THINK BRIGHT Choose electric colors that enhance your look and your spirits. By Sam Neibart VIBRANT EYES

Smart application makes intense shades totally wearable: The key is to avoid blending shadow too far past the crease. To pull off bold mascara, Maybelline New York global makeup artist Erin Parsons advises picking a deep color and lining your waterlines with a pencil in a matching shade. Keep all other makeup minimal.

HIGH-IMPACT LIPS

Coral orange and fuchsia are “an exciting kind of a twist” on classic red, says celebrity makeup artist James Kaliardos. Parsons recommends matte formulas, which are more controllable and won’t slide around. For balance, keep your skin a bit dewy. “When you’re using matte lip color, the whole face can look flat,” Kaliardos says. “Glowing skin helps you pull off a strong look.”

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: CHRISTIAN LOUBOUTIN LOUBIFLASH NAIL COLOUR IN NEOPRENE ($30); ESSIE NAIL POLISH IN CAPRI ($9); KEVYN AUCOIN THE NEO-BLUSH IN SUNSET ($38); MAKE UP FOR EVER ARTIST COLOR PENCIL IN VERSATILE VIOLET ($18); MAYBELLINE NEW YORK COLOR SENSATIONAL CREAMY MATTE LIPSTICK IN MESMERIZING MAGENTA ($7).

BOLD BLUSH

The new way to wear blush is to highlight the face, rather than mimic a flush. Kaliardos suggests placing color high on the cheekbones, drawing attention to the outer planes of the face and creating “a sort of upper-cheek facelift.” Apply with a light hand to let your skin show through. Parsons’s shortcut: Tap a bit of bright lipstick onto cheeks.

PLAYFUL POLISH

Nail polish is the gateway drug for the brights trend. Celebrity manicurist Tracylee Percival says that while you can wear any shade you love, a quick way to find the most flattering hue is to look at your skin’s undertones: “Pinks and blues look great on cooler skin tones; orange and yellow-based reds look best on warmer complexions.”
