Hawea Flat fire wake-up call Caroline Harker Wanaka Sun Friday’s fire in Hawea Flat which spread rapidly over about 4ha and threatened homes, came close to being “extremely large and impossible to control,” Hawea Fire Brigade Officer in Charge Brent Arthur said. The fire started when a weed-eater blade hit a rock and spread quickly due to the tinder dry conditions and a strong northwest wind. A crib and caravan were destroyed and several houses and properties were damaged in the blaze. Concerned similar fires could be disastrous, local residents had a meeting to discuss possible strategies three days after the fire, and are meeting with the local fire brigade on Monday. Albert Town mountaineer Dave Vass, who was seriously injured during a fall in Fiordland’s Darran Mountains on Sunday night, is now in Christchurch Hospital’s intensive care unit, with his partner Ros Goulding staying at Ranui House next door. “He has a broken and dislocated neck, and is currently fully paralysed with some sensation in his right hand,” Ros said. Dave had surgery yesterday and will be in intensive care for four to six weeks. “He will be relocated to Burwood rehabilitation centre when he can breathe unassisted. It’s pretty tough right now and we
hope for improvement over the next six to 24 months, “she said. “I think the rescue was incredible.” Dave was on what had become an annual climbing trip in the Darran Mountains when the accident happened. He was with Richard Turner and Richard Thompson who he has been climbing in the Darran Mountains with for 15 years, and Tom Riley. Richard Turner said the party was walking out and was only a few kilometres from the road when the accident happened. “The terrain was very steep bush country and the weather was atrocious. Seething Fiordland conditions. We were loving it,” he said. “Half an
hour earlier we got to the end of daylight. We realised we were too late to make it out to the pub, so we decided to take it easy and get to the car anyway. We were doing semivertical bush bashing. Dave slipped. He said afterwards everything that was supporting him just collapsed. Flax, scrub, tree roots. He fell about four or five metres and then pitched over a ledge and landed badly. He was the most experienced person there and he project-managed the whole rescue. We set off a locator beacon, sent Rich Thompson off to get help and then hunkered down for the night.” Richard Thompson made it to their car in half an hour and drove to
Milford Sound to get help. He and a paramedic from Milford Sound met Te Anau Search and Rescue team members and Richard guided them in to the other climbers. “The accident happened about 11.30pm. There was an incredible electrical storm going on. They got back to us at about 4.30am. Pretty dam slick. That was a lot faster than we thought possible,” Richard Turner said. “We were very pleased to see them.” A rescue helicopter arrived at dawn (about 5am) and it took a few hours to evacuate Dave and the rest of the rescue party. Incredible rescue Continued from page 1... “It was awesome they flew him out of there,” Ros said. “[Southern Lakes Helicopters’] Sir Richard [Hayes] is an incredible pilot. We want to thank everyone who helped rescue Dave in atrocious conditions.” Dave was taken to Dunedin Hospital initially, before being transferred to the intensive care unit in Christchurch. “Dave is progressing as well as can be expected given the severity of the injuries,” Ros said. “He and [their son] Monty and I have been impressed with the care and support from the hospital, the emergency services and the SAR volunteers. A big thanks to all our friends and extended family who are helping us deal with this event.” Dave and Ros have owned a canyoning business in Wanaka
Naked man on Mount Iron track
Staff Reporter Wanaka Sun The police would like to speak to a man who was naked on the Mount Iron walking track on last week. Sergeant Aaron Nicholson said the man was about five foot 11 inches (180 centimetres) with shoulder-length brown hair and an English
accent. He was seen on the track, between Albert Town and Puzzling World, on Wednesday last week (January 14). Sgt Nicholson said the person who reported seeing the man to the police said he walked off the track into some bushes and put his trousers on. He told the person he

since 1994. Ros said it is business as usual at Deep Canyon, with operations manager Riki Brown leading the team of guides. Dave is well known in Wanaka for his canyoning business and his skills as
a climber, skier, diver and more. He was named Alpinist of the Year in 2004 by the New Zealand Alpine Club. “That just confirmed what a lot of people already thought,” Richard Turner said.
Aerial 1080 operations schedule An aerial pre-feed operation is scheduled to take place in the Makarora region after Wednesday January 28. It will occur later in the week or on the weekend, depending on weather conditions. The aerial 1080 toxin drop-in is still scheduled for the first suitable weather window after February 14.
There have been about 60 expressions of interest in the 35 desks available in The Cell, Wanaka’s new office for start-up businesses. Described as “a collaborative working space for start-up entrepreneurs, innovators and professionals,” The Cell is in the former police station on Helwick Street. The idea to create The Cell was part of the business plan developed by the team of local people who led Wanaka’s effort to
win last year’s Gigatown competition. Dunedin won the year-long competition, entitling them to gigabit, or very fast, internet at a discounted price. The Cell spokesperson Kelly Good said the facility had space for 35 people. The aim was to provide offices for a low rent to enable people to develop their business and ideas. For $95 a week or $380 a month, people get a desk in a shared office, access to private meeting and calling rooms, highspeed WiFi, an internet connection printing services, electricity,
showers and lockers. “We have tried to make it as accessible as possible for people.” The shared office would also provide opportunities for sharing ideas and networking, she said. A part-time administrator is currently being sought for The Cell. Kelly Good said while most of the interest in leasing a desk had come from local businesspeople who currently worked from home, people in Christchurch who were interested in moving to Wanaka had also expressed interest, along with people
who holidayed in Wanaka and wanted to have access to an office while they were visiting. The building’s owner had leased it to Gigatown Wanaka Limited which would lease out the individual desks. The building had been renovated with the help of local businesses who had provided materials and services free-of-charge or at a discounted rate, plus donations of money from some local people. The building would also be used to run seminars for startup businesspeople.
Hawea Flat fire wake-up call Continued from page 1... Hawea Flat resident Greg Tump said Paul Kummerow, who had been a rural fire fighter in Australia, attended the residents’ meeting and spoke about how the community could be better prepared for fires, including keeping long grass under control and having fire management plans. The option of Hawea Flat having its own flatdeck 4WD truck with a water tank and pump on the back was discussed and will be considered at Monday’s meeting with the fire brigade personnel. “We really want to work with the fire brigade,” Greg said. The fire was first noticed when residents smelt smoke and they battled the fire for some time before the Hawea Fire Brigade and other support arrived. “The man with the weed-eater ran about 40m to his vehicle, and by the time he got there the flames were right beside him and 20 feet high,” Brent Arthur said. “He lost a small crib and a caravan and various mowers and

trailers and things. Then it jumped to the next door house damaging the top storey before it jumped across [Loach Road] burning the corner of the next house.” Brent said the fire was continuing down the road so he decided the Hawea Fire Brigade would try to cut it off. Other brigades from Wanaka and Luggate and firefighters from Tarras were allocated specific areas to get it under control. “The fire travelled 500-600m down McLennan Road very quickly,” Brent said. “If it had got into the trees on the hill further down the road it would have been very hard to stop. The main point is you can’t underestimate the speed of fire and you can’t expect to beat it with a bucket and a hose. It was a wake-up call and it was great to see everyone working together.” McLennan Road resident Hugh Barnard and plasterer Greg Tump were among the first on the scene of the fire. “There was a howling northerly and the house next door to where the fire started was a rental and the

water was turned off so we didn’t have a garden hose or anything,” Hugh said. “I saw it get into the pine trees and then leap across Loach Road and into Doug [Hamilton’s] berm.” It was moving fast and the fire brigade suggested we get ready to evacuate.” Greg said he was first on the scene at Doug’s property. “I tried the garden hose but there wasn’t enough pressure, so I tried to stomp it out but it was overwhelming,” he said. “I yelled at the people next door to get out and then raced down to the next house to try to stop it with a hose. It was pretty crazy with a lot of things happening.” Hugh and his family, who live further down McLennen Road piled their belongings into vehicles ready to leave, while the fire brigades continued their work and about 80 locals formed a bucket chain to try and extinguish the blaze. About this time two helicopters arrived and soon had the fire under control, Hugh said. “We could easily have lost four houses,” Greg said.

Chimney fire spreads to house Staff Reporter Wanaka Sun There appears to be two causes behind a house fire in Matai Road on Tuesday, a fire risk manager says. The fire severely damaged the 110 Matai Road property which belonged to Jolene Fitzharris, who lived there with her son Peter Nolet. New Zealand Fire Service fire risk manager, Paul Glanville, said the fire started in a wall cavity which housed the flue, at the level of the floor of the first storey of the house. The flue was “hard up against” the floor joists and near the tongueand-groove wall lining, which caught fire. Paul Glanville said the timber would have dried out during the 22 years since the house was built and may have been decaying due to the heat for some time before igniting at about 7am on Tuesday.
It appeared the fireplace had been installed in accordance with the standards of the time, he said. A build-up of soot in the “s” bend of the flue, about 1.5m above the fireplace, may also have contributed to the cause of the fire, he said. Paul Glanville said the fire had probably started about ten minutes before Peter Nolet called the fire service. He had got up to investigate “bangs and pops” types of noise, but was not aware the house was on fire until a neighbour told him, Paul Glanville said. “It was still taking hold at ceiling level upstairs.” The two-storey house also had timber-lined ceilings “with reasonable ventilation. “The fire had the right conditions, the right amount of fuel and the right amount of air to develop very quickly.”
There were functional smoke alarms in the bedrooms, but the one in the living room was not working. The fire service recommended people put smoke alarms in all bedrooms, hallways and living areas, Paul Glanville said. It was difficult to check the location of built-in flues without causing damage to the wall, he said, but other ways people could reduce the fire risk was to only burn dry wood, as wet wood created more soot which could cause a chimney fire, and to get their chimney cleaned each year before using their fire. Peter Nolet was sleeping downstairs and Jolene Fitzharris was sleeping upstairs, Paul Glanville said. Both escaped unharmed. “They have done all the right things – they got out of the house straight away, they contacted the fire service and they stayed out of the house.”
Police advise against taking keys Staff Reporter Wanaka Sun The police are advising people who witness dangerous driving to contact them, rather than take matters into their own hands. The advice follows an incident on State Highway 8 over the Lindis Pass on Sunday evening when a Queenstown man says he took the car keys from a person who was driving dangerously. The offending driver, reportedly an Australian citizen of Indian descent who was driving a Kia Carnival rental vehicle, and the man’s family were left on the side of the road until the police arrived. He has been charged with careless use of a motor vehicle.
The man who took the keys has been widely praised for his actions on social media websites. However, the southern police district’s acting

Nationwide, 12,706 people called the *555 service over the Christmas and New Year holiday, from Christmas Eve until January 4, a 22 percent increase on the same period last year. Across the country, drivers with an overseas licence are involved in six percent of road crashes in which a person or people die or are seriously injured. Staff Reporter Wanaka Sun Aucklander Mina Holder will arrive in Wanaka today on her way from Cape Reinga to Bluff. She is running the Te Araroa trail to raise funds for Starship Children’s Hospital. She has raised more than $5000 already through donations made via her website RunNZ. Mina (pictured) believes she may become the first woman to run the trail, if
she completes the 3000km. At least two men have run the trail; Richard Bowles, who completed it in 65 days, and Jez Bragg, who holds the current record of 53 days, nine hours and one minute. Originally from England, 34-year-old Mina moved to New Zealand several years ago with her husband James Holder. “Since living in New Zealand I have been volunteering once a week in the school at Starship. I
have seen many incredible examples of the care and support children and families receive whilst at Starship. I will be specifically raising money for paediatric cardiac equipment.” Mina discovered her love of trail running soon after she took up running eight years ago. Since then she has completed several ultra-distance events including the Marathon des Sables. She has been joined on
the trail by James and his twin brother Adam Holder, who run alternate tracks with her. Yesterday Mina ran along Birchwood Road by the Ahuriri River before heading up the Breast Hill Track. She planned to stay overnight in either Timaru Hut or Stody’s Hut and run the Gladstone Track into Hawea today. She hopes, weather permitting, to complete the 3000km run on February 4.
Hawea heritage issues discovered Maddy Harker Wanaka Sun Heritage issues were discussed at the Hawea Community Association’s public meeting on January 10. The meeting discussed a variety of topics relating to Hawea, with different workshops assigned to each issue. The heritage workshop was chaired by local woman Barbara Chinn, who said the meeting discussed the preservation of native plants and the Hawea River in its natural form, among other things. Hawea resident John Taylor has collected a number of historical photos of the region, with the earliest dated 1907 (one of these dated 1945 is pictured). He presented these at the meeting. Tall challenge for local firefighters Maddy Harker Wanaka Sun Eight local volunteer firefighters will compete in the Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge, a fundraising event for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand, on May 23. The challenge involves ascending the 1103 steps to reach the top of Auckland’s Sky Tower, fully kitted out in firefighting gear which weighs 25kg. Local firefighter Glen Thurston will be competing for the fifth year. He describes the event as “humbling”. “It’s great to be a part of
such an important cause,” he said. Every $1500 raised gives preferential entry to one firefighter for the following year’s race. This year Wanaka has eight firefighters entering, compared to two the first year they competed in 2011. Finding the time to fundraise can be a challenge for the volunteer firefighters who all work fulltime, but with help from local business, Francesca’s, which has committed to donating two dollars from every pepperoni pizza sold to the cause, they can concentrate on their training.
“Francesca’s generosity has been incredibly helpful. They have gone out of their way for us and we have secured a good relationship for sponsorship of the event in the future,” Glen said. Last year the initiative raised more than $3000. This year the fundraising period has been extended. It began in mid-December and will finish on May 23. It has already raised $1000 and the firefighters are hoping to raise a total of $5000 this year. The team – comprising six males and two females – is hoping to gain a place this year after just missing out last year when
they came fourth after competing against almost 700 other firefighters. Glen placed fifth overall last year in a time of ten minutes and 18 seconds on the 51-floor climb. Last year marked the tenth annual challenge and firefighters from around the country raised a record $915,000 for the cause, which affects 10,000 New Zealanders. Family Works Otago is looking for volunteers for its Buddy Programme in Wanaka. Ten children are currently on the waiting list for adult buddies. Established in 1992, children are usually referred by educational specialists or social workers who believe they could benefit from the programme. “The emphasis is on building a positive and fun relationship by sharing everyday activities,” programme co-ordinator Jacqui Henson-Cubie said. “One of our adult buddies has a helicopter
and has taken his buddy fishing over on the West Coast. Another adult buddy did the Wanaka Challenge and his young buddy was at the finish line supporting him.” Hawea local Pip Harker has been an adult buddy for the programme for the last two years, after a chance meeting with the programme coordinator. “The beauty of the programme is that Jacqui works extremely hard to match the adults with children that share common interests.” Pip’s performing and cooking background fitted perfectly with her buddy’s interest in music, drama and food.
“This is the kind of kid that inspires you with his enthusiasm, compassion and intelligence,” she said . Alth ou g h th e programme formally ends when the child turns 12 and her buddy has passed that age, the two continue to catch up on a regular basis. “People get very attached and form close bonds. It’s a great thing, being able to form a relationship with someone who, for whatever reason, could benefit from some one-on-one time with an empathetic adult,” Pip said. See classifieds for details
Speed limits under review The Queenstown Lakes District Council is proposing to amend its Speed Limits Bylaw to make changes suggested by the community and other agencies. Speed limits are reviewed periodically to take account of development and changes in road usage. In Wanaka the proposed changes include reducing the speed limit from 70kph to 50kph on Aubrey Road, 100m in each direction from the intersection with Gunn Road and creating a 40kph school zone speed limit on Plantation Road from 30m north of Kings Drive to 55m east of Totara Terrace. Corrections to the bylaw will also be made where the roads are already assigned at a lower speed limit, including on Cardrona Valley Road, from 50m to 90m south of West Meadows Drive. A full description of the proposed changes is on the council’s website and copies will also be in council offices and libraries this week. A hearings panel will consider all the feedback at the end of April. Submissions close on February 27.

crimescene Driving, hoax texts and assault Among the drivers who were caught speeding this week were two travelling at 147kph and 137kph. There was a non-injury crash on the Cardrona Valley Road. Another two drink-drivers were caught this week. Both blew readings over the old breath-alcohol limit. A male, who had stolen more than $1600 worth of goods from eight stores in town, was apprehended with the help of a salesperson on Monday. Two people were arrested for assault. One near Mount Iron on Friday and another on Sunday after the offender chased a male into a property and assaulted him. Police dealt with five males who treated hotel staff badly. They will be trespassed from every bar in town. There is a hoax text message doing the rounds. It claims the phone owner has won a lot of money.

Outspoken Festival to return Maddy Harker Wanaka Sun The Outspoken Festival of Words and Storytelling will return to Wanaka on February 13. The festival will be held over four weekends, with events including stand-up comedy, poetry and storytelling. Combining an eclectic blend of performances, workshops and open-mic sessions, the programme is designed to engage as many people as possible. Festival organiser Julia Le described the line-up as “a dazzling mix.” Now in its second year, the idea was sparked by festival trustee Luc Bohyn, who was inspired by spoken-word performances in Europe. This year well-known poets Brian Turner, Tusiata Avia

and Hinemoana Baker will be performing and the South Island Poet’s Collective will be back with a new set of performers. Kiwi entertainers Gary McCormick and Olly Ohlsen will also be performing at the new Wanaka Lavender Farm.
The open-mic night will provide talented locals with a platform to share their work. Julia Le is particularly excited about the comedy performers (pictured, comedian Pax Assadi). “We’ve got New Zealand’s top four comedians coming and it’s going
to be fantastic.” The comedians will perform a tongue-in-cheek style show called “Big Issues.” March 28 and 29 will mark the end of the festival with guest author Joy Cowley. She will be giving a children’s writing workshop on March 28, her first in New Zealand in seven years. On March 29, Joy will give a talk on her spiritual and religious influences. Last year the festival was privately funded. “The amazing response last year inspired us to formalise it,” Julia said. The festival is now run by a registered charitable trust and has received the support of the Queenstown Lakes District Council and the Otago Community Trust. The trust is seeking further sponsors to support the event. Tickets will be available from February 1.
Hawea extravaganza on Waitangi Weekend Hawea’s annual Town versus Country Challenge and the Hawea Gala will take place on February 5 and 6. The event will kick off with a quiz night on February 5. The Town versus Country challenges will be held on February 6, including cricket, bowls and volleyball. The Kidz Corner for under-eight year olds will feature a lolly scramble, trolley derby and waterslide. From 4pm onwards, there will be a barbecue, band, stalls, displays and more. This year marks the tenth anniversary of the event.

Kickstarting Arma Del Amor Maddy Harker Wanaka Sun Wanaka-based musical duo Arma Del Amor has launched a crowdfunding campaign through Kickstarter. Three days into the 30day campaign, they had already been pledged over half of their goal amount of $10,000. Kickstarter provides opportunities for people to invest in new businesses and initiatives. The pair - comprising Martine Harding and Danny Fairley (Civilian Sol) - is raising funds to help with the final stages of production of their debut album. Martine said the pair is “absolutely blown away” with the support received so far. Arma Del Amor formed after Martine and Danny realised a mutual love of electronic music. They describe themselves as “residing on the ambient soul side

of electronica.” They formed two years ago and have had some amazing experiences already, including being the closing act at Rippon Music Festival last year and, more recently, opening Rhythm and Alps festival which featured worldwide acts such as Bastille and Chet Faker. And it’s no wonder - these two have a hugely infectious sound. Danny’s multiinstrumental talents
provide the foundation for Martine’s hypnotic vocals. They’ve got a way of surprising you on every track. One reviewer described this combination as having struck gold. Another said “if symbiosis were recordable, it might sound like this.” Music website Music Unmasked nailed it with the description “fury meets heaven and ethereal indulgence… this is feisty, contagious and prolific. It is
everything.” Arma Del Amor has been recording in various studios and home set-ups throughout New Zealand, but the costs of the final stages of production (mixing, mastering and physical production) are too high for them to meet on their own. Their Kickstarter campaign is off to an amazing start but there is a catch-22 - funding from Kickstarter is allor-nothing, meaning that projects must reach their goal to receive any of the money pledged. Supporters can donate as little as $5 or, for $8000, can have their full name tattooed on Danny’s rear end, if that’s what you’re into. For lower pledges there are other innovative offers – for $1000 Martine will lay down vocals for a track and for $3000 the duo will perform a private house concert and donate merchandise.

Para-snowboarder Carl Murphy was placed third in snowboard-cross at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) ParaSnowboard World Cup at Big White, Canada, on Saturday. “I’m stoked, having just stepped off the plane and having had seven weeks off snow, a podium was more than I was expecting. I was hoping for a top-five result,” Carl said. He had spent the last seven weeks at home following the birth of his second child in December. It was his first time competing in the new
format of snowboardcross head-to-head and the competition included all three Sochi 2014 men’s medallists, the USA’s Evan Strong, Mike Shea and Keith Gabel. “I still didn’t ride exactly how I wanted but it takes a few days to get back into it and it’s reassuring to know I’m still on the pace,” he said. “I’m really grateful to have the support of my wife Aleisha in helping me balance family alongside my professional goals.” Mike Shea (USA) finished in first place and Finnish rider Maati Suuri Hamari was second. Carl continued his good form on Monday, claiming a gold medal
in the banked slalom. “It feels so good to be on top of the podium,” Carl said. “I had a clear focus on what I wanted to do today and how I wanted to ride. I was extremely focused finding that next level that I needed to get to the top of the podium, rather than settle for silver or bronze.” Banked slalom was added as a new discipline this season following the successful debut of para-snowboard cross at the Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi last year. Carl said he enjoys the new discipline because it combines both alpine and boardercross skills.
New soccer tournament Staff Reporter Wanaka Sun The inaugural Wanaka Soccer Sevens Masters’ Tournament will be held on Pembroke Park on February 7 and 8. Organisers Andrew Miller and Andre Klein (pictured) are New Zealand Masters Futsal (indoor football) silver medallists who play regularly in the local 11-a-side and five-a-side leagues at masters and open grades and run the local futsal competition throughout winter. Andre said running a tournament, however small, boosts Wanaka’s profile as a place to be, so it is putting a little back into the community which they have enjoyed for years. “We love Wanaka and other people love coming to Wanaka … we love football and a few other people do too. Combining the two was a no-brainer.”

Enjoyment of the game and the event will be the primary objective. This is reinforced by masters’ rules applying, so sliding tackles are banned. The new event
will bring about 200 masters’ (aged over 35) football players to Wanaka for Waitangi weekend with late entries still being taken.

BOARD LOT OF GRIEF BEING GIVEN TO FOREIGN DRIVERS LATELY, I KNOW A LOT OF KIWI DRIVERS AND LOCALS WHO DON’T KNOW HOW TO NEGOTIATE A ROUNDABOUT, CAN’T STOP AT STOP SIGNS AND ARE GENERALLY RUDE WHILE DRIVING – SO WHY DON’T YOU IMPROVE YOUR OWN DRIVING BEFORE YOU CAST STONES. UNWELL ON MY BREAK IN WANAKA SPENT 195 DOLLARS ON TWO CONSULTS AT A LOCAL MEDICAL CENTRE. IN CHRISTCHURCH I WOULD HAVE PAID HALF THAT MUCH, TOO EXPENSIVE FOR A BASIC PUBLIC SERVICE. FRIENDLY STAFF THOUGH. A MASSIVE SHOUT OUT OF THANKS TO THE WONDERFUL RESIDENTS OF HAWEA FLAT!! FOR THOSE WHO HELPED WITH THE FIRE, RESCUING OUR DOG AND REMOVING ALL THE POSSESSIONS YOU COULD- YOU ARE AWESOME!! LOVE & LIGHT XX HAPPY BIRTHDAY PRINCESS KITTY, YOUR AUNTIES AND UNCLES ARE THINKING ABOUT YOU XX
THE VIEWS EXPRESSED IN THE TEXT BOARD AND IN THE LETTERS TO THE EDITOR ARE THOSE OF THE AUTHOR ALONE AND NOT NECESSARILY THOSE OF THE WANAKA SUN.
EDITORIAL Wanaka might not have won the Gigatown competition – and there will be many people who are not upset about that – but some real good has come of the year-long battle. The Cell is just one example. The dedicated, innovative and generous (with both time and money) group behind Wanaka’s Gigatown campaign have set up offices in the old police station on Helwick Street where people trying to get a new business or idea off the ground can work from for a low rent. They’ll get to mingle with like-minded people, be inspired by them, brainstorm with them, sort out problems with them and probably have a lot of fun with them too. What a great idea, in terms of both communityspirit and economic opportunities. Working from home is tough and having somewhere to go and people to work with might just be the difference between the ideas of Wanaka’s talented locals making it, rather than breaking.

Ruby cancelled due to bad weather The Ruby, which was to have been held on Saturday, was cancelled due to strong winds and rough lake conditions. Organisers Eddie Spearing and Jamie Norman said they would be unable to “keep swimmers safe on the back side of the island during the period of our longest races around the island.” They were “hugely disappointed” the inaugural swim event would not go ahead. “We are sorry to have to come to this decision which was not taken easily.”

Podiums for Adam Wanaka’s Adam Hall has picked up another two podium places in the run-up to the 2015 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships. He was in Austria competing in IPC Europa Cup races over the weekend and claimed bronze medals in super-combined and slalom. “Adam has been skiing technically well during his time in Europe, but after the hectic race schedule it will be good for us to head back to the States for a rest followed by a strength and conditioning block,” his coach Ben Adams said. “Following that we’ll look ahead, hopefully to doing well in the World Champs.”
