IN TORREVIEJA WE INVEST!

It is reported that 30% of the entire budget of the municipality of Torrevieja goes on salaries of town hall staff and councillors, who, incidentally, also get free healthcare, glasses and dentistry, all paid for by the residents of course. But, having become synonymous with waste in the past, throwing copious amounts of money at major projects, yet

another such development has now been abandoned in Torrevieja. In recent years, under the management of former Mayor, Pedro Hernández Mateo, we saw the infamous “cigar” project shelved, which was set to become a health spa on the natural salt lakes of the city, at a cost of 1.5 million euro, only one of the three buildings ever materialised, and even that was never completed, before the project was halted in the middle of the decade. The Pascual Flores ship replica, nicknamed “Pedro´s Boat” by many, as he was seemingly the only person allowed to use it, with an original cost of 180,000 euro to buy the wreck, the ship now has an approximate value of 2 million euro, but she is falling into decay, due to lack of maintenance, as she has never moved since 2008, despite the 3,000 euro bill for maintaining the engines this year and the electricity supply for the other two boats in the floating museum costing 700 euro per month, which may have been acceptable for the residents to be paying, before the admission fee to visit the boats was added on top, meaning a double fee from the tax payers, unless you go when it´s quiet and free. There have also been many other reports of smaller waste on a grand scale, which everybody knows all adds up. Paying 422 euro for a door handle to the gateway of the Eras del la Sal might be a questionable expense, but not so much as the tax payers of the city paid over 100 euro on heart shaped lollipops to give away at Valentine´s day. More than 2,000 euro on makeup for the Three Kings could have no doubt been cheaper, as could the 2,800 euro bill for a tent to cover them and their pages for two nights. Quite how just short of 3,000 euro can be spent on carnival confetti might be a surprise for some, especially considering there must be reams of paper that administrators would sooner shred which could have been used. We mustn´t forget the musical auditorium, a 40 million euro “state of the art” development, with classrooms for the best musical students, conference rooms, offices and purpose designed performance areas that could hold almost 2,000 people, shrouded in controversy over licensing and use, only really being used as a rather grand estate agent, for an occasional information seminar and little more, apart from the occasional concert, as musical events are held on the beach, on the historic Eras de la Sal and in the empty land situated near what was to become a new attraction for the city, with the market and fun fair all being relocated, revitalising an area that is one of the few to have suffered from the Zenia Boulevard development, after the casino moved from its home to the bordering municipality, waving Torrevieja goodbye, and taking the people who would visit along too. It is that development which has now seen a u-turn, albeit finally suggesting making the decision for which no action was seemingly being taken, with the Government having spent another 1.7 million euro to relocate the funfair to the 23,000 square meter plot that opened last summer next to Avenida de Delfina Viudes, that space will no longer be intended to be used for the reason the money was spent, leaving the funfair in the current location within the city centre. The mayor has still not ruled out a move in the future though. Despite the waste, the reason for the decision is that plans abandoned in 2010 to regenerate the portside area of the city, have been given a new lease of life. The plans would see the development of sports facilities, leisure and shopping outlets, large open areas, including a “green lung” retreat within the hustle and bustle, all in an area that has already seen some minor developments such as the opening of a roadway through the port, and the removal of fences and walls making the harbour area already more attractive, after they were installed in the 1960´s. The The original 80 million euro project was halted due to lack of liquidity and investment, and the town hall will still be looking for funding for this latest proposal, but rather than a major development as before, they now see the plan coming to fruition in stages, with some of the larger elements, such as commercial centres planned by the previous mayor, being dropped. The tender process could potentially open later in the year, although that has also been said before and the current mayor, Eduardo Dolón, still wanting to outline the plans from the city´s point of view. So it would seem that despite the waste of previous and current administrations, money which could have been so easily invested in other areas for improvement, both in Torrevieja or even beyond their boundaries but still within the jurisdiction of Valencia, the plans for the future are still continuing. Torrevieja is clearly still able to gain funding for schools, has first class medical facilities, entertainment and leisure attractions, but the support of local traders and businesses has been lacking of late, so it remains to be seen how much support another major development will bring, when the plight of those already in the city is ignored, with street after street filled with the remnants of a bustling city that Torrevieja once was, now just a skeleton of the once prosperous hub.

Valued at euro 2 million the Pascual Flores is now falling into decay, due to lack of maintenance

20,000 PEOPLE PARTY IN CAMPOAMOR In the early hours of Wednesday morning, according to official sources, between 20,000 and 30,000 people participated in a “macro botellón”, an unlicensed and therefore illegal gathering of music and alcohol, which took place in the Campoamor are of the Orihuela-Costa. Although supported by some members of the town hall in previous years, this year the administrative group sought to do what they could to deter and prevent the illegal, dangerous and costly activity taking place. A team of more than 100 officials, made up of security and police forces, health and emergency groups, had been on standby in anticipation for the announcement of the date of the party, which is normally done thought social network sites and at very short notice. The team took action to avoid serious consequences anticipated in managing such a large crowd of people, concentrated mostly in the la Glea area, thus avoiding a tragedy which may have so easily occurred, as was the case when an oversized group of people took to a party in Madrid in October, in which three people were trampled to death and council officials face legal action and potential convictions for manslaughter. The city of Orihuela had warned, also through social networks, that the gathering did not have necessary authorisation, and that they would do everything possible to prevent the party taking place. The mayor of Orihuela, Monserrate Guillén, who also holds the role of responsibility for Emergencies and Public Safety in the municipality, wanted to publicly thank the work of all officers involved in security at the event, which also included the Guardia Civil from Torrevieja, as well as the traffic department from Alicante. The Municipal Police also expanded its services

with two rapid response vehicles on duty throughout the evening. Along with the Cruz Roja, and beach emergency teams, all coordinated through a central control point, although not through the multi-purpose emergency coordination centre, as this is yet another project waiting funding and completion by the regional government. The security teams monitored the entrances to the area, restricting vehicles from entering, recording those allowed to pass through, and successfully seizing a wealth of illegal materials from narcotics to weaponsThe Mayor also stressed that the cleanup operation was completed in just two hours after the conclusion of the concentration, although this bill is once paid for by the residents of the municipality, rather than the thousands of people who came and left their rubbish on the coastal area. The Mayor did conclude that the operation was successful, thanks to the cooperation of everybody involved. They will now be studying the data collated and, according to Guillén, study ways and measures to prevent such mergers without permission or control, occurring in the future.

O PPOSITION STILL BATTLING FOR POW ER

The Partido Popular opposition group of Orihuela, along with Bob Houliston of the CLARO group and Asunción Mayoral from the CLR, both of who were expelled from the government, collectively signed a Censure Motion which they intended would return them to power in the municipality within weeks. The group had attempted the move once before, only to fall at the last hurdle when one of the PP members, Rodríguez Barberá, refused to sign as the regional Partido Popular had not given their approval for the former Mayor, Mónica Lorente, to lead the party as she faced a court hearing in a potential fraud case. With Barberá refusing to sign, so did Asunción Mayoral, stating that she would only put her name to the document if the entire PP group were behind it. The regional group did object to Lorente leading the way, making their feelings clear, which resulted in a standoff for a while, until Pepa Ferrando emerged as the one to lead the party instead of Lorente, which gained the approval of the regional administration, allowing all twelve to sign, although with Mayoral still flaunting her insecurities by being the last person to put her name to it. In order for the motion to be legally valid, the opposition requires a minimum of 13 signatures, and with the 14 they now have, it seemed likely to proceed, but the validity of both Houliston and Mayoral was still brought into question, thus rendering their signatures invalid, taking the opposi-

tion back down to 12 votes, one below the minimum. Specifically, the ruling issued by the city clerk said that, “The motion does not meet the requirements of Article 197.1 of the Electoral Regime Law General”. However, seemingly ignoring the legal standing, the 12 councilors of the PP and the two not assigned presented the motion to the city clerk. The Mayor of the municipality, Monserrate Guillén, said that “Mónica Lorente and Pepa Ferrando have been made fools of again, and have shown that instead of worrying about the problems of Orihuela, they only care about the scandal with their own party”, continuing, “I regret that the provincial and regional presidents of their party have allowed this shameful spectacle”. The general secretary for the PSOE Gaspar Zarrías, has Deputy Secretary General of Regional Policy and Local PP, Javier Arenas, to “stop once and for all, all attempts to file a censure motion”, because, in his opinion, Orihuela “needs” a government that “carries out its work with honesty and transparency", and stressed that in the list of signatories of the motion, “there are four people charged for alleged corruption, and two defectors”. The motion could still be presented and carried, if the motion obtains the support of the other original two members of the CLR – CLARO group, those of both Pedro Mancebo and Juan Ignacio López-Bas. Mancebo has long said that he would do anything to prevent Lorente becoming mayor, but as this door has been forced closed on her, this may be a viable option, but that too would cause friction between Houliston and Mencebo, as was clear in the final period of their partnership.

The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, along with the spokesman for the Government of Torrevieja, Joaquín Albaladejo, who led the campaign of the PP in the last municipal elections, appeared in court this week as defendants for alleged electoral offenses committed in 2011. In a case already filed with the Superior Court of Justice in relation to the former mayor, Pedro Hernández Mateo. The case dates back to May, 2011, during the last municipal election campaign, when the PSOE filed a complaint on the grounds that the PP held a rally at the Municipal Theatre, violating a resolution of the Board of Elections agreed two days earlier. In giving evidence, Albaladejo said before the judge that the assignment of spaces for campaign events was performed with “equal opportunity” to all political parties. Dolón also stated that municipal technicians reported in favour of holding a rally in the venue. The case continues.

Torrevieja was turned into the backdrop for yet another music video this week, with popular Spanish singer Lys Prado choosing to record her latest video in front of the mountains of salt collected from the natural Salinas. “No me hables, no me hables” is the name of the song to look out for, which also featured views of the salt lakes from the terrace of the Hotel Doña Monse of Torrevieja. The song is included in the new album that the singer has dedicated to her father, Luis Pardo, with the most representative songs of his career. The former tourist information office situated at Plaza Capdepont in Torrevieja is to be converted into a police station, specifically for use by the GRO operational task force who deal with the illegal street traders in the city, amongst other things. This development is in addition to the new police office announce a few weeks ago, following the closure of the foreigner´s office near the old windmill, a move the town hall praised themselves for saving 22,000 euro per year rent. This extra office will now open in the next few weeks and can be used by both the local police and the Guardia Civil, who also had a similar sized office in the harbour area, until that was demolished. One of the principal historic tourist attractions in the city of Torrevieja, the Eras de la Sal, a site which benefitted from a modernisation investment some years ago, and having played host to a handful of musical events, as well as the site of a Medieval market and ice rink some years ago, will remain closed to the public in the future, for fear that opening the site may result in damage by people using it. However, the location is being proposed as one of a number of places which the municipality may offer as a location for weddings, in exchange for a fee of course. The location, which is situated next to the new, multipurpose tourist information office, has been proposed along with other attractions such as the Park of Nations and the Doña Sinforosa park.

THE TRANSISTORY EXPAT As a newspaper reporter in Spain’s Costa Blanca, I quickly came to love and admire some of my fellow expats, who were enthusiastically determined not to let old age and growing infirmity get in the way of having a really good time. Clubs and associations flourished everywhere and new ones seemed to be appearing all the time. From salsa classes, brass bands and stamp collecting to tap dancing for the over eighties, there really was something for everyone to enjoy. I sometimes wondered how they all had the energy, as we were summoned to various neighbours’ terraces for “a quick drink” that rarely ended until two o'clock the following morning. It came as some surprise when a British Consular official in the Costa Blanca told me during an interview that, “One must remember that the Brits come here to die.” The comment astounded and puzzled me, as the evidence that I had was completely to the contrary. British expats did anything and everything but move to Spain to die. I had never seen a livelier bunch of over seventies! Most intend to enjoy their retirement living in the sun, in a dream home, taking life easier and doing the things that they always wanted to do. Most have no intention of ever returning to the UK, and will enjoy an active retirement until they expire. I contrast this to expat life in the Canary Islands. One of the few things that I dislike is the transitory nature of life on the islands. It is

very difficult to make and keep friends who intend to stay for any length of time, and truly regard the islands as their permanent home. I know many people, after all it is a small community, but my heart sinks when I hear them talk about “going home to the UK”. By the time that we get to know them as friends, it seems that most have either lost their jobs, relationships have been destroyed, they are in financial difficulties or they cannot stand the heat (in more ways than one). Many realise too late that to truly enjoy life on these beautiful islands, they also have to put something back. Low pay, long hours, periods of unemployment and poor employment prospects really do have to be taken into account, and the less-than-determined expat quickly realises that there is no such thing as a free sun-bed. Unlike the Costa Blanca, many people that we know come and go after a few months or a few years. Very few intend to stay on the islands and make it their home. Of course, there are exceptions, but these are few. Sadly, due to the recession, and even before the recession, there are not jobs for all and many return to the countries of origin sadder, but wiser. We all value friendships, and I don’t mean cursory acquaintances, such as the “You must call and see me sometime” brigade, but those for whom you have a genuine empathy with and feeling for. These are the people that you would do anything for and know that it would be reciprocated. True friendships are rare and I guess most of us would count ourselves fortunate if we have enough true friends to match the

fingers of one hand. Island friendships are difficult to sustain and lack the support structures of the Costa Blanca. I now often find myself subconsciously gauging just how long new friends are likely to stay the course on the islands before I invest too much time and energy in getting to know them properly. Experience tells me that within a few months or a couple of years, most will return to the land of their birth and will become just another name on a Christmas card list. AIRPORT PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION Anyone Passing through San Javier airport will discover another side to the Mar Menor through a photographic exhibition "Fishermen" which is being run in the terminal by San Javier Department of until 25 August. The photographic exhibition, by Jose Luis Villaescusa is a tribute to the fishermen of Santiago de la Ribera where the profession provides a completely different image of the area to the sunny and crowded beaches. Councillor for the Environment, Celia Martinez, airport director Pedro Vicente Gallut, pedánea Mayor of Santiago de la Ribera, Julia Gallut and the photographer José Luis Villaescusa were all at the airport last week of officially open the exhibition which includes a section on "The arts fishing "with photographs showing the different fishing techniques that are typical to and characteristic of the Mar Menor.

LOCAL NEWS The AVE high-speed train will be getting faster after summer, with testing looking positive that will permit the trains to exceed 200 kilometres per hour in the Alicante to Albacete section, initially between September and October. The continuity of communication between the trains and the two signalling systems, the ERTMS2, the most advanced and approved at European level, and the ASFA, the most rudimentary, which basically depends on the expertise and the view of the driver, will have to be confirmed as functional before the increase is allowed, although the route is then said to become one of the safest in Europe. The aim will be to reduce the Madrid to Alicante journey time to just two hours and five minutes.

Airport director, Pedro Vicente, thanked the City of San Javier for having the prudence to bring the photographic exhibition to the airport that will be seen by thousands of people over the next two weeks.

SUMMER CARNIVAL FILLS RIBERA SEAFRONT

Amidst a blaze of colour the summer carnival was held last Saturday along the seafront at Santiago de la Ribera. It was jointly organized by la Comisión de Comparsas de Santiago de la Ribera in conjunction with the town’s department of Fiestas. Initially the Grand Parade involved about 600 people spread over twenty floats. In the three years that it has been in existence the number of participants has grown to over 2000 who now parade on over 50 floats. The Summer Carnival which is becoming increasingly larger that the July Parade has become one of the principle events of the summer in Santiago de la Ribera.

A maritime rescue team of the Protección Civil in San Javier rescued two occupants of a boat that caught fire while sailing in the waters of the Mar Menor, near the island of Barón. The incident occurred minutes before noon on Thursday, when the 112 emergency centre received notice that the occupants of a boat were in danger after a fire broke out on board. They immediately mobilized a rescue boat, with two crew members, and after locating at boat transferred the two people to their craft, both suffering from dizziness, but otherwise unharmed. The ship itself was burnt beyond repair and is now being monitored to prevent risk to bathers. Spanish Public ports handled 222.4 million tonnes of freight during the first six months of 2013, representing an overall decrease of 5.61% during the first six months of the year. However, the decline over a twelve month period was 2.2% from July 2012 to July this year, which the Ministry of Public Works said shows “slow, but steady, economic recovery”. On balance, there has been an increase in exports, from 37.5 million tons in 2012 to 41.2 million in 2013, which represented an increase of 9.7%, indicating how the domestic market is weaker. In Alicante, the harbour there showed an increase from 475,169 to 493,299 tonnes in the first six months.

Tragic news spread across law enforcement, security services and animal lovers alike today, with the announcement that one of their most treasured animal companions had passed away. Ajax the dog shot to fame in 2009, when assigned to royal protection duties, she was sent to the island of Mallorca to check for security risks prior to the King of Spain taking his holidays there. The next day, in the town of Palmanova at Palma de Mallorca, an ETA terrorist car bomb exploded under a Guardia Civil vehicle, killing two young officers instantly. Ajax went to the scene and successfully located another bomb under another patrol car, complete with motion detector, armed and ready to explode, intending to take even more lives. Thanks to Ajax´s intervention though, the area was cleared and a controlled explosion carried out, which dispersed shrapnel over a 100 metre radius. There is no doubt that the actions of this dog, and his handler, Sergeant Juan Carlos Alabarces, saved the lives of countless people, with even the UK´s PDSA awarding Ajax the highest bravery award possible for his work in saving lives, the canine equivalent to the George Cross. The Gold Medal of the PDSA is considered the highest honour that can be delivered to an animal for an act of outstanding courage or exceptional dedication to duty and social commitment. Shortly after the ceremony, Ajax was invited as guest of honour at a very regal lunch date, so that King of Spain himself, Juan Carlos, could thank Ajax personally for his work. At 12 years of age, Ajax still continued to serve in the Guardia Civil, albeit on lighter duties in his mature days, and the tragedy of his death will never dispel the legacy that this one dog could leave, a hero on four legs, for whom many owe their lives.

Although a delight to see for many, there are some who have filed complaints, but the presence of colonies of stray cats is one of the next issues the Orihuela town hall are looking to solve. According to the Councillor for the coast, Martina Schreurer, “One of these colonies living on the Paseo Maritimo of Aguamarina is getting bigger and bigger so that the town hall will have to take some action”. Although the aim is not to get rid of the cats, who many feel have a right to enjoy the coast as much as we do, it is hoped that by simple collaboration, the matters of complaint can be addressed, whilst also taking action to control the growth of the colonies by spaying and neutering the animals. The first request is that anybody who does feed the cats, you are welcome to carry on, but the request has come to only leave dry food out, such as biscuits or “crunchies”, rather than moist food, such as found in tins or leftovers, as the moist food deteriorates quickly in the sun, attracting other animals and insects and then smelling, as well as being potentially dangerous to the cats if the food becomes infected or bad. Dry food has a longer lifespan, doesn´t deteriorate so quickly, and provides the nutrients needed to these cats and kittens. The councillor did continue to say that “I did myself see a lady feeding the cats from a tin and then throwing the tin in direction of the sea”,

which is also particularly worrying as not only does that cause litter problems, but the cats could try to seek out the smell and potentially injure themselves on the tin, or by falling. In addition to the first control, which is the best course of action for both the cats and neighbours, the town hall will also be starting the spaying and neutering campaign in September, in order to control the further growth of the cat population. In order to do this, the cats will have to be caught, then taken to a vet, on a daily basis, where they will later be returned, although there will also be a campaign to re-home them during this process. Up to 3 cats a time will be caught and taken, over a period of several weeks, at the start of which there will be a campaign launched in the press warning people, because your assistance will also be asked for in achieving this measure. In the time immediately before the traps are set, the town hall will ask that no food is put out at all. The reason for this is that the traps will contain food, which will encourage the cats to enter, before being taken away. “If the cats are not hungry, they will never enter the traps”, the councillor explains, concluding that, “Of course when the traps are taken the remaining cats will be fed”, and that the process is “absolutely necessary” for achieving good results.

The XVII Conference of Theology, Solidarity and Justice in Public Life, is hosted in the Palacio de la Música until 14 August, whereas the fantastic Broadway Musical On Ice comes to the Teatro Municipal, promising to be a spectacle not to be missed. Sticking with a sporty theme, albeit one that everybody can join in, the ever popular Zumba classes on the Orihuela Costa are extended this week, offering more opportunities to get fit in the sun. At the weekend, also on the Orihuela Costa, the IV Padel tournament and workshops will be taking place at the Municipal Sports Centre, which will also be playing host to the III Night Football Competition, as the evening cools down and provides a better climate for the game, with lots of other micro events alongside. The Orihuela Costa also goes for a traditional Andalusian feel this week, as the La Zenia beach Chiringuito hosts a Flamenco night on Wednesday, which most of us know as a traditional Spanish song, dance and hand-clapping spectacle, originating in the Andalusia in southern Spain. The tradition has its roots firmly lodged in the past, first mentioned in literature in 1774, from a combination of Andalusian and Romani music and dance, associated with the Romani people of Spain, the Gitanos, it has grown in popularity ever since, with many a famous flamenco artist now popularizing the tradition. Back to a religious theme, we also have one of the major dates in the calendar this week, the Assumption of Mary, or La Asunción de la Virgen, which is celebrated on Wednesday, when, according to the beliefs of Roman Catholics, Eastern Orthodoxy, Oriental Orthodoxy, and parts of Anglicanism, the body of the Virgin Mary was taken into Heaven at the end of her life on earth. Finally, for our little gem of “must visits”, this week our suggestion is the Santa Bárbara Castle in Alicante, which can be seen on the south side of the city, looking down across the land, on the top of Mount Benacantil. he Santa Barbara Castle is located on the top of Benacantil Mountain, 166 metres above sea level, offering stunning views over the entire bay of Alicante. One of the most bizarre experiences is being higher than some of the planes heading in to land at the nearby airport. Hosting various exhibits, such as the Elements of Torture and Death, showcasing the 3,000 year old The Treasure of Villena, or the more modern PlayMobil toy figures who are giving their own display of the history of Alicante, there is always something to see, even beyond the views.

SECOND CLASS BUS SERVICE FOR ORIHU ELA COSTA The city of Orihuela proudly publishes on the official Town Hall web page that it has excellent public transport services. It boasts that in addition to its train station with its links to the extensive Spanish rail network that it has “a total of 35 transmission lines and five bus operators”. It also states that “public transportation provides an urban space that’s more healthy and of higher quality, reducing the number of vehicles that pass through our streets, improving the quality of the air we breath by reducing emissions from private transport, improving road safety, improving accessibility and finally increasing social integration of many groups that do not have or can not use the car for certain trips.” Clearly these comments are directed at the city of Orihuela and have no relevance for those residents living on the mass of urbanisations that constitute Orihuela Costa. Orihuela Costa has two bus services to serve the 33,227 residents plus the huge influx of holiday makers that flock to their holiday homes during peak season. These two routes each operate an hourly service starting at 7.30 am and terminating at 8.30pm. The Red Line serves the northern part of Orihuela Costa, from the Town Hall to La Florida, west of the N332 to the motorway as boundaries. This route does not incorporate the health centre or the hospital at Torrevieja. It does however go closer to the beach than the blue route, but still fails to deliv-

er passengers to any of the beautiful beaches that are the attraction for the tourists visiting this area. The Blue Line goes from the health centre to Las Filipinas, Villa Martin, then terminating at the Town Hall. This route totally ignores all the beaches. No bus route serves the Cabo Roig peninsula or any of the beaches. There is a day time hourly service between Cartagena and Alicante that mainly follows the N332, this service owes nothing to the administration in Orihuela. In addition there are three buses daily that go from Mil Palmeras to Orihuela, however non of these services would be of use to people working in the city. The council also offers a weekly Tuesday service from the Town Hall at Playa Flamenca to Orihuela Market, but in order to access this service requires a visit to the tourist office or a lengthy phone call. If any of the coastal inhabitants who live on the urbanisations to the west of the N332 have tried to live without the use of the car their mobility and life options would be severely restricted. If anyone has tried to travel from the northerly urbanisations like Lago Sol to the health centre at Cabo Roig / La Regia using public transport they would face a disheartening journey. What never fails to amaze me is that there is a total lack of transport for the vast numbers of summer visitors to access the beaches. No extra services are offered. What is the reason for the vast discrepancy in public transport services between the coast and Orihuela? The Town Hall based in Orihuela

city publicises that transportation facilitates integration of groups of people who have no access to private transport so why isn’t this applicable for the people of Orihuela Costa. ORIHUELA NEWS ROUNDUP ORIHUELA COURSES FOR UNEMPLOYED Orihuela’s Employment Promotion council has announced that a number of courses for unemployed will be taking place during the third quarter of the year. They will be focused in the areas of hospitality, tourism and trade The Councillor for Employment, Manuel Gallud, announced details of the courses stating that his Department had two objectives. First, to develop a training plan for the unemployed people of Orihuela and second, to assist the unemployed through a Local Placement Agency. "These tools are aimed at assisting the unemployed to find work," he said. We have designed a program of training courses for jobseekers focusing on the sectors of hospitality, tourism and trade. During the month of September, the department will develop an English course for the hotel and leisure industry. In October, there will be another course of business showing those actively seeking employment how they can use the Internet and social networks to their benefit. This will be held in the auditorium of La Lonja in Orihuela city. The activity will take place over two days and it will involve a number of guests of agencies and companies that have an active role in the job search market. In addition, there will be round tables and conferences.

Aesthetic work has begun in the La Regia area of the Orihuela Costa, with an aim to improve accessibility by removing existing stairs and obstructions along the pedestrian promenade, in an area that has been the focus of complaints by residents for many years, as it is part of an access route for one of the local school bus services.

The third course will focus on customer service in the tourism sector in the area of Orihuela and will be held in November whilst in December there will be a business management course aimed at teaching sales skills. Gallud said that he will shortly be announcing the registration details.

BOULEVARD SUNDAY OPENING APPROVED The regional government has approved an application from Orihuela town hall for businesses and shops on the Orihuela Costa to be allowed to trade 365 days per year. The councillor for commerce, Manuel Gallus of the Los Verdes, confirmed the decision, which was proposed in May and endorsed by the bipartisan government team, as well as CLR / CLARO group. The plan had met with opposition from some local trade groups, as well as from neighbouring Torrevieja, who saw it as nothing more than a way of boosting business at the Zenia Boulevard, at the expense of trade for local business. During the summer, the shops already have approval as the tourism season legislation takes over, but from the 1st of October opening hours are liberalised throughout the year, in a hope of improving tourism and commerce in Orihuela, who are now able to compete with the Murcia region, where shops are already allowed to open.

The Mayor of Orihuela, Montseratte Guillén, who also holds the post of councillor for safety and security, has announced the installation of speed controls in various locations on the coast, aimed at slowing cars down to the permitted limit, thus protecting more vulnerable road users. A number of astute motorists have already seen the signs warning of radar speed traps, more of which are set to appear in the not too distant future.

An increase in “lookie lookie” men arriving on the Orihuela is being blamed on neighbouring Torrevieja. Having sought to move the problem on, some of the illegal street vendors are now giving more prominence to the Orihuela Costa, which also has a considerably smaller police force than Torrevieja, and so more limited resources to deal with the problem. CLR spokesman, Pedro Mancebo, has filed a complaint and said that the growth of this type of activity, without control over the work they do, is “worrying”, and many of them do not have proper safeguards and are “legally questionable” as to their origin. Together with the Councillor for the Coast, the Councillor of Commerce, Manuel Gallud and the president of the Chamber of Commerce, Felix Cerdan, the three officials visited the Summer Outlet Fair last week held at Zenia Boulevard which was organised to promote retail sales in Orihuela. The outlet fair came about as a result of the cooperation between the City and the shopping centre. It allowed up to 20 Orihuela stores to display their wares, comprising of textile products, accessories, lingerie, leather goods, footwear and home ware at discounted prices. The trio acknowledged the assistance of Zenia Boulevard shopping center in allowing space on their car park to site the outlet saying that they hoped to be able to repeat the experience in the future.

Online travel agency Rumbo, has hit back at claims made by Ryanair that it was them who inflated the prices for victims trying to travel to Santiago de Compostela immediately after the tragic crash that took 79 lives, stating that “neither Rumbo nor any other agency can modify the availability or fares for flights, a decision that can only take the airlines”. The website company continue to explain that its main function is to “mediate between the airlines and the end customer, bringing the latter comparison service that shows all the available seats in the airline market, and that allows this end customer to book the desired flight”. The agency says that they are “deeply sorry” that through the statements made by Ryanair, who are only interested in “intending to discredit the image” of their company, which they consider to be both a “disgrace”, and for which they are “deeply shocked”. Rumbo also recalls that “in recent years they have been characterized by Ryanair who carried out various campaigns to discredit the travel agency”. For that reason, the company notes, they were forced to take legal action to defend their reputation. These efforts culminated last April on a judgment of the Supreme Court authorising Rumbo to sell Ryanair tickets, and dismissed the appeal filed by the airline, declaring with finality the legality of the activity of Rumbo in relation to accessing information and prices of Ryanair flights. The company states that they are “greatly concerned” that their image is has been blackened, after more than 14 years in the sector, which is why they are the number 1 travel agent in terms of sales in Spain. However, the company feels affected by a statement that is “not only false but also clearly from an airline interested in performing continuous attacks on the intermediation travel sector, with Rumbo in particular being targets”.

TWENTY ARCHAEOLOGISTS EXPLORE PREHISTORIC LEGACY The Alicante Archaeology Museum (MARQ) has recently been engaged in excavation work at the Laderas del Castill site in Callosa de Segura. This programme was concluded at the end of last month, revealing part of the ruins which are conserved beneath the residue that covers the pine-forested mountainside where the former village La Bastida de Totana was, the world capital of its time. The campaign was part of a collaboration project between the Alicante Provincial Council and Callosa Town Hall that aims to increase knowledge of the ancient civilisations that populated the area. The work is also a continuation of preliminary explorations and studies carried out last year in this prehistoric part of the province. But first the excavators had to find their way through four thousand years of erosion that occupies the slope of the mountain To achieve this more than 20 graduates and university students worked voluntarily on this project, directed by the archaeologists Juan Antonio López and Francisco Javier Jover. Amongst the tasks carried out, the team opened a new area for excavation and working to clear rubble so as to uncover the walled structures or terraced houses that are thought to exist. If La Bastida de Totana was the world capital 4,000 years ago, the town of Callosa de Segura was the Barcelona of the time. The Bronze Age left its mark on the town but you have to dig to find the last of what was then the largest city of Vega Baja.

The museum has put its focus on the site of Callosa, of which records show that it has not been excavated since 1925. At the time the landscape provided everything needed by Bronze man: underground water sources, arable land along the Segura and a rock formation that represented a natural defensive fortification to overlook all outposts approaching from the coast. The dimensions and importance of this settlement must have made it one of the most significant centres of population in the Segura River Basin at the time. The archaeology museums of Alicante and Cataluña currently keep numerous bronze items, ceramic containers, bone utensils and adornments, ivory and mother of pearl, as well as different mills, hammers and

other stone tools from the excavations carried out in the area at the beginning of the 20th century. To them will be added the collection kept at the Callosa Municipal Archaeology museum, which recently moved to new premises. A spokesman for the Department of Culture said that it is expected that this excavation will offer a major boost by the provision of more elements to the Municipal Archaeological Museum as well as heritage value which will promote tourism. The area councilor, Almudena Guilló, noted that "We intend to continue with these excavations for the next few years because this is the site is one of the most important Bronze Age locations found across the Vega Baja

NEW ALICANTE TO ZARAGOZA TRAIN LAUNCHED Hot on the heels of the success of the Alicante to Madrid high speed train, now running at an average of 87% capacity, even with the additional services provided, Spanish train operator RENFE has announced another new route to serve the Costa Blanca. From the 28th of July, RENFE has been running a new service between Alicante and Zaragoza, linking the 500 kilometre distance in an average journey time of just 4 hours. Tickets are available on the website, www.renfe.com, and from ticket offices providing for sales of high speed train, AVE, services. Zaragoza is in the autonomous community of Aragon, situated on the Ebro river, in a valley with a variety of landscapes, ranging from desert (Los Monegros) to thick forest, meadows and mountains. The city is famous for its folklore, local gastronomy, and landmarks such as the Basílica del Pilar, La Seo Cathedral and the Aljafería Palace. Several buildings form part of the Mudéjar Architecture of Aragon, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The down side is that the service will start with just one high speed train in each direction per day, with passengers from Alicante having to spend a night in Zaragoza in order to return the next morning, but a night out in this historic city is well worth adding to the list of places to visit in Spain.

SPAIN FINDS BUYER FOR RETIRED MIRAGE PLANES Following the decommission of the Mirage F-1M from the Los Llanos Air Base in Albacete in June, it now looks like the Spanish government may have found somebody to take these retired aircraft from them.

The Argentinean ministry of defence has confirmed that they are in talks with their Spanish counterparts with a view to transferring the ownership of the aircraft to the Argentine air force. The decommissioned planes were modernised in the 1990´s and are a fleet of 51 single seat fighters and 4 two seat trainers, with modern navigation and weapons system, although not quite modern enough to satisfy the needs considered vital to the Spanish, with their laser guided missiles and high precision autonomous navigation systems, using integrated GPS, which provide information to a mission computer which allows the plane to reach their targets in the optimum time. The Argentinean minister said, “We are working with the Government of Spain, in an important possibility to consider the Mirage for fulfilling an important role”. The aircraft in Spain has been replaced by the Eurofighter, which is also one of the programs to benefit from around half of the recent 877 million euro injection of additional funding from the Spanish government.

FIRE FIGHTER INJURED IN HELICOPTER CRASH The CCOO union is calling for an urgent investigation into the cause of a helicopter crash in which a fire fighter was slightly injured, following the crash as the aircraft was participating in forest fire fighting. The accident occurred last weekend when the helicopter, which was stationed at the Alcántara airfield in Valencia, was participating in the efforts to extinguish a fire in the vicinity of the town of Pallares, Badajoz. Although the union are wishing their colleague a speedy recovery, they say in a press release, that “it is not the first time we have to regret an accident of this nature”, as well as commenting on the fact

that in this type of work, where risk is present at all times, “the health and safety of those involved must be inescapable”. Lack of information, training and adequate provision of personal protective equipment, together with the establishment of suitable breaks, enable the likelihood of accidents, they say. The Spanish accident investigators will be conducting an investigation, but the findings of that report will be purely technical, and is not intended to determine or establish fault or liability of any kind. The results of their research, which aims to prevent future accidents, are collected in a report describing how it happened, the same analysis and conclusions as well as recommendations on security.

Tell your visitors to get a health card and travel insurance As British expatriates in Spain prepare for their annual influx of summer visitors, the British Embassy is urging people who are expecting friends and family to remind them to bring an often-forgotten essential – a European Health Insurance Card. “If you’re having family or friends to stay this summer, they’ll be asking you what they need to bring. Item number one on their checklist should be the European Health Insurance Card - also known as an EHIC” says a British Embassy spokesman. “This simple piece of plastic entitles the holder to all medically-necessary treatment during a temporary stay in Spain. It’s easy to get – check out www.ehic.org.uk - and it costs nothing. “Although most people’s trips are trouble-free, things can go wrong. An EHIC will provide peace of mind in case someone needs to see the doctor. It’ll help to ensure they don’t take home a big hospital bill should they need medical care.” Comprehensive travel insurance is the second vital item on a visitor’s packing list. It covers all the extras that an EHIC doesn’t provide, such as repatriation in the case of medical emergency. If a visiting friend or family member is taken into hospital, an EHIC is enough to cover someone until they are well enough to travel home. If someone who is taking out travel insurance has a pre-existing medical condition, then do remind them to declare it. If they don’t, the insurer may well invalidate their policy. “You won’t fool them but they may make a fool of you”, says an Embassy spokesman. Every year consular staff in Spain are asked to assist hundreds of Britons who have failed to take out travel insurance or who have invalidated their policies, and who have ended up facing huge bills when attending a private clinic or hospital. However, visitors to Spain should be aware that they do not have to provide travel insurance as payment for medically necessary treatment in a public or state healthcare facility. They should insist that their EHIC is accepted. Anyone asked to sign a form or disclaimer in a state hospital should check that they are not forfeiting the right to be treated under an EHIC. If someone’s EHIC is refused or for other concerns about using an EHIC whilst in Spain, call the Department of Health team at the British Consulate on 902 109 356. A visitor who needs to see a doctor and doesn’t have an EHIC with them can also get a Provisional Replacement Certificate from the Overseas Healthcare Team in Newcastle, on +44 191 218 1999. THE FILLIES AND NAGS SHOW Easy Horse Care's La Zenia charity shop held their Summer Fashion Show at Alfie's Place in La Zenia on July 25th. Over 80 people attended and were treated to some of the latest fashions courtesy of Looking Good Boutique who are great supporters of EHCRC. The models were all volunteers from the shop and they were joined on the catwalk by Vicky Feest the La Zenia shop manager. “I want to thank all my girls for their help today said Vicky. They have been most professional and fantastic sports.” This is more than can be said for fashion icons Gok and Wok who gave fashion tips to the audience. “Thank goodness nobody took any notice of them” said Vicky who confirmed it is only a rumour that one of the pair was actually her husband!! The afternoon was a great success raising over 400 Euro's on the day for the EHCRC charity. Everyone involved cannot wait for the next show to be booked. Vicky was especially grateful to Alfie for his support in again opening his doors for the charity function. “He even provided a red carpet for the girls to walk down” she added. The EHCRC are now planning their next event at Alfies for the middle of October, the date is to be confirmed. This will be a

‘TAKING THE FINAL BOW’ Despite never having been on the stage, David Farrer (Treasurer of the Gilbert & Sullivan Society), took the final bow on their behalf when presenting the remaining funds of 240€ to AFA, the Alzheimer’s charity in Torrevieja. With dwindling membership and funds the society decided to close after their last show in May of this year. Matilde Sanchez (President of AFA) pictured on the left expressed the charities sincere thanks for their support during recent years and was sad to hear of the societies demise. Some of the members and their friends still meet socially under the umbrella of GASPS (Gilbert & Sullivan Preservation society). STAGESTRUCK! CLAIM A COSTA BLANCA FIRST To facilitate our next production Jack and The Beanstalk, which takes place in late November, Stagestruck advertised widely for new members who could act, sing or dance. One of our members, Blanca Sierra brought along both her mother and her daughter to the auditions and both passed with flying colours. We think this is the first time for any theatrical company in Costa Blanca to have three generations of one family performing in the same show. All three have leading roles. Rita has the part of the Good Fairy, while Bianca and her daughter Sofia play Jack and Princess respectively. We also welcome Anne,Ingrid,John .Judith, Julie, Katy and Ted to our team. Rehearsals have started in earnest for the show which takes place on Friday 29th and Saturday 30th November at 8pm and as a departure for us we are having a matinee performance on Sunday August 1st at 3pm.This production will be at The Cardinal Belluga Theatre in San Fulgencio Tickets will be on sale shortly but to book in advance ring Stella on her new number which is 965 076 700.

Q U I C K G U I D E T O ‘ W H AT ’ S O N ’ In our brief look at TV for this week, we see Channel 5 going for an animal outlook, firstly with Animal Maternity, a new series offering a unique insight into the world of animal birth. Exactly how the animal kingdom deals with motherhood and the help it sometimes needs from humans will be brought to the small screen thanks to unique access to a range of Britain’s zoos, safari parks and animal sanctuaries. Meanwhile, Animal Clinic will be returning for a second series, to be fronted by presenter and adventurer Ben Fogle. The show will continue its unique insight into the work of the University of Liverpool’s Vet School, one of the world’s leading veterinary institutions. Channel 4 announced the commission of a trio of shows, airing in September, that sheds light on three British businesses doing well despite the recession or are flourishing on the back of tough times. The Pawn Shop, The Man Who Will Buy Anything and Scrappers are the working titles of the programs that all deal with the trade of buying and selling. Following the long-running success of BBC Two’s living history series, Victorian, Edwardian and Wartime Farm, this autumn BBC Two takes up residence in the stunning medieval landscape of Weald and Downland Open Air Museum in Chichester to explore life on a Tudor Abbey Farm, complete with the greatest variety of 15th and 16th century buildings in the country.

The BBC announced three brand-new commissions - Digby Jones' New Industrial Revolution; No Country For Young Men; and Junior Paramedics, as well as a second series of The Planners (now known as Not In My Back Yard). On ITV, Ben Fogle turns up there too, along with Liz Bonnin and Paul Heiney lacing up their boots as they get Countrywise, returning with a new presenting team for a brand-new series, exploring the best of Britain’s coast and country this September. Cameras will follow Tom and his best friend Sophie as they kiss their families goodbye, pack their bags and head for the wilds of some of the most incredible countries on earth such as Thailand, Japan, Australia, Morocco and New Zealand, and excitement is starting as previews of the next series of Vera are starting to emerge, with Brenda Blethyn reprising her lead role as Detective Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope.

SUMMER CUP 2013 Golf Society – Captain/Secretary Challenge FONT del LLOP GOLF RESORT - 2nd AUGUST 2013 On a very hot and humid day the Summer Cup was contested for the fourth year at the Font del Llop Golf Resort, this is a competition between Golf Society Captains and Secretaries from the Costa Blanca and Costa Calida, organised by the Vega Baja Premier Golf League and supported by Font del Llop Golf Resort. The competition is now the oldest held at Font del Llop The competition was contested by 40 teams 80 players, using combined Stableford points, but the one main obstacle to overcome on the day would be the 35 degree heat and the fear of dehydration. All the teams set off with a Shotgun Start to ensure that the teams returned to the clubhouse at the similar time in readiness for the “menu del dia”, and where also provided with a picnic and water half way through the competition. As part of the tournament there were five Nearest the Pins and two Longest Drives one for men and Ladies, all sponsored by ClubstoHire.com the Longest Drive separately for both Men and Ladies were sponsored by MURCIA525GOLF Montogo G S were defending the trophy having with the same players as last year, John Day and John Feek but sadly this year fell short, but I am sure they will be back next year to wipe this challenge from their memory. The weather was superb and the course in excellent condition and we played a BOGEY competition which was a new concept to many of the players, although judging by the scores we should play this event more often. TMGS REPORT - SAURINES DE LA TORRE

This was our first venture to Saurines although one or two had played it before. It has to be said that the fairways and the greens were in an excellent condition and the Caddy Master had the attitude of “no matter what, I am here to serve you” which is, in itself, a diminishing attitude of some courses in the area. The main area of concern seemed to be the “lost ball” syndrome where if you strayed left or right, you were in an area of desert sand (not really sand, more gravel and fescue bushes). We might, in the future, introduce a local rule where the ball “isn’t lost, but unplayable”…which could and should increase the pace of play. Many enjoyed the challenge, a few didn’t and the scores were a reflection on just how tough this course can be. The Silver Division, like the Gold suffered and it only took m27 points for John Hillier to claim 4th spot. 28 points was enough for Mick Kennedy and

Alan Rickers to claim 3rd and 2nd…and this left Roger Nilsen to win that Division with 30 points. The Gold lot didn’t do much better and 29 points (countback employed) wasn’t enough for Vernon Brown to edge out John Eyre for 4th and 3rd. Alan Rixson took the runners-up slot with 32 points and this left James Hunter with an excellent 40 points to take the honours of the day. SMGS AT VILLAMARTIN

San Miguel Golf Society’s monthly visit to Villamartin, one of our most popular venues, is always well supported but as is usual in the searing August temperatures, quite a few regulars don’t brave the midday heat. From a personal point of view after a run of fairly good performances, lying in a shady spot beside a few chilled beers does sound a far more constructive way of killing a few hours…..Still, it was me who chose to duff the odd shot as well as missing a bagful of putts resulting in getting even hotter and more bothered over this most frustrating of pastimes. Makes you seriously consider taking up linedancing or even knitting! That reminds me…..Paddy and Mick came dashing out of the local zoo covered in scratches and their clothes in tatters with Paddy shouting, “Well Mick, I don’t know about you but that’s the first and last time I’m goin’ lion-dancing!” Anyway, I couldn’t lay any blame on the course which, in fact, was a tad shorter than normal as someone had been sensible enough to move the

You cannot have every thing the breeze did send a few balls in the wrong direction. We played full handicap stableford with the usual two’s pot and four n/t/p’. Our guest on the day, Thomas Foley playing off, 11 won the day with a great score of 43 pt.'s Best member Nigel Cawthra playing off 14 came in with another great score of 40 pt.'s which pleased the handicap secretary, Member Jack Todd most improved player this season so far, came in with 39pt’s.We returned back to Gogarty’s for the presentations made by President Mo Flint. By Barry Grinsell Friday August 2nd August saw 22 of us heading north up the AP-7 to play at Bonalba , I have to say that the course was in excellent condition , fairways very good and the greens tip top making the course a good test of golf , the best our society could do was for two players only managing to score a one over par 35 stable ford points . Our first tee time was 11:00 so by 12:00 we had all 22 players on the course , what came to mind was the old song ‘ Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun ‘ ( Although we were not all English but the words still meant the same thing .) The results for the day were in third place Steve Edwards with 33 points , their was a tie for first place with two players having 35 points but by means of a better back nine our winner was Colin Edwards with Alan Gifford taking second place these three members all received cash prizes, our N T Ps were on the 4th hole Keith Smith the 8th hole Mark Ead and the 11th and 14th holes Alan Gifford all receiving a sleeve of 3 Callaway golf balls for each N T P , our best guest was Brian Smith taking home white and rose wines , the Mini Golf Bar in Quesada donated a prize for our lowest card which guest T Ackroyd took home , finally the football card was won by Paul Cogan . After the game we all returned back to the Mini Golf Bar for a couple of beers and snacks that were provided by the bar .

LO CRISPIN GOLF SOCIETY Alicante Golf Club - 07.08.13 Mad dogs and Englishmen (and Scotsmen) come to mind, 38 degrees and 70% humidity why in the world would you want to go out and try to hit a little ball around? Indeed, 35 of us did just that some better than others, but the heat did take its toll. Seve's course at Alicante was its usual green self, in good condition with plenty of grass on the fairways although the greens were rather slow. As we plotted our way round some of us would much rather have been in the swimming pools which were dotted around the course than playing golf. The ones that got the job done were: The winner of the Summer Cup was Mike Johnson with a magnificent 38 points 2nd Andy Ayres 36pts 3rd Tom Johnson 32pts Best Guest Mark Norton with 27pts NTPs: Richard Norton hole 3, Martin Collins hole 6, Stan Earl hole 12 and Mick Johnson hole 17. There were two 2s, Mike Johnson and Mark Norton each winning 50€ each The free game draw was claimed by Stan Earl. After a hot day it was nice to go to the Lo Crispin Tavern in the evening with friends and guests for a cool drink and for the presentation followed by a BBQ provided by Jose, David and staff at the Tavern. TORREGOLF.EU AT LAS COLINAS Yes Friday 3rd, saw us returning for the 1st. time in probably 2 years, to this lovely course and we were served a treat even with the fairways still showing some of the recent maintenance. The course has now been added to one of regular playing courses. With tee times starting at 08.40 on both the 1st. and 10th was a good idea as it meant we were all going to finish earlier than normal and get into the bar and quench our throats with some cool beer after a very hot round. As it was a first visit for many of our members it was anticipated that scores would be fairly low and that’s how it worked out with only 9 members breaking the 30 points. HAPPY DAYS CATRAL GOLF SOCIETY I am very sorry to report this week the sudden loss of one of our members, Barry Shearman, after a short illness. Our best wishes go to his wife and family. This Tuesday we played at Alenda. The course was in superb condition and a pleasure to play with fairways and greens in excellent condition. It was great to see Ron Dowd playing golf again,well done . We played our usual stapleford format and the heat and humidity did not stop some very good scores coming in. Handicap secretary take note. GREENLANDS BOWLS CLUB By Steve Hibberd Another league came to a conclusion last week, this time it was the SABA mens pairs league div 1. After a slow start, we finished just 4 points behind champions Vistabella, and bizarrely won every away fixture, whilst not winning a single match at home. Last weeks rearranged match against Quesada resulted in a 2-3 defeat, although the pairing of Phil Lockley and Steve Hibberd did win away (20-12). The summer SABA knockout competition is close to reaching the final stages. With interest still in the mens, ladies and mixed pairs, plus the mixed trips, these next couple of weeks should hopefully produce some success for GBC. Greenlands was the venue for the latest in the Quesada friendlies saga. Victory for the home team on 6 of the 7 rinks used, and an overall shots advantage of 20, meant that the running shots total now stands at 153. Nadine Bater, Margaret Dewar & Texas Ted were the nights biggest winners. In a fortnights time, Greenlands will be hosting the series final match, where a buffet costing 5 euros will be available. Anyone wishing to be included in this event, should add their name to the list at the club.

Now that the water is being managed by the four clubs the pegs are now all cleared and fishable. Winner on the day was Geoff Tempest with 4.12kg,in second place Pete Kerr with 2.28kg, third Graham Leadley with 2.24kg and in fourth place John Brightling with 2.06kg. This means that John, Dave and Eddie go through to the runners up match on August 22nd, and Geoff, Graham and Pete join the 3 winners of the previous round, to fish the final on 29th August. QUESADA PROVIDE STIFF TEST FOR NATIONAL SQUAD

WILLIAM (BILL) TUCKFIELD June 14th 1938 ~ August 4th 2013 Bill was a very well liked and respected member of Montemar Bowls and Social Club, always the gentleman he never had a bad word to say about anyone. Maggie, his partner of the past seven years and all his family, especially his daughters Penny and Sarah and his grandchildren Finn, Flora and Wilmina will sadly miss him. Bill retired as the owner of a printing business in South East London. He was also an accomplished snooker player, often scoring breaks of 100 or more and known to his teammates as the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ice Manâ&#x20AC;? as he was so cool and calculated during his play.

SUE RAINBOW This week has seen El Rancho Bowls Club say a fond farewell to our dear friend Sue Rainbow, who passed away last Sunday. Sue was an avid bowler of no mean skill and enthusiasm; she worked hard for the club in arranging social functions including the regular quiz night with her devoted husband Jim. Being around Sue was always good for the spirit, there was always an observation, in her dry style of humour to make you chuckle. She was a good friend to many and will be sorely missed.

Quesada entertained the Spanish International Squad on Sunday, and what a wonderful day we all had. Following a strongly fought game, playing against the squad with many of our international players on the opposing side, we won the match by 2 points and 2 shots, This was a run out for Spain's Team for the European championships and they did not disappoint. Playing sets play against a mixed four from the club, the Team won both sets. On Wednesday our Federated Lions squad travelled to Monte Mar for the North v South final of the Costa Blanca King's Cup against Javea Green. This was a great day for the Lions taking the match 6-4. The standard of play on the day was excellent and the atmosphere was terrific with many spectators and supporters. Deidre Leeming and Nigel

Baigent both had very tight games in the singles, against Jo Morris and Alan Phillips, with Javea taking the points, which meant that our other three teams had to win. Jason Prokopowycz and Derek Sale won 239 against David Gardner and Clive English, with the four of William Holtham, Pearl Houghton, Chip Chapman and Pete Bonsor winning 18-9 against a team skipped by Sheri Fletcher, all was down to the Triples of John Muldoon, Derek Toozer and Bill Pain to bring home the glory and they did not disappoint, winning 16-11 against Brian Manser's trio. Mention must be made of our reserves on the day, Nick Birch and Veronica Sale. Thanks must go to the Quesada supporters for their encouragement throughout the game. The Lions were presented with their trophies by Valencian Delgado, Bob Donnelly.

EURO SPRUCE UP FOR EMERALD ISLE

The Emerald Isle Bowls Club is hard at work getting the club ready for the European Bowls Team Championships which will be played at the venue at the end of September. The club are co-hosts of the championships and are sprucing up all of the public areas at the club to make it look absolutely fantastic for this prestigious tournament. All of the club facilities have now been painted and updated to make the visiting clubs welcome and comfortable. The Emerald Isle is now also building a beautiful view-

ing area for the VIP guests which will have fantastic views of all 8 rinks. Elsewhere, staging will be installed to create a fully covered spectator area so that competitors and spectators can sit in comfort in the shade to enjoy the championships. The Emerald Isle Bowls Club are proud to be the 2013 co-host of the European Championships and plan to keep on making improvements right up to the deadline , to create a magnificent venue for this event.

With another 2 friendlies under his belt, Torry manager Carmona must have a pretty good idea of not only his starting 11 for the league opener, but also which positions still need strengthening. At home to Murcian div 3 side UCAM Murcia, Torry had a nightmare of a start, when Burguillos watched in horror as his attempted goal line clearance trickled over the line, giving the visitors a head start after only 2 mins. It could have got worse 10 mins later, but keeper Carrion came to his sides rescue when he superbly tipped a goal bound header over for a corner. The Almoradi old boys combination came up trumps again, this time it was Eric who delivered the pass for Pastor to stab home the equalizer. Second half sub Carrasco wasted no time in making his presence felt, when his quickly taken free kick was converted by Javi. Torry looked to be heading towards a first win under Carmona, but in

the 3rd min of stoppage time, a corner found an unmarked striker who gratefully placed his shot into an open net. It was certainly a good work out, against a well organised side who included ex Torry players Dani and Cristian Munoz. Carmona returned to Almoradi, who last season heartbreakingly lost in the Preferente div play off final, before agreeing to take over the hot seat at near neighbours FC Torrevieja, for the latest warm up match last Sat. The game started slowly, but midway through the 1st half, Eric should twice in as many minutes have scored, when put through on goal with only the keeper to beat. Having said that, ex Torry keeper Tur played well throughout the opening 45 mins, producing many of his trademark punches to deny a Torry breakthrough. Torry were punished for wasteful finishing, when on 41 mins, a long range free kick was firmly headed home by the gangly Almoradi no 10. Early in the 2nd half, Torry were given a lifeline when sub Pastor was unceremoniously brought down inside the box. Up stepped that man Carrasco, to dispatch the resultant penalty with aplomb. Both sides could easily have added a winner, but a combination of poor finishing and good defending prevented this happening. Pastor had an effort well saved, sub keeper Carrion performed well between the sticks, and Eric spurned another 2 glorious opportunities, but it was left to Almoradi to have the final say, when a long range rocket shot struck the post before rebounding to safety. On Weds 14 Aug, ko 7pm, Torry welcome CD Cox to Nelson Mandela Stadium, then on Sat 17 Aug, prov 7pm ko, Thader (Rojales) play host for the last friendly before the new season opening fixture against La Nucia.

The last pre-season friendly for Elche before the real thing next weekend ended in a poor result, a 1 – 0 win from a penalty by last season’s top scorer Coro. The Illicitanos dominated the match and had numerous opportunities to score against a team now two leagues and a chasm of class between them. The game was played at Pinater in a good spirit in front of only 3,000 fans, hopefully many more will be at the Martinez Valero in two weeks’ time when Elche begin their home campaign against mighty Real Sociedad, although the Franjiverdes first match back in La Liga after 24 years is away at Rayo Vallecano in Madrid on Monday 19th August. In the first half Coro had a volley saved from a Fidel cross, with new striker Manu del Moral hitting a cross shot wide. Murcia had little to offer but Saul did manage two efforts, the second pushed over by the relatively-untroubled Manu Herrera in Elche’s goal. The usual substitutes came on and off as Elche coach Fran Escriba gave as many players a run out as possible, and seemed to succeed although against poor opposition more goals should have been scored to give the team confidence. With a spate of internationals this week just before the big kick-off this seems a crazy time for football, and directly affects Elche. The Franjiverdes have managed to secure the services of the Columbian midfielder Carlos Sanchez for three seasons, but he has been summoned back to play in a game for his country against Serbia in midweek, fortunately in Barcelona and will hopefully return to play against Rayo. This same situation occurs with Elche’s new midfielder the Bosnian Miroslav Stevanovic who is

also required to play for his country against the United States in Sarajevo. On the good news front Elche have signed the international Panamanian midfielder Jairo Jimenez from Chorillo and who has played seven times for his country. Elche are still pursuing the big Ghanian striker Richard Boakye who is currently at Juventus but interested in playing in Spain’s La Liga. He has just returned from the Italian club’s US tour and is looking to make his decisions this week, hopefully in time for the new season. The direction of Elche’s Dutch striker Bery Powel, who is on the transfer list is unclear, though interest has been shown by Deportivo, Girona and Murcia. So the first team situation at Elche is far from settled with only a week to go until the first match: but transfers and signing new players is a complicated affair today. The on-off transfer situations of both top UK and Spanish clubs are far from conclusive and with the first matches next weekend there can be few clubs who know their exact starting line-ups. Elche are a particular example, but no different to Real Madrid (Gareth Bale?), Manchester United (Wayne Rooney, Cesc Fabregas?) and of course the farcical Liverpool and Luis Suarez situation. Are Elche’s early opponents in La Liga as unsettled? Hopefully the Illicitanos have shaken off their unpleasant habit of several years ago where they lost their first half-dozen matches, were rock-bottom of the league, fired their manager and had to play catch up all season: not good...Elche coach Fran Escriba has shown his considerable abilities in getting the Franjiverdes back up to La Liga at last. Let’s hope this season he can now manage the unbelievably difficult job of keeping them there, a hugely formidable task in itself – but it can be done! Mucho Elche!

LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY 9 August by Doug Wright. Another hot one this week with some very tired old golfers by the end of our rounds. We started off on Monday with a Stableford Joker with one hole on each nine counting for double points. There was some good scoring with Mick Brentnall winning with 45 pts. In second & third, both with 40 pts, were Lindsay Forbes & Norman Page. On Wednesday we played a Singles Stableford in which 4 players broke par. Round of the day came from Brian "Smoggy" Townend with an excellent 39 pts. The full results were: Cat1. 1. Peter Dunn 38 pts, 2. Lindsay Forbes 36 pts(c/b), 3. Phil Herrington 36 pts.

On Friday only 15 turned up and we played a Mulligan which at least give us a chance to replay some of the tired shots caused by the heat. The winner with a very good score of 45 pts. was Allen McClusky. Runner up with 42 pts. was Rod Doel. Finally this week I would like to take the opportunity to wish Dave Pulling(ex captain) & his wife Barbara congratulations from all of us in the Society on the occasion of their 50th Wedding Anniversary.
