THE HIDDEN FACE OF THE ORIHUELA COSTA While the Orihuela Costa continues to attract retirees and visitors to the region in their thousands, as they come to enjoy the award winning beaches and some of the very best golf courses in Europe, there is another side to the municipality, one that is kept well away from the glossy magazines, brochures, web-
sites and tourist information materiel that draws the potential residents and tourists to the area, a face that is not quite so idyllic. Orihuela Costa Associations warn of 81 abandoned sites
Resident’s Associations that are working on behalf of the inhabitants of the coast, that of cleanliness, waste disposal and the abandonment of countless green areas, many of them actually owned by the local council.

The Federation of Associations of Orihuela Costa (FAOC), which represents the largest number of coastal residents, has carried out a thorough study, during which it has found a total of 81 plots of land that are lying completely abandoned and where the City Council is failing to comply with its own ordinance, which obliges the owners, at the very least to fence and keep the plots clean. In situations where this ordinance is not adhered to and the plots are not maintained in an acceptable and safe condition, the authorities are then entitled to carry out the necessary work and to pass on any bill to the owners. Unfortunately, with 11 of the 81 abandoned plots belonging to the Orihuela Government, the likelihood of them taking any action against the owners is improbable, to say the very least, inaction that presents an appalling image of one of the main tourist centres on the whole of the Costa Blanca, and all the time the council continues to spend hundreds of thousands of euros on the attendance of it’s councillors and it’s staff at travel fairs across the whole of Europe and in the printing and publication of travel literature that fails to tell the whole story about the areas that it is promoting. FAOC says that it has sent the results of its study to the City Council, distributed to the departments of Urban Planning, Heritage, Health as well as the Councillors of the Coast, for their comments and observations. They have given the council a period of 3 months to
answer and to act on the upkeep of the 81 plots. FAOC President, Tomás Moreno, is heavily critical of the council, demands their immediate intervention, especially on the lots that they own. He says that many are turning into dumping ground, where debris is deposited without any form of control with the subsequent attraction of rats and many other pests that are constantly making the lives of local residents extremely unpleasant. It is patently clear that many of the lots have not been cleaned up for years, bringing into serious question the safety and the health of those people living in the immediate vicinity. And what makes the situation even more laughable is the approval given by the PSOE in November of a modification to the Municipal Ordinance Regulating Urban Cleaning, Cleaning, Sanitation and Urban Waste Management, to speed up the procedures that allow municipal action and shorten the deadlines for the cleaning and fencing of such plots. With both National and Municipal elections now scheduled for April and May perhaps electors will think seriously before casting their vote, for what has shown to be a desperate government with, seemingly, little concern for the 30,000 people who live on the coast. Many people say that it is time for all of us to shake off the Orihuela Costa disease of apathy that sees too many voters simply roll over time and time again. The coast must stand up to bad politics and, if nothing else, unite to create, at the very least, a massive scare campaign, and perhaps the wakeup call needed for those who sit in Orihuela’s ivory towers!

Corvera to open Mallorca route MURCIA’S INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT continues to increase the number of its destinations with a new route to Palma de Mallorca, which will be operational in time for the summer. This will increase the number of desinations to 23 destinations in six different countries: the United Kingdom, Ireland, Belgium, Norway, the Czech Republic and Spain. Eight airlines currently operate from the airport: Ryanair, easyJet, TUIfly, Jet2.com, Norwegian, Smartwings, Volotea and Titan Airlines. The services provided by Titan Airlines are charter flights to London (Stansted). Corvera airport has also said that it will open its new ‘duty free’ facilities this week, a further improvement for outgoing passengers. To date, the airport has processed more than 35,000 passengers and 310flights since its official opening on January 15. CONNECTIONS UK: London (Stansted), London (Luton), London (Gatwick), London (Southend); Birmingham, East Midlands, Leeds (Bradford), Manchester, Bristol, Bournemouth and Glasgow (Prestwick). Belgium: Brussels (Charleroi) and Antwerp (Deurne). Ireland: Dublin. Spain: Asturias (Oviedo) and Palma de Mallorca. Norway: Oslo, Bergen, Stavenger and Trondheim. Czech Republic: Prague and Brno On Wednesday the authorities carried out a mock air accident at the airport. As part of its territorial plan with the Murcia authorities now assuming command of the emergency. In San Javier it was the Commanding Officer of the General Air Academy who
assumed command because it was situated on a military installation. The simulation was organized by Aena with the assistance of the General Directorate of Citizen Security and Emergencies, which is responsible for activating the Territorial Plan for Civil Protection within the Region of Murcia (Platemur). The scenario saw a plane with 50 passengers and five crew members lose the nosewheel, skidding off the runway after landing. This exercise simulated an emergency in which a typical commercial aircraft was involved, with action from the airport's media and groups from outside involved in the management of a real emergency. These type of drills must be done every two years. The day saw the participation of Aena, Civil Protection, the municipalities of Murcia, Torre Pacheco and Fuente Alamo, Murciano Health Service, firefighters of the City of Murcia, Civil Guard and National Police, as well as the Red Cross. The objectives of the simulation were to practise and improve the coordination between the emergency services to facilitate the actions in case of a real accident; strengthen the management of emergency plans and reduce response times, as well as to improve knowledge of the facilities and co-ordinate joint work between different emergency services.

CABO ROIG’S BIG PARTY SUMMER IS ON ITS WAY, but in Cabo Roig, the first is not the swallows returning from their winter migration but the annual Saint Patrick’s Day Parade. In addition to the parade this year there will be a craft market in the car park beside the Medical Centre on both Saturday and Sunday, a Wild West Show across at The Depot as well as FREE face painting dotted up and down the strip. Those who arrive early will probably get parked around La Regia Park opposite El Gato, on the side streets of La Regia, and in old Cabo Roig near the beaches, but don’t leave it too late as the spaces will be filled up very quickly. Remember, on Saint Patrick’s Day everybody is Irish, no matter where you are from. The festivities will begin in earnest at 1pm with a big shoot out at the Depot although many people will forgo the gunfight to get themselves seated by 2pm on the terraces of the bars and restaurants around the two-kilometre parade route. The best spots are usually found at the medical centre end of the “Strip”. As Saint Patrick’s Day falls on a Sunday this year there will be FREE face painting for children aged between 0 and 100. You can have shamrocks or tricolours painted on your face or your forehead from 1pm in three different locations, between Milo’s and Peter Pan’s, near Banco Sabadell and over the road at the Depot. It is reported that Anna and Elsa from Frozen will be doing some of the face painting in person. This Saint Patrick’s Day Parade is the 9th to be held in
Cabo Roig and it has become world famous, so famous in fact that it is the best in Spain and mainland Europe and the 9th best in the world according to Mister Google. 2019’s parade will be bigger and more spectacular than ever before. We may even get moved up to 8th place after this year’s parade as there will be more dancers, more floats, more activities, more cartoon characters, more bands and much more fun. Some think that the parade “Just Happens,” but it doesn’t, local businesses contribute their time, talents, efforts and 15,000€ to make this fun event happen every year. They run fundraising events all year around to build up the kitty so as this happy day can be a reality for the very nearly 10,000 spectators that attend the event. Probably the most vital person in running a successful Saint Patrick’s Day Parade in Cabo Roig is Sofia Alvarez, councillor for Tourism and also foreign residents in the Orihuela town hall. Each year she organizes the necessary permissions, police assistance, barriers, advertising, some performers, posters, scarfs, stage, seating etc. Without her help and support the Parade just wouldn’t happen. This year’s Grand Marshall is world-famous Irish Boxer and film star, Big Joe Egan, originally from Ringsend in Dublin. Once called ‘the world’s hardest man’ by Mike Tyson a full bio on Joe will be printed in a special newspaper for Saint Patrick’s Day and the Irish Pub and Grub Crawl. This free newspaper will be available in all the best places from 4th March.
Brexit causes alarm in Tourism Sector In 2019 British tourism on the Costa Blanca has got off to an extremely slow start, weighed down, as it is, by the negative effect of Brexit that has been translated into a reduction of 15% in British bookings for next summer. According to Nuria Montes, secretary general of the hoteliers association Hosbec, as a result of the fall, alarm bells are now beginning to ring in the sector. Montes remains cautious however, noting that the fall contrasts sharply with the forecasts of airline Jet2.com which already has high season flights on sale to Alicante-Elche, forecasting growth of 8% with a total of 1.4 million seats, 110,000 more than last year, between Alicante and nine UK cities: Leeds, Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Belfast, East Midlands, Newcastle Birmingham and London-Gatwick. However, the most worrying fact is the sharp drop in actual holiday bookings during January, one of the strongest months of the year, with only 46,000 packages sold, in comparison to the 54,000 in January 2018, which represents a reduction of -15%. The Balearic Islands follow the same trend as the Costa Blanca while the Canary Islands have completely confusing data: Gran Canaria falls by 7%, while Tenerife grows by 4%. Meanwhile, competing markets, like Turkey and Egypt (which are not part of the European Union) show a sales growth rate of over 40% for the summer.

Compensation for Cala Mosca could be as much as 100 million euro The Orihuela coalition government, has done absolutely nothing to protect or support the interests of its coastal residents over the Cala Mosca affair
The estimate of 30 million euro is part of a report requested by the Environmental Committee of the Cortes (the Congress of Deputies and the Senate). However the report signed by the deputy director of Territory and Landscape, Vicente Domenech, does propose two alternatives. One would be an agreement between the developer and the City Council to transferr its use (urban development) to other areas in the municipality, maintaining the economic equilibrium of the operation. The other raises the possibility of setting back the building to the area in front of the N-332,
THE GENERALITAT has estimated the compensation that would have to be paid, if it were to declassify the 450,000 square metres of land at Cala La Mosca, at a minimum of 30 million euros. It says that the estimate is extremely conservative as it only evaluates the financial outlay of the company in respect of roads, drainage, pavements and electrics, all of which were installed in 2007 before the plan was put on hold. There is no quantification of the loss of earnings that will need to be added, and that the company would certainly demand, for losing the opportunity to develop the coastal plot with capacity for some 1,500 homes. Loss of profits could then increase the amount to be repaid from the public purse to well above one hundred million euros.
distancing it from the coast itself allowing much more of the coastal landscape to be retained. While any decision is unlikely to entirely satisfy the wishes of either party what the residents of the coast do find particularly disappointing is the continued apathy and lack of any engagement by the Orihuela government, made up of the Popular Party and Ciudadanos coalition. In all the time that the matter has been a significant environmental concern to many thousands of people, with demonstrations and protests taking place on almost a monthly basis, the coalition government has not lifted a single finger to support, safeguard or to defend Orihuela Costa’s situation or to protect the interests of its coastal residents.

FOUR ASSAULTS ON CIVIL GUARDS IN ONE DAY
García Rogel, Avenida de La Vega and Calle del Río.
It was a tough weekend for the Guardia Civil in Torrevieja with four officers needing medical treatment in a single day. The assaults on the officers were highlighted by the police union AEGC which once again criticised the government for a lack of equipment.
There are currently two further charging points on la calle Fuego de Aguamarina (by the Cabo Roig Centro de Salud) and in la avenida Paseo del Mar, in La Zenia.
A union spokesman said that officers in Torrevieja, one of the busiest police posts in the country, should be equipped with pepper spray and extendable truncheons in order to deal more effectively with such attacks. The civil guard was called to deal with a case of gender violence that ended with the assault on one of them and a local police officer on Sunday. There was another altercation with two individuals of Polish nationality who assaulted two more agents on the same day and a fourth officer was injured in a fight as he tried to make an arrest. All these aggressions occurred in a single day which the Spanish Association of Civil Guards (AEGC) says highlights the lack of means of self-defence equipment carried by its officers in Torrevieja.
During this first year their use will be free of charge for those with electric vehicles, after which the price will not exceed 5 euros per recharge, according to Fernández , who says that 2% of vehicles in Orihuela are already electric. 'BRUGAL CASE' TRIAL TO START ON 5 MARCH

However we are told that there may be just a glimmer of hope that the 50 year old restaurant could be saved.
Dolón said he will continue to "fight" for the introduction of the order to protect "El Tintero” so that visitors and future generations can continue to enjoy this Torrevieja landmark.
The date was agreed by the court on Tuesday following a meeting with the defences and has now been notified to the 34 accused defendants, including the former PP mayors of Orihuela Mónica Lorente and José Manuel Medina, as well as the millionaire businessman Ángel Fenoll.

The mayor added that the process was not begun, however, until after the concession was withdrawn, which does not make things easy.
The Seventh Section of the Provincial Court of Alicante, which has moved its headquarters to Elche, has confirmed that the start date for the Brugal case, relating to alleged fraud in the Orihuela urban waste contract, will get underway on 5 March.
The councillor said that the first phase will have five new charging points, at a cost of 22,000 euros in the Avenida Doctor

Torrevieja Mayor, José Manuel Dolón, has also spoken about the situation saying that the owners now seem to have exhausted all judicial processes, but he has also said that the city council has initiated a procedure for an amendment to the General Plan that will protect the building and which has now been communicated to Costas. He says that the council is waiting their response.
NEW ELECTRIC CHARGING POINTS FOR ORIHUELA
Orihuela’s Councillor for the Environment, Miguel Ángel Fernández, announced that five new recharging points are to be made available for electric vehicles in the city. These facilities are being installed as a result of a subsidy to Orihuela from the IVACE (Valencian Institute of Business Competitiveness), aimed at the installation of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles, within the "Energy Savings and Efficiency in Transportation" Program.

PROTECT YOUR FAMILY FROM FUNERAL COSTS WITH A FUNERAL PLAN For British citizens living in Spain, buying a funeral plan helps your loved ones cope with unfamiliar procedures, language barriers and funeral costs. It’s probably the last thing on your mind when you’re planning your new dream lifestyle in the sun. But it’s something that you need to think about, sooner rather than later. An Avalon funeral plan lets you make important decisions and pay for your funeral in advance, so that you leave your loved ones with happy memories, not financial worries. Here are four reasons why buying a funeral plan should be on your to-do list when you move abroad. MAKE IT EASIER FOR YOUR LOVED ONES WHEN THE TIME COMES Arranging a funeral for a loved one is a distressing experience at the best of times, but when you’re in a foreign country and may not be fluent in the language, it can become stressful and confusing. There are also cultural differences to consider. In Spain most funerals take place within 48 hours, putting pressure on your loved ones to pay their respects and make all the arrangements in a very short timeframe. SECURE THE COST OF FUNERAL DIRECTOR FEES When you die abroad, your assets may be frozen and become harder to access for your family to pay for the funeral. When you buy a funeral plan, the Funeral Director fees are pre-paid making the process easier when the time comes.
USE THE PLAN IN BOTH SPAIN AND THE UK With Avalon, your pre-paid funeral plan can be enacted in the UK or in Spain, so you’ll still be covered wherever you are. GET SUPPORT FROM A 24-HOUR BEREAVEMENT LINE When the time comes, your loved ones can use Avalon’s 24-hour bereavement line to find out what to do next. With British operators based in Europe, you won’t have to worry about language barriers. Find out more about Avalon’s range of European funeral plans on www.avalonfuneralplans.com or book your free no obligation home visit today, call +34 671 935 072 or email: marketing@avalonsl.es
We also wish to thank the Reef Band Campoverde and The Emerald Isle for their support & everyone for their kind generosity supporting Community Care Association. We look forward to seeing you at our events in March, the 6th Dinner show at the Emerald Isle, 8th International Women’s Day Coffee Morning at the Drop In Centre and in the Parade at Cabo Roig on St Patrick’s Day 17th March. If you want to know more about the Drop In Centre Social Activities, pop along any Monday or Wednesday afternoon, you can find us at CC Ramon de Campoamor, Calle El Cipres, Lomas de Cabo Roig (the Library/Reading Point) or email oc.communitycare@gmail.com

‘Letters from the Canary Islands’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper.
He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
SHINING THE LIGHT The Canary Islands are often rich in public announcements and presentations to the press, but whether well-meaning projects will actually happen is quite another matter. Over the years, I have attended many lengthy press conferences, and often with impressive audiovisual presentations from earnest members of island governments, city mayors and experts about exciting and imaginative plans for the

development of these islands. Sadly, there are now numerous abandoned projects that litter my ‘Intending Projects’ folder, which include an island railway, a futuristic spaceport and a Chinese Village, to name just three on my list. Sadly, these are merely dreams that have disappeared into the ether, which I doubt will never actually come to fruition. The impact of the recession and a changing political landscape are usually the main excuses deployed when the authorities are questioned about their failure to deliver. Still, they always provide an interesting story and a photo opportunity. Does it actually matter that they will never happen? Probably not; after all, in time, these projects will be forgotten.
holidays in Gran Canaria. It is one of the oldest lighthouses in the Canary Islands, as well as the tallest masonry lighthouse. This lighthouse is still in operation, and now regarded as a Site of Cultural Interest. It was originally built by the Las Palmas Port Authority, and designed by the famous local engineer, Juan León y Castillo. Building started in 1861 and took 28 years to complete, since all the building materials had to be brought by ship. The lighthouse shone its first light in 1890 to help ships on routes between Europe, Africa and America. The tower is 58 metres high, and was first illuminated in 1890 to guide ships crossing the Atlantic Ocean with its light that could be seen for 19 nautical miles.
Cynicism aside, I was delighted that the much discussed and planned renovation of the Maspalomas lighthouse finally happened this week. Known to the locals as ‘El Faro de Maspalomas’, this building finally reopened to the public after a ten-year delay, which this time was blamed upon the activity of termites; well, that’s a new one.
The building now houses an impressive exhibition of five hundred years of island history, showcasing island products, culture, as well as the island’s rich and varied landscapes. The lighthouse now includes a tourist office, handicraft shop and an ethnographic centre that tells the island’s story from the Fifteenth to the Twentieth Century, the aboriginal era, as well as writings from travellers who passed through the Canary Islands.
Looking at old maps and photographs of these islands always fascinates me to see that the south of Gran Canaria, as we currently know it, did not exist. There were only small clusters of fishermen’s dwellings on the coast.
The Maspalomas lighthouse now houses an impressive exhibition of five hundred years of island history

It was the lighthouse that stood proudly over barren land as the most significant building in the south of the island. Later, thanks mostly to European Union funding, the current network of roads and tunnels were built that allowed remote parts of the island to be connected, followed by the rapid development of the sun-drenched tourist resorts that we see today. This lighthouse appears in nearly all brochures and publicity material relating to
The duties of the lighthouse have now shifted away from guiding ships crossing the Atlantic to boasting a new shining light that enhances lighting of the walkway in the evenings along the Meloneras seafront. It is a route taken by thousands of people each day who wish to enjoy magnificent ocean views, shopping, restaurants as well as magnificent sunsets. The light of this impressive building continues to shine brightly, as well as now sharing its story. doubts have been cast - when returning to the winner's enclosure with a leg injury, having stitches inserted to a cut in the back, left leg. In winning Henderson said: "I was very, very surprised. I've done very little serious work with him." Ahead of a scheduled tilt at the Triumph Hurdle, jockey Daryl Jacob said: "He's still a bit keen, but jumps super. A nice horse for the future." Nicholls, who has a plethora of his stable stars heading for Cheltenham, was giving little away, saying: "Horses have been running well - hopefully we can continue. One winner is good. Anything else above that is a bonus." The Leader tip Enrilo (6-5), trained by Nicholls and ridden by Harry Cobden, was a winning selection at Kempton. Irish trainer Willie Mullins' Cheltenham festival raider Presenting Percy runs in the Gold Cup without a race under his belt. Quesada Bowls Club What a glorious week for bowling! Very pleasant conditions and some unseasonably high temperatures for February. There have been some very hard matches for the Quesada squads - some that have impacted the league positions. But there’s still a few weeks to go, so plenty to play for. In the South Alicante Winter League, Quesada Pearls played San Luis Trekkers who won the match 8-4 and 98-88. Unfortunately this means the Pearls have slipped to 4th in the league but only 2 points behind San Miguel Beagles so hopefully a good win next week will see them back in 3rd. The Diamonds suffered their highest loss of the season at home to leaders San Luis Klingons. San Luis won on all 5 rinks with 103 shots to Quesada’s 49 and won the match 12-0. Quesada Rubies also had a bad day with a defeat by Greenlands Maples, who won 12-0 and shots 127-63. Results in the Southern League included a win for Quesada Swallows against San Miguel Bulldogs. The Swallows won the match 8-4 points and 84-75. A different story for the Swifts however, playing rivals San Miguel boxers. Although there were some close matches on some rinks, San Miguel boxers
by Dee Stephenson
played extremely well and walked away with all 12 points and shots 108-64. This defeat means the Swifts will slip to 4th place in the league and now leave themselves a lot of work to do to try to catch up. Finally in this league, Quesada Swans also lost to La Siesta Golds, who won the match 8-4 points but Quesada won the shots 88-79. In the Winter league, Quesada played host to Benitachell in an incredibly close and competitive match resulting in a draw, 6 points each and the shots were 87 Quesada and 85 BBC. This performance means Quesada are now in 4th place in the league. Meantime, in the Federated 4’s, Quesada Panthers played San Luis Condors in another close match, which the Panthers won 6-2 points and 53-47 shots. Just a reminder that we welcome both new and experienced bowlers. We’re a friendly club with a mixture of competition, league and casual players. In addition to league matches and Club competitions we have our popular Saturday morning chicken drive which is open to visitors, and we have free coaching for new members. So come along and see what we have to offer! Angie Goddard newleaf2014@hotmail.co.uk

stances and should only consider the quality of their own shots and be proud. In the afternoon the Mustangs entertained a strong San Luis Lions and played some fine bowls in some close matches, although one or two of us might be disappointed with our play today. But our older bodies don’t always behave as they should and we still enjoy the game and company. But the final score wasn’t bad against the Lions, who played well; the Mustangs took two rinks and had a shots deficit of just ten. Meanwhile the Broncos were at Quesada against the Swifts and put in a good show in taking two rinks, always a good result away from home. I think we can sum this week up as a disaster for Horadada! On Monday we were away to Monte Mar Torreadors and although we were playing in lovely weather, the sunshine didn’t help our score. We only won on one rink and that was: Irene Graham, John Goddard and Sheila Westwood 15 – 11 The final score being 61 shots for to 84 against, giving us 2 points to 10 against.
The Falcons really need to concentrate on the last 5 matches, 3 of which are at home so we have no excuse. It is our advantage so let’s use it. On Friday the Royals were away to La Manga. That is the end of that report!! I believe our captain used the word Massacre. It is an experience playing at La Manga being the only grass surface. All

Mike ProBert talks golf Golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike on the Costa Blanca and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER discounted golf prices to all of our readers. Flag in or Flag Out? In recent articles we have described the numerous changes to the R&A rules of golf for 2019. These rule changes include the removal of a penalty for hitting the pin when on the putting surface and so now the player has the option to putt while on the green with the flag in the hole and of all the rule changes this is the one that appears to have caught the interest of local golfers. As a low handicap golfer my higher handicap society partners consistantly ask me which is better, flag in or flag out and there is no single answer to this because it is a matter of personal preference. This issue has raised it's head on the main PGA tours and for instance Bryson Dechambeau has decided that his preference is to leave the flag in the hole for all putts. Me personally for very long putts I choose flag in because I find it easier to gauge the distance to the hole with the flag in position but for shorter putts I take the flag out because to my eye this makes the hole appear bigger. I always remember a saying that my father used to say when I was a junior “a flag in never helped a good shot”. So you can see there are arguments for both options and I am sure that each player will work out which is best for them. In conjunction with the flag in,flag out debate the new rules encourage playing 'ready golf' which is only good for the speed of play BUT I have noticed an increased number of occasions where my higher handicap golfers are 'moving' while fellow players are trying to play or even hitting shots while other players are in the process of hitting their shots.

February sunshine provided ideal conditions for The Plaza Golf Society visit to Vistabella. 30 players competed but one in particular fell a little short and heads off to practice ahead of our next event so good luck with that Bob Rankin scoring a lowly 17pts! The 2's pot saw some familiar faces picking up 15 euros each, well done to Liz Sully, Colin Wilson, Dodgy Declan Crowley and Callum Hitcham. Nearest the pins sponsored by The Plaza Society again featured some usual suspects namely Callam x 2, Colin Wilson, Phil De Lacy and a new name with Margaret Woodhall not only hitting one but achieving the best Ladies score of the day with 36 pts off 30 handicap. We had two guest prizes today and in 2nd place was Daniel Spino scoring 31 pts off 7 losing out comfortably to Mike Willetts scoring a great 38pts off 14 and who becomes a full playing member from now on.
A couple of players have caught the attention of the handicap secretary so watch out at our next event at Hacienda Riquelme 08.03.19 where there are still some places available - log onto our website www.theplazagolfsociety.com to register for this and future events.

La Marina Golf Our first visit of the year to BonAlba resulted in a glorious day weather wise ,but the same could not be said of the scoring which, for the second competition running ,produced well below average returns. However, some members did perform well ,and top score in the Gold section went to Captain Bill Stobo with 32 points. In the Silver section the award went to octogenarian Bill England with a magnificent return of 35 points. Like a good wine he seems to improve with age!! Nearest the pins went to Geoff Ettridge, Jeff Boardman ,Danny Divers and guest Paul Hayward. The TWO'S pot was shared by Danny Divers and Alex Leach. Many thanks to Helena at the La Marina Sports Centre for providing us wth Paolo's tasty homemade pizza and fries after the game. Our next meeting is at Font Del Llop on March 7th, first tee 10.00

Whilst most agree that the course has a great layout, you are never quite sure in what condition it is going to be found, its best months coming a little later in the calendar year. Today fairways were reasonably good but the greens were not at their best. The obvious presence of weed grasses didn’t help. The bunkers also need more sand.
Silver Category: 4th Phil de Lacy (29), 3rd Mike Kaylor (30 on CB), 2nd Steve Hart (30 on CB) and 1st Alan MacDonald with 34 points.

Monday’s team game was two scores from four to count but with all to score on the par 3’s. With a nice round figure of 100 points, our winners were Dave Pulling (he’s starting to make a habit of this), Nick Campbell, Marleen Billen and Reg Akehurst. They even managed to get round the course without losing a single ball between them! (that must be one for the record book). An early contender for this week’s ‘Senior Moment Award’ has to be Olga Douglas. Now, we’ve all walked off a green at some point and realised a club or two have been left behind; but a whole buggy? Olga was however back on the winning trail when we played the second round of our ‘eclectic joker stableford’ on Wednesday. With 40 points she just eased out Pat Cassidy who scored 39. Third place went Peter Jenkinson with 38 points. Two ‘2’s were achieved on the day, one by Olga and the other one by John Shervell.
a.m at a cost of 50 Euros when we will be playing for the Helena and Paola Trophy. List is on the notice board as usual or contact Alan Craig on a100ac@yahoo.co.uk. A quick tip here from Terry Field’s Golf Manual. ’If you want to reduce your score by eight shots just miss out one of the par threes!’ Onto Friday and we played a two ball ‘Texas Scramble’. Apparently the last time this was contested was seven years ago! Terry Field and Nigel Price took Gold with a nett score of 66.75. Hot on their heels were Donna Campbell and Dave Pulling with 68.75.

Battling Torry crave that elusive victory Benferri CF ..........................2 CD Torrevieja ......................1 Sometimes life´s just not fair, and when you´re down nothing seems to go right for you! This statement is so appropriate for Torry in their present predicament, for try as hard as they may, those all important 3 points seem a long way off. Nine matches to be precise, and to make matters worse, next up at Nelson Mandela stadium, is a visit from run away leaders Inter City San Juan. There was some good news off the field though, in the shape of a resignation letter from president/treasurer David Cruz. Hopefully the remaining board members can now concentrate in saving the club, from not only relegation, but also from ceasing to exist (if rumours circulating are to be believed!). Torry were more than holding their own
up to the half hour mark, before a cross from the left by Jordie found Jose Luis at the far post. His powerful header gave keeper Cristo no chance, leaving Kiko Lopez young side once again having to overturn an early deficit. Benferri almost doubled their lead 3 minutes later, but Cristo did well to block Abellan´s accurate The Torry shot. Referee Gracia lineup at spotted a handball in Benferri the hosts penalty area on 39 mins, leaving Torry sub Juanmi the opportunity to smash home the resultant spot kick. Just before the interval, Pena almost scored for the hosts, but his firmly headed effort hit the bar, before bouncing out of play. Torry had battled for every ball, more than justifying a half time departure at all square. After the restart, Torry were dominant, almost scoring within only 2 mins courtesy of a fiercely struck shot by Thales, which Roberto did well to save. They were controlling midfield, and in Thales
had a player who was in the thick of everything. But alas, as so often has happened this season, they just couldn´t convert that all important 2nd goal, eventually paying the consequence. A long shot by Jordi on 76 mins was turned around the post by Cristo, then from the resultant corner, an unmarked Jose Luis was at hand to head it home from close range. In the time remaining, Torry gave it their all, but unfortunately that all too familiar negative sight on the scoreboard, signaled yet
another defeat.

Carp-R-Us Fishing Carp-R-Us started their Spring Series in Spring-like conditions on the Eden stretch of the Rio Segura. The water here is very low, not flowing and covered with a green scum, it badly needs an influx of fresh water to improve the fishing. First was Roy Dainty with 1.70kg from peg 13 caught on sweet corn fished using a straight lead over bred crumb. Second was Alan Smith (peg 6) with 1.05kg caught using pole and bread. Third was Jeremy Fardoe with 0.95kg from peg 12 and fourth was Tom Marshall with 0.90kg (peg 11). Further information about the club can be found on its website www.carp-r-us.weebly.comor on our Facebook page Carp-R-Us Fishing Costa Blanca.
SUDUKO SOLUTION
At start of play, Torry were within touching distance of their hosts, but this defeat leaves them still 5 points adrift of safety in the 2nd to bottom slot. Next Sunday, 3 March (ko time to be confirmed), Torry welcome Intercity San Juan Alicante to Nelson Mandela stadium, fully aware that only an outstanding team performance will be enough to register the victory they so desperately crave for.

Boxing - and ending up on the canvas - has a whole new meaning when it comes to art. Likewise in both the world of football and tennis. Portraits of football stars including Ronaldo, Messi, Costa, Maradona, Pogba and Salah were on show at an exhiMuhammad Ali. bition in Russia during the Portrait by Iain 2018 World Cup. Alexander. Tennis ace Serena Williams turned her stroke to painting, after attending a class in Paris, prior to playing in a French Open. Williams, who exhibited her first series of paintings "Expressions" in 2013, is a creative impressionist artist, with style, colour choice and sketchy technique, reminiscent to Monet. Former Cambridge, Sunderland and Wolves footballer Jody Craddock, who hung up his boots in 2013, after 527 career appearances, is now a professional artist. "I did 'A' Level Art at school - but I was never thinking about becoming an artist," said Craddock. Craddock, 43, is gaining a reputation within the football world - as an artist - just six years after retirement. "It's not about money. I did well financially out of football," said Craddock, who was commissioned by ex Chelsea and England star John Terry to do a personal portrait.

Craddock, who has also done a portrait of David Beckham, has a portrait of former Wolverhampton Wanderers football club owner Sir Jack Hayward hanging on a wall in the corridors at Molineux. Famous artists from Spain include Malaga born Picasso; Dali, Barcelona born duo Tapies and Miro; Goya, who studied art in Madrid, and Velázquez, born in 1599 in Seville, who died in Madrid in 1660. 21st century artist Iain Alexander, who is exhibiting his works in Madrid this summer, exclusively spoke to me during a visit to Quesada. "I'm very fortunate to be in art, it can be very therapeutic. Art is about enjoying yourself," said Jersey based Iain. "The biggest influence in my career as a sportsman was Muhammad Ali," said Iain. Iain, who visited the 'Banksy' art exhibition in Madrid recently, said: "I really believe in Banksy. The point is how different people view it. "Banksy can nip something in the bud - proving a point with simplicity - that's the key."
