A spokesman said that with the approval of the funding of 260,000 euros , allocated by the Coastal Agency, work will now be able to get underway to remedy the effects of the considerable damage caused by the storms on 19 March, particularly the collapse along the promenade at the Playa del Sardinero, where much of the walkway was washed away. The Chief Coastal Officer, Rosa de los Rios, along with the mayor, Jose Fidel Ros, and engineers from the Provincial Coastal Service, inspected to damage following the storms and have also authorized the construction of a breakwater to protect the area from subsequent damage. That work is scheduled to start within a month following the investment which we are told has now been included in the provincial budget of 3.5 million euros. Additional work that will be covered includes replacement of sand at las playas de las Villas and de las Higuericas as well as damage to the adjacent dunes and the wooden boardwalks leading down to the beaches Further along the coast, Cala Moraig, Benitachell will see the establishment of another breakwater with consideration also being given to the region around Santa Pola and Tabarca where the beaches were so badly affected at the time. In those areas thousands of tons of sand have already been allocated to repairing the damaged beaches.
SPAIN TRIPLES MEDITERRANEAN SEARCH AND RESCUE SPENDING Prime Minister Rajoy, highlighted the importance of the extraordinary meeting of the European Council on immigration last week, at which it "was agreed to triple spending on search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean". ?He explained that the Commission will publish a document in May to be debated in June, "to thus implement what logic and common sense dictates a joint immigration policy for all European countries, given that there is free movement of people in Europe, and hence, what affects one country, wherever it may be, affects us all". As regards the fundamental objectives of this immigration policy, Rajoy pointed out that "the most important thing must be to preserve the lives of people"; given the dramatic situation taking place in the Mediterranean. "This is something that the European Union cannot and will not allow under any circumstance", he explained. Furthermore, the Prime Minister underlined the need to be "effective against the mafias that take advantage of people and which, on many occasions, lead them to their deaths", and committed to improve living standards and cooperation with countries of origin. "It is clear that if people do not have the possibility of leading a dignified life in their own country, they will do whatever is available to them in achieving this, as is obvious and natural", he claimed. In his opinion, "the most important measures are to reach readmission
agreements with all the countries of origin and transit of immigration", which would be an "important step", because "to date, as a country Spain has some agreements in place, but not at a European Union level". He also committed to linking this readmission "to cooperation with these countries". Mariano Rajoy added that endeavours will be made to "reach agreements to work jointly with the law enforcement agencies of these countries, with a view to avoiding these situations arising in the future".

EL MUNDO SPORTS SEMINAR IN TORREVIEJA
The Torrevieja mayor, Eduardo Dolon, took part in a National Seminar entitled "The Impact of Popular Sports in Tourism" on Tuesday, held at the Real Club Nautico of Torrevieja (RCNT) and organized by the national newspaper El Mundo The seminar attracted a number of notable speakers including the 1988 winner of the Tour de France, and current TVE cycling commentator, Pedro Delgado; GermĂĄn Robles, President of the Foundation of Atletico Madrid; Fernando de Portugal, an executive with the Sports Event Company Last Lap, responsible for road race San Silvestre Vallecana which annually attracts over 30,000 competitors, and JosĂŠ Miguel Pina, Director General of the company Moonraker bikes. The mayor stressed the importance that the city of Torrevieja places on Sports Tourism which, in just two years, has attracted over 16,000 sportsmen and women from a multitude of different European countries. He said that Torrevieja has one of the best and most complete sports centres in the country, the success of which will always ensure that investment in sport continues to be treated as one of the most important features in improving the quality of life of its citizens. The mayor thanked Pedro Delgado for his contribution to the forum. He acknowledged the ex cyclist as one of the most successful athletes that Spain had ever produced. In response Delgado said that he was delighted to see that Torrevieja would be involved as a stage in the 2015 edition of the Tour of Spain, which, as concerns the level of tourist interest, will prove to be a
great showcase for the city worldwide. Torrevieja will launch the ninth stage of the Tour on Sunday 30 August, 168 km from the city to Benitachell. The previous day will see the cyclists arriving from Murcia. It will be a historic weekend marked by a great atmosphere. Inevitably there will be a major influx of visitors to the area, brought by the Vuelta itself, as well as the many thousands who will be in the city spending their summer holidays. The ninth stage of the race will be the only of the Tour 2015 that will take the cyclists into the Alicante region. Much of the route will take the cyclists along the Costa Blanca coastline showing off some of the very best landscapes in the country.

PAINFUL EXPERIENCE A man reportedly shot himself in the foot to discover what it would feel like. The unnamed 35-year-old man was admitted to hospital last weekend in Elda, near Alicante, and authorities believe the incident occurred because he was curious to know how painful a gunshot wound would be. The firearm that caused the wound has not been found by the authorities, who suspect the man of throwing it out of the window of a car on the way to the hospital. It remains possible the man will face psychological testing or being charged for firearm offences.
NO GO FOR ATLETICO A regional court has struck down a longstanding plan by the city of Madrid and the soccer team Atlético de Madrid to replace the Vicente Calderón stadium with skyscrapers. Under the plan, two 36-story residential towers would go up in an area near the Manzanares River where legislation establishes a maximum height of four floors. The developers’ idea was to use the money from the sale of the 2,000 homes to finance construction of a new stadium in La Peineta, a decaying site once envisioned as part of Madrid’s Olympic bid. Atlético was originally supposed to move this year; the deadline was then delayed to 2017.

Villena based firefighter Francisco José Catalán, a member of the Provincial Fire Consortium travelled out to Katmandu on Monday with eleven other members of the emergency response team ‘Bomberos Sin Fronteras’. The group were en route to Nepal where they are to join hundreds of other volunteers in the rescue activities following the 7.9 magnitude earthquake that caused thousands of deaths in the Himalayas. The party also includes two search and rescue dogs. Paco, as he is affectionately known, said that his family had asked him not to go because of the danger of aftershocks, but I told them It’s my job and the people out their need all the help they can get. ‘It is important that we get out there quickly with our specialist equipment and with the search and rescue dogs if we are going to have any real effect’ Paco said as he was en route to Barcelona Airport. So far, Paco has worked in humanitarian aid missions in the Dominican Republic where he worked with, and trained, local firefighters. He is aware that this mission is totally different. ‘I just want to get across there now and start work’. When they arrive in Nepal the team will be under the command of the United Nations (UN), who are coordinating the tasks to deal with the emergency. A spokesman for ‘Bomberos Sin Fronteras’ said when his organization made initial contact with the Spanish Government they were told that the country would not be providing manpower to take part in rescue operations and that all aid would be humanitarian. Therefore they decided to go it alone. Paco said that he is still confident of finding people alive under the rubble but speed is always the decisive factor. He says he does not know how long his group with remain in the area, but initially they had been told they would be required at least until 6 May when the situation will be reviewed. Amongst the humanitarian Aid to be provided the Provincial Council of Alicante have announced that they are to allocate 10,000 euros through the Red Cross for the supply of blankets, tarpaulins, plastic sheeting, jerry cans, and other essential items needed to overcome the lack of water and food, exacerbated by failed communication networks and power supplies. N332 AT LA ZENIA IMPROVEMENTS AGRED The councillor for the Orihuela Costa, Martina Scheurer, has announced this week that she has received the final go-ahead to carry out the work at the roundabout of La Zenia. Last year the Road Ministry in Alicante initially wanted to close off streets Maestro Torrabla and Alhambra to the traffic. Martina Scheurer as well as Antonio Zapata both went personally to Alicante on different occasions to discuss this matter and have insistently forwarded suggestions to avoid the closing of those 2 streets. Finally the Ministry agreed on the plans which will turn these two streets into a one-way access routes coming from the island on the N332. To achieve this, the parking spaces in front of Al Fresco will be turned into a green traffic isle. In the area opposite, following in line with the Taxi stand an area will be rehabilitated to create additional parking. On the other side of the N332 and in front of Deutsche Bank a so far missing foot path will be created to give continuity into the Avenida del Mar for pedestrians using the foot bridge.

WILL SO MEBODY BUY ORIHU ELA’S TRANSPOR T COUNCILLOR A BIKE? Spain are never content with being down the pecking order, a good example being the football team, for so long perhaps the very best in the world. And now it seems as though they are looking to climb up the European Table which records the number of cyclist fatalities by country, where in Europe they currently only sit at number ten. One sure-fire way, thought some bright spark on the Orihuela Council, is to put the cycle lanes down the middle of the road. That should do it! And that seems to be exactly what we have got. The photo sent in last week by Keith Daniels was taken in Avenida de Cabo in Cabo Roig. Perhaps the Councillor responsible for transport in the Region would be good enough to explain the logic in it’s placement.
COUNCIL AUTHORIZES SITE FOR NEW COLEGIO PLAYAS DE ORIHUELA Narrowing of Calle Alhambra to a one-way street will also give the possibility to change the line of parking spaces into an angle formation which will enable easy access and more cars to park. The work will be carried out by the company Pavasal, specialised in executing work for the Ministry and also being the most economic of the 3 existing offers at a price of approximately 46.000€. The amount will be financed by the Planning Department in Orihuela.
The Governing Board of the Orihuela Council has approved the transfer of the building plot from council to regional ownership for the proposed new junior school that is currently being prepared for tender as a replacement for the portable cabin complex currently accommodating Orihuela Costa’s junior and infant schoolchildren. The announcement was made on Tuesday by municipal spokesperson Carolina Gracia. The plot is thought to be the area of land adjacent to the Los Dolses Commercial centre, just across the road from the current school and presently being used as an overspill car
park. In her statement Gracia noted that since 16 March, the Ministry of Education has invited tenders for new colleges at Beniarbeig, Nàquera Burriana, Ibi, Almàssera, Rojales and Villanueva de Castellón totaling over 35 million euros, but it has still not opened the process for Playas de Orihuela. The current school has been in portable accommodation for over 13 years, by far the longest in the whole of the Valencian region. “We now hope that the situation and the tendering process will start

ORIHUELA ELECTION R OUNDUP BY RAYMOND KEARNEY What Orihuela Costa needs over the next 4 years is stable government. After 25 years of apathy and corruption followed by 4 years of political self-interest and incompetence there needs to be a change and your vote if used wisely will matter. There are 13 parties contesting the Orihuela elections this month. Each party of course will claim that they’ll win more votes than they will. The reality is that only 4 or 5 parties will achieve any seats at all. All of the other 8 parties will be eliminated. In the Spanish electoral system any party that receives less than 5% of the total votes cast are automatically eliminated and their votes are binned. This month’s vote is expected to be about 32,000, so any party receiving less than 1,600 votes will be eliminated. Generally parties that focus on local areas & issues do not have a wide appeal and therefore will not achieve the 5% minimum required. Claro for example is perceived to focus on one area of the whole municipality and as a result they will not receive 1,600 votes. The 3 small communist parties will certainly also be eliminated but there is a slight possibility that Cambiamos may achieve 1 seat.
The Orihuela Rotary Club played host to Ciudadanos member Ignacio Lopez Bas on Friday It is unfortunate that Pepa Ferrando, who was charged with corruption and expelled from the PP, has formed her own party “Foro Demócrata” and may actually get enough votes to win 2 seats. Ciudadanos (C’s) are likely to win 4 or even 5 seats. The PSOE who have caused such havoc in Orihuela for the last 4 years will likely get 7 or even 8 seats. It is strange to imagine that the party that has been most associated with political favouritism in the past is now the only party that has banned any person charged with corruption from appearing on the electoral list. This new clean PP is likely to receive 11 or even 12 seats. At this moment it seems unlikely that any one party will have enough seats to rule Orihuela so another coalition is inevitable. Over the next weeks we will analyze the parties, offer possible scenarios and make predictions for the future. Information on the author: Raymond Kearney has been deeply involved in Orihuela politics for the last 6 years but is not affiliated with any political party contesting these elections.

Open for 365 days of the year the Church of San Anton in Madrid has hauled itself into the 21st Century by recently embracing new technology. Introduced only last month it currently offers free wifi, live streaming of services from all over the world on wide screen televisions and a special confession App. Having recently been taken over by the Messengers of Peace Foundation, (Mensajeros de la Paz), founded and chaired by Father Angel Garcia, it also has a full program of social and cultural activities, including foster care, social assistance, a clothing outlet and even facilities for a bank. And not content with pushing technical boundaries, the church is also unique in welcoming animals, encouraging visitors to bring their two and their four-legged friends along to mass. It is also manned 24 hour a day by a group of priests, spread over several shifts, who are always on hand to administer sacraments of continuous mode. The aim is that it will always be a place for reflection and dialogue, a caring home to share and an oasis of silence and prayer. Father Angel, the driving force behind the initiative, said ".It hurts to find churches with closed doors. San Anton will always be open to anyone who needs help: for those who want to pray or confess, for those who need someone to listen, or who just required a hot coffee, indeed anyone who would like a warm drink. Visitors are welcome to stay for as long as they like, at any time of day. San Anton is a 21st century church, it has embraced modern technology in order to make itself as welcoming as possible, to parishioners both of the human and animal variety.” One of the priests on duty told us that the live-streams are mainly taken from the Vatican. They are supplemented by religious films and documentaries. One of the San Anton’s main technical features is an iPad app to help the deaf and hard of hearing go to confession. People now are able type out their confession on an IPad and receive a typed answer from the priest. This saves any embarrassment that they might be caused by having to shout. Father Angel said he was "very happy" because the project has the blessing and support of Carlos Osorio, the Archbishop of Madrid who was responsible for inviting in the Messengers of Peace Foundation. The Church of San Anton is popularly known because of its affiliation to animals which are blessed on 17 January, the feast of its patron saint. Such blessings, along with the social and traditional religious activities, will be further developed in the coming months.

THE PLANE TO SPAIN Four men from near Birmingham ended up more than 1,500 miles away in Malaga after a drunken night out in Stourbridge. The 23year-olds decided to go to Spain when the taxi driver asked them, "Where am I taking you?" on the way home. "It escalated massively," sales adviser Matt Weyman said. "We went back and picked up our passports, then went straight to Birmingham airport with just an iPhone charger between us."
NUCLEAR ENERGY
And as part of its determination to welcome everyone into the church, San Anton is thinking considering the introduction of a Sunday mass in English for tourists and residents in Madrid. With the recent acknowledgement that half of all Spaniards no longer practice their religion and one in five insisting that they are "confirmed atheists" perhaps the introduction of similar measures in other churches across the country will help reverse the dramatic loss of faith in what has always been known as a traditionally Roman Catholic Country.
India and Spain have agreed to advance negotiations on cooperation in nuclear energy, with Spain stating that it would support New Delhi's early membership of the four multilateral export control regimes. A statement said the intent was to further advance bilateral negotiations for cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.

Advance Moves reports on Spanish Housing Market Resurgence
www.yourlocalnewspaper.info
9
CARTAGENA CAT CULL DENIED The Department of Health of the City of Cartagena has asked the Cuatro Gatos association to help develop a management plan to look after five colonies of cats that have been living in the city since December 2012.
International removals company ‘Advance Moves’ has reported a resurgence in the Spanish housing market throughout 2014, and with continued growth forecast throughout 2015. The Murcia based removals company that is well known as the market leader in both the UK to Spain, and the Spain to UK removals sector, has seen continued strong demand for their household removal services between the two countries. It appears that with the UK housing market becoming continually more active and the added factor of the weakening of the euro against the strong pound, has meant a lot more UK residents have been able to sell up, and are coming to Spain where their pound suddenly goes a lot further. This, combined with the lower prices of houses within Spain from the recession has fuelled the market. But the increased workload for Advance moves has not stopped there, as many British expats and
Spanish residents who are now able to sell their houses in Spain are using Advance moves to move their effects to the UK. Advance moves have had to expand their fleet of vehicles both in their Spanish and UK depots to cope with the increased demand. It’s not just the increased activity of the housing market that has pushed up demand for Advance Moves removals services, Advance moves are the only Spanish removals company that are members of the British association of removers (BAR), the Road Haulage association (RHA) and hold a Spanish transport licence (Tarjeta de transporte). With highly trained staff, a fleet of modern vehicles and state of the art containerised and bar-coded storage facilities in both countries, Advance moves are set for another busy year. Further details of Advance moves services can be found at www.advancemoves.com or by calling 0034 968 65 4667.
A management plan must be submitted to the town hall within a month that must be drafted by a veterinarian trained in feline medicine and population management with experience in urban neighbourhoods, which shall assume the functions of management, veterinary care and supervision of the colonies. The plan must include a description of each colony, including the extent, location and boundaries, the number of individuals in each group and population control measures. An animal disease control must also allow for the identification, vaccination, worming, sterilization, without communicable diseases, as well as sanitary measures, covering the cleaning and disinfection of occupied spaces, support indicating the places where they are given to eat and clean, and road and public safety to prevent nuisance to neighbours and passersby. The Department of Health has denied that they are taking any measures to carry out an extermination program of the colonies of cats, which has apparently been reported in various media and social networks, but rather to provide a better welfare and health service to the cats, maintaining proper health and hygiene guarantees.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
Oil Slicks, Turtles and Lies During the last week or so, one major news story has hit the headlines and dominated the airwaves in the Canary Islands. It has led to fiery exchanges between politicians and environmentalists, with some evidence that a 'massaged' account of events was being released to the press from those who have a heavy investment in the tourist industry. Thankfully, there were others, including the environmental group, Greenpeace, who rapidly assessed the situation and gave a more balanced account of the crisis that is currently hitting the shores of these islands. A Russian trawler, the Oleg Naydenov, which was often denounced by Greenpeace for illegal fishing activities, caught fire in the port of Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. The vessel was carrying 1,500 tonnes of fuel oil, and the port authorities decided to tow it out to sea, about 15 nautical miles south of Gran Canaria, to let it sink and, presumably, to forget about it. The trawler is currently leaking between five and 10 litres of fuel oil an hour into open sea, and a robot submarine has detected that the wreckage is now located over two miles below sea level. Both the Spanish and Canarian governments are looking at plans to either remove the remainder of the oil from the sunken vessel, or seal the holes in the hull that are causing the leak; both will be difficult and
expensive operations. Despite initial government denials about the severity of the problem and a less than frank account at a news conference, oil slicks were spotted on Greenpeace satellite images off the coast of the south of Gran Canaria, with oil appearing on several beaches. Interestingly, the government has, so far, refused to release satellite images of the area for the public to see. As well as a being a major tourist area, the seas around the Canary Islands are rich in marine and bird life and already birds, turtles, as well an endangered loggerhead sea turtle have been found covered in oil. Greenpeace are currently monitoring the situation, and warn that the contamination could worsen in the coming days. With an eye on the tourist industry, government officials continue to play down the crisis. However, none of the beaches affected have been closed to visitors; indeed, I visited one yesterday and there was no sign of any pollution, although locals told me that council staff and volunteers had been there earlier in the day to clear away a small amount of oil. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but it seems that the government's decision to tow the fire stricken, fuel laden Russian fishing boat into open sea and let it sink may not have been the cleverest, or most environmentally friendly decision it could have made. In their defence, government sources claim that the decision to tow the trawler out to sea was to avoid the burning vessel contaminating the water desalination plant nearby. The Spanish government has now announced an enquiry into the issue, and to consider what could have been done to avoid the catastrophe. Many are comparing the current issues with the oil spill from the Prestige oil tanker in 2002, when 60,000 tonnes of oil poured into the sea off northern Spain. A few months ago, many islanders were con-
Russian trawler, the Oleg Naydenov cerned about the exploration for oil and gas that was taking place off the Canary Islands. Fortunately, the findings were of insufficient quality or quantity to develop commercially; the price of oil fell and the project was terminated, at least for the time being. Although the current spill is minor in comparison to the Prestige oil tanker disaster, it does serve as a warning of what could happen should, one day, oil exploration and extraction resume off the coast of these beautiful, and environmentally rich islands. SPAIN DRAIN 30% of Spaniards think that humans once lived alongside dinosaurs, according to the latest Social Perception of Science survey whilst a quarter of Spanish people believe the Sun revolves around the Earth, and not the other way round. A further 11.5% disagreed that humans are descended from animals. However, the startling results are still an improvement on 2006, when almost half the population thought dinosaurs and humans had co-inhabited the earth, and 40% thought the sun orbited us.

DOCUMENTS HANDED TO ORIHUELA ARCHIVES The ecology group Pro-Río has handed over 30,000 documents to the Municipal Historical Archives. The Councillor of Culture, Rosa Martinez and the Pro-Río Segura Commission President, José Antonio Muñoz Grau, signed the agreement on Monday donating all of the documentation that has been gathered over many years to the Municipal Archives "It is all part of our history, united people all fighting for a common cause", said the councillor.
EMIGRATING BRITS Over the past five years, the USA and Australia have leapfrogged Spain as the preferred choice for Brits moving abroad and our land of choice is no longer the most popular destination for emigrating Brits. From 2009 to 2014, just 52,000 Brits headed to Spain, down 124,000 on the previous fouryear period. In comparison, 207,000 Brits upped sticks for a life down under, while 80,000 have taken the trans-Atlantic route in search of the American Dream.
Muñoz Grau has said that in addition to photographs, leaflets and posters, he had delivered four boxes full of documentation, and there are still another two to be brought across. "This heritage is not ours, but of all the people of Orihuela," he said when making the donation. According Muñoz Grau, it comprises of everything that was published in Spain and Europe pertaining to the Segura River from April 1998. He also delivered a pen drive with over 5,000 documents bringing the number to 30,000 in total. The spokesman of Pro-Rio also appealed to other residents who might have additional material to bring them all in so they might be kept together

BUMPER START TO MAY
Figures for the Easter period already showed positive signs for a summer which will benefit the tourism industry; now the holiday weekend of May has echoed those results. The weekend coincided with the Labour Day holiday on Friday, Madrid day on Saturday, Mother´s Day on Sunday, UK Bank Holiday on Monday, and the start of Torrevieja´s May Fair later this week. The DGT had anticipated a busy weekend on the roads, expecting 4.7 million trips on the roads, a 4% increase over last year, with most of the movements being concentrated around the coastal areas. Queues were recorded in the exit routes from major cities from Thursday afternoon and into Friday. A total of 885 flight operations were scheduled during the holiday weekend at Alicante-Elche airport, with 236 scheduled flights alone on Saturday. According to AENA, 150,000 travellers have
passed through the airport during the holiday weekend. On Friday, two cruise ships docked at Alicante, “Horizon” and “Thomson Dream”. The 208 metre “Horizon” docked with 1,828 passengers and 618 crew on board, and the 243 metre “Thomson Dream” carried 1,500 passengers and 615 crew. Although on a smaller scale, Saturday saw the “Saga Pearl II” arrive in Alicante, carrying 446 passengers and 252 crew.
INSTAGRAM WINNER RECEIVES DIGITAL TABLET Victor Sarabia has won the Instagran Photography Contest that was held by Orihuela Council over the Easter period with one of the snapshots that he took during the procession of the Brotherhood of Silence (la procesión de la Hermandad del Silencio.) Throughout Holy Week participants were invited to upload their photographs to the council’s Instagram site which resulted in over 450 submissions from in excess of 100 entrants.
The first 20 photos were selected for prizes and for special mention by a board of judges which included the Councillor for Tourism Rosa Martinez with the first prize of a digital tablet awarded to Victor Sarabia at a ceremony conducted in the Maria Moliner Library in Orihuela. "The goal was to raise awareness through social networks of the Easter celebrations in the area from the perspective of those who live in Orihuela", said the councilor.

Europe Presents Immobilisation Plan in Excessive Alcohol Cases The European Commission has presented plans that will facilitate the implementation of devices that block vehicles from starting if it detects that the driver has consumed alcohol. The plan extends a mechanism that already applies to drivers punished for drink driving in three member states, and the plan is now to implement the measure across the continent for all drivers. The code will come into force on the 15th of May in the Netherlands, Finland and Sweden, with the commission insisting that it is for each member state to decide whether or not to implement the system. The initial aim is to prevent re-offending drivers who have been punished for driving with excessive alcohol in their system but have not lost their license. Belgium, Germany and Denmark are already preparing their own legislation in line with the changes, whereas the system has been adopted in France already, but only for drivers of school buses.

HELP SAVE KIDS LIVES Between the 4th and the 10th of May, many countries around the globe will celebrate the Third World Road Safety Week, which this time the United Nations has dedicated to children. Worldwide, some 500 children die every single day in traffic related incidents, whereas in Spain, the DGT report that in 2013, 46 children under 14 years of age were killed in road accidents, 410 were seriously injured and 5,502 suffered minor injuries. During the campaign in Spain, under the banner “Salvemos a los niños”, children are encouraged to
join in with various awareness activities, supported by the adult population, to promote such safe practices as wearing seatbelts, including in buses, wearing helmets and keeping safe and visible on the roads, whilst also encouraging awareness in adults of similar attitudes, including eliminating alcohol consumption for drivers. A hashtag has been created for social network sites, which is #SaveKidsLives, and all children can participate by signing the Child Declaration on the website, www.savekidslives2015.org as well as participating in a share a selfie campaign, which has been nicknamed with the hashtag #safie.
VOLVO TO MAKE CYCLING SAFER
NEW GUARDIA CIVIL VEHICLE PARTS CONTRACTS AWARDED The largest tyre manufacturer in the world, Bridgestone Corporation, has been awarded the contract to supply the Guardia Civil motor pool with tyres for the years 2015 and 2016, in a deal valued at 6.55 million euro, according to information published in the Official Gazette (BOE). The company, which was founded in 1931 in Japan, was named after the founder, Shojiro Ishibashi, translated his surname into English and found it to mean “stone bridge” in Japanese. Spanish leading distributor of parts and services for industrial vehicles, Automotive and Industry, the company Europart Hispano Alemana, or EPHA, will also take over the supply of batteries, in a contract worth a total of 666,905 euro.
A new product developed by safety conscious car manufacturer Volvo hopes to revolutionise road safety by enabling better visibility for more vulnerable road users. “The best way to survive a crash is not to crash” is the tagline that accompanies Volvo LifePaint in its promotional message, and the best way of avoiding being hit is to be seen. LifePaint is described as a new reflective safety spray which is invisible by daylight but glows brightly in the glare of car headlights. LifePaint washes off and can be applied to clothes, shoes, helmets, pushchairs and of course bikes. Although it was designed for cycle safety, it can be used in many other situations where better visibility might mean the difference between life and death. It can also be integrated in a fun way for children to not only become more visible, but also have fun whilst staying safe. Echoing many road safety campaigns around the globe, the company make the bold statement that by 2020, their vision is that no person will be killed or seriously injured by a new Volvo. A bold statement that they hope LifePaint will go some way to achieving.

ROCK ON A senior military source has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is lining Gibraltar up as an alternative base to the Clyde which would mean the Rock becoming the new home for Britain’s nuclear submarines. SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon wants to rid Scotland of Trident but both the Conservatives and Labour have said they want to retain the base on the Clyde, however moving the nuclear deterrent to Gibraltar would cost £3 billion and take a decade to complete.

FIND A COOLER SOLUTION WITH R&R CONSTRUCTION
As the summer sun melts most of us away, we might forget that there’s a simple solution to cooling down in the heat, the installation of air conditioning. But with so much choice around how can we possibly know who to turn to, when all we want to do is relax and cool down? There’s a simple answer to that question; we simply turn to a company with a proven track record, specialists in what they do and who clearly focus on quality. One such company is R&R Construction who have been established and operating for the past 11 years, where many have come and gone, they still have that proven track record that shows they can give us what we want. But what about the quality angle? Well, again, they satisfy that criteria too. If we think of quality motor cars, tools, watches or cookware, we might think of Germany as the epitome of quality. We might also read in the news how German engineering and business are leading the way in Europe. The installers at R&R Construction are all German trained taking that quality standard into your home with every installation or repair that they carry out. They have a wide range of brand new units, all the latest standard in quality and efficiency, all models with A1 classification for energy efficiency, which not only goes toward your home’s energy certification, but also saves you money when it is running. The reason R&R Construction recommend the A1 units is that they give rise to a 40% reduction in energy bills in comparison to the older units and therefore will ultimately pay for themselves with the savings in your energy bills.
These units still come with a two-year guarantee and can be fully installed from €495. As for routine maintenance, R&R Construction do that to. It is essential that once a year the filters and gas levels are checked, a cost of just €40. This is just a general overview of the services and units on offer. R&R Construction are always more than happy to talk to you about your own, personal, options so all you have to do is give them a call for good deals and a no nonsense approach. Not forgetting, as their name suggests, R&R Construction also carry out general building and maintenance work, so if you find anything wrong you know the solution – Call R&R Construction on 662 088 965 or see their main ad on page 3. You can be sure they will get it right. Email: randr-construction@hotmail.com

A HAT TRICK OF TITLES FOR SPANGLES Spangles Ladies’ Harmony Chorus has done it again: for the third time in succession, they have become barbershop champions of Spain, gaining their third gold medal. Led by Musical Director, Gail Grainger, the chorus travelled to Benalmádena, Málaga to compete on Saturday, 18 April. Spangles first won gold in San Pedro del Pinatar in 2011, then again in Benalmádena in 2013. Choruses are not allowed to compete in the year following a win, so their next chance of a medal was at this year’s convention, organised by the Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers (SABS). “We are all delighted with our third championship win and I am especially proud of the chorus, because this was my last assignment as Musical Director of Spangles and they pulled out all of the stops” said Gail, who returns to live in the UK in May. “I couldn’t have wished for a better farewell”. Gail joined the chorus as Assistant Musical Director in January 2008 and took over the role of Musical Director in September the same year. Since then, she and her management team have worked tirelessly to ensure that the chorus continues to improve and move forward. Starting in 2004 with just five ladies, the chorus now boasts more than 40 members and continues to grow. The past year’s hard work paid dividends in Benalmádena, with Spangles sweeping the board, not only winning the contest, but scoop-
ing up the trophies for highest scores in singing, presentation and music. “This couldn’t have been achieved without the specialist coaching we received and the dedication of each and every member of the chorus to achieve excellence” commented Gail, who hands over her baton to two joint chorus directors, Dawn Ritch and Wendy Grant, who will be supported by the Assistant Musical Director, Liz Lewis. “I know that I am leaving the chorus in good hands and I look forward
to watching their continued progress from afar.” Spangles welcomes new members so, if you’re looking to make new friends and enjoy singing, why not visit Spangles when they rehearse at Las Claras? They meet every Thursday from 10.00am to 1.00pm. Please call Lyn on 968 574 987 or Anthea on 968 334 527 to book Spangles or to find out how to join, or visit the website: www.spangleschorus.com.

By Sheila Cammack. San Luis 3-2-1 tournament 25th-27thApril. All the matches were hard fought through the group stages, with the outcome of some groups going to the last match. Also weather conditions changing rapidly on Sunday afternoon threw the proverbial “spanner” in the works. The winners of group A: Brian Zellin, Sue Kemp & Janet Gatwood, played off against group B winners: Steve Simmons, Sabrina & Russell Marks, with Russell’s team going through to the final. Group C winners; Ann Holland, Ray Pollock & Phil Morrachan were closely matched against Group D winners, Kath Reid, Colin Jackson & Mal Hughes. After all the disciplines, shots & ends won they were still all square so they played a 1 end trips “shoot out”. It looked a certainty for Mal Hughes until Phil's last wood took the jack through to go 2 up and in to the final. However in the final Russell's team defeated Phil's team. Thanks to Keith & June for the organising, Frank & Kath for the raffle, and all the competitors and spectators for making it a success. Yarolslav Shvedova, ranked 56 on the WTA, Sorana Curstea, former number 20 and Akgul Amanmuradova, current 193, were all in Torrevieja last week using the clay courts at Tottevieja Tennis Club where they have been preparing for European tournaments in Madrid, ome and at Roland Garros. the Triples. Overall shots Herons 56 (2 pts) Vikings 106 (10 pts). Finally we ended the week with our first home game on Friday, 1 May when the Badgers entertained the Emerald Isle Vulcans in a SABA Harrier league match. After some enthralling bowling it was honours even at three wins each, but the Badgers picked up the two extra points by winning the long game.
EL RANCHO BOWLS CLUB In a light bowls week, El Rancho recorded their first win of this league against the Horadada Hawks by 8 points to 6, with a shot tally of 108 for El Rancho against 104 for the Hawks. The team of Margaret and Ron Odell with lead John Cleal had the best result of the day, recording a 28 shots to 7 victory. The other wins were Maureen and John Newell sandwiching Rob Clarke to a 20 shots to 16 win and Malc Elmore leading with Graham Day and skip, the outstanding (guess who wrote this) Stewart Hamill winning by 19 shots 15. The losing rinks of Jane Hamill and June Whitworth skipped by Richard Needham, had a calamitous 3 ends, dropping 10 shots but only lost by 6. Likewise Merv Armstrong, Jim Gracie and David Whitworth dropped 8 shots in three ends to loose by 4 shots. The last rink of Graham Hicks, Malc Sykes and Brian Taylor had a "bad day at the office" suffice it to say they only won 6 ends but no doubt things will go better for them next time. THE MEMBER’S GOLF SOCIETY AT VILLAMARTIN 29TH APRIL Today marked the last of the early starts for us at this Championship course, which for most, will bring a little normality to their day’s golf. It’s well known that in high season, visitors must begin at tee 10 before 10.04, members have preference from tee 1. The 10th hole is not really the one that you want to begin your round on at 9am! the avenue of trees always seem to be narrower at that time of the morning and that’s before it dawns on you that the out of bounds is lurking to the left, then you realise that the swimming pools, of those beautiful properties that line that side of the hole, are just waiting to devour your golf ball! Wait a moment, just 40 meters to the right is the water hazard that travels the length of the fairway, oh well; I’ll just blob this one! The course is in excellent condition, the greens looked slow but were deceivingly fast, hence the cries of, another 3 putt, seemed to be quite common later in the club house. The day’s best scores came from the Gold category with Tove Roed edging John Eyre into 2nd place on lower handicap with both returning an excellent 37 points, 3 points further back came Paul Fairclough on 34 points and just making the prizes this week was Dag Lovas on 32 points. The top two in the Silver category were decided by just 1 point and Roger Nilsen must have been delighted that he managed to advance his appointment at the hospital this morning to arrive at the course just
in time to tee off. (yes he was the one who blobbed the 10th) but that didn’t stop him from scoring a very credible 35 points, that was just one point ahead of Alex Goslan, back in 3rd place was Shelia Dean on 31 points, with another lady member, Sandra Twentyman taking 4th place with 30 points. We did have a few visitors join us this week so there were 2 prizes up for grabs, this happened to be a family affair with Alan Cuddihy’s Son, Chris, beating his father by some margin, Alan 29 points and Chris 35 points. In every competition for an extra euro, members can enter the “2’s” contest; it was won this week by new member Sandy McGee and Les Wilton, not a bad return, a tenner for a euro! The N.T.P.’s were sponsored by the Captain, John Eyre, who just happened to be the nearest on the difficult 17th, Hole 6 went to Alan Cuddihy, Raymond Eiken was closest on the 13 and Les Wilton on hole 9. Abbey Angling Match Results By A Reid The Seventh Round of the Spring Series was fished at the Embalse Ojos “Blanca”. Once again this venue lived up to its reputation in name, proving very hard to fish, even the bleak were few and far between on this visit. Top weight on this visit came from the first peg to the left of the incoming stream. 1st: Lenny Bolton with 8.800kgs. fishing paste and corn on the pole. 2nd:Dave Hutchinson with 2.960kgs.fishing paste and corn on the pole. 3rd: Bill Reade with 2.420kgs. fishing pellet corn on the pole. All details are available from our website www.abbeyangling.com or from the Match Secretary Terry Screen on 965328368. New members are welcome. RODS & REELS The 2nd round of the Summer Series was fished at “El Bosquet” on the 29th of April. The fishing at this venue is beginning to pick up now that the water temperatures are rising, a varied variety of fish are being caught including eels, mullet, Carp both Common and Mirror and also Barbel. A lesson learned on this visit was to put some form of barrier between you and your elasticated end tackle when retrieving it from snags. One member had to pay a visit to Hospital to have pieces of pole float removed from his leg. 1st Neil McBirnie with 16.660kgs. fishing pellet on the pole. 2nd Ron Salisbury with 10.980kgs. fishing corn on the pole. 3rd Clive Cleghorn with 9.240kgs. fishing pellet and bread on the pole. There are still some vacancies at the club and if anyone is interested in joining please contact Derek Swann on 966729293 or 603535771. TIGHT LINES

Should be a real block busting finals this Thursday at the Celler after last week´s semis left 3 finals known, Triples, Pairs and Ladies Singles with the Mens Singles down to the last four. Some great players will be contesting silverware at the outstanding Cabo Roig venue in a couple of days time. Several players are doubling up in the finals, Pat Abrams in the Singles and Triples, Nick Spicer Singles and Pairs, also John Eyre in the Singles and Pairs. All are capable of taking two titles, but which one will do it? I am sitting on the fence with this one but
Triples Finalists Simon Williams, Joe Miller, Joe Hawkins

take it from me the Singles will be explosive and well Mens Finalists John worth watching. Eyre, Pat Abrams, Nick The evening kicked off with a new discipline, the Spicer, Alex Nikolov Triples. Simon Williams, Joe Miller and Joe Hawkins challenged Peter O´Rourke, Ray Harvey and Paul Dowington for a finals place in the opening match. It was a little subdued Hawkins taking the first on D10, Miller the main scorer. It was a similar scenario in the second, this time Williams finishing the 701 on D20 for a 2-0 score line and a final place. Harvey did his best to rally his side with some consistent scoring but just not enough. The second semi was livelier between the two Meerkats sides. Abrams 85 Lee Maiden 120,98 and Paul Durrant 121 and 78 to leave tops, Del Kingsbury 125 and Alex Nikolov 85 scoring most of the 701 for Maiden to take out D8 for the first leg. A further ton from Kingsbury and a 133 from Nikolov put pres- self settled with steady scoring of her own, culminating in the finishsure on their compatriots but Abrams came to the rescue with ing double for a 2-1 result. 140,100,85 Maiden 81, Durrant setting up tops for Abrams. He sub- The Mens Singles quarter finals concluded play, the favoured players sequently missed the out, Maiden following somehow leaving 5 mur- enjoying the luck of the draw by avoiding each other. Current singles muring something like “he had to go for it”. Durrant found the single champion Abrams opened proceedings against the well supported 1 and D2 for 2-0, their future opponents Hyenas in the way of the main Kestrel John Lane who started well but couldn’t take advantage of Abrams´ indifferent finishing, which cost him dearly as the Meerkat trophy. The Pairs were played in a “round robin” format due to the went one up after a 120 and then battered the T20 in the second with Breakaways duo unable to attend. Dowington and O´Rourke faced 125,100,114 (to leave a double). All credit to Lane who didn’t buckSpicer and Eyre in the first which was a real sizzler. O´Rourke 85,125 le under the pressure, with 3x80+ himself to leave a shot. Abrams had Dowington 140,100 and S16,D16 really took the wind out of the fan- left 14 which he chose to finish on S10,D2 much to the chagrin of the cied Hyenas duo, whose reply of 140 and 85 reasonable but not audience who had given their support to Lane. 2-0 for the Meerkat enough. Unfortunately the Busters pair couldn’t maintain their first and one step closer to retaining his title. The Ale House was repreleg standard, their opponents plenty of 80+, Spicer a 123 were suffi- sented by Kelvin Angel in the next, Nikolov his opponent. 2x100 and cient for Eyre to level on D5. The same man concluded the match on 2x80+ from the Aler put the Meerkat on his back foot, but Angel 100,D10, Spicer ensuring the win with a 140 and 131. Busters couldn’t convert the double. Nikolov took advantage of his opporemained on the oche to play Eagles Brett Badlove and Stuart Clark, nent´s slip and duly took the first on D16. 3x100 and 1x80+ from the Bulgarian looked like an early exit for Angel, but he dug Dowington taking the first on D19, then a 125 and D16 for deep and rescued the leg on D10 much to the delight of the second, both Eagles giving a reasonable performhis fans. A further two tons from Nikolov seemed ance but not enough scoring to reach the double. It to knock the stuffing out of the amiable Angel as was totally different in the next where the the Meerkat took the decider to progress to the Eagles remained on stage to face Spicer and semi final. Meerkat captain Del Kingsbury Eyre. Badlove 85,125 was backed up by oversaw the draw and somehow picked some solid scoring from Clark, Spicer 100 Spicer as his opponent. Del Boy! In the 100 and 125 both leaving a double. second leg the favourites looked dead and Spicer requiring 32 hit D7 first dart and buried as Badlove 100, Clark 125,100 D9 second to go one up. Kingsbury no battered the lipstick, Hyenas response of slouch himself opened with 2x100 and an 100,100,137 just enough for Eyre to level 85 in the second, anticipating a decider. with a 67 check out on D16. The scoring in Spicer was having none of it and finished the the third was all 80+ but no tons, Spicer find501 on D10 after an 83 and 125. The last ing D10 for a 2-1 victory but wobbly knees. Great game of the night featured Mark Filer (Busters) game! Ladies Finalists Simone de and Hub Hyena John Eyre. Maybe it was the late Alex Nikolov Building Services has supported the Lacy and Leah Chesworth hour but Filer just couldn´t get into his usual stride, Ladies Singles for the past couple of years and has Eyre taking his chance duly planting his arrow in D8 for continued this term. The draw pitched both Sporting Life the opener after a nice ton. Two further tons and an 80+ seemed to girls in one semi and both Junction Jaguars girls in the other. I think its fair to say all four ladies didn’t perform to their capabilities, prob- kill off the lacklustre Buster Eyre taking full advantage of the situation ably nerves getting to each. Former champion Sonya Cooper faced taking out 58 in two on tops. Each of these courses were part of a golf resort complex, designed by world renown course architects and with ambassadors such as Johan Cruyff. These courses were designed to be almost self sufficient and green by recycling water from the urbanisations to re-use on the golf courses. Sadly as the urbanisations were under populated there was insufficient water to keep the golf courses in tip top condition which in turn reflected on the numbers playing the courses and ultimately the financial bottom line, sadly leading in each case to closure. Have you ever thought what happens to a golf course when it closes? Last week I was in the area of La Tercia and called in to see the developments over the last two years. The magnificent clubhouse is still in good order but looks lost and forlorn The aqua driving lake is empty but for a few dregs of water rain water. The chipping and putting greens next to the clubhouse are completely overgrown and show no signs of ever being well prepared areas. Standing on the first tee was eerie because the 'vista' down the hole was of any natural waste land with no signs of the well manicured fairways, aprons, greens and bunkers that previously existed. May be with an upturn in the world's financial situation perhaps a bank somewhere will re-develop the course as an aid to selling the many properties and apartments that border the old course. EUROGOLF SOCIETY AT LA MARQUESA
On Thursday 30 April 54 members of the Eurogolf Society competed for the Ken Wilson Memorial trophy in a fordmed competition. Ken was an active member of Eurogolf for many years and served on the committee as Captain in 1991, 1992 and 1998. As the fordmed name implies the first nine holes were played as a Stableford competition and the back nine as a medal, then the Stableford score taken from the net medal score to arrive at the final result. Some good scores today but a special mention to TOFF’s organiser Alan Venables winner of the Ken Wilson Memorial trophy with a magnificent 14 points Full results were as follows: Gold Division: 1st John Barraclough 19 pts c/b 2nd Malcolm Foskett 19 pts 3rd David Gregson 21 pts Silver Division: 1st Alan Venables 14 pts 2nd John Holland 17 pts c/b 3rd Dave King 17 pts Bronze Division: 1st Eamonn Devine 16 pts c/b 2nd Claire Daye-Gretton16 pts 3rd Alec Relph 16 pts Best front nine Gloria Manning 19 pts best back nine Ian Turner net 32 N.T.P’s 5th Mike Gillett 11th Alan Venables 15th John Holland 17th John Barraclough

LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY We started the week with a best 2 of 4 with all scores counting on the Par 5's. On the first tee I was left a bit disorientated wondering whether I was standing correctly as my three playing partners were all left handers. It mattered little as we ran out winners with a score of 94 pts. The team comprised Nick Campbell, Dave Pulling, Peter Dunn and Mike Chapman. Nick had a particularly good round with 8 pars and a birdie and was well supported by the rest of the team. The runners up with 93 pts were Geoff Biggerstaff, Bryan Neal, Peter Jenkinson and 'Albert'. It was the fourth round of Joker Eclectic Stableford competition on Wednesday where one hole on the back and front nine is selected to count for double stableford points and the best score on each hole over five rounds is aggregated to arrive at the players overall score. Prizes are available on the day for the top three places in each category as normal. In perfect weather conditions it was no surprise that scoring

SUCINA GOLF SOCIETY La Manga (West Course) A new course for us this month. Choosing an Individual Stableford format combined with a Team game of " best 2 scores" to count, 36 players arrived at La Manga West Course on a very overcast & windy day. The weather certainly played its part, but despite that some good scores were obtained. Most players opting for Buggies and were probably pleased they had made that choice, as we were held up by slow play from two 4 balls playing in front of the Society and it proved to be a very long round. For some a record of 5 hours 45 minutes!! The course was in very good condition and very interesting, although buggy paths are in need of attention. The par 3's proved tricky - all being uphill, long and into the wind! Feedback from players was mixed but most found the course challenging especially as the wind got stronger. The fairways are very narrow and tree lined so many a ball found its way among these along with the water and gully hazards! Presentation was to have taken place in the club house at La Manga but only the first team back in were able to purchase a well earned drink as the bar had closed by the time the other groups returned. Therefore, everyone returned to Franc & Louise bar in Sucina where the results and prizes were given out. Winning results are: Division 1 - Roger Major, 36 points, Division 2 - Peter Robinson, 35 points and Division 3 - Gary Smith, 30 points. Team results: Winners - Ray Banks, Mike Harding, Ron McKinley & Gavin Naismith with 84 points. Runners up - (on count back) Gordon Hutchinson, Jackie McVicar, Paul Whelband & Richard Davenport. NTP winners - Hole 2, Richard Davenport, Hole 4 Christine Comber, Hole 7 Sophie Ekberg, Hole 13 No winner & Hole 16 Ron Mckinley.
By Mike Chapman was good with Liz Robertson scoring an exceptional 45 pts to win Category One. The winners on the day were as follows: Cat 1. 1st Liz Robertson 45 pts 2nd Lindsay Forbes 42 pts 3rd Olga Douglas 41 pts. Cat 2. 1st Mike Chapman 41 pts 2nd Barry Holtham 40 pts 3rd Joyce McClusky 38 pts. 2's Club: Dave Pulling, Alan Douglas, Ken Robertson and Lindsay Forbes Rod Doel was leading the competition by some ten points going into the round but that has now been cut to one point with Barry Holtham and Mike Chapman moving to 63 pts with Rod now on 64 pts. Friday saw the start of our Singles Match Play competition with the initial rounds being played on a group basis with the top two emerging to compete in the knockout stages. Consequently there are too many matches to report on individually but the stand out result came from Lindsay Forbes who went on a birdie fest and won his match by 7 and 6 continuing his excellent form over recent weeks.

TORRY RALLY TO CLAIM A POINT CD TORREVIEJA ..........1 CREVILLENTE .............1 Torry started their home match against Crevillente in 10th place, whilst their derby rivals sat 1 place and 3 points higher up the table. With only 3 games remaining, qualification for the play offs looked very much an improbability for Torry, while their visitors were still rather better placed just 4pts behind fourth-placed Orihuela. It took 2 attempts for the reverse fixture to be concluded, following an almighty downpour forcing an abandonment of the original match last November, with both sides eventually settling for a 1-1 draw. Sunday’s return fixture at the Vicente Garcia was an equally tight affair with both sides quickly closing down each other at the first sign of any opportunity. The hosts enjoyed huge swathes of possession but struggled to break down a resilient Crevillente outfit, and on the balance of the first half, the visitors perhaps deserved to go into the half time break with their noses in front. The only goal came just prior to the half time interval, a low, dipping drive from Lolo, which an outstretched Oscar just about managed to get his fingertips to. It was the only real opportunity of an otherwise lackluster half which ended with both Jorge and Borja seeing yellow as Torry lost their way following the Crevillente goal. If the visitors shaded the first period the home side certainly had the
upper hand in the second as Pedreno’s men soon settled into their passing stride. There was much more urgency from Torrevieja as they dominated for long periods. Unfortunately they were unable to turn it into chances as the visitors again set themselves up to make life difficult for the hosts. But Torry were back on level terms on the hour mark after a clear handball in the box. A tremendous penalty from Rafa under pressure, despite the ridiculous antics from Nacho in the Crevillente goal. He sent the keeper the wrong way to give the visitors the point they undoubtedly deserved. A late yellow for Cristian, his second of the game, took the gloss of an otherwise decent performance for Torry which sub Corella could have made even better had he not spurned a glorious opportunity in the dying minutes, heading wide from an unmarked position. But in the cold light of day the result did nothing for the promotion prospects of either team and in the case of Torry, now completely out of touch of the playoffs, they have nothing really left to play for but position and pride. The Torry Army hope to be taking a coach to the last away game of the season at La Nucia, on Sun 10 May. This will incorporate a visit to Monroe's restaurant in Benidorm, and can be booked through Pat on 966 78 6352.

LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL FOR ELCHE CF BY KEVIN RENDALL After months of uncertainty, a chink of light can now be seen at the end of the long, dark tunnel Elche Club de Fútbol has been staring down for month after month. Having resisted the pressure to step down as club president by means of bare-faced lies and obfuscation, José Sepulcre finally fell on his sword last week, before leaving the Martinez Valero stadium glum faced and without saying a word. His resignation paves the way for long time protagonist, Valencian businessman Juan Anguix, to elect a new Board of Directors and take over the running of the deeply indebted club. Mercedes Alonso and Jose Sepulchre
PARTY TIME AT THE MARTINEZ VALERO ELCHE CF .........................................4 DEPORTIVO DE LA CORUÑA ..........0 No, seriously, that really was the final score ! In a season with rather too many disappointments, both on and off the field, Elche dispelled the gloom with a scintillating performance that belied their position near the foot of the table. It was one of those nights where the more the team did the more the crowd, who have been magnificent all season long, got behind them which, in turn, lifted the team to further heights. Granted, the opposition – they call them 'Super' closer to home – weren't up to much but Elche still had to play, and beat, a direct relegation rival. And didn't they just ? Barely twenty thousand were present, the 10pm kick-off time on a school night saw to that, but those that made the effort were given an absolute treat. Had Lionel Messi done what Uruguayan full-back Damián Suárez managed in the fifth minute, the football world would have been in raptures. Picking up the ball outside the Depor penalty area, he strode forward to beat three lukewarm tackles with a display of twinkling feet that far better know South American would have Damian Suarez was outstanding for Elche

been proud to lay claim to. His final contribution to the opening goal was a deft cut back for manof-the-moment Jonathas to make no mistake with from close range. Nerves duly settled, Elche doubled their lead a quarter of an hour later, this time via the penalty spot. Visiting centre-back Lopo fell foul of referee Xavier Alvarez with a non too subtle shirt pull that saw Enzo Roco also go tumbling. David Lombán stepped up to do the business; picking the opposite corner to the one goalkeeper Fabricio chose. With no further goals in a somewhat one-sided half - Depor were deeply disappointing not super Elche went in at the break a couple up, on a high and fully expecting more goals. That was exactly how things turned out. Within ten minutes of the restart, Elche notched their third. Inattentive defending saw Jonathas home free and, more to the point, onside. You'd have put your house on him scoring but, instead, his weak shot looped up off the feet of Fabricio and headed goal-wards where Chelsea loanee Mario Pasalic was handily placed to nod the ball over the line. With fully thirty five minutes remaining the result was in no doubt, the fans knew it, the players knew it and so too did Depor. In any other match, the amount of chances Elche created and the managed to squander would have been criminal, they were all over the visitors. It mattered not. The fourth and final Elche goal eventually came late on and was missed by getting on for six thousand people who had already left. They missed a good one. Cape Verdean international Garry Mendes, who probably deserves more game time than he actually gets, picked up the ball deep inside the Elche half and simply kept on going. Approaching the Depor box with the solitary visiting defender backing off, he chose to ignore the men either side of him and, instead, drilled a left foot shot passed a well beaten Fabricio. This victory, Elche's tenth of the season was easily their best and all but guarantees their La Liga safety. So poor are the teams beneath them, a single point from their remaining four matches might not even be necessary. Finally, a reward for the fans and, in particular, Fran Escribá after an, at times, fraught season.
The announcement Sepulcre had just become ex-president was made by Elche mayoress Mercedes Alonso who attended the meeting of majority shareholder the Elche CF Foundation as representative of the city. For weeks now, Alonso had been trying to broker a deal between the recalcitrant Sepulcre and his nemesis, Anguix, even going as far as attending a meeting with the Spanish Professional Football League (LFP) to fight the club's corner. With results on the pitch appearing to go the way of the club and the possibility of dropping down a division to the Segunda A slowly receding, another ominous threat recently loomed large. An unpaid tax bill of five million euros is already overdue and must be settled immediately to avoid the LFP imposing an “administrative relegation” on the team. Once a new football club board has been elected, the first task of Juan Anguix will be to keep the promise he made to settle that bill immediately upon assuming office. An additional three LFP actions against the club for outstanding transfer fees, unpaid wages of both former players and the present squad will then be the next troublesome issues to resolve for the incoming board. At the start of April the players and coaching staff refused to carry out any non-playing tasks in protest at non payment of their wages for the previous two months. With all this simmering away in the background it is, perhaps, remarkable that first team coach Fran Escribá has been able to motivate his team to produce the required results in their relegation fight with last Wednesday evenings 4-0 success at home to Deportivo de La Coruña, their penultimate home game of the campaign, virtually guaranteeing their survival. Now it is down to club bosses to persuade the powers that be Elche CF has turned over a new leaf.
