Wanaka Wastebusters is about to get a whole lot busier after taking over some of Central Otago’s recycling contract. The Central Otago District Council agreed this week to allow Wanaka Wastebusters to manage recycling drop-offs in Alexandra, Roxburgh, Ranfurly and Tarras. But it’s also the end of Central Otago Wastebusters - which has closed its operation after 15 years as the district’s only recycling operation. Wanaka Wastebusters starts work in Central Otago immediately, meaning it will manage the operation, own the assets and pay the staff. Eight local staff will continue to work at Central Otago Wastebusters. Wanaka Wastebusters general manager Sue Coutts said the Wanaka team was really excited “because there’s been a lot of work behind the scenes to get to this point.” She said the council has been open to considering an alternative because they see the value of local jobs and a culture of reuse and recycling. “Without their willingness to find a solution, we would have had to step back and let Central Otago Wastebusters fall over. We are looking forward to working more closely with CODC as we are both committed to working towards zero waste. Central Otago Wastebusters was on the brink of insolvency last year and was bailed out by the council.

Employing 19 full-time staff and 10 parttimers, it began cutting staff in May after losing the recycling contract. The new contract, for an expanded recycling service, was won by AllWaste, which also has the district refuse collection contract. “We’re stoked that Wastebusters will continue to run in Central Otago, and that community enterprise lives to fight another day,” Sue said. Wanaka Wastebusters communications manager Gina Dempster said they will be collecting and processing recycling from the drop-offs using staff and trucks based at Central Otago Wastebusters.
The three year contract is worth $108,900 per year for up to 450 tonnes of material collected and processed, based on fortnightly collections from these facilities. “When we looked at taking on running Central Otago Wastebusters, it became obvious to Sue that it wouldn’t be financially viable to run it solely as a reuse shop and business recycling operation. “Adding the recycling drop-offs to the operations and having the three year contract will give us the financial security to reinvigorate Central Otago Wastebusters as a strong community enterprise,” Gina said.
Funding boost for Dunstan Hospital Health service gains Ministry support for registrars Aimee Wilson Wanaka Sun

unstan Hospital has secured direct funding from the Ministry of Health for ongoing registrar training under a new arrangement. Central Otago Health Services Ltd (COHSL) chair Russell McGeorge said he understood Dunstan was the first rural hospital in New Zealand
to have secured this. “As a rural hospital we have trained one registrar at a time with funding being sought from the DHB. We have a waiting list of registrars looking to train with us, and we are now in a position to have two registrars training with us with direct funding from the Ministry,” he said. Wanaka GP Mark Feeney spoke about the importance of retaining registrar training at the ‘Save Services at Dunstan’ public meeting in May.
He said 40 registrars had successfully been trained at Dunstan since the scheme started, and it had grown as a centre of excellence for rural health. Mr McGeorge said securing the registrar funding is a “significant help for Dunstan in being able to support the growing demand for inpatient services, while at the same time contributing to the training of rural hospital medical specialists.” Story continues page 2...

New health board commissioner making moves The new Southern District Health Board Commissioner team, Kathy Grant (commissioner), Graham Crombie and Richard Thomson (deputy commissioners), is travelling the district for the next two weeks for a series of meetings with staff and visits to community facilities. “It is essential that we engage with staff and community leaders early on and we are looking forward to talking to a cross section of people during these visits,” Mrs Grant said. “It is critical that we engage with all our stakeholders and reassure communities. We intend to assist the DHB to deliver the sustainable services that communities need. There are no quick fixes. We are not here to cut services. We are in place to find a way to assist the DHB out of its financial difficulties over a longer term. “We will be open and transparent with staff and the community and these meetings are a great way to start that process.” It is business as usual at Dunstan Hospital after Central Otago Health Services Limited (COHSL) finally reached agreement with the Southern DHB for the 2015-16 year. Outpatient services have not been affected by the funding cuts and therefore ward capacity can be maintained at current capacity for another 12 months. The DHB wanted to cut funding by up to $1 million but after the public meetings across the district and further negotiations, this has been reduced to a funding cut of just $200,000.

“This will provide us with the time to develop a new service purchase and delivery model with the SDHB and the Ministry of Health, and secure a longer-term contract,” COHSL chair Russell McGeorge said. Part of the agreement with the DHB is an undertaking that they will work with COHSL towards more ‘integration of services’ offered by Dunstan and Queenstown Lakes District Hospitals. “We at Dunstan see more integration as being essential to achieve better and more cost effective public health delivery in the high-growth inland area. “Each of the two hospitals has particular strengths and capabilities and we should be maximising the use of these strengths in the inland region,” Mr McGeorge said. Conversations with the Ministry of Health about the integrated network across the region are already underway, and form part of the discussions the commissioner will be having with staff at the hospitals. “We will need to work hard to pull this new model together within 12 months, but I know that we can do it – we have already proven that we are innovative, resilient and committed to delivering the best care possible,” Mr McGeorge said. In summary, the 12-month agreement provides the following: •Rollover of existing contracts with the SDHB for another 12 months •$200,000 reduction to the current SDHB funding (a 2% cut rather than the 5% cut sought by the DHB) •no change to COHSL’s outpatient clinics or its funding, regardless of the outcome of the outpatient
services review •adopting an entirely new contract approach for 2016/17, which will include the DHB making an annual contribution to inflationary pressures and recognising Dunstan’s population growth in our funding contract. Dunstan Hospital management recognised that the community made it clear that keeping inpatient capacity was an absolute priority Manager Karyn Penno said agreement from the DHB that they won’t change the outpatient funding for this year “is a huge relief and means that we won’t have to make the drastic reductions that would otherwise have been required. However we still needed to make some significant savings in our budget to make it all fit.” Savings made for the 2015-16 year include: •capital expenditure for 2015-16 will be kept to an absolute minimum, and in return COHInc have agreed to a one-year ‘holiday’ on the rent that COHSL pay to use the community-owned assets •with the support of the Central Lakes Trust, ceasing the depreciation payments for the CT scanner (ie the money COHSL are paying to COHInc to put aside to buy a replacement scanner when the time comes) •staff training will be pretty much mandatory-only for the next 12 months •medical staff have agreed to continue with their current roster for another six months •grounds maintenance will be done by volunteers rather than contracted out •numerous efficiency measures designed by staff, including significant changes to the stock management system, a complete revamp of the patient records filing system, savings in linen costs, moving to generic business cards.
Group to weed out Lagarosiphon
INBRIEF
Aimee Wilson
New members welcome at Alpha Club
Wanaka Sun Lagarosiphon issues in Lake Dunstan are getting extra special attention, with LINZ biosecurity manager David Mole making a special trip to Cromwell next week (July 9). The Otago Regional Council will also be present at the meeting to discuss various issues in connection with the control of lagarosiphon. Cromwell resident Andrew Burton said he and a few concerned others are currently formalising a plan to get a group together to tackle the problem. The new group will be called ‘Guardians of Lake Dunstan’ and will run similarly to the Guardians of Lake Wanaka. Cromwell boaties were alarmed at the current rate of lagarosiphon growth around the shores of Lake Dunstan this summer, and took their plight to the Government. Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) said last year that total control of the weed was a priority in Lake Wanaka, but in Lake Dunstan they were originally only looking at reducing the impact on lake users. MP Jacqui Dean got involved when it was clear the weed had not been controlled at all, and LINZ had another go prior to Christmas. The authorities decided in early January, when the second attempt was also unsuccessful, that more has to be done to get rid of the huge weed growth around the lakeshore, and discussions are under way about how to do that. The meeting next week will not be open to the public.

Come along to the Alpha Club next Tuesday for some fun and fellowship. The Alpha Club of Wanaka was formed in 1993 by a group of women who meet regularly to raise funds to support deserving organisations in the Upper Clutha. The group has so far raised $84,000 which has been given to 23 organisations, and also organises over 80 luncheons for people who live alone. New members are welcome. The next meeting will be held on July 7 at 6pm. For more information contact Val on 443 8516.
New round of grants from CLT The Central Lakes Trust has approved a grant of $4,000 to enable the Connected Media Charitable Trust to hold free one-day film-making workshops for up to 50 participants in Wanaka and Alexandra. Workshops will cover the process of idea generation, story development and hands-on short film-making. “The workshops equip young people with the skills needed to first identify ideas or issues that would make worthwhile films. We then help them to develop those ideas into film concepts and to create several short films based on a selection of those ideas. In addition, the workshops provide inspiration to explore some of the big issues of their time in spaces where they are socially active, online, on video and on their phones,” project manager Chris Widdup said.

Queenstown International Airport expanding operations Maddy Harker Wanaka Sun It’s been 20 years since Queenstown launched its first international flight, and the airport has celebrated by opening a new international terminal worth a staggering $17 million. And demand requires it – Queenstown Airport is the busiest and fastest growing airport in Australasia, welcoming over 1.3 million visitors each year. In fact, yesterday’s 1540 international passengers surpassed the previous record of 1362, making it the biggest day ever for international passengers. And airport chief executive Scott Paterson expects that record to be “smashed” on Saturday. In the last ten years alone, international passenger volume has increased from 24,000 to 381,000. The new terminal – an expansion on the southern end of the terminal build-
ing – has doubled the size of the airport’s international operations. It includes two new gate lounges, expanded airside retail outlets and a third baggage carousel. International travellers will also be pleased to know that there is now a new Duty Free store. In the next decade, international passenger volumes are expected to rise again, this time to more than six million. Queenstown Airport Corporation chief executive Scott Paterson couldn’t be more pleased with the new terminal. “Back when our first international flight arrived on July 1, 1995, and for several years after, passengers were processed by Customs in a makeshift space outside the terminal so we’ve come a long way in 20 years,” he said. The 4100sqm terminal is set to provide world-class services, he said. “Being able to offer a top-class facil-
Heavy Snowfall puts TBFree 1080 drop on hold at Mount Roy hold Naoise Wolsey Wanaka Sun The proposed 1080 drop at Mount Roy by OSPRI’s TBFree programme has been put on hold due to unsuitable weather conditions. TBFree is a subsidiary of OSPRI New Zealand (Operational Solutions for Primary Industries), and last undertook aerial possum control in the area in 2006-7. OSPRI’s Southern South Island programme manager, Brent Rohloff, stated that the operation was due to take place in May, however unsettled weather patterns, high winds and subsequent snow storms have led to the operation being put on hold. “While aerial operations can take place with snow present, the amount of snow now covering Mount Roy would impact on the overall success of the operation. We need to be confident that the op-
eration will be a success in reducing the possum population, so we only undertake operations when the weather conditions are perfect.” The Mount Roy aerial operation, which has met with some opposition from Wanaka locals due to environmental concerns, is part of the TB eradication plan for the area, where OSPRI aims to reduce the number of possums to manageable levels to eradicate bovine TB. A decision on rescheduling the operation is yet to be made, however, due to the popularity of the area it will not be undertaken during this calendar year. Anti-1080 campaigner Carol Sawyer said she was extremely happy about the decision to put the aerial drop on hold and she will be continuing her campaign to inform the public about 1080. “Every day without 1080 poison is a good day,” she said.

ity in a world-renowned destination has strengthened our position as a key regional and international gateway for New Zealand.”
Following the increased demand for international flights, the airport plans to expand its hours of operation and night flights will begin by next winter.
Ten-year-plan to be adopted by council Staff reporter Wanaka Sun After two years of zero average rates increases, the Queenstown Lakes District Council has adopted its 10-Year Plan. Councillors agreed to an average 1.2% rates rise for 2015-16 and an average 2.8% annual increase over the next decade, while delivering major improvements to infrastructure. The plan was adopted following a public consultation process that began before Easter. In all, 552 people made submissions and as a result of considering those, the council has made some changes to what was originally put forward in the draft plan. Mayor Vanessa van Uden said that a prudent approach to budgeting and spending in previous years had provided “headroom” for major capital projects over the next 10 years that would deliver improvements to residents. “By controlling our expenditure and looking hard at our work programmes, we have gained enough headroom to commit to some large capital projects that will
provide better facilities and services for our residents.” The council also resolved to make several new grants, or increase previous funding levels for 2015-16. They include Lakes District Air Rescue Trust, $25,000, Otago Rural Fire Authority, $85,000; Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust, $12,000, and Happiness House, $15,000. In addition, there is $100,000 for The Cube in Wanaka.
Pool to start in January Construction of Wanaka’s new swimming pool complex will begin in January, the Queenstown Lakes District Council decided this week. Built alongside the new sports facility at Three Parks, Wanaka councillors Lyal Cocks and Calum MacLeod lobbied strongly for the construction to be brought forward. The preliminary design, presented at the council meeting, included new features such as a spa pool and a larger 20m-long and 10m-wide learners’ pool, along with the eight-lane lap pool.

A real class act Maddy Harker Wanaka Sun Frances Ray has been visiting the Holy Family Catholic School with her dog, Falco, over the last two weeks. Falco is a trained mobility assistance dog. He can answer to over 80 demands, ranging from getting the phone for Frances if she has a fall in the shower to collecting clothing for her to help with getting dressed. Frances and Falco have visited seven classrooms so far, providing children with awareness of multiple sclerosis and mobility dogs. Frances, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2001, got Falco in November last year. “He’s a fantastic helper and companion,” she said. Through the Mobility Assistance Dogs Trust, Falco was trained as a puppy, ending with a onemonth stint in prison. The system of training the dogs in prisons was based on a similar initiative in the US. It has a huge benefit to inmates, and helps to keep costs down for the trust, which exists entirely on donations. It costs $50,000 to train a mobility dog, and a further $6000 for the placement of the dog. Frances raised the placement fee through a Givealittle campaign and local organisations’ donations. Frances moved to Hawea four years ago, but

has done “a little bit of everything”, and has lived in Australia, New Zealand and England. With a strong creative streak, her next venture, she hopes, is to make bags and sell them, and she’d also like to continue visiting schools with Falco. “It’s a way of thanking the community and raising the awareness of mobility dogs which survive on donations only. Hopefully I can do it more in the future.”

Elmslie House residents spin some yarns Caroline Harker Wanaka Sun
Long-time Wanaka resident, poet, painter and spinner Gwenda Rowlands (pictured, left) called into Elmslie House last Tuesday to give residents a talk about spinning. She took her wheel and gave two former spinners, residents Noelene Browne (pictured) and Margaret Adams, a chance to have another go. Margaret said she had spun and knitted more than 100 jerseys in her time. Gwenda said she had only been spinning for 20 years. “Before that I was too busy painting,” she said. One member of the group enjoying Gwenda’s talk was her sister Phyllis Aspinall, who is a resident at Elmslie. While she was there, Gwenda chatted to another resident, her childhood friend Bryan Umbers. Gwenda and Bryan told the group Wanaka’s original name of Pembroke had been changed to Wanaka in about 1940 because the council wanted the name to reflect the lake. Gwenda’s visit was organised by activities co-ordinator Adair Simpkin, whose own spinning wheel is at Elmslie for any other residents who want to have a go.

Grants for young snowsports fans Thirty-three young snow sports enthusiasts and their families crowded into the Lake Wanaka Centre on Monday night to welcome the 47 children who have been awarded Grassroots grants for the 2015 ski season. Organised by the Wanaka Ski and Snowsports Club, the grants scheme, in its third year, enables the children to advance their snowsports skills at either Cardrona or Treble Cone. Young club members were entertained and enthralled by the club’s older athletes, Fraser McDougall, Eden McKay and Sam Lee, who
presented excerpts from their northern ski seasons and presented Grassroots certificates and sponsor prizes. Local sponsor shops offered incredible deals to families, children were treated to sausages and ice cream. Wanaka Ski and Snowsports Club caters for adults as well as children, with Social Ski Improvement adult lessons for club members starting soon. Coming up on Saturday July 11 is ‘Race Yr Mate’, a fun, free-to-enter event at Treble Cone. New members are always welcome, and more events and activities by this dynamic club can be found on its website.
Markets to create a winter wonderland
House hunters warned over rental scams Naoise Wolsey Wanaka Sun Wanaka house hunters have been warned to watch out for ‘flatmate scams’. A message posted on the Wanaka Winter Work and Accommodation Facebook page has urged people to be vigilant after scammers using fake Facebook profiles advertised rooms to rent in Queenstown. “They advertise rooms, then come up with some fake story of how their sister is in the hospital in the US or how they are on a holiday so they can’t show you the room, but if you book it (by transferring money for rent and bond) they send you the key. “I got warned by someone who did and never got the room and lost $750. Be careful guys! Only rent a room if someone can actually show it to you,” the Facebook post warned. With large numbers of seasonal workers arriving in Wanaka for winter and a severe
shortage of rental accommodation, desperate house hunters can be an easy target for scammers.“ This type of scam regionally becomes more common around times of high demand for accommodation, so Wanaka would be a target now,” said Martin Cocker, executive director of cyber safety organisation NetSafe. “There are a few variations on the scam, whether it’s flatmates, holiday homes or rental property scams. They say ‘we’ve got a space for you but you have to pay us the deposit in advance and for whatever reason we can’t show you the property’. “Ideally you should always physically visit the property before sending any money. But if you do have to pay in advance, stick to reputable platforms, places that are known to manage rentals, and wherever possible use a protective payment service. “A big warning sign is a request to send money using money transfer to another country,” said Mr Cocker.
TC Cat and Carol Little from Light Up Wanaka help sell fairy lights to local businesses
Naoise Wolsey Wanaka Sun The Wanaka Winter Markets will kick off tonight (Thursday July 2) with 15 stalls including a farmers market, food stalls, crafts and mulled wine. There will also be live music and a guest appearance from the ski field mascots. Organised by volunteer group Light Up Wanaka, the markets will run every Thursday in winter from 4.30pm to 7.30pm in front of Speight’s Ale House on Ardmore Street, and along Bullock Creek towards Francesca’s Italian Restaurant. Volunteer Francesca Voza said: “Our

group, Light Up Wanaka, has been working very hard behind the scenes to make this market a success and we can hopefully attract a lot of people. We wanted to bring a winter market to town so that there is something different and fun for the locals and tourists in the evening. “We are hoping that Wanaka locals will come out and support these locals businesses so we can make this market a success.” Light Up Wanaka has also been busy selling fairy lights to local businesses in order to illuminate the town over winter. “We have already been around the local business and sold 60 sets of fairy lights with everyone turning them on on July 4 to create a winter wonderland feel in the town,” Francesca said.
Young rock stars take the stage Naoise Wolsey Wanaka Sun A record number of musicians are lined up for the Smokefreerockquest Central Otago regional final tonight (Thursday, July 2) in Queenstown. Smokefreerockquest founder and director Glenn Common said there were 24 solo-duos and bands entered, with a very good representation right across all the region’s high schools. And out of the 24 hopefuls taking the stage, eight acts will be from Wanaka’s Mt Aspiring College. The MAC musicians are Acoustic Melody, Parallel, Two, Rosie and Billie, Evie, Near Armageddon, Junior Sound System, and Disconnect. Smokefreerockquest is New Zealand’s only nationwide, live, original music, youth event. “The support that contemporary

musicians get in schools these days is evident in the number of young musicians that get to performance standard,” said Mr Common. “Secondary school teachers offer tuition and encouragement, create space for bands and soloists to practise, they come along to support them at Smokefreerockquest and help them to get the most value from the experience of entering SFRQ – before, during and after.” The top two bands from tonight’s event will go into the national finalists’ judging pool where prizes include $22,000 in Rockshop vouchers, recording studio time and a video/ promo package. The Central Otago final is at Memorial Hall in Queenstown tonight at 7pm.

Trudie Millar – a stylist’s journey from fit to fashion Katie Thompson Wanaka Sun From the moment she opened the bright orange door at her home, Trudie Millar was a fashionable inspiration. Her style and friendly, approachable nature was infectious as we sat down over a cup of tea and chatted fashion. Two years ago, Trudie took her love of fashion and created a business for herself based in Wanaka. Specialising in personal shopping and styling both in New Zealand and internationally, her services also include wardrobe consultations, seasonal edits, colour consulting, business training and guest speaking at events and fundraising. On top of that she also started a boutique shopping service this year for the tourism industry in line with luxury accommodation in Wanaka and Queenstown. Trudie was fortunate enough to be trained on an ‘invite-only’ condition by Stacey Beatson – owner of ‘Stylists Inc’ in New Market, Auckland. She said the training was “fantastic hands-on experience” and she was grateful to be able to learn all the etiquette and tools necessary to begin working as a professional stylist. Trudie has had a passion for fashion from a young age, and was always the ‘go-to’ friend for style advice. As a teenager she was obsessed with image and loved the process of getting ready in the mornings - Trudie’s younger sister would often say: “Trudie you are so vain.” Prior to becoming a stylist, she studied performing arts in Auckland, leading her into
a background of acting, modelling, advertising and voice-over work before becoming a personal trainer for five years. She loved being a personal trainer as it allowed her to take on a mentoring role and inspire other people, however she wanted to encompass her creativity and work one-on-one with people in a more intimate way. Being a people person and having a natural way of building relationships with both the shops and clients is important as a stylist. You need to have great communication skills and directional thinking, while also being very honest but in a constructive way, due to the sensitivity surrounding style issues. Trudie says the past two years have been the “best two years of my life so far”, because she is “doing a job, which I love to do and am skilled at”. At just 37, mother-of-three Trudie has been very successful in her career as a stylist and has had ongoing work with singer Jody Direen for photoshoots and music videos. The best part of her job is being included in people’s transformation process and their boost in self-confidence while getting to shop. While working with her clientele Trudie has noticed that Central Otago’s style personality tends to be natural, and women prefer to blend in than to be noticed. Women in general tend to lack confidence and can be very unsure about how to wear colour, she said. People aren’t confident or efficient when
shopping for their body shapes, and getting ready in the morning can be a daunting task. “I don’t believe that dressing for the day should be influenced by the mood you wake up with. You can create your mood with your style. “Putting effort into your outfit can boost your creativity and productiveness. Style should allow you to see a glimpse of people’s lives and personalities through what they are wearing. Style is about feeling proud of who you are.” Trudie’s performing arts background has been an influence in her personal style today, which she describes as vintage-inspired and eclectic - a collection of modern and old. She enjoys the role of taking on different characters and different looks through her style and “breaking the rules…people will stare so why not give them something to look at?” Trudie also talked about the pressure of being a stylist and always feeling the need to look good, especially when going to big events, but says “you don’t have to spend a lot of money to look great”. Trudie shops locally at both op-shops and high-end stores with influences coming from fashion magazines such as Harpers Bazaar, Vogue and NZFQN and through watching a lot of online European fashion shows such as Chanel. Trudie is currently working on founding her non-profit organisation ‘Freestyle’ which will offer single mothers free and good-quality clothing. Trudie will also be starting a monthly fashion/style column in the Wanaka Sun in the upcoming weeks.

This week the NZ Mountain Film Festival will open the doors for 2015. On opening night the audience will enjoy complimentary nibbles, live music, the art exhibition, the Trade show and of course the first session of adventure films. Mark Sedon, Festival Director, will officially welcome the crowd and this year that includes many filmmakers, adventurers and speakers from all over

the world. Mark says: “The line-up of films, speakers, books and workshops at this year’s Festival is world class. We are especially pleased to see such a strong Kiwi presence competing against the international films. “Each year it is increasingly satisfying to see the Trust’s vision come to life, to inspire people into the outdoors and to live an enriched life through
adventure and filmmaking. We recognise the growth in NZ films coming through as a measure of success for our festival.” Award-winning films and a highcalibre line-up of speakers and events make up the nine-day programme in Wanaka, Cromwell and Queenstown. Tickets are still available online for nine of the 11 Wanaka shows.

Environmental and cultural shows Many of the films in the festival are fast-paced, adrenalinepumping accounts of extreme adventure. For a different pace the Environmental and Cultural film sessions take a closer look at the people and places where the action occurs. Kiwi directors and filmmakers have made a record five of the nine films featuring in the Nature and Environment session on Sunday July 5 and the award for the Best Environmental film goes to New Zealand filmmaker Braydon Maloney for his film Pest Free? This wildlife documentary covers the Department of Conservation’s activity in Fiordland to eradicate pests and save New Zealand’s native vegetation. This genre showcases how filmmakers and adventurers have a keen sense of their environment, and curiosity and care for the people and cultures in the places they explore. Both Wanaka and Queenstown will host Saturday morning sessions on Mountain Culture and the Environment.

The Snow Show is a festival favourite for Queenstown and Wanaka locals and yet again it is expected to be a packed house. The session features the 2015 Best Snow Sports Film Mica to Greenland. This movie includes everything audiences love about skiing and snowboarding films. It perfectly captures what it means to go on a snow adventure with your mates. The cinematography is beautiful, the riding is incredible and the soundtrack is perfect. The audience will be jealous of the powder pillows, stunning steeps and terrain for miles. Winner of a Special Jury Award is a sweet film called The Little Things. The film takes a look at a group of professional snowboarders living sustainably as a way to preserve the sport they love. This film features deep powder and environmentally-conscious ideas for living. This year’s Snow Show will visit Tongariro National Park, Alaska, Switzerland and Greenland and offers a peek inside lifestyles, culture, friendship and a whole lot of amazing skiing and snowboarding.

Bob Moore Wanaka Sun Street photography is a subject that fascinates many photographers who want the challenge to document everyday life and society. This is usually done candidly (without the knowledge of the subject) in an attempt to catch real life situations. There is no specific subject matter or agenda, only the issue of life in general. ‘Street’ is a loose term as it can include pictures taken in any public place, and doesn’t have to include people in the image (although the best photos usually do). The most important thing the photographer is attempting is to create a powerful and compelling image that holds the viewer’s attention and evokes a sense of mood or drama. So what should we be looking for when we are out on the street? One of
the greatest street photographers, Henri Cartier-Bresson, coined the phrase ‘the decisive moment’ - where everything comes together in a perfect moment of time when the shutter is pressed. This involves seeing and reacting quickly to the scene in front of us, without props or control over lighting or the chance to change lenses. In practice, if we see a good street photography scene we don’t have to limit ourselves to taking just one picture. Take several, and then in post processing, choose the image that looks the best. We can catch ‘the decisive moment’ by controlling the subject’s position in the image and observing their facial expression, their hand gesture, or their action and movement. In street photography we can create a strong and interesting image by juxtaposing different elements in our image.
Del Tubb’s picture, ‘Smooth Dude’, is a great example of a street photograph. Del juxtaposed a sharply-focused energetic young man moving swiftly on a skateboard on the left side of the picture with two blurred figures moving in the same direction on the right. Del took the photo in Ardmore Street when he was out with his new camera practising his ‘panning’ technique. Del made the image with a Canon camera with a telephoto lens fixed at 130mm, an aperture of f2.8, and a shutter speed of 1/80th second. Careful composition produced a strong image which needed no cropping and only minimal fine tuning in a light-room. Del converted the image to black and white because he thought this strengthened the image. His picture was well received by the adjudicator of the club’s monthly competition who awarded it a merit and commented: “I like the feeling of movement that has been captured by panning through the subject and blurring the background. The dude is looking pretty relaxed and doing his thing, the pedestrians on the right help to balance the image.” Wanaka Camera Club is dedicated to helping improve the photographic skills of anyone interested in photography. We welcome anyone irrespective of photographic ability - if you know nothing about photography we will teach you. Come along and see what we can do for you. Our next meeting is on Monday July 13 at 7.30pm at the St John’s Rooms, Link Way.

crimescene By Constable Deane Harbison There was very little reported crime this week so we can all be proud of that. However this does not mean we can relax too much. Please maintain your security, in particular those smaller items of value that are of interest to opportunistic thieves. This includes firewood, bicycles, jackets and unlocked vehicles. Two examples of this type of opportunistic crime this week were shown when a person left $200 cash in an ATM. They realised their mistake instantly and returned to find the money gone. Two people at the machine claimed not to have seen any money and quickly left. Secondly a male was arrested for deciding that a mountain bike that was left down town unlocked was an invitation to take it for himself. On Friday morning we all awoke to find our roads in a terrible state. The light splash of rain followed by the heavy frost caused black ice to form in many places. This saw police attend six crashes, some resulting in minor injuries. On Saturday the conditions were only slightly better, but everyone was driving extremely well given the chaos of the day before. With winter in full swing motorists have to be extremely vigilant on our roads. There are many shaded areas that can remain icy during the day and become icy in the early evening. Please keep your families and everyone else safe by driving to the conditions. A local male was stopped on Friday night and was found to be driving whilst disqualified. If you have any information pertaining to the incidents above please call the station on 03 443 7272 to speak to an officer, or to give information anonymously, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Thank you from Dunstan hospital Central Otago Health Services Ltd, and our shareholder Central Otago Health Inc, wish to thank the Central Otago and Upper Clutha communities for the magnificent support provided to us in relation to our funding negotiations with the SDHB, and the funding cuts that they wished to impose. We faced a very serious situation, and the communities’ very visible support for the hospital and its services was an important part of achieving an outcome we can live with for 2015-16. Once again there can be no doubt of Central Otago and the Upper Clutha’s strong interest and support of Dunstan Hospital. A total of 1700 people attended the three public meetings we held and 7577 people signed the petition we have sent to the SDHB and the Minister of Health. From the online petitions alone there were 35 pages of supportive comments, with a number being from people outside our area and some from overseas. All echoed the same theme: that the services provided at Dunstan Hospital are critical to the inland parts of Otago and Southland and must be maintained. I would like to pay particular credit to the management and staff at the hospital. They have been through a very stressful period with both services and jobs under threat. Their response has been professional and superb, with amazing teamwork and a strong “can-do” attitude. The truth of the saying “strength comes from adversity” was graphically illustrated by the YouTube video made by the staff (google Dunstan Hospital Rise Up). Thank you to everyone who has supported us throughout the funding negotiations. Your support made a big difference both to the funding outcome for Dunstan Hospital and to inland rural health services in the southern region. Grants for future netball stars
PHOTO: NIKKI HEATH
Naoise Wolsey said: “Netball is one of the country’s most popular sports with tens of thousands of players at schools, clubs and social teams across the country. “It’s about inspiring players to go further. This might involve kitting out a team with new gear or uniforms, helping players get to an ANZ Championship match to see the action up close this season, or even getting a few professionals to visit their school or club to host a training session – that’s bound to be a life-changing experience for some of our future netballing stars.”
Wanaka Sun ANZ presented new netball gear to Holy Family Catholic School students on Monday as part of a scheme to help future sports stars. This year ANZ is awarding a total of $100,000 in netball grants to help clubs, schools, social teams and fans achieve their dreams. The programme was launched in 2012 to support fans and help netballers get to the next level in the game. ANZ Head of Sponsorship Susan McGregor

MAC dominate Taieri PHOTO: PIP O’REGAN
The MAC 1st XV dominated a feisty Taieri College in all facets of play to record a bonus point 26-7 win on Saturday (June 27). Playing at home in perfect conditions, the MAC team held the Taieri team scoreless in a powerful first half. Quality tries to Liam McFall, John Steven and Olly Jarvie gave the MAC team a handy 19-0 half-time lead. A fired-up Taieri side made the MAC team work hard in the second half with the highlight being a long-
range try to the fleet-footed Matt Malloy. A consolation try to Taieri was a just reward for the visitors. Standout players for MAC were Sam Richards and Toby Lee in the forwards and Liam McFall and the Player of the Day, Matt Malloy, in the backs. With the confidence from a quality performance, the team looks forward to their next game against Otago Boys High School in Dunedin on Saturday.
