IT’S ALL F R OTH AN D B U B B LE S! By David and Angela Hudson “On Friday 13th” our world was turned upside down We are all aware of the recent National disaster that struck the Vega Baja. For us the day started off well with Angie chatting to her sister in Oxford saying that we had sur-

vived a huge thunder storm and although we had water all around us we expected it to soon disappear. One hour later, in just four minutes, the water was coming into the bedroom, front door and the bathroom. We were told to abandon the house only to get 200 metres

up the road when strong currents swept us into deep water. As I pulled Angie out of the car, having force the door open, the car filled up with water. Fighting against the current we hung onto the front of the car for about an hour. As I am 80 and Angie 76 our strength was giving way. We agreed that as we were togeth-

er it was the best way to die. Suddenly we saw a man in the middle of the road – we shouted for help. Tomas afterwards told me that he did not think he could get to us but risking his life he reached us. Inch by inch we fought the strong current and got us to safety and into his in-laws flooded house. Continued on Page 02

The father-in-law told us that 500 of his sheep had died in the flooding. We were in the cold water for 8 hours before the Military Emergency Unit rescued us. Passing our flooded house we were taken to the Refugee Centre in the monastery half way up the mountain behind Orihuela, a few metres from the castle. When we arrived we only had the wet cloths we stood up in having lost everything.

Website www.theleader.info

Quickly new cloths arrived with shoes, towels and toiletries including a shaver, the men had the same. They also gave me a mochila (bag) to keep things in, then a hot shower and a hot meal.

There were shattered people all around us with their own horror stories in many languages. Shock utter shock and for the next ten days we were the oldest people there.

I have been in many Gota Fria but this was something that I have never experience before. The speed,. the destruction, the shear amount of water left me unable to cope. The mental and physical demands left me unable to protect my wife leaving me broken and exhausted. It was something that we were not prepared for. I ran a shelter for the homeless in Oxford in the 60s but never expected to be on the receiving end. In the early hours when the emergency units were stretched to breaking point those of us who were saved from death had a special relationship, having all gone through the same experience. There were broken men everywhere and as Angie could see that the men were not eating she spoke to them like their mum telling them to eat something because their blood sugar would climb and they would lose energy without any food. Five days after people would breakdown crying, very depressed as those of us who were perhaps a little stronger would step in to give them a hug and listen to their story. The first thing to go is your dignity – men and women sharing washrooms and bedrooms. The Cruz Roja were angels. Their compassion and willingness to listen to our stories meant that we not alone. This was a feeling that was to come back many times taking us both to a dark place. A Belgian was talking to two English people in a Orihuela car park when water came gushing in. Climbing onto a ledge he watched his new car float pass him. At 10am the two brits were helicoptered off leaving him alone. As time went by he began to get very cold. He was finally lifted off at 7pm some nine hours later. We finally got him to talk when he suddenly got lots texts from people he said that he did not know. He didn’t realise that he had so many friends. Being very depressed he suddenly perked up when one friend said that she would leave her house in Malaga to pick him up at midday and take him back to Malaga until his house was ready. When he left I gave him a hug as he whispered that it was exactly what he needed. Angie didn’t have any shoes and her feet were cut to ribbons so the next day she received medical attention. The doctors insisted that they examine Angie saying that she could lose her toes. The toes were black with deep cuts full of

yellow puss so she needed the dressing changed twice a day and was pumped full of pills. On Saturday 14th the Santamera dam broke causing a ten foot wave of water to hit Molins. Only the top of the lemon trees were visible from the military vehicle rescuing trapped people. A friend, Kelvin, had to bag up over hundred chickens that had died in the flood. We had Spanish speaking Muslims from Morocco, French speaking Algerians, lots of poor Spanish, Belgium and 7 English people. My only way to get help was to walk down the mountain on a path so dangerous that Taxis would not drive up it. Not having a phone or money this was my task and when the phone signal was finally repaired I was able to get even more action. Having lost our three year old car we could not get to our house and the walking up and down the mountain was taking its toll. I was desperate because at the end of the week we were being thrown out of the shelter onto the streets. On hearing our strory, Camelo, who owns the Bar Columbus in Torrevieja, immediately offered his apartment for as long as we needed it and he also arranged a car. He then travelled to Orihuela to pick us up and took us both back for a meal and to hand over the car. We were completely overwhelmed by the compassions showed to us by so many Spanish people. When we left the monastery there were so many Muslim women and Spanish men and women who hugged and kissed us and wished us good luck, saying that we were good people – nice! The doctor treating Angie said that he often passes our house in Las Norias and would call in for a chat. He gave us a letter for treatment at the Torrevieja Hospital but when we attended, both they and the Centro Salud Torrevieja refused. Not the standard that Orihuela has for the elderly. After three weeks the effects of that day is still very raw with us and with our neighbours. Speaking to Antonio, who is half my age, a look of shock and despair comes over his face as he talks about it. A young couple down the road with a little boy spent all summer doing up the place only for it to be destroyed. Our neighbour cannot live in his house because, like us, he has lost everything and cannot bear to go back. It is not the money it is that your life's work has been destroyed in less than the blink of an eye. Throughout the horror Princess Di's motto has given us the strength to go on. Life is mostly froth and bubbles Two things stand alone Kindness in another's troubles Courage in your own.

As Angie says, “It's all froth and bubbles”.

An open letter from the Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab to UK nationals living in Spain In less than a month, the will of the British people will be delivered and the United Kingdom will leave the European Union. This, of course, will be a time of transition. But for those living in Spain, I want to assure you that as Foreign Secretary, I am working to ensure that your rights and access to services remain as strong as ever. From Madrid to Malaga, and Barcelona to Benidorm, 300,000 Britons have made Spain their home. No matter the terms of our departure from the EU, you will continue to be able to live and work in Spain. But to make sure your daily needs are met, there are some steps you must take to get ready for Brexit on 31 October. You’ll need to register for residency, check your healthcare cover, verify your passport validity online and exchange your UK driving licence for a Spanish one. To check the specific actions you need to take, and stay up to date, go to the Living in Spain Guide at gov.uk/livinginspain In Government, we are doing our bit to get ready for Brexit, too. We are making sure that on 1 November, every British national living in Spain can go on living, working, studying and accessing healthcare. We are working with the Spanish authorities to make processes as smooth and straightforward as possible, whether you’re applying for residency or a new driving licence. And we are working with the Spanish National Health System, SNS,

“This is an exciting time,” Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab

to ensure that tourists, students and European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) holders will be able to access healthcare in the same way until at least 31 December 2020. We are working hard to reach a deal with the EU. But even if the UK leaves without a deal, the UK and Spain have each taken steps to ensure you will be able to continue accessing healthcare in Spain, exactly as you do now, until at least 31 December 2020 if you are an S1 form holder. Of course, every circumstance is unique. And we know that some British people might need some extra support during this transition. We want to support those who may find it harder to complete all the paperwork – like pensioners or disabled people, those living in remote areas, and those needing assistance with language translation or interpretation. The Foreign Office has allocated an extra £3 million for charities and other voluntary organisations to help these people keep their rights and access to services in the EU. You should be checking in regularly with the Embassy in Madrid or local consulates in Alicante, Barcelona, Ibiza, Las Palmas, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, for information on upcoming local ‘question and answer’ sessions, town hall meetings and information stands in supermarkets and on high streets. And by now, you should also be seeing one of the largest information campaigns in British history, which launched with advice in newspapers and on billboards, encouraging people across the UK and Europe to Get Ready for Brexit. This is an exciting time, but also one of unprecedented change. We’re getting ready for Brexit on 31 October, and I would urge you to do the same.

Province has more dogs than people under the age of 20. According to data provided by the College of Veterinarians, the Province of Alicante has 394,295 registered dogs

They are a member of the family, so much so that the number of dogs in the province of Alicante continues to grow year after year, with totals already exceeding the number of children. According to data provided by the College of Veterinarians, the province of Alicante has 394,295 registered dogs, a number just slightly lower than the population of the city of Alicante and a figure that exceeds the entire population of those who are under 20 years of age: 381,279. And the number is based purely on those dogs that are micro chipped, a measure with which approximately 20% of owners fail to comply, so the real population of dogs would be much greater," says Gonzalo Moreno del Val, president of the College of Veterinarians. Alicante also exceeds the national average of one dog for every 7.5 inhabitants, where the figure is one for every 5 people. Of course we know that the numbers are driven by both an aging population and by loneliness, (there are 366,152 people over 65) and dogs are said to be the best company for the elderly, who often find solitude and companionship in their pets, "something that we share with many European countries,” says Del Val. Dogs can also be a boost to their owner’s mental and physical health. A study made last August, and published in the monthly medical magazine ‘Mayo Clinic Proceedings’ concludes that having a dog at home improves levels of blood pressure levels and cholesterol and is also associated with a lower incidence of obesity, which protects the cardiovascular health of owner. "Those who have a dog walk more, which improves many health parameters," says Gonzalo Moreno del Val. With the increase in the number of pets, cities have had to adapt to their presence and today it is not unusual to see dogs in shopping centres, nor are we surprised by the increasing number of exclusive spaces for them in parks or on beaches.

However, there is still a way to go. "In many European countries, such as France and Belgium it is not uncommon for dogs to enter restaurants or go on public transport," explains veterinarian Michel Follet. In Spain though, they are rarely allowed. Likewise people find it difficult when trying to find a rental property. "Nobody wants to rent a house to someone who has animals, which can often lead to their abandonment." And the abandonment of dogs remains an ongoing problem. For Michael Follet, who is also president of the Protective Society of Animals, it often depends on the area where you live. He says that in large cities, abandoned pets are rare. “Whenever we receive a call it is usually because the animal has escaped from its owner”. But it is very different in rural areas where dogs are regularly abandoned. “There is hardly any control over reproduction and many puppies are born that are later left to fend for themselves,” he says. Not even the crisis that we went through, and in some places still continue to do so, has slowed down the increase in the number of pets. ?But what has happened is that many owners have had to choose between eating and paying bills. Veterinarians say that animal vaccinations fell a lot in those years and they have not yet fully recovered. They estimate that around 30% of dogs are not vaccinated or dewormed, which in the province would represent about 142,000 animals, adding to those that don’t have microchips. Gonzalo Moreno emphasises the importance of these animals having all their medical treatments, "because the health of animals also has an impact on that of humans." Caroline Moye, Head of World Cancer Research Fund, added : "It's great to see that something as simple as dog walking can help older people be more active. "Being physically active is extremely important. In fact, our own evidence has shown that it can even help to reduce the risk of developing a number of cancers including breast and bowel.”

SPREADING THE FLOOD WORD IN the days following the horrendous floods that hit the Vega Baja, many people living in the UK with family and friends in the affected areas became frustrated at the lack of coverage across British television news. Postings on Social Media proved that without Facebook, and unless directly affected by the worst storms to hit Spain in 140 years, there would've been hardly any way of knowing about what happened. This was particulary the case of 20-year-old student Laura Williams. Her grandmother lives on Urbanisation La Marina and in the immediate hours following the storm was unable to contact her. Mobile phone technology failed and land-lines were down. It was a worrying time for Laura and

Clubs and Associations weekend Clubs and Associations from the Southern Costa Blanca and beyond are invited to the Autumn edition of Expo Torrevieja, on Saturday and Sunday October 26 and 27, where a special zone has been set aside. The event is free to join and open to everyone, no matter how small or large a group you may be. With an estimated 8,000 plus visitors attending the last Expo Torrevieja, it's a perfect opportunity for local clubs, hobbyists, sports teams, theatre and performance groups, lunch clubs, charities, religious organisations, fundraisers plus national and international associations to promote themselves and what they do. There are over 250 clubs and associations to be found on the Torrevieja.es official website alone, and an estimated 300 to 400 more in the region, both the clubs and visitors to the Expo can find out more about one another under one roof. Expo Torrevieja is working closely with the Town

many like her. Laura is studying English and Journalism at Coventry University, and during a recent visit to her grandmother contacted San Fulgencio Town Hall to find out as much as she could about the flooding and how it affected many local people. Laura plans to write a blog following a chat with Councillor for Tourism and International Relations Darren Parmenter, with the intention of informing a wider audience of the experiences of the people of the Vega Baja.

"It was a pleasure to meet Laura who posed some very well-thought-out and mature questions," said Darren. "She was particularly interested in those British citizens that had been most affected and with the wonderful response from the local community in the immediate aftermath." The elderly Spanish couple in their eighties were helped in the first few hours of the flood emergency by San Fulgencio Social Services as the husband needed to be transferred by ambulance to a property on the Urbanisation sourced by Councillor Samantha Hull.

Cross border Community Spirit The N332 team have already signed up Hall to put together a definitive list of all the local Clubs and Associations, and everyone is invited. Already signed up are such popular groups as the N332 traffic advice team, with information about driving in Spain and traffic law, assisted by the team from Torrevieja Translators, who are extra busy helping residents transfer their driving licences preBrexit. Expo Torrevieja is one of the main supporters of Rock Against Cancer plus other local Pet Rescue and involed with findraising drives for those affected by September's Gota Fria. If you'd like to join us at Expo Torrevieja on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 October, please drop an email to: Keith@ExpoTorrevieja.com, with Clubs and Associations in the subject line. Doors are open from 10:00am until 3:00pm on both days. Admission is Free, as is participation for all Clubs and Associations. Look forward to seeing you there.

ONE of the most positive aspects of the recent floods that swamped the Vega Baja has been the incredible community spirit shown by many people. This has been particularly true in San Fulgencio and the Urbanisations who have pulled all the stops out to help those in need. Last week, a six-strong team from the MUNA neighbourhood association (their ages ranging from 66 to 79-years-old) helped remove a considerable amount of ruined furniture and white goods from a property on the San Fulgencio/Dolores border.

The pair only had the clothes they left with and over the coming days were kept a special eye on by MUNA, in conjunction with the Council, to ensure they had enough food, clothes and vital supplies of medication during their temporary stay. "They were so appreciative of what everyone did for them," said MUNA President George Scammell, "that we wanted to carry on helping them once they were able to access their completely destroyed home. That's why we organised the working party and we plan to go back and assist with the full clean-up soon." HELPING HANDS: The MUNA ' sextet' in front of all that remains of a once beautiful property. She also suggested that the opening hours could be extended as the office is only open for a maximum of 4 hours a day and only 2 hours on Wednesdays.

Newly laid astro turf ripped up in Rojales By Andrew Atkinson Astro turf newly laid by the Ayunmiento de Rojales has been ripped up by thieves!

At midnight on Wednesday, October 9, the first songs could be heard as the popular Sevillian singer Beret began to play and sing tracks from his latest album, Ápices.

NEW home owners have been robbed - in broad daylight - with burglars using a car jack to rip out a metal grill, removing a locked shutter, before smashing windows to gain entry.

In the afternoon there was a contest of games in which local clubs participated as they attempted to overcome various tests of water, agility and strength and then late at night, the “Crazy Colours” colour party, organised by the Department of Youth was held, in which hundreds of young Pilareños took part.

The incident occurred in La Herrada, Los Montesinos. Passports, money, jewellery and clothing were taken. The local Policia attended the scene and are continuing with their enquiries.

The leader of Torrevieja Ciudadanos (Cs), Pilar Gómez Magán, has criticised the poor service being provided by the "Pangea" office of International’s Residents, Coexistence and Integration about which she says that "Users state that the procedures necessary to obtain authorisation for temporary residence are very slow.”

Installation of astro turf in Rojales on Av. Onda was undertaken by the town's works department, to improve the image of the Vega Baja town.

According to people using the office, "the procedures are not being carried out, by the PANGEA office, with the speed required and is often much longer than the maximum period of one month that the current immigration law states must not be exceeded".

It is the second robbery in the same street, with a neighbour targeted last year. The latest robbery comes after a pensioners' home was robbed. A warning has been made by Community Presidents on La Herrada, to be vigilant. A statement said two males were active in the vicinity, looking at properties and also attempting to open car doors. Last week at a house in Doña Pepa a grill at the back of the house was pulled off and four men wearing balaclavas, one reportedly carrying a gun, broke in. After ransacking the house they left with a jewellery case and its contents. There have also been similar burglaries in Lo Crispin, San Miguel, Torremendo as well as further south in the Costa Calida. In Torrevieja and Pilar de la Horadada Police have also intensified their prevention and surveillance services of the Oriolan coast. Goods stolen are known to have been sold across the Vega Baja. In June The Leader reported that the Civil Guard had made arrests, following robberies in Campoamor.

"We ask for the collaboration of all our neighbours in the quest for improved maintenance of public spaces," added the spokesperson.

Pilar de la Horadada celebrates Valencian Community day was celebrated in Pilar de la Horadada with a paella contest followed by a free giant paella for the whole town. Valencia Community Day in Pilar Ciudadanos has raised a number of issues Gómez Magán, says that “she is not aware what training the staff have to carry out,” but that the regulations and criteria to be followed are changing. "It is essential that both staff and officials in this area have a global knowledge of all this because, they have to give accurate advice." Ciudadanos Torrevieja has raised a series of issues that "can make the operation of the International Residents office much closer to the ideal service that should be provided".

Los Montesinos Fiesta By Andrew Atkinson The Los Montesinos Fiestas Patronales 2019 Great Parade and Floats put on a spectacular display in front of hundreds of people in the Vega Baja town. "I want to thank all the people, groups and entities that make the Fiestas possible," Los Montesinos Mayor Jose Manuel Butron told me. On Saturday October 12 the procession in honour of the Patron Saint the Santisima Virgen del Pilar, accompanied by the Queen of Fiestas and her Court of Honour, along with local authorities takes place at 8pm. A magnificent spectacular fireworks display will also take place. Spanish tv star Maria Jesus and her accordion will perform at the Plaza Sagrado Corazon at 11pm, with the popular Barraca performance, by international artist Cristian Deluxe.

The Fairground was full to overflowing with local residents who had come out to enjoy the celebration arranged by the Department of Fiestas.

C’s Torrevieja denounce poor service at International residents office

"An act of vandalism against Municipal public spaces has occurred, with the theft of 90 metres of turf," a Ayunmiento de Rojales spokesperson said.

Another scam which seems to be with us once again are the unofficial 'cold callers', approaching homeowners, saying they are from Utility companies, gaining access to properties, before being robbed. *THE COURTYARD RESTAURANT Los Montesinos. Of baling-twine and blasting-wire

Y

ou all know the story of the kingdom being lost for the want of a nail … a simple horse nail. Let this be a lesson to you to never underestimate the value of small and simple things.

Even in this modern age of computer-this and electronic-that, there are many people like me who would be lost without a piece of baling-twine around the yard. If you have never known the satisfaction of having a length of baling-twine, or a piece of blasting-wire at hand – let me explain what you are missing! A length of baling-twine is about two metres long. You get two such lengths of this ultra-strong string when you cut open a square bale of hay. It was made from hemp in the past, but is now a synthetic cord made from fibrous material and wax. During the fodder season I save baling twine in an old half barrel. From here a limitless supply serves a thousand uses for the rest of the year. We shall revert to the blasting-wire further down, but for now let us dwell on some of the many uses we put the baling-twine to. In order to gain full advantage from this tip, may we assume that you never go out the door without a pen-knife in your pocket No matter what gets broken around the yard, the first thing I think of is the baling-twine. Temporary stock-proof fences are erected by tying a few old pallets together. Broken barbed wire is joined from the small ball of the twine I carry in my working coat pocket, or from the cab of the tractor. Leaking gutters are tied up and gates are tied closed. A suck-calf is hobbled for dehorning and the electric fence wire is handled away from where it is ‘earthing’ … and all with a solitary loop of baling-twine. I pull on my rain gear and the pants is inclined to come down in the rain (now … now …Lads!) until I tie a length of twine around my waist and ‘the job is Oxo’. The roses, lovingly tended to by Mrs Youcantbeserious are becoming a little unruly and she doesn’t want to prune them yet. Enter stage left, a husband trailing a twine and before you can say ‘smell the roses’ every last bud is secured in a perfect shape. The other day, as I was ‘trickin’ around in the yard, I was jolted out

of my meditation by a loud ‘clatter … clatter … bang … bang’ outside my front gate. Arriving at the scene I found a young driver in ‘a bit of a fix.’ The exhaust had fallen down from its holding underneath her car. ‘I’ll phone my brother’, the lady said. ‘No need for anything as dramatic as that’. Sez I. Two minutes later I was kneeling by the car and in five minutes the exhaust pipe was back where it belonged – thanks to youknow-what.

only we had a roll of blasting-wire!’

Oh … I almost forgot; we used blasting- wire for setting off a blast as well!

Don’t Forget

A month after Bill left, I got a package in the mail with a yellow bow and a Canadian post-mark. Inside was a reel of mining blasting wire! I don’t know how it got through customs or why I wasn’t arrested! At that time there was dreadful waring going on in the north of Ireland. The good thing is that for years afterwards I had a choice between baling-twine and blasting-wire. How good can it get!!

A spool of blasting-wire could have landed me in big trouble. Let me explain:

You can’t always judge a dinner by the price.

Sometime in the early 1980’s an old Canadian friend came to Ireland and stayed with us for a week. I had worked with Bill Elliot in the Canadian mines and we got on really well. When Bill came I was a busy farmer and he, having grown up on a farm in Saskatchewan, had a huge interest in all that was going on and being a part of the work. During the course of the week, the blasting-wire became the theme and no matter what went wrong, either of us would lament; ‘if

Most of you will not be familiar with blasting-wire. Blasting – wire is the baling-twine of underground mining – where I worked for a few years It is bright yellow in colour and comes on a spool. Blasting-wire is strong and pliable and without it the shift would come to a shuddering halt. We used it as a clamp to repair the water hose, a piece on the jacket lapel kept manners on the lamp cable and it made a good handle for carrying a lunch-pail. Air-pipes were tied up with blasting wire and broken ladders were tied down. The scoop-tram needed a roll of blasting wire on board and any man who ever lost a pin or a button, solved his problem with a little piece of yellow wire.

between 12-18 months. The breeding and development will enhance the threatened loggerhead turtles species, especially in attaining growth and strength. Nine of ten quelonios, previously monitored and subsequently released into the sea in 2017, survived. From 1,000 loggerhead turtle eggs laid and hatched, figures show only one turtle survives, under natural conditions, due to various predators and conditions.

Threatened Loggerhead turtles monitored

By Andrew Atkinson

TEN loggerhead turtle eggs - from a batch of 66 - laid this summer on the beach of Cala Arturo, in the Calblanque Regional Park, have been sent to the Oceanographic Centre of Valencia. The Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Environment sent the baby loggerhead turtles - Caretta caretta - to follow their development and to analyse the general strategy for management of nesting on the Spanish coasts. From the 66 loggerhead turtle eggs laid in the sand, 21 offspring were born. 11 are at the Marine Aquaculture Centre of the Murcian Institute of Agricultural and Food Research and Development (IMIDA), in San Pedro del Pinatar. The remainder have been transferred to Valencia by technicians of the General Directorate of Natural Environment. The baby loggerhead turtles will be fed in the 'Arca del Mar' centre in Valencia, where the evolution and behaviour will be monitored,

RBL Poppy Appeal launch in Benidorm T

he launch of the RBL Poppy Appeal 2019 will take place in Benidorm on Friday 18 October in the presence of the mayor, and longtime supporter of the RBL, Sr Jose Pérez.

will no doubt once again be the star attraction, certainly in terms of photo opportunities, so don’t be shy. I am sure that they will be delighted to oblige.

He will be accompanied by Ms Kate Green, Overseas Team Lead of the RBL Worldwide, British Consul, Ms Sara-Jane Morris, and both Capt Jonathan Beaney RM and Cdr Ed Dunn RN, who will be representing the Defence Attaché in Madrid.

Here in District North, Spain, the RBL Poppy Appeal will be aiming to exceed the 2018 total of 176,000 euro, monies that will enable the Legion to continue its vital work in delivering life-long support to Service and ex-Service personnel and their families here in Spain, through hardships, injuries and bereavements.

Two other regulars at the head of the parade will be Wayne Campbell and Skippy Teasdale, from the Royal Hospital in Chelsea. The pair have been attending the launch for the last four or five years and will be easily recognisable in their bright scarlet coats. They

Every euro received in Spain will be used in Spain where it will make a real difference, not only to the lives of Service men and women and veterans that live amongst us, but to their families as well, who can also experience difficulties dealing with the circum-

stances of a loved one who is serving or who has served. So make your donation and wear your poppy with pride in the knowledge that you will be supporting your local Armed Forces community, past and present, who have done so and who will continue to provide an incredible service to our country. The launch will be preceded by a short parade from Calle Castellon along Paseo de Levante to Rincon de Loix, Benidorm. It gets underway at 12 noon and will be led by the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums, along with standard bearers from across the many branches that make up Spain District North. Do go along and show your support to our veterans on the day. Your attendance will be extremely welcome.

Poppy Ball raises important funds for local Veterans Organisers Mary and Malcolm Rusbridge

The Orihuela Costa and District Branch of the Royal British Legion held its annual Poppy Ball recently at the Castilla de Conesa in San Miguel de Salinas. Almost 200 people attended the event which included a 6 course meal and entertainment by local favourites, the Campoverde Reef Band.

The event raised over 1400 euro for the Branch Appeal which will be used to support those veterans and their families who find themselves facing difficulty here in Spain. Malcolm and Mary Rusbridge organised the event for the second year running along with Evelyn Harrison and Joe Pesce who managed the raffle. The castle really is a superb venue that had everyone in awe as they arrived for the pre ball reception. There was the taking of photos aplenty as the guests made the most of the resplendent surrounds before moving into the magnificent ballroom for the main part of the evening.

Orihuela Costa standard bearers in Benidorm will be Carl and Nicola Louden The demand for photographs with our two visiting Chelsea Pensioners, Wayne and Skippy, also seems to increase year on year, but the pair, as ever, were delighted to pose for the camera as people were genuinely excited to have their snap taken with the men in scarlet. The whole atmosphere was absolutely first class, and was the excellent meal. The Reef Band were their usual exceptional selves, playing music that fitted exactly the mood of the evening, and more importantly, enjoying the evening alongside the guests. It truly was a memorable evening.

A thumping 11-1 home victory against Trinity keeps El Capitan firmly in top spot after 3 weeks. The " Pirates " only success coming via Ron Chadwick D16 in the 3rd leg trebles. At that point Trinity must have thought a result was possible. The remaining 9 matches however went the way of the league leaders in a barrage of scores

including 2 x 180, courtesy of Shane Denness and Eddie Klimonis, my hasn't Eddie improved over the last season or two? A total of 31 tons or more from Capitan, was pretty impressive by anyones standard, Pirates reply was a meagre 9. Sid Cross enjoyed a tasty 110 game shot against that experienced old stalwart Johnie Walker and yes he does frequent a tipple or two. Cross missed his chance of a famous victory, Walker taking out D20. Nigel Justice was once again prominent in the scoring department, 5 x 100, 3 x 140, Walker 2 x 100, 1 x 121, 1 x 123, 1 x 123, 1 x 140. Top Pirate score came frpm Yvonne Rouffignac 140 in a fine last leg performance against maximum scoring Klimonis. Denness 2 X 100, 1 X 180 was nominated MOTM as was Pirate Cross. Hi Life welcomed the " Loungers " from Chemies to their first home game of the campaign. The hosts edged the trebles 2-1 only for loungers to level after some very consistent scoring from Blilly Dolling and Tony Spiers. The remaining 2 pairs went to the hosts, Hi Life owner Gino Rouzee racking up plenty of decent scores to include a 140, partner Sandra Crabbe outing on D10, making the half time score 4-2. Les Adams 100, 121, and D10, D4, increased the score to 5-2 in the opening singles. Rouzee continued his fine form with a D20,D2. The hosts 6-5 up with one to play relied on skipper Roger Phips to take the match and points. MOTM Rouzee and Dolling. A busy Ale House entertained neighbours Hyenas in a real see saw div 1 encounter. The opening 3 trebles were pretty devoid of scores, the visitors racing to a 3-0 early lead. Only Dario Sierra125, Lee Holtham 100 and Paul Durrant 137 managed 3 figure scores. Joe Miller D16, D4, and Cyril Harrison D10 completing the 701. Sierra 100, D6, D20 reversed the trend in the fourth with partner Alan Havelock. A 134 in the 5th from Durrant was complimented by partner Bob Taylor finishing on D18 and D16.An indifferent closing 6th pairs should have gone the " Lads " way, Andre Wing 101, 125, and Ben Lane D20, not taking any advantage of their opponents poor finishing, Miller going out on D1 twice, sums up the leg. At 1-5 down a loss seemed inevitable , however, 2 opening 2-1 singles victories from Jim Gray 2 x 100, D2, D7, and Havelock, D3,D4, narrowed the scoreline. Durrant 3 x 100 ensured at least a point in his 2-0 victory over exuberant Wing. Sierra pounded the T20 in the fourth singles gaining a deserved win over Holtham 2 x 100. Harrison D8,D8, earned the Hub both points, despite not recording a ton, opponent Karl Mallinson 100, 123 and a D4, not quite achieving his usual form. Mark Lynne, 100,100,closed the match on D2 against a luckless Taylor for the " Lads " fourth singles, the match lost in the first half, just the lone doubles victory. Lads MOTM unquestionably Sierra, great performance, Durrant for the Hub. Milo's gained both points , winning the required 7th after only 8 legs, courtesy of Dennis Byrne D1, in their encounter with the Chicks of Chemies. The visitors opened their account with a decidedly dodgy out of D20, T18, D2, what Paul Annakin was aiming for is anybodys guess, but the important 3rd arrow did go where it should. Outs from Milo Byrne on D20, D10, gave the away team a 3-0 advantage, the same player making it 0-5 on D8. Andrea Kelly stopped the rot and blushes on D14 for a 1-5 score at the halfway point. The next four went to Milo's for 1-9 . With 2 legs remaining the Chicks finally got their act together winning via Wynne McTavish D10 and Sue Collier D20. MOTM Milo Byrne and

Winnie. The Hellraisers hosted their first home game of the season against the Chicks of Ale House.. The trebles were closely fought, the " Raisers 2 just edging it after 3 on 2-1. Captain Cheryl McGlynn taking the first. Gill McCarthy finally hitting the dreaded D1 to go 2 up. Linda Sharkey reduced the deficit, nailing D8 with her second arrow. All 3 pairs went the hosts way Sue Spiers D3, McCarthy D4 and Linda Davies D1 for a commanding 5-1 advantage before the break and captains delicious chicken and broccoli bake, however no mention of Cheryl's superb cakes for dessert, standards slipping down at the Hub. Chick, Paula Kenyon, resumed the match and making it two for the visitors on D5. Any thoughts of a revival were short lived however as McCarthy D20 and Davies D1 made it seven for the Hub and 2 valuable points. Sharkey pulled one back on D2 against a high scoring Les Dolling, giving the Chicks three, only for Spiers and McGlynn completing the match both on D1. MOTM Gill McCarthy and Yvonne Richardson. Linda Sharkey a close second. Some magnificent scoring in the league this week to include a further 2 x 180 from Graham Solomon ( Toppers ) and Lee Walters ( Las Rosas ), Obviously the new dartboard at home is working Mr Solomon.

Player Spotlight Featured player this week is none other than league secretary Simone de Lacy ( B.Sc. R.P.S.G.T. , E.S.T. ), not many have an alphabet after their name , smart lady. Born in Wimbledon, Simone spent many years there but refused to pick up a tennis racket, much preferring other pursuits. Nowadays darts takes up much of her spare time turning out for Tipsy Toad Tiaras, Gap Ladies and Bar Liquid plus plenty of practise with other half Phil. Leisurely strolls for them both, preferably downhill, take up any remaining spare time. Prior to her nine years in Spain she achieved consultancy status as a Clinical Physiologist and director to include sleep and respiratory services at both Guys and St Thomas hospitals in London. Over here ( l don't know where she finds the time ), she is still active in sleep technology via her ex Presidency and directorship in the same field. Bet Phil doesn't suffer from insomnia. Simone boasts 4 cats and a dog at home and enjoys time with her 4 grandchildren and 2 sons. Also listing skiing, badminton and Tourettes as keen interests, the latter very useful when chatting to her favourite dart player Alex Nikolov.

Pearl of a Day for La Marina Bowlers By Suzi Cooper On Saturday a team made up of invited players played against La Marina to celebrate their 30th Anniversary. The team was made up of players from 9 different Costa Blanca clubs, from Calpe

although the Invitation team (The RSVPers) managed to win on 5 of the 6 rinks with my own team being the only friendly team.

San Miguel Bowls Club

Following the match we were all treated to paella & cava. The Counsellor for San Fulgencio gave a short speech about the 30 years since La Marina BC opened, and names from the past were Pat Bowers, Rosie Sweeting, Tom Powell, Bill & June Young.

By Barry Jones

The only blot on the day was our Captain Allen Bowen ending up at the hospital at 8am this morning after our cat decided to bite him & hit a vein, resulting in 3 stitches and meaning he had to withdraw. Thanks to Helen Johnson for coming in at the last minute so we could still field a full team.

Celebrating 30 years & Finca Guila in the North to Country Bowls in the South and other clubs in between.

The team were made very welcome by the La Marina players and the match was played in a lovely spirit, competitive but still with an amount of frivolity (especially on my rink – where if we hadn’t had bad luck we wouldn’t have had any luck at all). The result was unimportant

Quesada Bowls Club By Jim Donnelly Sponsors: Spanish Life properties, Abbey Wealth management, Ibex insurance, Avalon funerals, Simply Doors, Mosquito screen company After a hectic couple of weeks with the Valencian championships, we got back down to internal bowls and the new league season. Tuesday saw a very good day, as the weekly “bubble” competition held a fun bowls day followed with an evening of merriment in the clubhouse. I think it is fair to say that a good day was had by all. The San Luis Open 2 Ball Trips was played on Saturday/Sunday last. Jacqui Johnston, Harry Johnston and Kevin McKenna (a former Quesada player) won the event, beating Keith Jones, Sabrina Marks and June Jones in the final by 8 shots to 7. Well done to them. This week also saw the opening fixtures in the Southern league. Swans visited Vistabella, where they managed to win on all rinks, getting the maximum 14 points. Excellent result. Swallows hosted Mazarron miners. Quesada came out on top here also. They also got maximum points winning on all rinks. Another excellent result. All in all a good week for Quesada bowls. Vistabella Bowls Report. On Wednesday the Winter league team did not fare well. At home to Greenlands Bowls Club with only one rink winning thus losing 2-10 with 70 shots for and 106 shots against. To help with their travel expenses the Laguna Tavern in Entre Naranjos has sponsored the team many thanks to them for their help. This Thursday there was a mini-match at home between two Vistabella triples and a visiting team from Wales, the Cardigan Bay Bowls Club. The match was played in a very pleasant and enjoyable atmosphere with Vistabella winning both triples 25-10 and 26-11. Cardigan said they really enjoyed the games and would like to come back again next year. Friday saw some mixed results Vistabella Conquistadores had a blank sheet against Quesada Swans 14-0 with 72 shots for and 118 against.

El Rancho Bowls Club It was good to see the start of the winter season leagues, with glorious weather a welcome change it would appear from our friends who spent the warmer season in the UK. I always look forward to seeing all our players coming together, our opponents too. Our first match for the Mustangs was at home against the strong Vistabella Lanzadores, who gave us a stiff but fun game. The Lanzadores took the rinks by 4 to 2 and the overall shots by a small margin. Irene Thomson, Eddie Thomson and Richard Lee 14-19. Judy Foley, Mick Cox and Jim Gracie 17-7. Ann C Taylor, Denise Morgan and Bob Morgan

Some tight games though, losing by 4 shots on two rinks and by 1 on another. Vistabella Lanzadores did well beating El Rancho 10 – 4 with 108 shots for and 97 against. Finally Vistabella Picadors did themselves proud beating La Manga Crusaders 14 -0 with 163 shots for and 66 against . So a mixed week of ups and downs but all matches thoroughly enjoyed. How about coming and have a go at bowling we would be pleased to see you. We can arrange a free session and lesson . You could get hooked it’s a fabulous game and a very sociable one you’ll meet lots of new friends. Also bowlers are most welcome, we have a brand new green and are looking for new members. LaMangaTorre CC win Annual T20 Festival Salute to Nigel Benn! NIGEL Benn - 'The Dark Destroyer' -set for a dramatic return to boxing after 23 years in retirement - says it's all about him and the need for 'closure'. "This fight is all about me," said Benn, 55, who visited Alicante this year in 'An evening with Nigel Benn' at the San Miguel Castle. Benn, who retired in 1996, after losing against WBO super-middleweight champion Steve Collins, is to fight Sakio Bika. Sydney, Australia based 'The Scorpion' Bika, 40, is a former WBC World Champion.

LaMangaTorre CC winners of the 2019 Annual T20 Festival. By Andrew Atkinson LaMangaTorre CC hosted and won their annual T20 Festival, in support of the Tom Maynard Trust, with six teams participating in the 2019 event.

LaMangaTorre CC, Stansted CC, Penydarren Country XI CC, Morton Colliery CC, Cardiff CC and SW Bandit CC played at La Manga Club. LaMangaTorre CC defeated SW Bandit in the Final. Catches from A. Court (2), A. Alger, C. Wood, K. Wood and two run-outs from T. Knowles kept SW Bandits score at 128/8, off 20 overs. Wickets: C. Wood, C. Rumi, J. Perman, O. Jarvis, G. Porter and K. Wood.

In an exclusive interview with Benn, he spoke about his time in the Army: "I served for four and a half years in the British Army as an Infantryman with the 1st Battalion, Royal Regiment of Fusiliers," Benn told me. Benn was stationed in West Germany for three years, then Northern Ireland during the Troubles for 18 months. The Royal Fusiliers later made appearances in Regimental uniform at certain Benn fights, in homage to their fellow comrade-in-arms.

Nigel Benn with Andrew Atkinson Undefeated Welterweight for the First Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers during 1982-84, Benn won titles, up to heavyweight, and trained others in his Regiment's boxing team. Reflecting on his time in The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, Benn shouted out his Rank number - and saluted me during the interview in the noughties. The Benn v Bika fight is at Birmingham's Resorts World Arena on November 23: "The fight is about the closure I never had. "I had issues, including that of my brother who died, and I suffered with depression. "So much so, I don't know how I got through the fights - and became world champion," said Benn.

LaMangaTorre CCs batting partnership of J. Perman and O. Jarvis put on a strong start, prior to Perman out, lbw. T. Knowles batting ticked along, with wickets falling in the last three overs. LaMangaTorre CC needed six runs to win - off the last over - with S. Khan hitting the six runs to gain victory. "It was a fantastic tournament with scenes of celebrations. J. Perman was awarded Bowler of the Tournament, with brilliant batting and bowling from the team," Kieran Wood from LaMangaTorre CC told me.

SAMM SAILORS HELP GOTA FRIA VICTIMS The majority of SAMM’s (the Sailing Association Mar Menor), sailing activities are centred on the Spanish sports centre CTD in Los Narejos, which became home to 200 people evacuated from Los Alcazares after the disastrous Gota Fria. Many SAMM members quickly answered the call for volunteers to help with the cleanup of flooded and mud chocked homes, wielding brooms, spades and other implements with gusto. Others donated furniture and food or sent a donation direct to the disaster relief fund set up by Los Alcazares town hall. Others sent their donation to the SAMM treasurer and, with the 200€ donated from club funds over 600€ was raised.

Reports of the tragedy experienced by SAMM members are heart-breaking, one expat women they helped managing to save only her two dogs and a few items of clothing when the deluge struck. Solsona opened the scoring for the host team. Although there were no further goals in the first half, the floodgates (not literally this time!) opened up after the interval.

Three goals in only 7 second half minutes, helped Thader record their 2nd victory of the season last Wednesday morning.

Sunday morning, plunged Thader back to square one. This home match was originally scheduled to be played away at Callosa, but as their ground is unfit for play, it was switched to Rojales. Following an evenly matched first half, the hosts fell behind to goals from Silvar (66), Angel (80) and Salva (89), eventually losing 0-3. A change of goalkeeper saw Galvez replace Sergio for his league debut, hoping to reduce the number of goals that his team had been conceding since the season began.

By the time Calderon added a 4th on 75 mins, Thader were home and dry. This long awaited victory, the first since opening day triumph at Alicante Uni, propels the men from Rojales out of the relegation zone.
