he city finally put an end to its Holy Week with a crowded early morning procession on Sunday, that succeeded the Holy Burial procession, held during the previous evening, and as tradition dictates, the people of Orihuela went from mourning the death of Christ to announcing his resurrection, with joy and jubilation that was noted with the beating of the drums.

T

On the most important day in the church’s calendar the image of ‘El Salvador Resurrected’ had returned to the streets of the city along with hundreds of onlookers who came out at dawn to pay their respects as they watched over the procession, which included the release of balloons and doves. There were also the traditional hallelujahs that the people of Orihuela sang out loud after the meeting between the Risen Saviour and the ‘Blessed Virgin of Sorrows,’ which served to commemorate the moment in which the mother of Christ meets again with her son, after he has returned to life. The release of the white

dove also took place, representing the holy spirit. It took off across city between the beating of drums and the applause of the public, representing everyone’s joy, after which there were fireworks, and balloons were released by the children to celebrate the Resurrection of Christ in Orihuela. The fact that the resurrection was celebrated at dawn did not prevent dozens of children from joining the traditional drum dance organised by the Brotherhood of the Resurrection. After this outpouring of happiness for the return to life of Christ, the usual move of the many biblical models back to their churches was carried out, so the statue of the Risen Saviour returned to the Cathedral, while, the Blessed Virgin of Sorrows was moved back to the Monastery of San Juan de la Penitencia. These were the final preocessions of Holy Week in Orihuela, a festival that continues to attract many visitors to the city as it continues to be declared an Activity of International Tourist Interest.

Couple arrive in Alicante Airport after boarding the wrong plane BY ANDREW ATKINSON A couple have criticised Ryanair after boarding the wrong plane on a flight to Alicante-Elche airport from Manchester. However, Ryanair said it was the passengers responsibility to ensure they board the correct aircraft. Simon Robinson, 57, and wife Michelle, 59, went through the boarding gate at Manchester Airport - on to a different plane, than their scheduled booking. The flight mix-up occurred amid two Ryanair flights to Alicante-Elche airport scheduled at similar times. "When we arrived at the airport it was extremely busy. We got to Terminal 3 and I put my case on the bag drop - but it didn't work so we had to queue up for check-in," said Simon. "We got our printed boarding passes - that was all fine. We went through security and it was absolutely mad. We got through to departures and knew exactly what time our flight was," he said. "The gate went up and we arrived at Gate 48. They called out the number on our boarding pass and me and my wife went up. We went through and straight onto the plane. "Someone came over and said we were in their seat - but we knew we were in the right seat. Luckily we went to the front of the plane and

GUARDAMAR ONCE PLAYER SCOOPS 9 MILLION EURO An lottery ticket sold in Guardamar del Segura has scooped the top prize of 9 million euro in last Friday’s ONCE draw. This is the second consecutive week that players in the province of Alicante have won a big prize, after more than 9.2 million euro was won last week in El Altet. The ONCE salesman David Penalva Rodríguez sold the ticket through his Point of Sale Terminal at which he sits on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday in Av. Cervantes, 29, next to the pharmacy.

Simon and his wife Michelle they told us we were on the wrong plane," added Simon. After the mix-up their correct flight was held for them - until they boarded: "The lack of organisation from Ryanair was abysmal. "For some reason there were two Ryanair flights to Alicante at pretty much the same time. "They should have told us before we were allowed to go through to the plane. Luckily our bags were on the right plane - but I could have been anyone. "Thankfully they held our flight for us - I would have been fuming if we had missed it. I won’t be flying with Ryanair again after this." A spokesperson for Ryanair said: "It is each passenger's responsibility

to ensure they board the correct aircraft. "There are several touch points throughout the passenger journey, which inform passengers of the aircraft's destination. "These include Flight number and destination, clearly printed on the passenger’s boarding card, flight number and destination displayed at the gate, flight number and destination called out in the standard boarding PA, flight number and destination are mentioned in the welcome PA on board. "As these passengers go through security control pre-boarding there was no security risk. "We are working with our handling agents in the Airport (Swissport) to ensure that this error doesn’t re-occur."

Pilar de la Horadada living its history

This free experience will be held again next Saturday, and also on May 14 and June 4. Pilar de la Horadada continues the project that publicises its history, through guided and dramatised visits during this year Last weekend, a group of visitors lived alongside the historical events, guided through them by the Department of Tourism, on a visit to the Roman quarries of Mil Palmeras and the Torre Vigía. The group belonging to the T'Avalem Horadada Emplea Joven III Project, together with the Municipal Theater Workshop, a part of the

Department of Culture, offered two theatrical performances which gave people the opportunity to experience events that occurred in Roman times and in the sixteenth century within Pilar de la Horadada. Those attending enjoyed both the natural setting and the Torre de la Horadada Watchtower, recognised as an Asset of Cultural Interest. This free experience will be held again next Saturday, and also on May 14 and June 4.

CABO ROIG WALKWAY CLOSE TO COLLAPSE R

esidents who use the route on a regular basis are warning that the area around the infamous ‘sinkhole’ on the walkway above la Caleta beach, is in even more danger of collapse. They are saying that the latest heavy rains have now enlarged the hole, which has been in need of ‘urgent repair’ since September 2019, and is now in a ‘dire and extremely dangerous state’. The two storms that have ravaged the coast in less than fifteen days, in addition to the strong tides that were seen last Monday, have caused a great deal of damage, especially to the beaches, and particularly in terms of the loss of sand. However, the council has said that it would urgently begin the recovery of the coastline - walkways, footbaths and removal of algae- to ensure that the eleven Orihuela Costa beaches are ready for Easter, and indeed most of them were. But still nothing has been done about the sinkhole that affects the pedestrian walkway above Cabo Roig beach, that has been in a dangerous condition for more than two and a half years since the DANA of September 2019- despite it being one of the

busiest areas of the coast. The Cabo Roig and Lomas Neighborhood Association has warned once again that the recent storms have enlarged it even more, with it now presenting even more of "a serious danger of landslide and collapse". In June the association filed a petition with the City Council to request the repair of the infrastructure, the shoring of the embankment, the placement of a fence and its signage, but it failed to get a response from the council. And now the situation is even more severe with serious damage to the slope, a provisional wooden walkway that threatens to fall at any moment, an alarming crack in a section of the low wall and a partially fallen fence, erected to prevent access, meaning that the area is in "a critical state and in an alarming condition". In addition, they add, there is no protection to prevent the passage of people along the beach at the base of the sinkhole, so it is also a danger to pedestrians. Already in October 2019, a Scandinavian resident was rushed into hospital after she fell into the hole, overgrown by the bushes on the embankment. It is, they say, one of the many chronic deficiencies, despite it being regularly highlighted by residents and visitors, and now, with the motion of censure recently served on the government by opposition parties, "the coast is falling apart before the astonished gaze of residents while the politicians continue to fight over their toys". "This is the image that was being seen of Orihuela Costa,” they say, “over Easter".

ORIHUELA MUSEUMS CLOSED OVER EASTER

This figure is the highest in the entire history of the Camino. It exceeds the number registered in the record year of 2019.

A Groundforce car has been embedded in the underside of a Ryanair Boeing 737 plane at Alicante-Elche airport. Aena Alicante commented on the incident saying: "The incident has had no impact on flight operations."

The route is able to record the number of pilgrims who pass along the walk through mobile phone detectors with Wi-Fi or Bluetooth installed at certain points.

It is understood that the handling agent left the parking brake on the parked vehicle off, and it rolled under the fuselage of a stationary Ryanair Boeing 737-800 aircraft, causing some minor exterior damage.

Aena have said that they will not be making a statement or any further comment, but are reported as saying the airline should be the one that gives the relevant explanations.

Influx of pilgrims walk Camino de Santiago Despite the pandemic, the Camino de Santiago has never had so many pilgrims at this time of year. According to the data, 20,700 walkers have visited the Compostela so far in 2022.

The aircraft was immediately taken to our maintenance facility for inspection. There were no passengers on board the aircraft and there were no injuries arising from the incident, which is still being investigated.

Despite it being one of the busiest periods of the year, Luis Ruiz Rodríguez, the manager of all Orihuela’s museums, has ignored the instructions issued by the council and taken the decision to close the city museums over the Easter holiday period. According to the councillor for culture, Rafael Almagro, he was only made aware of the decision on Wednesday afternoon when the municipal offices were already closed and he had no time to react and reverse the situation. He said that he tried, unsuccessfully, to contact Rodríguez. The mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, then sent a letter urging the manager to take "the appropriate measures so that the museums and the rest of the cultural services are opened with absolute normality in in the city. He also

denounced the closure in a week that will see far more tourists in the municipality. The city’s shopkeepers were also up in arms. “Easter in Orihuela is one of the most important economic periods. For this reason, the Association of Merchants of the Municipality of Orihuela does not understand how the city's museums can be closed on such important dates and with far more tourists in the city", said it’s spokesman. Rodríguez, who was appointed by Ciudadanos, justified the closure saying that it would be necessary to hire additional staff, expenses that are not affordable, since, according to the work calendar of the province of Alicante, Thursday and Friday are holidays and Saturday and Sunday are days off.

Price of fuel falls slightly The average price of fuel in Spain fell slightly last week. Petrol fell by 1.43% and diesel, which remains more expensive than petrol, fell by 2.06%.

In order to promote Education through the Department of Health in Pilar de la Horadada, the Oral Health Program visited the educational centers Martín Artigot, María Moliner, Virgen del Pilar and Mediterráneo, last week The activities saw dental checkups for the 5year-old and 6th Primary students, explaining the importance of maintaining correct dental hygiene and the early detection of possible problems in order to solve them as soon as possible, in addition to training sessions with teachers, fathers and mothers.

Including the bonus of 20 cents per litre that came into force on April 1 for consumers, the average price of a litre of petrol currently stands at 1.59 euro, its lowest level since the end of February. In the case of diesel, its price also fell to 1,613 euro per litre, its lowest level since the beginning of March.

Pilar Mayor welcomes new Guardia Commander The Mayor of Pilar de la Horadada, José María Pérez, welcomed the new lieutenant of the Guardia Civil last week who will be commanding the Guardia Civil barracks located in the coastal area, on Calle Conde Roche, in front of the Torre Vigía, Torre de la Horadada. David Besó arrived in Pilar from Madrid, after having held different positions in other parts of the country.

Money is one of the foremost international languages, its two major dialects being the Pound Sterling and the US Dollar. For many years I kept some old farthings in a bedside drawer, but my optimism eventually gave way tearfully to reality. When people say money is no object, they are speaking almost the literal truth these days, since most of us rarely clap eyes on our actual cash thanks to online shopping, credit transfers, and electronic payments of all kinds. Money is the modern equivalent of barter, whereby you would exchange a sheep or a cow for a sack of lentils, and you were the loser in that transaction, by the way, unless you are a vegan. For someone who is colour blind, as I am, it can be inconvenient when colour and money are mentioned in the same breath. "I don't have a red cent," is both literally and figuratively true in my case. Greenbacks mean nothing to me except strangely pale pictures of presidents, and

I never plant a lawn when I move into a new house. Purchasing clothes is surprisingly easy, although my family members still laugh at a trendy suit I thought I bought in a London boutique, which turned out to be a jester's motley. Most difficult of all, perhaps, is trying to follow a football match on my black and white television. Why would I pay for invisible colour? I am a curious individual -- no, let me explain! -the sort of man who would stop to gaze at a window with 'Watch this Window' written on it, even if I was being pursued by all my creditors at once. So in Mexico City, when I heard someone ask, "Why are all those pavements painted pink?" I made further inquiries, only to discover I was in the 'Zona Rosa', or Pink Zone, where tourists needn't fear to tread, in those days anyway. For once I could claim to be in the pink, even if I wasn't aware of it. On every French river, rowers used to be obliged to wear a certain colour to warn more leisurely floating boaters of potential peril -white was the Seine's colour, as I recall. And in old-style westerns, the hero always wore a white hat, as opposed to the villain's black headgear, even if the bad hat was yellow when

Make sure that you scrap your car the LEGAL way in Spain I personally know of individuals who have faced many such sanctions after the vehicle they thought they’d seen the back of was still driving around. I’m sure that many of you reading this article know of similar instances. Unfortunately, as long as your name remains on the document of ownership you are legally responsible for that vehicle. Here in Spain the system of scrapping a vehicle is far more complex than anything you are likely to face back in Ireland or the UK. You also have the added complication of the language barrier, so it is imperative that, when considering disposing of a vehicle, you use a company in which you have complete trust.

BRADLEY BREAKERS have been established on the Costa Blanca for over ten years during which time thousands of scrap cars have passed through their hands. Many of the vehicles required to be de- legalised, so it is a procedure in which the staff have an enormous amount of experience. It is also a subject about which they could tell you a horror story or two about; people who thought they had scrapped their ‘old banger’ only to find that the car was still registered many months later, even accumulating fines.

One such company is Bradley Breakers. They are experts in the field and they can make the whole process simple and uncomplicated. Simply make the call, they will make you a cash offer for your vehicle and, if accepted, they will collect on a tow truck from your home. They will leave you with the necessary legal documentation advising that they have taken ownership of your car and then, once the vehicle has been officially 'scrapped’, you will be issued with the official DGT Certificate {Baja'. Do be aware that, if this is something that you are currently considering, you need to ensure that your vehicle is scrapped by 31

It saves so much hassle and heartache further along the line if it is done in the correct way, and with a trustworthy company.

No broken relationship is beyond mending close friend called into our house on Sunday morning. We always have a great chat. A ‘by-the-way’ half way through a story he was relating stuck in my ceann afterwards.

A

The story related to a terminally ill buddy he went to visit in a Dublin hospital. When it came time to leave, my friend found the patients brother standing outside in the hallway. “Would you do me one favour”, he asked. “Ask John (not his real name) if he will see me.” The two brothers hadn’t spoken for twenty years. The sick brother had no hesitation in agreeing to see his sibling. No words were spoken, but my friend left the two brothers in a tearful embrace. The flip side of this coin is that I have known siblings to fall out and die without ever again speaking to each other. How many families do we all know where a rift opened and people stop speaking to each other. It may have been an almighty row, or more likely, something small, where pride and stubbornness caused both parties to pull back behind their self-created demilitarisation zone. The saddest part of all is that sometimes these family rifts are inherited by the next generation. It isn’t only in the family circle that what appeared to be solid relationships can break down. You see where two business partners can Bernie.comaskey@gmail.com *Author, entrepreneur and newspaper columnist, Bernie Comaskey, now spends most of his time on a farm in Ireland; but he retains his strong links with the Costa Blanca.

work together and build up a successful company, until one day a breakdown occurs and they become the bitterest of enemies. Solicitors become involved … and as always, they are the only winners. Ordinary friendships are no less important than any of the above. If two people have been longtime friends and have enough in common to make them friends in the first place, it is a great pity when such a relationship gets broken. A feeling of betrayal is one of the major causes of a rift among humans. It is worse now in this day and age where lies and deviousness are in the ascendency and truth - even when the truth is obvious, doesn’t count. But the important thing to remember is that we have no control over anybody else, and therefore the answer to mending a rift is to accept the other party for being how and what they are. People often speak about ‘trying to heal a rift’. To me, healing means curing and maybe this is setting the bar too high for a broken relationship. I think that the word ‘mending’ is much more appropriate here. When you mend something, it may not necessarily be as good as new, but this is much better than not having any at all. It will get the relationship up and running again. The hardest thing is to give the other fellow the right to be wrong, but we should all work on it.

The following Saturday evening the business couple were having a drink in their local and there was ‘yer man’ at the other end of the counter with a smirk on his face. So what did his former employer do? He sent him down a pint! Now, that is class and I wish I could be a bit more like that man.

The only way to mend a rift is by not expecting anything for yourself. This is one time you need to start every sentence with ‘I’ instead of ‘you.’ If you put down an ultimatum or expect an apology, it’s not going to work. The best place to start the mending process is by engaging the

GARDEN FELIX - FAREWELL TO SPRING The Clarkia is part of the evening primrose family, which blooms in summer or autumn, and sometimes in winter months in milder climates, hence their common name 'Farewell to Spring'. The flowers grow in double or semi doubles, and have frilly crepe like petals that come in a wide range of colours. They need to be planted in a location, with a minimum of six hours of full sunlight, but prefer more in very well draining soil. They will grow between 1 and 3 feet tall with a spread of 8 to 12 inches. They don’t like overly rich or wet soil, are very drought tolerant and thrives with little to no water.

You can fertilise lightly at the first signs of blooms. However, you want to avoid over fertilising since these flowers are used to surviving in an arid climate. Too much fertilising will result in leggy, leafy plants with little to no blooms. Clarkia sometimes has weak stems, but if you space them 4 to 6 inches apart, they can lean on each other for support. Otherwise, simply put a few twiggy branches into the soil around the plants while they are young for support later on. To encourage your plants to continue to produce blooms, you need to dead-head. If you wish the garden to self-sow, then leave the deadheads at the end of the season and enjoy a renewed garden next season.

help of a mutual friend who never took sides during the rift. Don’t be afraid to initiate the first move. The worst that can happen is a rejection and this is not your problem. From your side, you start off by admitting anything you did wrong and stating how you could have handled the situation better. More often than not, the other party will respond in kind and admit their mistakes which caused the breakdown. Prevention is better that cure. ‘Bite you tongue’ is an age-old piece of good advice: Easier said than done and many of us would be eating tons of ‘Bonjello’ if only we could adhere to that motto! DON’T FORGET Actions speak louder than words – and speak fewer lies.

On Saturday night April 9, Crescendo raised 352 Euros for the Benijofar Food Bank after giving a standing-room only concert at the Iglesia Santiago Apóstol in Benijofar. This was the first time

Crescendo has given a concert since the pandemic arrived in Spain in 2020. Judging from the size of the crowd and the money raised for a local charity, it was a big success. The choir performed a variety of music in both English and Spanish. Some of the best known songs the choir performed included Viva la Vida by British rock band Coldplay, Thank you for the Music by the Swedish pop group ABBA and You Raise Me Up, composed by a Norwegian-Irish duo called Secret Garden. One of the best known Spanish songs performed was Si Tu Me Dices Ven by the Mexican musician Alfredo Gil, founder of the band Trio Los Panchos. If interested in joining Crescendo or attending the May concert, please see the Crescendo website at: http://www.crescendo-choir.com/index.html. The choir is especially seeking men to join. The choir includes sopranos, altos, tenors and basses. The group sings a wide variety of songs ranging from musicals to spirituals, from pop to classical, in English, Spanish, Dutch, and Latin. Crescendo lives up to its name of International because it has many nationalities among its members, including English, Dutch, German, Scandinavian and American. It has a Spanish Musical Director, Irene Oliva, and a Spanish pianist, Cristian Martinez. Allthough we are many nationalities, English is the main language spoken. ORIHUELA COSTA ECOPARK NO LONGER MOBILE

Tuesday 19th - Sunday 24th April 2022

T

These ecoparks are managed by the CONSORCIO DE LA VEGA BAJA SOSTENIBLE, through the public company VAERSA of the Generalitat Valenciana and until the middle of last year it travelled between Dehesa de Campoamor, Aguamarina, La Zenia and Playa Flamenca. Since then, however, the Orihuela councillor for street cleaning and RSU, Damaso Aparicio, has decided that the ‘mobile’ ecopark will be located in one static site, in Calle Salvador Dali, Playa Flamenca, and as such many residents are no longer able to get to the facility. The consequence of this change has

been a decrease of more than 81% in the volume of material deposited, showing a dramatic reduction in its use. Whilst still mobile, figures show that a monthly average of 211 kilos was deposited in the container. The the 7 months since it moved that figure has dropped to 38 kilos. Introduced locally just 5 years ago, the Eco park provides for the deposit of special household waste that cannot be deposited in conventional containers, due to its contamination. Thus, the different sections of these containers can take domestic oil, fluorescent tubes and energy saving light bulbs, paints and solvents, aerosols, waste electrical and electronic equipment, and print cartridges. On 4 April representatives of AVCRL Asociación de vecinos Cabo Roig y Lomas have asked that it once again returns to a mobile facility as, according to the municipal website, is still the case in Orihuela City and it’s pedanias. After two very difficult years, with the band having to cancel many concerts and rehearsals because of the pandemic, it will be really good to be playing once again. There will be a good selection of music including Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture, Elgars Pomp and Circumstance, music from popular Broadway and West End shows, including The Greatest Showman and everybody will be encouraged to join in with the Vera Lynn songs from World War Two. Proceeds from the concert will go to the D.F.C./Ukraine Appeal, Mensshed in San Fulgencio and the R.B.L. Majority of schools in the Province vote for ‘Continuous Day’ able to enjoy it because of an incomprehensibly unfair and anti-democratic system”.

chools have been campaigning for many months about a change to school hours and in many of them, at a recent poll, over 55% of families voted to change to the new continuous school day.

S

According to the provisional results, of the 498 centres in the province, 375, 75.3%, will have a continuous shift next year, while the remaining 123, 24.7%, will continue with the split day.

Many others, though, have retained the status quo, although in a system whereby the act of not voting equates to a ‘no’ vote, despite affirmative votes tripling those that were cast as negative, as they have failed to reach the 55% threshold, it means that they too must say “no” to the new school day, and this is what has happened in a large number of the schools in the province, that held a ballot last week.

In the Community as a whole, in the next academic year 2022-2023, a total of 750 centres, 52.2% of the total, will have a continuous day and 47.8%, 687 centres, will have a split day. Once the final results are known, and the possible appeals have been addressed, the Director General for Educational Innovation and Planning will announce details of the schools that have voted for the change.

Teachers’ union Anpe, through it’s President Lauren Bárcena, said, “the totally undemocratic disposition of the current regulations for modifying the working day is all too clear”. “The need to achieve 55% of ‘yes’ votes, while counting those who fail to vote as a ‘no’ means that efforts to change the working day into a continuous day are an insurmountable abyss for many educational communities, which for the most part have voted in favour of the change, but who will not be

If a parent didn’t vote it was counted as a ‘No’ vote.

However, the latest incident is about Hayley Scanlan, 28 years of age, living in Huntingdon with her husband and two children. Two years earlier the Scanlan family had lived in Luton, and while there it is alleged that a neighbour, living on her own, was having difficulty looking after a Yorkshire Terrier following a heart attack.

Twelve Inches It is becoming difficult here in Spain to find a lovely French Baguette with the light fluffy interior, as supermarkets appear to be calling their local bread sticks by the same name, and that is also the case in many eating houses. In one recently, what was identified on the menu as the well-known francais version turned out to be a Spanish wide stick with the crust slashed to imitate the original. I can hear the French visitors saying – ‘Ou est mon Baguette?’ Every day, looking at reports from various sources, proving all that went before is slowly being eroded, especially much of which is sacrosanct to women. Two happenings this week which affect female privacy, although I must add in this incident, not a day to day happening, but nevertheless, it is an indication of the way authorities are eroding the rights of the female. It is the ruling that ladies that have been arrested by the Police can be strip searched by a trans woman. Which means she can lose her dignity and be uncovered from her clothing by a full body man who thinks he is of her gender “come on love get your clothes off,” as if she has just been dragged in from the streets…… however, if the real lady refuses, she can be charged with a ‘hate crime’. It seems to me to be a ‘loop de loo’ ruling.

marriage and a family will mean nothing.

The Yorkshire Terrier It is some time now since I told the story of a bevy of policemen. They arrived at a house to arrest a small Yorkshire Terrier for being dangerous when, two months previously, it had attacked a post person. He must have been a snowflake to report a tiny dog snapping at him.

Just remembering the guy who died when, during his arrest, an officer leant on his neck. This saw the formation of the charity BLM (Black Lives Matter) run by three people, which has since raised over ninety million dollars; they now live in a multimillion-dollar property. Nothing important – just sayin! Take care. www.facebook.com/percy chattey There are sixty-four books by me available on Amazon and Kindle.

SPANGLES ON TOUR

Members were able to see quite a bit of the city and, for some, enjoy a true Valenciana paella!

“We are so lucky to have such wonderful sponsors and many people have remarked on how smart our new uniforms are” said Chorus Manager, Lyn Baines. “After over two years of restrictions, this trip to Valencia was a much-needed boost and the new uniform just topped it off.”

The concert at the Iglesia San Esteban was an experience every Spangle will remember and cherish. The setting was spectacular, they received a standing ovation after their performance which included Spanish songs and then joined the Texan choruses, Friends in Harmony and the Harmony Belles, for two songs. One was “Let There Be Peace on

Now this is the interesting bit; they are there to serve a summons and to pick up a small dog but because it is a little difficult as the woman would not open the door, the Police call for backup, closing the road off as two armed police arrive. While all this is happening her six-year-old son, who has had the small dog for two years, is crying and cuddling it on his bed.

In the meantime, burglaries continue to escalate, which appear to be of little concern to the people in blue. That is partly confirmed when one senior Police Superintendent has suggested that officer’s in the force should be given the opportunity to work from home. I guess they would be safe and secure there.

What are their thoughts about children? Possibly - they were fun having them but now the requirement to look after them is a chore and the kids will get over it. In my opinion I don’t think they will, affecting their lives permanently, as they grow. Trust,

The group travelled by train from Murcia and Alicante, proud to wear their new ‘walking out’ uniforms, kindly sponsored by A1 Mortgages UK, Paul’s Places in the Sun and Insurance Agents from Los Alcázares.

The owner of the house is upset, in shock and does not really know what is happening and she refuses to open the door.

It is such a sad story and another colossal waste of Police time. Surely it would have been more constructive and less costly to have sent one officer to discuss the problem, instead of frightening the life out of a Mum and a young child, with a mob of armed police.

We are talking about civil arrangements as the ruling is not the same for religious ceremonies. The worthless paper agreement that the two people endorsed, who once claimed to be so much in love that it was going to last a lifetime, sign the agreement not thinking it can be ripped to shreds on a whim, or the first time the couple’s commitment suffers a breakdown. Then for each of the partners it is time to look for greener pastures with no come back because of their action.

With several new Spangles members, the trip was great for everyone to get to know each other. Travelling together, staying at the same hotel as the other choruses, dining and enjoying some singing with them.

One day Hayley is surprised to find nine police officers with taser guns knocking on her front door and wanting to issue her with a summons. They are also there to retrieve the 12” dog - you could put it in your pocket - as the original person had reported it as stolen.

The mother, thinking there is something wrong, as the dog was given to her, is scared stiff especially when the Police threaten to use a battering ram to force their way in. She had owned the small pet for the past two years, with plenty of people able to confirm.

The other erosion, although does affect both sexes; it has recently been ruled that civil marriages are no longer to mean anything as they can be renounced by one or other of the former lovebirds tearing up the contract, and it is finished. - Try doing that with a car rental contract!

SPANGLES LADIES HARMONY CHORUS travelled to Valencia city last week, to join two choruses from San Antonio, Texas, for a concert in the magnificent Iglesia San Esteban.

The dog had been chipped and, so the story goes, she was too poorly to look after this tiny Yorkshire Terrier, which was in a poor state with matted hair, so after advice she gave it away to the Scanlan couple, who sometime later moved away.

Earth” which was very apt in these turbulent times. “It was an honour and privilege to be a part of this experience in such a beautiful setting” said Spangles Musical Director, Valerie Lynch, “I was so proud of every member as we received our standing ovation”. Spangles is a ladies’ a cappella chorus, singing in four part harmony. They rehearse every Thursday, from 10.00 am to 1.00 pm at Centro Municipal Las Claras, Calle Helena, Los Narejos, Los Alcázares and visitors are always welcome. If you’d like to book the chorus for an event or you are thinking about joining them, you can find out more on their website: www.spangleschorus.com or email info@spangleschorus.com

QUESADA ROUNDUP

No official league games this week, just Champion of Champions, but we did have a rearranged fixture against El Rancho on Friday, our winning trips were Lesley Joynes, Martha Reynolds and Garth Slater 23-11, and Kath Manning, Paul Tregoing and Tom Spenser 20-10.

Despite a couple of days when some rain was in evidence, not a minute of play was lost during last week's Champion of Champions tournament, which was held at Quesada bowls club.

C 0f C started off with a mixed pairs win, with Anne & Mike Stone and a mixed 4's loss of Lesley & David Joynes and Janet and Peter Parsons, I cannot give you the scores as I am only reading from the LLB web site. Anne and Mike went on to win their next game to qualify for the semi-final. Our Ladies Pairs of Irene Mangam and Maryln Fryatt have won through to the semi-final and our Men’s Pairs of Garth Slater and Alex Morrice have won their first 2 games to also get through to the semifinal.

By Barry Jones On Saturday San Miguel bowlers, Noel Davis, Gail Willshire and Fred Willshire played in the San Luis Open Final where they won without losing a game throughout the competition, (they did draw one match).

La Marina Bowls Club

The overall shot difference was 91-76 in our favour.

However Jane Hamill got through to the semi final round of the Ladies singles and Neil Morrison is due to compete in the Men’s singles final on Sunday morning 17th April. Neil has played so well in the previous rounds so we hope he can complete the task! good luck to all the competitors. This coming week it will be all focus for a full 4 days of league + catchup matches and a fun celebration on Friday, ahead of St George’s Day on 23rd finishing with a meal at Oasis San Luis”.

There were some notable performances by QBC qualifiers, including Irene Everett, who fell at the semi final stage of her lady's singles event and Jason Prokopowycz who lost in the semi final of his mens singles match.

Our Men's singles of Don Fowkes unfortunately lost his first game as did Janet Parsons in the Ladies singles. Our congratulations and commiserations go to our 3 semi-finalists but unfortunately, they did not qualify for the final.

The mixed triples team of Mel Highland, Jason Prokopowycz & Peter Morgan, lost in the final against an Emerald Isle side.

Leaving bowls behind when I was a kid Good Friday was not aptly named it was the dullest day of the year, but when work came along you realise that the night before (Maundy Thursday) was perhaps one of the best nights of the year as for most (even the night workers) there was no work in the morning, just hot cross buns.

Chris

In the mixed rinks discipline, Chris Brazier, Mel Highland, Peter Morgan & Jason Prokopowycz, also lost in the final, this time it was against a Greenlands based foursome.

This Maunday evening we had our monkey racing and I can assure you a great night was had by all those that came along.

Brazier & Jason Prokopowycz

But, in the mens pairs, Chris Brazier & Jason Prokopowycz, beat a Greenlands pairing, to take the crown once again.

After the matches the presentations were made by Bob Donnelly who thanked the owners, Committee & members of Quesada for giving up their green for the 8 days. Ibex Insurance for donating bottles of wine for the singles players. John O’Brien for his organisation & scheduling both before & during the event. Suzi Cooper & her merry band of men for coordinating the event on behalf of Quesada. The spectators for all their support & finally all the players who came & played the matches in the true spirit of the game.

Wash the glove in a washing machine with other items of the household wash with a soft detergent. Check the glove for ‘wear markings’ because if the wear pattern is on the palm you could have a problem with your grip or have handle of the incorrect size and if the wear pattern is under the thumb you could be gripping to hard. Just give the above a try and you will find it saves you a few hard earned pennies.

Petanca Sunshine League overcomes the rain by Susan Ward Convincing win for Torrevieja’s Petanca matches have certainly seen weather like never before in the Winter 2021/22 season. So many matches have been postponed, found another date, then only to be postponed again!! The rain and wind could not have come at a busier time for petanca The Sunshine Winter League season was coming to an end, so each match was so vital in deciding which team were going to win their division, staying up or would they be relegated. Then of course the final of the Cup, Plate, Bowl and Wooden Spoon -which had been played in a different format which was well received- had to be fitted in. Yes it has been a very difficult season because on top of the weather teams have had to cope with players still catching covid, and as travel has become easier the urge to see family

and friends after such a long time was understandably very strong. At last though the last league matches and finals of cup, plate, bowl and wooden spoon were able to take place. It took 2 days due to some pistes being flooded still. The majority of teams and players were very understanding and co-operated with the decisions that the committee had to make. The Sunshine League Presentation, after again being cancelled twice,

eventually took place at the beginning of April. It was well supported and the rainy weather did not stop teams collecting their medals. It was held at Domino Bar in Los Altos and a big thank you to Colin, Sarahanne and staff for a good job in extraordinary circumstances. Winners: Division 1 Amigo Belgas, Div 2 Los Altos Amigos, Div 3 Laguna Rosa Bubbles, Division 4 Laguna Rosa Sharks CUP Laguna Rosa Bubbles, PLATE Los Flamenca, BOWL Mediteraneo Piranas, WOODEN SPOON Peacocks Red Big Congratulations to all the above teams. The penultimate match of the season on 8 May, sees Thader travelling to Elche based Carrus Ilicatana, who although currently sit in 11th place, will not be taken lightly. However, a victory against fellow strugglers Mallorca on Saturday, together with defeats for the teams directly below them, Rayo and Getafe, has redefined the relegation dogfight and effectively secured the Illicitanos position in La Liga for another season. Francisco made six changes to the starting lineup. He also changed his system to get his most comfortable victory of the season against Mallorca. With just half a dozen games remaining, Elche now sit 7 pts above the bottom three, a cushion that should be enough to ensure their permanence in the division, while for Mallorca, currently just one point above the drop, they will be looking anxiously at the Barcelona v Cadiz result on Monday, hoping for an emphatic Barca win. Guti and Fidel gave two clear warnings in the first half before Mojica opened the scoring just before the interval with a shot from a Fidel cross.
