Keeping people safe and informed for over 18 years - The Costa Blanca’s oldest ‘FREE’ English language newspaper

HE HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE who used to pass daily along the pedestrian path in front of the Bella Vista urbanization in Cabo Roig are currently unable to do so, and despite the City Council's promise to reopen the Aguamarina walkway for the summer season, following it’s compulsory purchase of the land, the new Orihuela council announced during last Thursday’s Plenary Session that it would not be possible, with the deputy mayor, José Aix, blaming the Partido Popular for not carrying out the correct procedure.

Aix, who is also the Councillor for Heritage, was responding to a question raised by the Cabo Roig y Lomas Neighborhood Association. Last December, the Council closed the paseo, in compliance with a court ruling, forcing those wishing to move between the two points, a distance of approximately 60 metres, to make a detour of two kilometers to get to the beach. Shortly after the walkway was closed, the previous Councillor for Heritage, Rafael Almagro (PP), announced that based on

the general interest, the administration had the option of expropriation, stating that the matter would be resolved and it would be reopened before the summer. For this reason, the neighborhood organization asked Aix if that commitment would be met, to which the deputy mayor said that his intention is to "reopen it as soon as possible." However, he said that it would be impossible to meet a summer deadline, in that the procedure has not been moved forward by the previous administration. We must remember that he, of course, was a part of that previous administration, in which he also served as the deputy mayor, and in which he and his Ciudadanos colleagues voted against a CLARO/Cambiemos motion decrying the paseo’s closure. Now, however, he seems to have joined the increasing number of politicians who are seemingly not averse to performing a Uturn! Beforehand, Almagro had told the Spanish press that there had been a number of meetings with the community of Bella Vista owners, but without any positive results.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE ONE PASEO DE AGUAMARINA The residents of the Bella Vista urbanisation built a wall in 2013 to close the path, running along the top of the cliff face, directly in front of the gardens of their homes. In 2015 the former Town Planning Councillor, Antonio Zapata (PSOE), ordered its demolition, a procedure that the court declared illegal.

Hence, to comply with that court order, the Council was forced to restore the wall to its original state, and the walkway was closed again last December.

Unfortunately, many holidaymakers are still not aware that the walkway is closed, and day after day family groups can be seen walking from La Regia and Aguamarina, down Calle Agua, fully ladened with their chairs and sunbeds, and usually with their children in tow.

E-mail office@theleader.info

As they walk through the unfinished Aguamarina Park they are greeted by the walled off promenade, forcing them to turn around and in the oft blistering heat, walk back along the route that they have previously travelled.

MONKEYPOX & EU TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS

About 160 cases of monkeypox have been confirmed in nine EU countries including Spain, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, France, Sweden, Italy, and the Netherlands. In addition, cases have been confirmed in other countries such as the United States, Canada, and Australia, while the outbreak was first identified in the United Kingdom.

Furthermore, three positive cases have been recorded in Belgium, with the local media reporting that the cases were traced back to the festival Darklands. Belgium is the first country to impose a quarantine for such cases, as those have to be isolated for 21 days. Contact cases are exempted from quarantine requirements but must remain vigilant and avoid contact.

Monkeypox is considered a rare viral infection, which has a mortality rate of less than four per cent among humans. However, getting infected with the virus could be accompanied by chills, aches, and fever, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

Denmark reported its first suspected case of monkeypox on Monday, and the suspected person had reportedly recently returned from a trip to Spain.

Once the fever breaks, a rash could be noticed, which can be itchy or painful, and wounds can occur on the face or genitals, with the symptoms disappearing between 14 to 21 days. There are 85 cases of monkeypox in Spain, according to the Health Ministry, including 25 new cases confirmed on Thursday, with another 73 people currently being tested. The majority of these cases have been traced to an adult sauna party in Madrid and another pride festival on the Canary Islands. Minister of Health Carolina Darias said Spain would buy monkeypox vaccines as part of the EU joint vaccine purchases and confirmed that the west African strain, which has a fatality rate in about 1% of cases, was the one detected in Spain. Spain's neighbour Portugal confirmed nine new infections on Thursday, bringing the total to 58, the majority being young men. Portugal's health authority DGS said the country was taking steps to establish a vaccine reserve through the European mechanism and was considering vaccinating the contacts of confirmed cases and health professionals. Italy has recorded four cases, with two of those reportedly staying in the Canary Islands, where the outbreak is believed to have started.

Just like Belgium, the United Kingdom has also introduced a quarantine requirement of 21 days for confirmed cases, according to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). As of Friday, a total of 78 cases had been confirmed, with the first case also being reported in Scotland last week. scientists said the virus may have been circulating unseen for several years. Most of the infections detected globally so far have not been severe. Many, but not all, have been reported in men who have had sex with men. Symptoms include fever and a distinctive bumpy rash. Although only a few countries have introduced travel restrictions, the regional director at the World Health Organisation (WHO), Hans Kluge, has warned that stricter restrictions should be applied in the EU. “As we enter the summer season… with mass gatherings, festivals, and parties, I am concerned that transmission could accelerate,” Kluge said. On the other hand, the number of positive cases with COVID19 throughout the EU has been dropping, with the countries lifting their travel restriction as the summer season kicks off.

Brits fake documents in order to stay in Spain The national police are in investigating four Britons who have reportedly counterfeited padrón documents in order to gain residency status following the exit of the UK from the EU, possible fraud in some post-Brexit residence applications. The investigators found that at least four requests made for residency used fake documents. British citizens who want to apply for a residency permit in Spain under the Withdrawal Agreement must prove that they were living in Spain before the end of 2020. In order to prove this, they need to present their padrón certificate or private medical insurance. The same source reveals that the four British citizens being investigated are all based in the Canary Islands. One has been arrested while investigations into the other three are still ongoing.

Crevillente to Help Taxi Drivers with Fuel Costs Crevillente plans to allocate 10,000 euro to help local taxi drivers deal with the increase in fuel costs as a result of the outbreak of the war caused by the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. Josep Candela, the Councillor responsible for the Mobility department, explained that this allocation was initially contemplated in the municipal budget to deal with the implementation in the municipality as a bonus for short journeys, such as the movement of citizens to the Renfe train station.

However, given the situation generated by the war in Ukraine, it has been decided to articulate aid for the group of taxi drivers, "as has been done with other sectors", according to the Councillor. In Crevillente there are six licenced taxis: “Due to the uncontrolled increase in the price of fuel due to the war in Ukraine, we have valued that the aid was without compensation this year, in order to support a sector that is important to continue providing the service ”,

affirmed Josep Candela after holding a meeting with the taxi drivers in which the draft of the new taxi ordinance adapted to

the current regional legislation was also approved, where the rights and duties of this service are marked.

ARRESTED FOR ABANDONING NEWBORN SON The Civil Guard has saved the life of a newborn baby in San Isidro who had been abandoned by his mother on the side of a road, shortly after giving birth in an abandoned property.

The baby was found in an abandoned house in San Isidro

An Almoradí patrol quickly arrived at the scene, a vacant lot next to an industrial estate in San Isidro. The civil guards found the woman described by the trucker. She seemed to be fine although she categorically denied the story provided by the witness, in addition to refusing to

Torrevieja's €8,351 low average annual net income in Spain By ANDREW ATKINSON Torrevieja has one of the lowest average annual net income in Spain, at e8,351 per inhabitant, revealed the Urban Indicators 2022 study, published on May 23, by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

The mother, a 37-year-old Swiss citizen and drug addict, has been arrested by the Civil Guard and after appearing in court in Orihuela she remains in prison charged with a crime of abandoning a minor. The events occurred on Saturday at around three in the afternoon. The driver of a passing lorry notified the Civil Guard that he had seen a woman walking with her legs stained with blood and carrying a bundle of blankets in her arms. The man told the police that he was convinced that within the blankets he had seen the tiny limb of what seemed to be a baby.

The data comes under the umbrella formed by a City and its municipalities of labour dependency. Alicante remains amongst the areas with the lowest income in Spain, per inhabitant, with Torrevieja, Elche, and Benidorm amongst the city metropolitan areas with the lowest annual income by inhabitant, which also includes Gandia, in the province of Valencia. Despite the statements, the agents found contradictions in the woman's statements and moved with her to a ruined house where she had spent the night. After inspecting the area, about a hundred metres from the semiruined house, the patrol found some rolled-up blankets on the ground behind some drums at

the side of a dirt road. Upon unrolling the bundle, the guards found the newborn baby, who still had his umbilical cord. Initially they thought he was dead, but after applying pressure to his chest the baby responded, so they called back the ambulance, which had left after the mother's refusal of treatment.. The baby was immediately transferred to the Vega Baja Regional Hospital in Orihuela , where he

was admitted to the Neonatal Unit. According to the Alicante Command, the perseverance of the witness and the Civil Guard officers saved the life of this little boy, whom the hospital nurses baptized as Noa . At the moment, the child is still hospitalised, although his general health is good.

The south of the province of Alicante, in terms of per capita income, from the list of 50 municipalities with the lowest average income, includes five Alicante towns and cities: Almoradí with e8,277; Torrevieja, e8,335; Crevillent, e8,678 per inhabitant and year; Pilar de la Horadada, e9,129 and Aspe e9,159. The Valencian municipalities with the highest average income are Bétera, with e14,708 per inhabitant, and Alboraya, e14,491. AVCRL DEMANDS AN END TO ORIHUELA COSTA NEGLECT THE CABO ROIG AND LOMAS NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION has submitted both short and medium-term plans to the new coalition government with many of them said to be necessary prior to the influx of summer tourists. With elections on the horizon, theAssociation has listed 88 actions to "combat the serious situation of abandonment in which the Orihuela Costa finds itself", prioritising the measures according to needs: 45 of them are short-term (within the next six months) with the balance of 43 to be executed or, at least, started before the end of the current mandate, in May next year. 40% of the measures, 35 in total, are included in the 2019 electoral programs listed by the parties that form the government, PSOE (14) and Ciudadanos (14), and Cambiemos (7), which supported the motion of censorship.

In Punta Prima the sand has not been replaced, repairs are urgently required on the cliffs where they suffer continuous landslides, as along the pedestrian walkway from La Caleta to Cala Capitán and in Aguamarina, where the restoration of the micro-reserve pedestrian path has also been requested.

Waste can lie at the side of the roads for weeks

One work currently in progress is the repair the sinkhole on the La Caleta beach promenade in Cabo Roig, which occurred during the torrential DANA storms in September 2019. It took almost 3 years for work to get under way on the sinkhole

The document includes "an urgent and coordinated shock plan" in the face of the poor state of many of the streets and beaches, in order to "be ready to face the summer campaign with minimum levels of services" to deal with the arrival of over 100,000 visitors. DANGEROUS POTHOLES IN MORE THAN 15 URBANISATIONS

ers and increase the periodicity and the areas where a manual sweep is carried out, especially in the interior urbanisations, as well as the long awaited Ecopark, to be installed by the Vega Baja Sustainable Consortium on the plot assigned by the municipal Council.

Almost three years after the event, and despite the fact that the cost is only a minor amount (47,492 euros), the Department of Infrastructure has finally launched this repair, one of the most demanded actions requested by residents and users. Once the technical project has been approved, which includes the necessary geotechnical study due to the orography of the land, along with the mandatory authorisation of the Provincial Coastal Service, a 15-meter-long retaining wall will be erected, as well as the replacement of the pedestrian walkway. POPULATION INCREASE IN SUMMER Many Costa roads are in a terrible state Repairs to roads and pavements are at the top of the list with many local roads in a terrible condition. The submission demands repairs that are not limited only to patching, with a minimum budget of around 2 million euros. However, the association insists that "if Orihuela Costa is to emerge from the morass in which it finds itself, an average investment of 2 million a year for the next four or five years is necessary". In fact the report identifies 40 roads where there are dangerous potholes in more than 15 urbanizations.

Due to the increase in population during the summer, the demand also asks for reinforcements of the Local Police and the staff dedicated to controlling compliance with municipal ordinances such as illegal dumping on public roads, another of the historical problems Street cleaning needs far more resources and there needs to be an increase in vehicles and staff allocated to the collection of pruning so as to "avoid the situation of last summer", when the dirt and litter in most of the streets was highlighted. There is an "urgent need to replace all broken refuse contain-

Another urgent measure demanded by residents is a reduction of the danger posed when walking across the bridge over the AP-7, with the installation of speed reducers, lighting and clearing the gutter. Its expansion for pedestrians, who are forced to walk along a hard shoulder just 40 centimetres wide, has been pending since the Lomas de Cabo Roig sector was developed in early 2000. In the medium term, the document focuses on the development of an industrial estate "as a complement to the current model, based solely on tourism" and expanding the minimal educational facilities that diversifies training, while reflecting the urban excesses of decades, a review of homes that lack certificates of occupancy and are still to be regularised by the builders, as well as a new General Urban Plan that incorporates sustainable growth and gradual regularisation of urbanizations. Finally the report asks for the creation of a Department of the Coast that will bring the City Council closer to the residents by regular meetings with the associations. With summer just around the corner and with the elections less than 12 months away, the coast has finally raised its voice.

SAT ANIMAL RESCUE

The plan also refers to the need for " gradual and continuous clearing in all urbanisations, throughout the entire year, without waiting for the arrival of August’s agricultural laborers, as has been the case in recent years", in addition to the pruning of palm trees in all residential areas.

But I digress. You don't need a medical degree to work out that the primary purpose of viruses is to replicate, to make a copy of themselves, a bit like many humans hope to do. All viruses are built of the same stuff. On the outside they wear a protein coat, under which is the genetic code for the virus. A mere 30 thousand letters, compared to the average postman's 40 thousand letters a year, plus circulars and compulsory invitations to jury duty.

He was later hanged himself as it happened, and the name just sort of stuck.

I was once granted exemption after claiming to support Dundee United Football Club, clear evidence of a serious lack of judicial ability.

Bizarrely, Lynchburg is in a dry county. Even stranger, in 1998 Frank Sinatra was buried with a bottle of Jack Daniel's beside him. I wonder how much is left in the bottle by now.

Viruses require a recipe to fulfil their evil ambitions, they can't do it themselves, and with 3 billion letters in the human genome, they hardly need to bring their own bottle, the host has sufficient supplies to get the party started, with apologies to Shirley Bassey. My medical degrees from California Beach University must still be in the post -- it was 'buy one, get one free', so I'm also a qualified hairdresser. I've often wondered how that works with other products. If you claim a refund on the first dishwasher, do you get to keep the free one?

Dean, whom I met outside the building, told me that Beach provided distance learning, with no actual attendance required, and he could enrol me "on the sidewalk," which was cheaper (a mere 100 dollars paid immediately) without forfeiting the 2-for-1 offer described above.

Mentioning bottles and parties reminds me that a recent birthday gift from a friend was a quart of Jack Daniel's Tennessee Sippin' Whiskey, although personally I've never been one to sip any brand when there's an e in the whisky. I gathered from the label that Mr Daniel was mayor of Lynchburg, population 361, except when the mayor was out of town.

The distiller Jack Daniel, who was born and died in Lynchburg, seems a more admirable sort of person to name a town after. Although I'm guessing 'Danieltown' wouldn't have been such a commercially viable option as the location for the world's best-selling whiskey, which Jack Daniel's is.

Life sometimes seems like a series of liquid containers, starting with our baby bottle and (for my generation) bottles of school milk, before we moved on to Coca-Cola and later graduated to drinks made with fennel and other medicinal and culinary herbs. Very well, call it absinthe if you must. And what are our present-day phials of vaccine, if not tiny bottles? The Heart of the Matter … t is many a poor unfortunate ‘scrut’ I have known who has fallen head over heels in love. Beautiful young maidens have also regularly succumbed to the headover-heels-in-love affliction. But none of these afflicted beings will ever profess to the object of their affections that they love the other with all of their head or all of their heels: They each express love for the other with ‘all of their heart!’ That it is the brain and not the heart that regulates this said same love, doesn’t even get a mention.

I

Monday 30th May - Sunday 5th June 2022

said that “the only thing greater than the power of the mind is the courage of the heart!” If a person is said to have a ‘big heart’, it means that they are kind and generous. This is just another example of how we feel about our most vital organ; and certainly, our most vital organ it is. The work rate of the heart is phenomenal. This ten-ounce workhorse works 24/7 pumping blood – the red gold that is the source of life, through about 60,000 miles of blood vessels. That is almost unbelievable – as is the fact that your heart beats around 35 Million times every year.

The heart is the symbol of love – even though the popular beautifully shaped symbol bears scant resemblance to our real heart. ‘I love New York’ has the heart as its trademark logo – even though the city is known as ‘The Big Apple.’

Because the heart is our most vital organ, it is little wonder that more people die from heart failure than any other cause. And yet, there are none of the other organs that we can do as much for by way of ‘servicing.’ We need to help the heart stay strong and healthy through keeping an eye on what we eat and doing some exercise – not too strenuous is best for most of us.

It isn’t only love that the heart symbolises. It is also drawn down as the badge of courage. ‘He has the heart of a lion’, is the greatest tribute that can be paid to a warrior in any manner of battle. ‘The team showed great heart in the second half’, you will hear proclaimed by many a GAA team manager between now and the end of July. Nobel winner, John Nash,

Mind you, there probably isn’t a real right way to exercise. One theory is that because the heart is a muscle, the harder you work it, the stronger it gets and the longer it lasts. The counter argument is that the heart, like the moving part of any machine, only has so many ‘beats’ in it and you can either use them up fast, or spread them out!

I don’t know; but what I do know is that after I took up playing squash at the age of 37, a leading British heart specialist wrote that, “Nobody over 35 should play squash – even if they have been playing it all their lives.” I continued playing competitively for a further 20 years and I think that exercise has served me well. Modern medicine and medical advances are keeping more people alive for longer – and not least those with heart problems. Being aware of family history and other preventative steps, prove the old adage that ‘prevention is better than cure.’ And speaking of ‘steps’, there is nothing better than a daily walk to help keep the old ticker ticking over. A friend of mine died a few week ago – and he was no ordinary man. Chris received the blessing of enjoying a generation with his family that he would never have known in any other generation. GARDEN FELIX - Lilac Syringa Vulgaris Lilac Syringa Vulgaris - tree lilac - is a classic garden shrub or small tree, part of the olive family bearing panicles of fragrant, tubular, single or double flowers, in shades of purple, pink and white, from late spring-early summer. Flowers are excellent for cutting, edible too, with many cultivars to choose from, some compact and suitable for smaller gardens or pots, while larger types can be grown as a standalone specimen. Easy to grow, Lilacs can grow around 30-60cm in a year, thriving in moist well-draining soil in a sunny position, given an annual mulch in spring. As the flowers fade towards mid-summer, dead-head spent blooms on smaller shrubs. Prune shrubs to desired height and shape, after flowering, to prevent from getting leggy and dead, diseased or dying wood.

beyond recorded history. It is the centre of Ireland and truly the heart of the country. Hundreds of years before Tara was ever heard of, the rulers of the five ancient provinces met here to pass laws and participate in pre-Celtic rituals. There is a huge boulder at the summit, known as ‘Aill na Mireann’. This stone symbolises the entire island and beneath it is said to be the resting place of Eriu, the goddess of Ireland. David and Angela Clarke and a small

Lilacs respond well to hard pruning and you can cut the whole plant back to around 1m above ground, as they flower on the previous year’s wood, but you will lose the flowers for at least a year. Alternatively, remove some stems, over a period of two or three years, cutting back to the ground, ensuring you still enjoy some spring flowers. Propagate lilacs from softwood cuttings or from suckers, that often sprout from the base. Dig them up with some roots attached and re-plant. Lilacs are generally problem free, but may be attacked by lilac leaf mining moths or thrips and Lilac blight. Pruning out affected branches, well beyond signs of infection, in dry sunny weather, may help, improving air circulation, helping to control spreading. Poor flowering in spring could be due to poorly drained soil, or not enough. Late frosts can also spoil flowers.

A NEW RECORD HIGH FOR FUEL PRICES A barrel of Brent, a reference in Europe, was trading at around 114.5 dollars on Thursday, while American Texas oil was being exchanged at almost 111 dollars a barrel. The average price of unleaded in Spain has reached a new all-time high this week, 1.94 euros per liter, figures never seen before, for the second consecutive week, while diesel, despite falling 1 0.06%, to 1,867 euros per litre, is still more expensive than the European Union average (1,856 euros per litre).

PAGE 11

Despite this, the relentless rise in fuel prices in recent weeks has 'eaten' much of that aid. These prices shown at the pump do not include the government discount of at least 20 cents per litre which brings the average price down to 1.74 euros per litre in the case of unleaded, and 1.667 euros for diesel, although these figures are not be entirely correct, as there are higher discounts from some of the oil companies. Compared to a year ago, the average price of a litre of unleaded has increased by 43.7%, while in the diesel is 54.3% more expensive. These prices are recorded in an environment of constant rises in crude oil in the current world market, as a result of the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. Thus, a barrel of Brent, a reference in Europe, was trading at around 114.5 dollars on Thursday, while American Texas oil was being exchanged at almost 111 dollars a barrel.

However, the prices paid by consumers at the pump are rather lower, due to the mandatory 20 cents discount approved by the Government.

The move was good both economically and health-wise", adding that "talking about the hospitality industry is talking about a strategic sector. José Aix explained, “For a long time we have worked side by side with the proprietors in Orihuela, districts and Orihuela Costa, to help them when it was most needed, particularly in

the midst of the pandemic, favouring an expansion of the occupation of public roads.

“We are now installing vertical signage in the area that corresponds to the terrace and adhering once again to the ordinance, so that there are more public spaces where you can park”.

has shocked parents, and myself, who see it as disgusting, as it is aimed at an audience for school children as young as four. The book is called ‘My Body is Growing’ written and illustrated by Dagmar Geisler, a 64-year-old woman. The book is penned as a 'guide' for children of up to eight years old to 'learn about their bodies and how to perform sexual activity between male and females along with descriptive pictures.' This is not about teddy bears - it is a pornographic book aimed at the very young and quite frankly I do not understand what enticed a sixty-four-year-old to write such an expressive book for the extremely immature, about people coupling, including the final event in the sex act with graphic pictures, other than to satisfy some personal desire and need within her. The wording and descriptive text in the work is too detailed to repeat here - in a newsagent it would be on the top shelf with a brown cover and an ‘X’ on it – but then what do I know?

Insurgents A long time ago, well perhaps not that long ago, as we are talking the 1980’s, there was a very funny programme on television called ‘Yes Prime Minister’ starring Paul Eddington as James Hacker, the Prime Minister with Nigel Hawthorne as Sir Humphrey.

and driving licence applications still waiting to be processed, removing the difficulty from thousands of people waiting for that documentation. They should stop playing politics, as it is nothing more than that, and get the country moving again.

The Flasher

The story line was written in a clever and humorous way, based on how Government worked and the ability of the civil service to modify or change the thoughts and instruction of the elected party in power.

In the twenty odd years we have lived in Spain we have watched the Hondon Valley grow from a group of small hamlets into thriving communities with quaint individual houses, some as holiday homes but in the main for retired people.

Sir Humphrey played the Head of the civil service in the series and the story line resulted, by the use of clever words, in changing the meaning of new regulations being proposed by the Prime Minister’s Cabinet, and demonstrating in an entertaining way how democracy does, or in some instances doesn’t work.

The response by the individuals of the Valley and others in the surrounding areas, has been remarkable in supporting the people of Ukraine, with twenty-six cubic metres of goods collected for their cause, and taken to the Dream Centre in Hondon de los Frailes.

At the time it was a fun show and watched by masses, a giggle of what could be happening behind the closed doors of the administration in Westminster. How, in that period would anyone have thought that the events in the show would become reality all these years later, with the present Government having difficulty in getting its measures complied with because of the insurgent people, who should be dealing with the day-to-day requirements of a powerful elected majority in the Commons.

Also living in the Valley is Dave the Flasher, as he likes to be called. Dave is proud of the appendix of his name of being a flasher as he paid e60.00 for the privilege. He was on a short journey out of the village and he quite inoffensively used his headlights to warn another driver of a checkpoint and was fined by the police for the privilege of doing so.

Not only are these so-called ‘servants’ – yes I know that is an old fashioned word but they are supposed to be civil. It also sums up my feeling of these ‘professionals’ who should be at their desks, not working from home but in their office dealing with the mountain of passports

The items were transferred to a holding hub in Torrevieja and then on to the country in need.

Bewildering There are not too many day-to-day happenings which I find annoying or gross, however most of those bad feelings are about how the very young children are treated. A book has been published on Amazon which

637 227 385

office@theleader.info

The whole point about bringing up children is not about the excitement of the reproductive organs, it is indeed important that they should be schooled in love and caring for one another, the total opposite of the angers and desires of the body that will come later. The rearing of children, as we all know, is difficult enough without the interference of outside bodies who have their own agenda to satisfy. In this column I have referred to the unfortunate who have confusion in the mind in the question of where they fit in society. I am sure some of this bewilderment is caused by their upbringing where the standard family of Mum and Dad does not exist - for that reason, which is in my opinion, it must be difficult to bring up a balanced youngster if you have a personal disagreement or a pet hate. There has developed another way of thinking by some of medical professionals in that they can physically change a person’s body sexually, and whilst I am sure they do so after careful study, surely any such action should be very limited to the very mature. Otherwise, as Dr Michael Webberly, a fifty-five-year-old discovered, when he was found guilty by the Medical Practitioners Tribunal for his transgender treatment of seven patients. Three of them – and one was only nine years old – committed suicide.

Inflation It was a tasty double sandwich – not in the sense that it was larger - it cost twice as much as a similar one the week before. With inflation in Spain at 9.2% how come an item can suddenly cost fifty percent more? Take care www.facebook.com/percy chattey

Connor Wood was the pick of the bowlers for La Manga with 3-18, and cameo Court returning 2-25. Madrid ended up 63 runs short, with La Manga Torrevieja CC gaining two match victories.

Madrid’s opening pair of Dan Walker and Anand Kaul, saw Kaul bowled in the second over in what was a cautious start, with skipper Galileo Finlayson-BlО (10) joining Walker (16), before both were removed by the impressive Paul Harvey. Harry Young (41) showed impetus between the wickets along with Patrick Telford (19), with five overs remaining. The pair ran well between the wickets achieving 137-5 after their 20 overs, with Paul Harvey taking 2-22 off 4 overs, along with a catch and the wicket of Joe Healey (11). Madrid took wickets from opening pair of Tommy Knowles (51) and Ravi Panchal (19), with Akshay Sharma taking Spanish international Panchal, clipping the top of his offstump. Daniel Everett (32) and Knowles crossed the line with an over to spare, giving LMTCC a convincing nine wickets win.

On day two Madrid CC vs Torre Pacheco CC, Madrid asked Torre Pacheco to bat first. Skipper Gali changed ends for the opening fixture, and found his areas more consistently with Akshay Sharma miserly from the other end. Abbas (13) and a plethora of extras (40) making double figures, with Jon Woodward, taking 3-3 in his two overs and Akshay Sharma, conceding a paltry six runs in his four overs, also snagging a wicket of his own. TPCC closing their innings on 80-7. Wicketkeeper-batsman David Stilton (16) and all-rounder Guy Thistlethwaite (8) steered Madrid home, with 6 overs to spare. Madrid winning by 8 wickets.

In the second fixture LMTCC saw Madrid win the toss, with skipper Gali electing to bowl first.

In the second game Gali won the toss and elected to bowl first, scoring 35 for the first wicket.

Knowles (19) rode is luck with dropped chances in the field, before Dan Walker caught, from the bowling of Gali.

Youngster Sehnaz was stumped by Stilton, off the bowling of Patrick Telford. Abbas (21) followed after a catch from James Bentley, off the bowling of Finlayson-BlО. Partnerships began to flow, as the batsmen targeted Telford and Woodward. Amarjeet (32) and Jitender (29) took TPCC to 131-8. Madrid noted bowlers were Telford (3-23) and Woodward (3-41).

Panchal’s (82*) included six 6’s and three 4’s on his way to 82*, with Everett continuing good form (41) before being caught by Walker, off the bowling of Aussie quick James Bentley. Panchal and Adam Alger (34*) completed the innings, giving Madrid a target of 203 to win the second fixture. Madrid got off to a blistering start in reply, with in-form Harry Young (65) and Dan Walker (12). With the score at 107-3 with seven overs to go, the departure of Young after some fine

Madrid’s reply saw Young and Healey both out for one, however Victor Medina (28) and Abdul Hakim (19) putting together a partnership of 48 runs. Madrid went on to a five wicket victory.

TWO CHAMPIONS FOR COLINO RYTHMIC GYMNASTICS CLUB

Last weekend, the Individual Autonomous Championship was held in Gandía, where five competitors from the Jennifer Colino Rhythmic Gymnastics Club took part. In the alevín open competition, Anastasia Salkova won the silver medal in the general category, and was crowned as Regional Sub-champion, achieving a place in the Spanish Championship.

SAMM RACING IS BACK After many cancellations success as SAMM has now managed to start their Spring racing season. The races went well except for a couple of minor incidents.

In the infantil category, Miley Martínez, won the gold medal in the general and on the apparatus, becoming the Autonomous Champion, and qualifying for the Spanish Championship.

The format was Average Lap racing and for the 14 competitors on 8 boats the Race Officer set a sausage style course, going north through start line to top buoy leaving it on the port side then back to the start line starboard buoy also leaving that to port. Race 1. Start 11:30. Wind at start 3.5 knots. A nice clean start tacking to the buoy then returning, some confusion going through the line but Martin on the safety boat sorted them. Great tight racing and plenty of overtaking as the breeze picked up to 6.6 knots and changed direction. On the finish line Ginnetta picked up the starboard buoy and took it with them, Martin recovered it and put it back so that Scirocco could also do it (they like those buoys).

Lucía Leshan Cañas Mendo, made her debut in the 1st category, becoming Autonomous Champion. Tatyana Shevchyk, took part in the same category and won the silver medal and finished as Regional Runner-up. As a result, both have qualified for the Spanish Championship.

Results were first Sirocco (Julian Pering), second Shoestring Dos (Diane Hardwick/Brian Murray), third Shoestring Omega (John Down). Race 2. Start 12:55. Wind 6.5 knots then to 8 then to 9.5 so the water started to get lumpy towards the end. A good start by most and plenty of action during the race, a few penalties taken for touching boats to hitting buoys etc. but a good friendly race and great spirits at the end. Results were first Shoestring Dos (Diane Hardwick/Brian Murray), second Laser Standard (Tug Wilson), third Shoestring Omega (John Down). Interested in sailing and SAMM? Four gymnasts from the Torrevieja club have qualified for the Absolute Individual Spanish Championship to be held next June in Ourense

Lucia Leshan and Tatyana Shevchyk with their coach Jennifer Colino

In the Junior category, Claudia Ticehurst, finished in 10th position in the ball, clubs and tape exercises.

We won 2 games our Ladies singles, Mo Kidd won 21-13 which was nice to finish with a win after last week's result, and our rink won 18-11. Don and Jean Fowkes have been formidable these last couple of weeks and today they were ably supported by Kath Manning and Wendy Latham. We lost the other 3 games but with good close scores to give a 88 shots each and 1 extra point each. The overall score being 5-7 but Oh does it prove that every shot counts, every rink on both sides I bet could have got that 1 extra shot – well done all and thanks for the entertainment – roll on October.

Monday 23rd saw Greenlands Gladiators playing host to Emerald Isle - Victors in the South Alicante Summer League, Hurricane division, a good match, with Greenlands winning on 2 rinks and The Isle on 3 rinks. For Greenlands Les Davies, Dee Charters-Byrne & Mick Kirby had a decisive win, beating The Isle 22-6 and Veronica Richards, Barbara & Roger Farrington won 18 shots to 11, with the other 3 rinks only dropping a total of 9 shots this gave Greenlands the overall shots advantage, so the match ended 6 pts each. This keeps Greenlands in third position in the division and only 2 points off from the leaders. Wednesday 25th saw Greenlands Jasmins take on St Louis in the VCL away. The winners were Andy Miles in singles 21-9, Sue Bosworth and Dave Morrison, pairs 18-15 and Deb Perryman, Bert Ewart and Pearl Houghton, Trips 23-18. With only 2 games of the South Alicante summer trips league remaining, both our teams top their respective divisions. In div 1, Blenheims earned a useful 6-6 draw at home to San Miguel Moors, failing to win overall shots by just 3. These 3 rinks did what was required - C Highland, C Brazier, P Farrell 17-13. G Carnell, V Campbell, F Roberts 21-15. B Trinder, C Dye, T Morgan 20-13. Twas a similar scenario for div 2 side Lancasters, who also drew their match at La Siesta, but lost overall by 4 shots. Against the Wasps, it was these ladies & gents

Although not to everyone's liking, in view of the number of ravines and expanses of water that have to be successfully negotiated when teeing off on a number of holes, Font Del Llop is a fair test of golf to both novice and experienced golfers alike. After the game we returned, as usual, to the Lo Crispin Tavern, where welcomeTapas was eaten and the day's prizes awarded.

Despite a stiff breeze at times, conditions were good which contributed towards the generally good scores achieved on the day.

It was a very warm day yesterday at La Serena, thankfully the wind got up by early morning to take some of the heat out of the day. The weather is really fantastic for the new greens and once again the grass takes on its green hue after the long winter sleep. Bruno, Miguel and all the team have to be congratulated as the course is in superb condition. The greens are running through and are at 10 on the stimp meter. SAN LUIS BOWLS CLUB Another warm week to get through, and the heat goes on... LLB South Alicante Spitfire Div. Hurricane Div B: Hercules, had an even worse day, with not enough available players (through unexpected circumstances) we had to drop 2pts & 10 shots before the match started and our team was away at Country Bowls against a strong Red Kites team so not quite the result we hoped for, 0 points-12, 53 shots-97. VCL Southern Div A: Falcons, on Wednesday 25th were away v San Miguel Sheriffs. The shots were very close; 8287, 4 points-8. So, with Andy Reid winning his mens singles match 21-17, Carol & Keith Lowry successful in the pairs (21-16), plus Sheena Barnes, Tony Welsh & Steve Hibberd triumphant in the trips (22-16), QBC Tigers came home with a very pleasing 7-5 victory.

With only a few more matches left, we haven’t got a lot of time to gain many more points but, as usual we will keep fighting to the end!! San Luis BC welcomes new members of ALL playing abilities, we hope they would be willing to sign up before the end of August, so we can plan how many teams to enter for 2022/23 season. Currently we have 2 teams (1 in A Div. & 1 in B Div.) in both Friday Southern & Monday South Alicante Leagues. More new members would allow us to add a third team; so room for all. CARP R US ANGLING This weeks Carp-R-Us was fished at the Embalse de Argos and formed part of the clubs Murcia series. For a change the match was fished in hot, sunny weather, something we’d become unaccustomed to over the last few months. The embalse has received lots of water over the last few months and was a couple of feet higher than last time we were there and slightly coloured. This was also the day we said goodbye for a few months to our Welsh members, Doug and Alan. The match was fished with half the field on the

sunny side and half on the cooler side.it was unfortunate that a local fisherman was already in position on the pegged stretch despite the clear notices saying there was a match on. He refused to move so pegs had to be adjusted to accommodate him. The winner of the match was Alan Davis with an excellent 40.38kg from peg 10 on the sunny side. The next three places went to anglers on the cooler side with Doug Hornblow making it a Wales 1-2 with 36.60kg from peg 1, with Alan Smith third with 30.04kg and Ian Brown fourth with 29.02kg. All the top four fished pellet with slow sinking feeder. It’s pleasing to report that all ten anglers who fished, caught.

THE NULLARBOR LINKS: The world's longest golf course. 18-holes and par 72, it spans 848 miles from the former gold mining town of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia to the fishing port of Ceduna in South Australia across the mighty Nullarbor Plain. It can take 5 days to play, in either direction. The idea is that after playing one hole, you drive to the next, but the next can be 100km further down the road. The idea was conceived by roadhouse owners along the A1 Eyre Highway, trying to encourage drivers to break their journey and spend money. Each participating town or roadhouse offers a green, a tee and a fairway of sorts, with clubs available for hire, together with a free map. Current High and Low scores for the course: High – 479, Low – 70. Dust, dingos and 48 degree heat, or biting 60mph winds from the South Pole, and astroturf greens. St. Andrews it isn't. If you start from Kalgoorlie holes 1 and 2 have fairways and decent greens. You stay overnight, then drive 440km, playing the next 5 holes. No. 3 is at dusty Kambalda Golf Club. “Don't go left mate,” they warn you, “That's death adder country.” No's 4 and 5 at the Norseman Club, site of a worked-out gold mine, then 106km further on at the Fraser Range sheep station you play the par 3 6th. After hole 7 you camp overnight. There are funnel web spiders and snake warnings (3 deadly varieties. ) On day 3 you drive 446 km playing holes 8,9,10 & 11. You spot the odd camper van or HarleyDavidson with clubs strapped on the back. The Cocklebiddy Roadhouse has a population of 8. This is the Outback. If the flying doctor is needed,

SEBASTIAN SODERBERG was in the Belfry clubhouse on the final day of the Betfred British Masters waiting to hear whether he would be in the playoff against Thorbjorn Oleson. After Olesen holed a 28-foot eagle at the 17th and sank a 35-footer at the last to salvage a one-over 73 it would not be surprising if poor old Soderstream stayed in the clubhouse and got paralytic. The same could be said for Chile's Mito Pereira who needed a par to win the PGA Championship and drove into the water for a double bogey. Life is hard.

I stated that this was probably creating more questions than answers as the Spanish Golf Federation appear to have made this decision without engaging with the golfing public at large and boy was I right. Below are just a few of the questions and comments made by some of our readers: This is just someone else trying to take a slice of the golfing pie.

What is the cost to join the Spanish Golf Federation? How do you join the Spanish Golf federa tion if not a member of a club? Are private golf insurances acceptable? Who will monitor the situation? Will golf courses stop you playing if in pos session of an NIE or TIE but not a member of the Spanish Golf Federation? While I can answer most of these questions and comments it is not my position to do so the Spanish Golf Federation and the golf courses need to have a co-ordinated approach to implementing the instruction and to inform the wider golfing public. Already there are cracks appearing in this process and by example:

Two week’s ago our golf society played a course in Murcia and they requested the €3 payment for the daily licence but yesterday at another course in Murcia they refused to take the fee (saying they were now breaking the law by doing so) which saved the players €3 but left them without any personal liability insurance. So I ask you a question, the next time you stand on the first tee of a golf course here in Spain do you have personal liability insurance for damage or injury to property or persons and what happens if you do have a problem? I am sure that this issue has some way to run and will attempt to keep our readers updated as things develop and if these proposals are legalised and implemented by our local golf courses.

SO NEAR YET SO FAR AS THADER GIVE THEIR ALL Despite the playoff defeat this has been an excellent season for Thader

Patacona CF ........0 CD Thader ...........0

later, an audacious overhead bicycle kick by Dani Lucas, sailed over the bar.

I

n the picturesque setting of seaside town Patacona (not dissimilar to Guardamar), Thader came so very close to forcing extra time.

Patacona were by now somewhat rattled, culminating in justified bookings for overzealous tackles. On 70 mins, the hosts again thought they should have been given a spot kick, for a foul in the box, but once again the ref was unmoved.

This Preferente league play off semifinal 2nd leg, was finely poised, with the hosts taking a one goal advantage from last week's match at Rojales. The local council had paid for 2 coaches to take players and fans up to Valencia, for this hugely important fixture.

Dani had a glorious opportunity to square proceedings on 76 mins, but from close range he shot wide, then on 83 mins, it was Thader's turn to appeal for a penalty for hand ball, but without success.

On the supporters coach, there wasn't a spare seat to be found, in fact, one ticketless fan had to be turned away. A pleasant mix of local Spanish and Brits made the long journey to the north of the province, one to remember! By the time we reached our destination, I was not only ready for a cold beer, but also some temporary tranquillity to relieve my throbbing head (well, I am getting on a bit). Local diversions meant that both coaches were delayed, not ideal match preparation for captain Lloyd Dummett and his team. Considering this match was in readiness for promotion to national league div 3, I was shocked at the lack of facilities within the stadium. On a red-hot day, there

As time ticked away, Chema made a breath-taking save to keep Thader in the game. Then with the very last move of the game, Calderon headed wide. was very little shade provided from the sparce seating area, although the grand stand behind one of the goals had a decent vantage point. Thader manager Raul Mora elected to start with 2 of last week's absentees (Rafa & Quino), but surprisingly left Pedro on the bench. His men didn't know what hit them, for within the first 10 mins, Patacona had twice hit the post and had goals disallowed for

offside. Having weathered the storm, Quino forced a worldly save from host keeper Lucas on 15 mins. There were strong appeals for a penalty when a Patacona striker theatrically went down in the penalty area on 32 mins, but thankfully the ref was wise to his antics. Miguel became the first player to be booked, Thader's big centre back tak-

ing no prisoners whilst making one of his fierce challenges. Pedro and Konate were introduced for the start of the new half, with Calderon and Juan also making substitute appearances later in the match. These changes seemed to have the desired effect, for Thader forced 2 corners in quick succession, although neither came to fruition. Javi headed just over on 63 mins, then 2 mins

Seconds later, the full time whistle signalled jubilant home fans invasion of the pitch. Not to be outdone, Thader fans applauded their heroes off the pitch, then continued singing on the drive home, long into the night (ever listened to a live Spanish football radio commentary - it's manic!!). Following a magnificent season, CD Thader will host their end of season presentation and meal on Friday 10 June - further details to follow.
