Most of these visitors were from Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangdong. Data also shows that the Chinese tourists are also staying longer.” Edgewater general manager Mike Barton confirmed the resort had experienced a growth in Chinese visitors over the last couple of years.

Edgewater had 74 pre-arranged appointments over three days with travel trade buyers from all over China and several from Hong Kong and Taiwan. We have seen an 86 percent growth from the Chinese market from our first visit to the second and are now seeing growth on top of that since the October 2015 visit,” Mike said. Rezoning submissions to close soon MADDY HARKER Wanaka Sun Public submissions for a proposed plan change to rezone 6ha of Open Space zoned land at the north end of Peninsula Bay for specific low density residential development will close on January 28. The proposed change would allow for the creation of 26 large residential lots as part of Peninsula Bay subdivision, owned by Infinity Investments Limited. If successful, the plan change would move the existing Open Space zone boundary north by 150m, in two clusters. Part of the subject site is in within an Outstanding Natural Landscape and the site includes a range of indigenous vegetation. John Wellington, on behalf of the Upper Clutha Environmental Society, said that they strongly oppose the proposal. “They are trying to undo the conditions that allowed the original development to take place,” John said. “The Society origi-

nally opposed the whole Peninsula Bay development but we changed to support most of it because that area was logical place for the town to develop. But, this was subject to the condition that the land they now want to develop was protected.” The proposal states developers plan to retain 4500sqm of existing kanuka and propose a 11,000sqm of new planting. The land which remains Open Space zoned would be vested in the council as a reserve, and would contain new walking and mountain biking tracks. “This doesn’t have the value it appears to have,” John said. “Any new planting is great, but it is not worth the intrusion of built forms in that location.” “We really wanted to keep development off the ledge that rolls over to the lake edge. The Open Space zone was supposed to be a buffer between development and the lake edge.” Infinity declined to comment when contacted yesterday.

Proposed Easter trading laws Public submissions on proposed Easter Sunday shop trading laws close today January 21, 2016. Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean said retailers could open on Easter Sunday as soon as next year. “After a decade of campaigning and intense lobbying around Easter trading I am delighted that this next step has been achieved,” Jacqui said. The bill proposes to amend the Shop Trading Hours Act Repeal Act 1990 to grant territorial authorities a limited power to create bylaws to allow shop trading on Easter Sunday, and enable shop workers to refuse work on Easter Sunday. Current rules around shop

trading over the Easter period are complex, allowing certain shops selling specific items to remain open, while others must close. Queenstown and Taupo have had an exemptions which allow shops to open on Easter Sunday, while those in Wanaka and Rotorua cannot. The law change means communities will be able to choose whether or not to allow trading on Easter Sunday and will mean businesses in tourist areas can meet the needs of visitors. The law change will come into effect when Territorial Authorities make bylaws to allow for trading on Easter Sunday, likely from Easter 2017. WANAKA SUN

Drop-in session well attended GLENDA TURNBULL Wanaka Sun The first drop-in session to discuss the Draft Wanaka Lakefront Development Plan on Tuesday was well attended. Feedback on the lakefront development plan opened in December and includes options for alternative car parking layouts, improved pedestrian and cycle ways, increased green space, new boating facilities and a potential events space. Queenstown Lakes District Council senior parks and reserves planner Jeannie Galavazi said there was a lot of discussion about car parking. “We have had a 50-50 response to car parking. Half have said to retain as much car parking as possible and half wanting to move it away from the town centre,” Jeannie said. “This is why we have put forward a number of options. We understand people are interested in what happens further along the lakefront, but they are also interested in what is right out in front of the town centre. We encourage as many people as possible to come and tell us their opinions.” QLDC Councillors Lyal Cocks, Calum MacLeod

and Ella Lawton and Wanaka Community Board member Ross McRobie were on hand to answer questions and hear residents’ concerns. Ella said there were people with some very strong views. “The challenge is that this is only part of the picture. There is also a transport strategy, a town centre strategy and a proposed district plan. It has all got to come together. We need to remember where we came from, while providing for our growing town.” She said the residents she saw were a mixture of long-term and new residents.“The aim is to talk to as many people as possible and come up with the best possible option,” Ella said. Urban Landscape designer Garth Falconer and WCB chairperson Rachel Brown will be at the next meeting to be held at the Wanaka Library on Tuesday, February 2, from 10.30am to 1pm, with a third session to be held on Thursday, February 11, from 4pm to 6.30pm. The Draft Wanaka Lakefront Development Plan can be viewed online, at the Wanaka Library or at the Wanaka QLDC office. Feedback can be given via the online form at www.qldc.govt.nz/wanakalakefront-development-plan. The closing date for feedback has been extended to March 14.

IN BRIEF Lake Hawea residents asked to boil drinking water Queenstown Lakes District Council advised residents and businesses who take water from the Lake Hawea water supply to boil water until further notice, after routine testing detected E.coli (Escherichia coli) in the water supply.

The supply was dosed with chlorine on Monday. Chlorination of the supply and the boil water notice will remain in place until further notice. Investigations are underway to identify the source of the E.coli.

More theft victims suspected after arrest MADDY HARKER Wanaka Sun A man has been arrested for burglaries and theft carried out in Wanaka after a search warrant was executed at a Plantation Road address. The 21-year-old male, arrested on January 13, will appear in the Queenstown District Court on six charges of burglary and one theft charge. Senior Sergeant Allan Grindell said on Tuesday that the arrest was made in Makarora, not where the search warrant was executed. “He was arrested in Makarora but had been residing at the Plantation Road address where the search was and we couldn’t have made an arrest without that search,” Senior Sergeant Grindell said.

Police believe there may be other incidents, and victims may still not realise their homes or cars have been entered. The offences that occurred were in and around Plantation Road, Hedditch Street and Little Street. Police encourage residents, especially those in the area of the incidents, to check their cars and homes for signs of entry or anything missing. During the last week of December and in early January, theft from a motor vehicle and houses near Plantation Road were reported. At the time, Senior Sergeant Allan Grindell had said with this string of offending, every house was unlocked or unsecured in some way. It is unknown whether the offender was a resident or visiting the area.

Wanaka Rotarian to become district governor STAFF REPORTER Wanaka Sun Wanaka solicitor and Rotarian of 11 years, Janice Hughes, will become governor of District 9980 (from the Waitaki River south) in July when she will take the reins from the current district governor Invercargill’s Karen Purdue. Janice will join hundreds of fellow incoming Rotary district governors from around the globe at the Rotary’s International Assembly in the United States of America this Saturday (January 23). The assembly serves as an induction for all incoming district governors and other senior Rotarians from around the world. “The assembly is a golden opportunity to pick some pretty highpowered brains, Rotary high-fliers who have achieved all manner of amazing things against the odds, so I’ll be making the most of their

ideas and experiences,” she said. She will use the assembly to brainstorm ideas for a major community initiative and a separate fundraising project she is working on launching for her year-long tenure as district governor. Janice said it was an exciting time to be stepping into the role. “Rotary is starting a big push to showcase more who we are and to encourage people to come and see and experience what it’s all about... It’s fun, it’s social, it’s rewarding and the opportunities range from travel and upskilling, to getting the chance to really make a meaningful change in lots of people’s lives.” Janice will be accompanied to San Diego by husband and fellow Rotarian Clayton Hope, who will take part in the Assembly’s spouse programme. They’ll be joined by New Zealand’s five incoming district governors and their spouses.

Businesses experience strong growth Continued from page 1 With Chinese New Year beginning in two weeks, time, there will be an influx of Chinese visitors, many of them on holiday. “February is traditionally our busiest month of the year anyway and the Chinese New Year travellers now add to the usual demand. We are fully booked for the majority of the days leading up to and just after February 8, and could have sold these rooms several times over,” Mike said. “Over the last five years, for Edgewater, China has grown from being an emerging market to our second highest source of international travellers, directly on the heels of Australia. Travellers are definitely staying longer which is positive for us and for Wanaka activity operators and service providers,” Mike said. Skydive Wanaka sales manager Lisa Chambers said the Chinese are currently one of their strongest markets. “We have seen growth every year and in September, October and November 2015 we also saw an unexpected large growth in Chinese visitor numbers,” Lisa said. Direct flights into Christchurch from China have aided the increase in visitor numbers to the South Island and in particular Wanaka.

Rare German plane makes sea voyage to Warbirds Over Wanaka A rare Hispano Buchon Me-109 aircraft will be shipped to Wanaka for the Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow at Easter. The aircraft has been dismantled and put into a container and has begun its 47-day voyage on ‘CMA CGM America’ this week. The aircraft will be transferred to the ‘Spirit of Sydney’ in Cartagena, Colombia before heading through the Panama Canal and on to Port Chalmers where it is due to arrive on March 5. Warbirds Over Wanaka general manager Ed Taylor, said shipping an historic and valuable aircraft such as the Me-109 from the other side

of the world is quite a big undertaking. Owner John Romain, of the Aircraft Restoration Company in the UK ,and one of his engineers will oversee the unpacking, re-assembly and test flying of the aircraft over the week leading up to the airshow. John is one of the UK’s most accomplished warbirds pilots and will fly the aircraft at Wanaka. The aircraft will be flying at least twice a day at the airshow and will include an aerial duel with its Battle of Britain nemeses the Spitfire, marking 75 years since the famous conflict.

Lake Wanaka Tourism business development executive Geoff Marks said the increased air capacity into Christchurch from China is great news for both the South Island and the Lake Wanaka region. “Wanaka is one of the most popular destinations for Chinese free independent travellers offering them an authentic Kiwi experience. They can enjoy Wanaka first hand with passionate local operators and get to experience our pristine landscape and nature via a range of activities,” Geoff said. A year-on-year comparison ending November 2015 shows overall guest nights in New Zealand were up 9.8 percent to 720,261 with a 11.8 percent increase in international guest nights and a 7.1 percent increase in domestic guest nights. General manager for Lake Wanaka Tourism, James Helmore is delighted with these results. “Anecdotally, town has been substantially busier than in previous years and these numbers affirm what our operators and local businesses have been reporting.” “We have seen consecutive month-on-month growth since May which is really pleasing for the tourism sector and the Wanaka economy as a whole,” James said.

Wanaka’s own museum is in the works

IN BRIEF

MADDY HARKER Wanaka Sun

Rogue rooosters given reprieve Residents of Wanaka will be happy to know the two roosters who had been cooped up in the public toilets and had served some time in the pound have gone on to greener pastures. Last week the council put out a plea for someone to come to their rescue or they would meet an untimely demise. QLDC communications officer Michele Poole confirmed they have been re-homed and are “happily clucking around in a field somewhere”.

I’m Rebecca Glynn and after spending many years of holidays and weekends here made a permanent move two years ago. Having been in the industry for more than 10 years I still love the reward I get when someone moves into their new home. My experience working as a contractor on building sites, owning a décor store and working for construction companies enables me to help people through the process of buidling their new home, making it a enjoyable process. I pride myself on working with with you to build a home that suits your individual personality and style. I chose to work for GJ Gardner … Can’t wait to work with you.

A museum is being planned for Wanaka. Pip Cawthorn attended a group study Rotary exchange in Texas, USA last year, and the idea arose when Pip was researching Wanaka before she left. “Because I was representing my area I was doing research and thought it would have been great if there was a museum where I could learn the history of Wanaka,” she said. “There is a fantastic book, but it gave me the idea for a museum and I just thought, ‘why has nobody done a museum?’” Pip has holidayed in Wanaka her whole life and moved here permanently two years ago. She has a goal to have the museum completed in three to five years. “I’ve written a draft proposal and shown it to Lyal Cocks and he was very impressed. I’m also

looking at doing some feasibility studies with an accountant that used to work with the Otago Museum.” Pip also has a background in exhibition design. “I want it to be a contemporary museum that people can be proud of, something dynamic and award winning.” Pip hopes the museum will be beneficial to local families, residents and tourists, and have school group trips and organised tours visit. A survey about the proposed museum had “fantastic participation,” Pip said. Results from the survey, posted yesterday on “The Wanaka Museum - ideas and feedback” Facebook page, showed that 51 percent of respondents had said Wanaka definitely needed a museum. Forty-one percent of respondents were interested in having accessible archives and 43 percent wanted to see a strong focus on children's programmes.

With three weather-related car crashes on the Crown Range on Monday and another crash involving a vehicle and two cyclists on Saturday, police are urging motorists to drive more carefully. “This number of crashes is certainly unusual,” Senior Sergeant Allan Grindell said. Of the three crashes on Monday two were within ten minutes of each other. All three crashes on Monday were very near the summit of the range.

“Some of the drivers were not driving to the conditions,” Senior Sergeant Grindell said. “But I think the conditions were unusual, because after a long dry spell exhaust fumes, petrol and oil build up on the roads and when it becomes wet the road becomes very slippery. I suspect that probably is the main cause.” “Driver inexperience may have been a factor in any of the four cases too.” The Crown Range is the highest sealed road in New Zealand and it is challenging driving,” he said. There were also two crashes on Mount Aspiring Road with vehicles leaving the road.

GINA DEMPSTER I am lucky with my job that I get to take a holiday over Christmas, because for everyone else who works at Wastebusters, it’s the busiest time of year. The shop and yard have been packed with shoppers, and December 29 was our busiest day ever. You might expect the shop to be looking a bit bare, but thanks to all you lovely people who keep dropping off stuff, it’s still full of treasures. One drop off we enjoyed sorting through is a collection of old maps from Wanaka, Hawea and Albert Town. We’ll be putting them out in the shop next week, and everyone will have a chance to bid through sealed bid auctions. We thought that is the fairest way to sell them, as lots of people would love to display some local history on their walls. If you’re interested, come into the shop next week and put in your bid for one (or more) of the maps. We’ve also got boxes of records; so many that we’re selling them for just $1 each. There are some gems for you vinyl fans but there are also some with dubious auditory value (Val Doonican anyone?) which might be better suited to a reuse project. I’ll put up some craft links on our Wastebusters website, it could be a great option for a wet school holiday day. The recycling and rubbish for Rhythm and Alps went smoothly this year, and our crew have been out in the truck picking up recycling from more than 300 local businesses. Ben Elms, who delivers our Dr Compost workshops funded by QLDC, appeared on Radio New Zealand National last weekend to answer fast and furious questions about worm farms and composting. The Cardrona Distillery opened late last year and is already offering tours to the public as well as producing two distinct spirits. Pembroke Wines & Spirits is proudly stocking the Rose Rabbit Orange Liqueur and ‘the reid’ Single Malt Vodka. We look forward to toasting the Cardrona Single Malt Whisky when it’s ready in 2025! Rose Rabbit Orange Liqueur Central Otago, $130 Hand-made with natural ingredients; think of orange peel meeting Cardrona un-aged Single Malt Spirit, which is then redistilled to a crystal clear, pale lemon in colour

liquor and naturally sweetened. Perfect for classic cocktails.

‘the reid’ Single Malt Vodka Central Otago, $110 Made from just three ingredients - barley, water and yeast - ‘the reid’ is not your typical vodka. The production of single malt vodka from whisky origins results in its unique flavour and quality – try on its own, with ice or with soda water and a dash of lime.

SPORT IN BRIEF FIS super G win for skier Piera Hudson Wanaka’s Piera Hudson won the FIS super G race at Aspen, Colorado yesterday beating off competition from a 44-strong field. "It was great to get another super G win under my belt," said Piera. "The Aspen Ski Club worked really hard to get the course in good

shape for the race after a lot of snowfall recently. I hadn't been on SG skis since the end of last year so I'm really happy with the way I attacked the course and being on the hill for the first time today I plan on bringing even more for tomorrow's race."

GLENDA TURNBULL Wanaka Sun Cardrona Mountain Bike School is a new addition to Cardrona Resort for this summer. The park features a variety of lift-accessed downhill and cross-country mountain bike trails for all ages. Instructor Jacob Coles (pictured) who hails from Orange, New South Wales, Australia has had two seasons teaching in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada before coming to New Zealand. “I’ve coached riders of all levels, from beginners through to young racers in Whistler Development Team. I’ve also worked alongside pro riders for summer gravity camps,” Jacob said. He said he loves being outdoors and his bike has taken him to some amazing places around the world. “I really enjoy teaching because I get to share my passion,” Jacob said. The school’s other instructors are from Canada, the UK and New Zealand and provide instruction, guiding and development programmes. Women’s elite category added to 2016 Defiance GLENDA TURNBULL Wanaka Sun The starting list for Red Bull Defiance 2016 will feature more of the world’s best adventure races. The 160km, two-day, two-person team race returns to Wanaka this weekend Wanaka athletes Braden Currie and Dougal Allan won the inaugural event in 2014 and this time around the men’s elite team and mixed elite team categories are expected to be extremely fierce. The most significant change for 2016 is the inclusion of a women’s elite category. Red Bull Defiance race director Patrick McAteer said, “After such a strong field in the mixed category in Red Bull Defiance 2014, we have now included a women-only division that will be very popular with elite women.” One member of the top-placed female team from the 2014 event, Sia Svendsen of Christchurch will return, this time racing with super-strong Wanaka athlete Joanna Williams. They are guaranteed to be pushing hard for an all-female victory. Course designer Braden Currie will not be racing this year as he focuses

on on-road racing for the next six months in his bid to race triathlon at the Rio Olympics in August. “With only a limited chance to earn the points and results I need, it's really important that I'm as prepared as I can be which requires me to fully apply myself to the triathlon format.” “While I'm disappointed to not be able to compete, I'm still going to be heavily involved in the event and look forward to watching year two unfold,” Braden said. The 2016 course has one change to the final stage of day one, where the 15km run on the Millennium Track into Wanaka has been replaced by an extended kayak leg. The final paddle will now be 17km, from the West Wanaka Bridge transition area into the Wanaka township. “Red Bull Defiance 2014 set a benchmark for the toughest, most challenging two-person, two-day multi-sport endurance race in the world,” Patrick said. “True to the nature of this world class event, Red Bull Defiance 2016 brings all the challenging elements of 2014, while increasing the competitor numbers, adding new competitor categories and evolving the special stages with a twist.”

I was once informed (jokingly) that botany and zoology was the art of insulting plants and animals in Greek and Latin! There is international agreement on the generic and specific name of the species of grebe that lives in these parts. It is Podiceps cristatus australis and when we write it in its Latin form, the convention is to either underline it or write it in italics. The meaning of Podiceps is not as obvious as cristatus (crest) and australis (for southern or of the south). Podiceps roughly translated from the Latin makes vulgar reference to the position of these birds’ legs on their body “bumlegs”; hence their bumbling gait on land. Their legs are not quite far enough back on their body for them to be able to stand upright like a penguin or far enough forward to balance themselves like most birds do. It is the common name of this bird that is confusing. The

field guide to the birds of New Zealand calls it the “Australasian Crested Grebe” as does Geoff Moons Book. The Readers Digest Book refers to it as the “Southern Crested Grebe” and the Handbook of Australian, New Zealand and Antarctic Birds (HANZAB) as “Great Crested Grebe” and the authority on The Grebes, Jon Fjeldsa of Denmark, also knows it as the Great Crested Grebe. Some agreement there; but there is another species of grebe that is also called the Australasian Grebe (Tachybaptus novaehollandiae), or sometimes Australasian Little Grebe. The same species is also called the Australian Grebe and the northern hemisphere has a Great Crested Grebe. My preference is for the Southern Crested Grebe. But above all, perhaps you can now better understand why we have a more formal nomenclature for our plants and animals.

Sustainable irrigation I wish to commend QLDC and Parks Manager, Steve Quin, for taking a responsible and ultimately a sustainable approach to the irrigation of parks. Good on the council for leading by example and targeting the irrigation of amenity areas where it is absolutely necessary for public use. It is however timely for the council to take a more proactive approach by prohibiting the wastage of water by those residents who irrigate roadside berms and public land. The vast majority of residents are aware of and generally appreciative of living in a semi-arid landscape of Central Otago. Most people realise potable water is a valuable resource that should not be squandered on a self indulgent pursuit for a vivid green lawn, roadside berm or reserve. Property management should respond to and be respectful of the inherent climate as well as the drought conditions the district is presently subject to. A few residents need a reality check if they honestly believe that a dry, parched park is unsuitable for recreation or even “dangerous to even walk on”. Relative to vast areas of habitable land throughout the planet Central Otago is very well off. Please do not take the district’s natural resources for granted and consider if it is essential when you make a move to turn on that tap. Alan Cutler

Arion 620 tractor joins heavies STAFF REPORTER Wanaka Sun The NZ Rural Highland Games will be held over the hill in Queenstown on Waitangi Weekend. The inaugural Games was held last year, and the event is a great family weekend of sport and live entertainment. Wanaka’s Jody Direen - who has just been nominated for a further three Country Music Channel awards - will perform on Saturday, while Lex Jocelyn from Claas Wanaka has

supplied a tractor for the “Heavies” competition made famous last year. The gut-busting tractor pull is a new addition to the Heavies and competitors will pull the Arion 620 tractor, which weighs approximately eight to nine tonnes. There are three further “heavy” events in what was one of the highlights of last year’s Games. These are the caber toss, stones, farmer’s walk and weight over bar. Pictured: Jody Direens pulls Lex Jocelyn and the Arion 620 tractor.

Saturday provided great weather for The Ruby this year, after the inaugural 2015 event was cancelled due to bad conditions. Organisers Eddie Spearing and Jamie Norman were relieved when Saturday provided calm conditions, as well as a great swimmer turnout and a safe and enjoyable event. “It was a really successful day and we got great feedback,” Eddie said. “We were told that the event had a really good feel, people felt safe and really enjoyed themselves.” “It’s a really diverse group compared to triathlon,” he added. The event had just under 300 competitors, with ages ranging from six to 74 years old. Swimmers came from all over New Zealand, and one couple even came all the way from Adelaide especially for the event. “For a lot of people it was their first open water swim, and for others their first time swimming

around Ruby Island,” Eddie said. “It’s an event for anyone that really enjoys swimming.” Eddie said the event will be back next year, with an exact date near mid-January to be finalised. Winners for The Ruby (2.5km) and Big Ruby (3.8km) are listed below. See The Ruby website for more results. Pictured: Big Ruby winner (overall men) Mark Cockroft, of Wanaka. The Ruby (2.5km): Open (elite) women: Sally Hayes, Invercargill, 1, 34:58; Olivia Thornbury, Invercargill, 2, 35:54; Michelle Bryant, Auckland, 3, 37:00. Open (elite) men: Sean Donnelly, Germany, 1, 31:17; Janus Staufenberg, Wanaka, 2, 32:17; Sam Naylor, Timaru, 3, 32:32. Big Ruby (3.8km): Overall men: Mark Cockroft, Wanaka, 1, 51:39; Ants Jackson, Queenstown, 2, 55:12; Fraser Dunbar, Timaru 3, 55: 49. Overall women: Adela Ledvinkova, Queenstown, 1, 55:08; Cassandra Harvey, Invercargill, 2, 1:00:12; Angela Moir, Christchurch, 3, 1:00:14.

SPORT IN BRIEF Bowlers on point for Partridge Cup Final Matrix Albion Reserves played Dunstan High School in a perfect conditions in a replay of last year’s Partridge Cup Final. Matrix Albion lost the toss and was sent in to bat first. They didn’t have the best start to the innings. Albion was down five wickets for 80 runs at the break. The batters had to work hard for their runs as the out-field was slow. Albion finished the innings 137 all out off 37 overs. Sean Nugent was the top scorer with 35. Matrix Albion bowlers were on point right from the first over, and the fielders backed them

up. Dunstan were bowled out for 67 in the 26th over. Jimmy James Baker took three wickets for 12 runs off 6 overs, Scotty Finlay took two wickets for four runs off four overs and Mike O’Connor took three wickets for five runs off four overs. The Galloway and Still Albion Seniors game against Maniototo was called off. The points will be split. Both teams are at home this weekend, playing Blacks Hill at the Luggate Cricket Grounds and Queenstown at Pembroke Park.

Seeking inspiring stories for Anne Scanlon memorial trophy The Challenge Wanaka team is seeking nominations for the Ann Scanlon Memorial Trophy. They would like to hear about people who have achieved something “out of the ordinary” to reach the start line of Challenge Wanaka or the Lake Wanaka Half in 2016. Named after inspirational Challenge Wanaka

trustee and keen triathlete, Ann Scanlan, the trophy has been set up in her memory to recognise remarkable achievement. The trophy will be awarded at prize giving on Sunday after the race. Nominations can be sent via email to vmo@challenge-wanaka.com.

Strong line-up for 10th Challenge An elite international pro field, which includes defending champions Gina Crawford and Dylan McNeice, and a record age group field will line up for the tenth anniversary of Challenge Wanaka next month. “I am excited to see such a great field lining up for Challenge Wanaka 2016,” Dylan McNeice said. “There are four to five guys there who will all bring different dynamics to the race, but one thing is for sure, it looks as though I will need to pack the best bike legs of my career. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the bike and overall race records fall this year, I think it is going to take a massive performance from the eventual winner.” In 2015, Wanaka’s Dougal Allan set a new bike course record of 4:30:50. This year, Maik Twelsiekby (also know as the German Cycling Machine) who had the fastest bike split in Challenge Kona this year, and cycling powerhouse, Joe Skipper (GBR), who holds the fourth fastest 180km bike split of all time will be lining up against Dougal and Dylan in the men’s field. The women’s field includes current Challenge Roth champion, Yvonne van Vlerken (NED), and 2015 runner-up, Laura Siddall (GBR), as well as Alyssa Godesky (USA) and Anna Cleaver (NZD). A record field of more than 1600 age group athletes will take on the full (226km) and half (113km) distances. Challenge Wanaka takes place on February 20 from 7am. Entries close at midnight on January 23. WANAKA SUN

Jackson Wells (freeski), Finn Bilous (freeski) and Elizabeth Reid (alpine skiing) have all been selected to represent New Zealand at the Youth Winter Olympic Games in Lillehammer, Norway in 2016. Jackson Wells, brother of Olympians Jossi, Byron and Beau-James Wells, has had some solid results over the past year placing second in the Continental Cup, fourth at the Junior World Champs and most recently fourth in the Copper Mountain Rev Tour. Jackson said the Youth Olympic Winter Games are as a crucial opportunity moving forward. “I’m really proud to be named in the team to Lillehammer. My brother Beau-James went to the Youth Winter Olympic Games in Innsbruck and said it was great preparation, both mentally and physically for the games in Sochi. Selection for the team to Lillehammer will help me achieve my goal of competing at an Olympic Winter Games,” Jackson said. Finn Bilous (pictured) placed third in the Continental Cup early in the 2015 season and fifth in the North Face New Zealand Freeski Open halfpipe event. “I’m happy and grateful to be given the opportunity to represent New Zealand at the Youth Olympic Games. This event has been a goal of mine since I first heard about it in 2012, so to now be selected to compete for New Zealand is a huge honour,” Finn said. Elizabeth Reid travels three hours to Wanaka to train at the Cardrona High Performance Centre every weekend throughout winter. She currently trains with World Ski Connection in Switzerland with coach Adi Bernasconi. Elizabeth’s strongest results have come in the past season with a fourth place finish in giant slalom at the Cardrona FIS Tech Series and sixth in National Championship Giant Slalom at Coronet Peak. “I’m most looking forward to the amazing opportunity of being able to race the best girls my age in the world. Representing New Zealand at the Youth Olympic Games means a lot knowing I’m not only racing for

myself but my country,” Elizabeth said. Snow Sports New Zealand Director of Coach and Sport Development, Adam Dooney said they are thrilled for the athletes selected to the 2016 Youth Winter Olympic Games Team. “They have all worked hard and deserve to represent New Zealand at the event. The qualification period has been long and tough. All of the athletes that set out to be considered for selection have performed with distinction and have pushed each other and themselves to the limits of their performance,” Adam said. “The Snow Sports NZ selectors are confident the selected athletes will do themselves, their sport and their country proud in Lillehammer.” Hosted from February 12 to 21 in Lillehammer, Hamar, Gjøvik, Øyer and Oslo, 1100 young athletes from the age of 14 to 18 from 70 nations will compete in 70 medal events across 15 winter disciplines.
