Wanaka Sun A Wanaka runner is gearing up for a marathon with one big difference – not all the participants will be human. In just over two weeks podiatrist Raewyn Phillips will be running alongside giraffes, zebras, elephants and other wild animals in the middle of the Masai Mara safari park, Kenya, while competing in a half marathon. The Masai Mara Marathon is run annually, with 1,500- 2000 human participants and many more animal ones. “It will be the middle of the migration season when all the grazing animals make their way through the Rift Valley following all the good grass,” said Raewyn. “Of course, behind the grazers come the hunters so the track is cleared before the race Story continues starts to ensure page 2...

og owners are being advised to take greater responsibility for their pets after a serious attack last week left a dog with puncture wounds. Local woman Vivienne Fitzgerald was walking along the Bremner Bay track with her husband and small dog last week when her dog was “set on” by three larger unrestrained dogs. “The smallest dog picked up my dog by the scruff of her neck and was shaking her. I yelled to my husband who picked up our dog, but the other dog was still attached. The two other dogs were trying to nip her underbelly,” she said. Eventually the smaller dog let go, but the attacked dog required antibiotics, pain relief and injections. “I truly believe if my husband

wasn’t with me my dog would have been torn to shreds,” said Vivienne. Vivienne posted on Facebook’s Upper Clutha Trading Post page to warn others about the dangerous dogs which she said were owned by a male in Wanaka. Vivienne said she received “about a dozen” private messages from people whose pets had been attacked by the same dogs. “People get up in arms about dogs and dog owners in general, but it’s the few among us that let everybody down,” she said. Vivienne’s husband made a complaint to Queenstown Lakes District council and was told someone would be in touch. At the time of writing the couple had not yet been contacted by the council. Queenstown Lakes District Council Regulatory Manager Lee Webster said he understood his officer was investigating the case.

“Everyone who owns a dog must keep it confined and controlled at all times, to protect other people, dogs and wildlife,” Lee said. “Everyone should be able to go out and enjoy the environment without feeling in danger. “And if you are on the receiving end of an attack, it is essential to report it to us as soon as possible. And the more information you can give us about the owner the better. If we have enough details then we can, and will, do something about it.” He said action after reported dog attacks would depend on what had taken place, but could range from “doing nothing right through to prosecution”. Dogs may be labelled as “menacing” or “dangerous” in certain situations, in which case they would be required to be muzzled in public places. And at the most severe end of the scale, a dog would be destroyed.

aim of raising $40,000 to build new family homes for the children. This project is a new initiative and when completed will encompass 15 small homes rather than four large dormitories. The philosophy behind this is to remove the children from an institutionalised orphanage setting and create family units within which they can learn to cook, clean, grow their own vegetables and look after their own chickens. It has not been easy training in the winter in Wanaka with expected temperatures in Kenya being 24 degrees. Raewyn is not after a fast time – just fast enough not to be at the back but slow enough to enjoy fully the thrill of being in a safari park on foot with the running zebra. “I did a lot of training in the summertime as it can be hard to get out in winter, but I’ve clocked up all the hours,” says Raewyn. After spending a day with the children on various activities it’s into the Mara to race with the animals on Saturday August 15. “We’ll be running with giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, antelope and even elephants,” said Raewyn. “Some people think we’re mad but I don’t think it’s dangerous. They clear the track every morning so they’ll make sure there’s nothing lurking in the bushes and they have guards on motorbikes along the course. It’s been running for a few years now and no one has been eaten yet!” As part of the trip participants are encouraged to get their friends to sponsor them with the overall

Whooping cough outbreak Parents have been warned to look out for symptoms of whooping cough in their children after an outbreak has been reported in Wanaka and Hawea. The Southern District Health Board has said that in the past week several children have been reported to the Public Health Unit with symptoms consistent with whooping cough. Two of the children have been confirmed with whopping cough so far. Whooping cough is highly contagious. Symptoms to watch out for include a slight cough and runny nose for up to 14 days before bouts of coughing begin; a “whooping” sound during coughing fits and severe fits of coughing that may end in vomiting. If your child presents any of these symptoms the Southern District Health Board recommends keeping them home from school and taking them to a GP.

Kea enthusiasts have a great opportunity on Monday night when the Kea Conservation Trust (KCT) will be in town with slides, videos and a talk all about kea (August 3, 7.30pm, St John’s Rooms, Link Way). Trust chair Tamsin Orr-Walker is on a two-week South Island tour talking to schoolchildren and at public meetings. The theme of her tour is “Building a Future with Kea” - looking at how communities can become directly involved in long-term kea conservation initiatives. The aim of the tour is to change the way we think, act and live with kea in our communities. Tamsin and fellow trustee Andrea Goodman have already visited the West Coast, Motueka, St Arnaud, Arthurs Pass, Christchurch and Mount Cook, talking to locals about how they can help kea survive. Kea were almost exterminated during a government-sponsored bounty extending over 100 years, and are now listed as nationally endangered with an estimated 5,000 remaining across the South Island. They still face a huge range of threats to their survival including predation, lead poisoning, ongoing conflict with people, interaction with pest control devices, and poisons, not to mention the unknown impact of climate change. The trust says urgent action and support by local communities is needed if kea are to survive. “Communities are often polarised when it comes to their local kea,” Tamsin said. “We have seen communities divided into those who love having these charismatic parrots in their backyard and are happy to kea-proof their property to those who consider ‘the only good kea as a dead kea’.” This year the KCT hopes to develop local community plans for kea conservation initiatives, and

Wanaka Sun The Himalayan Trust has described the amount of money raised at a fundraiser at Wanaka’s Federal Diner as “fantastic”. An anonymous donor added a $5,000 donation after the fundraiser. The donor said he wanted to match the closing bid for a rock belonging to mountaineer Lydia Bradey “as a way of providing a donation to a very worthy cause.” This took the grand total up to $30,000. The Himalyan Trust’s Julia Nicholson said the money raised will make an “enormous difference” to the trust’s rebuild projects, after the earthquakes earlier this year. “We are currently moving into the long-term rebuild phase of our response, and for this we are

INBRIEF Fuel Your School initiative Customers at Caltex Wanaka can help the company raise $100,000 through its new Fuel Your School initiative, which will see schools receive funding towards improving STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) activities in the classroom. Every time a customer redeems their AA Smartfuel savings at Caltex service stations nationwide between July 27 and August 23, Caltex will donate 25 cents to the Fuel Your School fund, with the goal of reaching $100,000 for Kiwi schools. Housing meeting tonight

A meeting designed to gauge interest in ‘affordable’ housing in Wanaka is being held tonight (Thursday July 30) at the Lake Wanaka Centre. The meeting is a Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust (QLCHT) information evening. The trust was created to “manage and deliver affordable housing solutions to those vital to the community who cannot afford it”. During the meeting the trust will outline programmes it runs and discuss housing options it expects to have in Wanaka during the next two years, including some in Kirimoko Park.

When you think of it on a national scale it really hits you,” drummer Tyler Bailey said. Rockquest founder and director Pete Rainey was impressed with the pool of talent. “With support from their schools, great role models on the Kiwi music scene and a lot of creativity and dedication, we’re seeing a very high standard indeed from the bands and solo/duos at this level of the event,” he said. Near Armageddon – described as hard rock with a metal edge – placed first in the

Central Otago Rockquest heats in early June. After that they had only a couple of weeks to send in a 15-minute video for selection in the top 30 (comprising 20 bands and 10 solo-duos). These top 30 acts will be further narrowed down by a panel of music industry judges, and the final six bands and three solo-duos who will go through to the national final will be announced this Friday. “We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it. We’re just stoked to have made it this far,” Tyler said. Time is running out to have your say on the future of Wanaka’s schools. An online survey, which runs until Sunday August 2, is open to the public as part of a Ministry of Education consultation process to identify options for future schooling.“We’ve embarked on consultation with the Wanaka community because this is an area with a growing school population, and we want to understand what the aspirations of the community are for education, and how we can best meet these aspirations,” said Katrina Casey, head of sector enablement and support for the Ministry. The process has already included face-to-face consultations as well as a previous online survey. “Our second online survey asks about preferred location for a Year 1-6 or Year 1-8 primary school, and asks for opinions on the advantages and disadvantages of a range of options to increase future schooling capacity in the area,” said Katrina. Maude Wines won the top prize for their 2014 Pinot Noir. “We are rapt and we think it is the best Pinot Noir we have made to date. It is always a good day when your wine is in the trophy line-up at an international wine show. It’s nice to know that you were in the top 6% of the 1400 wines entered,” said Dan Dineen, owner and winemaker at Maude Wines. “It is a sign of how good the 2014 vintage was and reflects all the hard work that has gone into growing the grapes. “Mountain Rescue: Epic tales of search and rescue in high-country New Zealand” reads like a who’s who of the Wanaka mountaineering fraternity. Written by Phillip Melchior (pictured) it features many Wanaka names, both as rescued and rescuers. Among the 30-plus LandSAR (Land Search and Rescue) team members written about in the book, the following people all feature regularly Lionel Clay, Gary Dickson, Nigel Gee, Alan Gillespie, Milo Gilmour, Mike Johnston, Aaron Nicholson, Davie Robinson, Paul Rogers, Allen Uren, Dave Vass, Geoff Wayatt and Brian Weedon. Wanaka-based author Phillip Melchior was well-placed to write this book. After a career in journalism he became the global managing director of Reuters Media in London. He was also a Wanaka LandSAR volunteer and fundraiser, and was chairman of LandSAR New Zealand for four years. The book tells the stories of eleven rescues in the Southern Alps and their foothills, all but one dating from the past decade. Many have particular significance to Wanaka, including the 2004 New Year’s Eve avalanche on Mount Tasman which took the lives of local guides Paul Scaife and Dave Hiddlestone, and the fatal fall from the southwest Ridge of Mount Aspiring (2008) of Wanaka’s John Pawson, during a climb with local photographer Martin Hill. One of the many great features of this book is the reader gets the true and full story of many rescues they have heard different versions of over the years. It’s a gruelling read, often very sad, but

also humbling, inspiring and fascinating. Another interesting part of Mountain Rescue is a portrait of Wanaka mountain guide Gary Dickson in the introduction. Gary has probably helped rescue more people and pick up more bodies in the Southern Alps than any other volunteer. The description of the realities of dealing with so many accidents and so much death is remarkable. “Mountain Rescue: Epic tales of search and rescue in high-country New Zealand” is being launched by Penguin Random House NZ and Wanaka Paper Plus at Edgewater on Tuesday August 11. The event will be a fundraiser for Wanaka LandSAR.

Library support is still going strong Caroline Harker Wanaka Sun Now in its third year, the Wanaka Public Libraries Association is going from strength to strength with new members signing up all the time. Cochair Claire O’Connell said having a good number of members is very important as it shows the powers-that-be how much support our libraries have. One of WPLA’s latest projects is getting stools made for library patrons who have difficulty standing for long periods of time. They are being designed by engineer Rob Inkster (of Select Technical Wanaka) based on a dalek stool seen in libraries in Dunedin. The stools, while stable when stationary, can be moved along easily as they have a purpose-designed built-in wheel. The WLPA also provides regular free entertainment in the library (organised by Kim Tomlin and most common in the summer months). Members also read to pre-schoolers and the homeschooling group which uses the library regularly on Thursday mornings. The group involves up to 15 children. Claire said the council’s recent decision not to use the library for council services, as had been mooted, can be attributed in part to the

community getting behind the library two years ago and the WPLA being formed. In 2013 when the council threatened staff cuts including to the number of librarians around the district, Wanaka Library supporters took to the streets in protest. That same year Friends of Wanaka Library was reinvented as the Wanaka Public Libraries Association, becoming the voice of the people in support of the local libraries (Wanaka, Hawea and Makarora). The association aims to promote and support reading in all formats, foster representation of the young and the elderly, advocate for the library and librarians, support community-based groups and collaborate on community projects. The WPLA now has a Facebook page and a blog written by Marilyn Duncan (friendsofwanakalibrary.wordpress.com) where people can join the association and learn about new acquisitions and special events. Claire co-chairs the association with Sue Coutts. Other committee members include Sue Moore, Alison White, Marilyn Duncan, Kim Tomlin and Kate Sidey. The library is open from 9am-7pm on Thursdays, 9am-5.30pm on other weekdays and 10am-5pm on Saturdays.

Chocolate milk to hit South Island A date has been set for the South Island launch of Lewis Road Creamery Fresh Chocolate Milk. The popular chocolate milk will be hitting South Island stores from Wednesday, September 2, together with two new flavours developed with two other Kiwi brands. A blend of Lewis Road’s Premium Whole Milk and Whittaker’s 5 Roll Refined Creamy Milk Chocolate, Lewis Road Creamery Fresh Chocolate Milk has been available in the North Island only since October last year, due to the location and capacity of its plant in Mangatawhiri, in the Waikato. It quickly became a sell-out success. “We receive daily requests from dozens of eager South Islanders wanting to know when our chocolate milk will be coming so we are pleased to be able to confirm a South Island launch date,” said Lewis Road Creamery founder Peter Cullinane.

Maddy Harker Wanaka Sun To celebrate the release of their muchanticipated debut EP, Arma Del Amor is holding a release party at Gin and Rasberry this Friday. It’s first-in, first-served, so get there early for the free concert where the band will play their whole EP. The local duo - which comprises vocalist Martine Harding, multi-instrumentalist Danny Fairley and includes drummer Ricky Simmonds for live shows - describe themselves as “on the ambient side of soul-step electronica”. It’s been a super busy year for Arma Del Amor (ADA). A Kickstarter campaign in February raised $13,300 which helped the pair put the finishing touches on their album in a professional studio in Wellington, Organik Muzik Workz. They held a sold-out show at Wanaka’s Festival of Colour in April. Final masters for their album came back in May, and next up was organising album artwork, CDs, distribution plans and the release tour. ADA was granted a MakingTracks video grant for their single, “The Watcher” in June, and the song was released in early July.

“This year has definitely been a big slog of hard work to get things finished, definitely. We could have just done the album and put it up online, but we really wanted to do it properly. We started writing two years ago but since we decided to do it properly, that’s been nearly a year’s process” said Martine. “We’re really happy with the end product, totally, and it’s exciting to play it.” On Thursday ADA will opening for Danish singer-songwriter MØ in Christchurch, followed by the Wanaka show on Friday. Then they’ve got a second release party in Queenstown, and are opening for Kora at the PHOTO:SUPPLIED Winter Games at the end of July too. Danny and Martine have decided to make Friday’s EP release free to thank Wanaka for their support. “We just wanted to say thank you to the Wanaka community and everyone here who supported us, and make sure everyone can come,” Martine said. Doors open at 8pm and Arma Del Amor will play at 11pm. Get in early so you don’t miss out on one of the most anticipated shows this year.

EDITORIAL Phillip Melchior’s gripping new book on highcountry search and rescue offers a fascinating insight into the important work undertaken by LandSAR teams. The national volunteer organisation provides land search and rescue services to lost, missing and injured people all over New Zealand. Phillip was a Wanaka LandSAR volunteer and fundraiser as well as chairman of LandSAR New Zealand for four years. His book tells the stories of 11 rescues in the Southern Alps and their foothills, with both happy and sad endings. One example of a story with a tragic ending took place this week as the bodies of two missing French Canadian tourists were discovered by search and rescue teams about 350m below the Kepler Track – one of New Zealand’s Great Walks. It is believed the men were swept down a gully by a small avalanche. Our thoughts go out to their devastated families and friends. Tramping is a popular pasttime in New Zealand, with a range of stunning tracks across the country for everyone to enjoy. But this week’s events are yet another reminder that disasters can happen and it’s important to be as prepared as possible. So before you embark on your next expedition, remember to plan your trip well, tell someone about your plans, be aware of the weather and track conditions, know your limits and always take sufficient supplies.
