Just a few kilometers past the bustling city of Tulum, Mexico, beyond a beautiful stretch of jungle where the world-renowned Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve begins, there sits a rather unremarkable dock. It’s a gathering place for a small coterie of local fisherman and tour guides who make their living in the vast expanse of mangroves and lagoons that make up the Reserve’s eastern borders. If you’re a guest of KanXuk Luxury Resort, there’s a boat at the pier waiting just for you – and it will take you to a place like no other in the world… It’s nearly impossible to imagine just how secluded and private KanXuk Luxury Resort is until you make the journey there. Though the 10-acre property is located approximately 37 kilometers from the popular beach town of Tulum, it might as well be a thousand miles away. KanXuk is the first and only luxury resort in the Sian Ka’an Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most protected areas in the world. It’s like having a hotel right in

20 T H E V O I C E O F L O U I S V I L L E |

the middle of Yellowstone National Park – only in place of canyons, forests and hot springs, KanXuk sits amidst shimmering lagoons, palm tree jungles and vast vistas of the Caribbean Sea. To get there, guests can travel by SUV, helicopter or boat. The latter provides the most intimate experience. There’s no better way to introduce yourself to the matchless beauty of Sian Ka’an than the unforgettable 40-minute expedition through the mangroves.

The Reserve is a world unto itself, all but untouched by modern civilization. Only the rare dock jutting out from the dense jungle indicates any trace of human inhabitance. As you glide across the calm waters, you’re treated to landscapes few people have seen – stands of wild flamingos, flocks of great blue heron and reddish egrets and perhaps a crocodile or two. The abundance of wildlife is a reminder of how the world once was. It’s no wonder Sian Ka’an is a mecca for global adventure seekers in search of some of the best diving, boating and fishing experiences on earth. When at last the KanXuk pier emerges in the distance, it’s quickly clear you’ve arrived at someplace special. If not for the wind turbine and communication tower that stand tall above the treetops, there’s nothing to see but the jungle that stretches for miles along the coast. The property unassumingly inhabits the surrounding terrain, and that’s precisely what makes it unique. It’s a stark contrast to the crowded tourist spots of Tulum, where the intrusions and distractions of the modern world have slowly taken hold. KanXuk is nearly as untouched and pristine as it was when the Maya ruled so many hundreds of years ago, making it one of the most beautiful and secluded luxury resorts in Mexico, if not the world.

SUMMER 2016

WHITE SAND, BLUE SEA The name KanXuk is a combination of two Mayan words – Kan, meaning “four,” and Tzuk, meaning “corner.” Together they mean “Four Corners,” representing the four corners of the world, which the ancient Maya believed were the first acts of God’s creation. It’s a fitting name because it’s easy to think of KanXuk as an Eden of sorts. The property sits amid the lush green jungle, hedged by the blue lagoon on one side and the crystal waters of the Caribbean Sea on the other. Though the grounds are immense, there’s no high-rise hotel or sprawling complex to be seen. KanXuk was created with the utmost attention to privacy and seclusion. The two-story Main Villa is the most prominent construction, with the bungalows, cigar bar, restaurant and spa comfortably situated amongst breaks in the palms. The walking paths that traverse the grounds are partially (and deliberately) obscured by overhanging fronds, creating a true sense of solitude no matter where you are on the property. And because maximum occupancy is only 20 people, guests have more than ample space to relax and seek a secluded spot of their own. Cloistered nooks and private spaces are carved through the jungle at every turn. And then there’s the beach – 200 meters of pristine white sands with soul-stirring views of the ocean, visible from practically anywhere on the property. A natural

SUMMER 2016

reef provides a barrier to the waves, making the water along the shore calm and inviting. Canopy beds and chaise lounge chairs sit readily at the water’s edge. In the shade of a cluster of palms, there’s another lounge space with covered beds as well as hammocks, creating the ideal spot for enjoying the ocean breeze. With average sea temperatures that rarely dip below 77 degrees, it’s a beach lovers’ ShangriLa. You can walk for miles without seeing anything of man-made order but for a few abandoned beach clubhouses lost long ago to the encroaching jungle.

“IT’S NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO IMAGINE JUST HOW SECLUDED AND PRIVATE KANXUK LUXURY RESORT IS UNTIL YOU MAKE THE JOURNEY THERE. THOUGH THE 10-ACRE PROPERTY IS LOCATED APPROXIMATELY 37 KILOMETERS FROM THE POPULAR BEACH TOWN OF TULUM, IT MIGHT AS WELL BE A THOUSAND MILES AWAY.”

BEAUTIFUL INSIDE AND OUT While the outdoor spaces are breathtaking, the indoor environments are no less impressive. Guests can choose from nine accommodations, each with its own unique charm. There are five luxury rooms in the Main Villa as well as four ocean-side bungalows, one of which has its own private garden. Each is elegantly appointed with beautiful, handmade tropical wood furnishings and design details inspired by the indigenous culture. There’s a fully-stocked (and complimentary) mini bar and safety deposit box for guests’ convenience. The beds are topped with exquisite hotel luxury linens. The bath and beauty products are by London’s Molton Brown. Only the best will do. And though other hotels in the area bypass such regional luxuries as air conditioning, television and Wi-Fi, KanXuk revels in them. Every room has its own remote-controlled AC unit and a wall-mounted HD TV with 150 satellite channels. Perhaps most impressive, there’s 40 megabyte Wi-Fi internet throughout the entire property. No resort in the region – and very few residences for that matter – can say that.

The rooms in the Main Villa emanate luxury. Vaulted ceilings give the spaces an airy feel. Marble and granite countertops with vessel sinks in the bathrooms add to the elegance. The balconies sit above the tops of the palms, providing wide views of the stately grounds. And there’s no shortage of beautiful and unique design touches throughout, be it wall pieces of intricately stacked stone or gorgeous glass pendant lights that mimic the glow of candlelight. The bungalows, while no less luxurious, offer a more elemental experience. Located beachside, the thatch-roofed palapas were constructed using techniques first used in Mexico centuries ago. Meanwhile, the interiors convey a stunning infusion of natural elements and modern form and function. The deep natural browns of the rattan wood floors and countertops perfectly complement the brighter tones of the walls and bedding. Beautiful walk-in showers with wall-to-wall tile give the bathrooms a spalike feel. The decks easily seat two, if not four or five. Best of all, you’re just steps from the beach and the gentle crash of the waves against the shore.

A WALK AROUND THE GROUNDS The luxury doesn’t end with the individual accommodations. The Main Villa is a work of beauty to behold. The lounge has room for more than 15 guests, with full-length sliding glass doors along the east wall that open up to the patio overlooking a splash pool. A rooftop area, complete with bar and hot tub, is large enough for small parties. From there, you get another spectacular view of the grounds and the surrounding jungle, further emphasizing the resort’s remoteness. A short stroll from the Villa is the cigar bar, where guests can enjoy the finest cigars expertly paired with liquors and libations. Comfortable couches encircle the deck’s focal point – an exquisite fountain that pays artful tribute to the region’s Mayan heritage. Water trickles over four illuminated symbols signifying earth,

wind, fire and water. The basin is black to represent the underworld. The fountain never overflows; instead, it endlessly recycles the water that streams forth from its fount, purified. It’s easy to imagine the many lively, late-night gatherings sure to come, with guests cozied up to the bar or lounging around in comfort. A bit deeper in the palms, accessed by a secluded path, is the KanXuk spa. It’s here where guests can rejuvenate and refresh themselves with massage therapies and natural body treatments designed to draw on the energy of the resort’s surroundings. Treatments are focused on the belief that emotional, mental and physical health are all entwined. The masseuse is a true master of her craft, combining holistic massage with local elements like chocolates, herbs and flowers. The soothing sights and sounds of the nearby ocean provide a sublime backdrop. The centerpiece of the grounds is the restaurant, which can accommodate up to 50 with tables both inside and out. Featuring handmade furniture and fixtures along with plenty of natural light, the decor and atmosphere are the perfect accompaniment to the resort’s natural setting. The wood-burning brick oven out back is a welcome and rare addition to the kitchen. However, eating in the restaurant is more of a suggestion than a requirement. Of course, the tables are always set, but if guests would prefer to take their meals on the beach, at the cigar bar or in their rooms, that’s always available upon request.

Luckily, as with the resort’s every other detail, the food has also been given very careful consideration – and with great success. KanXuk offers a personalized dining experience steeped in the culture and culinary traditions of the region, yet enhanced by a diverse assortment of worldly influences. Guests enjoy an ever-changing menu of gourmet cuisine using mostly locally-sourced and sustainable ingredients, some of which are grown onsite in the chefs’ garden. Both international and local favorites are highlighted, and there’s an unmistakable vibrancy to each dish served. The chefs are free to create and innovate, and it’s obvious they’re enjoying themselves. Whether it’s a simple ceviche or a rack of lamb, the chefs never fail to add their own unique and flavorful twist. The kitchen is as much an artist’s studio as it is a place of cookery. Each dish served is a masterpiece, with every detail carefully considered and always a firm focus on satisfying the palate. Complementing the food is an impressive wine and liquor selection boasting high-end labels from around the world. Of special interest to bourbon-lovers: It’s the only resort in the region to stock Pappy Van Winkle – and the 20-year-old Family Reserve, no less. What’s more, due to the resort’s modest maximum occupancy, the menu can be tailored to guests’ tastes. With enough lead time, the kitchen can meet practically any culinary request. The chefs are also very knowledgeable of most dietary tendencies and restrictions. Be it organic, gluten-free, kosher, paleo or vegetarian, the chefs relish the opportunity to create unique and delectable dishes to meet those demands.

AT ONE WITH ITS SURROUNDINGS

What’s equally as impressive as the privacy, comfort and amenities KanXuk offers is the fact that the sprawling 10-acre property is completely self-sustaining. There are 48 rooftop solar panels located throughout the complex as well as a wind turbine, which on windy days generates most of the energy. For the rare overcast occasion, there’s an emergency generator, but it’s hardly ever used. Wind, solar and battery easily provide the electricity needed to power the entire resort 24 hours a day, and in the middle of the Reserve, that’s no small feat. To put it into perspective, the nearby fishing village of Punta Allen, home to nearly 500 permanent residents, only has electricity twice a day during certain times. Beyond the power, nearly every other aspect of the property was designed with maximum eco-efficiency in mind. A plumbing recovery system and bio-digesters clean and recycle water before returning it back into the ecosystem.

SUMMER 2016

A natural underground cistern provides the resort’s water, which is filtered to the highest purification standards for safe drinking and bathing. While similar properties have to bring in their fresh water by truck, KanXuk has it in abundance, right on site. Even the manner in which the resort was constructed is a testament to a deeply-held respect for its natural surroundings. Rather than fell trees that presented obstacles to building plans, the palms were carefully dug up and relocated. In fact, the decking on the pier was built around one majestic palm that would have been too difficult or harmful to move – the trunk erupts from a carefully cut hole in the planking, providing an apt symbol of KanXuk’s remarkable respect for nature. Even the fences around the property were built so as not to obstruct the migration paths of sea turtles and crabs. No detail has been overlooked.

I AM YOU, YOU ARE ME. While the beauty and seclusion of KanXuk cannot be understated, the true heart of the resort is the people. A small yet dedicated staff attends to guests’ every need – and always with grace and the warmest of smiles. The mantra “It is my pleasure” rings throughout the grounds as staff achieve a high level of service to match the resort’s elevated expectations. There is never a doubt that everyone at KanXuk – from the head of guest services down to the ladies on the housekeeping staff – is committed to ensuring every guest’s stay is a most comfortable, satisfying and memorable one. If you have an urge for breakfast on the beach, they will make it happen. Drinks and appetizers on the pier at sunset? Done. KanXuk’s service vision is one of loyalty, responsibility, integrity and friendliness, and each aspect is met with an easygoing nature that makes guests feel both comfortably at home and luxuriously pampered at once.

In a walkway in the Main Villa, there’s a beautiful Mayan design inlaid in the stone wall. Faintly reminiscent of the well-known Yin Yang symbol, the design represents an ancient principle that perfectly captures the spirit of KanXuk: “Lak’ech Ala K’in.” It means “I am you, you are me.” It’s a statement of oneness and unity, and the more time you spend at KanXuk, the more you realize this concept has been integrated into every facet of the property – from the way guests’ needs are attended to by the staff with poise and class to the manner in which the grounds have been integrated into the jungle without spoiling the untouched splendor of the Sian Ka’an Reserve. There’s a true sense of belonging and of wonder that sticks with you long after your stay is over. You leave with a deepened connection to the earth, the sea and the incredible people of the Yucatan. KanXuk changes you for the better, and that’s something the world could certainly use much more of. Lak’ech Ala K’in indeed. For more information, please visit kanxuk.com.

21C MUSEUM HOTEL OKLAHOMA CITY 900 N. Main St. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 73106 Opened in 2016 Rates start at $199 Number of rooms: 135 Notable Amenities: Contemporary art museum, Mary Eddy’s Kitchen x Lounge, fitness center, free weekly docent tours, spa

We in Louisville know and love 21c Museum Hotel for being one of the preeminent hotels in downtown Louisville; however, that location is only one of six incarnations across the country. With museum hotels in Cincinnati, Bentonville, Durham and Lexington, the 21c brand is quickly becoming national, and with its Oklahoma City property having just opened, its expanding its reach even further. 21c Oklahoma City is located inside the redeveloped space of Oklahoma City’s historic Ford Motor Company Assembly Plant, a four-story structure built by Henry Ford as a Model T assembly plant. “Because nearly all 21c Museum Hotels are historic rehabilitations, they’re each inherently unique,” asserts Matt Cowden, 21c Oklahoma City General Manager. “Built in 1916 as a Ford Motor Company Model T assembly plant, 21c Oklahoma City takes full advantage of the scale and openness of the original building, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.”

Please note, as 21c Museum Hotel Oklahoma City just recently opened, photographs are of other 21c properties around the country.

The hotel indeed capitalizes on the building’s history, and the 21c team has striven to maintain its rich legacy. “Throughout the space, you’ll find that

finishes and furnishings are inspired by the assembly line and technology of the automotive industry. Many of the building’s original features have been restored, repaired or recreated to bridge the old and the new,” describes Cowden. Despite the innovation of the new location, 21c Oklahoma City will deliver the renowned service and hospitality visitors have come to see as synonymous with the illustrious brand. “Each 21c Museum Hotel is unique, but guests have come to expect the same genuine hospitality, thoughtful design and culinary creativity no matter which 21c you may visit – each anchored by a contemporary art museum showcasing thought provoking exhibitions, interactive site-specific installations and a full roster of cultural programming that’s responsive to and reflective of the community,” Cowden contends. And Oklahoma City is just the latest entry in an expansion series that’s bringing 21c to new markets. Its Nashville location is set to open in early 2017, and projects in Kansas City and Indianapolis are under development. If it’s culture, nuance and innovation you’re seeking, it’s absolutely impossible to go wrong at 21c Museum Hotel.

One of the most prestigious estates in the world, the Biltmore Estate is located in Asheville, North Carolina, and boasts two onsite properties at which guests are able to stay. The Inn on Biltmore Estate is the classic luxury getaway, while The Village Hotel on Biltmore Estate offers a more casual environment and easy access to outdoor activities. Though both allow guests slightly different albeit magnificent experiences, both share one thing: They are located on this historic property and offer visitors an unparalleled opportunity. Getting the chance to wake up on the Biltmore Estate is the epitome of luxury and something Mallorie Flynn, the Biltmore’s public relations coordinator, sees as truly unique. “Individuals should consider the Biltmore because you could literally visit the estate for a stay and never leave the property during your vacation and have all you need – shopping, dining and more,” she enthuses. “The estate is a multi-day experience, with multiple tours and outdoor activities as well. There’s also a winery within steps of the Village Hotel and not far from The Inn.”

And then of course, there’s the centerpiece itself: the Biltmore House. The largest privately-owned home in North America, the Biltmore is the resplendent vision of George W. Vanderbilt and features the family’s original collection of furnishings, art and antiques. It is a 250-room French Renaissance chateau and the crown jewel of the estate’s 8,000 acres, which include gardens designed by Frederick Law Olmstead. There’s no shortage of beauty to discover, and guests are sure to enjoy marvelling at the stellar nuance and history overflowing at the Estate. For those parents who may be wary there won’t be enough activity for their children, the Biltmore also offers a children’s audio guide and treasure map for the kids, and, as Flynn asserts, “Kids love the Farmyard animals and outdoor activities.” Undoubtedly, the Biltmore offers not only a great experience for the kids but also a truly special opportunity that simply has to be experienced to be believed.

French Lick Springs Hotel Opened in 1845 Number of rooms: 443 Rates start at $179 Notable Amenities: 1875: The Steakhouse, heated indoor/outdoor pools and hot tub, 24-hour fitness center, riding stables, casino

Just off the beaten path in Southern Indiana lie two glorious destinations perfect for a weekend escape or a more prolonged getaway. West Baden Springs Hotel and French Lick Springs Hotel, both part of French Lick Resort, are evocative not only of modern luxury and recreation but also deep and wondrous history. The sites formed in 1845 when people first discovered local mineral waters said to cure everything from arthritis to malaria. Thus, two distinct health resorts grew up in these tiny towns. Since then, they have transformed into worldrenowned facilities featuring two firstclass spas as well as the famed casino. Recently, the resort underwent a $560 million restoration – the largest historic restoration project in Indiana history and one of the largest privately-funded preservation projects in the United States. “The enormous undertaking transformed the historic hotels, restored classic golf courses and built a PGA Championship-worthy one atop one of the highest points in Indiana and brought in an exciting entertainment option for guests,” relates Dyan

Duncan, public relations manager for French Lick Resort. The resort has long been esteemed for how tremendously family-friendly it is. With indoor and outdoor pools, bowling and a KidsFest Lodge, French Lick Springs Hotel in particular is the ideal getaway to keep the kids entertained. There are also 14 dining options, so everyone is sure to be pleased. Additionally, the architecture of the two buildings is guaranteed to astound guests of all ages. “West Baden Springs Hotel has what was once the world’s largest free-span dome until the Astrodome was built,” Duncan explains. “It features a Pompeian style decor with a priceless Rookwood fireplace. French Lick Springs Hotel features hand-painted murals, gold leafing and scagliola.” Historic tours are offered to further elucidate to guests the true splendor of the buildings. However, that’s just one of a number of activities that are offered year-round to keep families coming back for their luxurious escapes. For, as Duncan maintains, “French Lick Resort is just an hour from Louisville, yet it feels like it’s a world away.”

THE GREENBRIER 300 W. Main St., White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia 24986 Opened in 1913 Rates start at $319 Number of rooms: 710 Notable Amenities: 19 restaurants and lounges, 26 retail shops, fitness center, indoor and outdoor pools, casino club, mineral spa

At a 2,000-foot elevation in the remote White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, sits the famed resort The Greenbrier, “America’s resort.” Renowned for its lush spa and enthralling casino, The Greenbrier is not only a place for ceaseless merriment but also a treasured getaway for families where they can feel right at home but in the lap of luxury. “I think one of the overall impressions that most visitors experience – especially first-time visitors – when they approach the front gate and they walk through the lobby, the overwhelming feeling is, ‘They don’t make ’em like this anymore,’” touts Erik Hastings, director of communications at The Greenbrier. Indeed, the architecture is simply stunning. With pristine design nuance that speaks to the structure’s aweinspiring history, the aesthetic of The Greenbrier alone is reason enough to visit. However, there is plenty more to keep guests dazzled. In addition to the world-class golf and tennis facilities, there is also a movie theater, bowling alley, culinary demonstrations, historical tours and even glass blowing demonstrations. But at the heart of all of this is the mission to make visitors feel welcome. “We certainly exceed guests’ expectations when it comes to Southern authentic hospitality,” Hastings maintains. “That

is what we’re really talking about. The 1,800 team members at The Greenbrier truly care about the guests, and we like to say it’s ladies and gentlemen serving ladies and gentlemen. And frankly, we’ve been doing that for 238 years.” Indeed, though the current building was constructed in 1913, the first recorded guests at the site arrived in 1778 to “take the waters” in hopes of restoring their health. Ever since then, The Greenbrier has become beloved by millions – and at all times of the year. “We started out as a summer resort years and years ago,” Hastings recounts. “And because we’re a family-friendly resort, summer has always been our peak season, but what’s interesting is that our shoulder seasons – spring and basically fall – are growing … And in the winter, we do 60 spectacular days of holiday cheer. We do tree-lighting ceremonies every Saturday in December. And the number of lights, of decorated trees – we have an entire department of people who work year-round to present our Christmas decorations and our holiday programs.” Without question, no matter if it’s in the heat of June or the chill of December, The Greenbrier is a spectacular home away from home sure to keep you entertained, rejuvenated and tremendously relaxed.

A secluded island located off the coast of Georgia, Sea Island has been a beloved getaway for families for generations. With two lodging options – The Cloister and The Lodge – Sea Island is the only resort in the world to have received four Forbes Five-Star awards for eight consecutive years. “Sea Island is the ultimate family travel destination due not only to its deluxe accommodations but also its extensive array of engaging activities including everything from kayaking and sea turtle walks to special themed weekends, events and festivals,” asserts Merry Tipton, director of marketing and communication at Sea Island. In addition, one of the most enticing aspects of Sea Island is its rich tradition of golf. It is home to three championship golf courses, including Seaside and Plantation, home of the PGA Tour’s RSM Classic, as well as the nation’s finest Golf Performance Center. Indeed, as Tipton points out, it is the traditions of Sea Island that make it so very special. “Traditions are part of the fabric of Sea Island and have charmed

visitors since the doors opened in 1928,” she describes. “A sampling of the traditions includes Bingo on Tuesday and Thursday nights – a favorite activity among guests – where gentlemen don jackets while ladies and children wear their ‘Sunday best.’ Dining has also been a long celebrated Sea Island tradition; from buttery corn muffins and Gold Brick Sundaes to local shrimp and fresh fruit cobbler, many of the favorite dishes were created years ago and continue to be requested by hundreds of guests who come back to Sea Island year after year.” So whether it’s for a refreshing vacation to recharge or an exciting time full of activity and sport, the resort is sure to be the perfect place for the whole family. “Sea Island has long allured enthusiastic travelers, those looking for a resort that offers multiple experiences, and families looking to bond and reconnect,” Tipton maintains. “For 88 years, Sea Island has been dedicated to providing extraordinary service and gracious hospitality, which is why so many guests choose to return year after year.”

T

he dream vacation can take many forms, and despite the differences, each is as invigorating and renewing as the next. Maybe you wish to travel abroad and walk among the scenic history of Rome, or perhaps something more diverting like taking in the sun on an Australian beach is more captivating to you. Maybe your plans take you a little closer to home, to the natural wonder of the Grand Canyon or the urban spectacle of Manhattan. Whatever the destination, dreams take more than empty wishes to come to fruition, and despite the misconception that the era of their utility has passed, a good travel consultant can make all the difference in turning those dreams into reality. No one knows this fact better than Linda Dean, current vice-president of retail branch operations at The Travel Authority. Armed with more than 30 years of experience in the travel industry, Dean began work for a major airline in the reservations, customer service and training development departments and remained there for 16 years. This work gave her invaluable hands-on experience when she decided to transition to a travel consultant position. Subsequently, she started her own travel agency, which she eventually sold to The Travel Authority in 2006. With this profound understanding of the travel market, Dean has carefully cultivated her reputation as an unassailable expert in the field. Due to the ubiquity of the internet, the ease with which someone may book a ticket is more than a little alluring, but Dean says that there is one crucial component that the average traveler lacks: “We were required to 62 T H E V O I C E O F L O U I S V I L L E |

VO I C E -T R I B U N E . C O M

go through extensive training when hired by the airlines, and I did additional onsite training when transitioning to a travel consultant position.” Before opening her own agency, Dean completed New Agency Owner Training, ARC reporting training and Trams back office accounting training, which are all technical ways of showcasing the depth of her knowledge and experience. “In college, I had taken courses in small business management and contract law. It is important to constantly continue expanding your destination and product knowledge through vendor training webinars and familiarization trips,” says Dean. “You can sell a product or destination with more confidence and passion once you have experienced it.” Dean goes on to say that modern travel consultants enjoy unprecedented access to information and education – resources that afford consultants hard-won skills that can make what may be a herculean task of logistics for the average consumer a snap for a qualified consultant. “Today, consultants can obtain degrees in hospitality through most colleges, which gives them some background into the travel world, and there are a few travel universities in some cities.” Dean also relates that many companies, including The Travel Authority, offer extensive in-house training opportunities to expose candidates interested in a travel career to the various aspects of working for a full-service travel management company while instructing them in all the requirements of researching, putting together packages and making the sale.

In Dean’s opinion, these steps are absolutely essential to compete with the internet and the paradigm-shifting omnipresence of smartphones. “Twenty years ago, you didn’t have many travelers using the internet for research. The number of options for cruise and tour travel was definitely more limited, and the airfares were much less complex.” In contrast, the amount of information today is overwhelming, and due to having had such a long career in the industry, Dean is able to illustrate the difference between then and now better than most: “When I started with the airlines in 1978, there were only five fare classes. Now, you can have up to 26. Today, we see a more educated consumer contacting us. They have a feel for what they want to do but want to consult with a specialist to make sure they are choosing the best destination, best product and best excursions.” What it comes down to is that customers no longer want a cookie-cutter experience. Instead, they seek a more personalized and customized trip tailored to their specific needs and desires. “They demand behindthe-velvet-rope experiences, and our specialists have the connections to provide this. It is very important today for travel consultants to become specialists in destinations, products or lifestyle travel so that they can fulfill these needs. As I see it, there will always be a need for travel consultants,” opines Dean. Naturally, as people start to plan their vacations, they want to make sure this precious time is spent in the best possible way and that their expectations are not just met but exceeded. It is absolutely possible to book a SUMMER 2016

simple round-trip air ticket on the internet or a quick three-night cruise. The longer the stay, however, the more complicated the affair becomes, and that is when Dean says a travel consultant can and should step in: “If you’re planning a 12-night trip across multiple destinations in Europe or a luxury cruise, most people want advice, want someone to handle the arrangements for them, have everything planned out for them with confirmed components as well as free time to explore.” Beyond the relatively simple matter of airfare, a good travel consultant is able to arrange all aspects of leisure travel for their clients including but not limited to car rentals and hotel stays as well as packages affording customers access to popular tourist attractions and other amenities. Additionally, they can provide insight into aspects of travel that many don’t think to consider. “When traveling abroad, travelers must have a passport that is valid for at least six months after the date they return,” says Dean, an example of a common mistake that befalls many a client. “They must also check all countries they are visiting to see if a visa is required. This is something that is constantly changing, so they need to check each time they are traveling abroad. Are there any state department travel warnings they should be aware of? Are any inoculations needed? Are they concerned about Zika virus?” There are, of course, more obvious needs such as foreign currency as well as adapters or converters that clients will need for electronics like smartphones, computers and iPads.

SUMMER 2016

“Consultants can provide all this information and more and obtain foreign currency for clients at much more favorable rates than at the airports. We advise travelers to be vigilant about their surroundings and to dress to blend in and not stand out as a foreign tourist, which could make them an easier target for pickpockets.”

benefits: “What if you are in a remote area and need to be taken by medevac to a hospital for treatment or repatriated? This becomes extremely expensive. Travelers insurance often affords people a global concierge service if you need to find a doctor, hospital, lost or stolen wallet or passport, translation services and more.”

In fact, the safety of clients is of paramount importance to any travel consultant worth their salt. That is why they recommend the oft-neglected travel insurance, both for domestic and international travel. “You never know what can happen,” says Dean. Sometimes, despite the best planning, things can go wrong, whether weather becomes inclement or there is an unexpected injury or illness. It is also part of the consultant’s job and livelihood to be aware of potential terrorist situations and disease outbreaks for those choosing to travel abroad. “We are there to help you, get necessary changes made to travel arrangements and get you back on track with your travel plans as quickly as possible. It is important to know that travel consultants are the customer’s advocate,” says Dean.

In light of this information, there will always be a need for travel consultants as customers want advice. They want someone to validate their choices and weed through the overwhelming amount of fares and destination packages on the internet. They want an advisor to assist in planning their trip while keeping them involved in the planning process. People’s lives are busier than ever, and for many, time is money. When they can have someone do all or part of the planning for them, it makes the trip more enjoyable.

Not only does travel insurance usually protect clients’ investments from nonrefundable cancellation penalties when freak last-minute situations arise, but most policies also provide trip interruption coverage and lost or delayed baggage coverage. Travelers insurance becomes even more important when traveling abroad as most people’s medical insurance does not cover them outside of the U.S. Dean, of course, can speak to its myriad

Dean agrees: “Work with a professional travel consultant, ask for referrals from friends and family who have used one that they were especially pleased with. Tell them about yourself, your likes, dislikes, what activities you enjoy and the types of experiences that are important to you. This will allow them to customize your vacation experience just for you.” Travel is a life-enriching experience, and is ultimately more fulfilling than the accumulation of material things. Fortunately, this truth is encouraging individuals to make the most of their time away from home, and more and more people are indeed choosing to make their dream vacations come true. And because of that, travel consultants are here to stay.

ittners designer Joseph Woods, in collaboration with designer Chad Cobb, took on the task of making this traditional, Jeffersonianstyle estate in Glenview a design masterpiece. He brought the style Bittners is known for into each room while infusing visual rhythm and tension with signature modern art pieces. The home is a stylish masterpiece fit for any occasion. First, Woods got to know the family. “I think that’s really the most important part of the design process. Really getting to understand who the clients are, how they want to live in their house and what’s really important to them.” Woods learned that they have children and pets and were casual in how they wanted to live their lives but still wanted to have a well-appointed home, great for entertaining. The family loves spending time together playing games and creating puzzles. They also love contemporary art, great design and enjoying their home with family and friends. Additionally, they are all very digitally connected. “Everyone has a smartphone, a tablet or a laptop. We wanted to incorporate that into the way they lived in their home,” states Woods, so he created usable spaces that were not only stylish but also conducive to their digital lifestyle. Upon entering the foyer, you are greeted by the first exquisite piece of art. “We looked for contemporary, cool paintings or lithographs that have great color and great movement, modern in their feeling, which is juxtaposed in this traditional Jeffersonianstyle house,” explains Woods. He worked very closely on this with the homeowners because he knew the art needed to speak to them personally. “Art has to create emotion in your heart. Your art is a statement, kind of like jewelry.” To the right of the entrance is the library with its warm charcoal grey walls, which embodies the

multipurpose-feel Woods imbued into this home. It evolved in a “convertible” space where they could gather, bring their laptops, play cards, read the paper or use as a secondary dining area. “That’s what’s so important about having those conversations,” says Woods. “The multipurposes really dictated the way we ended up furnishing the room.” Core to the room and its functionality is a beautiful custom-made table that was produced at Bittners’ on-site woodshop by their master craftsmen. It’s a prime example of fine furniture making. It is handmade from reclaimed wood with rustic metal ties holding the impressive support planks together. But there’s more. “On the edges of the table, we’ve embedded GPS plugs where you can plug in your laptop and your smartphone. So this is the perfect marriage of high quality, traditional, beautiful furniture, and technology at its best.” Next is the grand living hall, and it is truly a sight to behold. The artwork above the fireplace jumps out at your eye with its intriguing bright blue geometric lines. Custom herringbone oak flooring sets the stage for the beautiful ornate marble mantel. Layers of textures, fabrics and textiles are woven into a seamless, beholding art form. The room itself is hugely expansive, so much so that the couch was made custom to fit the scale of the space. “You have to fill the volume of the space up with appropriate furnishings,” says Woods. Woods also had the geometric-patterned rug custom-fit for the room. It’s one of four area rugs Bittners had tailored for the home. It’s comprised of wool and silk threads sewn to create square and octagon overlaying patterns. “The fact that it was made of more contemporary materials but that it was contemporary with that geometric pattern – that was a great thing that helped meld that traditional and contemporary feeling that we were going for in the whole house,” says Woods of the custom rug. continued on 78

The chandelier in the living hall is not only unique and beautiful but also a testament to the ingenuity that is the Bittners brand. While its hand-forged metal arms with raw crystals hanging down from them are no doubt beautiful, the matter of delivering electricity to the fixture was a challenge. There were no existing electric lines in the ceiling and a heating exchange runs through the floor above. “That was some really delicate work, but the electrician did a beautiful job, enabling us to add that great fixture to the living hall.” Woods added recessed lighting and chandeliers to a number of rooms in the home to brighten it up and give it an updated feel. These are small examples of one of the principle advantages of working with Bittners designers: the vast array of resources they possess. From a custom couch and rug to knowing the right contractors to call to do an otherwise tricky electric job, after 160 years in the design business, Bittners knows how to productively utilize their array of resources to meet their clients’ needs. In the dining room, we see again modern art bringing tension to the room. Its navy blue concentric lines demand your attention. Woods feels that’s what good art does. “It doesn’t go with one thing in that room; it stands on its own, and that’s exactly what good art should do. It’s meant to make people sit and think, ‘Hmm. I wonder what the story is behind that art?’” The wallpaper is of note as well, as it was the starting point for the aesthetic of the entire dining room. It’s a unique natural grass cloth fiber with metallic strands within it, with a further metallic backing. “It’s not only traditional grass cloth, but it’s actually got a contemporary kind of feel to it because of the metallic nature.” The dining room features another beautiful rug Bittners had custom made for the home. “The homeowners, particularly the wife, talked about her love of texture. From the rugs, the furniture, the window coverings – she wanted a lot of texture in the rooms because it makes a room feel warmer. And when you mix them with the types of furnishings that you have in a room, it makes your

home feel collected, and that’s what really turns it from a house into a home.” The bottom of the stairwell is one of the most artistic alcoves of the home. The balusters of the balustrade with their gold leaf accents weave round and round. They existed in the home, giving way to what Woods described as the “beautiful bones” of this great house. To complement, Woods chose two greytoned stamped prints with geometric lines to adorn the walls.

“When you create rhythm in design, you create tension in an environment, and that’s what arouses our emotions.” Bittners designer Joseph Woods

“Artwork adds rhythm to an interior. When you create rhythm in design, you create tension in an environment, and that’s what arouses our emotions. That’s what makes us react to things – is when there is some kind of underlying tension. It kind of makes you feel different about the way you look at those spaces. That’s what those prints did in comparison to those really classic, beautiful, rod-iron balusters – the fact that they’re really different, but yet they both have their own energy and rhythm – they’re wrong, but they’re oh so right,” he says. Woods really does say it best: “Bittners’ tagline is ‘Designing for the way you live,’ and those aren’t just words; it’s a philosophy. To me, that’s what helps turn a house into a home. A house is a structure, but a home is what you put in it and the way you live in it.” He has succeeded well in this Glenview home – it is truly a home to behold.

WHEN WORK

MEETS PLAY Jack Ridge, Domain Realty Written by Eli Keel • Photography by Clay Cook and Courtesy of Jack Ridge

J

ack Ridge may be selling million dollar homes in Florida now, but it took a lot of hard work to get there, starting back in 1956, when at the age of 12, he first walked into Big Spring Country Club and asked for a job as a caddy. “The kids were getting off the bus and running across the street to caddy – that was a way they could earn some income,” says Ridge. Caddying was a good job for kids, and they needed the income. Many of them, like Ridge, grew up in the Bowman Field Housing projects. Ridge was almost turned away. “I approached the caddy master he just said, ‘No you’re too small. Come back next year.’” But Ridge wasn’t going to be turned away. “I said, ‘Well actually, I came over last year and you told me to come back this year.” Now retired, Ridge has taught golf, run golf courses and owned several of his own in his 60-year golf career, and it all started when that caddy master decided to give Ridge one shot, despite his small size. Though it almost kept him off the green that day, Ridge credits his size and growing

up poor for his work ethic and says it’s helped him succeed. “I always felt like you have to prove yourself, coming out of the housing projects and going to the schools and being small for my age.” He also credits his mother, Gwendolyn Ridge. “I was always the best dressed caddy because my mom insisted that I dress right and do things right, and to this day, she still buys me my socks.” Looking smart and working hard helped Ridge rise through the ranks at Big Spring, and he worked there throughout high school and college. He learned to play and love golf; he and the rest of the caddies had a special day of the week on the green. “Every Monday, they had caddy day. I couldn’t wait for Mondays to come around because we got to play golf at Big Spring Country Club. We’d tee off in the dew at 7 o’clock in the morning.” After graduating from Bellarmine University, he followed in his father’s footsteps and joined the army, though his boss at Big Spring promised him his job would be there when he came back.

In the army, Ridge was placed in a desk job but soon found himself back on familiar territory – assigned to run a golf course in Kitzingen, Germany. After his tour ended, Ridge worked in Louisville before moving to Danville, where he started a family. He finally bought his own club in 1976. He would go on to own clubs in Alabama, Georgia and Kentucky and design golf courses around the Bluegrass State. When he finally retired from the golf business, he moved to Florida to be close to his daughter and grandchildren, but he decided the sedentary life wasn’t attractive. Despite living in a golf community where he could play to his heart’s content, he decided to start a new career in real estate, a career that he says a life in golf prepared him for. “Well, the whole thing about golf is about being able to deal with people and get along with people and create relationships. The biggest thing I’m finding in real estate is creating relationships with people.” Those relationships help Ridge find a perfect home and community for each client, and they appreciate the help. His extensive knowledge of golf is handy too. Many of the homes he sells are in golf communities, and Ridge still gets plenty of time to play down in Florida, sometimes playing with his clients. “This past Sunday, a gentleman who purchased a home from me invited me to play golf and just wanted to tell me how happy they were with the home that we found together and how they love the community that we found for them.” Ridge says that his business isn’t just finding homes. It’s putting people in their dreams. “You’re helping them search, especially here in South Florida, for a dream – for a home that they dreamed about their entire lives – retiring, coming to Florida or having a second home in Florida.” Ridge currently works at Domain Realty, a company co-owned by his son-in-law Jesse McGreevey. McGreevey has been in real estate for 15 years, starting Domain just two years ago. With a full career as a golf professional and a budding real estate career, Ridge, now 72, is still making plans for the future: “I want to bring my youngest grandson down and start teaching him to golf.” 94 T H E V O I C E O F L O U I S V I L L E |

A FAMILY

AFFAIR Jordan Clines Jewelers Written by Breanna Price • Photography by Clay Cook and David Kalka

U

nlike most other types of stores, a jewelry store can be an intimidating place for many. Customers often don’t know where to begin, haven’t come to terms with what type and size of diamond they can afford and may or may not even know the cut they want. Asscher who? Marquise where? Trillion what?

Clines, leader of family-owned and operated Jordan Clines Jewelers, uses his expertise and experience to provide the city with everything from fine estate jewelry to handcrafted, one-of-a-kind custom designs. This comes after many years of honing his craft, which began in the early 2000s.

Even if someone does know what they want, it’s hard not to assume the salesperson is only going to try and sell you on the most expensive ring they have. After all, the thought in the back of your mind is really, “Does he actually mean what he just said? Or is he just trying to make a commission?”

After growing up in Louisville, he worked in Los Angeles in fine manufacturing with a friend.

This, coupled with the fact that nine times out of 10, a person walking into a jewelry store is doing so for a special, memorable occasion in their life, puts a lot of pressure on shopping for the literal “right fit.” Imagine you’re at this point in your life. Who do you buy from? Where do you go? In Louisville, Jordan Clines is a superb option for both the who and the where.

SUMMER 2016

“[We] were creating handmade one-off pieces for important diamonds and colored stones,” Clines says. “And then I met my now wife, and her father kind of steered me toward going on my own and becoming an estate jewelry and diamond buyer. I started in 2005 or 2006 and started buying in 2008.” Once in the business, it became a family affair, as Clines opened his Frankfort Avenue location in August 2010 after moving back to Louisville with his wife from Los Angeles. By opening his store, Clines wanted to approach the process of jewelry buying differently than every other retailer.

It’s all family-owned. You’re dealing with the owners every time you come in. When a customer comes in and wants to design a ring or engagement ring, we’re going to start by showing them loose stones, and then we go from there.

“[For] all of our engagement rings – any of our customer creations – we start with a stone and build our creation around the center stone. You know, you go to a lot of stores and they have you pick out the mounting first and then you pick out the diamond, the sapphire, the ruby or the emerald,” Clines explains. “But the ring is supposed to show off the stone – the stone’s not supposed to show off the ring. And in order to capture that, you have to build something around the stone.” This unique and personal approach has earned Clines quite a few loyal customers. So much so that he and his family also run two locations in Los Angeles in addition to the family’s location here in Louisville. “It’s not just a walk-in jewelry store like everybody else,” Clines says. “We’re known for our fine estate jewelry, colored

stones and custom, handmade engagement rings. We’re also known for our buying service. We purchase locally and we buy estate jewelry, whether modern estate or antique estate from individuals. We do all styles of rings; we do everything.” In having the store completely managed by family, Clines eliminates the awkward pressure that often accompanies jewelry buying and replaces it with a genuine, relaxed atmosphere that allows for collaboration. “It’s all family-owned. You’re dealing with the owners every time you come in,” says Clines. “When a customer comes in and wants to design a ring or engagement ring, we’re going to start by showing them loose stones, and then we go from there. Do they want a diamond border around the center stone and little micro diamonds in between?” The beautiful part about Clines’ jewelry is that you know he’s not just trying to make a sale when he talks about a piece. He knows about every piece in every corner, where it came from and, perhaps most importantly, why each piece is priced the way it is. And if nothing speaks to you, he has the unique ability to create something new, so you know you’re walking away with exactly what you wanted. He’s not just a jewelry seller – he’s a jewelry maker. “Different stones just...the stone will speak to you. The stone will almost direct you when you’ve been doing it as long as I have,” Clines describes. “But it also has to do with what the customer’s request is. You know, what do they want? It’s totally collaborative. Their input is vital because if they’re not happy, I’m not doing my job properly.” For more information, please contact Jordan Clines Jewelers at 502.690.3100 or visit their website at jordanclinesjewelers.com.

LITTLE BLACK DRESS Photography by Clay Cook

adies, Little Black Dress Wines have combined your favorite wine with a more contemporary and upscale label that exudes a look of “drink me now.” LBD Wines are distributed by Excelsior Wines, which is owned by Viña Concha y Toro and Banfi Vintners, worldwide wineries that know a thing or two about making great wines. We have been buying it and loving it for years because of its appealing name and because it produces wine we love that stands for causes important to us.

premium. Probably the most significant change in the label is that the displayed name is no longer Little Black Dress but LBD, still handwritten. The abbreviation is a signal that the company has gone high-tech just like the times we live in. The shoes and hanger, meanwhile, have transformed to just a dress, sleek and effective and far less gendered.

But Little Black Dress is undergoing a total makeover – don’t you wish we all could? We can still expect the wine we have known and loved for years, but the new face is sleeker, edgier and fresher than ever before. The name Little Black Dress was first selected as an homage to one of the favorite pieces in our wardrobe – the something special we can wear to anything and still look amazing in: the little black dress. It is functional, and we can count on it being elegant and timeless. As the wine label asserts, a little black dress is “more than it looks – it’s about confidence. It’s about knowing you look fantastic and not having to shout it from the rooftop.” Similarly, LBD wines are effortlessly chic, synonymous with understated elegance. We know it’s good, and we aren’t shouting either. The company’s past branding of Little Black Dress featured the name in a cursive scrawl with a hanger and pair of shoes. But now, it has a new modern and sophisticated look that screams

There’s nothing like pairing a great wine with exciting and innovative cuisine. Chip Lawrence, executive chef at Le Moo, took the time to prepare some of his favorite dishes that perfectly complement some of Little Black Dress’ wine varieties. SUMMER 2016

SUMMER 2016

As the wine label asserts, a little black dress is ‘more than it looks – it’s about confidence. It’s about kno wing you look fantastic and not having to shout it from the rooftop.’

The label colors also now change so that it’s white for white wines and black for the reds. This again speaks to the brand’s elegance and versatility and sends a clear message to all of us who enjoy drinking it. It unquestionably appeals to a larger range of women, maybe even men, but avoids being in your face about what new people will fall in love with LBD. Outside of the label, the most major development has to do with the new winemaker, the new main lady of LBD, Margaret Leonardi. A native of Northern California, Margaret feels right at home at LBD’s Mendocino County vineyard and has spent her life surrounded by wine and viticulture. Large family meals, athome gatherings and leisurely dinners accompanied by wine were the rule, not the exception for her growing up. Her passion for wine coupled with being surrounded while growing up by inspiring women – namely her mother, a teacher, and her grandmother, an incredible cook – make being responsible for one of the most popular, successful, female-centric wine collections a natural fit. Prior to joining the LBD family though, Margaret received her bachelor’s degree in agribusiness with a concentration in marketing from California Polytechnic State University before running a pilot program experimenting in grape varietals and crafting a number of consumer-favorite wines. SUMMER 2016

“I aim to make wines that are approachable, affordable and delicious,” she says. “This means creating wines that can be appreciated while curling up on the couch to watch ‘The Bachelor’ on Monday evenings, hanging out with your girlfriends on Wednesday nights, flirting on date nights or relaxing on Friday evenings at home over dinner with friends. Little Black Dress Wines are varietally correct and versatile, pairing well with a wide range of foods and occasions. This collection of fruit-forward wines includes crisp, refreshing whites and smooth, softtannin reds – all ready for immediate enjoyment.”

Without question, the future is bright for Little Black Dress. With the new winemaker at the helm and a re-branding that engages consumers of all ages, LBD is not only versatile and reliable but still just a timelessly elegant as its beloved namesake.
