rihuela’s Court of Instruction number 3 has reopened the investigation into the disappearance of 20 year old Henry Alejandro Jiménez who went missing from his home on New Year’s Day 14 months ago.
Although the Guardia Civil closed the case due to ‘lack of evidence,’ his brother Andrés has said that it has now been reopened because there are new lines of investigation. Just last week the family and friends of Henry Alejandro
gathered outside the Orihuela Palace of Justice to “make the case more visible” because, according to Henry’s mother, the Civil Guard Commander in Pilar de la Horadada, who has been running the investigation, has not done everything possible to examine the disappear-
ance or the evidence. "There are many things that have not been investigated including statements from many of the people who spent New Year's Eve with Henry in his home at a party. Continued on Page 2

Henry Alejandro Jiménez disappeared on 1 January 2019 at 6 am from his home in the urbanisation of Las Chismosas, in Orihuela Costa, after spending New Year's Eve with at least nine of his friends and being attacked by his housemate. Since then, over fourteen months have passed and there is no clue as to the whereabouts of the young man who was 20 years of age at the time of his disappearance.

Two arrested for arson in Los Montesinos The Civil Guard has arrested two men in Los Montesinos as the alleged perpetrators of a crime of arson. It is thought their intention was to burn out a vehicle but the fire quickly spread to two more cars and then into a block of apartments, which required all of the residents to be evacuated.
The detainees, a Spaniard and a Romanian, both aged 30, were arrested by the Guardia Civil but subsequently released on bail and are currently awaiting trial. They were detained following information from a witness who saw them both taking an unusually keen interest at the scene of the fire before driving

The Brotherhood of Moors and Christians will also parade
“Full Gre en ahead” for St P atric ks Da y Centenary Parade in Cab o Roig One of the biggest St Patrick’s Day Celebrations in the entire world will take place in Cabo Roig on Sunday afternoon launching the start of three days of Festivities on the Orihuela Costa. According to local police almost 20,000 people attended the event last year so the 2020 parade, the tenth anniversary of the Cabo Roig celebration, is set to be even busier as it welcomes almost thirty floats, troupes and displays to the huge spectacle. The local committee, made up of a dozen or so businessmen and women from the area, has been hard at work for most of the last year, with, in recent weeks, many of the bars and restaurants running fundraising activities to offer their support. Indeed during this coming week two of the bars will be running events of their own. On Thursday O’Riordans will be hosting one of their popular Race Nights while the following evening Milo’s Bar will be holding their annual Ladies Day with cava and finger food available on arrival, followed by entertainment appropriate to the Ladies, which is scheduled to get underway from 9pm. Both events are raising funds to support the parade appeal so please try to get along to either or both and show your support to the two bars in question. Also on Friday evening the formal launch of the festivities will be hosted by the Parade Committee and the Orihuela Town Hall in the Casino situated in Zenia Boulevard where the Grand Marshall, the
living GAA legend Séamus Darby, will also be welcomed to the area. With final preparations being made this week around the Cabo Roig strip the bunting team start their work on Monday morning under the direction of Jimmy Kiernan. We can also expect the council to move in with their street cleaners. This is usually the one time in the year when the area gets its long overdue ‘makeover’. On Sunday itself the events get underway at 1pm, with kids’ activities and face-painting while BIG FM will be hosting their live St Patrick’s Day outside broadcast from the stage area in Calle del Mar with FRESH FM broadcasting from the top of the strip outside Sabadell Bank. There will also be a display of classic cars, motorcycles and scooters during the hour leading up to the start. Following traditional speeches and welcomes, also from the stage area, at 2.45 pm, the parade will get underway at 3:00 pm from the Aguamarina Urbanisation in Calle Agua. The route will take it along Calle del Mar to the Medical Centre where it will turn down the front of the strip, into Calle Cielo and then back to the original start point where it will end. The parade will be led by the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums followed by dignitaries and guests including the Grand Marshal together with the mayors of Orihuela and Torrevieja, Emilio Bascuñana and Eduardo Dolón. Snr Dolón is also the Vice President of the Diputación de Alicante. Over 50 members of the Moors and Christians Brotherhoods will also take part in the parade as special guests. Do bear in mind that parking will be at a premium with much of the area closed by police from 1pm so for your own convenience please ensure that to arrive and take up your positions nice and early and then settle down to enjoy an afternoon of fine Irish companionship and entertainment.

"After arriving at Paul's casa we went out for dinner," said Tony, who sold the Calpe Rock Shop in 1998. Fellow Prestonian Tony said East End gangster Ronnie Knight re-visited his shop in Calpe - to buy some imported Blackpool rock! "Ronnie re-visited the shop and asked for a bag of Blackpool rock for himself, and for Freddie Foreman, who was living in Marbella," said Tony. Freddie Foreman served nine years for his part in the £6m bullion robbery. On his time selling Blackpool rock, entertainer and Charity events organiser Tony said: "The Spanish couldn't get their head around Blackpool rock - with the name Calpe running all the way through it!

Two decades after selling his Calpe Rock Shop, Tony Slater smiles, as he recalls the days when gangster Ronnie Knight, ex-husband of Barbara Windsor, jailed for seven years for his part in the Security Express £6m bullion robbery in 1983, paid him a visit. Tony, who befriended comedian/impressionist Paul Melba during his time in Spain, said: "Paul arranged for Ronnie Knight to pop into the shop, and from Calpe we then went to his casa. "It was at the height of him being splashed all over the media - linked with the £6m bullion robbery,"
"They were amazed, everytime they bit a chunk or snapped a piece off, the name Calpe was there. "The only downside of selling rock in Spain was the hot climate - it melted in the heat!," Tony laughed. "They were glamorous times." Coronavirus conspiracy theory too close for comfort!
The symptoms and behaviour of Koontz’s “Wuhan-400” are very different to COVID-19. In the novel, the virus has an incubation period of “only four hours”. COVID-19’s incubation period is between 1-14 days. According to the World Health Organisation the most common incubation time is approximately five days.
By Andrew Atkinson
COVID-19’s death rate, according to the WHO, the case-fatality rate is between 2% and 4% in Wuhan and 0.7% outside Wuhan.
A question mark hangs over the prediction - made in 1981 - by author Dean Koontz that a Coronavirus outbreak would take place during 2019-20.
The symptoms described by Koontz are different to COVID-19. In his novel, “Wuhan-400” causes the secretion of a “toxin that literally eats away brain tissue” causing loss of control of bodily function. “The victim simply ceases to have a pulse, functioning organs, or any urge to breathe”, writes Koontz.
In his book “The Eyes of Darkness” Koontz describes the coronavirus - mentioning a virus called “Wuhan-400”. The coronavirus outbreak begun in Wuhan, China. Koontz wrote about a fictional virus and its name “Wuhan-400” refers the Chinese city in which the 2019 Coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19) started. However, the illness in his book doesn’t share any other traits with COVID-19. Koontz described “Wuhan-400” as “China’s most important and dangerous: new biological weapon in a decade”. He also wrote it was developed by labs outside of the city of Wuhan. No proof has materialised that the new coronavirus was created in a laboratory but is believed to have originated in 2019 - in a food market in Wuhan - illegally selling wildlife. Health experts have said it could originate in bats - passed to humans, possibly via another species. Snakes have also been flagged up as the cause.

Koontz describes “Wuhan-400” as a disease with a kill-rate of a 100%. Once infected, no one lives more than 24 hours. Most die in twelve, he wrote.
COVID-19 infections have a wide range of symptoms, including fever, coughing, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. Mild cases can cause cold-like symptoms, while severe cases can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory illness, kidney failure and death. In the first edition of “The Eyes of Darkness” in 1981, the fictional virus was not named after the Chinese city, but after a Russian locality named “Gorki” (Gorki-400). In the original version of the novel, the virus was developed outside of “Gorki” and it was meant to be the “Soviet’s most important, dangerous new biological weapon in the decade”. Dean Koontz did write about a fictional virus called “Wuhan-400” in the 1989 re-release of his 1981 novel “The Eyes of Darkness”, but symptoms and effects of the disease do not match the official description of COVID-19.

An unwelcome Spanish Visitor
O
urs is a hospitable home. This is no more than adhering to an age-old tradition in Ireland of making people welcome and putting them up for the night if needs be. Mrs Youcantbeserious and I have guested people from Canada and America – some of whom we didn’t even know beforehand. This reminds me that my brother owes me a lot of money on account of my kind heart. Fehin had a business in Canada, at a time when I owned a bar in Mullingar. When Fehin met somebody who told him they were heading for Ireland, he put his hand in his pocket, (you thought I was going to say he gave them money?) took out a business card and wrote on the back of it, ‘entitles bearer to one free pint’ in MY bar! What could I do? The memory is causing me to lose my way here (stop it …Lads!) … where was I? Oh, yes … visitors. After opening Paddy’s Point in 1999, we naturally made quite a few Spanish friends. They were all great people and several did come and stay with us in Ireland: as did also many Irish and British friends we made there. It was always particularly pleasurable when former staff members came to see us. Telling you the above is solely to set the scene to complain about a Spanish visitor we had last week … someone whom I never wish to see again. Firstly, he was not invited, gate-crashed our home and even after that, he overstated his welcome by a further two days. He was totally out of control and the first trouble he caused was to have his plane diverted from Dublin to Belfast. From there, he left a total trail of destruction in his wake. The guy’s name was Jorge. He got on the wrong side of my neighbours as well. I was the only one around who could spell and pronounce Jorge’s name. This is because I met so many nice Jorges during my years in Spain. This guy was not one of them. Jorge’s full name (so that you might be able to avoid him if he calls) is Jorge Tormenta – or ‘Jorge Storm’ in English. The correct translation is ‘Storm Jorge.’
Monday 9th - Sunday 15th March, 2020
When Jorge could think of nothing better to amuse himself with; he kicked our bins around the yard, opened a field gate to let the cattle where they shouldn’t be, knocked two old tree – which were just standing the, minding their own business, and after he marooned a lady from down the road at her daughter’s in Dublin, he took her clothes line with all her undies, and made a flag-pole from the telephone pole outside my house.

VISIT to the village of Kunta Kinteh was made by Rosemary, based on the well known slave, whose story was made famous in Literature by Alex Haley's book 'Roots'.
"No visit to The Gambia would be complete, without visiting a local school for young children. Whilst education is now available to all children, there is still a shortage of writing materials and books," said Rosemary. On a trip to a local woodcraft market, schoolchildren pushed parts

JORGE WAS NOT INVITED, gate-crashed our home and overstayed his welcome by two days.
Storm Jorge blew winds of nearly a hundred miles an hour, lashed us with rain, sleet and snow and flooded most of the country. There is an actual video, showing the Spanish invader turning over a massive truck on the N59 in County Galway. We wouldn’t have known who Jorge Tormenta was only for he was outed by the Spanish Met Office. Thanks for nothing, lads …! This column believes that the Spanish are getting their own back for what happened here in 1588. King Philip sent us the Spanish Armada to help drive out the English. The ships anchored off Kilrush, in County Clare, as a dreadful storm blew and blew. The tempest raged for days and the sailors were hungry – and I suppose you might say, ‘fed-up.’ Six ships sailed away unscathed, but three vessels and their crews ran aground on the rocks at where is since known as ‘Spanish Point.’ Half drowned and malnourished, the Spaniards were in no mood for a scrap. This didn’t save the unfortunate sailors: Not only were they attacked by the English soldiers, but for whatever reason, the Irish forces turned on them as well. Every cloud has a silver lining and so it came to pass for the Spanish buckos lucky enough to survive Spanish Point. We have to tell it like it was ‘and shame the devil’! The girls had never encountered anything as exotic as the Spaniards. The result being that the Jorges of the day impregnated half the women of the ‘Banner County’. If you don’t believe me, study the features of the next Clare man you meet!

"Two of these we kept. We made contact, on our return home, and Kemo subsequently made contact with both boys, and we met on the beach. "We told them we would come again and would like to bring them a personal gift. One told us a briefcase, in which to keep his schoolbooks, would be useful. "And, an alarm clock, as he had problems waking up in the morning. The other wanted trainers, as he walked barefoot. "Imagine their joy, next time, when we handed over these items," reflected Rosemary. Today, both boys are in their mid-thirties, married and with at least one child of their own, maybe more. One followed an Academic life and travelled, before returning home to The Gambia; whilst the other took to manual work, assisting in his brother's garage for a while and now working in construction. Rosemary purchased a property in 2002 in the Urbanisation of Monte Azul, Quesada, Rojales, and was told never to keep documents in the house, when unattended. A handbag with many zip-up compartments was stolen and Rosemary lost €1,000 from credit and Bank cards, passports, driving licences, address book, mobile phone. "None of it was recovered and financially we were not in a position to journey back to The Gambia to find our 'lost' friends - although they remained in our hearts," said Rosemary. In the pursuing years, Rosemary received a friend request from one of the Gambian lads, then the other: "It occurred to me that our friend Kemo may be available, via social media, but despite a search, he seemed to have disappeared. "I wrote to him, c/o the Atlantic Hotel, but never received a
reply. I was informed that the new owners replaced all the staff and guides. "To this day, my search has been unsuccessful, either for Kemo or members of his family. Even our Gambia friends have tried to find him for us," said Rosemary. After 14 years in Spain, Rosemary and husband Steve returned to Guernsey. Two years ago Rosemary went on holiday to The Gambia to find it had evolved into a modern, vibrant, and in parts, prosperous country, around the main towns, with markets as busy as ever. "We are in touch with Malick and Foday, two schoolboys we met on our first trip. "Kemo, and his wife Hawa lost their first child Ma-bintou, who as mentioned, died of malaria. "Two sons were later born, Talibo in 2001 and Mohammed Lamin in 2003, whose compound was near Serrekunda," said Rosemary, returning to the Gambia, Kotu, later this year. "It is sad that we may never know what has happened to Kemo and his family. "But can rejoice the two young lads, who thrust a piece of paper into our hands 20 years ago, have stayed our friends and are now living well", said Rosemary.

Combatting Loneliness through TRBL in Spain
As
The Royal British Legion enters its 99th year the newly elected chair, Una Cleminson, has recently chaired a strategic review that, in her words “will ensure the charity continues to have the greatest impact, making the most of our resources, and evolving in line with changes in the Armed Forces community.” The results of that review is the development of a new direction that will address the changes in the Armed Forces community, as the type of support needed is growing increasingly complex with people requiring help across multiple issues. Since 2016 the charity has seen a 20% increase in people needing basic support with housing, financial issues, mental health and wellbeing and mobility. In this time, the average expenditure per household through the Legion’s Immediate Needs Grants has risen 45% from £900 to £1330.
issue, with the establishment on the Orihuela Costa of a Veterans Club by welfare worker Sandie Coates.
EXERCISE STRETCHING – Some of the 30 attendees who joined in the fitness session
So far three monthly gatherings have taken place in Punta Prima aimed at highlighting the work of the Royal British Legion in Spain, as well as reducing social isolation and loneliness that Veterans and their families often experience.
The events were funded from monies raised in Spain through the Poppy Appeal and have included gentle exercise from fitHere in Spain one of the new initiatives currently being trialled ness Professional Crecia Wilding, aimed especially at those people who live on their own, along with relates especially to that mental health, wellbeing and mobility games and hobbies, demonstraFITNESS INSTRUCTOR Crecia Crecia tions on crafts and an exhibition Wilding with 92 year old Joe of Military Memorabilia by David and 93 year old Joy Cottam from his vast collection built up over many years. The events also had the involvement of David Minto from Help at Home, who was available to answer many queries and questions, the partnership also showing a good example of cross Voluntary Agency working on the Orihuela Costa. The three events, which also included refreshments, brought together almost a hundred people, dozens of them with no prior con-
nection to The Royal British Legion, and many of whom might otherwise have spent the day sitting in isolation at home. And the primary achievement of the three sessions in the eyes of those who attended, they brought together many veterans from the local community who were previously feeling isolated or alone and who now all know that there are always people out there who really care about their wellbeing.

ORK IS NOW UNDERWAY on the Pictured right, the Councillor for stretch of the coastal promenade Infrastructure Angel Noguera between La Caleta beach and Cala Capitán at a cost of 475,000 euros with completion expected to take approximately three months. The refurbishment and improvements, were planned during in the previous mandate by the councillor of Playas at the time, Luisa Boné, and consist of the repair and in some places the erection of a wall along the two kilometre stretch of walkway that joins the two beaches. Additional safety measures will see the placement of a wooden railing and the repair of the pavement in those sections which are in poor condition. The walkway will also be illuminated along the entire route with the lights integrated into the wall that runs along the promenade so that it will provide an indirect light that does not produce light pollution providing an attraction for people to walk at night along this beautiful area of the Orihuela Costa.

Changes at HELP Vega Baja HELP Vega Baja recently held their AGM in Casa Cultura, San Miguel and nominations were received and accepted for the Elective Committee. Michele Masson was returned as President and Richard Garland remains in place as Charity Secretary. After 5 years in post, Carole Jones stood down as Treasurer to spend more time travelling and Sue Birchenough was elected to join the committee as Treasurer. Michele presented Carole with a bouquet of flowers on behalf of the charity and spoke of the friendship that had developed throughout the charity with Carole. She also mentioned that Carole would not be leaving the charity entirely and would remain a much-valued volunteer. Members were presented with a copy of the accounts and were delighted to hear that the charity had helped a record number of people throughout 2019 with donations reaching in excess of 74,000 euros. Michele Masson explained “much of our efforts in 2019
TORREVIEJA U3A NEEDS YOUR HELP!! In line with our ongoing programme we are actively looking for new groups for our members. To this end we desperately NEED YOUR HELP! We are looking to start a Walking Netball Group. We have members who are all ready to play but, unfortunately we are lacking information, including places to play and teams in the local (Torrevieja) area that we can play against. Can you help?? We are the University of the Third Age and so our members need to netball walk, and not run.
were directed towards supporting families who were affected by the floods. It was amazing how the community rallied around to raise funds and of course how volunteers from the charity went way beyond what anyone could expect and were often found helping families in their homes during the day and dressed up and smiling on an evening attending fundraising events.
After 5 years in post, Carole Jones stood down as Treasurer, to be replaced by Sue Birchenough
2020 is a special year for the charity as we celebrate 40 years supporting people in the Vega Baja area. We will be holding some fabulous events and we very much hope that people will come along to support us. In particular we have our second golf event in June and we are hoping to have a gala ball later in the year – this is all in addition to our Spring, Christmas Fayres and so much more! For more information on how you can support HELP Vega Baja, to sign up as a member or become a volunteer, call 966 723 733 or visit either www.helpvegabaja.com or the Facebook Page.
Anyone out there that has information that could help us with this activity can they please get in touch with Peter Shaw - groups coordinator at torreviejau3agroups@gmail.com If you have a skill of any sort that you can share with like minded people, we would also be pleased to hear from you. The character Nellie Forbush, is being played by local entertainer Shannon Campbell (pictured). ALFIES GOLF SOCIETY Presentation to Elche Children’s Care Home Every year Alfies Golf Society raise money for a charity nominated by the captain and in 2019 Wayne Stevenson chose the Elche Children’s Care Home. With the hard work from the committee running various events like Captain’s bunker, fantasy golf, fines, football cards, Captain’s challenge etc, support and generosity from our members, and Cat
and Liz (proprietors of Alfies Bar who ran various fund raisers on our behalf) we managed to raise €2,200. The presentation was held at Alfies Bar on the 27th February 2020 to Michelle, the representative from Elche Children’s Care Home. Michelle informed us that our donation would go towards the purchase of a much needed minibus to allow the children to go on non vocational courses and excursions. Many thanks to everyone involved with Alfies Golf Society and we look forward to supporting our new captain and his charity during the 2020 season.

Whilst the Pintos had a bye on Monday, the Raiders were at La Siesta taking on the Pioneers, by taking 2 rinks and losing 2 by tiny margins, a very good away effort.
The first match of the day on Friday at Country Bowls was the Cubs to play against Vista Bella Conquistadors. The day started well with a beautiful morning but soon turned into a howling gale in which the Cubs swept aside the Conquistadors with 12 points to 2 and shots being 127 – 88. A terrific result and sets up the Cubs nicely for their last game of the season next Friday at Emerald Isle. Well done Cubs. The Geckos welcomed La Siesta Blues to Country Bowls in the afternoon. The conditions were very difficult with strong side winds creating havoc on the rinks. The Blues did very well getting to grips with the wind quicker than the Geckos and building a useful early lead on most of the rinks. The Geckos continued to struggle and at the halfway point it was obvious that they were having a particularly 'Bad day at the Office'!! As the game progressed the Blues built in confidence and the Geckos never recovered from their bad start. At the end of the match the Geckos were victorious on two rinks with good wins on both but trailed on the other four rinks, meaning that La Siesta Blues ran out the overall winners, winning the shots 115 to 87 and the match 10-4. Well done La Siesta and hard lines Geckos. For information please visit www.countrybowlsmurcia.com

On Sunday 1st we started with Club Finals. The first final was the Mixed Triples between Terry Morgan, Di Riley & Alan Barton and Melanie Highland, Jason & Peter Morgan. It was the former who secured the title for 2020. Jason was also involved in the afternoon, playing Mens Pairs with Chris Brazier against Tony Lale & Andy Reid. This time it was Jasons day, playing consistently to take the title. On Monday it was back to league bowling with the Pearls playing at home against Vistabella. They managed to win on 2 rinks and although another couple of the games were close they picked up just 4 pts. Winning trips were Terry Morgan, Graham Phillips & Peter Morgan 17-15, Mel Highland, Sandra Heath & that man again, Jason 20-13. In the afternoon the Diamonds travelled to Emerald Isle to play against the Moonrakers. The game was marred slightly by very strong gusty winds but the Diamonds managed to prevail and win on 3 and taking the overall by 13 shots for 8 points. Winning trips were Ken Gordon, Joe Brinton & Di Riley 21-11, Doug Beattie, Tina Brinton & Peter Bradbury 1912, while Mixed Triples winners Terry Harry Morgan, Di Riley & Alan Barton Johnston,

La Marina Bowls By Barry Latham There´s ups and there´s downs. There was ups when the Explorers at home played San Luis Trekkers as they won 11 – 3 with Shirley Hadaway, Margaret McLaughlin and Janet Parsons drawing in a close fought game. Mike Stone, Jim Reeves and Kathy Manning scored a 17 – 11 win. Don Fowkes, Jean Fowkes and Hilary Cronk won 20 – 15. Alex Whyte, Carol Smith and Anne Stone were victorious by ten shots and by the same shot difference Peter Parsons, Tom Spencer and Mo Kidd won. Then there was the downs when the Pathfinders went to Monte Mar to play the Matadors and didn´t get any points followed by the Winter League when they entertained San Luis and lost 10 – 2. Good job the Captain’s wife Shirley Hadaway and her three heroes namely Steve Syddell, Jean Fowkes and the Anne Stone saved the whitewash. Rumour had it that Anne´s husband managed a wrong bias. The Pioneers (Voyager Division) welcomed El Rancho Raiders to a blustery La Siesta causing hats and seat covers to fly around the rinks, the team knew they had to stay firmly on their feet to be in with any chance of regaining 2nd spot, the game came to a close with an excellent result of 10-4 (Shots 110-87). Rinks won by; Derek Smith, Tony Campbell & Alan Mawer (29-5). Rod Edgerton, Wendy & Alan Ralph (19-7). Ken Stringfellow, Pat Moore & Sue Jordan (18-16). Alan Carr, Tom Heaslewood, Jim Eastwood 15-14. The venue in the Winter League for La Siesta was Quesada, this fixture would need the team to be at the top of their game to be able to walk away with any points the game ended 4-8 (Shots72-99). Well done team, especially; Ken Stringfellow, Alan Ralph, Bill & Sue Jordan who had a commanding lead but dropped 10 shots on the last two ends winning (21-16). Barbara Cooper, Pat Harman, Florence & Mike Edwards were down but picked up 7 shots on the final ends to win (15-12). Maiden followed to save the match, but a concerted effort from " old un " Eyre gave him the opportunity to hit a match winning d16. The remaining four legs were played out, Seagrave winning next, Durrant somehow defeating Gildea in a burglary as big as Brinks Matt. Gareth Bevan and Miller completing the match. The scoreline flattered the Hyenas who have become a little bit of a " bogey " side against a very useful team who often underperform. MOTM Nikolov, and Seagrave. El Capitan showed just why they are favourites to complete the league and cup double, by trouncing Las Rosas, themselves no slouches. lt's very difficult to identify outstanding performances from the excellent " Caps ", but three are worth a mention.
The visitors fielded a strong first triple , Graham Solomons top scoring with a 140, ably supported by Lee Maiden and Andy Gildea. Although hosts player Alex Nikolov recorded a 95 and a ton, it was the Toppers trio outscoring the Hub to achieve first throw at the double which didn't materialise leaving Bob Taylor d2 to nick the first.
Ginge Lewis polished off the second triple on d20, didn't do too much in his pair withMel Bettel, but then goes barmy in his singles hitting 100, 140 and a magnificent 154 out. Ouch!!! Nigel Justice started his evening with a modest ton, finished 40 in his pair along with phenomenal scores of 140,140,180, partner Vycka Bobinas managing 101 points from the 601.

The 3 "T"'s scored similarly in the second via Hugh Galloway and Lee Seagrave, but to no avail as Paul Durrant completed the leg on d17.
Bobinas did however finish the first triple on 40 adding a further d4 in his single plus 100,137. Pretty decent arrow shooting but an improbable scoreline. MOTM Jem Gledhill and Nigel Justice.
Checkout (T20-T18-D20)
The third leg was a little livelier, Solomons again top scoring, but matched by Durrant and John Eyres tons ,the latter finding d8 for 3-0.
C.C.'s match went all the way with Legends to the thirteenth deciding 1001 team leg. The Flyers found themselves three up after the triples, John McKay obliging in the first with a 115 and a 69 out, Roy Hill supporting with a 140.

Solomans continued where he left off in the opening pair, but added a crucial d8 for the Toppers first. Maiden's 121 and Gildeas 134, would usually wrap up the leg, but Joe Millers 120, 85, 81 and Taylors d16 just got the Hub over the line for4-1. Old timers Eyre and Durrant overcame yet another oldie in Bas Schofield along with junior Galloway, Durrant finishing on d18 after 100,91,81. Carrying a 1-5 deficit, Toppers skip Phil de Lacy needed to go strong in the singles, so unsurprisingly opted for Solomons with the throw, smart move. However it didn't quite go to plan as the Topper found the t20 unusually difficult to find, against the volatile and loud but uncharacteristically subdued Bulgarian Nikolov, who planted his arrow in d10 after 81, 121.
Boss man Cameron Nesbitt made it 2-0 on d6, McKay once again finding d5 and a further ton. lronically the pairs went the way of the Legends, Sue Christie d2, Les Adams t8,s8 d12 and John Crabbed2, to level the scores at half time. Sandra Crabbe gave the Legends the lead for the first time, with a little bit of showboating usingd8 twice for a 32 out, followed by Roger Phipps also finishing on 32, but utilising d7, s12, d3, for five straight and two leg advantage. The pendulum swung the other way in the next two as Rob Sterling pulled one back for C.C.'s on d20, the boss making it evens stevens on d4. Five each and two to play, both sides had match winners for the closing two. John Crabbe made it six for the visitors on d12 against the impressive Bliss Wright, leaving McKay to save the day against MOTM Barry Shingler. lt could have gone either way, McKay the victor on d8 for the draw. Given a draw a penalty shootout was implemented in the form of a 6 a side team 1001. C.C.'s gained advantage by winning the bull, which preceeded some tasty scoring from both, culminating in Nesbitt completing the 1001 on s18, d20 for a 7-6 victory. MOTM Gail Murray.

Mike Probert talks Golf (In assn with Costa Blanca Green Fee Svcs) Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. IT HAPPENS EVEN TO THE BEST I have lived and played golf in this region of Spain for 16 years and played lots of society golf where to say the least the recording of scores is ‘creative’ and at times makes no reflection to the number of times the ball has actually been struck and yes you will all have such members playing in your society. As a young junior playing county golf and in events such as the English and British Amateur’s it was drummed into me by my father and other senior golfers the need to accurately record scores and to check and sign your scorecards after events. I remember playing in the club scratch championship as a 17 year old and after the morning round the leader put his card into the scorers box without signing it and after some time and the use of bent wire he recovered the card and signed it but guess what he only did the same thing in the afternoon round and this time couldn’t recover the card and was disqualified when he would have won. That player later went on to be the county champion of champions and runner up in the English amateur championship so a lesson well learnt. Last week Eddie Pepperall from the European tour managed to get himself disqualified from the Qatar Masters tournament after scoring a 71 and signing for a 71 BUT he noticed that the marker had got the scores wrong on holes 11 and 16 (even though the overall total was correct) and the marker changed the scores and Pepperall handed in the

Beck's 'In at the Deep End' once again At Inter Miami FC against Los Angeles FC. Photo: Victoria Beckham Instagram.
David Beckham former England, Man Utd and Real Madrid icon, kicked off his Presidency at his football club Inter Miami on March 1. "It has become more a reality as the days pass by," said David, 44, who joined my home City club Preston North End in the mid-nineties, on loan. "It's so exciting," said David, ahead of Inter Miami playing his former club Los Angeles Galaxy. Wife Victoria and eldest son Brooklyn were at the game against Los Angeles FC on March 1, staged at the LA FC's Banc of California stadium. "I want to be able to create a legacy that my children can turn around in 20 years and say, 'My dad built this club'," said President David. Author of David Beckham - In At The Deep End published in 2008, I befriended him during a short spell on loan at Deepdale in 1995, making five
appearances for North End. "I was shocked going on loan to Preston - I thought it was the end of my career at United," said David. It was Sir Alex Ferguson who reassured David, aged 19, that shipping him out on loan to PNE, then in the old 3rd Division, was to toughen him up. David was introduced to the Preston players, by gaffer Gary Peters, who said: "This is David Beckham, here on a month's loan from Manchester United – he'll be taking all our free-kicks and corners from now on." Beck's didn't have it all his own way at Deepdale - he had to take his own kit home on match days to wash! David, who wore a PNE Town Ender t-shirt, took players out to socialise while at Deepdale, and had no airs and graces, enjoying his time at the club. Being part of the Academy at United, David said of Inter Miami FC: "The plan of my dream is to create a state-of-the art Academy and bring kids through, like we did at United. “That will make us so proud. We were a unique group of kids at United, all coming in during 1992 and very successful. "Successful because of the players we came in with, including Roy Keane and Eric Cantona as well as manager Alex Ferguson. “That’s where my experience comes in. I understand the Academies. "The biggest lesson is I'm more persistent than I thought I was - and more stubborn than my wife thinks," quipped David, who has appointed CONCACAF Champions League twice-winner Diego Alonso as manager. Inter Miami will play their first 2 seasons in Fort Lauderdale, until work is completed on the 25,000 seater Miami Freedom Park, costing $750m.

FREE-REIN KEY TO MONTE By Andrew Atkinson CD Montesinos are set to return to the Valencia Regional Group 8 - in the wake of suffering relegation to the 2nd Regional Group 14 last season. "Following the 2-1 win against CF Sporting Albatera 'A' on March 1, I think we will get promoted back to the 1st Regional," talisman Maccan exclusively told The Leader.
The 2019-20 season saw the appointment of new coach, Murcia born Jesus Santander, formerly at FC Torrevieja (CD Torrevieja) who brought in assistant manager Ignacio Iannopolo (Nacho), goalkeeping coach, Juan Carlos Linuesa (Juan Carlos), and fitness coach Chema. "The coach Jesus came to the club and gave the players a 'free rein' - that was different from other managers," said Maccan. CD Montesinos have topped the 2nd Regional Group 14 for most of the campaign, loyally backed by the 'Full Monte' supporters, who have stood by the club, through thick and thin. Your 5-wood has 19 degrees of loft and is 10 inches too long and you've just holed three in a row, so you need to get back to playing instinctively." The champagne is on ice - with corks set to pop come the end of the season, with promotion back to the 1st Regional, at the first attempt, pending. Last season a plethora of issues unsettled the club; the sacking of Carlos, laying of a new pitch that lead to playing home fixtures away in latter games, injuries, and a leg-break suffered by Maccan. "Relegation last season came after I broke my leg, and other players injured. It was a big blow for everyone concerned at the club," said Maccan. There were a lot of raised eyebrows when Kieran Trippier completed his move from Spurs to Atletico Madrid last summer. The right-back became the only Englishman in La Liga but he isn’t the first. More and more English players are choosing to move around Europe with considerable success. This is nothing new but why are so many of them avoiding Spain?

Just this weekend England winger Jadon Sancho provided a club record-equalling 15th assist in Borussia Dortmund's Bundesliga victory at Borussia Monchengladbach.
English players playing in mainland Europe have always been out of the norm. Kevin Keegan moved to Hamburg in the 1970s but it wasn’t until the mid-1980s that things really started to change. Gary Lineker, Ray Wilkins, and Paul Gascoigne all had considerable success across Europe, as did Paul Ince and Steve McManaman a decade later. Michael Owen and David Beckham were the big names of the mid-2000’s but there haven’t been too many since. Michael Owen and David Beckham were the big names of the mid-2000’s
With more English Players moving to Europe, Why aren’t they coming To Spain? Welshman Gareth Bale has been a key part of a successful Real Madrid side but we haven’t seen too many Englishmen abroad in the last decade. But that is starting to change, especially in Germany. The Jadon Sancho Effect is in full swing. Named after the English youngster who swapped Manchester City for Borussia Dortmund, Sancho has become one of the world’s best young players in the Bundesliga. He scored 12 goals in his first full season in Germany and has already got more in his second. A relative unknown when he made the move, his success has led to many other clubs in Germany scouring England for young players who are unable to break into the first-team setup in the Premier League. Arsenal’s Reiss Nelson and Emile Smith Rowe spent time on loan in the Bundesliga last season and Everton have sent Ademola Lookman and Jonjoe Kenny there too. Reece Oxford, Keanan Bennetts, and Anthony Evans round off the list of Englishmen playing in Germany.
“It's an attractive prospect for some of those young players to leave England in order to gain experience by playing in another high-quality league,” claims Joti Chatzialexiou, director of sports at the German Football Association. “German clubs are always interested in talented players who could later develop into valuable assets. These are mostly younger players looking to learn their craft and get the first-team exposure they wouldn’t usually have in England. Germany is perfect for that but over the last year, we’ve seen some high-profile players move to Italy as well. There are some marked differences between the Premier League and Serie A, as some current players have noticed. “In England, you play with much more intensity,” said Angelo Ogbonna in an interview with Betway after he swapped Juventus for West Ham United in 2015. “In recent years, football has totally changed. It has become more tactical but this is compensated

by speed. “In Italy, the game is very tactical and so even defending is viewed as teamwork. Here, you often find yourself one-on-one against another player duelling with your opponent.” Perhaps that is why we’ve seen some more experienced English players swap the Premier League for Serie A. Last summer, both Ashley Young and Chris Smalling headed for the Italian leagues after lengthy periods with Manchester United. Ashley Cole, Micah Richards, and Joe Hart have all done the same in the last few years. It’s interesting that they are all defensive players who made the move in their late-20s or early-30s towards the end of their careers. That may be down to the more tactical nature of Serie A that Ogbonna discussed.
“In the Premier League, I was too eager to get forward. I feel like here, my understanding of when to go forward, when to defend, my positioning, has been helped a lot,” he told the BBC. “It starts on the training field. Tactically the manager works with you individually and, for me, man-management is the most important thing and I think he's unbelievable at that.” But Trippier is something of an anomaly, as are Atletico Madrid in Spain. La Liga isn’t really a league that can offer young English players a chance at first-team football like the Bundesliga, nor is it a slower-paced, highly-tactical division like Serie A. It’s somewhere in the middle so it’s hard to see why Spanish clubs would pay the premium price tags on the heads of English players. Until that changes, don’t expect to see too many more like Kieran Trippier in La Liga.
It’s happening all over Europe. Lee Cattermole and Jordan Spence are playing regularly in the Netherlands, as is Stephy Mavididi for Dijon in France. Cameron Jerome and Steven Caulker are playing for top flight Turkish clubs. But the same cannot be said of Spain. Kieran Trippier is the only Englishman in La Liga and he has noticed similarities between Spain and Italy.
