Record crowd drawn to Cabo Roig St Patrick’s Day Parade

Over ten thousand people flocked to the Orihuela Costa on Sunday where they were treated to the biggest and the very best St Patrick’s Day carnival held in the nine year history of the Cabo Roig parade. Since those early beginnings

in 2011, when less than 4,000 people saw Sligo Co. Councillor Jerry Lundy march at the front of the cavalcade, a small contingent from the Irish business community have worked tirelessly, year on year, to turn the event into one of the greatest showpieces of it’s kind in Europe.

Now listed by National Geographic as 9th best parade in the world, and still climbing, watch out Dublin as Cabo Roig moves ever closer to overtaking even your event held in the Irish capital. With almost 40 groups taking part in the parade, one of the

most notable being the Moors and Christians contingent from Orihuela city, this was undoubtedly the most colourful and uninhibited parade that we have ever seen marching through the streets of Cabo Roig. Continued on Page 4

The employees of the cleaning and waste collection services of the City of Orihuela, one of the few cities in the Valencian Community where the service is operated by the town council, have decided to call a strike at the beginning of April.

are all up to date.”

At a meeting held on Monday morning they said that it is the only way by which they can get the attention of the mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, to listen to their demands regarding their lack of equipment and facilities, as well as their status and seniority. The workers have now voted to strike in order to get some response from the mayor, after last week’s meeting between the unions and the councillors of Human Resources and Road Cleaning, ended in deadlock.

They are simply asking for their depot at Puente Alto to be upgraded, which has been in an atrocious condition since 2007, and the headquarters in Orihuela Costa, a site located in a green area, and that doesn’t even have any toilets.

According to the two councillors, during this term "the workforce has been strengthened with the recruitment of additional drivers and payments for both normal hours and for overtime

However a union spokesman said that his workforce is not seeking improvements to their salaries. Their demands are focused on measures to improve the terrible conditions and facilities from where they operate.

They are also denouncing the state of the fleet of waste disposal trucks, some with more than 20 years of service, as well as a requirement for cleaning carts for labourers. “The strike is only about the appalling conditions in which we work and the unsatisfactory state of the equipment, machinery and vehicles with which we have to work” said a union spokesman.

Two months without pay for Care Home workers Cleaners from the Torrevieja Care Home got the opportunity to speak to mayor José Manuel Dolón on Tuesday as they entered the 4th week of their ongoing strike. Dolón listened to their concerns for about 30 minutes, during which time he heard that the workers have not received either salary nor overtime payments from their employers 'Netalia Servicios Integrales, SL', for over two months. He explained that the Care Home is the responsibility of the Generalitat, which awarded the cleaning service to the private company, so it is only they who are able to intervene. However he did say that he would address the treasury and the vice presidency, both by letter and by telephone, to "pass on the concerns of the workers and ask for a quick solution to the dispute." In writing to the Generalitat Dolón said that he explained that the company 'Netalia Servicios

Integrales, SL', has caused serious damage to the economies of their families and that he has now asked the Conselleria to "arbitrate in order to resolve this labour dispute to avoid greater damage to the employees and those residing in the Care Home ". Although some minimum services have been maintained, primarily the laundry service, piles and piles of the patient’s dirty clothing continues to accumulate, causing many of the 200 residents having to make do with dirty towels and bed linen. The strike affects 15 cleaning staff who are employed permanently in the centre plus a small number of temporary operators.

A new season of visits to Las Salinas de Torrevieja Torrevieja Councillor for Tourism, Fanny Serrano, said that a new season of guided tours by tourist train will begin at Las Salinas, an initiative that was launched only last year but one that has reaped amazing success, with more than 30,000 visits. Now the responsibility of the Department of Tourism, the schedule of departures will be at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00, 16:00 and 18:00 hours. Tickets can be purchased at Paseo de la Libertad, in front of Plaza Waldo Calero. Like last year, the visits will cost 7.95 euros for adults and 6.95 euros for pensioners and children between 2 and 12 years of age. The guided tours will last about 50 minutes. Along the route, which takes visitors through the different phases of salt production, sightseers will be able to listen to a commentary both in Spanish and English which will provide information on the characteristics of Las Salinas, such as its origin and its fauna, as well as the reason for its characteristic pink color. The train also makes a stop inside the facilities in which tourists

can take to take pictures and even climb one of the characteristic mountains of salt. Fanny Serrano said that" we must also thank the work that has been done by the current operators of Las Salinas, the French multinational 'Salins du Midi', which has extensive experience of tourist visits to its farms in the French Camargue. " For all this, the councillor of Tourism has encouraged "both new and old visitors return to enjoy these visits, as we have many surprises from the industry and salt extraction prepared for this new season."

Continued from page one St Patrick’s Day in Cabo Roig Led by Grand Marshall Big Joe Egan, once described by former World Heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson as ‘The toughest white man on the planet,’ there was no shortage of music and drinks, dancing and laughter, as the community invited all comers, whatever their nationality, to join in with the local craic. Representing the municipality of Orihuela were the councillors for Tourism and the Coast, Sofía Álvarez, who has done so much in circumnavigating municipal bureaucracy, and Luisa Boné, along with the Councillor for health, Noelia Grao. At a short ceremony prior to the parade getting underway both Sofía Álvarez and Ruth Egan, wife of the Grand Marshall, were presented with flowers by the organising committee.

At least she didnt have to use flash

With the area awash with blue skies, and as the dignitaries marched proudly at the head, the parade got underway on the dot of 3 o clock. The wheeled brigade was, as usual, made up of a multitude of classic motorcycles, vintage scooters and cars followed by St Patrick himself, and the Irish Prison Officers Band which led the actual parade. Comprising a record number of over 40 clubs, associations, communities, dance schools and floats, the streets overflowed with demonstrations of the many different aspects of Orihuela life. Maria and her Pink Ladies were the chosen aid organisation, meandering through the crowds as they sought donations for their very worthwhile cancer charity, while the novelty acts included colourful stilt walkers, mirrors and punks as well as Brazilian Samba dancers, angels and demons from Valencia, acrobats and performers from the Sparta Gym in San Miguel. There was the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums, Footwork Dance, Benijofar Dance as well as rythmic drummers provided by la Zenia Boulevard There were also veterans from the Irish Services, cartoon characters to occupy the kids, soldiers and cowboys from the wild west, and the best part of a dozen floats constructed and operated by members of the local business community. Earlier in the day a craft, vegetable and artichoke market had occupied the lot adjacent to the medical centre. There were some fabulous costumes and groups and all in all the organisers delivered the spectacular parade that they had promised, culminating with a fireworks display during the early part of the evening along Calle del Mar.

The outstanding bills come to a whopping 15,000 euro on top of the 5,000 euro per week needed to keep the centre going!

ON THE NIGHT OF 6TH MARCH EHCRC received a frantic phone call from the Police in Almoradí: two equines were running wild around the roads, they reported, and they needed help. As always, EHCRC responded immediately. What they found they believe is a little family - mum, a 9 year old tiny little pony and her son, a mule less than a year old. Their vet is concerned that she could also be in foal. Both equines are absolutely terrified and have been appallingly treated. The pony’s hooves are in a dreadful state which has got to be causing incredible pain never mind the long term complications for her health but x-rays will determine the extent of the damage. Once done the farrier and vet will be able to decide on the best way forward. She also has painfully sore skin caused by a parasite infestation, she is terribly malnourished, and has sores on her face from a badly fitting head collar. The young mule has had half of his coat cut or shaved off which has left lacerations all over his young little body. He also has

Latest shocking rescue at Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre scarring on his nose from an ill-fitting head collar. They are inseparable and any attempts to divide them is fruitless. So once they are a little more settled and stabilised these little souls will have further tests, investigations, etc to ascertain their ongoing treatment and care. Sue Weeding. EHCRC Co-founder, said: “The Police as always were very thankful for our help and we would like to extend our thanks to them. Our relationship with the Police, Guardia Civil and local Authorities is increasingly improving as animal welfare becomes more of a priority for those concerned. The Police know we will do everything possible for an equine in need.” Without the services of EHCRC these types of rescue would just not be possible and the Police would not have anywhere to take them. But it comes at a price: currently the basic running expenses for the 120 equines at the Centre are €5,000 per week and that does not include the extras like when an animal needs intensive veterinary treatment, hospitalisation or when fodder needs to be bought in bulk as and when it is available. The outstanding bills at the moment come to a whopping €15,000 on top of the €5,000 per week. Now with two more in need of a lot of care and probably costly ongoing treatment, EHCRC can only keep going with the support of the public. “We already have a fantastic following of supporters and an incredible group of volunteers who help us make all this possible but we need more assistance from more people,” Sue Weeding said. If you can help in any way like donating good quality furniture or donating financially, it would make a huge difference to these animals, every little helps and especially at this time with so many extra expenses. ‘Letters from the Canary Islands’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

Bigger and Better? I wonder if anyone remembers the BBC television comedy ‘Hi-de-Hi’, which was first broadcast in the 1980s? It was classic, camp comedy, which was based upon a fantasy world of a not so glamorous ‘Butlins style’ holiday camp. Looking back, it became a kind of documentary, since I remember visiting a number of British holiday camps that were very similar to the fictional ‘Maplins’ featured in the show. One of the more memorable characters in the show was the ‘Chief Yellowcoat’, Gladys Pugh, who would make regular radio announcements to guests, and proudly announce various events around the “Olympic size swimming pool”. Well, I am sure that Gladys, as well as campers, would be most impressed to learn that the island of Lanzarote has just opened its first Olympic size swimming pool in the town of Arrecife. This project has included the remodelling of Lanzarote’s ‘Sports City’ at a cost of around 6 million euros, and will be the home of the island’s Youth Information Centre. This new pool will be available for top-level swimming competitions, synchronised swimming, as well as water polo.

b y Bar rie Mahoney

Visitors to the Canary Islands Ruth Madoc as Gladys Pugh often imagine that the sea will be warm, but forget that these islands are surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, which is never truly warm enough to swim in. This new swimming pool will be heated from renewable energy sources, making the most of natural ventilation and light. I think Gladys would be immensely proud to announce the pool’s many new facilities to her campers. The current trend to be ‘bigger and better’ does come with a number of risks and challenges. Perhaps one clear example of ‘shooting oneself in the foot’ may currently be seen on the island of Gran Canaria where work is currently underway to build what is touted to be “The Best Water Park in the World”, as well as “The Biggest in Europe”. This massive project and investment is already well underway, and there is no doubt that it will provide many new employment opportunities, which it is hoped will be given to local people. This development is part of an overall plan to provide more leisure opportunities for national and international tourists. Gran Canaria is already a very popular and busy island that is trying hard to enhance its reputation for rural tourism in many of its beautiful, unspoilt and peaceful locations, so yet another, even more massive water park on the doorstep of rural tourism may seem something of a contradiction. It is often reported that visitors are demanding yet more

commercial leisure facilities to enjoy during their holidays, in addition to the many water sports already provided within a natural setting. Whether this is true, and visitors really do want to visit this beautiful island, mainly to enjoy being in the “Biggest and Best Water Park”, at the expense of destroying the natural island character that has been so popular with visitors over the years, remains to be seen. Rojales, a melting pot of cultures The municipal padron in Rojales stands at 17,649 residents, of which 35% are from the U.K. According to the figures about 12,300 are from other countries, 7 out of 10, while the other 3 come from Spain. This means that the municipality, which has residents belonging to 85 different nationalities, is one of the towns in Spain with the highest percentage of foreign residents, a great melting pot of cultures where the inhabitants coexist perfectly integrated into the daily life of the town. Most inhabitants come from the United Kingdom, with more than 35%, followed by Spaniards, around 30%, while Norwegian and German residents make up approx 4.4%. In recent years Rojales has continued to increase the number of its Spanish classes, provided totally free of charge, to attract people who do not speak the language. The town has also created a program of language exchanges, which allows different nationalities to get to know each other and to practice the languages that interest them, while promoting coexistence and integration.

“I heard about the texting service through a friend. As I have a hearing impairment, phone calls can be very difficult for me and I am more at ease when texting people, so it was a great option for me. “Samaritans helped me by listening (well reading!) to what I said and responding by asking questions and offering support.

A comedy of hilarious errors!

“My experience of using the text service was good, even though there were times when I had to wait a while for a response.

HELEN’S STORY “I felt calmer, more at ease, and ready to make my own decisions after confiding in the Samaritans.” Helen used Samaritans’ text service to help her through problems she was having with her partner. Nowhere else to turn “I have contacted Samaritans by text a number of times. It was mainly around the time I was having problems with my (now ex) partner. "I felt calmer, more at ease, and ready to make my own decisions after confiding in them. "I think my life would be quite different if I hadn’t sought help from Samaritans. “I still experience problems with depression and anxiety, but I am much better than I was when I first contacted Samaritans. “The Samaritans’ text service is fantastic, particularly for people like me who have problems with anxiety as you don’t have to speak. I have recommended it to a few of my friends. You can now use WhatsApp to contact Samaritans via CHAT or a VIDEO CALL. Just Call 634 325 906 our Dedicated Line to Arrange. We’re on countdown to the latest ACTS Production – a comedy of hilarious errors! After benefitting from a large and sudden inheritance, The Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society, very inept and largely accident-prone, embark upon an ambitious 1920’s who-dunit with their production of “The Murder at Haversham Manor.” However, disaster ensues from start to finish and this misfit band of actors have to ‘go on with the show’ despite forgotten lines, shaky scenery, wrong cues and unconscious actors! This hilarious, farcical murder mystery playwithin-a-play should not be missed at the Benijofar Cultural Centre. La Marina Bowls Club

with Chris Bould

Last weekend, March 9/10th, saw the Finals of our inter club competitions sponsored by Jennifer Cunningham. The competitors were well supported by the members which was really good to see. All matches were played in the correct spirit of the game which was a pleasure to witness. Reminds me of a saying “ it matters not if you won or lost but how you played the game “.

Thanks must go to David Hadaway, comp sec, and his helpers for organizing the event. Thanks also, to our resident umpire, Peter Bailey. The weekend rounded off with a buffet sponsored by Jennifer Cunningham and created by Louisa, Santiago and staff.

Also on Monday the Explorers we’re away to Quesada Pearls. They came away with one draw, Janet Parsons, Carol Smith, Mike Stone 18-18; one win Anne Stone, Margaret McLaughlin, Shirley Hadaway 19-8. Quesada Bowls Club by Dee Stephenson It’s been a very successful week for the Quesada squads with some great wins and two draws. With just one week left to the end of the Winter season the competition has certainly been fierce as all of the teams and their competitors try to consolidate their position in the league tables. In the South Alicante Winter League, Quesada Pearls put in a strong performance against La Marina Explorers. Some high scoring rinks contributed to a convincing win for the Pearls with a final score of 9-3 points and 100-65 shots. Well done Pearls! Meanwhile on a morning where the wind played havoc with the woods Quesada Diamonds entertained Monte Mar Matadors. A very pleasant morning with nice friendly opposition players. Quesada Diamonds won on 3 rinks and Monte Mar Matadors won on 2 rinks. The shots were 87-70 and the points 8-4 to the Diamonds. And the Rubies, also playing a Montemar team, managed a very close draw against the Torreadors with 6 points each with Montemar winning the shots by a small margin 68-63. In the Southern League Quesada Swans didn't fare so well though, losing their match against

19

Mazarron Miners 10-2 with shots 117-51. The Swallows had a better day winning their match against Greenland Oaks 8-4 with the shots 91-84. And on a lovely sunny afternoon, the Swifts played La Manga Crusaders who had travelled to Quesada. As always a great pleasure to host the La Manga squad, and a lovely game played in high spirits. Swifts won the match 12-0 and the shots were 133-42, which means the Swifts are chasing San Miguel hard and aiming for 2nd or 3rd place in the league to end the season next week. In the Winter league, Quesada also had a good win this week against Montemar winning 8-4 and shots 93-62. And finally, in the last match of the Federated 4’s season, Quesada Panthers played San Miguel Cherokees. In a tough game, the Cherokees were playing for the league leadership but the Panthers put in a fabulous performance and not only held them off for a 4-4 draw but also took the shots 5756. This means the Panthers have finished 3rd out of 5 teams in division 1. Considering we had a basic squad of around 15 to choose from week in week out, with many of the team playing 3 and 4 times a week, Panthers can be very proud of what they have achieved this season. Well done More info from Angie Goddard newleaf2014@hotmail.co.uk

El Rancho Bowls Club Monday morning found the Palominos entertaining the Saturns from Emerald Isle and put in an excellent effort in taking 4 rinks and the overall shots, just the job for the old feel good factor. Helga Schiffman, Janet Wright and David Wright 19-16. Tony Abbott, Debbie Ham and Adrian Ham 15-12. Dolly Ford, Carol Gray and John Richards 16-14. Gary Dunstone, Tony Robinson and Mike Ager 17-21. Ngaio Baldwin, Ann Abbott and Pete Baldwin 21-16. The Pintos were at La Marina playing the Pathfinders were a stiff breeze caused a little consternation, but the Pathfinders took advantage of the home mat, taking 3 rinks to the Pintos 2. But 2 rinks away from home is always a good result. In the afternoon the Raiders played host to Country Bowls Flamingos and also put in a great effort, taking the rinks by 4 to 1 and the overall shots, a great result. Monday morning found the Raiders at Greenlands

playing the elms and put on a good show in taking 2 rinks, a good away result, well done all. Meanwhile the Broncos had a tough fixture at Montemar against the Matadors, always a difficult opponent, though a favourite of mine. Although the Broncos came away without a point, they put in a good effort and played well. The Mustangs were playing host to the Picadors from Vistabella and what a splendid morning’s bowls we had, with opposition leads all over the jack from the start, just shows our opponents just need to try. Though the home team will always have the mat advantage. The Mustang played well, as did the Picadors, but in the end a hard fought match brought all the rinks to the Mustangs. Horadada Bowls Club

we have the man power and most of all we have that drive to succeed.

by Irene Graham

On Friday in the Southern League the Royals were at home to San Luis Leopards. What a beautiful sunny warm morning and it certainly shone on the Royals. Most of the rinks were nip and tuck with the lead changing back and forth a few times. Horadada just pulled ahead in the closing ends. Friday’s result made it three in a row for the Royals. Our winning rinks were: John Goddard, Mick Kirby and Bryan Eatough 20 – 13, Carol Linehan, Wayne Jackson and Sheila Westwood 33 -13 Irene Graham, Alan Miller and Terry Hucknall 21 -16 Dave Bracken, Jack Linehan and Barry Evans 22-10

On Monday in the Discovery Division the Falcons were at home to Vistabella Eagles and we really needed a far better result than what was achieved considering we were playing the team at the bottom of the division. The teams were quite well matched throughout with one rink cancelling out another. It was down to the last rink to finish to see which side got the overall shots. Horadada were holding 5 shots with one bowl to come. Their skip came in with the best of bowls and stole them all from us. We won on 2 rinks and lost on 3 with Vistabella obtaining the overall shots. The final result was 91 shots for to 95 against giving us 4 points to 8 against. Our winning rinks were: Wayne Jackson, Les Davies and Mick Kirby 27 – 19, Tracey Paffett, Ken barber and Roy Thomson 18 – 14 Well played to both of our winning rinks. There are two matches left to play in the winter league, both at home. We can still do this Falcons. There are only 4 points between us and the team above us in the table, so all to play for in these final games. We have the knowledge, we have the skill,

We just missed a clean sweep by two shots. The final result was 116 shots for Horadada to 74 against giving us 10 points to 2 against. Very well played to all of our players. Our last match is against the top of the table, but we are at home so let’s make it count Team Horadada. Horadada offers a warm welcome to new or experienced bowlers, and provides the necessary equipment. Our roll-up days for this friendly club are Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday mornings. Please contact Fred Trigwell on 659 139 129 for more information.

Country Bowls Club by Jo Richardson Firstly, apologies with a mistake made regarding the names of one of the winning teams. Last Monday in the match against El Rancho, rink 3 should have read Graham Richardson, Pat Ray & Brian Ray 44 – 4. Again apologies to Pat & Brian Ray, a tremendous result. The Flamingos travelled to El Rancho to take on the Raiders this Monday. Not withstanding the tricky rinks there was a strong wind blowing, making conditions extremely challenging. As you would expect the home team made the most of the conditions and the Flamingos struggled to show their own craft. In the end it was the ‘old dependable’s’ Graham Richardson, Pat Ray & Brian Ray who collected our only points. Well done. There were some very hard games being fought but sadly the Flamingos came out second best. Better luck next time Flamingos. The Geckos, today welcomed the La Siesta Golds to their club for a return match. Having lost 9-3 away at La Siesta earlier in the season, the Geckos were out for revenge today. La Siesta Golds are currently 4th in the league so it was going to be a tough game but the Geckos

Around and about the golf courses – New Sierra Golf Regular readers of these articles will be aware that we provide an update on the condition and any changes at local courses. Last year we provided you with an update o the 9 hole course at New Sirra course which had opened in the boom years prior to the financial crash of 2008 and which closed for a few years as a result but had reopened two years ago and in the process of recovering it's best condition, specifically in respect of the fairways. Having played the course again last week it is worth providing our readers with an update. The course still represents some of the best value for money in the area with 18 hole greens fees from an agent such as Costa Blanca Green Fee Services still only circa €41 each, including a shared buggy and that isn't available anywhere else locally in high season. The greens are probably the best that I have seen and played on all year and the fairways are now 90% back to normal and have introduced definition between fairway and semi rough. They are still working on some of the bunkers and some of the buggies have seen better days. They do have to manage the cross over point after 9 holes which they appear to do very well and the course and office staff are helpful and welcoming. All in all I would suggest that if you are looking for a good but affordable game of golf in high season you should consider New Sierra Golf.

were determined to take the shine off the Golds!! The game was nip and tuck for the first half with the Golds giving as well as they were getting. At the end the Geckos had achieved their revenge in bucket loads with a 10-2 win and shots of 11664. The victors were: Sylvia Rennie, Jean Turner, Jim Rennie 29-9; Viv Brown, Pat Ray, Brian Ray 28-7; Carole Donnellan, Les Turner, Den Birkett 31-13; Graham Richardson, Pat Emmett, Geoff Paylor 21-15. A great win for the Geckos. In the penultimate game of the season 5th place Country Bowls Cubs had their work cut out against 3rd place La Marina Merlins in their away match on Friday afternoon. Games flowed back and forth and the standard of bowling was exceptional. The Cubs were hoping to take leave with some points in the bag and managed to win on 2 rinks giving them 4 points which was not too shabby a result for the newcomers to the league. The shots were 90 to 72 in La Marinas favour with the overall score being 8 - 4 to the home team. Winning rinks were Joel Fernandez, Agnes Burke, Lynne Bryce and Chris Stevens, Craig Dyson, Andrew Bryce. Thursday 14th March Euronics Darts Men’s Pairs Semi’s and Finals Results

A big thanks to Sid Cross for doing all the chalking and officiating and to Dickie Hunt and Simone for keeping a record of the scores and results. Thanks too to the host venue, Trinity Bar, Rioja Centre. Final thanks to all those that came to support and to the Paddy’s day hats that came in handy for wiping the board and Sid’s spillages! A great night with some very good darts.

The semi-finals of the competition consisted of a round robin, 501, Best of 5 comp as unfortunately one of the qualifying pairs from El Capitan could not make the date of the finals which had not been announced at the start of the competition. So six good men and true representing the Jackals, El Capitan and The Hub Hyenas had a play-off to see the two pairs with the highest number of legs won go through to the finals which was best of 7.

Missing results from last week’s league Match:

Pair 1 was the infamous Alex Nikolov, sporting a rather fetching Peaky Blinder hat, and his Polish Chum Tomek PolskiDolski (who’s real surname I cannot remember let alone spell!). These lads from the Hub faced father and son Eddie and Aroldas Klimonis from El Capitan, the latter of which were nearest the bull and first to throw. A calm start to the comp saw a couple of tons from Alex and a narrow miss on a two-dart out (T15-D20) from young Tom but is was Aroldas who did the business with 6-D20 to take the first leg. Alex (100) and Tom (100, 16-D8) evened things up in leg 2 and despite a couple of 100’s and a 140 from Alex, the Lithuanian duo took legs 3 and 4 courtesy of Daddy Klimonis’ D20 and 15-D2, respectively. Alex and Tom stayed on board to play pair number 3: Graham Solomons and Hugh Galloway of the Jackals and although warmed up, the Hub lads succumbed another 3-1 defeat, effectively eliminating themselves from the competition with no need to play the third round. They did however get another 140 apiece, as did our Hugh, but

Jaguars 4 – 8 Las Rosas. Men’s Pairs Winners Hugh Galloway and Graham Solomons of The Jackals Grahams 5 x 100’s and quick finishes – D2, D7, D16 took the Jackals into the final. The final was Jackals all the way with Graham scoring 140 with his first throw. El Cap were trailing 200 behind when Aroldas scored T20-T20-T19 (177) to bring them right back into contention. Alas for them, Hugh checked out on D4 to take leg 1. In Leg 2, the wisdom of Solomons quickly brought the score down (81, 100, 95, 94) and again Hugh did the business, this time with D3 with very little opposition from the Klimoni. Another 140 and two ton plusses in Leg 3 from Graham got Hugh to striking distance again. Aroldas narrowly missed out on a 122 finish scoring 82 but missing the D20 and Hugh got the Jackals their 3rd leg with D5. The 4th leg

Player of the match for Jaguars was our Patty Poo Schofield who had the only singles win but what a win it was, checking out with D6 for the first leg and then a whopping 133 (57-60-D8) against John Spencer. She also got the finish (D3) in her pairs with Lelly Bear Eagles against David and Antonio. Denise Green got the Jags’ first leg in the 2nd triples with a first dart at D19 and Simone got the 2nd leg in the 3rd triples with D4. Wendy Hayward got a 132, Sim and Lesley got 100 each and Pat had a 100 and 112 to add to that very impressive 133 out. Notable play from Las Rosas came from Jem Gledhill with a T17-D10 finish in the pairs and a score of 132 in his singles. John Boden was pretty handy on the check-outs, particularly his 9-D16 in his singles against Wendy. Man of the Match goes to Terry Brindley who got the Bullies first leg with D6 in the triples and a great T20-T19-D9) 132 out in his singles against Lisa. A lovely night was had with the lads from Las Rosas of San Miguel. Match and comp reports by Simone de Lacy

Carp-R-Us Fishing Carp-R-Us fished round four of their Spring Series at the El Bosquet complex. The weather was excellent if a little cold at the start and a good days fishing was expected. Unfortunately, the fish, in particular the carp, had other ideas and were reluctant to feed. First was Neil McBirnie with 9.70kg from peg 37 with Ian Brown second with 4.45kg from peg 35. Third was Steve Fell with 3.75kg (peg 26) just pipping Alan Smith who had 3.60kg (peg 33). Tiger Roll’s task to retain the Aintree Grand National VINTAGE CLOUDS ODDS SLASHED FROM 40-1 TO 12-1 Tiger Roll and Davy Russell on the way to victory in the Grand National at Aintree last year

The 172nd running of the Aintree Grand National beckons on April 6, with Gordon Elliott’s Tiger Roll, the 2018 winner, looking to become the first back-to-back Grand National winner since Red Rum won the race in 1973 and 1974. "We want to win it again - but Tiger Roll has a very hard task with a lot more weight to carry," said cautious trainer Gordon Elliott, having been handicapped at 11st 1lb. For safety reasons, the Grand National is capped at 40 horses going to post, with various declaration stages during February, March and April. Elegant Escape (11st 4lb) trained by Colin Tizzard, a winner of the Welsh National, has been noted having been back down from 25-1 to 14-1. Willie Mullins trained Rathvinden (10st 10lb) is a proven stayer having won over 4 miles and is amongst the leading fancies at 12-1. Vintage Clouds, owned by three times National winner Trevor Hemmings, owner of Preston North End Football Club, carries a low mark of 10st, and has seen odds slashed from 40-1 to 12-1 in the run up to the

Merseyside showcase meeting. Tony Martin trained Anibale Fly (11st 6lbs) owned by J.P. McManus, finished fourth in the 2018 National and is 16-1 in the betting. Willie Mullins trained Pleasant Company (10st 11lb) runner up to Tiger Roll last year fares at 25-1 in the betting, a good value each way punt. Hemmings also enters consistent chaser Lake View Lad, trained by Nicky Alexander, who features at 20-1 in the betting. Gordon Elliott trained General Principle (10st) the winner of the 2018 Irish Grand National is a 25-1 shot for last year's National winning Irish stable. One For Arthur (10st 10lb) trained by Lucinda Russell, the 2017 Grand National winner, will be the first horse to regain his title since Red Rum in 1977 - if he wins. *The Leader racing will bring you the latest news, with trainers and jockeys comments leading up to the 2019 Aintree Grand National on April 6.

Las Ramblas Golf Society

Gold Cat winners: Colin, Roger & Keven

SMGS at El Plantio. 13 March Thirty-nine members and two guests turned up to play a straightforward stableford competition at a course rarely visited these days by the society. It is quite likely that it may well not be visited at all next year unless it improves significantly over its condition on the day and charges a price reflecting the quality (all agree the layout design is great) of the course. Those who stayed away clearly knew something the majority didn’t. A front nine containing some very uneven painted (!!) greens, semi-rough made up of clumps of weed grasses that hid half of a ball settling on dirt, and large numbers of bare patches on fairways didn’t enthuse those attempting to create a half-decent round. However, more than half-decent rounds were put together by some. Miracles happen!! Keven Mitchell in Gold and Paddy Diskin in Silver both recorded 37 points, the latter taking the day’s best return on count back.

Sixteen members beat 30 points. The day’s winning results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 4th Bob Eyland (31 on CB), 3rd Wenche Westburg (32), 2nd Mike Jordan (33) and 1st Ken Flaherty (35) Silver Category: 4th Chris Wren (32), 3rd Steve Hart (33), 2nd Phil de Lacey (36) and 1st Paddy Diskin (37) Gold Category: 4th Bill Morrison (32), 3rd Roger Webb (33), 2nd Colin Smith (34) and 1st Keven Mitchell (37) Nearest the pins: Hole 7 Norman Cahill, Hole 9 Mick Roscoe , Hole 14 Colin Smith, Hole 18 John Mellor Abacus: Gary Beechey Best Guest: Dave Alderdice (33) Next week we will be at Alenda, the following week at Vistabella. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Captain Tony Smale a call on 628 227 687.

Hola! and welcome to the Las Ramblas Golf Society report. This week we are kindly sponsored by that famous Peckham based, international conglomerate, Trotter’s Independent Traders! Monday saw Bryan (Boycie) Neal together with Marleen (Marleen) Billen take the top spot in a ‘two ball better ball’ with 44 points. Crème de la menthe! Although a good score it still fell 9 points short of our record set by John (Dukey) Conway and Donna Campbell last year. In second place (on countback) were Rodney (Dave) Pulling and Mike (this time next year) Chapman. It was noted that Terry Field (or should that be Tony Angelino) complained about the ‘gween, gween’ greens again. Wednesday was round 3 (of 6) in our Eclectic ‘Joker’ Stableford competition. Scoring 8 points on the 7th hole, ‘Del Boy’ Chapman won the day with 44 points. Ménage a tois! Hot on his toes was Friedel Knebel with 42 followed by Rodney Pulling with 40 points. Three ‘2’s today of which Geoff (Arnie) Biggerstaff got two (another gold chain for Dee then!) It certainly didn’t help Uncle Albert (or should I say Alan Douglas) shaving off his beard as he had a very ‘sacre blue’ round today. Unfortunately there was no sign of Trigger (John) Dobson back at ‘The Nag’s Head’ as he had to leap into his ‘Capri Ghia’ for an airport run. Heinz Lei arrived on Friday and obviously had the wrong sitcom in mind as he was wearing his ‘Don Estelle’ shorts. Playing a ‘Dusty Bin 3-2-1’ our winners, with 80 points, were Arnie Biggerstaff, Paul Brown, Pete Dunn and Olga (Raquel) Douglas. Nick (Micky Pearce) Campbell came close to hitting the group in front on a couple of occasions and had to be spoken to quite sternly by ‘Grandad’ Reg Akehurst whilst Nigel (Slater) Price was ready to throw the book at him. John Shervell took the day off from painting a Chinese takeaway but his team couldn’t manage much better than 5th place. Bain Marie! Por ultimo, in the words of Paul Harvey ‘Golf is a game in which you yell four, shoot six and write down five’ Pues, hasta la semana que viene
