Fort Manoel on Manoel Island
Fort Manoel on Manoel Island in Gzira was built by the Knights to protect Valletta's northfacing bastions from artillery action from the Isolotto in Marsamxetto Harbour. The first stone was laid in 1723, under the patronage of Portuguese Grand Master Manoel de Vilhena under the supervision of world famous engineer Mondion. Although the fort's defining characteristics survived the ravages of time, countless changes were effected over the years to meet the exigencies of military strategies. It also endured numerous direct hits during World War II and was subsequently damaged by a combination of vandalism and neglect. Manoel Island is an island fortress inside the oft-named fortress island of Malta. The star shaped fort was originally constructed by the Knights of St. John in the eighteenth century to a design by French engineer René Jacob de Tigné, as modified by Charles François de Mondion. The Fort is currently being restored along with the other fortifications in Valletta, Sliema and the Three Cities (Bormla, Birgu and Senglea (L-Isla).

Back to square one F
rom July this year, public transport in Malta has entered a new era. The bus company Arriva ceased operation in January 2014, and as of October last year the government chose Autobuses Urbanos de León as its preferred bus operator for the country. The company took over the bus service on January 8 his year, while retaining the name Malta Public Transport. There are a total of 80 different routes that link the different localities in Malta to either major hubs such as Valletta, Mater Dei Hospital and the Airport or to other destinations. Meanwhile, 15 different routes operate in Gozo primarily from the central hub of Victoria Bus Station to various localities on the island. Under the Arriva regime, Maltese citizens residing overseas, returning to their homeland for a visit, were regarded as foreigners and were asked to pay a higher toll. Maltese citizens residing abroad protested strongly against such discrimination not because they did not want to pay higher prices but as a matter of principle. The Malta Government took some notice of their protests and finally buckled when the mighty European Union threatened to take Malta to court. Maltese citizens residing abroad had maintained from the outset that Maltese-born, with a Maltese passport, visiting their homeland should not be pigeonholed with other EU members; showing their Maltese passport should be proof enough. The Maltese living abroad have argued that subsequent Governments of Malta keep playing the residence issue completely forgetting that before migrating most of the Maltese living abroad had paid their taxes and their national insurance contributions as well. Other EU citizens did not. When the July 2015 changes in public transport came into effect, The Voice of the Maltese in Australia, the bi-weekly magazine with the largest circulation of any similar publication, took up the issue of fares particularly about how concessions were being applied and circulated it to some of the readers and others, seeking their opinions. Malta Transport made it known that the KARTANZJAN (60+) is gradually being phased out (the physical card) and is being incorporated into the Maltese Identity Card (with micro) with 60+ and 75+ indicated on the same identity card. Therefore, any new applications for the KARTANZJAN are tied to an identity card that is eventually required to obtain a Tallinja card +60. MT states that to obtain a Maltese identity card, one must have the residency requirement in accordance with Malta’s Constitution. Transport Malta further explained that no other form or identity can be used, for example a Maltese passport, since if the concession is given to Mal-
tese living abroad then by EU law the concession must be given to all EU citizens visiting Malta which amount to slightly less than a million annually. MT argues that this situation would render the Malta Public Transport unsustainable. Furthermore, if a Maltese is visiting Malta for a holiday and would be using Malta Public Transport regularly, it would be more advantageous to purchase an Explorer Card at €21 per week unlimited travel or a 12-journey Card costing €15. It is to be noted that persons not residing in Malta are eligible to apply for the said card and have it delivered to their home address irrespective of the country of residence. Further note that cards delivered outside Malta would need to pay postal charges. Without delving deeper into this issue, we would like to receive more comments about the matter from our readers. So give us your views by writing to us at maltesevoice@gmail.com. Meanwhile, below we publish the first comments we have received
Malta Transport latest
Readers’ Comments So, now Maltese Living abroad are seen as an economic burden to Malta. What about the enormous sums of money migrants remitted to Malta in years gone by for many years? This was not seen as a burden then but was an invisible income that sustained many families. This concern was expressed in the 2000 Convention by French-speaking Maltese who objected to being classified as foreigners on arrival in Malta, in their disembarkation cards at the airport, as they saw themselves coming to their ancestral home. They were not tourists in the strict sense of the word, but visited Malta with distant family ties. If dual citizenship has to have true full meaning, then comparing us to EU citizens, in my view, does not hold water. You are either Maltese or you are an EU citizen. This matter needs to be taken up jointly by the MCC of NSW and Victoria; the same way the issues with SBS is being addressed. Indeed, let us have more comments. The Editors (The Voice of the Maltese)

Maltese self-stereotypes in Malta and Australia (Prt 2)
Following elicitation of the most popular traits, we proceeded with two surveys in Malta (N=336) and in Australia (N=140), asking respondents to rate the extent to which they thought each trait characterised the Maltese on a 7-point Likert scale. The survey was administered to Maltese in Malta on the one hand, and to Maltese migrants to Australia on the other, up to third generation immigrants. We also asked the Maltese in Malta to rate Europeans on the same traits, and the Maltese in Australia to rate both Australians and Europeans alongside the Maltese. For the Maltese in Malta, every trait presented except for laziness received a higher rating than the neutral midpoint of the scale. This means that all traits presented were deemed representative of the Maltese except for laziness. Relative to the Europeans, the Maltese rate themselves more positively on every positive trait, and more negatively on every negative trait. In general, the Maltese in Malta thus hold themselves to be better than the Europeans in various respects, and worse than the Europeans in various other respects. However, relative to Europeans, the Maltese rated themselves much more harshly on negative traits than positive traits. Consequently, the positive typicality of the Maltese in Malta (5.14) stands only slightly higher than the negative typicality (4.84), with a self-stereotype identity ratio of 1.06. Maltese identity amongst the Maltese in Malta is thus marginally positive. For the Europeans, however, positive typicality (4.27) stands rather higher than negative typicality (3.63), with a relatively higher self-stereotype ratio of 1.18. Overall, therefore, the Maltese in Malta hold Europeans in higher esteem than they do themselves (Table 2). For the Maltese in Australia, the Maltese are better than both Australians and Europeans on every positive trait. They are also worse than both Australians and Europeans on four out of the eight negative traits (Jealous, Stubborn, Impatient, Gossipy). Unlike the Maltese in Malta, however, the Maltese in Australia consider the Maltese to be less Indulgent, Competitive and Shifty than both Australians and Europeans, and as Blasphemous as Australians, although more so than Europeans. Consequently, the Maltese in Australia present a higher positive typicality than the Maltese in Malta (5.95) and a lower negative typicality (4.69), with a selfstereotype ratio of 1.27. The positive typicality for Australians (4.46) and Europeans (4.84) amongst the Maltese in Australia is lower than that for the Maltese. And whilst the negative typicality for

Tourism: very positive trends observed I
nbound tourism statistics for June 2015 published by the National Statistics Office indicated an increase of 4.5% in the number of tourists visiting Malta compared to June last year. It reached 187,617. At the same time, expenditure by tourists during the same month peaked at an impressive €165.2 million featuring an incremental spend of €4.4 million over the same month last year. The number of nights stayed by tourists increased marginally to reach the 1.36 million mark. The number of tourists staying in hotel-type collective accommodation, which hosted three out of every four tourists during June increased marginally to reach 134,799 while those staying in private accommodation grew by almost 5,000 or 11.3%. This positive trend has also been observed during July and the first days of August, with Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) CEO Paul Bugeja saying that indications are, that hotels are also quite strong in their booking forecast for September. According to him, the main challenge to keep Malta’s product going is to ensure keeping it continuously refreshed, innovative and active all year round. He also called for more coordination between all stakeholders “Synergies among all stakeholders need to be strengthened more, including
better coordination within all government entities and authorities to ensure the objectives are met. “The main objective is to diversify and extend the season throughout the winter months,” he said. When it comes to Gozo, during August demand has been exceeding supply in all types of accommodation, with Gozo Tourism Association CEO Joe Muscat confirming that the accommodation sector featuring both the hotels and farmhouses is very busy during August. “It is customary for an island destination like Gozo to have the month of August featuring as the busiest period of the whole summer season. More often than not during this month, the demand exceeds the supply in all types of accommodation,” he said.
NSO statistics covering the month of May showed that the Gozitan hotels and guesthouses registered an increase of 8.8% in arrivals and a 13.4% increase in bed nights. For the period January to May the collective accommodation on Gozo registered a cumulative drop of 5% in arrivals and 2.8% in bed nights. Mr Muscat explained the decrease during January and February was due to the fact the two five-star hotels in Gozo were closed for refurbishment. But the drops in the first two months were partially made up for by the increases registered in the March - May period. He said that Gozo is also managing to attract smaller and more exclusive cruise ships that berth off Mgarr harbour for a number of hours, and in fact, 23 cruise ships are scheduled to visit and berth off Gozo during the current year. Mr Muscat the improvement of the Gozitan tourism product is an ongoing process with various projects infrastructural as well as embellishment initiatives, being carried out. *We urge our readers to entice their relatives and friends to register to the MTA e-Newsletter in order to keep abreast with the positive news emanating from the Maltese Islands. CHARLIE CAMILLERI - a Mosta-born Maltese ANZAC MarkCaruana
A
nother Maltese ANZAC who joined the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces was Mostaborn Charlie Camilleri, son of Giovanni and Mary Camilleri of 44 Sda Speranza, Mosta (today known either by its Maltese name as Triq itTama, or commonly known as Hope Street that is still one of the best known streets in the village). Charles was born on August 4, 1895. He left Malta for New Orleans in the United Stats at an early age. His passport application held at the Malta National Archives is dated 17th March 1911. He was then 16 years old and his father signed his consent for him to travel to America. On the boat Liguria were other Mosta passengers all destined for New Orleans, one of whom was a next-door neighbour to Chares, a Giuseppe Muscat, son of Calcedonio. He was aged 17 years. The group arrived in New Orleans on the April 4, 1911. Three years later, in 1914, we find Charles arriving in New Zealand and working as an acrobat with a circusperforming company. On June 4th 1917, Charles joined as a private with the Otago Infantry Regiment of the NZ Army. He was described as being 5 foot 2 inches tall and of dark complexion. He did six months military duties in New Zealand and was then posted overseas where he served for two years in France till the termination of his engagement on December 5, 1919. For his contribution to the war effort, he was awarded the British War Meal and the Victory Medal. A few months before the termination of his engagement, on July 10, 1919 Charles married Hilda May Coscoigne at St Giles London. The NZ 1919 Electoral Roll lists him as a gas fitter residing at Rothwell St, Saltwater Creek, Timaru, while the 1928 electoral roll also lists him at the
same address and his occupation given as linesman. There are no further entries for later years. Could he have left New Zealand? My good friend Joe Deguara tells me that family talk in the Deguara household in Mosta believe that Charles and Hilda moved to Victoria, Australia. Through his good friend Victor, Joe Deguara I also confirmed Charles’ date of birth as the 4th August 1895 and not 1896 as it was incorrectly written down in official records that enlisted Charlie Camilleri a Malta-born ANZAC in the NZ Army. Il-Kardinal Pell u l-Ipokrisija
D
iversi ©urnali madwar id-dinja, kif ukoll il-˙ar©a li g˙addiet (nru. 107) ta' The Voice of the Maltese, irrappurtaw l-intervista tal-Kardinal George Pell fuq il-Financial Times tas-16 ta' Lulju li g˙adda. F'din l-intervista, il-Kardinal ©ie rrappurtat li qal li l-ençiklika (ittra lill-knejjes) Laudato Si' tal-Papa Fran©isku dwar l-ambjent, g˙alkemm kellha ˙afna elementi interessanti, il-knisja m'g˙andha l-ebda mandat minn Alla biex tippronunzja ru˙ha dwar affarijiet xjentifiçi peress li m'hix esperta tax-xjenza. “A˙na”, kompla jg˙id il-Kardinal, li f'dak il-pronom personali kien preΩumibbilment qed jinkludi lilu nnifsu, “nemmnu flawtonomija tax-xjenza.”1 Stqarrija b˙al din minn Kardinal tal-knisja hija sorprendenti g˙all-a˙˙ar, fuq ˙afna livelli. L-ençiklika2 tirreferi g˙al dak li qieg˙ed ji©ri madwar id-dinja, li jinkludi l-impatt ambjentali tat-tni©©is, il-kultura tar-rimi u ttibdil fil-klima, il-problema tal-aççess g˙all-ilma, u t-telfa talbiodiversità. Titkellem ukoll dwar kif qed ti©i affettwata l-umanità, inkluΩ immigrazzjoni, it-tnaqqis tal-kwalità tal-˙ajja, l-inugwaljanza ta' individwi u popli u l-in©ustizzja ta' pajjiΩi g˙onja li stag˙new filpassat minn fuq dahar riΩorsi li ©ew minn pajjiΩi foqra filwaqt li jistennew lill-pajjiΩi foqra j˙allsu iktar milli jistg˙u biex jo˙or©u mis-sitwazzjoni. F'˙afna postijiet, l-ençiklika tirreferi u taççetta l-pariri tax-xjenzati u organizzazzjonijiet ekolo©içi. Tistqarr li l-Knisja ma tistax toffri opinjoni definittiva u li hemm veduti diver©enti anke fost l-esperti. Madankollu ti©bed l-attenzjoni g˙al sinjali li d-dinja qed tittarraf, b'˙afna diΩastri naturali u kriΩijiet soçjali u finanzjarji li ma jistg˙ux ji©u analizzati jew spjegati wa˙edhom.3 Il-Papa jkompli billi jag˙mel il-kaΩ bibbliku u nisrani ta' x'inhu l-obbligu tal-bniedem biex i˙ares id-dinja b˙ala rigal ta' Alla u kif ing˙ata mandat biex jg˙ix minnha u jindukraha.4 L-ençiklika tirrimarka li ma nistg˙ux nistennew li s-suq jew itteknolo©ija jsolvu l-problemi li qed no˙olqu a˙na stess. TeΩortana biex in˙arsu l-impjiegi, id-diversità, l-etika, il-komunitajiet indi©eni u li meta nfittxu soluzzjonijiet g˙al kriΩijiet ambjentali n˙arsu b'mod ˙olistiku wkoll lejn soluzzjonijiet g˙al kriΩijiet soçjali. Tinkora©©ina li nag˙tu kaΩ li n-nies ikollhom saqaf fuq rashom, trasport adegwat, issaqsi jekk wasalniex biex ng˙ixu ˙ajja mg˙a©©la wisq fejn il-problemi n˙alluhom g˙all-©enerazzjoni ta' warajna. Fl-a˙˙ar, l-ençiklika tawgura li jintla˙aq kunsens bejn il-pajjiΩi biex jissolvew problemi li huma kbar wisq g˙al pajjiΩ wie˙ed, b˙all-uΩu llum globalment mifrux ta' ener©ija minn sorsi ffossilizzati. Ti©bed l-attenzjoni g˙ad-dikjarazzjoni ta' Rio fl-1992 li n-nuqqas ta' çertezza xjentifika m'g˙andhiex tintuΩa b˙ala skuΩa biex soluzzjonijiet g˙al-˙sara ambjentali ji©i pospost. Jien f'din l-ençiklika, ma rajt l-ebda pronunzja dwar affarijiet xjentifiçi. Il-pronunzji saru u qed isiru minn xjenzjati u organizzazzjonijiet o˙ra. Il-Papa, wara li jinnutahom, qieg˙ed juri li hemm obbligu talbniedem biex jie˙u azzjoni, u jekk hu nisrani, jag˙ti r-ra©unijiet bibbliçi u l-prinçipji nsara g˙aliex g˙andu jag˙mel dan. Din hija poΩizzjoni morali u politika, u mhux xjentifika.
Il-Kardinal Pell (xellug) f’laqg˙a mal-Papa Fran©isku
Huwa interessanti li ninnutaw ta˙dita li ta l-Kardinal lill-Fondazzjoni fuq il-Politika tat-Tibdil tal-Klima, fil-katidral ta' Westminster f'Londra, fl-2011.5 Fiha mhux biss jistaqsi jekk ix-xjenza dwar it-tibdil tal-klima hijiex stabbilita u kemm hemm kunsens fuqha, imma jirribattiha billi jikkwota lill-matematiku Lonrenz dwar l-impossibilta' li tipprevedi l-futur, lil diversi xjentisti li ma jiffurmawx parti minn dan il-kunsens li ma jaççettawx l-immudellar bil-kompjuter li ji©i kkwotat, igerger li l-influwenzi tax-xemx u tal-vulkani ma jing˙atawx importanza, u jsemmi ˙afna u ˙afna inçertezzi o˙ra biex jitfa’ dubju fuq il-konkluΩjoni li l-bniedem huwa l-ka©un tat-tibdil preΩenti fil-klima. Jien m'inix se nid˙ol fil-mertu, g˙ax dan mhux l-iskop tal-artiklu tieg˙i. Imma l-intervent tal-Kardinal fl-2011, elokwenti, wiesg˙a u mhux nieqes mill-interess, kien wie˙ed purament xjentifiku. Allura huwa l-Kardinal Pell biss, fil-Knisja Kattolika, li jista' jitkellem u jippronunzja ru˙u fuq is-su©©ett? Dakinhar ma kienx jemmen fl-awtonomija tax-xjenza? Din mhi xejn ˙lief ipokrisija. Huwa diffiçli biex nifhem g˙alfejn xi ˙add bl-intelli©enza talKardinal jasal li jg˙ajjar lis-superjur tieg˙i b'dak li jag˙mel hu. Forsi t-twe©iba qeg˙da f'paragrafu 217 tal-ençiklika, fejn il-Papa jirrimarka li xi nsara devoti, bl-iskuΩa tar-realiΩmu u l-pragmatiΩmu, g˙andhom il-˙abta li jirredikolaw stqarrijiet ta' t˙assib dwar l-ambjent. Dawn il-kliem japplikaw perfettament g˙all-gvern preΩenti Awstraljan, immexxi mis-Sur Tony Abbott, li kemm ilu li tela' g˙amel minn kollox biex l-uΩu tas-sorsi ffossilizzati tal-ener©ija jitkompla u possibilment jitqawwa, u inaqqas l-investiment f'sorsi sostenibbli tal-ener©ija. Dan huwa l-oppost ta' dak li hemm fl-ençiklika. B'kumbinazzjoni, il-Prim Ministru huwa ˙abib personali talKardinal Pell. Forsi l-Eminenza ˙ass li kellu jaqbeΩ xi ftit g˙alih! Referenzi

Big Day Out for the NSW Active Maltese Seniors!
A
crisp winter’s start for a visit to the Blue Mountains for very active Maltese Seniors group from Fairfield, in Sydney’s west that is sponsored by The Maltese Community Council of NSW. The group was “blessed from above” with great weather for a wonderful day out visiting the pretty village of Leura where they were able to browse through the many quaint little shops with their amazing wares on display for all to enjoy. Next, the group went to Echo Point where they enjoyed the spectacular views of The
Three Sisters and were eagerly joined for a photo shoot by visiting Japanese tourists. The seniors experienced some easy walks through the bush paths where the wildlife and native plants are so abundant. Of course, all this activity promotes a healthy appetite and so on to lunch at the nearby Katoomba RSL for a smorgasbord lunch. Afterwards the group headed for the Scenic Railway that was an absolute delight to the seniors as most remembered bringing their families when many years before. So much to see and do in this wonderful location. One lady told me “she felt like

Roundup of News About Malta RS2 Chairman, Mr. Mario Schembri (right) with the Prime Minister at the inauguration
New €1m. investment will create 100 new jobs in Gozo
N
ine months after announcing it, and three months after finalising the agreement with the Gozo Ministry, RS2 Software p.l.c inaugurated their €1 million invest in the form of new premises in Xewkija, Gozo that will serve as an extension of the works and services currently provided from its Mosta Office in Malta and create 100 new jobs in Gozo over the next two years. The new state of the art offices of the company, which employs 180 employees at its Mosta-based facility, is a global provider of card payment services, IT consultancy and related services to international and domestic banks, service providers, retailers and other financial organisations. After more than 26 years in operation, RS2 has offices in Germany, USA, Brazil, Jordan and the Philippines. As he inaugurated the new offices a few days ago, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said that thanks to the government’s efforts, Gozo is now becoming synonymous with investment. He added that the Government wants quality work for Gozo. He also pointed out with pleasure that the film company behind the multi-million production, "By The Sea", had released the official trailer that, even from the teaser, one could sense that the splendour of Gozo would travel the world. He said that not only did Brangelina spend around €20 million filming in Gozo, but the movie would serve as a massive promotion for Gozo as a destination to visit. The Minister for Gozo Dr Anton Refalo on behalf of the Gozitan community gave thanks to the investors, represented by the Chairman, Mr. Mario Schembri, and the Minister for Education and Employment, Evarist Bartolo, for making available the site for this new enterprise. He said that the occasion was a cele-
bration of a new beginning for Gozo. “After long years of lack of investment we are happy to have changed that trend and we welcome the investment which RS2 has decided to engage in Gozo.” He hoped it would be a “beacon for other investment ventures in the future.” He went on to say: “In the seventies we saw the industrial estate flourish with light manufacturing activities. Forty years later, our aim is to transform Gozo into a niche for service oriented economic activities. RS2 is a first for Gozo offering a service of global financial cards management.” Dr Refalo explained that the Government has “optimistic plans for Gozo,” adding that some projects have started this year while others would materialise next year and more are on the drawing board. He also mentioned the investment in services through Barts Medical School. “Our aim is to maintain the beauty of the island and to do our utmost to bring back the youths we have lost over the years because of the lack of job opportunities. “We want to reverse the trend of an ageing population and rejuvenate Gozo with new economic activities which in turn will bring youth-related ancillary services,” concluded Dr Refalo.
New national youth policy announced ew initiatives specifically targeting young peoN ple at risk of social exclusion – including those with a disability, migrants and LGBT youths – is to be developed under a new National Youth Policy just announced. It will address all 13 to 30 year olds, and would be implemented over the next six years. It is also aimed at supporting young people in “fulfilling their potential and aspirations” while encouraging their active participation in society. Among its wide-ranging set of action plans, the policy includes the creation of new spaces for young people and youth organisations at local community level and measures to enhance young people’s entrepreneurship prospects. It will also support young people in areas such as health, sports and arts and culture. Education Minister Evarist Bartolo expressed serious concern over the fact that some 1000 young people who left school in 2014 – or 23 per cent of the total – are currently not in education, employment or training (NEETs). He said that nearly half as many young people as are entering university are simply doing nothing once they leave school. “We cannot avoid asking why,” the minister said. Parliamentary secretary for Youths and Sports Chris Agius said that in implementing the new policy, the focus would be on “tangible outcomes”, ensuring that all young people would benefit from the policy.
Maltese Euros go 20%further
T
he results of a study conducted among a group of 37 European countries, including the 28 EU member states that has just published by Eurostat found that when compared to those in other European countries, shoppers in Malta get 20 per cent more goods and services with the Euros in their pockets. A comparative analysis of purchasing power (how much you can buy with your money) shows that a bag of goods costing an average of €100 in the eurozone could be bought in Malta for €83. The same purchase would cost €148 in Norway and just €48 in Bulgaria. The euro area consists of Belgium, Germany, Estonia, Ireland, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Slovenia, Slovakia and Finland.

n 18-year-old youth was critically injured in a re-enactment incident when he was struck with a sword while taking part in a duel in front of guests during a scheduled daily tour of Fort Rinella. The victim was at the end of the sword in the duel with a 25-year-old. According to the Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna chairman Mario Farrugia, the ‘fighters’ had carried out the duel many times before, but a mistake appears to have been made when the victim came in the path of the other fighter’s sword. Mr Farrugia said that all re-enactors had some degree of bodily protection, including facemasks, but the extent of the protection was limited for reasons of “authenticity”. The victim was taken to the Intensive Treatment Unit and is now reportedly on the way to recovery. The police do no believe there was any malicious intent behind the incident.

He explained that there is a history of collapse in the Delimara area not far from the new gas terminal. But Enemalta said the new gas plant is about 350m away from the location of the incident. They have been informed by Electrogas Malta, the consortium building the new gas plant, that all necessary measures were being taken to safeguard the plant according to international best practices.

Festi u piki
F
’Malta u G˙awdex b˙alissa ninsabu fl-aqwa tal-Festi u kul˙add jaf li kwaΩi l-aqwa festi... fejn jid˙ol il-briju, tiΩjin, baned eçç, isiru propju fejn hemm aktar minn kaΩin wie˙ed talbanda. Sintendi fejn hemm aktar minn kaΩin wie˙ed aktarx li jkun hemm ukoll piki kbar bejn il-partitarji taΩ-Ωew© baned ... piki li jissa˙˙u u jis˙nu fil-jiem tal-festi, u li kultant, (g˙alkemm daΩ-Ωmien anqas milli fl-antik), jispiççaw f’tg˙ajjir li mhux darba jew tnejn anke jwasslu g˙all-partitarji ta’ na˙a jew tal-o˙ra li ji©u fl-idejn. Minn xi daqqiet, anke jekk hemm dawn il-piki, filwaqt talbΩonn ikun hemm fejn dawn il-piki jinqatg˙u u tirrenja l-g˙aqda. Hekk se˙˙ fil-Birgu fejn ftit ilu kienet qed ti©i ççelebrata l-festa ta’ San Lawrenz.
Minkejja li din il-festa ti©i fl-eqqel tas-sajf, dis-sena, ˙abta u sabta beda tielg˙a l-ajru u deher biç-çar li kienet ©ejja wa˙da minn dawk il-maltempati li jafu jag˙mlu fl-eqqel tas-sajf. Mhix sorpiΩa li malli l-partitarji Il-Ìirbin jiççelebraw il- tal-festa ta’ San Lawrenz raw ixfesta ta’ San Lawrenz xita ©ejja malajr bdew jag˙mlu minn kollox ˙alli jΩarmaw it-tiΩjin tal-festa biex kemm jista’ jkun jevitaw li ti©ri ˙sara, kif ©ara, pereΩempju, fil-Óamrun Kien hawn li ntwera çar kemm filwaqt tal-bΩonn kul˙add kien lest li jag˙ti daqqa t’g˙id. ’dawn l-a˙˙ar snin parti mill-˙idma tal-Presidenti ta’ Malta dejjem kienet li ja˙dmu favur dawk li huma filbΩonn. Aktar ma jg˙addi Ω-Ωmien aktar bdew jag˙tu importanza lil din il-˙idma, u nistg˙u ng˙idu li la˙qet il-quççata tag˙ha ta˙t il-President preΩenti, l-ET Marie Louise Coleiro Preca li qed tag˙mel emfasi qawwija fuq il˙tie©a li jsiru attivitajiet biex jin©abru l-fondi. Hija tis˙aq dwar il- ˙tie©a tag˙hom biex jintlaqg˙u l-˙afna talbiet g˙all-g˙ajnuna li jsiru lill-Malta Community Chest Fund (MCCF), l-aktar minn nies li je˙tie©u xi kura speçjalizzata fosthom pazjenti li jintbag˙tu g˙all-kura barra minn Malta u o˙rajn li je˙tie©u çerti mediçini speçjalizzati. Attwalment il-Malta Community Chest Fund jaf it-twelid tieg˙u sa minn meta Malta kienet g˙adha tiddependi sewwa mill-Gvern IngliΩ u nistg˙u ng˙idu li l-og˙la personalita’ tal-pajjiΩ kien g˙adu l-Gvernatur Ìenerali. Fil-fatt kien il- Gvernatur Ìenerali IngilΩ, Sir Robert Laycock, li beda jorganizza l-August Moon Ball biex jin©abru l-fondi bl-iskop li jg˙inu lill-Malta Playing Fields Association (MPFA). L-ewwel Ballu sar fi tmiem il-˙amsinijiet u issa l-attivita’ saret parti integrali mill-kalendarju annwali. Fi Ωmien l-a˙˙ar Gvernatur, Sir Maurice Dorman kien hemm diversi istituzzjonijiet filantropiçi li wrew ix-xewqa li l-fondi mi©bura ma jibqg˙ux jing˙ataw dejjem lillMPFA. Konsegwentement, Dorman, iddeçieda li jo˙loq Chest Fund fejn jitpo©©ew ilflus mi©bura mill-Ballu u l-flus bdew jitqassmu lil diversi organizzazzjonijiet u is-

Baqa’ jΩomm l-istess kunçett ta’ qabel li mill-fond jgawdu g˙aqdiet u individwi fil-bΩonn. L-ewwel President tal-Community Chest Fund kienet ilmara ta’ Sir Anthony, Lady Mamo li ©iet segwita mis-Sinjura Buttigieg, meta b˙ala President ta’ Malta kien hemm Dr Anton Buttigieg. Fi Ωmien il-Presidenza tas-Sinjorina Agatha Barbara, saret bidla fl-istatut tal-fond biex issa l-President tar-Repubblika saret ukoll ilPresident ta’ dan il-fond, u minn dakinhar ilpresidenza baqg˙et f’idejn min ikun President tar-Repubblika. MaΩ-Ωmien, il-Community Chest Fund ing˙ata l-isem kif nafuh illum - Il-Malta Community Chest Fund. Sadanittant il-©bir ta’ flus g˙all-fond ma baqax biss jiddependi mill-August Moon Ball, li g˙adu jsir kull sena, u anzi mis-sena l-o˙ra beda jsir ukoll f’G˙awdex, imma minn diversi attivitajiet o˙ra, fosthom forsi l-akbar wa˙da dik tal-Istrina. MaΩ-Ωmien il-Presidenti bdew jag˙tu aktar importanza lill-fond. Bdew jiΩdiedu anke lattivitajiet biex jin©abru l-flus u spinta qawwija ng˙atat mill-ex-President l-Avukat George Abela. Issa l-President attwali qed tag˙mel kull sforz biex il-fond ikun jista’ ila˙˙aq mat-talbiet kbar g˙all-g˙ajnuna li jid˙lu ta’ kuljum. A quick glimpse at Australia
We have a new Speaker
The new Speaker, the 30th of the House of Representatives
V
ictorian Liberal backbencher Tony Smith has been elected as the new Speaker of the House of Representatives, the 30th. The new Speaker was selected by lower house Liberal MPs in a secret ballot a week after the resignation of Bronwyn Bishop. Before entering Federal Parliament Tony Smith was a staffer to former Treasurer Peter Costello. He entered the lower house representing the seat of Casey in 2001 and served as parliamentary secretary to the Prime Minister in the Howard Government. Tony Smith arrived in Parliament House in mid-1990 as Peter Costello’s press secretary, later the then Treasurer made him his senior advisor. Tony Smith battled it out with fellow Victorian backbencher Russell Broadbent, South Australian MP Andrew Southcott and Queenslander Ross Vasta. Mr. Smith won the final stage of the elimination process against Russell Broadbent 51 to 22. Unlike his predecessor, Mr. Smith has confirmed he will remove himself from

party room tactics while he holds the position. “I will not be attending weekly party meetings,” Mr. Smith told Parliament. “It's my view that the Speaker should not only be, but also seen to be, independent of the partisan day-to-day fray.” He said the decision was both symbolic and practical. After weeks of furore surrounding her grandiose use of taxpayers-funded travel perks, Bronwyn Bishop the Speaker of the Federal Parliament resigned while the PM Tony Abbott unveiled a sweeping review into MPs' entitlements, saying a new system would restore public trust. Mrs. Bishop and Peter Slipper are the
two speakers of the Australian House of Representatives to be forced to resign in disgrace. Bronwyn Kathleen Bishop was the 29th Speaker of the House of Representatives between November 2013 and August 2015. She was born in 1942. Elected as a Senator in 1987, she was the first woman president of the Liberal Party NSW Branch. She became the Member of Mackellar in the lower house in 1994. Served as well as Minister of Defence and Minister for Aged Care. In Parliament, the Prime Minister said that the former speaker served with distinction for over 30 years “she has been a warrior for the causes that she believed in”. He quoted John Howard: “politics is hard and unforgiving business but it is amongst the highest and noble forms of public service”. Bronwyn Bishop gained attention for her imbalance in booting MPs out of Parliament: 393 from Labor and seven from the Coalition.
Boats being turned back
nder the Abbott government, 630 asylum seekers and 20 boats have been U turned back, including a group that was returned to Vietnam last month. It was a rear statement by Peter Dutton the Immigration Minister of usually secret details of “onwater operations”. A boat containing 157 Tamil asylum seekers arrived in June last year. There is no doubt that the turn-back policy of the Abbott Government, described as cruel by critics, has dramatically stemmed the flow of asylum seekers boats headed to Australia.

A quick glimpse at Australia
Employment up or down? Since January 166,700 extra Australians have been put into work, giving the Abbott government a reasonable chance of fulfilling its commitment to create one million new jobs in its first five years. There was a pickup in the market for the first time since 2013 as new employment figures released by the Bureau of Statistics show both employment and unemployment climbing. In the three months to July Australia’s unemployment rose from 6 to 6.3 percent. The number of Australians out of work rose to 87,500. The clue to making sense of the apparent contradiction is an increase in the number of Australians changing their status from “not in labour force to unemployed”. Australia’s three biggest states were responsible for almost all of the employment growth since January, with NSW gaining 113,500 jobs, Victoria 27.300 and Queensland 22.600. Elsewhere employment gains have been modest or negative.

Uranium: 31% of the world’s total Australia has the world’s largest known uranium resources - 31% of the world’s total. It is a significant player in the industry with enough mining to be the world’s third biggest producer of the nuclear fuel. Uranium has been mined here since 1954. It has three mines, two in South Australia and one in the Northern Territory. Its production is all exported and comprises about 35% of the country's energy exports in thermal terms. However, the Industry remains small compared with gold, copper and coal, and according to Peter Ker of the SMH, it has endured a severe downturn over the past four years. Uranium became fashionable in investment circles between 2004 and 2008 as awareness of climate change led many to speculate that nuclear power could be large-scale, centralise source of electricity free of carbon emissions. Australia uses no nuclear power, but with high reliance on coal any likely carbon constraints on electricity generation will make it a strong possibility. This year the South Australian government set up a royal commission into the potential for nuclear power.
binding and universal agreement on climate, from all the nations of the world. The government decided it would halve its emissions per person over the next 15 years under a long-awaited climate change pledge. It predicts will cut harmful greenhouse gas emissions without sacrificing the economy. It will reduce the amount of greenhouse gas released into the atmosphere by 26-28 per cent by 2030, based on 2005 levels. Mr. Abbott said the government was focused on growth and jobs, and the pledge was a “good, solid, economi-
cally responsible, environmentally responsible target”. Environment Minister Greg Hunt said the target showed “we do the right thing by the planet and we also do the right thing by families who are concerned by cost-of-living pressures and power prices”. Labor Leader Bill Shorten said the government was trying to “drag Australia backwards on climate change” and it must demonstrate how the target was consistent with the 2-degree warming scenario. Australia is among the worst greenhouse gas polluters per capita in the Western World.

The love and life of Jo Jo Zep - a talented musician M
altese-born Australian singer, songwriter, and saxophonist Joe Vincent Camilleri, known for his work with Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons, was born on May 21, 1948. He was one of ten children and his family moved from Malta to Australia when he was a toddler at the age of two. He has recorded as a solo artist and as a member of Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons and The Black Sorrows. Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons' highest charting single was "Hit & Run" from June 1979, which peaked at #12; Jo Jo Zep's "Taxi Mary" peaked at No. 11 in September 1982, and The Black Sorrows top single, "Chained to the Wheel", that peaked at No. 9 in March 1989. Joe Camilleri has been rocking the pubs and clubs of Australia for more than four decades, as well as making close to 30 CDs and producing countless more. He has produced records for The Sports, Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons, Paul Kelly & the Dots, The Black Sorrows, Renée Geyer and Ross Wilson. Australian music journalist, Ian McFarlane, described him as "one of the most genuinely talented figures in Australian music". As a member of Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons, Camilleri was inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame in 2007. Joe Camilleri grew up in Port Melbourne and listened to rock music on the radio. His mother called him Zep and he became known as Jo Zep. He began his music career in 1964. The Maltese born musician who visited Malta on a number of occasions, was featured recently in the SMH Good Weekend when Bernadette Clohesy interviewed him and his partner Angela Clark. Angela 48 years, a jewellery-designer

Joe’s family are. They all get together often and, if Joe is working she visits them without him. They love her and are really glad to see their big brother happy. Joe Camilleri has a big family himself now; he has five children aged between 38 and four. Joe has been married twice, the first time when he was very young. His second wife is the mother of his three adult children. Angela does not agree that Joe is obsessed with women; “he is actually very respectful, he was wild in his younger days, but that is all in the past. “He’s never been a heavy drinker”.The women who
come up to him after the show do not worry Angela at all, “I am the one who goes home with him”. “He will not marry me,” she says laughing. She adds that it is the happiest both of them have been for a long time. It’s an easy relationship that was built firstly on friendship. At the same interview Joe Camilleri talks about how he started work at twelve-and-a- half in an abattoir so he knows what hard work is and what it is like to struggle. He says that the first time he laid eyes on Angela, it was a nice experience. She was beautiful and very bubbly, “there is a spirit there that you can’t help being attracted to. “We are both silver foxes, so we know what it is like to be in a relationship that has faced difficulties. I am really set in my ways”. Joe is not sure why his relationship with Angela works, “No one else laugh at my jokes, she makes you feel that you’re the most important person in the room.” A feature length DVD Music Documentary about Joe, titled Joe Camilleri: Australia's Maltese Falcon, traces his Maltese background and the rise from Jo Jo Zep and The Falcons to The Black Sorrows through to present day, which includes the making of The Black Sorrows' stunning collectors edition of Crooked Little Thoughts 3CD, 78 page book set. The Maltese community in Australia are indeed proud of this highly talented musician, more so, because he acknowledges his ancestry.

Sunshine Cross record 5-win run halted
unshine George Cross, the team in Melbourne associated S with the Maltese community (formerly George Cross), following five successive victories in the Victoria Championship (PS4 NPL 1 West), had their run of five victories halted at home on Saturday when they were beaten 2-1 by Moreland City. Their unbeaten run had helped them to climb to seventh in the league ladder, a position they hold despite the recent loss. They stand on 30 points from 24 matches, a position they managed after their 5-3 away success at Nunawading City in Rd 23. They have won eight times in this campaign.
Fourth successive positive result for Green Gully Meanwhile, the other club with connections to the Maltese community in Melbourne, Green Gully are also doing considerably well. Own goals earn Hibs Super Cup over Birkirkara
n Malta, Champions Hibernians took revenge on IBirkirkara who beat them in last season’s FA Trophy final by returning the favour to beat them 2-1 to win the pre-season Super Cup. The final is played annually prior to the start of the season between the Champions and the winners of the FA Trophy the previous season. Birkirkara took the lead on 12 minutes through Miccoli direct from a corner, but Hibernians levelled in the 32nd minute through a Zach Muscat own goal from a Clayton Failla corner, and then got the winner three minutes from half time from another own goal by scored by Vucanac. age them in whatever they choose to specialise in, being studies, sports or whatever. Rose Sacco from the Reskeon Seniors Group at Merrilands Community Centre proudly indicated to me the achievements in sports of her 16-year-old granddaughter, Madison Conwel who in July trained with the full Australian netball squad that was preparing for the Netball World Cup just ended and which Australia won for teh 11th time. Madison was one of four players from Queensland. Others were from NSW, Victoria. It was just reward for a kid who has been showing great improvement in this particular sport. She was not in the final World Cup team, but her chance will surely come. Madison has been playing netball and in-
door netball since the age of five. She has represented Queensland on numerous occasions and even formed part of a number of Division 1 representative teams for different Queensland Associations. But after playing for Queensland in the Australian National Junior competition, last December Madison received her greatest honour when she was selected to represent Australia in the Junior (Under-16s) Indoor Netball Tri-Nations Tournament in Perth, July 12-8. The teams played a mix of sixa-side and seven-a-side games. Madison played centre and wing attack against New Zealand and South Africa and was even named vice-captain of the U/16s. Teams from Australia, South Africa and
Madison Conwell seen in action New Zealand contested the series in the 6-aside and 7-a-side disciplines. In the 6s Madison was in the team that beat New Zealand, and then formed part of the team in the grand final against South Africa where Madison scored 30 goals out of a total of 47 scored by her team. Unfortunately the Aussies lost the final 53-25 and received the silver medal. Two days later the Australian team took part in the 7s (Australian) game. They went throughout the competition undefeated and in the Gold final defeated South Africa 7324. So this time Madison and her team added the gold medal to the silver.
