QUESADA’S Joseph Billet, known locally as “Joe, The Cat Man,” hasn’t always led a leisurely life of retirement in the sun, indeed quite the opposite.

As a 15 year old in 1942, the teenager joined the Merchant Navy as he sought out his very first taste of ‘grown up’ adventure. And it came to him soon enough as on Tuesday, 6 June 1944, D

Day, Joe was working aboard a merchant vessel carrying troops as they embarked on the Allied invasion of Normandy. Seventy five years later he was privileged to return to Normandy as part of the Voyage

of Remembrance, organized by The Royal British Legion, for 300 D-Day Veterans, who were each accompanied by a family member or carer. Continued on Page 4

A hundred San Pedro families face imminent eviction

Josefa says that she has cried herself to sleep almost every night since she received the judicial notice warning her of the imminent expulsion from her home, in San Pedro del Pinatar. With her two children, one of them disabled her biggest fear is the moment that the bailiffs turn up to throw her out of the house, that she has lived in for many years but that is owned by La Caixa Bank. “Social Services tell me that I must look for another house for rent but there are none, and even if I could find accommodation, with the onset of the summer tourist season I could not afford the very high prices.” “My only lifeline at the moment is the presence of the members of the Platform of those Affected by the Mortgage (PAH) who will try to stop the eviction.” But Josefa is not the only mother in such a situation. Carmen has two grandchildren and two children aged between 14 months and two and a half years, and she too doesn’t sleep knowing that she has already received the date of her eviction which is set for 27 June. "The only work I am able to get is for five months a year in the greenhouses and I cannot pay the rent of 300 euros," explains the head of the family. Paqui, who is affected by a degenerative disease, doesn’t receive enough pension even to afford a market rent. "I've been waiting for the social rent that La Caixa has been promising me since 2011, but now they are only granting it to those who have an income of more than 13,000 euros, in order to make sure they are paid," he explains. I also have a date set for my eviction by court order on 2 July. They represent just three of the many families in San Pedro del Pinatar, who have notice of imminent eviction, although there are another 30 families in San Javier and 62 Torre Pacheco who are expecting to receive their own dates very soon. Last Tuesday many of the families gathered at the doors of the San Pedro del Pinatar Town Hall

where they asked for the intervention of the mayor, Visitación Martínez, support that would at least postpone the eviction of the families, especially those who have young or disabled children in their care. "It's a social emergency," says the Platform spokeswoman Charo Tárraga. "We do not simply want to postpone the eviction for a month, because it will not solve anything. There are families without light or water in San Pedro, unable to even clean themselves and many scrapping around for food, "she claims. The new wave of evictions in the Mar Menor region has recently peaked because "the banks have introduced a new offensive to kick families out of the properties where they had previously agreed to social rents, in order to reallocate them to people who are able to pay a higher market price". Tárraga says that "there are also unscrupulous money lenders, ‘vulture funds’, who are offering money to families in Torre Pacheco, between 2,500 and 3,000 euros. Some take the loans out of fear but others do not, because they understand that it only secures the rent for a while.” The Platform proposes that all of the Social Care Departments representing municipalities in the Mar Menor "should enter into negotiations with the banks and financial institutions in order to at least reach temporary rental agreements for their empty homes, with maximum monthly payments of 200 euros." The mayor of San Pedro says that "we expect the Court to postpone the eviction next week, but we are currently looking for a rental apartment as an alternative, although during the summer the difficulty increases." Martinez said that "we must sit down with the banks to find out how many properties they have and at least try to reach a temporary agreement on social rents, to which we can then add our own help provided by Social Services, both with the initial deposit and with the first few months of utilities.”

COSTA BLANCA’S D DAY HERO CONTINUED FROM PAGE ONE Both Joe and his partner Rose say that it was a truly amazing experience that they feel much honored to have been a part of. The Royal British Legion arranged for coaches to collect the veterans from various pick up points. They were taken to Dover where they were greeted by a welcoming party and a military band. Refreshments were served inside the cruise terminal where a duo entertained the group singing favorite wartime songs. Reception complete the pair were taken aboard The MV Boudicca and shown to their comfortable cabin. Following the mandatory safety drill the evening was spent spent enjoying dinner and relaxing with other veterans. The Boudicca cast off for Dunkirk at about 9pm. Bob Gamble, of The Royal British Legion, provided the Dunkirk welcome where there were plenty of RBL staff available to look after the veterans and answer their questions. Shuttle buses were available on the quayside for those who wanted to see Dunkirk but generally it was a day for relaxing, meeting other veterans and hearing their stories. The Observatory lounge at the top of the ship was a good place for this, not least of which because of the free beer!

May. Choirs and bands were on either side of the stage, then on came the Guards looking magnificent in their red tunics and Bearskins, followed by the RAF Regiment and the Royal Navy. The story of Dday was told with commentary and pictures after which President Trump took to the stage, followed by President Macron and Theresa May. The final speaker to take to the stage was a 99 year old veteran who was met with deafening applause. In her speech Queen Elizabeth said “My generation was very resilient.” Finally, there was a fly past by the RAF along with the Red Arrows. It was back to the marquees for lunch followed by an opportunity to speak with the dignitaries, including Theresa May and President Macron, before returning to the ship. Once back onboard The Boudicca set off for Le Havre amid a flotilla of naval ships, their crews lined up on deck to salute the veterans as they sailed out of Portsmouth.

Overnight the group then sailed on to Poole where The Royal Marines were waiting to greet them on the quayside, all very keen to talk to the veterans and show off their modern equipment and weapons.

The following morning the party was taken by coach to Bayeux War Graves Cemetery – with a police escort no less. Once again marquees had been erected with refreshments but alas no English Breakfast Tea! However the delicious pastries made up in together with coffee or any kind of herbal tea. After the refreshments it was time to gather around the memorial for the service followed by the laying of wreaths, which was all very moving.

This was another “relaxing” day in between trips to the dining room for delicious meals! The veterans were aged from 90 to 101, all very smart wearing their berets and blazers, with their unit insignia, and weighted down with their medals, but many still quite fit and all happy to share their amazing stories.

This ceremony was attended by Prince Charles with Camilla, Theresa May and President Macron. Afterwards it was back to the marquee for lunch where the British military had once again saved the day by obtaining a supply of English Tea bags! Then it was back to the ship which was staying overnight in Le Havre.

The next day, the 5th of June it was on to Portsmouth to attend the big D-Day ceremony on Southsea Common. As the ship’s gangway was quite steep it was decided that every veteran would leave the ship in wheelchairs – they were told that it was for speed!

The following day, despite the pouring with rain, several vets boarded coaches once more to visit the Beaches. The coaches first went to Arromanches on Gold beach where the D-Day museum presented all the veterans with a booklet containing a hundred euros worth of vouchers to be spent in the town, together with a backpack containing various presents.

On the quayside the party were soon aboard their coaches taking them to Southsea Common where marquees had been set up and refreshments laid on. Waiting on the veterans were service volunteers, numbers well over subscribed as so many of them wanted to hear the veterans stories and share the day with them. This time was spent walking around and chat with serving soldiers, sailors and airmen.

Joe with Tobias Ellwood MP, the Under Secretary of State for Defence

Soon it was off to the arena where a large stage was set up. There was a seating area for the veterans and a central are for the VIP’s, including The Queen with Prince Charles, President Trump and his wife Melania, President Macron of France and Theresa

Joe flanked by RBL Guide, Eugenie Brooks, and Rose Lyon, prior to laying a wreath at the Bayeux War Graves cemetery

By this time it had stopped raining and the sun did try to make an appearance. On the way back there was a short stopover at Sword Beach for a photo opportunity ARTICLE BY: around the memorial. French people of all ages were very welcoming throughout the trip and came out specially to thank the veterans for “liberating our country”. The RBL guide on Joe’s coach throughout was Eugenie Brooks and she looked after the goup particularly well, helping Joe to lay a wreath at Bayeux cemetery. The Boudicca stayed in Le Havre overnight, as a storm was on its way, eventually setting sail on Saturday morning for Portsmouth. Later in the morning the Captain decided it was too rough to proceed to Portsmouth as originally planned so it was back to Dover where a lot of the townspeople came out to greet them. On the Sunday morning the

ROSE LYON

coached returned the veterans to their drop off points full of emotion after the busy, but wonderful time, that had been enjoyed all had. The President of RBL boarded each coach to say a few words of thanks and wish us Godspeed. After the war Joe joined the Army, first the artillery, then the Paratroop Regiment and from there he became a Malay Scout, serving in the Malayan jungles during the Malay Emergency. The Malay Scouts then became 22 SAS. The Special Air Service had previously been formed by the former Scots Guards officer, David Stirling in 1941, but was then disbanded after the war only to be reformed in 1947. José Císcar resigns as provincial president of the PP The provincial president of the Partido Popular, José Císcar, announced on Tuesday afternoon his resignation from the leadership of the Alicante PP during a meeting of the executive committee. Císcar had been considering his resignation for some time and he had taken the final decision following the formation of the municipal governments last Saturday. He will, however, continue with his seat in the Valencian Parliament but will leave provincial politics. Following his resignation the Board of Directors appointed the mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón , his replacement with the mayor of Benidorm, Antonio Pérez, general secretary. The appointments at this stage are only provisional and still need to be ratified by the PP National leadership, the regional leadership headed by

The Ministry estimates that 65% of passengers who now use the Alicante-Barcelona route have the Murcia Region as their origin or destination. At the meeting, several other national routes were discussed but it was agreed that it is the Barcelona link that currently has commercial possibilities. Civil Guard as one of the alleged perpetrators was detained on 13 December 2018. Thanks to this first arrest and, the continuing efforts of the investigator two further suspects were arrested and taken into police custody. The three alleged thieves accessed the different homes at night and fled the area along an adjoining beach. The goods that they stole in the robberies were later sold in secondhand stores across the Vega Baja. The three detainees are a 31-year-old Algerian and two Spaniards, brothers of Algerian origin, 25 and 24 years of age. They are charged with 3 counts of burglary, committed in homes in Orihuela Costa and one of robbery with violence and intimidation.

Císcar is 2nd left with Dolon on the right Isabel Bonig and with the candidate for the presidency of the Diputación, Carlos Mazón. In statements to journalists, Císcar explained that this is a personal decision adding that, after seven years, it was time to "close a stage and a cycle." He added "I need some more time for myself, and for my personal life.” Three arrested for robbery in Campoamor homes The Civil Guard have arrested three people for committing several robberies with force on a housing urbanisation in Campoamor during December 2018. Corvera negotiations for Barcelona route open with Vueling IAG, the parent company of Vueling, are currently studying the proposal of Murcia’s Minister of Public Works to establish a route between Murcia and Barcelona. The meeting took place on Thursday, and was based on a study presented by Patricio Valverde and the secretary general of the Ministry, Yolanda Muñoz, who both say that there is sufficient demand to establish this service at the new Corvera airport.

The Region would then be able to expand its connection options with many other destinations in the world, since passengers could use the Barcelona airport as a hub to reach far more cities. Valverde explained to the Vueling executives the strategic location of the airport, which is in the centre of the Mediterranean Arc. The area of influence reaches a population of 4 million inhabitants, who all reside within a radius of two hours by car. The regional government said that 35% of Alicante airport traffic also has its origin or destination in the Region, which translates into 4.5 million potential passengers, of which 4.1 million are international with the rest coming from national destinations. Their intention is to capture the greatest possible flow of traffic, taking advantage of the current saturation in Alicante. IAG, the owners of Vueling, are the parent company of a number of well-known airlines including Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia and Level.

Put your daughter out to play, Mrs Worthington… Noel Coward didn’t spare Mrs Worthington – nor indeed her daughter for that matter, when he told her, quite emphatically, “Don’t put your daughter on the stage, Mrs Worthington.” Whatever became of the daughter is anybody’s guess: She could have joined a convent for all I know. Mr Coward should have followed up his stark warning with some tit-bit of advice as to what Mrs Worthington might do with her starstruck daughter. Had I been asked, I would have suggested that the best the mother could have done for all her daughters, and for her sons, would be to put them on the pitch, court, course, ring, rink or track. In other words, put your children into sport. Participation in sport will do more for students than all the degrees you can get your hands on. But it doesn’t have to be ‘either or’, because findings show that athletes in college do better academically as well. It is not only young people who can enhance their quality of life by participating in some sport. Every age group is the better for having a sporting ‘distraction’. There is a sport out there to suit everybody – even those who claim not to be ‘the sporty type!’ The health benefits from exercise are well documented. Weight can be kept in check. The heart is strengthened and the risk of type 2 diabetes is greatly diminished. An immunity to many diseases is built up as you strengthen bones and muscles. We have just touched on the physical benefits of sport, dear Mrs Worthington, but it is in the head that the greatest advantages are accrued. I remember from my squash days that no matter how tired, stressed, or worried I was going on court, by the time I got through the shower at the other end I was a new man; totally reenergised, carefree and happy with my lot. Sport triggers chemicals in the brain that make you feel happier and relaxed. All of life is compacted into the sporting world: The exhilaration of the hard fought victory … just for now – because next time it will be the feeling of devastation from defeat. Young people learn how to

cope with both. Children will get no better lesson in the fact that life isn’t always fair. Life mirrors sport (or should that be the other way round?) in so far as we have to learn to accept bad calls. All can see that the cheater sometimes wins, but that in the final analysis, honesty, honour and dignity is more important.

Confidence and self-esteem is nurtured on the playing fields. Teamwork is practiced and close bonds are cemented. Sport builds leaders. Last – but far from being least; sport must be about having fun. When I owned a sports and leisure centre, one logo I coined was; ‘Squash for Fitness – Squash for Fun.’ We used have team tournaments (graded) and ‘handicap tournaments, so that every player got equal benefit and enjoyment. This brings us nicely onto telling Mrs Worthington that her daughter doesn’t have to be the best at sport to obtain maximum satisfaction. I am not a golfer, but all of us can see that every golfer can enjoy the same pleasure – irrespective of ability. And what else can you put in the boot of your car that will give you a legitimate reason for being out all day with people you like … other than a set of golf clubs! There is a sport out there to suit all ages and levels of fitness. The rough and tumble of football for the young can someday be substituted for the sedate games of bowls or bowling for those over 110. So what then do you do when all of your playing days are over – around 118 or so? This is the best bit. We all become ‘active spectators’ – that’s what! Shouting and roaring at the referee once again clears our head of any personal problems. As the ‘dirty so ‘n so’s’ only play for the opposing teams a certain quota of bad language is at least tolerated: Or as my grandson Jack said to me at a match; “Grandad, if I was allowed to swear,

that’s what I would be saying too!” (It was the fan behind us who was swearing – just in case my reputation is on the line!) So now, Mrs Worthington, don’t you see what is best for your daughter? And while you’re at it – why don’t you oil up that ‘oul’ bike for yourself…? Don’t Forget Before criticizing your wife’s faults, you must remember it may have been those very defects which prevented her from getting a better husband than the one she married. Corvera Airport loses more passengers

Operator Aena reported that Murcia airport is among the seven airports that have lost travellers during the period January to May while 39 others in the national network have increased their activity, including Alicante, which has grown by 8.2% in the period, reaching 5.3 million passengers.

5.6% compared to the same period of 2018, with an increase of 5.2% in the number of operations, a total of 899,389 flights.

Figures released for the first five months of Corvera’s operation show that it has lost 69,000 passengers during the period. It had 353,304 users, compared to 422,358 last year in San Javier.

Alicante airport, along with Valencia, are the two airports that grew the most of all the large Spanish airports. They are followed by Madrid-Barajas, Málaga Tenerife and Barcelona.

In May there were 121,069 travellers, down from the 139,775 last year. There were also a hundred fewer flights.

Corvera airport had another negative month in May, as it showed a decrease of 18,706 passengers compared to the activity of the San Javier airport in the same period last year. The loss is similar to that experienced in April, when there were 20,000 fewer travellers. However a spokesman for the new airport, which opened in midJanuary, said that they expect to recover this year's traffic ratios during the summer, following the addition of several new routes and a greater number of flights.

In comparison, the Alicante terminal, Corvera’s main competitor, has increased its passenger throughput by 8% so far this year.

Of the total of travellers during May, more than 17 million passengers took international flights, 2.7% more than in the same month of 2018, while 7.33 million travelled domestically, 5.3% more.

Despite the disappointing numbers Aena say they are confident of better figures by the end of the year

At the national level, airports belonging to the Aena network registered more than 100.6 million passengers up to May, which represents an increase of

In May, Spanish airports registered more than 24.6 million passengers, an increase of 3.4%, with a total of 213,900 aircraft movements, 3% more than last year.

Cabo Roig Businessmen vow to rid the area of Manteros and their Drugs

he Cabo Roig business Community is absolutely livid at the apathy that is currently being shown by the Orihuela Government at the problems they are facing daily with the increasing number of ‘Looky Looky Men’ who are invading the Cabo Roig Strip. And not only is the problem being ignored by the politicians but the Local Police are also turning a ‘blind eye’ at the illegal traders, often driving past them without even a glance, and certainly doing nothing to curtail their bootleg business that, with the arrival of the summer season, is growing out of all control almost day by day. And it’s not only the trade in dodgy trainers and clothing that is causing concern as the dealing of drugs, now understood to be largely heroin, is also being conducted in the open, with the suppliers doing little to hide their transactions from the public. Many of the legal businesses in Cabo Roig, which, unlike the manteros, are contributing to the national economy, employing staff and paying their taxes, are concerned that if the problem is not dealt with as a matter of urgency there will be a lot of establishments

One pub owner said “You can see them dealing in drugs every night.”

authorities allow this to go on?

One businessman told the Leader “There are people who have been coming to the strip for years, but they have now stopped because it is turning into a ‘no go’ area, and yet you can travel up and down the coast, from Torrevieja to the Mar Menor, and you won’t see any illegal trading, certainly not on the scale that it occurs in Cabo Roig. It’s time to move them on now, with or without the help of the town hall.”

At the last meeting of the Cabo Roig Strip Association local businessmen agreed that the presence of the manteros, their drugs and their fake goods, is their number one problem, and have demanded that the President of the organisation “conveys their distress, as they religiously pay their taxes, whilst the authorities continue to turn a blind eye at the activities of illegal traders.

Another pub owner said “You can see them dealing in drugs every night. They even approach tourist couples who are simply out for a quiet meal with their young children. These people will not come back to Cabo Roig if the harassment continues.” I personally watched on last week as two groups of ‘manteros’ fought each other outside the Europa supermarket while the Local Police watched on. They did eventually walk across but after a few quiet words the police returned to their car and drove away. There was no question, either, of the police checking identities, licenses or the legality of the goods that were being traded. They felt that a short discussion was enough, which is exactly the reason why the problems have now grown out of total control, because both the politicians and the police are shirking their responsibilities. There was a similar incident later in the evening with approximately 20 of the ‘looky looky men’ hiding at the side of the Chinese Emporium, adjacent to the Queen Victoria pub, from where Chinese staff act as lookouts for the illegal traders. The Local Police simply walked across and had a chat with them, with no apparent action taken. As I walked along the front of Cabo Roig strip, later that evening, I counted 53 manteros trad-

One businessman said that all bars and restaurants should refuse the illegal traders entry onto their enclosures and forecourts, although when this was done 12 months ago it was noted that a number of owners subsequently reported mysterious damage to their establishments, broken windows and smashed furniture, shortly afterwards, but it was agreed that unless all businesses stand together the situation will deteriorate even further. What cannot be tolerated is the dealing in drugs that is now prevalent in the area and the aggression that many of the manteros show toward the public who refuse to buy their wares. Having spent many years building the area into what it is today the business owners were urged not to let the manteros walk in and take it all away. “We must fight our corner with the Ayuntamiento and the Police to take back the Cano Roig Strip”, said one business owner. “Let's not waste any more time talking about it. Let's get it done.”

The ‘Killer’ - Benijofar Croupier’s gamble that took him round the world By Andrew Atkinson EXCLUSIVE Benijofar businessman Martin Ronald Dean took a gamble with life as a teenager - and ended up travelling the world - as a Croupier! "I saw a job advertised at the Job Centre for a waiter, and heard about a Croupier School Course, which I took up and got trained for, aged 18," said Martin. "I began at the Albion Sporting Club in Salford, on an eight weeks course. Roulette training was the hardest to learn.Croupier training entailed six weeks Roulette, one week Blackjack, and one week practice, before you went 'onto the floor'," said Martin. "The first day was daunting. Many punters - mainly Chinese - big gamblers," said Martin, aged 50. A croupier is someone appointed at a gambling table to assist in the conduct of the game, especially the distribution of bets and payouts. Orphelins are numbers (areas) of the roulette wheel: "Punters pile their numbers played. Putting your markers on, known as a 'Dolly'. "The biggest win I recall was £50,000 - during a three and a half hours session," said Martin, who left Manchester to work with P&O Ferries, on the Cruiseliner's casinos. Shifts were over four hours, during the evenings," said Martin - who was sacked after breaking strict protocol rules. "I was sacked, after being caught singing with a group on stage one evening. So I returned to The Albion," said Martin. "At The Albion I was called 'Killer' - told by bosses to 'kill the game'

Tuesday 25th - Sunday 30th June, 2019 - which entails a change of croupier. Known as 'spinning the sections' - you CAN get the ball in there. Disrupting the roulette game," said Martin. "Later I moved on to The Sergeant Yorke, in Manchester's Empire Street, near to Strangeways Prison. "Then on to Tibb Street, Manchester, Sasha's Hotel, working as a hotel porter, where I met John Pertwee - during the time he was playing the part of Dr Who. "What a great, lovely guy. He was performing at the Opera House, Manchester. I was 'star-struck', at the age of 19," reflected Martin. Martin returned to The Sergeant Yorke Hotel, a stint that lasted only a few months: "I fell out with one of the pit guys - and walked out," said Martin, who headed to Bournemouth, where his parents took him and the family on holidays. "I love Bournemouth - but I didn't know what I was going to do for a job. I went to the Midland Hotel - and got a job as a croupier; Blackjack and Roulette," said Martin, who also gave an insight of casinos, citing roulette 'top hatting'. "Top hatting is a group of three players; one of which will pretend to be drunk. Only experienced croupiers can spot them. They play the game, with 'distraction' being their theme in an attempt to win, by cheating," said Martin. After a spell in Bournemouth, Martin moved to Brackley, near Northampton: "I worked at The Rubicon Casino, owned by Monty Shine, a great bloke, who I spent eight months with," said Martin. Martin, who returned to a life on the ocean waves, with a position on the Royal Caribbean Cruiseliner, said: "I met a guy named 'Badger'. "Badger set me up with an interview - and I was on my way to Miami - aged 21! It was amazing. "Working in Miami paid 300 dollars a month - beer money - working seven nights. It was the tips that made the job worthwhile. $1,200 per week! "I loved clothes and shoes - still do - and went to Lacoste and spent $3,000. I splashed out!.

"Being English, the Yanks loved me, being one of the dealers in the casino. 90% of Yankee customers had never placed a bet before!. "They were 'crazy', asking: 'what time's the midnight buffet?!". Martin, a concessionaire, said: "As a concessionaire you could go anywhere on board the Cruiseliner - unlike the crew. If they were caught being somewhere they shouldn't be, it was instant dismissal." Martin had to pinch himself during his high lifestyle in Miami: "Can you imagine being in Miami - a kid from Salford - someone who had nothing, having left school with no qualifications? "I didn't care about school, I couldn't leave quick enough! I was spending $5,000 on shopping sprees. The happiest days of my life," "I then moved on again and joined the Cruiseliner The Sovereign of The Seas. The problem was that the casinos only opened when the ship was in International waters. "During my time on The Sovereign of The Seas, I visited Saint Thomas and Puerto Rico in the Caribbean, it was the only two stops. I lasted three months," said Martin. *IN PART 2 of Martin Ronald Dean's life as a Croupier, he talks about arriving at 'The White House!'; Neil Diamond; George Best; New York, Times Square, Broadway; Rome; Bermuda; Ernie Wise; Cuban-American singer, songwriter-actress Gloria Estefan. Earthquake causes panic in Lorca An earthquake of a magnitude of 3.8 was registered on Saturday evening at 10pm to the east of Puerto Lumbreras. The quake caused especial alarm in the municipality of Lorca, where, remembering the devastating seismic activity in the town 8 years ago, the city council is understood to have set up its Emergency Reporting Centre, with at least one house suffering material damage. The National Geographic Institute initially located the epicenter of the earthquake north of the neighboring town of Águilas, but later modified the coordinates and placed it in the Lumbrerense area, with a hypocenter that was 5 kilometers deep. The tremor was felt in the three locations as well as in Mazarrón, Cartagena, Pulpí and HuércalOvera (Almería) although there are no reports of personal injury.

PIGGOT PIPS DETTORI AS THE BEST Is Frankie Dettori the best Flat jockey ever - even surpassing the legendary Lester Piggott - in racing's Sport of Kings? "What a horse Stradivarius is - a horse for the big occasion - people love him," said Dettori, after completing back to back Gold Cup successes, having won the race in 2018. Help Vega Baja Charity Day in aid of ALPE on 20th June 2019 at Vistabella. On the 20th June 2019 Help Vega Baja held their inaugural charity golf day at Vistabella with all proceeds going to ALPE the centre for disabled children and adults in Torrevieja. Sapphire Properties were the main sponsors for the day although numerous local business sponsored holes and provided raffle prizes and our thanks go to all of our sponsors too numerous to mention in this short report. This year’s event was a best 2 from 4 team stableford and a total of 64 players in 16 teams took part in the event which was a shotgun start at 8.30am,so an early start for many players. The winning scores on the day were as follows: 1st – Team Britton – 92 pts, 2nd – Team Busters – 91 pts, 3rd – Team Vistabella ‘A’ – 90 pts, 4th – Team Lime Bar 1 – 88 points

Dettori had the bookies running scared on Ladies Day, after winning on A'Ali, Sangarius, Star Catcher, and Stradivarius.

Piggot, a living legend

Piggott was in attendance with HM The Queen at Royal Ascot last week, where a statue of him was unveiled, in recognition of his services to racing. Trainer Mark Johnston believes Dettori is on a par with Piggott, deemed one of the greatest Flat racing jockeys of all time. "On the big day, Frankie Dettori is special. No disrespect to Lester Piggott - a superhero - but to not call Frankie on the same terms would not be fair on him. He has been the most fantastic jockey for British racing," said Johnston. Dettori on a par? For me, Lester Piggott is the best jockey. Frankie, on this occasion, is the runner-up.

SPAIN BOXING LEGENDS THE Spanish Boxing Federation is based in Madrid, being part of the European Boxing Federation (EUBC) that governs the sport of boxing in all its forms within Europe, under the control and direction of AIBA. Spain is respected by the Boxing Federation, having played a role in the history of the sport, and being one of the founding countries that participated in the World Boxing Council (WBC). Ruben Martinez - dubbed a leader in Spanish boxing - was the first Vice President of WBC, and a former President of the European Boxing Union. Following Martinez's death, being a chief member of the Spanish Boxing Federation, it was seen as the decline of the SBF, leaving its affiliation to the European Boxing Union, and the WBC. Spain also withdrew from other boxing authorities and came under the International Boxing Organisation (AIBA). Spanish boxing heroes include heavyweight Paulino Uzcudun and Pedro Carrasco, the European Lightweight 1967 champion. Cecilio Lastra, who retired in 1982, EBU title holder, with a record of 39 wins, 24 KO, 13 losses and two draws, and Javier Castillejo, who won Championships belts for Lineal, WBC light middleweight, and WBA middleweight, are two famous Spanish born boxers that go down in history. Spain's Kiko Martinez, a former European and World Champion, from Daya Nueva, fought Josh Warrington in May 2018 at the First Direct Arena in Leeds, losing under controversial circumstances, for the WBC international featherweight title.

A rematch between Carrasco and Ramos took place in Los Angeles in 1971, with Carrasco losing his title. Las Ramblas Golf Society Results for w/c 17.6.19 by Peter Reffell Playing in his first game as an official new member, Graham Murray certainly made quite an impression (literally). He managed to hit our President, Dave Pulling, on the head with his approach shot to the 8th green! When asked if it affected his game Dave replied, ‘No not really, if anything it improved things’ (he wasn’t having a good day) The game was a ‘Change Partners’ and with a winning score of 85 points were John Shervell, Mike Chapman, Yvonne Phipps and the very talented, but fictional, Albert. Wednesday and by way of a change it was a straightforward Stableford. Just two 2’s today one of which I’m pleased to report was scored by me! (About time) the other one went to Tom Hardie. Winner on the day, with a handsome 39 points, was in fact Tom Hardie and he was closely followed by Andy McDonald with 38. In third place, on countback, was Bryan Neal with 34.

This week’s words of wisdom come from a certain Westbrook Pegler who observed, ‘Golf is the most useless outdoor game ever devised to waste the time and try the spirit of man’.

2nd place, Handicap 11, Paddy O'Brien – 38 points on C/B. 1st, Hcap 7, Alistair Douglas - 41 pts. If anyone would like to join our Society, we play at El Plantio Golf Club every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. In the Valencians semi final, Intercity beat UD Pucol by the only goal of the match. Their reward was a match against group 2 champions, Recambios Colon, which was played in Massanassa. Following a goalless 90 minutes, Intercity went on to triumph 4-3 on penalties, and now take their place in the draw for the next match in September. Until recently it looked odds on that Intercity would be changing their name to Intercity Benidorm, but the deal to amalgamate with CD Benidorm is now a nonstarter. Evidently, their fans and local San Juan (Alicante) council put pressure on the club to remain where they are, instead of doing a ´Wimbledon´ and shifting to another area, lock stock and barrel. This is very bad news for CD Benidorm, for their

board were banking on the financial input from the proposed deal. It now seems that there is a real possibility that they will not be able to continue in the Preferente divison, which would give Aspe (highest placed of relegated teams) an unexpected lifeline. One way or another, there will still be at least one Benidorm team playing Preferente div football next season, for newly promoted CF Calvari are based in the area. Elda Industrial and Idella FC (group 6 first regional) have merged, forming a new team named Elitei Project. More good news for Thader Rojales, in the form of 3 established key players signing contracts for next season. Captain Lloyd Dummett will continue leading from midfield for the 9th consecutive season. Geordie boy Lloyd is a firm fans favourite, as well as being a Newcastle FC fanatic. Fellow midfielder Rafa will be starting his 5th season with the club, having played more minutes than any other player last season. Prolific goalscorer Nino will be looking to continue in his role of target man, as he embarks on his 6th season for the men in blue and white.

Pizana back on home turf

Pinatar Arena has announced that it will be host at least a dozen British football teams in their preparations for the upcoming season during June and July. For a number of them, including St Mirren of the Scottish Premier League and Northampton Town of the English League2, it will be a first visit to the facility, while for others, such as Newcastle United, they have been regular visitors to Pinatar during recent years. However Nottingham Forest will be the first to arrive. They will be located at the 5 star La Finca resort in Algorfa from June 28 to 7 July. The double European champions will train at La Finca but they will play a couple of friendly matches at Pinatar Arena, on 2 July against Dundee and Peterborough Utd on 6 July. Next up will be St Mirren, from July 1 to July 8,

while Northampton Town will move in just as the Paisley outfit and Forest depart, from 7 to 14 July. Although St Mirren’s friendly fixtures are to be announced it is understood that ‘The Cobblers’ will shape up with games against Coventry City and Bournemouth Town who are also staying in the area. The Under 23 and the Under 18 squads of Newcastle will be using the San Pedro del Pinatar Centre from 4 to 11 July. Newcastle United, under Rafa Benitez, has already made a couple of winter trips to Pinatar Arena when they played Belgium side Antwerp and Russia's CSKA Moscow. More information will be provided in The Leader Newspaper of all the pre-season friendlies in the coming weeks.

new three-year contract at Albacete in 2015.

Hector Pizana was back home in Los Montesinos, staging his summer Football course at the town's Municipal stadium, that was well supported by the future stars in the game.

Hector, who made his Albacete first team debut against UE Llagostera in the Copa del Rey in September 2015, was promoted to the first team in Segunda División B during the 2016-17 campaign.

"The summer football school was excellent for the youth of today, who thoroughly enjoyed the training," goalkeeper Hector 24, told me.

Hector, whose contract with Alba ended in 2018, joining CDA Navalcarnero in the third tier, in July 2018, said: "The course involved tactical, physical, and cognitive skills - working through a comprehensive methodology."

Participants received a campus uniform football kit and Diploma in taking part: "The young players enjoyed the course, in learning how to improve their skills," said Hector. Pizana, who finished his graduation with Valencia CF, was on hand to educate both boys and girls, born between 2003-13, during June 17-21.
