Swimming instructor shortages Aimee Wilson Wanaka Sun

Some Central Otago primary school students have missed out on free swimming lessons this term because of an ongoing shortage of instructors. All Cromwell primary school students and two schools in Alexandra have had their lessons postponed, and the programme is being reassessed for term three. Hawea Flat school students also travel to Cromwell in term four for swim lessons, but the school hasn’t heard whether or not they would be affected.

basin schools this term due to smaller class numbers. We are currently assessing the programme for term three,” he said. There are currently eight teachers who work between Cromwell Swim Centre and Molyneux Aquatic Centre, in Alexandra. The council has been actively trying to recruit swim teachers, and need at least another two or three to be able to focus on the schools programme. “It has been frustrating not being able to offer our full range of services this term. If there are people out in the community that would be interested in teaching then please get hold of

Principal Sue Heath said in the past they have used the Cromwell pool for a block of one week, and the children have two lessons a day. “It’s been great and the children make a lot of progress in that time. Hopefully the lessons will be available in Term 4 - it’s a great initiative,” she said. Central Otago District Council parks and recreation manager Mathew Begg said Central Swim School continued to provide lessons “but at a reduced level to match the number of teachers currently available, and their ability to provide lessons. “We have however been able to provide lessons for two other Alexandra

Cromwell or Molyneux pools or see our job advertisement in the papers,” he said. Central Lakes Trust has funded lessons for Central Otago schools for the last five years. It is worth approximately $19,000 per year. The programme was recently expanded to include the Queenstown Lakes district which is serviced by Alpine Aqualand and its swim school. “We are currently reviewing what we can provide in term three which is the river safety component of the programme for the years five to eight. This may affect the same schools as Term 2,” he said.

Wanaka Wastebusters (WW) is looking at taking over the management of Central Otago WasteBusters (COWB), and put a proposal to the Central Otago District Council last week. COWB lost its district recycling contract to All Waste earlier this year and has since made about 20 staff redundant. The company approached WW asking for help, and manager Sue Coutts has been exploring options for

several months. Last week she asked the council to reconsider its waste management strategy. She told the council big centralised, mechanical waste management systems create inertia. “Waste material, rubbish and recycling, is trucked away” she said. “It is a fairly impersonal system and there is no incentive for people to change their behaviour [around recycling.] “The Wanaka model is different. WW uses people-focused systems.

Every interaction we have with customers and service users has the potential to change behaviour, ours and theirs. Over time the community has reached a tipping point where reuse and recycling have become normal, everyday things to do.” Under the proposal, WW would provide management, marketing and administrative support to COWB and would employ local staff to work at the Alexandra site. “Community enterprises like Wanaka Wastebusters have a long tradition of sharing what we

know with other communities,” Sue said. “We believe community recycling centres bring a lot to their communities and that’s why we’re fighting to help COWB survive. They create jobs, help keep the community strong and provide a working model of reuse and waste minimisation. “While I’ve done everything I can to find a working model for COWB, my first priority is always the well-being and financial security of Wanaka Wastebusters, and that won’t be put at risk.”

First YAMI summit rocked Caroline Harker Wanaka Sun The inaugural YAMI (“Youth and Adults in the Music Industry”) held in Wanaka last weekend represented the culmination of many years of dreaming and planning by organiser Lynne Christie. “I just wanted to do something to show people they could have viable careers in the music industry,” she said. “It was a fantastic weekend. There has been nothing like it before in NZ.” YAMI was a series of workshops and talks culminating in public performances where students shared the stage with the likes of Kiwi music legends Trinity Roots and Dave Dobbyn. Nearly 100 people from around the country attended the weekend, which Lynne said far exceeded her expectations. Students had a variety of workshops to choose from around themes of songwriting

and performance, audio production, media, marketing and management. There were also panel discussions on topics such as surviving financially as a musician, how to release a song and touring. There were some big names amongst the tutors including Warren Maxwell, Anika Moa, Barnaby Weir, Mu (from Fat

Freddy’s Drop), and MC Tali. Local tutors included Danny Fairley, Diana Hickey, Matt Lahood, and former local Anna Shaw (pictured taking a Singing in Harmony workshop) who travelled down from Wellington for the event. Everyone gave their time for free and 24 volunteers helped behind the scenes. Tutors commented on how

much they loved working with “talented and enthusiastic” young people, and the students got a big kick out of being with famous musicians. Fifteen-year-olds Tyler Bailey (drums) and Lucan Smith (bass) couldn’t believe their luck when they got to share the stage with Dave Dobbyn for his song, “Love you like I should”. “It’s something they’ll remember all their lives,” said Lucan’s father Roger yesterday. “It was an amazing opportunity for them, right here in Wanaka. And Dave was very generous with his time and advice.” Roger said Lucan is keen on a career in the music industry. Other locals who took part in YAMI included Luca Harrington, Minnie Gilmour, Rex Simpson, Max Hall, Ella Maluschnig, Elliot Frost, Harry Hughes, Harry Hewitt, Conor Moore, Jon Steven, Ellen Cagney, Emma Stalker, Erina Tamati, Frazer Limmer, Isaac Bell and Laura Hay.

Calling all single men. Where are you? Aimee Wilson Wanaka Sun The Cupid Club is looking for singles 27 and older, and in particular men, for its inaugural speed dating night on June 5. Organiser Hannah Twiss said so far only four men had registered for the event at the Lone Star, and 16 girls, “but we can’t host an event like that.” When Hannah first put the idea out in the community she was

PAGE 2

“inundated” by people who were keen to be involved. “It’s got legs, but people just aren’t following through,” she said. Perhaps dating websites had just taken over? The problem with those, is that people can hide behind their computers and not ‘face’ up to their date, until they actually had to. “And it takes all the spark away,” she said. It is a known fact that some of the profiles on dating websites aren’t

very accurate either, with people taking 10 years off their age and adding photos from when they were younger. “You know when you meet someone face to face if there is some sort of connection or not.” So after people register for the speed dating event and provide a profile and picture, the team behind the scenes will divide the pool of eligible bachelors and bachelorettes into more defined groups . They will then receive their

THURSDAY 21.05.15 - WEDNESDAY 27.05.15

exclusive invitation for the evening and the date they have been allocated. On the night they will then have five minutes to talk to each person and tell a little about themselves. Hannah said they had live music, spot prizes and games for people to come and enjoy. “It’s just getting people to have the nerve to do it. We have groups of girls coming along. The women just love it.” So come on fellas…

Fundraising for Kahu Staff Reporter Wanaka Sun Wanaka has shown its love and support for Kahu Vincent through a series of fundraising events held since the serious assault on May 9. A close friend of Kahu’s family has set up a Givealittle website fundraiser, which, at the time we went to print, had just surpassed $20,000 from 259 donors. “Busking for Kahu,” an event held at Buskers Square outside Kai Whakapai, also raised $3000 in donations, while the bar and café have donated all profits from drinks to the family too. The event was organised by Wanaka local Lauren Wotton, who has relocated to Wellington to embark

on a career in music management. Lauren was visiting Wanaka as a volunteer for YAMI Music Summit, and created the event to support Kahu. She described the experience as heartening. “I barely had to contact anybody but my phone was going off constantly all week with people offering support,” Lauren said.

Businesses and members of the community contributed in myriad ways, with some performing at the event and many contributing to the two fundraising raffles that were drawn. While Lauren managed organisation of the event, she was amazed at the support. “It w a s the w ho le community pulling together to make it

work. I didn’t have to actively seek musicians, donations, anything. It was a testament to the community.” Other members of the community have been contributing in all sorts of ways, with a number of items being sold on Upper Clutha Trading Post with proceeds going to the Vincent Family, donation boxes being set up at businesses across town, as well as a fundraiser golf tournament which will be held at the Lake Hawea Golf Club this Saturday (May 23), again with all proceeds going to the Vincent Family. Mini Muscles will also be contributing, either through monetary donations or toys that can be given to Kahu’s two young children.

inbrief Paper Plus sells winning ticket A winning Lotto Strike ticket was revealed to have been purchased from Paper Plus Wanaka, with the ticket making one lucky person $131,978 richer on Saturday night. Lotto Strike is an ‘’add-on’’ of Lotto, whereby you first buy a Lotto ticket and then add Strike, choosing a series of four numbers between one and 40. The aim is to pick four numbers in the correct order that they are drawn out of the Lotto Strike “barrel”. The lucky winner received a “Strike Four” – the first four numbers matching the exact order of the first four numbers drawn. Owner Chris Lumsden said it was exciting to have another winner in Wanaka, which has been lucky enough to have sold tickets to “a bunch” of winners, including a first division winner. The winning ticket, this time around, was sold as a bonus. “People think that bonuses don’t count for much, but look what’s happened this time,” said Chris, who described the experience as “very exciting.”

Police progressing Kahu case Wanaka police are starting to build a “pretty comprehensive picture” of what happened on the night of May 9. Detective Senior Sergeant Colin Blackie said they were very happy with the response from the community assisting in the investigation.

However, they are still trying to track the movements of the victim and two other people seen wearing crash helmets around the time of the assault. The two men charged with the assault have continued name suppression. A cleansing was also carried out

at the Night n Day foodstore earlier this week, and Det Blackie said it was well attended by dairy staff, witnesses of the event and a large number of police. Police expect to make another statement about the case on Thursday night (May 21) or Friday morning.

Work will soon start on construction of the much-anticipated Wanaka Sports Facility, with Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) announcing on May 20 that construction is due to begin “within weeks.” The building contract has been awarded to Cook Brothers Construction Limited, who may establish on site at Three Parks within the next week. Three companies submitted tenders for the project worth $13.9 million. Marc Bretherton, QLDC’s General Manager of Planning and Development, said the bid chosen was within the council’s budget. The design of the facility will allow for a swimming pool to be added in the future, with timing dependent on the outcome of submissions to the Council’s 10 Year Plan, which are currently under consideration. The facility is due to be open by June 1 2016.

Old Cromwell smokefree bookreview A monthly book review from the Wanaka Library...

Staff Reporter Wanaka Sun The Cromwell Heritage Precinct has become the latest outdoor environment in Central Otago to become smokefree. The move is the result of work carried out by Old Cromwell Inc. and Central Otago & Wakatipu Smokefree Coalition (members include WellSouth, Cancer Society, Public Health South, Dunstan Hospital and Uruuruwhenua Health). WellSouth health promotion coordinator Sarah Berger said smokefree outdoor environments are now becoming more the norm. Only 15.1% of New Zealand adults over 15 are smokers, and of them, 80% of smokers want to quit, she said. “Having smokefree environments represents

the views of the majority and helps those who wish to quit smoking. “It’s fantastic to see places like Cromwell Heritage Precinct going smokefree. It’s a beautiful part of Central Otago and now it will be an even nicer environment for local children, youth, families and visitors. “Having the area smokefree will reduce

cigarette butt litter, odour and second-hand smoke, making the precinct more pleasant for shopping, dining or strolling around.” Implementing Smokefree Cromwell Heritage Precinct will not require enforcement but will take an educative approach through signage. Sarah said generally most smokers are considerate when

informed about smokefree areas. Old Cromwell Inc. board member Barbara Emmitt said the board was more than happy to support the initiative from the local Smokefree Coalition to promote the precinct as a smokefree environment. “We believe it will add to the enjoyment of the precinct by all our visitors.”

It is Christmas Eve 2024 and Hugh “Guts” Stanton, a former special forces soldier turned celebrity adventurer, is summoned to Cambridge University by his former history professor, Sally McCluskey. She has a proposition for him: “If you had one chance to go back into the past and change history, where would you go and what would you do?” Hugh’s world has collapsed with the recent death of his beloved wife Cassie and their two children in a hit-and-run accident and he sees nothing but a bleak future ahead. With no ties to hold him, he is ideally placed to accept the assignment – to go back in time to 1914 and “right history’s greatest single mistake.” He will attempt to prevent the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo on June 28 1914, thus preventing World War One and all the subsequent horror of the 20th Century. This is a very cleverly written time-travel story, full of adventure and colourful characters, and some wonderful humour. The story twists and turns, surprises and shocks, right until the last page. There are challenges for the reader in the complexities of time travel, but this novel sparkles with historical detail and raises interesting ethical questions about

playing around with history. It is an engrossing story. Enjoy the journey, through Europe and history – to Constantinople and Berlin, and beyond. - Kate Sidey Wanaka Public Library Association

Lake Wanaka remains high but flooding concerns have eased, the Otago Regional Council says. The lake rose last week after several days of rain. The regional council’s director of hazards, engineering and science, Dr Gavin Palmer, said while the flooding risk had now lessened, following a spell of dry weather, the council was “maintaining a watch” on the lake. The Clutha River and Lake Wakatipu are also higher than normal. Children at Wanaka Preschool visited the lake, which was high enough to cover the jetty, during their ‘Explorers’ programme (pictured). Central’s big funding decision Staff Reporter Wanaka Sun Major changes to the way wastewater, drinking water and stormwater services are funded in Central Otago District are being considered by the council. At present “three waters” schemes in Central Otago District are funded by those who are connected to the scheme. This means large discrepancies between ratepayers in neighbouring towns. Most of the district’s three waters infrastructure also needs to be upgraded, as it is aging, no longer meets legislated standards, or community expectations. In the Central Otago District Council’s proposed Long Term Plan, from 2015 to 2025, which the c o u n c i l wi l l c on s i d e r adopting in coming months, new methods for funding the “three waters” services are proposed. One of the options is a partially subsidised funding model. Under this proposal,

each scheme would be mainly funded by those ratepayers who are connected to it, but the amount they would pay would be capped at an agreed level and any extra would be subsidised by ratepayers throughout the district who were, or could be, connected

The other option is a fully subsidised model where all ratepayers who were, or could be, connected to a scheme would pay the same amount for their three waters services, regardless of which scheme they were connected to. Mayor Tony Lepper said small communities’ inability to pay for expensive three waters upgrades was recognised as a problem which needed to be addressed throughout New Zealand. “The larger the population to

“We have signalled that we would like to move to a similar model…The discussion around this decision has been going on for some time and we see this as the final step in making Central Otago an affordable place to live in,” Mr Lepper said. Central Otago District residents’ and ratepayers’ views on the new funding proposals have been sought and, if the council decides to implement one of them, it will come into effect during the 2016/17 financial year.

Entries in the annual Central Otago Awards close on May 27. There are five categories in the awards - Business Excellence, Tourism, Community Service, Apprentice, and Youth. Central Otago brand manager, Shirley Howden, said the awards are a great opportunity to “honour excellence, innovation and the amazing contribution many make to our community. “There is still time for people to nominate someone for the community service and youth awards, to encourage businesses to enter either the tourism or business excellence award categories, or for business owners who know they have a top rate apprentice to enter their apprentice for the 2015 Apprentice Award.” The awards evening will be held in Roxburgh on September 4 with guest speaker Sir Ray Avery, founder and chief executive of the award-winning development agency, Medicine Mondiale. Sir Ray also won the 2010 New Zealander of the Year Award. Entry forms can be downloaded from the new Central Otago Awards website: www.centralotagoawards.co.nz, or collected from any Central Otago District Council office.

LandSAR hones skills Staff Reporter Wanaka Sun About 40 Land Search and Rescue volunteers gathered near Wanaka on Saturday for the first LandSAR competition held in Upper Clutha. The annual Tautuku Cup, which has been running for nearly a decade, used to be held in the Catlins, but from this year is being spread around the southern South Island. LandSAR volunteer Roy Bailey said the competition involved eight teams of four or five volunteers, from Waitaki south, including Stewart Island, competing in various rescue scenarios in a range of terrain. Keen to help others with diabetes Aimee Wilson Wanaka Sun Wanaka multisporter Emily Wilson has been picked as the next young leader to represent New Zealand at the World Diabetes Congress in Vancouver this year. Only diagnosed in November last year after racing overseas, she said it was actually exercise that saved her, and that is the message she is keen to share with other diabetic young people. “Exercise regulates your blood sugars really well. It really is the cheapest medicine.” There is Type 1 diabetes on both sides of her family but she has just been tested negative for that, and is still awaiting blood results to confirm whether her condition is genetic or not. young leader and will travel to Vancouver in November, to be involved in training and seminars by international diabetes experts. “I was stoked to be picked. Super stoked. Because I specialised in exercise physiology at

university and I am really enthused about looking after people and getting people more active.” Although naturally pretty disappointed to find out she had diabetes, she knows there is always someone else out there who is worse off.

“It’s all about attitude. Diabetes is such a fickle thing.” Managing her diabetes while training in competitive sport was a huge challenge but that hasn’t stopped her doing what she loves. She is currently training

for the multisport nationals in Rotorua at Queens Birthday weekend. The 24-year-old is also a swim instructor, lifeguard, primary school sports instructor and helps run an after-school and school holiday programme. One of her big projects will be to set up a support group in the Upper Clutha to help other young people with diabetes. “It can be overwhelming if you don’t have the right information, and I want to stop all the denial and shame as well.” She is keen to touch base with anyone in the area who has the condition like her, and will be liaising with all the schools, to develop more education and prevention initiatives. To get in touch with Emily email her on wilem526@gmail. com.

Wanaka Workshops

From Wastebusters projects to earthquake aid in Nepal Gina Dempster Many people in Wanaka know Sophie Ward. She was part of Sustainable Wanaka, started the “Bag the Habit” campaign to get people to take their own bags to the supermarket and worked with us at Wanaka Wastebusters for seven years. She left last winter for an extended stay in Nepal, volunteering and doing trips with her husband Mal Haskins who is a mountain guide and adventurer. When we all heard about the massive earthquake in Nepal three weeks ago, our first thoughts were for Sophie and Mal. Luckily they were safe, although villages they had trekked through just days before had been completely obliterated. Video footage they posted on Facebook shows no sign that anyone had ever lived there, with every trace of human habitation swallowed up by the earth. I can’t imagine anyone with better skills and training to help in that terrible situation than Sophie, an experienced project manager who can break any project down into a series of next steps, and Mal, a bundle of energy whose work involves expedition logistics and taking people into risky places and getting them home

again. Having lived and travelled in Nepal for the past nine years, they had deep connections in the community. While I’d never wish such a nightmarish experience on them, it’s almost as if they were the right people to help. In the first chaotic days after the earthquake, it became obvious that aid was not reaching the more remote and mountainous regions. Mal and Sophie worked with Nepalese friends to quickly mobilise a

team and take supplies and medical help into the Helambu and Solu Khumbu regions. They set up a Facebook page to report on their progress and a Givealittle page to raise funds for their mission. So far they’ve raised an incredible $58,000 since the earthquake on April 25. The money is being used to buy food, water, medical supplies, shelter and building materials for Sherpa communities and other families in the mountainous region.

Tarpaulins were the first choice for immediate shelter, but they have been extremely difficult to get hold of in Nepal. The team had to deal with some desperate looting of their supplies as they tried to reach the more remote communities who were still waiting for any help. Despite the difficulties, they’ve managed to reach remote communities, bringing them hope, medical treatment and essential supplies. With the second large earthquake and the monsoon approaching, the land is extremely unstable and travel sounds very difficult. The Nepal Earthquake – Helambu, Solu Khumbu relief fund set up by Mal and Sophie is trying to get building materials like roofing iron, nails and hammers into the region before the roads become impassable. They’re also assisting other aid teams setting up in Kathmandu. Along with their many other friends and former work colleagues, I’m in awe of what they’ve managed to achieve. If you want to help them, you can donate directly to their Givealittle page (we have a link on our website www. wanakawastebusters. co.nz) or there’s a collection jar in the Wanaka Wastebusters shop, on the counter.

I remember - By Stuart Landsborough

Red Bridge book donated Wanaka early-childhood teacher Jenny Moss has written a picture book on the Luggate Bridge for local children to enjoy. The Luggate Community Association is donating copies of ‘A Grand Red Bridge’ to all preschools and primary schools in the Upper Clutha, and to all Luggate families with young children. In October this year centennial celebrations will also be held to commemorate the bridge, and it is hoped children will become interested in the local history, “and will be able to remember when they are adults, the Centennial celebrations of our bridge and the history leading up to the building of the bridge,” Jenny said. Pictured: Montessori teacher Bev Reynolds reads ‘A Grand Red Bridge’ to the Kiwi class at Montessori.

I think it could have been in the year 1974 that Prince Charles visited Wanaka. At the time my wife and I had just opened our business: Puzzling World (or the Maze as it was known in those days) and whilst my wife ran the business, I went back to work as the head steward at Wanaka Hotel. The hotel was completely booked out for two nights by the Prince, lots of policemen and quite a few helicopter personnel. The Prince came for a day’s fishing at Lake Hawea. He caught three fish, and talk at that time was that his twonight stay for fishing cost about twenty thousand dollars per fish! Twenty thousand dollars some 40 years ago in today’s currency would probably be the equivalent of something like $150,000 to 200,000 dollars per fish! It is said that there were three helicopters

at his disposal: one to fly him to Lake Hawea, one just in case the first one wouldn’t start, and the third had a rescue winch in case either of the two helicopters crashed and there was need of rescue! True or false, I don’t know, but it is a good story! I remember the Prince was driven up to the front door of the hotel where he disembarked. He then had to smile and walk between two rows of happy cheering members of the public. Another steward and I held the two front doors open for him to enter. Charles had walked almost into the hotel when he must have remembered that he had forgotten to do the obligatory chat to one or two people, so he wheeled around and went back out to do his duty! Naturally, the Prince was staying in the hotel’s suite and that is where

he ate his dinner. There came an order for some drinks, which I, as head steward, took to the room. He seemed very nice. A little later an order came down for a bottle of wine. Now, one of my steward’s was an Englishman called John Bentley, and he was an absolute royalist, and me being somewhat of the opposite opinion, I suggested he take up the wine – he was out of this world with happiness! John served the Prince for the rest of the evening. My wife (of that time) was sitting in the stewards’ pantry just being part of the occasion. When John brought down the Prince’s dirty drinking glass, my wife grabbed one and ‘souvenired’ it! I don’t know what happened to that glass. The Prince left the next morning with his retinue and we never got an invite to his palace.

Hard Case Preparing for the inevitable Despite that age-old adage “there’s nothing surer than death and taxes”, as a species, we’re not that great at confronting one of life’s dead certainties: our own mortality. Newsflash – notwithstanding some speedy cryogenics breakthrough, we’re all going to shuffle off this mortal coil one day. Even our most hardy avoidant, denial mechanisms, (including skirting around the very real need to not only make a proper Will, but also keep it current) are an antidote to that reality. Janice’s Lesson Number 1: To die “intestate” – legal speak for “without a valid will” – can be a harsh and onerous, albeit unintended, legacy to lumber loved ones with once you’re gone. I’ve seen the upheaval and distress caused more times than I care to remember. Having helped many hundreds of clients prepare and update their Wills over the years, I can say, with total conviction, the process is likely far simpler than, and not anywhere near as expensive as, you might fear. And the peace of mind from finally taking action is well worth the effort. By leaving a proper, well-drafted Will you’ll be helping spare those closest to you unnecessary – and often significant – delays, stress and costs. So, where to start … Just as no two people are the same, neither are any two Wills. Depending on your age and stage, family dynamics and assets, the

PAGE 10

end result may differ but, generally though, the same key considerations apply. First and foremost, who will administer your will as your executor? Second, if you have dependent children, how will they be provided for both financially and, especially, if they are left without a living parent, care-wise? Who will be their guardian? Third, who do you want your assets to go to? Don’t forget, though, adult children and other living relatives may be able to lay claim to your assets, so any special circumstances and considerations need to be documented and factored in. The law expects a certain treatment of all parties and that is where proper advice is invaluable. Janice’s Lesson Number 2: If you needed further incentive to take the leap and get your Will drawn up or updated, here’s a little food for thought: no valid Will equals your assets being divided as per the law’s default provisions. Funnily enough, I don’t recall many clients making a will wanting what the law dictates should happen if they die intestate. In short, the only way to avoid what you wouldn’t like is to ensure your wishes are properly documented, and tailored in line with your personal circumstances and responsibilities. So, what would happen if you died tomorrow without a valid will? The answer depends on what family you leave. Where you have a spouse or partner and children, then your spouse or partner receives any per-

sonal chattels, the first $155,000 and a third of anything left after that. The children receive the remaining two thirds. Where there are no children, living parents are awarded one third of the assets, after the spouse or partner’s entitlement (chattels and $155,000 plus two thirds of the remaining assets) is paid. Depending on which relatives you have, there are other set provisions if you don’t have a spouse or children. If you have no living descendants and no Will, then your worldly goods go to the Crown coffers. Asserting your will An obvious, but commonly overlooked, actuality is a Will is the one legal document you’ll have absolutely no ability to change, once it comes into force. Janice’s Lesson Number 3: A common misconception is that, with a documented Will, whatever you say will go after your death. Not necessarily. A Will can be contested in some circumstances. That’s just one reason why it’s so imperative you work carefully through the issues specific to you and your loved ones, and ensure, as much as you can, that it’ll pass the legal litmus test if needs be. A DIY will kit might be better than nothing – or not. The do-it-yourself approach can fit part of the bill – actually documenting your wishes – but it doesn’t come with the allimportant personalised advisory component. Even if you use a will kit or draft something completely from

scratch yourself, it’s a good idea to at least run it by your lawyer to ensure there aren’t any fishhooks that a layperson wouldn’t necessarily be expected to pick up. If you’re opting to go it alone purely as a cost-saving measure, it’s worth bearing in mind that lawyers usually charge only a nominal fee, at most, for preparing a Will. Before deciding which route to go, call your lawyer and ask for a quote or estimate of their fee and what’s involved. All’s not lost Before 2007, all was pretty black and white when it came to administering a Will. The interpretation was largely quite literal, and if an aspect wasn’t documented in a valid Will, or was documented incorrectly, then it was difficult to fix it. That changed with the Wills Act 2007, the effects of which have gained increasing traction during recent years when parties have turned to the Courts.

Janice Hughes plan in executing a Will, the uninitiated tend to be taken aback at just how long it takes to work through all of the prescribed formalities. But where there is a Will, there is a way – and the more robust and current the Will, the clearer, quicker and less costly that way will likely be.

Please remember this information

While it used to be, for example, some or all of a Will would likely have been thrown out on its ear if it didn’t follow the absolute letter of the law, contained clerical errors or had ambiguities, this law relaxed things a little. Nowadays, Courts have far more power to consider wishes documented less formally, and to correct or clarify mistakes and discrepancies. Janice’s Lesson Number 4: While the Wills Act 2007 certainly means things are less rigid, it’s not one to be hanging your loved ones’ hat on. Even when everything goes to

THURSDAY 21.05.15 - WEDNESDAY 27.05.15

is designed as a general guide and should not replace specific legal advice on a particular issue.

Thirty-two Mount Aspiring College futsal players recently attended the Otago Secondary Schools’ futsal tournament in Dunedin. They had an early start, leaving Wanaka at 5am to get to Dunedin in time. Four teams entered in the tournament and all played extremely well, with the senior girls coming first, the junior girls were placed second, the senior boys third and the junior boys fourth. The senior girls’ team is pictured from left: Lily Waters, Gina Lilly, Megan Bryan, Connor Moore, Sam Hayr, Jacinta Borer. EDITORIAL Wanaka is jumping on the speed dating wagon and will soon have its first Cupid Club. The problem at the moment is there is a lack of men keen to be involved. So either there is a shortage of single men in Wanaka, they are afraid to date or just prefer Tinder. Tinder is a phone app which is essentially a highlysimplified version of online dating, without the stigma. Latest statistics show there are 82 single men for every 100 single women in New Zealand, with these numbers varying by town and region. This has been described as a man drought – could Wanaka be a victim of this? So far only four men have put their hand up for the Cupid Club (and 16 women – but it’s growing by the minute). It’s a very brave thing to be speed dating because you are admitting to the world you are in need of companionship. But as the organiser said to the Wanaka Sun, it sure beats roaming through profiles online to find your match – how do you find that spark or connection on a computer? Aren’t we all trying to revert back to the old ways of the world, organic food, biking instead of driving… so what happened to good old fashioned dating? For goodness sake, if you’re single and unhappy then do something about it!

Kahu. One of our own. Kahu has been raised in Wanaka. He is a friend of our family. We have known him a long time. He is one of our own. The fact that he was seriously assaulted, by men in their thirties - who have received name suppression, is appalling! He could have been any one of our sons, we don’t need to travel to the other side of the world to fight danger. We have it right here in our beautiful town. Tourist town. The culture that has developed is opening a wound that can only be fought by caring a whole heap more for each other than we do. Our young people are receiving injuries in their own backyards that are equivalent to being sent to war. The cost of what has happened affects us all. Would you please say a prayer for Kahu? His children and family. Would you please say a prayer for the men that remind us to fight for peace. Life is precious to those who value it. Michelle Cotter Abridged

Currie continues fine form Staff Reporter Wanaka Sun Braden Currie has continued his winning streak by taking out the USA Triathlon Off-Road National championship last weekend. Currie fought off a late challenge from 10-time XTERRA USA National Champion Josiah Middaugh, to claim victory at the Oak Mountain State Park course in Alabama. He was thrilled to hold on for the closely-fought

win, in what is his first of four United States-based XTERRA races this season. “I was super stoked as it was a good tough event and I had to fight to the end and only managed to take it out in the last 100m to win by three seconds over Josiah,” Currie said. “It was a great mental booster for me to be able to take the win as I still feel like I have plenty left in the tank for my up coming United States races and building up

to the XTERRA World Championships near the end of the year.” This win is Currie’s third victory in a row, after he dominated the XTERRA Asia-Pacific Championships and the New Zealand XTERRA championships last month, plus won the Coast to Coast for the third consecutive time in February. Having recently travelled to the United States, Currie will now base himself in Steamboat

Springs, Colorado, where he will put in some solid training as he prepares for his next event - the USA Northwest Xterra Championship next month. “My build-up was as good as I could have hoped for, but I feel like I’ve got a lot to improve on, with a good four-week block coming up. On to the next adventure and looking forward to getting some training in, in the mountains,” Currie said.

Hawea netball team travel to Alexandra Hawea Flat School’s netball team attended the Alexandra Primary Schools tournament last Saturday and their year six team won the tournament. They appreciate the support from the local community and businesses in providing them with club hoodies for their players. The players and parents also held a cupcake stall at the netball courts, for Hawea Flat School appeal to purchase a shelter box for Nepal. With cupcakes selling for just one dollar each and lolly bags for fifty cents, their total fundraising of $325 is a great effort. First win for MAC The Mount Aspiring College 1st XV won its first game for the season on Saturday. The team members travelled to Mosgiel and deservedly beat Taieri College 33–17 after playing their best rugby of the season. Playing with a strong wind, the MAC team scored two quick tries and looked as though they would rack up a big score. However, they failed to make the most of their opportunities and only

led 12–0 at the break. Taieri looked confident after half-time and quickly levelled the score. However, the MAC team kept its composure and scored three quality tries to seal the game. Ellis Meyer-Budge continued his fine form at first-five and Player of the Day Oliver Jarvie and Blair Underwood combined very well in the midfield. Up front, Zac Shields and Toby Lee had strong games while Teegan Vink

and Bailey Nolet got through a lot of work in the loose. Point scorers: Tries: Meyer-Budge, Sam Richards, Matt Molloy, Liam McFall and Nolet. Underwood kicked four conversions. The team takes on Kavanagh College at MAC at 1pm this Saturday. The game promises to be a close and exciting encounter. Pictured: Ellis Meyer Budge carving through the Taieri defence.
