While Paul is probably best known as a long-time participant in Stars in Your Eyes, or as one of the smiling helpful staff at Mitre 10, these are just two of the many roles he plays in the community. Currently on the Mount Aspiring College Board of Trustees, Paul was on the Wanaka Primary School board from 2006-2012. He coordinates the hangi as part of

The organisation is now called Aspiring Young Musicians and has 20 brass instruments, numerous ukuleles, guitars and keyboards. Paul said of all the things he’s involved with, the organisation he’s most proud of is the A&P Society. “It’s such a wonderful show. (As a marshall) I place everyone who comes in. Cardrona closes curtain on successful snowy ski season PHOTO:SUPPLIED

Naoise Wolsey Wanaka Sun Finishing the longest ski season in the South Island, Cardrona celebrated with half price lift tickets, a Fashion in the Field catwalk event and the usual crazy closing day antics as skiers and snowboarders slid around in the spring slush. There was a festive atmosphere in the courtyard as music blasted and fashionistas of all ages strutted down the catwalk in their finery. There was an array of outstanding dress-ups that included seventies ski suits,

Paul honoured by award Continued from page 1 Paul has been committed to Stars in Your Eyes for 18 years, as a performer, backing singer, vocal director and recently as director of the entire show. People audition to play the role of a favourite performer singing one of their hits. This year, as well as directing the show, Paul played Luther Vandross singing “Never too much”. He’s also played Freddy Mercury (“I want to break free”) but his favourite of all 18 roles remains Stevie Wonder, singing “I just called to say I love you”. Will he remain with Stars any longer? “Of course. I’ll be there for as long as I’m around.” Paul has lived in Wanaka since he was 22 years old. Now married with three children, it’s a wonder he finds time for so much community work, as well as his job, and his family who he’s devoted too. “It’s all about time management. My wife Robyn has always gone to bed early, and when the children were little they were all tucked up by 7.30pm. So I only went to meetings which started after 7.30pm. I didn’t want to sit around watching TV. And that’s how it all began.”

It was great to see so much young talent and energy. It was quite intense so it was brilliant to end with a weekend of celebrating.” Cardrona was open for 17 weeks this season for the first time due to the great snow conditions. “We had a phenomenal snow year, which is great for us and the

whole district because internationals start looking at New Zealand as a place to definitely consider. Numbers have been strong and we hope that continues as our reputation grows,” said Bridget. Cardrona staff have recently moved into a new office in town, now called ‘Cardrona Corner’, and are busy refurbishing it and preparing for summer operations. Cardrona will soon be open for lift access in all four seasons – with mountain biking, hiking and more during summer and into autumn, and winter/spring skiing and snowboarding.

For sale: country pub with resident ghost Aimee Wilson Wanaka Sun The Luggate pub is on the market for $1.95 million, and the new owners get their very own in-house ghost to keep them company. The 146-year-old pub was purchased by Wanaka businessmen Brendan Quirke (pictured) and Sean Colbourne, of Alpine Holdings, 11 years ago. The pair recently sold the Bullock Bar – the last of their joint ventures; Brendan also sold his shares in Fitzpatricks Bar, and is now concentrating on his new upmarket Mazunga Restaurant in Wanaka. “We’ve kind of sold all the other businesses that we own and I’m taking a step back from that type of hospitality,” Brendan said. The Luggate Hotel sale also includes a two-bedroom cottage, historic stone hut and bare land for development. Brendan said there was huge opportunity to develop the place into a wedding venue or a microbrewery, but needed someone else with the drive. As for the ghost? Like any good country pub (St Bathans,

Brendan said there is definitely something hanging around the main lounge area, but he promises it is friendly. “We were doing some decorating out the back and I heard a door slam. The pub wasn’t open at that time, and I’m not a ghosty person, but you could definitely feel a presence there.”

A new school lunch option at Wanaka Primary School is trying to help children eat healthier food and reduce waste. Munch Your Lunch is the brainchild of the Wanaka Primary School Future Trust and Tiffany Firth, a chef from Te Tiritiri Kitchen. Their aim is to make healthy delivered school lunches available with no waste, while raising some money for the future of Wanaka Primary. Together with the Wastebusters Enviroschools facilitator Simon Williams, they came up with a plan to use packaging which could be washed, sterilised and reused. Simon’s vision was that collecting the packaging and putting any food scraps into the school Bokashi composting system would help the children learn about reuse and zero waste. The Enviroschools group was involved in the planning stages and designed the

logo for Munch Your Lunch. Simon took the kids through the process of converting a drawing into a digital logo. The logo was then printed on all the reusable lunch boxes. New Zealand company Sistema came on board with a great deal on the reusable lunch boxes - the first time reusable lunch boxes have been trialled in a school lunch delivery programme. The cost for the lunch will be $6 for a small option and $8 for a large option. This covers the cost of making a nutritious packed lunch and all profits go back to the future of the school. After the initial four-week trial, feedback will be taken from the school community, including which menu items are the favourites. If you’re keen on having this healthy lunch option in school, order online (follow the link on the Wanaka Primary website) and give yourself a day off making lunches.

Bob back home after stroke Naoise Wolsey Wanaka Sun Local make-up artist Gena Bagley has been named as one of the top 10 finalists in a nationwide competition. Run by Maybelline New Zealand, the contest gives the winners the opportunity to become a Maybelline makeup artist at the 2015 Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards, creating looks for some of New Zealand’s most glamorous celebrities. For stage one of the competition Gena created a make-up tutorial video, with the help of local model Mackenzie Ayres and photographer Andrew Sloan, and posted it to YouTube. From this she was chosen as one of 10 national finalists to attend a live trial in Auckland last weekend. “We had to create two different looks on two different models using Maybelline products,” said Gena. “This was to assess our skills, but also to see whether we would be a good representative for the Maybelline brand. It was a really amazing experience.” Gena will find out later this week if she has been chosen as one of the winners. She has been running her own freelance make-up business in Wanaka for the

They organised events and set up a Givealittle web page which generated thousands of dollars from donations from people all over the world. Bob thanked people for all the support on his Facebook page on Monday. “So many thanks to Wanaka and Treble Cone people and wonderful family and friends from around the world,” he wrote. “It’s been a long haul. Treble Cone ski instructor Bob Campbell has finally been given the green light to fly home after he suffered a stroke in his Wanaka home on August 29. Originally from Vermont, USA, Bob – who is approaching 70 - has shared his passion for the mountains with thousands of adults and children worldwide and is one of Treble Cone’s most loved and respected instructors. Bob was taken to Dunedin Hospital after suffering the stroke and doctors decided this week that he was fit enough to travel home to Vermont to continue his rehabilitation with his family. Bob started his journey home on Tuesday (October 13). With over 52 ski seasons, 7,500 lessons and six winters at Treble Cone under his belt, ski instructor Bob Campbell has become a local legend here in Wanaka.

Wanaka Sun Ruth Bennie is not your average 13-year-old. She’s only been holding a gun for two years and is already the National Secondary School Ladies Trap Shooting Champion. Another MAC student, Tim Weir (17), who also attended the National Secondary Schools Tournament in Hamilton recently, won the North Island men’s title in single barrel. Ruth said it felt “unbelievable” that she took out the title, considering it was her first year, and she was shooting against 17 and 18-year-old competitors. Her father Ewan Bennie, a former New Zealand representative, said he only intended that his daughter compete and gain some experience, not realising her potential. “There were over 300 shooters there,” he said. Tim’s brother, Lachie (15), also did well to gain 10th in the Kilwell Trophy Match for the North Island championship. Ruth said she had always been interested in shooting from a young age, when she would follow her father everywhere when he went hunting. She has also been given free entry into the next New Zealand

Hawea making submissions The new chair of the Hawea Community Association, Paul Cunningham, is encouraging residents to make submissions on the proposed District Plan. He said Hawea people are particularly concerned about two issues - whether the proposed new shopping zone for Lake Hawea is big enough, and if council can reassure property owners about the continued designation of rural residential subdivisions at Hawea Flat and Lake Hawea, particularly in relation to applications for consents to subdivide individual rural residential lots. “Hawea citizens are encouraged to make a submission,” Paul said. “Whether it is about protecting our stunning Hawea night skies, concerns about rural residential subdivision rules, heritage sites or shopping zones – whatever, please consider making a submission.”

Dr Compost is running two free workshops this week, one on growing vegetables and one on hot composting. We have a climate of extremes, so even if you’ve gardened before, it’s really worth coming along to the Get Growing workshop on Thursday (15th Oct) to get some tips on how to deal with frosts and intense sun, and to pick the easiest crops to grow. One thing you can do to make your plants more resilient and less thirsty is to add compost to the soil. More humus helps to retain the moisture in your soil, and mulching over the top prevents the sun sucking it all back out. The special Hot Composting workshop on Saturday will help you to create larger quantities of compost for your garden. Hot composting relies on stacking large quantities of organic materials in the right combinations at the same time; materials like pea straw, garden waste, lawn clippings, kitchen scraps and manure. This is a special one-off workshop due to the interest we’ve had in hot composting from past attendees of Dr Compost workshops. It’s suitable for anyone interested in hot composting, from novices to experts. And if you come to the Hot Composting workshop, you get

the added bonus of being able to peek inside Dr Compost’s own garden. The workshop is being held at Ben Elm’s place in Hawea, so you’ll be able to see his impressive stack of compost heaps and his sturdy macrocarpa raised beds. I went up there for a photo shoot a few weeks ago, and I loved that it’s clearly a working garden – with odd buckets half full of soil lying around. It made me feel better about the random objects inhabiting my garden. These workshops are part of the Dr Compost project which

Wanaka Wastebusters delivers for Queenstown Lakes District Council to help keep organic waste out of the landfill. If you can’t make these ones, don’t fret. Thank you to the farmers who choose controlled burn offs and therefore reduce the risk of overgrowth of scrub and gorse creating a hazard such as in Dunedin last week. Movember is coming! Glad to see some sunshine after the crazy winds last week!! Well done to all involved with Wanakafest and the brave people who got into the lake. What a great day!

Young athletes show off their snow skills Young Wanaka talents continued to impress at last week’s NZ Junior Freeski and Snowboard Nationals. The week-long event held at Cardrona attracted over 200 competitors aged five to 18 from New Zealand, Australia and France. “Every year we see the standard of halfpipe riding getting higher at Junior Nationals and this year in particular there were some outstanding performances,” said Head Judge Mike Hijgemann. “The young kids in particular really stood out, I thought they were amazing.” In the Year 3-4 Boys’ age group for the Salomon Snowboard Halfpipe Wanaka riders Campbell Melville Ives and Rocco Jamieson had a friendly but determined battle for the top score, both throwing down technical tricks including back 3 alley-oops and front 3s and a backflip for Campbell on his last

hit. Campbell took the win by a whisker showing slightly more control and amplitude. Although “pretty nervous at the start”, Campbell said the halfpipe is his favourite discipline because he likes “getting out there and having fun.” The top three boys in the Year 9-10 age group also impressed the judges, their well-tweaked grabs proof that the control and amplitude boxes were being ticked. Fletcher Craig (Hamilton) finished first, Ronan Thompson (Wanaka) second and Lachlan Blackmore (Auckland) third. While his twin brother was hard at work in the snowboard halfpipe comp, Finley Melville Ives took charge of the ski freeride side of things, winning the boys’ year 3-4 age category with a charging second run and particularly enjoying “gapping down the rock drops and being creative”. Gustav Legnavsky (Wanaka)

Young Wanaka talents continued to impress at last week’s NZ Junior Freeski and Snowboard Nationals.

“skied like an adult” despite his young age, the year 5-6 boys’ age group competitor impressing the judges with his strong skiing, arcing turns and total lack of hesitation. Ben Harrington (Wanaka) showed no hesitation with his big cliff hit, and skied a confident run top to bottom to win the year 9-10 boys’ age category.

There was also a showdown between Wanaka year 13 boys Craig Murray and Hank Bilous. “It’s our last Junior Nationals so we thought we should send it,” said Hank. “We didn’t want to ski the same line so we worked it out beforehand,” added Craig. Having spent several years impressing Junior Nationals

judges and spectators with their high-paced runs and penchant for landing on their feet no matter how big the rock drop, the question on everyone’s mind was what this pair will do next. The answer was simple: go bigger and faster. Craig came out in front with a massive cliff, tucked into a very technical high speed line.

Ceci ready for World Cup kick off Staff Reporter Wanaka Sun Wanaka footballer Olly Ceci has been selected to step onto the global stage next week as part of the New Zealand U17 Men’s National Team competing in the FIFA U17 World Cup. Led by coach Danny Hay – himself a former All Whites captain with 31 international caps – the team will contest Group F of the age-group international tournament in Puerto Montt along with France, Syria and Paraguay. The New Zealand side meet France in their first game on Tuesday 20 October at 9am (NZ time). All three of New Zealand’s pool matches and all of the games from the quarter-finals onwards will be shown live on Sky Sport 3. In New Zealand, Olly plays for Auckland’s North Shore Utd.
