I had absolutely no idea that my kids could still get whooping cough while immunised, so it definitely came as a huge shock,” said Jenny. “The doctor explained that it is common for immunised children to get it, but that the symptoms are lessened so it is still a very worthwhile immunisation. You can feel the judgement when you tell people your kids have it, as they automatically assume you don’t immunise.” Both children’s symptoms started out with a cough, followed

As the illness spreads throughout Wanaka and Hawea, an Alexandra mum, whose children were diagnosed with whooping cough in mid-April, has spoken out about her experience. Jenny Cosgriff, mum to Tahliah (10) and Mac (11 months), was shocked to discover her children had whooping cough despite the fact that they are both fully immunised. “Both were fully immunised and myself and my husband both had

Family pays tribute to war hero
Dambusters pilot Les Munro dies aged 96 Naoise Wolsey Wanaka Sun Wanaka relatives of Les Munro, the last surviving pilot from the World War Two Dambusters raid, have paid tribute to the “inspirational” New Zealander. Les died on Tuesday (August 4) at the age of 96. His niece, Carol Little from Cardrona, told The Wanaka Sun of her pride at being related to such a great man. “My mum was adopted so we only found out that Les was her real brother later on in life, unfortunately after she had passed away. It was so exciting to know who he was. He came to visit us in Wanaka and he has been one of the biggest inspirations in my life,” said Carol. “I had to give a speech the night he came to visit and I said to him, ‘I don’t even know how to start’. He said to write the first three letters that came
into my head on a piece of paper and then just to say what comes from your heart because that’s what he always did. “He was incredible. We’re all very proud to have found him as our uncle later on in life. It was a real privilege to meet him.” Carol’s daughter Kim described Les as “a very humble man” and was lucky to capture some photographs during his last visit to Wanaka in 2010. Tributes have been pouring in on social media after the New Zealand Bomber Command Association announced on its Facebook page that Les had passed away following a spell in hospital with heart problems. “He was a mighty man,” the post said. The Kiwi airman flew a Lancaster bomber in the famous 1943 raid and his medals and memorabilia were donated to Auckland’s Museum of Transport Les Munro with his medals and (inset) on a visit to Wanaka in 2010 with his niece Carol Little. and Technology in April this year.

His doctor tells me that it may be down to his low immunity from having the whooping cough, which means he is picking up all the viral coughs that are out there too. “My advice is to talk to your friends and family about what you are going through, because it is very tiring and isolating and you need support around you.” Public Health South reported that just over half of the notifications have been from people who were either not vaccinated or had incomplete vaccination histories. “Those children who have not been fully vaccinated remain most vulnerable to the infection and it is recommended they are vaccinated as soon as possible to increase their chances of protection,” said Dr Keith Reid, Medical Officer of Health. People have been advised to stay away from work or school if they are feeling unwell and to see a doctor if symptoms persist.

Wine enthusiasts will be delighted to hear about a new 12-day celebration of wine to be held in Central Otago this spring. Down to Earth will be an annual event, and the inaugural celebration will kick off this Labour Day (October 24). More than 30 wine growers from around the region are participating in a wide variety of events, ranging from seeing how wine is made at the boutique Remarkable Winery to helicoptering to the top of Ben Cruachan Mountain in Gibbston Valley to taste Brennan wines. Down to Earth is a Celebration for lovers of wine who want more than a wine tour. It is aimed at visitors and locals with a desire to understand the nuances of wine making in the region and discover for themselves what’s earned Central Otago its world famous reputation. “Bring your boots and raincoats, as well as your high heels and fur coats, and discover the vineyards, wineries and fine dining restaurants of the wider Central Otago region,” says Bruce McGechan, Event Manager and wine enthusiast. And you won’t have to go far – a series of events is being held right here in Wanaka.
Funny French Cars Wine Tours will host “The Inimitable Secret Tasting Tour, Wanaka” where they will showcase local Wanaka wines, including smaller producers who are unavailable to the general public, including some private wineries. Light cuisine will be provided by Forte Food to go alongside the unique tasting of rare and delicious wines. Bistro Gentil will also hold a “Trust the Chef” three-course lunch featuring the best of seasonal ingredients, paired with matching wines from local winery, Maude. Awardwinning chef James Stapley will also give a cooking demonstration, showing how to recreate some of the flavours on your plate. Florence’s Foodstore will also hold a three-course “provincial dinner” matched with a selection of wines from provincial wineries as well as canapes before the meal. Rippon is holding a number of events including a birthday open day to celebrate Rippon’s 33rd year and “Down to Earth” tours where guests get a walking tour of the vineyard, wine tastings, and platters on the terrace at Rippon Vineyard to finish. These are just a few of the events to be held, and more are to be announced. For tickets and more information, visit downtoearthwinecelebration.co.nz PHOTO: JULIE NICHOLSON

The unsung heroes of winter Naoise Wolsey Wanaka Sun Rocket and Zeffer may love playing in the snow and taking a dip in Lake Wanaka, but they are not your average dogs. As part of Wanaka’s Aspiring Avalanche Dogs rescue team, they are the unsung heroes of winter. Along with their handlers, Matt Gunn and Callum Grant, they are always ready to spring into action and head up the mountain to search for anyone who may be buried under the snow. The canine duo are featured in a new book, A Dog’s Life, by Craig Bullock, which reveals the important work these dogs do in the community and the hard work that goes into training them. Matt, the founder of Aspiring Avalanche Dogs, handles Rocket, a border/rough-coat collie cross. “We start training the dogs as soon as we get them, from eight weeks old,” explains Matt. “We try to find pups that have certain
character traits, primarily those with a strong play drive and a good friendly nature. “At first the training involves socialisation and desensitisation to particular environments. We introduce a search game when
they’re around six months old and progress from hiding their toy to hiding people along with their toy. Avalanche search dogs are trained to find human scent because they believe their toy is with the person.” Aspiring Avalanche Dogs is a non-profit organisation and currently consists of four volunteer handlers and three dogs – they
are looking for a new dog for one handler. They train together two to three times a week at Treble Cone ski field, however the handlers do a small amount of training every day with their dogs. Winter is their peak season, however the team is active all year round. “We’re volunteers for LandSAR and sometimes get deployed by police. In the past we have been on standby for Mount Cook in summer, but in the winter the demand is much higher,” said Matt. “I created Aspiring Avalanche Dogs to try and ensure there were always two dogs based at Treble Cone as a primary response. Ski-field based teams can be deployed and get to sites very quickly in an emergency.” The Aspiring Avalanche Dogs team is running its annual heli-ski raffle again to help raise much-needed funds. Two heliski days are up for grabs and there will be spot prizes at the draw which will be held in Kai Whakapai on August 21. Tickets are $5 from Racers Edge.
INBRIEF Huntress to come to Hawea Infamous hunter Sabrina Corgatelli is planning to visit Central Otago next April to hunt stags at Glen Dene Station. Corgatelli caused international outrage for boasting about her killing conquests in Africa amid the outcry over the killing of Cecil the lion in Zimbabwe. Wanaka mountain biker to race at championships Wanaka mountain biker Paul Wright, 17, has been selected to compete at the world championships in Andorra next month. Mount Aspiring College band Near Armageddon have one last chance to compete in the grand final of Rockquest 2015. The band was announced as one of Rockquest’s top 30 acts, out of a massive 700 entries, however they weren’t included in the top nine acts which was announced last Friday. But Near Armageddon still have a shot at competing at the grand final in Auckland through the People’s Choice Award. One of the top 30 acts will get through to the final as the People’s Choice winner, selected from the 21 acts who were in the top 30 but not in the top 9. The People’s Choice winner will compete in the national final in Auckland on Friday September 11. Music industry judges who selected the finalists from the top 30 said the standard was incredibly high this year. Spokesman
Damien Daniels said it was really quite intimidating to see such a high level of talent from such young people, and heart-breaking not to let all of them through to the final. “The real standout was the high level of musicianship from people of this age,” he said. “That, and the diversity that there is now in New Zealand music.” In a Facebook post on Near Armageddon’s page on Friday night, the band thanked everyone for their support . “Unfortunately we didn’t make it to the national finals! But we still had an awesome time playing music and being able to reach the top 20 bands! Big thanks to everyone who has helped out and supported along the way,” the post said. Voting for the People’s Choice winner will open next Wednesday (August 12), with the details to be announced on Rockquest’s Facebook page on Tuesday night.

Fan frenzy over Highlanders trophy The Wanaka community showed its support for Super Rugby champions the Highlanders last week by visiting the Night ‘n Day store to catch a glimpse of the team’s winning trophy. The Ardmore Street store was inundated with fans wanting to take a photo with the Super Rugby Trophy, which weighs an impressive 28 kilos. The Night ‘n Day tour was spread over three days across 15 stores in Otago
and Southland. The rugby trophy had previously visited Placemakers in Wanaka on Thursday July 16, when huge crowds also turned out to take a look and show their support. As the Investec Super Rugby competition is changing format next year the teams will be playing for a new trophy, which means, as the last winners of the current competition, the Highlanders will keep the trophy.

Wanaka Sun The daughter of a convicted paedophile has spoken out to warn families in the Upper Clutha region that her father may now be living in Central Otago. The 67-year-old man was sentenced to three years in August 2013 after being found guilty of three charges of indecently dealing with a 10-year-old girl. He was deported from Western Australia to Christchurch in April after 18 months in jail and was believed to be staying with relatives in Waimate. However his daughter Nicki Hide, who is currently living in Perth, told The Wanaka Sun that her father has recently moved to a new town. “My father is definitely no longer living in Waimate. I have been contacted by numerous people advising me that he is now living in Alexandra. He has best friends in Alexandra who support him,” said Nicki. “In my view he is a very real danger to all
children. He is a master manipulator. He has manipulated everybody around him and I can’t stress enough how much of a danger he is to children. I think it’s important for people to know about him and watch out for their kids,” she said. “Under parole conditions in Australia he is not meant to have contact with children, but those conditions mean nothing now that he is in New Zealand.” Nicki has been fighting tirelessly to improve the monitoring of parole conditions for offenders who have been deported from Australia to New Zealand and recently New Zealand and Australia agreed to improve the way both countries share “critical Corrections information” on offenders who are returned to their homeland. “It’s definitely a good thing,” said Nicki. “It’s a step in the right direction but there’s a long way to go before they tackle the problem of the parole and monitoring of convicted criminals. This has shattered our whole world and now I’m just trying to protect as many kids as possible.”
Te Kakano Aotearoa Trust is a notfor-profit community trust which specialises in native plant restoration in the Upper Clutha community. Last year alone, volunteers at Te Kakano planted 2500 plants in the region. The trust, formed seven years ago, links the community with hands-on land care, and volunteers range from children to the elderly. “The whole vision is to plant and promote the land that may have been degraded a little bit, and to get the community involved,” said Chairperson Stu Thorne. This year the trust aims to provide at least another 2500 plants back into the community and run over 100 nursery sessions, where locals and visitors alike are taught about propagation, cultivation, planting and nurturing techniques. Te Kakano is also looking to see how it can help Cromwell get a nursery for a similar initiative. “We’ve certainly got enough projects to keep us busy for the next few years,” said Stu. “We work closely

with the Department of Conservation and the council for any planting areas they have. Our focus is planting on public land.” While Te Kakano was lucky enough to receive some substantial funding when it began, its continuation depends on donations. It costs around $15,000 per year to keep the doors open, to cover expenses including compost, fertiliser, tools, irrigation and trust expenses. Not only does the trust provide native plants for the public to enjoy, it also creates a sense of community and people find the volunteering very rewarding, Stu said. “We really see that a lot of people come back week after week. They enjoy doing what they’re doing, and they can visually see their progress. It’s really encouraging.” If you would like to donate to Te Kakano to help ensure its future here in Wanaka, please visit Te Kakano’s Givealittle page online. Royal Society talk about the secrets of Angkor Professor Charles Higham of Otago University will give a talk this Friday called The Civilisation of Angkor. It was in the late 16th century that Portuguese missionaries discovered Angkor, the largest pre-industrial city in the world, in the jungles of Northern Cambodia. Since then, uncovering the secrets of Angkor has attracted the attention of the world’s scholars. Professor Higham has been awarded countless honours for his work in Cambodia and Southeast Asia. The talk will be at the Presbyterian Community Centre this Friday (August 7) at 6pm. Admission is $5.
A step backwards Kim Reilly Council bureaucracy has been taken to a whole new level with Otago Regional Council’s 154-page proposed Regional Policy Statement (RPS). At a time when other councils are focusing on finding ways to streamline consenting processes and minimise red-tape, in Otago the stage has been set for a giant step backwards. An RPS is an important document, and it’s critical that regional councils get the content right. These documents provide an overview of the issues facing a region. They set out the policies and methods councils must take to achieve integrated management of their natural and physical resources. While an RPS doesn’t directly control what you can and can’t do via rules, both city and district councils must give effect to the RPS provisions within their own resource management plans. This means that what is laid out by ORC in its RPS now, will have on-going repercussions in the planning documents of Otago’s district councils over the next ten years. What is alarming for stakeholders involved from early consultation on the RPS, is the about-face in the way Council has approached the process. During the consultation phase, Council indicated that their vision was for a ‘20 or so page high level’ enabling document (along the lines of what has just been released by the West Coast Regional Council). Unfortunately the succinct progressive document originally discussed is no more. Instead the region is facing a highly directive, complicated and detail-heavy document. A key risk with this type of
A monthly column by Kim Reilly of Federated Farmers, on issues affecting the Upper Clutha’s rural community… approach is that the aims and objectives get ‘lost in translation’. One of Federated Farmers primary concerns is that Otago’s proposed RPS doesn’t appropriately recognise the economic and social contribution that resource use and resource users make to Otago’s wellbeing. In our view, the RPS unnecessarily cuts across the interests of resource users, with the potential for significant consenting and compliance costs and delays. The Resource Management Act 1991 (the Act) is all about sustainable management and consideration of the four wellbeings – environmental, social, economic and cultural. We do not feel this has properly been represented in the RPS. We’re also concerned with the way the RPS attempts to develop ‘one size fits all’ solutions for all of the different districts in Otago. Queenstown is facing different challenges to Clutha, and the RPS needs to let the District and City councils handle these different challenges locally. With Queenstown Lakes District, Central Otago District and Dunedin City Councils all in the process of reviewing their own district plans, now is the time for ORC to produce a sound and sensible RPS that meets the needs of our region. It was made very clear at the recent Local Government New Zealand conference held in Rotorua, that the Government is losing patience with councils putting out RMA plans and documents that are inefficient and ineffective. Hopefully ORC can turn the ship around through the remainder of this RPS process.

Hannah McNabb Ten very brave MAC students shaved for a cure for leukaemia and blood cancer on Monday. The ponytail cuts and full head shaves were undertaken by friends and finished off professionally by Jacob from Ali Baba's. Hair longer than 30 centimetres was donated for wig making. Students involved were Jordyn McDonald, Ben Harrington, Kenzi Robinson, Hannah McNabb, Amy Jolly, Nick Mercer, Ben Fussell, Olly Thomas, Kai Richards and Riley Christie. The funds raised by students and proceeds from Wednesday's mufti day will help fund core services such as patient support and research. Six Kiwis
daily are diagnosed with blood cancer or a related condition. Anyone wishing to donate to Shave for Cure can go to the official website www.shaveforacure. co.nz. Messages of support and donations to students who shaved on Monday can be made on the website under individual students. Cash donations can also be dropped off to the Mt Aspiring College Office. Many thanks to those that have supported this cause and especially to Jacob from Ali Baba's (who came on his day off to shave) and Mr Sloan who took the photos.
Well, I think I’m writing this update a little concussed. We decided to ski the Merino Muster 7km trail this week - which we did, but with a few injuries to come home with. Having not worked on any real downhill stuff yet, this was a real eye-opener for me and my two comrades-in-arms, Julie Asher and Ilse Erasmus plus Coach Andy. Conditions were perfect - what could go wrong? Ha! The downhill... That’s what can go wrong. Never have I been so pleased to see a hill to climb UP! I warn you now, when learning to snowplough cross country, it is nothing like the snow plough for Alpine skiing (which enables you to STOP). Unfortunately this was terrifying for me as I had very little control over what my knee was trying ever so hard to do for me (control my speed) and with that I landed that hard on my tailbone, back, neck, then head - I’m sure even the passersby saw stars circling around my head - and this was just the beginning of the course. After I gathered myself (and my
pride) and put my “big girl panties” on we continued the rest of the course which was relatively injury free. My gliding was much improved from the first day on the skis and I started to really enjoy the experience. It was also nice to have a couple of friends there for support and laughter! I gathered up my confidence and was able to cruise down the not-so-terrifying hills quite nicely. I came up with the theory that if I just went for it downhill, I could deal with the consequences at the end. Not a great plan! As we rounded the final bend into the last 2km (the Highland Trail) we realised time had flown and we must head back down the hill for school pick up. I have realised downhill is NOT my forte, and may have caused me severe bruising, so we shall work on that next time. One week to go until the Merino Muster!! Eeekkkk, I’d better learn fast. Thanks again Penberthy Insurance and Coach Andy.

Capturing stormy weather on camera When the weather gets rough it is tempting to keep our camera tucked away and look for other activities to pursue. This, however, could be a missed opportunity as stormy weather can create the most striking and startling images as it captures nature at its most dramatic. The drama in the light as the sky begins to close or open, with shafts of sunlight and dramatic clouds, gives the opportunity to create pictures with texture and dimension that provoke awe in the viewer. It is important that we identify what it is that ‘grabs’ us, and then determine how we are going to turn this into a final image. A major factor in a strong image is composition and strong composition often begins with lines which don’t necessarily have to be straight. The eye likes to be directed by bold shapes and form, often called lead-in lines. We should always ask: where are they leading to? A dynamic landscape with lead-in lines needs a focal point that captures and holds the viewers’ attention. Great landscape photographers can often transform the ordinary into the amazingly beautiful by creating a harmonious and balanced scene, achieved by training the eye to identify interesting subject matter and then refining composition. For stormy weather a wide angle lens (typically 16-24mm) gives more sky cover, and has a wider depth of focus. By contrast a telephoto lens can be useful for distant storms as it compresses and flattens the image just like binoculars do. On a digital camera an ISO of 100 is an ideal setting to
maximise quality. An aperture of f5.6 and f11 will give reasonable depth of focus and when used with a wide angle lens can sweep the eye from an interesting foreground to distant clouds, giving a sense of huge dynamics. Shooting in Raw mode (or Raw + JPG) can be an advantage as it gives greater flexibility to tweak exposure in postproduction editing. Allan Ford’s image ‘Storm Approaching’ (pictured) is a great example of how to take striking pictures of stormy weather. Allan was heading towards Christchurch early one morning in late March when in Mackenzie country, close to Tekapo, he saw the blue sky beginning to give way to stormy clouds, creating the most incredible light. He immediately stopped his car and took the photo from the side of the road using a Nikon D80 camera, hand-held, with a telephoto lens set at 55mm, an aperture of ft3.5, a shutter speed of 1/125th sec and an ISO of 100. Allan cropped the image slightly in post-production editing to give a panoramic composition that worked well with this picture. Wanaka Camera Club is dedicated to help improve the photographic skills of anyone interested in photography. We welcome anyone to join us, irrespective of photographic ability - if you know nothing about photography we will teach you. Come and see what we can do for you. Our next meeting is on Monday 10th August at the St John’s Rooms, Link Way. See you there.

Public Health South has been notified of over 80 possible cases of whooping cough in Wanaka and Hawea. Out of the six cases that have been confirmed, five are in unvaccinated people, and the health board has urged anyone who has not received a vaccine to do so as soon as possible. People in this region have strong views on whether we should or shouldn’t vaccinate, but we all owe it to our families and communities to research the facts and come to the right decision. Whooping cough is highly contagious and one of the most infectious vaccine-preventable diseases. It is a serious disease particularly in young infants not old enough to be vaccinated. Prior to the vaccine, whooping cough was a major cause of infant death. There are two types of vaccines to combat whooping cough - a whole cell vaccine and a newer version called an acellular vaccine. The new version was developed to minimise side-effects from vaccination. It is 85% effective against preventing whooping cough - meaning that 85% of all whooping cough cases can be prevented by this vaccine. The vaccines do have side effects, however in all the clinical trials of both types of vaccine, no child died of infection. The new vaccine was also less likely to lead to drowsiness, irritability, prolonged crying or vomiting. Another consequence of not using the vaccine and potentially getting whooping cough is the use of antibiotics - which have their own side effects including nausea and vomiting as well as the development of antibiotic resistance in children, their families and the wider community. Whooping cough is a serious and horrible illness and the benefits of the vaccine far outweigh the risks. We wish anyone who has been infected a speedy recovery.

by Constable Mike Thomas We continue to see good numbers of visitors in town with many Australians visiting Wanaka to enjoy our ski resorts. The bars are busy and we ask locals and visitors to keep an eye on coats/jackets and valuables, especially smart-phones (Just to clarify, I’m not pointing the finger at the Aussies!). It was a pretty standard winter week for police. Here is a snapshot of what we’ve been dealing with… Last Saturday night, around 10pm a stone was thrown through the front window of a house on Capell Ave, Lake Hawea, while the owner was home. Not only is the owner left with a bill for a window but you get a fright when this sort of thing happens. We would like to have a chat to the individual/s responsible for this so if you have any information please let us know. A set of skis was reported stolen from Cardrona ski area on Friday. Although we all have great trust in our fellow skiers/riders on the hill, there are some amongst us who will take advantage of that so keep an eye on your gear. We attended another preventable crash at the corner of Helwick and Brownston St last Thursday. Brownston St has its fair share of low speed crashes so take note of the signage around its entry streets and please stop if it says stop, it’s not a give way. A small fire was reported in the toilets at Domini Park (off Kings Drive) last Wednesday. If anyone has seen something suspicious or has any information please contact police on 4437272. Also last Wednesday we attended a rollover by a 4x4 on the Crown range. Luckily no major injuries resulted. Even though the road was clear of snow drivers need to be aware of other conditions such as gravel and their position on the road. Enjoy the warmer weather (can I say that yet?) and have a safe week.

Wanaka athletes clean up at Peak to Peak
Staff Reporter Wanaka Sun Wanaka’s Hamish Fleming (pictured) and Joanna Williams took out the Peak to Peak multisport event in Queenstown at the weekend. Over 450 athletes tackled the 22nd annual event, the longestrunning winter multi-sport event in the country. The 44km race starts on the top of the Remarkables, followed by a 17km mountain bike ride down the Remarkables access road. The competitors then paddle 7kms on Lake Wakatipu to Queenstown, run 9kms to Arthurs Point and cycle 9kms up to the Coronet Peak base building to finish on the snow. The battle at the front of the field was between the second

and third fastest athletes from last year. Fleming, who finished third last year, improved to first with a time of 2hrs, 15mins and 15secs. He had a non-stop battle with Flavio Vianna (Christchurch), who once again finished second with a time of 2hrs, 18 mins and 25 secs. “I knew that the defending champion, Dougal Allen, was offshore and saw this as my chance to join the prestigious list of athletes who have claimed the title in this race. I was forced to work hard for the win by Flavio, and was not sure of the win until the final stretch on the Coronet Peak road.” In the women’s field, Williams defended her title for the fourth time, after winning in 2009, 2012
and 2014 – this year in a time of 2hrs, 43mins and 15secs. Second place went to Fiona Dowling (Alexandra) in 2hrs, 46mins and 55secs, with Natalie Jakobs (Queenstown) coming in third. A strong school teams field of 12 entered this year, the win going to ‘Dislexic Moments’ Dunstan High School team (Alexandra) in a time of 2hours, 25mins and 25secs. A second Dunstan School team ‘Wii not Fit’ came in second by only 30secs, in a time of 2hrs, 25mins and 53secs, with Wakatipu High (Queenstown) 3rd in 2hrs, 31mins and 30secs. Mike Greer ‘Randoms’ (Wanaka) won the women’s team section in 2hrs, 42mins and 34 seconds.
