Families facing rental shortage A Brand new location PAGE 7

Property owners urged to make houses available Naoise Wolsey Wanaka Sun

roperty owners with houses lying vacant in Wanaka have been urged to put them up for rent as a severe housing shortage hits town. Families around Wanaka are resorting to living in tents and garages as they desperately search for long-term rental properties, but it could be a while before they find somewhere to call home, according to Property Manager Margo Goodsell from Wanaka property management company Housemart. “There is a huge shortage of houses for rent,” Margo told The Wanaka Sun. “There’s much more demand than last year - around triple the usual amount.”

solution for the rental shortage. “A lot of home owners will be coming back to visit Wanaka over the Labour Day holiday weekend and it would be a good opportunity to consider if they are in a position to rent out their homes to generate some income for themselves while helping Wanaka’s rental shortage.” Wanaka father Greg Paul has been searching for a home for his family for the last three months. The single dad is currently living with his two young children in a friend’s garage. “It’s been hell for the last three months,” said Greg. “I’ve been looking on all the websites, I’ve placed ads online and in the papers, but every time I go to a house inspection there’s always four or five other people

Margo said that there were a mixture of people looking for homes, but most were in need of long-term rentals. “There is very little available at the moment and those properties that are available are attracting several applications from high calibre candidates making it very difficult to choose,” said Margo. “But our rental properties are getting snapped up as soon as we advertise them. We have a viewing for a house next Wednesday with nine groups of people already lined up to see it and there will probably be more. We have also seen rents increasing by about 10 to 20 dollars a week.” Margo pointed to the many holiday homes lying vacant for most of the year in Wanaka as a possible

coming along and looking too and the estate agent chooses who gets it. “We’re living in my mate’s garage at the moment. It’s not ideal. It would be nice to finally get somewhere and unpack all these boxes.” Community Networks manager Kate Murray agreed that the rental situation this year appeared to be worse than other years. “I know of two families who are living in camping grounds at the moment because they can’t find a place. “It can be very stressful for families with children involved. One family said their children are looking at it as an adventure, but I’m sure the novelty wears off after a while,” said Kate.

From Wanaka to Paris … by bike Naoise Wolsey Wanaka Sun French photographer Alex Gendron is gearing up for the challenge of a lifetime – cycling from Wanaka all the way to Paris. Alex plans to ride his bike and sail the seas and oceans from New Zealand to France, all the while avoiding the use of engines powered by fossil fuels – so no cars and no airplanes. “I think I will ride about 28,000km for roughly one year, but as I have few options to go through the Middle East, it might be a bit longer due to detours,” said Alex. He will be taking photos and documenting his journey online along the way. Alex is currently looking for sponsors and choosing a charity to help raise awareness for during his adventure. Since quitting his nine-to-five office job in 2013, Alex has been travelling the world and arrived in Wanaka in March, where he has been taking advantage of all the adventure our town has to offer. “My biggest relief came when I quit my office job,” said Alex. “At this time, the best part of my day was riding my bicycle to and from work.” Alex had always dreamed of having adventures around the world, but he was “too scared about change and the unknown”. “I got into a kind of depression and it helped me to make that life changing decision,” said Alex. Through his journey Alex hopes to inspire anyone who feels stuck in their lives to make life changing decisions and reach their goals. “My decision changed my whole life and allowed me time to travel across Australia and New Zealand. These travels opened my mind and helped me learn a lot about life and myself,” said Alex. To keep up to date with Alex’s journey visit www. pixnbike.com or follow ‘agphotofr’ on instragram or Alexandre.Gendron.Photography on Facebook.

Mead Road, the access road to the Department of Conservation’s Kidds Bush camping ground, at Lake Hawea, will be open to the public over summer. At a Wanaka Community Board meeting yesterday, chairwoman Rachel Brown said Hunter Valley Station had advised the road would be open ‘’after lambing until Easter 2016’’. The road crosses station land and public access has been restricted in the past.

Pirates coming to Paradise Characters as diverse as Hawea Flat Herbal Healers and Hunter Crescent Book Club members feature alongside swashbuckling scoundrels in a 100 percent local show premiering in Wanaka on October 29. Pirates in Paradise is a comedy written by Gilly Pugh and John Schwarz and stars nearly 50 students from the Aspiring Childrens’ Theatre School and 16 local adults. “Our youngest performers are just five years old,” said writer/director Gilly Pugh. “I’m not sure some of our older pirate crew would like their ages made public.” Audiences can expect plenty of pirate action, with real swords made by Ernie Malushnig from Metalworks being used on stage. “He had a choice to walk the plank or make our swords,” Gilly said. The show takes the audience from a tropical paradise to the shores of Lake Wanaka, and is designed to be a family show with something for everyone. “It’s not a serious piece of theatre, it’s very much a comedy,” Gilly said. The show will run for three nights (October 29-31) at the Lake Wanaka Centre. Tickets are available from Black Peak Gelato ($15 adults, $10 children). Royal Society sees the light

A talk to celebrate the United Nation’s International Year of Light is being hosted by the Wanaka Branch of the Royal Society this Friday October 23. The talk will explain the impacts of light on human health, energy and literature. It will also be video-streamed to all the other Royal Society of NZ branches. The talk will be held at the Wanaka Presbyterian Church at 6pm, and the cost is $5.

Festival of Colour reports in the black

Southern Lakes Arts Festival Trust reported a modest surplus for the 2014/15 year which will be reinvested in future events. Chair, Hetty Van Hale said the current festival cycle, which included the Festival of Colour’s 10th anniversary, had been a busy one building on its reputation for presenting the ‘best little arts festival in New Zealand’. Festival Director Philip Tremewan confirmed he was actively securing several international festival acts for the next Festival of Colour in 2017.

After five years as deputy Mayor, Lyal Cocks (pictured) has decided to step up to the challenge of running the Queenstown Lakes district. Lyal confirmed last week he would stand at the next election, which is still a year away. Having three district councillors and the Mayor herself approach him to ask if he would put his name forward, was all the encouragement he needed. “I have been thinking about it for a while,” he said. “I have the knowledge and experience to do the job well.” The 59-year-old has been full-time deputy mayor since 2010 and was elected to the council in 2007. Lyal would be the district’s first Wanaka-based mayor and he said it was time to consolidate “because there is a lot of growth going on.” Transport and affordable housing were big issues and they had to be addressed. But the first big challenge before the next election was convincing the entire Queenstown population to vote for a Wanaka Mayor. “I spend a fair bit of time over there now anyway, but I will need to get some more exposure. “I will do what I have to do. It’s not a job, it’s more than that,” he said. WANAKA SUN

Matthew Prince, Wilfred Spearing, Oscar Hetherington, Sam Coupland, Bella Fraser, Fiona Murray, Breagha Rennie and Phoebe Young are from the Mount Aspiring College Get2Go Adventure Race Team.

After winning the Otago regional Hilary Outdoors Get2Go competition, the eight-member Mt Aspiring College team will compete in the national finals which is a five-day event being held on Great Barrier Island on December 5. Team member Bella Fraser said that the Get2Go competition is a mixture of problem solving, adventure racing, an amazing race and survivor mixed together and contains sports such as rock climbing, orienteering, kayaking, mountain biking and problem solving. The Otago regional race was held in Dunedin on October 16. “It was an action-packed day full of fun challenges and was

very competitive. MAC had a very close competition with the Dunstan team, ending up winning by four points,” Bella said. Students will be selling raffle tickets over the coming weeks, the proceeds of which will go towards the cost to travel to the event, which is around $8000. “All of the prizes have been donated by local businesses and are amazing. Watch out for them around Wanaka over the next few weeks to buy a few tickets and support them. All proceeds go directly to the MAC Get2Go team to help with their considerable costs.”

This means less atmosphere to protect us from UV, especially between 10am and 2pm. We’ve all heard the “slip, slop, slap and hat” and “prevention is better than cure” but here are some things you may not know…. At 300m elevation in Wanaka we get 4% more UV and same again for every 300m elevation you gain. If you get burnt you can expect the sunburn to start showing 2-6hrs after exposure and peak at 12-24hrs. The severity of the symptoms can be lessened by taking 2 aspirin immediately and then 2 every 4 hours. Bear in mind, one blistering sunburn is said to double the likelihood of developing skin cancer. You can decrease the damage to your skin (aging and risk of cancer) by taking a natural supplement marketed as Heliocare®. Find out more about this supplement at http://tinyurl.com/psdvett. It’s no longer available in NZ, but you can buy it online. If you are thinking “yikes, I got burnt all the time as a kid” - well you can substantially reduce your risk of non-melanoma skin cancer by taking regular vitamin B3 (500mg a day and fully funded on prescription). Everyone should do self-checks every 1 to 3 months and if you are worried about something, get it checked by your doctor - it could save your life! Finally, regular moderate sun exposure is actually good for you and may even even protect you against melanoma - so get some regular sun, just don’t get burnt!

Easy.

WORKSHOP WORKSHOP

The Catalina at a previous Warbirds Over Wanaka Airshow

PHOTO: SUPPLIED

Help keep the Catalina flying Wanaka people have the chance next month to help keep one of New Zealand’s most famous aircraft flying. Warbirds Over Wanaka is hosting the South Island premiere of the film Return of the Catalina, which tells the story of top secret long-distance flights to England after the fall of Singapore in World War II. Warbirds Over Wanaka general manager Ed Taylor says the November 4 screening at Cinema Paradiso brings attention to the unsung war heroes who reconnected Australia and New Zealand to their northern allies. The screening is a fundraiser for the NZ Catalina Preservation Society, which looks after New Zealand’s only airworthy flying boat. It has been a crowd favourite at Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshows.

“The Catalina is returning to the airshow in 2016 after a major refurbishment so will be a special sight, especially seeing it landing on the lake,” said Ed. Daniel Bunker’s feature length documentary follows a band of aviators as they restore and fly a 70-year-old Catalina flying boat from Spain to Australia in order to recognise the unacknowledged war heroes. They provided a vital lifeline for the allied war effort, flying across enemy territory in unarmed Catalina flying boats for up to 32 hours, carrying secret cargo and VIPs. They were in the air for so long that they were called Double Sunrise flights. Tickets are $35 each which includes a drink and nibbles, an auction and a talk by the Catalina’s chief pilot. Pick up tickets at Cinema Paradiso or call the Warbirds Over Wanaka office on 443 8619.

New Branding festival site a ‘slice of paradise’

Give students a home away from home Have you ever thought about hosting international students? We would love to hear from more families with students at Mount Aspiring College, who would like to provide a safe home away from home, for our International Students. International students often ask to stay amongst people of their own age, so we would love to hear from families with students! In Term 1 we will have students from Germany, Brazil, Japan, Nepal, South Korea, Thailand and New Caledonia who are all very excited to be coming to Wanaka and Mount Aspiring College. What are the benefits? You will get to know young people from other cultures and build relationships across the planet. You will have support from staff at the International Language Centre 24/7 and an extra $250 per week. There are short or long term placements available. Some students come for one term (3 months) others come for a year. We also have small groups from time to time who stay for say, two weeks who also will require homestay families. In whichever way you would like to help us - please contact the International Language Centre on 443 0466 or homestay@mtaspiring. school.nz for more information.

The Branding Music Festival will move to a new location in 2015 in a sheltered basin on the banks of the Clutha River at the festival director’s private property, ‘Lyonfield’ at Queensberry, just 3km south of Luggate. “It really is the natural progression for the growth of the festival as we simply saw last year the demand was greater than the capacity of the venue. We can’t wait to show off the new festival site really soon. It’s a slice of paradise,” explains Sarah Perriam, The Branding Music Festival’s director. The two-day festival began as a stage in a beer garden and has grown to become New Zealand’s largest international country-rock-pop music festival. “Luggate Hotel is pretty much the only hotel in New Zealand, I reckon, that you will hear the music that this next generation of Kiwi country

fans are listening to on streaming media from the States. It may not be mainstream in New Zealand, but thousands are turning up to The Branding from as far as Australia,” said Sarah. The 2015 CMA Global Artist of the Year, Australian Morgan Evans (pictured), will be featured at the event. The country-rock artist currently resides in the US and has toured with Brett Eldredge, Taylor Swift and Alan Jackson. Favourites Mae Valley, Assembly Required and Maggie Ruddenklau will perform on January 1 before the Wanaka Rodeo the next day. “We have over 20 hours from rock to pop with the best line-up of modern country in between. There is truly something for everyone young and old. We are so certain that this is the best line-up of music in one place,” explains the festival’s music manager, Cam Scott. The Festival kicks off on December 31. For more information and tickets go to www.thebranding.co.nz WANAKA SUN

COMMUNITY CONNECTORS Are you a community connector? Do you want to steer our region's future? We are looking for a volunteer steering group to guide a major community development scheme - people who know, love, and lead various segments of our community. If this is you or someone you know, please visit www.communitynetworks.co.nz or call 443 7799 by Tuesday October 27.

WHAT IS COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT? A process where community members come together to take collective action and generate solutions to common problems. Community wellbeing (economic, social, environmental, and cultural) often evolves from this grassroots action. WHY DOES IT MATTER? Wanaka is at a crucial point in our development, needing to build a strategic, coordinated community infrastructure to accommodate our high growth rate and future-proof our success as a region. The Community Development Scheme allows us to energise effort in this area.

The Egmont Ensemble is being brought to Wanaka for the first time by the Royal Over-Seas League (ROSLNZ). It is a self-funded and non-profit Commonwealth organisation committed to supporting New Zealand musicians and artists at the onset of their careers through a programme of scholarships and performance opportunities. New Zealander Benjamin Baker (violin) and British musicians Jonathan Bloxham (cello) and Sam Armstrong (piano) make up the Egmont Ensemble which was formed in 2014. They will be performing works by Beethoven, Gareth Farr, Schubert and Strauss. The Wanaka Concert Society is staging the concert in Wanaka on November 5 at the Lake Wanaka Centre and has selected the Upper Clutha Hospice Trust to be the local charity to benefit from the concert. The Trust was formed three years ago to provide a Palliative and Respite Care facility for terminally ill patients in the Upper Clutha. The Trust will have a suite of rooms in the new Aspiring Enliven Care Centre being developed by the developers of the Aspiring Lifestyle Retirement Village in partnership with Presbyterian Support Otago on land between the Aspiring Retirement Village and the Wanaka Lakes Medical Centre. Construction of the AECC has just commenced.

The Trust has already raised funds to cover the ownership of the Palliative and Respite Care Suite and its fitout, and is continuing to raise funds to underpin the operating costs of the suite. The proceeds of the Egmont Ensemble Concert will contribute to funding the operation of the suite. Russell McGeorge, the Chairman of the Upper Clutha Hospice Trust said the Trust is thrilled to see such a talented group of musicians of international standing being brought to Wanaka by the ROSLNZ and appreciate being selected by the Wanaka Concert Society to be the beneficiary of the concert. “I think that Wanaka is in line for a real treat by the Egmont Ensemble, it should be a great night,” he said. Tickets for the concert are available from Gifted Design, Helwick Street and are $35 with students at $10.

More wine celebrations

Timmy and Gazza hit town Caroline Harker Wanaka Sun Two of New Zealand’s best known raconteurs will be in Wanaka at Labour weekend debating where the world would be without laughter. Gary “Gazza” McCormick and Mayor Tim Shadbolt are doing two performances at Bistro Gentil on Sunday October 25. The pair have known one another since they were arrested on a political protest at Parliament back in the seventies and spent the day together in a cell at Wellington Police Station. “I made a brilliant speech to the Magistrate about freedom of speech - but he didn’t seem to be listening,” said Gary, who was last in Wanaka on Valentine’s Day during the Outspoken Festival of words and storytelling. New Zealand’s longest serving mayor Tim Shadbolt is regularly voted New Zealand’s most trusted politician. “I’m very proud to be the most trusted of a bad

bunch,” he said, crediting this to the fact he can laugh at himself. “Given Invercargill’s… shall we say, bracing climate, I have to say humour is very important to us in Southland,” he said. “Up until recent times we have not seen ourselves as the Gold Coast of New Zealand. But with global warming it’s only a matter of time before our parking wardens are in bikinis.” Tim said he was looking forward to the debating with Gary again. “It’s a lot of fun and we are passing on yarns and anecdotes which Kiwis of all ages enjoy. Telling yarns is an important part of our heritage. And in our case, all of the stories are true”. Bistro Gentil’s Julia Le said the idea behind the debate was to offer some entertainment in Wanaka during Labour weekend. “Queenstown has got its Jazz festival,” she said. “Hopefully, year after year, Wanaka will have stronger and stronger offerings for visitors.

Central Otago has a new annual wine festival called Down to Earth. It starts on October 24 and runs for 12 days with events all over the region, including winemaking, vineyard tours, food and wine matching, long lunches and degustation dinners. Organiser Bruce McGechan describes the festival as a hands-on celebration where participants can roll up their sleeves and get involved in winemaking. More than 30 winegrowers are participating throughout the region. “Down to Earth is a celebration for lovers of wine, who want more than a wine tour,” Bruce said. “[It] is aimed at visitors and locals with a desire to understand the nuances of wine making in the region and discover for themselves what’s earned Central Otago its world famous reputation.”

The Pembroke Swill Wine highlights by John Hallum A tor is a rock formation that rises abruptly from the surrounding smooth and gentle slopes of a rounded hill. The geological and climatic conditions that produce these remarkable structures in Central Otago are also responsible for that other quintessential reginal phenomenon – pinot noir grapes. This month we’re excited about the aptly-named McArthur Ridge Southern Tor Pinot Noir from the Alexandra sub-region. The schist compounds of the soil there yield premium pinot noir grapes that make for an impeccable drinking experience. It’s the kind of wine you might like to have a few bottles of to enjoy

now, and in the future, so take advantage of our special case price! McArthur Ridge Southern Tor Pinot Noir 2010 Central Otago, $30 Special six-pack price, $150 The idea of a rock formation that stands out from its surrounding landscape is an appropriate metaphor for this great value for money pinot noir. Despite its rugged etymology, this is a beautifully evolved, rounded and multi-layered pinot noir. Wonderful aromas of mature fruit, leather, mixed spiced and roasted almond on the nose. The wine flows seamlessly through the palate, and shows elegance and excellent persistency. Ideal with rich, savory dishes. ADVERTORIAL

Forming nearly 30 years ago, the band is now one of the country’s most contagious and favourite acts. They are renowned as one of the most powerful, crisp and relentless acts in the country and the band will sling shot festival goers into 2016. Shihad will join one of the world’s best DJs, Carl Cox, as co-headliners. Red Bull Sound Select brings artists Kamandi, SPYCC and Kakapo to round off the freshest and best in NZ new music. A home your children’s children will be proud of Ben and Jessica Eyers believe there is a better way to design and build houses. The couple, who run local building and design company Hiberna, are experts in creating sustainable, eco-friendly, energy efficient homes. Architectural designer Jessica and carpenter Ben first created his parents’ house in Wanaka in 2008 - an energy efficient, passive solar home with many environmental features, including rammed earth, natural lime plasters and solar hot water. Since then the couple have travelled the world, acquiring new design knowledge and building techniques. The couple are offering free advice to people building or renovating in the district. “We just want to

build houses that people will want to pass down to their children’s children,” says Jessica. Ben and Jessica’s top tips for an eco-friendly, high performance house: 1. Consider the house as a balance of energy inputs and outputs. Maximise free inputs (solar) while minimising outputs (heat loss). 2. Build tight. Ventilation must be controlled: intentional or unintentional leaks will suck heat out of a building. 3. Keep it natural, and local, where possible. 4. Build some ‘delight’ into the design. A sunny window seat, window sills made of native timbers or a sheltered verandah. 5. Keep it small. Unneeded space results in higher running costs.

Wanaka 140 Aubrey Road This sun soaked classic located between Kelly’s Flat and the Holy Family School field ensures you won’t be feeling hemmed in here, with expansive open views out to the north taking in Sticky Forest and Mt Gold. The grounds have been well landscaped, and are easy care, with a handy double garage, concrete driveway and sunny deck. Move inside the home, and step back in time with this 80’s classic, with the retro wallpaper throughout, three generous bedrooms, separate dining and a great sized living that flows out into the sunroom. All of this and you are only 1km from the lake. There is so much to love about this property, and with a GV of $345,000 this one is not to be missed.

What’s up at DOC? Caroline Harker Wanaka Sun Phil Tisch (pictured) is one of three Central Otago Department of Conservation managers who has a new job. A further restructuring of DOC, after a huge one which took place two years ago, is being gradually implemented across the country. This one does not involve any redundancies. It is the result of three separate surveys (including one of 1000 staff) which reached the same conclusions; firstly - the new partnership group needed more time to do what it was set up to do, i.e. focus on new work with community groups, businesses and iwi, and secondly, there needed to be more individual accountability within the department. Phil said during the last two years in his job as conservation partnerships manager he has been busy with visitor centre work, resource management and crown pastoral land act issues, water catchment and more, leaving little time for partnership work. Apparently this has been a problem around the country. Over the next three months Phil will be passing his work over to the other two new managers – Mike Tubbs who is the new operations manager for the greater Central Otago district (based in Alexander) and Chris Sydney who is the new improvement manager for the Southern South Island district (based in Wanaka). The eight or nine staff members working for Phil will also change over and be working for Mike or Chris. Once the changeover is complete Phil, and other partnerships managers around the country, will be assigned national projects. Examples of those already established by the department include the partnership with Air New Zealand promoting the Great Walks and a partnership with Fonterra protecting waterways. Phil said while he doesn’t know what his new projects will be, he would like to work closely with Ngai Tahu and the tribe’s conservation aspirations. “Ngai Tahu believe in the connectedness of all things with the environment,” he said. “Imagine if the average New Zealander felt like that. If they didn’t see themselves as separate from a

river they wouldn’t throw rubbish in it, would they?” Phil said potential local partnership projects he would like to be involved in include working with Soho Properties (now the largest QEII covenant in the country) on restoration, and Forest and Bird’s Project Makarora which aims to ‘harness’ traffic on the Haast Highway to encourage more people to visit the area around the Young, Wilkin and Makarora rivers. Phil said DOC director-general Lou Sanson sees the department and the conservation estate as a key player in New Zealand’s future. Phil has been with DOC in Wanaka since the restructuring two years ago. Prior to that he was based with DOC in Te Anau for seven years where he managed the national tahake recovery programme.

Method Hold each leaf of kale and rip small, bite-sized pieces of the greens off of the stem and collect them in a bowl. Add the orange and lime juices, oil, agave, garlic, salt and cayenne to the bowl and massage the ingredients into the leaves of the kale for at least 2 minutes. Either allow the kale to sit and marinate (for 30 minutes to overnight in the fridge) or distribute to plates and top with the tangerines, currants and grated carrot.

TEXT MESSAGES Thank you to the dog owners who pick up poop on Mt Iron walking tracks! We as locals were disappointed in the service in the making of coffees at the restaurant while on our Waterfall Creek walk. This is not the first time this has happened and wish not to recommend or return. Wanaka Ski & Snowsports Club thank you so much for your amazing support of local children & families. encouraging them to get out in the snow & have fun. I think that the recent footpath extension outside the Lake Bar is excellent. It really ads vibrancy and life to that part of town. It’s great to have a variety of venues where we can watch the Rugby World Cup live in our small community.

TEXT THE WANAKA SUN

EDITORIAL Finding a home sweet home As the long weekend approaches, people are getting ready to celebrate and crowds will be flocking to Wanaka to enjoy our beautiful scenery for a few days. But for some families, a cloud will be hanging over this weekend of celebration – and we’re not talking about the weather. Due to a shortage of rental houses, some families with young children are living in campsites. One family we spoke to are staying in a friend’s garage. This is far from ideal and the uncertainty and lack of stability can be very stressful for families, especially those with school-aged children. A look at the Wanaka community Facebook pages reveals that there are many couples and single people having trouble finding a home as well. One Wanaka property management company believes demand has almost tripled since this time last year. As holiday home owners come back to Wanaka this weekend to enjoy the Labour Day festivities, now would be the perfect time to consider renting out your house if it lies vacant for most of the year. It would generate some extra income for the owner and provide a wonderful Wanaka family with a place to call home – a win-win situation.

Common courtesy I`m writing to make a polite request for a bit of common courtesy on the lake. Tuesday last week around 5.30pm, I noticed a jet ski using the swim buoy line as a slalom course at speeds above the 5 knot limit. This could have ended in a tragic accident as there were two swimmers inside of the buoy line less than 20m ahead of the jet ski. Jamie Rankin

CRIME LINE By Ian Henderson More unsettled weather has continued as summer approaches and we are now seeing lawnmowers in action, vegie gardens being planted out, boat owners preparing their gear, and the final two weeks of the RWC with South Africa next, then perhaps Australia? Meanwhile local police have remained active dealing with a number of incidents in and around the town. Here are a few of those incidents: On the October 16 police attended a minor vehicle accident on Reece Crescent and found the driver to be disqualified. He then was processed for drink driving. Owners of a Mt Iron holiday home have discovered that their vacant home was not vacant at all - someone had broken in and was squatting there! On the October 17, a locally employed male was processed for drink driving. On the October 18, a visitor on a work visa was also processed for drink driving. On the same day police dealt with a trespass incident in Plantation Road and two people were warned not to return to an address or face arrest. Found items handed into the station in the last week or so have been mostly electronic items, i.e. laptop, iPhone, one camera and three wallets, also two bikes. If this sounds like your property or if you have lost any items at all, come down to the station and have a look. We also get handed in keys, sunglasses and various bankcards weekly. It’s great to see that the Wanaka public are honest. With school back in session, motorists are reminded to keep their speeds down when driving past the local schools, and pass school buses at no more than 20km/hr where they are picking up or letting off passengers. Police will also be monitoring vehicles speeds, drivers using cell phones, and the wearing of seatbelts over the next few months. A reminder from police attending vehicle accidents that it is crucial that when approaching emergency vehicles with flashing lights, to slow down and be mindful of emergency staff safety. If you have any information pertaining to the incidents above please call the Station on 03 443 7272 to speak to an officer, or to give information anonymously, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

This is a story in the year of a group of normal New Zealanders who reside in a normal New Zealand street in pre-earthquake Christchurch. Wanaka author Helen Herbert launched her book at the Wanaka Library in August this year. Having met the author, I took the opportunity to read it and I’m glad I did. It is a quick, light, nicely written and enjoyable read and I would recommend it as such. The characters represent a mix of the affluent, the poor, those on the wrong side of the law, the virtuous and those the reader empathises with for their very human qualities. The individuals appeal to the reader with all their imperfections, their lives, their emotions and histories - simply because they have a depth which allows the reader to create very real comparisons. As the story develops, so do the relationships between the street’s residents. There is Eleanor Chandler, in her eighties, pompous and a snob, looking down on the likes of Kay Smith, in her forties, at the bottom of the social, economic ladder with a husband in gaol. Her neighbour, John Fox, is nouveau rich and self-satisfied. His wife, Barbara in her early 40s is childless after twenty years of marriage. David and Jill Hughes, Jill with health issues, live next door. Fiona and Alec Cameron in their 50s, are the backbones of society and their boarder, Hannah Naseby, unmarried and a retired Educational Psychologist in her 60s finds her life changes when she befriends Jessie, an unmarried mother. An understanding of what makes people tick is portrayed skilfully throughout the story: “Unexpectedly, Alec had a moment of enlightenment. John had once confided that

he hadn’t been brought up with money. He had pulled himself up by his boot straps. Yet, despite his success and affluence it was obvious that in reality he lacked the confidence which should have accompanied his success. His cocksure manner and constant philandering were a means by which he managed his innate uncertainty. Obviously he had to constantly reassure himself that he was attractive and could ‘pull the birds’. Though amused by the idea that he was playing the amateur psychologist, Alec, to his amazement, felt a degree of compassion for his golf partner.” New relationships develop and old ones disintegrate as the street’s residents become immersed in their neighbours’ lives. The author adroitly weaves the stories of each individual to lead to surprise relationships that keep you reading until the end. This book would make a good base for a new Kiwi television series with Ms Herbert’s writing skills guaranteed to pull in an audience – Coronation Street – watch out!

GREBE DIARY Retired zoologist John Darby keeps us up to date on the latest grebe hatchings at Lake Wanaka. When I first started this programme, I did not set targets other than seeing if it was possible to get a pair of Grebes to breed successfully. Quite quietly, but I must admit with a bit of a flourish, we passed the 50 mark (actual figure 52) by way of chicks fledging from the marina this last week. The boost came after nest 2 hatched four of their five eggs. Nest 3 had high ambitions with its nest also incubating four eggs, but lost one egg out of the nest and almost lost one of its chicks barely two hours old as it tumbled out of the nest. It was unable to climb the steep 40+cm slope to get back in the nest. Having just berthed the “lifeboat”, it was relaunched and paddled out to the nest and the chick placed back in the nest bowl. One unanticipated aspect of this work has been the pleasure that it has given to so many people. I have always felt that if you have a love of music and or natural history then you will always find peace somewhere. That has never been more evident than in the membership of the Wanaka Photographic Society who has just donated a new platform. We will build it sometime this coming week. It will be numbered 14.

Multi-sporter Emily Wilson will tackle Treble Cone Road for World Diabetes Day

Multi-sporter doing her bit for World Diabetes Day Multi-sporter Emily Wilson is gearing up to mountain bike up and down the Treble Cone access road in November at least five times. The 24-year-old diabetic will tackle the steep seven-kilometre gravel road on World Diabetes Day - November 14, and is hoping others will be there to support her. They don’t necessarily have to ride beside her, they could just be at the bottom cheering. The International Diabetes Young Leader’s goal is to ride the equivalent of Mt Everest’s elevation (8848 metres above sea level). And on November 11 she is holding her first Diabetes Support Group meeting in the Community Networks Meeting Room at 7pm to give others with diabetes support and information.

“There is a massive need for this. It affects so many people – mums, adolescents, elderly. There is a lot more in Wanaka than people think.” Emily has battled diabetes for over a year and finds it particularly challenging having to watch everything she eats, particularly when she’s racing. On a recent trip to China competing in a series of multi-day adventure races, she found her insulin levels spiking from the different food she was eating. Back home, so far she has at least 20 friends and family keen to be part of her challenge up the mountain, and is hoping food stall holders will also be there. Supporters can come and cheer her on from 10am.

Would you like some nipples? While at the recent Snowsports Awards, a friend of mine who has a hearing loss approached me with a funny story. He had sat down to dinner at a local Wanaka restaurant and the waitress said to him “Would you like some nipples?” The waitress was young and pretty and knowing his glory days were over years ago, he was quite taken back. He looked around, she was definitely talking to him…. And she asked again, “Would you like some nipples?” His dream come true moment ended abruptly when he realised she was actually asking him if he wanted some “NIBBLES!” Misunderstandings like these are often key drivers that prompt people to finally take action on their hearing loss. The average person has been struggling to hear for 7 to 10 years before they come in to see me. Why so much resistance to getting hearing impairment diagnosed and treated? First, denial. Many older

adults like to think that they don’t have a problem and ignore the numerous warning signs, that is until an awkward social faux pas occurs. The number one comment from customers is “I hear what I want to hear,” says Scott Wright. “What they don’t fully comprehend is that in order to be fully engaged in life, you have to be able to communicate and be communicated to.” “Hearing well is a vital part of being social and being engaged in social settings.” “I tell customers who deny they have a problem, even after testing, to go home and really pay attention to every time they said “what?” or turn the volume up “just a couple more” or miss the funny side of a conversation because they misheard a key part of it.” New Zealand Hearing is Wanaka’s only full time provider of hearing healthcare. Scott lives locally and is always flexible with appointment times so he can cater for the active Wanaka locals.

Work starts on Olympic quality hockey turf It’s been several years in the planning and fundraising, but work has finally started on Cromwell’s new hockey turf. Central Otago Sports Turf Trust chairman Michael Paardekooper confirmed work began on Monday, October 12, with the ripping up of the old sand turf. He was also excited to announce the new turf will be the same as the turf being established in Rio de Janeiro for next year’s Olympic Games. “This will be one of the first of the 2016 Olympic turfs to be established in New Zealand and we are delighted to have been able to upgrade to an Olympic standard turf right here in Central Otago.” Mr Paardekooper said the trust was delighted to have local companies Fulton Hogan and Waterforce doing the work, along with the turf supplier Polytan STI. The targeted completion date for the

turf is the end of January, which will be in plenty of time for the beginning of the new season in March. The total cost of the project, including the turf and amenities building, will be around $1.8m, of which the replacement turf is just under $700,000. The amenities building has been put on hold short-term as the trust still needed $150,000 to complete the whole project, Mr Paardekooper said. Mr Paardekooper said with more than 700 registered hockey players in the Southern Lakes-Central Otago region, the trust believed the new turf would help build up the numbers playing hockey in all grades. “Our predictions are that we will see this grow to 800 players this coming year. From my conversations with the hockey community, there is much excitement about being able to play on the new turf this coming season,” he said. WANAKA SUN

Junior Rowing Girls face tough conditions The Wanaka Under 15 Rowing Girls attended the Aoraki Regatta held at Ruataniwha last weekend. It was the first regatta of the season held over 1000m and was aimed at new rowers. Six clubs attended the event with the girls racing in marginal conditions with gusty winds and rough water on Saturday morning. The afternoon saw the weather improving, bringing ideal conditions for racing with

the girls qualifying for a number of A finals on Sunday. Amanda Inkster, Wanaka Rowing Club Safety Officer, said that the conditions were definitely a test of stamina in the cold blustery weather but the new novice girls rowing in 50% crews with the older experienced crews managed really well. The regatta was abandoned on Sunday morning due to high winds.
