ueenstown-based developer John Darby is pushing ahead with plans to open a commercial skifield in the Soho Basin, next to Cardrona. Two ‘Certificate of Compliance’ applications were lodged with the Queenstown Lakes District Council on August 25, and outline plans for access into Soho to build a chairlift. coe Station Limited – another of Darby’s companies, by the council in January. He has been unavailable since then to talk about his plans for a 1.2km-long, high-speed, six-person lift. The Soho Ski Area is located within the northern end of Glencoe Station and adjoins the eastern side of the existing Cardrona Alpine Resort. Darby is also a majority shareholder of Treble Cone, and in his recent application, there are plans

to build new structures - servicing infrastructure, both there and at Soho. Treble Cone had a rough start to this season, struggling with burst pipes needed for snowmaking, but luckily there has been enough natural snow to not affect operations. Former Queenstown skifield manager Hamish McCrostie has already started the Soho operation, with his backcountry ski venture using snowgroomers, which has been running since July.

There was speculation in January about whether Real Journeys, which owns Cardrona, was going to be involved in Soho – or whether it would be a stand-alone project. Darby Partners is a Queenstown-based company specialising in property development and resort projects in NZ, Asia and the Pacific. John Darby is a registered landscape architect and resort planner. He and his company have played a major role in a number of high profile, large-scale tourism projects. Development value of these projects now exceeds NZ$2 billion dollars. They include award-winning projects such as Millbrook Resort, Steamer Wharf Village (Queenstown); Denarau Island Resort (Fiji); Omaha Beach; Clearwater Resort (Christchurch); Jacks Point Resort, Wyuna Station, Blanket Bay Lodge, and Amisfield Winery (Queenstown).

Queenstown Lakes District Council has urged the people of Wanaka to step up and show compassion for refugees fleeing wartorn Syria. It was announced this week that New Zealand would open its doors to an extra 750 Syrian refugees over the next three years after coming under intense pressure to respond to

the humanitarian crisis in Europe. In a statement issued to The Wanaka Sun yesterday, QLDC said that, in step with the rest of the world, the community of the Queenstown Lakes District is showing its compassion for the people of Syria. “The people of our district have opened their doors and hearts in the past to those fleeing the situation in Canterbury

and the council has no doubt the same generosity will be extended to the Syrian refugees if the opportunity arises,” QLDC said. “The Ministry of Immigration has confirmed the first intake will be settled in Wellington, where there is already a strong Syrian population. Although QLDC is not one of the five settlement locations in New Zealand, there are other opportunities for

our community to step up, including fundraising initiatives. “Donations of both money and small household goods, offers of employment and housing stock can all be registered online with key response organisations including Red Cross, World Vision and Unicef.” The council has placed a link to these organisations on its website www.qldc.govt.nz.

Fire lays waste to Alexandra depot Caroline Harker Wanaka Sun Wanaka Wastebusters staff have rallied to support those working at Wastebusters in Alexandra after a fire destroyed the re-use shop, portacom office and recycling plant there last week. Bad news turned to worse early this week when police revealed the fire was arson and an accelerant had been used. Police are still investigating, and would like to hear from anyone with any information. Meanwhile Wastebusters’ insurance broker has said the company has full cover, and most services at the Alexandra depot are already operating again. “The staff were devastated but everyone is feeling much better now they are allowed back on site and can get on with their work,” said Wastebusters communications manager Gina Dempster. Wanaka Wastebusters (WW) took over the 15-year-old Alexandra operation in July this year and general manager Sue Coutts has

PAGE 2

spent most of her time since then in Alexandra getting the operation running efficiently again. Gina Dempster said while Sue’s work in the re-use shop had gone up in smoke, most of her work had been with the seven staff, developing a team culture (after redundancies earlier this year), and this was paying off in the aftermath of the fire. WW recycling manager Jeremy Bisson (pictured) took a truck from Wanaka down to Alexandra earlier this week to ensure the business recycling operation got back on track as soon as possible. While the five trucks at the Alexandra depot were not damaged in the fire, their keys which were in the portacom office were destroyed, and a locksmith has provided new keys. Business recycling is now operating as usual and the public drop-off facility will be open by tomorrow (Friday September 11). Staff are looking at using some shipping containers which were already on site as temporary shop premises, however this won’t be operational for several weeks. “We don’t want to open the shop until the

site is safe again,” Gina said. “Investigators say the old shop will have to be demolished. In the meantime the best thing the public can do to help is donate items for the new temporary shop. Everything in the old shop was lost.” Fortunately recycling materials in the yard were not damaged by the fire. The Alexandra operation had two presses and while one was destroyed the other was not damaged and is already being used again to bale the recycling materials. Gina said a decision regarding a new permanent re-use shop had not been made yet, however it was likely to be at the existing site in Boundary Road as it was a good location with plenty space.

Rhythm and Alps supported Continued from page 1 WW general manager Sue Coutts said the company would need last year’s bill paid and a substantial deposit before it could commit to taking on recycling at this year’s festival. WW communications manager Gina Dempster said Alex Turnbull had arranged to pay the bill in instalments. “We have no reason to think this won’t happen,” she said. Lane Hoskings said having R&A on his property has been a great experience. “I’ve developed a strong rapport and respect for Alex. We’ve got a great working relationship and I’m looking forward to the next festival.” Other creditors, including

2013 and 2014 event manager Chris Gillies and site manager Chud Cunningham, are confident Alex is a good man who will pay his debts and make the festival a big success for Wanaka if he possibly can. Support from the community will be essential. “Alex is determined to build and grow the festival,” Chris said. “That would be great for Wanaka. He needs to sell enough tickets to clear debts from last year. I think he can do that.” “R&A is a great local festival and it brings a lot of money into the economy,” Chud said. “This year’s line-up is the best yet according to my son Ben [local DJ]. Alex has moved to Wanaka and has his roots in the ground. It looks pretty certain [all creditors] will get paid.”

Meanwhile R&A early bird tickets ($129) are nearly sold out. Big names in the 2015 line-up include British house and techno DJ Carl Cox, Australian party rock band Sticky Fingers, American rapper and hip hop artist Chali 2na, award-winning Melbourne rapper Remi and internationally-renowned Kiwi glitch artist Opiuo. Local stars Arma Del Amor will play the main stage. Earlier this year Alex bought R&A from the Rhythm Group – which also owned Gisborne’s Rhythm and Vines – and went out on his own, taking on the festival’s debts of several hundred thousand dollars. “Last year was tough on Rhythm and Alps as an event, it’s the nature of this business and

I have learnt an immense amount in the last few months to get this festival back on the right track,” he said. “I think it comes down to the local community – without their support

through this difficult patch it would have been extremely challenging to run again for 2015. That needs to be respected and it is quite humbling to see this spirit in the south.”

Ultra-fast broadband in pipelines Wanaka and Hawea could be next in line for ultra-fast broadband. Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean said she was delighted that several towns in the Central Otago area were being considered for the Government’s plans to expand the network. “Wanaka, Lake Hawea, Alexandra, Cromwell and Clyde are among about 110 towns identified as potential areas for inclusion for UFB extension. “The long list of potential towns and communities is based on projected population size to 2023 and has been supported by the submissions made by territorial authorities during the Registrations of Interest process,” she said. “The bids will now be assessed, town-by-town, on a commercial basis, and a short-list of towns will be determined from that analysis. Then commercial negotiations can begin.”

Rotary club members are expecting this year’s annual book sale to be the biggest ever. It’s being held at the Lake Wanaka Centre on October 2-4 and there are collection boxes for donated books at Mitre 10. Club director of public relations Fran Tate said the sale is a huge community effort with thousands of quality books donated by residents. Upper Clutha Transport stores the books, Wanaka New World provides boxes and the council has allowed the club to use the Lake Wanaka Centre free of charge. “And a special mention must go to Stonewood Homes which has once again given us a cash donation of $2000,” Fran said. “Rotary stalwarts Lois Haynes and Pam Brown (pictured), Peter Harridge, Doug Lovell and a team of others have already been sorting and pricing for weeks.” Authors’ names sighted among the books include teen fiction favourite John Marsden, children’s authors Adam Blade and Horowitz and the ever-popular Nesbo and Simsion for adults. With four weeks to go the club is still keen to receive donated books. All proceeds from the sale will go to local community projects. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

COMMUNITYNETWORKS COLUMN

The value of reaching out and making connections One person can make a huge difference by reaching out and connecting with someone. This is the message of Community Networks’ upcoming workshop on suicide alertness and prevention. Too often we find ourselves isolated, with friends and family overloaded with the demands of day-to-day living, so it can be a simple, positive interaction with any member of the community that makes all the difference. Something as small as a smile or a nod, a cheery greeting from a shopkeeper or taking the time to ask a question could help. There is a lack of community awareness surrounding suicide, and in particular how frequently it occurs. International studies conservatively estimate that 7% of

people will have thoughts of suicide in any year - one in 17 New Zealanders. People who believe that suicide is abnormal and rare are not prepared should they, or someone they interact with, have suicidal thoughts. Community Networks’ workshop combats that misconception and will help people to understand the simple things that they can do to make a difference in the community. Community Networks is running the suicide alertness workshop on Wednesday 14 October 2015 from 6 - 9:30pm, and you can contact Community Networks Wanaka on 443 7799 or info@communitynetworks.co.nz for more information.

Kevin’s making a difference Local southern man Kevin Harris features on a website which encourages “baby boomers” to connect with younger generations, for the good of their mental health. Boomers.org is a Mental Health Foundation website which advises older people to: connect, give, take notice, keep learning and be active. Kevin features with seven other people who are all helping out younger generations, be they relatives, friends or strangers. His story (which follows) was written by former Wanaka Sun journalist Maddy Harker. Skiing and snowboarding are usually seen as sports for the affluent, the athletic and the able. But the adaptive snow sports programme at Cardrona, which has existed there for many years, ensures people with physical or intellectual disabilities can experience the joy of snow sports. As a keen skier for most of his 57 years, Kevin (Kev) Harris uses his expertise in the snow to help others. He has been a volunteer in the adaptive programme for the last eight winters. Kev’s a man of few words who lives in Wanaka with his wife, his two children having flown the nest. He won’t tell you this himself, but he has made a huge difference to people’s lives. “He’s amazing,” says Cardrona’s

adaptive programme co-ordinator, Jane Stevens. “Kev has this down-to-earth attitude that makes people comfortable, and he’s built up great relationships with the skiers over time. “We do develop a really good rapport with our regulars,” says Kev. “Hugh’s a good example.” Hugh Brown is 28 and lives in Dunedin. He likes skiing, swimming and horse riding – and he has Down syndrome. For the last 12 years Hugh has been coming to the adaptive programme. While Hugh loves to ski, says Kev, he’s getting slower with time, so he’s trying out a sit-ski to see if it makes things easier. Kev straps Hugh into a small bucket seat attached to a specially designed ski underneath. “Are you nervous?” he asks. A defiant shake of the head says no. Sit-skiing is a team effort. Hugh is in charge of the outriggers, which Kev instructs him to use like ski poles, while Kev skis behind him, holding tethers attached to the sit-ski. These allow Kev to help Hugh turn, stop and avoid obstacles while he is learning. Eventually Hugh should be able to ski without help. “Are you comfortable Hugh? All you’re missing there is a TV.” “And a beer!” Hugh retorts.

PHOTO: CAROLINE HARKER

The first run is over in a few minutes. Kev is impressed. “You’re not bad are you? Better than some of the volunteers when they first try, actually.” “Ha!” says Hugh, pleased with himself. They continue to tease each other. It’s clear they enjoy each other’s company. The adaptive programme at Cardrona was made possible through volunteers like Kev. “I don’t know if it’s the small town factor

or what exactly,” Jane says, “but we have fantastic volunteers here. There are a lot of older people with the time and skills to make a difference.” Kev is as keen as ever, volunteering up Cardrona every weekend and weekdays, too, if he has the time. “Just last weekend I taught kids whose families never dreamt their children would ever be able to ski,” he says. “It’s all worth it when you see the smiles on the kids’ faces.”

Guests warm up at winter soiree A hundred guests danced the night away at Rippon Hall on Saturday at a special Grand Winter Soiree. “It’s been a long cold winter in Wanaka and this was an opportunity for the locals to shake off the winter blues, strip off their merino and puffer layers and get glammed up for a big event,” said Kristi James of The A Team. The black-tie evening featured seven courses of small plates by celebrity chef Bevan Smith of Riverstone Kitchen fame, and the 18 piece Queenstown Jazz Orchestra.

Give a special gift this Christmas Naoise Wolsey Wanaka Sun It may seem a bit early to be thinking about Christmas, but it’s never too soon to help people in need. Wanaka New Life Church is organising a local effort for Operation Christmas Child – an initiative where people can fill a shoebox with presents that are then distributed in poor nations around the world such as Vietnam, Cambodia and Papua New Guinea. This year Operation Christmas Child representatives are planning to handdeliver 340,000 boxes in seven nations. Last year the church made up 20 boxes, and this year it has ordered 200 boxes for Wanaka to fill. Wanaka New Life Church representative Lisa Cartlidge is organising the local effort and says filling a box is a very rewarding thing to do. “The exciting thing is being able to bring joy to a child, who otherwise would never get gifts at Christmas

time,” she said. “It has a long-lasting impact on these children – you watch them opening their boxes on the Christmas Child website – and their overwhelming excitement over receiving small gifts like crayons is amazing.” Wanaka Primary School and Holy Family Catholic School have come on board the project and are filling two boxes per classroom. Wanaka Primary School Teacher Clair Winslade said the project teaches students to develop a social consciousness of the world around them. “Children are learning the value and importance of giving to others less fortunate than themselves. The response from the school community has been wonderful with over 45 boxes being distributed, throughout the school,” she says. This year Mitre 10 will be the pick-up and drop-off point for the boxes, which need to be filled and dropped back by October 19.

This months contribution comes from Peter Humphrey our expert on Kiwisaver. The uptake of KiwiSaver has grown considerably since its inception in July 2007. There are now over 2.5 million members currently enrolled in the scheme. Having a closer look into the opportunities on offer with KiwiSaver could certainly prove well worthwhile. Member tax credits and employer contributions are a sure way to give your retirement savings a boost. The annual member tax credit incentive, currently set at $521.43 (equivalent to $10 per week), is credited to qualifying members’ accounts in one lump sum shortly after 30 June each year. To receive it in full, the KiwiSaver member must be aged between 18 and 65, and have contributed the prescribed minimum value during the preceding year (currently $1042.86 or $20 per week). KiwiSaver’s incentives and benefits are by no means exclusive to salary and wage earners. You are eligible to join if you are New Zealand citizen or are permitted to live here indefinitely. Voluntary contributions or top-ups can be made by any eligible person, regardless of their employment status. Making a voluntary payment to your KiwiSaver scheme via online banking couldn’t be easier. The option can usually be found located in the “tax payments” section of your bank’s internet banking main page. Details required include the tax type (KSS – KiwiSaver Member Account) and your personal IRD number. You could, for

example, set up monthly payments of $87 – and that would be just enough to net you the full member tax credit each year. We recommend as a minimum people contribute the $87 per month as the payback at age 65 of $43.50 per month is a very good return. This is without considering any return on the funds invested. During these times of rocketing house prices, there are significant potential benefits available to first-home buyers. In order to unlock these benefits, a member must have made regular minimum contributions for at least three years. The government will provide a subsidy of $1K for each contributing year, up to a maximum of $5K for five years. Certain other criteria must be met, including prescribed house price caps (currently a maximum value of $450K applies for the Queenstown-Lakes region), annual income maximum thresholds ($80K for an individual or $120K for a household). Limitations surrounding minimum deposit savings and the member’s current net realisable assets are also applicable. The prospective property must also be your primary place of residence (not an investment property), and held for at least six months from the date of purchase. In an attempt to stimulate the housing supply side, the government has recently introduced an amendment to double the maximum available subsidy to $10K per member to those who are building a new home, or buying a property off the plans. Alongside the subsidy application process, eligible members typically opt to have their KiwiSaver funds withdrawn to

go towards their first home deposit (excluding the first $1K in their member accounts). All of the above benefits double under the scenario of a couple seeking to buy their first home, who are both eligible KiwiSaver members and regular contributors to a scheme. Needless to say that with just a little foresight and planning, your KiwiSaver membership could pay off considerably and help get you onto the property ladder. A common misconception I have heard many times is that KiwiSaver members’ funds are held by the government and are therefore susceptible to the negative effects of parliamentary whims or major shifts in the political landscape. Yes, your contributions do initially go to the IRD, but in actuality, members’ funds are managed and held by independent non-governmental organisations. Although access is restricted, the funds still remain the property of the KiwiSaver member investor. That notwithstanding, there has been in the past and it appears likely to continue into the future government tinkering of incentives and operational features of the scheme (such as contribution percentages, annual tax credits, employer contributions and associated tax deductions, and the recently abolished “Kick Start” incentive). Lastly a disclaimer; the provision of financial advice is outside the scope of this article and I encourage KiwiSaver members to consult with

New station hits airwaves Naoise Wolsey Wanaka Sun There’s a new radio station making waves in Wanaka. The Sound, part of the independent broadcasting company MediaWorks, was launched last Thursday (September 3) on 93.8FM. The Sound was already on air in other parts of the country such as Queenstown and, according to Rick Van Dijk, the general manager of MediaWorks Queenstown and Central Lakes, there was a big demand to bring the station to Wanaka. “We had huge interest in the station from locals asking when it was going to be broadcast in Wanaka. There were tradies who used to drive up the Crown Range at lunchtime just so they could listen to it while they were eating their sandwiches,” said Rick. The Sound has had a good reception so far and Rick feels it will compete well with Wanaka’s other radio offerings. “We’ve had some great feedback from Wanaka locals. The Sound offers something new. It’s all about the greatest music ever made, so bands like Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Fleetwood Mac, The Rolling Stones, The Eagles. It’s about music that sparks good memories,” said Rick.

The tour, which starts in Wellington tonight, sees these top artists take to the stage together for the first time as a three piece. They will also be mentoring a group of young students from Cromwell and Queenstown, who will be performing a short support set before the Wanaka gig. “I’m really looking forward to working with the students,” Anna told The Wanaka Sun. “I’ve done this kind of work before and the level of talent students have now is crazy. It’s way beyond what I was like at their age.” Lynne Christie, who is co-ordinating

the workshop, said it was a great opportunity for the students. “They will get guidance in song-writing and performance, some training and tutoring in vocals and audio work and then they will get to sound-check with Lips and Anna Coddington as well as performing a support set,” said Lynne. “The students will bring along any instruments they have and we can work through parts of their original songs and see what we come up with on the day. These students are already very committed so it’s great for them to get to connect with professionals.” Anna Coddington’s live performances and songwriting have seen the Raglanborn Aucklander tour New Zealand on multiple occasions and make the Top 20 list for the Silver Scroll Award four times. Lips is the musical project of Auckland-

born Stephanie Brown and West Virginia native Fen Ikner. The duo, who originally formed in New York, now split their time between New Zealand and Brooklyn, NY, and have been awarded the Silver Scroll for their song ‘Everything To Me’. Audiences can expect to hear songs from their back catalogues, as well as new unheard material from both of their upcoming projects. “I can’t wait for the tour to start. It’s going to be a really dynamic show,” said Anna. “We’ve learnt each other’s songs and will be performing my songs and Lips songs mostly as a trio, with a few cover songs and solo songs too.” Anna Coddington and Lips play the Gin and Raspberry on September 20. Tickets, as well as two free single downloads, are available from Eventfinda.

New Zealand Fashion Week - that ‘70s vibe!

Get your Spring Wardrobe!

Trudie Millar After an incredible five days at New Zealand Fashion Week - with countless designer runway shows, being ‘snapped’ by photographers and meeting like-minded fashionistas - I was truly on a high. Forget about comfortable shoes, eating and sleeping. Dressing for the day and fashion was all I could live and breathe, and I was not complaining. Not only was ‘The Runway’ a feast for the eyes, but those attending the shows were worth watching too. Bloggers and buyers, celebrities and fashion editors were immaculately styled from head to toe. It was my opportunity to be inspired and to observe all that surrounded me. Some highlights were the use of neutral colours such as shades of beige and blush (know the right shade for your complexion though), mesh, sequins, lace, cape tops, trench inspired dresses and jackets, high-waisted skirts with ties, stripes and fun patterns to name a few. Not to mention the ‘stage dive’ by Stolen Girlfriends Club model at the St James Theatre. What a show. With my love for style through the ages, I was delighted to see a strong ’70s theme continuing. Flares are back and have hit the stores in volumes this spring. Wearing flares is all about how you interpret the look. Be sure to make it contemporary with your styling. Instead of your

usual skinny leg jeans, loosen up a little. Flares are like a pant that skims over your waist and glides down the leg. They are best worn with a high heel or boot and make sure the hem skims the floor but doesn’t sweep it! Team with a simple tee or a lightweight knit that sits on your hips. Most flare cuts have a high waist, but if you have curvy hips opt for a style that sits below the belly button, this will help balance the leg out. Flared pants come in different styles such as wide leg, palazzo, bell bottoms, bootcut and trouser pants. Interpreting what you see on the catwalk is about breaking down the trends you love and applying it to your wardrobe. Pick and choose elements that catch your eye and look for garments that follow that inspiration. This way your style will stay current, forward thinking, adventurous, confident and true to you! Beanies wanted in Bannockburn Organisers of Across the Bridge at Bannockburn have put out a call for entries for the Bannie Beanie Awards. They want people to create beanies (brimless caps) which celebrate the essence of Central. Entries must be handmade, warm and wearable – but not necessarily practical. Judges will be looking for a sense of humour, creativity and originality in both ideas and choice of material, quality of workmanship, and a connection between the theme (essence of Central) and the finished product.

Beanies must be accompanied by a title, and a story about the beanie and its creator(s). Entries close on September 25. Beanies will be on display at the Bannockburn Hall on October 3-4 (10.30am – 4pm) during Across the Bridge at Bannockburn – which also includes an art exhibition, a rabbit pie competition, a crafts and produce market, a car boot sale, wine tastings at local wineries and more. Students take stand against cyber bullying

Young artists to hold exhibition Naoise Wolsey Wanaka Sun Mount Aspiring College Level 2 and 3 Visual Art students will be putting their artwork on display for all to see. The exhibition will take place in the college foyer on Wednesday, September 23, from 5pm to 6pm. There will be examples of photography, painting and design on display. The images are digital inkjet copies of work that will inform their NCEA portfolios due in term four. The students have been working on their portfolios since mid-

year and the work reflects their interests thematically, conceptually and technically. All or the art is on sale (unframed) with 75% of the money going directly back to the students. “Selling work gives the students a real life experience of what it is like to be professional artists and shows that their work not only has value in the exam context but can also be appreciated and valued in a wider context,” said MAC Arts Co-ordinator Jools Hall. “Students get real satisfaction knowing that people are willing to pay money for their art.”

Sticks N’ Stones member Stirling Deaton with Nigel Latta

Mount Aspiring College’s Sticks N’ Stones group have been asked to feature in a television series with New Zealand author and psychologist Nigel Latta after they made a stand against cyber bullying. The group travelled to Cromwell to attend The Modern Family Survival Guide event, which had a focus on digital communication and cyber bullying, and made a presentation to over 300 people, including Nigel Latta who was the main speaker. The group also took part in an event in association with Facebook and Project Rockit, Australia, aimed at showing social media users that online is real life and that it can have a massive effect on people if it is misused. They learned about promoting cyber safety and how to stand up to people online using positive actions. The students are planning a community event for Wanaka next term where they will “spread a little kindness”.

EDITORIAL Could Wanaka be a safe haven for refugees? When we posted a story to our Facebook page about the government’s recent pledge New Zealand would take in an extra 750 refugees who have fled from the conflict in Syria, one commenter noted that there are “plenty of empty dwellings” in Wanaka. Globally, the Scottish first minister, Finnish prime minister and musician Bob Geldof have offered their homes up to asylum seekers, and the Pope has even offered up some space in the Vatican. More locally, Dunedin has offered to open its doors to Syrian refugees, but Mayor Dave Cull says the city would need an influx of government funding first in order to provide the community with the proper resources to do so. But what about Wanaka? Would you welcome refugees to our town? What resources would we need to make coming here a long-term success for refugees?

GREBE DIARY Retired zoologist John Darby keeps us up to date on the latest grebe hatchings at Lake Wanaka.

TEXT THE WANAKA SUN

Grebes do things the hard way! Females begin to incubate the first egg as soon as it is laid which means that eggs hatch at two-daily intervals. With a clutch of four eggs, it can take more than a week to complete hatching. As each chick is hatched it climbs onto its parent’s back and snuggles under the wings of the nesting bird. As soon as all the eggs have hatched, parents abandon the nest and chicks are piggybacked by the parents for the first 2-3 weeks of life. All the nests on the Marina have been numbered and nest 2 with 4 eggs hatched its first chick on Saturday evening. The best time to see the chicks is when parents are feeding them. Nest 4 is due next week.

Stop petty politics It is sad that the current debate over the new New Zealand flag has degenerated into a political football. We are talking about our multi-cultural nation here so it should be above cheap politics. Taking a positive outlook I believe it is well overdue for the nation to have a new flag for several reasons. Firstly, we are no longer part of Great Britain so we should not be flying the Union Jack. Secondly, our flag is far too similar to Australia’s so we need a distinctive NZ flag. A recent survey was done in the US showing 100 people the NZ flag and asking which country’s flag it was. Virtually all those asked said “Oh that’s the Australian flag”. The only person who got it right was an NZer. Thirdly, both our soldiers and the All Blacks, among others who have represented NZ, wear or wore the silver fern. Fourthly, at several important functions overseas our people have had to put up with the confusion and have an Australian flag displayed instead of the correct NZ flag thus causing embarrassment to all concerned. Finally, we do not want any part or association with the black flag of Isil so we cannot use black. So it seems obvious to me that we should have a new flag and the red option by Kyle Lockwood seems to me to be the best option of the final four chosen by a selected panel of well-known and respected NZers so let’s get in behind them and accept that a new flag for our nation is long overdue. Get real and stop the petty politics. Andrew Burton Lowburn, Central Otago

CRIME LINE Drink drivers warned by Senior Sergeant Allan Grindell This week most of our work revolved around Road Policing activities. We attended two crashes, one at Hawea Flat where a vehicle lost control on a freshly graded gravel road, the other a head-on crash on the Albert Town Bridge. Thankfully there were no life threatening injuries in either crash. There were 4 drivers processed for drink driving this week. With the 3 last week that makes 7 in a fortnight. Three of the drivers from this week are off to court; the other was dealt with by Infringement Notice. It appears the message has stopped getting through and we need to put more of a focus on this aspect of Road Safety. So please, be aware if you are driving over the next few weeks expect to be breath tested. A wee reminder to those of you under 20, the level for alcohol is zero. Lastly thumbs up to the sensible young man who passed his keys to one of our constables to stop his associates drinking and driving. Over the last couple of weeks we have been running checkpoint during the day checking on seat belts and vehicle condition. I am pleased to say almost everyone is wearing their seat belts. What we have noticed is the number of vehicles with expired Diesel mileage. Keep an eye on this please. During the early hours of Thursday morning a lone male has entered two rooms at the Moorings apartments. The occupants were awoken and when confronted the male has left. We presently are viewing CCTV footage in an attempt to identify this male. Nothing was stolen and no threats were made so we are unsure of his motive. He may have just been under the influence of drink or drug and lost. The victims are shocked and worried by this. Although Wanaka is one of the safest places in the world we still need to take basic precautions to avoid becoming victims of crime. Please lock your doors, both in buildings and cars. There were 3 reports of damage over the week; a letter box, car window, and shop window were damaged. Have a good week.

Aimee Wilson Wanaka Sun The Hawea Flat School Track is due to open next term, but there doesn’t seem to be interest in a cycle train – yet. Organiser Kirsty Barr put out a survey to parents gauging interest in the train over a month ago, with the idea being families could ride to school together. But so far she has only received a handful of responses. “We would love to hear from any interested families. Even if you personally can’t help but your children are keen, even if children can only manage a one-way journey

that’s fine too, even if you’re unsure and want to decide later – still do the quick survey and let us know your situation,” she said. The track was made possible thanks to the hard work of the Upper Clutha Tracks Trust, with support from Otago Community Trust, local landowner Craig Laing, QLDC, and the school community. An opening day for the track has yet to be confirmed, and Kirsty is also looking for people interested in taking part. The deadline for the online survey of the cycle train is this Friday (September 11). Contact her on kirstybarr1@gmail.com.

Freestyle Kayak World Champs

Max Rayner performs an airscrew at the world champs.

Caroline Harker Wanaka Sun Two kayakers who trained on waves at the Hawea Whitewater Park have just competed in the Freestyle Kayak World Championships in Canada. Freestyle kayaking focuses on surfing waves and competitors earn points based on the difficulty of tricks done during a 45-second timeslot. Max Rayner, 18, and Jeremy Norbury, 17, have spent a lot of time at the Hawea park since it opened in December 2012. They are both Central Otago Whitewater Club members from Alexandra. “During the summer Max was coached [at the Hawea wave] by the then women’s freestyle world champion from the United Kingdom – Claire O’Hara,” said his father Gordon Rayner. “He trained there for the world champs throughout June too, when it was very cold.” Max placed 46th in a field of 80 and was very happy with his result. His

goal now is to make the top 20, he said. The competition was held on the Ottawa River in eastern Canada. “We competed on the extremely fast and powerful Garberator wave, which provided big aerial tricks such as airscrews, blunts, panamas and helixes,” Max said. Two grandstands were built on site for the competition as well as a judging platform. “The grandstands held up to 350 people and were packed most days,” Max said. “It was crazy seeing the riverbanks like this, as the Ottawa is normally an isolated and pristine river. There was even a wire running across the river holding up the 28 flags of the different countries competing. It felt like kayaking in a stadium and was really enjoyable.” Central Otago Whitewater will be running a junior whitewater kayaking coaching programme at the Hawea Whitewater Park beginning in mid-October.

Cyclist unfazed by crash Wanaka Cyclist Phoebe Young (right) competing in the NZSS Road Cycling Championships.

Naoise Wolsey Wanaka Sun It takes more than a nasty crash to keep Wanaka cyclist Phoebe Young from crossing the finish line, as she proved at last weekend’s New Zealand Secondary School Individual Road Cycling Championships in Auckland. After placing first in the time trial and third in the hill climb races, the 14-year-old was in a good position to place second overall until a bad crash put her position in jeopardy.

However, the MAC student still managed to hobble across the finish line, carrying her broken bike to place third in the overall general classification and an impressive joint-second on results. “I had a crash about 10 metres from the end,” said Phoebe. “When it happened the first thing that went through my head was ‘where is my bike? I have to finish before the others’.” Phoebe regularly trains around Wanaka and often

competes in cycling and triathlon events. “I got into mountain biking with my dad and my brother, and then later I got more into road biking and triathlon,” said Phoebe. “I train a lot around Wanaka. Sometimes we go up the Crown Range or up to Treble Cone. We try and use the mountains and the environment we’ve got here.” Phoebe’s next event will be the 2015 Yunca Junior Cycle of Southland in October.

Special Olympics Winter Games at Cardrona Caroline Harker Wanaka Sun The 7th Special Olympics New Zealand National Winter Games finish at Cardrona tomorrow (Friday Spetember 11). There are 48 athletes competing and 26 coaches in attendance. The event is part of the competition pathway for athletes wanting to attend the Special Olympics World Winter Games which will be held in Austria in March 2017.

“Our athletes have trained extremely hard to prepare for these games,” Special Olympics New Zealand CEO Kathy Gibson said. “The volunteer commitment has been immense. Our winter sports programme is like a family and the camaraderie between athletes and volunteers is just amazing.” On Tuesday morning athletes and coaches gathered in the courtyard at Cardona for the arrival of the official “Flame of Hope” to mark the commence-

ment of the Games. Representing the NZ Police, Senior Constables Lyn Donaldson and Dave Cowie, assisted by Global Messenger Craig Torrance (Special Olympics Otago) completed the final leg of the Law Enforcement Torch Run to rousing applause. The “Flame of Hope” was lit by Kathy Gibson. On opening day a number of athletes achieved personal bests and were moved up to higher divisions. Final competition results will be available on the Special Olympics website.

Gymnasts raise the bar

Five members of Aspiring Gymsports competed in the South Island Champs this week. Four of the gymnasts were representing Wanaka (Isabella Soper, Emma Smith, Isabelle Fitzgerald and Zelda Boyd) and one was competing for Queenstown (Sophie Stalker). This was only their second year competing as a club. All of the girls enjoyed the competition and the stand-out performance was from Isabella Soper who came sixth overall with a score of 53.636, which has qualified her to move up to the next level of competition next season. Sophie Stalker also achieved a great result with a score of 51.007 which is a qualifying score to get her to the next level. PHOTO:SUPPLIED

Staff Reporter Wanaka Sun The 2015 Freeski Open of New Zealand wrapped up in spectacular style last Friday at the Remarkables, with Wanaka skiers and riders taking placings. Hank Bilous, who placed second in the 2014 event, said he watched the qualifiers “and I knew it would be go all out or go home, especially with the new snow.” Maria Kuzma (pictured) won the female snowboarding section while Canadian Kai White was the winner of the men’s. The men’s ski category provided the day’s

finale, each rider looking to push the standard to the next level and make the judging call ever harder. Sébastien Varlet of France, a regular on the finals start list at the Freeski Open took the win. Second place finisher Sam Lee, of Wanaka, impressed the judges by skiing some of the most technical sections of the venue including the challenging waterfall drop. “I wanted to do something I hadn’t done before, get into some new terrain and take a creative approach. I’m stoked with how it went.” Hank Bilous took 3rd while Blake Marshall - the top qualifier - narrowly missed the podium, finishing in 4th.
