Armed with passports, and in light of the current security situation, fully expecting entry to be somewhat of a chore, the intrepid fifty were actually sitting at the Arsenal gate by 9am. A brief visit to the station guard post by the dashing Malcolm, who immediately charmed the Provost NCO into submission, and the coach rolled into the base with hardly a hitch, other than the wallop from Mary as Malcolm got back onto the coach. Bright and early, with the assigned guide still rubbing the sleep from his eyes, however, the group were consigned to the cafeteria where many chose to take a belated breakfast but on the stroke of 10 we were ushered back to the main gate where the tour got underway. With the visit carried out mainly in Spanish the group were fortunate to have the services of TRACS member Pablo, who spent the morning translating for the escorts, perhaps rather more so than he had anticipated at the start of the day, but one that he came to enjoy as the visit progressed. We were slowly escorted around this architectural jewel where construction, which took 50 years to complete, was first undertaken in 1732 by the military architect Sebastián Feringán. And what an absolutely wonderful job he did despite Staff at Licor 43

never seeing his finished product. It was explained that the construction itself was undertaken by prisoners and slaves who would later contribute to the construction of ships and fortifications of the city. The work consisted of the establishment of a large military port taking in dykes, workshops, warehouses and shipyards, which in recent years was followed by the addition of the Submarine School. Indeed it was the Submarine School that was the next port of call, first the museum and then the S-80 submarine Simulator which has been developed to help train the crews to sail modern day vessels. We were then escorted onto the Corvette, the Infanta Cristina, which was first commissioned in 1980. Once on deck the group were shown around the vessel as a young naval engineer explained life on board as well as many of the armaments and operational capabilities. We also toured the bridge, the ship’s command post, from where the senior watch keeper would take charge the ship when out at sea in it’s operational role. Following a sad goodbye, having enjoyed the visit far more than had been anticipated earlier in the day it was time to enjoy lunch on the seafront before making the short trip along the AP7 to take in the Licor 43 Experience. An introductory brief was first carried out by our guides before the party was shown around the company museum and the pro-

duction and bottling plants. Unfortunately the timings coincided with siesta, or it may have been a changeover in shift, but as we were escorted around the facility there was little activity to be seen. But much of the history, dating back to Roman times, as well as the origins of the company in the early 50’s, was explained as we moved across the factory site. It was then onto the ‘chill-out bar’ where many of us were pleasantly surprised as a variety of products were made available to sample. My favourite, Ginger 43, although it sounds more like a Chinese waiter, was everything we were told it would be, an easy to prepare and fresh tasting summer cocktail, now most certainly one of my favourites…..mmm! The mandatory shop was of course situated right next door and this was quickly opened as we began to drain our drinks. Quite obviously no likelihood of seconds there! So what a pleasant surprise when we were actually welcomed by further samples of additional products and company lines, as once again the hardy had the unenviable task of digging deep and emptying the proffered bottles. The mandatory flagon was of course purchased and the compulsory photograph taken as we were then ushered back onto the coach for the short journey home. A very enjoyable day in extremely good company. Well done to organisers Malcolm and Mary Rusbridge and we hope that cauliflower ear, Malcolm, doesn’t cause you too much discomfort during the coming days. But at least it keeps your hat up! TRACS meets on the 3rd Weds of every month at 11am in the Marina Bar at the Torrevieja Int Marina while the RBL meets at the Olympia Restaurant in Mil Palmeras on the 3rd Thursday starting at 7.30pm. SPAIN’S EU SECRETARY OF STATE CALLS FOR RECIPROCAL AGREEMENT ON HEALTHCARE

W

hilst the UK Government is still to implement Article 50 and start any meaningful negotiations with the EU regarding its departure, hundreds of thousands of us continue to live in limbo and will carry on doing so until such time as decisions are made regarding residency, the continuing reimbursement of our healthcare by the NHS and the freezing of our UK pensions. But just last week SPAIN is said to have boosted Theresa May’s bid to win a fair Brexit deal for British expats living in the EU, by voicing its support for a mutual agreement. The country’s EU Secretary Jorge Toledo, who will lead Madrid’s negotiations over Brexit, told The Times: “We are broadly in favour of retaining a reciprocal agreement on questions like healthcare and freedom of movement. Indeed the recently elected Secretary of State for the European Union went a stage further in stating that any deal MUST allow British expatriates to remain on the Costas with all of their benefits intact, including access to free healthcare. Back in UK, Senior Government figures have told business leaders that only “a few” of the 27 EU member states are left to agree the outline of a reciprocal rights agreement for Britons in the EU, and EU nationals living in the United Kingdom when Britain leaves the EU so we would now hope that it is only a matter of time before British expats are formally granted the right to carry on living both in Spain and elsewhere on the Continent. It was also refreshing to have sight of a recent letter from The Right Honourable David Jones MP, the Minister of State for Exiting the European Union, to Sir Roger Gale MP, in which he stated that the UK Government is ready to reach an agreement NOW on the status of UK Nationals in the EU, and of EU Citizens in the UK, if other countries agree. He also said that such a deal is the right thing to do and is in the interests of everyone involved. Mrs May also told business leaders at the CBI: “I want an early agreement on the status of UK nationals in Europe and EU nationals here, so that you and they can plan with certainty.” Nevertheless, until such time as the decisions are made and formalised we continue to live on the edge. But the correspondence between the two Members of Parliament, as well as the statements from Toledo and May were extremely encouraging for us all

Currently there are said to be 1.2 million Brits residing in the EU (including 309,000 in Spain) while 3.25 million EU citizens live and work in the UK. Of the Brits living in Spain 292,000 are registered with local councils while just over 100,000 are over 65 years of age. Madrid has further stated that it would also support a deal that would maintain free movement between Northern Ireland and the Republic.

Orihuela prepares to celebrate Holy Week O

rihuela's Holy Week is one of Spain's foremost religious and cultural events. It was acknowledged as being of International Tourist Interest in 2010 and there are a number of singularities which make it quite different from anything else on Earth. One example can be seen in those traditions which have been passed down over hundreds of years and which continue today. One of the most moving processions is on Holy Thursday, starting at eleven o'clock in the evening: The SantĂsimo Cristo del Silencio. (Holy Christ of Silence). This is when one sees two long lines of devotees, dressed in their hooded gowns, covering their heads, walking through the crowds in complete silence. The only light along the route comes from the lanterns they hold, since the city remains in complete darkness after public lighting is turned off on all the streets where the procession passes. This is La Hermandad Penitencial del Silencio, (Penitential Brotherhood of Silence), which originated in 1940, inside one of the city's three Gothic churches, the Church of Santiago. This church is home to the only figure on display at this time: El Cristo del Consuelo, (The Christ of Comfort) the work of Jose Puchol (1795).As the figure passes, in the midst of an atmosphere of the deepest respect, the visitor can hear one of the most characteristic sounds of the Orihuela Holy Week, the so-called Canto de la Pasion, (Song of Passion), a transient masterpiece which can be traced back to the 16th Century and whose song of "hoarse angels" has been transmitted by means of the spoken word tradition, right up to our days. As regards religious traditions, another procession stands out, that of the Santo Entierro de Cristo (The Holy Burial of Christ), on Holy Saturday. Nominated as a candidate for World Heritage classification, this is probably Orihuela's most striking Holy Week procession. It can be traced back to the beginning of the 17th Century, when, in an effort to

acknowledge the merits, honour, fidelity and love for the city, the city's governors decided to award the title of the Covered Knight. This honorary year-long post gives the holder the privilege of carrying a black flag with the city slogan and of wearing a dress coat and top hat, along the entire route, as well as inside the Cathedral, as the funeral procession makes its way in. It is a procession of official mourning in which the whole town council takes part. In tribute to this figure, in the square next to the Cathedral, one can see a bronze statue showing a walking man, dressed in a dress coat and top hat, carrying a flag. There is, however, another aspect to this procession. It is not only the figure of the Covered Knight which stands out here. A striking procession makes its way through the streets, creating an air of great anticipation. It is the oldest procession in Orihuela's Holy Week: "El Triunfo de la Cruz" (The Victory of the Cross) (1696). It is also known as "La Diablesa", (The She Devil) with a cross on top of a globe, accompanied by a skeleton on the one side and by the figure of the Devil with breasts, on the other. This tableau, the only one of its kind in the world and of profound significance in the realm of alchemy, is featured every year on Spanish news bulletins. Another tradition is that which represents the socalled Roman Centuria. Every day a group of Roman soldiers follows on at the end of the procession, with their spectacular, bright costumes. Once finished, it is customary for spectators to congregate en masse in the Plaza del Marques de Rafal, where the Centuria, accompanied by the sound of trumpets and drums, performs the so-called

"Caracol" or snail, a circular march, which gets smaller and smaller, as it progresses. This is one of the sights of Orihuela's Holy Week which simply cannot be missed. This then, the Semana Santa of Orihuela, is a unique experience. The visual feast of colour and light in the Nazarenes' tunics, the spectacular thrones or in the sunsets from the Seminary, the wafting scent of incense, the experience of the sound of the "twin" trumpets during the day or the Canto de Pasion at night.

There is also the experience to be had by contemplating the extraordinary works of the great sculptor Francisco de Salzillo and so many others. Their realism provokes those who witness the sight, into feelings of pity, a sombre collective mood which envelopes both locals and visitors, just as it envelopes the face of Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazarene, Patron Saint of the city, which brings out, in us all, the Truth in the message of Jesus Christ. More information on dates and timings next week

Water and electricity meter manipulation scandal R ecently, in the Valencian Community many customers of water and electric suppliers have been overwhelmed by skyrocketing bills following allegations of fraud and manipulation of their own meters. Often, the affected customers barely know where their meters are located, do not have direct access to them, let alone having any knowledge of plumbing or wiring. Surprisingly enough, in most of the cases the alleged manipulation occurred when the affected customers were out of Spain. Still, the water and electric suppliers assume that the customers themselves have handled their meters in the attempt to defraud those companies, and for this reason the suppliers are charging them bills in the order of € 3.000,00 behind the clear threat of cutting off the water or electric supply in case of payment default. Obviously, the customers facing the threat of being deprived of basic rights – like access to running water and electricity are – come to terms with these companies and accept to pay in instalments the huge bills. The blatant injustice of this story is that these suppliers are acting on the basis of no sound evidence whatsoever to support their heavyhanded allegations: the only proof of meter manipulations they have is an inspection report drafted by one of their own employees in the presence of no one else. Interestingly, contrary to the relevant jurisprudence, the companies did not take care of informing their customers in advance about the inspections so that they could have witnessed their meter examinations. In order to give these inspection reports a semblance of officiality and neutrality, companies’ employees call police officers to have them write down a police report to certify the purported manipulations. These police reports simply show that the meters were manipulated, but do not prove that the customers handled them.

To add insult to injury, these completely innocent customers have also been served on with notices of sanctions and fines by their respective City Halls.

The good news in this most comcerning story is that these customers are being organised into an association – the CUSTOMERS AFFECTED BY SUPPLIERS (CAS) – to lodge a class action led by the law firm RAYMUNDO & HOPMAN against these supply companies. If you are a customer who has been affected in a similar manner by your water/electric supplier, you might want to join the Association. Would you like to learn Reflexology? Reflexology courses are here now on the Costa Blanca which means that anyone who would like to become a Reflexology practitioner can now train locally and not have to travel back to the UK. Reflexology is a gentle art, fascinating science and an extremely effective form of therapeutic foot massage that has carved an impressive niche in the field of complimentary medicine. Reflexology is the application of specific pressures to reflex points in the hands and feet to stimulate and revitalize energy flow. Reflexology is a completely safe form of therapy, as well as being a very relaxing and pleasant experience. The purpose of a course of treatments is to normalise the body’s functioning, to help break down tension and alleviate stress, and to improve nerve functioning

and blood supply throughout the body. Reflexology works best when it is used to treat the whole body, rather than specific conditions, and this, in turn, encourages the natural healing processes to work more speedily and efficiently. The simplicity of a reflexology treatment belies its efficacy. No high-tech. complicated equipment is necessary. The technique is so simple it does not require years of training to master. A good practitioner needs a sensitive but sturdy pair of hands, a genuine desire to ease pain and suffering, compassion, intuition and an understanding of human nature. Reflexology is not only effective with just adults. You can soothe a fractious infant simply by applying gentle pressure to the baby’ feet – an invaluable technique in the middle of the night, when a few hours of unbroken sleep are desperately needed! As well as babies, young children also seem to have a natural affinity for reflexology The courses take 2-3 months to complete and qualification will only be given after 78 hours of study. Students will have 8 days of class work and at least 30 hours home study which must include client treatments and essays. Anatomy and Physiology is part of the class study as practitioners need to understand the body’s systems fully to be able to treat their clients effectively. Christine Quinlan has been running her holistic therapy business called Body Harmony in La Marina for over 12 years and in her previous life in Cardiff she started Body Harmony over 19 years ago after being in retail management for 20 years. Christine was approached by several local community organizations in South Wales to start teaching Reiki and Indian Head Massage and she still goes back occasionally to run these courses and many of her students are now successful practitioners.

Christine has appeared on the very successful Mind, Body and Sol shows here with Reiki and Indian Head Massage, and from that has come several enquiries about people wanting to learn Reflexology, so after liaising with the Reflexology Association, she launched her Reflexology courses here in 2007. There are certain guidelines that must be adhered to when teaching Reflexology and the course has been accepted by the Reflexology Association and graded at NVQ 3 level. All course work and examinations are assessed by a local NVQ assessor before qualification You may just want to have a Reflexology treatment for your busy and stressful life. If you would just like to be calmed and re-balanced, then come along to Body Harmony and enjoy being treated. If you would like to learn Reflexology or just have a treatment, please contact Christine Quinlan at:

Step into Spring at MJ’s Quesada

Time to check T your Padron O

rihuela City Council is calling upon International Residents to ensure that they are in possession of a Padon, if required to be so, and that they are still in date (de Renovación de Empadronamiento). The appeal was launched last week by the Councillor for Statistics, Noelia Grao, and the Councillor for International Residents Sofia Álvarez. In outlining the requirement, Noelia Grao said that "residents have the obligation to register on the Padron if they have exceeded 180 days (3 months) of residency in a municipality, so that they can opt for municipal services, health and education." Residents of EU countries also have to renew their Padron every six years, while those from non-EU countries have to do so every two years. Álvarez added that whilst BREXIT negotiations are taking place, appearing on the register "is not a guarantee, but a step toward guaranteeing the future acquired rights of the British community". She said that Embassies and Consulates also confirm that if dwellers are registered there will be more possibility of them being able to continue receiving free education and health care in the future." The council estimates that there are more than 6,000 inhabitants of international origin who are not currently registered, which will reduce the

income that the municipality receives from the state by about 18 million euros. As such it can be seen that registration is important in order to ensure that these available funds are accessible in order to enable maximum finance for municipal services. Renewals are being carried out until the middle of April with the Local Police, accompanied by translators, also being used to check the data at many registered addresses. Residents who live on the coast can visit the Playa Flamenca Town Hall during normal office hours in order to check, renew or register and there will also be an office opened for residents of Entrenaranjos, on Wednesday, March 29 and April 5, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Vivace’s 10th Anniversary Celebration Concert!

T

he Grand Finale has arrived, after an exciting year for Vivace Classical Choir! During the first ten years the choir has performed music covering three centuries. The choice of music has been taken from that composed by those portrayed on the front cover of their eye-catching poster - from Antonio Vivaldi’s “Gloria” written in 1715 clockwise to Sir Karl Jenkins “The Armed Man” first performed in 2000 - plus many others in between. Musical Director Tom Pargeter says “To choose music representative of VIVACE's first ten years, to fill an hour long concert performance, is more difficult than one would at first think. The difficulty lies in the choice of which piece of splendid music should be discarded, rather than which to keep. I do hope that this celebratory programme contains some of your favourites, and that you enjoy the evening's performance.” This will be Tom’s final concert as Musical Director. After 10 years, he feels the time is right to hand over the baton. He will be greatly missed by the choir, but everyone involved is thoroughly enjoying revisiting the beautiful music and the wonderful memories it evokes. There will be two performances. The first performance will be a charity performance in La Siesta Church on Friday 31st March, starting at 7.30pm. Entrance is €6 to be paid on the door. Doors will open at 7.00pm. From the very beginning, Vivace has been based in San Miguel de Salinas, so it is fitting that the final performance will be in the Casa de Cultura in San Miguel de Salinas on Saturday 1st April, starting at 8.00pm. Doors will open at 7.30pm. Tickets are €5, and can be obtained by telephoning Douglas Brown on 659616356. Tickets can also be got from Bargain Books in San Miguel. An evening not to be missed!

Defibrillators for Almoradí Diputación invests 34,000 euros in Bigastro water network Public Buildings Almoradí Department of Health has introduced Semiautomatic Defibrillators in several public buildings in its efforts "to improve the welfare, the security and safety of residents in the town and in outlying pedanias", according to a statement issued by the new councillor for health, Almudena Albentosa (Cs). Ciudadanos submitted the proposal at the municipal plenary on July 26, 2016 when it was in opposition, as a fundamental tool to save a life. Now, after three months of government and thanks to the good management, the new health councillor, said that the funding has been found to install these life-saving appliances These devices are capable of performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation through small electrical shocks to a person who is in cardiorespiratory arrest when operated by suitably trained personnel. As a result of the initiative Red Cross Almoradí have said that they will provide refresher courses to emergency personnel and municipal workers in their use.

The water deputy from Alicante Diputación, Francisco Sáez, and the mayor of Bigastro, Teresa Belmonte, have signed an agreement in which the Provincial Government will fund the replacement of the public water network in la calle Velázquez and the surrounding area. The project, which was originally included in the 2016 water efficiency budget, will cost 34,000e. As part of the work to be carried out, 142 meters of new 90-millimeter polyethylene pipe, two new fire hydrants and two ductile iron pipe crossings will be installed. The works have been agreed following complaints from local residents who say that the water pressure in the area is minimal and certainly not enough to provide a suitable supply in the event of any fire. Whilst the Alicante Deputy was in the town he

took the opportunity to visit the president and members of the Community of Irrigators of San Joaquin de Bigastro to look at future improvements that might be necessary at the pumping station, outlet and reservoir system which provides the water to local farmers for irrigation.

San Fulgencio celebrates ‘Day of the Tree’ A s they were unable to commemorate the Day of the Tree on it’s National Day, 21 March, because of climatological reasons, the Department of Environment, Parks and Gardens in San Fulgencio celebrated occasion last week. About 90 students from the I.E.S. La Encantá, accompanied by their teachers and a number of municipal employees, spent Friday morning transferring seedlings and planting small shrubs directly onto the land donated by the Generalitat Valenciana. As they carried out the task council staff explained the importance of the day and how it is vital that they are able to raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests, and trees outside forests, for the

benefit of current and future generations. The plants and seed which the students planted included Oleander, Cartagena Cypress and Casuarina. The Spanish village of Mondoñedo held the first documented arbor plantation festival in the world organized by its mayor in 1594. The place remains as Alameda de los Remedios and it is still planted with lime and horse-chestnut trees. A humble granite marker and a bronze plate recall the event. Additionally, the small Spanish village of Villanueva de la Sierra held the first modern Arbor Day, an initiative launched in 1805 by the local priest with the enthusiastic support of the entire population.

By Bar rie Mahoney

Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper.

panpipes, I asked? Sadly, he did not. He grinned and pointed to a button on his handlebars. He pressed a greasy, green button and the blissful angelic sounds of panpipes sounded from somewhere near the exhaust of his ancient moped.

He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

Alberto, the knife sharpener, travels all over the island, visiting towns and villages where he thinks people are in need of his services. As I had a pair of secateurs, as well as an ancient yet effective long armed trimmer that were both as blunt as a butter knives, I retrieved them and handed them to him. I wondered if they were too far gone to be rescued, but he smiled, nodded and started the small generator that was attached to his moped. The generator whirred as he ground, smoothed and manicured the rusty metal on the long-neglected secateurs, whilst I stood back and admired how well the moped had been converted. As well as a small generator, the moped had a grinding wheel and other gadgets added, all powered by the generator, to assist in the process of sharpening and grinding.

The Perpetual Knife Sharpener

I

always admire people who get off their backsides and do something worthwhile with their lives. People, who have an idea, recognise a niche in the market and attempt to fill it with their own hard work, imagination and effort. Maybe their initiative will lead to something larger than they initially imagined, or maybe it will remain as a useful, but small business. The important thing is that they had a dream, and they succeeded in realising their dream.

Several minutes later the secateurs were completed. They looked shiny and felt as sharp as the day that I had bought them. Alberto then moved on to the long arm trimmer, which I had thought about replacing for some time. This was a much bigger job, and he skilfully ground, smoothed and sanded before he was satisfied with his work. He asked me for some oil, commenting sadly that a teenager had stolen his can of oil earlier that morning. I handed him a can of ‘Three-in-One’. Alberto nodded, as if approving of my choice, and lathered both tools generously with oil before handing them to me. He grinned a toothy smile as he collected the cash.

It had been haunting me for several years. The sound of panpipes when I was least expecting it finding its tuneful way through open windows or when I was quietly tending the garden. The problem was that I could not link the sound to anyone or anything. At first, I thought that maybe a neighbour’s child was practicing the flute, or a piccolo. Possibly, it was the early onset of insanity, or one too many, since I could not find anyone else who had actually heard it. Some considerable time later, I heard a similar sound in our neighbouring town, but that turned out to be a delivery of bottled gas. Anyway, it was not exactly the same sound, which I would recognise anywhere. A few days ago, I finally discovered the source of the sound. It comes from a travelling knife sharpener who uses the sound to warn and attract potential customers of his arrival. I caught him in the act one afternoon when I was pruning a tree. Our boisterous dog, Bella, suddenly heard the noise in the distance and was determined to rescue me from the creator of this strange sound. I stood in the road expectantly watching as the sound became louder and louder. Eventually, an ancient moped came into sight carrying quite a large

elderly man. Sadly, he was not actually playing the panpipes that I had imagined, but the same sound was coming from somewhere at the back of his moped.

I asked for his business card or mobile number just in case I wanted to contact him again, as I have several ancient tools in need of some care and restoration. Alberto had neither, but told me that he would be around again in a month or so. He covers most of the island on his moped with generator at the ready, so I guess it will be some time before we see him again.

I waved the man down, and he eventually came to wobbly stop. I asked him what he was doing and where he had come from. It transpired that he was a knife sharpener who had travelled from Las Palmas to sharpen knives, scissors and all manner of cutting instruments that require his services from time to time. Its only a narrow margin though, both have the same match points but the jags have more leg points. These two teams will meet each other at the Tavern’s home ground on 20th April for their league fixture, which has been brought forward as nearly all the Jags are away on the 27th, some in the UK and one of them playing in the Spanish Nationals at Gandia!

Another good result although we lost 7-5 to Quesada who were top of the Winter League at the time. It was definitely a Hadaway day as both of them won. Shirley did by one with great help from Phil Pape, Carol Smith and Kathy Manning and Dave managed a super win with only 24 shots in 18 ends. So well done the other three....... of course as you might guess, it was his three girls, Jean Perchard, Barbara Forshaw and Janet Parsons. Our other Scotsman hammered his way to a well earned draw so good bowling, John Mallet, Mike Smith, Mo Kidd and Mo Taylor. The Berleen didn't fare too well this week. Let's just say they lost.

Horadada Bowls Club by Fred Trigwell Result of Horadada’s first Valencian Champions League match against Country Bowls Herons. Horadada winning on two rinks and the Mens Singles as well as the overall shots, 125 to 95, Points Horadada 8 the Herons 6. Well Done Horadada, a good win away from home.

San Luis Bowls Club by Sheila Cammack Just as the spring season starts, cool weather & winter woollies are back again! Wednesday 22nd Winter League away at San Miguel a real game of two halves. For a long time it seemed we might only win 2 points from Keith Jones’ rink. However everyone (win, draw or lose) worked hard, through the last few ends, to pull back the shots for a very positive result; points 9-3, close shots 83-79. Winners: Ann Holland, Keith Phillips, Sabrina Marks, Mal Hughes 16-15, Irene Everett, Vic Slater, Neil Morrison, Peter McEneany 2020, Lynne Morris, Jo Pering, June & Keith Jones 22-15, Shirley Verity, Ray Clarke, Jules Pering, Russell Marks 16-12. With 4 matches to go, this result has moved us into 1st place, just 1 point ahead of Quesada so we have to keep fighting right to the end! The Berleen team just missed out this week. The Club Championships, held over the extended weekend, were great entertainment for the spectators. There was some excellent bowling and really close matches that went right to the last/extra end. The results were: Ladies’ Singles winner: Kath Reid, r/u: Margaret Morrison. Men’s Singles winner: Russell Marks, r/u: Julian Pering. Ladies’ Pairs winners: Kath Reid & Sheila Cammack, r/u: Ann Holland & Pam Lockett. Men’s Pairs winners: Steve Simmons & Julian Pering, r/u: Ray Pollock & Giuseppe Galelli. Mixed Pairs: Kath Reid & Tom Hill, r/u: Sabrina & Russell Marks. Mixed Triples winners: Sabrina Marks, Keith Jones & Russell Marks, r/u: Lynne Morris, Roy Cordell & Tom Hill. Mixed Rinks winners: Steve Simmons, Sabrina Marks, Keith Jones & Russell Marks, r/u: Ros Holmes, Christine Brooks, Dave Blackie & Scott Malden. Drawn 2 Wood Pairs winners: Ros Holmes & Phil Hasler, r/u: Dave Blackie & Peter Fuller. On Thursday 23rd we had the great pleasure of hosting the Bowls England Tour, English President’s Team. There was much hilarity & some good bowling, San Luis won 4-3, but friendship won overall. Friday 24th VCL, SL Falcons were home v La Marina. A good start to the season 10 points-4, 140 shots-70. Winners: Pairs - Jan & Brian Pocock 26-10, Trips - Margaret & Neil Morrison, Derrick Cooper 24-9, Rinks - Pam Lockett, Les Bedford, June & Keith Jones 21-13, Rinks- Ann Holland, Vic Slater, Sabrina & Russ Marks 36-4. Emerald Isle Bowls Club By Elwyn Morris Monday saw the rearranged Premier 20 final being played, against Quesada, with teams home and away, but with both teams under strength. The final maybe lost some of its edge, but in the end the result finished in a victory for Quesada, the outcome a 6-2 win, well done Quesada Wed the winter league game brought Vistabella to the Isle. In a great game the visitors took the spoils 8-4 aggregate 78-81 as well as the Berleen game 15-13 The last remaining final of the internal comps took place with the Pick and Mix final taking place between F Close & J Parkes against K Jolliffe & P Cresswell. Keith and Peter won the game well done to you all in final We are now looking forward to winter league conclusion and start of summer leagues.

RIVAL TO THE EXTREME 19th at Safari Resort S. Africa: the par 3 Cecil Peak, Queenstown, New Zealand. 4,500ft above sea level, and a green, if you can spot it, 1,476ft below. Once the helicopter has dropped you on the top you have 5 balls and two tee selections, the only other thing needed is a good head for heights.

SIX OF THE LAST 13 winners of the Masters (three of them Phil Mickelson) have been left handed. Apparently if you naturally hit a draw you have more success at Augusta, because several holes require right-to-left tee shots. Draws feature more topspin than fades, making them harder to control. Lefties can hit a cut where righthanded players have to hit a draw, although the way Mickelson played when he won his three Masters, it probably wouldn’t have mattered which hand he used.

I WONDER WHAT the Muirfield gentlemen who grudgingly admitted lady members would have made of Joyce Wethered. Sister of notable golfer and Walker Cup captain Roger, Joyce won the 1920 English Ladies Championship while still a teenager. In nine years she won five consecutive English Amateur and four British Ladies titles. Her forte was accuracy and power; she once shot 75 at St. Andrews with her hickory clubs against a stiff wind, off the back tees. Four years after retiring, (age 24) Joyce came back to beat America’s darling Glenna Colett in the 1929 Womens Amateur Open at St. Andrews 3 & 1. Touring America, playing with the likes of Sarazen and Jones she was feted everywhere. Bobby Jones wrote of her: “I have not played golf with anyone, man or woman, amateur or professional, who made me feel so utterly outclassed.” You can see archive film of Joyce’s swing on youtube. Muirfield members take note, the world’s best swinger wore buckled heels and a cloche hat. AS McILROY RECOVERS from stress fractures Henrik Stenson says the strain caused by the violent modern swing is causing more injuries. Justin Rose, Jason Day and Stenson himself have all suffered recently. Henrik says: “Young players could keep playing for years if they used the swinging action of Bobby Jones.” (Or Joyce Wethered.) cacao, Ketel One premium vodka and Haagen-Dazs ice cream, and was called a Hummer. Jason Day tried one and couldn’t remember what he said in an interview afterwards. CANADA’S ADAM HADWIN intended to spend Masters week on honeymoon after his wedding in April to fiancée Jessica Kippenburger, but after winning the Valspar Championship and qualifying for Augusta, the Tahiti honeymoon is postponed. “I’ll try to get my deposit back, but if not, too bad,” says Hadwin, “I just want that trip down Magnolia Lane.” Let’s hope Miss Kippenburger agrees with him. BECAUSE OF LONG HITTERS, golf courses need to be perpetually lengthened. Perhaps variable-distance balls could help. USGA’s Mike Davis says: “No other sport has allowed equipment to dictate so much change. The Myopia Hunt Club in northern Massachusetts, for instance, has not hosted the U.S. Open since 1908. It measures less than 6,600 yards. If Dustin Johnson had an 80% golf ball he could play from the back tees on this historic golf course that he really can’t play anymore. An amateur with a 100% ball would have a chance of beating a pro with an 80% ball off the same tees.” Probably not Dustin Johnson though. A LITTLE CHUCKLE: Tim, an office employee of Doug’s, knew his boss was out of the office for the day, so he had the brilliant idea of transferring all telephone calls to his mobile and took it with him to play golf. Doug, calling on the 6th hole, said: “How is everything going today?” Trying to muffle the outside noises, Tim responded: “Everything’s fine, all under control, boss.” “That’s great,” his boss replied. “Could you do me a favour?” “Sure,” Tim said. “What do you need?” “Could you speed up a bit?” Doug said. “I’m in the foursome behind you.” Until next time: Happy Golfing. ‘Goal Setting’ Remember what your dad used to say to you “if you do not know where you are going you will not know when you have arrived”. Golf is no different; if you do not set goals and targets for yourself you will not truly know if you have achieved anything. Before each round of golf you should get into the habit of writing down your mental goals for the round to come. These goals will become your mental commitments, which you will strive to achieve over the full 18 holes. These goals should include areas of the mental game where you are struggling, for example: Forgive yourself – if you tend to be hard on yourself Forget bad shots – if you let one bad shot become two or three Stay in the present – if you let your mind drift forward to what may happen or back to what should have been. Stick to routines – if you tend to ‘suck it and see’ Enjoy yourself – if you get down and depressed Breath from the stomach – if you become nervous or agitated You should read these commitments before you start to play, after 9 holes and again after you have finished the round. When you have returned home review the list again in an honest manner and give yourself a score out of a possible 10 for achieving your goals. Any goal achieving a score of less than 8/10 should remain on the commitment card for the next round. For those goals where you were successful remove them from the card and replace them with new goals for the next round but do not forget the previous goals because they need to become good mental habits. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. Torry take a tumble as Martin and Pedreño see Red T Silla CF ........................... 3

CD Torrevieja ................. 0

orry made the trip to Silla, not have played them in a competitive match for many a year, whilst hoping to continue their impressive run which has seen them win 4 of the last 5 matches. They started this match outside the relegation zone for the first time since early season, fully aware that although they had already disposed of Silla once already this season, their opponents record at home was very impressive. Keeper Jose Carlos came to his sides rescue on 15 mins, pulling off a brilliant penalty save, as Torry struggled in these early stages.

A rare Torrevieja excursion

Midway through the half, a Lewis special forced a reactive save from Silla's keeper Lucas, then from the rebound, Borja forced more of the same. Back came Silla, requiring Jose Carlos to make multiply saves from the impressive front man David Verdu. Silly bookings for Calzado and Martin left them on a tightrope for the 2nd half. Soon after play resumed, David Verdu headed wide from a corner, then moments later the same man shot narrowly wide. Disaster struck on the hour mark when Martin received his 2nd yellow card, followed by the requisite red. Numbers advantage soon told as Silla went on the rampage. Both Pucelano and Sergio had glorious chances to put their side ahead, before Carles eventually opened the scoring on 73 mins. Torry were rocking, and it was no surprise when 7 mins later, Carrascosa added the 2nd. It was all too much for Torry's extremely angry manager Pedreno, when his verbal dissent to the match officials earned him a red card dismissal from the dugout. To add salt into the wounds, Carrascosa added his 2nd and his sides 3rd goal deep into stoppage time, leaving Torry to regroup without Pedreno and Martin for next Sundays home match against Torre Levante (check club website for ko time).
