CABO ROIG BEACH RESCUE AS PENSIONER FALLS THROUGH SINKHOLE dramatic rescue by Cabo Roig beach on Saturday afternoon saw a pensioner fall through a sinkhole in the coastal footpath just above La Caletta Playa.
A
The incident occurred at about 4pm when the lady, said to be Scandinavian, was walking
down a closed path with her husband, having first moved the no entry barrier to gain access. As she walked along the footpath just above the beach, seemingly oblivious to the dangers, she fell dramatically through the hole and into the trees and bramble immediately
below. Fortunately the undergrowth stopped her falling further although, having incurred injuries as she fell, she was trapped and unable to move. The husband climbed over the barrier and down the slope where he found his wife in a state of shock and a great deal of pain. He was able to call
112 and alert the emergency services which took approximately 20 minutes to respond. The incident was attended by 2 fire tenders from Torrevieja and a local SAMU ambulance with paramedics as well as members of the Local Police. from Orihuela Costa. Continued on Page 02

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 Cabo Roig Beach Rescue It then took the firefighters approximately an hour to stabilise the injured woman and move her down a series of ramps onto the beach where she was attended to by the paramedics. Her husband followed his wife down with only minor assistance from the firefighters. As they placed the stretcher containing the injured lady onto the sand there was a spontaneous outbreak of applause from a large group of spectators who had been watching the rescue operation from the beach. The lady was transferred to the Samu ambulance after which she was then moved to Torrevieja hospital for further treatment. It is thought that she sustained only minor injuries. Witnesses to the incident, who were following along the path behind the couple, saw them move the no entry barrier, replace it and continue
along the closed path. One man, who was walking along with a friend, told me “The barrier was there for a reason so we decided to turn back and take an alternative route. I saw the woman and her husband walking along and she just disappeared from view, almost as though she had fallen through a sinkhole. It was quite dramatic. Her husband then climbed over the wooden fence to try to help.” It is understood that the hole in the walkway first appeared during the heavy Gota Fria rains some weeks ago, but apart from erecting a yellow metal barrier, the authorities have yet to take any remedial action. Perhaps now the site might attract a visit from the councillor for the coast who has yet to make himself known on the Orihuela Costa, and the finance be found to properly repair the coastal path. Boulevard turns Pink Maria and the Pink Ladies once again marked International Breast Cancer Day at Zenia Boulevard on Sunday. This was the sixth year that the event has been held at the Boulevard, with over 2000 helium filled balloons released on each of the previous five occasions. However this year it was decided that due to the impact on the environment the balloon release would not take place. Instead, supporters created a mural of floral messages dedicated to those who are suffering from the disease, those who have survived and
those who unfortunately didn’t. For a donation of 2 euro individuals were invited to add a flower to the mural, the total of which organisers hoped would exceed that raised last year of €2632. With entertainment throughout Sunday afternoon the event was once again supported by many local entertainers, all of whom gave their time absolutely free of charge. The day was again hosted by Stevie Spit and Simon Moreton

Workshops, parades and costume contests to mark Halloween The unquiet spirits, vampires and the omnipresent zombies will take over the streets next Thursday in the name of spooky fun, no more so than in Torrevieja where the Councillor for Commerce, Rosario Martínez Chazarra, and the Councillor for Youth, Diana Box Alonso, have announced details of the activities that will take place on Thursday, October 31 during the Halloween holiday in the Plaza de la Constitución, Paseo Vista Alegre, Paseo de la Libertad, and in the commercial area of Torrevieja. The shops, through the Association of Small and Medium-sized Merchants (Apymeco), as well as many establishments that are not within the association, will take part in the City Council promotion. In addition, Apymeco will present two prizes, one for "The most terrifying photo" and another for the "Best individual costume" in the parade, with the winners receiving a night at a four-star hotel, spa session, dinner and breakfast. From 7pm there will be a parade through the commercial area with the aim of encouraging visitors to visit local shops.
this newspaper.
The Halloween parade itself will feature a float as well as many schools and dance academies of the city, and is open to anywone who wishes to take part.
The weekend will start on Thursday, 31st October 2019, with a screening of the horror film, “Coco” the story of a young woman who is haunted by memories of her childhood.
It will start from the Town Hall, in the Plaza de la Constitución, continue along Calle Ramón Gallud to Calle María Parodi and then on to Paseo de la Libertad. On the Paseo de la Libertad it will stop in front of the stage where the prize for the best individual costume will be presented.
On Friday, visitors to the La Zenia Boulevard will be able to enjoy face painting at various points around the centre, and can take part in the “Day of the Dead” game.
On the Orihuela Costa the 3rd Halloween Orihuela Costa Parade will take place, starting at 6:30 p.m. in the La Florida urbanisation. It will be held in the streets around The Abbey Tavern featuring music, children's entertainment, inflatables and face painting for children. Once again the lead will be from the city council although there will also be a major involvement from neighborhood associations of La Florida Las Fillipinas and schools. The Halloween parade in Zenia Boulevard will take place at 6.30 pm on Saturday although there will also be events on Thursday and Friday, details of which are available on the website at: zeniaboulevard.es/eventos. There is also info on the back page of
On Saturday, the “Day of the Dead” game strikes again and visitors are given a second opportunity to take part prior to the parade. There is also a “Halloween Musical” and the little ones can spend their time taking part in a children’s mask-making workshop. More details are also available on the official website of the La Zenia Boulevard Shopping Center which can be found at www.zeniaboulevard.es. Of course the night is also a favourite for children who go ‘Trick-ortreating,’ setting off on Halloween night in costume and ringing doorbells to demand treats. Although a tradition in the UK and Ireland for more than a century it tends not to happen so much here in Spain because of the difficulties presented in gaining access to gated communities, but there are many children who will persevere so do make sure that you are stocked up with penny treats just in case. In the event of having a peaceful night without the constant chapping on the door you will at least have the pleasure of being able to enjoy the treats yourself over the weekend.

C orvera reaches 1 million passengers
The Murcia Government has said that it will begin to make money and recover its costs at Corvera airport earlier than planned, with the Aena concessionaire achieving its target of one million passengers for the year. The Community will now receive a fee of 0.84 euros per passenger, so the first payment that Aena will make will exceed 840,000 euros, as the passenger traffic for the months of November and December still has to be calculated and added. The general director of Aena, Mariano Menor, said that Corvera was around 10% below the traffic achieved at San Javier, but 10% above the initial forecasts envisaged in the contract. The regional government will now start to recover part of the 182 million euro loan that it had to provide in 2012 as guarantor of the previous concessionaire, Aeromur, who’s contract was subsequently
withdrawn. However it is very unlikely that the outlay will be recovered over the 25 years of the Aena concession, which targets a figure of 4 million passengers annually by the end of the contract. Murcia International Airport closed in September with 904,828 passengers since it first opened in mid-January. Last month it lost 18,424 users compared to the same period last year at San Javier but over the entire year the loss is closer to 120,000 travellers, although Aena emphasizes that it has done rather better than its forecast. A boost for Corvera is the new route with Oviedo that was operated by Volotea this summer, which next year it will establish one with Bilbao. There is also a new link to Palma de Mallorca, and now Binter has started flights to Gran Canaria. The conversations with Vueling to establish a route with Barcelona are also very advanced.

Forget about a Bay City Rollers re-union By Andrew Atkinson LES McKeown from the Bay City City Rollers has 'rolled over' another reunion - in the wake of a gig at Villamartin plaza. “The re- project failed because of the attitude of some of the people involved - it’s a shame," said McKeown. McKeown, who rolled back the years in Villamartin, said: “At the end of the day I have to think about myself - and my band. "I have to ask myself: ‘Is this too much hassle?’ I’m happy doing my own thing - I’m too long in the tooth now. “In terms of any future reunion, my answer would be 'no'." McKeown and fellow Bay City Roller Stuart Wood said there was no prospect of getting back together due to ill-feeling - in the wake of a failed comeback in 2016. “I just don’t have time for people like 'Woody' now," said McKeown. “The fans should forget about a reunion - it’s not going to happen,” said McKeown. McKeown reminisced about Bay City Rollers' band
LES McKeown in the centre mate Alan Longmuir, during his concert in Villamartin, paying tribute to the late band member, performing Rollers’ hits, including Shang a Lang, Saturday Night and Bye Bye Baby. McKeown, Wood and the late Longmuir were the only members of the Bay City Rollers to re-unite in 2015. It was reported that Longmuir called for the Rollers to rise above all the 'old rubbish' and come together - one last time - after his death in 2018. “From the bottom of my heart, I just can’t see another reunion happening," said Wood. “The only thing I would do it for would be to get a bigger pair of boots - and kick him (McKeown) even harder off the stage. “What happened was down to Les - being greedy and looking out for his own ends. "I wouldn’t put myself through that nonsense again,” said Wood.

The Council approved the twinning in a recent plenary session which according to the councillor responsible for the project, Rubén Pérez, has as its ultimate objective the joint organization of an annual international aeronautical fair that would take place alternately in the two cities, taking advantage of the facilities of the old San Javier airport.
Crisis in the Mar Menor as fishermen put away their nets
A similar informal group is already being used in Cabo Roig
San Pedro del Pinatar fishermen and the regional administration have agreed that there will be no fishing in the Mar Menor until the New Year, this after the collapse suffered by the Mar Menor a little over a week ago that caused the death of millions of fish and crustaceans.
Ponto do Sor houses several aeronautical industries, as well as an outstanding pilot school and an important airport. It also has a great deal of experience in running aeronautical fairs and is the headquarters of the Portugal Air Summit.
Launch of 2020 Solidarity Calendar
According to the president of the Fishermen's Association, Jesús Gómez, the Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and the Environment will pay 50 percent of the monies that they will lose as a result of the agreement.
For the 15th consecutive year a colourful solidarity calendar has been produced by local writer Andy Ormiston, and distributed to over 30 charities and organisations, enabling them to raise much needed funds. The calendars will be sold to the public or used in Raffles as prizes.
Gomez said that "there is no way can we fish because of the present situation, but my members still have to eat and pay their mortgages". The results of the analysis of the water is still not available
The agreement adopted in the Plenary will allow the twinning of the two cities which will then work on an exchange of experiences as they promote mutual cooperation “given the similarities that the two cities have and the importance placed by both on their aeronautical culture,” said Rubén Pérez.
Known as the Prevecom system, it was presented by the councillor for Police and Commerce, Federico Alarcón and Rosario Martínez, last week, along with representatives of the Guardia Civil and the Local Police. The system is intended to create several groups segmented by areas where participants can alert group members of risky situations and provide descriptions of suspects. A similar informal group was set up in Cabo Roig last year and has already shown encouraging results.
It has been financed thanks to the patronage of local businesses and branches of Alamo International, Aroca Seiquer lawyers, Atlas Insurance Agency, Currencies Direct, Brithol MAPFRE Insurance and Cambridge Global Payments. Once again this sought after publication will provide practical information about national and regional holidays and fiestas, cultural events, places to visit and useful telephone numbers, as well as U.K. and Irish Bank Holiday reminders. The launch will take place on Tuesday
San Javier to host a biennial aeronautical fair During these three months, the suspension will allow experts to determine the real extent of the damage that that the water without oxygen has done to the fishing grounds as well as allowing the stocks to begin their recovery. It is understood that the results of the analysis of the water that was collected in the sea following the mass mortality is still not available. If it shows that there is no contaminating substance, the ministry can begin a campaign to regain the trust of the public.
Following last year’s disappointing closure of San Javier Airport the project 'San Javier, city of the air' is continuing its recovery by twinning the coastal municipality with the Portuguese town of Ponto do Sor in the Alentejo region, an area that contains Beja airport and that also has a long association with the aeronautical industry. San Javier is twinning with the Portuguese town of Ponto do Sor The theme of the 2020 calendar is the Costa Blanca with lots of general information as well as a look at some of the incredible towns that make up this part of Spain where we live. As always there is space for writing notes and appointments on each page.
Fighting Crime through WhatsApp The Local Police and Guardia Civil are combining resources through a WhatsApp chat group, whereby retailers, hoteliers, taxi drivers and others with business interests can share information about suspicious or criminal behaviour in order to create a network of watchful eyes across the town.
The calendar on average raises over 8,000 euros for diverse needy causes each year and to date it has raised over 100,000 euros for charitable causes. The calendar launch will take place on Tuesday in the grounds of Aroca Seiquer lawyers in Punta Prima following which music will be provided by the Royal British Legion Concert Band.
Torrevieja already has one of the most advanced CCTV systems in the country, but nothing is more useful than people on the ground keeping watch, and that is what the group aims to achieve.

But isn’t it a two-tier world we live in?
A
s this column may have previously mentioned, ‘sport mirrors life.’
With not a lot happening on the playing fields at the moment, the chattering classes are preoccupied with off-field activities; namely the introduction of the two-tier system into Gaelic Football. This move is nothing more than common sense and why a quarter of the two-tier counties involved are set against its introduction is beyond comprehension. Is it not better to compete against counties of similar standard than to be ‘slaughtered’ by the likes of Dublin or Kerry? Starting from next year, all teams currently playing in Division 3 or 4 of the league will take part in a separate championship. In every sport there is grading – mostly self-regulated as teams win and lose and move up or down the pecking system. All any team has to do, in any sport, is to keep on beating what’s in front of them and that’s how you move into the top tier. Obviously some GAA counties feel there is an easier, softer way of doing it. Most of us know it is almost impossible to start at the top Look at how well the tiered system works for English soccer? Teams and individual sports people need to start off playing at their own level. When I played league squash, there weren’t two tiers – but four tiers. (Modesty prohibits me from answering the question being shouted from the stands – as in newsstands!) Shane Lowry didn’t start off playing golf in ‘tier-one’ where he now excels. He just got on with ‘beating whatever was in front of him.’ Now, let us accept that in sport, as in life, it is not fair. Some counties have a distinct advantage by way of financial resources and population base. But when a team goes out on the field it is fifteen against fifteen and the playing pitch is now a level one. One of my great sporting tingles is the memory of the 2004 Leinster

Anyway, back to sport mirroring life. On this planet the only place that people are equal is in the eyes of God. In an ideal world, we would all be equal players and all taking part in tier-one living. But this is not the way the thing works out or how society operates. We live in a two-tier world and those born into the second tier have to be able to play better than tier-one players in order to win their way. In life as well as in sport, it is possibly to get out of tier-two but it isn’t easy. Tier-one players start life with a decided advantage. (Similar to Dublin footballers) Their parents have more money, know all the short cuts and they are born with the expectations of success. Tier-one players will go to expensive schools and then no question about going on to university. Their back-room team will know the ‘go to people’ so that their charges can play in their chosen position.
Playing in tier-two, she will learn more cop-on in that first year than will her silver-spooned, tier-one, competitor in all of her college days. Promotion to the higher tier of life doesn’t look so daunting anymore. Life may be unfair – but there are equalisers along its path. So now let those moaning tier-two footballers get on with it and accept that all they have to do to get to where they claim they should be, is just to be better than whatever is in front of them!
As against the above, your second-tier under-age players will start with no advantages other than drive and natural ability. They will have to overcome disadvantages and clear many hurdles if they want to be in tier-one – but it is being done all the time. The first point to be scored has to do with acquiring strong motivation and self-belief. He or she will live frugally and study hard. He could work on the buildings during his summer holidays. She may seek a job in an Irish pub in Spain.
*Author, entrepreneur and newspaper columnist, Bernie Comaskey, now spends most of his time on a farm in Ireland; but he retains his strong links with the Costa Blanca.
The important fact is that this young player is now in the game. Instead of whining and wailing at the imperfections and inadequacies of the two-tiered system, the player realises that all he has to do is keep on beating whatever is in front of him – one at a time.
Bernie has published four books; ‘If Ever a Man Suffered’, ‘The Best of Bernie’, ‘The Team’, and ‘Just Between Ourselves’. Bernie’s books are available at half price, on sale from ‘The Leader.’ Call 637 227 385 for info.
Thousands of sheep flocked to Spain's capital, to the sounds of singing, dancing and music. Similar scenes were seen in years gone by in Preston, whose name is derived from the Old English meaning Priest's settlement. In the Domesday Book of 1086 it is recorded as Prestune. The City's Coat of Arms is of a sheep, with the initials PP, derived of Proud Preston. Preston is one of the world's biggest cotton manufacturers of yesteryear. Being granted the Freedom of the Borough enables you to take sheep through the City centre, similar to that of Spain's ceremony. Only 23 people have the honour of the Freedom of the Borough in Preston in the last century. Preston born Nick Park, creator of Shaun the Sheep, the film that Premiered in 2015, was presented with the honour in 1997.
The late Sir Tom Finney, former England and Preston North End footballer, was given the Honour of Freeman in 1979. Ex-England cricketer Andrew Flintoff was given the Freedom of Preston in 2005, when Councillors voted unanimously in favour of the Preston born star becoming an Honorary Freeman.

Threat to survival of dolphins in Mediterranean By Andrew Atkinson Dolphins face one of their biggest threats of survival in the Mediterranean - following a deadly virus returning. Morbillivirus - a pathogen - present in the nineties that claimed over a 1,000 dolphins, has been found present once again. The cetaceans are a major danger to Bottlenose dolphins. A new strain of the virus, that also struck in 2007 and 2011, was discovered in 2012, pinpointed from the Atlantic Ocean. Since, Dolphins have been struck down with the virus in Valencia and in Sicily. Scientists are baffled as to where the origin of Morbillivirus comes from. But researchers from the Oceanogràfic Foundation point to pollution.
Pollutants in the sea cause the dolphin's immune system to weaken. Consuelo Rubio-Guerri, Research Coordinator of the Oceanogràfic Foundation said the outbreaks occurred after levels of sea pollution rose. Toxins are the main hypothesis, according to scientists as the Mediterranean suffers from spillages from cruise ships, underlining the current high toxic levels. The virus enters the respiratory tract, into the lungs, and brain, causing deathof dolphins. Neurological damage causes seizure. Threats to cetaceans in the Mediterranean arise due to overfishing - with a lack of food. Investigations have discovered dolphins have been caught, via ropes, looped onto fins, then returned to sea. There are concerns amongst scientists on juvenile dolphins, following the virus returning. Juvenile dolphins' deaths occurred, after taking their mother's milk, in viral epidemics that have occurred. The dolphin species endangerment survival in the Mediterranean is of a grave concern. “The vaccine is not viable, because if we develop it, the really difficult thing would be to give it to the animals. "There are oral vaccines that have been used for wild boars, but it is much more complicated to apply this idea at sea," said Rubio-Guerri. Research and studies into how the virus acts will continue, with the hope to predict if there is going to be an epidemic, or to know how it will behave in the future.

Algorfa resident loses everything in Gota Fria IN a special Costa Blanca and Costa Calida Leader report Andrew Atkinson talks Exclusively with Algorfa resident Sarah Broadbent, whose house was destroyed in last month's Gota Fria flooding.
What’s left of my home is open to thieves And at present Sarah says that permission to start rebuilding has not been given by authorities. Many personal belongings have been lost and Sarah said: "Some things just cannot be replaced." Following the Gota Fria storms - the biggest storms in 150 years - Sarah has been left heartbroken, after ashes from inlaws were lost in the flooding. Along with losing a plethora of personal items, Sarah was left heartbroken, when her in-laws ashes were washed away. ALGORFA was one of the hardest hit town's in the Vega Baja region that suffered devastating circumstances in September's Gota Fria. "This is my house - the yellow one," devastated Sarah Broadbent from Algorfa told me, pointing to her house that is destroyed. A scene not seen within the Vega Baja region in over a century has left many families homeless, along with the loss of everything they possessed. "The damage caused is going to take years to repair - I have lost everything," said tearful Sarah. The Government has announced a 5million euros package to help rebuild the damage caused, with the Vega Baja regions to benefit from the funding. However no timescale has been given, as to when Sarah will be able to return to her home.
"My in-laws ashes, that we needed to scatter, were lost," said Stourbridge born Sarah. Following the road between Algorfa and Almoradi being reopened, the aftermath and devastation the Gota Fria left behind is horrific and tragic, for those affected. And, shockingly, robbers have been active in stealing items from properties damaged by the flooding.

La Siesta fought like the prospectors they are but the Geckos stood their ground, came back hard, and ran out with a very respectable draw 7-7. The shots went the way of the Geckos with 117 to them and 99 to La Siesta. So a very tough match and a very fair result. Also on Friday the Cubs travelled to Emerald Isle to play against the Roundheads and picked up their first points of the season with George Burrage ,Craig Dyson & Sandra McIlroy winning with 6 shots up. Well done guys. Three other rinks were close and unfortunately 2 rinks went down with a bang! Result 12- 2 to the Roundheads.
La Siesta were above the geckos and definitely came looking for treasure!
Well done to Emerald Isle.
The Geckos however are never easy pickings as La Siesta found out as the game developed into a battle royal.

El Rancho Bowls Club Our week started with a home match for the Pintos against Emerald Isle Moonrakers, with the threatened rain turning out to be just a few drops, though there was a cool breeze causing quite a few to keep their jackets on for the first occasion of the season. A few of the Moonrakers seemed to struggle with the speed and width of the mat, but almost all took it in good heart and knowing that their revenge will come at Emerald Isle and it is just a game. The Pintos did however take the upper hand, taking the rinks by 5 to 1. Judy Foley, Liam Foley and Jim Gracie 30-9. Irene Thomson, Sarah Taylor and Eddie Thomson 37-10. Ann C Taylor, Denise Morgan and Bob Morgan 38-7. Barbara Jones, Malc Sykes and Bob Taylor 42-5. Geoff Jones, Diane Yates and Richard Lee 30-7. Val Ryder, Jim Taylor and Henry Ryder 19-23. Meanwhile the Raiders were at Country Bowls playing the Flamingos, who proved to be a little too strong for the Raiders on the day. The Raiders took one rink and lost another by just one shot and hopefully enjoyed the match and company. Friday morning found the Broncos at home to Greenlands Elms and put in a very creditable performance in drawing the rinks 3 all. Gaynor John, Debbie Ham and Brian Harris 18-16. Dolly Ford, Ann Abbott and Adrian Ham 16-32. Bryan John, Gill Bartlett and Rob Clark 24-18. Brian Gilham, Chris Ziepe and John Ziepe 13-15. Tony Abbott, Gary Dunstone and David Wright 19-14. Peter Blackburn, Paul Durham and Keith Longshaw 6-31. In the afternoon The Mustangs were at San Luis playing The Lions, a tough match but enjoyed the company, a splendid afternoon. We came away with one rink and a draw, not a bad result at San Luis. For information contact Sheila Cox at micksheilacox@gmail.com

Quesada Bowls Club by Jim Donnelly We had mixed results this week, but there are a number of points in our favour. I believe there has never been 3 consecutive 14 – 0 results. Swans came very close to that only losing on one rink by a narrow margin. South Alicante Winter Triples - Diamonds were at home to Monte Mar matadors, winning on 4 rinks and losing two. They also took the overall shots, winning by 10 points to 4 Pearls away at La Siesta Apollos, only winning on 2 rinks. Southern League - Swans were at home to Emerald Isle Roundheads. The roundheads only managed to field 5 rinks. Swans won four rinks, lost one and one walkover, meaning they took the game 12-2. Winter League - Disappointing. 2 wins and 3 losses although Paul Parkes team nearly won. Well done Jason's team and Suzi's team, Suzi's team have won 3 out of 4 and Jason's team is unbeaten so far. Quesada bowls club welcomes both new and experienced bowlers. We are a friendly club with a mixture of competition, league and casual bowlers. In addition to league matches and club competitions, we have our popular Saturday chicken drive, and Tuesday bubble drive which is open to visitors. So come along and see what we have to offer! Some impressive scoring from Joe Miller and John Eyre put the Legends under pressure earlier in the match, although Terry David 119 and Barry Shingler D3 bagged the second triple. A D9 from Paul Durrant made it 1-2 to complete the threes. Miller 122, 140 and Taylor D4,D16, extended the lead, their opponents Rouzee and David unable to capitalise on their heavy scoring. Shingler and Sandra David both found the T20 an easy target, pulling one back for the Legends.

Gino Rouzee and the Legends entertained the Hub in the salubrious surroundings of High Life. Some pretty decent darts were thrown by both sides, but it was the Hyenas who edged the result by way of Bob Taylor in the tenth defeating the very capable Sandra Crabb 0-2 on D8, who managed her first maximum, unfortunately it was in the warm up. l'm sure however, it won't be the last for the diminutive Legend.

Pint Depot Queens failed to capitalise on a 5-1 half time lead, managing just one more leg in the singles. All credit however to the Chicks from Chemies, who must have envisaged a real away drubbing with six to play, however, five of the six went their way to earn a well deserved draw. Maggie Morgan D12, Lorraine Cox D16 and Morgan D18 opened the Queens account in the triples, Ronnie Bowden D5 making it four to nothing in the first pair, before Chick Sue Collins D1, halted the slide. Cox D8 returned the hosts to winning ways for a 5-1 half time scoreline. The refreshments somehow rejuvenated the subdued Chicks as they reeled off the first four singles to level at five apiece, through Andrea Kelly D3, Kerry Shopland D11, Nikki Dean D8 and Hennie Oortwijn D1. Morgan captured the eleventh leg on D1, ensuring at least a point for the hosts, leaving Marie Cummins to face visiting Chick , Collins for the win or draw. MOTM Collins nailed D20 for shared points, Bowden earning her honor for the Queens.
Eyre and Durrant shared four tons, each finding D16 for 0-2, Roger Phipps pounding the T19 with 95,133,95,85 to no avail against the formidable duo. Alex Nikolov gained the vital sixth leg and point for the visitors, followed by Taylor's win. Durrant made it eight in the penultimate game facing the useful Rouzee taking out the leagues highest finish to date, a tasty 156, T20,T20,D18, for the first and D8 for 0-2. Shingler reduced the deficit in the closing game in a real tussle with Eyre on D4 for 2-1. Shingler and Phipps couldn't be separated for the MOTM, Durrant nominated for the Hub. El Capitan arrived on time to be faced by a formidable line up of darting legends- van Gerwin, Taylor, Lewis in the first triples, Wade, Anderson and Cross in the second. The Tiaras were already 6 legs up before the chaps arrived so it looked like it was going to be a good contest until the opposition insisted we wiped the score board clean and start from scratch, spoil sports! The Tiaras barely got a look in, despite a few good scores, there’s just no arguing with streams of 100+’s from the league-toppers. It was only Princess Elizabeth Cowan that showed any true spunk, scoring 140 and 2 tuns to take a single leg off Ed Klimonis in her singles, earning her MOTM. Junior Klimonis, Aroldas, was awarded the same for his 105 check-out. The Three T’s made the short journey to the Plaza to take on old friends – the Alehouse. Traditionally this has been a close run affair and Wednesday’s meeting was no exception. The first match was going well for the Toppers who wanted D20 when up stepped the
This weeks " Spot " is recently relocated Cameron Nesbitt, the larger than life licensee of C.C.'s bar, La Zenia. lncidentally, the other " C " of their name comes from wife of sixteen years, Claire. The popular couple have been esconsed in Spain for just twelve months, investing in the bar / restaurant after Cameron decided enough was enough following 25 years of service as manager of an " Iceland " depot in Kent, UK. Three young sons of 14, 11 and 8 years occupy much of any spare time remaining. Cameron attended the same Dartford grammar school as the infamous Rolling Stone, Mick Jagger, unfortunately his guitar and song writing skills weren't up to scratch and Keith Richard replaced him. Originally from Greenwich, the couple realised their ambition of a Spanish bar opening C.C.'s in January this year. Now boasting 4 dartboards, the intention is to run regular monthly Saturday competitions starting November. lnjury curtailed Cameron's aspirations of a rugby career, efforts now directed to customer satisfaction, hosting a Friday quiz, Saturday live entertainment and a traditional Sunday lunch. Good luck to both. balletic Andre Wing who polished off 99 – 1 up to the Alehouse. The first half of the match then ebbed and flowed with some steady if unspectacular darts leaving the score 3 all at the break. The singles began well for the Toppers with good wins by Graham Solomon and Lee Maiden giving the away side a 5 – 3 lead. Almost immediately new signing Dario Sierra brought the home side right back into contention with a good win over in-form Andy Gildea. This was followed up by two more home victories by Alan Havelock and bar owner, captain and all round good bloke Karl Mallinson. So 6 – 5 to the home side and all to play for and onto the stage stepped two of the most eccentric – in the nicest possible way – players in the league – Andre Wing and Baz Schoffield. The game was nip and tuck with good and really bad scoring adding to the tension but it was Baz ‘thanks for popping in’ Schoffield who prevailed to leave the result 6 apiece. Good company , good darts and a good night out. Committee member ( at the moment ) Sid Cross offers his sincere apologies to the San Miguel Bullies for losing the result sheet, therefore no match report. A quick call to confirm the Pirates loss, quelled ever growing rumours of match fixing from the larger than life Sidcup fugitive Cross.

October Competition Jackie Breslin writes ..Well where do I start with this months report? The weather was ideal for fishing with just a little gentle breeze, a full compliment of 14 anglers competed.....there ends the good news. With only 12 fish caught this was our worst result since we started the competition back last October, the only logical reason we can come up with was that on the previous day 21 pleasure anglers fished the venue......far too many for such a smallish lake....and the fish probably had enough food to last them a week, theres not a lot we can do about this as we dont control the water. However this was an exceptional number for a normal Friday which usually has maxinium of 7 fishing. Nico the owner was informed of our thoughts and he has said that he will make sure that this does not happen again......lets wait and see. There was some concern on how I laid out the 14 pegs and it was suggested that we would be better with 7 pegs a side and none an the crossover.....this will be in place for the next competition. October results: Terry Screen - peg 13, 6.86kgs Alan Priest - peg 4, 6.22kgs, Ian Brown - peg 2, 4.68kgs, Tony - peg 12, 2.70kgs. The winners in our pairs competition were Ian and Tony with a combined weight of 7.38 kgs closely folowed by Terry and Russell with 6.86 kgs. The November competition will be on Saturday 9th, drawing for pegs will be 9.00 fishing 10.00 to1.00 half hour for lunch then fishing 1.30 till 4.30. Entry is 10â‚Ź with includes a snack lunch.

720 years & Southampton Old Bowling Green rolls on! MARGARET Hirst from San Miguel, who plays bowls at Greenlands, Los Montesinos, talks about Southampton Old Bowling Green, deemed the oldest bowling green in the world, circa.1299. Knighthoods are not usually linked with playing bowls - but Southampton Old Bowling Green have a unique annual 'Knighthood' competition. Held annually, members - Gentlemen commoners - compete, with the winner being awarded the title of Knight of the green and becoming a sir. "The green was first used in 1299," said Margaret, who splits her year between Spain and Cowes, Isle of Wight. "The Southampton Old Bowling Green was established during the reign of Richard I, and first used for a game of bowls in 1299," said Margaret, who has played at the Lower Canal Walk and Platform Road club. The current club have been established since the 17th century, with records of the history of the 'Knighthood' competition. "It is also the only club that has a 'Master' in charge - a title carried forward from the early days," said Margaret, who plays bowls at Plessey in Cowes and at Greenlands, Los Montesinos. The 'Knighthood' competition features gentlemen commoners, who compete to obtain seven points, adjudicated by the members who have previously
Carp R Us Fishing is a strange sport in that on some days the fish just don’t want to take part, no matter how hard the angler tries. won the competition. The adjudicators - Knights - adjudicate in top hats and frocked tails suits. Winners are not permitted to compete again in future 'Knighthood' competitions, of which rules are different from the normal variant of bowls. "The game is played 'Roving Jack' style - the jack is placed on a penny, anywhere on the green," said Margaret. If the penny it partially covered by the bowl, it is a toucher; if totally covered it is a lodger. Margaret, 81, said: "It is recorded the competition has been known to last 10 days to become a Knight!." In 2019 it was the 245th staging of the Knighthood competition. The record book shows Tom Nicol, ex-Burnley and Southampton footballer, received his Knighthood in 1907, the 133rd Championship.

The 8th International Open "City of Torrevieja" culminated in Ozone Bowling on Sunday in a round-robin final between the eight best players of the tournament.
In the round-robin matches, each victory gave 30 bonus points. The strength of Ildemaro Ruiz was his consistency. Although losing three of his seven matches, he continued throwing lots of strikes, his low game being a very acceptable 215 and his high game an excellent 259.
At the end of the clashes, the leaderboard was topped by Ildemaro Ruiz, a professional player of the American PBA Tour. Lorenzo Quereda of Club Eurobowling Torrevieja and director of Ozone Bowling was proclaimed runner-up.
The bowler who won the most matches was Lorenzo Quereda, six of seven. In the last game, a thrilling fight for third place was seen between the Finns Petri Keituri and Sami Konsteri, the latter being the luckiest in the very last frame.
The Finn Sami Konsteri, champion of the tournament in 2016, clawed up to conquer third place.
In the "amateur" categories B and C, awards were given directly without a final. Teresa Barriopedro of Madrid´s Capital Bowling won Category B with an average of 201.83 and Seppo Tuominen of Euro bowling Torrevieja won Category C with 196.33.
The level of the tournament was very high. After the qualifying phase, during which six-game series were played, the cut to the finals rose to 1293 pins, an average of 215.50 per game. The first final step, with 32 players on the lanes, began early on Sunday. After the initial four games, the top-16 bowled another four games, building on the previous score, to decide the final group of eight “survivors”. They were Sami Konsteri, FIN, with an
In comparison with 2018, the number of participants showed a growth of 25%, with more than 50% of the entries coming from other countries. This fact was carefully noted by the Town Hall, represented at the awards ceremony by the Councilor of Foreign Residents, Gitte Lund.

The Zozo Championships are currently being held in Japan and rather uniquely some of the holes have two greens and in the pretournament skins game it was left to the player to decide which green they played to.
If you think about it there are a number of good reasons to have double the greens in that there is only half of the wear and tear and no need to reduce and discount prices during hollow tining periods and frees up one green per hole for renovation or maintenance and provides variation for the members not playing exactly the same hole each time. There is of course a down side because double the number of greens means twice the maintenance which in turn increases the costs for the golf course owners. Still it is good to see someone trying something different. Thader lose local bragging rights
Do some golf holes have two greens?
This is apparently a common occurrence on Japanese courses because their summers are hot and humid and their winters cold so they would have Bermuda grass for the winter greens and Bent grass for the summer greens therefore allowing almost all year round uninterrupted golf.

Thader can have no complaints at losing this vega baja local derby preferente league fixture inside Sadrian stadium. Fresh from a moral boosting victory over high flying Villajoyosa, they undid all their hard work, going down in this mainly scrappy encounter. Missing the injured Rafa, plus newly wed Nino, was a big blow which Thader never really seemed to come to terms with. For the umpteenth time, they allowed the opposition an early opener, and although parity was restored before half time, Almoradi were in control for most of the 2nd half. A well worked move between Luis Carlos and Saul on 9 mins, resulted in the latter placing his shot beyond visiting keeper Sergio's despairing dive. Apart from a booking apiece, neither side created note worthy incidents, until a Rafa Gomez corner was headed off the line on 32

mins. From the next attack, a decent shout for handball failed to result in a Thader penalty. Thader were by now bossing procedings, and when a Rafa Gomez assist found Calderon, he drilled it low and hard from 10 yards for a well deserved equalizer. On 39 mins, Jose Manuel thought he had put Thader ahead, but alas a linesman flag ruled out a goal for offside. Straight from the restart, a long distance Lloyd free kick was tipped over the bar by Almoradi keeper Josete. Saul came close to adding to his tally on 49 mins, but his goalbound effort was brilliantly tipped aside by Sergio, then from resultant corner, Thader's keeper again came to the rescue. On the hour mark, a fine individual effort by Rafa G culminated in his shot being well saved. From the rebound, a clear foul prevented him reaching the ball, but although in a good position, the ref chose to wave play on, instead of awarding a certain penalty. SMGS at Vistabella. 23 Oct 2019 A shotgun start at 9 a.m. (without the shotgun it seemed, at least from the distant hole 17 tee box) saw 37 members and 5 guests take on a course that has become a permanent SMGS monthly fixture. The Monday night and Tuesday day rains had done little damage. Only bunkers remained sodden, and waste areas appeared to have suffered even further damage following their littering with rivulets during September’s DANA. DANA 2 was substantially more respectful than its predecessor. The damp conditions did, though, mean that buggies were not allowed on fairways, which meant a few members had to drop out. This seems a shame as we all look forward to our Wednesday’s with SMGS, and one wonders why, especially on the 11 old holes, it was not possible to enter fairways at right angles from the cart paths. The course had drained really well and quickly, and this could, one feels, have been accommodated. Concerning the actual golf, as always at this course some great scores were posted. Mike Greatorex led the way with a superb 41 points, closely followed by guest Lee Parsons with 40, and Keith Wickham with 39. This author paused alongside the par 3 11 th to watch a spectacular off-green holing by the latter. Having been beaten by him in the relevant category, perhaps the buggy should have been revved up at the moment just before contact. It would have made little difference.
