But through the efforts of their members that is exactly what the Orihuela Costa Branch of the Royal British Legion has achieved since they were first established in January 2008. The branch was formed when

a small number of members moved across from an existing section being supplemented by recruits from newly approved areas. Almost sixty members and potential members attended that inaugural meeting in the Olympia Restaurant, Mil Palmeras, at which the very first Branch Committee was elected. Continued on Page 2

As the membership has more than doubled in it’s five years so has the annual amount raised by the branch, from just over 13,000 euro in it’s first year, 2008, to almost 29,000 euro in 2012. And the money has been raised through a variety of functions and events, not just appeals in local restaurants and bars but from the popular RBL golf days, sponsored fitness programmes, the distribution of poppies at markets, shopping centres, offices, major stores and airports as well as at a multitude of variety shows, dinners and local dances. Of course charity legislation now requires that poppies are not sold but ‘distributed in return for donations'. Those who do contribute should be aware that the major

have fallen on hard times and here on the Orihuela Costa, in recent months, the extremely active Welfare Committee have spent over 13,000 euro on vital medical equipment, including hearing aids, wheelchairs, glasses, mobility scooters, apparatus and utility bills for the home and even weekly shopping provisions. Each Branch in the RBL has a Welfare team which is in place to help. They are part of the Legion's extensive Poppy Support services and as such, if you are serving, have served or are the dependant or carer of someone who has served in the UK's Armed Forces, then you may be eligible for their assistance. Orihuela Costa Chairman Keith Carter praised all those unsung volunteers who give so freely of their time to go out throughout the year in order that The Royal British Legion in Spain can help it’s beneficiaries having raised the magnificent sum of €100,548.57 Although branches raise funds all year round the launch of the 2013 Poppy Appeal will take place in Benidorm on 16th October when there will be a parade through the town with members of the Royal British Legion, Benidorm Council dignitaries and the British Consul in attendance.

LEADER TWELVE MILLION EURO BID FOR UNIFORMS ADVERTISING HOTLINE

The Guardia Civil has put the provision of uniform contract out to tender, with a view to replacing various everyday items of uniform clothing, with a value of almost 12 million euro, including tax. The tender process has been launched by the head of economic affairs and is open for bids until the 21st of June. The contract is divided into three lots, the first has an estimated value of more than 4.8 million

euro and is for for short and long sleeved shirts, as well as jumpers, complete with patches of course. The second lot consists of jackets and trousers, some with a removable thermal lining, and caps, and is worth 6.8 million euro. The third batch is for polyvalent shoes and boots and is valued at 263,780 euro.

The Orihuela Councillor for Education, Rosa Martínez, has been giving a guided tour to the regional socialist deputy of education, Miguel Soler, in order to show him the state of the unfinished schools on the Orihuela Costa, so as to gather support from the regional opposition group to put pressure on the education authority to complete the building of the facilities, as the tenth anniversary is being recognised of pupils of the coast being educated in “temporary” portacabin schools. Martínez explained that despite multiple communications and faxes sent persistently to various agencies of the Department of Education in Valencia to find a solution to this situation, the Orihuela local council has not

received any reply or acknowledgement, and the regional group has cancelled two scheduled appointments with the municipal Mayor, Monserrate Guillén, in the last two months alone. The councillor said that “there are students who have completed their entire compulsory education in barracks”, which she describes as an “educational indignity”, whilst also pointing out that the municipal council are unaware of the reasons why the work on the new secondary school, which started again in September, has since stopped. In a direct response to his visit, Miguel Soler has announced that the Parliament Socialist Group will present a non-legislative proposal, urgently demanding that “the Department resolved the situation by implementing a clear deadline and firm schedule” for the completion of these educational facilities because it is “incomprehensible to accept that a school has been in barracks for 10 years”, which has already educated “an entire generation without having gone to a worthy school facility”. Meanwhile, Rosa Martínez announced the cuts to education being forced upon the area by the authorities in Valencia for the next academic year, with 13 teaching posts being slashed, this on top of the 23 already lost last year, meaning a total of 36 teachers have been axed in two years,

as well as another 6 classes being dropped, again on top of the 13 that were eliminated last year, totalling 19 groups from two academic courses being amalgamated. Of the six classes being removed, Villar Palasí and Manjón will lose one each, as well as two in the Virgen de Desamparados, one in Nuestra Señora de Belén and another in Los Dolses. Martínez stated that the local education board have been arguing against these cuts, but this has been unsuccessful, given the “geographical mobility of students this year that can be derived from the creation of the single district school in the township”. Rosa Martínez has also stated that she feels that these cuts will result in a “significant reduction in the quality of teaching in primary education, a fundamental stage in which school is the future of students” , and has warned of the economic difficulties being experienced by the company contracted to provide the school buses, as well as those

operating school canteens, who are “in serious trouble for debts accumulated with the regional administration”. In one school in Orihuela alone, the debt to a company serving food there stands at 130,000 euro, according to the councillor.

Fire fighters discovered the lifeless body of a man in his 60s, who was said to have been suffering from Diogenes syndrome, also known as senile squalor syndrome, a disorder characterized by extreme self-neglect, domestic squalor, social withdrawal, apathy, compulsive hoarding of garbage and lack of shame, after they were called to tackle a blaze at a home at calle Suiza on the Las

Maravillas urbanization of La Mata on Saturday. Early indications show that the man is likely to have died as a result of smoke inhalation, after fire fighters struggled for around three hours to control the blaze, and used a ladder to enter the premises which had become shrouded in thick smoke. Forensic Investigators sfrom the Guardia Civil said that there was a considerable accumulation of “garbage objects” in the property, believed to have been collected over a number of years, which hampered their actions in trying to extinguish the blaze.

For their final performances, the Gilbert and Sullivan Society were resolved that the occasion should not be a Wake. Posing as The Rederring Women’s Institute, they threw themselves with great enthusiasm, fun and no little talent, into careering around Europe performing music ranging from Offenbach, Chopin, Bizet and Lehar to Lionel Bart, Elvis Presley and Max Bygraves with a song from a TV Ice Cream commercial and of course, some G and S pieces for good measure. The packed audiences at Casa Ventura last Saturday and Sunday, including many members from other local theatre groups, needed little encouragement to join in with the well-

known songs and raised the roof of the building during RULE BRITTANIA. performed in " Last Night Of The Proms " style. At the conclusion, cheques for 1500 Euros each were presented to AECC and Help At Home charities, 500 Euros having earlier been donated to the Alzheimers Society. Stage production was by Mava Bingham, vastly experienced in handling this rumbustious group, with musical direction by Judy Phillips and choreography by Gwyneth Farrer. The society was also grateful to John Wallace for his excellent script written in the true tradition of Gilbertian nonsense and ironic political and cultural references. The group members will continue to meet on a social basis under

the aegis of GASP (Gilbert and Sullivan Preservation Society) and who knows, may return at some time in the future, to delight audiences as they have done for the past 18 years. Meantime they express their grateful thanks to all who have loyally supported them over this time.

LOCAL NEWS - TORREVIEJA AND DISTRICT of land donated by the city of Torrevieja of nearly 5,000 square meters. Following the agreement mentioned, the two government groups will create joint working committees for the study and evaluation of any cases that arise. These subsidized homes have two bedrooms in an average area of ??70 square meters, incorporating a number of architectural solutions and improvements in sustainability, such as private solar panels on the roof to power the house. Following the opening of a road through the fishing port of Torrevieja, an agreement was signed this week between the Mayor of the city, Eduardo Dolón, and the region of Valencia, for the local police to assume the responsibility for safety, security and traffic movements through the harbour area. The transfer of powers is seen as a positive move which will allow the local police to act against an increasing amount of vandalism in the area, in particular to boats and buildings in the vicinity.

Whilst visiting Torrevieja this week, the regional Councillor for Infrastructure, Isabel Bonig, explained that the work on the new market and recreation site near the Aquopolis water park, which was set to host the fair ground and Friday market, amongst other things, has “not been paralysed”, but that the 5,328,885 million euro project had been temporarily halted as the city Mayor, Eduardo Dolón, has requested an amendment to the plan in which a dedicated cycle route was created from the city centre to the new site, a fact clearly forgotten by Dolón when asked numerous times about the lack of activity on the site. Bonig stated that the work will recommence soon. The Generalitat has “no date” for the implementation of the Torrevieja desalination plant, according to the minister responsible for water, José Císcar, who made the statement at the general meeting of the Federación de Comunidad de Regantes de la Comunidad Valenciana, the group who consolidate information for those involved in irrigation across the region. Císcar continued to emphasise with the attendees of the conference, saying that “will have to look for” a use for desalinated water for irrigation because, as he explained, “desalinated water has a price that our farmers cannot afford”. Statistics revealed this week show that the month of April closed with 10,646 registered workers unemployed in Torrevieja, 0.6% more than in March, when 10,583 people out of work, according to the Servicio Público de Empleo Estatal, or Sepe. The rise in unemployment has mainly affected the service sector, which saw an increase of 53 people, representing 0.73%, while unemployment in the construction sector rose 0.2%. The early Easter season is thought to have played a part in the service sector figures, as the post season job losses took hold until the next tourist season of summer. The young socialist group of Torrevieja has asked for the city council to provide detailed accounts of the cost of rental and installation of the bull ring for the May Fair, as well as insisting that the event organisers should foot the bill, rather than paying for the structure from municipal funds. They also want clarification as to the reason for the cancellation of the bull fight and horse show, and whether it was poor ticket sales that led to the cancelation. The Councillor for Infrastructure, Planning and the Environment of the Generalitat Valenciana, Isabel Bonig, has announced an important step towards providing access to social housing for families of Torrevieja, with the signing of an agreement between the provincial and local groups. The agreement will allow for an initial 18 homes becoming available for families who meet the required criteria, through a development launched in 2008 by the Instituto Valenciano de la Vivienda (IVVSA), in Sector 9 of Los Hoyos, on calle Los Geranios, on a plot

An Inspector of the Torrevieja local police has opened a disciplinary case against four police officers, after the councillor for security provided a CCTV still picture of their patrol vehicle parked on the pavement at La Mata whilst the officers were carrying out surveillance work at the weekly market. The complaint is said to be an “eye for an eye” matter, after the councillor received a parking ticket for leaving his car in a restricted zone, later to have the signs changed so as to avoid paying for his actions. A union representative of the officers said, “there are thousands and thousands of occasions where the police park their vehicle on a sidewalk, and never until today, has any councillor or police chief, had thought of the idea to initiate proceedings for these events”. There is also a level of irony in that the image shows a vehicle from the G.R.O. squad, who are specifically tasked to deal with illegal trading by the so called “looky looky men” street vendors, and yet, despite the continual praise levied towards the value of the CCV system in Torrevieja, it is never used for taking action against this sort of crime, which would save time, effort and money if it were. The Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, has come out in support of local businesses, by stating that he is objecting to the liberalisation of Sunday opening hours on neighbouring Orihuela, which would allow the Zenia Boulevard and Carrefour stores, as well as all other businesses, to trade on a Sunday.

ROUND AND ABOUT THE VEGA BAJA Police from the Generalitat Valenciana, who have been taking a more active role in law enforcement across the entire region, have identified 85 workshops which are operating illegally, of the 572 inspections carried out, 128 of which were across the Alicante province. Offences range from infringements of employee rights to licensing issues, and 6 people have so far been arrested in the operation that began in November last year.

The town hall of San Isidro are looking at trying to pass a law that bans trucks from driving through the centre of the town, under the socialist lead of Mayor Fernando Morales, due to the large increase of garbage disposal vehicles taking waste from Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa and Pilar de la Horadada to the processing plant at Cox. Although using the AP7 motorway might be the favourable route, the town is in the centre of a popular cut-through that eliminates a corner of the motorway network and is therefore faster. However, the increase in this sort of traffic has upset the residents, as, according to the Mayor, “they always leave the smell of garbage and make noise”. Spokesperson for the Compromís group, Tomás Mestre, has complained to the city of Alicante, stating that he cannot believe “that a city like Alicante, who wants to remain a leader in tourism, keeps most of its tourist information offices closed on Sundays”, thus denying a basic service for visitors. Mestre said that with the exception of the office in La Rambla, none of the information points open on a Sunday, a key day for tourists to visit, and they all close far too early in the evening, especially during the summer months, when Alicante receives the largest influx of tourists. The group says that this is indicative of the neglect that tourism receives, which also translates into the poor picture of the city that has led to a significant drop in cruise ships to the port, as well as a lack of coordination of cultural and historical points of interest.

The town hall of Callosa de Segura has received a grant of 171,059 euro, with which they intend to hire 41 unemployed locals for a 3 month period. The funding is part of an Employment Promotion Programme aimed at “depressed rural areas” and is intended for employing people in roles that can help regenerate the area, cleaning of gullies, landfills, roads, ditches, parks and gardens, and the likes. A trial by jury was launched by the provincial court in Elche on Tuesday, against a Guardia Civil officer who is accused of a crime of bribery, after a Chinese citizen was allegedly asked to pay 200 euro to avoid being arrested. The officer was on duty, in uniform, with a partner when the alleged incident took place in September 2010, in which the accused is said to have used “gestures and voice” to indicate the payment, although the transaction never took place. The prosecutor has asked for a 300 euro fine and a two year ban from public service.

THE ONE WAY TICKET TO PARADISE

our companies are strange and unique creations. Browsing through brochures or skipping through the pages of Internet travel sites is one of those deliciously exciting things to do during those endless cold, wet winter evenings. It is a time when we can dream of sun drenched beaches, sparking white sands and beautiful evenings sitting in a favourite bar enjoying the sunset with our favourite tipple, or indeed our partners. Is it really like this? Well, for many it is. However, I have lived and worked long enough in tourist resorts, mingling and chatting with tour operators and visitors to realise that there is a rather more chilling side to our overseas holidays. It is an area that no one will talk about. For instance, just what does happen if you or your beloved should happen to die abroad? Obviously death on holiday is not one of the features advertised in your glossy holiday brochure, but as inconvenient and thoughtless as it is, it really does happen and with alarming regularity too; indeed, tour companies have departments dealing solely with such issues. The stress of flights, dashing across the runway, over-relaxation (yes, there really is such a thing), too much rich food, too much alcohol, too much sun and, basically too much of everything can lead to strokes, heart attacks and much worse. Indeed, I know of several people on our holiday islands that specialise in getting you back to the UK in one piece, albeit dead or alive, in a box or in an urn. If one is dead, one can usually assume that there will be a rather speedier check in, better quality service, less crowding, no passport control, no screaming kids, but sadly no in-flight meal either. All very reassuring, isn't it? Death really does happen on our holiday island. I heard of one very sad true story recently of a couple that came on holiday to enjoy the sun, which I will share with you. Sadly, the wife passed away during an unfortunate incident at a display of flamenco dancing with an added fire-eating act at a high quality hotel. It was a tragic combination of too many pina colada cocktails and an unfortunate experience with a cocktail cherry that led to the good lady’s early demise. She was pronounced dead as a doormat by the attending physician, and taken away to the local mortuary. It was a shocking end to a wonderful evening and fellow guests wondered how they would get through the remainder of their holidays. However, they found ways to cope with their grief. The poor lady’s husband continued to enjoy his much needed break and as he was ‘all inclusive’ he took advantage of every breakfast, lunch and dinner on offer, as well as all the evening shows, excursions to the local market and free cocktails until it was time for his departure to the UK. He packed his bags and took the courtesy coach to the airport and duly checked in for his flight to Gatwick. It was a few days later when the tour company received an anxious telephone call from the mortuary that was holding the body of his dear, but very dead wife. Sadly, the holidaymaker had returned home without making arrangements for the disposal or return of his wife. So, the tour company really were left ‘holding the body’. Such things happen on holiday, so do please make sure you have a discussion about “What happens if...” before you leave home. Quality insurance cover, together with a decision about burial, cremation or burial at sea is always a good idea and does add a little ‘spice’ to holiday planning. Above all, do have a relaxing and enjoyable holiday!

TEN THOUSAND TRAFFIC FINES PER DAY

In response to a question raised by the parliamentary socialist group in congress, the Directorate General of Traffic, the DGT, issues an average of 10,800 fines for traffic offences, every single day. The information was provided by the deputy of the DGT, Miguel Ángel Heredia, with data collated on a monthly basis between November 2011 and February 2013. That data showed a monthly average of 325,000 fines, equating to about 10,800 each day. As an example of value, given that speeding fines cost motorists between 100 and 600 euro each time, this equates to motorists being between one and six million euro out of pocket per day. However, there seems to be less fines being issued over the whole length of the time monitored, as in February of this year there were only 210,924 fines issued, considerably lower than the monthly average, and nearly half, pro rata, of the 391,445 issued in May of last year. Meanwhile, calls are being made to clamp down on motorists who play “Russian roulette” when it comes to speeding, in particular those who travel at excessive speed which would qualify as an offence against the penal code, rather than just traffic laws. In particular, those motorists who exceed 80 kilometres above the limit on motorways, i.e. at around 200 kilometres per hour, and those who travel at 60 kilometres per hour above the limit on normal roads, for example, those travelling at 110 kilometres per hour on a 50 road. Between 500 and 600 motorists are convicted of these severe offences each year, but the DGT are fully aware that the number of motorists who break the law is far greater than those who are caught. The chief prosecutor of road safety, Bartolomé Vargas, says that speeding of this level is playing “Russian roulette” that can bring “death at any time and drivers should never forget that”. In a recent campaign, we reported that airborne radar Pegasus was able to capture drivers who exceed the speed limit up to five times more effectively than by conventional radar, and has been applauded for raising public awareness that these mechanisms “prevent accidents”. “Radars avoid accidents, because the driver who is caught gets an early wakeup call that, in many cases, conditions their future driving behaviour”, said Vargas. However, the prosecutor also emphasizes that “the vast majority” of drivers are “good” and that we must fight against this minority of “very dangerous” citizens, repeat offenders, or those who “have escaped the radar” or are indifferent to the penalties for the offences.

FOREIGN DRIVERS WILL NOT EVADE FINES Statistics show that one in four motoring offences committed in Europe are by drivers who do not reside in the countries where the offence takes place, and thus goes unpunished by the difficulty in identifying the owner of the vehicle. However, the Spanish traffic authority, the DGT is ready to put a stop to the situation, and has already prepared a draft royal decree amending the General Regulation of Vehicles and to “facilitate the exchange of information among member countries to ensure that fines reach the driver, regardless of the country where the offense was committed”. With the new regulations, the Government will allow EU member states to access vehicle records at the Central Traffic Registry, in order to carry out the necessary investigations to identify drivers of vehicles registered in Spain, who are suspected of committing a traffic violation. By the same virtue, the proposal will allow the Spanish authorities to access the data in other member states, so long as the reason is justifiable under the principles of law. That said though, there will only be eight types of motoring offences covered by the exchange of information legislation, which

are speeding, not wearing a seat belt, skipping a red light, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, not wearing a crash helmet, driving in a prohibited lane such as a bus lane, or using your mobile phone at the wheel. The law is not designed to enforce minor offences such as parking violations at the moment, but there is a clause in the draft that would allow for all offences to be covered in the future. The bilateral agreements will also be expected to enforce payment of the penalty of an offence, although an operational practice has

to be established before this can be implemented across the continent. If the DGT do become able to enforce all offenses committed on other European roads, there is also a potential for a significant increase in revenue from fines that ma otherwise be ignored. The DGT estimate that 5% of all traffic on the nation´s roads are of foreign origin, and that somewhere between 875,000 and a million speeding offenses alone are committed by foreign drivers which go unpunished. The estimated increase in revenue to Spain alone has been put at one million euro per year at least.

STOPPING THE CLOCKING OF SECOND HAND CARS “Clocking” cars, or Odometer Tampering as it´s officially know, was said to be standard practice when selling a second hand car in Spain, with private owners and dealers turning back the time of wear and tear by fraudulently claiming the distance travelled by the vehicle was much less than reality, thus increasing the potential resale value of the vehicle. However, the Spanish government have issued an amendment to Royal Decree 224/2008, relating to the “general rules for installation and operation of stations for technical inspection of vehicles”, or ITV stations as we might know them, that from December the 31st this year, those ITV stations who carry out the vehicle inspections must

report and record “the odometer reading at the time of the inspection if it is available”. The Spanish based European Automobile Associates, the AEA, has made this recommendation on a number of occasions in the past and applaud the action as “a measure of protection for used car buyers, who are more and more numerous in Spain”.

AR OUND ORIHUEL A AND THE COST A The Department of Infrastructure, Maintenance Services of Orihuela has made a small fortune this week, by tidying up the municipal cleaning storage and adding other junk found whilst cleaning up Rubalcava during the rains before Easter, and selling the 3,540 kilos of surplus product and tools, accumulated over the past few years and now unusable, for scrap. Given the weight of the items scavenged, the technicians of the department estimated that the town hall may be about 1,000 euro better off, not bad for useless scrap just lay around, which will go towards paying off the municipal debt.

Leading Partido Popular politician, David Costa, often tipped in the past to have been Mónica Lorente´s replacement as a future mayor, has stepped down after 10 years as president of the new generation of PP members, the Nuevas Generaciones del Partido Popular de Orihuela, making way for 23 year old Antonio Sánchez, a civil engineering student, who Costa has described as “passionate about politics and passionate about Orihuela”. During the handover ceremony held on Tuesday at the headquarters of the PP, Costa advised his successor to be “aware of their new responsibilities as President in the most important political formation of the moment”, whilst also emphasising the strength behind the new and fresher team.

Orihuela Local police arrested a 45 year old man, said to be of Russian nationality, who was found to have been driving in the Aquamarina area of the Orihuela Costa, despite providing a positive result for alcohol which was four times the permitted limit. The officers observed the vehicle driving erratically and proceeded to stop the driver, who then performed a breath test which gave a result of 1.05 mlg / l, while the legal limit is 0 25 mlg / l. He was therefore arrested and summoned to appear before a judge for a crime against road safety. Officers from the Orihuela Local Police arrested two women, aged 23 and 64, in a supermarket in Alameda del Mar this week accused of stealing 19 personal care products, with a total value of 68.67 euro. The officers received the call of the store´s security staff, who claimed to have detained two women who had been the authors of the theft and that he had escaped. They were apprehended, arrested and taken to the Guardia Civil barracks in Pilar de la Horadada.

Historic Orihuela cyclist Bernardo Ruiz, now 89 years of age, met with the Mayor of the municipality, Monserrate Guillén, and the councillor for sports, Luis Galiano, to announce that he has received an invitation from the organisers of the Tour de France, which this year celebrates its centenary, to attend a ceremony in Paris recognising the achievements of cyclists thorough the history of the race. Ruiz participated in eight races, finishing seven of them, and came third in 1952. He was also the first Spanish rider to win the Giro d'Italia stage, and was champion of Spain for five years.

WHAT EMERGENCY SERVICES CENTRE? Back in September 2010 the foundation stone of the new Emergency Services Centre in Orihuela Costa was officially laid by Valencian Government Minister for the Interior, Serafín Castellano, Orihuela Mayor, Monica Lorente and Chris Poole to great fanfare. At that time it was stated that this project was considered their top priority and that building would be fully operational by March 2012. The building meant to house the Local Police, Guardia Civil, National Police, Fire Brigade and Proteccion Civil, as well as the Red Cross and the SAMU ambulance service. What Orihuela Costa actually has is a building skeleton where no work has been undertaken for over a year. It is known that Orihuela Costa has a resident population of 33,227 that grows to over 75,000 during the peak holiday months. However far from having the new centre with the integration of emergency services the coast has recently had the emergency ambulance services night time provision cancelled in a cost cutting exercise by the Valencian Health Authority. A few voices have been raised about this, but as the reduced service will not be affecting those pampered cats of Orihuela and the coast mainly consists of expats who do not vote or have any political clout in either Valencia or Orihuela the action has taken place with little more than a few headlines in the local papers. The withdrawal of the service shows the utter contempt felt towards the residents of the coast. How is it that a population of 33,227 doesn’t warrant an adequate ambulance service? Could anyone even contemplate this happening to those fat cats living in Orihuela city? Of course this withdrawal of services would not have happened there; the councillors representing these inhabitants would have made their voices heard in the Valencian government. As long as Orihuela continues to have the administrative power over

Orihuela Costa the utter neglect of the coastal region will continue. The political machinery and make up of the council in Orihuela totally disenfranchises the residents of the coast. The system of proportional representation and the whole political apparatus is geared to have over representation from Orihuela and marginal or non existent representation for the coast. I feel nothing but sympathy for Bob Houliston who has the unenviable job of being a lone voice advocating for an area that should have as many councillors on the council as the city of Orihuela has. Until Orihuela Costa gains independence from Orihuela the coastal residents will continue to be treated as second class, second rate immigrants who don’t deserve appropriate services. Coastal revenue will continue to prop up the affluent city to the total detriment of Orihuela Costa residents. Sandpiper The population of Orihuela Costa need to ensure their voice is heard and the only way to achieve this is to ensure that residents are on the electoral register and make sure they vote in local elections.

PALM TREE PAVEMENT REPAIRS ANNOUNCED

Councillor for the Coast, Beaches and International Residents, Martina Scheurer, announced improvement work to the “pits” from which palm trees grow in Aguamarina. The Councillor explained that there are about 500 palm trees in this urbanization in Orihuela Costa which have been allowed to grow out of control, which have caused the roots to break the pavements. Scheurer has indicated that there was an evaluated report and credit retention on this project, made in 2010, but there is no explanation as to why these works have not been performed before. “Now we must also repair the pavements. Had it been done before, the damage would have been much less”, said Scheurer, who considered that the 15,000 euro originally allocated to repair the tree pits is now insufficient because they also need to fix the paving slabs. The councillor also pointed out that developing the specifications for remodelling La Regia Park in order to mainly drain rainwater hase begun “It is a large park (34,000 square meters) and could be a good meeting place”, she added, explaining that now the area turns into a “swamp” when it rains heavily. Scheurer advanced that “studies for a final drainage solution are being undertaken and I think summer is the best time to do the work”. The councillor has indicated that the sports area will be refurbished by resetting the fence and improving the sports courts. If the cost exceeds the allocated budget, the renovation project of the park will be divided into different phases.

EUROGOLF, LA MARQUESA 88 players took part in our Captain’s Day celebration and our Captain made it a day to remember. The forecast was not great and we had thunder storms the night before. However I am please to say that only a few of the late players got a bit wet, although it came down in torrents during the presentation. May I take this opportunity to thank all our sponsors, who are too many to mention, for their continued support. Although it was a slow round, there was lots of entertainment on the way. Phyllis, our Captain’s wife and her 3 sisters in situ on the 9th all dressed to kill as ‘Al’s Girls ‘. (well done girls for being so well turned out and spooky how all 4 girls look like each other ( their poor mother kept trying for a good girl!)). Our 4 ball was also amused to see one of our male players having a brilliant shot on the 15th (not) barely reaching past the steps up to the tee box (you know who you are Pat). What with buggies rolling away into bunkers balls bouncing down the paths it was an entertaining day. Thanks to our captain Alan for all his efforts into providing all the members an enjoyable day. BENIJOFAR GOLF SOCIETY Captains Day 15-5-13 The May meeting of the society was held at Altorreal and the Captain Steve Edwards, wanted it to be a day to remember, so he decided that a Medal would be played to commemorate his final day. There were gasps of disbelief when the players were informed of this as most of them hadn’t played a Medal round since departing the Uk ! Despite their misgivings, most players actually enjoyed the round with some decent scores being recorded and for some, a lesson to remember that a true round of golf is all about thinking and concentrating for the whole 18 holes and not just the holes they could score good points on. The greens were in very good condition and playing quite fast and there were repairs being carried out on some areas of the course but overall, the course was in fairly good condition. The weather forecast was for rain at about 2pm, but despite plenty of thunder and some lightning in the distance, we only had five minutes of rain so we were very lucky in that respect. Traditionally the Captain makes the first drive of the day and nearest to this wins a prize. Well for those who know the first at Altorreal, the Captains drive ended in the hedge alongside the tee, much to the amusement of the members and despite using a bright orange ball, it was not found, so a hasty second shot was played down the middle and the day began with Geoff Moulds winning the nearest drive. The nearest the pin with the third shot on the first par five was won by Andy Trefry and the best second shot nearest the pin on the thirteenth was won by Pete Roberts. Best front nine score was won by Duncan Williamson and the best back nine was recorded by Tony Clarke. Nearest the pin winners were Dave Smith (guest) on the fifth and on the eighth was Paul Whatley. On the back nine, the winners were Ken Sivell on the tenth and Paul Whatley again on the seventeenth. Best score on the par three’s was Paul Whatley with eleven points and and par five winner was John Kemp with ten points. There were quite a few players with net scores in the mid seventies and in third place on a higher handicap was Gordon Barclay with a net seventy three. In second place by virtue of a lower handicap was John Sanchez also with a net seventy three. Overall winner on the day was Carol Firth who shot a gross seventy nine to record a net score of seventy two and the only player to break par. The presentations were made back at Sams bar in Quesada where food was laid on by the landlady Maureen and we were entertained by an eccentric singer who thought he was a reincarnated cowboy ! SHIP HISPANIOLA GS For this months meeting we visited the established course at La Ramblas under the excellent society deal arranged for us by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. THE 113th U.S. OPEN commences on June 13th on the East Course at the Merion Golf Club, Pennsylvania. It will be the fifth U.S. Open played on the course. Lee Trevino won the title there in 1971. Australian David Graham won in 1981 hitting every fairway and green. Being an old course, the East is quite short at 6,996 yds and par 70. Keeping the ball on the fairway and hitting a high percentage of the small greens will decide the winner at Merion, where the rough is like a jungle. The Merion Golf Club dates from 1896, and is one of the shrines of American golf. The floorboards of the venerable clubhouse creak underfoot. Designed by Scottish immigrant Hugh Wilson in 1910, the East course has many features derived from famous British courses. Fourteen year old Bobby Jones played here in 1916. Strict rules apply; no electronic devices, no rangefinders, no mobile phones. This is actually welcomed by the members, who can tell the office: “I’m going to Merion, you won’t be able to reach me.” It could be the most peaceful U.S. Open for a long time. Unless Garcia is paired with Woods. In that case, if you believe the press, it will be Gunfight at the East Course Corrall. AFTER THE BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth on May 23rd, Ian Poulter, Justin Rose, Paul Lawrie and Paul McGinley will head for Chiswick to take part in a revolutionary new golf game. Zone Golf is a team game played over nine par 3 holes. Each green has three coloured “zones” with a hole and flag in each zone: green ( easy) amber (medium) and red (hard.) Each team must nominate a zone, successful shots to that zone earn three, six or nine points, with additional points available for making par, birdie or

hole in one. Over three thousand fans are expected at Dukes Meadows for the Bank Holiday event, which it is hoped will prove as popular as 20/20 cricket. PADDY’S POINT GOLF SOCIETY - CAPTAIN’S DRIVE IN An excellent turnout of 44 players arrived at La Finca to watch Sean McCarthy, our new Captain for 2013/14 drive in. The weather was good but forecasts for the afternoon were showers. In the afternoon the skies were getting blacker in the distance and the thunder rumbled, the storm blew all around us but the rain held off until well after the last golfer came in. The course was in a great condition, we play there often and it was in the best condition for a very long time. Many thanks to Salvador and his staff for the day. All the players surrounded Sean on the first tee for his drive and he didn't disappoint by banging it straight down the middle of the fairway which was more than you could say for the rest of his four ball! After the game it was back to Paddy's Point for a warming curry at which stage the rain came with a vengeance together with hailstones. We certainly had a lucky escape with the weather earlier in the day. Many thanks to Hazel and her staff for their hospitality as always. WOLFPACK GS - BENIDORM CUP Entrants from Staffordshire, Aberdeen, the Red Rose County and the Premiere County had all flown to Spain especially for this event. We also had three members from the prestigious St James´s Gate Society in our midst. Having travelled to Benidorm on Thursday, we returned south to Alicante for the Society day and the first round of this annual three round event. Senior Tyke, Bryan Hirst, had a premonition about the result but just like Mother Shipton of Knarsborough, it was wrong. Day 2 With some trepidation we arrived at the Benidorm Poniente course, par 62 with eight par 4´s & 10 par 3´s. - Interesting is probably the best way to describe this track, but late nights appears to enhance some peoples golf. The Irish team who called themselves, Mna na h-Eiream [The Irish women], were suffering from a couple of injuries when they arrived on Wednesday. However, after joining in with the Thursday club play session and getting used to the high bounce on the Campoamor courts, their injuries held up and they were raring to go on Friday morning at 10 am.

DOUBLE PODIUM FOR SUPERMOTO BROTHERS For the first time this year both of the British Supermoto racing brothers from Murcia were in action at the 2nd round of the Valencian championship at Oliva, near Denia. The brothers were in devastating form, with Mat Ford-Dunn racing in the SM Masters class and younger brother Anthony in the tougher SM Open category. Both brothers were trying new rear suspension parts that made the handling of the bikes near perfect for the fast flowing corners of the Oliva race track. Qualifying went well, with Anthony 2nd in his class and Mat on pole for the SM masters. With the two classes racing together it was the first time this year that the brothers had lined up on the same grid. The first of their two races saw Anthony lead the opening laps before being overtaken by Spanish Ace, Israel Esclarera. The two riders battled hard for the rest of the race with Israel taking the win with Anthony a very close 2nd. Mat was a little too keen away from the start of the first race and had to make a jump start, stop and go penalty before rejoining the race. The penalty didn’t stop him from charging through the field to finish a close 2nd behind the leader in the SM Masters class. The 2nd race saw Anthony repeat his fantastic start from race 1 and this time he opened up a small lead until a mistake in the dirt section allowed Israel past and Anthony had to be content with another 2nd position. Mat managed a clean start this time, and soon battled his way into the lead of the SM masters class, opening up a lead to finish first at the flag and take the overall SM masters victory with his 2nd-1st results. Anthony managed a superb 2nd overall in the much tougher SM Open class with his two 2nd positions. RUNNING WILD A.C. UP-DATE..........By John Pascoe Members of the Los Dolses running club were in attendance at some differing venues over the last two weekends :III Almoradi 10K (6/5/13). This event held on the Saturday evening attracted a large entry but only two ladies from Running Wild were available. Club newcomer, Monica McGranaghan, showed much ability with a 3rd place “Vet A” in 45:25. Also successful was Frauke Gerlach, 2nd in “Vet F” (Over 60 category, despite her 75 years). Frauke also collected a trophy & flowers as the oldest lady competitor. Aberystwyth 5K Parkrun No. 36 (11/5/13). Arthur Rushton (Vet >65) running only his second race following a recent debut 5K in Orihuela City, was accompanied by experienced & talented family member, Keith Richards (Vet >40). They finished in 34:21, giving Arthur an “Age Related Percentage” of 49.73%, which bettered figures set by 6 other athletes. “Race for Life” 5K, Aberystwyth (12/5/13). The large number of entrants to this Cancer Charity event were not deterred by the very wet conditions. Julie & Karen Rushton were lead in by 6 year old Ellie Richards in under 40 mins., after dodging around the many walkers along the route. Footnotes : The Club are already planning for next February´s Seville Marathon & possible acceptances into the London Marathon. Some members are also proposing to attend the Triathlon at Campoamor on Sun., 19th to watch & weigh-up chances of competing at future races.

ABBEY ANGLING MATCH FISHING By Terry Screen This week’s 8th round of the Spring Series was fished at Nancy’s on the 14th May, as once again it was transferred from the river at Murcia due to no access under the bridge as it is still flooded and the water at the bottom of the ramp is still too deep to enable passage through. The river at Nancy’s is still running quite fast below the boom and to make matters worse (and I know because I fished the first peg below the boom), a JCB type digger was working there for nearly 3 hours clearing the trapped vegetation, bottles, dead dogs, birds etc, even the men raking the stuff along the boom were wearing face masks. A lot of the vegetation was escaping under the boom and these were forming rafts of at least 2metres in diameter making a problem holding bottom with the line looking like a clothes line. CARP-R-US CLUB NEWS After losing the last 3 matches because of the flooding etc, things got back to a semblance of normality with our match on the Eden Canal last Thursday. Joint winners on the day were Dave Hill and Pete Kerr with a weight of 6.96kilos, in third place was Steve Collins with 5.18 kilos and fourth was Dennis Pick with 4.96 kilos. The next match will be fished on 23rd May on the River Segura in Murcia Town Centre. At the moment, the bank is in good condition, but you still cannot get under the bridge. If you intend to fish, you must book it with Barry or Dave by Wednesday evening, otherwise you risk not being included in the match. The following Thursday, May 30th, the Club should be fishing the Embalse de Pedrera, but as the water levels are rising, it may be necessary to book an alternative venue. The next Quiz night is on 28th May, commencing at 7.30. The cost is 1€ per person and teams of 6 or less can take part. A game of Play Your Cards Right will be held on the evening. The next Club meeting is on Sunday June 2nd, with the Committee meeting at 10.00 and the General Meeting at 11.00. The Club are organising a Pork roast for Saturday 28th June, commencing at 5.30. With no league games to report for the next two weeks our game on Tuesday with the Highjackers was a relief from the hustle-bustle. Needless to say, the game was played in the same good spirit as always resulting in an overall win for the Emerald Isle, losing on only one rink. However, our monthly meeting means much more than the result whichever way it goes, and long may it continue.

The world famous Egg Cup Challenge versus San Luis. The scheduling of the Valencian Championships left Thursday of the first week free at La Siesta enabling the club to play the first of the two games for this year's Egg Cup Challenge against San Luis. Despite potential problems with the weather, and with the green looking particularly spruce, 42 players met to resolve the ownership of the Eggcup Trophy for the next year. The games could barely have been closer with two drawn games and two wins for La Siesta against three for San Luis. As always the match was played in the friendliest manner and the morning was marked by the good humour and lack of rancour so typical of the Egg Cup. The final game of the series is on Friday 24th May at San Luis with the club trailing 6-8 and everything to play for. Social Evening 7th June. Our next Social Night at the club is Friday 7th June and takes the form of a Beetle Drive. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important to the Club that these events are supported by as many Members as possible, so please round up your Friends and Family and do your best! Thank you. EURONICS THURSDAY DART LEAGUE “THE ELECTRICAL SHOP” - BLUE LAGOON

CUP FINAL RESULTS HELD AT BREAKAWAYS 16 MAY 2013 The venue was Breakaways, the occasion the Euronics KO Cup Finals and Presentation to conclude 8 months of excellent arrow throwing. The league championship having been determined two weeks earlier, Gogarty´s taking the crown for the first time, made way for the four knock out competitions, the first of which was the Sunworld Team KO between the Hub Meerkats and the Rendezvous Bulls. Nearest the bull determined first throw which the Kats won. Scrappy scoring from both sides ended with Alex Nikolov finishing D2 for the first leg. John Eyre did the most damage in the scoring department in the next for Paul Durrant to hit D10 for 2-0. Eyre continued his high scoring, the Bulls Graham Dunning countering with 80 and 140. Requiring 25 Durrant used two darts for S17,D4 and 3-0. Enter Terry Hagenaars, Trevor Hartley and Amanda Skinner for the Bulls in the second triples to face Graham Todd, Tomas Piwczyk and Alan Ostrowski. As expected the Hag quickly found his form with 85, 135 and 77 to set up Skinner for D7 and 3-1. Skinner´s 100 and 124 in the next gave the Hag the opportunity for D16 and 3-2 despite some decent scoring from Ostrowski and Todd. Hartley did his bit for the triple finishing 55 on S15,D20 and 3 apiece. All change for the third triple, Eyre, Durrant and Nikolov to face Boris Ostrowski, the Hag and Phil Waller. Good all round scoring from the Kats was countered by a lone 132 from the Dutchman. Eyre completed the 701 points on D2. Dunning came in for Waller in the next and opened with 100, but two tons and an 81 were enough for the Kats to go 5-3 up through Durrant on 52 (S12,D20). Waller came back in for Ostrowski in the next with Kats captain Derek Kingsbury keeping the same trio that did all the damage in the semis against Gogarty´s. The choice of Waller was a wise one as he top scored for his team with 100,83,81 and D10 even though the Kats had five 80 plus scores. The scoring continued with the highest being the finish by the Hag going out on an excellent 115 game shot (T20,S15,D20), levelling the score at 5-5. The Dutchman was really flying in the next with 100,140 which was equalled by Durrant in a very tight leg. Nikolov was left with 20 points

which was converted in two for 6-5. Waller´s 81 and 100 in the next were not enough as Eyre 85 and Durrant 125 and 93 to leave D10 was converted by Nikolov to win the cup 7-5. It was the fifth consecutive year the Kats have taken the title. A great match touched with some controversy over the rules. The first round played on 8th November with the feedback received thereafter deeming the format too short, some matches were over in 45 minutes, no good for the players or for the bar owners. The committee therefore altered the format to a longer version and published the change on the league table distributed monthly by the committee in time for the next round on December 13th. The exact changes were also published in the Leader newspaper week commencing 3rd December. The rules over substitutions are quite clear and impossible to misinterpret if read. Ironically since the amendment the quarter and semi finals have been played (a total of 6 matches) presumably under the amended format and rules. The Gogarty´s Ladies Singles followed the KO Cup with an all Busters final, Babs Warren v Shirley Roberts. Warren won the bull for throw and quickly posted 100,85 and 61 to leave 40. Roberts wasn’t in her usual form and Warren used 3 darts to complete the 501 on D10. The second leg was a closer affair, both players scoring well, but it was Warren again to finish the leg on D10 for 2-0. Throwing first in the third leg Warren opened up with 100 and 81, Roberts had her best leg but it wasn’t enough as Warren edged her way to a double. Needing just 4 points Warren planted her second dart into D2 for the leg and match. A quality final with the magnificent Gogarty´s trophy sitting proudly in Busters. The pairs final featured an all Gogarty´s affair with the 2012 champions James Brown and Chris O´Brien pitched against the powerful duo of Ali O´Keeff and Paul Easton. 28 scores of 80 plus were recorded in the four legs played of a tremendous match. O´Keeff won the bull and kicked off with a ton, Easton contributed two 80 pluses. O´Brien´s 95 with Brown´s 2x100 were just enough to give Brown a chance of a double which he accepted, finishing on D5. Brown´s 2x100, 80 and 82 were insufficient in the second as Easton hit D20 for 1-1. Things really warmed up in the third as O´Keeff 85,100 and Easton 100 and 112 vied with Brown 97 and 84,

O´Brien pitching in with 83 and 80 for the advantage. This time it was O´Keeff with the honours hitting D20 for 2-1. It was score for score in the fourth, 7 scores of 80 plus left both pairs on shots. Easton requiring 48 planted his first dart in single 8 and next in D20 for the leg and match 31. The trophy remains in Gogarty´s for another year with O´Keeff and Easton worthy champions. A little later Brown featured in the Singles final against Phil Waller from the Bulls. Waller had really got going in the earlier cup final hitting some great scores in the final four legs. It didn’t quite happen for him in the final although it was closer than the score line suggests. The man from the Bulls won the bull and opened up with 95 and 98, Brown´s 97 left the leg very close, both players being on a shot. Needing 76 Brown´s first dart found T20, the second S8 and the third dead centre of D4. Having broken Waller´s throw Brown threw first in the second and quickly found the treble with 81 and 100. Waller kept with him on 85, 81, but the Gopher had first chance of an out and requiring 54 hit S14,D20 for 2-0. Waller had throw in the third but couldn’t get the trebles he is capable of. Brown´s 95,125 and 82 left Waller struggling and with three well placed darts Brown left himself with just 40 points on the score board. On his next visit he landed D20 for the leg, match and title. Brown now has to find the room for the Singles, Pairs and League Championship trophies in his bustling Gogarty´s bar. The Presentation followed with Debbie Mackleston of Euronics (El Galan) handing out this year´s awards which followed an excellent hot and cold buffet courtesy of Breakaways proprietors Jay Sharp and Sarah Simpson. TORREVIEJA LADIES DAR TS TENTH ANNUAL PRESENTATION The Torrevieja Ladies Darts league held their Tenth Annual Presentation Night at the Quesada Country Club last weekend where almost a hundred players and guests turned up to celebrate, wine and dine. The evening was arranged by Secretary Pam Horton who opened the proceedings with presentations to Kevin Reardon, Sheila and Peter Clements and Geoff Lloyd for their services to the league. Following the presentation of flowers to the lady captains, anniversary badges and certificates to players who had achieved tons, high tons, 180’s, bull finishes, least darts, high checkouts, most improved players,

VARDAN HITS THREE AS REDS LIFT PREFERENTE CROWN UD HORADADA ................5 ALGUENA CF ....................0 With one of the worst returns in recent years, just 17 points from their 33 Preferente fixtures, Alguena CF had been facing the drop into Regional Football for virtually the entire 2nd half of the season. Horadada, on the other hand, had been enjoying life at the other end of the table and when the two met at the Ikomar on Sunday, the writing seemed on the wall for a Reds victory that would ensure they went into the end of season playoffs having confirmed their position as league champions. Needing all 3 points if they were to avoid being overhauled by long time challengers Almoradi they were given the best possible start when Vardan opened the scoring on 2 minutes. Fed through by Antonio the forward turned Alguena’s Serra before beating Kasu with a clinical finish from 10 yards. Thereafter it was the home side that dominated the exchanges but, despite opportunities galore, a combination of a poor final touch together with awful finishing, saw the Reds unable to add to their early goal during the first 45 minutes. And there were notable openings for a host of players. Robles, Javi Luiz, Titi and Vardan should all have done rather better with their chances, Vardan especial-

ly when, on 36 minutes, he was played through by Javi Ruiz. With time to pick his spot he inexplicably pushed the ball too far in front allowing Kasu to pick it off his toes. The Alguena keeper was injured in the challenge and was replaced in goal by Angel just moments later. The score line then remained unchanged through to the half time interval. The second period saw the Reds fulfill the promise that they had suggested during the first 45 with Vardan especially on song. But it was not until Pedreno brought on Cristian, Ensa and Luiz that the goals really started to flow. Always in control the three substitutions were the catalyst needed to open the floodgates. After Vardan had tapped in his second following a mistake by the substitute keeper Cristian was on the scoresheet within minutes of joining the fray. An exquisite move down the left by the two goal hero saw Vardan cross for the Horadada sub to crash in from 18 yards. Cristian then returned the compliment allowing Vardan to tap in for his third of the afternoon. There was then a period where three were cleared off the Alguena line before Javi hit a dipping free kick which fooled everybody to make it five. And so regardless of Almoradi’s 2-0 success at Villena the Reds were crowned champions after a thrilling climax to the league season. But now the real task starts in earnest with the draw for the Preferente playoffs taking place at lunchtime on Monday. We wait with interest to see who Horadada will meet.

Votes were cast by members during the last month and the ballot proved to be one of the closest in recent years. There were a number of worthwhile contenders from across the entire squad with Alex coming out on top by the narrowest of margins. The presentation was made the Annual BBQ and Social which was held at the Ikomar Stadium last Thursday evening with Mick Hardy and Trevor Hook officiating.

Alex also featured in the poll for keepers as did a number of other Horadada players in the general classification. The visitors were reduced to 10 after the dismissal of Jorge on 80 minutes but despite continuous Burriana pressure a rare Torry attack saw Luis Carlos set up the powerful Koemann for his 13th goal of the season. So, a good run in April and May saw Torrevieja achieve the dizzy league placing of 12th while defeat saw their opponents slip into the bottom four for the very first time on the final day of the season to drop once more into regional football.

ELCHE LOSE THE BATTLE BUT WIN THE W AR! UD ALMERIA ...........................2 ELCHE CF ................................1 Thanks to Alcorcon’s draw on Friday evening against Barcelona ‘B’, Elche knew, at long last that they were being promoted back to the mighty La Liga - Real Madrid, Barcelona and all after a gap of 24 years away from the big time. So the Illicitanos’ team selection reflected that fantastic achievement, with Aaron, Pelayo and Flano replacing Mantecon, Generelo and Suarez. In the last pre-season ‘friendly’ just before this sensational season Almeria played Elche off their own park to win convincingly 4 – 1, Elche’s only goal coming from a penalty – and I was worried. The Franjiverdes didn’t impress – and Almeria did… Sunday’s noon kick off in Almeria’s huge stadium with a large number of jubilant away supporters swathed in green and white soon saw Elche fall behind. After only eight minutes a free kick on the right was flicked on to Christian whose vicious left foot strike gave Herrera no chance. On the quarter hour Elche’s Aaron was clear through, he rounded Almeria’s goalkeeper Estaban only to see his shot cleared off the line. But the real thing came on the half hour as Albacar chipped a high ball down the middle, helped on by a defender leaving the quicksilver Coro to draw Estaban and slide in the equaliser. Five minutes before half-time another free kick cleared the Elche wall and Falque caught it at the by-line, pulling it back past Herrera for the big bruiser Soriano to slide it in from a yard out. 2 – 1 it remained into the second half with chances coming and going at both ends. There were one or two hold-your-breath moments at both ends, but the game finished with huge relief for Almeria in the second equal, sweaty position – which fortunately Elche aren’t: bin there, done that, endured the agony… So now it’s Elche who are deservedly top: played 39, won 22, drawn 11, lost 6, goals for 50. against 25, a record-breaking points 77 with 3 games to go. Wow, what an achievement, which, as above did NOT look on at the start. But huge credit goes to coach Fran Escriba, his staff and the players. There are some real stars out there, little Coro, top scorer and find of the season, safe as houses goalkeeper Manu Herrera and right back Damian Suarez. But my player of the season is one stalwart who has been with the club for five seasons, centre-back and defensive rock Xabier Etxeita. He’s hardly missed a game, scored four vital goals but it is his strong interceptive presence and defensive intuition that has helped Elche through many dodgy times this season, as opposed to the heartbreaking season before when Elche led the league for the first half of the season, but trailed off so abjectly in the second – which of course makes this promotion so very much sweeter, having tasted bitter defeat so often – like two seasons ago when the Illicitanos were denied promotion in the final play-off against Granada only on an away goal, everything was equal. Still three games to go, and now with the points secured it’s only whether or not Elche will be champions – I think they will. It’s a great feeling after all the nail-biting that supporters have to do. Real Madrid’s ‘B’ team RM Castilla are coming to Elche’s mighty Martinez Valero stadium next Sunday evening at 5pm - if you fancy a celebration! Mucho Elche!
