“Don’t just think about it. Do it!” "Dr. Corbett was the one surgeon who made me feel calm about the endeavor I was about to take. He did this with his smile, his talent, and his honesty. He made me feel the impossible was achievable. I love, love, love my new body. His staff was inviting and they cheered me on and they made me feel assured that I was in good hands. They made me feel just as confident as he did in the choices I had made in choosing his team. Thank you for my new confidence, body, and outlook on life." — Patient’s Testimony

Letter from the Editor There’s no denying Kentucky Derby 144 was an unforgettable, historic event. Despite the unexpected all-day rain and flooding, 157,813 people attended the day’s waterlogged festivities at Churchill Downs Racetrack – the eighth highest attendance figure – on what was deemed the wettest Derby on record. A whopping $225.7 million was wagered on the race day program (at the track, online and elsewhere), which exceeded the record set last year by eight percent. And, Justify became the first horse to win the Kentucky Derby without racing at the age of two years old since 1882, when a chestnut gelding named Apollo beat the favorite Runnymede by half a length. Justify won the Run for the Roses by two and a half lengths, winning his owners, jockey Mike Smith and trainer Bob Baffert $1,432,000. (FYI: This was Mr. Baffert’s fifth Derby victory.) The sloppy track caused some spectators to scrap their original picks and cast their bets for Kentucky Derby 144 elsewhere on rain-induced whims, but for those who picked the favorite, Justify paid $7.80 on a $2 bet. How’s this for luck? A Texas resident won $1.2 million after placing an $18 pick-five bet races 8 through 12 – which included the Kentucky Derby – from Retama Park in Selma, Texas (which means she not only made a mint but also missed the deluge of precipitation many of us experienced here in Louisville). The Austin native, who didn’t want to be identified, picked Limousine Liberal, Maraud, Funny Duck, Yoshida and Justify. While horse racing is the reason for Derby season, the numerous events and soirees play a fabulous part, too, thanks, in part, to the attire attendees opt to wear. As Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer pointed out while at the Kentucky Derby Festival’s Celebrity Day at The Downs, the week offers the best in horse racing, but it’s also “the biggest fashion show in the world.” All of us at The Voice-Tribune hope you enjoy the hundreds of images capturing the best of the Kentucky Derby and subsequent celebrations you’ll find in this, our Derby Wrap-Up Issue 2018.
