Pontifical foundation Aid to the Church in Need that also has a branch in Malta, has sent more than $7 million in emergency aid and other support to Ukraine since the coun try was invaded by Russia in February.
The Australian office of ACN has con tributed over $360,000 of this support

I think you could consider setting up a Power of Attorney for someone you trust to operate your bank account This would be a general power of attorney with the person nominated to be limited to just withdrawing money on your behalf from just one partic ular account You can then ask for a receipt every time they make a withdrawal for you that would show the amount withdrawn and the bal ance in the account and you can monitor your ac count this way Q My mother passed away three months ago. She left me, her only child, and my two children a large portfo lio of direct shares each. She had asked us not to sell the shares if possible, but to hold onto them, as they would provide us with tax effective income and growth. My children would rather sell these shares, as the income from the sale would pay off a good part of their mortgage If I buy them from my chil dren, would I need to pay any tax on these shares? The amount involved is quite significant.

Centrelink are still treating these funds as his assets and they told us that this would be for five years, and after that they are removed from his asset list. M ayor Lisa Lake is 58 years old, married with an adult son. She grew up in the suburb of Ryde and has lived in Wentworthville now for 32 years Her dad was a boil ermaker who worked at Shell Oil in Clyde and her mum was a primary school teacher She was raised in the Catholic faith and attended St Therese Primary School in Denistone, Our Lady of Mercy College in Ep ping She spent her senior years schooling at Marist Sisters’ Col lege, Woolwich, and her tertiary education at Macquarie University where she gradu ated with Bachelor degrees in Law and Economics in 1986 Lisa Lake told The Voice of the Maltese the reasons why she became involved in pol itics
Lisa followed their lead and joined the Australian Labor Party, and soon after became active in Young Labor “Eventually I was elected on to the Executive of the NSW Young Labor Council and it was there that I began to work with many progressive young students, unionists, and workers. Some of them have risen through the ranks over the years to become great lawyers, union leaders and members of Parliament (including of course our new Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese!).”
It was during this time that our Personality of the Month, acted for several fathers and grandfathers of local Maltese families These men were migrants who had come to Sydney in the 1950s and 1960s and found work at the asbestos cement factories in Camellia, among them James Hardie and Wunderlich. With a reputation for hard work and loyalty, these men were readily employed by these companies to work on their factory floors and were exposed daily to heavy concentrations of air borne dust containing asbestos. In later years they contracted serious and often fatal illnesses such as asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma It was Lisa’s job to interview them about their working lives in Malta and Aus tralia, their diagnoses, and their suffering, and prepare lengthy statements for their damages claims in the Dust Diseases Tribu nal. (Cumberland Council continues to honour these gentlemen at a Workers Memorial Day held annually in May at the Holroyd Brickworks ) In 2012, spurred into action by moves to close down and abolish much loved community pool in Wentworthville, Lisa Lake de cided to turn her attention to local politics and use the skills that she had built up over the years helping others in their elections, to run for election herself She was elected a Councillor for the North Ward of Holroyd City Council and served in that capacity until the Council itself was abolished in 2016 In 2017 she was elected Councillor to the newly formed Cumberland Council in the Wentworthville Ward and was re elected to that job in 2021 Then in January 2022, with a Labor majority now on Council, Lisa Lake was elected by her peers to be Cumberland’s first fe male Mayor

The extraordinary stories of Gorton didn’t start there; they ac tually started at birth Firstly, up till now his birth certificate has never been found. It is thought that John Gorton was born on 9th J ohn Gorton will probably be most known for the extraordi nary way in which he was catapulted into the Prime Ministership. Everything started, as I had written in The Voice (No. 276), when the PM of the time Harold Holt had disappeared in December 1967 during a swim. John McEwen, the leader of the Country Party which was in coalition with the Liberal Party, had been appointed as interim PM, until the Liberal Party, of which Gorton was a member, selected a new leader.
I am amazed that Gorton was not chal lenged on this while he was Prime Minis ter, especially after he himself had revealed in 1968 that he had been born in New Zealand, the same year he became prime minister. Some argue that Gorton in fact was never even eligible to serve in parliament 2 Before entering politics, Gorton had gone to England to study history, politics and economics at Oxford University, aiming to become a journalist Upon graduation, dur ing a visit to Spain he met his future wife Bettina Brown They got married in 1935 and came to Australia and to live at Lake Kangaroo, close to Victoria’s border with South Aus tralia, where his father had an orchard called Mystic Lake. During the war Gorton served in the RAAF and had quite a few hair raising ad ventures In Singapore, he crash landed his aeroplane and hurt his face badly. Upon being saved by an ammunition ship, this was sunk by a Japanese submarine, and he floated for 24 hours in a dinghy until being rescued by yet another ship. When he recovered he was taken to Dar win where he had an emergency landing with his plane on a sandy beach Later, he had a third potentially fatal accident when his plane flipped during take off T he choice of leader on 9th January 1968 fell on John Gorton The very next day he was sworn in as Prime Minister He immediately had to resign from the Senate, as an Australian Prime Minister had to be a member of the House of Representatives (the lower house) This means that initially, Prime Minister Gorton was not even a member of parliament After his Senate resignation, Gorton contested the election for the seat of Higgins of the House of Representatives (the one that Harold Holt used to represent), which he won on 24th February 1968, and a week later on 1st March was sworn into the House.1

After about 20 years, his father told him he had actually been born in Wellington, New Zealand, and from then onwards John Gorton (the son) started using that place name to apply for important activi ties in his life, such as when wanting to be a pilot, going to col lege in Oxford and joining the Royal Aus tralian Air Force (RAAF) But apart from this, it seems that he kept this information to himself
The father is named as John Robert Gor ton and his mother Alice Sinn. However, his father was in fact John Rose Gorton
The split between Gorton and his party finally ended when he was accepted back as a member in 1999. In 1977 he was knighted John Gorton died at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney on 19th May 2002. He was 90 years old The Voice of the Maltese

On 13th August 1971, Gorton published the first of a series of articles on his time as PM, and was accused by McMahon of divulging cabinet secrets He was asked to resign, which he duly did. He remained in parliament until 1975 even after the tables were turned and the Labor Party was in government, but by then the division between himself and the Liberal Party was becoming a chasm. There was much mutual loathing between him and Malcolm Fraser, and after the lat ter became leader of the party, Gorton re signed from the party

The next day, the Liberal Party had a de bate and held a vote of confidence in the Prime Minister, that resulted in 33 33 Gorton declared that this was not a vote of confidence, and resigned In a subsequent election for leader of the party, William McMahon was elected, and surprisingly John Gorton put his hand up for deputy leader He was also elected From then, Gorton started serving as the Minster for Defence, and was noted for his opposition to Australian troops being sta tioned outside the country, and criticised the defence forces as being unprepared

On 2nd October 1983, his wife Bettina, with whom he had three children, died of cancer Ten years later he married Nancy Home
In that year, he was so against the deci sion of the Coalition in the Senate to block supply to the Labor government of Gough Whitlam, and the subsequent decision for Governor Kerr to appoint Malcolm Fraser as an acting Prime Minister, that he en couraged Australians to vote for the Labor Party and not the party of which he was a member for so long and even led He himself sought election as an inde pendent, but was not successful, and imme diately retired from politics, although he remained a public figure, especially on radio and television programmes, and other activities such as the controversial cam paign for the legalisation of marijuana
When a swing against the party tran spired in the 1969 (House of Representa tives) and 1970 (half the Senate) elections, this hostility to him only increased.
In 1971, there was some friction between the army and the Department of Defence on Vietnam, and Malcolm Fraser who was then the Minister of Defence was accused of being disloyal towards the army Fraser resigned from his position, and the next day accused Gorton in parliament that he did not deserve to occupy the office of Prime Minister
Prime Minister Gorton was in favour of increasing the responsibilities of the Aus tralian Commonwealth, resisted increasing the Australian contribution to the Vietnam war (against army advice), promoted the use of nuclear energy (with Australian ura nium) and generally the exploitation of Australian natural energy resources by Australian companies, provided free health care for hundreds of thousands of poor people, increased handouts to the needy and introduced different bands for income tax depending upon income On the other hand, he maintained the pol icy of aboriginal assimilation into the pop ulation, and the system of direct interven tion of the Commonwealth of Australia in the education, health and housing sectors He strongly opposed the concept of abo riginal land rights, arguing that this might lead to separatism With time, the ranks of enemies to his rule started swelling, especially within his own (Liberal) party Their objections were several policies that were seen as diverg ing from the party’s traditional values, for eign policy, his style and general actions and, above all, a suspicion that he had Labor sympathies
Gorton entered politics when putting for ward his candidature for the Victorian Legislative Council (that state’s upper chamber of parliament) in 1949 as part of the Liberal and Country Party (LCP) that had just been set up, and almost got elected He had greater success a year later when he was elected to the Senate of the Aus tralian Federation as part of Menzies’ Lib eral and Country party coalition. In 1958 he became a Minister for the Navy, and a Minister for Works and Education in 1963 Five years later he became Prime Minis ter His style was relaxed, speaking his mind and a tendency to be unorthodox in what he says, and not too worried about his dress taste Gorton was careful to have a life outside of work and found the time to go for a swim, play tennis, attend parties after hours and have a chat with friends He had a reputation for not necessarily accepting advice from the top brass of the public service, and had a habit of consult ing directly further down the ranks, which created tension with the upper levels of the public service.

Mgr Philip Calleja, the founder of the Migrants Commission in 1950 died on 16th August at Dar tal Kleru in Fleur de Lys, at the age of 93 For more than 70 years he also occupied the position of Director of said Commission and worked tirelessly for Maltese emigrants and in later years, also for migrants in Malta Until two years ago at the age of 91, the Mgr. was still attending reg ularly at Dar L Emi grant to offer his service Mgr Alfred Vella, his successor as director in 2003 who had worked with him for about 18 years, de scribed him as a “per severant” person always determined to help those in need Mgr Calleja, also known amongst old timers as Dun Philip used to make himself available at the Dar next door to the en trance of Upper Bar rakka, to give advice or assitance to whoever needed them. It was only because of the pandemic that he suspended this service Philip Calleja was born on 8th December 1928 in Valletta and was ordained a priest on 2nd August 1953 His first pastoral work was mainly with the children of Val letta but in 1956, Archbishop Mikiel Gonzi appointed him Deputy of the Office of Marriages, of the Archbishop's Curia and in later years held various other posts in the Curia, including administrative sec retary and chancellor In 1950 due to the exodus of Maltese em igrating to other countries, he founded the Migrants Commission within the Maltese Catholic Action movement in response to the great exodus of Maltese people to other countries He was appointed as its first director In 1967, Philip Calleja became Rector of the Jesuit church in Valletta, where he gave priestly service throughout his whole life, so much so that he used to call it "my church." Two years later he was appointed Monsi gnor and organised, and also led the first Convention of Maltese Migrants, for which thousands of emigrants came to Malta He was very well known for his work among uprooted people, first as the cham pion of post war Maltese migrants and their families and then as the leading pio neer defender of refugees seeking protec tion and help in Malta. He offered assis tance to those making plans to live abroad and through the Commission also helped immigrants and refugees in Malta He led by example, even hosting migrants in his Valletta home He built Dar L Emigrant in 1971 in Castille Square, a living monument to the Maltese migrants. The Dar has currently become a centre for information and assis tance to many refugees In the 1990s Mgr Calleja dedicated him self to the needs of the first groups of peo ple reaching Malta seeking international protection and solidarity, and under his in spiring and assiduous leadership, during the decade the Emigrants’ Commission catered for almost 3,000 asylum seekers from 39 countries, de fending their refugee rights and making sure they had a roof on their heads. He was committed to providing shelter for refugees, so much so, that by 2020 the Com mission had 14 houses that sheltered around 400 refugees He made several visits to Australia
According to Fr Lawrence Attard, a migration researcher and historian, the his tory of migration from the Maltese islands, especially post war migration, is now to a great extent the his tory of the Emigrants' Commission He said, “The Commission was providentially fortunate in that, since 1953, it has had as its driving force Mgr Philip Calleja, who, since then, has dedi cated his priestly life to migrants and to all people whose life has been affected by emigration.”
In a tweet, Archbishop Charles Scicluna said Mgr Calleja “was truly a brother to our migrants: MIGRANTIUM FRATER! [migrant brother] May he Rest In Peace!”

The Eurogroup President stated that whilst recognising the beneficial measures for families and businesses, the Maltese economy has recovered well and is strong He also announced that Malta would be given €300 million in financial assistance, which according to the Government’s plan would be used for the country to continue to fight off actual economic and financial challenges and maintain the rhythm of growth and recovery.
D uring a bilateral meeting that he hosted at his Min istry in Valletta with the Minister of State for Exter nal Affairs and Culture of India Meenakshi Lekhi, Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade Ian Borg said that Malta currently has 112 companies or private in vestments from India He added, however, that it is necessary that in trade Malta continues to develop the relationship it has with India, and also sees to in creasing its exports there Minister Ian Borg said that after more than 57 years of bilateral relations there is even more poten tial whereby these relations can be amplified and rein forced He said that despite the difference in the size of the two countries, both have vibrant economies that should be exploited in the best possible ways for the benefit of both peoples When it comes to trade, the minister believes that particularly in the sectors of information and techno logical communication, pharmaceuticals, and even the film industry, there are many opportunities where joint strategic collabora tions can be made As an EU country, Malta welcomes the improve ment in the relations be tween the EU and India even in light of the ongoing global challenges, and the minister reiterated that Malta fully supports the strategic partnership be tween the EU and India for trade and free market, the digital economy, the circu lar economy, and the changes in climate and ocean governance

P aschal Donohoe, the Finance Minis ter of Ireland and President of Eu rogroup praised Malta’s economic performance and its useful contribution to Eurogroup meetings and recognised the Maltese Government’s commitment that despite the difficult context and the pres ent new economic challenges, the coun try’s unemployment rate is below 3%
He noted the importance that both governments give to the cultural sec tor and stated that Malta looks forward to intensifying the cultural co operation and collaboration between both countries

According to Luigi Spina, di rector and founder of Golden Buckle International who ad dressed a news conference in Malta along with Tourism Min ister Clayton Bartolo and Edu cation and Sports Minister Clifton Grima, barrel racing was an “adrenaline rushed” sport, and he believed many Maltese would enjoy the four day event “It will also be an event for families and people who have a love for sports, horses, and adrenaline,” Spina said The event would be broadcast live on several sta tions, notably in the USA and Australia among oth ers and should attract millions of followers
Tourism Minister Clayton Bartolo said that Malta would continue to invest in sports tourism events as they attract people from all around the world He said that after the lull in tourism during the pandemic, It is now bouncing back.
The ’Golden Buckle’ event in Malta is to feature several world champion riders from 10 countries, including one from Malta They include eight of the greatest athletes in the industry, among them two women, Jordan Briggs and Ashley Schafer, Pete Oen and Tyler Rivette.

The Spartans finished their adventure hav ing surpassed three qualifying rounds to be come the first Malta representatives in history to achieve it. The adventure was fine while it lasted Ħamrun end their historic run in Europe Meanwhile, Malta’s U/16 team (pic tured above) participated with con siderable success in their first World Championships in Volos, Greece They started with a 9 7 win voer the USA and then brushed aside Kazakhstan 13 3 to top Group F to qualify to face Group G winners Turkey for a place in the top eight. However, they found the Turks much too strong in the Gold/Platinum Group and lost 8 14 Next, they played Egypt for a place in the positional play offs from ninth to16 and won 8 6 to again face the USA. This time they lost 6 10 and finally met Brazil and suffered a 7 9 defeat to finish 12th U/16s 12 in their first world Championship
In fact, after holding reign ing Champions Hibernians to a 1 1 draw in their open ing match, they came out guns blazing in their second game against newly pro moted Pieta Hotspurs and hit the target six times with out reply for a 6 0 win Hibernians again start favourites for the title, but besides Valletta, Floriana, and most certainly Ħamrun would be giving them a good run for their money. They kicked off their de fence of the title with the re spective rounds’ top games
