The global hacking of the Ashley Madison adultery website has indicated there are 127 members here in Wanaka. The slogan for the online dating service is “Life is short. Have an affair.” An interactive map created by Spanish software development company Tecnilogica claims to show cheating “hotspots”. The map indicates there are members throughout Central Otago – 127 in Wanaka, 699 in Queenstown, 95 in Cromwell, 78 in Alexandra and 37 in Arrowtown. According to the map, 92.126% of Wanaka users are male. The Canada-based site, touted as a cheating site for people married or in a committed relationship, was hacked on July 19. On August 19 the hackers dumped almost ten gigabytes of customer information on the Story continues deep web. page 2...

man involved in an attack on Wanaka local Kahu Vincent has been sentenced to eight years in prison. Leon Terence Rowles (34) was sentenced to eight years with a minimum non-parole period of four years when he appeared before Justice Mander in the High Court at Invercargill yesterday. He was also ordered to pay $1000 reparation on a charge of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Knowles, of Wanaka, pleaded guilty earlier this month to the charge. The attack took place on May 9 in the Ardmore Street Night ‘n Day store. A co-defendant is still before the courts in relation to the same incident. Kahu (28) suffered serious injuries in the assault and was in a coma for several weeks. He has since been discharged from hospital and is now recovering at home in Wanaka with his partner Jade Makuru and their two children. “It was emotional and we hoped for more time but it is what it is and at least he is behind bars,” Jade told

the Wanaka Sun after the sentencing. “One down, one more to go, then we can get on with our lives.” Jade read an emotional victim impact statement in court and later posted it on her Facebook page. In her statement Jade described the assault as a “brutal senseless attack on the most undeserving kind caring person”. She also described the lasting effects of the attack on Kahu and their family. “Kahu is home now and completely lacks confidence. He still struggles to walk properly and have normal conversations because he

can’t find the words in his head and get them out. He gets tired very quickly ... Kahu still can’t pick his children up off the ground to cuddle them. “Kahu could be impaired for the rest of his life. They have robbed us of living and doing normal family things.” The details of the assault were captured on a CCTV video camera and outlined in a police summary of facts. Justice Mander said that it was unclear what triggered the “brutal and unrelenting” assault that followed, but it was entirely unprovoked.

Wanaka Sun A trial period for a new counselling service in town has been so successful it is becoming a permanent fixture. The Wanaka Walk In Counselling Service will continue to be offered from Community Networks in Brownston Street. It will run from 9.30am until 3pm every Thursday. The service was set up by local counsellors Rachel Cassaidy and Yvonne Perkins (pictured from left), and a five week trial saw them run off their feet. “We’ve had an overwhelming response,” Rachel said. “People liked hearing that not everyone else is ‘living the dream’ and they loved our cotherapy approach.” Each client talks to Rachel and Yvonne together, for a one hour session. “People say it’s a lot less intimidating

Arbitrary Easter trading laws which have meant Wanaka shops cannot legally operate on Easter Sunday may soon be a thing of the past. Wanaka will be able to trade on Easter Sunday from 2017 if a proposed law change by government is passed. The bill would give local councils the ability to decide on Easter Sunday trading. Queenstown Lakes district councillor and deputy mayor Lyal Cocks described the change as “a major step forward”, noting the Wanaka economy relies on the visitor industry. Sally Gordon, owner of Soul Clothing, said it was vital Wanaka shops were open over Easter. “We open over Easter anyway, and most of the shops in town do too. It’s a massive proportion of our trade and it’s absolutely essential. “The thing is people come to Wanaka and they expect places to be open. It’s a tourist destination.” Wonder Room manager Harmony Gaw said she fully supported the law change. “The law has been completely hypocritical – we’re right next door to Queenstown and we’re a resort town,” Harmony said. “Easter is an enormously busy weekend, and especially on the years we have Warbirds, we’re absolutely flooded the days we are open,” Harmony said. Workplace Relations Minister Michael Woodhouse, who announced the proposed change, described the current law as “complex and relatively arbitrary”. He criticised that towns like Rotorua and Wanaka were unable to take advantage of the tourist trade, while Queenstown and Taupo could. “The result is that some businesses and regions have an unfair advantage over others,” Woodhouse said. “The proposed law change will enable communities to choose whether or not to allow trading. It will mean regions, especially tourist areas, can respond where there is strong demand for Easter Sunday trading.” Only changes to Easter Sunday are being proposed, Woodhouse said, to reflect the religious and cultural significance attached to Good Friday, Anzac Day and Christmas.

Conan Doyle spoof on its way Caroline Harker Wanaka Sun A theatrical adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s novel The Hound of the Baskervilles - is coming to the Upper Clutha for two nights in September one in Wanaka and another in Cromwell. The comedy spoof, adapted by Steven Canny and John Nicholson, is being brought here following a season at the Fortune Theatre in Dunedin. The play stars legendary detective Sherlock Holmes and his trusty sidekick Dr Watson, who are called in after Sir Charles Baskerville is found dead on his remote estate, in seemingly supernatural circumstances, and surrounded by giant paw prints.

Holmes, Watson and 15 other characters are played by three actors; Nick Dunbar, Simon Leary and Patrick Davies (who also directs the production). Early in the play the actors speak directly to the audience, telling them there has been a mix up and most of the cast haven’t arrived, but not to despair as the trio will play all the parts themselves. “The dynamic is perfect, and the chief delight of this engaging show is that the actors clearly enjoy the mad romp as much as the audience does,” said Theatreview critic Terry MacTavish. “All three actors are miraculously deft as they dart about the stage, contorting their bodies into incredible positions for our viewing pleasure. … The high

point though, has to be the brilliantly contrived opening to the second half, when, enraged by a disparaging tweet ‘posted during interval’, Nick Dunbar insists on rerunning the whole first half at breakneck speed. It takes about eight minutes, and is an absolute tour-de-force.” Dunedin reviewer Barbara Frame described the play as, “a spectacular spoof…good balmy fun… will appeal to anyone who needs a dose of midwinter mayhem or just likes a good laugh”. A well-reviewed adaptation of a classic, odds are this production will be well received in the Upper Clutha as well. It is on in Cromwell on September 10 and Wanaka on September 11.

Wanaka’s first comedy improvisation (improv) group is all fired up for its first ever show tonight at the Gin and Raspberry. Organised by Michael Boothby, the show format will be loosely based on popular American improv TV show “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” “The show will feature a variety of different improv games. We’ll be making up everything on the spot and the audience will be providing the

inspiration,” said Michael. “Before every game I’ll ask for a different suggestion. It’s a very interactive show and due to the spontaneous, unpredictable nature of it, no show will ever be the same.” Originally from Orlando, Florida, Michael came to Wanaka to work for the winter season. “My passion for improv began at university where I took a beginner class on a whim. There was just something magical about improv, creating everything on the spot. Before coming to New Zealand I worked on a cruise ship hosting activities,

which is where I first started teaching improv classes.” After arriving in Wanaka, Michael began teaching weekly improv classes here too and eventually a small, dedicated group of students emerged. “Before this season, none of the members of the team had done improv before except for one. It’s been exciting and rewarding to see them grow and develop as improvisers together.” The show, called “Want a Car”, is free to all and starts tonight at 6pm in the Gin and Raspberry.

Ashley Madison website hack exposes ‘cheats’ Continued from page 1 The map by Tecnilogica shows over 100,000 members in New Zealand, which, if accurate, would mean 1 in 32 Kiwis over 20 years old has an account. However, Ashley Madison memberships don’t require email verification, meaning many of these profiles may be fakes. Furthermore, hackers

said that up to 95% of profiles belong to men. “Chances are your man signed up on the world’s biggest affair site, but never had one. He just tried to. If that distinction matters,” the hackers said. Two suicides in Canada have been associated with the Ashley Madison hack, Toronto police said in a statement on

Monday. High-profile celebrities have been publicly shamed, government email addresses have been used for memberships and reports of extortion aimed at individual members have been reported. Avid Life Media is currently offering $500,000 [Canadian] for information leading to the arrest of the hackers.

Get hooked on this tasty salmon burger Get hooked on this tasty salmon burger Top chef Angelo Georgalli has been cooking up a storm around the Wanaka region in his new TV show The Game Chef. Try out this salmon burger, which Angelo cooked on the shores of Lake Hawea, from the comfort of your own home. “I love salmon burgers,” said PHOTO: SALLY GREER Angelo. “They’re so juicy, fresh, moist, and tasty. I’m totally hooked, line and sinker, on this particular burger. It’s a definite must-try.” INGREDIENTS: 180g salmon fillet, skin on, descaled; 2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil; 1 tsp lemon pepper; Zest and juice of ½ a lemon; 1 Tbsp roughly chopped fresh dill; 1 clove garlic, crushed and roughly chopped Hollandaise Dressing: 3 egg yolks; ½ Tbsp red wine vinegar; 150g melted butter; Pinch of lemon pepper; Zest and juice of ½ a lemon; 1 Tbsp roughly chopped; fresh dill To serve: 1 ciabatta loaf, shaved cucumber, ½ cup mesclun leaves, tomato slices, avocado slices, lemon pepper, lemon zest

METHOD: Place the salmon in a bowl and add the oil, lemon pepper, lemon zest and juice, dill and garlic. Coat salmon in this marinade and set aside. For the hollandaise dressing, bring 2 cups of water to the boil in a saucepan. In a stainless steel bowl combine the egg yolks, vinegar and lemon pepper. Position the bowl so the base is sitting in the saucepan of hot water and whisk the egg yolks until they begin to thicken. Slowly add the melted butter to the egg mixture, whisking as you go. Add the lemon zest, juice, and dill, and stir until the sauce is the consistency of runny custard. Remove the bowl and set aside. Place the salmon on a preheated barbecue grill, skin-side down, and cook for 4–5 minutes each side. To serve: Slice the ciabatta in half and lightly toast both pieces on the barbecue. Spread the cut sides with hollandaise, then stack half the cucumber, mesclun, tomato and avocado on top. Season with lemon pepper and top with the salmon. Pile on the remaining salad ingredients. Spread the remaining hollandaise on top and sprinkle with lemon zest before topping with the other half of the ciabatta loaf.

A blooming great cause Naoise Wolsey Wanaka Sun A group of volunteers joined forces at the Community Networks centre this week to help wrap and distribute 270 bunches of the bright yellow blooms ahead of Daffodil Day tomorrow (Friday August 28). Led by Sue Saunders, Wanaka’s Daffodil Day volunteer co-ordinator, the daffodils were delivered to businesses around Wanaka who pre-ordered flowers from the charity. “We’d like to thank everyone for their generous donations and support,” said Sue.

“We’ll be delivering them in Wanaka, Hawea, up to the ski fields and even to Haast.” Daffodil Day is the Cancer Society’s annual flagship event. It raises awareness of cancer in New Zealand and is a major source of funding. Donations go towards scientific research into the causes and treatment of all types of cancer, as well as providing a wide range of support services, information, health promotion and education programmes to reduce cancer risk, awareness campaigns and programmes for people affected by cancer.

FARMING NEWS

thewanakasun.co.nz

Local farmers ‘cautiously optimistic’ Caroline Harker Wanaka Sun While it hasn’t been a great year for the rural sector, Federated Farmers Otago Province president Phill Hunt says most Upper Clutha farmers remain cautiously optimistic. Beef prices are reaching record highs and wool is well up, although lamb prices are down. Of the hundred or so farms in the district, only a couple are dairy farms, and prospects for them are not good. Nationwide dairy farmers were advised to budget on a payout of $5.25 per kilo of milk solids, which would have resulted in average farm losses of about $300,000. The payout fell to $3.50, meaning significantly larger losses and considerable financial stress. This will impact the local farmers providing dairy grazing in the Upper Clutha when their current contracts are renewed. “It looks like dairy grazing will be down next year in terms of numbers and prices,” Phill said. “A lot of our farmers are into dairy grazing. Distance can be a problem and dairy farmers could be more inclined to go to South or Central Otago [instead of the Upper Clutha] for grazing because

transport will be cheaper.” Phill said the weakening New Zealand dollar will result in improved meat and wool prices for farmers. “There are big numbers of beef cattle in the area and prices are as good as they have ever been,” he said. The prime beef schedule price is around $5.80 per kilo and manufacturing beef is just under $5 per kilo. Wool is up by about a dollar per kilo, or 20 percent on last year. One ewe produces about 4kg of fleece wool each year. “Wool prices are back to where we were in 1989, which doesn’t sound great, but it’s a lot better than where we were a few years ago,” Phill said. Wool prices have doubled in the last 10 years. In the 1990s farmers’ incomes were approximately 50/50 from meat and wool, but wool has dropped to less than 10 percent of total farm income. Phill said this has led to significant changes in farming practices in the Upper Clutha, particularly for high country farmers. “Many have changed their focus from wool production to meat,” he said. This has often meant a change of emphasis from merino to crossbred sheep, and more intensification of

flat land so farmers can finish lambs before selling then. Unfortunately lamb prices are down, well below the five year average. “No-one knows where they are going either, although they have come up a bit recently.” Phill said. From a peak of around $7/kg, this week lamb was selling for about $5/kg. Phill said prices for venison are also below the five year average, although they are on the rise. With world financial markets currently shaky, Phill said whatever happens in China will affect New Zealand farmers. “China is a major protein market, particularly for milk powder, mutton and beef,” he said. The United States is another significant market. “We’re going to reach our beef quota there for the first time since 2004, and we’re unsure how that will play out.” Europe is currently oversupplied with lamb, and the Gulf States lamb market is not strong either, both of which are affecting lamb prices, Phill said. Meanwhile, with lambing in the district due to start in mid-September, farmers are keen to see the grass start growing.

FARMING NEWS A monthly column by Kim Reilly of Federated Farmers, on issues affecting the Upper Clutha’s rural community…

The Queen once referred to the year 1992 as an “annus horribilis”, a horrible year. Some farmers will look back on 2015 in a similar, if not quite so polite, way. Last summer was long, hot and dry, with drought extending across much of the South Island. Rivers were soon hitting low flows and the hope of rain was like the Auckland rugby team, ever-promising but never delivering. While communities came together to work through water shortages, the Rural Support Trust, Federated Farmers and others began to co-ordinate much-needed advice and support to those affected. Events like the Upper Clutha A&P Show provided much-needed respite for farmers from across the South Island, providing a real chance for farmers to get off the farm and get together, lighten the load and relax a little. Weather conditions did slowly begin to let up in many areas, but then troubles loomed in the dairy sector, with repeated falls in dairy pay-outs and pressure coming on remaining feed supplies. Talks of continued El Niño conditions through the remainder of the year do nothing to help raise farmer confidence. Even for areas like the Upper Clutha, the impacts of these woes will be felt, as they extend beyond dairy farms and dairy support businesses, to local, regional and national economies. Ever-increasing central and local government rules and regulations add to farmer stresses, with

FARMBRIEFS Farmer of the Year entrant Local farmers Adam and Annabel Spiers are among 12 entries in the 2015 Lincoln University Foundation South Island Farmer of the Year award. The Spiers have three farms near Tarras (including Lindis Crossing Station) and one near Ashburton. They finish lamb, venison, prime beef and bull beef. Adam said they have put in a large amount of irrigation in the last few years. Finalists will be announced in midOctober, and the winner on November 18. The prize is a $20,000 study travel grant to further farm business knowledge. Adam said if he won he would go to China to study the country’s internal production of lamb and beef, “since China is such a big player”. Other entrants include a summer fruit pro-

the feeling that everyone is looking over their fence these days, wanting a say on how things should be done at farm level. To a certain extent, farmers need to anticipate these changes and adapt their businesses as required. But the reality is that this year many farmers are just focusing on “getting through”, using every ounce of resilience they have. With this is mind, one myth needs to be debunked. Over the past two decades, we’ve increasingly heard mumblings about “greedy farmers” hungry for money. Federated Farmers has long disputed this stereotype. We see the long, tiring hours farmers put in, their passion for the land, the animals, the industry and the lifestyle. To me, 2015 will show just that. How many urban people can say that they would get up before sunrise and work long tiring hours each day knowing that at the end of the year, they’re looking at significant losses? Most dairy farmers’ annual budgets already show deficits in the hundreds of thousands. With many having no choice but to graze winter stock on their own farms, dairy graziers will also hurt. But most farmers are in it for the long game. They want to leave their land to subsequent generations better than when they took it over, with a legacy they’re proud of. Being resilient isn’t new to farmers and it’s not sympathy and handouts they’re after, just a simple acknowledgement that things really are tough out there at the moment.

New park is skate of the art Naoise Wolsey Wanaka Sun This Saturday marks the official opening of Wanaka’s skatepark extension at Pembroke Park. The $350,000 development has been in the pipelines for the last nine years and now provides skateboarders and bikers with a high-class regional facility. Plans are already in place for a further extension by 2019 and there are hopes for high-level competitions at the park in the near future. Wanaka Skateboard Club spokesman and fundraiser Eddie Spearing said the original park was about 800 square metres, the extension adds another 500 square metres. The Pembroke Park Management Plan permits up to 2000 square metres, so there are still 700 square metres left for further developments. “After nine years it’s great to finally

see the park come to fruition,” said Eddie. “The skate park has so many different user groups – it’s got skaters, BMX bikers and tiny kids on scooters. The old park was very linear and just about going backwards and forwards. The park’s new bowl removes a bunch of skaters into that area. Some older skaters have come out of the woodwork and are using it a lot and the younger skaters can increase their skills. “There’s a new section on the town end of the park that’s still to come - it will create a different flow going across the back. The new areas help to relieve congestion and cater to much higher levels of ability.” This Saturday’s event will feature an opening ceremony with a ribbon cutting, skate demos, a barbecue and live music. Some high-profile skaters are also tipped to be making an appearance.

Construction work taking place at the skatepark, which officially opens this Saturday.

Nasa balloon at Warbirds airshow

Angler lands large fine for second offence

Naoise Wolsey Wanaka Sun Visitors to next year’s Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow will have the chance to learn first-hand a lot more about Nasa’s scientific ballooning programme. A team from Nasa is planning to be in Wanaka for the launch of a second huge scientific research balloon just four days after the airshow, which runs from March 25 to 28, 2016. Nasa is scheduled to exhibit in one of the hangars at Wanaka Airport and this facility will be open at times during the airshow for the general public to check out the gear required for the launch and to chat with Nasa scientists.

The view from a super pressure balloon.

“Nasa was here earlier this year for the first balloon launch and there was lots of local interest in what they were up to. Having them here during Warbirds Over Wanaka will give more people the opportunity to learn about the balloon programme,” says Warbirds Over Wanaka General

Manager, Ed Taylor. Dwayne Orr, from Nasa, said they enjoy any opportunity to meet with members of the public to inform them about their work. “We’ve heard lots about Warbirds Over Wanaka and are looking forward to working with their organising team and getting involved with a display and information sessions.”

Glue ear and grommets Glue ear is a build-up of fluid inside the middle ear (behind the ear drum). Glue ear is known as Otitis Media with Effusion. What causes glue ear? The middle ear constantly produces fluid and absorbs air. This fluid usually empties away from the middle ear when we yawn or swallow and is replaced by air through the Eustachian tube. But when we have an ear infection, this process doesn’t work as it should due to swelling, and results in the fluid thickening up as it builds up behind the middle ear. Is glue ear serious? While chronic and untreated glue ear can have a detrimental effect on your child’s language and speech development, it will usually cause temporary problems with your child’s hearing. If your child has glue ear, he may: • Suddenly seem deaf – he can’t hear you, he needs everything to be loud • Start being louder – he may start speaking louder than normal

WANAKA SUN

PHOTO:SUPPLIED

• Seem inattentive – with reduced hearing, he’ll miss some of what is going on around him seem unusually irritable – usually because his head feels foggy and he can’t ‘clear’ his ears. Sometimes the ears will be sore. How do you test for glue ear? At New Zealand Hearing, we perform a simple test called a tympanogram. It immediately gives a result that confirms if glue ear is present. Treating glue ear: Once confirmed by New Zealand Hearing, if your GP has tried to resolve your child’s ear infections by using antibiotics (of which you may have been prescribed two courses) without success, he may refer you to a specialist. If your child suffers from glue ear that cannot be resolved, he may need to have grommets (tiny ventilation tubes) to be put into the eardrum to allow the thick glue-like fluid to flow out, and to allow the middle ear to be ventilated. Grommets are fitted under anaesthetic and this type of day-surgery is one of the most common done on young children.

An angler was fined nearly $1200 last week after being caught fishing without a licence on Lake Wanaka for the second time. His angling gear was also forfeited. Otago Fish & Game Council Operations Manager Ian Hadland said the Invercargill man paid a $500 fine for the first unlicenced angling offence back in 2013 but was apprehended by rangers in nearly the same location near the lake outlet for a second time this summer. “That’s a risky game to play. We check around 1500 anglers annually and we are out on the water a lot. For the sake of a $25 a day licence he could have saved himself a lot of drama and expense,” Mr Hadland said. This is the latest fine in a series of large penalties. “The requirement for a fishing licence is well known and understood and legitimate anglers have an expectation that we will jump all over anyone caught without one. It seems that the courts are increasingly supportive of that principle and recognise that licence fees are important in maintaining the sports fishery and habitat on behalf of all New Zealanders. So this is another good result,” Mr Hadland said.

What are grommets? • Grommets are tiny (approx. 2mm wide), plastic ventilation tubes that sit in place through the ear drum, allowing air circulate around the middle ear and fluid to drain out to the ear canal. • Once the fluid is removed and air can get into the middle ear once more, your child’s hearing will improve rapidly. • The grommets will fall out over time (usually between 3 and 18 months). As your child grows, his ear drum grows too. • Some children need to have multiple sets of grommets put in over succeeding years until their Eustachian tubes are big enough to deal with the fluid unassisted. • While your child has grommets, he will need to have his ears checked regularly to ensure that the grommets are in place and working properly; very occasionally, a grommet can get blocked.

IMPORTANT! While your child has grommets, you will need to take precautions to keep water out of the middle ear – this means using ear plugs, silicone putty and a swimming cap or ear wrap every time your child gets his head wet, be that while swimming or bathing. Without protecting your child’s ear, you will leave it open to bacteria from dirty water.

PERRIAM impresses at New Zealand Fashion Week Wanaka-based designer Christina Perriam has made her mark at New Zealand Fashion Week (NZFW). Luxury merino fashion brand PERRIAM impressed national and international audiences during its debut at NZFW in Auckland on Tuesday. PERRIAM Woman Winter 16 was unveiled on the catwalk as part of NZFW’s Choose Wool show, held at the ANZ Viaduct Events Centre in front of a capacity audience. Christina drew on her high-country merino farming background for the PERRIAM Woman Winter 16 range. Christina hails from Bendigo Station, near Tarras, and is firmly entrenched in the wool industry through her upbringing and 15 years as a designer working with merino wool. “To be selected for Choose Wool at NZFW has been an

absolute honour, as PERRIAM truly represents what the show is celebrating – wool in NZ fashion. The NZ wool industry is respected internationally and fashion plays an important role within the industry. PERRIAM garments are designed to last with timeless elegance and style and we’re proudly NZ-made, using NZ-produced merino,” said Christina. Curated by top Kiwi stylist Anna Caselberg, Choose Wool showcased some of New Zealand’s leading designers. PERRIAM featured alongside Sabatini, twenty-seven names, Tanya Carlson, Hailwood, Liz Mitchell, French83 and Wynn Hamlyn. Titled “Untamed”, PERRIAM Woman Winter 16 is inspired by the rugged beauty and natural environment of Central Otago. The collection features New Zealand merino wool with touches of rabbit fur, merino leather and other textiles.

A sorry state of affairs

It has been over a week since the personal data of millions of Ashley Madison website users was leaked online — their names, email addresses and sexual preferences splattered across the web for all to see. The slogan for the online dating service, which was hacked last week, is “Life is short. Have an affair.” And the repercussions are already being felt worldwide. Reported suicides, early divorce proceedings and extortion attempts have been linked to the scandal. Celebrities, politicians and the US military have been shamed for their alleged involvement with the site. Jobs are being threatened and families are being shattered. What a sorry state of affairs indeed. But before you start playing the blame game and pointing the finger, remember that not everyone connected with the site has been unfaithful. The website doesn’t verify email addresses with its users, so many of the emails linked to the site may be fake. One gay Saudi Arabian claims to have used the service because of its promise of discretion — he has since had to flee because homosexuality is punishable by death in his country. Some may use the site because they are tempted to cheat but are resisting the urge, or because they’re researchers observing this area of online interaction, or for countless other reasons. Even for those who aren’t found out, the fear of eventually being discovered will always hang over them - the internet never forgets. For the Ashley Madison members who aren’t discovered, the punishment never ends.

Wanaka is a bustling wee town at the moment with the Winter Games bringing a few more visitors into the region. I was up at Cardona ski field during the week and saw first-hand the amazing talent the athletes have. Here is a snapshot of what we’ve been dealing with this week including an array of opportunist thefts around town and up the ski fields.

A Motorola PDA was taken from a vehicle parked in the New World car park. You are probably wondering what a PDA is. I’ve been told it looks like a cell phone however it is a lot thicker and has a screen with a keyboard underneath. Take that extra few seconds to make sure you haven’t left valuables in your vehicle and that it is locked and secured. A ‘Douchebag’ backpack was taken from Cardrona ski field at the bottom of the half pipe. The owner is very keen to get his belongings back. A male shoplifter has taken several packets of meat from New World without paying for them. Police have CCTV footage of the male and are making enquiries to identify him. Police dealt with 6 males who were seen helping themselves to a pile of firewood at Cardrona. There is no excuse for this behaviour and it could land you in a deal of unnecessary trouble. A male driver was stopped and dealt with for driving whilst disqualified on Wanaka-Mount Aspiring Road. Another male driver was stopped and processed for driving with excess breath alcohol. If you have any information pertaining to the incidents above please call the Station on 03 443 7272 to speak to an Officer, or to give information anonymously, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

THURSDAY 27.08.15 - WEDNESDAY 02.09.15

Get serious about shoplifters Surely I am not the only person in Wanaka who is absolutely incensed with the police for allowing a shoplifter to “get off with a pre-charge warning”, leaving her to keep holidaying around our country pinching from other towns, which I’m very sure she will carry on doing. I too love chocolate as do most people but most pay for theirs. We also have known recidivists here in Wanaka and, until these people are charged and named, they will keep doing this, spoiling it for anyone else with a shred of decency Come on Wanaka police, do your job properly, not just when it’s high profile. Lesly Stewart Wanaka

Have your say on parking Well done to the Wanaka Community Board for hosting the meeting last week on Wanaka’s car parking. The meeting was attended by mostly long-time residents and their overriding sentiment appeared to be that they are not happy with the continual degradation of the experience of visiting Wanaka’s town centre and finding a suitable park. Wanaka has a plethora of business operators and promoters. Can we assume they are happy with the current and future parking options? They weren’t at this meeting, so hopefully they are submitting their wise thoughts and suggestions by some other means. Wanaka cannot continue marketing itself as a lifestyle reserve without making a strong effort to protect that lifestyle. The lifestyle of Upper Clutha’s residents should be the most important concern. Do we want ever increasing congestion in the car, and at our destinations? So do council planners and our Community Board have the right vision and means to see us safely into an even busier future? Have you attended, enquired or suggested? Solutions are not quick, easy or cheap. I suspect we will eventually see heavy rate increases or a tourist bed tax to help. Noel Williams Wanaka

Public Notification Of The Proposed Queenstown Lakes District Plan (Stage 1) The Council has completed the first stage of the District Plan review and is now notifying the Proposed Queenstown Lakes District Plan (Stage 1) for public submission pursuant to Schedule 1 Clause 5 of the RMA . There are many differences between the current Operative District Plan and the Proposed District Plan. The Proposed District Plan affects all properties in the District and may affect what you and your neighbours can do with your properties. You should take a look to see what it means for you. In summary, some of the key substantive changes include:

New rules make planting of wilding exotic trees prohibited.

An Indigenous Vegetation chapter incorporates a new schedule of areas of significant indigenous vegetation and significant habitats of indigenous fauna, and introduces new rules to protect areas that are defined as acutely or chronically threatened land environments.

More liberal regulations for temporary activities, such as public events and filming.

A number of designations are rolled-over, modified or cancelled.

Jacks Point zone rules are simplified, and the need for a resource consent for all new dwellings is removed.

Millbrook zone is extended to incorporate new land acquired by Millbrook and the Structure Plan is modified to account for this. Overall development rights (450 dwellings) not increased.

A new Strategic Direction chapter that sets out the overall approach to ensuring the District’s sustainable management in an integrated manner.

An Urban Development Chapter that sets out a growth management direction for the District, and introduction of Urban Growth Boundaries around urban areas.

To understand in more detail how the Proposed District Plan affects you, check out the full version or a summarised fact sheet any time online at www.qldc.govt.nz/proposed-district-plan.

A Landscape Chapter that sets out how development affecting the District’s valued landscapes will be managed including the mapping of lines that identify OutstandingNatural Landscapes and Features.

A Tangata Whenua chapter that sets out key Tangata Whenua values.

In addition to viewing the Proposed District Plan online it can also be viewed at any of the following locations during business hours. (Council offices 8.30am5pm. Library opening hours vary, please check www.codc-qldc.govt.nz for details).

Revision of residential rules, including: - Provision for greater building height in the High Density Residential Zone; - Introduction of a new Medium Density Residential zone in Fernhill, central Queenstown, Frankton, Arrowtown and Wanaka, and; - Changes to the Low Density Residential zone to enable more potential fo infill housing by changing density controls and residential flat provisions.

A new Large Lot Residential zone is introduced in Wanaka replacing the Rural Residential zoned areas within the proposed Urban Growth Boundary.

Amendments to town centre provisions to: -

Provide potential for limited extra building height in some defined locations; Greater emphasis on urban design; Noise rules that are more permissive in defined ‘Entertainment Precincts’, and; Transition overlay areas that apply to residential areas on the edge of town centres that provide opportunity for commercial land use.

Introduction of a new Business Mixed Use Zone in Queenstown and Wanaka that increases building heights and provides for a mix of land uses including residential activity.

Options for making a submission are: • • •

Online: www.qldc.govt.nz/proposed-district-plan Post: Queenstown Lakes District Council, Private Bag 50072, Queenstown 9348, Attention: Proposed District Plan Submission Email: services@qldc.govt.nz (subject line: Proposed District Plan Submission)

If you decide not to make a submission using our online form, please be aware that written submissions must be on Form 5 as prescribed by the Resource Management Act 1991. Your submission must state whether or not you wish to speak to your submission at a hearing. This form is available from the locations listed above.

A Local Shopping Centre zone replaces the Corner Shopping Centre zone in existing locations, and is introduced to new locations in Hawea, Albert Town, Wanaka, Arrowtown and Queenstown,

The Rural Zone relaxes some rules around farm buildings, undertaking building alterations within approved building platforms, introduces new standards for informal airports (which includes helicopter take-offs and landings), and introduces new rules to manage dairy grazing stock and dairy farm facilities. Some areas in the Wakatipu Basin are proposed to be rezoned to Rural Lifestyle zone.

The closing date for submissions is Friday 23 October 2015. •

We will prepare a summary of decisions requested by submitters and publicly notify the availability of this summary and where the summary and full submissions can be inspected;

The Rural Lifestyle Zone in Glenorchy to be extended and regulation of new building will be lightened subject to compliance with standards. A similar approach is taken in the Rural Residential zone and Gibbston Character Zone.

The prohibited status for non-motorised commercial boating on Lake Hayes has been removed, but motorised boating will remain prohibited.

People who represent a relevant aspect of the public interest or have an interest greater than the interest of the general public may make a further submission, in the prescribed form within 10 working days of notification of the summary of decisions sought, supporting or opposing submissions already made;

Heritage Landscapes are confirmed in the District Plan, and statements of significance will apply to these and heritage precincts providing greater clarity on the key features to protect.

A copy of the further submission must also be served on the Council and the person who made the original submission;

Submitters may speak in support of their submission(s) at a hearing if they have indicated in their submission that they wish to be heard;

Following the hearing the Council will give notice of its decision on the Proposed District Plan and matters raised in submissions, including its reasons for accepting or rejecting submissions;

Every submitter then has the right to appeal the decision on the Proposed District Plan to the Environment Court.

Most subdivision activity will become a discretionary activity rather than a controlled activity, and be non-notified subject to compliance with standards such as minimum lot size. The subdivision provisions reference a Subdivision Design Guide and Infrastructure Code of Practice to encourage good subdivision design.

A Natural Hazard chapter seeks to balance the need for development with natural hazard risk. Most natural hazards will not be mapped in the District Plan, rather the Council’s Natural Hazards database will be relied on.

General tree protection provisions are removed (due to legislative change), and character trees have been identified for protection within the Arrowtown Residential Historic Management Zone.

A team of seven Mt Aspiring College students arrived back on Monday from the Kangaroo Hoppet Cross Country Skiing Race in Australia. With a total of 860 racers across three race lengths - 42km, 21km and 7km - students gained invaluable race experience and coaching from Andy Pohl, NZ’s elite cross country skier, who travelled with the team. The students all took part in the 7km race (with 356 other skiers) and achieved the following placings in their age groups: Campbell Wright - 1st; Tom Colbourne and Olivia Jones – 3rd; Ben McNabb – 4th; Louis Jones – 4th; Ella Maluschnig – 5th; Ellen Cagney – 6th. In addition to great individual placings, the combined times of the top three racers meant Mt Aspiring College won the secondary schools Joey Cup, the first time this cup has made it across the Tasman.

The NZ championships race winners in each class were: 6 Dog - David Fitchett (Christchurch); 4 Dog - Sean Hennessy (Adelaide); 3 Dog - Donovan Chew (Perth); 2 Dog - Jon Pinney (Dunedin); 1 Dog - Larry Nichvolodov (Dunedin).

Another win for Hall New Zealand paralympian Adam Hall has stamped his name on yet another Winter Games NZ slalom title after romping home to win the gold medal in Tuesday’s International Paralympic Committee Alpine Skiing (IPCAS) Southern Hemisphere Cup at Coronet Peak. Hall won back-to-back slalom golds at the Games in 2013, and did not disappoint fans this week when he was the clear winner in both runs, clocking 38.13 and 36.10 for an overall time of 1.14.23. New Zealand’s Corey Peters, ranked 15th in the world in the slalom sitting category, chased American Tyler Walker and world number 12 hard, but had to be content with second place in 1.17.71, when Walker put down the two fastest runs for a combined time of 1.14.80. Peters who won silver in giant slalom at the Sochi Paralympics said slalom is still a work in progress for him. While happy to achieve second place ahead of Korean Sang Min Han, who recorded 1.19.87, he said mistakes in both runs cost him. “You can’t afford to make mistakes like that.” WANAKA SUN

Golden girl Jamie is still making waves Of the world’s top snow sports athletes here for the Winter Games, Jamie Anderson is one you won’t have missed. The GoPro athlete took out first place in the Ladies Snowboard Slopestyle on Saturday with a best score of 87.88. Her visit to New Zealand was short and sharp, but The Wanaka Sun was lucky enough to catch up with Jamie on her visit. Born and bred at Lake Tahoe, Jamie is one of eight siblings. All the kids in the family were home-schooled by their parents, and were able to spend most of their time in the great outdoors. Jamie’s first foray into snowboarding was at age nine – when her sister outgrew her snowboard. She was almost instantly obsessed. “The first day was a little tough, but as soon as I got the hang of it I was out there!” Jamie said. “I feel so much freedom and joy when I’m on the mountains. It’s my favourite thing ever.” Just a few years later Jamie qualified for the
