seeing some early frustrations. A big swing missed, and lead to him being clean bowled: 85/7. S. Khan went in at 9, hitting Sandeep for a boundary, first ball. Sandeep was bowled out, which lead to Tariq returning to bowl, and struck in his first

(in assN with Costa Blanca Green Fee s vcs) to post as many scores as possible. Despite these responsibilities, moving from six different systems to one will almost certainly lead to other efficiencies, allowing National Associations more opportunity to focus their resources on golf development and strategic initiatives to support the sport within their jurisdiction. It would also provide the opportunity to evaluate de-personal golfing data to help monitor the health of the game. Why now? Golf is a global sport, with a single set of playing Rules, a single set of equipment Rules and a single set of Rules of Amateur Status. The missing link is handicapping, and after significant engagement and collaboration with the existing handicapping authorities and National Associations, it has been agreed that the time is right to bring the different handicap systems together. over back - as he bowled P. Harvey - who had dug in. 112/8 off 28 overs. Connor Wood went in at 10 and scored a few runs, getting his first 4 in division 1. The exhaustion got to him though, and a good Yorker landed full on his foot - given lbw. H. James was the last man in, with 128 on the board, and five overs left of the innings. S. Khan continued to play some big shots with H. James contributing runs. S. Khan fell, as he hit the ball hard and low, back at the bowler with very quick hands, seeing him get low to take the catch. LaMangaTorre CC all out for 141 with J. Kinsella (53) and S.Khan (33) being the only two batsmen to get into double digits. Sandeep finished with figures of 8 overs, 5 maidens, 4 wickets, 7 runs. A change in the line-up saw Kieren Wood put on the gloves for the first time in a year. Winds had built even stronger during the innings break. Bowling from one end was simple, with the wind blowing with them; bowling from the other end caused a lot of problems, running in against the wind. The batsmen took advantage of the conditions, with 84 hit from the first 15 overs. H. James claimed a wicket, making Shakeel smash the ball, to long on, with the wind and land perfectly to C. Rumi, who made no mistake in taking the catch. The batsmen kept their heads down and survived good bowling from the windy end. R. Maini, P. Harvey, H. James and T. Knowles were hit for 87 off 13 overs. The score ticked along and by the 26th over Levante 1st had passed the 141 mark - with 9 wickets in hand.

Rys Morgan finished on 78 not out, assisted by Sandeep, 24 not out. C. Wood and C. Rumi finished: 0-13 & 0-18 off their five overs each. "It was a better performance on the field by LaMangaTorre CC, but it's hard to pinpoint the errors, when the weather conditions were so variant," Kieren Wood told me. "Levante 1st played well and found the right bowlers to bowl - at the right end early on whereas we struggled to find a bowling partnership," said Kieren. "We have two wins and two losses in the league and there's so some hard work to do to improve," said Kieren. LaMangaTorre CC Player Profiles will continue exclusively in the Costa Blanca and Costa Calida Leader during the season.

Preferente Division Roundup BY STEVE HIBBERD Both Intercity Alicante and Hercules ´B´ were successful in their quest for promotion to Tercera division football, as they safely negotiated 2 legged finals. Intercity Alicante won the Preferente division by a mile, so it was no surprise that they won both legs of their ties against CD Wave (0-4 & 1-0). Hercules also won their 1st leg at home 2-0 against Ribarroja, then just about did enough in the goalless return meeting.

Monday 17th - Sunday 23rd June, 2019 Alas, Villajoyosa will be playing another season in the preferente division, for they lost their final play off encounter against Beniganim. Having lost 4-1 away in the 1st leg, it was always going to be a tall order to turn around the deficit, so a 1-1 home draw left them well short of their target. Meanwhile, a little more close to home, Thader Rojales have announced a replacement for ex coach Jose Reina. Jon Ortega joins from Segunda Regional side Sporting Saladar. Last season, Ortega took Saladar to 3rd place, just missing out on promotion by 3 points. Hailing from the Basque region of Spain, his appointment has confirmed that Thader have made a firm commitment to this young coach, and his fresh ambitious ideas.

SMGS at Lo Romero - 12 June

Not to be put off, three players made scores that will lead to their handicaps being cut. Neil Sheldon and Dave Blackburn both made 38 points, Brian Butler 37. Family success was had for the Petterssons and McCanns with both couples appearing in the prizes. Unfortunately a couple of disqualifications took place of players not signing their cards before handing in. Members are asked to ensure they sign prior to submission, and inform guests to do so. Where to draw the line between being a friendly society whilst ensuring rules are adhered to is a tricky one, which will continue to cause debate within the society. A new sponsor joined the ranks this week of those supporting SMGS. Leisa from Spanish Insurance, based in Ciudad Quesada and La Zenia, came to introduce herself and her company to members and

La Marina Golf Society Las Colinas Stableford Competition by Roger Honey

We arrived at this fabulous venue, and one of every golfer in Spain's favourite courses, with some cloud and a gentle breeze. With a full compliment of 24 players we all enjoyed a sunny day, but with the breeze increasing during the round. The Gold Division winner was one of our Scottish contingent Phil Gill with 31 points, the Silver Division was won by Iain Lyall with a good score of 39 points, considering the wind. The nearest the pins went to Tim Ruse, Gill Ludkiewic with Elspeth Craig collecting the remaining 2 ! The 2 's pot was shared between Tim Ruse, John Brastock and Elspeth Craig. Many thanks to Paulo and Nikki for looking after us at the Sport's Complex after our game. Our next game is on Thursday 27th June for the President's Cup and will be played at Lo Romero. The entry sheet is on the notice board at the Sport's Complex in La Marina Urbanisation.

What was meant to be a fairly early shotgun start for 41 members and 6 guests turned in to a long wait for some as confusion reigned at the course. Somehow a 9.30 shotgun tee-off time became a nearly two hour wait for those last off as the course admitted an administrative error led to those on the desk on the day not realising, and with ground staff organised to work on a number of holes. And a lot of work had been done. Greens recovering from hollow tining and heavily sanded, and a lot of fairways similarly treated, meant bumpy, slow greens and little run on tee shots hit down the middle. Not quite the glorious condition in which Lo Romero is normally found.

A small but competitive group of 20 players attended The Plaza Golf Society event at Alenda. The round started with a short rain shower, but after the 2nd hole the weather was glorious. Scoring was pretty good however as usual one player struggled more than most and propping up the event was visitor Tony Hawley with a below par 15pts!! The 2's pot provided three successes...well done to Phil De Lacy, Kev (9 Fingers) Bird and Big Ronaldo Temple. Nearest the pins sponsored by our excellent hosts, The Alehouse, saw Kev and Ronaldo up again with Neil Bason and Kathie Buzzeo who also took the best Lady prize as well as best Visitors score with 33pts off handicap 19...a good day’s golf for Kathie. Second best visitor on the day saw debutant Jonny Beamish coming in with 21pts of 15. In Silver third place had the very consistent Ray Pullen 3rd with 32pts off 21 behind Neil Bason 33pts off 20 pipped by the evergreen Phil (47) Sully scoring 35pts off 13. In Gold scoring was very close with Warren Harris third and missing out on count back to Ronaldo Temple both scoring 35pts off 7 and 5 respectively. Winning and best score of the day and not new to the podium was Callam Hitcham with

a brilliant 38pts off just 1. Well done to all players who move on to Lo Romero in two weeks time, 28th June, with a couple of places still available so log onto our site www.theplazagolfsociety.com to register.
