Inaugural win for Quesada’s Johnston Following their success with the National Bowls Championships held earlier in the year, the country’s leading insurance provider, Linea Directa, were once again delighted to afford their support with financial assistance to the sport as the region’s best players competed for the eighth Valencian Lawn Bowls Championships held at three local bowls clubs

over the last two weeks. The preliminaries and heats took place at the San Miguel, La Siesta and San Luis clubs before the players gathered at San Luis to compete in the latter stages, the semi finals and the finals and rather surprisingly, as the tournament entered the final day there were no current holders in the frame. Neither were there any bowlers from the host club which, playing on their home rink, would usually be expected to provide them with a distinct advantage. Continued on Page 2

Following their success with the National Bowls Championships held earlier in the year, the country’s leading insurance provider, Linea Directa, were once again delighted to afford their support with financial assistance to the sport as the region’s best players competed for the eighth Valencian Lawn Bowls Championships held at three local bowls clubs over the last two weeks. Fortunately there were not too many players featuring in multi disciplines with only Stuart Denholm of San Miguel and National Champion Martin Foulcer of Vistabella playing in more than one final so the morning session of the final day saw the Men’s Pairs, the Mixed Pairs and the Mixed Triples provide the main competition. The Men’s Pairs was a fairly straightforward affair with Chris Collier, Stuart Denholm (San Miguel) beating Martin Foulcer, Bill Pain (Vistabella) 19:14 while in the Mixed Pairs, Carol Broomfield, Jason Prokopowycz (Quesada) were victorious over Maggie Furness, Ian Kenyon (Vistabella) The Mixed triples, however, was 14 all going into the last end as the La Marina skip, Dave Hadaway, put a heavy wood down a with San Miguel holding shot. There seemed no way that he could draw it but with a bit of a wick got the shot to take the match and the title. Final result: Kathy & Jim Manning, Dave Hadaway (La Marina) beat Eileen Mclaren, Tom Dalgleish, Mary Dyer (San Miguel) 15-14. The afternoon competition was rather more eagerly awaited with the two blue ribbon events attracting most of the attention. However, while Peta Rhodes and Carol Broomfield of Quesada made up for their disappointment in the Nationals by comfortably beating Lin Watkins and Carole Thorpe (Vistabella) by 21-4, the Mixed Fours final was a particularly tense affair, going down to the very last bowl of the final end by two evenly matched teams. With Vistabella enjoying a four shot lead going into the 18th end opponents San Miguel held five as Bill Pain stepped up to deliver the final wood of the match. San Miguel could only watch on in admiration as Bill played a ‘chap and lie’, taking out the opposing shot wood to replace it with his own. Spectators agreed that it was quite probably the shot of the tournament as his team mates threw their arms into the air in delight. Final score 17-12 in which Mo Foulcer, Arthur Brown, Martin Foulcer, Bill Pain (Vistabella) beat Cliff Plaisted, Val Collier, Chris Collier, Stuart Denholm (San Miguel). The singles finals saw Frank Close (Emerald Isle) take on Brian Robertson (Mazarron) in the Men’s competition while Jacqui Johnston (Quesada) met with Anita Brown (San Miguel) in the Ladies decider. Unfortunately Mazarron’s sole entrant, Brian Robertson, left his game behind as 2014 winner Frank Close powered to a 21-4 win. The Ladies final was much more evenly contested with both players keeping pace with each other, seemingly picking up shots on alternate ends. That is until the 18th end when inexplicably, Anita Brown dropped 4 to provide Jacqui with a 17-13 advantage, from which he two times champion never recovered. Jacqui, who was a member of the successful fours winners last year, then picked up shots on the final 3 ends to consolidate her first Valancian singles success. Presentations and the closing ceremony took place in brilliant sunshine on Saturday afternoon after yet another first class event in which National Director Bob Donnelly thanked sponsors Linea Directa and supporters Seagate Financial Management, together with the club owners, proprietors, umpires and marshals at San Luis, La Siesta and San Miguel Bowls Clubs, for their outstanding support. He ended his closing dialogue by then picking out the organising committee of Fred Trigwell and June Jones for their sterling efforts in ensuring the continued success of bowls in the community and in particular the 2016 Competition.

Rising toward a cure

S

unday the 9th of October saw the fourth AECC, Maria and the Pink Ladies balloon release to mark Breast cancer awareness day. This year was the third of four balloon races, kindly hosted by Zenia Boulevard, huge supporters of the AECC. It's impossible to put a number on how many people attend this event each year as it is a massive amount. The Pink Ladies and Panthers set up at 10am when the Boulevard opened, the entertainment started at midday and carried on through to 6.30pm when the balloons were released to Kylie Burggazzy singing a fantastic rendition of Nessun Dorma. The release of balloons is the biggest attraction of the day as it is highly emotional for many people, the stage area and upstairs galleries were brimming with spectators. Each year we estimate that there is around two thousand balloons that are released which creates an amazing sight. The flowing crowds are entertained all day by Dan Davy, Just Ollie, Nikki G, Kylie Burgazzy, No Limit, Jay Markwick and his dancers, Kevin Tyler, Johnny Lee, JJ, Janelle; Stevie Spit presenting the show and the whole day supported by Simon Morton and Sunshine FM. Each entertainer happily gives up their time to per-

form to the crowds, free of charge, something the charity are always extremely grateful for. All the money raised on the day was from people buying a helium filled pink balloon and attaching a card to it with a message to a loved one who may have lost their battle to cancer. The message which is found the furthest away will receive a prize of 100€ and 20€ for the person who sends in the message. Money raised on the day also came from personal donations from the public and from a newly released CD recorded by local artists called 'Run for Life'. This will be adopted by the Pink Ladies as their new anthem. The moneys raised will be used by the AECC early detection program, to buy state of the art machinery for early detection, to bring down the costs of these tests and towards research to find cures for all forms of cancer. To date Maria and the Pink Ladies and Panthers have raised €294,281.10 a record in the Alicante region. Maria would like to thank all the artistes, especially Stevie Spit and Sunshine FM, for their continual support and to all the Pink Ladies and Panthers for all of their hard work.

Solidarity from La Finca Residents

The residents of La Finca Algorfa have raised 1,285 euros which will be equally divided between the AECC and the CEIP Miguel de Cervantes. The event, which was held last weekend, featured numerous activities for children in addition to which there were draws for goods, valued at 500 euros, all donated by local traders. There was also an anonymous donation of 50euros from one resident. The mayor, Manuel Ros said that “these activities are very important because they help tremendously to unite our residents." He then took the opportunity to thank everyone hat had been involved with the event, especially Gary Cornfort, for his dedication and attention.

By Andrew Atkinson The 2016 Los Montesinos Fiestas came to a jubilant finale when thousands of people attended the return of La Virgen del Pilar, the Alicante town's Patron, to the Church as the church bells rang out. The Mayor Jose Manuel Butron was in attendance in the procession and later in the Church, alongside his wife and other dignatories, as thousands of people lined the streets. "I was delighted once again that the Los Montesinos Fiestas Patroneles 2016 was enjoyed by all, with the fireworks finale thrill," said Mayor Butron. Music, fireworks and showtime extravaganzas saw many nationalities celebrate the Vega Baja town-

ship's 26th Fiesta. The town also remembered with respect those that are no longer with us. "I want to thank the Council and the Festival Committee, along with many others involved, for all their hard work," said Mayor Butron. The spectacular Queens and Ladies in waiting, associations, and troupes, added with the streets' spectacular colourful decorations, made the annual Fiestas one that Los Montesinos can be very proud of. La Virgen del Pilar entered the Church as Saluda del Parroco D. Victor Manuel Ferrer Garcia conducted the service in front of dignatories, Montesineros and expats in attendance.

British fugitive detained on Orihuela Costa The National Police arrested a 61 year old British National on Thursday for allegedly abusing his nine year old daughter and an eleven year old girl. The arrest was carried out following the issue of a European Arrest and Extradition Warrant for crimes of sexual assault on minors and child pornography. The events date back to the early 90s when the man is alleged to have sexually assaulted his daughter, who was then 9 years of age. During the summer of 2014 he then allegedly repeated the act with an 11 year old girl whilst watching videos of a sexual nature. The Police operation began earlier this month when agents of the Provincial Brigade of the Judicial Police were told that the man could be residing in the town of Orihuela. Following confermation of his whereabouts the police moved in on Thursday when agents from the Violent Crime Group of the Alicante UDEV made the arrest. The request for the arrest warrant is said to have been initiated in Nottingham and relate to 4 offenses in total for which the detainee could face a prison sentence of up to 39 years.

Spiritual and Distance Healing By Penny Wing

Spiritual healing is the oldest type of healing known to man and has been practiced throughout the world for thousands of years. It has been neglected in the Western world but more people are now starting to recognise the benefits and are using it either on themselves or going to see healers. Spiritual healing is a two way process and the person receiving the healing needs to take responsibility for wanting to get better. When you carry out healing on someone (or an animal) you are in effect acting like a radio transmitter as you bring the healing energy into your body and send it out via your hands into the body of the person receiving it. You are acting as a channel. Where does the healing energy come from? I don’t think anyone really knows the definitive answer but it is there and ready to be used.

Most healers can assess how your chakras are working in a variety of ways and can help “remove” any energy blockages by sending healing energy into the chakra.

The Aura Healing also works on our aura – our auras are made up of seven invisible and overlapping layers of energy that we have around our body. Each layer is fed by one of the seven chakras and has its own function. The aura is said to extend about 3 feet around the body and contains all the behaviour patterns, emotions and trauma that we have experienced in this life and in past lives. By intuitively sensing where any negative areas or disturbances are, some healers believe they can help people deal with past traumas.

Distance/Absent Healing

Physical illness is as a result of what is going on in someone’s mind. The wonderful thing about spiritual healing is that it works on every level – physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. All these levels interact and often the real cause of an illness becomes apparent only as the healing progresses.

This is a form of spiritual healing that can work over a distance – the healer doesn’t need to be with the person (or animal) or even in the same country! I know from my own experience that this is just as powerful and effective as hands-on healing. The wonderful thing about this type of healing is that you are not restricted by time or space! Distance/absent healing has been likened to people saying prayers; whatever the similarity, the results are very beneficial.

The seven Chakras

Sending healing to someone you know

Our bodies contain energy wheels commonly known as Chakras. We have over 20 in total but most people focus on the seven major ones. Each chakra relates to and vitalizes a different physical part of the body and has different emotional, mental and spiritual functions. . When we talk about people being “balanced” this means their chakras are balanced. If a chakra is closed or too open it can affect the person’s physical body and their emotions in a variety of ways depending on which chakra it is. The aim of spiritual healing is to balance these energy wheels so that energy flows through them and they function efficiently. When the energy is not flowing we talk about the chakra as being “blocked”

Below is a simple exercise you can try for yourself if you would like to send healing energy to someone. A point to remember is that ideally the person you want to send healing to should be asked if they are willing to receive it. If this is not possible you can still send healing and just ask that it is “for the person’s highest good”. Focus on your heart chakra (in the centre of your chest) and think about that person with love or compassion, if you can visualise them even better * Imagine a pink light encircling them with healing energy Send love and healing from your heart into that pink light After several minutes let the scene slowly fade * Don’t worry if you find it hard to visualise, it becomes easier with practice. It is perfectly

Benidorm launch for 2016 RBL Poppy Appeal B enidorm celebrated the official launch of the 2016 Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal last Friday amid the pomp and ceremony that the occasion so rightly deserved. Over a hundred members from Torrevieja, Quesada and the Orihuela Costa attended the launch parade which was led by the highly acclaimed Torrevieja Pipes and Drums as they marched out along the Levante promenade amid veterans of all nationalities and services including former members of the RNA, RAAFA and RMA. It was yet another event that made the participants feel very proud to be British, stepping out along the front to the rousing sound of bagpipes, something not too often seen in the popular resort, but a sight that was enthusiastically applauded by the many spectators that lined the route. Caught up in the occasion, residents and holidaymakers alike stopped to show their support as the immaculately dressed Standard Bearers from across the North East of Spain marched along the route, demonstrating their pride in representing the British Military Charity. There were even many young bystanders caught up in the occasion as they applauded the parade of ex servicemen marching behind the pipes and drums, so ably led by two inmates from the Royal Hospital Chelsea, Arthur “Skippy” Teasdale aged 87 and Wayne Campbell aged 79, resplendent in their distinctive scarlet coats. Skippy and Wayne, both members of the Orihuela Costa Branch of the RBL, are regular visitors to the area having attended rather more Poppy Launches than many of the members marching on the day. They were all accompanied by the Mayor of Benidorm, Toni Perez, and the Assistant British Consul in Alicante, Sara Munsterhjelm. The parade came to a halt at the end of the promenade where the Launch Officials took to the stage. As the Spanish and British National Anthems were played the Standard Bearers stood proudly to attention. Mr Nigel Hails – in his final year as Chairman of District North, thanked the city of Benidorm for the welcome that it always provides to the Royal British Legion. He spoke of the hard work that his members had carried out over the previous year in which the Poppy Appeal raised an astonishing €171,500.

He also emphasised that ALL of the money is used to help ex servicemen and their dependants in their time of need mentioning just a few of the measures on which the money was spent last year including furniture, stair lifts and the purchase of mobility scooters for those finding it difficult to walk. The Mayor of Benidorm, Toni Perez welcomed all participants as he took the stage. He said how delighted he was to host the Launch of the Poppy Appeal once again, highlighting the multicultural and multinational make-up of the city. He was then presented with a Certificate of Honour by Nigel Hails, on behalf of the RBL in Spain. Mr Hails said that it was given in heartfelt thanks for the support and encouragement that the Ayuntamiento and the people of Benidorm provide to enable the launch of the 2016 Poppy Appeal here. In reply the mayor said that the Royal British Legion "is a role model" and that the organisation can always count on the support and encouragement of his council. The ceremony ended with rapturous applause as the Standard Bears marched off with the band before hoards of spectators, both English and Spanish, descended on Skippy and Wayne, to pose for photographs. Hundreds of spectators watched on, both along the route and at the launch by the Benidorm Mayor

Local boy hits the “BIGTIME”

By Martin Bentley

The Leader Newspaper was lucky enough to meet with Mark Daly and get an EXCLUSIVE interview with the singer, songwriter and all round International Star. You may remember that Mark was plucked from obscurity when performing with his band The Voodoos in The Bushwacka bar on Cabo Roig. He was "spotted" by the world famous NIgel Godrich, the Producer of the Mega Group Radiohead. So what has Mark been up to since then? Well, he has extensively been touring the United States with the Voodoos performing in mega Stadiums to audiences or 100,000 plus. Last Month they played a gig in Portugal. He has also been touring in Ireland, his home country. Together they have won the MTV EMA Award for the Best Original Song in Europe entitled ‘Yesterdays Future’. Why is Mark here in Cabo Roig Spain now? Well, he is also starting a single career and he was holding a pre release launch of his New Video in Slievenemon Irish Rock Bar on Cabo Roig strip. The Video has been independently funded and features Mark's song ‘The Hearts Reminder’. Besides Mark the raunchy Video stars Aaron McCarthy and the interestingly named Ballsy Wallsy. It seems Ballsy is a rising star as an Actress and Model because she is about to

sign a contract with Apple. So Mark really is moving in high circles. As well as launching the Video Mark did a couple of Gigs with local supergroup SNOWBLIND. Fronting Snowblind he played to a packed house on Friday at Slievenemon Irish Rock Bar and then headlined the prestigious Costa Blanca Custom Bike Show at Phoenix Nights in San Miguel. Never having played with Snowblind before the Group played like seasoned artists and blasted out such numbers as Born to be Wild, Hey Joe and Marks very own Biker song a Tribute to the Blue Angels. The Official Launch of the Music Video will be on Thursday when it will be released on all Social Media platforms as well as issued to Radio Stations Worldwide. A UK Tour with Geoff Tate (Queensryche) will also happen next year. So, the one to look out for following it’s launch on Thursday ‘The Hearts Reminder’. You saw it here first. We wish Mark all the best in all of his forthcoming ventures.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

Living in Caves There was recently a tragic case of a 27-year-old German expat, living on the beautiful Island of La Palma who, allegedly, set fire to his own used-toilet paper after relieving himself ‘au natural’ off a forest trail in a protected natural park. As a result, he set fire to a large, ancient and ecologically valuable pine woodland, causing the death of a fire fighter, who was a park ranger with five children, and was responsible for 2500 people having to be evacuated from their homes. It is also suggested that alcohol or drugs may have played a part in this ongoing tragedy. According to the suspect, after he had defecated, he lit the toilet paper, and then sparks leapt from the burning tissue onto dry vegetation, which quickly turned into a vicious fire with devastating consequences. With temperatures approaching 40 degrees, as well as strong winds, the fire quickly got out of control, and approached the island’s busiest tourist area, Fuencaliente. La Palma is the fifth largest of the islands, and is popular because of its protected parks and forests. Dozens of helicopters and planes from other islands were brought to La Palma to assist, as well as 350 fire fighters who, at the time of writing, are still trying to extinguish the blaze. The suspect is currently being held by police, without bail. According to local sources, the man lives in a cave in this beautiful forested area. Many people still live in caves on several of the Canary

Islands. These are not ordinary This pretty cave house caves, as one would first imagine, can be found in Rojales but are often very tastefully converted dwellings, offering all modern conveniences, but in this case, clearly without a toilet. Several that I have been invited to consist of several interconnected rooms, have water, electricity, Internet connection and even air conditioning. I have even visited two cave homes that have a sauna, as well as a hot tub; it is hardly rough living. The caves offer remarkably sensible accommodation for modern island living in the Canary Islands, since they remain cool in summer and warm in winter. The early settlers in the Canary Islands, the Guanches, were certainly no fools and knew exactly what they were doing when it came to cave dwelling. Sadly, many of these caves are now often rented or sold to the trendy expat; those with money, but often with very little accompanying common sense. I am not referring to this particular criminal case, but I have heard a number of reports where these caves are bought up by foreigners as holiday homes, but who have little or no sensitivity to the uniqueness of the Canary Islands and its protected areas.

it is acceptable to sell or let these unique dwellings to holidaymakers and expats. Cave and other homes that are situated in high risk and environmentally important areas may need to be especially protected. Yes, it does enhance the rural economy and bring in much needed tourist euros to these areas, but one wonders if the cost to human life, as well as the overall environment, is worth the risk?

‘Boutique Caves’ as they are sometimes called are even sometimes available as rental accommodation, or discovered by the ‘beautiful people’ and occasional hippies who happen to find one that is abandoned or in a less than liveable state.

Questions are rightly now being asked by local people about whether

Monte Mar Bowls Club

San Luis Bowls Club By Sheila Cammack.

Sponsored by The Belfry, The Pub, Bowling Abroad and Avalon Monday saw Monte Mar entertaining their first touring team of the week, Hemel Hempstead Bowls Club from Herts. The morning started with a fun Spider competition which was won by our Membership Secretary Les Bounds. Following there was a very competitive match which everyone enjoyed and was won by Monte Mar. Welcome refreshments were enjoyed by all. Tuesday 11th October we welcomed Penarth Bowls Club from Wales. T o make up the numbers for Penarth, three of our own members played for them and had a very enjoyable game. All Monte Mar members were presented with a very nice slate coaster. Following the bowling an enjoyable couple of hours was spent having lunch and drinks, when Penarth promised they would be back next year. Wednesday - We played Benitachell our first game in the Winter League. A very strong team, I was happy with our result losing 7 – 5. Also our Berleen did not let us down just losing a very tight game, so well done to you all. R. Cairns (Captain) Friday - Monte Mar Matadors were at home to Mazarron Miners winning on four rinks. Ronnie Cairns, Alan Ashberry, Skip Dave Melville. 26 - 7. Ethel Finan, Val Hignett, Skip Tony Finan 18 3. Keith Simpson, Mike Farrelly, Skip Bill Young 17 - 5. Geraldine Fisher, Harry Dobson, Skip Gordon Fisher 24 - 7. Shots Matadors 114 - 90 Mazarron. Points Matadors 10 - 4 Mazarron. Monte Mar Toreadors v Vistabella Conquistadores. Towards the end of a busy twelve days of bowling, the Toreadors opened their Southern League program with a tough away match at Vistabella. Following an extremely good morning of bowling, with both teams winning on three rinks, the Toreadors unfortunately lost eight points to six as a result of shot deficit. Well done to winning teams of Pauline Woodfine, Iain Sheridan, and Skip Barrie Woodfine. Sheila Roberts, Chris Harding and Skip Joan Harding. Jan Webster, Len Counsell and Skip Janet Gatward. The Linea Directa Valencian Lawn Bowls Championships finals were held at San Luis; 7th & 8th October. Report on pages 1 and 2. Congrats to the winners: Following this excitement was the San Luis 4-2-2 OPEN (from 9th -11th). As usual all the matches were hard fought through the group stages with several going to the last match to decide the group winner. The semi-finals were played off between (A) Keith Jones’ SL team v (B) Brian Zelin’s MM team and (C) Doug Beattie’s SL team v (D) Eric Bishop’s VB team. Again the 4’s, ladies pairs & men’s pairs were closely contested but eventually, after all the twists and turns, the final was played off between Keith Jones, Colin Lindgren, June Jones & Sheila Cammack v Eric Bishop, Charlie & Lin Watkins & Lynne Bishop, with San Luis coming out as the winners. On Wednesday12th our Winter League team was away at Quesada. This was obviously going to be a real battle for points and so it proved until the last bowls were played. Points 6-6, shots 79-92. Winners: Irene Everett, Lynne Morris, Peter McEneany, Tom Hill 23-16, Pam Lockett, Neil Morrison, June & Keith Jones 19-13, Shirley Verity, Steve Simmons, Jules Pering, Russell Marks 24-7. At the end of all the hard work we enjoyed Quesada hospitality and an excellent carvery meal together. Friday 14th LLB Southern League Division A: first match of the new season SL Lions v SL Tigers was another testing time with us finally all playing on our new carpet, although the persistent overnight rain did make the running speed and line different yet again. The silver footprints were quite unusual as well!! Several of the games were nip & tuck until the last few ends with the Lions winning through 12pts-2, shots 117-93. Winners: Ray Clarke, June & Keith Jones 20-15, Pat Bird, Sheila Cammack, Graham Bird 18-14, Janet McEneany, Keith Roberts, Peter McEneany 22-9, Kath Reid, Scott Malden, Phil Morrachan 23-19, Carol Lowry, Keith Phillips, Keith Lowry 21-11. San Miguel Bowls Club By Pat McEwan, Congratulations to San Miguel players, Chris Collier and Stuart Denholm for winning the 2016 Mens Pairs Valencian Championships. It was a great game to watch. The triples, Eileen McLaren, Tom Dalgleish and Mary Dyer had a very close game right up to the last end. San Miguel were holding shot for game, when the opposition got a rub and it cost San Miguel the cup!! In the ladies singles, it was a rerun of 2014, Anita Brown (San Miguel) played Jackie Johnson (Quesada). In 2014, Anita won it for the second time, in 2016 it was Jackie's turn, well played both. The rinks also went to the last end with Cliff Plaisted, Val Collier, Chris Collier and Stuart Denholm holding, when Bill Pain came in and cut the shots down for Vistabella to win. Many thanks to all who helped in any way with the running of the competition.

The Winter League had a rocky start to the new season, only managing 4 points away to La Siesta. Well done to Noel Davis, Lee Sinclair, Gail and Fred Willshire 21-13: A close game by Reg Cooper, Val & Chris Collier and Stuart Denholm winning 17-16. Total shots 79 to San Miguel and 99 to La Siesta. No further results received. The draw for the club championships has been made, check the board for details. WASPS on Wednesday afternoon are proving very popular. Come along at 1.30pm €5 for bowling, shoes, woods and tuition if required. For further information on San Miguel Bowls Club, please contact the President, Eileen Potts telephone 966730376 or Secretary Pat McEwan, telephone 966714257.

There was a very tense moment when our team were four shots ahead going into the last end, San Miguel were holding four and with his last bowl Bill drew the perfect shot, there was a very loud cheer from the Vistabella supporters, a very exciting game to watch. Martin & Bill also won through to the final of the Men's Pairs, and again they were head to head with Chris Collier & Stuart Denholm only on this occasion they came runners up. Maggie Furness & Ian Kenyon came second to the Quesada Mixed Pairs of Carol Broomfield and Jason Prokopowycz and Lin Watkins & Carol Thorpe were also runners up to the Quesada Ladies Pairs Peta Rhodes & Carol Broomfield but well done to all of our players for doing Vistabella proud. hosted the Pint Depot Queens for the third round of league matches. The threatening clouds and cracks of thunder brought the crowds indoors to witness a tense battle between these two teams. The opening game of trebles set the tone as Dave Shephard, Tony Hassel and Brian Cobb faced Lynn Fozzard, Rachel Broadhead and Margaret Griffith in a tight contest of few really big scores and several missed doubles before Rachel hit D7 to put the visitors ahead. The highlight of the game though was Dave throwing one dart straight into the back of another - a rare shot indeed yet sadly counting for nothing. Game two saw the hosts draw level with Graham White, James Mackay and Joseph Cuyt defeating Vi Turner, Christine Cummins and Marie Cummins in another close encounter but Captain Coq James making his mark with a 100 and a 101 finish including double 15 for the game. The final trebles game saw Steve Maxwell join Brian and James to play Debbie Wright, Lorraine Cox and Rachel in another tense affair: despite a 140 from James and a 121 from Brian, more missed doubles led to the Queens taking a slender lead into the doubles. Parity was restored by the Coqs in the first doubles game, with Joseph and Graham defeating Vi and Marie courtesy of a double top from Joseph, before the match swung back to the Queens in the second doubles game with Lorraine and Lynn defeating Dave and Brian with a 116 from Lorraine and a good double 4 checkout from Lynn. The final doubles game before the break saw Tony and James even the match again, defeating Christine and Rachel in another tight contest thanks to James' double 6 finish. Triples and Pairs report by Graham White On to the singles and for the first time in the match the Coqs went into the lead when Brian hit D16 against Margaret. The Coqs were getting a little "cocky" and the Queens were not on their throne as much as they would like when they lost the next 2 games with Graham getting D4 against Debs and Joe beating pocket princess Vi with D5. No nonsense Marie Cummins stopped the rot when she

The Hens Teeth Coqs v Pint Depot Queens beat Tony with a juicy D10. Singing resumed to ‘We've got 4, 4, 4, push pineapple …’ and HTC were panicking a little. We needed to win the last 2 games to level the match but Lorraine was up against James and he got D20 to make sure it wasn't going to be a draw. However, the Queens held their heads up high as Rachel played Dave in the last game and got D6 to make it a very respectable score for us. A Fantastic evening, great atmosphere and great banter. Queens very unlucky not to get a draw. Oh what a night, we played like queens and pulled quite a few teeth against the Coqs but not enough to succeed. We lost 7-5 in the end but gave them a run for their money. Singles report by Cheryl Sleath Elsewhere the ladies’ teams were also putting up a great fight and causing stormy weather for the fellas. The Jaguars narrowly lost out to the Ale house- going down to the last game, the Hellraisers raised hell for Evolution and the Chicks pecked one off of Masseys. Go girls!

A record number of golfers, which included over 30 who came across from Ireland for the event, competed in the UNA DUFFY MEMORIAL DAY at El VALLE. For the most part the weather was good although the last few groups did get a bit wet. The course proved tricky as usual with the bunkers taking their toll however scoring in general was very good. Congratulations to Shaun Murphy for his hole in one at the 12th. The breakfast baps and goodie bags were much appreciated as was the fantastic buffet in the evening. Thank you Hazel and Rory and all Paddy's staff for looking after us, you did a great job. Chloe, thank you for the biscuits they were delicious. MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF (Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions.

SOMETHING IN THE AIR? We are now in the Autumn high season period for golf on this region of Spain when green fee prices are at their highest and the courses SHOULD be in their best condition. There does however seem to be something wrong in paradise because a number of the courses are not in their usual pristine condition. La Peraleja have long term problems with the fairways and I have reported on this numerous occasions but now they have significant problems with the bunkers making them G.U.R and out of play. At the superb Alicante course a number of the greens look like patchwork quilts caused by the need to re-turf due to a disease on the greens. Even the well established Alenda course has an issue in the greens which were find one day and extremely poor after one nights heavy rain. Just what is casing such unusual events, could it be the affects of the long hot summer, the impact of too much traffic in October or changes in course maintenance procedures? The courses are obviously working hard to correct these issues but of course from a golfers perspective the sooner the better given the green fee prices being paid.

LA MARINA BOWLS CLUB By Barry Latham

Looks like I got lumbered or something like that to do the report each week. I can remember doing this 14 years ago but I have to say if something occurs that I can’t do it on Friday then there will be no report unless someone volunteers. So the season starts with the La Marina travelling to the other side of the world to play our good friends El Cid. We started well by getting all the bacon sarnies on time but from there on we went rapidly downhill with all rinks losing bar one which just happened to be my rink. We were brill and Dave O’Sullivan, Wendy Latham and John Mallet carried me again. Mind you it was worth going for the meal. The Seagulls played the Dolphins on Friday and this time my rink didn’t do so well , losing by two to Barry Sadler, Angie Butler and

Maggie Sadler. The other winning rink for the Dolphins was Brian Duff with Martin Butler and Maria Duff. Three more winning rinks for the Seagulls were Len Daniels, in a close fought game of 16 – 14. Arthur Cronks’s rink was another tight game winning 20 – 17 while Terry and Jean Perchard and Captain Gina Hindle had a more comfortable win. Seagulls got the overall score by one. I think it was my wood on the last end !!!! Last to finish as usual.

The Sharks entertained the Emerald Isle Cavaliers with the Isle coming away the clear winners by four rinks to two plus the overall score. Our two rinks were Kath Manning, Jim Reeves and Alex Whyte and in a very close game of 22 – 21Ron Maiden, Phil Pape and Jim Manning nothing like keeping it in the family.

MONTE STAGE THRILLING COMEBACK

Nearly three hundred loyal supporters poured into The Municipal Stadium to watch CD Montesinos host CF Racing Playas de Orihuela A in the Segunda Regional Grupo 16 to witness a thrilling five goal encounter - that saw Monte come back from 0-2 down to win 3-2. The Alicante based club - with a following of over 400 registered fans see new coach Carlos Perez as the man to change round their fortunes. It was Carlos's first league game in charge in the wake of the sacking of Camacho - just two games into the 2016-17 season - after suffering heavy defeats. New signing, striker Aureu, who shone in the 6-1 friendly win against Todo Deportivo last week, was again amongst the goals. League leaders RC took the lead in the opening minutes of the game, and added a second to lead 0-2 at the interval. "The manager told us at half time 'this is our final' - we can win the game", frontman Carlos told me after the game. Aureu reduced the deficit, when slotting the ball into the corner of the RC net, and Carlos netted the equaliser as Monte pursued a comeback. With RC under pressure from a revitalized Monte, Aureu slipped the ball

through the visitors defence and Carlos netted what turned out to be the winning goal to run out 3-2 victors. "It was amazing to see so many Montesinos fans cheering us on that definitely helped", said Carlos. "It was brilliant to come back from 0-2 down, to win 3-2. The manager instilled faith into the players in the dressing room at half time. "After manager Carlos Perez's message we believed we could win the game," said Carlos. Montesinos travel away to FB Redovan 'A' on October 23 hoping to build on their return of form after early season mishaps. Asked if CD Montesinos can gain promotion this season, Carlos said: "Do I think we can reach promotion? Maybe - we will see." Brazilian striker Vazquino, sidelined with injury since his return to Montesinos after a spell at Sporting Saladar, is set to return to action next weekend. "I look forward to wearing the CD Montesinos shirt once again. I am ready for selection after my injury period that saw me miss the first three games of the season," Vazquino told me.

Bull Flanagan GS recently held their Captains Day at Vistabella when 28 members made the short journey to take part in a hidden partners competition. Members were treated to a bacon sarnie and coffee sponsored by the society to get them ready for the game ahead. The Captain Chris Stott got the competition off at 9am with a Captains Drive which had a prize for the player getting their drive nearest to the Captains, won by Val Furness. Several prizes were on offer for nearest the pins and longest drive with sponsorship provided by Mick the Grip. Some really good scores were returned and the overall results were:- Winning pair Bill Peters and Colin Macdonald 62 pts and 2nd Ian Allison and Chris Smith with 61 pts. Best score of the day was 37 pts by Ian Allison and he received the Ria Gizen trophy. NTP’s were won by Keith Smith hole 4 and longest drive was won by Joe Sheehan. Football cards were won by Joe Sheehan with Borough and Bill Fantom with Sunderland. The final prize on hole 18 for best second shot to the green was won by Bill Peters. Members returned to the Bull Flanagan for refreshment and food prepared by the Captain and staff. Chris Stott the retiring Captain thanked everyone for their support throughout his year in office and presented the new Captains shirt to Ken Enever and wished him every success for his year in office. Picture attached of winners with the Captain after the presentation.

On a perfect day for golf almost 40 members and a couple of guests made their way to La Finca for the 1st round of our Captain’s Stableford competition. Although we run 3 categories on the day the Captain’s Stableford competition is based on all overall scores and the best 3 of 4 rounds to count over the course of this season. The course was in good condition but many players were asking what had been done to the greens, they were too fast!!This was reflected in the Bronze category results. It seems that the lower handicappers handled the speed better with both winners returning scores better than par. However a visitor did have the best score of the day with his 42 points and before handing in his card asked if he could join? The Secretary replied, yes of course, all you need to do is hand over your membership fee of €20. Which he did and was then told that his membership would begin NEXT week! (You always need to be aware of the Vikings) Results: N.T.P.’s Hole 3 I. Brown, Hole 6 NADA, Hole 13 B. Striver, Hole 16 J. Hettrick. Best Visitor K. Skipperud 42 pts. Bronze category, 3rd M.
