Sloppy roadworks add to driving hazards The latest crusade being undertaken by FAOC (the Federación de Asociaciones de Orihuela Costa) is with regard to the state of the roads in and around Avda Villamartin, the carriageway that connects the coast with Villamartin and San Miguel de Salinas, and which also leads directly to La Zenia Boulevard, which receives in the region of 13 million annual visitors. After an appeal to local residents they have now compiled a dossier of dozens of photo’s, all depicting the appalling state of this popular and well used thoroughfare. The images show the same large potholes, broken pavements and other damages that

have been repaired time after time but continue to reappear because of the inferior way in which the repairs are being carried out. They tend to last for about a month, but when they do reappear it is usually with a

vengeance, with the added hazard of gravel and even larger potholes. Spokesperson Tomas Moreno

says that the work being carried out is only patchwork and is extremely sloppy. Continued on Page 2

There is a widespread feeling that the Orihuela Costa’s roads are in a bad state and it has a poor reputation in comparison with other parts of the area, but simply spending more resources on resurfacing roads rather than filling in potholes can be a better use of money. It is clearly worrying that the Orihuela council are not fixing dangerous hazards.

SAMARITANS IN SPAIN Samaritans is a charity established in the UK by Chad Varah in 1953. Since then it has grown exponentially and more recently, has spread even to countries like Spain. The Samaritans' main function is to listen to anyone who is experiencing distress. Communication is mostly via telephone, free of charge. There is also an opportunity to speak to front line staff at the shop, and in the privacy of the Samaritan’s drop-in centre at Punta Marina commercial centre. Samaritans are also accessible by email. All listeners are trained volunteers who serve in rotas and are available 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. How many hours or how often they offer their services ('listen') is up to the individual volunteer. Samaritans listen to people who are either lonely, or feel themselves unable to express their feelings, concerns, or problems to those around them. They do not 'counsel', but provide an empathetic ear. Volunteer listeners are drawn from all backgrounds, all ages, and all walks of life. After initial training all new listeners are supported with mentoring. It is not only those who face life traumas, bereavement, or those burdened with guilt, who contact Samaritans. Anyone who feels the need for emotional support, encouragement and lacking confidence will benefit by talking to a Samaritan. A call to the Samaritans could last a few minutes or much longer, since callers are never rushed. The need for this type of help in the community is exemplified by the rapid expansion of Samaritans in Spain since its inception in September 2005. Increasingly, Samaritans in Spain not only require more volunteer listeners for its primary function, but also to help in administration, publicity and other varied roles.

With branches in Madrid, Denia and a charity shop and drop-in centre in Punta Marina (Punta Prima), the latter established in 2013, Samaritans in Spain are now a regular feature as a charity in Costa Blanca (North and South). Participants at a meeting on 13th January 2017 at the drop-in centre were unanimous in expressing their own sense of fulfilment and joy in serving as Samaritans. Thank you to the following volunteers. Fionnula Fitzsimons, Elizabeth Rushton, Pamela Russell, Helena Smith, Jane Troubridge Postscript Come and meet us at the Recruitment Day, Wednesday 22nd from 10.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m. at the Samaritans Centre, Punta Marina Commercial Centre. PIPN call for resignation of San Fulgencio Mayor Mayor Carlos Ramirez will appear in court next April accused of turning a blind eye to a number of unauthorised council payments relating to the local football club

does he have to accuse the Prosecutor in this way? Carlos Ramírez, needs to be be more careful when he talks and measure his words before he accuses someone as important as a Prosecutor. Other recent comments accuse his opponents of jealousy. He says that the opposition didn’t win at the elections but they now want to win in the courts.

The Partido Independiente Por Las Nacionalidedes (PIPN), has called to the Mayor of San Fulgencio, Carlos Ramírez of the PP Partido Popular, for his immediate resignation from all positions that he holds. They have not asked for his resignation until now as a date for the trial had previously not been set. It is unacceptable that the Partido Popular at Provincial level isn’t willing to make a statement or act on this issue, when it has done in other municipalities for much less. In the media Carlos Ramírez states that he has the full support of his Party, even in a radio interview he gave recently, when he was already aware of his trial date. We ask ourselves, when will they hold up their hands and say “enough is enough” and do what they said they would do with all PP politicians indicted in any legal case? He continues to openly state that the Prosecutor “HAS BOUGHT” political arguments from the opposition and that he lies. What basis

He should remember that thanks to the support of the PIPN he was elected Mayor in the last legislature. This cost the Party dearly with the resignation of President and Councillor Jeffrey Wiszniewski who had the honesty and dignity to resign after being accused in another pending court case. The PIPN also asks for the resignation of Susana Ramirez Ortuño (cousin of the Mayor), one of his deputies in the previous legislature and first Deputy Mayor in the current government, for having full knowledge and supporting the Mayor in all his decisions. She has also supported every decision that the Mayor has taken in the Townhall. Our Party does not rule out that she may be involved in some of the issues still pending in the courts. Why would she not have voiced any concerns to her Party (PP)?

Orihuela goes back to the Middle Ages

Despite the windy conditions experienced by some on Sunday organisers say that the Medieval Market in Orihuela attended by thousands of visitors over the weekend proved to be more popular than ever. Saturday was especially busy with visitors arriving from all over the province. Reasonable temperatures contributed to the many historical activities

that were enacted throughout the three day event making it one of the most unique experiences which appears not to be hosted by Orihuela or an annual basis. Visitors were able to visit about 250 stalls spread throughout the historic city centre, immersing one and all in a medieval atmosphere.

Babilonia Residents feel ‘absolutely helpless’ The residents of Playa Babilonia in Guardamar del Segura expressed their disappointment after learning that the Coastal Authority has appealed the judicial order requesting the adoption of urgent precautionary measures to restore the effects of the storm to their properties, with dozens of houses having suffered damage, some to the point of total collapse. The association criticized the fact that the 100 families who live in Playa Babilonia heard of the move through the media and not through official channels. This action refers to the agency's intention not to act in the area until the end of the concession, which expires in mid-2018. They say that the lack of action is “ a delaying process by the Costa’s so that the sea does its work", finishing up by destroying the hundred houses of Playa Babylon instead of them being

required to take measures that will stop the advance of the sea. The residents have now publicly asked for the resignation of the Head of the Coastal Service in Alicante

European Parliament to look again at Cala Mosca The debate will take place in the session scheduled for 28 February.

A

t the request of Marina Albiol, the spokeswoman for the United Left at the European Parliament, the Committee on Petitions will debate the plan to build another 1,500 new homes in Cala Mosca, the very last virgin kilometer of coastline along the Orihuela Costa. The debate will take place in the session scheduled for 28 February. Albiol said "it is very sad that there are still such projects that we thought we had already overcome, and more regrettable that they still occur in an area so punished by

fierce construction, as is the case of the coastline of the Vega Baja. That is why all the efforts we can take to halt this plan will be extremely important. " The project that was paralysed in 2012 has been reactivated in recent months, which has generated actions by a number of neighborhood associations and political groups, including Cambiemos Orihuela. Among the initiatives, the Committee on Petitions has been asked to reopen the file on the possibility of irregularities. According to reports, there are said to be serious shortcomings in Environmental Impact Studies (EIS)

relating to the micro reserve allotted by the builder to the protected species of flora and fauna. "We do not understand how the Generalitat does not act with all its power to stop a clear urban aggression against the last virgin area of the southern coast of the Valencian Community, thus resuming a trend that we should overcome if we do not want to fall into the mistakes that brought us to ruin some years ago. We are sure that the Committee on Petitions will show sympathy to the groups who want to save Cala Mosca from an urban catastrophe ".

Councillor demands an explanation for school holdup The Councillor of Education Department and urbanism, BegoĂąa Cuartero, denounced on Friday the stoppage of the building works at the CEIP Orihuela Costa Junior School. She said that construction had not been restarted following the Christmas break despite the regular progress meetings. The new brick facility is being built to replace the portable cabin accommodation that children have been using in the area for over 14 years. The Councillor for education spoke to the regional administration who are funding the project urging them to explain to parents why there are delays. She has asked the Territorial Director of education, Tudi Torro, for an urgent meeting with the builder. She wants the meeting to take place on site so that a full explanation can be given. However, the Territorial Director, through the Chief Architect, has since confirmed to the councillor that there are problems, although he failed to expand on them at the time.

Residents slam inconsiderate builder The Association "San Miguel Arcángel" has asked the council to instruct the builder at the new residential site "Mirador de San Miguel" to be more considerate to local residents. Currently the Constructor is dumping building waste, earth and rubble just about anywhere he wishes, creating a great deal of concern to the current occupants. They say that the builder is showing no concern as he dumps the waste adjacent to occupied properties and that their representations to the council seem to be falling on deaf ears.

STEP 1: OBTAINING A CERTIFICATE OF CONFORMITY This is a statement by the car’s manufacturer that it conforms to EU regulations. You will need the car’s chassis number to complete this straightforward process online at www.eurococ.eu/en/certificate_of_conformity. The charges for this service will vary according to type of vehicle, make and country of 1st registration.

The Neighbourhood Association requires that the municipal council complies immediately with their request and starts to defend the interest of the residents. They say that the disdain, abuse and abandonment in which the residents of our housing estates are forced to live is not the best way of promoting the municipality which has tourism as one of it’s main economic engines.

STEP 2: CURRENT LOG BOOK The vehicle’s original log book showing your name as the owner, the vehicles age and a valid UK address. You will also need the bill of sale for the car. STEP 3: RESIDENCY IN SPAIN The Spanish residency certificate (Certificado de Empadronamiento) is your official proof of residency in Spain. Your local town hall can provide you with this document. You will need to take your passport and proof of Spanish address (rental contract, contract to purchase or property deeds). STEP 4: OBTAINING A SPANISH MOT CERTIFICATE All vehicles over 4 years old must be roadworthy and clearly display a valid ITV sticker. The ITV (Vehicle Technical Inspection) must be tested at an authorised centre, just as for an MOT test. You can find out the location of your nearest ITV centre on DGT website (equivalent to the DVLA). You can also call your local centre to make a booking. If the centre is busy, especially pre-summer, this can save a lot of time. The cost can vary but generally is around

40€ for petrol-engine cars and 56€ for diesel-engine cars. Step 5: OBTAINING THE SPANISH EQUIVALENT OF A TAX DISC The Spanish Tax Agency can provide your vehicle with a valid “tax disc” for Spain, which must be carried in the car when in use. You will need to complete the relevant form online and pay the amount according to your car’s tax band. You can carry out all these procedures yourself or you can seek the assistance of an accountant to do this for you. We hope the information provided in this article is of interest. ork is now underway on repairs and improvements to the PASEO DE LA MATA which was destroyed by the heavy rains in December. According to the Councillor for beaches, Javier Manzanares, the works will be completed before the summer.

T

The flames threatened to spread to the large gardening marquee directly outside, with the peril associated to toxic fumes, caused as a result of burning plastic and resins.

The fire occurred just before 1pm to the large electrical signboard that adorns the store entrance, while hundreds of people were shopping inside.

Fortunately the fire brigade were quickly on hand and were able to extinguish, what was thought to be an electrical fire. The bomberas were supported by the Policia Local who confirmed that the flames were doused prior to any need to evacuate the building.

he rapid intervention of firefighters at Carrefour in Torrevieja last week prevented a blaze from spreading beyond the entrance area and into the store itself with the very satisfactory result that many shoppers inside the town’s largest retailer were not even aware that there was a problem.

In outlining the project the councillor said that he was delighted with the speed at which the work was progressing. He said that the new walkway would be a great enhancement to the La Mata seafront.

‘Sell Out’ tribute to ‘MUSIC IN A Gorden Kaye QUIET PLACE’ On Sunday 29 January, Campoverde Church was blessed with a concert of MUSIC IN A QUIET PLACE, arranged by Christine Eames, singing by Chorale Choir and trombone solo by Andrew Briant. The church was packed with music lovers who were treated to a wonderful selection of singing and music, with a short period of Quiet in the mid-

“The Deadwood Stage Company’s” production of “Allo, Allo Tries Panto” was a fitting tribute to the beloved, late Gorden Kaye. A sell out show was performed at “The Madhouse” for 2 evenings. The costumes were most colourful and the cast of 15 portrayed the much loved characters and brought a laugh and invoked many happy memories of the original TV show. The audience enjoyed a tasty snack in the interval and 12 items were raffled each night, to the delight of the winners. A lady in the audience was celebrating her birthday (no age disclosed! On the Saturday evening) and a kind friend and member of the cast, arranged for her to be presented with a bouquet. Also a small birthday cake had been made by the member in charge of catering each night. So, for the ‘birthday girl’ it was certainly a night to remember.

On the final night, a donation of 600€ was presented to the parents of the late, delightful Katie Salmon. In memory of their daughter a fund had been started, entitled “The Katie Salmon Performing Arts Scholarship”. This allows children in the area, up to the age of 16, to attend discounted classes to study music and drama at “The Matrix Studio” held at “The Madhouse”. So, the members of “The newly formed “Deadwood Stage Company” can now rest on their laurels after their first major production. They would welcome any new members, in any capacity to join them, that is to say budding actors, or helpers back stage and front of house. Rehearsals are held as from 15th February each Wednesday morning at 11.00a.m. at Georgiou’s Greek Restaurant near Blue Lagoon. Any further information can be had by ringing Vida on 966 77 4127.

TOUR DE VALENCIA GETS GOING FROM THE COSTA

Orihuela Costa was the venue chosen for the start of the 1st stage of the Tour de Valencia last Wednesday when the mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, cut the tape that got the team time trial underway. The mayor said that the choice of Orihuela Costa for the first stage "is a great opportunity to firmly establish Orihuela on the sport map with this great event that provides top level cycling from start to

finish." The mayor was joined at the ceremony by the councillor for Sports, Tourism and Pedanías, Dámaso Aparicio, Sofía Álvarez and Víctor Valverde as well as the organiser Angel Casado, and the provincial deputy of Sports, Pascual Diaz.

New fencing for San Fulgencio Sports Centre The new fencing around the municipal sports facility was completed last week at a cost of 120,000 euro. As well as a new perimeter fence the project also separated the different sports activities and fitted a new floor of the futsal court. Given the deterioration of the fencing caused by a lack of maintenance over more than 20 years the present council obtained a subsidy from the Provincial Diputación. As such the fence was erected at no cost to San Fulgencio taxpayers.

Valentine’s Day Romance broken by Formby Heart attack V

whom she had known as a schoolgirl, she too died a little over a decade after Formby's passing, in November 1971, from ovarian cancer.

ALENTINE'S Day 56 years ago - February 14 1961 - Britain's biggest entertainment star ukulele legend George Formby and religious education teacher Pat Howson got engaged on her 36th birthday.

On Valentine's Day - approaching six decades ago George and Pat announced their engagement in style, when arriving at The Moorcock Inn, Waddington, in a Rolls Royce.

After the happy couple celebrated their announcement in Waddington, near Clitheroe, in the Ribble Valley, Lancashire, they returned to Pat's home in Penwortham, Preston, where they relaxed in peace and quiet - away from the world media frenzy that film, comedy and singing idol Formby had attracted for decades.

Pat showed off her huge solitaire engagement diamond ring. On her lapel she wore a gold ukulele brooch - a symbol of Formby's stardom, famed for songs including When I'm Cleaning Windows, My Little Stick of Blackpool Rock, and Leaning On A Lampost.

A wedding was planned at St Francis Hill Chapel, Goosnargh, Lancashire, a picturesque country setting on the outskirts of Preston, founded in 1755.

It's a childhood Valentine's Day love story, that turned to tragedy for Pat, the only daughter of parents Fred, who became estranged from the family, and Kathleen Howson.

But love turned to tragedy when Formby suffered a heart attack - just six days after their engagement while dining with Pat in Penwortham.

Father Middlehurst, Rector of St Wilfrid's Church, Preston, where Pat Howson's funeral took place, prior to burial at Preston Cemetery, said: "Miss Howson didn't have such a happy life.

And on March 6, 1961, Formby died after suffering another heart attack while in St Joseph's Hospital, Mount Street, Preston, aged 56. "I'll never find anyone like George. Everyone loved him. He was the most wonderful man I've ever met I'm not sure what I'm going to do with my life," said heartbroken Pat. After Pat Howson's dream engagement to Formby,

"She had a broken home, and romance which was broken by death, within a few weeks of the wedding." George Formby and Pat Howson on their engagement, Valentine's Day February 14, 1961.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

Carnival Time Again Christmas, New Year and Three Kings Day are all over at last, as is Blue Monday (16 January), which is the most depressing day of the year, according to a happy band of media reporters. It is now time to shake away those winter blues, search out a fabulous costume and get ready for Carnival – Canaries style! Carnival has been celebrated across the Canary Islands since 1556 just before the Christian period called Lent, forty days before Easter, and often around Shrove Tuesday or Mardi Gras. Lent previously meant that Christians gave up eating meat, so just before this fortyday period the Canary Islanders were determined to take the term ‘party’ or fiesta to a higher level, which normally involves locals dressing up in fabulous costumes, when often men become women and women become men, just for the fun of it, and of course to have your photo taken. The dates of Easter change each year and so the date of Carnival across the Canary Islands also changes, so that although the capital cities of each of the Canary Islands have the biggest parades and open air entertainment, many smaller towns also hold their own Carnival parades. These parades have large floats that carry many in amazing costumes who often throw sweets or even offer those watching small cups of Canarian rum. Before the big parades there are also competitions for the best Carnival Queen (ladies), Carnival Dame (older ladies), Carnival Junior Queen (young girls) and of course the best Drag Queen (guess)! There are also singing competitions called Murgas, when local people on each island sing songs that can often be very rude to those living on other islands. Carnival

starts when a large sardine appears, and it ends when the sardine is taken out to sea, where it dies, and many spectators will be seen crying! It is an emotional and passionate event, often reflecting the partying frolics of the previous night! Expat residents and tourists that visit during this Carnival period should make sure that they join in the party and learn more about local customs and traditions. There are many shops near tourist areas that sell good value Carnival costumes, so there is no reason why foreigners cannot join in the Canary Islanders’ celebrations. Most municipalities have colourful posters that advertise the local events of Carnival, but some places tend to think that Carnival only involves local people, and they will already know when and where to go. The information shown on The Canary Islander website give dates and times for Carnival events in all the Canary Islands, but it is a good idea to check with local Tourist Information Offices too. Take plenty of photos and selfies, because the rich cultural mix of Canary Islanders have strong connections with South America, Cuba and other Caribbean islands, which means that when Carnival comes to the Canary Islands it challenges the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, and some think it is even better! One word of warning for those visiting Santa Cruz in La Palma for Carnival! The locals also celebrate White Monday (the day before Shrove Tuesday), when locals only wear white clothes, and then after a certain signal, throw white talcum powder over everyone. Los Indianos celebrates Canary Islanders who were previously transported to Spanish colonies, and returned when they had become successful. So there is a point to White Monday, but the talcum powder goes

everywhere, and those with breathing problems should watch from a distance, as the powder storm spreads quickly and is not the healthiest substance to breathe in. Las Palmas in Gran Canaria also celebrates White Monday in the old streets of Triana and Vegueta, with special permission of the islanders of La Palma. Carnivals in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife are often billed as “Second Only to Rio”, so if you really would like to take part in a huge, crazy, frivolous spectacle of colour and vitality, make sure you don’t miss it! You can find out more information and the dates of the largest events on the islands on The Canary Islander website: www.thecanaryislander.com/carnival.html If you enjoyed this article, take a look at Barrie’s websites: http://barriemahoney.com and http://thecanaryislander.com or read his latest book, ‘Footsteps in the Sand’ (ISBN: 9780995602717). Last rearranged match and what a game it was with Sharks at home playing Quesada Swallows second in the league. Three rinks each and it went all the way down to shots. The Sharks pulled it off by one. Alan Castle, Phil Pape and Janet Parsons; Dave Hadaway, Tom Spencer and Maureen Kidd and Jim Manning, Margaret Finlayson and Margaret McLaughlin were our winning rinks. So far, so good this week with the Pathfinders playing at home defeated Greenlands Sycamores 13-1. Five winning rinks all scoring more than twenty. Colin Armitage, John Mallet and Lynne Armitage; Terry Perchard, Peter Bailey and Angie Butler; David Taylor, Dave McGaw and Lorita Rae; John Withers, Martin Butler and Paul Tregoing; John Rae, Mick Fitzgerald and Jean Tregoing. John Morgan, Bernie Carr and Mo Taylor drew on their rink. Great result. And so it goes on. Yippee. Explorers took on San Miguel Pulsars at home and won 11- 3. Another good result. Tom Spencer, Margaret Finlayson and Barbara Forshaw; Dave Hadaway, Jim Reeves and Ann Stone; Mike Stone , Jim Manning and Janet Parsons and Peter Parsons, Phil Pape and Rob Finlayson were the winning rinks while Alex Whyte, Mike Surch and Kathy Manning managed a draw. It continues, not with a win but a draw mainly thanks to our beloved Captain, Dave Hadaway and his girls, Jean Perchard, Barbara Forshaw and Janet Parsons with a 28-6 score which to all intent and purpose gave us the overall shots. Shirley had to keep up with Dave and with help of Steve Douglas, Ray Gardener and Ann Stone they also won. Fairly pleased as we were playing away at Greenlands. The three losing rinks only dropped ten shots. This is good. Another game without loss, a draw for the Seagulls against Emerald Isle Claymores was fine. Three wins and a draw did it for us. Len Daniels, Steve Hindle and Steve Douglas won; Sue Daniels, Mike Stone and Mo Taylor had a close win and Dave Taylor followed with Gina Hindle and Lynne Armitage. The Lathams and Barbara Forshaw were the ones that drew. Getting scary now, another win and a really good one by the Dolphins beating El Rancho Mustangs 12-2. Tops were John Rae, Dave McGaw and Roger Stacey. All the other winners were fairly close. Martin Butler, Garth Slater and Allan Wilcock; Bill Jones, George Furzer and Jack Chorlton; Don Harrison, Reg Jackson and Lorita Rae; John Withers, Jeff Halfhide and Shirley Withers. Shame it had to come to an end but the Sharks at Mazarron lost 9-5.The Hadaways did well. Shirley, Dave O’Sullivan and Hilary Cronk won while Dave won with Tom Spencer and Maureen Kidd. Alan Castle, Phil “Birthday Boy” Pape and Janet Parsons drew.

Carp R Us The match on 2nd February was fished on the Eden stretch, low numbers. It was nice to have 14 members fishing and the recent bank clearing and repair work carried out by members of the club meant that all but one of the pegs were fishable again, well done everyone who turned up to help. The water levels were up and, for the first time in a long time, there was a gentle flow on the water. However, this did not improve the fishing, which has been tough on this stretch for some time. Ian Air finished first with 2.16kg using feeder and corn, second was Mark Foden (1.94kg) using feeder and corn, third Steve Fell (1.74kg) using feeder and maggot and fourth was Jeremy Fardoe with 1.16kg. Further information about the club can be found on its website www.carp-r-us.weebly.com or on our Facebook page Carp-R-Us Fishing Costa Blanca. The club is currently looking for new members and anyone interested can contact us through the Facebook page, the website or calling the club secretary, Steve Fell, on 634 379 081.

Monday found The Pintos entertaining San Luis Romulans; on a day so fine it made you feel just a little smug. The mat being completely dry, the first time in a while and a tricky little breeze made it more difficult for the visitors to find line and length. They were however great company and we enjoyed the morning. The Pintos took full advantage of the home mat, as all teams do, to take all the available points. The Broncos meanwhile had a tougher fixture, playing at Quesada against The Diamonds, which is always a difficult opponent particularly at Quesada. But they put up a bit of a fight and came away with one ring and lost another by just the one shot, not a bad effort all round. On Wednesday The Raiders played their re-arranged home match against Emerald Isle Outlaws and played well, against a tough team, to take 4 rinks and draw another for a good result. Particularly as the other rink only lost by 2 shots, just the luck of the draw. Friday found The Mustangs playing at La Marina against The Seagulls, always one of my favourite venues and opponents. Although we put up a fair battle and some rinks were close, we came away with just the one rink, but we did have good fun in good company. Jim Taylor, Irene Thomson and Eddie Thomson 14-18. Ann Taylor, Malc Sykes and Jim Gracie 18-14. Maxine Wright, John Skipper and Rod Wright 11-33. Henry Ryder, Jan Bright and Richard Lee 12-13. June Whitworth, Jane Hamill and Stew Hamill 14-19.Bob Morgan, Merv Armstrong and David Whitworth 16-22. La Siesta Bowls Club By Rod Edgerton Sunday commenced with the Blues re-arranged match away at Quesada Swifts. The result was a narrow win for the Swifts by 110 shots to 99 so obtaining 8 points to the visitors 6. For the Blues biggest winning rink was Irene Laverick, Pat Harman and Brian Gardiner 28-11 whilst the other winning rinks were Beryl Styring, Ramsey Sinclair and Alex Morrice 21-15 and Sheila Chorley, Harold Charleton and Irene Mangan 18-17. Monday saw the Clash of The Titans with the Apollos at home to Emerald Isle. Unfortunately it was the Isle that came away with a win by 114-99 and got the points by 10-4 leaving them narrowly in position 1 in the league. Dawn and John Taylor with skip Harold Charleton provided a superb 24-11 win whilst the other winners were Irene Laverick, Ramsay Sinclair and Brian Gardiner 17-15. On Tuesday the Hoopoes had a close match with the Emerald isle Shamrocks with match ending 45 shots to 48 enabling the Shamrocks to get a points win by 62.For the Hoopoes the winning rink was Ann and Robert Heath with Rod Edgerton and skip John Ball by 18 shots to 13. Wedneday’s Winter League fixture saw us away at Montemar in an exciting close match with the honours finishing even points being shared 6-6, the shots finishing 87-89. The final bowl of the match delivered by Montemar skip Brian Zelin cut down the 5 shots held by La Siesta to ensure the overall total shots going to Montemar. The winning rinks for La Siesta were Sheila Chorley, Brian Gardiner with Val and Tony Dalton 19-16, Ann Edgerton, Molly Russell, Pat Reilly and Mike Edwards 19-16 and Irene Laverick, Tony Campbell, Pat Harman and Jean Cooper 21-19. The Blues entertained La Manga Crusaders and reversed the whitewash that they received when they visited La Manga.A 14-0 win with an overall points score for La Siesta by 220 shots to 43. With all rinks winning the biggest wins were for Ann and Robert Heath with John Ball by 47-4 and by Beryl Styring, Ramsey Sinclair and Alex Morrice 38-9. The other winning rinks were Irene Laverick, Vic Mahomet and Brian Gardiner, Dave Davies with Florence and Mike Edwards and Sue Mahomet, Trish Reilly and Sue Jordan and finally Barbara and Jack Cooper with Irene Mangan. The Golds travelled to San Luis to play the Pumas and did not have such good fortune losing 10-4 and by 143 shots to 78. The winning rinks were Ron Sheldon, Val Dalton and Sid Gallup 1914 and Ken Stringfellow, Ann Edgerton and Tony Campell, winning on the final end, 22-21

SMGS at Las Ramblas

SMGS’s first visit to Las Ramblas for some time found 38 members and 2 guests taking part in a stableford competition on a course that members seem to either love or hate. Extremely difficult pin positions (looking with notable angst at you hole 2) and teeing off from some whites, as well as the usual Las Ramblas timber encounters, led to some very average scoring, something of a trait over recent SMGS meets. Only 6 members beat 29 points, with the stand-out score of the day going to John Aitchison (40) One match was held in SMGS’s 2017 doubles match play competition, Mike Jordan and Mike Inns beating Phil de Lacy and Keith Stevenson 4 & 3. The day’s stableford results were the following: Bronze Category: 5th Kyree Skarsmoen (24 on CB), 4th Chris Hamblett (24 on CB), 3rd Brian Butler (28), 2nd Norman Padmore (34), and 1st amazing octogenarian Norman McBride with 35 points. Silver Category: 5th Mike Jordan (29 on CB), 4th Karen Simpson (29 on CB), 3rd Russell Bailey (35), 2nd Ken Flaherty (36) and 1st, with the best score of the day, John Aitchison with a terrific 40 points. Gold Category: 5th Bjorn Pettersson (27), 4th John Osborne (28 on CB), 3rd Tony Smale (28 on CB), 2nd Steve Higgins (29), and 1st Barry Roehrig with 35 points The Abacus was won Paul Cobain. Nearest the pins on the par 3’s (open to all) went to Alan Williams (6), Ken Flaherty (10 and 14 with two superb shots) and Karen Simpson (12). The best front 9 and not in the prizes was won by Alan MacDonald (18, and welcome back after your long injury lay-off!!) and, highlighting the difference for many in difficulty between the front and back halves, the best back 9 by Glen Rapley with 15. Best guest prize was won by Keven Mitchel with a sound 31 points. Our thanks go to the staff at Las Ramblas golf course. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Theo Boelhouwer a call on 694494824 to find out more about the society and its weekly golf get-togethers. Next Wednesday we will be at El Valle.

SUDUKO SOLUTION

Monday 6th - Sunday 12th February, 2017

Campoamor welcomesTMGS Some 48 players turned up to play or 3rd round of our Eclectic completion which is played over 4 rounds the final round being played on the 1/3/17. Back to the 48 players, it was actually 44 members and 4 guests however the gust enjoyed the day so much that they became members before heading for home. Yet again the course can be seen to be improving on every visit, this month it was the greens that seemed to have gained speed somewhat and could be compared to La Manga’s greens last week maybe this was reason for no one making a “2” on any of the 5 par 3’s. So the €37 in the pot will be carried over to our competition at La Marquesa next week. Although there were a good number of our Viking members in the field they failed to make an impression on the podium, I can only imagine that they are saving their handicaps for the next match for the Viking Trophy which should be played during the next 2 months. Results: N.T.P.’s hole 4 Chris Oatley, hole 6 Derek Sullivan aka “Peter the pet lover” hole 10 John Reilly. Holes 15 and 17 were void, we always categorise our N.T.P.’s to give everyone a chance to win a prize but it does need the help of the players, that is to say that they need to look at the pin before they put their name on it to be sure that it is for their category. Bronze category results: 3rd O. Haubner 33 pts. 2nd R. Rea 36 pts. 1st B. Striver 336 pts. on L/H Silver category: 3rd A. Rickers 32 pts. 2nd J. Hillier 35 pts. 1st J. Davidson 35 pts. on L/H Gold category: 3rd C. Oatley 35 pts. 2nd L. Hagstrom 35 pts. L/H 1st Captain John Eyre 37 pts.Phooto: Silver category winners. We are a multinational Society and welcome everyone to participate in our competitions. For further information please visit ww.tmgs.org

Orange Tree Golf Society The cold weather snap was still with for the latest society event when we turned up at El Valle. It was dry and some warmth was gained in the sunshine but with the cold biting wind plenty of clothes had to be worn. This lead to some lower scores tan usual, but credit has to be given to all members for turning up on such a cold day to support this society. This being said we did have some abstentees due to the flight delays from the UK, the captain being one of these. Thus the vice captain, Stuart Robertson, should in charge and organised the tropos. we played a pairs betterball competition, the results being as follows. 1st - Trevor Rollason and John Downie with 32 points, 2nd - Les Gale and Sammy Tunbiety with 32 points and 3rd - John Burgess and Stuart Robertson with 31 points. NTP´s went to Andy Shuttle (12th) and John Burgess (15th). This presentation was made back at Bar Liquid, Cabo Roig, were the society must thank Leo and his staff for all his help hosting The Orange Tree Golf Society whilst the restaurant was closed for staff holidays. EL PLANTIO 2 GOLF SOCIETY By David Swann Tuesday, 30th January saw a reduced turnout of 14 members taking party in the club 'Monthly Medal'. The result broke a sequence for club member Ian Craig, fresh from his clean sweep the previous week, as he could only finish in second place. Congratulations Christine, who is a winter visitor, mainly at El Plantio to play the 18 hole course. Nearest the pins : Hole 2 Christine Linathan, Hole 6, Ian Craig. 3rd Place - Handicap 10, Keith Smith Net 56 Shots . 2nd Place - Handicap 4, Ian Craig Net 53 Shots. 1st Place - Handicap 12, Christine Linathan Net 51 Shots. MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF (Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. ‘THE SECRET OF GOLF’ I would bet that every single golfer that has played this glorious game of golf has been looking for the ‘secret’ to good golf. Well for the first time in your life someone is going to give you this information for free. Are you ready for it? The secret is that “there are no difficult shots in golf” Rubbish I can hear you all scream so let me explain these comments. If you played the game of golf on a course where every hole was the same length, no wind changes, no bunkers, no rough, no trees and perfectly flat greens you would not play golf and why? The answer is simple because it would not be ‘ interesting’ enough. So remember what I said previous, from a mental perspective, there are no difficult shots in golf, some are ‘more interesting’ than others. The next time you are faced with that deft chip from a tight lie to a pin tucked behind a bunker remember these words. Instead of convincing yourself how difficult the shots is and how you can not possibly play the shot think to yourself ‘this is an interesting shot’ While in itself it will not prevent you hitting a poor shot, because your technique could be flawed, it will take stress from your mind and body and will prevent you hitting a poor shot because of the way you were thinking. In the same way when next faced with a tricky 3-foot putt to win, instead of saying to yourself “I have got to get this” replace this thought with “I am going to get this”. Again you will find with a good technique that you hole more of these putts with less stress on mind and body. So there you have it, the secret of golf, now all you have to do is put it into practise. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. General Information - Gogartys have closed the bar and “The Gals” are now playing from The Gap Bar. Similarly, D’Paula has been closed too, and The Wildcats are now playing from Macklin’s Bar, in Via Park III. I have maps; and if anyone needs them please let me know. In the meantime, the Wildcats are recruiting in preparation for next season because Sam is pregnant and the baby is due just before the next Season starts. Our Congratulations go to Sam and Alan. Any players out there interested in playing for the Wildcats please let me know. Thank you. Apologies to Mitch Halliday, whose name is incorrect on her card, a new card will be issued in due course, but Captains please note the name is Halliday and not Halliwell as printed on the membership card. We now move onto our Ladies League regular format, and look forward to having some more very good darts. This is an ideal time to remind everyone, unlike the Founders Format, if you do not turn up with enough players you forfeit that game/pair respectively. With the start of the League Format, please remember to get your Results in on time. Thank you. Pam Horton, 96 571 0066. Emails: Dartess501@gmail.com
