ORIHU ELA GOES MEDIEVAL

The historic city of Orihuela once again took a trip back in time this weekend, as the fifteenth Medieval Market was held from Friday through to Sunday. With the theme this year being the market of “senses” there was plenty to tantalise the eye, tastes, smell and more, with a varied and complete entertainment program provided by the company Espectáculos & Producciones AMB, at a cost of 30,000 euro. The event had been brought forward this year to try to avoid bad weather, as has often caused problems in the

past, according to the councillor for festivities, Carolina Gracia, unable to foresee that a weather warning was put in place for high winds. In fact it was because of the high winds that the event didn´t start quite as planned. As the crowds gathered at the entrance to the town hall, entertained by a girl with a hula-hoop and a juggler, a disappointment to many who had experienced the dramatic theatrical opening of last year, when performers put on an incredibly well acted scene. It was 45 minutes later before anybody took the effort to announce that because of the weather warnings in place the inaugural address would be postponed. Continued on Page 2

FROM PAGE ONE By that time many of those waiting had already left, as had the councillor for festivities herself, seen leaving the town hall well before the announcement. It was later revealed in a press release that the wind had caused considerable damage overnight, and that four palm trees and two lampposts had been blown over. Local schools had been told to suspend outdoor activities and the emergency services were on alert. In addition, some thirty stalls from the Medieval Market had to be dismantled, after suffering some sort of damage from the gusts. “Last night, the whole market was in place, but in the morning there had been very strong gusts. Some 25 or 30 positions had been damaged”, Gracia said, whilst commenting that the emergency services are monitoring the situation closely. Gracia also later explained that was the reason for postponing the inauguration, but that the event would continue and there was no risk to the public. Once the initial problems had been overcome the event continued as in previous years, albeit a little windy still, but failing to dampen the spirits of those involved or just visiting. The entertainment laid on was as varied as ever throughout the entire weekend, with music and dance and numerous parades, knights on horseback, belly dancers and even a variety of animals, all adding that extra magical charm to the hundreds of thousands who attended to take in the unique atmosphere that only a city so rich in history like Orihuela can convey. The final figures are still being calculated but as the event was no quieter than previous years, it is likely to be in the region of around 200,000 people. Although the event cost 30,000 euro from the public purse, this was a considerable saving from the 42,000 euro last year, but represented even more value for money given the spectacular that was presented, so much so that there was no evidence of cost cutting to those attending the event, just a wonderful and magical weekend that really did bring all the senses to life.

GAS PRICES EXPECTED TO FALL IN APRIL

After months of being fixed at the maximum rate, the Price of a bottle of butane gas is likely to finally decrease, after winter. In view of a fall in wholesale prices, industry experts now predict a fall of 5% in April, which would result in a canister of gas costing 16.60 euro, as opposed to the current price of 17.50. Not only that, if the trend continues, it is expected that the price may well fall by 20% by the time we reach next winter, falling throughout the year to around 15 euro in the summer and then reaching 14 euro at the end of the year. This is in view of the new quarterly review mechanism that was put in place by the government, hence the reason why the savings take longer to pass to the consumer. There is also a considerable deficit which the government are trying to recover on behalf of the industry, a debt which we, the consumers, have to stand. In early 2014 the tariff deficit was around 60 million euro, but since the wholesale prices fell in October, we have been continuing to pay

the higher price since then, and so by March or April this year the tariff deficit will have reached zero and the Ministry of Industry will be able to revise the final price downwards for us too. The maximum price was frozen at 17.50 until 2016, in order to allow time for more stability, although there was also a built in review for 2015. The potential risk to the consumer now is that because of falling demand in gas, partly due to warmer weather, partly due to an increase in piped gas, and partly due to the fact many people simply can´t afford to buy it at the higher price, the industry are now suffering the loss caused by the reduction in demand and are not likely to take that drop lightly. According to the data from the gas companies, the demand for butane closed 2014 with a fall of 7.5%, or 70,000 tonnes. With the continual fall in wholesale prices expected, the gas industry may well appeal to the government to allow the prices to remain high, as they do not want to be the ones who lose out at our expense.

CERVANTES CASKET FOUND Experts searching for the remains of Miguel de Cervantes said that they found wooden fragments of a casket bearing the initials "M.C." with bones in and around them in a crypt underneath the chapel of a cloistered convent in Madrid. Archeologists made the find during excavations to solve the centuries-old mystery of where the famed Spanish writer was laid to rest. Aanthropologist Francisco Etxeberria will now start examining the bones. Cervantes was 69 when he died and investigators have solid clues to work with as they conduct their probe.

TORREVIEJA YOUTH CENTRE HAD BUSY YEAR

Torrevieja´s water supply company AGAMED launched an environmentally friendly campaign in which they have pledged to plant a tree for every one of their customers who switches from a paper bill to the electronic equivalent. So far, more than 6,000 trees have been planted in the Lagunas de la Mata and Torrevieja, with many more hoped to be added this year. On Saturday of this week, in conjunction with the Rotary Club, around 3,000 trees were planted in the area in a day to mark the next stage of repopulation, with lunch also provided to those who took part. Subscribing to a paper-free bill is relatively easy for those on the internet, and you receive a monthly notification by email when your bill is ready at the virtual office. You can get more information on the website, agamed.es, or by visiting one of their offices. The youth information service centre in Torrevieja, the Centro de Información y Animación Juvenil or CIAJ, provided an average of 61 consultations every day last year, dealing with 15,453 attendees. The information has been released by the councilor for youth services in the municipality, Rosario Martínez Chazarra, who also detailed how 60% of all enquiries were dealt with on a face to face basis, 22% were by telephone and the remaining 18% through other communication means such as social networks. Although the centre is specifically aimed at young residents of Torrevieja, of which the city ended 2014 with a total of 30,304 registered residents between 14 and 35 years, representing 28.84 % of

the total population, some 30% of the enquiries handled came from elder members of the family asking about different resources and facilities for young people. Out of the total enquiries dealt with, the majority, some 40%, related to leisure and recreational services, whereas 30% were in connection with employment, 20% regarding education, scholarships and grants and 10% were about Europe, volunteering and housing, amongst others. The centre also arranges a calendar of events around the year and in 2014 had a total of 7,383 young people participating in the 60 activities organized last year.

REPAIRS APPROVED FOR ROJALES WINDMILL Rojales council has set aside a budget of 4,000 euro for repairs to the historic windmill in the town. The windmill was built in the eighteenth century and is covers three floors, the ground, first and second level, and has suffered damage recently caused mostly by the weather. Now, the company Carpintería Navarro Butrón will commence the repairs over three stages, the first being the repair to the four blades of the windmill, replacing wood that is too badly damaged to save and repairing some of the historic elements, both of which will then be treated to prevent further damage. Although the mechanical elements of the installation are thought to be complete, the possibility of the windmill functioning has been ruled out, but it is hoped that the repair will mean that this historic hilltop landmark will be renewed enough to maintain its position as a beacon of the historic past of the area.

NEW SPORTS HOSTEL FOR HORADADA

The Municipal Sports Hostel located in the Pilar de la Horadada Deportivo now has accommodation and facilities for up to 50 athletes. It will be used for sports clubs and associations that visit and compete the town on a regular basis. Construction of the facility, which has an infrastructure of 403 square meters, first got underway in 2010. Although it was put on hold from time to time the council were recently able to provide the balance of funding and material enabling its recent completion. The mayor, José Fidel Ros, said that the hostel is now ready to welcome 48 athletes, while also providing space for coaches and trainers and a relaxing lounge, all surrounding a central circular open courtyard that provides natural light throughout the building.

He said that the centre is a great step forward for the development of sport in the town which now has some of the finest facilities in the region. The Municipal Deportivo has become a benchmark in the community. Its facilities, tennis and padel courts and its pitches, are second to none and as a better standard athlete is attracted to the town so will the quality of our future local stars begin to improve. Alejandro Martinez, a resident of Pilar de la Horadada, was the architect responsible for the building and he was on hand last Wednesday morning to accept the congratulations of the Mayor, the Councilor for Sport as well as many members of the sports community. The Sports Councillor, Adrián López, said that the center will be used for the first time on 28 February with la KDD del Torres, and it is also expected to be used during the Half Marathon on 26 April.

MORE THAN 30 KM. OF CYCLE PA THS ENJOYED BY PIL AR

Travelling around the municipality Pilareño on two wheels is now much easier thanks to the new network of cycling routes in and around the town which now boasts a network of over 30km. They connect the center of the municipality with Cañada de Praes, Mil Palmeras, Torre de la Horadada and el Mojón making all easily available to lovers of cycling through bicycle lanes, cyclestreets and trails. The grand opening of the routes was carried out by an tour around the area involving more than 250 cyclists. There were also a number of skaters from Murcia who joined the fun and sports day travel around the four routes that are currently fully operational, “Senda del Mar”, “Pilar de la Horadada”,

“Costa” and “Vía Parque N-332”. The mayor, José Fidel Ros, said that this is an investment that connects the town with villages around the entire municipality, offering all members of the community the opportunity of using bikes more safely, providing them with additional sustainable and healthy options. The Councillor for Tourism, Eva Martinez, addressed participants explaining the route to them through the main tourist attractions including the Watchtower, Roman quarries, the archeological museum and the church. The morning was designed for all ages and physical abilities, using a combination of sport, culture and tourism in making it a real family atmosphere.

THE WIND OF POLITICAL CHANGE This weekend saw the wind of political change strike a blow to the traditional groups, as the streets were filled with people set to take back the ownership of their country, under the banner “La Marcha del Cambio”, where the relatively new political force for change, Podemos, led their followers with a wave of indignation of the problems caused by years of poor political leads. That change is now filtering down through every level of the political system, right from the very top, and finding firm roots in local politics too. To that end, we caught up with the new leading figure for change in Orihuela, Julio A. Vicente Mateo, who has explained why the next elections are the most important ones for both the country and the local residents alike, and what part he, his group and Podemos aim to play. Will Podemos be contesting both the national and municipal elections in 2015? Yes, we are contesting both national and regional elections as “Podemos” political party, and also the local elections but throughout another juridical form called “Agrupación de Electores” or Association of Electors. This formula, allowed by Electoral Law, is meant to join the different political, social, economical and civil collectives, groups, affiliations and associations together in a citizenship list, formed by individuals proposed by them, voted by every citizen, in order to defend a citizen made political program, compulsive to apply and implement once we take over institutions. Historically, Orihuela has had a strong PP influence. Why do you think it is necessary for a change now? The change will only come if we, each individual, change our vision and actions, and understand that if want to change something, must act different. This is the real change, acting everyday to try to construct and build the society we want and wish. PP local governments were extremely harmful and pernicious, having left a big debt which is in many cases illegitimate. PSOE and LV neither are doing a better job, as little has been done this last legislature, being more of the same. PP and PSOE have demonstrated that they come together and support the

same policies, and they both are responsible of the current situation. So now, more than ever, the change is essential to end this long period of sacking and pillaging public resources by both parties to defend their own interest. What impact do you think that the loss of their majority in 2011 had on the local PP? It was necessary that PP lost its majority last legislature, to end a long period of opaque and corrupt public behaviour and praxis. This last years in the opposition, their only objective was to block any particular request or proposal from other parties, trying to recover local government by revoking motions, using every method they could to reach so, with no victory overall. Residents of the coastal area of Orihuela have considered themselves neglected in the past, with most investments going to the city rather than the coast. How will you change

that opinion if you are successful in your election campaign? I think this opinion reflects the reality in Orihuela Costa, an area that is the main source of municipal income, but it has some structural deficiencies and a lack of public services which has not been solved since many years ago. Population and urbanisation of the Coast have grown enormously the last two decades, with a chaotic town planning that was all but planned, as it was mostly done by promoters who bought a plot, requested a license to build the sector and town hall approved it, without any sense or prevision on a global and integral infrastructure planning for the whole area of the Coast. Only when residents and people from the Coast have the opportunity of participating in the local budget administration, they will be able, by own decision making, to produce the necessary investment of local resources directed to solve their main identified problems. Following Syriza’s win in the Greek elections Spain’s anti-austerity party Podemos hailed the victory with a dig at Germany. “It is the people’s hour,” the party tweeted, while Miguel Urbano, a Podemos leader in Athens to support Syriza said: “We have come to see with our own eyes the change that is starting in Greece but which is happening for the people of the south of Europe.” Another, Pablo Iglesias, said: "We will work to support Syriza but we will also work in Spain, acknowledging that it is a different economic and political reality."

GAY PRIDE King Felipe VI has appeared on the wrap of last week’s Ragap magazine making him the world's first monarch to appear on the cover of a gay mag. The king was featured in a special edition of the publication which was given away at the International Tourism Fair in Madrid. The royal household say that they are aware and approve of his appearance in the magazine.

ISOLATION WARD The government has agreed to set up a high-level isolation ward in the Central Defence Hospital, Madrid, to deal with cases of highly infectious diseases. A spokesperson said the aim is to "strengthen, improve and modernise an already-existing unit to provide the national defence service and the National Health System with highly necessary healthcare resources.

Although Podemos will be contesting the forthcoming Local Elections it will be unde the name ‘Agrupacion de Electores’ Continued From Page 7 What importance do you give to foreign residents and what benefits would there be to a foreign voter choosing Podemos? We give importance to any individual, any person who lives, contributes and share their lives with us in the municipality. Orihuela has many people from a large number of diverse nationalities who are working here, retiring or caring of their families, people who pay their taxes as everyone in the neighbourhood. In consequence they have the right to participate in local policies and decision making, demanding public institutions to render them compulsory public services. Smaller parties such as CLARO and CLR have gained interest in recent years, although they have both been involved in their own battles, do you think it is important for smaller political parties to work together as a coalition? The problem of these parties, as many others, is that pay little attention in general interest, as they are busy defending their own individual interests or those of whom finance them. I do not mean that their voters, militants or sympathisers want or pursue the same, I am confident that great majority have good faith as well as vocation to serve and help others. What do you and your party feel are

the most important changes that have to be made in Orihuela? We think the most important changes are directed to increase transparency and participation in public decision making, allowing all citizens to be able to consult the public accounts, and to decide about what kind of actuation wants to implement in the city. Thus we could avoid corrupted practices done through public administration by people and parties that have a long tradition of opacity and authoritarian practices. In Orihuela we have a main source of revenues from tourism, which is the most important sector after agricultural, so we must boost and strengthen tourism activities, putting in value our monuments, beaches, natural spaces, etc. Some urgent public works must be done as well: Schools in Orihuela Costa, Health Centre of Rabaloche, improve the existents, and put an end to long waiting lists and beds in the corridor, among others. We also have to draw an efficient transport and communication infrastructure planning, which connects the different districts of the municipality, both, physical and virtual. Tell us about your political background? I have had relations with almost all known parties, in one way or another. I have shared ideas with many people from many different origins, countries, movements, collectives, parties, ideologies, political views, theories, from the left to the right, liberal, dogmatic, pragmatic, labour, conservative, etc. There have been countless legal cases involving politic i a n s and corruption, h o w d o e s

any voter know who to trust and why should they trust Podemos? What is plain and clear is that we cannot trust anymore those parties that have corrupted active members, because that corruption is structural and systemic on them. Corruption does not affect one individual or one group; it needs the concurrency and implication of many individuals and groups of people (professionals, civil servers, politics, corporations, etc.). It is so implanted in the traditional political parties’ mechanism and institutions control by them that will not ever regenerate and recover themselves from inside. Podemos have people of different backgrounds, from students to retired people, along with public servers, workers, entrepreneurs, immigrants, educators, public health professionals, unemployed, retailers, disabled, lawyers, volunteers, etc., who never have been in Politics as public representatives. We are the common People, the ones who have worked or are working very hard to get this country going on, who pay taxes with everyday work and income, who carry out activities to make our neighbours and families’ lives easier and comfortable. What I get of all them is that we must be and act together. The common people are decent and honest, only want to have a pacific life with beloved ones with no shocks or traumas, most of them created by those supposed to protect and defend us. So now it is the moment to start involving ourselves in creating the public reality we wish and desire, now is the moment of change. We know how, we want, and we can. ¡Podemos! LAW TO PROTECT EMERGENCY WORKERS With a lot of controversy over the new criminal code which would give harsher sentences to those engaged in protests or civil disputes, little has been said about one element which is designed to help those who put their lives on the line for others.

The new Penal Code imposes prison sentences of between one and four years, plus hefty fines, for those who employ violence or seriously intimidate to the police or other similar authorities such as private security providers whom the government are also trying to give more power to. However, this code has also been extended to include other emergency workers, providing the same protection to fire fighters, medical staff and rescue teams, with prison threats for those who “prevent them from exercising their functions”. The bill amends sections 550 and 551 to allow judges, magistrates and prosecutors to deal with such cases, as opposed to the current status that limits the application of the laws to the Constitutional Court judges or members of the General Council of the Judiciary, in addition to deputies and government members. A clause is also included which offers protection to members of the public who are assisting in law enforcement, rescue or emergency situations.

ORIHUELA GOVERNMENT FOCUS ON PARTIES RATHER THAN THE NEEDY Orihuela´s first plenary meeting of the year was particularly notable this month, on account of a number of the councillors who make up the municipal corporation who were absent. Ousted former president of the Partido Popular, Pepa Ferrando, was attending a meeting in Valencia with the regional heads of her political group in an attempt to salvage her career. Former mayor and previous party head Monica Lorente was still absent, having been on leave since the announcement of her pregnancy. Asuncion Mayoral, ousted from CLR, had announced her resignation previously, whilst former party colleague Juan Ignacio López-Bas had a justified absence with the secretary. From the Los Verdes, the councillor for the Orihuela Costa, Martina Scheurer, was also certified on sick leave, as of course is her party colleague and mayor, Monseratte Guillén, still recovering from major heart surgery. Even with the reduced numbers, the session was not without the usual confrontations, starting off with the acting mayor, Antonio Zapata, being criticised by the CLR spokesperson, Pedro Mancebo, for not allowing a motion to be heard. With a three hour session somewhat shorter than previous meetings, only two motions were discussed, one raised by CLARO spokesperson Bob Houliston relating to social welfare on the coast, which was also criticised by Mancebo as nothing more than “electioneering, opportunistic and with false concern”. But the motion was carried.

The second motion was relating to the fiestas del barrio de San Antón and the fact that a competition had been previously left out. Mancebo was also critical of elements of the Three Kings parade whilst talking about the fiesta motion. The conclusion is that the representatives are

clearly focussed on the needs to address what happens in fiestas and parties, but less so on the needs of the people who are facing hardship, and even eviction, as whether the point was simply electioneering or not, the help requested to those in need has once again been directed towards having a good time.

AGAINST HUMAN RIGHTS Sirs, I have written to the government department you published last week. Not only did I say that I objected to the stopping of the allowance, that I worked all my life and still pay tax in the UK. I also mentioned that it is against our Human Rights to stop the allowance. Whether this will help or not I don't know, but I hope so, if gypsies in the UK can now camp on the green belt, because they played the Human Card why can't we. Regards Chris Martin. (by Email)

ILLEGAL RENTERS COULD FACE PROSECUTION I have just read the above article in your 26 January issue. Please could you confirm something for me. In the article you say "He said that the measures will be implemented from next spring, the season from which fraud

within the tourist apartment ector tends to intensify". Could you confirm, does this new decree come into effect Spring 2015 - or as I believe your article reads, spring 2016? Does prosecution start from Spring 2016 and not before if you have not registered your holiday rental property? Look forward to hearing from you. Barbara Green Editor: To my knowledge the law is still being formulated after which it has to be approved by the regional government so it would seem that introduction in spring 2016 would be more likely. Do be aware however that such ‘warnings’ have been made on many previous occasions without implementation.

ADVER TISING BILLBOARDS I refer to your article in this week's edition of The Leader entitled ' The Eyesore of Advertising Billboards' As a permanent resident of

Orihuela Costa since 2003, I fear you have not gone nearly far enough in terms of exploring and exposing the growing blight on our community. We have a council that seems more inclined to fight each other like ferrets in a sack rather than conduct a determined, coordinated and constructive development of the entire area of the coast. The council should demonstrate a philosophy of setting the underlying example of what the citizens should expect of their community and how we as citizens should respond in maintaining these expected standards. What do we really have? A group of Councillors who often appear to be pursuing their own agenda against each other rather than working together on behalf of the community at large. Seemingly unfettered building development without regard to the necessary accompanying infrastructure requirements. Dirty weed-strewn streets Builders rubbish and fly- tipping is widespread. Garden rubbish collection is intermittent and inconsistent.

Dog mess is everywhere Billboards sprouting everywhere. A lack of decent cultural and sporting venues. If the reason is lack of money, but I doubt that it really is, then the Council should embark on a positive campaign to encourage people to sign on the Padron. Additionally, you and your colleagues in the Press should be much more hard-hitting. Our Council deserves a hard time and you should be at the forefront of providing it. Regards David Stewart

WFA - RESPONSE FROM KEITH SIMPSON MP To: ericberg2@hotmail.com Subj: Winter Fuel Allowance Thank you for contacting me about the changes to Winter Fuel Payment. As you are aware, Ministers have announced that from winter 2015/16 Winter Fuel Payments will no longer be payable to individuals in EEA countries which

have an average winter temperature higher than the UK. This change will mean Winter Fuel Payments will no longer be payable in Portugal, Spain, Greece, France, Gibraltar, Malta, and Cyprus. I can pass on that the Government has worked with the Met Office to develop as robust a methodology as possible, and to analyse comparable winter temperature data across all EEA countries. This change will save around £30 million a year, broadly offsetting the cost of a recent European court judgment which stated that the Government must pay Winter Fuel Payment to EEA citizens who have a "genuine and sufficient link" with the UK. I do believe that this is an important change, which will re-focus the benefit on its original purpose and avoid a situation where the Government will be paying 115,000 people in warmer countries a Winter Fuel Payment by 2015. I hope this is information provides some reassurance. Thank you again for taking the time to contact me.

Yours sincerely, Keith Simpson MP

ERIC BERG REPLY TO KEITH SIMPSON MP Dear Mr Simpson, Your reply beggars belief! I am well aware of what Ministers are going to do in 2015/16 and you have done nothing to reply to the reasons as to why every peniosner here in Spain thinks it is a ludicrous decision. Can you please answer the following questions: 1) Has any Minister lived in a house in Spain in the winter? 2) Are houses in the UK insulated to keep heat in? 3) Are houses in Spain insulated to keep heat in? I am sorry to have to labor the point, but it appears to me that you have not taken the time to read my email I look forward to hearing from you in due course Regards, Eric Berg

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

Drilling for BlacK Gold There have been quite a few celebrations in the Canary Islands this week, following the decision of the Spanish oil company, Repsol, not to continue with its exploration for oil off the islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. The islands are an important tourist destination, and the threat of oil production taking place off the waters of these beautiful islands has shocked and angered residents for many years. The sea around these coasts is rich with marine life and the threat of serious, permanent ecological damage seemed to be only a matter of time. Despite all the reassurances from assorted ranks of politicians and ‘experts’, most people recognised that oil cannot be extracted with complete environmental safety. It short, it would be an accident waiting to happen. The Islands’ Government was also vehemently opposed to the proposals, which provoked a ‘head on’ constitutional clash with the Spanish Government. There were reviews, court challenges and appeals, debates, fierce arguments, protest marches, petitions, as well as serious threats that the Canary Islands should seek separation from Spain if the islanders’ wishes were not to be taken into account over this sensitive issue.

Finally, it looked as if the environmentalists had reached the end of a long and arduous journey, with the battle being lost to the oil company and the Spanish Government. Following pleas from the Spanish Prime Minister, Spain’s Constitutional Court stepped into the argument to prevent the long anticipated islands’ referendum from taking place, and the exploration work of digging 2000 metres below sea level began. Islanders watched with horror as the rigs and all the attendant paraphernalia moved into place. Not surprisingly, Spain’s Government hoped that a generous discovery of oil so close to home would help to ease its troubled bank balance, provide much needed employment, as well as reducing its reliance upon oil and gas supplies from Russia. It was envisaged that once oil production was fully operational, around 110,00 barrels of oil each day would flow from the islands, which is around 10 per cent of Spain’s consumption of oil. Despite being originally billed as potentially the largest discovery of oil in Spanish history, it was not to be. A statement from the company concluded that although oil and gas lie beneath the seabed, they are of poor quality, and of insufficient quantity to make the expensive business of extraction viable. The company decided to no longer pursue the business of extraction in the area and the oil rigs quietly moved away from the exploration site, leaving the islanders to heave huge sighs of relief.

People form a giant SOS as they protest in Corralejos

Poor geological survey results, together with an acute fall in oil prices, will hopefully mean that the area will be forgotten as a potential source of riches for years to come. Meanwhile, the Government has come up with another good idea, which is all set to cause another huge row with residents in the affected areas. How about a spot of fracking in another region of Spain? A NEW ENGLISH TEACHING SYSTEM ON THE COSTA BLANCA If you know somebody looking to learn English, then you need to tell them about a new and unique teaching system has arrived on the Costa Blanca. Thanks to Debbie Coupe, the new professional and yet simple and child-friendly system will aid them on the path of learning to speak, read and write in English. The Sounds-Write Programme is presented by Debbie Coupe, who started teaching after gaining a degree in Education at Christ Church University in Canterbury. Having taught in both mainstream and special education, Debbie also became the head of the Primary department for 6 years and wrote and implemented a topic-based curriculum for the new National Curriculum in 2014. The Sounds-Write system has both a psychological and rational behind its methods, which has a range of levels depending on the ability of the learner, “It is the only scheme I have come across that uses the alphabet as a reversible code in other words speaking, reading and writing must be learnt together”, Debbie explains.

“At its heart it teaches children to segment, blend and manipulate sounds, or phonemes”, Debbie continued, whilst explaining how “we have 44 sounds in our language and only 26 letters of the alphabet to make those sounds”. Although Sounds-Write has a step by step prescribed programme element it also has computer software, games and its own set of accompanying books to support the child´s progress and success. Now, having taken early retirement from teaching, Debbie and her husband have moved to the house in Spain they have had for 10 years, and although sad to leave grown up children and four lovely grandchildren, Debbie hopes to transfer her skills to support speaking, reading and writing within a safe and happy environment, whilst continuing to do something that she both loves and is good at here on the Costa Blanca. For more information you can call Debbie on 966 763 025, or her mobile 634 312 523 and see her advert in The Leader newspaper on page 3.

A NEW RESOURCE FOR TRAFFIC LAWS Traffic laws and the rules of the road may be a Little confusing to some, especially given that as foreigners we have to adapt what we have learnt and practiced for many years in our home country to our new homeland, adapting what we think may be true to the reality of the law in Spain, but now, thanks to a group of Guardia Civil Traffic officers in Torrevieja, there is now a wealth of information available to users of Facebook. One of the founders of the “N332” page, Francisco, explained, “We are a group of Spanish Traffic Police Officers located in Torrevieja, who has launched a page on Facebook to inform European Drivers about all the information related to traffic matters. The articles are published in English because we think most of the foreigner drivers do not follow the traffic laws because they don´t know them”, and therefore the group wish to share their knowledge through the social networks, and the English press, whilst welcoming any question you have related to traffic. Within just a couple of days of the launch of the page, they already clocked up nearly 2,000 followers, which Francisco explains “makes us work harder every day to inform them, about all changes taking place every day in traffic law”. So if you have a burning question, or just want to know a little more about safe and legal driving in Spain, make sure you search for and “like” the page named “N332”, so called “in honour to the main road which goes through the coastline where we work every day”, Francisco concludes.

MORÓN AIR BASE Negotiations are taking place between Spain and the United States with the aim of accomodating the permanent deployment of a crisis response military force at Morón de la Frontera Air Base (Seville). The temporary deployment was authorised on 19 April 2013 for the security of partners and neighbours, as well as for Spain, in a key region for maintaining global peace and stability.

PRIVATE FLY The Spanish government has given the green light to the sale of airport operator AENA, initially selling a 28% share of the company which is the world's biggest airport operator by passenger volume. The shares will be listed on 11 February, with the sale set to bring in between 1.5 and 2 billion euro. Aena operates 46 Spanish airports and has stakes in other airports, such as Colombia, Mexico and London's Luton, dealing with 187 million passengers a year. 51% of the capital will remain in the hands of the State and the workers will continue to be public servants.

WILDFIRES The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Affairs has published the statistics on wildfires between 1 January and 31 December 2014 on its website, which indicates that a total number of 9,754 wildfires occurred in 2014, the lowest amount in the last 10 years. Until this year, the lowest number of wildfires in a single year during the last decade was 10,797 (in 2013).

NI CONTRIBUTIONS

Staff at the Leader were invited to spend an afternoon with Trafico in Torrevieja last week

The number of foreigners within the Spanish Social Security System stood at 1,552,639 in December, an increase of 0.21% on the previous month and an increase of 3,241 average contributors. This is the first increase in the number of foreign NI contributors in Spain following five months of decline.

SPEED WALKING FINE DENIAL The DGT traffic department has issued a notice denying that pedestrians will be fined for walking too fast. The statement is in response to reports in numerous newspapers regarding proposed changes to the rules of the road. Referring to the suggestions that pedestrians can be punished, the DGT confirm that “This agency wants flatly deny that possibility”. They also confirm that the proposed draft of the law is the same as that which has been in existence since 1992, although there are regulations referring to carts and carriages which may be propelled or pulled manually, where legislation is in place to ensure their safe operation.

END OF THE ROA D FOR PETROL ENGINES The next three years will undoubtedly see the introduction of new and improved fuel-saving technologies which will go on to dominate motor vehicle development, a new report from think tank Navigant Research says More than that, it draws the conclusion that by the end of 2017 fewer than half the cars on the road will be powered by 'conventional petrol engines' i.e. without some high-tech features designed specifically to reduce fuel consumption, even if it's just an idle-stop function, which Navigant seems to think is going to be the most important innovation in improving fuel efficiency. While we don’t necessarily agree with all their conclusions, it is true that multiple factors, including increasingly strict global standards to limit carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, are driving manufacturers to produce more efficient vehicles. Navigant expects the prevalence of alternative fuels - ethanol, petrolethanol blends, hydrogen, bio-diesel, liquid propane gas and battery power - to continue growing, but says petrol as we know it will remain the leading fuel in the coming years, albeit in smaller-engined, highcompression engines, often turbocharged. Senior research analyst David Alexander commented: "There is no single technology that will dominate fuel efficiency improvements in the next decade. "The focus, instead, will be on incremental improvements in engines and transmissions, along with weight reduction in as many places as possible." Idle-stop technology, he predicted, would add functionality until it became a sort of mild hybrid, with the ability to capture and store energy without the weight (and cost) penalty of a big battery.

Increasingly strict global standards to limit carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases are driving manufacturers to produce more efficient vehicles

Whether that means using a capacitor to store electrical energy or a high-speed, dual-mass flywheel to store kinetic energy while the engine isn't running we don't know, and to be candid we don't think Alexander does either, but the inference is plain: the next big thing in automotive design is to waste less of the energy produced by burning hydrocarbon fuels to the atmosphere as heat. Because every kilowatt that we recover and put back into the car's systems benefits us twice: it's another spoonful of fuel that doesn't need to be converted into carbon dioxide and another kilowatt of heat that's not adding to the problem of global warming. Energy recovery is already the New Big Thing in Formula One, and Navigant expects sales of petrol and diesel vehicles fitted with sophisticated idle-stop technology to reach 63 million annually by 2025, representing 58 percent of all vehicles sold. The report looks at the effect of consumer demand for more fuel-efficient vehicles, and political pressure to reduce emissions, on engine technology and lightweight materials. Its global forecasts for vehicle sales, grouped by region, type of fuel and even the number of cylinders, are extrapolated through to 2025, along with forecasts for the sales volumes of important fuel-efficiency systems - and you have only to look at the world market for catalysers to know how significant that could be.

ADDRESSING SOCIAL WELFARE BURNS NIGHT AT ALFIES WITH SHORTCOMINGS ON THE ORIHUELA COSTA THE RBL Over sixty members and friends of The Orihuela Costa branch of The Royal British Legion enjoyed an evening at Alfie's Place in La Zenia last Sunday evening where, in age old tradition, they celebrated the birth of Scotland's favourite son, Robert (Rabbi) Burns. The haggis was piped in by Barry Waddington of the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums, followed by Jim Watt with the haggis, which was addressed by Mark who then entertained us with some Scottish dancing. An excellent meal followed together with dancing to the music and singing by Andy Jones. The raffle raised 198â‚Ź of which 98â‚Ź was donated to the Poppy Appeal. A good night was had by all. The next RBL event will be a luncheon on Thursday 26th February at La Piazza 2 at Punta Marina. This will be followed by the Easter Sunday lunch on April 5th at Sunrise.

Bob Houliston, C.L.A.R.O. Councillor, presented a motion in the full council meeting this week, aimed at addressing the many social welfare problems and shortcomings which exist in Orihuela Costa. The Motion was approved by a clear majority despite the Socialist/Green party government voted against. Bob Houliston recalled that due to the crisis and high level of unemployment, many families living on the coast had to turn to charitable organisations for help with food and support to pay essential bills like electricity. Caritas of Orihuela Costa currently looks after the needs of 60 families every week, the equivalent of 120 persons. Although independent of Caritas Orihuela, they receive no financial help from the Orihuela local government. This help is needed. Those living in Orihuela Costa will be familiar with the two blocks of social housing built pre-crisis, nearly 7 years ago, originally for sale at non-profit prices. They remain empty and abandoned despite the fact that many Orihuela families are being evicted from their homes because of mortgage payment problems. It is shameful that after 7 years no convincing action by the local government has been taken to enable these apartment blocks to be occupied on a rental basis. The local government blames the regional government in Valencia for this situation but, after nearly 4 years in office, this is not a good enough excuse. For those in Orihuela Costa seeking help in whatever form, meals on wheels, home help or economic support, they should first speak to the Social Assistant in the Civic Centre, Alameda del Mar. There is an income threshold for this assistance but despite this, many are eligible for such help. The Social Assistant is present four mornings a week. But as Bob Houliston pointed out, requests for appointments must be made in advance in Spanish by telephone to Orihuela city social services department. Why cannot appointments be made on the spot with the helpful personnel of the Civic Centre? In the debate on the Motion, the councillor responsible asserted that the rules are the rules and if you cannot speak Spanish, seek the help of an interpreter. The Motion addressed the problem of the inadequacies of the small Civic Centre in Alameda del Mar. With the population of the coast and

Orihuela city being almost equal and the fact that those living on the coast pay via taxes a very high share of the income of Orihuela, it is revealing that the Orihuela Costa Civic Centre has some 500 affiliates whereas the Montserrate del Virgin Centre in Orihuela has some 3000 affiliates, six times more. Orihuela Costa has a deficit in other areas of social policy. There is no Youth Centre. The Municipal Sports Centre (CMD charges fees which are beyond the means of many individuals or groups. The 100 youngsters who regularly play organised football have to go to neighbouring Pilar to train and play their games because the prices of the CMD are unaffordable. There are other pieces of sports-designated municipally owned land in Orihuela Costa which could be put to use but the Town Hall has never bothered to finish and equip them so as to provide additional sports activities, free of charge, as in other areas of the municipality. Although the majority in the Plenary approved the Motion which called for action in all the areas dealt with to correct the shortcomings in social welfare in Orihuela Costa, it is to be feared that the negative vote of the government means we will not get action in these areas until after the municipal election in May.

INDIAN DRUGS WITHDRA WN FOR TESTING IRREGULARITIES At the request of the European Medicines Agency, the Spanish Ministry of Health has suspended the sale of 29 generic medicinal drugs after finding that the company who provide them have been using unauthorised practices prior to them being approved for sale. However, the Ministry has stressed that there is no evidence of any risk to patients taking the medication as the chemical compound is exactly the same as those drugs which are approved, and that treatment should continue as normal for those who are in possession of the drugs. An audit of over 1,000 presentations of generic drugs was carried out by the health department, resulting in the withdrawal of the 29 different drugs manufactured by the GVK Biosciences company in Hyderabad, India, where evidence of a breach of the rules of Good Clinical Practice in bioequivalence studies were found. The drugs in question are a range of antihistamines such as 'Ebastina' or 'Desloratadina', antihypertensive 'Valsartán / hidroclorotiazida' or 'Irbesartán / hidroclorotiazida', the antidepressant

'Escitalopram', antidiabetic 'Repaglinida' and Alzheimer´s treatment 'Donepezilo', amongst others. Once again though, it is stressed that there is no evidence that the drugs are harmful and patients should continue treatment, the action is as a sanction towards the company and is not for the protection of the public.

ALCOHOL DOES NOT HELP YOU SLEEP

The results of a study to be published in February´s online edition of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research, reveals that consuming alcohol before going to bed can result in sleeping disorders and problems. The authors of the study say that “People tend to focus on alcohol and its commonly known sedative properties, which is reflected in shorter times to sleep, especially in adults, rather than sleep disruption that occurs later in the night”, said Christian L. Nicholas, expert in sleep research at the University of Meloburne, Australia. In people who drink before bedtime, alcohol initially acts as a sedative, marked by the activity of the delta frequency in the electroencephalogram (EEG) of SWS, but later is associated with sleep disruption. Also, significant decreases in the activity of the delta frequency and power with normal development between the ages of 12 and 16 are produced. The study involved 24 participants (12 women and 12

men) all healthy and aged between 18 and 21 years of age. They were social drinkers who consumed less than seven standard drinks per week for the past 30 days. Each individual underwent two situations: alcohol intake before bed as well as a placebo, followed by standard polysomnography with integrated EEG recordings. The results showed that if sleep is regularly interrupted by alcohol before bedtime, especially for long periods of time, this could have significant negative effects on welfare during the day and neurocognitive function such as processes of learning and memory. Alcohol does not help you sleep, according to Nicholas, “The main message is that alcohol is not really good for sleeping even though it may seem that helps you fall asleep faster. In fact, the quality of sleep you get is significantly altered and disturbed,” he concludes.

Would foreign homeown ers want Greece to slip away from the Eurozone? Greece’s likelihood of remaining in the Eurozone and of not disrupting the stability of the single currency bloc and European property markets should be welcomed by foreign homeowners across Europe, although the Greek property market can expect a lull until the country’s economic future is clearer, says OverseasGuidesCompany.com “While Greece’s new government attempts to re-negotiate their antibailout terms with Brussels, uncertainty over the country’s economic policy and political stability could deter foreign buyers from purchasing property there, at least on a temporary basis,” said Angelos Koutsoudes, Head of OverseasGuidesCompany.com. “It could also cause movement in the sterling/euro exchange rate.” “Understandably, someone on the verge of buying a second home in Greece – and even more significantly, people moving there – will want to step back and see how things pan out in the coming months. But remember, Cyprus was in a similarly precarious situation two years ago, yet has remained in the euro and today foreign interest in property there is returning. Existing homeowners in Greece could also benefit from the anti-austerity stance of the new government – they’ve pledged to abolish the controversial property tax, potentially saving home-

owners money each year. “Meanwhile, the euro is hovering around a six-year low against sterling, fuelled by the decision to introduce Quantitative Easing into the Eurozone, the unpegging of the Swiss franc against the euro, and the results of the Greek election. This is certainly good news for Brits on the verge of purchasing property in the Eurozone. Whether the euro can recover or will lose more value is unknown, but in the short-term will depend on whether Greece can reach an agreement with Brussels that instils confidence in the global markets.” The photo shows Angelos Koutsoudes, Head of the OverseasGuidesCompany.com

La Manga Bowls Club welcomes bowlers of all abilities from the surrounding area and coaching and help is available if needed. Social bowls is available during the week both summer and winter and also at weekends. Various club competitions are organised throughout the winter season for those who enjoy the competitive element.

EL RANCHO BOWLS CLUB The week got off to a perhaps disappointing start, or so it may appear. But we must remember that we play some very strong teams and you don’t have to play badly to lose. And most importantly, we play our sport to improve, enjoy the great company of splendid team mates and opponents. The first may take a little while with the kind tuition and encouragement of our stronger team members, the second we have at every meeting, so just enjoy it, it is only a game. The Broncos were away to the strong, but very friendly Matadors at Monte Mar and had a good morning despite leaving without a point. John Cleal, David Haynes and John Skipper 9-28.Bob Easthope, Ron Edwards and Shirley Edwards 8-21.Tony Robinson, Graham Day and John Donovan 8-19. Marion Haynes, Tricia Elsam and Malc Elmore 14-16. Maureen Newell, Rob Clark and John Newell 8-30. Helga Schiffman, Merv Armstrong and David Whitworth 11-25. Friday found The Mustangs travelling to La Manga and as you would expect we struggled a little with the speed of the rink, however we must not forget that every playing venue has it’s problems for most visitors, including our own. La Manga is very slow, El Rancho is very fast and the rest have runs and other anomalies, but what the hell if the company is good, what does the result matter. So we had a good time, had an experience and came away without a point, despite some good bowls. Jane Hamill, Merv Armstrong and David Whitworth 8-30. John Skipper, Malc Sykes and Carolyn Harris 7-25. Barbara Jones, Gary Newson and Geoff Jones 12-26. June Whitworth, Keith Cunningham and Stew Hamill 13-24. Tony Robinson, Irene Thomson and Eddie Thomson 10-23. Margaret Odell, Brian Taylor and Ron Odell 13-17. LA SIESTA BOWLS REPORT By Norman Adcroft SABA Discovery and Voyager Leagues 26th Jan. The Apollos travelled to Country Bowls for a game against their Flamingos and ended up on the wrong end of an 11-3 defeat managing only to win one, and draw another. Winners, Ramsay Sinclair, Yours Truly, Brian Gardiner19-16, and our drawn game, Hilary Clarke, Bill Jordan with Jean Cooper 17-17. The Pioneers suffered yet another defeat on Monday, this time against La Marina Astronauts. As in the past we weren’t far away but just failed to turn narrow defeats into wins. Our winners were Pat Baylis, Bernadette McDonnell and Mike Kelly 31-9. That said we lost only two games by one shot and one by three. Overall we managed to draw on shots but still went 3-11 down. The Sputniks entertained Quesada Diamonds and it turned out to be a game of two sides of equal ability. No surprisingly it was a close game from start to finish with both sides winning three rinks each. In the end it came down to the shots, which Quesada took by ONE shot 109-110 proving that every shot counts. Winners were, Jean James, Liz Combstock, John Taylor 29-6, Dawn Taylor, Ken Combstock, Dave Laverick 23-19 and Irene Laverick, Alex Morrice, Irene Mangan 2016. Result 6-8 Quesada. Winter League 28th Jan. A difficult, but an always friendly and enjoyable meeting against our nearest neighbours San Luis ending with us going down heavily losing on all rinks (including Berleen)...’nuff said. CBBA Southern League A, B and C 30th Jan. The Blues had hard luck this week. We had two rinks losing by only one point, and one rink losing by 2 points, so once again no points to La Siesta. The Golds were at home today against a strong La marina Dolphins side but alas the game didn’t go our way with the Dolphins winning on three rinks and drawing one. Final result shots 95-114 thus 5- 9 to La Marina. Our winning Rinks were Win and Ken Kirton, Livesey 2314 and Dave Davies, Carol and Gary Thorpe 20-14. Our drawn rink was Sheila Millward, Johnnie Ryder, John Taylor 14-14.The Silvers had a morning away game against The Monte Mar Toreador’s and didn’t fare too well going down 12-2 by only taking one rink thanks to Val Dalton, Alex Morrice and Harold Charleton 20-16. Shots Toreadors 118-78 Chicken and Egg 28th Jan Chicken, Allister Mathieson, Wine, Trigger, Eggs, Stuart Rolls.

LA MARINA BOWLS CLUB By Bobbie Sims LA MARINA ASTRONAUTS Brilliant result for the Astronauts this week, 11 points to 3 and equal shots of 103 against La Siesta Pioneers. well done everyone, but top of the teams were Brenda Brain, Jeff Halfhide and John Rae winning 26-17. LA MARINA PATHFINDERS Another good result for our league team this week, a win against Monte Mar Toreadors by 12 points to 2 and shots of 119 -99. A good team effort all round but highest shot difference goes to Ann Stone, Berni Carr and Sue Daniels winning by 24-12. LA MARINA EXPLORERS. A hard time today against San Luis Klingons, just 4 points to 10 and shots of 83-123, well done to our two winning teams and especially Frank Polak, Jim Reeves and Alex Whyte with a score 27-18 We had a bye this week for the Fed 4s LA MARINA DOLPHINS This week away to La Siesta Golds and won with 9 points to 5 with 3 wins and a draw and shots of 114-95, the highest winning difference was with Martin Butler, Cliff Rawlinson and Brian Duff with a great 31-9. LA MARINA SEAGULLS A tougher time for the Gulls this time just managing to get 2 points against Mazzaron Miner's 12 points away. The shots were 72-125. A long way to go for this result but I'm sure you all gave it your best effort. LA MARINA SHARKS The Sharks were up against La Siesta Blues today and came home with all the points 14 to 0 and a shot difference of 121-82, some brilliant games , and the best shot difference goes to Chris Webb, Tom Spencer and Peter Parsons. A stunning 49 tons plus a multitude of 80 pluses were recorded in this week´s top of the table clash between the Hyenas and Meerkats, in a jam packed Hub Sports Bar. 29 of the tons went to the Kats who gave their best performance of the season so far. The Hyenas´ ton tally would have toppled any other side, such was the standard of play. Captain Simon Williams had no problem motivating his side, but they were slow out of the blocks in the first three triples and paid the price by being 3-0 down to doubles from Pat Abrams D10, Dave Frew D2 and Abrams D10 in the third. Most of the damage coming from Paul Durrant 125,125,116 plus a 140 from Abrams. Hyenas response a ton from John Eyre and two more from Nick Spicer. The same two were chosen by Williams for the first pairs against Abrams and Alex Nikolov, Spicer recorded 100,100,123, Nikolov 2x100, but the all important double went to Abrams on D13. Shaun Smith figured next with the captain, Smith recently laid low with an ear infection gave a good account of himself with 100 and 140 equalled by Frew and Del Kingsbury, the latter finding the crucial double D20. Lee Maiden got himself on the score board with a ton and D20 partnering Durrant in their game with both Joe´s, Hawkins and Miller. 0-6 at half time, absolutely unbelievable and at least a draw for the league leaders, keeping the Hyenas at least a point behind and the Kats unbeaten record intact. Williams response was emphatic, Spicer to go first against Graham Todd. The Meerkat gave their top man a real fright, scoring 95,117,121 and 133 plus taking the second of three legs. Spicer´s response 2x100, 140 and both doubles for the Hyenas´ first leg of the evening. Smith was selected next and yet again it was a three leg thriller, in fact 5 of the 6 singles went all 3 legs. Smith´s opponent Frew 100,121 took the first in 18 darts and added 100,140 in the two remaining legs only for the talented Smith to take out D8,D5 plus 2x100. The noise level increased as the hosts sensed the draw was a possibility with 4 strong players remaining. Miller was next and opened with 100 and 109 v. Abrams who couldn’t find a treble, but managed D10 for the first. Miller took the second with 140 and D10, Abrams having the darts in the decider. The Meerkat

Eyre enjoyed the throw against Durrant in the 9th leg and posted a 140 and D20, his opponent 100 and 95. A 99 and 2x100 from the Meerkat plus the double made it all square. Eyre couldn’t take advantage of throw in the third as Durrant nailed 2x100 and D20 for the game. The fifth single went all the way as Hawkins took the first on D16 and slipped in a ton in the second against Nikolov who matched the ton but nailed 85 with T15 and D20. That seemed to knock the stuffing out of the useful Hawkins who failed to hit any big scores as the Bulgarian made it 2-1 with 100 and 139. Maiden concluded the match with the only 2-0 against a spirited Geoff Harvey performance, on D2 plus 99,100 and 121. Quality match well hosted by Simon Williams and his Hyenas. Ale House played host to the Breakaways who slipped up last week against the Tavern. Was a repeat on the cards? TORRY TENPIN BOWLERS IN MEDAL GRAPPLE Madrid and Torrevieja 2015/1/25 – The second Team of Six Round Robin of the Spanish Tenpin Bowling Premiership was bowled last weekend in Madrid (men) and Torrevieja (ladies). Club Euro Bowling Torrevieja’s both teams won five of their seven matches and improved their standing. So much so that the Torry men are now positioned as runners-up and can feel the silver medals in their fingertips. The EBT ladies are equally well positioned to catch a meritorious fifth place. The male winning team is already practically announced, as Diagonal of Barcelona will travel to the final meeting in March with a whopping 46point advantage. Euro Bowling Torrevieja, this time composed by Spanish and Scandinavian bowlers and captained by the Norwegian resident Kjell Monsen, did well in Madrid and managed to rise from fourth to second place. However, Celta de Vigo are breathing in their neck, only three points behind. A mere ten points now separate four tems in contention of the silver medals, so high tension is guaranteed for the last round.

SAN JAVIER GOLF SOCIETY - RODA Golf - 21 JANUARY 2015

(Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. Why do Golf Courses in Spain turn brown in the Winter? Last winter I stood with a client overlooking the course at Lo Romero which was wearing the yellow/ brown overcoat and he asked me why I had taken him to a course with dead grass and I has to explain to him about the Bermuda grass used on local courses which 'hibernate' when the average night time temperatures fall below 7 degrees. Interestingly enough one week later I stood in the same spot but with higher temperatures and the course had turned green almost over night. Clearly there is a lack of understanding of the reasons for the use of Bermuda grass on the local courses and this article will hopefully clarify some of the key points and concerns. Bermuda grass is the toughest grass used for turf in desert and dry regions, unmatched by any other type of grass and has the following benefits: · excellent resistance to heat and drought · low water use rate · relatively rapid growth rate and crowds out weeds · tolerance of a wide range of soil pH ranges · good tolerance to salty water and conditions · good traffic tolerance · relative ease of establishment · grows on hard soil surfaces and shallow soils, better than most other grasses Bermuda grass is believed to have developed from contaminated hay used by slaves as 'bedding' arriving in America from Africa and was used in the southern United States in the early 1900's as a golf course turf, and was used as an "alternative" for sand greens, which were exactly that – a putting surface comprised of sand, with no grass! Over time (many decades), scientists and golf course greenkeepers have developed many different 'strains' and 'types' of Bermuda grass to meet the needs in a variety of conditions and to avoid 'scalping' when cutting grass in hot weather after heavy rain. The alternative to the use of Bermuda grass is to over seed in the Spring and Autumn with grasses that remain green but this is a costly exercise and disrupts the golf courses as fairways are protected over the period of weeks. So there you have it,you will never complain about why the courses look brown in the winter again and there is a whole history and industry in the development of the grass on which we enjoy playing our golf. TORRY HA MMERED IN AWFUL DISPLAY CF TORRE LEVANTE ...4 CD TORREVIEJA .........0 Having played so well in their last 4 outings on the road, Torry deservedly took a nose dive against an impressive Torre Levante outfit, which also completed a double for the side from north Valencia, who in my opinion are without doubt the best side Torry have faced this season. There can be no excuses, for the hosts simply outshone their visitors in all departments. For once, no blame can be attached to the referee, for Senor Gomez from Elche controlled the match superbly, allowing the victors to benefit from his sensible use of the advantage clause, whilst only cautioning when necessary. So, why have Torry lost the last 2 matches so dismally, since reaching the dizzy heights of 2nd in div 3? Basically, it's been the same group of players involved in both good and not so good displays, but somehow the attitude has changed dramatically. Poor distribution, reluctance to shoot at goal, lack of aggression and commitment, are just some of the reasons why Galiana's men have produced the results they have. Galiana must take some of the blame, for his selection and tactics have at times been bewildering, but he will point to the many

games when he got it right. But now it's broken and it needs fixing, quickly!! After 14 mins, Berna clumsily upended an opponent inside the box, allowing Deivid to send Oscar the wrong way from the spot. A comical defensive mix up 10 min later, allowed Marcos to square the ball to Deivid, presenting him the simplest of tap ins. Only a last ditch clearance off the line by Alexis on the stroke of half time, prevented the visitors from falling further behind. Galiana's team talk during the interval didn't have the desired effect either, for within 2 mins of the restart, Corell shot into the side netting, with Oscar out of position. Jorge then pressed the self destruct button, when he clearly fouled Marcos, giving Deivid the opportunity to convert the resultant penalty, which he duly obliged. Torry had no answer for Deivid, who thoroughly deserved his hat trick, and quite easily could have had more. Even the hosts defenders got in on the act, as Oscar was having to deal with shots from all directions. In fact, had it not been for Torry's keepers brilliance, 7 or 8 goals would not have flattered their opponents. A sad statistic, is that sub Corella's weak shot on 76 mins, was Torry's first on target! Two mins later, that number was doubled, for full back Vicente's

venomous drive was acrobatically saved, as Torry embarked on a belated show of desire to restore some pride. Unfortunately, the fight back was short lived, for on 80 mins, that man Deivid provided an assist for Juanra to strike a dipping 20 yard effort, which gave Oscar no chance. Torry did get the ball in the net late on, but Cesar's effort was ruled out for offside, then in stoppage time, new signing sub Pinera shot straight at the keeper, when through on goal. Both Berna and Jorge picked up bookings for their penalty misdemeanours, alongside team mate
