Wanaka’s own Jody Direen has won Female Artist of the Year at the New Zealand Country Music Awards. Jody was also recently signed by major record label, ABC Music Australia, which will release her album internationally on August 21. “It has been an amazing couple of weeks and receiving this award tops it off brilliantly,” Jody said of her win. “I am overwhelmed with excitement and so thankful to all my supporters.”

riticism of the Upper Clutha Hospice Trust on Facebook has upset trustees and caused confusion in the community, according to trust chair Russell McGeorge. Wanaka resident Hannah Faed posted on the Upper Clutha Community Noticeboard page saying the trust’s proposed facility in the Aspiring Retirement Village would not be a hospice, but merely “respite care beds” which only “the rich” could afford. Russell said the facility will be available free of charge to all residents of the Upper Clutha who have a terminal illness. He said the trust is calling the facility a palliative and respite care

suite, and has never claimed it would be a fully-serviced hospice. The Otago Community Hospice (OCH) already provides hospice care in people’s own homes in Wanaka and throughout Otago, and at its hospice in Dunedin. The Upper Clutha Hospice Trust’s palliative and respite care facility will be available for use by patients of the OCH, who choose or need to use the facility rather than stay at home. “We have been working with the Otago Community Hospice from the start,” Russell said. “They will [continue to] send staff up here, and we’ll provide a facility that patients can use.” Otago Community Hospice Chief Executive Officer, Ginny Green, said there had been some confusion in the community about who
provides what care. “We want to reassure the Upper Clutha community that we are committed to working alongside the Trust (and Presbyterian Support) to ensure the whole community receives the palliative and hospice care it requires. [Otago Community] Hospice provides specialist palliative care and support to patients and families and this will not change. Most hospice care is delivered in the community but sometimes a patient may need a stay in a ‘palliative care bed’. It is preferable for that patient to be as close to home as possible so the development of this palliative care unit [in Wanaka] will be a great asset. On the rare occasion that a patient has very complex symptoms to be managed, they may require an admission to Dunstan

One of the men charged with an attack against local man Kahu Vincent on May 9 has admitted his role in the incident. Leon Terence Rowles pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Rowles was discharged on the four other charges he faced – attempted murder, assault with intent and two counts of theft. He was remanded in custody and will appear for sentence in the High Court in Invercargill on August 26. Kahu was seriously injured in the attack which occurred at the Ardmore Street Night N’ Day store. After ten weeks in hospital Kahu was finally able to return home in late July. Partner Jade Makuru told The Wanaka Sun the family did not wish to focus their energy on the court case. “We’re just relying on the justice system to do the right thing… It can be frustrating sometimes but Kahu doesn’t want to concentrate on them at all.”

Hospital or to Hospice’s specialist inpatient unit in Dunedin”, she said. The Upper Clutha Hospice Trust’s palliative and respite care facility will initially include one patient’s room and an adjoining family room in the proposed hospital for the elderly, now called Aspiring Enliven, which is being built at the Aspiring Retirement Village. Aspiring Enliven will be run by Presbyterian Support Otago. Construction will begin next month and should be completed by June next year. The Upper Clutha Hospice Trust was formed in May 2013. Trustees and supporters have been fundraising since that time, with huge community support, including a very successful second-hand shop in Ballantyne Road.

Expert warns of potential whooping cough epidemic
Finding a hidden geocache in a secret location near Wanaka are (from left) McKay Heath (5), Hannah McKay (13), Toni McKay (10) and Hunter Heath (7).

Dig up some buried treasure There’s buried treasure all over Wanaka and all you need is a phone with GPS to find it. This Saturday is International Geocaching Day and people worldwide will be celebrating the global phenomenon of geocaching – a mix between orienteering and treasure hunting. The geocaching community has concealed ‘caches’ in hidden locations around the world and uploaded their co-ordinates to www.geocaching. com. People can try to find the caches aided only by those co-ordinates and a GPS enabled device, a
hint and a bit of luck. There are 51 geocaches hidden around the Wanaka region waiting to be found. Caches can be hidden anywhere – in woods, your local park, at the end of a long hike, on the side of a city street or even on a mountain top. The only rules are, if you take something from the cache you must leave something else behind for the cache, and you must write about your visit in the logbook. Register at www.geocaching.com for more information on how to start geocaching.
The recent outbreak of whooping cough (pertussis) could be the start of a new epidemic as the disease spreads through the Otago region, according to the author of a University of Auckland study into whooping cough. Dr Kathryn Philipson said whooping cough epidemics occur in three to five-year cycles and parents need to be vigilant when it comes to protecting their children, not just in infancy, but during their school years also. “We know these epidemics come in cycles and in the South Island it is four years since the last one.” In just over a week there have been more than 100 cases of suspected whooping cough reported to the Southern District Health Board. Twentythree people in Wanaka and Hawea have been diagnosed with the illness. “During epidemics it generally takes a while to move around the country, so people can be more affected in Otago right now, but in three or six months it could be in Hawke’s Bay or Auckland,” said Dr Philipson. Diagnosis of pertussis, Dr Philipson said, is always a challenge as it must be distinguished from other cough illnesses. “In winter time there are simply more cough illnesses and people may think it is not unusual to have a cough if they believe they have had the flu, for example,” says Dr Philipson. She says this presents a significant risk to the most vulnerable members of society - infants who are under the age at which immunisations can be administered. “Any cough that lasts over two weeks could be pertussis, but if you or your child has been in contact with someone who has been diagnosed with whooping cough it’s important to get to a GP as soon as possible too as antibiotics can be administered early in the illness,” she says. On-time immunisation, with a whooping-cough vaccine at six weeks, three months and five months of age is necessary to protect infants against whooping cough. Four and eleven-year-olds also need to receive their boosters on time. Along with the cost to a child or person’s health, there is a huge social burden for the families affected by the disease, she says. “I’ve seen mums and dads up half the night for three months. It affects their work, their marriage, their kids - it’s not insignificant at all,” she says. Dr Philipson said all families and close friends of those with a young baby should discuss immunisation with their doctor. Relatives and friends should also be advised not to visit if they have a cough or cold.
Skier killed in avalanche Sydney man Roger Greville (58), originally from New Zealand, died after being pulled from avalanche debris during a heli-ski trip with Southern Lakes Heliski on Monday. Greville, an experienced skier, was one of a party of five in the guided trip near Queenstown. At 2.38pm a Southern Lakes Heliski pilot called the company’s operations team to say a group of skiers had been involved in an avalanche. Emergency response procedures were immediately activated, and at 2.48pm it was confirmed Greville, the only skier to be buried in the avalanche, had been located. Despite the efforts of guides and paramedics, Greville was pronounced dead at the scene. The exact cause of death has not yet been confirmed, and has been referred to the coroner. Southern Lakes Heliski suspended operations yesterday following the accident. It was the first incident of its kind in the company’s 30 years of operation, director Julian Field said. The company’s thoughts remained with family and friends of the deceased, he said. The snow pack was relatively stable at the time of the avalanche, and the accident is a tragic example of the inherent risk that does exist with snow sports, especially in the back country. “There is no such thing as no avalanche danger when you’re dealing with snow,” Alpine Cliff Rescue team co-leader, Chris Prudden, said.

Make your voice heard at car parking forum Maddy Harker Wanaka Sun Members of the public who wish to be involved in a discussion about public car parking are invited to attend a public forum on August 20. Hosted by the Wanaka Community Board, the forum will be a chance to learn more about the issues surrounding car parking in Wanaka and make suggestions for solutions. The board will discuss the results of the latest Queenstown Lakes District Council car park survey, what the different usergroup demands are and how many parks we have at different time limit regimes. The board will also present a proposal for a long-term integrated rollout of changes to car park management. Chairperson Rachel Brown told The Wanaka Sun last month the board was considering imposing time restrictions on two popular long-term car parks, on Dunmore Street (beside Pembroke Park) and
Brownston Street. Queenstown Lakes District Council Infrastructure Principal Planner Denis Mander said at the time there would be an element of consultation between the council and the Wanaka Community Board, but “these things need to be decided on by the community board”. The article, posted on The Wanaka Sun Facebook page, received many comments. Suggestions included increasing the size of the Dunmore Street car park to make it in line with the skate park, while many comments criticised the suggestion Wanaka residents should accept parking further out of town and walking to work in the CBD. People at the forum will be encouraged to give their opinions about car parking issues, so residents with strong views are encouraged to attend. The Wanaka Community Board public forum on car parking will be held from 5.30-7pm on Thursday August 20, in the Faulks Room at the Lake Wanaka Centre.
Missing Rodney Murdoch has close ties to Hawea to contact police immediately if they think they see him. Hawea holds “significant meaning” to Murdoch. Murdoch is believed to be driving a green/ silver 1994 Toyota Hilux Surf, registration number CHW194 and is thought to have his grey and white giant schnauzer dog with him. Search and rescue crews and volunteers have spent about 480 hours scouring a large part of the South Island looking for Mr Murdoch since he went missing last week.

Last Saturday 20 Te Kakano Aotearoa volunteers planted 105 trees at Diamond Lake, including 35 kahikatea and 15 mighty matai. Conditions were cold and the lake refrozen but spirits were high. Diamond Lake is being revegetated with native plants, thanks to a donation from the Otago Community Trust. The Trust donated $7500 to the Te Kakano
Aotearoa Trust towards raising and planting 1200 native plants on land near the picturesque Diamond Lake reserve, in conjunction with pest control work. The lake, situated near the mouth of the Matukituki River, is a popular scenic walk. Te Kakano regularly undertakes revegetation projects in the Wanaka area, the aim being to create a native corridor around the lake.

Wanaka Alcohol Group to tackle drinking culture Maddy Harker Wanaka Sun Upper Clutha community groups, schools, and agencies have come together as the Wanaka Alcohol Group (WAG) to ensure an ongoing conversation about alcohol and other drugs – in particular helping youths and families make healthy choices. The group, set up in July 2013, was inspired by the 15-year-old Iceland Project which has seen dramatic changes in the alcohol and drug use of teenagers in that country. Over the course of the Iceland Project, alcohol use fell dramatically and daily smoking among 15 and 16-yearolds fell from 23 percent to 3 percent. Although it is early days for the group, WAG member Marie Roxburgh said the attitude towards drinking amongst youth was starting to change here in

Wanaka. “There’s been a small change, definitely,” Marie said. “But the problem exists because of access to alcohol. Unfortunately it is readily available.” Community leaders and individuals, however, have been very active in wanting to make change. “What’s great about the Wanaka community is people are really committed to forming a healthy drinking culture here. It’s a community-in-action feeling.” Last year Wanaka Alcohol Group held three “On the Same Wavelength” speaker series, which included Nathan Mikaere Wallis talking about teenage brain development, James Beck providing a roadmap to adolescence and Lotta Dann discussing her life as a hidden alcoholic. Each of the talks so far have attracted
crowds of approximately 130-140 people, Marie said. “The community is really on board and we’ve always had a really good turnout in Wanaka.” On August 26, the fourth speaker in the series will give a talk in Wanaka. Ben Birks Ang is a social worker and leader in the development of community youthcentred alcohol and drug programmes. In the talk Ben will help parents, educators and community leaders build resilience in our families, schools and community. Ben came highly recommended after success in Mosgiel last year. “He’s known to be excellent in motivating the community,” Marie said. The talk will be held at the Lake Wanaka Centre on August 26, at 7pm. Gold coin entry.

The Informant This month I would like to talk about something I strike on a frequent basis. It relates to when a client is having a good trading year and they are looking for ways to reduce the impact of tax. More often than not our job is about education and understanding situations such as this. As we all know the more you earn the more income tax you pay. The amount of income tax depends on your level of income and rises progressively as your income rises. For example if your income is $14,000 or less you pay 10.5%. Income above $14,000 but less $48,000 pays tax at 17.5%. For levels $48,000 through to $70,000 the tax rate is 30% and anything above $70,000 is taxed at 33% being the highest possible tax rate. These rates apply to individuals. Companies and trusts have flat tax rates of 28% and 33% respectively. Unlike individuals companies and trusts have no threshold levels determining what the tax rate will be. It is all taxed at the same rate. If someone is facing a tax bill and knowing this before the end of the year I often hear them say “if I buy a new vehicle that will solve the problem as I can write it off my tax”. There is nothing wrong with
PAGE 4
buying a new vehicle but you have to do it for the right reasons. If we analyse the difference between the following two scenarios it is interesting to see how things end up. Scenario 1) the client buys a new vehicle for $30,000 to save themselves tax and under scenario 2) keeps the money they earned and pays tax on the $30,000. Under scenario 2 you keep the $30,000 you have made in the bank and pay the tax (assuming at 33%) which will leave you with $20,100 ($30,000 less $9,900 tax). Scenario 1 has the following outcome. You spend $30,000 on the vehicle. So far your cash position is down by $30,000 but we still need to factor in what tax savings you will make by purchasing the vehicle. For large items that cost more than $500 such as the motor vehicle you can only claim a portion of the vehicle cost each year. This portion is known as depreciation. Depreciation on a vehicle is 30% so for a 12 month period there is $9,000 that you can reduce off your income. Assuming a tax rate here of 33%. So in year one the tax saving on $9,000 of depreciation is $2,970. The outcome for scenario 1
results in a net cost of $27,030 ($30,000 less $2,970). Spending $30,000 on a new vehicle only saved you $2,970 of tax. My view on this vehicle purchase decision is that unless you really need to purchase that new vehicle it makes no sense to spend money, particularly if it is a discretionary spend item. By earning a dollar of income the most you will pay in tax is 33 cents. You still end up with 67 cents of that dollar left over. This is a better outcome than spending money to try save yourself a tax bill. For some people bringing forward expenditure so that it falls before your balance date is a good option to reduce tax but in general only should be done if necessary. Obviously there are things that can be done to legitimately reduce your tax bill and this is one of them. We also work with clients to optimise the tax benefits you can get from the different tax rates between companies, trust and individuals.

Show some heart this August Naoise Wolsey Wanaka Sun Wanaka’s Cate Davis is passionate about helping children born with heart defects. As chairperson of Heart Kids Central Otago, she currently helps the charity to support about 18 families in the region. Cate knows exactly what these families are going through, as she was born with a major heart defect. “I was born with a hole in my heart. It’s known as a Tetralogy of Fallot, and a damaged valve,” Cate told The Wanaka Sun. “I had an operation in 1971, when I was four and a half, at Greenlane Hospital in Auckland, which was a success. I later suffered some hearing loss and had to have surgery on my leg and jaw, which all stemmed from the heart defect.” It was a tough time for Cate’s parents, who were farmers in South Otago and had an older child to look after while Cate had to travel to Auckland for surgery. Cate knew her journey would have been different if Heart Kids had existed back then to provide
the support her family needed during her heart journey. “We help with things like extra flights, because families still have to fly to Greenlane in Auckland for child heart surgery. We provide welcome packs for children, cell phone top-ups, supermarket vouchers and help with accommodation. We give as much support as we can, whether it’s financial or just being a listening ear.” This month, Heart Kids is asking people to donate generously to help provide support for the 12 Kiwis born with heart defects every week. Last Friday a street collection was held outside New World in Wanaka to raise money for the charity. “I’d like to thank the people of Central Otago for their generosity and support,” said Cate. “We had two raffles on the day and the winners were Linda Stevens, who won a toy hamper, and Jodie [last name unknown], who won a food hamper. A $3 donation can be made to Heart Kids by texting HEART to 2427.
More care for Kea
Local kea should be better cared for following a public meeting held in Wanaka last week. Kea ConservationTrust chair Tamsin Orr-Walker was here talking about “Building a Future with Kea”. The meeting was held in conjunction with the Department of Conservation and about 30 people attended. “A number of people put their names down to get involved in education and advocacy, sightings monitoring and pest control work,” Tamsin said. “We will put together a plan which identifies the specific issues which threaten local kea populations - for example lead poisoning, predation, lack of local information on kea, and conflict - and a method for project initiation (including identifica-

tion of funding and in-kind support). “We see this as a new way forward for kea conservation, where local communities are fully engaged. Projects could include education and awareness in local schools and at tourist venues (such as ski fields), monitoring and tracking of local kea, removing lead from the local area, setting up pest control around nest sites, and coordinating local groups.” Tamsin said many of the people who attended were already involved in other conservation initiatives so it would be relatively easy to include kea projects in some of their work Tamsin said support by local communities is needed if kea are to survive.

Sue Bartlett (pictured) moved to Wanaka in February this year, and she’s loving it. “I drive to work and think ‘how can you have a bad day when you have this view,’” she said. Since relocating, Sue’s channelled her infectious positive energy in a way to help people get their mojo back. Sue has set up a workshop with all things arts and crafts, designed to be a creative space where people can come for company, relaxation, and to get creative. “Mojo Back is a safe haven, a place to share the company of other women or people. Years ago people got together and quilted. We don’t spend as much time with each other as we used to,” she said. Sue has many projects planned, and one of her innovative plans already on the go is grace quilting. “When someone passes away some items you can easily dispose of, but other items are hard to let go of. I’ll help them work up a fabric object with the clothes. It could be anything from a cushion to
a quilt.” “The end product could be something very small, but it can mean a lot. Clothes have stories,” Sue said. “It’s also a way of starting conversations. Having a project gives people a chance to talk.” People can also make grace quilts for other reasons too. “It could be anything from making a quilt for someone in hospice or with an illness, or it could be to celebrate a 21st, a marriage or a christening.” Sue and her husband moved down here in February this year, after a busy corporate career in Auckland. “My art was more of a weekend thing in Auckland. I worked long hours, the typical city life.” She’s passionate about bringing people together and creating a sense of community, and that’s one of the underlying values for Mojo Back. “People are so busy, and they can often feel like they don’t have anyone to talk to. Mojo Back is a calming place.” “I’m still busy down here,” Sue said, “but it’s a different kind of busy.”
Layering jewellery is key - I rarely wear only one necklace. Don’t look past your accessories for that final touch to complete your look. It’s time to wear your necklaces randomly and get creative with your jewellery box. If your neckline is exposed, go for a graduated effect - delicate shorter necklaces paired with slightly chunkier, longer necklaces. Keep jewellery worn in uneven numbers - it’s more interesting to the eye. For a collar effect, layer chunky necklaces that rest right on top of each other. Wear these over a buttoned-up blouse, or a top with a round neckline. The look is bold, eye catching, edgy and glamorous. For chain necklaces, look for alternative materials, oversized links and colours. Crystals, gemstones, coins, feathers and letters, paired together, give an instant bohemian
feel and are interesting to look at. Wear these items with a patterned top or dress to finish your bohemian look. If you prefer no-fuss designs, trying mixing various simple chains. Gold is hugely on-trend right now. The colour will look great with a simple tailored dress and a plunging neckline. It’s best to keep the metals matching. Look out for chokers of various kinds this spring/summer - fitted, slightly loose, beaded, textured or leather. Chokers look wonderful tiered with a necklace and pendant as well! Explore your inner “retro” with the continuing ‘70s trend. Try large, long, loose necklaces made of earthy fabrics and tribal tones for a rustic appearance. Ultimately, it’s about mixing and matching until you get the combination you like most. For pictures of inspiration visit my blog at www.trudiemillar.com
Artists passionate about environment Maddy Harker Wanaka Sun Environmental artist Martin Hill and his partner Philippa Jones have made a career from their sculptures made in nature which Hill photographs. The sculptures are made from nature, and return to nature, with his photos the only evidence that they existed. It’s a deceptively simple idea that pushes a much deeper message. Hill and Jones are passionate about the environment and ecological sustainability and this passion has taken them around the world, including to Scott Base with Antarctica NZ. Tomorrow (August 14) will be a unique opportunity for members of the public to view Martin and Philippa’s work and hear about the philosophy behind their art at a free audio-visual
talk at the Wanaka Presbyterian Community Centre at 10am. “This 45 minute talk is created as an overview of the art practice since we started 20 years ago and includes video. It articulates the meaning behind the imagery,” Martin said. Martin and Philippa, who live in Wanaka, have been selected to exhibit at the first Land Art Biennale in Andorra in September. With their exhibition titled “Beyond:the Watershed”, 27 large scale prints will be shown outdoors in the heart of the city of Andorra la Vella. Martin will be giving the same talk at the biennale, as well as in Beijing where they are exhibiting, so we are lucky to have a preview of it right here in Wanaka. It’s that time again when the world’s best winter sports athletes head to the Southern Alps for the biennial Audi quattro Winter Games NZ. As always, this year’s Games feature the first FIS (International Ski Federation) World Cups of the season up at Cardrona – slopestyle and halfpipe for both snowboard and freeskiing. There’s an action-packed final on each Saturday and Sunday of the Games. The final ‘Super Sunday’ also includes the spectacular freeski and snowboard Big Air comps as well as the gala closing ceremony. Stars on show include Sochi Winter Olympic gold medallists Joss Christensen (USA) and Iouri ‘iPod’ Podladtchikov (SUI) plus our own home-grown heroes Janina Kuzma, currently ranked second in the world in freeski halfpipe, the amazing Wells brothers, Jossi, Byron, Beau-James and Jackson, and snowboard sensation Christy Prior. Cross-country racing takes place up at Snow Farm NZ and why not plan a trip across to Naseby for the Games’ elite curling tournament? This year, the focus is on mixed doubles – just announced as a new Olympic event for 2018 – with the New Zealand team hoping to do well against some of the world’s best. All on-mountain sports events are free to watch. Of course, you’ll need a lift pass if you want to ski or snowboard too! Pick up one of the special Winter Games NZ trail maps at Cardrona to find out where to go. ADVERTORIAL

Entertainment on the lakefront This year the Wanaka Games Village is moving down to the lakefront. The purpose-built hub will be going up this Sunday just off Ardmore Street near the skate park. The Village will be open from 3pm till late every day of the Games for an exciting programme of après ski entertainment including live bands and DJs, medal ceremonies and the adrenalin-packed Adventure Film Festival presented by GoPro. And the best thing is, it’s all free to watch! Highlights include local bands Pistol Knights, Cemetery Road and Ghetto Blaster plus DJs Chris J, C:She, Unaboydable and Tom the Don. And, after the closing ceremony up at Cardrona on Sunday August 30, the action returns to the Wanaka Games Village one last time for the JUCY Meltdown Concert featuring Kora, one of New Zealand’s most powerful live bands, supported by rising local stars Arma Del Amor. Like all events at the Village, entry to this final concert is free but you will need a ticket to get in. Tickets will be available via the Games website from midday on Sunday August 23 so get in quick!
The Adventure Film Festival presented by GoPro runs from 8.30-10pm between 24 and 29 August. Some of the amazing action films being screened include the visually breathtaking mountain bike feature ‘unReal’ and ski movies ‘Days of My Youth’ and ‘Almost Ablaze’, described as a global odyssey combining state-of-the-art cinematography and the most progressive riding in the world. The Games Village isn’t only a great place to catch up with friends. You’ll also be able to meet some of the elite athletes competing at this year’s Games. Medal ceremonies for both freeski FIS World Cups and the snowboard slopestyle all take place downtown, so expect to see a few Winter Olympic and X Games stars milling around! Fully licensed, the Village bar offers Corona beer, 42 Below vodka, Tora Bay wines, hot mulled Isaac’s Cider, Red Bull and a range of other hot and cold beverages. Local food stalls will be providing delicious hot food to help you refuel. Visit the Games website wintergamesnz.kiwi for a full schedule of what’s on when, or see the programme in next week’s Wanaka Sun.

The Pembroke Swill Wine highlights by John Hallum The All Blacks could do no better than look to former hard-nosed All Black prop John Ashworth for inspiration as they prepare for what will now be a huge game at Eden Park on Saturday. Ashworth used to pack-down with Gary Knight and Andy Dalton, as one third of what was a fearsome and uncompromising front-row. The image of the trio muddied, battle-wearied and sucking in oxygen now forms some of the marketing material for the bottles of wine Ashworth and his son produce from their vineyard, Junction Road. Junction Road
is located in Waipukerau, in southern Hawkes Bay. The climate is quite different to Napier and, as such, the wines from Junction Road have their own distinct character. Junction Road Possession Pinot Noir 2011 Hawke’s Bay, $35 Rich, full bodied wine with intense flavours of red berry, dark plum and earthy notes. Well integrated spice and oak gives the wine great complexity. The pinot is a great food match for enhancing gamey flavours. Perfect with venison, duck or while watching the Wallabies wilt in the Eden Park pressure cooker. A ‘big match’ wine for a big match occasion. ADVERTORIAL

The New Economics Foundation conducted a review of the most upto-date evidence and found building these five actions into day-to-day life is important for the wellbeing of individuals, families, communities and organisations. You can introduce any of these actions into your life, any time, and you will begin to feel the benefits. Connect - Aroha mai, aroha atu – Love received, demands love returned You can connect in so many ways. Connect with the people around you, such as your whanau/family, friends, colleagues and neighbours. Connect at home, work, school, or in your local community. Think of these relationships as the cornerstone of your life and invest time in developing them. Building these connections will support and enrich you every day. Give – it’s the giving that counts, not the size of the gift Do something nice for a friend, or a stranger. Thank someone, smile, or volunteer your time by joining a community group. Seeing yourself, and your happiness, linked to the wider community can be incredibly rewarding and creates connection with the people around you. It feels good to give and everybody has something to offer. How will you play your part? Take Notice – my awakening, my language Be curious and catch sight of the beautiful, remark on the unusual. Notice the changing seasons. Try
savouring the moment, whether you are walking to work, eating lunch or talking to friends. Be aware of the world around you and what you are feeling. Reflecting on your experiences will help you appreciate what matters to you. Keep Learning – seek after learning for the sake of your wellbeing Try something new or rediscover an old interest. Sign up for that course or take on a different responsibility at work. Learn to play an instrument or how to cook your favourite food. Set a challenge you will enjoy achieving. Learning new things will make you more confident as well as being fun. Seek out new experiences and dare yourself. Be Active - Mauri tu, mauri ora – an active soul is a healthy soul Step outside - when was the last time you went for a bike ride, a jog or a walk in the fresh air? You could try playing a game or dancing with young ones. Check out your garden - pulling some weeds or planting something new can help you work up a sweat. Exercising makes you feel good. Discover a physical activity you enjoy and one that suits your level of mobility and fitness. Do what you can, enjoy what you do, be active and move your mood. The team at CN Wanaka is involved in a group of local professionals who meet to promote wellness in our community. If you would like further information about local resources to support mental well-being, feel free to make contact with us on 443 7799.

Think before you type Social media is a great tool. It allows us to stay in touch with loved ones on the other side of the world, it keeps us updated on breaking news and it’s a great way for businesses to share their services. But it can also cause a lot of confusion, and that confusion can spread quickly among communities. An example of this occurred last week when criticism of the Upper Clutha Hospice Trust on Facebook claimed that the proposed facility in the Aspiring Retirement Village would not be a hospice, but merely respite care beds that only the rich could afford. Chairperson Russel McGeorge has addressed these comments quickly in order to calm any fears and clear up any confusion. He said the trust is calling the facility a palliative and respite care suite, and has never claimed that it would be a fully serviced hospice. The facility will be available free of charge to all Upper Clutha residents with a terminal illness. There were a couple of serious allegations the resident made against the trust, which included suggestions that it was fraudulent, and that the funds being raised might be going to a different use. Even though McGeorge has addressed the comments, they undermined a non-for-profit run by people giving their time generously to help people in need. The resident, instead of churning out accusations, could have contacted the trust and the situation could have been explained in one simple phone call. We all know that we should think before speaking, but some people seem to need a reminder that we should think before typing, too.

Great service at New World As a resident of Wanaka we are proud to live here. The text message in last week’s Wanaka Sun regarding our New World store was uncalled for, and obviously does not know all the costs of groceries. We live the furthest distance from the suppliers and yet, if one checks the NW charges in the major towns, there would hardly be any differences if any. The customer service and efficiency of the devoted staff is absolutely tops. They handle the busy times which happens as skiers may arrive during the same time and yet the number of staff working there to handle the customers is the best I have seen form any town areas of the country. In time there will be another such supplier but we do not want to hear such sarcastic remarks. I have seen Wanaka grow over the past 45 years. The progress going hand in hand. Petrol costs are the highest and we have to accept that if we choose to live here. Go somewhere else if one is not happy. Thank you, Pete Chamberlayne

CRIME LINE By Constable Aubury Martin Another week has gone by and Wanaka is looking picturesque with the additional snow we received in the past few days. Here’s a rundown of the week that was. Care continually needs to be taken out on our roads. I attended a crash this week on the Crown Range Road after a driver failed to take a corner and ended up ploughing into a bank. Thankfully no one was injured. There are significant volumes of traffic returning to town from the ski fields at the end of the day. Please be patient with traffic and don’t try and do anything crazy that would put your family or other members of the public at risk. A black mercury 8 horsepower 2 stroke auxiliary engine was removed from the back of a boat from a quiet cul-de-sac off Hunter Crescent. Just a reminder to keep things locked and if you’re away on holiday get your neighbours to keep an eye on your property. We need to get away from the mentality that nothing gets taken in ‘little ole Wanaka’. The log cabin had one of their windows damaged this week. It would appear something was used to propel an object through it, making a neat hole about 6mm in diameter. Someone will know exactly how this happened. A male was stopped driving on Ardmore Street and underwent a breath test which gave a result of 849 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath. Found property of interest that has been handed into the station - an expensive branded skateboard, pair of branded skis, and Go Pros that someone must be missing. Also the usual items, like keys, glasses and bankcards. If you know who the owners may be, or be missing items yourself, please call into and have a chat with our front counter ladies. If you have any information pertaining to the incidents above please call the Station on 03 443 7272 to speak to an Officer, or to give information anonymously, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Have a great week.

Piera Hudson and Willis Feasey add slalom to national titles New New Zealand ski racers Piera Hudson (Wanaka) and Willis Feasey (Twizel) continued their winning streak at The New Zealand Alpine National Championships on Tuesday, claiming national titles in the slalom. The New Zealand Alpine National Championships and Coronet Cup hosted by Coronet Peak, the official ski area partner of the New Zealand Alpine Ski Team, started on Sunday August 9 with the Giant Slalom, Piera Hudson and Willis Feasey also claiming these titles. On Tuesday Piera laid down the fastest first run time amongst the
NZ field of 47.55s. “I wanted to step things up for the second run,” Piera said. True to her word Piera upped the game by posting the second fastest overall time for the second run. Her combined time of 1:37.02s put her in fourth place overall and first NZ woman. “I had two good runs and I’m really happy to claim the title today,” she said. “Two national titles - I couldn’t really ask for more.” In the males, top-placed Kiwi and 2015 National Slalom Champion Willis Feasey placed fourth overall and Adam Barwood fifth. Mac Gini (Switzerland) took the overall win on 1:28.31s.
Business owners wild about the outdoors Wanaka business owners Mark and Leonie Sanders have taken the decision to strike out along a new path with their rebranded store “Southern Wild” – specialising in hunting, fishing and the outdoors. Previously the store was known as Hamills Wanaka and before that Wanaka Sports, which Mark and Leonie owned for nine years. They made the decision to rebrand the store in order to stay more closely aligned with their core interests and values. Born and bred in the South Island of New Zealand, Mark and Leonie spent five years travelling the world before making Wanaka their home in 1998. They have three daughters and use every opportunity they can to get out into the great backyard we are so lucky to have here on our doorstep. The couple have a passion for hunting, fishing and all things outdoors, which can be seen in the Southern Wild shop and new website. With a huge percentage of customers coming from overseas, they saw it was important to go global by targeting customers online and equipping them with information needed for a southern outdoor experience. The Southern Wild webpage features information such as the perfect fishing spots at different times of year, weather conditions, as well as all the equipment and clothing required for the outdoors.

Mustering up some fun Maddy Harker Wanaka Sun It’s go-time for Merino Muster entrants. The 21st annual cross-country ski race will kick off this Saturday at 10am sharp at Snow Farm. Preparations are almost complete and to top it off, the field has been blessed with some great fresh snow over the last few days. “It’s just fantastic,” said organiser Mary Lee. The number of entrants for the 42km race has doubled this year and the event has attracted competitors from all over the world. The main bulk is from the USA, Australia, Russia and Japan, with a smattering from European countries and Great Britain, Mary said. Fancy dress is encouraged for the event, which promises to be fun for all ages. Spectator or
competitor, it will be a sight to see. If you haven’t entered yet, it’s not too late to dust off your skis and sign up. Race lengths for adults vary from the whole 42km trail, to the 7km Straggle Muster, with the 21km Snow Rake the middle option. So trained and ready-to-go or a little out of shape, there’s no excuse not to get involved. Even the little ones can take part in the race. The under-10s Mini Muster flat 1km course is perfect for young skiers, and each and every one will receive a medal for their efforts. The annual Merino Muster, first held in 1995, has become a must-do for cross-country skiers and attracts skiers from all over the world. If you haven’t done so yet, visit www.merinomuster.com now to sign up.

Coaching courses aim to boost confidence Naoise Wolsey Wanaka Sun Coaching courses are being held in Alexandra and Queenstown later this month to give parents and volunteers the tools and confidence to take on sports coaching roles. Organised by Sport Central, the courses are aimed at beginner to intermediate coaches who want to either learn to coach or improve their coaching. Sport Central co-ordinator Bill Godsall said volunteer coaches were an important part of sport in the region, so it was vital they felt supported in their roles.
“Many parents don’t have the confidence to take on a coaching role, but hopefully courses like this one will help with that. Sport anywhere can’t survive without coaches.” The courses will cover what the role of the coach is, communication, skill teaching and learning, sport safety and planning. The Alexandra course will be held on August 19 and will be run by Mike Weddell from Sport Otago. A Queenstown course will be held on August 20 and run by Luciana Garcia, from Sport Southland.
One last push needed to kickstart turf project Naoise Wolsey Wanaka Sun Sponsors from as far afield as Australia have come on board in support of Cromwell’s planned new $1.8 million sports turf and amenities building – but more sponsors are needed. The Central Otago Sports Turf Trust recently launched a fundraising initiative giving businesses, individuals, families and organisations the opportunity to sponsor a square metre of turf for $200. On completion of the turf upgrade, a plaque at the turf would be installed to recognise everyone who supported the project by sponsoring a square metre. Trust chairman Michael Paardekooper said the trust had a target of 150 sponsors being on board, with 30
sponsors confirmed so far. However, many people had spoken to him and the other trustees about becoming sponsors but had yet to fill out a registration form, he said. He urged them to do so, as the trust was extremely close to raising all of the funds it needed for the project – it just needed to raise the last 10 percent of funds. “We just need one last push to get us there.” Mr Paardekooper was delighted with the support the project had received so far and said people recognised the importance of having an international standard turf for the 800 hockey players in the region. Students have a ball at tournament Staff Reporter Wanaka Sun The third annual Tititea Netball Tournament was held in fine and sunny conditions on Saturday morning at Holy Family Catholic School. Eighty children from local schools played in Year 3, Year 4 and the new invitational section for Years 5/6 teams. Teams played rounds of six minutes each way, with play offs for the top two spots. It was a great experience for all involved with many children experiencing their very first tournament. The total raised during the morning from entry fees, activities and food sales, was just over $1000. All funds raised will go toward netball expenses like uniforms, awards and equipment to cover growing numbers of netball players. Section Winners: Year 3 – Wanaka Karaka; Year 4 – Wanaka Kowhai; Invitational – Wanaka Ferns. Bridget O’Brien Award for Courage and Determination: Year 3 - Stella Dineen, Savannah Abell, Jorja Miles, Jasmine Allison; Year 4 - Chili Papai, Layla Brooks, Millie Quick, Sienna Collins, Taylah Jones; Invitational - Muireanne Green, Amelia Mitchell, Emillie Nicholson.
Wanaka athlete finishes second in Ironman race Wanaka triathlon and multisport athlete Braden Currie (pictured) has taken out second place in the IRONMAN 70.3 race in Ecuador. Braden finished in four hours and six minutes, crossing the line just under 15 minutes behind British winner Tim Don. And Braden might have finished with an even better time; however a flat tyre 30km into the cycle leg of the race left him with too much work to do during the run stage of the race. Currie has been racing in XTERRA, multisport and long distance triathlon races since he won the 2015 Coast to Coast race in February. Having won the 2015 New Zealand and Asia Pacific titles, Currie came third in the USA XTERRA Mountain Championships after his training was halted due to an Achilles injury. PHOTO: SUPPLIED
