lbert Town adventurer and canyoning business owner Dave Vass is back in Wanaka after nearly eight months in hospital. He was seriously injured in a fall returning from a climbing trip in Fiordland’s Darran Mountains in January. “I’m officially tetraplegic but I’m still progressing,” Dave told The Wanaka Sun. For the first two months Dave had no movement in his legs and arms, except for in his left bicep.

Now he can walk with assistance using a Zimmer frame for about 10 minutes at a time. “I’m staggering back and forth,” he said. “My progress is glacial but it’s relatively consistent. I’m luckier than many of the people I was in Burwood [Hospital] with.” Dave’s latest improvement is he can lift the big toe of his right foot, which is important for his walking. “No-one can tell me how long I might continue to improve,” he said. “My spinal cord injury is ‘incomplete’ so neural regeneration is possible. I hope to be up on my feet in a year or so.”

Meanwhile Dave has an electric wheelchair, a van with a hoist for the chair, and 24-hour care, all provided by the Accident Corporation Commission (ACC). Dave currently has three people looking after him, who he describes as ‘one hairy Australian rock climber and two young groovy types’ who he found through mutual friends. “I like to call them my wonderful assistants, not carers,” he said. “I’m still looking for a couple more. They need to be capable and fun to be around. A good time is guaranteed.” While ACC has agreed to pay

for alterations to the Albert Town home Dave shares with his partner Ros Goulding, this work hasn’t started yet. Meanwhile they are hiring a house which is suitable for Dave’s electric wheelchair, and need to find another one before December as the one they are in has been sold. A warm singlestory place with wide doors and a concrete floor would be ideal. Dave said he has received wonderful support from the wider community, “right from the moment we pushed the EPIRB” (emergency position-indicatStory continues ing radio beacon). page 3...

There was some good news for Wanaka’s great crested grebes this week as two new chicks were spotted on the lake. In 2013 there was just one pair of grebes living on Lake Wanaka but now, thanks to some innovative work by retired Wanaka zoologist John Darby, there are at least nine breeding pairs in the Roy’s Bay area. One of the problems faced by this endangered water bird is that they live on floating nests and Lake Wanaka’s fluctuating levels mean their nests either flood or are left high and dry. They cannot walk on land due to their anatomy – their legs are far back on their body – making them vulnerable to predators. John spent two years studying them and designing a floating wooden nesting platform to help boost their population and it has been a great success. “I’m delighted. It’s much better than what I had anticipated,” John said. “The grebes caught us on the hop by breeding in winter, usually they wait until October. So far this winter five chicks have fledged, so that makes 36 chicks for the Roy’s Bay Marina and there’s at least another five nests with eggs.” The next nest is set to hatch this Saturday (September 5).

A local wine has been judged the best Pinot Noir in the country. Maude Wines’ Mount Maude Vineyard Pinot Noir 2014 won Champion Pinot Noir and the Mike Wolter Memorial Trophy, at the Romeo Bragato Wine Awards held in Hawke’s Bay last week. Bragato awards go to the grower, recognising that growing excellent grapes is the foundation of making great wine. Pictured with the trophy are Terry and Dawn Wilson who first planted grapes in the Maungawera Valley in 1994. Their first winemaker was Mike Wolter and the trophy, which bears his name, was carved by the late Rolph Mills who established Rippon Vineyard. This is the first time the trophy has been awarded to an Upper Clutha wine, which makes it especially significant for the Wilsons. Maude Wines are now made by their daughter Sarah-Kate Dineen and her husband Dan. The judges, chaired by Ben Glover, said of the Mount Maude Pinot Noir 2014: “Wickedly seducing floral notes, lavender and violets.

Vibrant dark cherry and poised brambly fruits meld beautifully with five spice and whole bunch support - providing sensual complexity. The palate is a glorious combination of abundant fruit flesh allied to prominent yet savoury layered textural tannin profile. Youthful, fresh, and alive - perfect! This is a Pinot where intimate knowledge of the vineyard and a natural flair and touch can be seen - and how to get the best out of this site is simply refreshing to see.” Mount Maude Pinot Noirs have received praise from critics for many years. The 2009 vintage got five stars in Gourmet Traveller Wine; the 2010 one was chosen by Ben Edwards (James Halliday’s Wine Companion) as one of the 20 greatest red wines in the world, and got five stars in Dish; and the 2013 was named one of the top 10 New Zealand wines in Wine Front magazine. Maude wines labelled Mount Maude come exclusively from the Mount Maude vineyard. The others are sourced from regions where Sarah-Kate and Dan believe they perform best. Maude

A new ‘Wanaka Influencer Programme’ has attracted applicants from around the world. Lake Wanaka Tourism (LWT) is giving people the chance to ‘live like a local’ for up to 10 weeks. Successful applicants will have their accommodation and costs of various activities around the region covered and in return these ‘influencers’ will share images and stories of their time in the region with their online fans and followers. Applications for the first round of submissions closed on Monday and the LWT team have been inundated with quality proposals from around the world. Applicants are from

Wanaka’s key markets, including Australia, UK, the US, Germany and France. LWT General Manager, James Helmore is thrilled with the response. “With Instagram being our number one social media platform, we have been working very closely with social influencers, who inspire their audiences with incredible imagery and first person stories of Wanaka,” he said. The programme comes after Johan Lolos, a photographer and social influencer from Belgium, spent six months immersed in all things Wanaka after being contracted as a photographer for Lake Wanaka Tourism. Johan listed climbing Roy’s Peak and Isthmus Peak, see-

Getting back in the saddle

SUN NEWS

Naoise Wolsey Wanaka Sun After spending the winter resting up in Wanaka, Larissa Mueller and Kendall Waugh will soon be back in the saddle to achieve their goal of circumnavigating New Zealand on horseback. Kiwis Larissa, 27, and Kendall, 25, from Horsing Around Aotearoa, are on a mission to be the first team to ride around New Zealand by following the coastline on horseback without a support crew or packhorse. The pair are fundraising for a charity called the Leg-Up Trust. Starting from their base in Hawke’s Bay, the two riders have already travelled down the Wairarapa to Wellington, across to Picton then over to Golden Bay and Farewell Spit. They then ventured south along the west coast as far as a little place called Whataroa. “We are six months and 1300km into the two-year journey and have stopped for the winter in Wanaka, working as lifties up

at Treble Cone to earn enough money to continue our adventure,” the team told The Wanaka Sun. “Come spring we will carry on south to Bluff, then up the east coast to Wellington, up the west coast to Cape Reinga, then all the way back down the east coast to finish in Hawke’s Bay.” Larissa and Kendall did not grow up around horses and have been on a steep learning curve since buying their first horse and deciding to attempt the challenge three years ago. They carry only the essentials, camping out and re-supplying in towns along the way. They estimate it will take about 18 months to complete the rest of New Zealand’s coastline. “Our main goal is to inspire other young people to follow their dreams and to get out and live life to its fullest,” said Larissa and Kendall. “Our second goal is to raise awareness and donations for our chosen charity, Leg-Up Trust. Leg-Up Trust helps disadvantaged youth with social, behavioural or

emotional problems by teaching them leadership, respect and communication through equine care and horse riding. “These young people have often suffered abuse, are at risk of suicide or are young offenders. They are given a second chance in life and develop increased

confidence, life skills and learn to communicate in a positive way.” So far Larissa and Kendall have raised just over $2000 for the trust and their goal is $20,000. The women are putting all their resources towards the mission, selling most of their possessions and sticking to a minimal budget.

They are holding a story evening and slideshow tomorrow (Friday, September 4 at 7pm) at the Wanaka Yacht Club on Lakeside Drive. Entry is free and there will be tea, coffee and home-made baked goods available for anyone who wants to come out and show their support.

Wanaka climber Dave Vass tells of recovery Continued from page 1 Ros said his rescue was amazing. ´“It was awesome they flew him out of there,” she said. “[Southern Lakes Helicopters’] Sir Richard [Hayes] is an incredible pilot. We want to thank everyone who helped rescue Dave in atrocious conditions.” Dave was in intensive care in Dunedin initially, then in Christchurch, before being moved to Burwood Spinal Unit. Dave is well known locally as a climber, diver, and skier, and for his business - Deep Canyoning which he set up with his partner Ros in 1994. “Other people got me through, especially in the first few months,” he said. “They saved my life, they got me better and they’re helping me to enjoy life. All the other Wanaka activity operators sent me a card and some money - which I used for extra therapy – it meant a lot.” Dave said coming to terms with his new life isn’t easy. “It’s good no-one offers you a little red pill in hospital,” he said. “And in some ways it’s hard coming back here. Everyone else

is so active and the mountains are right in your face. I need to find something else.” And Dave is doing just that. He is keen to do some writing and is experimenting with voice recognition software. “There’s lots I could write about. I can use a keyboard but it’s very slow. Everything takes longer.” Getting up and ready for the day takes about three hours, with assistance. Dave has plenty of rehab activities going on; physio, yoga, walking with his Zimmer frame, and he’s enjoying getting out on the tracks network in his wheelchair. While he’s found local tracks to be rougher than he imagined, he said outdoor access here is better than in Christchurch by miles. He’s already been to Glendhu Bay and says it wouldn’t take much to make the Outlet Track accessible for him. He has a sling which two people can lift him with when the wheelchair isn’t suitable, and he’s looking forward to relaxing on a beach when his new beanbag arrives. Sugar, sugar everywhere The Royal Society is hosting a lecture tomorrow (September 4) called “Sugar, Sugar Everywhere but Which One is Safe to Eat”. Auckland University Professor Peter Shepherd will endeavour to “demystify the science” behind different types of sugar in our diet. He will show how too much sugar causes problems and discuss how obesity develops and how we might address the problem. Peter Shepherd is the deputy director of the Maurice Wilkins Centre and chief organiser of the annual Queenstown Research week which is currently underway. This year organisers are endeavouring to bring some of that science to people living in the region.

Wastebusters looking for friends Wastebusters Wanaka is looking for new friends, as it turns 15. Friends of Wanaka Wastebusters chair Rachel Brown said anyone can sign up to be a ‘Friend for life’, and thus a shareholder of Wastebusters. She said the history of Wastebusters is priceless: “a story of community resourcefulness to create something that works. It has worked because of community support right from the beginning in the late 1990s and will continue to need such support.” Wastebusters used to be run by a trust, with committee members elected at an AGM. Now it is run by a company with directors, but the shares are held by ‘Friends’. The board has six to eight directors and the secretary is retiring at the end of her term. Rachel said the chair of the board is also standing down. “We are looking for people who understand how important Wastebusters is to the community and understand how it is a successful community enterprise because of the huge community support it enjoys.”

Everest movie fundraiser Caroline Harker Wanaka Sun Australian actor Sam Worthington (pictured right) plays Wanaka’s Guy Cotter in a film called Everest, which is premiering in Wanaka next week. The movie is being shown as a fundraiser for Adventure Consultants Sherpa Future Fund. It is based on the true story of a climbing disaster which occurred during a blizzard on Everest in 1996. Eight climbers lost their lives

including then Adventure Consultants CEO Rob Hall. Guy Cotter was on the scene at Base Camp and helped co-ordinate the rescue. The film is directed by Baltasar Kormakur from Iceland. Guy Cotter worked on the film as the safety adviser and location scout. He will not be at the premier as he is guiding an Adventure Consultants climbing trip in Nepal. Everest is also screening at opening night of the Venice Film Festival in mid-September.

Skaters bowled over by park revamp Naoise Wolsey Wanaka Sun Skateboarders couldn’t wait to put their skills to the test at the opening of the new bowl at the Wanaka Skatepark on Saturday. The cloverleaf shaped bowl is the main feature of stage two of the skatepark, which is in Pembroke Park. Costing $350,000, stage two of the skatepark has been constructed throughout the year. Plans are already in place for a further extension by 2019 and there are hopes for high-level competitions

at the park in the near future. Wanaka Skateboard Club spokesman and fundraiser Eddie Spearing said the original park was about 800 square metres, the extension adds another 500 square metres. The Pembroke Park Management Plan permits up to 2000 square metres, so there are still 700 square metres left for further developments. The main funders of stage two of the skatepark are the Queenstown Lakes District Council, the Central Lakes Trust and the Otago Community Trust. Wanaka Skate Club members also raised funds.

New lease and patron for Watersports Facility Trust With a new lease and a new patron, the Wanaka Watersports Facility Trust is ready for the next stage of its community project. The Queenstown Lakes District Council approved a 33-year lease for the trust to build its new community facility, on Thursday last week. And now Wanaka identity and aviation entrepreneur Sir Tim Wallis has become patron of the trust. Sir Tim became a Foundation Club member of the proposed facility last year and as a result of this support, the trust invited him to become patron. “The Wanaka Watersports Facility Trustees have an enormous amount of respect for Sir Tim. He has seen, and been a major part of, the development of Wanaka over the years – with the Warbirds over Wanaka airshow, plus

pioneering the deer recovery and local helicopter industries – so it is fitting that he is patron for such an important community asset for Wanaka’s future,” trust chairman Michael Sidey said. Sir Tim has long been an avid rowing supporter, with his son Nick Wallis being successful in the sport. Nick was part of a squad that won the Maadi Cup in 1996. “A dedicated watersports facility on the shores of Lake Wanaka is so important for locals and visitors of all ages and abilities. The facility will make it easier and safer for rowers, swimmers and kayakers to access the lake, and so enable more athletes to achieve success,” Sir Tim said. “I am honoured the trust has asked me to become patron. I believe in their vision and am just as enthusiastic as they are about making the watersports facility

Falling for Arma Del Amor

Arma Del Amor is going from strength to strength and will soon be a regular headline act, if their Sunday night performance is anything to go by. They opened for Kora at the Winter Games free concert and knocked the socks off the audience with their unique blend of soul and electronica. Martine Faircloth Harding has gone from a very talented, shy, guitar-playing schoolgirl to a sassy soulful star performer. She can sing, she can move, she can entrance an audi-

a great sound system [from Queenstown’s Tom Tom Productions],” Martine said. Martine’s soulful lyrics are poignant and full of energy: “We’re just in time you’ll see What I can do for you / As the wind blows true set my focus on you / We’re coming into view / We are your army for the fight we fire guns of love alight / This is our ammunition I’ve got you in my sight / Hear no evil none in here this is your time and your year”. Those lyrics are from solo track The Watcher. Arma Del Amor is making a video of the track with a grant from NZ

on Air. The duo will be working with Martine’s brother, videographer Piers Faircloth Harding, and expect to be finished by December. The Watcher is the first of 10 tracks on the duo’s EP which was released in July and went straight to fifth place on New Zealand music album charts. Arma Del Amor performed at the Festival of Colour in April, at the Gin and Raspberry (for their EP release in July) and at “The Find” in Queenstown on August 28, as well as before Kora in Wanaka on Sunday night. If you haven’t seen them yet, you’re missing out.

Wanaka Sun A duo called String Wizardry is performing in Cromwell (September 12) and Cardrona (September 15). String Wizardry is NZ Symphony Orchestra member Helen Webby and instrument maker Davy Stuart. They have been performing together since 2002 and are now on a South Island tour. Helen’s harp and Davy’s guitar and bouzouki are all made by Davy. They will be performing traditional Irish and Scottish music as well as contemporary compositions. “These two musicians have worked together

for years and it shows. The guitar and harp come together beautifully in these lovely Celtic tunes…[and] there is a joyous sense of originality even in the well-known melodies,” NZ Symphony Orchestra’s Carolyn Mills said. Helen Webby performs with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra as well as the NZSO, and is a recording artist for Radio New Zealand. She has won scholarships from the Netherlands government, the German Academic Exchange Service, Creative NZ and the NZSO Alex Lindsay Trust. Davy Stuart grew up in Edinburgh and

Aimee Wilson Wanaka Sun Kiwis picked up one gold and three silver medals at the Winter Games NZ, with Adam Hall (below), Janina Kuzma, Andy Pohl and Corey Peters the stars of the 10-day event. Jossi Wells received a hardearned fourth placing in the freestyle skiing slopestyle, while Brittany Hawes and Jackson Wells both came eighth in their events. Other Wanaka competitors who did well include Beau-James Wells (11th), Adam Barwood (13th), Pierra Hudson (17th) - and Finn Bilous (21st) in his first ever Winter Games. The fourth biennial Winter Games featured about 600 athletes at events at Queenstown, Wanaka and Naseby. Winter Games chief executive Arthur Klap said the next event in 2017 will have an even bigger field, as it will be only six months out from the Winter Olympics. “It will step up another level.” A new business case study commissioned by Sport New Zealand is also looking into whether Winter Games NZ should be held annually from 2017. This could ensure its placement in a new International Ski Federation (FIS) world super series, as the Asia destination. But it all came down to funding, and the study, which is due to be completed in November, will look into whether it was feasible. Arthur said it was quite a big deal to have (FIS) secretary general Sarah Lewis here watching the games this year. “It’s an incredible thing for the

WANAKA SUN

top person of FIS to come here for two days.” He said it was because of the status of the games, and the level of competition the event is getting. Meanwhile, there were a few extra surprises at the Winter Games closing ceremony at Cardrona last Sunday. Mount Aspiring College student Rosie Spearing (pictured), who has only been singing a year, performed the national anthem to the crowd. The 16-year-old’s music teacher asked if anyone in the class was keen to sing, and she was the only one to put up her hand. Mons Royale founder Hamish Acland was also at the closing ceremony to award $5,000 from ‘The Bank of Radness’ to young snowboarder JJ Rayward. The Progression Scholarship was created by the company to help young New Zealand action sports athletes on the pathway to international success. The $5,000 scholarship is to be used to fund travel to events, training camps and other activities that will contribute to an athlete’s success on the global stage. Jordan is one of New Zealand’s most prodigious young riders and is currently a member of Snow Sports NZ Snowboard talent development squad. JJ competes in both the slopestyle and halfpipe formats. A native of Nelson, the 19-yearold is based in Wanaka during the New Zealand winter, and trains at Cardrona. He was a member of the New Zealand team at the 2015 FIS Snowboard Junior World Championships in China.

The Wanaka Sun caught up with local skier Finn Bilous (15) who competed in this year’s Winter Games to find out what he thought about this year’s event. Finn has been skiing NZ mountains since the age of two. He is one of New Zealand’s most promising up-and-comers and already has a string of podium finishes at overseas competitions, in everything from halfpipe and slopestyle to big mountain, skier X and rail jam. His long-term goal is to win an Olympic gold medal in either 2018 or 2022. Q: How many events did you enter? A: “I competed in three events at the Winter Games this year; Ski Slopestyle, Halfpipe and Big Air.” Q: How did you rate your performance? A: “This was my first year competing in the games and I was fairly happy with my performance. I was stoked to

finish as the second highest placed New Zealander in the Slopestyle event. The standard was super high making it hard to qualify for finals, but it definitely made me realize what I need to do to be competitive against the world’s best.” Q: How did you rate the Games overall? A: “I thought the Games this year was a complete success. The event organizers and everyone involved did a great job. I also thought it was awesome to have the best skiers in the world in my home town and to be able to compete against them was epic. I was star struck just standing in the start gate. I almost wanted to ask some of my fellow competitors for autographs, haha!” Q: What do you think about the Winter Games being an annual event? A: “I think it would be cool! But, I also think one of the reasons why the Winter Games is unique is because it only happens once every two years, making it a bit more special when it does happens. Therefore, I would also be happy with it happening every two years.”

SUN NEWS BOOK REVIEW

CAMERA CLUB COLUMN

Courage, strength and survival

There is something quite magical about photos taken at night. Pictures of a starry or moonlit sky, dazzling neon lights, street lamps and eerie buildings are just some of the subjects that have a special something that daylight photos cannot convey. Everyday scenes take on a new dimension at night and can be transformed into moody and mysterious images through creative composition and correct exposure. One of the problems of night photography, as the adjudicator of this month’s club competition commented, is that it is easy to produce a picture with small isolated patches of bright light set in a sea of black, giving insufficient detail, making it hard for the viewer to determine what the subject is all about. The key to successful night photography lies with ensuring our camera gets enough light, and this can be achieved by using long shutter speeds. Of course the longer the shutter speed the more chance there is of blur. The use of a tripod, in conjunction with the camera’s self-timer or a remote control, will avoid ‘camera shake’, enabling us to take pin sharp pictures. Getting enough light is paramount for taking good night photos. However, if we get too much light detail will certainly be achieved, but highlights may be blown out

Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline Between 1854 and 1929, so-called ‘orphan trains’ transported more than 200,000 orphaned, abandoned and homeless children from the coastal cities of the Eastern United States to the Midwest for ‘adoption’ (in reality, often hard labour and servitude). The children had no idea where they were going. Some were welcomed by new families; others were mistreated. They lost any sense of their cultural identities and backgrounds. Many ended up feeling they didn’t belong anywhere. Some drifted from home to home to find someone who wanted them. Many ran away. Christina Baker Kline’s novel is the poignant story of two courageous women – 91-year-old Vivian (formerly Niamh, a young Irish immigrant) and 17-year-old Molly, a Penobscot Indian, who has spent her youth in and out of foster homes. As Molly (doing community service) helps Vivian sort through her possessions, we uncover the story of Vivian’s life, and a special understanding and friendship develops between the two women. Moving between present-day Maine and 1930s Minnesota, this is a story of courage, strength, resilience and survival in the face of extreme loneliness and isolation. To lose everything, over and over again, and still have the strength to begin once more – this is the memory that stays with you long after you have finished reading. Kate Sidey

and the moody atmosphere will almost certainly be lost. The perfect exposure is one that obtains enough dark areas to indicate it is night time and give the image mood, and enough light areas to enable the viewer to identify the subject. Don’t be afraid to experiment. That is half the fun of digital photography and don’t forget to check the results with the camera’s LCD (make sure the LCD brightness is set to normal, not bright, for a truer representation of the recorded image) and histogram. This allows under or over exposures to be corrected immediately. In addition to shutter speeds, play around with the aperture size of the camera. For large depth of field, where the image will be sharp from the foreground to the background, use a small aperture setting and a longer shutter speed and, for smaller depth of field, use a larger aperture and reduce the shutter speed. As a general rule, on-camera flash can prove disappointing unless your subject is close to the foreground. However, using an external flashgun can produce some amazing creative results. Many cameras allow the on-camera flash to act as a command to fire the external flash. This means we can place the external flash to illuminate an individual element within the image well

away from the camera. This was a technique used by Brent Hollow in his image ‘Celebrating Matariki First Star Rising’. Brent took the photo at Wanaka lakefront with a Nikon D800 camera, a lens with a focal length of 31mm, aperture of f4, shutter speed ¼ second and an ISO of 2000. He set up an external flash to the side of the performer, emphasising the striking colours. Brent liked the way the sombre background gave the image a moody appearance and added emphasis to the colour of the picture’s main subject. As the adjudicator said: “a remarkable image with very striking colours and technically well handled.”

EDITORIAL

A real class act It was national Random Acts of Kindness Day this week and Upper Clutha residents came out in force, displaying acts of kindness all around the region. Schoolgirls were walking the streets handing out free cupcakes, a young man paid for pensioners’ lunches with his pokies winnings, food was dropped off at the Community Networks food bank and one surprised gentleman had a generous stranger pay for his peanut butter at the checkout. And it wasn’t just Tuesday, a look at our Text Board shows that people around Wanaka have been paying it forward all week, especially the staff at Mitre 10 and PaperPlus who went the extra mile for their customers. Even the smallest of kindnesses can be enough to really brighten up someone’s day and make this a community we’re all proud to be a part of. So don’t worry if you missed out on Tuesday, get out there and buy a friend a coffee, donate to a charity or help out an elderly neighbour. Your random act of kindness can put a smile on someone’s face any day of year.

The final four And then there were four. From thousands of submissions to a shortlist of 40, the final four flag designs to go up against the current national flag were revealed on Tuesday. They’ve caused quite a stir on social media with some mixed responses on our Facebook page. While some people had firm favourites, others declared the flags “a load of rubbish”, “a waste of time and money”, and one commenter said they looked like “cheap tea towel designs”. You can’t please everybody! Which one will you be voting for?

CRIME LINE by Senior Constable Ian Henderson Spring has arrived and there is a new energy around the town. There was plenty of positive energy during the Winter Games and at Sunday night’s closing Kora concert. Police are happy to report that the crowd was generally well behaved. So here is a list of a few of the incidents local police dealt with over the last seven days: On August 27 a window of a commercial building was forced open, allowing someone to enter. The fact that the building was alarmed probably caused the person to leave in a hurry. A line of enquiry is being followed up. On August 28 the driver of a campervan traversing the Crown Range Road was spoken to in town and he was issued with an instant fine for crossing the centre line numerous times. Remember that the opposite lane belongs to oncoming traffic at all times unless you are passing. Also that day a complaint was made to police in relation to the theft of a length of concrete drainage pipe from a Loach Road, Hawea Flat address. A male was seen on a red tractor using the front mounted forks to remove the pipe from near the rear boundary. Best if that person speaks to me at the Wanaka Police Station and perhaps a good resolution can be achieved for all. On August 29 a sign outside the Night N’ Day store in Ardmore St was removed. The offender was caught on CCTV and we are reviewing that to identify the person responsible. A bike was left locked at the top of the Monley Lane steps overnight and someone has removed the front wheel and dismantled the rear wheel. Anyone with information is asked to contact local police. Also, that evening a local 21-year-old male was removed from the Water Bar and warned for trespassing. On the night of August 30, two males were processed for drink driving. One will be appearing in court while the other driver collects 50 demerit points and a $200 instant fine. On August 31 police attended a single vehicle non-injury crash on Hawea Back Road. Police ask that users of Hawea Back Road take extreme care due to the loose gravel making the road treacherous to travel on. Have a safe and enjoyable spring.

The New Zealand Snowsports Instructors Alliance (NZSIA) Interski team held its final training camp at Treble Cone this week before heading off to Argentina for Interski 2015. Interkski is a four-yearly conference which sees the world’s top snowsports instructors come together to share ideas and compare standards. Interski is the second largest winter sports event behind the Olympics and for the first time will be held in the Southern hemisphere in Ushuaia, Argentina. The 17-strong team for Interski 2015 is made up of skiers, snow-

boarders and a telemarker. The team has been training together for two years in the lead-up to the event. Interski manager Mark Cruden said: “We’re delighted to round out our training for Interski at Treble Cone. It’s a fantastic venue for our preparations. The terrain and snow conditions are exceptional and the team loves skiing and riding here.” Interski runs from September 5-12. Treble Cone will be represented within the NZ Interski team by Treble Cone snow sports instructor and coach Jon Ahlsen and the Treble Cone located Rookie Academy’s Garret Shore and Richie Johnston. Big win for adventure racers The GODZone adventure racing team from Central Otago has won the 2015 Primal Quest expedition race that took place in Lake Tahoe, USA last week. The highly experienced team is made up of Wanaka’s Sarah Fairmaid, her sister Sonya Clark, former World Champion adventure racer Warren Bates and his partner Lisa Bates (pictured). The eight-day Primal Quest expedition started on August 19 and GODZone team captain Warren Bates said the course was extremely challenging but an exciting adventure from the get go. “That’s just about as tough as it gets in adventure

racing. Primal Quest races have always been hard and this was no exception. The team is delighted to come through with the win. We stuck to our plan of looking after ourselves as best as possible, making no mistakes strategically or navigationally and it paid off over the seven days we were out on the course.” The massive Primal Quest course traversed over 450 miles in and around Lake Tahoe with 66,000ft of ascent. This race involved trekking, climbing, kayaking, white-water rafting and mountain biking. WANAKA SUN

Great result for netball team

Rugby players picked for Otago squads

The Wanaka Primary School Year 6 representative netball team competed against 29 other Year 6 teams from the Otago region at the Edgar Centre, Dunedin, last week. They played seven games, winning their pool and losing only one game in the semi-finals to finish fifth overall. The team was led by coach Sandra Findlay who was delighted with the girls’ performance and travelled with referee Erina Tamati. Pictured: Netballers (back, from left) Ma’nea Apa, Jamie Kerr, Isabelle Fitzgerald, Emily Findlay, Neve Faed, (front, from left) referee Erina Tamati, Ruby Boyd, Samara Goodall, Scarlett Norman, Kate Harry and coach Sandra Findlay.

Five Wanaka rugby players have been selected to play for the Otago Under 65kg and Under 48kg teams this year. The Under 65kg team were presented with their Otago kit at a dinner in Dunedin on Friday night. The boys had a game against Southland at the Pirates Rugby Ground in Dunedin on Saturday.
