‘High 5’ please, Your Majesty? Other than his own children I don’t suppose there are too many youngsters who have got
away with ‘High Fiving’ the King of Spain, but one little girl at the Nuestra Señora de Monserrate
junior school in Orihuela on Friday, not only got away with eliciting the greeting from the king but she also drew a wry smile from his majesty as he stopped to carry the gesture out. King Felipe and Queen Leticia were in Orihuela to show their solidarity with those affected by the Gota Fria that devastat-
ed the lives of so many people 3 weeks ago. On Friday morning they visited the city before moving during the mid-afternoon to Los Alcázares where they hoped to learn first-hand of the terrible effects suffered by so many members of the community during the torrential rains. Continued on Page 02

From Page One Royals visit Orihuela and Los Alcázares The couple arrived in Orihuela, the capital of Vega Baja del Segura, just before noon, where they were greeted by almost a thousand people They were welcomed to the area by the President of the Generalitat, Ximo Puig; the President of the Alicante Delegation, Carlos Mazón; the Government delegate, Juan Carlos Fungencio, as well as the mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana The first stop was the Plaza del Carmen where they were able to greet a sizeable crowd and with protocol abandoned they carried out the unusual step in Spain of conducting a walkabout, shaking hands, hugging and chatting to many of those affected by the storms. Next up was a meeting in the Town Hall with the municipal government team and the 27 mayors from each of the municipalities in the Vega Baja, as well as members of the police and the emergency services, where they were told of the damage and the amount of work required to return the region to a semblance of normality. The royal couple were then back on the streets as they moved to the small village of Molins, where they visited many of the ruined properties, also speaking to many of those worst affected by the storms. They visited the badly affected junior school, the Nuestra Señora de Montserrat school, which was also greatly damaged by DANA. The flooding caused the death of six people, two of them in the province of Alicante, as well as the evacuation of several thousand people and serious material damage to homes, roads and agriculture, which had catastrophic consequences due to the overflow of the Segura River. The City Council decreed three days of official mourning and was also forced to suspend classes in schools as well as many sports centre activities. In addition, about 1,500 bottles of water were distributed to the population following the loss of the drinking water supply and many families had to sleep in shelters when their homes were flooded by water. On their way to Los Alcázares during the afternoon, the Royals called in to the San Javier Air Base where Don Felipe and Doña Letizia expressed their condolences to the relatives of the Air Force commanders who died in recent aviation accidents. At the Los Alcázares Town Hall, they were received by local and regional authorities where there was also a great deal of applause and flag waving from the general public, but there was also no lack of banners and messages from protesters and members of the ‘Flood Affected Platform’ who were clearly heard chanting "We want solutions," which reverberated across the Town Hall square.
And the message was so clearly heard by Queen Letizia that she commented on her surprise that the residents were asking for "solutions, and not help, as was the case in Orihuela." The mayor of Los Alcázares, Mario Pérez Cervera, handed the king and queen two letters, from the associations affected by the floods of Los Alcázares and Torre Pacheco, before they watched a video in which two children explain the effects of the DANA on the environment. They were shown an exhibition of photographs from the floods, photos of mud and despair, but also of solidarity and courage. Following a meeting with the Murcia authorities, where the royals asked about "the economic future of the area", they moved to the seafront and the Paseo de la Feria, where many of the shops were still closed due to the damage caused by the water. They saw the beach, almost without sand and covered with stones, mud and objects dragged up by the water. The queen asked "Is the brown colour of water normal?" There were many moments of emotion during the visit, such as their greeting to the hundreds of members of the different security forces who spent many hours assisting the people of Alcazar, among them the forest agents, who were the last ones to withdraw from the task. The king said he was fully aware and extremely grateful of "the volunteer capacity that this catastrophe has had." As a farewell, at the hotel La Encarnación, the mayor gave the King a photo of the moment when his great grandfather, Alfonso XIII, first opened the hotel and spa almost a hundred years ago. Following the visit, the mayor of Los Alcázares confessed that, although he has never considered himself as a great defender of the Crown, it was “very important” for him to see the kindness with which the royals treated the people and, how he remarked how happy he was in seeing a smile again on the faces of the residents, many of them affected by DANA, if only for a few minutes. “I was surprised by their kindness,” he said. “The queen has told me that she was very moved by the whole experience”. “ I feel very humbled.”

Even rotting bales of hay are now being tipped
Monday 7th - Sunday 13th October, 2019
The dump is less than 10 mtrs from private apartments
Health of angry residents put at risk by Dolores Dump The literal translation of Dolores is ‘Pains’ which is what many hundreds of people living in the small town, pop just over 7,000, are still feeling, almost 4 weeks after the dreadful Gota Fria and the subsequent flooding to large parts of the Vega Baja. Hundreds of people were required to vacate their homes with many only recently returning to find the devastation and the losses that has so decimated their lives. There are pensioners, living on less than 800 euros a month, who have seen everything washed away and who will never be able to recover many of the things that they have lost. Ruined furniture, household goods and waste is still piled high outside many properties. In Orihuela the council is still removing approximately 300 tons of household goods from flooded homes on a daily basis. The Ayuntamiento in Dolores is doing much the same. The one big difference, however, is that the Orihuela process then sees the Department of Road Cleaning move the waste on to the Cañada Hermosa treatment plant in Murcia at a rate of almost 40 trucks a day while in Dolores the waste is simply being stockpiled on a large new dump where already it’s proving to be a hazard to the health of local residents as, with the return of the heat, it is already
proving to be a breeding ground for fly’s, mosquitos, cockroaches, rats and many other types of vermin. Initially the site was established for the use of the Dolores Council for water damaged waste but now it is being used by the general public from miles around who are arriving at the dump in increasing numbers, ladened down with absolutely anything they want to be rid of, farm waste, bales of straw, building materials, even old car parts and tyres. Local residents of all nationalities, who live directly across the street, and in many cases, less than 10 metres from the dump, are at their wits end, having appealed to the Ayuntamiento to close the dump down. “Unfortunately it is quickly become a very real hazard to our health but there appears to be no sympathy at all from the council. We have asked them to move the dump to sector 4/5, a large parcel of land where there are no properties and where there are no residents, but while this seems eminently sensible we have had neither acknowledgement nor response,” said one expat occupant. “For every 2 loaded wagons that leave the dump bound for authorised sites, another 6 lorries arrive, so we are concerned that the situation will continue to get worse,” he continued. “There are many far better locations for such sites. We just want the council to stop dumping across from our properties and consider re-establishing the dump at Sector 4/5.

After the disaster - the animals For the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre, the shortage of forage is now their biggest concern.
The devastation following the gota fria, the worst storms in many years on the Costa Blanca has affected so many in so many ways. The loss of life has been heartbreaking and it will take a long time for many people to try and recover some semblance of normality. Animal Rescue Centres and individuals across the region have been severely affected with the loss of life of many animals. Currently the number of corpses recovered so far is nearly 1,500 and the destruction of premises and infrastructures is unheard of. Although some feel very lucky to have been saved from the floods, it is the future that is causing concern now. For one Rescue, Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre, the shortage of forage is now their biggest concern. EHCRC were on high alert throughout the period with the Town Hall keeping them informed on the state of the river and impending disaster as they knew leaving 120 horses, ponies and donkeys was not an option for Rod and Sue Weeding. Miraculously the banks of the river Segura didn’t burst in the vicinity of the Rescue Centre although they did have to face the torrential rain with flooding of the fields and stable yard but as always hail, rain or shine, day or night Rod and Sue were there dealing with whatever was being thrown at them with the biggest job initially being to pump out the water 24/7. They were so grateful to all of you who so kindly donated towards those pumps which they were able to purchase following your donations previously with the last floods.
The even greater challenge now is how everyone is going to feed their equines this winter because quite simply there is going to be a real shortage of forage in Spain as the Weedings said: “We have lost about €3,000 worth of our forage in this flood and we have been told that currently 78% of alfalfa in Spain is being exported to the Middle East and China. There is no way we and the ordinary person can compete with the price the producers are getting from these countries.” So Sue, in her tenacious way, decided to take on the challenge of sharing their desperate situation and looking for solidarity from far and wide. Firstly many people graciously donated to their request for financial assistance and then came the offers of hands on help and then incredible people like Rune from Norway started his quest to find supplies of actual forage. He trekked to Austria and Germany where many kind farmers donated hay which is as we speak on its way to a central collection point in Germany awaiting pick up to be delivered to the door of Easy Horse Care. Incredibly Rune has secured two more loads for next month and the month after. It is estimated that each load will last about two and a half weeks The next step has been to secure transportation for the hay from Germany to Spain however the best price quoted has been €3,300. Thankfully the Deutscher Golfclub Costa Blanca has stepped in and with additional resources from other donators they have collected enough for the first load of hay to be delivered this week. Sue Weeding said: “We are so grateful to all our supporters, volunteers, donators and particularly those who have really gone out of their way to help us at this incredibly difficult time. This is going to be a long hard winter for us and so many until the crops are ready for harvest again which won’t be until well into next year.” EHCRC still needs help to survive this particularly bad period but they also need your ongoing support. They expect, because of this feed crisis, that many calls will start coming in from the Authorities about even more abandoned equines than usual. So please check out their website for all the different ways you can help including donating financially or even your unwanted good quality furniture www.easyhorsecare.net

DoH highlights risk of stagnant water The Department of Health is continuing to monitor and to treat pools of stagnant water following the flooding in the Vega Baja. They highlight the possiblity of disease due to the presence of dead animals and insect in the water saying that it is an important concern for the most affected municipalities. The matter was discussed last Friday at the meeting held by Torrevieja Hospital Medical staff with local mayors and councillors from around the Vega Baja. All of the analysis carried out so far in stagnant waters has been negative with the Minister of Health, Ana Barceló, saying that she can rule out the presence of any major risks likely to trigger diseases. By ruling out these health problems Barceló said she was sending a message of "absolute tranquillity" to the population. In response to the relentless plague of mosquitoes, especially tiger mosquitoes, throughout the Vega Baja, Health says that "there is nothing that would point to diseases such as dengue fever or the Zika virus." However, the irritation of the bites is likely to continue as the Ministry of Health refuses to carry out a mass fumigation, as requested by several municipalities in the region. Ana Barceló said that it would affect the ecosystem of the birds that reside across the region. Many municipalities of the Vega Baja, including some outside the flooded areas, like Torrevieja, have been overwhelmed with plagues of mosquitoes, that are testing the patience of the public. There are many who have to be treated in hospitals for allergic reactions to the bites but Barceló continues to justify the decision taken by Public Health not to authorise aerial spraying because of the effect it will have on animals and birds, saying that ‘it will cause more damage than benefits, with the fumigation that is being carried out on land now getting on top of the problem’.

Symbolic Taxes on Toll Roads in Spain The Spanish government are still thinking about how to ensure the functionality of the extensive public highway network. Although the decision is still far from being conclusively resolved, the Ministry of Public Works is considering making people pay for the usage of some roads that are currently free. The payment is going to be “symbolic,” i.e. around a tenth of what is generally paid for driving on the toll roads. Part of this tax will help to reduce the toll of those roads that are currently privately owned. The government stopped the toll collection of the AP-1 road from Burgos-Armiñón after their contract with Itinire ended on December 2018. Additionally, the toll regime will stop on two roads from next December onwards: AP-7 between Tarragona and Alicante, and AP-4 between Sevilla and Cadiz. As a result, these roads will be returned to the state. In order to allocate funds for road maintenance, the state is working on several alternatives. The predominant one is that the use of the roads shouldn’t be toll-free. The toll should be reduced by around 10% of the current rate, so that these taxes will be able to cover road maintenance costs. Along with the regulation of toll fees, other measures will be taken, for instance, directing part of the income to lower the traditional tolls in areas where the roads are still privately owned. Of the 17,163 kilometres of long-distance roads, the government will exempt more than 1,000 kilometres of roads from toll charges. More than 12,000 km currently belong to the state, among them, 2,759 km are toll roads. By 2021, some 1,533 km will have been returned to the state, as the concession contract with private enterprises expires. The state is going to take over the costs of its maintenance by taking the money from the General Budget. After these announcements, many people are likely to believe that these measures are taken by opposition to damage the reputation of the present government. The citizens also believe that applying this law would be a very symbolic measure. According to the media, a route from Madrid to Valencia would cost about €50; from Almeria to Granada some €20; and from Murcia or Malaga, 30 symbolic euros. The state is going to apply the “symbolic tax” depending on how contaminating your vehicle is. However, if drivers switch their cars to electric ones, then in order to pay less, they will end up with €400 electricity bills. So, it’s a gamble either way; a bit like roulette!
Some activists might say that such a new concept will protect the environment, as the usage of electric cars will reduce the air and soil contamination. Taking all of this into account, the country will benefit from the innovations that could be introduced. The possible end of the era of toll roads will possibly have a negative impact on employment. The UGT union declared that more than 1,500 jobs could disappear by 2021, due to the suppression of toll roads by 2021. This has already happened with AP-1, when the stateowned enterprise Seitssa, which was in charge of the road maintenance, could not provide their employees with decent payments when their contract finally expired. The current Minister of the Public Works, Jose Luis Abalos, has mentioned in an interview to EL PAÍS that it is necessary to finance the high-capacity road network, and the community should adhere to two basic principles: the amount of payments will depend on the level of contamination produced by cars; and some roads won’t be free to use. Also, he stressed that in some areas, driving on the road will remain free of charge; while in others, drivers will have to pay. One of the challenges of the new government is to find a model of financing the high capacity road network. The idea is to put those principles into practice. Spain has a railroad infrastructure that no one disputes, and everybody pays for their railroad tickets; in the airport, everybody pays airline taxes. But no one wants to pay for the roads. So, a lot of commercial activity is carried out on the road, and it has to be treated as another kind of infrastructure. Nevertheless, Abalos does admit that particular cases need to be taken into account, like the roads of Asturias or Galicia which cost of maintenance is higher. Also, he stresses the need to start financing high capacity roads, whose service costs have skyrocketed, and for which the current budget allocation is insufficient.

et me, first of all, place on record that I am a 'dog-liker.' I have loved a dog or two in my time and I am an advocate of animal welfare.
Owning a dog entails a responsibility not only to the dog, but to your family, neighbours, friends and to the community in which you reside. Not all dogs are the same; and just as there are bad people, so too are there bad dogs. And like easily influenced people, when your dog falls in with bad canine company, it will do horrible deeds that he would never do on his own. Just like the lynch mentality in a mob, or gang members in most of our cities; so too will the collective badness in a pack of dogs be greater than the sum total of the individuals. Dogs are predatory creatures by nature and a pack of dogs on the prowl is a frightening sight. They revert to their primal killer behaviour of the wild. Just look at the savaging that domestic dogs will do when they run amok among a flock of sheep. You must have seen those images on TV – and indeed every year during the lambing season, of fields littered with dead and dying sheep, ripped to pieces by wandering dogs. And when the owners of rambling dogs are confronted - just as ‘my Johnny doesn’t misbehave in the playground’, it is similar with, ‘my Rover wouldn’t harm a fly’. You are wrong, Sir; your Rover will ramble and do harm unless you make certain he doesn’t. The problem of out-of-control dogs is worse in rural Ireland than ever before. During the Celtic Boom, housing developments sprung up across the country and became populated by thousands of townsfolk who had sold their city dwellings for large balls of cash. Moving to the country meant 'a good place to keep a dog'. A lot of these same dogs are being given the run of the parish Dogs fouling the footpath, or barking all night is bad enough, but these are the least of the problems caused by the increased canine convergence. Around our towns and villages there are now an awful lot of feral dogs with no home to go to and these animals will become a significant threat to human health and safety. We are all

People who like animals too much; like people too little!
In Mexico, the problem of stray dogs was allowed to go unchecked and has gotten totally out of control. Stray dogs became feral dogs and feral dogs reverted to the law of the jungle. In one horrific incident, four people were fatally mauled by packs of dogs in Mexico City. These tragedies occurred in a poor, overpopulated part of the city and at least ten dogs were involved in each killing. You won’t believe what I am going to tell you next. Four people are dead; torn to shreds – the same as you see the sheep on the nine o’clock news and there are ‘animal-lovers’ coming out on the side of the dogs! The Mexican authorities had reacted to the slaughter by rounding up twenty-five dogs near where the attacks took place. But photos in the newspapers of the forlorn, innocent-looking dogs peering out from behind bars brought a wave of sympathy; not for the victims, but for the dogs!!
kept under control and not allowed run onto the road. Cyclists and pedestrians have a right to travel the roads without having the fear of being bitten by a dog. I have had a couple of bad experiences in this regard. Finally, whilst they are not doing anybody any harm; I find it more than a little pathetic to see little squeaks of dogs dressed like babies and even being pushed along in a pram. As Confucius say, "people who like animals too much; like people too little!" Don’t Forget If dogs can think, how can we account for their love of some men?!
Doubts were voiced as to the guilt of the particular animals being penned and a campaign was launched not to have them euthanized. Nutters posted images of the dogs staring innocently into the camera from behind bars and objections were raised in relation to checking the stomachs for human remains.

It was amazing to see the immense local talent with many of the artists’ works on show. Helen, the group’s teacher said, “While I love painting, there are few things as rewarding as seeing a group of people who had never even held paint brushes before, now feeling good about their own paintings and that they have developed a new found confidence. “ “I do love teaching and guiding the artists to develop their own style, by trying different techniques, methods, mediums, whilst instilling it’s not an object it’s an experience; it’s not a competition it’s a journey that brings its own special joy.” This was certainly evident from the works on show, including (pictured) one image which had then been interpreted differently by various members of the group. Helen thanked all those who took part in the event, those who came along during the day and the Hondón de los Frailes Ayuntamiento who had allowed them to use the Casa del Cultura to display their paintings.

THE BOWEN TECHNIQUE TREATMENT With Body Harmony T
he Bowen Technique was pioneered by Thomas Bowen, born in Geelong, Australia. After working in miscellaneous labouring jobs as a young man, he developed a great interest in massage and body work and spent time observing football trainers and others involved with sports. By the time he was in his early 40´s, this gifted man had established a full time practice in remedial therapy using the technique he developed. It is amazing at the effectiveness of this simple and gentle “hands-on” therapy. The Bowen Technique is suitable for everyone, from the tiniest of babies, to athletes and frailest of adults. It looks at restoring balance to the body by a series of very gentle rolling type moves made with the therapist´s fingers and thumbs over precise areas of the body. A unique feature of the Bowen Treatment is that after a series of set moves, the therapist leaves the room for a couple of minutes. This prompts the body to reset, repair and rebalance itself.
The Bowen Technique does not rely on hard pressure, it is a very light touch therapy and there is no twisting, bending or awkward repositioning of the client during the treatment. It can be performed through light clothing. A key element of the Bowen Technique so that we work holistically and do not treat a specific condition but look at the person as a whole.
What can Bowen safely treat. Common presenting problems include back and neck pain, knee problems, sports injuries, RSI, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow and respiratory problems. Conditions such as chronic fatigue, hayfever, headache, kidney problems and problems requiring lymphatic drainage have responded favourably to Bowen Technique. Some people use the Bowen Technique as a means of stress management and health maintenance, seeing their therapists regularly 2-4 times a year. The Bowen Technique also addresses many other conditions and it is regarded as safe and effective for people of all ages.
The actual Bowen treatment With Bowen Technique, I am happy to work either directly onto skin or through light clothing. The first session will consist of a consultation during which I take notes about you, your lifestyle, conduct any assessments required and then carry out the Bowen Therapy. Treatments are normally about an hour. Every person is unique and therefore treatments and times are tailored to the individual. An initial course of three treatments is recommended to see how
the client responds to treatment, usually at weekly intervals. Some clients will experience instant pain relief, whereas with others the body may respond over the next few days, but normally even chronic conditions will see relief with an initial set of three treatments. It is recommended that clients are not receiving other physical therapies whilst being treated with the Bowen Technique. If you feel that The Bowen Technique is actually what you need right now and would like to book an appointment, or if you would like to have any further information, then please call Christine Quinlan at Body Harmony. ‘X’ marks the spot on TREASURE ISLAND. The Rojales Pantomime Group members enjoyed a barbeque at the villa of their Director, Christine, to celebrate the start of rehearsals for their next swashbuckling very funny pantomime to be performed in January – TREASURE ISLAND - a script by Ben Crocker. Long John Silver needs a pirate crew to sail on The Hispaniola to the Caribbean to find the treasure, but did he expect the most unlikely crew of all – the ladies of the Smugglers Cove WI, who are more at home baking cakes than being press ganged into going on a cut-throat voyage to the other side of the world, having been recruited by Seadog Sam and Seaweed Willy to become pirates in a pantomime!! Rojales Panto Group Members enjoying a BBQ
There’s going to be Yo Ho Hos galore, along with some silly slapstick comedy, as well as lots of surprises for the audience. The Rojales Pantomime Group raised around 3000€ from their last pantomime, which was donated to various local charities and they are hoping for even more from their next hilarious production which will be performed at The Cardenal Belluga Theatre in San Fulgencio at the end of January 2020. Look for further details in the local press. Two weeks into this term and already El Capitan look formidable opposition. The Hub are back to winning ways toppling the " Toppers " from the recently opened Tipsy Toad who remain pointless after two difficult opening games. All teams / players should now be aware of the weekly bye in each division. To avoid a free week the committee have set up an " lnter League " match. Whilst not contributing to divisional statistics, they are designed to ensure members playing continuity with each venue enjoying unbroken match sequences. Cancellation of these games is not allowed unless a rearrangement is made. Format remains the same but only one leg per discipline. Captains are reminded to complete result sheets fully to include all finishes and 100's plus rapid legs etc. Comply please. Ale House Lads managed just two legs in this weeks tussle with current league champs El Capitan, who won nine legs on the trot, fol-
lowing the " Lads " out on D16 in the second triple. The hosts only other victory came via the unorthodox and likeable Andre Wing on D8. As expected Nigel Justice did plenty of damage finishing 4 legs for the visitors. The towering Arold Klimonis, he must be nearly 3 metres tall, recorded a tasty 180 in his winning singles. Unfortunately it wasn't sufficient to gain the MOTM accolade, awarded to Justice, Karl Mallinson winning the hosts, after a superb encounter with Justice. With both the Hyenas and Toppers losing their opening matches last week, each would have settled for a draw. Highlight of the first leg was Andy Gildea's 74 checkout on T18, D10. Graham Solomon 140 and Joe Miller 100 contributing. Two pretty tame scoring legs followed, Hyenas taking both via Paul Durrant on D8 and D14. Solomon 100 and Gildea 121, 100, opened the pairs to make it all square, Solomon nailing both doubles, despite Russel Bond 120, 100, taking the middle leg on D12. Durrant 140, 115, 128, paired with Bob Taylor sharing the doubles, in a 2-0 victory over Lee Maiden and Hugh Galloway. A further 2-0 win from Miller 100,100,100, and Lee Holtham gave the hosts a 4-2 advantage at half time.
A flurry of 3 ton plus score from Simone de Lacy and two 80+s from Lesley Eagles was thwarted by captains Roger Phipps first outing with two quick finishes. His unrelenting pounding of the 19's and two more quick finishes in his singles against Lesley earned him man of the match. Sarndra was also in the frame for the title with two ton pluses in her account and 4 'out of nowhere' finishes. Simone and Elizabeth again won their singles 2 - 0 but it was this inimitable Pat Schofield who was awarded MOTM for her services with 3 leg finishes and oodles of 50+ scores. Final Score Tiaras 4 - 8 Hi Life Legends, two crutches and a handful of ibuprofen for aching backs and knees.
Player Spotlight A very interesting " Spot " this week features Paul Lock one of our invaluable league sponsors.Paul, born in Sunderland, but spending 27 of his career years in Scotland defending British interests submerged in a nuclear submarine for 3 months at a time.
Solomon 100,140,123 pulled one back for the Toppers on a 52 out and D14. Gildea 100,121, missed the opportunity of levelling against Durrant 100, 121, 100, going down two zip, his opponent nailing D10,D4. Maidens four tons plus numerous other high scores could only be converted to a single winning leg his opposite number Holtham , fortunate to secure both legs on D2,D4. Cyril Harrison showed his class converting 80 in two T16,D16, only for Galloway 100,121,111, to take the remaining two on D16, and D5. Requiring one more leg for victory, Hyenas completed the 11th and 12th matches 2-0 courtesy of Miller D12, D20 and Alex Nikolov D6,D2, playing Phil de Lacy100, and Barry Schofield respectively. Hi Life Hi Ho v Ale House Chicks 9 -3 A short-handed Ale House Chick Team bravely faced the HI Ho’s silver lining team this week but MOTM Kathryn Higham had her work cut out for the chicks featuring in no less than 5 games (2 triples, a pairs on her own, and two singles- drawing the wild-card for the final leg). Hi Ho Charlie Pritchett’s 20-20-D20 check- out with partner Stuart McRae dispensed with her solo in the pairs but finally warmed up, she took her first win in the last singles of the match against Tracey Betteridge. Sonya Cooper, never far from the spotlight, got a couple of finishes as did Margaret McKenzie, MOTM for Hi Ho. Some new faces amongst the Hi Life Legends included the Crabbes (John and Sandra) and the Davids (Terry and SaRndra). Clattering down the steps to the Tipsy Toad, they arrived nice and early for an 8pm kick-off. This was the Tiaras first home game in their new venue and after a slight re-arrangement of furniture to afford great (ex)spectations they searched for the form that lead them to end up in Division 1 last season. Sporting the walking wounded, landlady Lisa Ivill hopped to the ochey in the third triples, physically assisted by Pat Schofield and hoyed in some solid throws with Pat finishing off on D20. Pat then partnered Wendy Hayward, also on crutches, but none the less able bodied enough to pull off a D16 checkout with Pat's D6 for our equalizer. A Sandra-Sarndra Legendary duet narrowly outstretched

By Andrew Atkinson SPORTING Saladar goalkeeper Yonai has big ambitions to play football in England: "I hope to get an opportunity in England - a dream I would like to fulfill," Almoradi based Yonai told me. "Hopefully one day my dream will come true to play football outside of Spain," said Yonai, 24, who plays in the Valencia 2nd Regional G14.
"After two years I left Sporting and moved to Formentera CF in the Valencia 2nd Regional returning once again to Sporting Club Saladar," said Yonai. "I feel safe under the sticks and I know that I can give the size - good reflexes and enough skill," said 1.68m Yonai. "I am also good with facing one-on-one - with good handling with the feet - important for a goalkeeper," said Yonai, who can use either feet, under pressure.
"I played in schools of the Sporting Club Saladar for five years, until the category of Benjamín," said Yonai. "I then joined Hercules CF, until the category of Cadet, playing in the Spanish Autonomous League for two years," said Yonai. "I left Hercules CF and joined Elche CF and played for the club for two years in the Autonomous Spanish League," said Yonai. "I then returned to Club Sporting Saladar, playing in the Valencia 1st Regional, where we reached the play play-offs to go up to the Spanish National League," said Yonai.

Football Club Rumours that the Manchester United goalkeeper, David de Gea, is considering buying Elche Football Club. It is thought that he and his agent Jorge Mendes are in contact with Elche’s majority shareholder and former president José Sepulcre, with the idea being they could take control of the Segunda Division side. The player has supported the club all his life and he regularly flies across to Spain to visit his family, who live locally, and to watch his childhood team play. Cope Elche states De Gea and his representative are willing to offer €18m to become the new own-
ers of the Chatting to Nino during a Spanish side. pre season visit to the club That is about the worth of a year’s salary for the keeper, who’s contract with United runs to 2023. The deal is by no means ‘done and dusted’ however as the same report states Sepulcre is also in talks with another agent, Christian Bragarnik, who is also interested in taking over Elche.

THE Masters of the Spanish Federation, Felix Serrano and Jose Marti Shang and the Master of the South American Federation, Miguel Maya, have arranged an epic Legendary Kickboxing fighters, Spain v Mexico show on October 19, in Mexico City. Quesada Fitness Gym instructor, Brazilian born Santiago Silva Lopez, 39, is coach to Juan, who will face Mexican Jordan Beltron, in what will be a tough fight. Santiago, raised in Spain, practised Martial Arts from an early age, initially karate in Madrid, progressing onto Boxing, Kickboxing and Capoeira in his adolescence. Under Santiago's tutorship BoxingQuesada and KickboxingQuesada have produced dozens of Junior and Adult Kickboxing Champions, both regionally and nationally under his coaching skills.
In conjunction with the Sports Director Pedro Lopis at Rojales Town Hall, Quesada Fitness Gym has hosted spectacular annual tournaments and events. Santiago met Vivienne Shepherd at a tiny gym in Quesada in 2012, when she participated in his Boxercise classes. In 2013 Vivienne was made aware that Santiago may have to leave his job, to find contracted work and provide for his family, which was not offered by the then owners of the old gym. Vivienne, who had retired and sold her Investment Company in the UK, saw great potential in Santiago, with his passion and dedication. "The tiny gym was struggling financially, and I offered to step in, primarily to give Santiago the opportunity to develop as a great teacher and Master, while securing an employed contracted permanent position," said Vivienne. During the last six years Santiago has continued to upgrade his qualifications to the highest level, with the Boxing and Kickboxing Federations. "The results that were achieved in Championships, nationally, within a year of the company being formed, enhanced my confidence in his ability," said Vivienne. "In 2015 I ventured to buy land and build, not just a boxing gym, but the fitness facility, Quesada Fitness Gym," said Vivienne. "A business that would provide jobs and careers, to an area back then of high unemployment, and provide a multi-national community centre, for all ages and abilities," said Vivienne. The Spain v Mexico Kickboxing in Mexico City will be televised internationally: "Applause goes to the achievement. We wish them the best of luck in this amazing adventure," said Vivienne.

LA MARINA BOWLS by Barry Latham Can I start by thanking all those thousands of people who tell me how well I look. I’ve had an automatic defibrillator attached to my heart plus now I am on home kidney dialysis four times a day. Many thanks to Christine Bould for taking over doing the weekly reports. It was very good and much appreciated. On to bowls and the Valencians have been running, watched a couple of matches, well done to Mick Lowe on getting to the Quarter Final of the Men’s Singles and even more well done to Shirley Hadaway and Margaret McLaughlin on reaching the Semi Final of the Ladies Pairs. Winter League is here again, the best league around. We started with playing Monte Mar at our place. My first game for over 18 months. Good to meet up with old friends again and make new ones. Trial ends as usual and lo and behold one of our players bowled a wrong bias. No it wasn’t Anne, it was her friend, Carol. A good game as far as we were concerned with three rinks winning. one drawing and the other losing. The winning rinks were our Captain’s side with Mo Kidd, Mike Smith and Garth Slater followed by John Rae and his other three, Lorita Rae, Roger Stacey and Dave Taylor. Lastly Mike Stone and his wonderful Lead Barry Latham plus Barbara Forshaw and Wendy Latham. The drawing rink went to the last end and that was Don and Jean Fowkes and Peter and Jan Parsons. Dave Melville was taken poorly during the match but glad to say he is okay now.

Quesada Bowls Club by Jim Donnelly
Quesada’s Valencian Winners
The Valencians are in the final stages, and Quesada have a very good representation. Peter Morgan and Terry Morgan played a very exciting game in the men’s pairs that went to an extra end. Unfortunately they missed out by the narrowest of margins, but congratulations for getting so far. The biggest congratulations of the day, however, must go to the ladies pair of Sandra Heath and Mel Highland, who came from a number of shots behind, to grind out a marvellous victory. !enhorabuena! On Thursday we saw the rest of the Valencian finals take place. We were assured of a Quesada victory in the ladies pairs as Jacquie Johnston and Mel Highland fought for the title. Jacquie was the victor, so congratulations on a splendid victory. The men’s pairs saw Peter Morgan up against Martin Foulcer from Vistabella. Peter was triumphant in this. Very well done Peter. All in all, a good tournament for Quesada on and off the green. This week is the first week of the winter league, and Quesada were at home to Bonalba. There was no Berleen. Quesada had a good day and ended up winning on 4 rinks and drawing one. 11 points to 1. Well done to all.

Ortega had stressed the importance of stemming a run of poor results and was boosted by a decisive opening period for his team in which they all but over-ran their visitors, but a series of missed chances before the break cost them dear. Rafa Gomez, Fran and Christian all came close as Benidorm’s leading scorer Isaac was marked out of the game by Lloyd, who put in another battling performance.
Thader’s hangover from their opening day victory at CD Universidad continued as a second-half goal from Benidorm striker Nico consigned them to another defeat at the Municipal Stadium.

The hosts once again paid the price for missed opportunities in a dominant first half with Rafa Gomez, Fran and Christian all missing gilt edged chances as Jon Ortega’s side went down to their 5th successive defeat.
Las Ramblas Golf Society We saw out September with a well fought ‘Texas Scramble’. My team almost managed the worst ever score and with a nett 72.5 we must have come pretty close. It didn’t do us any favours when Dave Pulling went for the ‘senior moment of the week award’. On the 16th, Dave opted for his drive to be our ball of choice and swiftly played his second shot. It was a shame he’d forgotten that he’d played ‘3 off the tee’! By the narrowest of margins, scoring a nett 60.1, our winners were Nick Campbell, Paul Brown, Reg Akehurst and Maria Oldenziel. Just a hair’s breadth behind them, with 60.4, were Yvonne Phipps, Ian Stones, Mike Mahony and Terry Field.
Cristian fired Thader's first shot after just three minutes, then a neat flick-on by Rafa Gomez saw a shot from Fran turned around the post by Hugo in the Benidorm goal. The lively Elgar was denied a chance by a superb interception by Thader’s Nino, then Baeza hit a sweet shot only to be denied by an upright. The hosts missed opportunities came back to haunt them midway through the second period when Benidorm went in front with a

The goal was met by virtual silence from the crowd and dented Ortega's hopes of igniting a revival. A flurry of substitutions saw Thader continue to exert pressure on their visitors and Victor came agonisingly close to grabbing a deserved draw for the blue and white’s when his effort on the stroke of full-time was clawed off the line by the Benidorm keeper.
